Letter from the Directors

2013 was a season of growth and implementation for the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. After presenting more than 200 performances, concerts, and special events for our community, we are excited and humbled that we welcomed an overall 14% increase in participation in our performance, education, and outreach programs. Additionally, we strengthened local business partnerships, hired a year-round Director of Education, and accepted the invitation to become Colorado’s newest member of Actors Equity Union, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary season this year, we are thrilled to share in engaging performances and programs with our community. The return of our Adult Acting Workshop provides locals and visitors performance opportunities. Our new Summer Musical Festival Workshops engage theatre-goers in the process of regional repertory theatre. Our Lake Dillon Theatre Company Cabaret Series adds a new performance series entitled “First Sundays,” uniting patrons and artists through stories and celebrations of life through music performance. And our theatre season celebrating the struggles and triumphs of the American journey promises exciting and memorable performances for everyone. Additionally, we look forward to continuing to build partnerships with local businesses in our community. Through our various business initiatives, including our electronic visitors guide and the newly formed Small Business Initiative, we are excited to introduce our patrons to the restaurants, shops, and service providers in Summit County that make our community such an exciting place to live, work, and play. Please take the opportunity to learn more about the advertisers in this magazine. Let them know you saw their ads. And show them you appreciate their support of the LDTC by dining, shopping, and calling for their local services. We are proud to offer diverse theatre to our community. We are honored to share in exciting and meaningful cultural experiences with our community. We are proud to contribute to our local economy by attracting patrons and professional creative artists and educators from across the country each year. And we feel blessed that our community continues to support our unique performing arts organization. We hope you recognize our commitment to intimacy and quality with each theatre performance and special event. We hope you are comfortable when you join us for a play or concert. BOARD MEMBER Spotlight

Meet Larry Kelly

Volunteer, Supporter, and Chair of the Board of Development

Why should a patron of the Lake Dillon Theatre Company care about what the Development Committee does? Why you care depends on your perspective, as we are involved in so many forms of art. If you are a parent in Summit County, we offer youth theatre workshops and supplement arts education within Summit County schools. For those enjoying the beautiful summers in Summit County, we offer ten FREE Saturday night concerts at the Lake Dillon Amphitheater. However, most people know us for the many dramatic, comedic, or musical performances we stage throughout the year. With live performances so well attended, don’t ticket fees cover all the costs? Live theatrical performance is an expensive art. Doing it right is labor intensive and costly. Without the support of our generous and loyal donors we would have to cut back on the programming we offer or charge more for tickets. If we were to support all of the programs that The Lake Dillon Theatre Company offers through ticket sales alone, we would need to charge $168 per person! We rely on the financial support of our donors and involvement of many individuals to ensure our ability to continue serving our community with ticket prices that are accessible for all. If you are a donor, volunteer or supporter reading this, please accept our deepest gratitude.

10 | 20th Anniversary Season

We all should be grateful to these folks. What would you suggest to anyone not already actively supporting The Lake Dillon Theatre Company? LARRY KELLY They should first ask themselves, “Would I miss the quality the Lake Dillon Theatre offers me, my family and my guests if it was reduced or no longer available?” If you feel the LDTC is valuable for you personally or for the community, I would ask them to please consider supporting your favorite programming in one of the following ways: • • •

For individuals who enjoy the many performances, programs: make a financial, tax-deductible donation to The LDTC. For businesses who desire extra visibility and community good will, sponsor a production or advertise in OVATION. For anyone who wants to learn more about the LDTC or serve the community more through our various programs, join us as an Ambassador or volunteer.

It takes all of us together to bring exceptional quality theatre to our community.

WHAT MAKES US Different

Colorado’s Intimate Professional Theatre

“The team at Bella Design and Planning is thrilled to support our friends at the Lake Dillon Theatre.” * Wedding & Event Design * Event Planning & Management * Invitations, Stationery & Graphic Design

What Makes Us Unique? Welcome. We are pleased to bring you theatre unlike any other in our region. We are one of the most intimate professional theatres you may ever visit. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company is the only theatre in Colorado where you can regularly enjoy the talents of topnotch professional performers from throughout the USA while sitting as close as one foot away from the action. In fact, our entire theatre space including the audience seating area is smaller than the stage space for most comparable professional theatres in the Western United States.

Flourish.

However, our space is not the only thing that makes us unique. Our space is only one of the reasons we call ourselves intimate. Our commitment to intimacy means that we regularly pull back the curtain and bring you opportunities to connect with us as artists and individuals. In addition to up-close and personal performances, we offer you: •

Prologues: Before each performance our professional staff leads audience members through a brief discussion about the play.

Epilogues: After every show select cast members join staff and audience in a question and answer period.

Panel Discussion: Four times a year we host a panel discussion focusing on a different area of the theatrical art.*

Coffee Chat: Each month, we invite community members interested in volunteering or just learning more about who we are to a coffee chat for informal and intimate conversation with board members and staff.*

Let nothing hold you back.

