FREE car app finds stolen BMW Needle-in-a-haystack situation sees sentimental vehicle reunited with owner
A businessman, who was carjacked at knifepoint last month, says it is a ‘miracle’ that he has been reunited with his car thanks to a simple free phone app. Nadim Hanif, 38, from Leeds, had just concluded a meeting in Birmingham city centre on Wednesday 18th June when his beloved BMW M5 was stolen by a pair of
masked men. The publishing group director was forced out of the car by the armed assailants just after 4pm and left stranded without his phones, money or car. “It was a horrible experience and something I had never encountered before,” he said. “I knew they wanted the car and I knew they were willing to hurt me for it so I thought I must just co-operate with these guys and walk away so I am safe. “They took my wallet, phones, iPad, clothes, and of course the car.” He added: “I was very disturbed but at the same time grateful that nothing had happened to me.”

A British jihadist, who travelled to Syria to fight with a rising insurgent group, has warned that people in the UK should be afraid of the new terror skills he has learned after posting a picture of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on social media. Nasser Muthana, 20, from Cardiff, was shown to be a terrorist in training for the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant (ISIS) group last month after appearing on a recruitment video. Having previously been a prospective medical student in Wales, he joined the militant group in Syria last month with his younger brother Aseel, 17, who has already spoken of his willingness to die fighting. In a chilling photograph uploaded to Twitter earlier this week, via an account believed to belong to Nasser, several homemade bombs were shown with the caption ‘So the UK is afraid I come back with the skills I gained’. He also posted a picture with a chain-like weapon with reference to decapitating an ‘enemy’. On the Twitter account profile, Nasser describes himself as a ‘soldier of the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham [ISIS]’ and that his beliefs are based on ‘a book that guides and a sword that supports it’. Earlier this week, the brother’s devastated father, Ahmed Muthana, 57, said he believes his sons should be brought back to the UK and jailed. “This is not the son I know,” he said. Maybe if they have a heart they’ll come back. “What they are doing or posting online, they are being told to by the people with the guns who feed them, look after them and have control over them. They are trapped in the situation and that makes it hard for them to come back or leave the place. “I think they are being forced into posting these things because my kids are not like this.” He added: “I haven’t had any contact with either of my sons since they left. “I don’t want to speak to them. If they want to speak to me they can reach me but I’m not going to ask them to speak.” In an online interview with the BBC, Aseel said he had no regrets aboutjoining the fight in Syria but did say he would like his family to be there with him. He also described making friends with fellow British jihadists who had travelled to the war torn country to join ISIS and that ‘jihad was obligatory’. Asked how far he was willing to go in the fight, he added:“I can say I am willing to die but Allah knows
the truth behind the words.” Hundreds of Brits are believed to be currently fighting in Syria with an approximate 2,000 travelling from across Europe. In recent days it has been revealed that two of the fellow jihadists in the recruitment video were also young British men – 20-year-old Reyaad Khan, from Cardiff, and Abdul Raqib Amin, 25, from Aberdeen. More than a dozen residencies were raided earlier this month in West London and Watford with one 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and terrorist fundraising offences. On Friday 27th June, Imams throughout the UK disassociated themselves from any hate-preachers who may have been inspiring young British Muslims to go out to fight in Syria. Instead, they discouraged Brits from travelling abroad and said they were united in their condemnation of any individual who encourages hatred and killing of others.
India want answers after ‘spy’ allegations
Indian authorities have called upon US officials to explain reports that Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, may have been spied on by security forces prior to his election earlier this year. Modi, who represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was allegedly spied on during 2010 after a US court allowed the intelligence agency the right to do so. A classified document, leaked by former US security contractor, Edward Snowden, and published this week by the Washington Post, showed Modi was amongst a handful of politicians spied on. The US State Department said it would not comment ‘on every specific alleged intelligence activity’ yet a spokeswoman did add that she hoped the relations between the two countries have not been harmed. In a statement provided by the Indian Foreign Ministry, the body said it summoned a US diplomat to seek assurances that no such activities would occur again in the future.

SCULPTURE: Kareena Kapoor met her own waxwork when it was unveiled in Blackpool in 2011 and said it was both an honour and privilege to be included at the Madame Tussauds attraction
An icon in the world of Bollywood cinema, Kareena Kapoor has joined fellow Indian film stars at Madame Tussauds London, as her wax figure pays a visit to the internationally renowned attraction for the first time. Created in 2011 by a team of sculptors, hair, makeup and wardrobe experts, Kareena’s figure has been travelling the globe in a new Bollywood exhibition, which has visited a number of Madame Tussauds attractions around the world. Arriving in London, Kareena’s wax likeness is in good company, joining some of the biggest names in Indian cinema, including Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachan in a special Bollywood-inspired area. The model originally cost £150,000 to create, taking over four months to complete, and had proved to be a big hit at the Blackpool attraction where it was first launched. On seeing her wax figure for the first time in 2011, Kareena had commented: “It is an honour and a privilege for me to have my own Madame Tussauds wax figure - this is a moment of pride for Indian cinema. “The figure looks incredible and is so life like, I had to do a double take
when I saw myself – they have really done a superb job at capturing my essence.” Fan, Amil Singh, aged 24 from Birmingham on meeting Kareena’s figure commented: “Her figure is amazing – so glamorous just like the real Kareena. “The whole Bollywood experience is magical and a real must see for all, whether they are Bollywood fans or not.” It was actually film legend, Amitabh Bachchan, star of such films as Anand and Deewaar, who was the first Bollywood actor to get his own waxwork model back in 2000. Since his introduction, the number of Asian visitors to Madame Tussauds sites around the world has increased with Indian film stars spreading to several of the famed attractions.

Baby in the street
It was no ordinary lunch break for four members of West Midlands Police staff who ended up helping deliver a baby in the middle of Birmingham city centre last week. Inspector Lisa Robson was doing some shopping on New Street with her colleagues Sergeant Sarah Chater and police staff member Vikki Pountney, when they found themselves at the centre of the medical drama just before 2pm. After seeing a large crowd gathered around someone slumped on the floor outside Primark and fearing the worst, the three women, knowing they are never truly off-duty, went over to investigate – joined by a fourth officer who happened to be passing, Sergeant Julie Rogers. After calling an ambulance and holding back onlookers, they set about gathering blankets and water from nearby shops and reassuring the woman that help was on the way. Fortunately a doctor was just around the corner and helped deliver the baby, leaving the three police officers and their colleague to help protect the woman’s dignity by holding up sheets.
42-month sentence for car thief
A prolific thief who broke into vehicles across the St Peter’s and Park areas of Wolverhampton is beginning a three-and-a-half year jail term. Marvin Downie targeted cars and vans between 14th and 19th May this year stealing sat navs, stereos, sunglasses, laptops, jewellery and mobile phones. The 33-year-old was caught when officers visited a house he was staying at on Merridale Road on 19th May and found a hoard of stolen property. He’d already been linked to another stash of stereos, mountain bikes and phone chargers found at a flat on Newhampton Road West five days earlier. He was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court last month after being found guilty of seven counts of theft from motor vehicle.
Extra protection brought in
Saudi Arabia has deployed 30,000 soldiers to its border with Iraq after Iraqi soldiers withdrew from the area, according to Saudi-owned television reports. The world's top oil exporter shares an estimated 500-mile border with Iraq, where Islamic State insurgents and other Sunni Muslim militant groups seized towns and cities in a lightning advance last month. King Abdullah has ordered all necessary measures to protect the kingdom against potential ‘terrorist threats’, state news agency SPA reported on Thursday. The Dubai-based al-Arabiya said on its website that Saudi troops fanned into the border region after Iraqi government forces abandoned positions, leaving the Saudi and Syrian frontiers unprotected. The satellite channel said it had obtained a video showing some 2,500 Iraqi soldiers in the desert area east of the Iraqi city of Karbala after pulling back from the border.

Businessman fakes death to pocket a million
FAKE: Sanjay’s wife, Anju, handed a bogus death and cremation certificate to insurers in England in an attempt to claim a huge life insurance payout
Financial troubles ‘forced’ couple into life insurance scam By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A man from Hertfordshire, who faked his own death in order to claim more than a million pounds through life insurance, has been jailed for two-and-a-half years. Sanjay Kumar, 46, pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court last month to six counts of insurance fraud, whilst his wife, Anju, pleaded guilty to two counts – she was handed a six month suspended sentence. After Sanjay travelled to India in November 2011, Anju phoned five insurers to tell them of her husband’s death during the trip due to ‘brain fever’. She said he had been in contact with her via email prior to the ‘death’ saying he had been taken ill before telling insurers that he died and was cremated on the 25th November. Yet enquiries conducted by insurers revealed no record of Sanjay being treated for a life threatening illness or having been admitted to hospital. There was also no cause of death certificate, only a bogus document, and no evidence that the crematorium where he was said to have been cremated actually existed. Even the person with whom Sanjay was reported to have stayed with in India denied knowing him. In total, Anju had sent the fake death and cremation certificate to three insurers: Aviva, Scottish Provident and Legal and General, in order to secure a total payout of £1,155,789.38. With the insurers’ enquiries pointing towards an attempted life insurance fraud, Scottish Provident referred the information into the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) which launched its own investigation. IFED detectives established that Sanjay was in significant financial debt, and with several failed businesses behind him, pressure to pay creditors had been building. They also uncovered that Anju had used a Western Union transfer to send £1,500 to her husband in India on 27th November 2011 – two days after she alleged he had died – and that he collected it. They also traced Sanjay as having flown back to the UK from India under the alias ‘Sanjay Vig’ on 17th
August 2012. A short time afterwards, 47-yearold Anju was arrested at the couple’s house on Hempstead Road in Watford. Sanjay was arrested at a police station on 11th September and his mobile phone was seized. Analysis of his phone revealed damning messages detailing the specifics of the fraud. On 28th April 2014 at Southwark Crown Court, Sanjay pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation while Anju pleaded guilty to the same offence relating to invested money that she fraudulently claimed. The couple were sentenced on 17th June. DC Tom Hill, who led IFED’s investigation, said: “Sanjay Kumar’s answer to building up substantial debt was to fake his own death in India and let his wife cash in their investments. “Unfortunately for the couple their tale of supposed tragedy quickly fell apart under scrutiny by insurers and IFED, with the uncovering of one lie exposing several more from the Kumars as they attempted to get their hands on a massive payout. “Now that he is behind bars they will have time to reflect on whether making fraudulent claims is the right way to go when faced with financial troubles.”

Tackling the superbugs
Prime Minister David Cameron called on Wednesday for global action to tackle the threat of drug-resistant superbugs and said Britain planned to take a leading role in finding ways to spur the development of new antibiotics. A world without effective antibiotics would push medicine back into the "dark ages", he said, with routine surgery, treatments for cancer and organ transplants potentially becoming impossible. Cameron announced an independent review led by former Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O'Neill to pinpoint the problems and identify why so few new antibiotics are being developed. O'Neill, who described the job as "a very exciting challenge”, will bring together experts from around the world, reflecting the global nature of the superbug threat. Cameron said he had discussed the issue at a G7 summit of leaders in Brussels last month and won specific support for the initiative from U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
‘NO’ to independence
Scotland looks unlikely to vote for independence in September, researchers say, citing poll data as showing the separatists have been unable to build momentum behind their campaign as decision day nears. A study by the University of Stirling published on Tuesday estimates a 79 percent chance that the people of Scotland will reject the chance to end a 307-year-old union with England, up from 70 percent in April. Earlier in the year some polls had shown the pro-independence Yes campaign closing the gap on the prounion campaign's lead. However, a YouGov poll for the Times newspaper on Tuesday found that backing for the anti-independence campaign had risen, with the Yes campaign struggling to convince voters a split would not hurt the Scottish economy. Professor David Bell, who looked at betting trends among bookmakers for the University of Stirling, said the chance of a No vote on 18th September probably remained between 70 and 80 per cent throughout the first half of the year, even as polls fluctuated.
Cameron ‘can do business’ after EU defeat
Britain can do business with JeanClaude Juncker, Prime Minister David Cameron declared on Monday after failing to prevent EU leaders giving the Luxembourger the bloc's most powerful job in a defeat that could push Britain closer to leaving the EU. Cameron's loss of an unprecedented summit vote he forced over the next European Commission president sharpened concern that the world's sixth largest economy may be sliding towards the exit. Only Hungary sided with Britain in the 26-2 vote. The British leader struck a more conciliatory tone during a noisy session of parliament on Monday, saying he would work with Juncker and did not want to personalise his appointment. But the opposition Labour party charged Cameron's strategy of seeking to reshape Britain's ties with the EU was in tatters.

