dren at risk Mayor of “Chil of radicalisation should be in care” London: HAVE YOUR SAY!
EMAIL YOUR THOUGHTS & OPINIONS TO: comments@asianexpress.co.uk
Muslim children who risk radicalisation by their parents should be taken into care, Boris Johnson has said. Writing in his weekly Daily Telegraph column, the London mayor said such children were victims of child abuse. Mr Johnson said they should be removed from their families to stop them being turned into "potential killers or suicide bombers". The Muslim Council of Britain warned Mr Johnson's remarks risked inflaming anti-Muslim feeling. In his article, he warned that some young people were being "taught crazy stuff" similar to the views expressed by the two men who killed Fusilier Lee Rigby on a south-east London street. Mr Johnson wrote: "At present, there is a reluctance by the social services to intervene, even when they and the police have clear evidence of what is going on, because it is not clear that the 'safeguarding law' would support such action. "A child may be taken into care if he or she is being exposed to pornography, or is being abused but not if the child is being habituated to this utterly bleak and nihilistic view of the world that could lead them to become murderers." He added: "I have been told of at least one case where the younger siblings of a convicted terrorist are well on the road to radicalisation - and it is simply not clear that the law would support intervention. "This is absurd. The law should obviously treat radicalisation as a form of child abuse. "It is the strong view of many of those involved in counter-
terrorism that there should be a clearer legal position, so that those children who are being turned into potential killers or suicide bombers can be removed into care - for their own safety and for the safety of the public." Speaking on his monthly phonein on LBC Radio, he said he had thought long and hard before making the case for intervention in what he suspected might be "no more than a few hundred" cases. "It is particularly apposite in view of the sentencing of the killers of Drummer Lee Rigby," he said. "The question is, how do we stop this happening again? How do we make sure the kids in London are not growing up with these kind of nightmarish ideas in their heads? "You can tackle the extremist preachers, you can do all sorts of things in the mosques... but one thing that has been brought to my attention is this particular anomaly that you can have in some cases, some kids who are being put at risk by the desire of their parents or their step-parents, their immediate family, to radicalise them." Asked whether the children of BNP activists could also be taken into care, Mr Johnson said this might be justified in "extreme" cases, such as if they were being taught that race-based assaults were acceptable. "It all depends on the interests of the child," he added. "It depends what is happening. If that child is being taught to want to commit crime, or be full of hate, then I imagine you might contemplate such a thing." However, the Muslim Council of Britain called on politicians to stop seeking "easy headlines" and
warned Mr Johnson's remarks could provoke anti-Muslim hatred. "After the terrible murder of Lee Rigby - condemned by Muslims throughout the country there was a huge spike in Islamophobic attacks", a spokesman said. "The people responsible for the murder of Lee Rigby were not sons of radical extremists, nor were those who committed previous atrocities. To tackle their extremism we need to look beyond the need to generate easy headlines." The spokesman said young people of all faiths "do not need politicians threatening the prospects of living in a Big Brother Society". A spokesman for the antiextremist think-tank, the Quilliam Foundation, agreed with Mr Johnson's points about a "fatal squeamishness" about intervening in the behaviour of a "protected group". He said the law must be "fairly and equally applied to all members of society, both in terms of protection and in terms of prosecution". But the Foundation said changing the law to enable intervention when children are merely at risk of radicalisation was "dangerous territory", adding that there was little academic evidence to suggest parents played a key role in radicalisation. "Non-violent extremism must be challenged, but not through illiberal legislation that is likely to do more harm than good. It is better to challenge the ideology and the narrative, rather than to alienate and malign individuals", the spokesman said.

Little Zayna and her family were receiving help and care from the hospice at the time, with the youngster waiting for a kidney transplant following renal failure. Thankfully, after waiting six months on the transplant list, a match was found and Zayna received her new kidney at Leeds General Infirmary from a recently deceased organ donor. Yet now, with Zayna recovering so well at home that she is beginning school this week, her mother, Najmah, explained how she was brought to tears once more, after the generosity of a ‘total stranger’. “Recently we got a phone call from Martin House and a gentleman, who read the article in the Asian Express, about Zayna’s pre-transplant situation, had been so touched by it that he had actually offered Zayna one of his kidneys,” Najmah APPEAL: Najmah said she was ‘overwhelmed’ after Zayna received her kidney transplant and was ‘touched’ to hear another potential donor had come forward after reading about her family in the newspaper
said. “I was completely shocked, I didn’t think anybody could be that compassionate or kind and I just started crying. “Of course he mustn’t have seen the latest article, saying Zayna’s had her transplant, but for someone who doesn’t even know Zayna to have such a big heart to pick up the phone and make that call, it really is touching.” Najmah and her family have now written a thank you card to the anonymous donor and attached a picture of Zayna as she continues to recover on a daily basis. What’s the worst that could happen?” Not only has Zayna now begun growing again, but she has also got her energy levels back, which Najmah says have kept her up until the early hours of the morning. ‘HS2 is the way forward’
Cancelling HS2 will leave the North without transport alternatives, says a new report welcomed by Leeds’ transport chief. The chair of Metro, Cllr James Lewis has welcomed a report by the High Speed Rail Industry Leaders Group, published yesterday, which argues that cancelling HS2 would see the North miss out on huge numbers of jobs and significant economic development. The report claims that cancelling HS2 would not, as critics claim, leave the Department for Transport with a huge fund to plough into alternative transport investment, but would instead see the majority of projected funding going to pay off national debt. The remaining funds would be insufficient to address the needs of the North’s cities for increased capacity and connectivity. The report puts paid to claims that the £42bn allocated to fund the major project, which will see a north-south high speed train line, would be better spent on regional transport projects. It highlights the need for a line to ease pressure on the aging West Coast and East Coast mainlines.