STAGED!

Summer Celebration

A Night of Music, Singing, and More Each August, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company patrons and artists-in-residence come together for an exciting evening of music and laughter. In celebration of our 20th Anniversary Season, this annual event usually celebrating the music of Broadway will be even more exciting with a onenight-only “staged reading” performance of the musical sensation HAIRSPRAY. In line with our season of American change, the Tony-winning musical comedy HAIRSPRAY tells the story of plus-sized Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad and her journey of self-discovery during the turbulent sixties. As music and racial equality collide on network television, Tracy transforms from social outcast to sudden star and helps integrate her community, all without denting her ‘do! Summer Theatre Season

And opening August 29, Ring of Fire celebrates the love, faith, and music of legend Johnny Cash. In addition to multiple productions, the 2014 Summer Theatre Season includes workshops, discussions, and pre-show performances, inviting all patrons to gain insight into the creative processes of regional theatre. From interviews with designers to demonstrations and tours, these free additional programs allow our patrons an even more intimate look “behind the scenes.” In 2013, audiences enjoyed performances of the hilarious, award-winning Scapin and the glitzy musical revue The World Goes Round. Order your individual tickets early for the 2014 Summer Theatre Season, or consider a Flex Pass to secure yourself a seat to three very different but equally entertaining productions. We hope you spend some time with the Lake Dillon Theatre Company this summer. We look forward to seeing you at the theater.

Summer in Dillon means award-winning microbrews on Pug Ryan’s deck, Friday morning farmer’s markets, live music at The Lake Dillon Amphitheater, and The Lake Dillon Theatre Company’s Summer Theatre Season. This year, we celebrate our 20th season of intimate, diverse theatre and our tenth season of producing summer theatre. A summer staple in Dillon employing more than 45 theatre artists in residence and attracting more than 6,000 patrons to performances, the 2014 Summer Theatre Season lineup celebrates America’s diversity and offers exciting entertainment for audiences of all ages. Opening June 25, Big River is the awardwinning musical adventure of Mark Twain’s classic story of friendship between a young boy and a slave in the American South. Also opening in June is Pinocchio: An Americana Folktale, a reimagining of the Italian fairytale of the small marionette with big dreams. With a score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields and a hilarious but moving book by Neil Simon, Sweet Charity is one woman’s story of searching for her self in an ironic and cynical 1960s New York, opening July 11.

Artist Spotlight Wendy Moore returns to The Lake Dillon Theatre Company this holiday season to direct the upcoming musical comedy 1940’s RADIO HOUR, opening November 21. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company caught up with Ms. Moore this past fall. Here’s what she had to say about this upcoming production. 1940’s RADIO HOUR has been described as a love song to a bygone era. How would you describe the show? Nostalgia. If we don’t remember this time, we wish that we did. What initially attracted you to the script and story of 1940’s RADIO HOUR? December 1942, a live radio show with live Wendy S. Moore is delighted to have another chance to work at the Lake sound effects, the music and fashion of the Dillon Theatre Company after the crazy fun of THE SUNSHINE BOYS and SCAPIN. time. That wonderful set of circumstances Wendy has been fortunate to direct in Denver, Ft. Collins, Glenwood Springs, blends with a delightful array of memorable Evergreen, Snowmass, Aspen, Dillon and Breckenridge. Recently, UNMARRIED IN characters. AMERICA, which Wendy directed, took four major awards at the 2013 National What makes 1940’s RADIO HOUR AACT Festival. In November 2013, Wendy had the opportunity to direct a full special? production of Mel Brooks’ THE PRODUCERS in Aspen. It is a sweet story of joy in the midst of the hardship of wartime America. There are overtones of patriotism woven together with wacky comedy and tight harmonies. Despite missed rehearsals, a snowstorm, an actor no-show and an over-eager delivery boy who just wants a chance, The Mutual Manhattan Variety Calvalcade goes off with nary a hitch. The 1940’s RADIO HOUR takes place in December 1942. How is it still relevant to a contemporary audience? Relevance comes from universality. We still have the need to connect, to be remembered, and to care about others. We still think about the fighting men and women far from home. We all work toward our dreams and pick ourselves up after disappointments.

Wendy Moore in Moon Over Buffalo, 2010

1940’s RADIO HOUR is a charming, yet complicated mix of several stage genres, including comedy, musical theatre, radio show, variety show, cabaret, and improvisation. What do you think will be the biggest challenge in facing such a unique piece of theatre? Making it all look like it’s supposed to be together. I feel that the central image has to be the radio station. That locale allows for the fun of the live sound effects, the panic of being live on the radio, and the assortment of interesting characters who make the whole program possible.

