Thursday 7th July 2005 will forever be a date etched in the history books of Britain as 52 innocent lives were lost after four suicide bomb attacks in the capital. This past week marked ten years on from that tragic day, with the nation paying their respects to the victims with a minute silence staged across the country. In Leeds, home to three of the four suicide bombers, civic and community leaders gathered at Civic Hall for a special non-denominational event. Timed to coincide with the national remembrance ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, the service was led by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Judith Chapman, and Leeds City SPEECH: Hanif Malik, chief executive of the Hamara Centre, said Leeds and Beeston’s response to the attacks highlight that the incidents were ‘not reflective’ of the community

The city representatives spoke of how the destructive acts committed by the terrorists, who targeted rush-hour tube stations and a bus, were entirely at odds with the spirit of community and cohesion in what, for some of the perpetrators, was their home city. The Lord Mayor praised Leed’s resident’s response as they continue to ‘stand side-by-side’ in the fight against terrorism. “We stand in solidarity with the city of London in commemorating these tragic events,” she said. “Three of the perpetrators came from Leeds, yet they knew nothing of the values of this city or of tolerance, respect and democracy. “We know we stand side-by-side with the people of Leeds in opposition to terrorism and we stand side by side in having tolerance and respect for each other.” Cllr Blake added: “We are clear that we will not allow such terrible acts of violence to divert us from our values of tolerance and understanding: values that very much form the basis of this city and its diverse communities. “It’s important, therefore, to today focus on the positive work we have done, and will continue to do, to tackle and prevent extremism in this city.” Cllr Blake referenced the current and ongoing impact of terrorism across the world, including the recent atrocity in Tunisia as 38 tourists, 30 of them British, were massacred on a beach by gunmen. Outlining some of the positive work that has taken place in Leeds to combat extremism, she added: “People of all faiths, as well as those with no faith, know what is right and wrong. “Terrorism is always wrong. We condemn the 7/7 attacks and our sympathy, support and solidarity is with the victims, the survivors and their families. “We will remain focused on ensuring Leeds is seen by all as a welcoming and compassionate city.” Also speaking at the event was Hanif Malik, chief executive of the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston. Having worked in the community where two of the four bombers lived prior to the attacks, he outlined his feelings about how the local community has come together and been strengthened as it heals from the impact of the tragic events. “Ten years on from the atrocity of the 7/7 attacks, we all vividly recall our shock and horror at discovering that Leeds was linked to the tragic events,” he said. “However, we are also able to recall the dignified and united response from all sections of our communities in ensuring that we remained resolute in not allowing the actions of a few to disrupt the cohesive nature of our home city. “People of all faiths and backgrounds have stood together over the past decade in undertaking collaborative work to further strengthen our strong relationships and in being determined to highlight that the incident is not reflective of our community. “Our sympathies today are with the families of those who lost loved ones and we stand united in condemning the attacks on the 7th July 2005 and indeed all such atrocities carried out in the name of faith.” As the speeches concluded, the Ark Royal Room at Leeds Civic Hall, where the commemoration event was held, then fell quiet as a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims, timed to coincide with the national silence.

When an award winning community champion was diagnosed with Leukaemia earlier this year, it forced him to cancel plans for a charity trek through the Alps. However, determined not to let cancer overtake his fundraising goals, Kamal Aftab decided he would set up his own unique fundraiser, all from within his hospital room. Unable to fast during the month of Ramadan due to illness, the nationally voted ‘2014 Volunteer of the Year’, says he still wanted to sacrifice something and so opted to complete the first ever ‘Hospital Marathon’. “I will be completing a 26 mile walk in my five-metre square hospital room, walking side to side, armed with just a pedometer and a smile,” he said. “The chemotherapy has different results every day, sometimes you feel fine and others you don’t want to leave your bed.

“I needed something to keep me occupied and motivated throughout my treatment. That is when we came up with the idea of a ‘marathon in a room’. “I can do it in my own time, in this confined space, and have so far completed three miles.”

A group of children from a Bradford madrassa handed over a cheque worth more than £3,000 to charity last week, after undertaking a number of fundraising activities over Ramadan. Clement’s Gate Madrassa, located inside Lister Mills, currently cares for around 50 children in two separate after-school classes from Monday to Thursday every week. Throughout the Islamic holy month, the youngsters were tasked with raising funds for a cause they had chosen and after much deliberation, it was people in Nepal and Africa who were selected to benefit from the funds. After two weeks of sponsored challenges – ranging from half-day fasts to giving up sweets or television for a week, alongside bake and toy sales, a total of £3,020 was raised. Shafeen Majid is manager at Clement’s Gate and helps spearhead the fundraising campaign every year in aid of a different charity. This year, the Penny Appeal was chosen as it supports both Africa and Nepal, with the cheque handover taking place last week on Thursday 9th July. “It was a fantastic day and the children have done amazingly well to raise so much money,” Ms Majid said. “From the day they selected their causes, they have overseen the fundraisers and we never imagined that they would be able to raise so much money. “Initially we were just going to hold a bake sale once a week, but their enthusiasm resulted in them bringing things in every day. There were certainly some busy mums over the past couple of weeks.” On Thursday, during the handover event, the class were joined by guest speaker, Sonam Bahalla.

children Sonam has recently returned from Nepal and spoke of the devastating impact the two earthquakes have had on the country, reinforcing the importance of the fundraising the children had undertaken. “To see the children responding to Sonam was lovely,” Ms Majid added. “They got to hear about where the money they had raised was going and that only helped inspire them even more.” The cheque was presented to Penny Appeal representative, Khalil Benkhalil, who praised the efforts of all the children, and explained who would benefit from the funds. “Our motto at Penny Appeal is ‘small change big difference’ and these children have done their small change and more,” he said. “The money they raised will supply meals to people in Africa through our ‘feed our world’ project. In Nepal it will help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, and hydrate the thirsty.” He added: “For the kids to raise so much money not only empowers them but the community and we saw how much they cared for the two causes.”

The InTouch Foundation is currently collecting cards for a young boy named Matthew Arnold, from Nottinghamshire, who, despite inviting his 28 classmates to a party, was set to celebrate with just two after a lack of replies. The youngster suffers from ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), Developmental Delay and possible Oro Motor Dysfunction, and due to finding communication difficult at times, often struggles to make friends.

Now, the InTouch Communities team are calling on everyone to write a card and send it to Matthew for his big day to wish him a ‘Happy Birthday’. Bilal Shah, a volunteer with the InTouch Foundation, first heard about Matthew’s situation on Facebook and after contacting the family, arranged for the appeal to begin. “I got in touch with Matthew’s sister first of all via a Facebook group two weeks ago to say I wanted to send a birthday card down,” Bilal explained. “I then told the team at InTouch about the situation and

we came up with the idea to send a whole mass of cards to show there are people out there who care. “Kids should not be alienated because of a disability and that is why we are so committed to this appeal.” Matthew’s birthday falls on Thursday 16th July and the card appeal is calling on people to post theirs prior to Wednesday 15th with a message inside. Sam Naaz, volunteer manager at InTouch, has already signed her card for the young child and urged other members of the public to get involved with the

Bradford teenager who planned to join IS jailed

www.asianexpress.co.uk A radicalised Bradford teenager with ‘chilling’ extremist views has been detained for planning to travel to Syria to fight with the so-called Islamic State. The Old Bailey heard the only reason British-born 19-year-old Syed Choudhury, who admitted to engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist act, did not go was because he could not find someone to travel with. Originally from Bradford, Choudhury was living with his aunt in Cardiff and attending the Cardiff and Vale College. The court heard how in July 2014, Choudhury took part in a demonstration in Cardiff protesting about the conflict in Gaza. He carried a banner proclaiming his support for Islamic State, which brought him to the attention of anti-terrorism officers and was arrested 16th November after being spotted by a local anti-terror officer. He was due to go on trial on Wednesday 8th July at the Old Bailey, but changed his plea after the jury had been sworn in. Abdul Iqbal QC, defending, said the evidence showed Choudhury's enthusiasm to travel to Turkey or Syria, but said that Choudhury had not got further than making inquiries. "There are no direct links with anyone in the area of Turkey or Syria who could assist him," he said. "Naivety, immaturity and lack of insight are the hallmarks of his character," Mr Iqbal said. But while in custody, he had

The court heard Choudhury had been radicalised by people he regarded as elders after he left home to study in Cardiff. He will serve three years, four months at a young offenders' institution.

