TIGHTLY KNIT, MFA THESIS

Refract

[ri-frakt] verb To refract means to alter the direction of a ray of light, sound, heat, or the like as it is passing through a medium of varying density. As designers, we are the medium that refract the direction of design. The concept is our ray of light and we have the ability to control its path.

My Selected Works

My selected works showcase my ability to transform a concept into a visual message. The following pages are a collection of personal favorites that range from branding and packaging, to print and web. All produced from 2011 to 2014.

Objective Choose a director and design a film festival influenced and dedicated to the films of your chosen director. Approach Chasing Sunrise is a hypothetical film festival dedicated to the films of Brazilian director Walter Salles. Most of his films tell a story about travel and self discovery. I chose to transform the present into the past by using analog photography and vintage textures. I customized every element in this project to correlate with this concept. The packaging, photography, and typography were customized to deliver a unique solution that reflects the films of Walter Salles.

Objective Choose a genre of literature and create a series of paperback book covers. Be sure to use typography as the main attraction of the cover and use no more than four colors. Approach This project is about focusing on typography and how I could make type be the main element of design that will catch peoples’ attention. I decided to design around a mystery genre. I also I wanted to combine the idea of food with typography. Each cover tells a story about a hypothetical mystery and involves a play on words and food.

Objective Each student was given a different topic. Based on the topic you received, we were to design a book about how we believe it will evolve in the future. Approach The topic I was given was folklore and I decided to narrow down the topic to Chinese folklore. I researched about the history of it and wanted to express the traditions that have been passed down for centuries. The future that I imagine it to be is foretold through its traditional characters.

Objective Choose a dead dying or defunct brand and rebrand it. Going beyond a new logo, redesign the company into something more than it was originally. Take the brands initial morals and values and bring the company further than what it was. Approach Milton Bradley was a classic American board game company. They were bought out by Hasbro in the late 1990’s. The games were created as a way to bring people together to have fun. So, I decided to take the idea of people having fun and expand it into different opportunities that could be used in current times. This altered the focus from board games to fun community activities.

Objective Choose a moment in time and record your experience. Design a book describing this moment. Experiment with typography and use your own photography. Approach I am from a small town 30 minutes north of San Francisco called Novato. I decided to document the differences that I saw between Novato and San Francisco. The short drive takes me only about 30 minutes and is about 30 miles away. Thus, the meaning of the title 30 minutes per 30 miles. I noticed a lot of differences between the two places even though they really aren’t very far away from each other.

Approach How many Asian American actors can you name that haven’t played the stereotypical role of a nerd, martial artist, or China doll? The focus of this book design was to create a stronger awareness of the effects of Asian stereotypes on American society through personal stories, statistics, and various opportunities for change.

MFA Thesis

A graphic design thesis is different from the average project because of the time, effort, and the personal meaning it has to the one designing. The following project is my thesis, which has taken almost a year to complete—while maintaining a full course load as well as working part-time at various jobs and internships. Thesis projects identify a problem and an objective. Through extensive research, strategizing, and problem solving, the design deliverables offer solutions. My thesis aims to educate children on the importance of knowing Asian American history.

Objective Choose a topic to pursue and perform extensive research. Define your audience, objective, goals, and record your process. Find the opportunity gaps where you can create visual solutions to solve and support your main objective. Approach Asian Americans remain absent from history books taught in schools, which lead to the misconceptions of who we are to the American public. People sometimes see us as foreigners who haven’t actually been here for centuries. The root of the problem was education. To resolve this issue I decided to educate young children so they can carry this knowledge throughout their lives. I decided to design an educational kit about Asian American history that includes lessons about events and people who have contributed towards making the American dream possible.

Thank You My Parents Thank you for the support and always believing in me. Carlo Thank you for always cheering me on. Grad school would have definitely been even more difficult without you. Auntie Margie Thank you for the roof over my head during my time at school. For the never ending potstickers and chow mein. For letting me leave the light on all night while I work tirelessly on homework. And thank you for just being you. Instructors & Advisors Thank you Dave Gottwald, Andrew Loesel, Hunter Wimmer, Christopher Morlan, Phil Hamlett and Mary Scott. I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time, thanks to all of you. Thanks for always pushing me when I thought I couldn’t be pushed any further. Office Thank you for your guidance and support. I’m continually learning from each and every one of you.
