Literature Festival presents Poetry in the City, a fun-filled programme of over three days incorporating workshops, a multi-lingual Mushaira and open-mike poetry events. The line-up includes national names and regional treasures from the world of poetry. Ilkley Literature Festival director Rachel Feldberg comments: “We have brought together a fantastic blend of poets from all over the north of the country including some special performances by world class poets. “We’re thrilled to be working in partnership with the World Curry Festival where we can offer food for thought, at the same time as having some fun.

“Poetry has always been an important element of the Ilkley Literature Festival and it is great that we are able to create a platform for a younger generation of poets to perform alongside and be inspired by some of the best known poets of our generation.” World Curry Festival Director and Founder Zulfi Karim explains: “For me, curry and culture blend together so seamlessly. Just like food, poetry is something that is far better shared. “The art offers another reason for people to come together and share an experience. Poetry is food for the soul, so lends itself brilliantly to what this festival is all about.”

Employment tribunal hears law firm’s sacking of director for ‘misuse of funds’

Judge passes scathing judgement

OVERSEAS: Anjum Tahirkheli has spent much time abroad during her work with BHR

Front cover story continued

Ms Anjum Tahirkheli, 46, had presented a claim on August 15th 2012 that she had been unfairly dismissed from her position as financial director of Khan’s Solicitors in Sunbridge Road, Bradford, because the firm had failed to follow a fair procedure. She sought compensation for this. On the first morning of the hearing on February 20th, Khan Solicitors accepted that the dismissal had been unfair because it had not followed any procedures at all before deciding to dismiss Ms Tahirkheli. However, the tribunal went on to hear two days of evidence to decide that even if Khan’s had followed procedures, was their ousting of Ms Tahirkheli from the firm legally justified? The panel heard that Khan’s was set up in 1997 with three partners Mohammed Sarwar Khan (Ms Tahirkheli’s now exhusband), Rashid Majid and Arshad Ali Khan - who left the partnership in 1998. From the firm’s inception Ms Tahirkheli was employed as the Office Manager. When the firm was incorporated in 2008, Ms Tahirkheli was referred to as the Finance Director. In due course three further associates became directors and shareholders of the company. In 2009, Ms Tahirkheli set up a charity, Basic Human Rights (BHR), which involved a lot of overseas travel. It was heard that in 2010 her marriage with Sarwar Khan came into difficulties and the couple obtained an Islamic divorce. Though they reconciled for a time, in May 2012 the marital discord came to head over a

dispute concerning BHR. From this point Ms Tahirkheli based herself at the charity’s offices, which were across the road from Khan’s solicitors buildings. Rashid Majid told the tribunal that he began to investigate the accounts and bank statements after he got a call from HMRC for an overdue corporation tax bill of £60,000 for the year ending 31st March 2011. Majid told the panel that he found numerous large payments leaving the office bank account, which he felt were unauthorised transactions and believed that Ms Tahirkheli was guilty of gross misconduct. The meeting to dismiss her as a company director took place in her absence on September 12th whilst Ms Tahirkheli was abroad. The tribunal heard evidence from Mr Majid of a substantial number of allegedly unauthorised transactions. They included the withdrawal of £20,000 from the firm’s office account, several payments from the firm’s account made abroad through currency exchange companies - which the tribunal found was more likely to be related to Ms Tahirkheli’s overseas work with her charity and payments of up to £2,000 made from the firm’s bank account to her children. In addition to the above, Ms Tahirkheli purchased a Range Rover in the name of the firm for £48,000 on June 1, 2012, to which the judge said she found it “simply incredible” that Ms Tahirkheli would have believed she had authorisation to do such a thing. Judge Cox said the tribunal was satisfied the firm had reasonable grounds to believe Ms Tahirkheli was guilty of misconduct and said the panel was struck by how

“complete was Mrs Tahirkheli’s refusal to accept she had acted in any way inappropriately in her administration of the firm’s affairs”. The Tribunal found that Ms Tahirkheli to be “one of the most unreliable witnesses it has ever heard” and that a large proportion of the answers she gave during questioning, upon cross-examination were “evasive, unclear and self-contradictory.” “She appeared to have no basic grasp of the need for integrity and accuracy in the firm’s accounts or, specifically, the need to draw a distinction between expenditure on the firm’s behalf and that on behalf of herself, her family and charitable interests,” Judge Cox said. Mrs Tahirkheli alleged the reason she was dismissed was that the directors were conspiring to oust her husband, Mohammed Sarwar Khan, from the firm and needed to remove her. But the tribunal said it was satisfied the reason the firm decided to dismiss her was its belief that she had been guilty of serious financial impropriety. Responding to the Tribunal’s findings, a senior spokesman for Khan’s said an independent forensic accountant was going through the firm’s books and on completion of that report it would consider reporting the matter to police. Anjum Tahirkheli speaking to the Asian Express has said that she will fight to clear her name and believes that casting her out from the company was a purposeful move by the other partners to ensure that she would have little or no financial gain from the ultimate settlement of her divorce with Sarwar Khan.

Backing for improvement to Leeds Leeds City Council has given its backing to plans to set up a Business Improvement District (BID) in the city centre. Council chiefs have agreed to support the private sector led development of a Leeds BID in principle, believing it will strengthen the city's ability to improve and promote Leeds City Centre as a leading European business location. At a meeting of the executive board, senior councillors heard that a successful Leeds City Centre BID could generate direct investment for the city centre up to £2.6m annually. Over 170 Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are operating in towns and cities throughout the UK

including Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle. Leeds is the largest city not to have a BID in the UK. For a Business Improvement District to be established, a ballot of businesses – those within the boundary and eligible to pay the levy - must deliver a majority vote in favour. The BID works by agreeing to introduce a levy that is collected through the business rate. Local organisations in the BID have the power to raise funds to be spent locally, with the aim of improving their own business environment. BIDs may use funds to pay for additional services, over and above those provided by the public sector, such as security,

events and marketing to attract visitors, signage, skills and employment initiatives. Senior Leeds councillors also supported the principle of small businesses, within the BID boundary, to be exempt from paying additional rates but not to be excluded from the benefits that the proposed BID would bring. The plan for a Leeds City Centre BID to be launched from April 1 2015. In the next phase of developing a BID, there will be formal consultation covering the proposed BID boundary, levy rate and threshold enabling a final business plan to be produced based on the feedback. A city centre wide ballot of businesses to vote for or against setting up a BID is planned to be held in November 2014.

CONFLICT: The development of the Pakeezah meat factory next to the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara has stirred much debate

Sikh temple wins meat plant battle By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Sikh worshippers in Bradford have won a legal battle to stop a meat processing plant being built next to their temple. Members at the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara building on Leeds Road had challenged the planning permission granted to the Asian supermarket Pakeezah to open a meat factory next door to the temple. The Gurdwara’s general secretary Govinder Singh Dhaliwal stated that cutting up of carcasses next door to the temple was deemed highly offensive to the many vegetarian temple-goers. Bradford Council had originally granted the food firm permission to convert a car workshop in Percival Street into a wholesale meat plant in August last year. The plans

were put on hold following the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara’s objections. Council leader David Green has said that after listening to the considerable concerns expressed by local people and groups about the planning application, the council was not prepared to spend any public money to oppose the judicial review. Mr Dhaliwal said that: “Sikhs and Muslims have been living beside each other in the city for more than 50 years in a diverse community so I would believe that we are educated enough to know what may cause offence. Muslim’s understand a lot of the Sikh beliefs and it is the same the other way around.” Mr Dhaliwal said the Gurdwara was delighted by the Council’s decision and were grateful for all the support they had received from Bradford’s other faith groups during their plight.

Domestic violence It’s common for Asian families to keep things quiet when things are not right in the home

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Imagine being beaten by your husband or threatened with deportation and having your children removed from you. Perhaps police show up in response to a call or complaint but you can’t speak their language. How would you deal with family members angry with you for bringing shame to your family or to your community? Domestic violence is vastly underreported in Asian communities for a number of reasons. The language barrier is a huge obstacle as is the great sense of bringing shame to the family. For many Asian women, their entire sense of identity is wrapped up in relationship to their Often Asian women will refer to families. themselves as ‘someone’s wife’ or ‘someone’s mother’. They often don’t introduce themselves or other women by name. Another problem identified is the link between violence and love in some Asian families. Many Asian people grow up in a society or a where corporal culture punishment is acceptable, to a certain degree, such as the misbehaviour of a child. The notion ingrained as time goes along is that, ‘well, daddy/mummy hit me because I was naughty and they wanted to correct me because they love me’. Now victims

of domestic violence in Leeds are being urged to not suffer in silence and take steps to access a wide range of support services available in the city. Working with a range of partners, including West Yorkshire Police and the NHS, Leeds City Council’s Safer Leeds Partnership is providing help in a number of ways to tackle domestic violence, support victims and work with previous offenders. Available 24 hours a day, the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) phone line offers confidential support and advice from trained staff for all victims of abuse aged 16 or older. Callers are assured that they will be listened to and treated with dignity and respect and can be offered access to further services depending on their needs. Depending on personal circumstances, a place in a refuge may also be offered but at no time will pressure be put on any caller to leave their partner or home if they are unsure or do not want to. The Safer Leeds Partnership is also responsible for overseeing enquiries which are made as part of new legislation entitled ‘Clare’s Law’, which enables people to ask police if their partner has a history of domestic violence. The partnership uses a multiagency approach to respond to women and/or their relatives who enquire about the past domestic violence offences if they are concerned the person may cause harm to a partner. An innovative new pilot project working with men to improve their relationships with their children and partners and reduce their risk at home has also been launched in three areas of Leeds. This is a 17-week programme called ‘Caring Dads’. Councillor Mick Coulson, Leeds City Council’s lead member for community safety said: “We would urge anyone who is experiencing domestic violence to please seek support from the wide range of services available in Leeds. “Nobody should have to suffer in silence, and we would like to reassure anyone who is thinking of contacting us that out trained staff will always listen, never judge and offer the best practical advice and support.” For further help and advice, or if you are from outside the Leeds catchment area, there are also a number of national numbers to call.

