Do you Suffer from Angina? September is heart month and we take a look at a persistent condition that is often a precursor to more serious heart disease. Angina or Angina Pectoris (the medical term for chest pain) is a condition causing severe pain in the chest, often spreading to the shoulders, arms, neck and back. It is an indication that blood flow to the heart is inadequate due to narrowing of the arteries and a warning sign of coronary heart disease and if left unchecked a sign of an impending heart attack. Many people ignore or overlook this problem initially, at times mistaking it for indigestion or simply believing it is just an ache or pain that will clear up in time. But consistent chest

pain should be checked by a doctor. But prevention is always better than cure. To avoid developing angina and subsequent heart disease, maintain a healthy lifestyle. • Stop smoking • Eat better – more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods • Get active • Keep your blood pressure stable • Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight if you are overweight • Keep a check on your cholesterol and take steps to lower it if it is too high • Manage your stress levels Keep your heart healthy – it’s what keeps you alive!

Sitting too long may increase your cancer risk: If you’re spending a lot of time sitting every day, either in front of the TV or at work, you may be at higher risk for developing certain types of cancer. The study found an additional two hours a day of sedentary behavior was linked to an 8% increase in colon cancer risk, a 10% increase in endometrial cancer risk and a 6% increase in risk for lung cancer. It did not find the same connection for breast, rectum, ovary and prostate cancers or for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Researchers came to these conclusions by analyzing 43 existing studies - that included more than 4 million study participants and 68,936 cancer cases - to measure the relationship between hours spent sitting and certain types of cancers. This does not constitute medical advice or a medical claim for any product of any nature whatsoever. Consult a qualified health practitioner for diagnosis or treatment of any disease or medical condition.

Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health The mouth is part of the body, and therefore needs to be taken care of for the health of the whole body. We often ignore bleeding or tender gums, while an irritation or pain elsewhere in the body would mean a trip to the doctor. Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive – they can tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be developing a disease. Poor oral hygiene causes the mouth to look and smell bad, and can actually lead to other health problems, including: -Oral and facial pain -Problems with the heart and other major organs. -Digestion problems What you can do Seeing a dentist regularly helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition

and hygiene, growth and development problems and improper jaw alignment. At home, you can practice good oral hygiene: -Brush for two to three minutes, at least twice a day. -Floss daily to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can't reach. -Eat a healthy diet to provide the nutrients necessary to prevent gum disease. -Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, which may contribute to gum disease and oral cancer. -Exercise preventive care and schedule regular dental checkups — the surest way to detect early signs of gum disease. -It is good for children to have their teeth checked regularly before problems start. This will help them to get used to the visit to the dentist without fear. The dentist can also detect decay and treat it in time Irregular dental visits result in pain, time off from work, and high costs for complex dental treatment.

Small Business Growth and support resources....

It is a fact that: "as a man thinks, so is he".That is exactly what happens when people refer to their businesses as "small businesses", they think "small" when in fact the same amount of energy, time and other resources are used in any business, depending on our goals. Whether you spend a day planning a small, medium or larger business, all of them use 24 hours. Why then can we not just refer to our business as "business" and plan and work on it accordingly. Never think small growth, think growth. In order to grow our businesses we need to adopt an attitude that says: "I am growing my business". Attitude is the difference maker, that’s why bigger businesses are growing slower than what is known as small businesses. Attitude!! In planning the growth of any business, all parties need to have a picture or vision of their expected growth. If it so happens that the vision scares us or is "bigger" than us, then, good, that means there

