THESIS:

COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR URBAN ARTS

(2015-2016)

Through plenty of research and understand of the concept of “hierarchy”, this prompted a change to have a Storage Center located at 21 Ossington Ave., Toronto, Ontario into a youth community center. Through precedents of where street art/ traditional aerosol graffiti happen today, this inspired a common ground with plenty of relation to the materials being used throughout the space. With the Ossington Area having its own graffiti world minutes away as well as many surrounding schools, I found that implementing a program for the youth to help express themselves by engaging them in this growing world. And to do this in a designated space to help youth to collaborate on a larger scale freely without feeling vulnerable . Through the existing programs that the client “UNITY” offers, this building will have extensive programs where youth can participate in workshops from all strands of hip-hop (dance, emcee-ing, graffiti and dj-ing) as well as host events to help embrace and encourage youth in this growing industry.

RESIDENTIAL

(2014)

Located in the Downtown Toronto Area, “Tip Top Tailor Lofts” was originally Tip Top Tailor Factory and was later made into hard lofts. This Loft caters exclusively to a multimedia consultant clientele who is a temporary resident. The inspiration for the loft is the industrialization of Toronto. Various elements that represent is the Toronto’s Transit Commission , such as the horizontal and vertical steel bars and the connections between each, are expressed in the design of the loft’s bed frame, the partition located on the main floor, the steel bars that run vertically between the mezzanine and the main floor with many finishes that include aluminum tile. “Tip Top Loft” is a reflection of Toronto’s industrial with the unique forms that implicate the use of steel bars and the relationships between the connections whether being curvilinear or linear. Throughout the space, these steel bars can be implicated to emphasize fluid, continuous, lines that become one entity with the entire space.

LANEWAY

(2014)

Walking further in, we step from production to raw materials which are growing in green houses and in a courtyard. An old car dealership is repurposed to become a serene space of light and air. Everything about the space suggests lightness and airiness. There is a solid-void relationship, as the building is cut into to create unexpected exterior voids in the interior of the building. There are bridge greenhouses and large portals connected to College street. It is all extremely accessible. The angles have been worked out to ensure maximum sun into the courtyard and for the plants. The outdoor furniture is designed in a way that recalls the structure of the bridges on a different scale. The structure is very complex and feels weightless. It is almost all glass. The steel structure is also used to define the planting in the courtyard. We see wheat, berries, and various vegetables being grown. The different heights of the planting--low, medium and high--are used to define the spaces. We are transported to an idyllic rural setting in the middle of the city. In some places trellises and steel frames facilitate the growth of vines, we have walls defined in planting. Life has taken over--there is a limit to human accomplishments, that vastness and power of nature far overshadows what humans can do, what we seek is an architecture of nature.

KITCHEN RENOVATION (2015-2016) Collaboration with B.E.A.D. Construction Inc.

For this kitchen renovation project, the client had requested for a more open-plan and modern kitchen design since the previous kitchen space was very cramped and hard for a young family. With collaborating with the contracter as well as the client, I had provided a final construction floor plan as well as reflected ceiling plan with FF&E that was within the clients budget and added a more modern alternative by adding a custom breakfast bar and additional counter/ storage space. As well as more appliances, electrical outlets and finishes to best suit the clients desires. Overall this renovation project had taken 6 months including dining and living areas as well.