Bollywood to Bradford

By Anush Ansari

ANIMATOR: Dhananjay Khore from India is has earned his reputation over 15 years (Picture credit: Keith Allison)

One of Bollywood’s leading animators, Dhananjay Khore, jetted into the UNESCO City of Film to work with students from the Whistling Woods International (WWI) Film School. Offering aspiring filmmakers, animators and photographers at Bradford College the

opportunity to gain valuable insight into the industry, Dhananjay Khore charted his rise from fine art graduate to world-class animator. Speaking during his visit, Dhananjay said: “In 1995 the Russian production company Soviet Multi-film came to India and selected 50 fine art students out of almost 1000 from across the country. I was picked and trained on traditional animation by these legendary animators.” In a first for Bollywood, Dhananjay Khore directed the critically acclaimed first full-length animation feature film in India. The film, ‘Bhagmati – The Queen of Fortune’, a dramatic true love story, received recognition at the Cannes International Film Festival 2003. Dhananjay’s love of animation was sparked by his mother, who first introduced the young fine art student to the genre after she saw an animation clip on television and wanted to share it with her son. Commenting on what makes a good animator, Dhananjay said: “I think it’s important to have really good drawing and visualisation skills, which allows you to imagine and create a story for your audience.”

Leading animator from Indian film industry meets with college students

When asked what has made Dhananjay the successful animator we know today, he replied: “I have very good drawing skills and the ability to transfer those dreams onto paper. Although, in order to be successful in the industry today, it takes more than great drawing and creative skills, you also need to be technically competent too.” Offering advice to people starting out in the industry, Dhananjay said: “Firstly be honest with yourself, don’t try and be something that you’re not. You have to have a real passion for animation. Back in India, students come to me on a daily basis to discuss pursuing a career in animation.” When asked what his favourite animation was, Dhananjay replied: “The Lion King!” During his two-week visit to the UK, Dhananjay has been delivering experimental animation workshops and one to one sessions with students from the Bradford-WWI Film School. Students have been delighted to learn from one of Bollywood’s legendary animators, as Dhananjay’s work consistently dazzles, is technically remarkable and imaginatively astonishing.

Yorkshire & Humber are blackspots for youth employment By Anush Ansari

anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A report this week reveals that Bradford, Barnsley, Grimsby, Hull and Doncaster are amongst the ten cities with the worst national figures for youth employment in Britain. Bradford’s 25 per cent unemployment figure for 16-24 year-old puts it as sixth in the country’s top ten cities facing the highest UK youth unemployment crisis. The data processed by The Work Foundation ranks, and maps youth unemployment rates for 16-24 year olds across the UK’s largest towns and cities shows that even in the recovery, almost one in five young people looking for work are unable to find a job. It goes onto reveal that those who leave school with only GCSE level qualifications (or less) are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as those with better qualifications. The youth unemployment problem is so endemic in the UK that even those cities with the lowest rates (around 13%) are still a third higher than the German national average (8.6%) and double that of Germany’s best performing cities (e.g. Hamburg at 5%).

Now authorities are being told that these figures can improve if local services were to work together more effectively. The paper argues that without effective, targeted action from national and local government, businesses, and educators, a generation of young people in these cities will face a bleak future in the labour market. Commenting on the paper, Lizzie Crowley, head of youth unemployment programmes at The Work Foundation, said: “The UK’s youth unemployment crisis continues to affect almost a million young people – even in the recovery. “It is shocking that in some cities almost a third of young people are looking for work but are unable to find it. “Urgent action is needed to ensure young people get the right support to either continue in school, further training or with getting a job. “Central Government’s top-down attempts to tackle the crisis have failed. Local government must now be tasked with setting up Youth Transition Partnerships to bring together schools, colleges, third sector organisations, and local businesses to develop tailored policy responses suitable for each city. National government must also back these partnerships by providing dedicated funding to ensure they can fulfil this duty effectively.”

“Urgent action is needed to ensure young people get the right support to either continue in school, further training or with getting a job.”

DISGRACEFUL Bradford ninth on worst served hospital meal list

BRADFORD NHS: The hospitals claim that their food is ranked “Excellent/Good”

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Hospitals across the UK have been criticised after care watchdog reveals that almost half of all patients feel that hospital food is not good enough, and that some trusts are spending just £2.64 a day on three meals. Bradford ranked ninth on the country’s worst served meals list. NHS hospitals claim their own studies show that 99 per cent of patient meals are rated ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Now hospitals have been accused of conning the public with bogus claims about the quality and choice of food on offer to patients. Campaigners claim nutrition and quality standards are below those for prisons and Whitehall department restaurants, which must adhere to mandatory levels. In some NHS trusts, such as the Heatherwood and Wexham Park, which serves Ascot, Maidenhead, Slough and Windsor, less than four in ten rated the food as ‘good’, placing it bottom of the league of patient satisfaction. However, a survey of staff at its hospitals rated the food, which is prepared by outside contractors, as excellent. Other low scores were given to the Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent, and the South London Healthcare NHS Trust, which includes Queen Mary’s hospital in Sidcup. The research also reveals that there is little correlation between the amount of money spent on meals and their quality. For example, Heatherwood and Wexham Park trust spends a relatively high figure of £13 a day per patient, yet it came bottom on patient satisfaction. The lowest spending to provide three meals to patients was at the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, where the figure was just £2.94. The trust which spent the most on food was Barts in London at £15.65 a day, however the proportion of patients who rated the food as good was just 48 per cent. The figure at the South Tees trust was £15.47 a day – five times higher than the nearby Gateshead hospitals. At South Tees, the proportion of patients who rated food as good was 60 per cent.

April 2014 - 2nd Edition The damning figures were released by the Campaign for Better Hospital Food, which is supported by 97 organisations, including the Royal College of Physicians, British Heart Foundation and the Patients Association. All are calling on the Government to support a change in the law that would improve all patient meals by requiring them to meet mandatory standards, including quality and nutrition. Campaign co-ordinator, Alex Jackson said that it was time for the Government to come clean about the sorry state of hospital food in England and set mandatory standards for patient meals. Jackson said: “This would only involve extending an existing policy which has seen it set mandatory standards for prison food and food served in government departments, to go alongside those that already exist for school food. “Surely patients recovering in hospital have the same right to good food as government ministers, school kids and prisoners?” The Unison union, whose members work in hospital kitchens, claimed that meals produced inhouse were generally a higher quality than those from outside contractors. Its deputy head of health, Sara Gorton, said: “While costs vary, it is plain that food cooked fresh on hospital premises scores the highest with patients. “Unison is backing calls for set standards for hospital food in England. At the same time we want more hospitals to use kitchens to prepare and cook patient meals instead of bringing in readymeals from outside.” The Department of Health rejected the need for minimum legal standards and said the figures, which relate to 2011-12, were out of date. A spokesman said: “There are many fantastic examples of really good food across the NHS thanks to forward-thinking and innovative staff. “But, we recognise that there is too much variation across the country — that is why we have implemented a tough new inspection programme. “With our army of thousands of patient assessors we will drive up standards and reduce variation in hospital food.” She added: “We support the principle of food standards but do not think that legislation is the right way to proceed.”

UK leadership helps to end falls in global aid

UK leadership in tackling global poverty has helped to encourage other donor countries to step up to the plate and deliver big increases in aid, Oxfam said this week. The international agency was responding to figures which show that donors bucked the recent trend of declining aid levels, to reach $134.8 billion (over £81 billion) for 2013. Oxfam welcomed this year’s aid increase, which follows two years of worrying cuts. It praised the UK’s leadership, which it said had shown other countries it is possible to meet promises to the world’s poorest even during tough economic times. In 2012 aid fell by an alarming £5.5 billion compared with 2011, the biggest drop in aid spending seen for fifteen years. However, Oxfam is alarmed that global aid to sub-Saharan African countries continues to fall and that the OECD believes that this trend is likely to continue. Aid to Africa dropped 5.6 percent to just £17 billion - back to the level it was 10 years ago. Oxfam noted that despite the record aid levels, still only five donor countries have achieved the promise of 0.7 per cent of their Gross National Income – Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and now also the UK. Oxfam says the large number of current emergencies means aid is needed now more than ever - from the millions whose lives were devastated by the Philippines typhoon to the growing humanitarian crises in South Sudan and Central African Republic and the ongoing conflict in Syria.