Creating a better Leeds

TOGETHER Leeds Citizens launches in front of packed crowd As the nation paid its respects to those lives lost in the London Bombings ten years ago, a new people’s alliance was officially launched in Leeds last week to coincide with the landmark anniversary. On Tuesday 7th July, over 650 people from faith, education and civil society organisations came together for the Founding Assembly of Leeds Citizens. The group is a branch of the national community organising charity, Citizens UK, and involves individuals from across society working together for a better Leeds. After raising £65,000 of local funding, from membership dues and founding partner contributions, the group employed a professional Community Organiser to support the work. Over the past six months, a listening campaign has been run by members across different communities aimed at building relationships and managing campaigns to tackle poverty, improve mental health services and overhaul the bus network. Last week’s event, held at Elland Road’s Centenary Pavilion, was the official launch of Leeds Citizens and called upon local decision makers to pledge their commitments to work with the alliance on a range of proposals to improve life in the city.

Tom Chigbo, community organiser with Leeds Citizens, hailed the event a ‘tremendous success’ and hoped to see the group flourish in the city over the coming months. “Leeds Citizens is not an idea that has come about overnight, rather we have been working with Citizens UK for almost three years now, to develop this alliance,” he said.

Director of First West Yorkshire, committed to working with Leeds Citizens to improve the frequency of bus services and introduce a ‘Bus Covenant’ to promote mutual respect and good behaviour on buses by the end of 2015. Finally, Chris Butler, Chief Executive of Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, endorsed the campaign to

provide 'navigators' for people accessing mental health services and create new culturally sensitive care for the elderly. “Receiving these commitments to work with us from senior officials is exactly why we launched this group,” Mr Chigbo added. “I hope more people will follow their example and we can improve our communities and cohesion in the city.” As the event coincided with the 7/7 anniversary, 15 young people of different faiths and backgrounds were also recognised on the night with the title ‘Peace Ambassadors’ for their work in advance of the assembly, to build relationships, including a ‘Journey of Peace’ to London. The trip, which mirrored the route taken by the three Leedsbased bombers, saw the young people visit the 7/7 memorial site, meet survivors and relatives of the bombings, and the Somali Bravanese Community. Shammah Gwedegwe, one of the Peace Ambassadors, simply described the trip by saying: “We are not retracing their steps, but replacing them with a Journey of Peace.” The Founding Assembly closed with a community iftaar where all attendees were invited to join the attending Muslims in breaking their fast for that evening.

Bradford crime fighter is top of class in West Yorkshire

A prospective police officer from Bradford showed she certainly possesses the skills for the job in future years after picking up a county-wide award earlier this month. Maria Hussain, from Bradford Moor, was named both the ‘Bradford Explorer of the Year’ and ‘Overall Explorer of the Year’ at the West Yorkshire Police Explorers Awards on Wednesday 1st July. Having partaken in the explorers group over the past 12 months, the 18-year-old was selected from 150 fellow participants to scoop the top award, and was joined by six others to be named her region’s top ‘Explorer’. Doing ‘much more than just PCSO work’, Maria explained what she had been doing with the

group over the past year and how shocked she was to receive two awards. “When they read out my name on the night I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “To win both awards is something I never expected and there were celebrations all around in my family. “During my time with the Explorers I have learnt so much more about the police, looking at different aspects from fire arms support to the dogs unit. “We are not just police community support officers (PCSOs), rather we explore more in depth about the police. It is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to pursue a career in the police and opens up doors to a whole new world. “Because of my experiences with the Explorers I know that I want to work in the fire arms department and the best way to achieve my goals.” Maria received her award from

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark BurnsWilliamson and Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins. Open to young crime fighters aged between 16 and 18, the programme aims to inspire young people and give them an exciting, behind-the-scenes look into 21st century policing. Mr Burns-Williamson commended all those who had been recognised at the ceremony for their ‘determination’ and ‘understanding’ of their roles as explorers. “I congratulate each and every young Explorer who has received a Certificate of Achievement which demonstrates how well they have worked on the programme,” he said. “Programmes such as these are crucial because these young people could become the future talent of West Yorkshire Police. “It is important that we treat all young people as citizens, valuing their interests and opinions as much as any other group in the community, and this programme provides a great insight for those interested in a policing career. “They have now developed an understanding of West Yorkshire Police and their talent and determination has been recognised.” Simon Phillips, who coordinates the Explorers programme, added: “This is the culmination of a year of hard work and dedication by young people who, we hope, will be the future of West Yorkshire Police. “The awards evening provides the opportunity to recognise and reward individual and group achievements and for senior members of West Yorkshire Police to engage with young people from across the community. “Although Explorers has come to an end, we hope that many will continue to work with us as Volunteers, Specials, PCSOs and Police Officers.”

The image of gowns blowing in the wind and caps being thrown in the air returned last week as the graduation season arrived in its classic style, with Kirklees College kicking off the celebrations. On Tuesday 30th June, students gathered at Dewsbury Town Hall to receive their certificates from college principal Peter McCann, Principal June Durrant and chair of governors Geoff Alvy. Extradition granted for Beeston attacker Would-be murderer set to stand trial at Magistrates Court A suspect detained in Slovakia over the attempted murder and rape of a woman in Beeston, Leeds, has been extradited back to the UK this week. Slovakian authorities arrested the man last month after working with the National Crime Agency and confirmed he could be brought back to the UK to stand trial. Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, from West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said they have been pursuing the legal process to get the man extradited since his arrest. He previously stated: “Once the warrant was granted, we liaised with the Slovakian police through the National Crime Agency to secure the arrest of this man. “We are very grateful to the Slovakian authorities for their assistance.” He added this week: “The 21-year-old,

who was arrested from the Kosice area of Slovakia on 4th June, is due to be brought back to the UK later this week. “[He] is expected to be charged and to appear before magistrates.” Earlier this year, on Friday 6th March, the 18-year-old victim was attacked as she waited at a bus stop in Beeston Road, near to the junction with Tempest Road. ‘The spandex cat has left the building’ Bradford West MP makes maiden speech in Commons

The election race for the Bradford West parliamentary seat was one of the most publicised in the country, with Labour’s Naz Shah eventually coming out victorious to oust Respect leader George Galloway. Despite the eventual large margin of victory, it was an election which Ms Shah herself described as ‘one of the most vile and personalised’ campaigns ever seen in the country, and one which was tipped to be much closer by some. This past week, the new Bradford West MP has made her maiden speech in the House of Commons. Speaking in front of her peers, she said: “Being a member of this House in itself is a real honour and privilege we all share, but to earn the trust of people who you grew up with against a backdrop of one of the most vile and personalised election campaigns ever seen in Great Britain gives me just that little bit extra broader smile while standing here today.”

