Historical Background The city of Syracuse, in Onondaga County, NY, was established in 1825. Situated on the Erie Canal and near major railroads, it was nicknamed the “Salt City” due to the brine springs nearby. The city thrived until the 1950s, when businesses failed and moved away. Since then, the city’s population has declined. The Chimes building was an important cultural moment for the Syracuse as it brought a new sense of luxurious architectural design to the downtown area. The building was designed by the Architectural firm, Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. They developed numerous projects throughout the East Coast of the United States. Their most prominent project was the Empire State Building that was built in 1930. Most of the projects from Shreve, Lamb and Harmon are derivative of the desired luxury at the time in the early to mid 1900’s.

Significance of Adaptive Reuse
The Chimes Building
Adaptive Reuse is important because it gives the opportunity to revive a historical space which not only helps the environment but also can change how people interact with that area of the city. This project is an opportunity to redesign and bring back to life the now called 500 Building. It is a chance to become a new desired destination spot and location within Downtown Syracuse.
The Chimes building got its name from electronic chimes on its roof that rang every 15 minutes and reportedly struck whenever Syracuse University won a football game. The chimes stopped working during World War II, but the building continued to be called the Chimes Building until the 1970s, when the name was changed to the 500 Building.

Concept: Modern Regeneration
The design will incorporate many biophilic elements to reference natural regeneration, but also feature well-refined, luxurious spaces which lead to a new revival and purpose for the building.
The Chimes Building was once a lively and integral part in the heart of the city, Downtown Syracuse. The concept of “Modern Regeneration” promotes the idea of regenerating the significance of the Chimes Building while also establishing a new hub for regrowth, energy, and evolution/innovation. The building and interior spaces have nods to historical and Art Deco elements, but mainly incorporate refined, serene, and organic environments that add value to the experience and draw a new crowd to revive the space. The added gym, cafe, and working spaces are a heart, circulating people through the experiences and generating new life for the city.
Mission The mission for this project is to design a unique, inviting professional working space coupled with a premium fitness experience through thoughtful organization/layout, amenities, and accommodations in order to revive the Chimes Building and uplift Downtown Syracuse.

Coasis - Perspective This snapshot shows the South side of Coasis, a co-working office space, where workers can gather together and have lunch in the centralized area or opt for individual time by the modular flex space. This area is fitted with a ceiling installation which provides lighting, warmth, but most importantly dampens noise since it will be the most concentrated area of the office.