After school club raises funds for Syria When children at the after school club in Bradford started to brainstorm about how to raise money for a good cause they collectively arrived at an idea to host a spring bazaar. Students and teachers from an after school club helped run stalls and activities with the hope to raise money for the people of Syria with the ‘Keep Syria Warm (Yorkshire)’ campaign. The event organised by Raising Explorers, in Manningham, Bradford roped in the support of the Intouch Foundation and Al Hikmah project (Keighley) and managed to raise £2,750 for the cause. The children at Raising Explorers who are based at the Carlisle Business Centre in Manningham were instrumental in making the day a true success. They were involved in planning and co-ordination as well as taking part. Khalil Shah Manager from Raising Explorers said: “The turnout at the event was amazing especially considering the short space of time the event was put together. I would like to express my appreciation on behalf of the staff and students to the team at Carlisle Business Centre especially Dom for his efforts, the local community for their continued support. “We had reached out to local businesses and asked for their partnership in making this event a success. We are in deep gratitude for the generosity of the local businesses who contributed in making the event the success it was.”

Decapitated whilst alive DECAPITATED: Emergency services say that the scene at the flat where Reema Ramzan’s body was discovered was the worst they had ever seen

By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk

An 18-year-old woman was still alive when her boyfriend started to cut off her head with a knife, a jury has been told in Sheffield. Aras 21-year-old Hussein, killed Reema Ramzan by decapitating her at his flat in Herries Road, Sheffield, before stabbing himself in the chest, the city's crown court heard this week. Prosecutor Graham QC Reeds told jurors about the wounds Miss

Crown Court hears how 18-year-old Reema Ramzan was killed by her boyfriend Ramzan suffered at the hands of her Iraqi-born boyfriend on June 4, last year. Mr Reeds said: “Bruising into tissue wounds suggest that Reema was still alive as the defendant started to remove her head. “The process of decapitation would require considerable motion with corresponding considerable force which needed to be sustained until all the tissues had been cut through. “Force would also be needed to restrain the victim who is likely to have been struggling. “Severe force would have been needed to cut through the spinal vertebrae with a knife in order to remove the head.” Mr Reeds told the jury: “Noone can know what happened in that room immediately before the killing and what led to it.” He said Hussein was spotted naked outside his flat with blood pouring out of his chest.

The prosecutor said the defendant told emergency workers who came to his aid: “I don't know why I did it.” He said Hussein told the paramedics: “She like me but I raped her. What I did was wrong. I need punishing for it.” And he told them: “Why are you helping me? I've murdered someone.” Hussein sat in the dock

listening to Mr Reeds open the case for the prosecution, wearing a grey waistcoat, white shirt and striped tie and surrounded by guards. He denies murder. Mr Reeds told the jury Hussein is likely to claim he was suffering from diminished responsibility at the time of the attack due to schizophrenia.

New Sharia-compliant University loans for students

NEW: The Sharia law-compliant loans will help Muslim students go to university

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

A new model for Sharia law-compliant student loans has been unveiled this week by Universities and Science Minister David Willetts. The proposed system will enable people whose religious beliefs forbid them from taking out loans that accrue interest to take advantage of student loans. Speaking at a Universities UK Conference on universities and growth, David Willetts launched a consultation on the proposed model asking for views on whether it is an acceptable alternative to the conventional system. The model will be available to anyone who adopts similar financial principles. Anyone taking the loans will not be at any advantage or disadvantage – they will repay the same amount as other borrowers. David Willetts said: “The Government is committed to ensuring that anyone with the ability and desire can go to university. “Sharia-compliant student loans will also give universities access to a wider pool of talent and help the UK get the higher level skills we need to secure long-term economic growth.” The intention to develop Sharia law-compliant student loans was announced by the Prime Minister last year. The Government is seeking feedback from current and prospective students, community representatives and higher education providers. The consultation opened April 3rd and will run for 12 weeks.

“Shariacompliant student loans will also give universities access to a wider pool of talent and help the UK get the higher level skills we need to secure longterm economic growth.”

‘Speak Up’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Local primary school pupils turned into poets last month as ‘Speak up’, an annual performance poetry event for year 5 pupils from local schools, was hosted by The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL). A whole school day was set aside for teams of four from six local schools and GSAL’s Junior School to work with professional poets from Leeds Young AuthorsKhadijah Ibrahim, Paulette Morris and Rheima Robinson. They devised original poetry and studied published work on the theme of Yorkshire, in celebration of the arrival of Le Tour de France later this year. In the evening the pupils performed at a ‘Poetry Slam’ in the theatre for their families and a panel

An interview with former West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable, Jawaid Akhtar By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

For 32 years, Jawaid Akhtar was proud to call himself a member of the West Yorkshire Police Force yet at the start of 2014, he finally called time on his long-standing career and became ‘just Jawaid’ once again. Involved in some of the biggest cases in West Yorkshire throughout the last four decades, he will perhaps be best remembered for spearheading the investigation into Bradford’s ‘Crossbow Cannibal’, Steven Griffiths. His rise up the ranks eventually saw him obtain the role as West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable upon retirement, after beginning as just another officer in Huddersfield in 1982. One of the very first Asian officers in the force, he helped pioneer the way for an inclusive institution, educating many and breaking down barriers. Despite experiencing a rise in

‘It was my responsibility to help others learn about our culture’ Islamophobia following cases such as 9/11 and the Lee Rigby killing, he never doubted that a career in the police wasn’t for him. Speaking to the Asian Express, he remembered what it was like starting out as an officer and the importance of his family’s support in the early days. “When I started in the police in Halifax in ‘82, I was one of the early few Asian officers to join the force,” he said. “It was a very different organisation to the one now. With so few people from the BME community I guess there was a curiosity really surrounding me. “It wasn’t so much a bad thing, just a lot of people hadn’t experienced an

Asian officer before so they just wanted to know what it was all about. “I guess you could compare it to a white person going to a very rural part of India and the local kids come out to see you because they have never seen a white person before. It wasn’t quite as extreme as that but there was certainly intrigue around us. “As one of the first Asian officers, I felt like I had a duty to help educate others and that is something I am very proud to have done from day one to the end – It was my responsibility to help others learn.” He added: “I came from a working-class background. My father worked in the mill, my eldest brother was a bus driver, and the other a mechanic so I wouldn’t say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. “I just had an extraordinary supportive family who wanted me to go into higher education and wanted me to get a good job, which I did through the graduate scheme.” Jawaid joined the Huddersfield branch of the police on the graduate scheme, a fast-track motion system that allowed him to rise up the ranks quickly. It was just another thing that made him unique and stand out to others in the force. “It was like a double whammy I guess,” he said. “As an Asian officer I was somewhat unique but to be a graduate at that time as well just added to the whole interest around me.” Despite experiencing occasional racist slurs, Jawaid said he never once thought that the police ‘wasn’t for him’ and said there were always people there for support throughout his career. As he began to rise up the ranks he got more and more responsibility and in one of his last investigations, he was the lead in one of Bradford’s most shocking crimes of recent memory. The ‘Crossbow Cannibal’ case saw Stephen Griffiths murder three sex workers in the city and Jawaid was appointed Gold Commander for the investigation. He said: “I remember sitting there one day with the senior investigating officer for that job who was Sukhbir Singh.

“I just sat there and thought, ‘who would have thought 30 years ago, on a case as significant as this, you would have an Asian gold commander and senior investigating officer’. “Back when I was a Detective Sergeant, I went to a scene involving an Asian family and spoke to them in Punjabi. Despite me being the highest ranking officer there, they just assumed I wasn’t as important as the white officers because of the colour of my skin. “So fast forward to the Stephen Griffiths case in 2009 and it shows how far we have come. It is one of the cases I am most proud of working on.” Despite the improved workplace for members of the BME community in the police, Jawaid added that there was still work to be done. “There are still so few officers in the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) ranks that are from a BME background,” he said. “Five or six years ago we were into double figures; I think there is about four left now so the challenge is still there. “I haven’t got the magic wand or answer as to why this is the case and I’d say for anyone who can explain it, there is a degree in it for them. Profile, ambitions, support, all these things contribute. “ Jawaid is succeeded in the force by his son, Moshin, who currently works out of the Huddersfield base. On his final day, the fatherand-son pair patrolled the streets for one last time, and despite his full backing of Moshin, Jawaid admits he still worries as a caring father. “Obviously there was great sense of pride that day and almost

nostalgia to be back where it all started on my final day, but this time I was with my son,” he said. “As a parent you still sort of worry and having been in the job, and having seen what happens in terms of some of the criticism people face, being a parent it is only natural to have them worries. “But, to see Moshin continue in the force is fantastic and he will be there for at least 30 years.” For a man from Pakistan, who moved to the UK at the age of 10 speaking no English, to have finished up as deputy chief constable of the fourth largest force in country is something quite remarkable, it is the story of Jawaid Akhtar.

Belle Vue Boys learn about diversity and discrimination Students from a Bradford secondary school received hands on learning about diversity and discrimination last month, as the country’s largest disability theatre company hosted a day of activities. Year 7 pupils from Belle Vue Boys' School worked with the ‘Mind the Gap Studios’ team based in the historic Lister Mills in Manningham, Bradford. As part of the school’s Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) programme, Ms Asma Khan, the Curriculum Leader at Belle Vue Boys', has incorporated a module of learning entitled 'Diversity and Difference'. The module focus led to the school and ‘Mind the Gap’ collaborating in the workshop 'Real Lives, Real Voices' – an interactive theatre workshop that explores disability harassment, including 'mate crime', 'hate crime' and violence. The workshop is led by

Ms Khan explained: “The workshop was fantastic at allowing students to actively empathise and experience hate crimes and its effects. “It most definitely raised awareness of the discrimination people with a disability may suffer in reality. “Working with Mind the Gap was an amazing experience for the students as Belle Vue is a community school and feels it is vital to support the sterling work of local organisations such as Mind the Gap.” Year 7 student, Kamran Serrant, took part in the day long activities and enjoyed the chance to learn about different disabilities. He added: “The workshop made me realise the different types of hate crimes and think about the victims of hate crime. It was helpful and fun.”

