In Norman, Oklahoma, college students flood the town from August to May. With the start of the summertime, the flood dissipates and so does the life of the city. As a vibrant college town, the city thrives off of its high student population. Without it, the city is a barren, desolate land of concrete and asphalt. As one walks around the historical downtown of Norman, it is easy to get lost in the dream of the 1950s and the American car culture in its prime.

Proposed Program
To spread the vibrancy throughout the entire city, the city council must look into redeveloping a few districts throughout Norman. The new architectural programs designed for these abandoned districts should be designed to complement each other and focus on the new social and cultural trends. It is a necessity that each program attracts citizens and visitors to travel across the city to then visit another district. CONNECT NORMAN

Narrative Not only must the city look into redeveloping the districts, but they should further look into how the districts connect and relate to each other. The current focus on an outdated car culture should be shifted to favor public transit, like an improved bus system or street car, and safer bike routes. By creating a stronger, new means of transportation, people will be more likely to venture to the districts that had once been forgotten. The redevelopment of a few districts in Norman would cleanse and enliven a city, whose deserted Main Street embodies old-fashioned social and cultural trends. The new design would inspire students to remain in the summer months, instead of fleeing to other cities. By redeveloping the airport, hospital, historical downtown, south research campus, and river districts, Norman could boost its internal city revenue and decrease the daily number of people that leave its city. Through organizing the districts with new architectural programs, the city can create a semi lattice that encourages citizens and visitors to find a sense of place within such a transient city. By connecting districts through new means of transportation, a new magnetic attraction will encourage people to move throughout the districts. CONNECT NORMAN

Museo Cinema Argentina Team Members: Ashley Womack & Nick Nguyen Role: Schematic Design, Graphics, & Diagrams Rome, Italy Fourth Year Studio 2016
Rome is a city deeply embedded with history and culture. The urban fabric of Rome evokes multiple layers of history, from times of antiquity to present day. Rome can be described as an urban environment layered with small corridors, courtyards, sloping streets, and open piazzas. The urban aesthetic has evolved through multiple centuries, yet it continues to embrace its ancient roots. Fragments from the past empire are scattered throughout the city, which represent Rome’s rich history.
Key Features
Examples of Rome’s layering can be found at the project site, Largo di Torre Argentina. Located in the heart of the city, fragments of Ancient Rome are found resting within the site. The ruins have been framed with a glass wall and floor that will encourage people to admire the ruins of Rome’s earliest temples.
Nolli Map Study
Through Nolli’s map, the strong figure ground displays the spatial layout of Rome. Nolli asserted theories about the issues of spatial design in relation to an urban setting. Through the figureground map, Nolli analyzed circulation patterns and what form makes them successful.

Structure System
The structure of the design is based off a simple grid that highlights the ruins of Largo di Torre Argentina. A new piazza is formed by the surrounding buildings; the cinema museum and the Teatro Argentina which stands adjacent to the west of the site. The ground of the piazza is comprised of a structural glass system which sits at the current street level. This system leaves the ruins untouched, but still allows people to experience the ruins. The glass floor suspends from the beams and is anchored by steel rods that create a minimalistic aesthetic. Specific areas of the glass piazza will be kept open to further frame the ancient architecture of the ruins. Largo Argentina is located in a heavy urban setting and lacks vegetation. A living wall system is located on the north side of the piazza; the living wall adds more life to the already bustling site of Largo Argentina. Rome has an issue of wasting water and air pollution ; the living wall helps solve this issue by draining rain water from roof drains while additionally purifying the air. The living wall system is framed by the steel structure of the auditorium.

An important factor to study in Kansas City is its pedestrians and how they travel throughout the city. The River Market area is rich in culture and walkability. Kansas City is like a melting pot for Italian, German, and Greek cultures. The cultures are present in the appearance of the people, buildings, and food. The River Market deemphasizes vehicular circulation and places a focus on pedestrians. The streets are narrow to about two lanes with an area for a pending trolley. The sidewalks are wide, ranging from ten to fifteen feet, which allows room for vegetation, resting areas, lamp posts, and a few bus stops. The area defines the River Market as walkable and pedestrian friendly.

Site Plan
This design optimizes the city’s culture. The site is located in the River Market area of Kansas City, which is a major part of the city. The main walkway into the River Market is carried into the design to promote crosstraffic from the site into the River Market. The design relates to the buildings adjacent to it by filling the corner and aligning with their façades. The parking lot has been changed to meet the parking lot on the southeast corner of the site by sloping up the parking lot to meet it. The apartment spaces are separated by form and alignment from the commercial spaces. The morning light can enter the spaces through high fenestration over the main hallway. The large windows in each apartment focus on the view towards the Missouri River and River Market area of Kansas City.
