The sports inspired trend has been quickly making its way off the runways of New York and straight into our closets. Gym goers and non-gym goers alike are all sporting this trend. No pun intended. The appeal of this trend comes mainly from it’s ease of wear. It means that it is now socially acceptable to casually throw on your favorite sweatpants but still look effortlessly chic if styled accordingly. Key words being “styled accordingly”. It’s rare for a trend in fashion to be so comfort conscious, so it’s natural that this trend is so well adopted into everyday wear.
4
The trend has grown from being a slouchy pair of pants paired with a boxy, cropped tee in 2014 to a looser interpretation of the sporty influence through a mixture of more luxurious fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and cool accessories. Varsity jackets, track pants, sexy heels help make up this trend. It’s all about mixing the simple and casual textures of jersey and mesh fabrics with the more sophisticated fabrics such as leather and chiffon.

The consistency of this trend probably means it’s here to stay for good. With a decade long collaboration between fashion designer Stella McCartney and athletic wear company Adidas, the sports trend is taking the world by storm. Not only is the fashion world being rocked by a flurry of mesh fabrics and accented baseball stitches, but fashion is also having an impact on activewear. Brands that specialize in active gear such as Nike and Lululemon are seeking help from designers with a fashion background to give their brand a stylish makeover. Retailers are also aware of the fact that this trend seems to be sticking and stores such as H&M and Victoria’s Secret are making efforts to expand their activewear selection to meet the growing consumer demand. I personally think that this trend is going to continue, because it is more than just a clothing trend, it reflects a new kind of lifestyle.

Milly Spring 6
2015 rtw
My favorite Spring 2015 runway show that embraced the sporty trend was presented by the brand Milly. The entire collection stuck to the brand’s playful aesthetic. The effective use of strong shoulders, mesh fabrics, and bold stripes added a nice touch of athleticism to the very wearable swing skirts and sporty crop tops. My favorite part about the collection was the use of a myriad of colors that I wouldn’t normally associate with sports. The lavenders, pinks, and greens paired with the feminine silhouettes makes the collection very appealing to all women whether they go to the gym or not. Personally, the closest thing I get to working out is running the other way at the sight of a treadmill. But this collection definitely has me wanting to get in on this sporty trend.

Pleats often get a bad rep for being associated with tacky schoolgirl skirts. But they have grown up as this season’s hottest trend. Swaying down the runways of fashion week were flattering skirts and dresses in longer lengths that hit below the knees in the beautifully pressed fabrics. Pleats can be simple and elegant depending on how and what it is worn with. Whether it is a full maxi dress or a subtle detail, pleats can easily add a touch of graceful fluidity to any garment. Noted as an important feminine detail, pleats take on a new sophistication in different metallics and prints. Both knife and accordion pleats are an easy way to create volume in a skirt or dress without being bulky in the spring season’s lightweight fabrics, which makes it the desired choice of detail.

Pleats crafted in soft, swaying fabrics such as chiffon and silk have us all running to our nearest Nordstrom to get the coolest skirt of the season. We tend to be very fond of clothes that move, because we associate movement with beauty and elegance. Also, movement isn’t typically captured in our everyday clothing. Gowns are flowy. Sweaters are not. So it’s wonderful that pleats are back in a modernized version to be so pretty and chic. Pleats used to be limited to only a few body types. However, designer legends such as Fortuny and Issey Miyake revamped the way people viewed them. Today, modern designers included but not limited to Michael Kors and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have invented a variety of different styles of pleats to fit more body types and be more appealing on women of all
shapes and sizes. Pleats range from knife, box, to petite and precise and many more. Pleated skirts and dresses can easily transition from one season to the next. Throw a sweater and some booties on with a skirt and the outfit is immediately fall ready. The negative connotation of pleats being old school is no longer valid, because designers have given them a high fashion makeover.

For all of you that think that yellow isn’t your color, think again!
Yellow is the brightest color of the season and there is a shade out
there for everyone. Pale yellow, geranium yellow, saffron yellow, and many, many other different hues and tints of yellow were shown
throughout the spring 2015 runway shows. It was more than just an
accent color, it was the focus for this season. It was incorporated into a wide array of different styles from boho to vintage to modern. The color makes for a great complementary color in prints so it was not a surprise that it was so popular. It’s versatility is simply irresistible. Not to mention that the color tends to make people happier due
to its cheery nature. Yellow can be worn as a pop color or if one is feeling daring, an entire yellow ensemble would be acceptable as
well. From small details of yellow to full-on gowns of the same hue, designers embraced the sunny color with open arms.

