The ethnicities retain their customs, religions, and their way of life, which is visible from a visit to the beautiful country. Their way of life shows their harmonised and peaceful existence with each other. The three main religions that the people of Malaysia follow are Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. The varied culture in Malaysia actually makes it very interesting. Each culture has its own traditions and customs which make it even more interesting.

MulticulturalismMalaysia is one country where the concept of multiculturalism is avidly followed. The presence of the various ethnic communities and diverse groups are recognized and

respected. The socio-cultural differences are acknowledged and a transaction of values and customs encouraged. The beliefs and behaviours of each community is shared and respected by the others to lead towards the growth of a nation where cooperative existence and sustainable living hold high value. Fostering Integration in Multi Ethnic Groups in SchoolsStudents in schools are popularly from the three main ethnic groups, while there are students from other minority groups too. Despite such diverse cultures, the schools in Malaysia strive to enhance social integration among the multiple student communities. The main goal of these Malaysian schools is to remove social prejudice and discrimination.

Building National UnityThe cornerstone of education policy in Malaysia happens to be national unity and integration. One of the major goals of national education policy was stated as “to inculcate and nurture national consciousness through fostering common ideals, values, aspiration, and loyalties in order to mould national unity and national identity in a multi-ethnic society. Ways to Inculcate Cultural HarmonyThe schools focus on various ways to inculcate harmony, and one of the easiest and simplest ways to achieve this is to encourage interaction between students from different ethnic groups. This will let them get a perspective into the other person’s culture and traditions and remove any prejudice from developing. This will lead to cross-racial contact which will promote greater social tolerance.

Importance of TeachersThe role of teachers in such a society is very high. It is the teacher who helps the students to understand the basic concept of multiculturalism and makes them grow into individuals with a deeper understanding of the shared customs and traditions and be more compassionate to members from other communities. A nation can only succeed in fostering national unity and harmony if the communities acknowledge and respect each other. This has to start from a very early age and it is schools which can play the most important role in this regard.