Did she just Tweet that?
CONTROVERSIAL: Katie Hopkins has always caused controversy in many of her outspoken views but here latest Tweets against Ramadan have angered many across the world
Kate Hopkins’ social media crusade against Ramadan Ramadan is the holy month for Muslims around the world yet one television personality doesn’t seem to understand what it means to respect other’s beliefs. Katie Hopkins, of Apprentice-fame, has long been a controversial character, expressing her outspoken views on morning television shows, reality programmes and in tabloid newspapers. Her latest crusade seems to be targeted at the Islamic community, many of whom are currently observing a period of fasting as the ninth month of the Islamic calendar has arrived. On Sunday evening, the 39-year-old former reality TV star wrote via Twitter: “Ramadan typically brings a spike in violence in Middle East. I get grumpy when I don't eat - but I don't blow things up. Religion of peace?” Her tweet was quickly responded to be tens of people, most of which questioned the choice of sharing such views. One angry Twitter user wrote: “Tell me you are a troll account. Someone can't genuinely be as ignorant as you are being right now,” whilst another added: “There'll be burning effigies of you from here to Karachi now.” Following the Tweet the mother-of-three did not apologise but rather continued on her ‘campaign against Ramadan’, tweeting a picture of a cake shaped as a gun, with the caption: “Following incitement to violence from the new leader of Muslims worldwide here's today's cake to help break the fast.” This was then followed by a further two pictures of cakes alongside similar captions. It is not the first time that the television personality has made remarks which have angered and even bewildered members of the public. On a previous visit to Cambridge University she openly said she ‘doesn’t like fat people’, whilst during a broadcast of This Morning she stated ‘Suicidal prisoners should just kill themselves’.
What they say... Amjad Pervez:
To be honest, it doesn’t matter who has said these things but when any individual makes a statement about another person’s beliefs, one needs to be very sensible about it. Faith is not analytical or a matter of science but spiritual. Atheism, though not a religion, is still a belief system and it must be respected much like every other belief because that is what people regard as their ‘social truths’. I question anybody who wilfully and proactively attacks that. Why would anybody target another person’s faith beliefs in such a way? Yes we do have healthy debates but this example is purely in bad taste especially now during the month of Ramadan. It seems to me that the only reason she has said it is because of the Trojan Horse news, halal debate and ISIS situation in Syria and Iraq which have been covered in the tabloids. I am presuming that she has seen these issues arise and is picking on this subject because they are popular at the moment and she just wants to become more popular. If that is her agenda, a purely personal gain at the expense of community cohesion, people need to make an important judgement call on why she is resorting to such an attack on Ramadan.
Nazim Ali:
It’s disgraceful what she said really and this is the same woman who made the disrespectful comments after the Glasgow helicopter crash last year. It doesn’t help anybody saying these kinds of things during the current climate which we live in where Islamophobia does exist. Fasting is a personal decision; nobody is forced to do it. We do it as a reflective process so perhaps Katie Hopkins should actually try it and reflect upon what she has said – who knows it may even make her become a better person. Based on her history it seems that she is just an attention seeking individual who is hoping to try and make herself seem like an outspoken critic so she can remain in the public eye.

and finally... It was known that a little fall-out had happened between Govinda and his best buddy Salman Khan over the launch of his daughter Narmada’s film career with Punjabi film superstar Gippi Grewal.
Reportedly the relationship between the “partners” soured when Salman, instead of launching Govinda's daughter as planned, launched Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi instead. However, the pair who’ve been friends for years have since patched up.
A student, labelled ‘hardworking, popular and talented’ by the school principal, had jumped to his death from a motorway bridge after becoming overstressed. 16-year-old Mohammed Abdul Razzak was due to sit his GCSEs this summer yet had told his GP on several occasions that he planned to end his life. In January, the Oldham Academy North student walked onto the motorway bridge and plunged 30ft to the ground. Paramedics took him to hospital where he died of his injuries. withdrawn and anxious in his final school year. His mother, Lufta Begum, said her son became distant and spent a lot of time alone on his computer drinking energy drinks and coffee. In a statement she told the inquest: “He was a healthy child, a hard-working, studious young man with a clever demeanour. “He was a young man who kept himself to himself and had very good predictions in terms of his academic achievements. But he did not discuss anything with the family or those close to him.” Mohammed had skipped a mock exam earlier in the year and later handed a letter to his English teacher explaining that he had felt an ‘urge’ to self harm. He was sent to hospital, by the school and child protection services, where he was assessed by psychiatrists for one week. Mohammed was assigned a social worker and had begun to show signs of improvement in his attitude yet on 6th January he took the decision to end his own life by jumping from a motorway bridge on the M60 near Oldham. Recording a verdict of suicide earlier last month, Rochdale assistant coroner, Lisa Hashmi, said: was a healthy, “Mohammed intelligent young man who clearly had a very promising future. “Save his obvious intellect, he was a quiet and reserved individual, however in the autumn of 2013 his mother noticed a change in his demeanour. Needle-in-ahaystack situation sees sentimental vehicle reunited with owner Cover story continued During the attack an onlooker had called the police and within two minutes of the men driving away, three patrol cars had arrived on the scene. Two of the response units went to search for the stolen car whilst the police helicopter was also sent up in the search efforts yet to no avail. “I couldn’t believe it had gone,” Mr Hanif added. “The car had such sentimental value to me and you can’t replace something like that because I had waited so long to get it.” Two days later, Mr Hanif was at home with his family when his replacement phone arrived after contacting the insurers. Knowing that he had already set up a BMW app on his stolen mobile, which alerts drivers where their cars are parked within a specific radius, he once again downloaded the app and decided to head down to the West Midlands with a group of friends to ‘take a chance at finding the car’. “The ‘My BMW’ app can find a car if you are about a mile and a half away,” Mr Hanif explained. “It is designed for when you park in a busy place like an airport but I thought we may as well give it a go. “We headed down on the Friday with the plan of just driving around a few areas and hoping the car would register on the app’s map.”
The group stopped off at Big John’s Lawley Middleway drivethru, Langdon Street, when they arrived in Birmingham. To their ‘amazement’ the phone’s app registered almost immediately showing the car to be parked just over a mile away. After following the signal, they pulled up outside an underground parking lot where they found the blue BMW M5. “I just couldn’t believe it,” Mr Hanif said. “We had no idea if we were even going to find it, let alone within five minutes of arriving in the city. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. “I instantly called the police and whilst I was still on the phone with them two CID officers arrived on the scene before backup came down. It was like something out of a Hollywood movie. “It’s an absolute miracle and so phenomenal. I am so grateful to the police for their help and fast response time and also my friends who helped me find the car and the guys at Big John’s.” Mr Hanif added his warning to fellow drivers on the road and urged them to always put safety first if they were to encounter such a situation. “For anybody driving any car, safety for yourself is the most important thing,” he said. “Don’t try and be a hero, don’t try and fight these people just be safe. “A car can be replaced but you can’t.”

School Library in a box Thousands raised to help stock portable bookshelves in Africa
A Lancashire based charity has been helping to fill the bookcases of some of the less fortunate pupils around the world with the help of some willing local students. The Tauheedul Charity and Book Aid International had initially teamed up to inspire young readers in the developing world by establishing ten portable school libraries on Pemba Island, Tanzania. Now their latest project, launched on World Book Day 2014, hopes to expand the initiative to a further five schools via a ‘School Library in a Box’ scheme. Last week pupils and staff from Blackburn’s Tauheedul Islam Boys' High School presented a cheque worth £13,500 to Book Aid International. The people of Pemba rely
primarily on subsistence farming and small-scale fishing for a living, with many surviving on less than one pound a day. There is only one public library on the island, serving the population of over 300,000. Many schools don’t have any books, let alone a library, with many children on Pemba never visiting a library or reading a storybook before the School Library in a Box scheme was introduced. The project provides portable libraries containing books in Swahili and English to schools that do not have a building that can house a library. Director of Tauheedul Charity, Hamid Patel said: “At Tauheedul, we are passionate about making a difference to the lives of children through education. “Our partnership with Book Aid
International is underpinned by a vision of more children in Africa learning to read and having all the opportunities that this brings. “The Zanzibar School Library in a Box programme is an example of how our partnership is enhancing the lives of thousands of children and young people.” Director of Book Aid International, Alison Hubert added: “Book Aid International’s vision is of vibrant libraries that inspire readers and empower communities. “A School Library in a Box is just such a library – filled with all kinds of books in the children’s mother tongue and in English. “With this support from Tauheedul Charity we are able to provide thousands more children in Zanzibar with the books they need to flourish at school and beyond.”

Airport security to be stepped up across UK

US officials have warned airports in the UK to step up security measures in the belief that terrorists in Syria and Yemen have been developing explosives that could be smuggled onto planes. The warning came on Wednesday night after US security chiefs told Britain’s Department for Transport (DfT) that al-Qaida operatives in the two aforementioned countries had joined forces to develop bombs that would avoid detection and bring down

aircraft. Security at several airports across Europe has been stepped up although no official announcement was made as to which sites would be affected or what triggered the extra precautions. The DfT did confirm that aviation across the country will be affected by the warning but declined to comment any further on what measures were to be put in place. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said the changes were a response to a ‘real time’ and ‘credible’ threat but could not comment on
specific intelligence matters. “Aviation remains an attractive target to global terrorists, who are consistently looking for ways to circumvent our aviation security measures,” the spokesperson said. “As always, DHS continues to adjust security measures to fit an ever evolving threat environment. “Information about specific enhancements and locations are sensitive as we do not wish to divulge information about specific layers of security to
A takaful for students University loans to be developed for Muslim academics
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A Sharia compliant student loan could be introduced to universities across the UK as early as 2016, the Universities Minister, David Willetts, has said. The new financial aid, called a ‘takaful’ would allow Muslim students to receive the same amount as a student loan whilst not defying their religious beliefs. One academic year at university in the UK can cost more than £9,000 so monetary support is often crucial for prospective students who wish to attend. With a ‘takaful’, Muslim students would be required to pay the money back in the same repayment plan as a normal loan student, yet rather than giving the money to the bank, it would be put towards a ‘communal fund’. By using such a scheme, the method of payment is seen as a charitable donation as the funds will then be used once again by future students who opt to use the takaful so all members benefit equally. Rochdale Labour MP, Simon Danczuk, backed the proposals saying no person should be made to choose between their future and religion. “Members can imagine their dismay when they find that the student loans on offer to help with astronomical university fees are not compatible with their religious beliefs,” he said. “Essentially, they are being asked to choose between the future they want for themselves and their own religious convictions. “That is not a choice we should be asking anyone to make. It is an unacceptable situation. “I understand that not all Muslims feel that way and that there is a degree of theological argument about the issue.” The takaful may be available within two years for students wanting to study in the UK according to Mr Willetts. He adds that the plan was being developed by experts in Islamic finance and had been provisionally approved by the Sharia Supervisory Committee of the Islamic Bank of Britain. He said: “It would be a tragedy if any student, particularly a Muslim student, because of concerns about so-called interest rates, were put off from going to university. “We are now indeed examining a Sharia compliant alternative to the conventional student loan.”
those who would do us harm.” According to the US sources, the main concern is that militant groups could try to blow up US or Europe-bound planes by concealing bombs on foreign fighters carrying Western passports who spent time with Islamist rebel factions in the region. London’s Heathrow airport is likely to be affected by any extra measures put in place as it is the world's third busiest airport and the busiest in Europe, serving 191,200 passengers per day.
Runway crash
A rare collision of an airport runway occurred earlier this week as two Ryanair jets collided at London's Stansted Airport, but none of the crew members or passengers were injured. Essex police said they conducted ‘routine breath tests’ on both pilots after the incident early Saturday morning but there were no signs of alcohol. They said no further police action is planned. Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely said the wing tip of one plane and the tail cone of another "made contact" while one plane was approaching the stand and the other was pushing back. He said passengers were put on other planes after a three-hour delay. Airport spokesman Chris Wiggan said both planes were damaged and the Air Accident Investigation Board is handling the inquiry. He said the airport was operating normally despite the incident.
Not so democratic
Preliminary results from Afghanistan's presidential election, due to be announced on Wednesday, have been delayed, an election official said, amid accusations of fraud that threaten to split the fragile country along ethnic lines. Votes from around 2,000 polling stations in the 14th June run-off are to be reviewed and recounted, said Sharifa Zurmati Wardak of the Independent Election Commission (IEC). The contest pitted former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah against former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani. “This will take nearly a week and the final result won’t be announced on time,” Wardak told Reuters. A senior U.N. official said the delay was intended to take account of allegations by Abdullah that his rival engaged in mass vote rigging.

