This is a snapshot of work from a group of lovely students who the team and I have really enjoyed working with over the last four years. There has been a few tears and lots of laughter throughout! The intention is that the incorporation of smart technology in this way will stop the temptation for people to constantly use their mobile phone; the ‘Always On’ culture. Blur When you turn on a light, you can clearly recognise shapes and textures of objects in space. Conversely, when you turn off the light, the characteristics of objects in space becomes blurred.
Placements:
Blur is composed of a controller and a pendant lighting. The controller has both sides. One side (Mirror) reflects objects clearly and when this side faces upward, the lighting will be turned on. The other side (Frosted Mirror) reflects objects unclearly and when this side faces upward, the lighting will be turned off.

Emoji Camera The Emoji Camera builds on the photographic abstraction of reality by using machine vision tools to re-code images as assemblages of emoji. These assemblages prompt the poetic imagination to decipher meaning, like reading tarot cards. Placements:

Collins Collins invites the user to experience light through the manipulation of a double sided reflective disc that alters the output reflection.
Placements:
The lucid reflections from the mirror are a reminder of the spontaneous light which occurs throughout the day. On the reverse coloured glass, reflections take notions of the vast amounts of colour that occurs throughout the sky, replicating qualities of natural light inside.

Day + dusk lamps Paired lamps that employ the changing hues of daylight: a cool white day lamp for productive tasks; and a warmer, more sedative dusk lamp to help instil tranquillity.

A limited quantity of light must be consciously shared between the two sources to suit the user’s state of being. Challenging the archetype of a lamp, this provokes a more considered and efficient approach to lighting design, challenging current trends of overuse and under appreciation.

Northshore Life Vest
Placements:
The Northshore Life Vest is the first personal floatation device for athletes. Currently 40% of the RNLI’s annual call outs are responding to water-sports due to a lack of appropriate safety equipment. The vest has been designed alongside the RNLI and athletes, to create a product that does not inhibit comfort or flexibility, while also saving lives with physical and digital technology.

In the event of an emergency, such as an earthquake or a fire, lifts should not be used in multi-storey buildings, therefore the mobility impaired and injured may become trapped. ’Akin’ allows young adults with alcohol-dependent parents to gain a sense of control in their lives by providing them with a platform to help others akin to themselves. Akin aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding alcoholism by encouraging understanding, empathy and openness, empowering users with acceptance that builds self-confidence and self-esteem.

Bagzi Industry shifts and subsequent changes in consumer behaviour have resulted in a paradox; a rise in clothing consumption, against a decline in usage.

Combining seasonal pop-up submission stores with an online platform, Bagzi aims to normalise the recirculation of used clothing. Through a quarterly subscription, users bring unwanted items to corresponding pop-ups, which facilitate the transition of clothing to a resell platform.

Premium T.V. Dining Research reveals that eight in ten people believe that the television is now a big part of modern meal times.
Placements:
The Melameal dinner tray has been designed to stimulate conversation and provoke thought surrounding twenty-first century eating habits in front of the T.V.. Whist drawing inspiration from vintage melamine dinnerware, the Melameal tray uses neglected and forgotten dining values to elevate the sofa meal and reinstate formality.

Domiciliary care is often provided by a loved one. The lack of dignity involved with commodes can cause this relationship to deteriorate. By considering both the user and carer, Stuhl promotes independence and champions dignity to reduce the sensation of feeling like a patient; concealing a commode in a design with such familiarity allows for subtlety, helping the user to retain privacy.

Vita Vita system works as an artificial pancreas automating control of blood sugar levels, providing the correct amount of insulin when the body requires it, with minimum patient intervention.

The system comprises of ‘Vita Sense’, which monitors glucose levels non-invasively, and wirelessly communicates with ‘Vita Pump’. This connects with the sterile, interchangeable ‘Vita Infuse’ providing auto needle insertion to enable insulin provision. Everything is charged in the ‘Vita Hub’ - a portable display and storage unit. User management and control are capable by the ‘Vita App’. It is discreet and wearable directly on the body for an active lifestyle.

Robi | Air Quality Buddy for Kids
Placements:
1.7M children die from air pollution each year. Southeast Asia is the most affected area due to large populations and concentrated industry. Robi is an air quality pet for kids, providing clean air when pollution is dangerous. Robi’s changing mood teaches kids about air quality and uses gamification to inspire positive behaviour.