Are you looking for a special way to celebrate the holidays with your family, co-workers, friends, or out-of-town guests? 1940’s Radio Hour is the perfect holiday-themed musical comedy that the entire family will love. We offer group discounts and premiere seating for special occasions. Call the box office and reserve your special night with your favorite people today!

16 | 20th Anniversary Season

What do you want audiences to know about this production? Every effort will be made to recreate the simplicity and dignity of the time and place. Why should audiences be excited about 1940’s RADIO HOUR at the Lake Dillon Theatre in 2014? It is going to be a journey to a time we love and the music we all know. Audiences are going to want to see and will long remember The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B!

Audience Enrichment: Prologues & Epilogues

Enjoy More from Your Theatre Experience Theatre education is an important part of our mission at the LDTC. To enhance your overall experience, we invite patrons to enjoy two additional opportunities at each main stage performance to learn more about the play, the performance, and the practitioners involved. The prologue is a ten-minute production preview before each performance. An LDTC staff member offers insight into the production, for example, a brief production history, a discussion of themes, and/or a biography of the playwright. Each prologue begins twenty-five minutes prior to the scheduled curtain time, and admission is free with your ticket. The epilogue is a post-show discussion with select company members from the performance. Actors and other members of the company lead a discussion allowing patrons to ask questions and/or offer insightful commentary concerning the production. Epilogues begin about five minutes following each performance, and admission is free with your ticket. Join us for our next prologue and epilogue and enjoy more from your theatre experience.

“It is such a unique opportunity to offer our audiences this additional element to their theatre going experience. Very often the dramaturgical work put into a production goes unnoticed to an audience member. By sharing our creative research for each production on The Lake Dillon Theatre Company’s stage we are able to provide a culturally enriching evening at no additional cost to every one of our patrons.” -Tim Paré, Director of Education 1994-2014 | 19

Audience Enrichment: Theatre Trips

ROAD TRIP!

Spend Four Days in New York & Utah with LDTC

Coming this October, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company will host its annual theatre trip to New York City for friends of the theatre as part of our adult theatre education programming. LDTC staff will select four diverse performances, usually including a classic remount, a comedy, a musical revival, and a new smash hit. Additionally, LDTC staff will arrange air and ground transportation, hotel accommodations, some meals, and group talk backs following each performance. Lake Dillon Theatre Company director Jean Fitzgerald has attended the annual Theatre Trip for five years. “It’s a great getaway and supports the theater, and we keep in touch with what’s happening in New York,” says Fitzgerald. The itinerary remains open during the mornings and some afternoons, allowing participants to explore. Fitzgerald explains, “It’s more of a vacation, and just enough free time to take advantage of other things in the big city.” But the focus of the trip remains the theatre experiences. Over the past several years, participants have enjoyed such hits as Matilda, The Glass Menagerie, Pippin, The Book of Mormon, Once, God of Carnage, War Horse, and more. August 18-22, the Lake Dillon Theatre Company will offer an educational theatre trip to the Tony-Award winning Utah Shakespeare Festival. LDTC staff will arrange transportation, hotel accommodations, some meals, daily excursion options, and ticket purchases to performances, which include Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, Henry IV, Twelfth Night, and Measure for Measure, as well as Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and a new stage adaption of Jane Austen’s classic Sense and Sensibility. Additionally, the Utah Shakespeare Festival offers literary and production seminars, backstage tours, play orientations, and more. Keystone residents Sherry and Wilson Strong participated in 2013. “We felt the Utah Shakespeare Festival trip was a very enjoyable, educational adventure with good friends. The

Entertainment for the Family

Cabarets at the LDTC Cabaret as an art form is experiencing an American renaissance. New York’s intimate venues are rushing to feature today’s most popular artists sharing personal stories and unique interpretations of songs both famous and unfamiliar. Originating in 19th century Paris, cabarets originally showcased poets and artists performing in tight spaces for audiences reveling in their one-of-a-kind comedy, burlesque, and even sociopolitical satire. Today, cabaret is once again finding its footing among crowds seeking a more intimate and meaningful performance experience. New York cabaret artist Andrea Marcovicci describes it best: “...An evening of song and stories in an intimate space that shatters the “fourth wall.” Part stand-up comic, part balladeer, part evangelist; today’s performer often has a theme that unifies the evening, knows a great deal about the music they’re singing, and shares that information in witty and inventive ways. At its best, cabaret can amuse, entertain, and inform...it can dazzle you, catch you unawares and make you weep... The audience participates in a direct, emotional conversation with the artist....” The Lake Dillon Theatre Company is dedicated to making the cabaret art form an integral part of our performance programming. We offer three unique cabaret performance series, focusing on different aspects of the cabaret genre. Broadway Then and Broadway Now celebrate musical theatre and the brilliant creative minds behind the music. Each spring, the one-weekend only Broadway Now features the music from the most current shows on Broadway. And every fall, for four performances only, Broadway Then pays tribute to the music from the Golden Age of Broadway. First Sundays celebrate cabaret artists. The first Sunday of each month offers an intimate cabaret performance by some of The Lake Dillon Theatre Company’s favorite performers, beloved Colorado artists, and performers from across the country, providing an exploration of theme and music and connecting their stories and songs with our audiences. And during the summer months, Late Nites celebrate different music styles and genres. Join us following select performances of Big River and Sweet Charity for a Late Nite Cabaret featuring your favorite summer artists. 2014 themes include “The Classics,” “The Biggies,” “Jukebox Musicals,” and much more. We are excited to present the unique cabaret art form to our community throughout the year. Audience Enrichment: Panel Discussion Series

