An 18-year-old woman was still alive when her boyfriend started to cut off her head with a knife, a jury has been told in Sheffield. 21-year-old Aras Hussein, killed Reema DECAPITATED: Emergency services say that the scene at the flat where Reema Ramzan’s body was discovered was the worst they had ever seen

Ramzan by decapitating her at his flat in Herries Road, Sheffield, before stabbing himself in the chest, the city's crown court heard this week. Prosecutor Graham Reeds QC told jurors about the wounds Miss Ramzan suffered at the hands of her Iraqi-born boyfriend on June 4, last year. Mr Reeds said: “Bruising into tissue wounds suggest that Reema was still alive as the defendant started to remove her head. “The process of decapitation would require considerable motion with corresponding considerable force which needed to be sustained until all the tissues had been cut through.

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

The relatives of a missing 21-year-old from Leeds, have taken to the streets with a campaign calling for members of the public to step forward if they have any information of his whereabouts. The family has recently expressed their disappointment to the Asian Express on how they feel the police has dealt with raising public awareness of Aamir Qudeers’s disappearance, which was over five weeks ago. Last week Aamir’s distraught parents Zatoon and Abdul Qudeer, of Scott Hall Road, said that his disappearance was completely out of character and that they are a very close family. Making an emotional plea at a press conference held on Wednesday March 26th and unable to control her tears Mrs Qudeer made a public and direct appeal to her son. She said: “We don’t know the reason why you left and disappeared as you did, but whatever it is we can sort it out as a family. Please come home, your dad and your sisters and I miss you.” The University of Bradford engineering student, 21year-old Aamir Qudeer, mysteriously went missing without trace on Wednesday February 26th. He had missed lectures shortly before he went missing, but there were no other signs that he was unhappy or in trouble. He left his flat in Forster Hall student accommodation in Great Horton Road at 1.15pm. He was last spotted in Leeds boarding a train to Liverpool and the last sighting of him on CCTV was at about 7pm that evening leaving the city's Lime Street station. Nobody has seen or heard from him since. Aamir’s aunt (khala) Abda Ali, speaking exclusively to the Asian Express, states that she is hugely concerned by the way the police have responded to her queries on the case and lack of support in generating a nationwide plea. Abda, who is the General Manager Forth Valley CCTV at Police Scotland, is questioning why extensive national media coverage has not been generated by the police press officers. “I’m very worried that Aamir has been stereotyped by the police as ‘just another Asian lad’, and that him being missing has not being taken as seriously as it should have been right from the start.’” Abda also revealed that both Aamir’s mobile devices have been switched off since his disappearance. Furthermore his bank and email accounts have not been accessed. “As you can imagine the family is going through turmoil. Aamir also missed celebrating his 21st birthday on 3rd March, it seems very unusual for a young person to miss such a milestone in their life. “My sister (Aamir’s mother) is falling to bits with worry and Aamir’s sisters Naila, Zakiya and Naimah just want to find out where their brother is and hope that he is safe and well.” Though it is known that the student’s phone was accessed for one email shortly after he arrived in Liverpool, the police have said on following up this lead: “This line of enquiry established that the phone was using an email provider which does not give the geographical location of an IP address. As such we are unable to pursue this further.” Upon being asked by Asian Express about how the police force deals with missing persons cases and how many officers were actively working on trying to find Aamir, the police answered: “Each case is considered

EMOTIONAL PLEA: Aamir’s parents Zatoon and Abdul Qudeer along with family and friends are campaigning in city centres, in the hope that members of the public will come forward to help establish Aamir’s whereabouts

“In a time like this when a family is out of their minds with worry about a missing loved one, trying to grab the national press’s attention to try and help is not what they should have to go through.”

on its individual circumstances. There is no set protocol. “Officers are tasked to the investigation depending on the demand placed on resources at the time, so it is impossible to give an exact figure of how many officers are working on the case. It is however, being overseen by a Detective Superintendent and has a single point of contact at Detective Inspector level.” Aside from a dozen articles over the last four weeks in mainstream press, very little has been covered about Aamir’s disappearance. “I’ve had to generate the interest of BBC Leeds myself, and managed to get some time on air and appeal for anyone that may have any information to get in touch with the police,” says Abda. “In a time like this when a family is out of their minds with worry about a missing loved one, trying to grab the national press’s attention to try and help is not what they should have to go through.” Aamir has been a Leeds and Harrogate student all his life prior to joining the University of

Bradford. His aunt says that he is extremely close to his family and usually if he has gone anywhere he would notify someone in the family. Since starting university in September last year, Aamir would come home every Friday and then be dropped off back to his Halls on Sundays. The Friday before he disappeared and spent the weekend with the family, as usual, and the family say that Aamir was completely normal. When he left to go back to Bradford on the Sunday, he said ‘See you on Friday.’ Still unknown why Aamir may have travelled to Liverpool, the family say that though they have relatives scattered across the country, there is no connection with the city. Detective Inspector Neil Benstead of Bradford CID, who is leading the search for the student said: "A month has now passed since Aamir went missing from Bradford. "We remain concerned for his welfare and are again appealing to him or anyone who may have seen him, in Merseyside or Yorkshire, to please make contact and reassure both us and his family that he is okay. "His disappearance is out of character and his lack of contact is

causing serious concern. Anyone with information or any possible sightings of Aamir can contact police on 101 or Missing People on 116000.

Aamir’s family are arranging another public awareness campaign on Saturday 5th April at Kirkgate, Bradford city centre and hope that this will encourage people who may have any information about Aamir’s disappearance to step forward. If you’d like to join and support the family, please contact them on Facebook ‘Missing Aamir Qudeer’.

Get creative with the Tour

Bradford Council is inviting applications for funding for cultural activities in support of the Tour de France. The Council is putting in place a small arts grants programme and organisations can apply for a grant from £500 to a £1,000. The funding announcement for creative projects coincides with the first ever Yorkshire Festival 2014 being launched today as the official countdown begins for the Tour de France. The Yorkshire Festival is the first ever festival to precede the Tour de France in its 111 year history. The official launch at Welcome to Yorkshire's annual conference in Harrogate marks 100 days to go until the Grand Depart, and to mark this Bradford's City Park fountains and City Hall clocktower will be turning yellow.

Car park closing

The council-owned market car park at Union Street and George Street will close on the evening of 5th April to allow construction to get underway on the £150m Victoria Gate retail development. Along with the John Lewis flagship store, 30 retail and restaurant units and casino, the development will feature a new high quality 800 space multi-storey car park on the Millgarth Police Station site, which will open in Autumn 2016. The council secured the Millgarth land from the West Yorkshire Police Authority to enable Hammerson, the developer of Victoria Gate to build and operate the new multi-storey car park. Information has been displayed at the car park forewarning motorists of the closure and suggesting alternative parking. For a full list and map of city centre car parks visit www.leeds.gov.uk

Rihanna & Drake were recently spotted having fun across Manchester along with all 16 members of their entourage. Rihanna had joined Drake for his gig at the Phones’s 4 u Arena in the city last month. The restaurant of choice for the celebs? Zouk Tea Bar & Grill in Chester Street, Manchester. The Yorkshire-based restaurant, which has a branch in Manchester had the pleasure of serving up their sizzling culinary treats when a booking was made in advance for Rihanna and Drake. Drake has already enjoyed Zouk’s mouthwatering delights which were served up by the chefs of the awardwinning restaurant Zouk Tea Bar & Grill back in 2012. Though originally a table had been booked in advance on this visit, but when Zouk’s management suggested booking out the entire restaurant for privacy and exclusive VIP treatment, they went for it! Seems like it was just as well, as crowds of people including press had swamped the entire perimeter of the restaurant by the time Rehanna and Drake arrived for their meal. Once safely inside, the group went on to order specialist dishes from the unique Indian menu including Chilo Kebab, King Prawns, Steak and Lobster Thermadour which were then washed down with cocktails & shots. They all looked to be having a fantastic evening as they were all laughing and joking. Then at the end of the night the pair thanked restaurant Director Tayub Amjad by saying they really enjoyed their meal and would, of course, be returning again in the future!

CELEBRITY Rihanna and Drake booked out the entire restaurant

Tayub Amjad commented: “Drake & Rihanna visiting Zouk Manchester is fantastic news for us. “Drake visited originally in 2012 so it’s great to see him back again with another A list celebrity! “The group had a great time and enjoyed the food, when they were leaving they also promised to return when they were next in town. We look forward EXCLUSIVE: Management at Zouk, to seeing them Manchester keep the paparazzi away again in the future.” There are also some unconfirmed whispers by medical students that the pair along with all of their 16 bodyguards played basketball at the Sugdon Centre (Manchester University) till early hours of the morning! We like Rihanna and Drakes party till all hours style!

The group ordered Zouks’ specialities Chilo Kebab, King Prawns, Steak and Lobster Thermadour amongst other dishes

Leeds author gives us

Ridiculous Witches! By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk One of Leeds’ fastest rising children’s authors made sure her home city was not forgotten about last weekend as a ‘Ridiculous Witch’ was spotted in Headingley. ‘The odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ is the latest book to be released by Yorkshire author, Sarah Shafi, in her ‘Ridiculous Witches’ series, and was read for the first time at Headingley LitFest 2014. The Leeds-based story follows on from the likes of ‘The Royal trumping witch of Windsor’ and ‘The Ludicrous pie-eating witch of Wigan’, with Leeds’ nonsensical character living up to her predecessor’s reputations. This latest tale follows Headingley’s very own witch, who, much like the author, grew up on Spring Road in Leeds and has a passion for cars. But, like all the other ‘Ridiculous witches’ before her, there is a big problem she must overcome. “She is a good witch but she has had a wicked witch as a mother who has turned her into a toad so she has a problem,” Sarah explained. “She has every single car on the planet, Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches, the lot, but they’re all being smashed up across Leeds. But, there is a very special reason for this, and you will find out why it is when you read the book.” The Ridiculous Witches books have quickly become a favourite amongst youngsters aged between six and ten-years-old, with famed artist, Tony Husband (Private Eye), providing illustrations for every book. Having only begun writing children books within the last three to four years, Sarah Shafi has quickly found her forte and she says this is down to one person in particular. “My daughter, Persia, is my absolute rock of inspiration,” she

said. “She is ten-years-old now and whilst she has grown up she, and her friends, have loved listening to my crazy, made-up stories. “It wasn’t until recently that I actually put pen to paper and started writing the books and they can take anything from a couple of weeks to months to complete. “I’ve always had an overactive, weird imagination ever since I was a kid, so the Ridiculous Witches stories are something I just love doing.” Being from Leeds is something Sarah says she has always been proud of and therefore it was only a matter of time until her stories came to the city. She added: “This tale is particularly close to my heart because she shares my story of coming from Headingley. “The dialect in the book is ‘very Yorkshire’ as well so it really feels like a book that the local community could relate to.” Ridiculous Witches from cities across England, including Windsor, York, Manchester, Wigan and most recently Leeds, must sort out their problems before they can be considered ‘proper witches’. With moral twists and wacky storylines, the tales have proved to be a big hit already, whilst the ‘Odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ was warmly received by tens of children and their parents at Headingley library last weekend. In a free, open reading, Sarah read her book to the youngsters before a question and answer session took place as part of Headingley LitFest 2014. The annual festival spans across Headingley and still has a number of events taking place over the next week.

Headingley LitFest volunteer and secretary, Richard Wilcocks, explained how important it was to ensure there was something for everybody throughout the three weeks of events. He added: “We are run by a team of volunteers and it is intended to be a community literature festival which lets everybody get involved. “We have had top flight authors,

performers and actors come to the festival and Headingley has always been full of talent - Tolkien lived here from 1920’s onwards, and Arthur Ransome, best known for the children’s classic Swallows and Amazons was born here. “We have reached out to every part of the community and have had fair amount of success so far with all sectors from youth, to teen and older generations.”

