INTRODUCTION Many people tend to associate nightlife with bars and nightclubs. However, night life is actually entertainment activities done throughout the night till the wee hours. These includes bars and clubs, cinemas, karaoke, billiards and mamak or lok-lok stalls.


CLUBS & BARS The culture often found in bars and clubs would be people socializing, listening to music, dancing and drinking. These places are usually held in a dark environment with loud music. It's to create a soothing environment for people to let-loose.


HISTORY It started in the 1970's where disco was an in thing. Then towards the 1980's it started to evolve into DJ-ing. During the 1990's clubs and bars became a mainstream movement to the youth lifestyle. Where most of the people attended were around 16-25 years old.


DEVELOPMENT Currently, in this century the music played are more EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and instead of finding people at a young age of 16. People of an older crowd aged 18-35 are more common. The environment of these places has developed drastically. Back them, these ‘clubs’ were illegal and were held in warehouses and industrial locations. Currently, it’s a legal entertainment industry and is held in big rooms or shop lots.


SIGNIFICANT (surrounding): Clubs and bars are significant towards the surrounding as it helps bring certain places to life at night. Places like dark alleys or close shop lots would become more lively. The revenue coming in helps the working culture in clubs and bars.


SIGNIFICANT (people) Clubs and bars bring people together. It contributes as a stressreliever for working and young adults.

CINEMA The cinema is a family friendly place. Where people of all ages can be found. People go there to watch the latest films. Cinemas in Malaysia often have a diverse selection of Hollywood, Bollywood, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and even Thai movies.


HISTORY Began in 1933, in the past the screenplays were mostly folk tales, stage plays, legends of fictional or real historical heroes. The movies were all black and white in the past.


DEVELOPMENT Back then, films played in the cinemas were silent and motion. However, in our current decade, we have a large variety of movie selection as well as subtitles in the movies.. Besides that, we can even choose the type of room (IMAX ,3D or even 6D).


SIGNIFICANT

Usually cinemas are held in shopping malls. Cinemas are one of the causes of attracting customers to the mall. In a way, it’s helping the local community by bringing them an income as well as providing jobs for Malaysians. It keeps the malls up and running.


SIGNIFICANT People tend to go to cinemas to kill time. However, it is also a way they use to broaden their insight on the life outside of Malaysia. In a way, they use this method to educate themselves with the different cultures. Families and friends also use this as a medium to spend time with their loved ones.



MAMAK & LOK-LOK Many Malaysians spend their free time in Mamak and Loklok stalls. Mamak stalls are placed along the streets at night to cater to the large amount of customers. Mamak stalls are opened 24/7. Whereas, Loklok stalls are usually found in trucks by the roadside.


HISTORY Mamak and loklok started in the 19th century. Mamak known as Indian muslims came to Malaysia during that period. They are the ones who brought in Murtabak, roti canai and teh tarik. Whereas, loklok is more of a Chinese cuisine which started in the 1800's. The idea came from a combination of satay and steamboat.


DEVELOPMENT Loklok used to be sold in push carts. However as time passed, loklok were being sold in mini trucks. Eaten by the road side

The mamak food in Malaysia used to be influenced by the Indians. However, as time passed, more of the Thai spices were used in Mamak stalls. Making it a combo of Thai, Indian and Malay taste.


SIGNIFICANT These food stalls are significant to an area as they attract people to the dark streets at night. Not only does it bring people in but it creates a lively and joyful atmosphere.


SIGNIFICANT It allows the public to relax by watching football, smoke freely and chat with friends. Food is also very affordable! So Malaysians tend to spend their time here.


Mostly students and working adults in their 30's & 20's are here during the late night. the food served is also halal, therefore a mix diversity of people is found.


BILLIARDS In “Billiard Clubs� usually you can find people playing billiards (commonly known as pool), snooker or even darts. These places are usually not brightly lighted and the air there is smoky. It's more common to find males playing this game compared to females.


Billiards started off in the 15th century. In the 19th century, the “pool room” became a betting parlor. After WWII, the excitement of pool died down. A decade later, it was revived and became a luxury game with upscale rooms.

Billiards used to be an outdoor game (like golf) in the past. It then slowly evolved into an indoor table game during the 17th century. In the past, people acknowledge these places as unsafe and a place for gansters or troubled adolescents. However, people in our current decade now view “Billiard Clubs� as a place for friendly competition.

SIGNIFICANT

Usually billiard clubs are open throughout the day. However, only a crowd can be seen during the evening and on wards. Billiard clubs are usually located at dark or areas with little people. In a way, it attracts people to areas with little people. Bringing income for the other shops nearby.

SIGNIFICANT Billiard is a well-known sport. Some people go there for practice where as they are others who just want to spend time with their friends. It's also favored by many smokers as smoking isn't prohibited. As it's a game of concentration, it also ease their minds from the stress, or problems in their day to day life. Besides that, adult of all ages can be found here. Even people in their late 60's!



Nightlife is an important culture for us Malaysians. It's a way for us to spend time with our families, friends and loved ones. Besides that, it also provides us with an activity instead of spending the entire time at home.! As for these different nightlife activities, there are quite similar to each other. As nightlife and clubs, and .mamak more students and adults in their 20's to early 30's can be seen. However, places like Mamak and the cinema are filled with families bonding together. Billiards and the Cinema is one of the most unique nightlife as older people can be found spending their time here.


The most captivating thing about the Malaysian nightlife culture is that you can see a large diversity of people. Let it be Chinese, Malays, Indians and even foreigners! They are seen talking, playing and enjoying their time TOGETHER. Nightlife really brings out the beautiful diverse culture in Malaysia.