Learning More About the Arts

Arts education is a valued component of The Lake Dillon Theatre Company mission. In 2013, the LDTC hosted a Panel Discussion Series, consisting of four independent panel discussions that featured leading theatre and arts professionals speaking about a variety of theatre and arts-related topics. Previous panelists included Susan Jenson, Executive Director of the award-winning after school arts education program Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, Deanna Miller, Program Manager of Public Art & Creative Districts at Colorado Creative Industries, Award-winning set designer Jared Grohs, and Director of Development at the National Repertory Orchestra Julie Chandler. In 2014, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company Panel Discussion Series will offer patrons opportunities to participate in new and relevant discussions led by leading theatre practitioners from across the state. Discussions will cover a variety of topics, including creative perspectives, critical analysis, and state and national trends in the performing arts. LDTC Director of Education, Tim Paré explains, “Theatrical Arts, as in any other field, develop regularly and

relate directly to the needs of a community. It is important to maintain a relevancy not only within our community, but also with the community at large. Our Panel Discussion Series allows us to share our efforts to accomplish this mission, and to allow our supporters to inspire us to stay current.” All Panel Discussions are FREE and will be held on at The Lake Dillon Theatre stage at 11AM unless otherwise noted. Join us this year for the following discussions: •

February 1st: Embracing New Work and Theatre & Technology

May 3rd: The Advantages of Collaboration

September 6th: Auditioning

December 6th: Critiquing Criticism – Theatrical Arts Evaluation

Exploring Drama One Script at a Time Since 2008, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company has hosted The Play Club as part of the LDTC adult theatre education mission. The Play Club is a book club whose participants read dramatic literature rather than fiction, non-fiction or poetry. The Play Club meets six times a year at a different member’s home. Members enjoy a casual dinner accompanied by a conversation concerning the drama’s production history, themes, characters, production values and more. The dramaturgical discussion allows members a more in-depth experience than other LDTC adult education programs often allow. “It has been wonderful to participate in the unique experience of reading and discussing plays with a group of bright and insightful people,” said 2013 Play Group participant Sue Greene. “The discussion is greatly enhanced by the leadership of theater professionals; Tim, Chris, and Josh add the dimensions of actor, producer, and director to broaden our understanding of the playwright’s intentions. The resulting ‘picture’ is more than the written word! Participants have varied backgrounds and experiences, augmenting my understanding by bringing multiple perspectives to the play. An additional benefit is that my involvement with The Lake Dillon Theatre Company is greatly increased!” The Play Club reads a wide variety of drama, exploring scripts that vary by topic, playwright gender and ethnicity, and decade written. Previous scripts include Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire, Athol Fugard’s Master Harold...and the

Audience Enrichment: The Play Club & page to stage boys, Quiara Alegria Hude’s Water By The Spoonful, SuzanLori Parks TopDog/Underdog, Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, and Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: Parts 1 and 2. In addition to The Play Club, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company has introduced Page to Stage as part of our adult educational programming. Similar in foundation to The Play Club, Page to Stage focuses on an in-depth study of four scripts to be produced by the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. For each script the Page to Stage group meets three times at different stages during the rehearsal process to witness, discuss, and experience the art of bringing a script from the “page” to the “stage.” The 2014 Page to Stage group will focus on Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities, Lyle Kessler’s Orphans, William Hauptman and Roger Miller’s Big River, and Walton Jones’s 1940’s Radio Hour. Participants of our Page to Stage program will join us for a reading of each script with the cast and creative team, a staging rehearsal, and for a post show discussion following a viewing of each production. If you are interested in joining The Play Club or Page to Stage, please visit lakedillontheatre.org for more information, or call Tim Paré at 970.513.9386, ex.106.

Youth Educational Programs

Since the inception of the Young People’s Theatre Workshop in 1995, The Lake Dillon Theatre Company has been committed to providing theatrebased education for youth. As of 2014, the Lake Dillon Theatre Company’s educational programming has expanded to reach artists of all ages. The LDTC offers educational opportunities in the form of Workshops, Classes, Internships, and Intensives. Our youth programs serve artists ages 7-13, our teen programs 14-18, and our adult programs are for artists ages 18 and up. Educational Director Tim Paré shares, “Our educational mission is rooted in the process of creative collaboration. We work alongside the students to develop and design individual goals that allow each student to be engaged,

74%

of youth who participate in arts and/or theatre-based education programs “more easily see themselves graduating from high school” because theatre education promotes critical thinking.

