Welcome to our club Good evening and welcome to Profiles Park for this North West Counties Division One North game against St Helens Town. Obviously we have not had the start that we had hoped for, but to be fair when the fixtures came out I did think our first three were harsh, ha. Lower Breck despite losing a couple of players are still the stand out favourites for our division and Pilkington have added some very good experienced counties players to an already very good squad. Added in the middle of that too, we could have played a very strong Prestwich side but the weather sorted that out. We have built a very, very good squad over pre season, and I honestly think its possibly the strongest that I have seen here in my time but obviously it takes a little period to gel, add to that the uncertainty with covid, and it has been a huge battle to keep everything in line at a football club. Onwards to tonight and St Helens Town and an opportunity to kick start our season, however of course it won't be easy. Having moved to St Helens over two years ago I keep close tabs on all. Town always have their fair share of ex Ashton players and this season they have added some real quality in Colin Quirk and Ashley Stott. Hopefully tonight won't be our last for a while, I am personally sick of the sight of Boris and the fear of every morning

wondering whether football and/ or that my pub will be operating as normal, or have more restrictions put on. On that note of course I wish that you all enjoy tonightâ€&#x;s game, but please be mindful of the rules of social distancing, masks, no more than groups of six etc etc. Us as volunteers are under immense pressure to keep football and our sanity alive at the moment, so the more you comply, the more we can have and enjoy the beautiful game back in our lives. Onwards and upwards as always. Mark Club Chairman

Match reportv PILKINGTON FC 10/10/20 Last Saturday, the 10th of October, we hosted our first Home game of the new season which was another local derby game against our near neighbours, and this evening‟s opponents groundshare partners, Pilkington FC. Pilkington FC had built a good squad during the longer than usual preseason, bringing in the likes of striker Adam Gilchrist and experienced, ex town, defender Antony Shinks to bolster their already strong squad from last season, so we knew that a tough test was awaiting Glynn Hurst‟s young squad. The game didn‟t get off to too good a start for Town, with keeper Ben Purdham being on the wrong end of a heavy collision after just two minutes which requirement treatment from new club physio Adam Young. Shortly afterwards, on 7 minutes, Pilkington took the lead, when keeper Purdham dropped a cross, which would normally be an easy take for him, and the visitors capitalised with the first goal of the game. Our young team rallied though and fought their way back into the game with an equalising goal coming after 27 minutes from debutant Khius Metz. That goal proved to be a catalyst for the visitors though who clearly finished the first half in the ascendency and took a 2-1 lead just prior to the interval in the 42nd minute of the game.

The half time break saw manager Hurst making a couple of changes with Harry Nevitt coming on for his first game of the season in place of Tyreek McCallum and Dave Moore replacing Kieran Alley on the right side of our front three. Pilkington were unlucky not to extend their lead after 49 minutes though with a very tight offside call ruling out what would have been a third goal for the visitors. After 69 minutes keeper Purdham made amends for his earlier mistake with a fantastic triple save to keep the deficit to one goal and keep Town in the game. Following his introduction to the game, Harry Nevitt was causing the visitors all sorts of problems that they just couldn‟t handle. Consequently, in the 77th minute as Ashton were coming back into the game, the visiting Goalkeeper, Scott, raced 15 yards out of his penalty area to cynically scythe down Nevitt and take a yellow card for the team. If the cynical crunching challenge itself wasn‟t bad enough, Pilkington then extended their lead to 3-1 a minute later, giving Town a mountain to climb going into the final ten minutes of the game. The lads continued to battle though and in the 89th minute thought they had pulled a goal back, but Dave Moor‟s effort was ruled out by the assistant referee‟s flag indicating offside. So the game finished 3-1 to the visitors, a wake up call perhaps for our young side, but with some positives to take from the performances of substitutes Dave Moore and Harry Nevitt together with strong performances from captain Carl Lownsbrough, Chris Hill and Dylan Makin together with a debut goal too for Khius Metz in front of a promising first home crowd of the season, numbering 128. #UpTheTown