Speaking about Mr Galloway, she continued: “I have many words but sadly only a few pleasant ones. “My predecessor was, and I am told, a great orator. The sad truth is the only words he ever directed towards me were misogynistic, vitriolic, very dangerous, and to quote him, only ever had a fleeting relationship with the truth. “However it would be most unwise of me not to compliment his sensational acting abilities. “Not forgetting, as

It’s an ‘honour’ Doctorates awarded across West Yorkshire

An international arbitration director, a trade union president and a community champion are amongst the selected individuals this year who will receive Honorary Doctorates from local universities. The academic award is bestowed upon a recipient, by a university, without completion of the normal requirements for that degree. Amongst this year’s list is Sundra Rajoo - the Director of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, who previously graduated with a Masters degree in Construction Law and Arbitration from Leeds Beckett. He will receive his Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the School of Built Environment and Engineering on Thursday 23rd July, for his contribution to law. Speaking ahead of the ceremony, he commented: “I am honoured and delighted by my alma mater’s decision to confer this honorary degree on me. “My university years at Leeds Metropolitan as it was called back then, were some of the fondest of my life and set me on a path leading to self-discovery, introspection, fulfilment and success.” Mr Rajoo has degrees in five different academic disciplines spanning ‘Housing, Building and Planning’, ‘Architecture’, ‘Town

Planning’, ‘Construction Law and Arbitration’ and ‘Philosophy in Law’, and has served the Malaysian arbitral landscape with great distinction. MISSING Police appeal for information over whereabouts of Wakefield man SEARCH: Mahdi Danesh has not been heard from since 25th June

Police are appealing for information to trace a man who has gone missing from home his in Wakefield. Mahdi Danesh, aged 32, from Pinderfields Road, was last spoken to over the phone at noon on 25th June and was reported missing three days later. He is Iranian and is described as being 6ft tall, slim, with black crew cut hair and dark brown eyes.

PC Sam Farr, of Wakefield District Police, said: “It is out of character for him to go missing like this and there are genuine concerns for his welfare. “We would urgently like to hear from anyone who has seen him or who knows his current whereabouts.” Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Havertop Lane via 101.

Sex offender sentenced to seven years in jail A paedophile from Halifax has been jailed for seven years after being found guilty of numerous counts of sexual abuse against a teenage girl. 33-year-old Mohammed Ajaib, of Knight Street, was found guilty by a jury at Bradford Crown Court last week after previously denying his role in the abuse of the complainant. After a three hour deliberation, he was found guilty on 12 charges relating to various kinds of sexual assault. Judge David Hatton QC placed a restraining order on Ajaib which will ban him from ever having any contact with the victim again. He was also told that he would have to register as a sex offender with the

police for the rest of his life. Prosecutor, Peter Hampton, read aloud an impact statement provided by the complainant, who cannot be identified due to legal reasons, in which she said she now feels she cannot trust anyone. It added that the victim now felt like ‘an outsider’ following the assault. Ajaib, who speaks little English, was assisted throughout the five-day trial by an interpreter and his barrister, Frida Hussain. The latter said after the guilty verdict had been read out that the defendant would now be enduring a period of real isolation while in custody, as his family still lived in Pakistan.

Originally from Syria, Raja has never been to Saudi Arabia and has lived in Leeds for the past four years with her husband, after fleeing her war torn home. Upon being released from Yarl’s Wood, she thanked all the people who had supported her, and praised ‘the people of Britain’. “Today I feel I was born,” she said. “I feel that I have my freedom and life thanks to the British people - all my friends and all those who I have never met but who supported my case and spoke out for me. “I run out of words to tell you how much I thank you. I have great respect and warm love to every one of you. “My message is to all my friends and to the world that the people of Britain respect and know what freedom, justice and human rights mean. “Having been detained and imprisoned I personally feel what freedom is. My dream is that all those countries round the world could have the same freedoms to campaign for justice and human rights that you have shown that you have used so well. “May God bless and protect the

people of this country who have shown me love, respect and have given me my freedom and justice.” Raja and Mahmoud are currently working with their legal team at Simpson Millar as the fight against their ongoing deportation order continues. Despite the deportation being turned down last week following a hearing at the immigration tribunal, specialist immigration solicitor, Emma Brooksbank, says the case is not yet over. She explained: “We now begin the process of seeking permission for Judicial Review of the decision to deport Raja and Mahmoud. “The process is by no means over, but we’re satisfied with the progress we’ve made so far and to have the support of more than 100,000 signatories to their petition on Change.org gives us a real boost that people share our resolve.”

‘Save adult education’ Protestors gather to campaign against government cuts

‘Stop cuts to education’ was the message being echoed on The Headrow earlier this week as around onehundred protestors gathered in Leeds to voice their concerns over government funding. Organised by the University and College Union (UCU), the visual demonstration was held from around midday on Tuesday 30th June, with teachers supported by students and members of the public. Amongst the crowd were sabbatical officers, Zahir Abbas and Shamrez Akhtar, from the Leeds City College Student’s Union. They joined the protest in support of adult education – one of the areas hardest hit by recent cuts. Zahir explained: “Everyone has a right to education and the government should not be making it harder for people over 18 to have access to learning. “We are here to show that we will not stand for this and unite with the people here today.” Since 2010, the adult skills budget, which funds non-academic learning and training (university-based), has been slashed by 40 per cent. As well as voicing concern over nationwide cuts, protests were also held outside Bradford College earlier in the

morning before joining the Leeds contingent later in the day. A dispute over cuts at the college resulted in staff demonstrating outside their Great Horton Road-based buildings in the morning. Two separate college strikes, at Barnsley and Mid-Cheshire, were called off at the eleventh hour after striking deals with the respected places of education. UCU general secretary Sally Hunt, said that strike action was always the last resort but supported the action of Bradford’s members. She said: “Colleges are experiencing some financial difficulties at the moment, but the answer is to work with us to explore all the options available – not axe staff. “We are pleased Barnsley and Mid Cheshire colleges responded positively today and strike action won’t be necessary there. “Members will be walking out at Bradford College though, and then making their way to Leeds for a regional rally in defence of further education. “Strike action is always a last resort but, in the face of redundancies and lost opportunities, members feel there is no other option.”

Fundraising trek to raise funds for young Leeds patients

A Bradford mother, whose daughter underwent a successful kidney transplant last year, is hoping to help other children currently undergoing dialysis by organising a sponsored walk. Najmah Iqbal has arranged for the event to take place later this month in an attempt to raise funds for families who are being treated at Leeds General Infirmary. Najmah’s daughter, Zayna, who suffers from global development delay, was first diagnosed with kidney disease in 2010 and eventually suffered complete renal failure two years later, forcing her to undergo dialysis three-to-four times a week. After an agonizing three years on the donor waiting list, a kidney was found for Zayna via a cadaveric donor just one week after her eighth birthday. Najmah says that although her ‘family’s prayers were answered’ she will never forget other children undergoing dialysis and is determined to help their whole families in whatever way she can. “Life on dialysis for children and their families is extremely challenging and emotional, your world is turned upside down,” she said. “It is difficult to relax or to go away for a break without the constant worry of blood tests, hospital appointments, dialysis sessions

to attend and above all the realisation that without dialysis our children wouldn't survive. “Not all people have family networks or support in place. Therefore, we would like to give some happiness to these amazing children and families, by raising money for the children who are still on dialysis or recently have undergone kidney transplants. “The money raised will be used to send the children and their family for overnight breaks or a day trip. Please give generously and let’s create some happy memories for these incredible children.” Zayna’s story was first highlighted in the Asian Express Newspaper in 2013 after an appeal for an organ donor was successful just weeks after Zayna underwent her life changing surgery. Najmah says she was overwhelmed with the generosity of the public then and hoped people would get behind her latest fundraiser. “We as a family have seen first-hand how the hospital becomes your second home when your child is undergoing dialysis,” she added. “To be able to give people a break through a day away or shopping trip can be a huge help. I would ask everyone who is able to sponsor anything to do so, as every penny counts.” So far, over £800 has been raised by donations to the Just Giving page set up by Najmah.