85%

of youth “feel better about themselves because they help others” because theatre education promotes self-identity and cooperation.

87%

of youth “have more respect for young people from other cultural, racial, or ethnic groups” because theatre education promotes empathy and diversity.

78%

of youth “work better with others on a team” because theatre education promotes teamwork.

Our process encourages personal as well as creative development by supporting the model of the 21st Century Skills Set.” Through recent partnerships with the Summit Foundation, The Kerr Foundation, Vail Resorts Echo, Alpine Bank, Climax Molybdenum, Everist Materials, and the Rotary Club of Summit County, the LDTC continues to offer scholarships to eligible students to participate in our programs. For more information about upcoming Youth Workshops programs, please visit us at www.lakedillontheatre.org.

“For the last decade, our kids have been involved with The Lake Dillon Theater Company Youth programs. I credit their confidence to speak in front of crowds and their unending love of theatre to the education department of LDTC. It’s been a fantastic experience, and the summer play is always a highlight. Thanks!”

Ron Ivory & One on One has rightly earned itself the status of “summer staple” at the Lake Dillon Amphitheater, the Summit County community’s favorite place to see a live performance during the summer. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company took a few moments to ask Ivory about his career and passion for music. As a Colorado native, you have performed for all types of audiences, what is special about performing outdoors in Colorado? You can’t beat the scenery in Colorado, and it just makes people happy and full of love. The music gives a refreshing and feel-good energy to it all. Performing outside in Colorado is when I feel I give my best performance. Ron Ivory & One on One specializes in Motown and other vocal centered material. What drew you most to that genre? I grew up exposed to a lot of genres of music because my Mom loved music: blues, jazz and soul music. I started appreciating the Motown sound more at about 13 years old when I was asked to join a quartet who was performing Motown and Classic Soul. I was always a Temptation fan even before I started singing formally with a group. About 10 years ago I was asked to do an R&B performance for a Jazz series in a local nightclub in Aurora. I asked the promoter if it was okay to try something new and different if they had the extra money in their budget. She thought it was a good idea and there launched One on One. How do you connect with your audience? I connect with my audience by sending out and exercising my energy and excitement when I’m on the stage. I try to make it as personable as possible giving them 120% of myself. I’ve learned the audience knows when you’re genuinely sincere about a song, having a good time, and love what you do. It’s very infectious, and my band feeds off that same energy and spirit of the music. It’s all one party with them, and I don’t exclude anyone when it comes to singing to and connecting with my audience, handicapped, mentally challenged, young and old, black or white. Thus the name “One on One!” 28 | 20th Anniversary Season

What was your first strong memory of absolutely knowing you wanted to be a performer? My absolute memory of wanting to be a performer was singing with my first group when I was 13 years old and saw the look and smiles on people’s faces during and after a performance, even those who came hatin’ at first (usually guys because of the screaming girls). By the end of the performance those guys were giving us our props and kudos! As I got older I fully realized it goes deeper than that, and if you do it right a couple’s gonna fall in love, someone will have come out of a depression or sadness, and at least for that moment someone will exercise the love and joy in their heart to the perfect stranger next to them. What do you try to accomplish with your music? With my music I try to accomplish its power of healing and overall having everyone feeling good when they leave. If I’m not totally exhausted at the end of a performance I haven’t done my possible best. I want everyone to feel what I feel soulfully and enabling then to release all those great feel good chemicals our bodies produce and release. TOP: Ron Ivory (far right) and One on One

Ron Ivory and One on One is a quartet showcasing Motown, Classic Soul and Old School Rhythm and Blues. This quintessential quartet features songs from the 50’s thru the 90’s, including songs by artists such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Platters, The Contours, Al Green, The Stylistics, The Isley Brothers, The Dells, and many more. With these four extraordinary vocalists and the incredible resonance of the Miles Apart Band, Ron Ivory & One on One is sure to bring back memories and ensure great new ones.