Highest honour for BRI doctor

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A doctor from Bradford Royal Infirmary said he was ‘incredibly humbled’ after learning of the news that he was to be honoured with his home country’s highest civilian honour. Dr Sulleman Moreea, originally from Mauritius, was awarded the Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean award earlier this month from the President of the African nation. Since 2008 he has worked closely with Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, and the country’s Ministry of Health, to introduce, train and improve endoscopies across the five hospitals. Having done much of the work at his own expense, including travel, equipment, and training, and all in his own time, Dr Moreea was told he was to receive a medal for his efforts yet never expected to receive such a prestigious accolade. “It was on Sunday 9th March that I got a phone call from the Mauritius Prime Minister telling me the country was going to give me a medal for the work I had done and it would be announced on Wednesday 12th,” he said. “I was obviously full of pride but I told him that I may not be able to make it at such short notice as I hadn’t booked any time off. “It was actually my family and co-workers who insisted I went. My colleagues were amazing, they took care of all my work that week because they said it was a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity I couldn’t miss’.” He added: “When the list was announced and I saw which medal I was to receive I was incredibly humbled, shocked and surprised. “I would have felt extremely privileged to receive any medal but this one has certainly acted as motivation for me to finish what I

started in the country.” Dr Moreea first began working in Mauritius six years ago after organising one-toone training following a discussion with the country’s Prime Minister, who is also a former doctor at the Yorkshire Clinic. His work across the five hospitals has helped improve the operating standards significantly whilst endoscopies can now be performed in units which previously didn’t even exist. Local Imam backs high blood pressure awareness campaign By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A local Imam has given his full support to a pilot campaign in Wakefield to identify people with undiagnosed high blood pressure. Last month, the Public Health England joined local businesses, pharmacies and public services to launch a new campaign, which will encourage people aged 40 and over to visit one of over 50 blood pressure drop-ins set up across the area. Mr Islam Ali Shah, Wakefield Central Jamia Masjid who has backed the campaign said that he was delighted to see this service offered locally in Wakefield. He commented: “As so many South Asians are at risk of high blood pressure this is a great opportunity for them to go and get tested for free. “I urge everyone to take advantage of the services out there and get themselves tested and if they’ve missed the drop-in centre, you can always go to your GP.' High blood pressure is estimated to cause over 20% of heart attacks and 50% of strokes, and last year in Wakefield there were over 1,000 emergency admissions to hospital for a heart attack or stroke. During the same period, 179 people died from a heart attack and 148 from a stroke.

Nearly a third of adults (84,000 people) in Wakefield are estimated to have high blood pressure however around 30,000 people are not yet diagnosed. Dr Stephen Morton, Public Health England’s Centre Director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Your chance of having high blood pressure increases as you get older however the condition is often symptomless and is impossible to spot without a test. “This is why a number of drop-ins have been set up across Wakefield – to make it as easy as possible for people to find out if they are one of the 30,000 people currently undiagnosed with high blood pressure in the area. “By working closely with community groups and organisations we hope to reduce premature deaths by raising detection of high blood pressure and educating everyone on the steps they can take to control their blood pressure.” There are a number of steps people can take to help manage their blood pressure, including losing weight, exercising regularly, cutting down on salt and eating a healthy diet. Councillor Janet Holmes, Mayor of Wakefield, is backing the campaign that is close to her heart: “I am so pleased that Public Health England’s first-ever blood pressure campaign is being piloted in

It could save your life, it’s as simple as that. “It’s a painless, five-minute test that will be widely available across the whole of Wakefield over the coming four weeks. If high blood pressure is identified, there are treatments available, but time really is of the essence. If left untreated, your risk of a heart attack or stroke increases.”

ANGRY: Zafar Chaudhry, pictured with his ticket, says he was disappointed with the level of customer service offered to him by PIA staff and believes they ‘do not put the customer first’

April 2014 - 1st Edition

PIA’s latest nightmare journey

Leaking loos and lost luggage propel PIA into spotlight once again

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A pilot from Swindon said he was ‘appalled’ by the number of problems he encountered on a recent visit to Pakistan, with PIA airlines once again at the centre of the controversy. Four-hour delays, lost luggage, ‘terrible customer service’, and an overflowing toilet down the aisles, are just some of the issues 52-year-old Zafar Chaudhry says he was forced to endure when dealing with the airline. After travelling to Pakistan in April last year, he decided to recently report his nightmare story to the Asian Express after seeing a rise in incidents surrounding PIA. “I just felt that the standard of the airline, from the top of the organisation to the bottom, was so poor that I had to report it,” he said. “It was only the second time I have flown with PIA and how they handled all the issues of my trip was just appalling.” Recently, the South Asian airline has come under a lot of criticism from passengers who have felt the service being offered to them is well below par. News of a pilot attempting to board the plane drunk last year, and a host of long delays, have proved detrimental to the airline’s reputation, which is often favoured by passengers flying from the UK, due to its direct flight to Pakistan. Mr Chaudhry, a pilot for 20 years, was flying out to Pakistan, as a passenger, on the 20th April

last year when his first plane was delayed for four hours. After arriving in Islamabad he was then unable to locate any PIA staff to direct him to where he could get his connecting flight from, almost making him miss the plane. “I was looking for more than 20 minutes for a member of staff from the airline as I do not know the way around Islamabad airport at all,” he explained. “I finally got directions from a member of security and thankfully caught my plane to Karachi.” Upon arriving at his destination, Mr Chaudhry was informed that his luggage had not been on the plane and would have to come back the following day to collect it. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “The plane could not carry everybody’s luggage, it was too small, so they just left it without even telling us. They offered no compensation, so I was wearing the same clothes I had been travelling in for two days. “I got given a number to call the following day which I did at around 2.30pm and got told to call back at 3pm. I phone them then, they said call back in ten minutes. “I did, and they said phone back in ten minutes again until eventually after doing that about five times I got told to pick up my luggage at 6pm. “When I went back, I had to hire a car to get from my location to the airport, which was about 20 miles away, only to be told my luggage would be at the PIA base, at a different location.”

Mr Chaudhry was finally reunited with his personal belongings yet his problems with the airline did not finish there. “On the way back to the UK, there were even more problems,” he explained. “The warm food we were offered was so cold it was uneatable and once again the staff were rude.” He added: “About 30 minutes before we were due to land, the toilet on board the plane had clogged up and the liquid from it had leaked under the door and was running down the aisle as we began our descent. “It smelt horrible but still nothing was done.” Despite a number of complaints made to the airlines Mr Chaudhry was only offered £65 in compensation and 3,000 AirMiles, with terms and conditions attached. “I initially thought that’s great when I heard about the AirMiles,” he explained. “Only to then be told that they had to be used before the end of the year and a 30 day period had to be given before they were. Also they could not be used in conjunction with cash. “So I sat down to see where the 3,000 AirMiles could take me and they were literally useless. The cheapest one-way flight to Pakistan, in economy, was 11,000 AirMiles, so what I had been given was useless compensation.” Mr Chaudhry added that he had flown numerous times with other airlines, and ‘none of them are perfect yet they at least admit when they make mistakes and compensate for it’.

HOME REMEDIES TO MAKE YOUR FACE GLOW For Dry Skin

• Mash half a ripe banana, add a teaspoon of honey and make a paste. Apply on your face. Once it dries, wash with cold water and pat dry. This acts as a moisturiser and helps in tighten your skin.

• Soak khus khus (poppy seeds) overnight. Grind it with just enough milk to make a paste. Apply on your face. Once it dries, wash with cold water.

The natural oil present in khus khus helps to moisturise your skin. • Just before boiling milk, remove two tablespoons. Massage it lightly on your face in an upward motion. Leave to dry, then wash with water and pat dry. This helps to keep your skin supple.

Variation: Add ¼ teaspoon of salt to the raw milk and follow the same process. However, avoid doing this if you have pimples on your face.

• Make a paste of 2-5 tablespoons of raw peanuts with milk. Add ¼ teaspoon of honey to it. Apply on your face. Leave to dry. Then wash with cold water and pat dry. The natural oils present in the peanuts help moisturise your skin.

• Make a paste of one teaspoon of malai, a pinch of turmeric and four to five drops of olive oil. Apply on your face, leave to dry. Wash with cold water and pat dry. Malai acts as a natural moisturiser and turmeric and olive oil helps rejuvenate your skin.

REMEMBER: Raja Tariq Mehmood has dedicated walls in his Bradford home to his father’s (Subh Ali Shan) achievements, with medals, pictures and clippings from his career in the Navy

Son of honoured Lieutenant Commander joins up with the Royal British Legion

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford resident has become the first Asian member in 50 years to join the city’s Royal British Legion after signing up in honour of his father. 60-year-old Raja Tariq Mehmood says he is ‘extremely proud’ to wear the 13 medals, obtained by Subh Ali Shan from both British and Pakistan governments, and hopes his new membership will only carry on his father’s legacy. “My father was as beautiful as his name was,” Mr Mehmood said. “It translated into a beautiful morning and I remember him as a fantastic person. “He was very young, about 17, when he first joined the British Indian Navy in 1941. He was with them for about six years until ‘47 when Pakistan became an independent country and so he joined the Pakistan Navy.” Subh Ali Shan was a highly decorated member of the Navy who collected 13 medals throughout his 33 years of service before finally retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1979. Unfortunately, he sadly passed away just five months later yet Mr Mehmood says it is now up to his family to keep his father’s memory alive. He explained how he joined

the Royal British Legion in hope of bringing ‘warranted attention’ to his father’s achievements. “I didn’t know how to make use of these medals but luckily read an article about somebody honouring their father’s medals so did some research,” he said. “I was put through to a number in London and ended up speaking with the MoD (Ministry of Defence) who then put me in touch with the British Royal Legion, and the next morning I got a call from them saying they wanted to see me. “I went down to the

Bradford branch and they said it was a ‘privilege’ to have me and my father’s medals on board. “I attended my first meeting earlier this week and I loved it, it was very enjoyable. Everybody is so respectful and it is an honour for me to be with them.” Mr Mehmood’s father was awarded five medals from the British Navy: Atlantic Star, Pacific Star, War Star, and two Memorial Medals; as well as eight more from Pakistan including several for fighting in four wars with India, and a Ten-year, 20-year, and 30-year service medal.

Mr Mehmood added that he had hoped to carry on his father’s legacy through joining the forces yet was unfortunately only able to complete one year before having to leave. “It was always a dream of mine to be in the Navy or the Air Force,” he explained. “When I finally joined up in Pakistan I was told a little while later that I had to return to England or lose my citizenship. “I was never able to go back to the services in Pakistan but am extremely proud to be able to wear my father’s medals and keep his legacy alive.”

ACCUSED: Danish Irfan appeared at Bradford Crown Court last week, more than four months after his wife was killed

April 2014 - 1st Edition

Court proceedings begin A Bradford father and husband, accused of murdering his wife last year, finally appeared in the dock last week at the city’s Crown Court, months after the alleged crime took place. 22-year-old Danish Irfan, of Alford Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford, appeared in the dock accused of killing his partner, Ridda Zanab, at their home address. Irfan had gone to Pakistan following the death of his wife, yet upon return to the UK last month, was arrested as he stepped off the plane. He was taken to Bradford for questioning by West Yorkshire Police before later being charged with the

Murder suspect finally appears in court murder. The body of Ridda Zanab, the mother of Irfan’s baby daughter, was found in the early hours of the morning of 3rd November last year, in the upstairs bedroom. Irfan did not enter a plea to the charge when court proceedings started on Friday 14th March, and the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Roger Thomas QC, has

now set a trial date for 21st July. The defendant only spoke when confirming his name and had an interpreter beside him to translate the proceedings. Irfan’s counsel, Yunus Valli, told the court that a psychiatrist would be seeing his client and that ‘all avenues need to be investigated’ in regard to the killing of Mrs Zanab. Judge Thomas remanded Irfan in custody until his next court appearance on the 2nd May whilst the July trial has been scheduled to last five days. Irfan and his wife were married in 2012. Their six-month-old daughter is being cared for by relatives.

Strengthening relationships

SIGNED: The Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by Professor David Taylor, University of Huddersfield’s Pro ViceChancellor International, and Dr Ibrahim Rustam, Deputy Dean of the School of Engineering from Benghazi University

Huddersfield and Benghazi come together through new agreement They may be separated by more than 3,000 miles yet the University of Huddersfield has cemented its ‘close relationship’ with an institution that will play a key role in shaping a new future for Libya. Senior figures from the Benghazi University came on a fact-finding visit earlier this week and signed a special ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ when they visited the West Yorkshire town. The result will mean larger numbers of Libyans continuing their studies at Huddersfield and a succession of Benghazi staff visiting the University for research sabbaticals. There are already some 200 Libyan students at the University of Huddersfield, mostly studying for postgraduate degrees, including PhDs, across a wide range of courses. Highway to health Step aside HS2, there is another new route planned which could not only give Yorkshire’s residents easier access to two major cities but also improve health and fitness at the same time. A Bradford to Leeds CityConnect ‘cycle super-highway’ could soon be arriving in West Yorkshire as a £29million scheme is proposed to link the two cities. Aimed at reducing congestion on the roads, as well as promoting the healthy lifestyle, the route would be an alternative option for motorists fed up of the rush hour traffic. Metro Chairman, and Councillor for Kippax and Methley, James Lewis, explained what he hoped the route would achieve. He said: “By combining dedicated cycle paths, an upgrade to the canal tow path and 20mph zones feeding into the main route, CityConnect will provide people with a safe environment for cycling and walking. “CityConnect will transform cycling between and within our cities and by providing people with CYCLE: Leeds is a bike-friendly city with dedicated lanes for cyclists more safe and attractive travel options, will help to reduce down all major routes (as pictured on the Headrow) yet the CityConnect cycle congestion on our roads with the superhighway would create a whole new traffic-free route for bikers to use subsequent economic benefit that cover the city centre and matter has not been overlooked by brings.” Consultation has now begun on Thornbury, including Gain Lane the councillors, with a number of sessions held in Bradford to discuss the Bradford section of the cycle and Dick Lane. The public’s opinion on the ideas and proposals. superhighway route which would

Issues being looked at include how the scheme might affect junction layouts as well as parking and access, while at the same time ensuring safety for cyclists, pedestrians and other road users. Cllr Val Slater, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Housing, Planning and Transport, explained: “This is an important scheme that will improve the connectivity between our two cities and create new opportunities for businesses, jobs, housing and health. “It is also about improving the way people in these areas of Bradford can get around and how they are impacted by the route including getting to work in some of our key areas. “We are carrying out the consultation along the route so the people of Bradford and people who live nearby can have their say. I would encourage people to go along to the consultation events.” The final consultation hearing is due to take place at Bradford Cathedral on 28th March from 6pm until 9pm, and is open to everybody. For those who cannot attend but would like to voice an opinion, you can submit feedback by email on cityconnect@wypte.gov.uk, Twitter @cityconnect1, or visit the website www.cyclecityconnect.co.uk for more details.