Blind cancer survivor rewarded for his bravery

COMMENDED: Hasan Sankriwala has been named as a CHECT Champion for his ‘inspirational attitude’ after overcoming cancer

A 12-year old boy from Bradford has received a prestigious award in recognition of the courage he has shown while battling against a rare form of cancer. Hasan Sankriwala was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer which affects the retina of children predominantly under six-years-old, when he was just one. Sadly Hasan’s right eye had to be removed by doctors at the specialist Birmingham Children’s Hospital to save his life prior to undergoing chemotherapy. Although able initially to still see through his left eye, a detached retina has since left him with extremely limited overall vision and he is now registered blind. Despite everything Hasan, who attends Hanson Academy, rarely

complains and lives an active, happy life. He has even learned how to ride a bicycle and climb trees. In recognition of his outstanding efforts and bravery Hasan has now been named a CHECT Champion by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT). Two Bradford MPs showed their support for one of Ramadan’s most socially active grassroots campaigns last weekend as they praised the positive contribution of young British Muslims. The #Cakes4Syria campaign aims to raise funds for Islamic Relief’s ‘Syria Crisis Appeal’ by delivering £10 chocolate fudge cakes to people’s doorsteps around the country on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the holy Islamic month. The project provides local communities not only with a treat with which to break their fast, but also an enjoyable way for families to support those caught up in the Syrian crisis. The campaign has yet again proven to be a resounding success this year as within ten days over 2,500 cakes had been sold, raising in excess of £25,000 in the process. On Sunday 28th June, Bradford MPs Naz Shah and Imran Hussain visited the Cake Campaign HQ, in the city centre, to praise the work of the young fundraisers. Mrs Shah, MP for Bradford West said: “The #Cakes4Syria campaign is an incredible campaign that would not have come about if it were not for young people in Bradford and now across the country wanting to make a difference. “We hear on a daily basis about the tiny minority of Muslims who travel to Syria, but rarely do we hear about the thousands of young people who are channelling their concern for the victims of this brutal conflict through the vital support that charities provide. “We should be championing these young men and women and I hope people will join me in supporting this worthy cause by ordering a cake today.” Imran Hussain, MP for Bradford East, added his praise for the positive contribution from young British Muslims to society. “I am really happy to support this campaign,” he said. “In the holy month of Ramadan it is really heartening to hear about such a positive initiative driven by young people in Bradford. “At this time it is especially important that we celebrate the positive contributions that young Muslims are making and so I wholeheartedly applaud this initiative by #Cakes4Syria.” Since 2011 the Cake Campaign has expanded nationwide and gone from strength to strength. It now employs over

1,000 volunteers, delivers to more than 1,000 UK postcodes, and generates over one million social media interactions. Despite the success, officials from Islamic Relief say they are still concerned with negative connotations surrounding Muslims in the UK. Last week a YouGov poll - commissioned by the charity- revealed that the words most associated with Muslims were terrorist and terrorism. Zia Salik, Islamic Relief’s National Community Fundraising and Volunteer Manager, said she hoped initiatives like #Cakes4Syria would help show the ‘true heart of British Muslims’. “This campaign was born of young British Muslims wanting to make a positive change for the millions caught up in the Syrian crisis – which has left a staggering 16 million people in need of humanitarian aid,” he said. “Every day we are bombarded with stories about British Muslims being linked to terrorism, despite the numbers involved accounting for a tiny 0.02 per cent of the Muslim population. “I hope this initiative will really demonstrate the true heart of British Muslims. Like most people in Britain, we are appalled at the suffering of the Syrian people and want to help provide the food, shelter and medical aid they so desperately need.”

As Muslims across the world continue to fast throughout the holy month of Ramadan, iftaar events are bringing communities together as ‘bread is broken’ when the sun goes down. Last week, the first ever InTouch iftaars were held in Keighley and Bradford, with over 200 people turning out to support the local cause. Providing an opportunity for people to come together to break their fast, enjoy entertainment from renowned nasheed artists, and raise funds for the charity, it was deemed a huge success by organisers. Faisal Tariq is the UK Fundraising Manager for the InTouch Foundation. He said he was delighted with the turnout on both nights and explained the important role Ramadan plays in the Islamic faith. “We had an absolutely amazing response across both events,” he said. “In Bradford, the event sold out within a few days and there were around 130 people who attended. “This year Ramadan is challenging with long fasts. While we fast, we experience what it must be like for those in need and that was the message we wanted to get across. “We as Muslims, and people of Bradford and Keighley, have a responsibility to be ‘in touch’ with those in need and provide them with the life saving meals.” Across both nights, Imam Alyas Karmani was tasked with the role of host and reiterated the constant

message of ‘charity starts at home’, praising projects such as InTouch, and their mobile soup kitchen service. Footage of the charity’s work in the UK was also shown before Nasheed artists, Omar Esa and Ahmad Hussain, shared their melodious vocal talents with the crowds. Prior to the breaking of fast, those in attendance were asked to pledge a monthly donation to the charity which would help feed society’s most vulnerable across Bradford, Keighley and Leeds. With a number of pledges made, Faisal added that more meals can now be served up through InTouch and thanked all the people who helped make the iftaars a success. “I would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, the nasheed artists, our host and all those who attended as without them these events could never have happened,” he said. “We certainly had an amazing two nights. A special mention must go to two of our volunteers, who are not Muslims, after they fasted for a whole day before attending our event, to break their own fast with us.”

n a recent case, the Court of Appeal was asked to test the judgment of the first instance Court and to determine how to correctly assess damages when a defect had occurred but the contractor had performed the works done as per the contract and had met the industry required standard. In the first instance decision of MT Højgaard A/S –v- E.On Climate and Renewables UK Robin Rigg East Limited, the Contractor was held liable for damages to repair defects to the wind turbine foundations pursuant to E.On’s contractual specifications and to internationally held standards. The Contractor had originally agreed to carry out the design, installation and fabrication of 60 wind turbine foundations at the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm in Scotland for E.On. No negligence was found on the part of the Contractor, however, an error in the international standard meant that defects occurred, requiring remedial works to the sum of €26.25 million. A case of this type will almost certainly turn on its facts, therefore the Courts turned to the wording of the contract. In general, if the contract is worded sufficiently clearly the contractor will be liable for failing to achieve the result intended by the contract, even if the work complies with relevant standards. However, in this case the contract was not worded with sufficient clarity, the conditions contained no absolute obligation of quality and the contractor was required to achieve a design life of 20 years, not a lifetime guarantee. The technical requirements of the employer were that the design and fabrication meet international

standards, particularly regulation J101 for offshore wind turbines, and to demonstrate with test data and experimental verification that certain aspects of the design were appropriate. A defect occurred and the root cause of that defect was found to be the J101 international standard, rather than any negligence on the part of the contractor. Whilst at first-instance the contractor was held liable for the defect, the Court of Appeal allowed the Contractor’s appeal but also allowed the employer’s cross-appeal and awarded nominal damages of £10, this being far short of the €26.25 million which was the cost of the employer’s claim. The employer’s cross appeal was allowed as it was found the contractor should have tested the aspects of the design that were relevant to regulation J101. However, it upheld the decision by the first instance Judge that even if the contractor had performed those tests, it would have been unlikely to detect the defect. This case provides useful guidance on the Court’s approach to determining negligence in circumstances where a contract provides for specific requirements and industry standards. The contract will invariably be used as a starting point; however the guiding principles are to draw a clear distinction between what is stated in the contract as obligations that are absolute and those that are subject to reasonable skill and care. This judgment may allow increased scope for challenging the wording of contracts whereby an absolute obligation is deemed to be imposed.