£150m development welcomed in Leeds By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Leeds’ prestigious new £150m Victoria Gate retail development is set to house one of the largest John Lewis stores outside of London. Leeds City Council has welcomed news that construction of the retail development will begin on 7th April, which will see the first John Lewis department store arriving in Leeds with a floor space of 24,000m². The eagerly awaited shopping quarter, due to open in 2016, will be a 21st century-inspired retail arcade, which plays on the city’s arcade history, featuring up to 30 stores, restaurants, cafes, casino plus a 800 space multi-story car park. The architecturally striking façade will draw on Leeds’ textile heritage with elegantly designed two street arcades linking Victoria Quarter to the new development. Alongside regenerating the space, the first phase will also deliver up to 1,500 retail and hospitality jobs and 1,000 construction employment opportunities. The council is working with Hammerson and construction contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to ensure employment, skills and training opportunities are available to the local workforce in Leeds. Careers fair will be organised in April for individuals wanting to find out more about jobs and training opportunities. Leeds City Council executive

Bradford’s nomination for Mrs UK World By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A self-entitled ‘proud Bradfordian’ is just one of 10 finalists in this year’s Mrs UK World - a competition which brings together inspirational married women from across the country. 36-year-old, Kul Sarai, will be representing her hometown of Bradford after she was told she had made the final cut on Valentine’s Day. An actress by trade, the mother of two said she was delighted to hear she had made the final, and explained how she got involved in the competition. “I’m on a website called ‘StarNow’, and saw the contest advertised on there,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if it was something I wanted to do initially but thought I’d drop them a line and they got back to me saying ‘we’ve

Kul began dating her husband, Bob, in 1996, and married one year later before moving to Mumbai where she took up a career in acting and modelling. Her biggest career break came during her time in India where she featured as one of Sharukh Khan’s girlfriend’s in the film Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Yet, upon returning to the UK in 2001, Kul settled into a

software developer role, leaving modelling and acting at the other side of the world. “After coming back to England I became a software developer for three years after doing a course in Mumbai,” she explained. “Then, after that I had my wonderful children so became ‘Mum’ for quite a while before taking up the acting again.” Out of this year’s ten finalists, who will compete for the crown of Mrs UK World in Beaconsfield in May, three nominations are Asian. This is a stat Kul, of Indian descent, is happy to see and explained what it would mean to her, to come away with the national crown. “It is really good to see it,” she said. “It’s nice to see the three of us there so to have an Asian face represent the whole of the UK would be amazing. “If I were to win, it would be a dream come true. To be an ambassador for the country would be amazing; to be able to travel all over the world and get out there and get my point across. “I would never have thought about being a model when I was younger but now I just can’t wait for the final.” The local contestant is currently looking for a Bradford business to sponsor her on her journey in Mrs UK World and asked if any interested parties would kindly contact her on kulsarai@ mail.com

Britain may force standardised cigarette packets Britain looked set to force tobacco companies to standardise cigarette packaging after a government review this week, that the move would help cut smoking rates. Ministers were criticised for delaying a final decision. A review commissioned by the government in November showed "compelling" evidence that plain packaging would improve public health and cut the number of child smokers, junior health minister Jane Ellison said. "It is in my view highly likely that standardised packaging would serve to reduce the rate of children taking up smoking and implausible that it would increase the consumption of tobacco," Cyril Chantler, who conducted the review, said in a letter to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Draft regulations and the results of a short consultation would be published this month allowing the law to come into force by May 2015, the month of the next election, she said. The opposition Labour Party welcomed steps towards a ban on branded cigarette packets, but criticised the government for delaying a final decision by holding a consultation. Labour health spokeswoman Luciana Berger said there was an overwhelming body of evidence in favour of standardised packaging and there was no excuse for further delays. "Over 70,000 children will have taken up smoking since the government announced the review,"

she told parliament. "How many more children are going to take up smoking before this government takes firm and decisive action?" Tobacco firms say the move would encourage counterfeiting and smuggling and have little effect on smoking rates. Britain's tobacco market is worth about $28 billion a year, according to Euromonitor International, and Britain collected 8.56 billion pounds ($14.24 billion) in duty on cigarettes last year. If the government sticks to its resolve, Britain would be following Australia, which in 2012 brought in laws forcing cigarettes to be sold in plain green packaging with graphic images showing the damaging health effects of smoking. New Zealand and Ireland have said they will introduce standardised packaging too. Shares in the two big London-listed tobacco companies, Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco both dropped by about 0.5 percent on the government statement. "You can only look at Australia who have had plain packaging for over a year. What you see is increased illicit cigarettes and consumers downtrading and neither of those things are particularly positive for the tobacco industry," Panmure analyst Damian McNeela said. In Australia, the government has been criticised for not doing enough to defend the merits of its packaging legislation and the debate over whether the ban has worked has suffered from a lack of hard data.

t’s always worthwhile to remind clients of the basics when it comes to bringing a claim in the courts and limitation dates are one of the fundamental considerations. The limitation issues of a case are crucial points to consider to prevent the possibility of a claim being time-barred. The law sets out deadlines for bringing claims (referred to as limitation periods) so that a claim cannot be brought too long after the cause of action arose. The law on limitation periods is set out in the Limitation Act 1980 which provides different deadlines for different causes of action. For example: • A claim founded on simple contract (a contract not contained in a deed) has a limitation period of six years from the date of accrual (or 12 years for a contract in a deed). • A claim in tort (a civil wrong) has a limitation period is also six years from accrual (the period is cut to three years for personal injury cases and one year for defamation cases). There are, however, certain situations where the time limit may be postponed until the Claimant discovers or could have discovered the relevant facts. Issuing proceedings stops time running for limitation purposes, therefore it is important to obtain legal advice on this point as soon as possible. Standstill Agreements If a limitation deadline is fast approaching, it may be worthwhile for the parties to enter into a Standstill Agreement. A Standstill Agreement

Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or by email at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

allows parties, by agreement, to suspend time for the purposes of limitation. It is important that a Standstill Agreement is clearly drafted and serves its proper intention otherwise the claim may nevertheless be time-barred. The risk of issuing prematurely In order to protect a Claimant’s position to prevent the claim from being time-barred, proceedings may be issued to prevent limitation from expiring. However, if the Claimant is then unable to formulate the claim properly, there is a risk that the claim could be struck out as an abuse of process. Save the date! When embarking on court proceedings, whilst it is important and encouraged to consider mediation and other methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution, it is crucial that clients do not allow negotiations as to possible settlement of the case to deter them from issuing proceedings in time. Little has changed in the laws governing limitation dates in recent years, although Lord Justice Jackson’s final report following his review of civil litigation costs included recommendations that have led to the preparation of new draft Pre-Action Protocols. However, it is not clear when these new and revised Protocols will be implemented. Watch this space! If you require advice in relation to a limitation date or a claim then please contract Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or email him at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

Sabar Din has always dreamt of opening an accommodation complex in the heart of one of Azad Kashmir’s most popular cities and now, following the official opening of The Ritzz Inn last month, the entrepreneur’s dream has finally come true. TRAGIC: The two British doctors Bharathi Ravikumar (above) and Uma Ramalingam (right) drowned in Tenerife whilst attempting to rescue their children who had drifted away by a wave

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Two British tourists have drowned in the sea off Tenerife after reportedly trying to rescue their children. The female victims, 42-year-old Uma Ramalingam and her relative Barathi Ravikumar, 39, went to help the youngsters after they were swept away by a wave. But the women - both doctors got into difficulties themselves near the resort of Playa Paraiso in the southwest of the island on April 6th. The youngsters, aged 10 and 14, were rescued by tourists and hotel workers while an emergency services helicopter pulled a third woman, 38, out of the water. She and the two children survived but the two other women each suffered a cardiac arrest and attempts to revive them were unsuccessful. A spokeswoman for Canary Islands emergency services said: "At just after 6pm yesterday afternoon we received several calls alerting us to two people who were in difficulties in the sea. "Witnesses rescued two women and two children from the sea. An emergency helicopter located a fifth person in the sea, a woman, and one of the respondents dangled out of the craft and pulled her out. "Staff from the Canaries health service, a doctor from a nearby health centre and another doctor who was at the scene found that two women were in cardiac arrest and tried to give them advanced CPR without success. "They later certified the death of both women. They also helped

stabilise the other people, taking a woman and a child to hospital." The 10-year-old child was reportedly taken to hospital with hypothermia while the 14-yearold was treated for minor bruises at the scene. The third woman was in cardiac arrest when she was rescued but survived after receiving CPR. A Guardia Civil spokeswoman confirmed the two women who died were British and relatives of the children, but said it had not been ascertained how they were related. An investigation is now under way. Dr Ramalingam was a consultant obstetrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Mr Olubusola Amu, from the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are greatly saddened to hear the death of Uma who had been working for the Trust for about six years. "She was a fantastic doctor who brought a lot of hope to the high risk women attending the Women and Children's Unit at The Royal Oldham Hospital. "This is a terrible shock to

everyone who knew Uma. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time. She will be sorely missed." Dr Ravikumar was a partner at a health surgery in Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln and has been described as "a hard-working and dedicated GP" who "always worked in the best interests of patients". A statement on her surgery's website said: "During her short time with the practice she was passionate about making a difference to healthcare in Lincolnshire and specialised in working with Looked After Children. "Dr Ravikumar will be sorely missed and leaves behind a husband and two children." In a joint statement, Dr Mohammed Zubair Qureshi, Dr Ashfaq Qureshi and Dr Rama Srinivasan, partners at the Heath Practice, added: "It is with great sadness and shock that our practice has learned of the tragic death of Dr Barathi Ravikumar, a hardworking and dedicated GP.

