IP Report
For this project I used two typefaces:
Streetwear Regular Optima Regular Streetwear was designed by Artimasa which is an Indonesia based graphic and type design studio. Optima on the otherhand is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf between 1952-1955 for the D. Stempel AG foundry, Frankfurt, Germany. All the photographs being used in this application were taken by myself.
Project Brief/Introduction Project Overview/Outcomes In this project students will be required to work through several exercises to create a framework for a mobile application. Students will be required to show a cumulative understanding of typographic design. New opportunities for exploring hierarchical grids will be explored. Students will be responsible for: 1.) A finished comprehensive conceptual plan for a walking/wandering app. 1.1) The app must provide an interface for the various media made available with a mobile device; i.e., video, sound, geo location, etc. 2.) A digital process book and blog showing typographic, physical, historical, and psychogeographic research. 3.) A 12 page printed process book sewn using a pamphlet binding process.

The Healthy Zone Rink
The Roycroft Campus
On January 1. 2008 the Ralph Wilson Stadium hosted their first ever-outdoor NHL game. The Buffalo Sabres played the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of 71,217 people. The Aurora Ice Association purchased the rink from the NHL and it is now located in the Village of East Aurora.
The Roycroft is the best preserved and most complex of the building remaining of the ‘guild’ that evolved in the US in the late 19th century. Elbert Hubbard started the campus development in 1897. Inspired by leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement in England, William Morris and John Ruskin, Hubbard started the Roycroft Press as a way to produce monthly publications and illuminated books.
It has become a true asset to not only East Aurora but also the entire Western New York community. Since opening, the venue has added a pavilion-style roof, locker rooms and a warming hut for guests. Its open from October through March and has added summer programming to its schedule in 2013.
The Campus, designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1986, contains 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop.
Vidlers 5&10
Knox Farms
In 1930 a shop opened known as ‘The Fair Store’ by Robert S. Vidler. Neighboring merchants took bets the shop wouldn’t last more than 6 weeks because it opened during the height of the Great Depression. They were wrong. 15 years later the store was renamed to Vidlers 5 & 10.
Knox Farm State Park is the former country estate of Buffalo’s renowned Knox Family. The park’s 633 acres are comprised of a variety of habitats, including 400 acres of grasslands (pastures and hayfields), and 100 acres of woodlands, ponds and several wetland areas.
The store became more well known when the series of ‘Bob and Ed’ commercials started appearing in the 80’s. Today, the third generation is the Vidler family has taken over and the store has become a local landmark and destination point for shoppers near and far.
Visitors to Knox Farm can observe wildlife, hike, cross-country ski and ride horseback along beautifully scenic nature trails. Nature walks are also offered through a partnership with New York Audubon and the Buffalo Audubon Society, as well as programs offered by state park naturalists. The Knox Farm Visitor Center contains exhibits of historic and natural interest.
Millard Fillmore Home
Fisher Price
Millard Fillmore built the house in 1826 for his bride Abigail. One of only 10 National Historic Landmarks in Erie County, it is the only house that was built by a U.S. president himself. Besides the White House, it is the only remaining house of the 13th President.
The birthplace of Fisher-Price Toys, East Aurora is a community that is passionate about children. Fisher-Price’s international headquarters are located on Girard Avenue in the Village. A local non profit organization operates Explore & More — a children’s museum.
The house originally stood on Main Street near the Aurora Theatre building. It stood in disrepair for many years until artist Margaret Evans Price (Mrs. Irving Price of Fisher-Price Toys) became enchanted with the little house and its history. She purchased it in 1930, had it moved to its present location and remodeled it for her studio.
The Campus, designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1986, contains 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop.
The Aurora Theatre
Sinking Ponds
When the Aurora Theatre opened to a sellout crowd in 1925 with a showing of Madame Sans Gene starring Gloria Swanson, it was promoted as a safe modern theatre, equipped for motion pictures, dramatic and musical entertainment, both local and touring. A large venue, seating over 650 patrons, the Aurora Theatre has hosted many live shows, premere events and motion pictures to the delight of generations. Today, the theatre has undergone a dramatic renovation with beautiful mahogany doors accented with brass kick plates, an expanded lobby area to welcome patrons, and a brand-new concession area featuring state-of-the-art food service equipment.
Sinking Ponds Wildlife Sanctuary in East Aurora, New York is a beautiful and spectacular preserve dedicated to the conservation of nature and its unspoiled solitude. Since this area is a very sensitive habitat, I decided a virtual cache would be the best course of action as it will introduce visitors to this majestic area while having a very minimal impact on its fragile surroundings. While you visit Sinking Ponds, please take the opportunity to enjoy the diverse wildlife that calls this place home. Here you will find a great deal of water fowl including ducks, geese and herons. There are also many trails that will take you around the lake and surrounding wetlands.