are enough room for us to grow into. It is unfortunately so that when we do see the "big picture" we are scared to the point of paralyses. We think that we will never make it due to the lack of recourses. We start looking around instead of looking within first. (Like going to shop for ingredients for a cake without taking stock at home first to see what we have). History has shown that we are more resourceful than we think as individuals and if we simply just take stock, we will not only discover our potential but also the value we have with which we can "trade" for those resources we lack. Acupuncture and female hormones The body is an intricate , complicated and delicate machine. Fuel is taken in, in the form of food which is broken down into many different parts and converted and stored for the bodies use. Fuel is burnt using oxygen. This oxygen is transported around the body in red blood cells. Muscles through out the body use this fuel. There is a very efficient waste management system in the form of kidneys and bowels which help get rid of waste products. Delicate control of the whole system is carried out by various hormones released from the Pituitary gland and elsewhere. In the case of women, the hormone situation is far more complicated. Each month the lining of the womb is prepared , for a short window, to receive a fertilised egg for pregnancy. Most of the time the new lining is not used and gets discarded. All under complicated hormonal control. The amount of hormone release and its timing is crucial for a pregnancy to be successful. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin sterile needles into various points on the body, in many cases the limbs. A signal is sent into the nervous system from each stimulated point which we knows helps restore balance in the bodies systems. It enables correct control by the body to re-establish a natural balance. Not only to assist in pregnancies but it can help in other conditions such as menopause or problems with the periods in general. Its safe and yet effective."

Food, Recipes, etc

Hawaiian-style Fruit Salad Recipe by: Bradley Jones

Ingredients 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tbsp rice vinegar chilli flakes cumin 1 cup papaya (diced) 1 mango (medium, diced) 1/4 cup purple onion (minced) 1/2 green pepper (minced) 2 tbsp coriander (finely chopped)

Foods to keep your Heart Healthy! Choosing a diet that is going to ensure good heart health does not mean it needs bland or boring! There are so many wonderful wholefoods to choose from and if you fill your diet with these foods there really won’t be much room left for the foods that will harm rather than heal. Your main focus should always be on good quality vegetables – and plenty of them! Along with avoiding any processed “fake” foods. If there is anything you don’t recognise on the ingredient list then stay away from it. Here are my top 3 heart healthy choices from Natures Choice: • Flaxseeds – these super seeds are high in mono-unsaturated good fats, full of fibre and phytoestrogens and can be hidden easily in all sorts of foods – from yogurt, cereal to home-made healthy bakes and crackers.

08 |reCONNECT Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

Preparation 1. Mix the sugar, vinegar, chilli flakes (to taste) and a pinch of cumin. 2. Add the papaya, mango, onion, green pepper, and coriander. Mix carefully to avoid crushing the fruit. 3. Taste and add salt if needed. 4.

Serve as a side dish for chicken or fish.

Rolled Oats – Oats have for a long time been established as a fabulous heart healthy food as well as being a good source of magnesium, potassium, folate, niacin, calcium and soluble fibre. Top your oats in the morning with fresh berries and natural yogurt to make it extra tasty! Dried beans – rich in B-complex vitamins like niacin, folate as well as magnesium, calcium and soluble fibre, beans can be added enrich any stew or soup as well as thrown onto salads.

Security & Home Improvements 1. 2. 3.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

Prevention of housebreakings Keep all emergency numbers in your cell phone or at hand. Keep keys in a safe place and never leave them in doors or gates, keep an extra set 4. Ensure your burglar alarm is set when leaving home, electric fence is working and that gates close effectively. 5. Ensure your alarm codes are kept confidential and are not accessible to outside parties. 6. When away from home for a lengthy period ensure your mail box is emptied and if possible have a neighbour or LanRoe NHW to keep a regular eye on your property. 7. Advise your private security company or NHW when you are away with contact numbers and where possible key holder details. 8. Before employing workers at your home conduct thorough background checks. Take a copy of their ID document and do a security clearance at the SAPS 9. Ensure you have good outside lighting installed. 10. Cut and trim overgrown foliage, trees, hedges and shrubs. 11. Don’t leave any tools etc. around for would-be criminals. Statistically a high percentage of residential housebreakings can be sourced back to information being fed to criminal elements knowingly or unknowingly from domestic employees. These include full or part time domestic employees and gardeners, or outside sourced window cleaners, tree trimmers, garden services, painters, builders, etc. Employers should be aware any access to house keys, alarm codes, safe contents, etc., increases the risk of housebreakings. It is essential pre and post-employment checks are conducted particularly on directly employed domestic employees. Join LanRoe NHW.