b. You can also mix powdered methi seeds with coconut oil to form a paste. Then massage the paste on your hair. You will notice positive results within 2 to 3 weeks of application. c. A paste of methi seeds mixed with coconut milk helps prevent hair loss, reduces dandruff and promotes hair growth. Conditioning: Fenugreek seeds contain lecithin, an emulsifying substance. When soaked in water, the seeds produce a slippery substance which endows your hair with shine. This quality makes methi seeds for hair conditioning an optimal choice. a. Soak the whole ground seeds in boiling water and leave them overnight. When the seeds turn slimy to touch, grind them into a paste and apply the mixture on your scalp and roots, then to the whole length of the hair. Do not let the paste dry completely as it will be difficult to wash off then. Wash it while it is moist. Covering the hair with a plastic bag will keep it moist for a long time. Let it remain for 30 minutes and wash it off.

Operation ‘Trojan Horse’ By Majed Iqbal info@asianexpress.co.uk

A leaked document last month claimed an alleged plot to oust twelve Birmingham head teachers to make their schools more suitable to accommodate Islamic principles. At the centre of the controversy was Tahir Alam, the chair of Governors for Park view High School, blamed for instigating ‘Operation Trojan Horse’ which claimed a ‘Muslim take over’ of Schools as far as Bradford. The document, 'Operation Trojan Horse', whose author is unknown and whose claims are unattested allegedly argued that schools were “corrupting children with sex education, teaching about homosexuals, making their (Muslim) children say Christian prayers and mixed swimming and sports." The story hit headlines in national newspapers leading Birmingham Council and even Education Secretary Michael Gove to call for further inquiry and investigations into the allegations. Tahir Alam was shocked to hear about the claims and believes that he is been the victim of a malicious attack.

“The document is the basis of the many sensationalised and Islamophobic articles in the media which seek to defame and vilify respectable individuals and institutions. Any reference to me is a malicious fabrication and completely untrue" Said Tahir Alam

Despite a large majority only 10% of the 100 schools run in Birmingham have head teachers who are Muslim. Tahir Alam has been surprised by the heavy handedness shown in the Inspections carried out in schools, citing it as unprecedented on how such action can be taken on the grounds of an un-verified report. “I have worked voluntarily as a school governor since 1997 for nothing other than Michael White said its the improvement of board of governors was children’s education" "taken over by a Muslim Trustee and Governor sect" in 1993 and that he was Dave Hughes of Park View "forced out" after he School said challenged governors' “When I started as a attempts to ban sex education governor there was no Halal and stop the teaching of non- food served, no arrangements Islamic faiths in religious for student prayer, for those education classes. who wanted it and girls who Dave Hughes, a Park View wanted to wear headscarves Trustee and Governor at Park were not allowed to. The Muslim ‘take-over’ of Birmingham Schools story is malicious rumour says governor Park view High School was one of twelve schools to be investigated, all of whom predominantly have a high percentage of Muslim student intake. The school gained ‘outstanding’ in its Ofsted review last year for its high standards and huge turn around in achievements over the years. In 2013 75% of pupils gained 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Math’s. Tahir Alam questioned then why someone would advocate a ‘takeover’ when the school is doing perfectly well? “This is an absurd idea. These schools are graded as

A Poet and he knows it Aukash Zahid talks

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A 17-year-old published writer from Cambridge is getting ready to launch his latest book which will include a special poem about his Asian background. Aukash Zahid has been writing poetry professionally for more than a year now and has already been published in 15 books, available in reputable outlets such as Waterstones and WHSmith. His poetry is specifically targeted at bringing communities together and he often reflects on his own personal experiences for inspiration for his writing. At such a young age, Aukash has built up a credible portfolio with his latest book, ‘Through the eyes of a poet’, set to be published in the near future. Speaking about his interest in writing he acknowledged a somewhat unusual idol and explained what he hoped to achieve through poetry. “Being an Asian Muslim inspires a lot of my poetry,” he said. “I admire Muhammad Ali's poetry a lot, and a few of my poems are very similar to his.

to the Asian Express about life as a poet

“With the influence of Muhammad Ali I've always wanted to do something to help the less fortunate, and to use my poetic talent to help those who need it. “The main aim of my poetry is to bring communities together, and to teach everyone that we are all free, that we are all equal, and that we all deserve a fair chance to succeed in life.” Through his expanding reputation as a poet, Aukash has become a regular on radio and television throughout the past 18 months and he says his ultimate dream is to appear on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, after seeing his boxing idol on the show previously. To the right is just one example of his growing portfolio of published work.

You Said He Was A Nobody You said he was weak, But yet he had a heart of steel, You said he was dumb, Is it because you didn't know the pain that he would feel. You bullied him always, And gave him less respect than a dead dog, You were the cause of his suicide, As all his memories were just depressed clouds of thick fog. You made him lose all his confidence, an attention seeker him called And when he searched for cure,

He drowned in his tears, As he was left all alone and insecure. His family mocked him because he was very shy, Little did they know about the pain he felt inside, He tried to tell his school, But all his wounds were just brushed aside. Then the day eventually came, When your harsh words became too much for him to take, He overdosed on some pills, Knowing that he would never awake! By Aukash Zahid

Pakistani baby accused of attempted murder goes into hiding A Pakistani lawyer taking the thumb impression from nine-month-old baby Mohammad Musa on a bail bond in Lahore

Relatives of a nine-month-old baby charged with attempted murder in Pakistan have taken him into hiding, a relative said on Tuesday 8th April, in a case that has thrown a spotlight on Pakistan's dysfunctional criminal justice system. Little Mohammad Musa Khan appeared in court in the city of Lahore last week, along with his father and grandfather after a mob protesting against gas cuts and price increases stoned police and gas company workers trying to collect overdue bills. It’s been alleged that baby Mohammad Musa along with his father and other family members had thrown rocks at gas company officials in the working-class Ahata Thanedaran neighbourhood on 1st February. Inspector Kashif Muhammad, who attended the alleged crime scene and has since been suspended, wrote in his report that it was a case of attempted murder. Appearing in a packed court room with others accused in the case, Musa was seen crying as his grandfather Muhammad Yasin held him on his shoulder. Yasin later fed him milk from a bottle while fielding questions from reporters. "Everyone in the court was saying 'How can such a small child be implicated in any case'? What kind of police do we have?" the 50-year-old labourer said. The charge is in direct contradiction with Pakistan's minimum age of criminal responsibility, which was raised from seven to 12 years in 2013 except in terrorism cases. Yasin accused the police of fabricating the charges because

they were colluding with a rival party who wanted to see the accused evicted from their land and had obtained an order to remove their gas connections. "The police and gas company officials came without any notice and started removing gas meters from houses. Residents started protesting and blocked the road but ended the protest when senior police officers arrived in the area and assured them that no injustice would be done. "But later we found out that cases have been filed against us," he added. Judge Rafaqat Ali Qamar ordered the inspector to be suspended and granted the child bail, though he will have to appear at the next hearing on 12th April. But the family's lawyer Chaudhry Irfan Sadiq, said the charges against the child should have been dropped. "The court should have simply referred the minor's case to the High Court to drop the charges against the innocent child and acquit him from the case," said Sadiq. "This case also exposes the incompetence of our police force and the way they are operating," he added. Feisal Naqvi, a supreme court lawyer has said the naming of family members in police reports was a common tactic employed by complainants in order to exert pressure on parties with whom they were involved in a dispute. He said: "It's not common for babies to be accused but it is common for other family members to be accused," he said. "What happens then is that vendettas are going on so

everyone gets picked up and gets chucked in jail," he added. Shoaib Suddle, a retired police chief, added that the system operates via 'first information reports' that date back to British colonial times, which give too much weight to allegations made by accusers. "The moment they are able to file a complaint, accusers expect that without any evidence people should be locked up and the investigation should follow, whereas the world over it is the other way around," Suddle said. The baby is on bail and due to appear at the next hearing on April 12 but Yasin said he was not sure if he would take him to court for the case.

Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

A woman rushed past security and threw a shoe at Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas on Thursday 10th April, but it missed and the former US secretary of state laughed off the incident. The woman launched the projectile at the 66-year-old former First Lady as she was addressing a meeting of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). Clinton, the presumed frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, ducked as the object whizzed past at head height to the left of her. "What was that, a bat?... Is that somebody throwing something at me?" Clinton said initially at the event at the Mandalay Bay hotel/casino, according to video footage by the local KTNV station. Regaining her composure and sense of humor, she added: "Is that part of Cirque du Soleil?" - a reference to the acrobatic dance troupe, which has several shows in Vegas. "My goodness, I didn't know that solid waste management was so controversial. Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she said, drawing laughter and cheers from the audience.

