WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Good Evening, and welcome to all to this Hallmark Security North West Counties First Division North game against Prestwich Heys. Its an absolute honour to be back involved with the North West Counties, and something the whole club is buzzing about. I really didnâ€&#x;t think that we would get relegated, and it really did hit me hard as a Chairman as ultimately that relegation sits with you, and something that had never happened to the club before. However I am not just saying this, but I truly think we have, and we will come back stronger. To put our relegation into context an ex pro really had to drill it into me that sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards, and I really think we have done that. We appointed a young hungry manager in Dave Dempsey, and he has built an absolutely fantastic team around him. He really has done an amazing job. His backroom staff include Lee Bignall whom was ex Helsby manager for years, Lee Thompson whom has played the game at great non league levels, and Michael Smith who came from Warrington Town when their reserves folded. The Cheshire League was quality and we regrouped well, but it took time. We actually only started pre season last term with just 2 original Town players from the relegation season, and from that, now only one player remains. We certainly are not returning to just make up the numbers, and we look forward to both catching up with old friends, and meeting new, with the host of new clubs that have come up with us. Prestwich will be a very tough task as they finished 3rd last term, and are surely one of the favourites this season. However after our defeat on Saturday we must react, and luckily with games coming thick and fast at this stage of the season it gives us a quick opportunity to right our wrongs. Onwards and upwards as always. Mark - Club Chairman 3

HALLMARK SECURITY WEEKEND ROUND UP - SAT A new-look Hallmark Security League began with a bang as nets rustled across the North West in the Premier Division and the First Division North and South. 17 clubs made their first appearance at this level, whilst three returned after spells away. Perhaps the most eye-catching result of the afternoon came in the top tier as City of Liverpool triumphed 6-3 at 1874 Northwich to lead the table at this early stage. Prolific marksman Craig Cairns netted a hat-trick on his debut for the Purps. Cairns‟ former club Runcorn Town are joint-top after recording an excellent 5-2 win at Padiham. Goals from five different scorers had built the visitors a five-goal cushion before the Storks netted a couple of consolations. Northwich Victoria also travelled home happy after seeing off West Didsbury & Chorlton 5-3, whilst a double from last year‟s top scorer Carl Grimshaw saw Charnock Richard beat Barnoldswick Town 2-0. Hanley Town and Congleton Town were the other two sides who began with three points: Josh Thorpe‟s brace saw the former win 2-1 at Burscough, and Emini Adegbenro struck for the latter to edge out newly promoted Litherland REMYCA. Silsden and Whitchurch Alport were the other two sides who climbed from the First Division last season, and both scored late equalisers to rescue a 1-1 draw on opening day: Danny Forrest for the Cobbydalers against Squires Gate, and Alex Hughes for Alport against Ashton Athletic. Abbey Hey came from 2-0 behind to earn a share of the spoils at home to Winsford United, and the only goalless game came at the TDP Solicitors Stadium, where Irlam picked up a very respectable point from their trip to Bootle. The first ever Division One North table is headed by new boys Avro, who hammered Ashton Town 5-0 on their return to the Hallmark Security League after a one year absence. Carlisle City also got off to a flier with a fine 3-0 victory at Atherton LR, and sitting below them are Longridge Town, who picked up where they left off after promotion as they won a thrilling contest with AFC Liverpool 5-3. The visitors were relegated from the Premier Division last season, and although they led 2-0 in this one, it couldn‟t prevent them from suffering an early setback. Jay Hart bagged a decisive two goals for the home team. AFC Darwen also dropped from the Premier Division, but they hit the ground running with a 3-1 win at newly promoted Shelley. Adam Heaney struck the first and the last goal of this clash for Darwen. Two other sides had debuts to remember at this level: Alan Coar netted twice to help Garstang beat Daisy Hill 2-0, and Andrew Briggs‟ goal midway through the second half was enough for Steeton to win 2-1 at Holker Old Boys. St Helens Town were 2-1 winners at Lower Breck in one of the day‟s standout results as quick-fire goals from Liam Dodd and Liam Diggle turned the match on its head at Anfield Sports Community Centre. Nelson and Prestwich Heys also kick-started their campaigns with three points as they grabbed the only goal in respective contests against Chadderton and Bacup Borough. The division‟s sole draw was a goalless one between AFC Blackpool and newcomers Cleator Moor Celtic. 14