MANAGERS NOTES Good Evening and welcome to Proflles Park for this evenings game against our local rivals St Helens Town. We hope you enjoy the game and we wish you well for the season ahead. Following on from Saturday against big spending Pilkington we need to improve all aspects of our individual and collective game. The 1st half we did well and could and should have been ahead in the game with really poor errors costing us and giving us a mountain to climb we need to eradicate that from our game to give us

the

chance

best

possible

of

winning

games against the best teams in the division currently we are not doing that and itâ€&#x;s my responsibility to make sure we start to do it and we will. Looking ahead to tonightâ€&#x;s game we need to be fully committed to the task ahead against a much improved St Helens Town squad who will fancy their chances against us in our current form. We will be giving our everything to make sure we register our first 3 points as we look to start and climb the table. Keep Believing. Glynn

In an attempt to increase interest in the club, Brentford gave free admission to everyone who attended their Second Division match against Peterborough United on Saturday October 13th, 2001. The 11,097 crowd, who would have paid about ÂŁ70,000 if they had all been charged for entrance, was about twice the size of the previous home gate but sadly was also twice the size of their next game at Griffin Park. It was a season of nearly but not quite for Brentford finishing one point short of automatic promotion and then being beaten by Stoke in the Play Off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Tofiq Bahramov will always be remembered with affection by England fans, he was the linesman who helped get awarded the controversial England third goal in the 1966 World Cup final. When his native Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union their national stadium was renamed in his honour complete with a statue erected outside. England visited the stadium for the first time on this day in 2004 for a World Cup qualifier with captain Michael Owen scoring the only goal of the match.

Who’s played at edge green st Bryan Robson was born on 11th January 1957 in Chester-Le-Street, County Durham, he began his career with West Bromwich Albion in 1972 before moving to Manchester United in 1981, where he became the longest serving captain in the club's history and won three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup. He also won two Premier League winners' medals. In August 2011, Robson was voted as the greatest ever Manchester United player in a poll of the club's former players as part of a new book released to celebrate their 19th league title win. Robson represented England on 90 occasions between 1980 and 1991, making him, at the time, the fifth most capped England player. His goal scoring tally of 26 placed him eighth on the list at the time. Robson captained his country 65 times, with only Bobby Moore and Billy Wright having captained England on more occasions. Robson is also known by the nicknames "Robbo" and "Captain Marvel". Bobby Robson stated that Robson was, along with Alan Shearer and Kevin Beattie, the best British player he ever worked with. Robson began his management career as a player-manager with Middlesbrough in 1994, retiring from playing in 1997. In seven years as Middlesbrough manager, he guided them to three Wembley finals, which were all lost, and earned them promotion to the Premier League on two occasions. Between 1994 and 1996, he also served as assistant coach to England manager Terry Venables, which included Euro 96. He later returned to West Bromwich Albion for two years as manager, helping them become the first top division team in 14 years to avoid

relegation after being bottom of the league table on Christmas Day. Less successful have been his short-lived spells as manager of Bradford City and Sheffield United, the former lasting barely six months and ending in relegation from what is now the EFL Championship, and the latter lasting less than a year and seeing his expensively-assembled side fail to challenge for promotion to the Premier League. On 23rd September 2009, Robson was appointed manager of the Thailand national team. He resigned on 8th June 2011. On 1st July 2011, Robson was appointed "Global Ambassador" at Manchester United In May 2019 Ashton Town Chairman, Mark Hayes, pulled off a major coup in getting Bryan Robson to agree to captain a Manchester United legends team against the Joseph‟s Goal Latics Legends team here at Edge Green Street on Saturday 25th May. Robson‟s appearance ensured that a near 2000 capacity crowd crammed into Edge Green Street to watch the game which ended in a one all draw with the Latics Legends eventually running out winners on the day following a penalty shoot out to decide the tie.

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until

1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by noone, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy

Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare, Joanne and more recently, Keith whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto ...... „Onwards & Upwards‟, sums us up as we now strive for promotion.