A new book that will reveal which pieces from collections to grace the city over the years have been chosen by John Roles, head of Leeds Museums and Galleries as his own personal favourites, is to be published this month. With over 30 years of experience in museums, John, who has been Head of Leeds Museums and Galleries since 2004, will reveal his own selection of appealing and interesting pieces from the council’s collections, and provide a personal insight and commentary into the reasons why he chose them, as part of a new ‘Director’s Choice’ series by publishers Scala. With an estimated 1.3million objects in its rich and diverse collections which have a reputation for their quality, depth and unique nature, John was faced with a number of difficult decisions when making his choices, as he considered displays which have graced sites across the city over the years.
Lord Mayor’s Tree
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun Joanne Dodds will take part in a tree planting ceremony in Heaton Woods, to celebrate the year in office of the current Lord Mayor Coun Khadim Hussain. An English Oak tree will be planted at the ceremony, on Saturday 8th March, which also marks annual aboricultural day for the Heaton Woods Trust. All Lord Mayors in Bradford are patron of the Heaton Woods Trust during their year in office. The tradition of planting the Lord Mayor’s Tree in Heaton Woods started in the mid-1980s and has continued ever since. The only Lord Mayor not to have a tree planted in his year in office was the late Stanley King, who was a founder member of the Heaton Woods Trust this was due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in 2000.
A place to call home
Everyone should have a place to call home, according to a new strategy that will tackle homelessness and housing in the Bradford district over the next five years. The 'A place to call home' is the new Housing and Homelessness Strategy for Bradford District 2014 2019. Building on the success of the existing strategy, it sets out the vision, priorities and approach for meeting the housing needs of the residents of the district and for tackling and preventing homelessness. The Council has worked with a range of partners to develop the plans which will go before Bradford Council's Executive for its approval next week on the 11th March. Four priority objectives have been identified in the strategy which are: more homes, safe and healthy homes, affordable homes, and support independence and prevent homelessness.
LAUNCH: HRH The Duke of York attended the launch event of the apprenticeship campaign at the Royal Armouries where he spoke passionately about the need to encourage businesses to take on apprentices
HRH The Duke of York Launches Leeds City Region Apprenticeship Campaign
National Apprenticeship Week gets Royal backing By Ashley Grint

VISIT: Prince Andrew visited Leeds College of Building’s Stourton site where he unveiled a commemorative plaque after speaking with the educational institutions representatives
Leeds was paid a royal visit earlier this week, as His Royal Highness The Duke of York arrived in the city to promote National Apprenticeship Week. Small and medium sized businesses across Leeds City Region have been urged to take on an apprentice as part of a new campaign which was officially launched at the Royal Armouries on the 4th March. The Duke unveiled the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Apprenticeship Challenge during his speech to 200 SMEs and old his audience that they have the power to inspire young people by giving them a chance to develop and take pride in a skill. He said that young people cannot gain experience and work skills if businesses are not prepared to offer that opportunity in the first place, and challenged employers to take on an apprentice, and remove the specification on job advertisements for previous experience as a necessity. His Royal Highness acknowledged there are risks for businesses but said that the support being offered across Leeds
City Region is helping to mitigate those. The Duke said: “An apprenticeship is the start of the beginning of a career. I hope that the Leeds City Region Challenge can be fulfilled and that the momentum that has already started will continue.” Employers were urged to sign pledge cards showing their commitment to find out more about the campaign which aims to secure at least 1,000 SMEs offering apprenticeships from April 2014 to March 2015.
Guests found out about the free and independent advice available from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership Apprenticeship Hubs which are based across ten local authority areas to make it easier for SMEs to recruit apprentices. Roger Marsh, Chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, said: “We are delighted the Duke of York acknowledged the hard work of all our partners in providing the opportunities our young people need to build a career for the
future. “The LEP is committed to maintaining this momentum. We will work with businesses to step up to the Apprenticeship Challenge and offer our young people the opportunities they need to develop their skills and gain vital work experience.” Meanwhile, His Royal Highness also visited the Leeds College of Building’s Stourton site, where he met apprentices, students and local dignitaries, toured the main construction workshop and unveiled a commemorative plaque. Ian Billyard, Principal of Leeds College of Building, said: “We are delighted that His Royal Highness could join us. The Duke has a passion for apprenticeships and the construction and engineering sector, and that clearly showed when he was speaking with our apprentices, students and staff.” Following that engagement, The Duke moved on to officially open Leeds City College's new £26 million Printworks campus, on Hunslet Road, completed in September 2013. His Royal Highness spoke with hospitality, catering, bakery and butchery apprentices and students, and led a business lunch and debate with the LEP Board at the college's Food Academy restaurant, to discuss LEP priorities for the region. The Duke’s official visit of Leeds concluded at Leeds Civic Hall where a Leeds Apprenticeship Awards ceremony was held. The awards recognise the outstanding contribution apprentices make to the city, and the employers who train them. The panel of judges included representatives from Leeds City Council, the National Apprenticeship Service, Leeds City College, and Leeds College of Building.