New Shariacompliant University loans for students NEW: The Sharia law-compliant loans will help Muslim students go to university

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A new model for Sharia lawcompliant student loans has been unveiled this week by Universities and Science Minister David Willetts. The proposed system will enable people whose religious beliefs forbid them from taking out loans that accrue interest to take advantage of student loans. Speaking at a Universities UK Conference on universities and growth, David Willetts launched a

consultation on the proposed model asking for views on whether it is an acceptable alternative to the conventional system. The model will be available to anyone who adopts similar financial principles. Anyone taking the loans will not be at any advantage or disadvantage – they will repay the same amount as other borrowers. David Willetts said: “The Government is committed to ensuring that anyone with the ability and desire can go to university.

“Sharia-compliant student loans will also give universities access to a wider pool of talent and help the UK get the higher level skills we need to secure long-term economic growth.” The intention to develop Sharia law-compliant student loans was announced by the Prime Minister last year. The Government is seeking feedback from current and prospective students, community representatives and higher education providers. The consultation opened April 3rd and will run for 12 weeks.

“Sharia-compliant student loans will also give universities access to a wider pool of talent and help the UK get the higher level skills we need to secure long-term economic growth.”

Quiet Room opens at Trinity Leeds PRAYER: Quiet rooms have been opened in a number of public places recently including the White Rose Shopping Centre and now Trinity Leeds

WASH: A washing room, with an ablution facility is available for use to allow people to wash themselves

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The bustling Trinity Leeds retail and leisure centre has opened a quiet room for use by visitors and staff. The room, located on the top floor, past the Trinity Kitchen, has a wash area and quiet room which can be used by all races and religions to fulfil physical, spiritual and religious needs. Centre director Kevin Duffy, was excited to open the latest facility, hoping that it would further extend the inclusivity of the shopping centre. He said: “We are delighted to provide this extra community facility and believe it will prove very popular among shoppers and people who work here.” Land Securities, which owns and manages Trinity Leeds and White Rose Shopping Centre, opened a quiet room at the latter in November 2012 following discussions with representatives from faith and community groups, including the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston. Hamara chief executive

Hanif Malik, said: “The quiet room at White Rose has gone down really well. It’s great to have a place in the heart of a busy centre where people of all faiths, or no faith at all, can go to say their prayers or have a few moments of peace.” He added: “I anticipate that the quiet room at Trinity Leeds will be very well used and appreciated.” Fazle Rabbi tried out the facilities earlier this week and said they were perfect for all religions. “As a Muslim, to have a space like this is fantastic as it allows me to go somewhere quiet and pray whilst out shopping,” he said. “The facilities are great and this Wuzu (ablution facility) allows Muslims to have a good wash before they pray which is very important. “In the same sense, this place is great for other religions too as it is a place away from the busy shopping centre, meaning anybody who needs this quiet space can use it.” The quiet room is close to other community facilities and can be found by using the escalators by Trinity Kitchen. It is open for quiet contemplation and prayer from 9am until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am until 5pm on Sundays.

PRAYER: Fazle Rabbi explained why the room was perfect for everybody, including Muslims like himself, as it gave enough space to pray

FAT VAT RESIDENT: Hena Begum has lived on Amberley Street, Bradford, for more than 20 years and was issued with one of the Fat Vats to dispose of her cooking oil

Bradford homes to be powered through renewable energy An innovative trial has been launched in Bradford, where excess cooking oils could soon be used to power a selection of the city’s homes. 85 residents across two streets in the Bradford Moor area have been issued with ‘Fat Vats’, plastic buckets in which households are urged to put their waste cooking oil rather than pour it down the drain. Over the last five years, 80 sewer blockages have been reported by Yorkshire Water in the Bradford Moor area, with fatty oils clogging up the water flow, the main concern. This new trial not only helps solve the long-standing drainage problem but simultaneously provides homes with renewable energy. The tubs are collected from resident’s homes and taken to a large waste collection unit, provided by renewable energy experts Living Fuels, which is filled and then taken to one of their energy centres for conversion. The two streets involved in the trial are

Amberley Street and Welland Terrace. Resident of the prior for more than 20 years, Hena Begum, received her Fat Vat earlier this month and although she thought it was a good idea, she added that it may not prove a huge success straight away. “We have used the buckets but to be honest I have not really found it that helpful,” she said. “I don’t get enough waste oil to put in the Fat Vat but I can see how it may be good if a lot of houses were all putting their oil in. “If it stops drain problems then it is of course a good thing so I have been putting in what little I do use.” Waste oil gathered from just one of the collection units, which can hold in excess of 1,000 litres, could go on to provide the power to make 250,000 cups of tea, or power a microwave for 3,000

hours. Duncan Woodhead, Network Protection Technician at Yorkshire Water, was delighted to launch the programme and said he was looking forward to seeing the results. He said: “We've been working closely with local residents and are asking them to do their bit by not tipping their waste cooking fats, oils and greases down the sewer. “A lot of people don’t realise the damage this can do because these liquids solidify when they get down to the sewers and that can cause blockages. We are all now looking forward to experiencing the benefits this new trial will bring.” 110 kilotonnes of used cooking oil is disposed of each year by UK householders, which could power 110,000 homes with carbon neutral electricity.

As the financial gap between the rich and the poor gets ever wider, a new food bank in Bradford is aiming to help out families at the lower end of the economic scale. Operating out of Save the Mother’s Trust’s Great Horton site, food will be packed and handed over to distributors across the area who are then tasked with ensuring it is given to some of society’s most vulnerable. A joint initiative, launched by both Save the Mother’s Trust and the Bradford central branch of Lions Club International, food parcels will be available to be picked up between 11am and 1pm every Thursday. At the launch event, on Thursday 27th March, dignitaries from both organisations were present, alongside the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Khadim Hussain, to officially open the project.

Rotherham community worker picks up her MBE

By Royal appointment For more than 30 years, a Rotherham resident has worked tirelessly with the local public all in hope of creating a cohesive community and her efforts have now been royally recognised. Zanib Rasool received her MBE for services to the community earlier this week from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, at Buckingham Palace after being named on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. From breaking down ethnic and cultural barriers in football, to supporting victims of domestic violence, Miss Rasool has been involved in tens of projects during her time in South Yorkshire. Speaking to the Asian Express, she expressed her delight at receiving the award and said it did come as a surprise. “I was absolutely delighted to receive the news, not just for myself but for everyone I work with,” she said. “People in the Rotherham

community work so hard to develop the lives of people in our local area and a lot of Asian women who I have worked with in particular deserve a lot of credit. “It did come as a surprise when I received the news and it was great especially for my nieces as I can see it helping to inspire them, and others like them, to put back into the community.” In the early 1980’s, Miss Rasool was a key player in the establishment of the United MultiCultural Centre, the first community organisation in Rotherham dedicated to supporting Asian women. Working in her local area of Masbrough and Ferham, she has also helped develop and sustain a number of projects whilst acting as Chair of the Ferham Children Centre and serving as a Magistrate in Rotherham. Since 2005 she has also been Trustee of Apna Haq (BME domestic violence project) and a

trustee of Home Start Rotherham. In 2008 she became Community Project Manager of Rotherham United Community Sports Trust (RUCST) where she still works on making football more inclusive for all ethnicities and cultures, whilst also playing an influential role in securing over £1.4m of external funding. Under her leadership RUCST was the Football League 2012 Community Club of the year. HONOURED: Zanib Rasool was awarded her MBE from Buckingham Palace earlier this week for services to the community in Rotherham, South Yorkshire

£5000 raised for Syria A group of Bradford volunteers are celebrating raising almost five thousand pounds for Syrian refugees. Twenty-eight runners competed in the Bradford 10k on behalf of a Bradford based charity to raise money for needy Syrians living in Jordan. Fundraising Manager Muqaddus Khan commented: “We had such a fantastic response from this appeal. Dozens of people signed up for it and ran the distance for the Human Relief Foundation’s Syrian aid appeal. “Participants had to raise £100 to take part, but some raised much, much more. One person even managed to raise £1,200. “With this money we could feed eighty three families for a whole month, or one family for six years. It is an incredible achievement.” Human Relief Foundation has been working with Syrians since the conflict began in 2011. The charity distributes food to over 66,000 refugees every single month and is a humanitarian aid organisation with permanent offices in seven countries; Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Bangladesh. The Syria crisis began in March 2011 and has so far killed over 135,000 people. 2.5 million people have left Syria, over ten percent of the total population. Over 11.8 million people, half of Syria’s population, are in urgent need of help.

5 richest UK families have more than 12 million poorest Brits

The five richest families in the UK are wealthier than the bottom 20 per cent of the entire population and the gap between the rich and the rest has grown significantly over the last two decades, according to new figures. The alarming statistics show that just five wealthy UK households have more money than the poorest 12.6 million Britons – almost the same number of people as those living in households below the UK poverty line. Oxfam, who conducted the research, also say that over the past two decades the wealthiest 0.1 percent have seen their income grow nearly four times faster than the least well off 90 percent of the population. In real terms, that means a wealthy

elite have seen their income grow by £24,000 a year, enough to buy a small yacht or a sports car, whilst the bottom 90 percent of Britons’ incomes have gone up by only a few pounds a week. The average UK salary is £26,500-ayear. Ben Phillips, Oxfam’s Director of Campaigns and Policy, said: “Britain is becoming a deeply divided nation, with a wealthy elite who are seeing their incomes spiral up, whilst millions of families are struggling to make ends meet. “It’s deeply worrying that these extreme levels of wealth inequality exist in Britain today, where just a handful of people have more money than millions struggling to survive on the breadline.”

Growing numbers of Britons are turning to charity-run foodbanks, yet at the same time the highest earners in the UK have had the biggest tax cuts of any country in the world. Ahead of this week’s Budget, Oxfam is calling on the Government to rebalance the books by raising revenues from those who can most afford it, starting with the redoubling of efforts to clamp down on companies and individuals who avoid paying their fair share of tax and setting out a long-term strategy to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. With 12 billion in welfare cuts still to come and pressure mounting to offer more tax cuts for the better off at the next election, the agency is also asking all parties to audit how their emerging

manifesto policies would affect economic inequality in the UK. Ben Phillips said: “Increasing inequality is a sign of economic failure rather than success. It’s far from inevitable – a result of political choices that can be reversed. It’s time for our leaders to stand up and be counted on this issue.” Economic inequality is far from being a UK only problem - a similar picture of a rapidly increasing gap between rich and poor can be seen in most countries across the globe. An Oxfam report published ahead of this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Working For the Few, revealed that the richest 85 people on the planet own the same amount between them as half the world’s population – 3.5

billion people. The report warned that extreme inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth concentrated in the hands of a few is used to buy political influence which is used to rig the rules in favour of a small elite and perpetuate inequality. Such extreme inequality is to the detriment of social mobility and is also increasingly understood to undermine both the pace and sustainability of economic growth. Ben Phillips said: “While many rich people use a portion of their wealth to support individual good causes, this should not be used as an excuse for governments failing to tackle the problem of growing inequality.”