Dementia Friends
Public Health England have teamed up with a leading health charity to launch a new campaign to tackle one of the biggest health issues facing the country, and a growing issue for ethnic minority communities. Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Dementia Friends’ initiative aims to give people understanding of dementia and encourage a whole society response to enable people with the condition to live well. Of the 665,000 people in England and Wales living with dementia, it is estimated that approximately 25,000 are from ethnic minority communities. This figure is expected to rise
significantly as the ethnic minority population ages. By 2026 it is likely to have doubled to nearly 50,000 and by 2051 to over 172,000 – representing a sevenfold increase in 40 years. The Dementia Friends campaign aims to give people an understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia, dispel common myths and stigma associated with the disease and show how others can make a real difference to people living with the condition. Mohammed Muhith, BME Development Officer at the Alzheimer’s Society, explained why it was so important to become educated on the condition.
SUPPORT: Mohammed Muhith, BME Development Officer at the Alzheimer’s Society, says he would like to see one-million ‘Dementia Friends’ within three years
“Statistics out there show that the number of people affected by dementia in BME communities is only increasing,” he said. “Dementia Friends is a threeyear programme, supported by Public Health, and we would like one-million ‘friends’ to join in.
“The friends will have a better understanding of what dementia is and what symptoms to look out for.” If you would like to become a Dementia Friend, please visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk.

June/July 2014 - 1st Edition Nottingham has been selected as just one of five regions across the whole of England to be allocated substantial funding to help improve the lives of tens of thousands of children. As part of the Big Lottery Fund, the city will receive £45million as it takes the lead in a groundbreaking ten-year initiative to see what methods are best for laying the foundations for zero to threeyear-olds to improve their future health, social and educational outcomes. The investment aims to improve the life chances of more than 60,000 babies and children across all the regions, which also include, Bradford, Lambeth, Southend, and Blackpool. Dharmendra Kanani, Big Lottery Fund England Director, explained more about the project and how important it was for children to get the best start in life. He said: “Parents want the best for their children and as a society we know that what happens in the first three years of life profoundly affects a child’s future life chances.
“A poor start in life can affect your health, wellbeing, outlook on life and how you form relationships. “Prevention matters more in the early years as we have a much greater understanding of what can and might improve the life chances of a future generation, that is why this investment is focusing on the three key areas of social and emotional development, nutrition, and language and communication development.” Across Nottingham as a whole, 39 percent of children are classed as living in poverty whilst one in four adults in the city have no formal qualifications. There are also high numbers of children with early onset behavioural problems, chronic health conditions, unhealthy gestation and birth, and poor school readiness. As part of the Big Lottery Fund, the Nottingham CityCare Partnership will receive the sum of £45 million to develop projects including activities and
interventions that will tackle the ‘toxic stress’ caused by family conflict and domestic abuse, parental substance misuse, and parental health problems. Projects will be delivered within pram pushing or toddler tolerance distance of all family homes, utilising 16 local delivery centres across the communities. This will include opening up community buildings in the evenings and weekend. All staff and volunteers in direct contact with children and families will also receive accredited training in communication and engagement, family dynamics and child development, safeguarding and welfare. Meanwhile, a new workforce of paid family mentors will be recruited and trained to work alongside professionals. Tens of thousands of vulnerable babies across the country will now get the chance to have a better start in life following the £215 million Big Lottery Fund investment.

Where’s my bag?
London's Heathrow Airport is working to reunite thousands of bags with their owners after computer failures at its flagship terminal, plunging its new chief executive straight in at the deep end. The baggage system went down at Terminal 5, home to British Airways, last Thursday. The intermittent problems continued until Sunday, the airport said, resulting in bags needing to be sorted manually and producing a huge backlog. “We are on top of the situation,” Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye told BBC Radio, speaking on his first day in the top job. “We are working very hard, doing our best to get our bags back to passengers. There are a few thousand that we are going to get on their way today,” he said.

Chen Guangbiao, who made his fortune in the recycling business, took out newspaper advertisements last week inviting "poor and destitute Americans" to lunch in the park. Several hundred people showed up for the lunch and Chen entertained them by singing "We Are the World," the 1985 charity hit song to fund African famine relief, and a ceremony in which Chen was presented with a certificate declaring him "the world's greatest philanthropist." He announced to applause and cheers he would hand out $300 to each of the guests and also introduced a selfimmolation survivor whose medical treatment he paid for.
Anti-terror campaign in UK mosques
In a fight against radicalisation, mosques across Britain have joined hands to call on young Muslim citizens to stay away from the civil war in Syria. Imams involved in the nationwide antiterror campaign are instead encouraging donations to Syrian cause through legitimate charities. Their message coincides with the holy month of Ramadan, which began last weekend. It comes after a video emerged showing two young Cardiff men urging others to join the jihadist fight in Syria — where tens of thousands have died in three years of war — and in Iraq. These men are believed to be among the 500 Britons fighting in Syria for the militant group ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant).

‘Easy Indian Supermeals for babies, toddlers and the family’
RECIPES: Zainab Jagot Ahmed has already released two cookbooks with her latest, ‘Easy Indian Supermeals for babies, toddlers and the family’ set to be released in September 2014
As children get older their taste buds develop and with that their appetite to experience new foods also grows. Finding the perfect meal for a family to enjoy or for a toddler’s quick snack is often a hard task for even the best cook, yet now with the upcoming launch of a mother-of-one’s latest cook book, that challenge has become a little bit easier. ‘Easy Indian SuperMeals for babies, toddlers and the family' is the first of its kind - an Asianinfluenced cookbook that supports parents on the journey from weaning to toddler meals and snacks, on to post-school quick fixes, and even meals for the whole family to enjoy together. Written by Zainab Jagot Ahmed, mum of three-year-old Aaliyah, the book contains a host of delicious meals derived from Indian recipes which focus on healthy and wholesome flavours with aromatic spices.
Written by a Mum for Mums
Zainab’s two previous books, ‘Indian SuperMeals: Baby & Toddler Cookbook’ and ‘Yummy Indian SuperMeals for Kids: MiniTaster Edition’ were huge successes, and inspired her to launch this latest guide, due to be released in September. Giving parents the choice of a healthy Indian option, which is more than just a curry, she explained why she thought it was so important to release a third book. She said: “It's not all about curry - although there are plenty of delicious recipes including Classic Keema Curry and Mum's Lamb Curry with Sweet Potato. “Many of the recipes are influenced by food cultures including British, Italian and Spanish, all adapted with a hint of Indian, so there are
oodles of taste and flavour still present helping you to raise a well-rounded, healthy eater.” More than just a cookbook, Zainab adds her personal experiences as a first-time Mum in a friendly and light-hearted manner. The book is packed with advice on how to tackle weaning, nutritional information and extensively researched SuperFood and SuperSpice details relevant to the whole family. With fuss-free recipes which are easy to follow, ‘Easy Indian Supermeals for babies, toddlers and the family’ looks set to be a favourite read for families across the UK and is available later this year.

A Royal Honour British Asian’s represented in Queen’s Birthday List An Indian-origin physicist, best known for his work on the Large Hadron Collider, leads the way for the Asian community on this year’s Queen’s Birthday List as he was accorded a Knighthood by the British Monarch. Professor Tejinder Virdee, of Imperial College, was named a Knight Bachelor in the Honours List for his contribution to the field of science. His citation reads: “Professor Virdee is one of the UK's most distinguished physicists and, as one of the creators of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment he has made outstanding contributions to science. “The CMS experiment, at the Large Hadron Collider, CERN, Geneva, has delivered seminal results in particle physics, including the ground-breaking discovery of the Higgs Boson, or the God particle, a particle that gives mass to other particles. “Beyond his innovative work in particle physics, he is also a great campaigner for science, and promoter of science and education in Africa and India.” Professor Virdee was one of the team who helped detect the elusive particle in 2012 after designing one of the two giant experiments, named CMS. In 1990 the idea was originated by four colleagues, before the 61-year-old helped oversee its construction and acted as spokesman for the experiment when it first began recording data in 2006. The detector helped develop new technologies which eventually led to the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle. As well as Professor Virdee, several other Asian representatives have been honoured by Her Majesty the Queen in her latest thousand-strong list. Kavita Oberoi was awarded an OBE for her services to entrepreneurship and start-up businesses. Over the past 12 months, the Derbyshire resident has been operating a business hub to help startup companies as well as launching an enterprise academy at Burton College. Mrs Oberoi said she was shocked to have received the award, and dedicated it to her mother, Kalish Vasdev, who she thanked for pushing her into education and to chase her dreams. “I thought these awards were only given out to people when they are in their seventies and eighties so yes it did come as a big surprise,” the 44year-old said. “I dedicate it to my mum because I came from a background where girls weren’t really supposed to go out and get educated and get a good job. “After my father died, my mother pushed me into my studies and work and helped me break barriers which women, certainly in my family, had never broken through before.” In total 1,149 people were recommended to the Queen for an award, with 30 coming from an Asian background.

Hajj fraud warnings
British Muslims booking trips to Mecca this October to celebrate Hajj are being warned about the threat of fraudsters trying to con them with bogus travel packages. City of London Police is this week launched a national campaign this week targeted at keeping people out of the clutches of fraudsters as they search for the best deals to take them to Saudi Arabia for what, for many, will be a once in a life-time trip. The focus is on local engagement, with officers from forces in England, Scotland and Wales speaking to Muslim community leaders and distributing Hajj fraud prevention leaflets in residential areas, mosques and at several airports. Each year up to 25,000 British Muslims travel for Hajj spending around £125 million on their pilgrimages.