EKEND ROUND UP - SATURDAY 4TH AUGUST 2018

Newly-promoted Rylands sit at the summit in the First Division South after an eyecatching win at Ellesmere Rangers, who were competing in the Hallmark Security League for the first time after being laterally transferred from the West Midlands Regional League (WMRL) Premier Division. Player/joint-manager Stuart Wellstead struck three times for the visitors and Gary Kenny twice. Vauxhall Motors enjoyed a perfect return to this level of football with an impressive 4-1 victory at New Mills, courtesy of a Ben Holmes brace and one each for Danny Cross and Greg Drummond. Cheadle Heath Nomads are also riding high in the early standings after making the step up as they beat Stockport Town 2-0 – a scoreline matched by their neighbours Cheadle Town thanks to two late goals at home to Wythenshawe Amateurs. Beaten play-off semi-finalists Sandbach United went down 2-0 at FC Oswestry Town – a great three points for the hosts now under the management of Matt Burton. Abbey Hulton United began their second term in the league with a 2-1 away victory at the returning Stone Dominoes – Kieran Lazenby‟s brace the difference – whilst Eccleshall picked up the same result at Maine Road, who only dropped from the Premier Division last season. Reece White‟s late goal settled this one for the Eagles. There was no relegation hangover for Barnton, who overcame St Martins 1-0 thanks to Steven Warburton‟s second half strike, and it was a winning start to life at this level for Wythenshawe Town; Liam Crellin-Myers grabbed the only goal with eight minutes to spare against Alsager Town. And last but not least, losing play-off finalists Cammell Laird 1907 drew 3-3 with Stone Old Alleynians, who transferred from the WMRL. It was an emotional day at Kirklands as Lairds paid tribute to loyal supporter Jimmy Hyland after the sad news of his passing, and although Phil Burton‟s rebuilt side led 2-0 and 3-1, a late header from Jack Tomlinson for the away team made it honours even. It was nice to get back underway and begin nine months of thrills and spills, and many sides now have midweek fixtures to continue building momentum or to show some “bouncebackability”!

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and are still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith (Kitman/Physio) whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 20

HISTORY OF PRESTWICH HEYS AFC The origins of Prestwich Heys A.F.C. can be traced back to February 9th, 1938 when a meeting was called at the Music Room of the Heys Road Boys School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an Old Boys Association. Attending that first meeting were messers Bridge, Stott, Foster, Taplin and Alan Proctor Bell, who was to become a central figure in the Club's history and whose progress he was to report on in the Prestwich Guide under the guise of 'Touchliner'. Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the Association flourished under the Chairmanship of Bell, who also acted as Secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys AFC and was acknowledged as one of the region's best. The team went on to win its first honours in 1943 in the Prestwich and Whitefield League with the Woodward Shield - a success which was repeated for the next three seasons. The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and in to the South East Lancashire League claiming Championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmour in the sixties, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970/71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaws. The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nationâ€&#x;s top amateur clubs. Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic, Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the clubs best run taking Heys to the last 16. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup. These were heady days but with the seventies came the onslaught of professionalism and the club struggled to maintain its winning ways. After claiming the Manchester Amateur Cup in 1972, the trophy cabinet remained bare as Heys negotiated the gradual restructuring of semi-professional football, moving from the Cheshire County League in to the newly formed North West Counties League in 1982. Ground grading problems saw the club drop in to the Manchester Football League in 1986 but the club went on to gain its first trophy for over a decade when the First Division title was claimed in 1988. 1991 saw Heys relocate from their Grimshaws home on Heys Road for a new base at Sandgate Road, just over the border in Whitefield. After relegation in 1996, the club bounced back with the Manchester League double of First Division Championship and Murray Shield built on the back of a record 19 league wins from the start of the season. After finishing runners-up to champions Royton Town in the 2003/04 season, the 2004/05 season saw Heys finally take the major prize of their first Manchester League Premier Division title. They followed this up by retaining their crown the following season with a 2-0 victory in their penultimate game of the season at Hindsford. In 2006/07, Heys made it a hat-trick of Premier Division titles and also lifted the Goldline Trophy after defeating Charnock Richard on penalties at the Reebok Stadium. 21

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY The Joseph’s Goal charity was set up in October 2012, by Paul and Emma Kendrick, to raise funds for research into NKH, (Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia), the life-limiting genetic condition that their son, Joseph, was born with. NKH is caused by an excess of glycine on the brain. Joseph was given five days to live but reached his ninth birthday in May this year. He is severely disabled and suffers from seizures. But he is resilient and is a fighter, and we, in turn, are fighting to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for NKH, which is very rare, with only fifteen children still surviving in the UK, and less than five hundred worldwide. Joseph’s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, run by a small group of family and friends, who all volunteer their services. No-one is paid. We have received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. In four years we have raised over £340,000, largely from charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. The funds raised have been sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. Both have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph’s Goal, and trustees of Joseph’s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is, at last, some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. Since Joseph’s Goal began, Joe has become a little celebrity locally: - in 2013, he was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by the captain, Emmerson Boyce, which resulted in television appearances on BBC NW, Granada, and Sky News; - in 2013, Joseph’s family were the WISHFM ‘Local Heroes Family of the Year’; - in 2014, Joseph switched on the Xmas Lights in Wigan Town Centre; - in 2014, Joseph’s Goal was recognised by Wigan Council as contributing to the ‘Believe in Wigan” campaign; - and in 2016, Joseph’s Goal was a Finalist in the GM Chamber of Commerce Wigan Business Awards. If you are looking for a charity to support, then please consider our charity, and help Joseph to achieve his Goal.