Tragic death of daughter ‘may have triggered mum’s suicide’ Coroners have released the name of the woman who killed herself in a Shipley supermarket. Sobia Yousef stabbed herself in the neck on Tuesday 25th March morning in Asda and died in the store just after 8.30am. The 36-year-old of Beamsley Road, Frizinghall, was said to have been driven to despair after losing her nine-year-old daughter

to a terminal illness five months ago. Members of the community said Sobia’s world fell apart when the daughter she was devoted to lost her battle with a terminal illness. The mother had since been suffering from mental health problems. Neighbours have spoken of how the woman was often seen in

an emotional and distressed state. Questions are now being raised about the level of care and her treatment, which she had received at Lynfield Mount psychiatric hospital in Bradford, and if the authorities were at grasps with her extreme mental state.

MATHEMATICIANS: Thousands of young children joined Johnny Ball earlier this week as they attempted to smash the world record for the biggest maths lesson

Calculating a RECORD! Leeds pupils gather at Elland Road for world’s biggest maths lesson Over 7,000 pupils from more than 130 schools across Leeds gathered at Elland Road last month as the city’s young mathematicians attempted to smash a world record. Led by worldrenowned television personality and maths maestro, Johnny Ball, the pupils were involved in a spectacular day of interactive learning. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing were just some of the tasks children were set on the day whilst competitions and

prizes brought the competitive edge. The lesson was open to all schoolchildren in Yorkshire between the ages of nine and 13 in Key Stage Two and Three, and was held during national science week. Representatives from the Guinness Book of Records were also present on the day to tally up the attendance and find out if it was in fact a world record. United forward, Matt Smith, may be more known for using his head to score goals than for quick

calculations, yet he was on stage alongside centre-back Tom Lees, to help carry out the day’s activities. Leeds United’s Managing Director, David Haigh, was also on hand to present two lucky winners with a signed shirt and a signed ball. Organisers said the maths lessons were a fantastic opportunity for all young people across Yorkshire, regardless of ability, and educational packs, which were provided to teachers, ensured all who were in attendance joined in.

OPTIONS: Stalls were set up by organisations to explain, to year 8 and 9 students, sensible options to choose to study in their GCSEs should they want to follow a particular career path

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

More than 350 students from a Bradford secondary school attended an options evening last week with special guest graduates on hand to explain the importance of setting a career path. Year 8 and 9 pupils from Tong High School attended the explanatory event whereby they didn’t only have the opportunity to explore their current options but also talk to representatives from local universities, Tong Sixth Form and local and national employers. With parents and guardians also present, the evening worked as an

ideal opportunity for students and families to find out more about the different education pathways and career routes. Guest speaker, Paul Mackie, inspired students and their families about choices he had made and his story from struggling student to Chairman at Rex Procter and Partners, President of Bradford Chamber of Commerce and the Chair of E3 Bradford. Mr Mackie is also the Chair of the Tong School Trust and said he hoped to help inspire the next generation of graduates.

“I was delighted to be invited to speak to students and parents about the importance of the decisions they are making now and how they will influence future career paths,” he said. “I hope that by telling my story I have in some small way inspired them to think positively about their options and to start taking steps now to ensuring that they achieve success in future.” Meanwhile, members of Tong High School Alumni had sent messages of inspiration to current students which were displayed on

the evening. Sabhita Raju, humanitarian affairs advisor for the Spanish Chapter of ‘Medecins Sans Frontieres’ (Doctors without Borders) covering Kenya, Somalia, Yemen, Ethiopia, India and Eritrea, attended the school between 1986 to 1991 She wrote: “Never think that coming from a relatively small city or humble background should stop you from chasing the highest levels in life and believing you can achieve them. I have travelled the world and met a lot of people at all levels, including the highest.

“They are just people at the end of the day, some smart and some not so smart, and being a girl or boy from Tong and from Bradford makes you as good as any of them and probably more grounded and in touch with reality.” A host of local and national companies offered their advice throughout the evening, whilst a survey of the attending parents highlighted that 92.9 per cent of families said they felt their child had been supported through the options process.

£16,000 raised for flood victims Religions come together to aid those most in need

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A delegation of generous fundraisers from a West Yorkshire voluntary organisation travelled more than 200 miles last weekend to deliver vital funding to the flood-hit area of Somerset. The Batley-based Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), made the long trip south, as they presented a cheque of £16,000 to the Somerset Community Foundation flood appeal fund. After seeing pictures of the floods through the media, the group began fundraising in mosques throughout Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield, and within a couple of weeks, had already raised more than £10,000. Chairman of IMWS, Mohamed Mulla, explained why the group were so determined to help out and how delighted he was to see interfaith relations. “Although there may not be any connection between the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and Somerset, we have the connection of humanity and that is why we knew we had to help,” he said. “We saw pictures of homes which had been

flooded and decided we must do something to help. “It was through working with the Somerset Community Foundation that we actually got involved with the fundraising efforts and the work alongside the Bishop of Taunton.” The group presented the £16,000 cheque to the foundation before being taken on a tour of the affected areas, starting with the church in Muchelney, which acted as the central hub for the flood relief effort, before moving on to Burrowbridge. The Bishop of Taunton, the Rt Rev Peter Maurice, welcomed the IMWS to the long-marooned Somerset village after meeting them in Thorney. “This is such a wonderful gesture of solidarity from one community to another,” he said. “It's heartening to find that rural communities in distress in Somerset are getting support from Muslim communities in Yorkshire. “We're very grateful to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and to all the individuals who have generously contributed to the collection. We are

deeply grateful for their expression of kindness, compassion and care for those affected by the flooding.” The group also met Rita Dobson, a resident in Taunton whose home has been flooded twice already this year, in January and February. Ms Dobson said it was lovely to meet a group who were simply raising funds due to the goodness of their hearts. “It is really nice to meet some people who genuinely care,” she said. “It’s not politically motivated or anything like that, it’s just the generosity of the heart, it does get you quite emotional really. “When you’re living in a quite sad looking house at the moment, just little things like this can make a huge difference. My spirit has been lifted today.” The IMWS have prided themselves on helping disasters both close to home and elsewhere in the world. In 2009, they raised thousands for the Cumbrian flood victims and have also raised much more for the tsunami relief work in 2004.

Tahir Ali

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Three men from Bradford have been jailed for a combined total of 30 years for their roles in a major drugs conspiracy involving almost £2million of Class A drugs. Sheeraz Khan, 33, from Garibaldi Street, Thornbury; and Tahir Ali, 28, from Thornton Lane, little Horton, were both handed 11 year sentences, whilst Saif Al-Meskry, 22, from Thornton Lane, Little Horton, was given a nine and a half year term. All three pleaded guilty to conspiring to supply Class A drugs. The three men planned on dealing heroin and cocaine worth in excess of £1.8million, with their haul, in an industrial unit in West Bowling, only discovered by officers during a routine burglary patrol. In November 2012, officers made the discovery at Lessarna Court, where 30kilograms of heroin was seized by the police. The base had acted as a production plant for crack cocaine whilst doubling up as a storage site for the heroin. Judge Peter Benson told the defendants: “This was an extremely sophisticated operation, operating for some time and capable of producing vast profits, as well as flooding the streets of Bradford with heroin and crack cocaine.” With a street value in the millions, evidence was also shown in court of a ‘dealer list’ which had Ali’s thumb print on, showing drugs worth more than £420,000 had been traded in one month alone. “That demonstrates the scale of this operation in which you were all involved,” Judge Benson added. Prosecutor David Dixon said the conspiracy lasted at least eight months in 2012. Mr Dixon said: “This was a commercial and carefully run drugs factory guaranteeing substantial financial rewards. It was a substantial and sustained conspiracy.” A fourth man, Abbas Khan, is also wanted in connection with the conspiracy, and fled when police raided the unit. Anybody with any information in regards to the whereabouts of Khan is asked to contact the police on 101. Detective Inspector Jon Key, of West Yorkshire Police's Organised Crime Unit, said after the sentencing: “This was clearly a significant seizure initiated by local Neighbourhood Police officers acting on community intelligence and we would like to thank the Crown Prosecution Service for their support and our colleagues in the Republic of Moldova for their assistance in this operation. “In addition to the sentences passed down today, we will also be pursuing confiscations of the

Buyer Beware

T

he recent Court of Appeal case of Lloyd v Browning serves as a cautionary reminder to both buyers and sellers of land of the effect of non-reliance clauses. It is common practice in contracts for the sale of land to include a clause whereby the buyer is unable to rely on any pre-contractual statements made by the seller to allege that that induced them to purchase the land. Ordinarily only written replies between the parties’ solicitors can be relied upon by the buyer. In this case, the buyer entered into a contract to buy a barn believing that there was planning permission to use the barn as a dwelling and also for a proposed extension to the barn. This was due to the fact that in several meetings between the buyer and the seller prior to the exchange of contracts, the plans produced by the seller showed the extension. However, those plans related to an earlier planning application by the seller which had been refused and there was in fact no planning permission for the extension. Further it would not have been possible to obtain such permission as the proposed extension was contrary to local planning policy. The seller was aware that the buyer wanted to build an extension and that this was not covered by the planning permission that had been granted. The buyer wanted to exchange contracts quickly and told their solicitors that planning permission had been dealt with by their planning consultant and the buyer’s solicitors therefore did not include planning enquiries in their pre-contract enquiries. The Court found that although the seller had misrepresented the property

Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or by email at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

and that misrepresentation had induced the buyer into entering into the contract to buy the property, the contract for the sale of the property included a nonreliance clause limiting reliance on representations to those made in writing between the parties’ solicitors. The Court confirmed that had the buyer wished to rely on the pre-contractual statement made by the seller, they could have acquired written confirmation from the seller’s solicitors. Contract law states that non-reliance clauses are only valid if they are fair and reasonable. The Court held that the clause was reasonable because both parties had been legally advised during the transaction and they had equal bargaining power. Further the clause could have been defeated by the buyer’s solicitors dealing with the planning permission point in correspondence. Instead the buyer who was in a hurry to complete had deliberately decided to proceed knowing that they had incomplete planning information. This case highlights the need for buyers and sellers to advise their solicitors of any pre-contract negotiations to ensure that any significant issues are dealt with in correspondence between the solicitors. The case also shows the importance for buyers to undertake full and proper due diligence of properties before contracts are exchanged. Although this case concerns the sale of land, non-reliance clauses can commonly be found in contracts for the sale of goods and services. If you require advice in relation to such a clause or in relation to any contractual dispute then please contract Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or email him at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

New Delhi will not face blackout India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday told energy producer ‘NTPC Ltd’ to continue supplying power to New Delhi while it waits for money it is owed by a distribution company, avoiding a possible blackout in the country's capital. In an escalating battle over who should shoulder the rising cost of power in the city, distribution companies have said they cannot pay the money they owe whilst electricity tariffs are kept low and they suffer revenue shortfalls. State-run NTPC had threatened in February to cut off power supply to BSES Yamuna Power, one of the three distributors in Delhi, if the company did not pay its bill. But the Supreme Court reiterated that the energy provider must maintain power supply even while it is owed money, and ordered BSES, part of billionaire Anil Ambani's ‘Reliance Infrastructure Ltd’ to pay the dues it owes since 1st January 2014. It did not specify the amount BSES must pay. India's power sector, hobbled by rising debts and fuel supply shortages, has struggled to increase output to meet rising demand. Blackouts are common, hurting Asia's third-largest economy.

TANGLED: Hundreds of wires are scattered across the Delhi sky, with electricity in the country becoming a more and more controversial subject

APOLOGY Britain’s largest airline has been forced to apologise after running a controversial ad in recent days urging potential passengers to ‘Escape to the Indian Ocean’. British Airways has reportedly apologised over the running of the virtual ad in London’s Euston station where commuters where surprised to see the sign just days after the missing Malaysian flight MH370 was reported to be in the same ocean. The ad showed a sea of blue on screens throughout the station with the text, ‘Escape the commute and discover the Indian Ocean’. MISTIMED: British Airways latest ad, urging people to ‘escape to the Indian Ocean’ is set to be removed

A British Airways spokeswoman issued a statement saying that the airline was sorry for any offense caused and the advertisement campaign was being withdrawn. The spokesperson added that the campaign was planned some months ago and the airways did not recognise that its appearance at this time was inappropriate. “To those saying this picture is a fake, it's not,” wrote the photo's original poster on Reddit. “It's a video ad currently running on the escalators at Euston station in London.” The missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, carrying 239 passengers aboard had disappeared on 8th March and is believed to have crashed somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

stars Week starting 4/4/14

with

SNEH JOSHI

ARIES March 21st - April 20th Your self-confidence is riding high and at times totally misplaced. It's good to be positive and optimistic but it can be destructive when you don't listen to others and always think that you are right. This can lead to a fall in grace, so it is important to become a little more humble. Travel to far off lands are indicated. TAURUS

April 21st - May 21th Although there are very intense amorous energies indicated in your chart, the trouble is that these are likely to be marred by feelings of jealousy. Do not therefore dabble in anything that could harbour such negative potential, as it is bound to end in heartache. Existing emotional differences can be sorted out now.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st An exchange of opinions ought to prove very enlivening at this time. An influence that should help to enjoy the 'nicer' side of others brings out the best in friends and partners alike. A wind of change may be in the air; attention should turn to the wider world and benefits come from broadening of horizons and mental stimuli. CANCER June 22nd - July 22st Your urge towards greater freedom and independence is very strongly accentuated. In intimate affairs, the prospect appears entirely favourable. In work matters you can expect a progressive phase. Efforts to bring about desirable changes in your working life are more likely to be positive. LEO July 23st - August 23rd You will feel energetic and confident as the week begins. Your thinking is inspired, so listen to your thoughts. This may be a time of expansion and improved opportunity and it would be unwise to let yourself become complacent. A good time for restructuring and rethinking your aims and interests. Affairs of the heart are likely to flourish.