Slammed Baroness Flather accused of bigotry over first cousin marriages in Pakistanis

CRITICISED: Baroness Flather claimed marriages between cousins caused 'appalling' disabilities among children and called for DNA testing between couples

After a debate on ethnic marriages, a British-Asian peer has been accused of bigotry after she claimed that marriages between first cousins in Pakistani communities were leading to ‘absolutely appalling’ disabilities among their children. The crossbencher Baroness Flather, who has described herself as a Hindu atheist, suggested that couples should be forced to take a DNA test prior to getting married. Lady Flather, the first female Asian peer, told the Lords: “There are a lot of first-cousin marriages in certain communities, particularly among Pakistanis who come from the Pakistani Kashmir area.”

Speaking to mainstream media, she added: “We know so much about DNA now, but there is so much disability among the children, which is absolutely appalling. You go to any such family and there will be four or five children, at least one or two of whom will have some disability. That is absolutely unacceptable, and if we cannot do anything about it, is it fair to the children?” The 81-year-old peer, who was born in the Pakistani city of Lahore said that it is not fair to the children that they should be allowed to become disabled because of a social/cultural practice. Lady Flather has also suggested that the halal method of

preparing meat should be banned. The baroness was rebuked by the Conservative peer, Lord Sheikh, who said parts of her speech were ‘unfair and irrelevant’ and ‘will not help community cohesion in this country’. The Muslim Council of Britain said she had ‘a bee in her bonnet about British Muslims generally and those of Asian heritage in particular’. It said: “Her consistent bigotry has unfortunately forfeited the right to be taken seriously.” In 2011 Lady Flather provoked anger when she suggested people in some minority communities had a large number of children in order to claim more benefits.

Brakes put on Jeremy Clarkson’s new ITV show The brakes have been put on plans for Jeremy Clarkson to take a new motoring show to ITV after it was revealed his old BBC contract stops him making a rival car show on another UK channel. A clause in his deal with the corporation, which came to an end after an internal inquiry found he had assaulted Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon, stops Clarkson and co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond from working on a similar show for two years. They are free to make a different kind of show for ITV, but are thought more likely to go to an online broadcaster such as Amazon or Netflix which are not covered by the clause. The BBC declined to comment on the nature of the men's contracts and is currently recruiting new faces to join Chris Evans on a revamped version of the show. Evans, who was unveiled as the new face of Top Gear last month, has called on the show's fans to apply for the job of co-

hosting it with him. The Radio 2 breakfast show DJ told candidates they needed to have an ‘appetite, hunger and need’ to host the motoring

The number of people living with diabetes has reached an all-time high - with tens of thousands of people in our region diagnosed with both type one and type two last year. The new figures announced at the start of Diabetes Week, have been extracted from official NHS data and shows an increase of more than 125,000 adults nationally compared to the previous year, bringing the total figure of diabetics in the UK to 3.9 million. Bradford has been identified as a hotspot for the disease with rates of diabetics higher than the national average. Health bosses in Bradford have said that diabetes is the city’s “biggest health problem” as the sharp rise in diabetes cases in recent years continues. Many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented – but there is no way of preventing Type 1. Diabetes education has come under criticism as health officials say not enough is being done to make people aware of the devastating health complications, including amputation, blindness and stroke that diabetes carries. Beyond the human suffering, diabetes costs the NHS nearly £10 billion, 80 per cent of which is spent on managing avoidable complications. Bridget Turner, Diabetes UK Director of Policy, said: “Over the last decade we have seen the number of people with diabetes rising at an alarming rate, and these latest figures are

a stark call to action – we must act now or face the very real danger of diabetes devastating the lives of even more people, and threatening to wreck the already over-burdened NHS. “There is a gaping hole when it comes to diabetes education because we know that most people newly diagnosed with diabetes are not offered a group education course. This is despite strong evidence that giving people the knowledge and skills to manage their diabetes effectively can reduce their long-term risk of complications. “We must get better at offering education to people who are living with diabetes and help them to manage this serious, complex and often overwhelming condition. It is crucial that education is made available both at the point of diagnosis and beyond, as the education needs of people already living with the condition can change over time. “Along with providing better and more flexible education options, local health systems need to focus on increasing the proportion of people getting the 15 healthcare essentials that everyone with diabetes should be receiving. Until we achieve these steps, we will continue to deny people living with diabetes of the best possible chance of living long and healthy lives. “This Diabetes Week, we are urging everyone with diabetes to seek out the support and education they need.”

The 10th anniversary of the 7th July 2005 attacks in London comes at a particularly gloomy time when we are mourning the loss of innocent British lives in Tunisia. Hoping to inspire unity, 15 young people from different faiths have traced the steps taken by three of the four 7/7 bombers, travelling 200 miles from Leeds to London to mark the landmark anniversary of the bombings. The Leeds Peace Ambassadors, a new initiative, brought together young people from different backgrounds from Leeds – a city that was home to three of the four bombers. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and those of no faith aged 18 to 25 laid flowers at King’s Cross and visited the Hyde Park memorial to the 52 victims of the attacks. They also visited Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London, which opened its doors to Muslims after the local Somali community centre was burned down , and learnt about Muslim-Jewish relations since. The group will relay their experiences at a community Iftar (breaking of the fast) on the 7th July at Elland Road football stadium - breaking bread together and sharing a meal as a symbolic gesture of the relationships that exist between the communities. Through sharing food, hearing stories and developing a plan for social action, community leaders hope the Ambassadors will develop confidence, leadership and understanding of different cultures. Qari Asim, Imam of the Makkah Masjid in Leeds, also took part in the trip and reflected on his memories of 7/7. “For me as a Yorkshireman and a Muslim, it was particularly sickening and painful that three young men from my dynamic city, Leeds, and belonging to my peace-loving faith had committed these appalling crimes,” he said. “The 10th anniversary is first and foremost about remembering those lives lost or changed forever. But it is also an important moment to reflect upon the last 10 years and how the threat of extremism is affecting us in Leeds and the British public. “The decade that has followed the 7/7 attacks has been an anxious one for Britain. But none of us want fear and hate to win. Even on the horrific day of 7/7, Leeds showed a magnanimous spirit; it was clear we would refuse to let terrorists win.”

