Project 2: DĂŠrive Ashley Ludlow Typography 2 Fall 2014 Fredonia, NY 2
DĂŠrive
This project proposed the creation a mobile application focused on a journey through the town of Fredonia, New York. The application is based on the event of going on an unplanned journey taken and not following any specific path with the goal of encountering an authentic experience. This application was created as a proposal to the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce for a hiking app for the Fredonia community and it’s visitors. In this project, I have explored typography and hierarchal grids in a mobile setting. Looking at visual format, typefaces, and organization, I have created an visual interactive experience for hikers. My application is meant to be an adventure activity that encourages exploration in an outdoor setting.

EXPLORATIONS To begin this project, I set out to explore the village of Fredonia via bicycle. I headed out one fall morning with a friend from my home on Temple Street. Heading towards town, we turned onto Risley Street, Forest Place, and also explored Church Street, White Street, and Lambert Avenue. On our journey we found Reinhoudt Bridge and the sitting area on Forest Place along the creek. We also explored the Forestville Cemetary, Barker Commons, the site of the first Gas Well, St. Peter’s Church, and several local businesses. When trying to figure out which route I wanted to focus on for my application, I thought back to my favorite spots, the sitting area by Forest Place, Reinhoudt Bridge, and the small waterfalls nearby. Loving to hike, I decided to ditch the bike and go back on another journey along Canadaway Creek.

JOURNEY The hike begins at the bridge on County Rte 78. Although my app doesn’t require a single path, starting at one end and heading towards the other will help hikers unlock all the stops. After a bit of a hike, hikers reach a large area of fallen trees that need to be climbed over. In the middle of these logs is a firepit where hikers can sit and take a break. Although the next stop is a bit off the path, hikers can explore through a hidden, but well-known path along the creek. On the path there is a meadow trail. The trail includes walking under a tree filled with small pinecones. Continuing the journey down the trail running next to the creek there are several fire pit areas and rocks and trees filled with graffitti. To get down the steep banks, there is a ladder with roots as steps and logs to sit on nearby. Walking further down the creek, jumping from rock to rock, Reinhoudt Bridge is the next stop. The underside of the bridge is filled with graffiti and large rocks. Just past the bridge are a set of mini waterfalls. Shortly after the bridge, there is access to Forest Place. Along the road is a sitting place with benches and a scenic view of the creek and it’s surrounding area. Following the creek, you will reach West Main Street Bridge. This is the end of the journey and brings you to downtown Fredonia.

Reinhoudt Bridge
CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve unlocked the next location.
Reinhoudt Bridge
Players hike down Canadaway Creek until they reach a location and unlock each destination. The app includes a total of seven highlighted locations. Players will need to reach the location in order to unlock it.
Reinhoudt Bridge was built in 1980 in honor of Donald C. Reinhoudt Sr. who was county legislator in 1972 as well as Donald C. Reinhoudt Jr who took the title of World’s Strongest Man in 1979 and World Powerlift Champion 1973–1976.
Once a location is reached, the player can learn more about the history of the creek and the specific stop.

EVALUATION The creation of this mobile application is inspired by my love for adventure and appreciation of nature. I think that this app would be a fun activity to participate in. My attempt was to encourage exploration and provide a way to explore a piece of Fredonia that some people don’t know about. Overall, I think that concepts of the app are pretty fully developed, but would need to be polished if it was a real app. Compositionally, I chose to put a border around my app and created a ‘hamburger’ drop down menu that allows players to switch pages. The menu links to view your GPS location, the weather, wildlife, and a page that shows the progress that the hiker has made. I wanted to create a graphic quality to my app, so I created simple symbols based on positive and negative space. To keep this quality, I chose all of my buttons to be either rounded rectangles or circles. Most of the background is black, or a black and white photograph. I chose to strip the photographs of color so that they visually would stay in the background.
This was also done to help the bright colors of the symbols and buttons stand out. I limited my colors to be a dark grey, white, pink, blue, green, and off-white. Limiting the colors helps the organization and makes the layout look more unified. I chose to use Meta OT as the typeface because it works graphically and has many different weights that translate well in creating visual organization. When making the logo for my app, I wanted to create a simple icon that would translate well as a symbol on an app page. My logo makes reference to the creek and it’s surrounding natural environment. Overall, I am happy with the design of my app. One thing I would probably do differently is to add more hints to where the locations are hidden and more interactive quirks that keep the hike interesting. I like how my app combines social media and nature. A lot of people spend time on their phones wherever they are and this encourages them to be active while doing it.