Britain may force standardised cigarette packets Britain looked set to force tobacco companies to standardise cigarette packaging after a government review this week, that the move would help cut smoking rates. Ministers were criticised for delaying a final decision. A review commissioned by the government in November showed "compelling" evidence that plain packaging would improve public health and cut the number of child smokers, junior health minister Jane Ellison said. "It is in my view highly likely that standardised packaging would serve to reduce the rate of children taking up smoking and implausible that it would increase the consumption of tobacco," Cyril Chantler, who conducted the review, said in a letter to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Draft regulations and the results of a short consultation would be published this month allowing the law to come into force by May 2015, the month of the next election, she said. The opposition Labour Party

welcomed steps towards a ban on branded cigarette packets, but criticised the government for delaying a final decision by holding a consultation. Labour health spokeswoman Luciana Berger said there was an overwhelming body of evidence in favour of standardised packaging and there was no excuse for further delays. "Over 70,000 children will have taken up smoking since the government announced the review," she told parliament. "How many more children are going to take up smoking before this government takes firm and decisive action?" Tobacco firms say the move would encourage counterfeiting and smuggling and have little effect on smoking rates. Britain's tobacco market is worth about $28 billion a year, according to Euromonitor International, and Britain collected 8.56 billion pounds ($14.24 billion) in duty on cigarettes last year. If the government sticks to its resolve, Britain would be following

Australia, which in 2012 brought in laws forcing cigarettes to be sold in plain green packaging with graphic images showing the damaging health effects of smoking. New Zealand and Ireland have said they will introduce standardised packaging too. Shares in the two big Londonlisted tobacco companies, Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco both dropped by about 0.5 percent on the government statement. "You can only look at Australia who have had plain packaging for over a year. What you see is increased illicit cigarettes and consumers down-trading and neither of those things are particularly positive for the tobacco industry," Panmure analyst Damian McNeela said. In Australia, the government has been criticised for not doing enough to defend the merits of its packaging legislation and the debate over whether the ban has worked has suffered from a lack of hard data.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd This is a good time to cut back on extravagant spending and consolidate your finances. Your social calendar is likely to keep you very busy and you will have lots of opportunities to promote yourself. For some of you this is also a good time to meet like-minded people which could lead to romantic liaisons. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd The pattern of significant relationships in your life will continue to favour you. It seems that a great deal of mutual benefit will accrue because of various interactions. The underlying trend indicates that deep creative energies are stirring within you and that seemingly insignificant events will play a vital role in the future enrichment of life. SCORPIO

October 24th - November 22nd Don't be afraid to act forcefully if your instinct tells you it's time for change. This week the focus is your house of family and home. Besides spending more time tending to domestic affairs, the focus can be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations, so to speak.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - December 21st It's time when experience will enable you to enrich your inner mind and personality. You are moving into a new phase of life which will bring wider scope for developing your unique qualities and talents. You are likely to move around more than usual. Life will become very lively and there will be a lot of social interactions.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - January 20th Life appears to be focusing your mind on practical matters. So you will need to organise your time carefully if you are to avoid an "all work and no play" situation. Resist making any hasty moves when it come to finances - this is a time to focus on consolidation of current assets.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - February 19th Love and close personal relationships will occupy the centre of your attention this week. With Venus remaining in your sign, any emotional tensions will be smoothed out easily and harmony will prevail. On a purely practical note, you can expect your financial affairs to take a turn for the better.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th You are likely to be lucky in terms of opportunities and meetings with helpful persons. Whatever you are aiming to achieve at this time will suddenly take a leap onto a new level. If you are hoping to move up the ladder of success, this is definitely a time to be on the alert for new openings.

‘Flood Hero’

AWARD: Zafar Ahmad was given a special award for his work helping flood-hit parts of the country

A teenager from Southfields has been labelled a ‘hero’ and given a £5,000 prize live on television after his work with the flood relief efforts in the UK. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad was presented with the ‘Flood Hero’ award, alongside four other people, on ITV’s Daybreak earlier this week before being given a cash prize, by Sir Richard Branson, to go towards his chosen charity. During the most recent half term holidays in February, Zafar made the most of his free time and volunteered for a flood relief campaign, joining hundreds of volunteers in assisting families affected by the floods around the country. The young volunteer spent almost every day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Jamal Akbar, one of the coordinators for a regional charity, was so moved by Zafar's selflessness that he put his name forward for this special recognition. “In my mind, everyone who helped out with the flood relief efforts is a flood hero, whether they are from our own community, the local residents, the Army or the local Sikh community who helped in Staines,” he said. “The reason I nominated Zafar was because of his selfless dedication of time and his passion to just get out there and help in whatever capacity he could. “I don’t know many 16-year-olds who would do that during their holidays. I’m very proud that he got through as there were over 120 nominations across the country.” Zafar added: “It was a humbling experience to see those who are affected, but I am glad that the communities quickly came together to help. “I don't consider what I did to be special, but simply fulfilment of my religious duty as a British Muslim to serve my country. Nevertheless, I greatly appreciate this award, ITV for highlighting the floods and the kindness of Mr. Richard Branson. “I hope those people affected can get back to their normal life soon. We all have a duty to help them.” Zafar has also now been invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street with his fellow award winners in recognition of their tremendous work, yet his volunteering efforts don’t stop there. Later this year, on the 4th May, he will be participating in a annual 10K run in Battersea Park, and you can help sponsor him by visiting www.justgiving.com/ZafarAhmad-2014.

Shrien Dewani to be extradited to South Africa to face charges over his wife’s murder By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Shrien Dewani will be extradited to South Africa on 8th April to face trial over the honeymoon murder of his wife, the South African government said earlier this week. Dewani, who lost the latest appeal in his threeyear battle against extradition in March, could appear in court on the same day he arrives in the country. The extradition date has been confirmed by South Africa's department for Justice. Dewani will now face charges over the murder of his wife Anni, who was found shot dead in an abandoned taxi in Cape Town's Gugulethu township in November 2010. He has denied prosecutors' claims that he arranged his new wife's death. His lawyers had argued that he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, and is too ill to stand trial. But in the High Court earlier this month, three judges rejected any further appeals in British courts against his extradition. The care home owner could have lodged a lastditch appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to block his exit, but lawyers had warned that the chances of success were slim. Speaking before the announcement by the South African government, Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Rodney de Kock said: "We

are in contact with Mr Dewani's lawyers about his return to South Africa. "I cannot speak for his side but it appears that they are not pursuing the European option." Prosecutors believe that Dewani, 33, paid the hijackers who later shot dead Anni, 28, in the back of their taxi after Dewani had been ejected from the vehicle. Three men in South Africa have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death, including the taxi driver Zola Tongo, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Shrien Dewani faces charges over the murder of his wife Anni whilst on honeymoon in South Africa

Anni's uncle, Ashok Hindocha, said: "All we have ever wanted is answers to what happened and justice for Anni. "We know who killed her but we don't know why so we hope he will get better and be able to answer those questions in court. This whole process has been prolonged by his defence team which has been hard but we got there in the end. "We have had tremendous support throughout this from people from around the world and especially South Africa. "I'd like to thank them and hope we can get justice for Anni." The South African authorities have given a number of assurances to their British counterparts that Dewani will receive good hospital and psychiatric care when he arrives in Cape Town. He is likely to be sent to Valkenberg Hospital in the city where he will have his own room and access to top psychiatrists. As part of the extradition agreement, the South Africans have agreed Dewani can return to the UK within 18 months of his arrival if he is not fit enough to stand trial.

Gay bank worker killed wife and incinerated her body By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A bank worker strangled his wife and burnt her body in a garden incinerator, just months after marrying her to hide his sexuality, a court has heard. Jasvir Ram Ginday is alleged to have told a neighbour he had set fire to ‘general rubbish’ after killing Varkha Rani at their home in Walsall, West Midlands. Opening the case against Ginday, who denies murder but has admitted manslaughter, prosecutor Deborah Gould alleged that the 29year-old had tried to destroy his wife's body. Jurors, who were warned that they may find aspects of the case distressing, heard that Ginday was arrested in September last year after police discovered the unrecognisable remains of his wife at their home in Walsall. A bank worker, who married to conceal his homosexuality, strangled his wife a few months later with a metal vacuum pipe, a court heard on

Wednesday. The defendant had travelled with his mother to India to find a bride and met several women before a match-maker known to both families introduced him to Miss Rani. He went through with arranged marriage to please his parents and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in India last March. Prosecutor Debbie Gould told a jury the couple became engaged ‘at the end of a meeting which lasted several hours’, with Miss Rani’s family believing Ginday to be ‘a perfect match for their intelligent, well-educated, and attractive young daughter’. Rani, 24, married her eventual killer in India in March last year and moved to the UK to live with him in August after being granted a visa. Claiming that Ginday had told a friend he was attracted to men in his university study group as early as 2008, Gould told jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court: "Despite his sexual orientation, in October 2012 the defendant and his mother travelled to India to find him a wife.

“While he was there the defendant met and rejected several women before meeting Varkha Rani. “No doubt to Varkha's family the defendant appeared to be a perfect match for their intelligent, welleducated, and attractive young daughter.” After her arrival in the UK on 10th August, Varkha was ‘in all senses a stranger in a strange land’ and appeared to be isolated, friendless and alone. Meanwhile, Gould told the court, the defendant was ‘staring reality in the face’ and would have had to explain any attempt to divorce his new bride. Around a month before Varkha's death on 12th September last year, someone at the family home made an internet search for incinerators, the court heard. Ginday initially told police his wife had walked out on him after ‘using’ him to gain entry to the UK. But, the crown alleges, Ginday had bought a quantity of petrol and put his wife in the incinerator after strangling her with a metal pipe from a vacuum cleaner.

April 2014 - 1st Edition

Jasvir Ram Ginday is alleged to have married to ‘conceal his homosexuality and please his parents’

Gould added: “His ultimate intention, the crown suggests, was to play the role of victim safe in the knowledge that he could rely upon his married status as a permanent excuse for never having to have another relationship with a woman.” Ginday, who is alleged to have married to ‘conceal his homosexuality and please his parents’, has also admitted perverting the course of justice by lying to police. Miss Rani’s father, Surjit Singh

told the jury he had no idea his sonin-law was gay, and didn’t even know what the term meant. He said through an interpreter that he had been ‘shocked and distressed’ after British police had explained it to him. He added: ‘Of course I wouldn’t have let her marry him if I had known. I have never heard of it before. No, Varkha didn’t know about gay either.’ The trial continues.

CHARGED: Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf salutes as he is escorted by military personnel on his arrival at an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad

A Special Court in Pakistan has charged former military ruler Pervez Musharraf with high treason - a crime that carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. Musharraf, who ruled the country following a 1999 coup until 2008, faced a total of five charges during the hearing at the court in Islamabad Monday, including three counts of subverting, suspending and changing the country's constitution, sacking Pakistan's chief justice and imposing emergency rule. He pleaded "not guilty" to each of the charges. In an address to the court, the former president denied he was a traitor, and instead claimed Pakistan "prospered and grew" under his tenure. More than 1,000 security forces guarded a special court in Pakistan’s capital on Monday as former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was finally indicted on treason charges. The hearing took place on March 31st amid tight security, with thousands of police and security forces lining the route to the court. In an unexpected twist, the retired army general was represented by a new lawyer, with no reason yet given for the change. Musharraf went into self-imposed exile in 2008, in London and more recently in Dubai, after standing down as president. He returned to Pakistan last year with the aim of running in the country's national elections. But his plans unraveled as he became

Musharraf charged with high treason

entangled in a web of court cases relating to his time in power. In 2007, Musharraf declared a state of emergency, suspended Pakistan's constitution, replaced the chief judge and blacked out independent TV outlets. Musharraf said he did so to stabilize the country and to fight rising Islamist extremism. The action drew sharp criticism from the United States and democracy advocates. Pakistanis openly called for his removal. Under pressure from the West, Musharraf later lifted the state of emergency and called elections in which his party fared badly. Musharraf stepped down in August 2008 after the governing coalition began taking steps to impeach him. Prosecutors say Musharraf violated Pakistan's constitution by imposing the state of emergency. In January, Musharraf was unable to attend another court hearing after being hospitalized. Asiya Ishaq, a supporter and leader of the All Pakistan Muslim League, said the former president had been feeling pressure in his chest and was not well. Pakistan media has reported he has been receiving treatment for high blood pressure. Musharraf is also on an "exit control list" in Pakistan, which prevents him leaving the country, although Akram Shaikh, the prosecutor in the case, said Monday that if the court allows the 70year old to travel abroad then he has no objection. Pakistan media has reported that Musharraf's mother is currently in critical condition in a hospital in the UAE, and that he has requested permission to visit her.

