PRESIDENTS MESSAGE It was terrific to see so many of you (119 horses and 140 exhibitors) at our Annual All Arabians Classic, May 5-8., at Thunderbird Show Park. Thank you so very much for supporting our show through sponsoring classes. We had performance classes for R 17 and 3, as well as Dressage and Sport Horse classes for R5 and 17. We celebrated Horse Achievement Awards with parties galore: Santa Fe Kool and owner Tatjana Kelch, Takin Care of Business and owner Ali Demers, Blond James Blond and ES Miss Kitty with owner Marla Patterson as well as Tango Tilly and owner Suzanne Calnan. Thank you to each of the owners, moms, dads, husbands and friends who organized the beautiful presentations and prepared all the party food and beverages-Delicious! On top of all this, we held our annual Banquet on the Friday night of the competition! Our afternoon session finished at 4:20 and by 6pm, we had 170 + guests sitting at tables in our performance arena! Sales horses were presented, then the barbecues started up and hamburgers, salads, cupcakes and cake were served. We announced 21 Awards: Champion, Reserve Champion and Top 5’s plus gave out 9 Perpetual Trophies. Our Silent Auction tables were busy and next year we will change our Live Auction format. Thank you to all those that participated in our piggy back race, sack race and three legged race. It was a great spectator sport, too.

Congratulations STLA King Midas and owner Bonnie Schneider. On to our next event, the Double Main Ring Qualifier R4 and R17 Fall Frolic, Sept. 15-17, Thursday to Saturday. Our two performance judges are Pam Zimmerman (US Nationals Judge 2016 Hunter Panel) judging for R4 and Gail Grubb from Washington judging for R17. Both sets of results will be used for our Annual Awards totals. Our Dressage and Sport Horse classes will be judged by Sheila Skene from Victoria, who is also qualified to judge Western Dressage. We are looking for class sponsors and silent auction items. We have two breedings available for you to bid on for the 2017 Breeding Season: Errowe (Eminant X AFA Sienna) 2012 Grey Stallion and Eminant (Aicyng x Elkana) 1996 Grey Stallion, generously donated to our club from Aude Espourtielle of Deor Farms. We will begin the bidding process Sept. 1 and bidding will remain open until Dec. 31. laura leitch I became involved with PRDA in January 2013 as a way to fill some spare time and gain volunteer experience. It was apparent very quickly that it would be more than “just volunteer experience”. When I first called to find out if they were accepting new volunteers, I had no idea what a huge part of my life it would become. Fast forward to today, and I can’t imagine my life without PRDA. The friends I’ve made, the opportunities I’ve had and the things I’ve experienced are irreplaceable. Depending on the rider, the level of assistance varies. Some riders are completely independent, while others require a leader for the horse as well as two side walkers. The purpose of the volunteers is not to simply hold the rider on the horse and walk them in circles around the ring, but rather offer the minimal assistance possible that the rider needs to complete the task at hand. The goal is for every rider to progress towards independence while allowing them a safe environment to learn. Executive director Michelle presenting the Spirit of PRDA award
Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities (PRDA) is a therapeutic riding center located directly across from Campbell Valley park in Langley, BC. PRDA is home to approximately fifteen therapy horses (and three minis!) and accommodates just over 170 riders each week. Riding programs are offered for children and adults with a wide range of physical and/or cognitive challenges. There are some contraindications to therapeutic riding, such as scoliosis with a curvature of the spine over 30°, or grand mal seizures that have occurred within the past six months, but the majority of riders can be accommodated. Children as young as three years old can be registered in lessons, and there is no upper limit on age – as long as the rider is still healthy enough to ride they are welcome at PRDA.

