ASH MAYBERRY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

PURPOSE STATEMENT The values that have shaped me as a designer have been derived from the very fortunate opportunity to live in two foreign countries. My life has afforded me the chance to reside in Japan with my father’s Air Force Career, and Slovenia with the University of Ljubljana’s Student Exchange program. It was during these times that I have been able to personally observe how culture and history influence design styles, and how these factors influence the way people participate in the environment around them. The various observations I have made throughout these experiences have lead me to an overall simple conclusion: bringing communities together increases quality of life for all. Two of my main, long term career goals include planning for mixed use community development projects, as well as public transit development projects. I feel these two types of initiatives can make a large impact in the world during a time of global transition to sustainable planning. But no matter how large or small a space, I believe it is my duty as a future landscape architect and planner to use my influence as a professional to encourage community gathering, interaction, and promote physical and social well-being.

PARK PLAN BY ALONZO RHODES

Meadowbrook Towncenter While planning for current demographic trends in South Salt Lake that are indicating rapid growth in local minority populations, the three main goals for this design were to establish a neighborhood that is vibrant, equitable, and accessible. This project was a collaborative effort completed by Alonzo Rhodes, Kendal Crockett, Nelson Champion and Ash Mayberry.

Spomenik Rudolfu Maistru

Located directly adjacent to the Ljubljana train station, the main attraction to this pocket park is the Rudolf Maister Monument. This sculpture honors the Slovene General Rudolf Maister, and was erected in gratitude for his merits in the fight for the northern border 1918. Adult passersby’s, children, and people waiting for their trains often use this as a resting and play space. To enhance this city node of interest a grass amphitheater was a great proposal that could act as that calmer area near the apartment complex to the east of the site while still inviting site visitors.

TEAM MASTER PLAN

Arheološki Park Marof This proposed Archeological Park in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, offered an exciting opportunity to seek design solutions to attract incoming tourists. The hill overlooking the town, or ‘Marof’ as it is named by locals, is known for its artifacts dating back to the Iron Age. They are highly significant due to representing a time period known to be the pinnacle of European and Slovenian archaeology. The design sought to address how to accommodate tourists with entertainment and lodging, open space, as well as indoor and outdoor educational activity. This project was a collaborative effort completed by Urška Eler, Petra Pečan, Živa Pečenko, Tom Pogačar, and Ash Mayberry. TEAM RENDER

The Utah Real Estate Challenge An intercollegiate real estate development competition that involved preparing and presenting a real estate development plan to a panel of expert judges. The project included the design and economic projection of a multi-use, midrise building proposed in downtown Salt Lake City.

The site is a prime location for office buildings due to its proximity to transportation, and the Central Business Dis¬trict (CBD). People using this office space have a variety of ways to travel. The site is just off the freeway, a few blocks from several Trax light rail stations. It is zoned as part of the CBD (D-1) intended to encourage walkability through inviting streetscape and continuous social and economic engage¬ments. Skyline Corporate Center would make a great office space for law firms. More office space was leased than built during the year 2016. Last year, 439,611 sf of office space was completed and came to market, while 455,606 sf of office space was leased. Demand for office space remains strong within the CBD. Currently, the CBD has 13.8 million sq. ft. of office space. The vacancy rate is 8.9%, a little higher than last years 8.7%. Skyline corporate center will continue to sup¬port growth in Salt Lake City’s CBD and surrounding areas by creating more office space for employers. Utah offers several advantages to businesses including tax benefits and a skilled work force. Great minds from the Uni¬versity of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah Valley University are attractive to companies for their education and technical skills. In addition, Utah has the second fastest growing population in the nation

Since the site is surrounded by other functioning commer¬cial properties, utilities should be available. Though the group did not survey the land or do a soil test, it seems that the soil is likely useable for office space. The site is fairly flat and do not anticipate any uncommon or project issues with the soil.

These construction details were a part of the Temple Barn Community Center project. The Temple Barn is located within close to proximity the iconic Logan temple, the Logan Canyon Overlook, and Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The planting plan was created with Land f/x and the contruction details were created using AutoCAD.

USU Facilities Landscape Design Internship This internship was an exciting opportunity to redesign planting plans around campus with USU’s Landscape Maintenance Manager. Spots redesigned include several pocket and neglected areas, significant entrance locations, and enhancement of iconic areas of the University such as Old Main Hill.

Personal Sketches Having a passion for capturing detail, sketching is a hobby I enjoy in studio or on the road. The professors I had in both countries I’ve studied have influenced me to try different methods of expressing form. This has been incredibly essential to growth during my artistic journey.