Drug Bust British would-be drug smuggler, sentenced to life in Pakistan prison with her baby

PRISON: Khadija Shah, pictured with her 16-month-old daughter, Malaika, claims she didn’t know there were any drugs in her luggage

A British woman has been handed a life imprisonment by a court in Pakistan for attempting to smuggle 63kg of heroin out of the country. 26-year-old Khadija Shah, from Birmingham, was arrested in May 2012 after the drugs were found in her luggage when she was about to board a plane from Islamabad airport. Pregnant at the time, Shah, who also has two other children, aged four and five, will remain in the country’s prison with her youngest child, Malaika, who was born whilst she was in custody. Malaika, now 16-monthsold, will continue to grow up in the prison as she has done for all her life and her mother said if it wasn’t for her, she would have gone crazy. Speaking to Vice, she said: “If Malaika was not here, I would be crazy because things are very hard… she

keeps me strong.” “I am still breastthree feeding…every months Prisoners Abroad give me some money for basic food items and Pampers for the baby, who I keep clean. “She likes to play with empty wrappers of food items. I usually try to keep our surroundings clean, too.” The mother claims she had no idea what was inside the luggage and had been used by a third party with the drugs hidden in her suitcase, not to her knowledge. She claimed a man, named in court as Imran Khan, brought her, and her two children at the time, to the country and spoilt them with all expenses paid to gain her trust. On return to the UK, Khan reportedly gave Shah two suitcases, claiming they were for a friend’s daughter who was getting married.

Now a not-for-profit organisation, Reprieve, has called on the British government to help Khadija to appeal against her sentence. Maya Foa, director of Reprieve's Death Penalty team, said: “This is a terrible outcome for Khadija and her baby Malaika. As happens in hundreds of cases, she was used as a drugs mule without her knowledge, and yet is facing life in a Pakistani prison. “The UK government must ensure that Khadija gets the urgent assistance she needs to appeal her sentence so that her baby doesn't grow up behind bars.” The mother and daughter are currently being held in Adiala jail, in Rawalpindi, where some of Pakistan’s most notorious terrorists are based.

HOME TIME: British troops will finally be brought home from Afghanistan at the end of this year after more than a decade of combat in the country

British troops ‘historical’ withdrawal from Afghanistan

‘We’re outta here’ In what has been titled an ‘historic moment’ for the British involvement in Afghanistan, troops have finally been withdrawn from all but two of their bases in the Helmand Province. At its peak, more than 10,000 personnel from the British Forces were involved in the area, covering 137 bases yet that number has more than halved with the closures. At Camp Price, more than 2,000 soldiers were once based there, but that number was most recently down to approximately 200 soldiers, tasked with protecting engineers who are closing the base. Only Camp Bastion, which remains the main base for UK personnel, and Observation Post Sterga 2

are now under UK control. British troops are officially due to end their combat role at the end of 2014, 13 years after entering the country, yet the withdrawal of personnel began more than six months ago as the process got underway. Soldiers are reportedly delighted that the day has finally arrived, with the Afghanistan saga taking the lives of 448 British soldiers since the first fatality in 2002. Around 50% of British equipment has already been removed from Afghanistan as the force is gradually reduced ahead of the December deadline. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said on Monday: “The handover and closure of our bases across

Helmand underlines the progress UK forces have made to increase security and stability across the province but also to build up the capability of the Afghan forces who will carry that work forward. “UK combat operations will cease by the end of this year but our support for the Afghan people will continue. Meanwhile, our troops will continue the mammoth task of getting our people and equipment home by Christmas.” Almost all the British bases in Helmand have either been dismantled or handed over to Afghan forces, the Lashkar Gah, which opened in 2006 and was the former headquarters of British military forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistani girl forcibly married twice, gang raped and stripped naked in public to avenge brother’s elopement

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A young woman in Pakistan’s Punjab province was allegedly kidnapped and forcibly married twice before being gang raped and stripped naked in revenge for her brother having eloped with a girl from a different caste. A man named Sanaullah, 22, had eloped with the daughter of a man in the Chiniot district, after the families refused to allow them to marry. The eloped girl’s family called a village council meeting which decreed that Sanaullah’s sister would have to marry Zahid Ali, brother of the girl who had run away with Sanaullah. Following the decision of the village council, a person said to be Zahid’s accomplice kidnapped Sanaullah’s sister from her house and married her — only to divorce her after five days. Later, Zahid and his family married her to

Zahid’s cousin Noor Ahmad. After some days, four members of Zahid’s family gang raped her and subjected her to torture. They stripped her naked, tied her to a tree in the village and called her parents to get their daughter back in return for their girl. The family brought the girl back, a month after her alleged abduction. The girl approached the Lalian Tehsil magistrate, who ordered her medical examination and registration of a case. Chiniot Deputy Police Officer Munir Zia confirmed a Panchayat (village council) had forced the victim to marry Zahid to avenge the act of her brother in February but neither she nor did her family approach the police for registering a case. The girl submitted an application to the police on Monday and an FIR of kidnap and rape had been registered with Mohammadwala police station.

Pakistan PM frees 16 ‘Taliban’ prisoners

Pakistan has freed at least 16 Taliban prisoners with the approval of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in a move designed to invigorate a shaky peace process with the militant group. Sharif's office later released a statement saying those freed had been involved in petty crimes and were not strictly Taliban prisoners. The Pakistani Taliban called a one-month ceasefire on March 1 but said this week they would not extend the truce because the government was not serious about meeting their demands. The demands include releasing 800 prisoners the insurgent group describes as innocent family members and withdrawing the army from parts of the semi-autonomous tribal

areas along the border with Afghanistan. Sharif, who took power last year promising to strike a negotiated peace with the Taliban, has been trying to engage the militants, who want to topple his government and enforce severe Islamic law. The political agent of South Waziristan, the highest government official in the northwestern tribal region, said the government had started releasing non-combatant prisoners to boost the reconciliation efforts. All the released prisoners belonged to the Mehsud tribe, a major Pashtun tribe living in South Waziristan. Another 100 prisoners on the Taliban's list were being processed and would be released in the next few days, it’s been disclosed.

Turkey lifts ban on Twitter

Turkey's telecoms authority lifted a twoweek-old ban on Twitter on Thursday April 3rd, after the constitutional court ruled the block breached freedom of expression, an official in Prime Minister Tayyip

Erdogan's office said. Access to Twitter had been blocked in the run-up to last Sunday's local elections, after a stream of leaked wiretapped recordings of senior officials appeared on the site.

Search continues for missing Malaysian plane More than three weeks have now passed since the Malaysian Airline flight MH370 went missing, and the search continues to find what is expected to be the wreckage of the aircraft. With such little data to analyse, the search has spanned thousands of kilometres with the most recent belief that it had come down in the Indian Ocean. Search teams have been scouring the waters and earlier this week changed the area of search, 700 miles northeast, after it was believed that the plane was travelling faster when it crashed in the ocean, meaning it was using fuel faster.

‘Colourful objects’ were reportedly spotted in the area of water by five planes yet nothing has been confirmed as to what they were. “Photographic imagery of these objects was captured and will be assessed overnight. The objects cannot be verified or discounted as being from MH370 until they are relocated and recovered by ships,” AMSA said in a statement. Ships are not expected to reach the area until Saturday as the wait for an answer continues for the anxious family members of the passengers aboard the plane. Many questions still surround the missing plane and how it got diverted from

its original route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on the 8th March. With an area covering millions of square kilometres, some have criticised the Australian Maritime Safety Authority for looking in the wrong place for so long, yet AMSA General Director John Young defended previous search efforts. “This actually happens to us all the time,” he said of the re-focused search. “New information will emerge out of sequence with the investigation itself. “There will be a significant amount of random dispersion of objects, so the search area steadily gets bigger with time.”

Indonesia will pay $1.8m (£1m) in blood money to prevent an Indonesian maid being executed in Saudi Arabia. The maid, known as Satinah, was due to be beheaded in the next few days after being found guilty of murdering her female employer seven years ago. A campaign in Indonesia by the 41-yearold's family and supporters had raised some of the money needed to compensate the victim's family. The Indonesian government has now decided to provide the rest. Satinah hit her female boss, Nura al-Garib, in September 2007. Her employer fell into a coma and died later in hospital. After the attack, Satinah fled with nearly 40,000 riyals ($10,700), but was caught. In her defence, she

claimed that her employer had treated her badly. Satinah said she had only hit her boss because she had grabbed her hair and banged her head against a wall. The campaign to raise the blood money in Indonesia involved politicians, celebrities and civil society organisations. The victim's family reduced the amount needed but, just days before the execution was due to take place, not enough had been raised. An Indonesian official told the a media source that the government had then decided to pay the remainder. He said that Satinah now faces a retrial. But not everyone in Indonesia supports the move. Some do not believe public money should be used to spare someone convicted of murder.

New funny man on the block By Anush Ansari

anush@asianexpress.co.uk

There’s a new funny man on the block who’s rapidly building a pretty decent bank of fans and respectable reputation in the world of stand up comedy. 29-year-old Aatif Nawaz from Wembley, to the complete horror of his close friends and family, left his

stable well-paying job in IT to try his hand at making audiences laugh. Having toured The Netherlands, Ghana and Pakistan whilst performing alongside the likes of Shazia Mirza, Omid Djalili and several other comedy veterans, Aatif is quickly become one of the most popular British-Asian comics in the UK.

COMIC STARDOM: Zayn Malik inspires new Ghost Rider

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford pop sensation Zayn Malik is all set to become immortalised as a comic superhero by the creators behind X-Men, The Avengers and Spiderman. With the comic-book-style ‘ZAP’ tattoo on his right arm, it transpires that the East Bowling lad is a huge comics fan, collecting them when he can, and is constantly on the doodle wherever he goes. The One Direction superstar recently visited Marvel Studios headquarters in Los Angeles, California, to ask illustrators for advice on drawing his own characters.

IMMORTALISED: Zayn has inspired Marvel to create a new angry-faced ‘Ghost Rider’ character

Now, it seems that he’s inspired them to recreate and resurrect the former ‘Ghost Rider’ - a Marvel character created in the

SUPERHERO: The new ‘Robbie Reyes’ character features Zayn’s boyish looks and former trademark sriped hair

Convinced that people would relate and warm to his refreshing take on ‘desi’ life and his twist of social and cultural observations, Aatif says that Asian audiences today are different to what they used to be. “Gone are the days when comedians could get away with just wise cracks on stereotypes of Asian people and repeating stuff which is resonant of ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ days,” says Aatif speaking to the Asian Express. “Audiences are smarter now and much more wised-up on stand-up comedy, and so the material has to be new, well thoughtthrough and completely, completely original.” Encouraged by the response from an all sell out debut 60-minute show in January, Aatif, earlier this month returned to the Leicester Square Theatre for more riproaring antics. His performance titled ‘Talk Roti To Me’, written by himself, tells the hilarious tale of a British-Pakistani’s journey to the world of stand-up comedy. A trained actor, Aatif has also made appearances in several commercials and television shows. He has had small roles in

Mark Austin's ‘Real Crime’ and ‘Peep Show’. As a bilingual actor, Aatif has also appeared in the Urdu-language series ‘Lehrein’ and the Urdu-language film ‘Majboor’. He has also written, directed and starred in the Urdu series 'Bahir Waalay' which was broadcast in the UK. In 2012, Aatif won an Honourable Mention Laural at the Los Angeles Movie Awards for his documentary ‘Postcards from Lahore’. The film also holds the distinction of being the only Pakistani film to be screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Aatif currently hosts a comedy talk show entitled ‘The Aatif Nawaz Show’ for TV Apex, the programme was nominated for two MOMO (Music of Muslim Orientation) Awards for Best Television Presenter and Best TV Show. Now Aatif is currently in discussions with various theatres and venues about taking his show on the road, specifically in Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Leeds. He’s also involved with a independent British film project which we will keep you posted on. Watch this space…

early 1970s. The old ‘Ghost Rider’ is a stunt motorcyclist called ‘Johnny Blaze’ who after his death in a spectacular bike accident, strikes a deal with the devil to come back to Earth. His return is in the form of the fiery-headed Ghost Rider who tracks down evil souls. Now the new crimefighting character named ‘Robbie Reyes’ is a chiseled cheekboned, angry-faced version of Zayn with his former signature-style stripy hair, and has a huge passion for fast cars. He drives a souped-up motor and has a particular loathing of violent thugs and gangs. Word is that the new superhero comic will hit the shelves later this year.

