Welcome
to our club Good afternoon and welcome to Profiles Park for this North West Counties North tie against South Liverpool. The season really is now on the final straight now, but what‟s great is that it's soon to be shaken up with a couple of cup competitions for the first team, to add to the excellent progression to the latter rounds for the Ladies and U18s.
the first team, filled with many needing game time to be fair, and the result was a learning curve for those wanting to progress. Notes from the MANAGER Good afternoon and thanks for your support once again. Well last week was a disappointing result. We started the game with the wrong attitude and a total lack of respect for Garstang‟s recent run of good form so we quickly paid the price. We didn‟t get going at all and it was a very poor first half. After a good discussion at half time the lads realised that they had let themselves down during the first half and had dropped our previous high standards. The second half was much improved and we got back to basics and the boys started to play how we expect them to. It was a good 45 by are lads but an even better 45 by the Garstang keeper to whom the visitors should be indebted as they hung on to a deserved win. After recent performances this was a short sharp reality check and we will be looking for a big reaction from the team this afternoon. South Liverpool are a team I know well from my time in the West Cheshire League with Helsby, me and Mart have had a good few battles over the years so I‟m expecting nothing different today.
He has done a fantastic job at the club and deserves a lot of credit for the work he has done with South and also the length of time he has been in charge I have nothing but respect for him. He has them well organised and they like to play footy so it‟s set up to be a cracker. We are both in similar positions in the league table so it
has all the ingredients for a good one for the fans. We have to learn from our errors last week and react well today, hopefully getting a positive result. Thanks again for your support,

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN a Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted to Div 1 in their 1st season. However, quickly relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16th. Towards the end of 1910/11 season the club withdrew from the league and fixtures were taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League. They played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958.
The founder was a persistent man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road due to land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in
Bryn until 1964 when the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street which was previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers.
This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt. Then in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built.

The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league ever since with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett R.I.P 5/5/20 (right pic far right) and Jimmy Cahill (pic below far right). So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive.

Our motto ...... „Onwards & Upwards‟, sums us up as we now strive for promotion.
HISTORY OF sout Although the name of South Liverpool FC first came about in the late 19th century the clubs that bore that name until 1921 had no connection with the current club although enjoying good success before the First World War.
The current club was founded in April 1935 to respond to the increasing South end population and began playing in the 1935/36 season in the Lancashire Combination at Holly Park. Success was immediate and by the outbreak of the Second World War the Lancashire
Combination had been won three times in succession as had the Lancashire Challenge Trophy and most impressively South defeated Cardiff City 2-1 in the Welsh Cup final at Wrexham in 1939.
The resumption of football after the war saw South in the Cheshire League but it was never to bear the success of the pre war years. South went back to the Lancashire Combination in 1952. The mid sixties saw success under manager Alan Hampson sufficient to qualify by right for the Northern Premier League. South would always struggle against wealthier, well supported clubs at this standard. In 1983/84 South enjoyed their best post war season under first John King & George Rooney then Brian Griffiths as they annexed the NPL League Cup, the Lancashire Challenge Trophy and the Liverpool Senior

Cup. South‟s success was not built upon and while two more Liverpool Senior Cup wins followed along with the NPL Presidents Cup, Holly Park was lost in 1989 and the limited company was liquidated in 1991. Holly Park was later converted to the impressive Liverpool South Parkway station. South supporters had already formed a committee to take over the football club and in 1992 were in the Liverpool County Combination. A nomadic home was then South‟s main issue but at the dawn of the Millennium secured its home at the North Field, Jericho Lane, Otterspool. South were consistent top half finishers in the Liverpool Combination / Liverpool County FA Premier League and won the George Mahon Cup at Goodison Park in May 2009. In 2011 South took the decision to switch to the West Cheshire League and immediately won two consecutive divisional titles to be in the top division in 2014. The First Division was won

in 2015, retained in 2016 when two cups were added, making it a triple winning season. 2019 saw South‟s home ground move 200 yards to the Jericho Hub where the stadium pitch has been fitted with floodlights, cover and stand. After the cancellation of the 2019/20 season South stepped up and took the league title in 2021, achieving promotion to the North West Counties League for 2021/22, thirty years after our semi pro status had been lost. South‟s reserves will continue to play in division two of the West Cheshire League. The club boast a third adult team and four Vets sides. Our senior youth team (Under 18) operate in the West Cheshire League Youth Division. The club‟s youth set up has teams in the Liverpool Premier Junior Leagues, Belle Vale Junior and Merseyside & Halewood, making the club one of the biggest in the City. South boast a number of well-known ex players including Jimmy Case and John Aldridge who both started their careers at South. Manager Martin Ryman has been at the helm of the club since 2001 and is South‟s longest ever serving manager and also played for South between 1992 and 2000. His assistant is Stephen Ward who made 427 first team appearances in goal for South, a club record along with coach David Cringle.
Who’s played at edge green st Howard Anthony Gayle was born on 18th May 1958. He is a former English footballer who played for Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Halifax Town, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Stoke City. Gayle was born in Toxteth and joined the youth ranks at local side Liverpool in 1974. He signed a professional contract with the club in 1977 becoming the first black player to play for Liverpool which was seen as a 'victory' for the black community in Liverpool. His finest hour for Liverpool came in the 1980–81 European Cup semi-final second leg away at Bayern Munich and he was rewarded with a winners medal at the end of that season, as a non-playing substitute in the final. After loan spells at Fulham and Newcastle United he left Anfield after making just five appearances and joined Birmingham City in search of
regular first team football. He then played for Sunderland and had a short spell in the United States playing indoor football with the Dallas Sidekicks. He later returned to England and played for Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers and ended his career with Halifax Town. In August 2016, it was reported that Gayle had turned down a nomination for an MBE for his work with "Show Racism the Red Card", saying it would be "a betrayal to all of the Africans who have lost their lives, or who have suffered as a result of the British Empire. He released his autobiography in October 2016 titled „61 Minutes In Munich‟. In his autobiography, he alleged that veteran Liverpool teammate Tommy Smith was frequently racist towards him. Howard Gayle appeared here at Edge Green Street in May 2019 turning out for a celebrity team against the England Deaf Football Team in a fundraising game ahead of their forthcoming European Championship Finals appearance.