HIS TORY •
The Roycroft Campus is the best preserved and most complete complex of buildings remaining of the "guilds" that evolved in the United States at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Author, lecturer, and entrepreneur Elbert Hubbard began to develop the Roycroft Campus in 1897. Inspired by leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement in England, William Morris and John Ruskin, Hubbard started the Roycroft Press as a way to produce monthly publications and illuminated books. In March 1899, one of his essays "A Message to Garcia" became an overnight sensation and propelled him to worldwide fame. The success enabled him to rapidly grow his Roycroft community, adding thirteen additional buildings on the campus over the next ten years. It would become the vanguard of the uniquely American "Arts and Crafts" style, a decorative arts that emphasizes clean lines and simplicity of design. The artisans would branch out working in a variety of medium including wood, stained glass, and copper to name a few. By 1914, the new Print Shop on the campus would boast an equipment inventory of 23 presses and more imported handmade paper than all American printing institutions combined. In its prime the Campus employed over 500 people including women and minorities, and became a Mecca for master craftsmen and a gathering place for notable artists, authors, philosophers, and power brokers. The Campus, designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1986, contains 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop. The Campus began to fall into disrepair over time, and by 1989 was placed on the 11 Most Endangered Places list of historic properties. The threat to the historic integrity of the campus was real and imminent.

Evaluation When I began this project, I had full intentions of having my walking path be located somewhere in Fredonia. That changed when I went home for the weekend and spent the day in a nearby town, east aurora. I was meeting my dad at a restaurant in the village for lunch and I fell in love. As I was walking through the town, I began feeling more and more inspired, which is why I asked to change my location. After lunch, I walked through the town, wondering up and down streets, finding all these unique places, amazing architecture and historical landmarks that attract tourist to the artsy town. I decided to focus my walking map on the historical landmarks that bring tourist to this beautiful town. Those being, the Millard Fillmore Home, the Healthy Zone Rink, The Roycroft Campus, Sinking Ponds Wildlife Sanctuary, Fisher Price Toy store, Knox Farm, Vidlers 5&10 and The Aurora Theatre. As I began the actual design aspect of this project, I started with the application name, logo & design. I played with various different options but settled on the one that most closely resembled a map or one even may say a maze. I tried changing the design slightly to incorporate the application name within the maze but no matter how many variations I tried, I liked the original one better. From there I began designing the first page of the application. I started with the history page because I knew the layout would be relatively simple and I would be able to base the rest of my page design off of this one. After our first class critique, I realized there were a lot of things I needed to change within my app; rounding out the logo, changing the font of the apps name, and unifying the overall design, were just a few. One of the largest changes I made was to my history page and the design of my map. I was extremely inspired by seeing Tyler’s design approach and that was reflected in my history page, specifically the way I represented my slideshow of images on that page. Prior to this critique, the design of my map was very vague and I didn’t realize how poorly it was working until I made the changes to it. I added more detail such as including buildings and identifying more roads. At one point during this process, I considered changing my color palette and font
choices completely. I played with a few different ideas but my ultimate decision was to keep them the same. I originally chose this color palette and font because I felt they sufficiently represented East Aurora and after trying different things, I still saw them as the best representation. Overall, I am extremely happy with the final result of this app. I feel as though my hard work and determination throughout this process have paid off. I took both the advice from my professor and classmates and implemented them to the best of my ability. I feel that I have made a huge improvement from the start of this process, which is one of the many reasons I’m so satisfied with the results.