The blonde woman who threw the shoe was immediately escorted out of the hall, her hands in the air. She was later arrested, according to sources. A spokesman for the organisers said the woman was not accredited for the meeting. "Our staff denied her access before she later rushed past security. An ISRI staffer then stopped her as she approached the stage. She was then handed over to law enforcement," ISRI spokesman Mark Carpenter told AFP. He added: "We are grateful that Secretary Clinton continued in a professional manner to share her firsthand knowledge and experience of how the recycling industry has a positive impact on the economy and environment." The most famous shoethrower of recent years was the Iraqi journalist who hurled his own footwear at president George W. Bush at a press conference in Baghdad in December 2008. Muntazer al-Zaidi was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a head of state. That was reduced to one year on appeal, and his sentence was cut further for good behavior.

Talking fondly about working closely with child actor Parth Bhalerao in the film, he said: "I believe the younger generation has a much brighter future than we had. “Look at them… their confidence, they rarely have inhibitions while acting or in general in front of the camera. That’s something which keeps us older actors on our toes! The younger lot impresses me with their sharp skills and how confidence comes naturally to them.” The film's message, he Resonates with the current situation in India and urges everyone to go and vote. We should all be a part of the system and participate actively. The fearlessness and simplicity of the child protagonist should inspire and motivate us." Speaking about the genre of childrencentric films in Indian cinema, he explained, “Although children's films

Scroll that mentions Jesus’s wife is not a fake A ancient piece of papyrus that contains a mention of Jesus' wife is not a forgery, according to a scientific analysis of the controversial text, US researchers. The fragment is believed to have come from Egypt and contains writing in the Coptic language that says, "Jesus said to them, 'My wife...'" Another part reads: "She will be able to be my disciple." Its discovery in 2012 caused a stir. Since Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, it renewed long-running debates over celibacy and the role of women in the church. The Vatican's newspaper declared it a fake, along with other scholars who doubted its authenticity based on its poor grammar, blurred text and uncertain origin. Never before has a gospel referred to Jesus being married, or having women as disciples. But a new scientific analysis of the papyrus and the ink, as well as the handwriting and grammar, show that the document is ancient. "No evidence of modern fabrication ("forgery") was found," the Harvard Divinity School said in a statement. The palm-sized fragment likely

dates to between the sixth and ninth centuries, and could have been written as early as the second century CE (common era), said the study results published in the Harvard Theological Review. Radiocarbon dating of the papyrus and a study of the ink using Micro-Raman spectroscopy was done by experts at Columbia University, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "The team concluded the papyrus' chemical composition and patterns of oxidation are consistent with old papyrus by comparing the GJW (Gospel of Jesus' Wife) fragment with a fragment of the Gospel of John," said the study. "Current testing thus supports the conclusion that the papyrus and ink of GJW are ancient." The origin of the papyrus is unknown. Karen King, a historian at Harvard Divinity School, received it from a collector - who asked to remain anonymous back in 2012. King, a historian of early Christianity, said the science showing the papyrus is ancient does not prove that Jesus was married.

PAPYRUS: The fragment measures four by eight centimeters (1.6 by 3.2 inches) is believed to have come from Egypt

"The main topic of the fragment is to affirm that women who are mothers and wives can be disciples of Jesus - a topic that was hotly debated in early Christianity as celibate virginity increasingly became highly valued," King said in a statement. "This gospel fragment provides a reason to reconsider what we thought we knew by asking what the role claims of Jesus's marital status played historically in early Christian controversies over marriage, celibacy, and family." King said its late date -- written

centuries after Jesus's death -means the author did not know Jesus personally. Its crude appearance and grammatical errors suggest the writer had no more than an elementary education, she added. Leo Depuydt, a professor of Egyptology at Brown University, wrote an article, also published in the Harvard Theological Review, describing why he believes the document is fake. "The papyrus fragment seems ripe for a Monty Python sketch," he wrote.

He noted grammatical errors and that the words "my wife" appear to be emphasized in bold letters, which are not featured in other ancient Coptic texts. "As a student of Coptic convinced that the fragment is a modern creation, I am unable to escape the impression that there is something almost hilarious about the use of bold letters," he wrote. King published a rebuttal to Depuydt's criticisms, saying in part that blotted ink was common and that the letters below "my wife" are even darker.

Pakistani Taliban plot to assault Islamabad The Pakistani Taliban will coordinate with Islamist activists at major seminaries in or near the capital, Islamabad, to launch attacks if peace talks with the government fail, police said in a report. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took power last year promising to end Pakistan's insurgency through negotiations. Talks got going in February but have achieved little. The Pakistani Taliban, allied with but separate from the Afghan Taliban, are fighting to overthrow the government and impose a strict version of Islam on the nucleararmed nation of 180 million people. They called a ceasefire beginning on March 1 to facilitate the talks but it officially ended on Thursday. It is unclear if the ceasefire will be extended. Police said in the report that two well-known seminaries would support attacks in the capital and its twin city of Rawalpindi if the talks break down and the military moves against Taliban bases in areas bordering Afghanistan. "If talks between the government

Islamabad is one of Pakistan’s most iconic cities

and the Taliban fail - like-minded religious seminaries and mosques have been given the target of fully contributing in carrying out attacks," police said in the report, which was prepared last month. Police identified two well-known seminaries, or madrasas, on the

outskirts of Islamabad. They said the two had already helped launch several attacks, including a 2009 assault on the army's headquarters in Rawalpindi. One is led by a cleric called Azizur Rehman Hazarvi. It provides "brain washing courses and lessons on

sacrificing oneself for jihad", police said in the report. The other is run by Fazlur Rehman Khalil, who is on a U.S. terror watch-list and signed a 1996 fatwa or decree from Osama bin Laden in which he declared war on the United States.

At Khalil's seminary, commanders provide "jihadi weapons training classes" to students from the ethnic Pashtun tribal areas which have long been militant recruiting grounds, police said. The two seminaries also host fighters who come to carry out attacks and help with "all last minute preparations", they said. Militant fighters have set themselves up with activists at hardline mosques in Islamabad before. In 2007, more than 100 people were killed when security forces assaulted the Red Mosque in the heart of the capital after well-armed fighters from the tribal areas and followers of the mosque's radical clerics running a Taliban-style movement refused to surrender. Police and government spokesmen declined to comment on the report but security officials who requested not to be identified said the information was correct. One police officer said 20 seminaries in Rawalpindi were being investigated for similar Taliban links.

A rude boy, a coconut and a freshie share a flat in London

Three Shades of Brown…

Writer Shai Hussain on ‘Three Shades of Brown’ and more…

By Anush Ansari

anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Following the success of his radio plays and ‘Til Jihad Do Us Part’ broadcast on writer/director Shai Hussain presents his newest venture. ‘Three Shades of Brown’ is a new comedy web series about a ‘rude boy’, a ‘freshie’ and a ‘coconut’, who move into a flat together in London.

Here be a full house of highly conflicting personalities that can only spell doom. It stars some of the best of upcoming Brit-Asian talent: Omar Khan (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), Muzz Khan (Four Lions) and Navinder Bhatti (the upcoming Amar Akbar & Tony).

The plot When Harry tells his best friend Ravi that he's moving to the capital to start a new job, Ravi advises him to move in with his close family friend, Nas. However, when Ravi's girlfriend dumps him, he accompanies Harry to London and looks to stay on the sofa until (he expects) his ex will eventually realise her mistake. Nas, unimpressed with both Harry’s straight-laced personality and Ravi’s unexpected length of intrusion, soon plans to throw them both out. Unfortunately for him, an unexpected twist in events may have him begging for them to stay.

Launching on Monday 14th April 2014 with eight weekly webs series instalments

Tell us about your background. In terms of culture, my parents are Indian and Muslim. I was born over here. My passport says I'm British, my tastes are pretty Indian and my name says I'm Muslim. I wouldn't say I'm completely one or the other, but there are definite influences from all three. I first fell in love with the arts whilst pursuing a Maths degree in Manchester, due to unforgettable support from the Contact Theatre, which was next door. After finishing, I went travelling where I discovered my love for writing that led me to doing an MA Screenwriting at the Northern Film School in Leeds. One of my feature film projects got to the finals of a competition called "The Big Pitch" in 2008 and attracted the attention of Gordon Anderson, the director of the first series of ‘The Inbetweeners’. Simple to say, there have been some real highlights in my career, but what I've always wanted to do is write about the British-Asian world I know - without the melodrama, but equally without the sugar-coating. TV and Film is still my ultimate goal to aim for as they're the most widely viewed formats,

but until that day comes, I'm hoping ‘Three Shades of Brown’ will convince the gatekeepers that there is an audience for this kind of product. How did you come up with this storyline? The characters in my comedic stories are generally stereotypes. During my Screenwriting MA in 2005, I developed a sitcom set at the University of Manchester about eight very different students living in a halls of residence: a geek, a girlnext-door, a rude boy, a slut, a rugger-bugger, a goth, a hippy and a daddy's girl. For comedy, I feel the best characters are those that are fully exaggerated and the best way to break down stereotypes is by exposing them for just how silly they are. For ‘Three Shades Of Brown’, I felt it was due time that this was done for the British-Asian youth of today, and to also show that not all Asian guys are the same. I feel that due support for ethnic stories is still scarce for the British TV and film industries. But films like ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘The Best Marigold Hotel’ show that there is real strength in the brown pound.