Prime Minister’s Ramadan Message
I want to send my very best wishes to everyone observing the holy month of Ramadan. This is an incredibly special time of year for Muslims at home and abroad: a time for charity, for contemplation and community. Charity is one of the things that Islam is all about. Here in Britain, Muslims are our biggest donors – they give more to charity than any other faith group. We see this spirit of giving all year round, from the mosques running sports clubs for local children to the Muslim groups selling poppies for Remembrance Day, to those people from around the country who put their wellies on, rolled their sleeves up, and went to help the families hit hardest by this winter’s storms. Ramadan is a time when that spirit comes to the fore and I am so proud when I hear, every year, about the millions of pounds raised for good causes for those less fortunate than us here in Britain, and those who are suffering in wars and in famines overseas. Ramadan is a time for contemplation to fast, and to pray, and to think deeply about others. This Ramadan, I hope that we can reflect upon a key aspect of our shared history: the bravery of those who fought and died for our freedoms nearly 100 years ago. Just days after Eid, we will
be marking 100 years since the First World War. More than a million men and boys from India fought with our troops during that conflict and many thousands of them were Muslims. They travelled across the world to fight to defend our freedom guided and sustained by their bravery, comradeship, and, above all, by their faith. Their selflessness and their courage helped to secure the liberties we all enjoy today so this Ramadan – and this centenary – we will remember them and reflect upon their sacrifice. Ramadan is a time for community. And there is nothing that exemplifies this more than those nightly iftars when the fast is broken, the dates are opened, and all that great food is served. Last year I was delighted to see how many community iftars were taking place across the country in mosques and in community centres, in parks and even in tents. Again this year Government is supporting the Big Iftar programme with hundreds more communities, from Leeds to Luton, Woking to Manchester, throwing open their doors so that people of all faiths and none can break bread and get to know their neighbours. So wherever you are this holy month I wish you Ramadan Mubarak.

Chancellor steps down Eight years after accepting the reins of Chancellor at the University of Bradford, Imran Khan has announced he will step down from his position. The famed sportsman-turn-politician will leave his role on 30th November after being installed as the fifth chancellor in December 2005, succeeding Baroness Betty Lockwood. Mr Khan’s role at the place of education had been questioned by some in the past, with his political commitments in Pakistan taking up more and more of his time. During his time at the helm, one of the 61-year-old’s first duties was to lay a foundation stone for the university’s new Institute of Cancer Therapeutics (ICT). He has helped forge close links between the ICT and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Pakistan which remain today. This partnership has also seen a research student from the hospital in Pakistan complete her PhD in cancer research at Bradford. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, Professor Brian Cantor, spoke of his gratitude of Mr Khan and thanked him for all his support over the years. He said: “Imran has played a critical and important role for us as Chancellor of the University over an extended period of time. He has been a truly outstanding ambassador for the University and a wonderful role model for our students. “He has awarded degrees to many students here at Bradford, and has also set up one of the fastest growing colleges in Pakistan, Namal College, where
students also receive University of Bradford degrees. “From discussions I have had with Imran, I know he is proud to have served as our Chancellor for the past eight years and is thankful of the support and advice we have given him in setting up Namal College. He looks forward to continuing to work in partnership with the University. “We are extremely grateful for the support that Imran has given the University over the past eight years. I am confident that his support and our strong relationship will continue into the future.” Imran Khan said: “It has been my honour to serve as Chancellor of the University of Bradford. This has been a rewarding and informative experience and one that I will cherish.” A Chancellor acts as a figurehead for the University’s activities and also appeals to, and provides a role model for, the various constituencies the University serves. These include its students and its local, national and international stakeholders. The University will now begin its search for a new Chancellor as it looks ahead to its 50th anniversary in 2016.

Remembering the forgotten Thousands sign petition calling for day of remembrance By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Thousands of people have signed an online petition which calls upon Prime Minister David Cameron to ‘give a day of remembrance’ to the victims of honour crimes across the UK. More than 95,000 names were signed to the campaign, colaunched by Cosmopolitan Magazine and charity Karma Nirvana, who provide support to victims and survivors of forced marriage and honour based abuse. Following its success, a second petition has now also been set up, directed at Home Secretary Theresa May, which also requests a day of memory to remember all those victims of honour based violence. It is proposed that the date should be on that of the birthday of a murdered Bradford teenager who was killed by her parents in an honour killing in 2003. Shafilea Ahmed was killed at the age of just 17 after becoming ‘too westernised’, despite warning a number of agencies that her life was in danger prior to her death. Chief executive of the Karma Nirvana charity, Jasvinder Sanghera, says Shafilea was an innocent victim of a ‘terrible crime’. She hoped that by having the day of remembrance on Shafilea’s birthday it would ensure that her memory lived on. “What we need to remember is that Shafilea was murdered simply for being a normal kid in Britain and embracing all that it stands for,” Miss Sanghera said. “She was at risk of being killed and forced into a marriage because of this and despite telling agencies she was in danger, nothing was done. “Her family buried her knowing that it was because of them that she had died, they had killed her. “We want this day to keep her memory alive and pay respect to all the girls out there whose memory may have been erased over time.” Karma Nirvana’s helpline receives more than 800 calls a month although official statistics currently suggest that only one
honour-based killing takes place in the UK every month. Miss Sanghera believes that due to such violence often taking place in the home, it is a ‘hidden crime’ and that actual figures could be a lot higher. “We don’t know how many unmarked graves there are out there or how many people have been flown abroad but we do know that honour-based violence is still happening in the UK,” she said. “We get hundreds of calls every month and hopefully by calling upon the Home Secretary and Prime Minister to acknowledge the victims, people, especially children, can become educated on the crime.” She added: “As of last month, forced marriage is officially recognised as a crime which is fantastic. We campaigned and lobbied for that decision to be made and now we want a day of remembrance for the victims. “I urge everyone to sign this latest petition to the Home Secretary and help us get a day to remember for these honourable human beings.” If you have been affected by honour-based abuse, forced marriages, or are currently a victim of the crime, you can contact Karma Nirvana for support on their helpline at 0800 599 9247.

Indian antibiotic recall
US drug-maker, Mylan, is recalling batches of the injectable antibiotic ‘clarithromycin’ made in India due to possible impurities, Britain's healthcare regulator said last month. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, said the decision was due to the potential for small particles of white material to be present in individual vials. The Mylan recall is being made on behalf of Strides Arcolab International and relates to Agila-branded supplies, the MHRA added. The Pennsylvania-based company bought Agila, a unit of India's Strides Arcolab, for more than £940m last year. The issue with the Agila antibiotic follows a series of quality problems affecting medicines manufactured in India that have tarnished the country's reputation as a supplier of cheap generic drugs.
‘British values’ must be taught

A failure to promote ‘British values’ in a muscular way is allowing extremism to grow in the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron has said. “We need to be far more muscular in promoting British values and the institutions that uphold them,” Cameron said as he backed education secretary Michael Gove's plans to put British values at the heart of the national curriculum. Rejecting the moral relativism of some of his critics, he said: “A genuinely liberal country believes in certain values, actively promotes them and says to its citizens: this is what defines us as a society.” Cameron's comments came as authorities had found that ‘a culture of fear and intimidation has taken grip’ at some Birmingham schools. Cameron also announced plans to teach all school pupils about the Magna Carta in response to allegations of extremism at schools in Birmingham. Asian

Student overcomes brain tumour to land ‘dream job’
June/July 2014 - 1st Edition
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
An engineering graduate is on the road to victory after successfully obtaining his ‘perfect job’ with one of the most prestigious companies in the world. Aftab Afzal, 27, gained a distinction for his Masters in Electronic Engineering at the University of Huddersfield and now has more reasons to celebrate after landing a job with Rolls Royce.
engineering degree course. Despite initial reservations about travelling to the UK due to the struggles of getting work experience, he said he quickly settled into his role at the university and even landed a work-placement in his chosen industry. He said: “If you are a non-UK national this can often prove very difficult but with the help of the University's placement scheme within the School of Computing and Engineering, in the third year of my BEng degree I took part in a really successful one year workplacement. “I worked as an industrial engineer for Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems in Peterborough where I got hands on experience in my chosen industry. “This shows just how successful the University is at helping students get into work during and after their studies.” Alongside his ‘hands-on’ experience, Aftab was also able to take advantage of the industry standard electronic engineering equipment and facilities available at the university. Since starting at Rolls Royce, he has already been involved in certification of Trent XWB EEC which has been installed on Trent XWB Engine for Airbus A350. The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, specifically designed for operation on the Airbus A350 XWB family, is the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced. Dr Violeta Holmes who supervised Aftab for his Master's degree, praised him for all his achievements. “Gaining a Distinction for his MSc Electronic and Computer Based Systems Design course was such a great achievement given that he had to overcome a serious illness during a part of the course,” she said. “Aftab had the determination and courage to succeed which is inspirational. He is a creative and very capable engineer and so this was recognised by Rolls Royce who have offered him employment.”
Forced marriage criminalised
EMPLOYED: Engineering graduate Aftab Afzal stands proudly after landing the job at Rolls Royce despite battling an illness during his studies
Forcing someone to marry against their will has become a criminal offence as of Monday 16th June. The new legislation has been introduced by the government to help people in England and Wales, but will also apply to UK nationals overseas who are at risk of becoming the victim of a forced marriage. Forced marriage can involve physical, psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse including being held unlawfully captive, assaulted and raped. In 2013, the government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave advice or support related to a possible forced marriage to more than 1300 people. The maximum penalty for the new offence of forced marriage is seven years imprisonment. Law enforcement agencies will also be able to pursue perpetrators in other countries where a UK national is involved under new powers defined in legislation. Home Secretary Theresa May said: “Forced marriage is a tragedy for each and every victim, and its very nature means that many cases go unreported.
Despite having to take a leave from his studies after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, the skilled engineer returned to complete his qualifications and land his dream job. Originally from Oman, Aftab will work at the Birmingham branch of Aero Engine Controls (AEC), part of the Rolls Royce Group, where he will help supply engine control equipment for everything from small auxiliary power units through to the largest turbofan. Speaking about overcoming the challenges which came with his condition, he thanked his family, friends and tutors for their support. “I have now made a full recovery, although I struggled with my speech and had to learn to walk again” he said. “I thought I was going to be out of education for a year but my family and tutors were there to support me all the way.” He added: “If I can do all of this I think anyone can. The support I received from my family and tutor's, especially Dr Peter Mather and Dr Violeta Holmes, was amazing throughout my time here at University. The town is so lovely and friendly as are all the people. “I am now planning on staying in the UK as I have found my dream job and am now married to the love of my life and have a son. I couldn't be happier.” Following in the footsteps of his father, who is a civil engineer in Oman, Aftab has always had a real passion for electronics, even fixing his own PlayStation One games console when he was a young boy. Soon after completing his secondary education from the Pakistan School Salalah, in Oman, Aftab applied to the University of Huddersfield’s
Changes in government legislation set to protect thousands of potential victims
“I am proud to say that the UK is already a world-leader in the fight to stamp out this harmful practice with the government’s Forced Marriage Unit working hard to tackle this terrible practice in the UK and overseas. “Today’s criminalisation is a further move by this government to ensure victims are protected by the law and that they have the confidence, safety and the freedom to choose. “This summer, the Prime Minister will also be hosting the UK’s first summit dedicated to galvanising action against forced marriage and related issues.” The new legislation also makes forcing a UK national into marriage outside the UK an offence under domestic law for the first time. The offence is triable in courts in England and Wales. The new criminal offences will work
alongside existing civil legislation (Forced Marriage Protection Orders FMPOs) allowing victims to pursue a civil or criminal option. FMPOs can already be made by a civil court against any individuals suspected of trying to force a victim into marriage. From today the breach of a FMPO is a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. This will strengthen the existing law by enabling speedier and more effective enforcement action against those who breach the terms of an order. It will still be possible for victims to seek enforcement for breach of a forced marriage protection order by way of the civil court’s contempt powers as an alternative to reporting the breach to the police. Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker said: “Forced marriage is an
appalling form of abuse which crosses borders and cultural boundaries. The scale of reported cases is deeply worrying, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Legislation is the next key step in solving this problem and builds on the hard work already being done by the government and third sector organisations to tackle this practice. “The message from the coalition government is clear - forced marriage is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.” Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom charity, which exists to educate young people about forced marriage, said: “I am delighted that the government has taken action to criminalise forced marriage. “In the most tragic cases, people forced into marriage become domestic slaves by day and sexual slaves by
night. “Today’s announcement sends out a powerful message that this indefensible abuse of human rights will be not be tolerated. “Everyone should have the freedom to choose.” Dr Ash Chand, the NSPCC’s strategy head for minority ethnic children said: “The change in the law to make forced marriage a crime in England and Wales is a huge step forward which we hope will deter those plotting against their own children. “Many young people who call our ChildLine service about this issue are frightened, concerned and feel control of their lives is being wrenched from them. “We have produced an animation that will help allay their fears and encourage them to contact us for help and advice.”

