Cherokee Rose The objective of this project is to create a package that reflects the design style of the country you have chosen. I believe my box clearly and successfully portrays the natural beauty of the original Americans. My design started with the concept of replicating the design of a Native American teepee. Dowels with twine are attached to the corners of the box; I felt this gave the box design elements associated with Native Americans such as the posts of a teepee. The front of the box has the shape of a Cherokee rose cut out of it, displaying a Native American woman wearing the earings inside. An information card is attached to a feather that explains the origins of the Cherokee rose and the plight of the Native Americans.
Inspiration My inspiration for this project was the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans. Even through their hardest times and harsh environments, beauty can still be found in there culture. That is why I chose a jewelry package for this project. I felt jewelry is the best way to show the beauty of the Cherokee people.

Logo Type In trying to create my logo for Cherokee rose, I immediately decided to include an image of the flower itself into the design. I went through many stages of rose placement ranging from the flower in place of the “O in the word rose, to the flower sitting above the wording with the stem hanging down through it. I eventually decided on a mixture of the two. I colored the wording turquoise as this is a common color in Native American culture and art. The packaging and jewelery inside are also turquoise.

Expressive Type The objective of this project is to explore type with different materials and apply it to an informative poster. I believe my type exploration clearly reflects the theme portrayed in each poster. My design for the vote poster is that we are all connected by our actions so we should all make it count and vote to make a change. The oil addiction poster and steroid poster connects to its own ideas and themes.
Inspiration My inspiration for this project was the importance of material to typography, and how one could create a type with materials found around the house. Writing words with different material wasn’t enough for me. I used the material to convey the message of the subject matter. For instance, I used duct tape for the word “slavery” to represent being bound against your will.

Exploration I used all types of materials to create a wide range of styles that would reflect the themes. For poverty I used food to show the seriousness of poverty and lack of food in the world.

Poster My concept for the Vote poster was to link the past with the present using facts about voting. The circle of text behind the Vote Type is made up of the history of voting. I used call outs of key terms so viewers can relate to the subject matter through these words (i.e. Catholic). I also incorporated facts in correlation to these key words to inform the reader. All of this was then colored red, white and blue to invoke patriotism.

Hierarchy The objective of the magazine layout was to creatively integrate typography into a grid system while maintaining a theme. For my magazine the theme was package design. Before I could delve into the grid system, I first had to research the importance and techniques of designing a package.
Inspiration As the main purpose of a magazine is communication, I chose to focus on package design as my subject matter. Packaging must communicate with a consumer in an attractive way, much like the pages of a magazine. Magazine layouts such as Vogue were a source of my inspiration for this project.

Spread Layout To achieve this flow within my spread, I utilized certain design elements to create a path for the eyes to follow. The first parts the eyes see are the strong black lines that guide them through each page. This provides the reader with a sense of direction. I also attempted to blur the lines between text and image. I placed the text under, beside, and over the images on each page. This allowed me to get creative with my image placement, making for a more interesting layout. I also used bracketing to pull the eyes attention to key quotations from the text. Lastly, I decided not to include a page number on every page as the number would detract from the path the strong black lines were guiding you through.

Poster series The objective of this project was to create a series of posters that creatively communicated their messages to the viewers. There were a total of three posters all together. One for a play called Grant Us Peace, one for the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the third was for an open studio at San Diego State University.
Inspiration My inspiration for these posters varied with each one. For the Feast Your Eyes poster, I wanted to use a play on words to represent peoples’ hunger for new art. For Grant Us Peace, I wanted to convey a muddied vision of good and evil as together they create a gray area. The Imagine poster was about interactivity. I wanted the viewer to interact with the poster by filling in the missing letter using their imaginations.

Food Type Since the theme of this poster is a play on words for Feast Your Eyes, I created a type using food to form the letters. To make each letter unique and fun, I also incorporated other things associated with food such as a butter knife and condiments. This allowed me to venture out with the formation of the letters creating a fun type to read.

Logotype To create the desired interactivity for this poster, I purposely designed the type with certain aspects missing and conjoined. In following with the theme of imagination, the missing letters force the viewer to use their own to fill in the missing pieces. I carried this theme into the type of the poem by replacing every letter ‘A’ with a blue underscore that is linked by color to the ‘A’ in imagine.

Virtue The objective of my Micro/Macro Book was to choose a piece of literature and draw a parallel between the story and my life using design elements. The book I chose was East of Eden as I felt the character of Cathy was written for my mother.
Inspiration My inspiration for this project was the story of my life and how similar it was to the story East of Eden, written by John Steinbeck. The first time I read it I could immediately relate to the characters. I wanted to use creative layout and powerful imagery to convey the similarities of the two stories.

Video Games The objective of this project was to pick a personal subject and create posters and merchandising for that subject that would appeal to the target demographic. For my subject I chose video games as it is a thriving industry of art. I created three posters for three separate games and individual merchandise that fit each game.
Inspiration My inspiration for this project was three of my favorite video games, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Infamous: Second Son, and Watch Dogs. For the design of the posters I wanted to use contrast to make them more dramatic. I used color on certain characteristics of the subject in the poster to represent important aspects of each game. I then created merchandise that I felt marketed the games best.