Acne Studios Spring 2015 RTW
The yellow trend looked so dashing on the runway. Designers came up with a variety of ways to wear the trend. At Creatures of the Wind, it was worn as a vested jacket with a belt for a chic, clean look. The trend was also spotted on the runways at Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and ChloĂŠ. Victoria Beckham used the color on a floral print while Lela Rose blew the color up onto an entire ground grazing gown. Couture designers Giambattista Valli and Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel also added pops of yellow to their exquisite collections. Needless to say, retail stores will be stocking up on this fun color for a wide product assortment. The trend works on clothes and accessories and even shoes. The playful color is sure to bring some jolly feelings to the person wearing it and those around them.
I have to say that I used to be a disbeliever of the color yellow. Being asian, I have a yellow undertone in my skin color and I assumed that yellow on yellow would not be ideal. However, the runway shows this season have partially convinced me to try and find a shade that’s right for me. It is a very easy color to pair with other colors such as blues, blacks, pinks. Depending on the shade of the yellow, the color has potential to be a neutral and can be easily thrown on with anything. The yellow trend was seen all over the red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes on some of the biggest stars. It was successfully worn by Naomi Watts in Gucci, Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Carolina Herrera, and Leslie Mann in KaufmanFranco. And these ladies all looked sophisticated and elegant. So I might just give this trend a try in the hopes that no one will compare me to Big Bird.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” was the famous quote that was
said by Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada.
She’s mostly accurate about the
lack of novelty in a floral print for the most verdant season of the
year. However, the new florals
are being taken to a whole new
dimension that I think would have made even the most
difficult to please, Ms. Priestly
proud. Designers are using floral
appliqués of various sizes to
make it seem as if the flowers
are literally blossoming off of the
delicate fabrics they are sewn
onto. The fun, floral motifs dot this season’s chicest tops and
dresses to complete a magical 16
and dreamy ensemble.

Over the past couple of years, texture has been dramatized to where it is now: 3-dimensional. Can we even call it a texture anymore? The multiple layerings of fabrics have pushed the trend to include an extra element of tactility to fashion. The 3-D flowers are among the most feminine interpretations of the trend and is well executed by designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Giambattista Valli. Florals aren’t usually my thing, but I must say that the trend is well incorporated into their designs to appear delicate and aesthetically pleasing.
17
Michael Kors, the king of American sportswear, shows us how to dress the 3-D florals down with a chambray shirt and belt. He also shows us that it’s okay to wear it with a plain white
tee. He expertly places the floral appliqués on top of sheer skirts to give it the romantic feel that flowers are known for. And those skirts are to die for. I love them.
They’re so beautifully crafted and so effortless that they can be dressed up or down. It’s a fresh take on the overly done floral trend that can so easily be disastrous if worn incorrectly.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2015 RTW
Leave it to Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton to take the 3-D floral texture trend above and beyond. It is no longer just floral appliqués being sparsely attached to fabric as decoration. Bunches of floral pieces are put together to form a fabric upon which the designs are executed. Burton contrasted the delicacy of flowers with the harnesses that encompassed the torsos as well as the faces of the models to create a visual juxtaposition. This dark take on pretty florals is standard for McQueen’s style.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2015
Fashion loves animals. It’s even gone down the calf haired accessories road. However, animal prints were redefined this season as we moved away from the typical tiger stripes and leopard spots to a more literal interpretation of the trend. It wasn’t about mimicking the appearance of animals. Instead, designers went a more whimsical route with the creatures. And who knew that insects could be so feminine and appealing until Karl Lagerfeld sent them down the runway dotting a series of frilly dresses. Some designers used animals to create a funky, allover print while others created a single, graphic display of the animal’s face. It certainly added an interesting visual element to clothing when entire owls and butterflies were plastered on a sophisticated dress.

No. 21 Fall Pre-Fall 2015
A novel display of animal prints were literally gallivanting across the fabrics seen at Stella McCartney and See by Chloé. Prints are generally loud and eye-catching, but now more than ever, you won’t be able to avoid anyone wearing a dress with a print of purple and green felines. I think the print still looks wacky in muted colors like the ones seen at Chloé, but it’s nice to be able to stray away from leopard spots for a bit. This new animal print trend is so fresh and different which brings me to wonder whether it will catch on with the masses. I think only the most innovative trendsetters will truly appreciate this trend. Needless to say, this trend can definitely liven up any outfit.

Givenchy Fall 2015 Menswear
Not even the menswear collections could escape the jaws of the creatures that were spotted on the Fall 2015 runways. An array of bugs, felines, amphibians, and birds appeared as prints or as a bold graphic on clothing. It added a new level of fierceness that we don’t normally associate with men’s clothing. The different designers showed us the many ways that we could interpret the animal print trend. It was subtly embroidered at Thom Browne and made into an optical illusion at Roberto Cavalli. I presume that this season will determine whether the ladies or the men will wear it better.