Teenager targeted in gang rape assault
AsianExpress.co.uk
June/July 2014 - 1st Edition
Police are appealing for information after a 17-year-old girl from Slough was ‘brutally’ gang-raped in a wooded area of the Berkshire town. Four men have been arrested following the assault, with two bailed until 3rd August and the other two still held in police custody. A fifth assailant is also wanted by police in connection with the attack on Friday 30th June. On Sunday, Detective Inspector Nicola Hurdley, called for anyone who had seen. She said: “I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen these men in the Chalvey area on Friday night, around early evening, and who may have seen them driving around in a small silver car. “All the men are described as being Asian.” The victim was walking along a residential street with one of the
men, when she stopped off at a local off-licence. From there, the pair were joined by four other men who had arrived in a small silver hatchback, around the junction with Church Street and Chalvey Road West, and continued to walk down a footpath towards the Jubilee River. When the group were surrounded by woodland it was then that the girl was subjected to a shocking gang rape by the five men. Shortly after 9pm the victim alerted the authorities and is still being supported by specially trained officers. Detectives believe the girl did not know any of the men before the attack and are still appealing for information on the whereabouts of the men. Detective Inspector Nicola Hurdley added: “We are still speaking with the girl at this time
to get a full picture of what has happened, but what we do know is that while she was in this wooded area she has been raped by several of the men. “Right now our investigation is focused on identifying the men involved and gathering information about their whereabouts. “There have been no similar offences reported to the Police but I would appeal to anyone who think they saw the victim, the offenders or the vehicle to come forward. I would also like to remind people to be vigilant and take care when out and about on their own.” Anyone with information should contact the Force CID team at Slough via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Line on 101. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Tackling domestic violence
Police in the West Midlands will have a new weapon to utilise from now on as they aim to tackle domestic violence. The force is adopting the use of domestic violence protection notices and orders (DVPNs and DVPOs) which gives officers and magistrates the power to protect survivors following a violent incident. They allow a perpetrator to be banned from returning to a residence and from having contact with the victim for 48 hours initially and then up to 28 days following a magistrates court hearing. The notices are also aimed at allowing the domestic abuse sufferer time to consider their options and get support. Police officers working in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell will be the first to use the civil powers with Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry due to follow in the coming weeks and months. Assistant Chief Constable Carl Foulkes, who oversees the Public Protection Unit (PPU), said: “These new powers are a positive step forward in empowering sufferers by providing them with a ‘cooling off’ period following incidents of domestic abuse. “It gives them the breathing space they need to consider their options and the added assurance of knowing they are not responsible for asking police to impose the orders, because this can be done even without their consent.” Officers from the force’s PPU recieved training on the new legislation as part of a five-day programme at the start of July to ensure they were fully familiar with the powers available to them. The inputs are part of a long-term internal education strategy, aimed at giving police officers the knowledge and confidence they need to tackle crime that affects the most vulnerable members of society - including domestic abuse. ACC Foulkes added: “We’ve made extensive advances in the way we tackle domestic abuse, particularly since our dedicated Public Protection Unit was formed in 2010 and last year we ran Operation Sentinel, a campaign specifically aimed at providing a better service to vulnerable victims of crime. “We’re always looking to improve our performance and are specifically looking at gaining a better understanding of domestic abuse in the West Midlands. As a police force we have excellent local and national partnerships and our combined efforts are working because more victims are now speaking out. “If you’re suffering in silence, please speak out as there are a range of support services available to you from the police and a raft of other agencies. We have specially trained and experienced officers who can offer practical advice and support in all aspects of domestic abuse.” Police and Crime Commissioner Bob Jones said: “We need to do everything we can to ensure that victims are given the right support, to give them confidence that their situations will be handled safely and sensitively. “From 1st October 2014, Police and Crime Commissioners will be responsible for commissioning the majority of victims’ services locally through a budget from the Ministry of Justice.”

Compensation claims likely to rise
Airlines flying out of Britain could face large rises in the number of passengers who can claim compensation for delayed and cancelled flights after a court ruling last month. Britain's air regulator said that airlines would no longer be able to cite standard technical faults as a reason for not paying compensation after a court of appeal ruled in favour of a passenger. It is good news in particular for passengers on flights such as Pakistan International Airlines who have voiced their concerns several times in recent months. The only circumstance when an airline would be able to avoid paying compensation would be if the technical fault was a result of an ‘out of the ordinary’ event such as a lightning strike, extreme winter weather or strike action. Under the current interpretation of the rules, a technical issue which causes flight disruption can be deemed an ‘extraordinary circumstance’ and airlines do not have to compensate passengers. Passengers are entitled to compensation if their flight is cancelled or delayed by more than three hours on arrival.
Speak Hindi not English
Since taking office as India's prime minister two months ago, Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi has taken a clear stand in support of Hindi, pushing for it to replace English as the preferred language of the capital's urbane and golf-playing bureaucrats. Hindi and English are India's two official languages for federal government business, although India's constitution recognises a total of 22 languages. Modi's government has ordered its officials to use Hindi on social media accounts and in government letters. Modi spoke in Hindi and used interpreters in meetings with South Asian leaders last month, and addressed the Bhutanese parliament in Hindi during his first official overseas trip last week. But with more than half of India's 1.2billion people using another language as their mother tongue, the push for Hindi risks widening communication divides in a highly diverse country, especially in the southern and eastern states, where local languages or English are preferred.
Indian Pinter Prize winner
Indian-born British author Salman Rushdie is the winner of this year's PEN/Pinter Prize in recognition of his support for freedom of speech and generous help to other writers, the prize judges said on Friday. The prize, awarded by the British branch of the worldwide writers' association, is named for the late playwright Harold Pinter, who was an ardent advocate of human rights and a fighter for social causes. Rushdie, 67, is probably best known for his 1988 book ‘The Satanic Verses’ which outraged the Islamic world and forced him to take special security precautions after death threats were made against him, including a fatwa issued by Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He also won the prestigious Booker Prize for his second novel, ‘Midnight's Children’, and has been a prolific novelist, essayist and public speaker. “This prize is English PEN’s way of thanking Salman Rushdie not just for his books and his many years of speaking out for freedom of expression, but also for his countless private acts of kindness," novelist and journalist Maureen Freely, chair of judges, said in a statement.

After the success of Make Bradford British, the team at Channel 4 couldn’t resist a second series and despite a host of new characters and a new location, there is at least one familiar face. Bradford’s very own, Rashid Khan, star of the first series, will take up a presenting role in the upcoming ‘Make Leicester British’ programmes. Following on from the original, the concept remains the same, with eight strangers from different cultures and backgrounds all coming together to learn about each other’s cultures. Leicester’s ethnic makeup has undergone significant changes over the past decade thanks to migration, and the city is now one of the first in the country where Britons are no longer a majority. Since Make Bradford British was broadcast in 2012, immigration has become an even bigger political issue. A recent YouGov poll found that immigration is now seen as the ‘most important issue facing the country’ (neck and neck with the economy) and Ukip stormed to victory in last month's European elections on an anti-EU, antiimmigration platform. Leicester has a reputation as a harmonious city and a model of successful multiculturalism. The series aims to find out what the city can teach the rest of Britain, but it also looks at how integrated the new European migrants are and what has changed in the communities where they have settled. With the production process still going on, Rashid Khan said he
June/July 2014 - 1st Edition can’t reveal too many details but did say it was good to be back. “It was overwhelming to be asked back for a second series and I was very excited to hear that there was going to be another,” he said. “I know there’s been a lot of positive feedback from the public wanting to see what has happened to the original cast but instead this series will focus on people in Leicester which I’m sure will still be very good. “As with the first one, it is an eye-opener because if you are going to put eight strangers together from different cultures and backgrounds there’s always going to be highs and lows. “It is not really focussed on religion, more on cultures, upbringings and backgrounds of different people. “It’s like a Big Brother and Wife Swap put into one.” As with Make Bradford British, in the first programme everyone will live together in one house, eating together, managing a budget and going on trips together to explore their different senses of what it means to be British. In the second programme they will be paired up and spend a number of days and nights together - living in one another’s homes and meeting friends and family – to gain a real insight into each others’ lives. Following the success of Make Bradford British, which won a prestigious international Rose d’Or award, Rashid says he still stays in touch with some of the original stars and explained what he is doing now. “Since the first series, myself, Damon and Desmond have been going into schools and hosting workshops on diversity and social cohesion,” he said.
Did you know... The infamous screen villain Shakti Kapoor’s daughter Shraddha Kapoor may be a few films old, but looks like the newbie has managed to rub the paparazzi the wrong way. Recently when she was on the sets of a TV show to promote “Ek Villain”, she said she would pose for pictures after the shoot was over, but when she came out, some two hours later, she walked with her head bowed down making it impossible for a good shot. Often Shraddha either turns her face away from photographers or keeps her head bowed to avoid getting clicked. This has angered the photographers so much that they have called upon a media ban on her. Shakti Kapoor has said: "There must be a misunderstanding. My
daughter is a sweet girl who never intentionally offends anybody. But yes, actors need to cooperate with the media." Back in the '70s Amitabh Bachchan, then at the peak of his career had faced similar ban from the entire press. Says a lensman about Shraddha: " When some of Bollywood's biggest stars including the Bachchan, the Khans, and the Kapoors don't have an issue with posing for the media, it's rather risky for a newcomer to throw to take panga with the paps, no?”
“Because we have experienced different cultures from the first series, and by living in Bradford, any misconceptions we had about each others’ lifestyles have been removed. “By making these links with children and teaching them about the importance of diversity I like to think we are kind of acting like role models for the kids. “It is really enjoyable and we are always learning as well.” If you would like the Make Bradford British team to visit your school, youth centre or organisation, you can contact Rashid at rashidkhan13@ hotmail.co.uk

Naughty Boy: “I said ‘NO’ to One Direction before” The ‘La La La’ hitmaker, who has written a few songs for One Direction’s new album, admitted he previously said ‘no’ to collaborating with the X Factor boyband because he felt he couldn’t make a contribution to their pop sound. “I felt like I wouldn’t have added anything to that sound. With this song, it was made for them,” he said. “I’ve written a song for them with Emeli Sande and Zayn, and they are going to record that. I think it’s Simon’s favourite song as well, so I’ve been told.” The 29-year-old producer added: “I think with this album, they can afford to be a bit more grown-up and more mature. They're boys turning into men so it's a good time for Naughty Boy to put a stamp on their sound. It's not a crazy step away from what you'd expect from One Direction but it's subtle enough.” Naughty Boy, whose real name is Shahid Khan, has been in the
studio with 1D's Zayn Malik. “I met him at the Brits and we both have similar backgrounds. We’re both Pakistani, grew up in similar surroundings and culture, and it's good to meet someone you're on a level with,” he said. “I’d previously turned down working with One Direction but knowing Zayn and hearing him sing he's also doing some writing - I thought, 'This guy's actually really talented'.” Naughty Boy - who is producing a track for Lynx's Make Beats Not War campaign, featuring Professor Green, Laura Mvula and Wilkinson - admitted he's been taken aback by the group's fans, known as One Directioners. “It's just crazy. Whenever I work with him, there are people who camp outside the studio. They can find out his location. It's really intense stuff,” he said.