The families of two of the British schoolgirls who went to Syria are ‘grieving’ as confirmed reports state that their daughters have married militants in the war-torn nation. The three east London schoolgirls, Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and Amira Abase, 15, fled Britain to join Islamic State on 17th February. After telling their parents they were going out for the day, the Bethnal Green Academy pupils boarded a flight from Gatwick to Turkey. They later entered Syria and are thought to be in Raqqa, the self-styled capital of the socalled Islamic State. The lawyer representing their families has confirmed the marriages of two of the girls. Tasnime Akunjee would not say which of the girls had married and said there was no information about the status of the third girl. He also confirmed that the two girls had contacted their parents to say they had been married to what they called ‘approved’ IS men in their 20s in ceremonies approved by IS authorities. Mr Akunjee said the girls had contacted their families ‘some weeks ago’ to tell them of the marriages, which took place ‘some time ago’. He added: “The families learned that the girls were not together in Raqqa three months ago, and it was because two of them were married. “They are distraught, because it doesn't bode well for their return. The girls are starting to grow roots socially, and deep roots.” He said the news had dashed any hopes the families may have had that their daughters might return. He added: “It has caused a lot of distress. “It entrenches their lives in Syria, rather than in Britain. “It erodes significantly hopes that they will come back.” The girls, who had been studying for their GCSEs at the school in Tower Hamlets, east London have been described as ‘straight-A students’, and are understood to be living separately in the IS stronghold of Raqqa. This has led Mr Akunjee to discount a video released online which claimed to show the three girls walking around the city carrying automatic rifles. He said that, at the time the video was shot, two of the girls were known to be married and separated from their east London friends. He added: “Those who are married are under the aegis of their husbands and are unlikely to be under the aegis of some woman leader.”

IS flag waved in London The topic of freedom of expression arose in the capital this past weekend after a father was pictured with his young daughter, waving the Islamic State flag outside the Houses of Parliament. The unidentified man, draped in the IS logo, was stopped and questioned by police, yet after being deemed not to have broken the law, was allowed to continue on his way. He was pictured outside Big Ben by tourists who vented their disbelief on social media, during the weekend before the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 terror attacks in London. The actions also came just over one week after IS claimed responsibility for the Tunisia beach shooting which resulted in the deaths of 38 people. Scotland Yard confirmed that officers spoke with the man regarding the Public Order Act 1986 yet no further action was taken. A spokesman added: “This man was spoken to by officers with consideration given to relevant legislation and a decision was taken by

officers at the time that the man was acting within the law. He was not arrested.' “Wearing, carrying or displaying of an emblem or flag, by itself, is not an offence unless; the way in which, or the circumstance in which, the emblem is worn, carried or displayed is such as to cause reasonable suspicion that the person is a supporter or member of a proscribed organisation. “While support of and membership of ISIS is unlawful it is not a criminal offence to advocate the creation of an independent state.” Despite not being charged, social media was rife with criticism over the actions. One Twitter user wrote: “How this scumbag draped in an #ISIS flag walking around #London has not done anything against the Law is beyond comprehension. Utter nonsense,” whilst another added: “Only in London would it be deemed okay to walk around with an ISIS flag wrapped round you. Our legal system is beyond useless.”

Toy guns banned in Peshawar

Plastic replica guns have been banned by one Pakistani city in an attempt to stop children mimicking the militancy and extremist violence endemic in parts of the country. These popular "toy guns" fire plastic or rubber pellets and are based on the designs of weapons such as the AK-47 automatic rifle. The city of Peshawar, with a population of around seven million, will put a temporary ban on anyone selling or carrying these guns during the Muslim festival of Eid Deputy Police Commissioner Riaz Khan Mahsud has said. “The basic purpose behind the ban on the sale of toy guns is to discourage the growing trend of arms and violence among the children,” he said. Peshawar is the regional capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a

province surrounded by tribal areas that have been ravaged by violence involving the Taliban and al Qaeda. The city was also the scene of an attack by Taliban militants on a school in December that left almost 150 students and others dead. “Unfortunately, militancy and violence have promoted the culture of arms in our society and children are now frequently playing with toy arms instead of traditional toys,” said Professor Zafar Iqbal, a pediatric ophthalmologist who has treated dozens who suffered serious eye injuries from rubber pellets. Authorities don't keep figures on the number of children hurt by the so-called toys. “When children use toy guns in childhood, they don't hesitate using the real arms when grow up.”

Azra Nafees, a social and peace worker, hopes the ban will be extended across the province. “We had been struggling for many years against sale of dangerous toy guns in the country in general, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in particular, as it is badly affected by terrorism and violence,” she said. Father-of-three Hameedullah Khan was also in favor of the move but said it should be permanent as well as countrywide. “When children use toy guns in childhood, they don't hesitate using the real arms when they grow up,” he said. Mahsud, the deputy police commissioner, said that while the ban was only slated to take place during Eid, it could be extended if it proved popular with the public.

India’s Prime Minister to visit Pakistan in 2016

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to make a landmark visit to Pakistan next year according to foreign secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The announcement may signal a warming of ties between the nuclear-armed neighbours after years of tension. Modi accepted the invitation to attend a 2016 meeting of South Asian leaders in Islamabad during talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the margins of a security summit in Russia, Jaishankar said. Experts warned the trip could yet fall through, but if Modi goes, it would be the first time an Indian leader has visited the country since Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004. The move demonstrates a readiness to engage with India's longtime rival despite the hawkish stance Modi's government has often taken. The leaders also agreed to work together to rein in regional militancy, scheduling rare meetings between national security advisers and heads of border security, as well as helping expedite the trial of those charged with the 2008 attacks in Mumbai. Modi and Sharif shook hands for about 15 seconds, smiling, before sitting down

for talks. "The very fact that they've met is good," said Ayaz Amir, a political analyst and former lawmaker in Pakistan. "If they perhaps agreed to try to tone down the extremist rhetoric coming from both sides, that would be even better." Modi's government has adopted a tough posture on Pakistan, insisting that it show greater progress in prosecuting members of the Pakistan-based group charged with carrying out the Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed. In April, when a Pakistani court freed on bail Zaki-urRehman Lakhvi, accused of

plotting the attacks, the move drew swift condemnation from India, which warned that relations were deteriorating. Clashes on the border in disputed Kashmir have also intensified during Modi's first year in office. On the eve of Friday's talks, an Indian border guard was shot dead by a Pakistani sniper in northern Kashmir, Indian officials said. Sharif was elected in Pakistan in 2013 on the back of promises to rebuild relations with India, but has come under pressure to toughen his stance from hardliners at home, particularly within the army.

Turkey detains 21 on suspicion of belonging to Islamic State Police staged raids across Turkey on Friday 10th July, detaining 21 people, most suspected of belonging to Islamic State, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Three of the detainees were foreigners, and authorities believe they were planning to enter Syria to fight for Islamic State, which is battling both President Bashar alAssad's forces and opposition groups backed by Turkey's Western allies. Under pressure from NATO members, Turkey has stepped up efforts to prevent foreign fighters crossing into neighboring Syria to join Islamic State, which espouses a fundamentalist Islamic ideology. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said the Syrian conflict poses a major threat to Turkey. Thousands of foreigners have been barred from entering because of security concerns. Officials at the counter-terrorism department in Istanbul's police headquarters declined to comment. Authorities seized hunting rifles and ammunition in the simultaneous dawn operations in Istanbul and the nearby town of Kocaeli, as well as in Sanliurfa and Mersin, which are in southern Turkey near the Syrian border, Anadolu said.

India’s Bollywood state to get $16 billion revamp India's wealthiest state plans to spend almost $16 billion over five to six years on a revamp of key infrastructure, reviving longdormant projects including a Mumbai airport, a port and a key coastal road, Maharashtra's chief minister said. Seeking to accelerate economic growth, India's government has prioritised the kick-starting of infrastructure projects that had gathered dust, either because of an obstructive bureaucracy, a lack of private sector interest or in some cases, lengthy litigation.