When I first started volunteering, I was leading a teenage boy with both autism and downs syndrome. He is non-verbal, didn’t enjoy trotting, and at the time was not able to steer or stop his horse independently. I am still working with the rider three and a half years later and being able to see his progression is amazing. Now he can ride independently at the walk, steering and stopping as required, and LOVES to trot. There have been many occasions that I’ve watched him complete the task at hand and all I can think is how cool its been to see him grow as a rider. Another rider that I have been able to work with is a kindergarten aged boy who has arthrogryposis. This is something that I had never heard of before - it is acongenital disorder that affects the mobility of many of the joints in a person’s body. In this rider’s case, the
horse gives him the mobility and freedoms that he otherwise lacks. Every week I get to see this rider progress towards independence as he is currently working on being able to steer, start and stop his horse with less and less assistance from the volunteers working with him. As a side note, Lee Pearson is a great example of the well known quote “in riding horses, we borrow freedom�. Lee is a ten time Olympic gold medalist in para dressage, and also has arthrogryposis. On multiple occasions, the rider that I work with has watched videos of Lee Pearson online, and comes to his lesson saying that one day he will ride just like him. And I believe him.

Apart from working with riders in classes, I have also spent time at PRDA body clipping some of older horses that couldn’t shed their coat, braiding horses for shows, doing barn chores as needed and helping to organize the annual, year end horse show for the riders to show of their skills. The past two years I have been able to help create the obstacle course component of the horse show. Last year, we had a rodeo theme that included a paper mache cow and three women dressed up as sheep. This year, we chose a camping theme that required to riders to guide a lost hiker back to his tent, while avoiding the bear. During the year end show this year, I was honored to receive the Spirit of PRDA award. This perpetual award has been around for many years, but was recently renamed in memory of Hanneke Saunders. I am very thankful to have received this accolade and plan to continue my involvement with PRDA. The Arabian Horse Industry consists of a diverse group of people who ultimately all have one thing in common An indescribable love for the Arabian Horse. The competitions themselves are exhilarating and give an opportunity for each rider to display their long hours of training and hard work. However; like any sport there are ups and downs within any competition. Between the good rides and the not so good rides, at times it seems people become consumed by their natural competitive drive. If it isn’t the competition sometimes exhibitors find themselves wrapped up in the politics of it all. Whether you are competing at the local level or the National level, the pressure of competition can be too much to handle on your own. Which is why the friendships and bonds you develop are what get you through both the best and hardest times of competition.

