KAYLANA LAKEFRONT DEVELOPMENT
1.1 WHAT IS WATERFRONTIn general, a waterfront is the zone of interaction between urban developments and the water and a waterfront area is considered as a unique and irreplaceable resource. Moreover, the waterfront is characterized as a place integrating land with water and having a natural attraction to people. In fact, the seashore and riverfront are the most attractive water features for human settlement and, in most countries the land in front of water is developed earlier than the inland areas. Waterfront development refers to any development in front of water and a water body a river, lake, ocean, bay, creek or canal.
1.2 TYPES OF WATERFRONT•
Breen & Rigby (1996) assign developed waterfronts into six distinct groups1. commercial waterfronts 2. cultural, educational and environmental waterfronts 3. historic waterfronts 4. recreational waterfronts 5. residential waterfronts and 6. working waterfronts.

1.3 FUNCTION OF A LAKELake has many function such as1. Water 2. Ecology 3.Habitat 4. Recreational 5.Tourism drainage and discharge 6. Agriculture
1.4 AIM •
To Explore, Understand And Develop An Approach Toward Waterfront Of The City.
1.5 OBJECTIVES • To provide a resting space away from the bustle of the city • Know about the parameters of waterfront development • Know about the lakefront activities and the function of lake. • Identify current situation of lake for improve the connection of it with the other tourist destination • Identify the key issues in the design and development of lakefront. • Perceive relation between water and surrounding context. • Create an identity of the city on its waterfront. • How the culture of city will be connected to the lakefront
• To create a socio interactive space for the city
1.6 CONCERN Jodhpur has many places of attraction for tourists and lake kaylana is also one from them. All tourist places have its identity in itself but there is no identity of lake kaylana than other places. • There are lack of such amenities. Current situation is not good of lakefront. • The lakes are very important not only for the purpose of the water supply but also for tourism sector. In order to attract tourists to the lake, infrastructures are required. • So my concern is to develop lake kaylana and provide an identity to it. So people and tourist when come to visit, they can spend more time and get an experience of natural attraction. Ashok Kumar- 201503101710056

2.1 WHAT A place where people come and visit to get expeience of nature. A place which is a fusion of recreational and cultural amenities. To develop the lake Kaylana which is located at Jodhpur city to provide a experiential space to the people of Jodhpur city so they can get an experience of natural attraction. 2.2 WHYMain concern was to provide an identity to Kaylana Lake. To create a link with another tourist place of Jodhpur city. To give a touch of Jodhpur city at its waterfront so people can relate themselves to own culture in the out side area of city. Why people would like to visit if there is noting to do at waterfront. To give such different different activities so every person can spend more time.
2.3 WHEREAt Kaylana Lake which is located about 8 km in the west of Jodhpur city. People of jodhpur city need a public space type natural attraction so they can visit at weekend and spend more time. It will attract to tourist and will help to increase tourism of city. It will give the feel of the culture of entire city. There are some place nearby Kaylana Lake where people of city and tourist come to visit. It will be the best that all places will be connected through every place.

4.1.2 History ▪ The construction of the lake started by sultan muizz-ud-din muhammad shah II in the 15th century. The inscription at the lake mentions that it was completed during the reign of sultan qutb-ud-din ahmad shah II in 1451. According to this inscription, its name is placed as "hauj-e-qutb" (pond of qutb) after him. ▪ The kankaria lake has been an inseparable part of the identity of ahmedabad since its foundation in 1451. Kankaria tank was included in municipal limit in 1884 A.D. ▪ In 1928, Kankaria was declared protected under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act. Ashok Kumar- 201503101710056
23
KAYLANA LAKEFRONT DEVELOPMENT 4.1.3 Purpose Of Development ▪ However, the heavy traffic on the lake side road, disorganized informal activities, haphazard use of the right of way and the lack of sufficient access to the lakefront prevented the complete utilization of all its potentials. ▪ Initiated by the ahmedabad municipal corporation, this project is a comprehensive lakefront precinct set in the heart of the city of ahmedabad, and conceived as a memorable recreational urban space. Its primary objective is to create an efficient and durable infrastructure which would foster entirely new activities in addition to supporting current ones. 4.1.4 Activities

4.1.7 Cultures That Existed At Kankariya And Are Enhanced/Controlled By The Lake Front Development Project –
(i) Culture of celebration Noting down events that take place at kankaria like dushhehra & eid celebrations etc.. Now events like kankaria carnival, navratri and other such events make kankariya as one of the most important cultural centers of the city. (ii) Culture of food Food is generally inherent part of indian culture. A public place like kankariya is no different when it comes to food. It would have started as a need, but definitely developed as a culture that is practiced by many, i.E. Enjoying food at the lake. Ashok Kumar- 201503101710056
25
KAYLANA LAKEFRONT DEVELOPMENT 4.1.8 Cultures That Are Newly Added To Kankariya Lakefront Project – (i) Culture of walkability (pedestrian friendly public space) A complete pedestrian friendly space is difficult to achieve and implement in the current urbanized context of indian cities. This project made a successful attempt towards a complete pedestrian friendly public space. (ii) Culture of public art From wall paintings to stone murals, art has become an inherent culture of this place. Various events that promote this culture also are the living examples of the same. (iii) Culture of recreation and games
Various games for kids like bungee jumping, water riders train ride etc. Has brought in the culture of involving kids in outdoor activities, also allowing kids to interact with various murals showing Gujarat's development in a public place like this. 4.1.9 Context And Opportunity (i) Socio-economic context The Kankariya lakefront is also the site of the annual Kankariya carnival that has been a major success for the last 4 years. The carnival has become one of the most awaited events in ahmedabad and every year there are a wide range of cultural programmes, performances, skits and competitions for people cutting across age groups. In addition to the social gatherings, this place acts as source of daily bread for many, who associate themselves with various activities like vending, hawking, etc. And benefit from those visiting the lake precinct at a daily basis, for various recreational activities related to food, lake, swimming pool, temple, zoo, garden, naginawadi, kids city etc.

KAYLANA LAKEFRONT DEVELOPMENT (ii) Architectural / environmental context Architecture is represented in terms of the public related buildings and open spaces like temple, garden etc. Dutch tombs, summer palace in nagina wadi and historical dadu dayal temple alongwith the sluice are living examples of medieval architecture at kankaria lake front. Naginawadi and zoo area along with the lake precinct form a garland of green area. A very distinct step was taken by the amc by starting census of planted trees.

SITE LOCATION
Total site area - 52,358 sq. M.
➢ To preserve existing platform On site there is a platform that was using before but right now it is not using and also has been destroyed. So idea is to convert this platform as a “FLOATING DECK” and make it usable again. A full lake can be seen from this place. Ashok Kumar- 201503101710056

➢ Massing on site Idea behind massing on site is to make a connectivity between contour and building. Spaces are also facing lake so there can be a direct visual connectivity to lake.