FOOTBALL BOOK REVIEW In April 1981, Howard Gayle was summoned from the substitutes' bench and sent on to play for Liverpool in the second leg of a European Cup semi-final at German champions Bayern Munich. The previous October, by filling the same role at Manchester City, he became the first black footballer in Liverpool's 89-year history to play at first team level. Gayle's Liverpool career proved to be short. He would pull on the red shirt only five times in total, scoring once. Yet he is remembered as a trailblazer. In his book '61 Minutes in Munich', Gayle takes you inside his life: bringing the shutters down on a childhood spent between Toxteth and Norris Green, two contrasting areas of Liverpool. He details life on the streets, the racism, the other forms of abuse, of which he had only told a handful of people prior to releasing his book and his ascent from teenage football hooligan to a player with one of Europe's leading clubs. Howard Gayle explains what it was like to be a black man with a sense of insecurity
inside a Liverpool dressing room at one of the most successful points in the club's history, a place where only the strongest survived. In Munich, Howard Gayle ran Bayern Munich's defenders ragged and is credited by many as the catalyst for Liverpool's progression to the final. And yet, by being substituted after 61 minutes on the pitch, he reveals his dismay at never being trusted to keep his cool in the dying moments of the game played in Munch as the pressure and temperature of the game grew. Gayle goes on to take you to Newcastle, to Birmingham City, to Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers. He also takes you back his modest home in the south end of Liverpool where it all began. Part social-history, partautobiography, '61 Minutes in Munich' is an exposition of life in the city of Liverpool during one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Above all it examines how a pioneer like Howard Gayle has been up against it from the moment he was born.

ASHTON TOWN AFC V g Ashton went into this game full of confidence following the very convincing home win over Bacup Borough the previous Saturday. That said the boys started the game slowly and some poor defending saw them fall behind after only two minutes of the game gone. The early goal seemed to inspire the visitors, who immediately pressed forwards again and could of extended their lead almost immediately but for some great defending from captain Alex Noonan who made two headed clearances in the space of just over a minute. John Edgerton had Town‟s first chance of the game, shooting over the Garstang cross bar after four minutes of play. The heavy pitch made it difficult for both sets of players and was most notable as Tom Parry delivered a fantastic cross to Alex Noonan who slipped at the crucial moment and was unable to connect with Parry‟s cross. Garstang however adapted to the conditions better and although limited to hopeful shots from range for most of the first half, they continued to dominate throughout the first period. After 30 minutes as everyone expected a free kick to be awarded to Ashton following what appeared to be an unfair challenge on Leon Wright the referee allowed play to continue and Garstang broke forwards winning themselves a corner kick. The visitors quickly took a short corner and as they advanced into Town‟s penalty area a rash challenge from Tom Parry saw them awarded a penalty kick from which they duly extended their lead to two goals. The score then remained at 2-0 until the half time interval. Ashton started the second half strongest and John Edgerton was denied early on by a

garstang fc 22/1/22 fantastic save from the visiting goalkeeper. With Tyler Magee‟s pace causing Garstang numerous problems further chances fell to Mo Malumo, who pulled his shot wide and Noah Robson who was denied again by the visiting goalkeeper. Chances continued to come Ashton‟s way as they dominated the second period with Chris Hill being denied by the Garstang keeper again and further chances for Mo Malumo and Leon Wright dashing high and wide of the visitors goal. After 80 minutes Town finally clawed a goal back, Chris Hill breaking forward from deep in his own half playing a one two with Jack Richards before playing the ball out wide on the right to John Edgerton and continuing his run upfield Hilly received the ball back from Edgey and struck an unstoppable shot past the visiting keeper. Town continued then to pile pressure on the visitors goal but to no avail with Garstang holding out for a 2-1 victory on the day which could well have been a different story had Town applied themselves earlier particularly during the first half of the game.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY Joseph‟s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, ran by a small group of family and friends who all volunteer their services. The charity has received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. Joseph‟s Goal have raised most of their funds through charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. Ashton Town AFC now host an annual charity legends football match, after the huge success of the inaugural match in May 2015, with the Latics Legends thumping a Hollyoaks XI 10-0 with a sensational performance. Town chairman, Mark Hayes was touched by Joe‟s story and has been actively involved in the charity‟s fundraising efforts for several years. This years event is the fifth annual Joseph‟s Goal legends game and is set to be another classic with the likes of Bryan Robson, Emmerson Boyce and Arjan De Zeeuw gracing the Ashton Town turf. Since Josephs story was shared publicly, the 10-year-old has become a little star in the local area and recognised throughout the United Kingdom for his fantastic story in defying
