DOCTOR OF MEDICINE UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
“The modern state university has sprung from a demand on the part of the people themselves…The people demand that knowledge shall not be the concern of scholars alone. The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal. This should never be forgotten.” Henry Marshall Tory

CURRICULUM
PROGRESSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The MD Program is dedicated to creating a progressive learning environment, which embraces the abilities and preferences of students through diverse learning opportunities.
The MD Program curriculum is designed to build foundational knowledge and skills in a step-wise fashion. Progressively increasing clinical exposure during Years 1 and 2 leads into a fully immersive clinical learning setting by the beginning of the third year. Four longitudinal courses in physicianship form the backbone of the curriculum. The courses address all aspects of physician development including: professionalism, evidence-based medicine, ethics, health equity, patient safety, patient immersion experience, early clinical experience, communication and physical examination skills.
The MD Program provides many opportunities for active and self-directed learning. Medical students have unlimited access to a full-dissection anatomy lab—an invaluable resource for anatomical study and direct practice of essential skills.
YEARS 1 & 2
YEARS 3 & 4
The primary goal of Years 1 and 2 is to prepare medical students for supervised learning in the clinical environment. Year 1 begins with a foundations course. The material is presented in a series of system-based courses. Each course presents the material in a reasoned progression from basic information to clinical application. By the end of the pre-clinical program, students in the MD Program are competent in medical expert knowledge and ready for the transition to clerkship.
In Years 3 and 4, medical students learn in a supervised clinical environment. The primary role of the student intern is to understand and apply basic knowledge of medical science in a clinical setting. Clinical teaching is interwoven with teaching sessions from experienced residents, allied health professionals and preceptors, many of whom are award-winning educators and researchers.

ACADEMIC SETTING
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
DISCOVERY / TEAM ACTIVE LEARNING
PHYSICIANSHIP
An academic setting that promotes positive outcomes in a strengthened learning environment. This is achieved through the provision of academic counselling and career planning; promotion of academic awards and well-being; ensuring appropriate educational resources are in place; and in maintaining close engagement with all learners and medical educators.
An online learning community provides students seamless access to courses, assessments and evaluation from anywhere at any time. These innovations also include lecture podcasting and personalized online schedules.
Problem-based, interactive, small group learning which allows students to study “real life” cases in the early stages of their education program.
Through service learning opportunities and patient immersion experience, physicianship integrates the longitudinal components of the curriculum to ensure medical students are developing academic knowledge and practical skills concurrently.
RURAL INITIATIVES
INDIGENOUS HEALTH INITIATIVES PROGRAM
ARTS & HUMANITIES IN HEALTH & MEDICINE
Rural Integrated Community Clerkship (ICC) is an educational opportunity for third-year medical students to live and learn in a rich and dynamic rural health care environment. Many other rural opportunities are available through clinical rotations, electives and shadowing.
IHIP actively recruits Indigenous applicants and is a resource for Indigenous medical students throughout their studies. All medical students are welcome to participate in community outreach initiatives, as well as other cultural and service learning experiences. Opportunities to learn with and from Indigenous people, Elders and communities are available.
The AHHM program seeks to balance science and the humanities within the faculty, in order to foster the development of well-rounded health professionals who are skilled, caring, reflexive and compassionate practitioners.

WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES
STUDENT LIFE
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has access to world-class facilities for research, patient care and education. The majority of pre-clerkship education is conducted on the university campus in proximity to the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). During clinical education years, students train at a number of other major health care facilities.
The medical school encourages a life outside of academics, as this will help students grow into wellbalanced physicians. The Medical Students’ Association (MSA) is a gateway for student life within the faculty. Medical students thrive in a medical community which participates in social, academic and athletic events.