Katrina’s comm e n t s to Hrithik about her boyfriend’s work lands her in hot water! It seems that ‘lovebirds’ Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor have had a major squabble. Reportedly, the duo had a major fallout on the set of Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’. It all happened when Ranbir was shooting an action scene for the film and Kat was also shooting on location for ‘Bang Bang’ with Hrithik Roshan. She had drawn a comparison that her boyfriend was copying Hrithik’s stunt for movie ‘Bang Bang’. Ranbir was outraged that she had compared him with Hrithik and ended up having a very public and heated argument with Katrina whilst on the set of ‘Jagga Jasoos’. Following the tiff, Ranbir refused to resume shooting until, and unless, she apologised to him. Sources tell that he also wanted her to promise never to compare him to anyone else nor make such comments about his work again. It’s widely known that Ranbir had previously demanded Katrina to stay away from Hrithik and apparently she has obliged. After shoots, Kat has been retiring to her vanity van rather than spending time with the cast of ‘Bang Bang’. During the shooting of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, rumor sparked that Katrina and Hrithik were in a secret relationship. It was also rumoured that Kat is the

reason behind Hrithik and Suzanne’s separation. Hrithik Roshan had a lip-locking scene with Katrina Kaif in ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ which irked Suzanne Khan. Katrina and Hrithik also shot a few intimate scenes in the first schedule of ‘Bang Bang’ which again disturbed Suzanne Roshan and she had a fall out with the actorhusband. A source commented that not many know that Katrina and Hrithik’s fling on the sets of ‘Bang Bang’ has much to do with Hrithik and Suzanne's separation. Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif have shared a love-hate relationship ever since they shot for ‘Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara’. In fact, a photo-shoot for a fashion magazine in 2011, right before the film’s release, holds ample evidence for this – the pair had had a lover's tiff and their more-than-friendship status became more than just an open secret amongst industry insiders. Suzanne also doubted Hrithik having an affair with Marbara Mori when both worked together in ‘Kites’. The duo had a big showdown after the film and Suzanne then almost called their relationship a quit.
Imran Khan's bundle of joy is just a few days old and the actor's already obsessing about his little girl. His wife Avantika and himself have named the child Imara Malik Khan. "It is Swahili and it means strong and resolute," explains the light-eyed actor. Recalling the moment he first set eyes on his baby, he says: "Friends and family tell you that when you become a parent your world changes. “It is one of those things that people keep telling you about, but until you hold the baby in your arms, you are never really prepared for it." With petite Avantika's pregnancy difficult at the last stages, Imran was lovingly and amirably sympathetic to her condition. He adds: “Our world changed on June 9th - the baby was born at 9.14 am on a Monday morning and when they handed her over to me at 9.15, a switch went off in my head, it’s such a cliché but honestly, my world has changed." Imran also indulged how his family made the hospital a “Mad Hatter's” zone on that day. Imran says, "Mansoor mamu is not here, but Aamir mamu and Kiran came to the hospital. My family is nuts. We had booked an extra room for the family, right next to Avantika and the baby, but we fell short of space because ten members arrived together. “Before long we had to request the hospital for one more room to accommodate our relatives. “And there was a nice family outing happening with everyone ordering French fries, cheese toast and nimbu-
paani. “Hospital rules allow only two persons to visit the patient at a time. So people took turns to see the baby and meet my wife. “They would then go back to the next room and stay put. It was comical." The actor is also an expert at changing nappies - no, he hadn't enrolled in any classes, but he has hands-on experience of changing nappies and bottle-feeding Mansoor and Aamir's kids while he was growing up. "All of that is coming in handy," he laughs. Of course, in the case of Imara, everything he does is magnified because he is obsessed with his newborn. The baby room is manned by a camera, which is accessible from anywhere in the world. "Wherever I am, whatever I am doing, I can access her room on my phone''. He even points out a slight resemblance that she bears to Aamir's son Azad and to himself. "If I had had a boy I would have some semblance of dignity. But since it's a girl, I will be on my knees for the rest of my life. My daughter can twist me around her little finger," he adds. Imran’s hands are noticeably chaffed. He explains: "I have bought a 24pack of hand sanitisers. I have sanitised my hands 30 times in a record of 24 hours. Each time I go up to my baby, I want to ensure my hands are clean. That's how my skin has started to peel. My mother has now warned me to go easy on that stuff.”

Bollywood actress files molestation complaint
One of India's admired Bollywood actresses - Preity Zinta has filed a police complaint alleging that she was molested, abused and threatened by a former boyfriend at an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match, officials said Saturday. Zinta accused businessman Ness Wadia, who co-owns the Kings XI Punjab IPL team with the actress, of abusing her after the pair got into an argument while watching their team play the Chennai Super Kings on May 30.
"We received Zinta's complaint on Friday June 13th," Mumbai police officer Vijay Mane told reporters. "She wrote that both of them were sitting together at the Mumbai Wankhede stadium on May 30 when they had an argument over something following which he threatened her, pushed her and used bad language against her," Mane said. Zinta issued a statement on Saturday describing it as a "difficult time". "My intention is not to harm anyone, but only to protect myself," the statement said. Wadia also issued a media statement expressing "shock" over the complaint against him and said the "allegations against me
are totally false and baseless". Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said an investigation was underway. "We will be recording the statements of the witnesses," Maria told media sources. Police have lodged an initial case of "outraging the modesty of a woman", intimidation and intentional insult, local media reported. Zinta and Wadia, scion of the Wadia group, an Indian conglomerate with interests including in real estate, textiles and a low-budget airline, called off their five-year relationship in 2009, although they continue to be business partners, according to local media.

Business news emand for gold jewellery and bars in top consumer Asia continued to be lack lustre as metal prices still continue to gain. Bullion dealers said buying will remain sluggish over the course of the summer. Prices in China, the number one consumer of gold jewellery, bars and coins, slipped to a discount this week versus the global benchmark that hit a three-month high. Demand in the second biggest buyer India was also muted, with
D
many waiting for import rules to be eased before making any big purchases. "There is little appetite to buy when prices are seeing an upward momentum," said Peter Fung, head of dealing at Wing Fung Precious Metals in Hong Kong. "We can expect some pick up in physical demand only after the summer, maybe from September or October," he said. Premiums in Hong Kong, a main trade route into China, were about 50 cents to $1.20 an ounce
to global prices, dealers said. A very few were even selling at a small discount or on par to global prices. In China, local prices were at a discount of about $1 an ounce. Last week, prices were on par with London prices. Thailand prices were also at a discount, while Singapore premiums continued to range between 80 cents and $1.20. "Even with a price drop, I doubt demand is going to increase much," said a dealer in
Singapore. Asia bought a record amount of gold last year as prices fell 28 percent after a 12-year bull run. Consumers brought forward their purchases when prices were lower, eating away some of this year's demand. In India, consumers were waiting for the government to present its budget next week, with many in the market expecting a cut in the record high import duty of 10 percent on gold.
Gold buying in Asia subdued
Struggling with a ballooning trade deficit, India last year hiked its import duty on gold and made it necessary for a fifth of all imports to be exported. The moves resulted in lower imports, scarcity of the metal and higher domestic prices. An easing of import rules would further push down domestic prices that are currently $25-$30 per ounce above London prices the weakest since February, dealers said. Premiums had climbed to over $100 last year.

Ramadan
is upon us “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) selfrestraint,-” The Holy Quran, Surah Al Baqarah 2:183 Ramadan will be upon us for the next several weeks – a glorious month characterised by sacrifice, self-control, will power and getting closer to our creator – Allah. Whilst in the UK the daily fast will last between 19-20 hours every day, let us remember that when the sun sets we will be met with a food and drink – we will be nourished. According to the World Food Programme the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide - 842 MILLION people in the world do not have enough to eat. They also offer the following alarming facts: • The vast majority of hungry people (842 million) live in developing countries, where 14.3 percent of the population is undernourished. • Asia has the largest number of hungry people (over 500 million) but Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence (24.8 percent of population). • If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.
• Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five - 3.1 million children each year. • One out of six children roughly 100 million - in developing countries is underweight. • 66 million primary schoolage children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. Ironically, the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone; universal agriculture produces enough consumable sustenance to provide everyone
with 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per day (recommended daily intake is 2,000kcal for women and 2,500kcal for men). This therefore means that there is enough food on this earth for every single individual to have a more than sufficient diet yet due to numerous factors, some of which being insufficient land to grow crops and / or a lack of income to purchase food – the undernourished have grown to such an astronomical amount. As Ramadan begins and we go through the daylight hours without a morsel of food or a
drop of water passing our lips, seek solace in the fact that you know when your next meal will be. Be thankful to Allah that you are clothed, have a home and do not have to trudge miles and miles for a glass of water whilst the unforgiving sun beats down on your back, draining you of energy. Many of my non-Muslim friends, peers and acquaintances believe that what we do for one month every year is commendable – I feel it is necessary. When we are rid of gluttony and having whatever we desire at our fingertips we
have time to appreciate the ‘normal’ things in life that we take for granted. We cleanse our minds, bodies and souls and in doing so get closer to our maker – Ramadan is essentially as much of a spiritual rejuvenation as it is a physical test. This Ramadan, remember how much you have – remember how many people struggle every single day to acquire what we believe is a basic human right. Prepare. Rejoice. Self-assess. Repent. Change.

Pushing the boundaries he location of a boundary can be a contentious issue, with a disagreement over a few inches of land leading to the most bitter of disputes. Neighbour disputes are particularly challenging because of the proximity of the parties who continue to reside near to one another both during and after the dispute itself. This can have a profound impact on the relations between the parties and the enjoyment of their homes. Although the deeds to a property may provide confirmation of the location of a boundary line, this is not always conclusive. In practice it can often be difficult to determine precisely where a boundary lies. Whilst the plans in a conveyance can provide assistance in locating the boundary line, these cannot always be relied upon when determining the correct boundary. It may be that the plans are inaccurate or have been drawn in such a way that the thick lines are not to scale and may well represent an area of several feet on the ground. When determining a boundary
T
dispute, the Courts will be guided by the following relevant principles:• Plans show only general boundaries unless the property is said to be "more particularly described in the plan" • Ordnance Survey plans are no more than a general guide to a boundary feature • The starting point is the language of the conveyance and any plan • Extrinsic evidence such as topographical features on the land that existed when the land was divided may be relevant • Evidence of subsequent conduct may be of value in showing what the original parties intended • Evidence of later features may or may not be of relevance. • It is important to bring certainty to the determination by proclaiming the boundary • Evidence of adverse possession should be considered • Informal boundary agreements need not be in writing • A boundary agreement can be implied or inferred • The Court should also bear in
mind (1) what a reasonable layman would think he was buying; (2) every case turns on its own facts; and (3) the task of the court is to assess all available and admissible material in arriving at its answer, and then to achieve the correct answer. In the case of Acco Properties Limited -v- Mr and Mrs Severn, the High Court dealt with a boundary dispute concerning a British Virgin Islands company which had purchased a plot and driveway adjoining the Defendant’s family home. The Defendants erected a fence in order to prevent the encroachment of trees and undergrowth and a dispute arose regarding the location of the boundary line. The width of the boundary in issue was, at its widest point, 19 inches (49cm). Following an analysis of the relevant principles, the Court determined that the fence had been erected at least 4 inches over the Claimant’s land. The Court ordered that the fence should remain in situ and the Claimants should be awarded a modest financial sum (£1,000) to compensate them for the loss

well-established PVC window manufacturing business is up for purchase in Dewsbury. S&K Windows has been in operation for 12 years and has made a name for itself in the area, particularly amongst the Asian community. Unfortunately the owners of the company must cease trading due to illness. However, this means that there is a window of opportunity for a new owner to inherit S&K Windows’ reputation and success. Michael Oakes, current co-owner of S&K Windows, said: “This is a great opportunity to buy a very credible business. “The local community know us very well and we have an extremely loyal customer base. “There is work booked in for the next few
months, so the new owner will be able to hit the ground running. “Also, I am more than happy to stay on for a short while to train anyone who needs help and make sure they know the ropes.” The property is a freehold two story building, with attached workshop and storage building, constructed only three years ago. A new, fully-functioning, glass shop was also launched this year onsite where the company is able to produce its own glass for its own frames and sell directly to trade. There are three offices, a showroom, a kitchen and toilet facilities. With up to date machinery and well trained staff, this is a quality up and running business. The sale also includes stock. Serious offers only.

of what was a very narrow strip of land with no apparent commercial value. The Judge noted that the fence had been erected as a result of neglect on the part of successive owners of the Claimant’s land which had led to the hedgerow crossing over onto the Defendant’s land, which had caused some damage and was therefore a nuisance. The Judge made clear that he did not “accept that the days are gone when a party can litigate over a tiny strip of land, although I would certainly agree that it is usually economic madness so to do, but a person remains entitled in law to protect and preserve that which is his or hers”. Whilst the Courts will strive for a common sense approach, boundary disputes are often emotionally draining for those involved and can result in one of the parties eventually moving home as they find continuing to live in close proximity to their opponent untenable. Blacks Solicitors can assist in the sale and purchase of residential and commercial property and any disputes which may subsequently arise.