Writer Shai Hussain on ‘Three Shades of Brown’ and more… Continued from page 63

It was through sheer exhaustion from rejection after rejection that, after slowly deliberating giving up writing altogether, I decided that if nobody else was going to give me a chance to prove myself, I'd create that chance myself. So, I went through all of my concepts and decided that ‘Three Shades of Brown’ would be the one I could most likely to justice on a tiny budget. How did you loop in the cast? Muzz Khan, who plays the rude boy Nas, I met over a creative forum website years ago. I was writing ‘Three Shades’ when I saw Muzz in Ishy Din's amazing theatre piece ‘Snookered’, and I instantly felt that I'd found my Nas. Similarly for Ravi, it was writing for Omar Khan's character in the Zing TV soap

‘Cloud 9’, that I knew that Omar could sleepwalk the role. Thankfully, they both accepted to do it. Harry was trickier to cast as due to time logistics, the actor I primarily had in mind didn't work out. I put the word out on different forums that we were looking to audition the part, and luck came in the form of Navinder Bhatti. Rez Kempton, who worked with Navinder on the upcoming film ‘Amar, Akbar & Tony’ put us in touch, he auditioned, and he was perfect. I can't imagine anyone else in the role now. How have you funded this venture? Completely off my own back with the money I make DJing and doing extras work from time to time. Family members did offer to help me fund the film, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this off my own back - at least for the first one. No sponsors, no investors, no producers - at least for the first series, just so I can set the tone and the world that I always saw it. It isn't so much criticism I can't handle - it's the wait for approval. However, my executive producer, Pulkit Datta (based in New York) has always been at hand to give constructive criticism without destroying my vision, and huge kudos to him for his patience and his eye for detail. Everyone bar the sound recordist (who almost halved his wages) was

paid expenses only for this, and some of the supporting roles even waived their expenses! I truly had a great, talented, patient and passionate team on board for this. Looking back now, I seriously can't wait to start production on series 2. The goal has always been to show that there's an audience for this kind of show. The world of the webseries is still growing in the UK, but it’s massive in the US at the moment. With the right product and the right niche, the web can do wonders, and Three Shades of Brown hopes to repeat the success of Humza Arshad's ‘Diary of a Bad Man’. What has your role been in the production? In terms of what I did for the project, I produced, directed, financed, edited, wrote music for, location scouted, marketed, designed, took care of PR, and about to go into distribution. As a no-budget webseries, I tried to take care of what I can do personally as I hate asking people to work for free. I owe so many people so much for their advice and assistance; and, obviously thanks to the press… such as the Asian Express, who have given me such a great platform to get the word out there. I promised myself I wouldn't cry. (sob) Why did you decide to webcast? I had little luck with producers.

April 2014 - 2nd Edition

One producer felt the flatmatessitcom had been done to death. Another said the characters were very believable and well-written but couldn't warm to them. Another said they loved the upbeat dialogue but it didn't feel the right kind of project for them. Another said that she loved it, but had another similar sitcom in production. It was the final feedback that was the last straw really. I'd had so many experiences of concepts I believed turned down time and time again, just to see a similar idea pitched by a seasoned writer to get made two years down the line, that I was determined not to see it happen again. What have you learnt from making ‘Three Shades of Brown’? Whilst on my MA, I wrote an action thriller called ‘Eye for an Eye’ where two brothers fought each other on the other side of terrorism - a kind of British remake of ‘Deewar’. Then ‘Britz’ came out. During the same time, I wrote ‘Small World’, my freshers-set sitcom set in Manchester. It was the script that bagged me an agent five years later, yet nobody would touch it. Then, when my agent started sending it out, we learnt that there was a little show called ‘Fresh Meat’ about to come out that was too similar. Then I thought I'd hit the jackpot with NBC Universal and my radio sitcom ‘Generasians’. After a year of development and getting through to the final round of commissioning with BBC Radio 4 twice, ‘Citizen Khan’ came out and it was history. I couldn't allow the same thing to happen to ‘Three Shades of Brown’. I hope the readers of Asian Express enjoy it.

And there was never any doubt about who she would marry, as her parents were keen to match her with Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) - the son of a close family friend.

FILM: Total Siyapaa DIRECTED BY: Eshvar Nivas GENRE: Comedy/Drama STAR CAST: Ali Zafar, Yami Gautam, Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher, Sara Khan A young man’s desperate attempts to impress his girlfriend's family go hilariously awry in this madcap romantic comedy. Good-natured Pakistani boy Aman (Ali Zafar) is in love with beautiful Indian girl Asha (Yami Gautam). So much so that he has decided to travel to London to ask Asha's parents for her hand in marriage. Alas, her mum (Kiron Kher) and dad (Anupam Kher) are a deeply conservative couple. Everything goes swimmingly until they discover that daughter's handsome young suitor's nationality.

But as the wedding draws closer, Vijay drops a bombshell. He calls the whole thing off, citing a mismatch of interests and lifestyles. Devastated, Rani makes a bold decision. She opts to go on honeymoon alone, leaving the country for the very first time! Along the way, she learns more about the world - and herself. Vikas Bahl's spirited Hindi drama was filmed in 145 colourful locations, taking in European capitals Paris, Amsterdam and London.

The story of Gulaab Gang is reportedly based on the life of Sampat Pal Devi, a self trained activist from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh who was married off as a child and then grew up to fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, domestic violence in the villages of India. In course of time, many women joined her and now she has a force of over 10,000 women who are called the Gulabi Gang. A few years back, with some help from a French NGO, Sampat's fight came into the limelight leading to media coverage and a documentary filmed on her. In the trailers, like we had assumed, Dixit kicks ass. She is shown wielding a baton with a ferocity normally associated with Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar. She is seen flinging men with one effortless slap. She is seen beating up men. Evidently, Sampat's story has been adapted to suit the requirements of a Bollywood entertainer. Likewise, Dixit is also seen dancing (we are not complaining one bit about that though!). However, what is probably the

most refreshing and interesting bit in the trailer is its villain - Juhi Chawla. Yes, you heard right. Juhi is indeed who Madhuri is pitted against in the film. And oh boy, isn't she delicious as the soft spoken, nearly-adorable, baby voiced woman whose smile is pure evil gold! Juhi seems to be playing the part of a politician who takes on Rajjo (Madhuri) and embarks on an insidious journey to destroy the latter's clout. What makes the film so much more interesting than anything else, is instead of a woman versus man stereotypical battle, Gulaab Gang promises to be a deft exploration of feminity and the woman as an ambitious, strong, sinister, vulnerable entity. While Madhuri turns out to be a real hero with all her brave action sequences, Juhi Chawla has also amazed people with her cunning politician avtar in the movie. With all those bold dialogues and action, the movie is going to be one of the valiant choices of both the Bollywood divas, as far as their filmy career is concerned.

where the majority of the houses are being bought by a political party. They are being forced to sell their house. The movie takes a turn when the family decides to stand up to guard their rights and their country and starts a hunger strike and a friend of the family is killed during their protest. It is then that a simple man evolves as a leader of ordinary people and becomes a threat to all the political figures of the nation.

RELEASE DATE: 11/04/2014 The Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, returns to delight audiences of all ages as he returns to the silver screen in a lead role as his much loved, paranormal avatar makes a comeback in ‘Bhootnath Returns’. ‘Bhoothnath Returns’ takes Bhoothnath’s story forward as the paranormal character returns to ‘Bhoot World’, where he is greeted with taunts and condemnation from the other ghosts for bringing disrepute to the ghost-community for getting bullied by a kid on Earth. Post the humiliation, Bhoothnath (Amitabh Bachchan) decides to redeem himself by returning to Earth to seek vengeance by scaring a

bunch of kids. His search leads him to Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao), a kid from the slums who happens to be the only person who can see him. They agree to help each other but their friendship embroils them in a cause bigger than they had ever imagined. To move ahead, they will need to take on one of the country’s most powerful and corrupt politicians,

Bhau (Boman Irani). The Lok Sabha elections are nearing and Bhau’s victory is a mere formality, or is it? In a world where the common man is afraid of politics, will a common man’s ghost overcome his fear to stand up for what’s right and fight against injustice? TOP SECRET Mercedes tight-lipped about its SLC AMG deemed a ‘Porsche 911 Turbo contender’ With the SLS production ending this year the final details of the new SLC AMG are soon to be revealed SPY SHOT: Mercedes are keeping the details of the SLC AMG, codenamed C190, a closely guarded secret for now

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Mercedes-Benz is still keeping tight-lipped about its Porsche 911 contender, rumored to be called the SLC, however spy shots gives us our best look yet at the sporty coupe. Production of the marque’s flagship sports car – the SLS - will be ending in July this year, and what we hear is that

development of the new SLC (codenamed C190) is steadily progressing. Some are suggesting that the new car could be called the Mercedes GT instead. From what we can tell, the SLC will wear a face similar to recent Mercedes products with large, LEDtrimmed headlights, aggressive fascia air inlets and an upright grille. More importantly, the SLC's rump is coming into focus with its large hatch and integrated exhaust outlets, but you can also make out the shape of the horizontally oriented taillights.

Mercedes tight-lipped about its SLC AMG deemed a ‘Porsche 911 Turbo contender’ Continued from page 75 There are still plenty of uncertainties about the SLC/GT, however its been predicted that it will use a new 4.0-litre, modular V-8 with a twin-turbocharger

setup. This engine is touted to deliver about 500 horsepower, pitting it against the mighty 911 Turbo. Two more engines will be available on the SLC/GT AMG, a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V-8 and a Black Series

version with a 6.2-litre V8 with just under 600 horsepower. According to sources, the new Mercedes-Benz is to be unveiled at the German Grand Prix later this year and will go on sale in 2015.

