Long-Lost Watercolors of '1001 Nights' Bring New Life to Age-Old Tales

In the early 20th century, artists experimented with color and less realistic dimensions, and mixed the worlds of Eastern and Western mythologies. Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen, working in Europe during World War I, finished his own evocative version of A Thousand and One Nights. His mysticism-tinted take on the Arabian stories pushed visual storytelling to new heights.

But the illustrations were never published, and the watercolor images remained tucked away for more than 40 years. They were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen's death in 1957 and sat unused for another 60 — until now.

Nielsen filled his illustrations with expressionist, nearly surrealist characters and whimsical landscapes, breaking the boundaries of what visual storytelling was supposed to look like. His use of bright reds and deep blues, of golden leaves and detailed floral elements, hinted at a mix of Asian folklore and Arab iconography, make of his work a revolutionary body of visual art.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nielsen's work, Taschen published all 21 of his original illustrations, reproduced directly from the neverbefore-seen original watercolors. The extra-large coffee table book delivers an experience of its own — the prints are meticulously curated and presented in a blue velvet box, as if the book itself was a tale to unveil. NPR's Laura Beltran Villamizar talked to Noël Daniel, the editor of the book, about the watercolor illustrations and the birth of the special book.

This artwork was always intended by the artist to be part of a book. We had a dilemma: Do we take these 21 originals and recreate the original book of 1001 Nights tales that Nielsen was working on back in 1919? The original text was a long Danish translation of the 1001 Nights tales.

The images would have been dwarfed by the scope of the manuscript, and there are many excellent translations already on the market. Instead, we decided to highlight the artwork itself by making prints in 5 colors (including gold) at a size that would best approximate the originals. We wanted to bring the originals to life in the size that Kay Nielsen would have painted them. This has never been done before with Kay Nielsen's work, as originals of his work are so rare. We wanted to deliver the experience of the originals in a little portable mini-gallery: our oversized box with the prints and book within.

The publishing houses often worked hand–in– hand with London's powerful art galleries, and they would often time the release of a book with an exhibition of the originals.

Kay Nielsen was a devoted illustrator of books, and was one of the early 20th-century's most famous and beloved book illustrators. He worked London — the seat of some of the mightiest publishing houses in the world at the time.

Artists' livelihoods depended on the eventual sale of the original artworks in London's art galleries to collectors. It sends shudders down my spine to think of all the incredible complete sets of original book illustrations that were sold in this manner, and thereby immediately dispersed privately. In many cases, the artworks' whereabouts have been lost.

The book mirrors the colors that Nielsen used in his art: the rich, twilight-blue velvet-like material used for the cover, and the bright red envelope that holds the prints. Can you tell me a bit about the design of the book?

With regards to Nielsen's 1001 Nights book that never was published, we do not know exactly how large these images were going to be reproduced because the book never happened due to World War I. We assume that these images would have likely not been reproduced larger than 7 or 8 inches square. This was due to the great expense of publishing illustrated books in color at the time. We wanted to create a portfolio of art prints in their original size, about 16.5 by 16.5 inches, and deliver this to readers to hang on their own walls at home if they desired.

We wanted the box to be like a treasure box, with the prints carefully wrapped inside, but also a book with more essays about the work to augment the history and production of Nielsen's only surviving complete set of artworks. Nielsen kept these artworks in a wooden box for decades; they travelled with him halfway around the world from London to Los Angeles when he came to work for Disney in the 1930s. They were recovered in the 1950s by devoted neighbors after he and his wife died, when the entire contents of their home were dispersed in an estate sale.

The prints have been on the move for a long time. We wanted to create a new home for them that paid homage to their plight while also celebrated them.

Oui, Patrie, ma vraie poésie ! Tu es ma totale bénédiction. Tu es mon tout, tout ce qui fut, tout ce qui est. Tu es l’étendard de mes espoirs. Les millénaires dissimulent la fureur ennemie, Même de nos jours, ils sont heureux de te lapider, Mais les pierres de tes montagnes, les pierres de ta terre sont une bénédiction pour toi ! Avec elles tu construiras des maisons, en dépit de sa haine, Je suis ton bouclier, ô patrie, qui te garde des malheurs, Et Toi, Toi ; Tu es la somme de mes années heureuses. Mais il y a des pierres qui laissent des cicatrices, Je recouds ces blessures avec les fils de mon âme, Je te remets sur pieds, je te bénis Parce que nulle part ailleurs que dans mon âme flamboient Les fleurs de tes jardins, qu’on appelle bonheur ! One day, a beautiful Persian princess, Scheherazade heard about the King. She said she wanted to spend the night with him. Her father strongly disagreed, but Sheherezade didn't listen. She met the King and spent the whole night telling the story. At the end of the night, she interrupted her story in an exciting moment. The King wanted to hear the end of the story, but Scheherazade said he would have to wait until the following night to hear the rest.

"He is mine!" said the Waste Bin to the Basket and added gently, "Don't you know that a half of his potatoes is already rotten?" The Flower Basket dragged herself along, holding back her tears. Toward her walked a Case of Beer and a Case of Whiskey. They noticed her and began to chase her. The poor Basket dashed away crying out, "Help! Help!" The brave Sack of Potatoes jumped from around the corner, attacked the Cases and thrashed them soundly. The Flowers rejoiced; the Basket was happy. Both angry Cases went to a large trash container... And nearby, in that very Waste Bin, there was what’s left of the Sack of Potatoes...

A strange dream I saw one night I entered a door that opened into a book titled, "The Arabian Nights" The sand on the pages and the heat intense Made me feel dizzy and somewhat tense A beautiful woman guided me to a palace picture heavily guarded by the guards And I soon realised that she was the fictional Scheherazade She introduced me to different characters in her room Surprisingly it was a Genie sweeping her room with a broom. She called on Ali Baba to show me his treasure I looked at the treasure that could not be measured Sinbad was preparing for adventures again Aladdin was driving Yasmine insane I felt glad to meet the Arabian Nights ‘ characters And above all the beautiful fictional narrator I enjoyed the hospitality of Scheherazade But I also wanted to come back to my world So I opened my eyes breaking the spell And there is just one thing that I want to tell That as you read these stories, please do pay heed As good Literature can cure evils like lust and greed .

Ljubica Katic was born in 1957 in Nikšid, Montenegro, where she had lived and worked until 2008, when she came to Split and stayed there. Since early childhood she has been writing first childrens' poems published in childrens' magazines, later love, social, spiritual, and haiku poetry. She has been awarded many times, in her own country as well as abroad. Her poems have been translated into English, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Romani, Bengali, Hindi. She is represented in many international joint anthologies around the world. Nigar Arif was born in 1993 on the 20th of January in Azerbaijan. She studied at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University in the English faculty in 2010- 2014 and graduated from “III Youth Writers’ School” in “Azerbaijan Writers’ Union” in 2016- 2017. Olga Levadnaya is a Russian poet renowned in the world, she was awarded titles of the Honored Worker of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan in 2008 and laureate of the State prize named after Gavriil Derzhavin in 2007, State prize named after Sajida Suleymanova in 2015. She was nominated for the “International Peace Award”. Olga is a member of the Writers Union of the Republic of Tatarstan, Writers Union of the Russian Federation and International Writers Union. She is the Art Director of the Kazan poetic theatre "Dialogue".