We have all heard the saying “It takes a village”, what better than having a village of friends that you know have your back. Having a support system is the back bone to any successful and enjoyable life. We are fortunate enough to have become close because of our love for our Arabian horses and that friendship is something that continues well beyond the horse shows. It is important to embrace and nurture the friendships created through these beautiful animals and be thankful for the people it has introduced into our lives, blue ribbons aside! From the late nights and early mornings to the tough rides and victory passes. The countless laughs made from show to show, to the hikes, adventures and evenings filled with wine that lead to mornings we will never forget. Those who live miles from us but are always just a call away. What is your best memory from showing at Do you have any show ring quirks, superstitions Canadian Nationals? or mantras you do before your show? My best memory from Canadian Nationals was the first time I ever recieved the champion rose blanket. I always loved the movie “Dreamer” as a kid and when I saw the blanket of flowers put on dreamers back I always dreamt of having that happen to me one day.
A show ring quirk I do before a class or at least before equitation patterns is that I always show DJ the pattern sheet to make sure he knows what he’s supposed to do. Who has been your biggest role model?
What are your plans now that you have graduated? My biggest role model is Brenda Driediger. She has taught me so much; from learning how to clip a horse, My plans now that I’ve graduated are going to KPU to training my own horse. She has taught me that horses to obtain my degree in Business Entrepreneurial have “buttons” and how to use those to my advantage. Leadership so I’ll be going to University for 4 years. BARN NEWS Semiahmoo Stables Home to Allison Morris Arabian Training Many of us can still recall our first Regional show and for the 4 Erceg sisters, Jayne, Hanna, Debra and Olivia, Region V Sport Horse Arabian Celebration June, 2016 in Auburn, Washington, was no exception. Sharing their 2 PB geldings, Mateo and Mossimo WA ( aka Mojo,) the girls garnered 2 Top 5’s , 3 Reserves and 2 Championships in Western and English Dressage and Dressage Seat Equitation. Also showing her Half Arab mare SS Exquizit Creation for the first time, Marilyn Morris brought home 2 Championships and one Reserve showing in Western Dressage, English Dressage and Sport Horse Mares in Hand. Summer Horse Camps are filling up as we say “good bye” to our 95 lesson students who have been with us this past year. These riders will continue in September in our Accelerated Rider Program as well as prepare for the Equine Canada Rider Level testing.
Reed Training Stables Barn News We have had a busy show season so far, starting off with the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show and then heading into many qualifiers for Regionals. We attended Region 4 in Nampa, Idaho in June with four horses in tow and came home with 1 Unanimous Champion, 4 Reserve Champions and 6 Top Fives. Being the busiest time of the year for many facilities we are off to Region 5 in Monroe, Washington from July 6-9 and then Jada briskly makes her way to Region 3 in Sacramento, California from July 11-16. Reed Training hasn’t attended the Region 3 horse show before and we are looking forward to the wonderful facility, tough competition and not to mention the beautiful (but hot...) weather. Once we wrap up with Regionals its full swing to get ready and head off to the Canadian Arabian Nationals in Brandon, Manitoba from August 14-21. In addition to the many shows the farm is a bustling place these days including the addition of two new puppies that were rescued, Thelma and Louise. Another highlight is the Ray LaCroix clinic that will be taking place September 1-3. There are limited spots that have opened up so if you wish to take part in this educational experience contact Rosemary Reed.
We are also proud to continue our tradition of starting riders and guiding them up through the stages of horse showing so our thanks go out to Delta Riding Club, Langley Riders and Windsum Enterprises Ltd. as well as our own AAHABC and BC Half Arabian Assoc. We would also like to thank Jim Cada and the Arabian Horse Foundation for honouring Natalie with a $1000 scholarship for the 2nd year in a row. Natalie has been busy putting her scholarship support to good use at the University of the Fraser Valley studying Graphic and Digital Design. Her freelance business has taken off this spring with a variety of logo and advertisement designs as well as photography. This summer has provided additional opportunities for Natalie to expand her business to include the equestrian industry, and she is very happy to be embraced and supported by the Arabian community, especially at home in BC. Our horses continue to bring joy to both our family and others. Lukas is right at home with the Sebring Family, where he is loved and shown by Montana. Thank you so much to both Joan and Michelle for giving Lukas the opportunity to share his gifts with another adoring little girl!! The gorgeous Vargas JCA is now lovingly owned by Ann Burgess of Oregon. Together with their trainer Karla Moffitt, Ann and Vargas has begun a successful partnership both in and out of the show ring, winning many ribbons at region 4 shows as well as Top 5 honours in Side Saddle and Western Pleasure classes at the Region 4 Championships last month. Tony has been thoroughly enjoying riding Belle, our 4 year old mare by Black Daniels as well as Ninya, Rebecca’s mare that we bred 17 years ago. Bailey, our 3 year old

To Whom It May Concern: The All Arabians Horse Association of BC (AAHABC) is a registered non-profit Association. We are committed to the progressive promotion of programs and activities for Arabian and Half-Arabian Horse owners and enthusiasts. For over fifty years we have been dedicated to providing great opportunities for the development of all youth and amateur competitors and their horses. AAHABC is a dynamic club. We hold 2 approved horse shows per year and competitors from Canada and the North Western United States attend. Our members voluntarily work hard to ensure that these events are a success. We provide a variety of classes for Youth and Amateurs as well as Open Classes in a variety of disciplines including Hunter Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Sport Horse and Dressage. We believe the competitions, activities and programs we provide are a major contributor to the future of the Arabian Breed and help to build a stronger sense of community.