Nurburgring sold for £84m

The world’s most famous racetrack - the Nurburgring, known as ‘Green Hell’, has officially been sold. Capricorn, a Dusseldorf-based parts company, has purchased the 12.9-mile track for a reported €100 million (£84 million), almost two years after the racetrack first went up for sale. The deal also includes an investment of around €25 million (£20 million) to help further develop the site and improve security. The new owners will launch a new company called Capricorn Nurburgring, which will manage the new business of 1st January 2015.

"As an enthusiastic motor sport fan, the Nurburgring has always been a passion of mine," said Dr. Robertino Wild, managing partner of the Capricorn group. “We have identified the enormous potential of this unique race venue and would like to optimise the existing structures, but above all turn the vision of an Automotive Technology Cluster into reality.” Built in 1927, the Nurburgring covers an area of 937 acres and has hosted over 30 Formula 1 races on its Grand Prix circuit. Nestling within the confines of the track, manufacturers have also built development centres where cars can be tuned after testing.

Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake super estate revealed Jaguar unveils a more potent version of its most practical model, the XFR-S Sportbrake is powered by a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8. Jaguar has kept us guessing about whether it would build a highperformance XF Sportbrake, but we now have an emphatic answer. Rather than simply building a XFR Sportbrake, Jaguar has skipped straight to XFR-S specification for the most practical model in its range. Set to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show, the Sportbrake joins the XFR-S Saloon and XKR-S as the third member of the ballistic R-S family. Like its siblings it uses a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 producing 680Nm of torque – enough to rocket it from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the XFR-S Saloon, and on to an identical top speed of 186mph, despite weighing around 90kg more. Jaguar’s designers have translated the Saloon’s pumped up styling into the Sportbrake’s more sensible bodystyle, minus the wild rear wing of course. It does get a much smaller roof spoiler though, along with a deeper front bumper and front splitter to boost downforce at high

speeds. Extended and more sculpted updates. side sills, a deeper rear bumper, 20Inside there’s sports seats covered inch alloys and a race car-style rear in stitched carbon leather and a diffuser complete the exterior sprinkling of R-S badges, but the

Sporbrake’s impressive interior space remains. That means 60:40 split folding rear seats and a boot that extends to 1,675-litres with the

seats down. Although the XFR-S Sportbrake uses the same basic chassis as the XFR-S Saloon, the rear suspension has been tuned specifically to cope with the extra weight. Thanks to stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer springs and dampers and a new front suspension knuckle, overall ride stiffness is up by 30 per cent compared to the standard car. Wider tyres, bigger brakes and an electronic differential should ensure it goes, stops and turns just as well as the Saloon. It won’t be quiet either – the central silencer in the exhaust has removed and replaced with an ‘Xpiece’ for a booming exhaust note and crackles on the overrun. Jaguar has also made changes to the standard XF range - introducing a R-Sport model. It gets the looks of a performance model, with a chunky bodykit, but is only available with the 161bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine returning 57.7mpg and 129g/km. Order books for the new XF models open on April 1, with the XFR-S Sportbrake priced at £82,495. Its closest rivals will be the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes E63 AMG Estate.

Rolls-Royce: Plug-in hybrid? By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Imagine this car, with an electrical cord. It could happen, and fairly soon. Although fuel efficiency is just about the last thing that a Rolls Royce brings to mind, but the company may change that with a plug-in hybrid, of all things. The good chaps in Goodwood know they face a challenge in meeting rising fuel efficiency standards and tightening emissions, so they’re experimenting with various ways of squeezing more miles from every drop of petrol. Company CEO Torston Müller-Otvos has said that making a hybrid is essential, not due to customer demand perhaps, but through legal regulation on emissions.

Rolls hasn’t mentioned any specifics for such a car, which is clearly an idea at this point, but it a good guess-timate suggests we might see it within three years. But if a Phantom plug-in came to pass, it almost certainly would use drivetrain components from corporate parent BMW, which has a range of hybrids, the i3 and i8 electric vehicles, and a plug-in setup (featuring a four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor) for the X5 eDrive. For those of you who are thinking that Rolls is suddenly going soft, remember that even the LeFerrari has a gas-electric drivetrain, so it’s not like a Phantom with a cord with be a glorified Prius. This wouldn’t be be the first time Rolls has played with electricity. A few years ago, it unveiled the all-electric Phantom

prototype called the 102EX. The absolutely stunning car was a trial balloon that customers promptly shot down. Despite producing more torque than the standard Phantom’s V12, the car’s range, claimed at 120 miles, was just too small for consumers to consider. Many also found the technology incongruous with the marque’s identity, which is a definitive monument to luxury, power, and disposable income. Now, however Rolls say that plug-in hybrid Rolls-Royce would not come with any kind of compromise, and both the recharging times and the range will be top of the agenda. They also say that with the developments in hybrid technology, the issues faced earlier will no longer be a problem.

A record 1,300 runners turned up and braved the cloudy and chilly start to the day to take part in the biggest Keighley BigK 10k race yet. The charity organisers from the hospice Sue Ryder raised a staggering £60,000 from the run,

which was held at Victoria Park in Keighley on Sunday March 30th. All proceeds will go to the Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope – beating totals from the previous five years. The lads at the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) which operates Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia in Bradford didn’t sit back on their laurels. Their ‘Team NADA’ had a 14

strong contingent partaking in the event. Many of the runners had never participated in anything like this before, with the youngest runner Hamza Urfan only 11 years of age. Hamza said: "I really enjoyed the run, raising money for a great cause and hope to God Willing participate in future NADA initiatives."

Part of the NADA group took the opportunity to do some additional fundraising for their 'Minarets Project', which would go towards improving the mosque. NADA say ‘This challenge is a further illustration of our organisation's personal and social development plan so that these young people can grow as individuals and engage in civic renewal.’ NADA’s General Secretary, Nazim Ali says that they strongly believe as

an organization that proactive engagement in community events such as the Sue Ryder Big 10K, is key to creating a vibrant Bradford District in which people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds come together with mutual respect and tolerance. NADA say that they applaud the organisers, race stewards and all associated in putting on this great event in the name of charity and not to mention the amazing spectators who encouraged the runners during the race.

Anwar back on the rise!

MADNI PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL Teaching is good and ensures pupils learn and make good progress and achieve well overtime. The provision for pupils’ welfare, health and safety is outstanding. (Ofsted November 2013)

The Platinum Kid’s got his shine back after much-awaited win Continued from page 84

Speaking to the Asian Express, Anwar says: “After to previous back-to-back it feels so good getting back to winning, but this was a 4x3 against a stronger Hungarian fighter with a high knockout rate. So I was sticking to what I do best and outboxed him. “It feels very rewarding after a rough six months. I have a lot to prove and believe I have loads more to give. Now with a more focused and hungry mind I will strive to achieve my goals.” We asked him if he really does feel like his old self to which he answered: “I feel in great shape and rubbed off some of that ring rust but there's still plenty of work to be done till I'm back to the fighter I was. “But my team were happy with my performance and I'm still learning with each fight, I will only get faster stronger and fitter from here as I'm working harder than ever before.” Anwar stated that he’s been

working a lot harder to get into form and to get to grasps with his boxing career. There was a time when after Anwar’s unfortunate and near-fatal car accident, the medics had said that he wouldn’t get to continue his boxing career ever again. But not born a quitter, Anwar’s determination, hunger and ambition

to get back into the ring surpassed all expectations and erased any doubts anyone had of Anwar’s capability and ambition. Anwar commented: “I train hard, stick to my diet and actually listened to my trainer instead of being so impulsive. No Pain No Gain.” Anwar says that he was back training the very next day for his next fight with opponent Chad Gaynor - a former welterweight prizefighter finalist. “It’s a mouth-watering match up, I have to give him credit for taking up the challenge as it is difficult getting fighters to fight me. This fight will hopefully be for some form of a title over 10x3 and, more importantly, push the winner on to British Title contention onMay 9th. “Chad Gaynor is a great fighter will be hungry to prove himself, and I must say he has a great fighters mentality – he’s ready to fight anyone, as this will be a 50/50 fight bring a lot of potential to the ring.” It looks like the Leeds ‘Platinum Kid’ is out to shine once again.

Chris Allen, Managing Partner of Blacks Solicitors LLP, who are official sponsors for Anwar said: “The Sports Law team at Blacks have supported and advised Adil for the last two years and we are delighted with the progress he has made as a boxer and as a person. “I have every confidence that Adil will be British Champion within the next 18 months. We are proud to have him as a client and a friend. The whole of West Yorkshire should be proud of him.”

Anwar back on the rise! The Platinum Kid’s got his shine back after muchawaited win By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

After a bumpy six months which resulted in to back-to-back defeats, Adil Anwar stepped back in the ring again which resulted in his first win of 2014. The Leeds-stylist said he would win and make his way back in the mix for an opportunity to fight for The British Title and has done just that. In his hometown of Leeds and in front of a crowd on March 28th he dominated the fight to win convincingly and never once looked in trouble but looking more like his former-self. It seemed like the sparkle that we hadn’t seen in Anwar’s last two fights is back, despite this recent bout being a four-rounder. Anwar now knows that he’ll have to put in a lot more work to get fit for the next fight - a ten-rounder which he has on May 9th against Chad Gaynor, who is also as ready and hungry as Anwar.
