•MAESTRO AR Rahman
Rahman of the moment
AR RAHMAN is celebrating after becoming top of the download charts thanks to the Olympics. Nimma Nimma, a Punjabi track he wrote especially for for last Friday’s opening ceremony, was “a hybrid desi sound with some brass elements and lots of voices.” Before the ceremony, he revealed on Facebook that the track would “celebrate the Indian influence in the UK”, adding that he had arranged the tune in a way that is “full-on” from the start, as it was part of a medley. Now that very medley has become the most downloaded track of the week. The song, along with others performed on the night, by artists that included The Arctic Monkeys, U2 and Paul McCartney, will now be released as an album by Universal Records. This wasn’t Rahman’s first musical outing during a major sporting event. He composed the theme song for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and performed at the opening ceremony.