Season Line Up

What is the greatest challenge to enduring as a public performer over such a long span? I think the greatest challenge of performing all those span of years is staying fresh with the performance and reinventing yourself with out sacrificing the authenticity of the music. The other challenge is maintaining a caliber of performers who in this business come and go for various reasons. The Four Tops and I believe the Dells never changed members in their 40 some years in existence and performing until they started passing on. Now that’s a challenge and blessing! For folks unfamiliar with One on One, what can people look forward to in seeing you live in Dillon in 2014? Those who haven’t had the experience of seeing One on One perform yet can look forward to seeing the most authentic

Looking Ahead

The “20th Anniversary” Season REGIONAL PREMIERE

MOUNTAIN PREMIERE

By Craig Wright Opening january 17

By JOHN ROBIN BAITZ Opening February 28

GRACE

OTHER DESERT CITIES

Directed by Christopher Alleman Featuring Melanie Beck, Joshua Blanchard, David Farrington, & Bob Moore

Directed by Christopher Alleman Starring Jennifer Condreay (EDWARD ALBEE’S SEASCAPE, DOUBT: A PARABLE)

Evangelical husband and wife Steve and Sara leave a dreary life in Minnesota for sunny Florida and the hope of fast money from turning abandoned hotels into a chain of gospel-themed inns. An exploration of faith in a fallen world, GRACE explores the modern malaise of spirituality that can unexpectedly change and challenge us from within.

When struggling writer and recovering addict Brooke Wyeth announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal, tragic event in the family’s history, her parents, aunt, and brother are forced to confront their own differing recollections of what happened years before. As bitingly hilarious as it is devastatingly poignant, OTHER DESERT CITIES reveals how family secrets and the mirages of truth and illusion that encompass them can be as hopeful, dangerous, and devastating as an oasis in the California Desert.

“GRACE brings refreshing—though far from reassuring— complexity to what is fast becoming the most urgent philosophical issue of our time.” —LA Times “A brave and pitiless attempt to understand the sources of faith and devotion.” —LA Weekly.

“Astutely drawn…juicy and surprising.” —NY Daily News. “Power, passion, and superbly crafted palaver stippled with blow darts of wit” —New York Magazine.

SWEET CHARITY

BY COLEMAN, FIELDS, AND SIMON OPENING JULY 11 Directed and Choreographed by Adam Estes (THE WORLD GOES ROUND, RESPECT) A dance hostess and hopeless optimistic, Charity Hope Valentine muddles through life in New York City looking for meaning through a pair of busted rose-colored glasses. But when she finally meets the proverbial man of her dreams, Charity learns that fantasy and reality seldom go hand in hand. With a classic score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious but moving book by Neil Simon, SWEET CHARITY is one woman’s story of searching for her self in an ironic and cynical 1960s New York.

“With a zippy book by Neil Simon and some equally zingy songs by composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity has been an enduring favorite since its debut in 1966.” – Backstage.com “A sort of fairy tale world that just goes straight to your heart without stopping at any reality signposts.” – Chicago Sun Times 30 | 20th Anniversary Season

Conceived by bill meade Created by Richard Maltby, Jr. Opening August 29

From the opening chords of vintage rockabilly to the searing ballads of love and deep faith, RING OF FIRE packs a score that provides a rich fabric in which to lay down the story of the legendary Johnny Cash. RING OF FIRE gives Cash’s music the spotlight as an ensemble of five talented actor/musicians celebrate the songs that are such a part of our collective American experience.

“What we see in this spectacular production is a huge slice of Americana, the country with warts and hopes and dreams and horrors and fears. The country that suffered but always somehow triumphed.” – OnMilwaukee.com “A thrill for true Johnny Cash aficionados.” – BroadwayWorld.com

DOUBT: A PARABLE) Deserted in childhood, Treat and Phillip live together in a dilapidated row house in North Philadelphia, surviving on odd jobs and petty thievery. But the brothers’ complacent lifestyle is interrupted when Treat kidnaps an unsuspecting Chicago gangster named Harold with the idea to ransom him for some fast cash. Disturbingly funny and surprisingly tragic, ORPHANS examines our universal, instinctive struggle for success and connection amidst the vanishing illusion of the American dream.

Mark Twain’s timeless classic tale propelled by an awardwinning score from Roger Miller sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom. BIG RIVER brilliantly brings to life Twain’s American South, expertly intertwined into a quiltlike patchwork of Americana archetypes and themes that celebrates the complex landscape of a changing nineteenthcentury America.

“A classic American musical with the most fetching score of the decade.” — Time Magazine

“Theater for the senses and emotions” – The New York Times “As wise and knowledgeable about the human condition as Tennessee Williams… something the viewer can’t ignore” – Los Angeles Times

1940’s RADIO HOUR By Walton Jones Opening November 14

Directed by Wendy Moore Directed by Charles Wheldon Starring Harvy Blanks (DRIVING MISS DAISY) and Kim Staunton Exhausted from delivering a powerful speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. cools down in a lonely Memphis hotel room when an unexpected visit from a feisty maid compels him to confront his own humanity and the fate of our nation. THE MOUNTAINTOP eloquently and powerfully imagines Dr. King’s final night before his assassination, fusing theatricality with spirituality to reach a summit that will leave audiences breathless.

1940’s RADIO HOUR captures the spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant Strike Up the Band and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. A hilariously anxious producer of a 1940’s radio show copes with an intoxicated lead singer, a cab driver who wants a chance in front of the mic, a bubbly waitress whose talent outshines her lack of wit, and the trumpet player who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller. A classic celebration of nostalgic Americana, 1940’s RADIO HOUR is a patriotic holiday celebration for every American generation.