Insider Trading Trial The younger brother of a convicted hedge fund manager has begun his trial charged with insider trading. In 2011, former billionaire, Raj Rajaratnam, was handed an 11 year prison sentence for the same offence and now his sibling, Rengan, will be hoping for more luck when his trial concludes. In a New York City District Court, Rengan, a former portfolio manager at ‘Raj Rajaratnam’s Galleon Group’, is accused of engaging in an insider trading scheme with his brother involving technology companies: Clearwire Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Daniel Gitner, Rengan’s lawyer, initially declined to comment on the case which began on Tuesday, and has previously argued that prosecutors lacked evidence against his client. He claimed that the 43-yearold did not know any inside information was disclosed purely for personal benefit. If Mr Rajaratnam is found guilty, it would continue an unbroken insider trading trial winning streak for Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara's office, which has secured convictions of 81 people since October 2009. Jurors are expected to hear recordings of FBI wiretaps, which featured prominently in the trial of Raj Rajaratnam three years ago. According to the indictment, in March 2008, Rajiv Goel, a then-Intel Corp executive, learnt that the company was planning on investing $1billion in ‘Clearwire’. The accusation continues by saying Raj Rajaratnam passed on this information to his brother, Rengan, who later called him to complain when a news report of the deal surfaced – a call prosecutors will say proves insider trading was taking place. According to the indictment, a
transcript of the phone call includes Rengan saying to his brother, ‘So I don't know how much you got in today…but I think (Clearwire's share price) is gonna rip tomorrow’. The price climbed the next day, enabling Rengan Rajaratnam to earn $100,000 personally and Galleon to reap $700,000, prosecutors said. Five months later, in August, Raj Rajaratnam is accused of telling his brother of a ‘handshake’ deal between AMD and two Abu Dhabi-owned investment companies he learnt about from Anil Kumar, a McKinsey & Company partner. The same day, Rengan Rajaratnam told Raj that another McKinsey partner, David Palecek, had ‘spilled his beans’ about investments in AMD, prosecutors said. Despite trading on the tip, Galleon sold AMD for a loss due to overall market declines, prosecutors said. Kumar and Goel pleaded guilty, testified at Raj Rajaratnam's trial and were sentenced in 2012 to two years’ probation. Palecek died in 2010; his lawyer has said no proof exists he agreed to provide inside information. The younger Rajaratnam brother now faces three counts of conspiracy and securities fraud, after prosecutors dropped four other charges. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has also sued Rengan Rajaratnam, claiming he also traded on inside information about stocks including Polycom Inc and Hilton Hotels while at Sedna Capital Management, where he worked from 2004 to 2007. Before Sedna, he worked as an analyst at Steven A. Cohen's ‘SAC Capital Advisors’, which last year pleaded guilty to fraud charges and agreed to pay $1.8 billion in criminal and civil penalties. A federal judge in May barred prosecutors from mentioning Rengan Rajaratnam's employment at SAC during his trial.

ACCUSED: Raj Rajaratnam will stand trial at a US District Court on charges of insider trading after an indictment allegedly shows the businessman speaking with his already convicted brother about ‘large deals’

Performance, precision and agility M POWER: For the first time the Coupé and Saloon models receive individual model names
The launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé heralds the arrival of the fifth-generation of the iconic high-performance sports car from BMW M. Both dripping with tech, for the first time the Coupé and Saloon models receive individual model names. Another first is the adoption of a turbocharged engine for this BMW M model: the high-revving, 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology has been specifically developed for this purpose, and produces a maximum output of 431hp. Its peak torque of 550Nm is available across a very wide rev range starting at just 1,850rpm, and exceeds the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. In spite of this, the new engine also achieves a reduction in
fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent. With new engine seeing a slight power upgrade over the previous V8, the standard sprint from 062mph takes both cars just 4.3 seconds with manual transmission, or just 4.1 seconds with the optional M DCT, while the top speed is 155mph (electronically limited). The new powerplant also boasts excellent fuel economy: the combined consumption in the EU cycle is as high as 34mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 194g/km, an improvement of more than 25 per cent over the previous model’s figures. To maximise dynamic ability and ensure excellent efficiency, a weight loss of over 80kgs has been achieved - both models now feature a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof. BMW M engineers have paid
New BMW M3 and M4 designed to deliver high power, low weight and promises ultimate driving pleasure
particular attention to the car’s aerodynamic performance, and incorporated the latest Active M Differential amongst numerous other technical highlights. During the development process the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers, with extensive testing and set-up work carried out on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé are formed from a host of finely blended elements, all working in perfect harmony to deliver outstanding performance, precision and agility on road and track. With the new BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, the engineers sought to optimally channel the air
around the car in the quest for ultimate performance, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and brakes receive the requisite cooling. Even when operating under heavy loads on the racing circuit. The aggressively styled front apron, smooth under-body and the clearly defined lip spoiler at the rear of the M3 Saloon (or integrated bootlid spoiler at the rear of the BMW M4 Coupé) reduce lift by an equal amount at the front and rear axle, to the benefit of handling. The Aero Curtain and M side
gills, the latter with integrated Air Breathers minimise turbulence in the front wheel arches. These elements, together with the aerodynamically optimised side mirrors in familiar M twin-stalk style, are not only distinctive design features, they also help to reduce drag. The cars launched on June 21st and are priced at £56,175 OTR for the M3 Saloon and £56,635 OTR for the M4 Coupé. BMW UK expects to sell 1,000 BMW M4 Coupés and 180 M3 Saloons in their first full year of sales.

World’s fastest production electric car prepares for launch
Detroit Electric, the international electric vehicle manufacturer, is finalising dynamic testing of its SP:01 pure-electric sportscar at a facility in Europe ahead of its introduction in several world markets. The lightweight, two-seat, rear-wheeldrive,open-top sportscar promises to thrill the EV market with its blistering performance and exhilarating dynamics.
This latest version of the SP:01 has seen additional development work carried out by Detroit Electric’s engineers and designers since a pre-production version of the vehicle was revealed to the media at events in Detroit, USA, and Shanghai, China, last year. Further details of the car and Detroit Electric’s production and sales plans will be announced in the coming weeks.
Audi’s high performance compact gets a soft top
Rising temperatures call for a retractable roof, and for the first time in its three-generation history the high performance Audi S3 now has an answer to that call. The all-new 300PS S3 Cabriolet the first ever soft-top version of the acclaimed high performance compact - is available to order now priced from £38,910 OTR, and is set to arrive with UK customers from September. At the same time, the TDI arm of the open-air A3 range has also been bolstered by a muscular 184PS 2.0-litre TDI engine which is notable as the first in the history of the A3 Cabriolet ever to be offered with the option of quattro allwheel-drive. Providing a highly desirable combination of strong performance and 65mpg-plus economy potential, the A3
Cabriolet 2.0 TDI 184PS joins the range priced from £29,735 OTR, and takes to our roads from October. Beneath the bonnet of the trailblazing S3 is the acclaimed EU6-compliant 2.0 TFSI engine, linked exclusively here to six-speed S tronic transmission and apportioning its power four ways via the multi-plate clutch-based quattro all-wheel-drive system. Its substantial 300 PS power peak is available between 5,500 and 6,200rpm and peak torque of 380Nm is on tap from 1,8005,500rpm, so a 5.4-second 0-62mph sprint and a governed 155mph top speed are well within its grasp. Combined fuel consumption stands at an impressive 39.8mpg, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 165g/km.
Intern’s Qoros 9 Sedan Concept makes UK debut After an internship during which he worked amongst some of the most talented automobile designers in the industry, a design student’s vision of a Qoros for the year 2020 was showcased at the Coventry University Degree Show in the UK. Jihoon Seo – a 29-year-old Korean – undertook a five-month spell with the brand’s designers in Shanghai as part of the Qoros Design Team’s internship programme. Qoros then sponsored Seo through his finalyear project that represented the culmination of his studies at Coventry University’s School of Art and Design. During his internship, Seo was mentored by Tim Pilsbury (British), Senior Manager of the Qoros design studio in Shanghai. For his final year project, Qoros briefed Seo to create a flagship concept saloon for the new China-based international brand to launch in the year 2020, specifically aimed at 40-50 year-old professionals living in a modern metropolitan city. Unveiled at the Coventry University Degree Show as a 1:4.5 scale clay
model, the Qoros 9 Sedan Concept displays a next-generation interpretation of Qoros’ pioneering New Premium philosophy. It exhibits several design cues evident in the brand’s Qoros 3 Sedan – on sale in China and Slovakia since
late 2013 – and Qoros 3 Hatch, which will join the Sedan in showrooms in China in the middle of 2014. It also
introduces some new concept design themes for the future. Clean horizontal lines and generous proportions give the Qoros 9 Sedan Concept a simple,
modern and distinctive look and the present-day Qoros signature hockeystick design theme is featured in several individual styling elements around the car. The side profile is elegant and powerful, with a bluff leading edge and coupé-like rear, where the Cpillar extends almost all the way to the boot-lid spoiler. At the front a trapezoidal grille with a chrome surround, flanked by powerful LED Xenon headlamps and fog lamps, creates a strong, impactful face. Compact rear combination lights feature three horizontal LED bars to accentuate the car’s width and imposing stature. The Qoros 9 Sedan Concept has no traditional door mirrors; instead, a high-definition rear-view camera is discreetly integrated into the LED side indicator repeater module just below the base of each A-pillar. Perforated and diamond-cut eight-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels exude dynamism and a premium feel. During the Degree Show, Seo was bestowed with an award for “Best Flat Work” for his sketches and renderings of the Qoros 9 Sedan Concept.