Kumar Sanu to make Dubai island may have a Bollywood bidder at $19m

Bollywood celebrities always had keen interest in the property market and many have made huge investments in this sector over the years. Now we hear that one of our leading Bollywood celebs will soon be the proud owner of a luxurious private island in Dubai. Apparently the said celebrity, whose name is being carefully kept away from the limelight, is in talks to

potentially buy a $19m manmade island off the coast of Dubai for use as a private resort. The said island which is part of The Royal Island Beach Club, the first development to open on Dubai developer Nakheel's world islands project, is being sold for AED70m ($19.06m) is one of several islands to go on the market. The sale, includes the entire 419,000 sqft (127 sqm)

Lebanon Island, which features a beach club, chalets, water sports, a "ready beach" and pool. The construction of the 300 artificial islands making up The World began in 2003 and finished in 2008. Interestingly apart from the Bollywood celebrity, the sale has also attracted a lot of interest from potential investors from Russia, Iran and Pakistan.

Juhi talks about her brother’s death Having had condolences pouring in from the Bollywood film fraternity, it seems Shah Rukh Khan has been constantly at Juhi’s side since the death of her brother Sanjiv aka ‘Bobby’ Chawla. Sanjiv had been the former CEO of Red Chillies Entertainment and was admitted to the hospital after a

massive stroke in 2010 and has been in coma since then. The actress, who is busy organising a prayer meet for her brother, expressed her grievance on Twitter as she wrote: "Seems like I'm dreaming all this... 11 days since my brother passed away..." Juhi has posted a video, which is a collection of clips on Sanjiv.

Ali Fazal to join Fast & Furious gang

The sudden death of Paul Walker had put a question mark on the future of ‘Fast & Furious 7’. Divulging these plans, Bollywood actor Ali Fazal says happily: "Yes, I will be joining the Fast & Furious gang soon. We have to finish the filming." Fazal, who has previously appeared in Hindi films including ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Always

Talking about the video, Juhi wrote: "And gone away so young... I brought in friends and family to speak of times spent together... and put together an audio visual of pictures. Have uploaded it... so friends and family can see themselves.... as a part of his journey.” Kabhi Kabhi’ and ‘Fukrey’, said that he had just a cameo role in ‘Fast & Furious 7’. It has now been announced by Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC) and Universal Pictures that the shooting of the film, which had been postponed after Walker's death in a car crash, would now be resumed with a schedule in Abu Dhabi. Though the dates have not been sent to Ali, he has been told to keep himself ready to leave for Abu Dhabi at the end of this month. Ali is also playing the romantic lead opposite Vidya Balan in upcoming ‘Bobby Jasoos’. Since he would be required in Mumbai for promoting the film, which is expected to release around June (date not yet firmed in) he is hoping that the shooting schedules of Fast & Furious 7 don't clash with his promotion of ‘Bobby Jasoos’.

his debut as an actor in YRF's project

Once upon a time he was the voice behind the most popular songs of Shah Rukh Khan, now, the singer has decided to explore the world of acting with the upcoming Yash Raj film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Excited about his role, Kumar Sanu claimed that he couldn't refuse the offer despite the fact that he is unaware of how long or short his role is. Apparently, the movie will see Ayushmann Khurrana stepping out in pursuit of meeting his idol Kumar Sanu and fulfills his wish at Haridwar. Kumar will soon fly to Haridwar to shoot for the film. Kumar will not only sing in the film but will also collaborate with Anu Malik as the duo plan to re-create the magic of the 90s music with this one.

And there was never any doubt about who she would marry, as her parents were keen to match her with Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) - the son of a close family friend.

FILM: Gulaab Gang DIRECTED BY: Soumik Sen GENRE: Social/Drama STAR CAST: Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Priyanka Bose, Vinitha Menon, Tanvi Rao

FILM: Total Siyapaa DIRECTED BY: Eshvar Nivas GENRE: Comedy/Drama STAR CAST: Ali Zafar, Yami Gautam, Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher, Sara Khan A young man’s desperate attempts to impress his girlfriend's family go hilariously awry in this madcap romantic comedy. Good-natured Pakistani boy Aman (Ali Zafar) is in love with beautiful Indian girl Asha (Yami Gautam). So much so that he has decided to travel to London to ask Asha's parents for her hand in marriage. Alas, her mum (Kiron Kher) and dad (Anupam Kher) are a deeply conservative couple. Everything goes swimmingly until they discover that daughter's handsome young suitor's nationality.

But as the wedding draws closer, Vijay drops a bombshell. He calls the whole thing off, citing a mismatch of interests and lifestyles. Devastated, Rani makes a bold decision. She opts to go on honeymoon alone, leaving the country for the very first time! Along the way, she learns more about the world - and herself. Vikas Bahl's spirited Hindi drama was filmed in 145 colourful locations, taking in European capitals Paris, Amsterdam and London.

12A

The story of Gulaab Gang is reportedly based on the life of Sampat Pal Devi, a self trained activist from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh who was married off as a child and then grew up to fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, domestic violence in the villages of India. In course of time, many women joined her and now she has a force of over 10,000 women who are called the Gulabi Gang. A few years back, with some help from a French NGO, Sampat's fight came into the limelight leading to media coverage and a documentary filmed on her. In the trailers, like we had assumed, Dixit kicks ass. She is shown wielding a baton with a ferocity normally associated with Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar. She is seen flinging men with one effortless slap. She is seen beating up men. Evidently, Sampat's story has been adapted to suit the requirements of a Bollywood entertainer. Likewise, Dixit is also seen dancing (we are not complaining one bit about that though!). However, what is probably the

most refreshing and interesting bit in the trailer is its villain - Juhi Chawla. Yes, you heard right. Juhi is indeed who Madhuri is pitted against in the film. And oh boy, isn't she delicious as the soft spoken, nearly-adorable, baby voiced woman whose smile is pure evil gold! Juhi seems to be playing the part of a politician who takes on Rajjo (Madhuri) and embarks on an insidious journey to destroy the latter's clout. What makes the film so much more interesting than anything else, is instead of a woman versus man stereotypical battle, Gulaab Gang promises to be a deft exploration of feminity and the woman as an ambitious, strong, sinister, vulnerable entity. While Madhuri turns out to be a real hero with all her brave action sequences, Juhi Chawla has also amazed people with her cunning politician avtar in the movie. With all those bold dialogues and action, the movie is going to be one of the valiant choices of both the Bollywood divas, as far as their filmy career is concerned.

Eats roads – drinks tea Scientists and engineers unveil the car that’s powered by tea-leaf biofuel Continued from page 74 Capable of covering up to 40 miles on a single cup, Cooper T certainly isn’t what you’d call thirsty. It boasts all the standard features you would expect, such

as VVT, ABS and DSC, but also benefits from DAT or Dunk Avoidance Technology. This ingenious filtration system stops peckish owners and opportunistic passersby from inserting biscuits into the Mini T’s fuel tank in order to moisten their snacks.

The revolutionary new model, which is available in a variety of colours including ‘Chamomile Yellow’, ‘Red Bush’ and ‘Earl Grey’, is expected to cause a real stir in the motor industry when it’s served up later this month. Head of Cooper T engineering, Dr. Ivana Kuppa, said, “This particular project has been brewing for years. Our extensive research has shown that the nation’s favourite drink is also an ideal biofuel. We already know good things come in small packages, but with Cooper T customers benefitting from up to 40 miles per cup, we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring this car to market.” For further information about the MINI Cooper T, visit MINI UK’s Facebook page at facebook.com/MINIUK.

‘World’s Fastest’ edition of Venom GT supercar

www.asianexpress.co.uk

April 2014 - 1st Edition

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

To celebrate hitting 270.49mph (435.31 km/h) and unofficially breaking the Guinness World record for fastest production car, the Texan carmaker is building three very special cars, each with a $1.25 million price tag. In February, a Venom GT took to the runway at the Kennedy Space Center and, with just a 3.2-mile track to play with, managed to break the 270mph barrier, beating the current world record, held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Its top speed of 269.86 mph (434.30kph) was set on a purpose-built track that includes a 5mile straight. To commemorate the achievement, Hennessey Performance is building three special editions of the Venom GT with a special paint finish designed to evoke the American flag. "The Venom GT is America's supercar and it broke 270 mph on the same runway where the Space Shuttle landed at the Kennedy Space Center," said company founder John Hennessey. "We wanted to offer a special paint scheme that would incorporate the colors of the

American flag -- the same flag we flew on the Space Shuttle runway. Thus, our special livery package includes a body in white with red and blue stripes." However, although Guinness recognizes the Venom GT as the world's fastest accelerating road car - it can go from 0-300km/h in 13.63 seconds -- despite video evidence, its claims to being the world's fastest production car are unofficial. For a road-going car to be officially acknowledged as the world's fastest, it must make a record-breaking run twice -- so the

average speed can be taken -- and it must be deemed to be a true production car. So, road legal, unmodified form a stock version and, crucially, be built in a production run of 30 examples or more. The Venom was only afforded a single run on the track, and because production is strictly limited to 29 examples, it doesn't technically qualify as a production car. But that doesn't mean that the car isn't ferociously fast. It's super-light, thanks to an aluminum and

Motors

carbon fiber body and is propelled forward by a 7-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers. The result is a car that weighs 1244kg and delivers 1244bhp, the magic ratio of 1bhp per kilogram. Currently, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport still officially holds the title of world's fastest production car. It can hit 269.86 mph (434.30km/h) but did so on Volkswagen's immense testing track which includes a 5-mile straight. Whether or not the company can hold on to the

record remains to be seen. Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg has just officially unveiled its latest creation, the Agera One:1. Like the Venom, it has the magic ratio of 1PS (metric horsepower) per kg (1340 of each I total) and, the company claims it is good for "at least" 273mph. All the company needs now is a long enough runway to prove it. RECORD BREAKER: Hennessey Performance celebrate hitting 270.49mph barrier with the Venom GT supercar

Volkswagen XL1 to go on display By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

The world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid car, the Volkswagen XL1, will go on display in the Design Museum in London alongside other examples of design excellence and Designs of the Year award nominees from a range of disciplines from this week until 25 August. Now in its seventh year, the Designs of the Year exhibition gathers together cutting-edge innovation and original talent, showcasing the very best in global Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphic, Product and Transport design. The Volkswagen XL1 features in the Transport category, and was nominated for the exhibition by author and automotive design and technology expert, Andrew Nahum, whose publications include ‘Fifty Cars That Changed The World’. Designed by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen brand, the XL1 is a limited series production two-seater car that explores the limits of energy efficiency for a road-legal production vehicle. The design brief for the XL1 was to produce a ‘one litre’ car – that is to say, a car that uses one litre of fuel per 100 km, equivalent to 282 miles per gallon. The resulting vehicle uses just 0.9 litres per 100 km, or 313 mpg, and this high mpg figure correlates to a very low carbon dioxide emissions value of just 21 g/km. To achieve this fuel consumption figure, the XL1 was aerodynamically optimised, adopting the classic ‘tear drop’ shape and utilising innovations such as removing traditional wing mirrors and replacing them with small cameras called e-Mirrors which transmit exterior images From May 2014, all new Volvo models will have the option to be built with engines from the new Drive-E powertrain family – offering a world-class blend of drivability and low CO2 emissions. The CO2 emissions of the 190 hp Volvo V40 D4 with manual gearbox are down to an outstanding 99 g/km (74.3 mpg) – a no compromise of power and efficiency that no competitor can match. Also available in the V40 Cross Country, CO2 emissions are just 104 g/km (70.6 mpg). “The outstanding take-off and responsiveness of the Drive-E engines, combined with a smooth engine sound, will make the cars even more fun to drive, without compromising on modern customers’ demand for superb fuel economy and minimised CO2emissions,” says Michael Fleiss, Vice President Powertrain at Volvo Car Group. The new D4 will also be available to order with Volvo’s new 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox, a combination of great drivability and efficiency means the V40 emissions are just 109 g/km (67.3 mpg) while the V40 Cross Country produces just 112

to interior displays. With a drag coefficient of 0.189 the XL1 can maintain 100 kmh on a level road in still air using just 8.4 PS. The super-innovative XL1 looks like a vision of the future, while its drivetrain melds a two-cylinder 48 PS 800 cc diesel engine with a 27 PS electric motor. Power is served through a seven-speed triple clutch transmission. Like any good supercar, it is also low (just 1,282 mm high) and features scissor-opening wing doors. The XL1 is ‘handcrafted’ using small series production processes at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück factory in Germany. For the required combination of lightness and strength, its body is made largely of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer. Approximately 30 XL1 vehicles are expected to find homes in the UK. The Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum is a reflection of everything that is current and exciting in the world. Alongside the Volkswagen

XL1, it features, among other items, Kate Moss’s favourite app, a floating school in a Nigerian lagoon, friendly lamp posts and a mobile phone you can build yourself. Exhibits come from a variety of sources including international design stars such as Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield and Miuccia Prada, as well as crowd-funded start-ups and student projects. Visitors to the Design Museum will be able to pick their favourite design from the exhibition. New for 2014 is the Social Vote which sees two nominations fight it out each day through the exhibition’s online platforms, and broadcast to over one million of the museum’s Twitter and Facebook followers. For more details on the XL1, please visit www.volkswagen.co.uk. To find out more about the Designs of the Year exhibition and to purchase tickets, go to www.designmuseum.org.