Congested Mumbai, the biggest city in Maharashtra and India's financial capital is home to some of the most delayed projects in the country. Half of its population is under 25. "It should not have waited so long. It is late. But now we will try to catch up," Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. Fadnavis, who last year became the first member of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party to run the state, said he had accelerated the

infrastructure plans, in part due to direct intervention from the central government. That includes, for example, for the new Mumbai airport, which is scheduled to see its first flight in 2019. The airport is a crucial part of efforts to push Mumbai development away from the sea, alleviating a metropolitan area estimated to be home to more than 20 million and whose roads and public transport are already choked.

That project will include a road bridge, on the drawing board for more than four decades and taken up by the media as a case study in infrastructure delays and the impact of poor planning - as well as a new city on a 600 square km plot around the airport, the size of the current city of Mumbai. The broader infrastructure plan will also include a new port outside Mumbai, reviving a project first mooted in 1996.

India joins hand with U.S. to close in on tax evaders

India and the United States have signed a tax information sharing agreement to combat offshore tax dodging by Americans as well as by Indians stashing funds abroad. The agreement aims to close a window for U.S. citizens to avoid tax through financial products like equities, bank accounts and insurance. In return, New Delhi expects

to garner Washington's support to bring back illicit funds stashed by Indians in foreign tax havens and boost revenues by getting information about Indians working in the United States. The agreement ‘would enhance tax transparency and eventually bring in higher equity into the direct tax regime which are necessary for

a healthy economy’, India's revenue secretary Shaktikanta Das said at the signing in New Delhi on 9th July. Following his election promise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has enacted a 'black money' law that foresees tough penalties and a jail term for tax evaders who fail to declare their overseas incomes. Washington has signed pacts covering more than 80 tax jurisdictions to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, or FATCA, requiring financial institutions to share information about Americans' accounts worth more than $50,000. Last year, Modi joined leaders from the Group of 20 countries in Australia in an agreement for countries to automatically exchange tax information on a reciprocal basis by the end of 2018. Under the pact, banks, mutual funds, insurance, pension and stock-broking firms will report their American client details to the tax department for sharing with the United States, said an Indian finance ministry official. Investors will have to provide correct information about their tax residency and financial assets that would be shared with the U.S. tax authorities, he said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the record.

Saudi prince vows to donate $32 billion fortune One of the world's richest people Saudi Arabia's billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has said that he will donate all of his wealth, in excess of $32 billion, to charity over the coming years. The money will go to the Saudi prince's organisation called ‘Alwaleed Philanthropies’ to work in the fields of ‘intercultural understanding’ and supporting communities in need, he said in a statement. The prince's two children were present at his boardroom when he made the announcement in Riyadh.

Programs of Alwaleed will include promoting health, eradicating disease, bringing electricity to remote villages, building orphanages and schools, as well as ‘empowering women’. The prince, chairman of investment firm Kingdom Holding Company, said he has already donated $3.5 billion to the charitable organisation. Alwaleed joins other billionaires who have made similar pledges in recent years, such as Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Michael Bloomberg. He credited the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their wide range of charitable projects and said his organisation has partnered with them on health initiatives. “Philanthropy is a personal

responsibility, which I embarked upon more than three decades ago and is an intrinsic part of my Islamic faith,” he said in the statement, which came during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims are encouraged to give charity and help the needy. The prince, who does not hold an official government position, built his wealth through seed money from his father and smart investments. Kingdom Holding owns stakes in hotels like The Four Seasons, Fairmont and Raffles, as well as companies such as News Corp., Citigroup, Twitter and Apple. Though he did not give an exact timeframe, Alwaleed said his billions would be allocated through a ‘welldevised plan’ throughout the coming years. He said the donations would be based on a strategy supervised by a board of trustees, which he will head.

The wraps have been taken off one of the most gratifying cars ever produced – with the second generation Porsche Boxster Spyder marking a new edition of the purist roadster. The guys at Porsche state that it’s the most powerful and fastest Boxster ever created. With 375 horsepower - 45 more than the Boxster GTS and 10 fewer than the Cayman GT4 - from a naturally aspirated, 3.8-litre flat-six borrowed from the 911 Carrera S and a top speed of 180 mph, the numbers back up the boast. The larger, more-powerful engine also is shared with the GT4, and it trumps the 3.4-litre unit from the S and GTS. The little beauty accelerates from a standstill to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is half a second faster than the Boxster GTS with a manual transmission. The unwavering standard of the North Loop of the Nürburgring proves Porsches claims convincingly - it takes seven minutes and 47 seconds for the Boxster Spyder to come around to the starting/finishing line again. The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements that recall legendary sports and race cars from Porsche. For example, as a tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s,

The color black defines the interior ambiance with many elements in Alcantara. The door opener straps are reminiscent of classic race cars. Trim strips are painted in the exterior color customers can select from a total of ten colors. Particularly striking among the optional equipment features is the Spyder Classic package, which Porsche has bundled exclusively for the top model of the Boxster family. In this package, garnet-red leather is used to upholster the top of the instrument panel, the seats and the sides of the center console. Wholesale diesel price drop fails to reach forecourts Diesel wholesale prices have dropped below those for unleaded, new research has revealed, but despite this it's still much more expensive on the forecourt. The RAC's Fuel Watch report for June shows that diesel wholesale prices are the equivalent of 1-3p cheaper per litre, but the average diesel price per litre is currently 120p compared to petrol's 117p. Some retailers have reportedly reduced diesel prices slightly, but the RAC is aware of none that have taken the price of diesel below that of petrol, suggesting that retailers running on “wafer-

thin” margins on petrol are being forced to compensate with higher diesel prices. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We as a nation of motorists are far more focused on petrol prices and therefore there is a perceived benefit from a retailer’s point of view in keeping petrol prices lower for the country’s 20m petrol car owners than it is for the 10m-plus diesel car drivers.” “While there are twice as many petrol cars on the road, the increase in diesel usage shown in government statistics and the new car sales figures which show more than 50% of cars and light

Hydrogen-powered Toyota tops 300 miles per tank A Toyota powered by hydrogen has become the first of its kind to pass the 300 miles per tank mark in official tests. The Mirai's combined fuel economy of 80.5 mpg makes it good for 312 miles on a single fill-up. That makes it the longest-range zero-emission production car anywhere in the world, potentially paving the way for development of greater refuelling infrastructure in the developed world. Jim Lentz, Toyota North America CEO said: “Toyota realised in the early 90s that electrification was key to the future of the automobile. “Just as Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation.” A Toyota press release calls the Mirai “the world’s first massproduced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, a four-door saloon with performance that competes with traditional internal combustion engines. “Instead of using petrol, Mirai runs on electricity created on demand by hydrogen fuel and oxygen. The only emission produced by this process is water vapour.” It will be introduced to the UK in very small numbers to begin with, as well as other European markets. Toyota's strongest markets, Japan and the USA, will get the first deliveries.