CLASSICS: Dr Prakash has 225 cars, 60 motorcycles, horse carriages and cycles all housed at his farm outside Bangalore
Surgeon-turned businessman to showcase two of his prized possessions at the Salon Privé An Indian surgeon’s collection of classic cars spanning several eras, is to be showcased right here in England, and boy… if these cars could speak they’d have one hell of a story to tell! As one of the world’s most prolific classic car owners Dr Ravi Prakash has a stunning collection of much-loved classics including Mercedes, Rolls-Royces, Jaguars, Mustangs, Corvettes, Sunbeams, Cadillac’s, Packard’s, Lanchesters, Daimlers and Delages. The Prakash’s are the first family in India who are huge enthusiasts of the vintage and classic car movement and it was only natural that Dr Prakash would be invited to display two cars from his prized collection at this year’s Salon Privé in West London. Dr Prakash, affectionately called “Doc” by the vintage car-world, acquired his first ‘classic’ in 1979 - a Sunbeam-Talbot 1937, 2 litre sports tourer, willed to him by Retd. General Mahadevan, Commander of the Indian Army who lived in Madras. This fuelled his passion and since then, Prakash has amassed over 225 cars, 60 motorcycles, horse carriages, cycles all housed in ‘Kala Farm’, on the outskirts of Bangalore, Southern India. A cardiothoracic surgeon by profession turned into businessman, Dr Prakash and his family, simply can’t wait for the weekends so that they can take these vintage cars out for drives along country roads and amidst the crazy Indian traffic! Fifteen employees are dedicated to working full-time on these cars in an inhouse workshop, tinkering, painting, repairing and sourcing parts from all over the world. Commenting, Dr Prakash said: “Ever
ENTHUSIASTS: Dr Ravi Prakash along with his wife and two daughters are immersed in their passion for vintage cars
since I acquired my first classic car over three decades ago - 1937 Sunbeam Talbot 2 litre, I’ve not looked back. “My love of classic cars borders on ‘‘obsession’ at times. “The acquired passion and the encouragement from my wife Sabena, our daughters Rupali and Shefali are carrying on my legacy and making my dreams come true. “I want the younger generation to explore the wonder and magic of classic cars.” Dr Prakash - the secretary of one of the oldest classic car clubs in India, “Karnataka Vintage and Classic Car Club” (KVCCC) in Bangalore has been instrumental in organising number of events for the social cause for over a decade. He is planning to build the largest classical car museum in India to house the collection which is expected to be finished in late 2016. His collection has been dedicated to a charitable trust and the monies earned
by the museum will be used for treatment of road traffic accident victims. More recently, the Prakash family featured in the inaugural ceremony of India’s first GP circuit in Delhi, where more of Dr Prakash’s cars from his 200piece collection drove the F1 drivers around the circuit for the opening ceremony parade. Daughter, Shefali drove Jaime Alguersuari, Rupali drove Sergio Perez, Sabena drove Sebastien Buemi and “Doc” drove Lewis Hamilton. Salon Privé is a boutique event which opens on Wednesday 3rd September with the crème de la crème of classic cars from around the world competing in the internationally-renowned Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance. “Docs” 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I and 1930 Delage D8 S are both entered in the ‘Fit for a King’ class which showcases cars from around the world with Head of State or Royal provenance.

Ride4Peace
TEAM: Cyclists took to the road earlier this month as they aimed to raise £100,000 for British-based charities by cycling from the top to the bottom of the United Kingdom
Muslims travel length of country in fundraising mission By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As Tour de France fever takes over the UK, 25 cyclists from across the country have completed a gruelling ride from Glasgow to London in a 600-mile trip to raise money for charity and promote peace. The event, which started earlier this month, had been named ‘Ride4Peace’ by its organisers – the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC). Cyclists took on the challenge with the ambition of raising £100,000 for British-based charities, the British Heart Foundation and Humanity First. Tackling the winding Ride4Peace route participants got to tour the British countryside, stopping at 13 Mosques in Glasgow, Newcastle, Hartlepool, Bradford, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford, Feltham, and finally London. Faith and civic leaders, sports enthusiasts and members of the public were all on hand to greet and motivate the team at each checkpoint and cheer the cyclists along. The Ride4Peace is just one of several events which the AMC has organised over the past month to commemorate 100 years since its establishment in the UK. The £100,000 being collected will take the total amount raised to close to half a million pounds over May. In addition to stopping at 13 Mosques and a number of BHF shops, the Ride4Peace cyclists stopped to pay their respect at Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park, a First World War memorial originally built in 1921 and recently restored in 2007, and also at the Commonwealth War Graveyard in Ripon. Explaining why the cyclists chose

to stop at the memorial sites, Ali Khan, a member of Team Ride4Peace said: “Like myself, many of the cyclists are of South Asian descent and our grandparents and great grandparents played a big role during both world wars. “About 74,000 members of the Indian army offered the ultimate sacrifice fighting for the British Empire in the First World War and more than 1.5million people from across the Commonwealth forces in both World Wars. “It was the collective sacrifice of all those who served that helped to provide us with many of the opportunities and freedoms we enjoy today. Their memory is something to be cherished and celebrated.” Adding why it was so important to welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds to the mosques during the cycle, Ali added: “We hope that opening up our Mosques across the country to anyone and everyone will demonstrate that they are beacons of peace within local communities and not places to be suspicious of.” More information about the Ride4Peace can be found at: www.ride4peace.org.
So, what went wrong?
Well, that’s that then. England are out and another major tournament passes by with disappointment once again the number one feeling which the nation’s fans are forced to endure. An opening day defeat to Italy was the highlight of the tournament (which speaks for itself), with so many ‘if moments’ in Manaus. If only Sterling’s strike had of gone the other side of the post, if only Glen Johnson knew how to track his man, if only Balotelli didn’t love to ruin the party...if only. Onto game two and the man with the thirst for more than goals single-handedly picked the Three Lions apart as Luis Suarez’s brace all but condemned Hodgson’s men to elimination. Perhaps if the Liverpool forward had of been fit for the opening clash with Costa Rica, and decided to sink his teeth into one of their players instead, the story could have been so different. It was then up to the ‘kids’ in game three to have a go on the international stage and despite a number of decent chances falling to Daniel Sturridge, England bowed out with a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica. Hodgson will have learnt a lot about his players, who were never realistically expected to win the cup, and will now have his eyes set on qualifying for the Euro 2016 in France. One thing is for sure, if they play like they did in Brazil, the players, staff and fans will be saying ‘au revoir’ before they know it.
APOLOGISE: Roy Hodgson said he was sorry after seeing England knocked out at the group stages, yet insisted he would not resign

Moin Drivers head south in fundraising mission
DRIVER: Moin Valli took part in the Forget Me Not 500 earlier this month and helped raise £5,000 for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A pair of fundraising petrol heads from Huddersfield hit the road earlier this month as they raised thousands of pounds for a local children’s hospice. Moin Valli and teammate, Andrew McGee, headed south to France for an experience like no other as they partook in the Forget Me Not 500, raising money for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. The team were given just £500 towards expenses for their four-day trip, and were targeted with raising sponsorship of £3,000. In their classic MGB GT sports-car, the pair set off on their journey on Thursday 12th June heading for the Channel Tunnel. Crossing from Kent to France they even managed to squeeze in a stop at Brands Hatch (race track)
on the way, in build up to the Le Mans circuit. A steady drive through France saw them arrive at the world-renowned Le Mans 24 hour track on Saturday where they were able to soak in the atmosphere of the historic venue. With enough time left over to still pay a visit to Normandy, to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers from the D-Day landings, they then headed back up North to catch an overnight ferry from Caen to Portsmouth. It was then a direct route up the motorway for the men as they made it back to Huddersfield, via Silverstone of course, in time for tea on Father’s Day. Moin, an optician by trade, said he had an amazing time on the trip and explained how important it was for people to help with fundraising initiatives. He said: “We had a fantastic time which was made very special by the

knowledge that we have raised about £5,000 for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. “The hospice has to raise over £2.8million pounds each year to provide their vital services with less than five per cent coming from government funding so initiatives such as this really do make a difference.” Kate Goldring, Corporate Partnership Manager at the charity added: “The Forget Me Not 500 offers an exciting and unique way for supporters to get involved with our charity and we have been thrilled with the great efforts that both Valli Opticians and Deco-Pak have put in to the rally. “Their cars looked absolutely fantastic and we couldn’t wait to hear how they got on when they got back. Their support has been incredible and we would like to say a huge thank you to them both.”

SPORT Eight-year ban
GOT A SPORTS STORY PROFESSIONAL OR AMATEUR? contact our sports newsdesk:sport@asianexpress.co.uk SUSPENDED: Mohammad Ashraful will not be able to play in any format of cricket after admitting to charges of match fixing in Twenty20 competition last year
Former Bangladeshi captain handed lengthy suspension With corruption threatening to tarnish the reputation of the supposed ‘gentleman sport’ across Asia, the news of a former international cricket captain being suspended for match fixing is certainly not what lovers of the sport want to hear. Mohammad Ashraful, who has played 61 tests and 177 one-day international matches for Bangladesh since debuting in 2001, is the latest guilty party tied up in the corruption charges. On Wednesday last week, he was handed an eight-year ban from the game after being found guilty of involvement in match-fixing in Twenty20 competition last year. The right-handed batsman, who confessed to the crime after being quizzed by ICC anti-corruption officials in June 2013, will not be able to play in any formats of the sport. A tribunal also found two other cricketers guilty for similar charges and handed out suspensions accordingly. New Zealand batsman, Lou Vincent, and Sri Lanka’s Kaushal Lokuarachchi, will not be able to play competitive cricket in any format for three years and 18
Murray’s out Andy Murray’s hopes of becoming the first Brit to retain the Wimbledon title since the late Fred Perry were left in tatters earlier this week as he was confidently beaten by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Just one day after Rafael Nadal had been eliminated by wild card entry, 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios, the Scot was forced to accept defeat after being outclassed by his youthful opponent. Succumbing to a 6-1 7-6(4) 6-2 final score, Murray’s 17-game unbeaten streak at SW19 was humbled in the most dominant of ways. Dimitrov showed his power and accuracy in the first set, silencing the expectant crowd with an inspirational display, dropping only one game to the reigning Wimbledon champ. The British number one showed none of the form which crowned him winner last year hitting 37 unforced errors throughout the contest. His second serve also proved to be extremely vulnerable, allowing the 23-year-old heavy hitter to take full advantage during Murray’s service games. Murray had looked like rediscovering some of his form in the second set yet even a tie break situation fell in the favour of the pre-match underdog, picking up a 7-4 win. With everything still to play for in the final set, the All England club rallied behind their undisputed favourite, yet not even a one-sided audience could distract Dimitrov from completing the job. 6-2 was the final score in the last set which saw the end of Murray’s Wimbledon adventure for another year. “Everyone's starting to get better,” a downbeat Murray said after the match. “The younger guys are now obviously becoming more mature and improving all the time. “It's not the toughest loss of my career; that was losing in the final here in 2012 (against Roger Federer). “I've had a good run here at Wimbledon over the past few years. Obviously it's disappointing for it to end like that.” It had taken 77 years for a Brit to win the Wimbledon title after Fred Perry’s victory in 1936.
months respectively. The pair had failed to inform authorities that they had been approached to fix matches whilst playing in the Bangladesh Premier League. Vincent is also at the centre of a matchfixing investigation in England which, last week, resulted in former Sussex player Naveed Arif being banned from cricket for life by the England and Wales Cricket Board. The managing director of BPL champions Dhaka Gladiators, Shihab Jishan Chowdury, has also been banned for 10 years for his part in the match-fixing scandal. Shakil Kasem, one of the three-member tribunal which handed down the sentences, confirmed that the ban would be effective worldwide. “The charges against the four were brought in accordance with the International Cricket Council's anticorruption code,” he said. “As a result, during the ban period, they'll be barred from playing and all sorts of cricketing activities anywhere in the world.”
Come play for us! SUSPENDED: Luis Suarez cannot play football in any country where their football federation is officially recognised by FIFA
A bizarre transfer offer has been made for one of the world’s top footballers which could see Luis Suarez end up playing his football in The Republic of Abkhazia. Abkhazian club, Nart FC, are ready to offer the controversial Uruguayan the chance to continue playing football during his four-month ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup. The 27-year-old was also expelled from the World Cup and handed a nine-match competitive international ban for the incident in a Group D match. The Republic of Abkhazia is located within Georgia, but claimed independence following
Georgia's brief war with Russia in August 2008. The territory has not been widely recognised by the international community while its local football federation is not part of FIFA. Gennady Tsvinariya, the president of the club, said Suarez will be able to take part in the Abkhazian national championship. “Of course we cannot offer the Uruguayan footballer a financial package that he is used to, but the Abkhazian championship is at its peak,” Tsvinariya told the ITAR-TASS news agency. “We will be able to offer Suarez the chance to maintain his match fitness.”