Great overcoats dominated the runways this season. Who said that we need to sacrifice style for cold weather? Especially not when you partake in one of the biggest trends of the season: shearling coats. Shearling has come a long way since the 70’s when it was cool to wear for it’s simple practicality among the bohemian chic crowd. Today, designers have drawn inspiration from that decade and revamped the fuzzy texture for the new millennials with an interest in a fashion blast from the past. These woolly bad boys made a statement in long overcoats or added just the right touch of pizazz as collars or details on suede and leather jackets. The variety of shearling seen on the runways were pretty jaw-dropping as well. Different treatments gave the shearling unique looks which helped to make it such a popular fiber among designers. Shearling is the surefire way to look cool and stay warm this season.
25
There will be enough shearling to go around as retail stores rush to stock their shelves thanks to it’s consistent appearance in the pre-fall as well as fall fashion shows. Shearling can make anything look luxurious whether it’s just a collar or sleeve trim, or a full on coat. Different types of shearling can even be pieced together like a patchwork to create a new pattern of it’s own. No matter how you prefer to take the trend, designers have come up with a number of ways to incorporate the fabric into this season’s outerwear silhouettes to satisfy just about everyone. For those who aren’t the biggest fan of fur, shearling will be a very prominent alternative to all of the fur that is also appearing on the runways. It’s just as cozy and can come in a variety of colors due to new innovative techniques and designs.
26
Shearling is the perfect
alternative for new millennials
who are looking for something
that is stylish that they consider
hip. It’s not exactly the usual fur or mink that your grandmother has. Shearling can be a cool detail on leather bombers
or short suede jackets. I love the warm beige or off white
colors that natural shearling
comes in, but designers have found different ways to dye
the shearling so that it comes in more novel colors that are
appropriate for their trendier
designs. I love the contrasting color of the shearling trim on
the Rebecca Taylor coat. And the subtle sleeve and collar trims on the Rachel Comey jacket makes
it a versatile piece that is perfect

Over-the-top glamour was
apparently on every designers’
minds this season. Models were
shimmering and glittering down
the runways of designers ranging from the clean cut J. Crew to Jenny Packham. I can’t resist
some good old sparkles so I
loved all the glitzy fabulousness of Fall 2015. Perhaps it is finally time for the move away from minimalism and onto more
exaggerated embellishments.
Embellished necklines and the return of lamé were apparent signs of the return of the luxe
influence from the 70’s. Full-on sequin gowns and bejeweled tops made an appearance on
several different runways, which
gives me hope that there will be a revival of the much needed touch of sequined glamour. 28
Alice+Olivia Fall 2015 RTW
Jenny Packham Fall 2015 RTW
There is nothing discreet about the sequined embellishments of this season. From dresses to gowns to outerwear, a variety of glitzy decorations sashayed down the runway. Even designers who normally do beading on evening wear came up with innovative ways to go even further with 3D textures and embellishments. Though I do have to point out that some of the embellishments, especially the ones that were excessive and all over, seemed very heavy to don everyday. I presume that the trend will be reserved for special occasions or a fun night on the town. Either way, I love the sparkles because a girl just can’t stay away from shiny things. But for everyday, the decorated garments can be paired with sleeker lines such as a pair of trousers or nice, clean thigh high boots like at Alice+Olivia to bring the look back down to earth.

R ACHEL ZOE 2015
30
The revival of the 70’s inspired trend had Rachel Zoe’s name written all over it. Rachel Zoe brings the glam from the 70’s to the runway season after season, so it was no surprise that she was on the bandwagon for this season’s hottest embellishment trend if she wasn’t already at the helm of it. I loved all of her sparkly numbers. They were classy, but still very much fun. Rachel Zoe is probably one of my most favorite designers, because she stays so true to her aesthetic. I can see her style in every piece she sends down the runway and her being a famous celebrity stylist means that I’m not the only one that thinks she knows how to dress. She shows us this season that a pattern created out of sequins can be understated and not overly dramatic.

Tom Ford Fall 2015 RTW
Fringes were in full swing this season all over the designer runways. The 70’s influence was going strong and carried it’s impact across several of the biggest trends. But I have to say that this season, the fringe game was the strongest. We saw a bit of it in the Spring and Pre-Fall shows, but they acted as gateways for the Fall season’s grandest slam. Fringe appeared all over garments and accessories. Some designers incorporated the trend into entire coats and gowns while others took a more conservative route and used them as subtle details on scarves and bags. I loved the incorporation of fringe throughout almost all of the pieces at the Burberry show, but the fringed booties were the most fun though since they swung as the models walked and drew the viewer’s eyes down.

Sally LaPointe Fall 2015 RTW
BCBG Max Azria Fall 2015 RTW 34
Sally LaPointe Fall 2015 RTW
There even appeared to be a variety of fringes on the runways this season. At Sally LaPointe, it wasn’t the typical swinging fringes from flapper dresses. Instead, she cut several slits into the hem of a skirt so that they would look like wider “fringes”. With a trend comes innovation and that is when designers can take their creative liberties to new levels. BCBG shows us that we can wear a dainty swinging skirt with an oversized sweater that is chic and perfect for the wintry months. Needless to say, I loved all of the movement thanks to all of the fringes.
At Ralph Lauren, we see an array of uses for the fringy trend. It makes a cute detail at the end of knit sweaters and cardigans. Wear it in neutral tones of gray, white, cream, and beige to get that western feel often associated with suede and fringes. Not only that, but Ralph Lauren is synonymous as an American brand so the Western identity is nothing new. The fringed bags have got to be my favorite accessories for the season, because they’re so easy to wear and it’s a subtle detail that still draws attention. Fringes made of different weight fabrics can make them easy to wear with other clothing items. A fringed, sparkly skirt is paired with a heavy shearling topper for a cool, winter look. A scarf with fringe details on the ends is being worn casually with an off-white ensemble. The possibilities to wear this trend are effortless and endless.