“[THE MOUNTAINTOP] crackles with theatricality and a humanity more moving than sainthood.” — NY Newsday

“Totally exhilarating hour of singing, dancing and funny commercials.” - The New York Daily News

“As audacious as it is inventive…[a] thrilling, wild, provocative flight of magical realism…Hall keeps her audience guessing…” —Associated Press

Art Meets Science at the 4th Annual Battle of the Geeks

2013 Battle of the Geeks: The Theatre Nerds

The Lake Dillon Theatre Company theatre nerds will defend their 2013 victory against the Keystone Science School science geeks during the Fourth Annual Battle of the Geeks softball exhibition game on Sunday, August 10. The David Olbright Memorial Field in Dillon serves as the battleground for the two teams. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Attendees can be the top bidder at the “ump auction” and call the game for an inning. Donations pledged for each run batted in support both organizations. The Keystone Science School science geeks lead the series 2-1. When asked why sports, science, and theatre lovers of all kinds should attend the game, KSS Executive Director Ellen Reid explains, “It’s a unique event in the county bringing together staff who not only perform Broadway songs and silly camp skits but also put their hearts and souls into a real game of softball. It’s light-hearted fun with a dash of competitive spirit thrown in.” A $10 donation supporting both organizations is requested, but not required. All proceeds from donations and sales will be split evenly between Keystone Science School and the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. For more information, visit www.lakedillontheatre.org or www.keystonescienceschool.org.

Making a Difference

Donating Stock

There are many ways to donate needed resources to help the LDTC. Most people understand that they can donate material goods to charities and then claim the value of the items as a tax write off. However, many don’t realize that you can do the same thing with intangible items such as stock. Donating stock to a charitable organization does not provide a dollar-for-dollar tax deduction, but can still reduce a person’s tax liability. There are several factors to consider when donating securities to the LDTC or any other nonprofit organization. The first is to make sure the organization is a non-profit. You can only deduct contributions made to an organization that is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Also be sure to discuss the plan with your tax advisor or financial planner. It will only benefit you if you have a tax liability that the donation will offset! The best asset to donate is an appreciated stock or mutual fund. Donating appreciated stock/mutual fund allows you to avoid paying capital gain on the stock. Instead, the charity will sell the stock and realize the gain. As the charity does not pay taxes, there will be no capital gain paid. LDTC has a brokerage account through Alpine Bank. To donate stock call the office and get the transfer numbers from the LDTC staff or visit the LDTC website. Then you will relay this information to your broker, who will then complete the transfer. If you do not have a broker but handle your stocks on your own call the transfer agent and give them this information. When you receive confirmation from your broker that the stock or other security has transferred make a copy of the form for your tax file. You will also receive a tax note from the LDTC. Give a Heads up: Please be sure to let the LDTC staff know that you are sending some stock their way. If you do not they will have no way of knowing that you donated the stock.

Staff Spotlight

Meet Tim Paré, Director of Education

Tell us about your theatre and educational background. I grew up in Michigan where I was immersed in the arts from a young age. My family started taking me to performances when I was just a toddler, and it was only a matter of time before I discovered that I could harness this passion for the arts in a school environment. I attended a Performing Arts High School, which prepared me for my undergraduate experience. I was fortunate to have inspirational teachers, who were perhaps slightly unorthodox. My favorite educators were all cut from the same cloth; they were the few who encouraged me to think outside the box. It’s no surprise that my educational foundation is rooted in creative expression, risk taking, and self-discipline. It’s no surprise that I operate today under this same model, encouraging my students to actively find solutions that inspire, excite, and engage each one of them. What attracted you to Summit County and the Lake Dillon Theatre Company? The Lake Dillon Theatre Company produces exciting shows that challenge performers and audiences alike. It has been such a

delight to be part of an organization that equally celebrates art, education, and community. Summit County is such a wonderful place to call home. Aside from the beauty and the outdoors, the people who populate Summit County are unlike any I’ve encountered before. The community and organizational support that I’ve experienced this far ignites my passion for the arts. Why do you feel theatre education is important for communities? Arts education supports learning on levels beyond knowledge. Arts education leads youth to develop expressive, creative and passionate methods of reasoning. In focusing on developing these personal, social, cultural skills the benefits of arts education can be evaluated based on a student’s engagement in all activities outside of the arts. How can theatre serve as a tool for other types of education, outreach, and awareness? The foundation of our arts education philosophy at The Lake Dillon Theatre Company is rooted in creative engagement. Building upon the 21st Century Skills Set which focuses on developing personal skills like Self-Discipline, Communication, Collaboration, Accountability, and Innovation - we inspire the students to find ways to engage in their studies, activities, and development. No experience is alike for any two students, which is what makes the results so vast and so important.