More than one in five young male drivers are now using so-called 'black boxes' in their cars to help lower their insurance premiums, new research claims. And while 22 per cent of men aged 18-24 have taken up the option, only 14 per cent of women of the same age have. As many as 323,000 drivers now have telematics policies, according to the Consumer Intelligence research; a rise of around 9 per cent in the last 18 months. But insurers are being urged to offer new policies for different age groups so that the technology spreads more fully across the market. Consumer Intelligence's own research is claimed to show that 61 per cent of motorists would take out telematics if it cut their premium, 59 per cent would consider it if they were offered refunds for safe driving and 52 per cent would in return for refunds on lower mileage. But the same data shows that two out of three drivers don't believe telematics will ever become mainstream; 53 per cent say it will only ever be a niche market while nine per cent expect it to not grow and four per cent even believe it will become redundant as technology improves. No rain on Keighley’s parade The weather was once again the biggest challenge for many teams across the Quaid-e-Azam league last weekend, as only six games were played out in their entirety. In the Premier Section, leaders Keighley RZM (119-4) look like they are already over the finish line in their hunt to retain the championship title as they defeated White Rose (118) by six wickets. Taking advantage of cancellations elsewhere, the runaway leaders have extended their lead at the top to 14 points and continue to be the driving force in the division. Yasir Ali’s unbeaten 40 was enough to guide his team to victory in their latest challenge as this unbeaten campaign stretches to ten games. White Rose meanwhile struggled to overcome the deadly deliveries from the visitors and stay just two points above the bottom two in the table. The only other game to get the goahead in the top division was between Shimla’s (169) and Raja (118) with the full 20 wickets seen before the rain poured down. Imran Malik smahed a half century with 65 runs for the visitors yet it was not enough to prevent the opponents leapfrogging his side in the Premier division. If the rain had not of caused so much disruption, the outstanding innings of the

will be hoping for a better showing when they face off on Sunday. Shaheen chased down the total, losing just six wickets, to earn their third win of the year and climbed to sixth spot. Both teams will face-off again in the 1 Stop Tyres Shield at Saltaire Cricket Club, Roberts Park, Coach Road, Shipley on Sunday from 1.30pm. In Section A Group 2, the weather held off enough for three games to be completed with some low scores helping to wrap up action early. Al-Minarah (60-1) made light work of Patriots (57), with Mansoor Hussain taking four wickets for 16 runs and Zahid Mahmood registering figures of 4-7, whilst leaders Kashmir Bradford (82) suffered their second loss in convincing fashion to My Lahore (84-4). Khalid Mahmood’s unbeaten 44 was the perfect way to follow up Manzer Shah’s (4-27) destructive spell with the ball for Lahore. Just ten points now separate the top five teams in the division as the promotion race heats up.

Palestino FC THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL MAN IN BOXING –

In my time of watching boxing I have been privileged enough to watch some fantastic competitive boxing bouts and more importantly some of the world’s best skilled boxing gladiators who will do anything it takes to get a win in the ring. I have also witnessed the suspicious and absolutely weird boxing events like a man parachuting into a boxing ring during a boxing bout, boxer biting his opponent’s ear off and referee’s stopping a fight prematurely even though the boxer was not hurt during the bout and was on route to get a win on the scorecards. This past weekend I watched Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (32-1-1) take on an undefeated fighter called Jessie Vargas (26-1). Bradley won the bout against Vargas via unanimous decision at the StubHub Center in Carson, Califonia but the end of the fight was probably one of the strangest events I have ever seen. Bradley himself is probably one the toughest fighter in boxing right now, but more to the point he has also been involved in some of the most bizarre happenings during a boxing bout on a regular basis. Bradley had controlled the boxing bout with his controlled aggression, accurate point scoring punching and his determination to succeed like always. Bradley was well ahead on the score cards and the bout had reached the 12th round of the fight. Vargas not willing to give up trying to win until the final round was wounded but still determined and then out of nowhere managed to land a powerful counter right hand that landed flush on Bradley’s chin, that managed to daze Bradley as he covered up and leaned on the ring ropes for survival. Lucky for Bradley the 10 second end of the round warning sounded and the referee thinking it was the

end of the round waved to stop the fighters fighting, but the fighters and the entire viewing crowd thought Vargas had been given a technical knockout victory. The fight ended with 4 seconds still left in the bout and Vargas was denied the chance of possibly obtaining a knockout victory against Bradley and he was also told that the referee had mistakenly stopped the boxing bout early. It was understandable to see Vargas furious with the referee and asked for an immediate rematch with Bradley. Bradley in my view has never been in a boring fight and always fights with his heart, like a true warrior who gives it his all, but unfortunately he always gets involved in boxing controversies and lacks public respect he deserves through no real fault of his own. In 2012 Bradley fought Manny Pacquiao and won a controversial decision when he should have clearly lost that fight. In 2013 Bradley fought Ruslan Provodnikov and ended up winning the fight but physically beaten up with a severe concussion that needed hospital treatment. More recently Bradley fought Diego Chaves and the fight was again controversially scored a draw when Bradley had clearly won nearly every round of that fight. Bradley has hinted that his next fight will be a rematch against Vargas due to the nature of Bradley getting the win and Vargas screaming out that the last ten seconds cost him the fight. However other great options for Bradley as the next possible opponent could be Keith Thurman, rematch with Diego Chaves, England’s Kell Brook or Amir Khan, Shawn Porter after his impressive win against Broner and “the best himself” Floyd Mayweather who is still looking for a September 2015 opponent. I just hope things get calmer for the “Desert Storm” Bradley whoever his next opponent maybe and I look forward to his next fight.

To set up an amateur football team takes a lot of effort, a lot of dedication and unfortunately for so many prospective sides, a bit of cash as well. So, when Nazraan Khan was presented with the chance of fulfilling a long-time ambition of launching his own club, the 28-year-old from Bradford decided to put his hand in his own pocket and Palestino FC was born. Established just in time for last year’s 2013/14 campaign, the football enthusiast had to sell his own quad bike to fund the club, paying for registration fees, pitch leases, kits and player insurance before a ball was even kicked. Bringing in players from all communities, backgrounds and races, the team quickly settled into life in the Spen Valley First Division, and against all odds, clinched promotion to the Premier. A memorable season was capped off by two appearances in cup finals – the Spen Valley Memorial and Spen Valley Division One Cup, and despite finishing runners-up on both occasions, it was a massive achievement for the newly found club. Nazraan, known as Naz to all, is currently enjoying his role as chairman, interim coach and player, balancing all this with his full-time job as an account manager in the city. As well as speaking with pride when discussing every element of his club, the qualified FA coach said it was the make-

A club for all communities up of his team which he was most proud of. “My vision when setting up this team was to bring an integrated team to this deprived area, where it doesn’t matter what race, religion or colour you are, as long as you want to play football,” he said. “In sport, race should be irrelevant and our club shows a togetherness representative of the communities we have grown up in. “There are a couple of lads playing here who are in the armed forces, we have some Asian players, black and white players, even one who is a Spanish national. “The team spirit is fantastic in the squad and that is why we have been successful.” As well as leading the way on the pitch, off-the-field the club is also very active in the local community, raising thousands of pounds for local and international causes over the past 12 months. It is just another aspect of the club that Naz says he wants to ensure exists every year, working with the community and growing all the time. “We are already in talks to hopefully launch an under-15’s side soon and the senior squad itself is a very good size with around 26 players,” he added.

“All of this would not have been possible without the support of the players, coaches, sponsors and community as a whole who have been terrific since day one.” Palestino FC currently play their home games at Peel Park, in Undercliffe, and will kick-off their 2015-16season at the end of August. Blazer chucked out of FIFA

A former FIFA executive committee member has been banned for life from any activities within the sport following US investigations into corruption by football officials. The flamboyant Chuck Blazer, who at one point weighed over 400lbs, pleaded guilty to bribery and financial offences in secret in 2013. Last week, the sport’s governing body’s ethics committee found the 70-yearold had breached rules on loyalty, confidentiality, duty of disclosure, conflicts of interest, offering and accepting gifts and bribery and corruption. In a statement provided by the committee, they said: “Mr Blazer committed many and various acts of misconduct continuously and repeatedly during his time as an official in different high-ranking and influential positions at FIFA and CONCACAF (which governs the sport in North and Central America and the Caribbean). “In his positions as a soccer