New Drive-E powertrain for V40 g/km (65.7 mpg) of CO2. Also joining the new D4 in the V40 is the 245hp T5 FWD (front-wheel-drive) from the new Drive-E engine family. Fitted as standard with the new 8-speed automatic gearbox, CO2 emissions have decreased to just 137 g/km (representing a £350 saving on vehicle tax from the previous T5), giving fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 47.9 mpg. The D4 and T5 are available to order now, however production start of the D4 will be September. Improved Infotainment with more cloud based possibilities All new Volvo models can now be equipped with the updated on-board infotainment and navigation experience Sensus Connect, offering customers a fully connected car. First seen in the S60, V60 and XC60, the cloudbased services allow the driver to find and pay for parking, discover new restaurants at the destination, stream favourite music seamlessly and much

more. The HERE Location Platform provides connected navigation with 3D maps. The V40 and V40 Cross Country are available to order with two brand new colours, Osmium Grey and Power Blue. To complement the existing alloy wheel offering, a new 17” Spider and 18” Tamesis alloy wheel for the V40 and 19” Damara alloy wheel for the V40 Cross Country are now available. The interior of the S60, V60 and XC60 can be enriched with a new piano black wood interior trim while the XC60 can be specified with a new exterior colour of Power Blue. Sensus Connect with High Performance and Sensus Navigation is now fitted as standard across the entire specification range in the V70, XC70 and S80. This complements an already high standard specification level to offer customers a luxurious and soothing experience. Volvo’s Inscription range gives customers the opportunity for individuality while benefitting from enhanced features. It includes Inscription Soft Leather upholstery, beautiful leather covered instrument panel, premium deco inlays, soft leather on extended surfaces such as the back of seats, centre armrest and head rest, which also features an embroidered Inscription logo. Available from this model year is a new Inscription Dark Walnut interior trim, available on the V70, S80 and XC70. The additional exterior Inscription options include three colour alternatives – Crystal White Pearl, Electric Silver and Ember Black as well as 19-inch and 20-inch ten-spoke wheels.

‘Step down Srinivasan’

STEP-DOWN: Cricketers and club officials want to see time called on Srinivasan’s tenure as BCCI President

KICKBOXERS: More than 50 children turned up on the day to compete in the AFK tournament with all competitors coming away with trophies

Kickboxing kids Bradford’s kickboxing stars of the future took part in the third annual AFK tournament last weekend with more than 50 children turning up to showcase their talents. Students aged from five through to 15, from the Azhar Farooq Kickboxing classes, competed in front of friends and family at Bradford’s Lapage Primary School. Competing in five different categories, based on height, the children worked through the knockout tournaments to determine each groups eventual winner, with every martial artist coming away with some sort of trophy. Sponsored by Auto Prestige, the tournament was the biggest to date and founder, Azhar Farooq, said he was delighted to see such talent emerging in his local city. “I was really pleased to be able to have the opportunity to let these children demonstrate their skills in front of their parents and

all of them did themselves proud,” he explained. “To step up on to what is a big stage for some of these children, and none of them froze or struggled, it was really good to see.” Seven-year-old kickboxing prodigy, Esa Hussain, picked up second place in his height division after unfortunately losing out in the sudden death final. Despite a somewhat controversial ending, his father, Amjed, said he was always proud of seeing his son compete. “I’m always very proud of Esa and his achievements and he worked really hard before this latest event,” he said. “He was unlucky not to win the tournament and maybe deserved more but there are still many more victories for him in the near future.” Esa added: “It went really good. It was a bit nervewrecking in front of the

crowd but I did my best and did a lot of practice before. “I’m still happy at coming second but could have been first.” Event organiser, Azhar, added that he always believes kickboxing is much more than just winning or losing, and is a way of helping children gain confidence and stay away from bad habits. “The main thing for me is the children enjoy themselves,” he said. “If this kind of activity is helping to keep kids off the street and instead helping them engage with health and fitness, it is only a good thing. “I want to thank all the parents for coming down and helping out and Mr Zaman from Lapage Primary School for allowing us to hold this tournament at his school.”

Calls for BCCI President to be ousted as IPL reputation is on the line After the IPL was rocked last year by the infamous match-fixing scandal, calls are now being made by former players for BCCI President, N Srinivasan to quit. The Supreme Court (SC) had earlier suggested that the industrialist should step down from his post as to allow a fair probe into the incidents which have threatened to destroy the sport’s reputation in India. A bench, headed by Justice A K Patnaik, said on Tuesday that there are ‘very, very serious’ allegations made in a report handed to a courtappointed probe panel and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted. Former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath said that Srinivasan should now step down whilst former BCCI administrator, and Rajasthan Cricket Association president, Kishore Rungta, also joined the chorus. Srinivasan also faced heat from within the board as BCCI vice-president Shivlal Yadav said they will follow Supreme Court's suggestion. “SC has given the order, nobody can challenge it. We have to accept it. Since the SC has given an order, there is no question of going back on it or giving an opinion on that. “It has to be carried out in total and BCCI will have to follow whatever the Apex Court has given,” Yadav said.

Asked if he was willing to do the duty, he said, “Absolutely, I am ready to accept any responsibility given to me.” Former cricketer Amarnath, a member of 1983 World Cup winning team, added that the ‘game was bigger than an individual’ and Srinivasan should step down in the interest of Indian cricket. “In the interest of the game, one should step aside and let the enquiry go on,” he said. “As a lover of the game, he should step down. “He should respect the law and he should honour what Supreme Court has suggested. Let's see how it goes.” Rungta was also highly critical of Srinivasan, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of placing bets on his IPL team Chennai Super Kings. “I am happy that Supreme Court has asked him to resign. This was absolute arrogance that he was continuing as president of the BCCI,” Rungta said. “The conduct committee (earlier) had said no Board member would indulge directly or indirectly with the game (IPL team). An Exception was made for Srinivasan, which was wrong. I wish Supreme Court had taken a view at that time.” Srinivasan had initially stepped down from his role in June 2013, yet was re-elected to the president position in September, much to the disapproval of many stakeholders.

Nishikori

In what is becoming a somewhat unwanted common sight for the former world number one, Roger Federer was once again knocked out of a tournament at the hands of Kei Nishikori. The tireless Nishikori shocked 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer 3-6 7-5 64 on Wednesday to claim his second top five scalp in two days and reach the semifinals of the Sony Open. After knocking off fourth seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer, in a three-hour marathon on Tuesday, the 21st ranked Japanese was forced to go the distance again, surviving a two-hour centre court battle with Federer. Nishikori has been one of Federer's few bogeymen, having now gotten the better of the Swiss maestro in two of their three career meetings. “I thought I really played well, especially in the third,” Nishikori said after his exhausting victory. “I was hitting both deep and striking well. Everything was going well. “There was couple of tough moments, but

Japanese dark horse topples Federer… again BATTLER: Kei Nishikori defeated Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Miami Masters, taking his record against the Swiss legend to two victories and just one defeat

I was fighting through and happy to win today.” Arriving in south Florida, riding the momentum from a finals appearance at Indian Wells, Federer had been in superb form, cruising into the Miami quarter-finals without dropping a set. He had even clinched a fourth round win over Richard Gasquet in just 49 minutes with the Swiss looking like the player crowds around the world have come to love. A two-time Miami champion, Federer convincingly won the opening set and looked ready for an easy night when he twice went up a break in the second. But each time, the feisty Nishikori would immediately answer back and then broke Federer again at 6-5 to level the match. With the third set heading towards a tiebreak it was Federer who blinked while serving to stay in the match at 5-4, slamming an easy forehand into the net and then sending a return long to hand Nishikori triple match point. Federer would survive the first two but could not save the third, Nishikori whipping a forehand winner off the return to seal the upset. “I just couldn't find my rhythm on the serve today,” Federer said. “It was surprising especially after how well I have served and played this week. “I had the set and a break and up a break again so it is a little frustrating. He was more consistent in the second and third so all credit to him.”

All ‘HALE’ the Centurion

Alex Hales became the first Englishman to score a Twenty20 International century as the 2010 champions kept alive their World Cup semi-final hopes with a dramatic six-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Thursday. Hales smashed six sixes in his unbeaten 116 off 64 balls, the final one vanishing over mid-wicket in the last over. Victory also means it was England's highest-ever run chase with four balls to spare after being set a huge target of 190 in the Group One Super 10 clash. “Centuries in this format do not come along very often,” Hales, who shared the record for England's previous highest T20 score of 99 with Luke Wright, said at the presentation ceremony. “[I’ve been] a couple of times in the 90s, I'm very pleased to go over the line today” England captain Stuart Broad was also full of praise for his team mate and put the performance up with one of the best he has ever seen. “On the biggest stage in a World Cup, in conditions a little bit foreign to us, it's one of the best knocks I've ever seen,” Broad said.

Back page story continued Having already cancelled his December clash with Devon Alexander, and in turn losing the chance to pick up a World Championship, the Brit was forced to find a new opponent. Step forward, WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo. The man who suffered a split decision defeat in Ricky Hatton’s Welterweight debut will take on Khan in his weight class bow, next month in Las Vegas on the undercard of the Mayweather and Maidana fight. It will have been more than a year since Khan stepped foot in the ring when he appears in Vegas on the 3rd May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, yet he says he is determined to prove himself worthy of a match-up with Mayweather. “I’m looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas once again, and my intention…is to make a statement that I belong on this big stage,” said Khan. “Luis Collazo might be coming off of a big win, but I am in incredible shape and am ready for this challenge. A win on 3rd May

is what I need to prove that I truly am one of the best welterweights in the sport.” Victory over the Brooklyn native Collazo, who has 35 victories (18KO) and five losses, would surely put Khan back in the sights of Mayweather yet he insists the potential match will only happen when he is ready. “I do regret a few things and I should have taken the [Devon] Alexander fight because I’d have been a world champion now,” said Khan. “Then the Mayweather fight fell through. I should have got one more fight in and it’s a mistake that I will never make again. “Mayweather decided not to take the fight with me, probably because he thought I would be the first to take away his unbeaten record, and is now fighting somebody I’ve already beaten. I think the fight with Mayweather will happen one day but I’m not rushing and it will happen when I’m ready. “I’ve spoken to Floyd on the phone and he’s told me it’s nothing personal and he still wants to fight me. The whole thing has improved me physically and mentally and I am ready to come back.”

Before anything can even begin to materialise for Khan’s future matches he must first overcome the tricky obstacle which is Collazo. Having taken nearly two years off from the ring, the welterweight champ made his return in 2011, and has won five of six bouts, including four straight. This past January, he made the statement of a lifetime with a blistering second-round knockout victory over favoured, former world champion Victor Ortiz, and he says he has similar plans for Khan in May. “Defeating Victor Ortiz in January was just the beginning,” said Collazo. “Facing and beating Amir Khan on the biggest stage in the sport is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “I will take full advantage of this and put myself in the best position to face the winner of the main event. I hope Khan is ready because Brooklyn is coming to take him down.” Amir Khan will take on Luis Collazo on the 3rd May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, in what is sure to be one of the most anticipated ‘undercards’ of recent memory.

CENTURY: Alex Hales wrote his name in the history books earlier this week as he became England’s first player to hit 100 in a Twenty20 international

The King’s Comeback Khan to fight Collazo on Vegas undercard

WE NEED YOU!

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

When Amir ‘King’ Khan’s shot at a blockbuster bout against Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather was finally dismissed, the Bolton boxer was left in limbo, with no match, no million-pound contract, and no idea what was going on. Khan had topped a fan’s poll to see who Mayweather should fight next yet it was the impressive Marcos Maidana who got the shot after a convincing victory over Adrien Broner in December.