Tim Paré

serves the Lake Dillon Theatre as the Director of Education. Mr. Paré holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Michigan State University. In NYC, he managed the 501(c)3 Definitions Theatre Company where he helped develop programs such as Inter.Mission and Artist Jam as part of their outreach initiative. Mr. Paré has worked with the Youth Theatre Programs regionally at The Granbury Opera House (TX), Cohoes Music Hall (NY), The Little Theatre on the Square (IL), Warren Consolidated School of Performing Arts (MI), Arts Academy in the Woods (MI), STREB Action Lab’s SLAM (NY) and in 2012 was on the artistic staff at Stagedoor Manor (NY).

Volunteer Spotlight Breckenridge resident and honored volunteer Sharon Anderson shares why she donates her time and talents to The Lake Dillon Theatre Company... Why Do Like Volunteering for The LDTC? I love the feeling of acceptance and camaraderie of volunteering with The Lake Dillon Theatre Company. I also love the professionalism. Instead of the experience I have had with some other organizations of volunteering in a scattered way, the volunteering here feels organized. It is focused, and I feel I am making an impact. What Do You Think Makes Our Theatre Unique? I also love the quality. Compared to many shows I see in Colorado, the shows here are always top notch. They always deserve an A+ all the way around, whether for the acting or the sets or the costumes. I also love the wild bizarre comedy and 40 | 20th Anniversary Season

farce that make tears roll out of your eyes because it is so funny. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company does shows like that better than anyone. Do You Have a Stand Out Memory of The LDTC When I was brand new and had just started to see shows here the staff and volunteers knew my name almost right away. That surprised and impressed me. I was also impressed by the high quality and the consistency. It is hard to pick a favorite memory or a favorite show because they are all so good. What Are You Most Excited For in the 2014 Season? I am excited for the 1st Sunday Cabaret Series. I am pleased that the organization constantly comes up with new and innovative ways to get a diverse group of patrons involved. We have an intimate space, but when you multiply the 50+ seats in our theatre with the numerous activities and performances we offer you can see that we affect a huge number of people within the community and outside of the community. 2014 is going to be a great year for all of us!

volunteers Making Friends and Spreading the Word The Lake Dillon Theatre Company is lucky to have some of the best volunteers around. Many of our outstanding volunteers have served through “Cast of Characters, our membership organization, hosting pre-show events, sharing information throughout our community, and working events to make sure our patrons feel welcomed and informed. As part of our 20th Anniversary season and our commitment to making the entire organization even stronger, we have reorganized this branch of the Lake Dillon Theatre Company and changed the name to the Community Outreach Committee. This group will be even more active during 2014 reaching out to our community with education about our programs and performances and providing ways for volunteers to get more involved.

The Summer Celebration, 2010

If you would like to join our team of friends and advocates, please contact our administrative offices at 970.513.1151. Thanks to all of our 2013 Cast of Characters for the dedication and loads of fun. We are proud and honored to have these dedicated volunteers doing important work. We apologize for any errors or omissions in this list.

We are your partners in creating a great quality of life for Summit County residents and visitors. The Lake Dillon Theatre Company brings exciting, high quality theatre to people of all ages and backgrounds. We help patrons connect with friends and neighbors and add fun and adventure into their life through the magic of great storytelling. Our patrons come from Summit County and all over the world. In fact, many of our patrons travel to Summit County from other areas specifically to see our shows and concerts. Summit County would not be as exciting for locals and tourists without us. Our county supports hundreds of bars and restaurants, but only a few cultural institutions. And of those organizations, we have the longest record of producing a wide variety of year-round programing for our community. Our contributions to the cultural life of Summit County and all of Colorado include: • More performances and events than any other arts organization in the county. • A greater diversity of programs than any other local arts organization. This includes outdoor concerts, late night cabarets, plays, musicals, educational offerings and musical reviews. • High impact educational opportunities for youth and adults. We offer year round workshops and classes for youth and adults, arts programing within local elementary schools and annual theatre trips for adults to New York City and The Utah Shakespeare Festival. • An enhanced audience experience. Our intimate space, combined with our ongoing panel presentations and preand post- show educational discussions, allow audience members to get even more out of their experience. By joining us at the Lake Dillon Theatre you help support high quality theatre in our community. Our audiences are the most important part of our mission and organization.

Thank you being part of the magic that we can only create together.

As artists, we here at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company particularly admire and appreciate the many people who work in creative industries throughout our county and bring beauty into all of our lives. We are proud to enjoy the partnership and support of many exceptional interior designers and high quality home care specialists. Whether you are a full time resident or enjoy a second home here in the county we encourage you to discover how each of the businesses listed here can bring ease, elegance and beauty into your life. Please be sure to tell these businesses that you saw their advertisement in the Lake Dillon Theatre Company OVATION Magazine.