BULLDOZERS
IN MECCA REDEVELOPMENT: Mecca has seen the destruction of several heritage sites which are religiously significant to Muslims
TO BE RAZED: Proposals by developers indicate that the House of Malawid is to be brought down. Scholars believe this is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh)
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Fresh plans to erect a modern complex on the site of the birthplace of the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh), as part of a multi-billion-dollar redevelopment of the pilgrimage city of Mecca have surfaced this week. Sources reveal that the Saudi government has granted permissions that yet another historic site of religious significance is to be destroyed. The sweeping redevelopment, which aims to increase the capacity for more pilgrims, has already seen many sacred sites and structures ravaged in Mecca. Now, Yorkshire Muslims have strongly condemned such degrading plans to destroy a heritage site, with
Calls to oppose plans to destroy one of the last few remaining religious sites in birthplace of Prophet
an urgent call for Muslims in Britain to sign an online petition in protest against the proposals in Mecca. The site in question in the birthplace of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh), is a library, which stands on a plinth just a few metres away from the Masjid alHaram (Grand Mosque). The library, named ‘House of Malawid’ - a small building, which is rarely open to visitors, had been built in the 1950s to hide and protect what lay beneath. It sits directly on top of what are believed to be the remains of the house, which scholars believe, is where Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) was born. But the construction company in charge of redeveloping the area, the Saudi Binladin Group, had suggested that it be brought down so as to make way for a new residence for the Imams and an adjacent
presidential palace. At a strategic meeting the held at Leeds Makkah Masjid participants agreed that the expansion of the two cities, Makkah and Madina was vital to make way for the growing numbers of pilgrims in a rapidly expanded and inter-connected world, but it should not be done at the expense of destroying Islamic heritage. Qari Asim MBE, Imam of Makkah Masjid, said: "We need to raise awareness amongst the Muslim masses. “We urge Muslims to write to the Saudi embassy to demonstrate their opposition to the continued destruction of Islamic heritage. "There is no easy solution to this problem, but standing aside in ignorance or with indifference is not an option.” One of the participants of the
meeting, Dr Khalid Muneer, said: "Much of this vandalism against Islamic historic - with direct link to the Prophet- is inspired by Wahabism. “This ideology has destroyed so much of Islamic heritage that had been preserved for centuries. It is also shocking that the average Muslim is either blissfully unaware of what is happening or ambivalent." This destruction of historical sites is not a new phenomenon. The house of the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Khadijah (SA) has been destroyed and replaced with a block of toilets. Further up the hill, centuries-old neighbourhoods have been flattened to continue the marching line of hotel towers, whilst a visit to the holy cemetery of Baqi’ reveals unmarked graves.

MONKEY BUSINESS: (l-r) Bradford College students with Piers Telemacque, Students’ Union President
Going bananas By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford College and its Students’ Union have literally gone bananas in a bid to raise awareness of ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ which runs until 9th March 2014. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Dressed up as giant bananas, members of the Students’ Union will break out into spontaneous dance routines during the lunchtime period to raise awareness on this important issue. The humble banana is the mascot for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight. According to the Fairtrade Association, in the last 10 years, the UK supermarket sector has almost halved the shelf price of loose bananas while the cost of producing them has doubled, trapping many of the farmers and workers who grow them in a cycle of poverty. The campaign aims to transform the banana industry,
Eager college students bid to raise awareness of Fairtrade goods making bananas fair. This means that every banana farmer and worker earns enough to have a decent standard of living, works in conditions that are safe and has rights and benefits. It also means bananas are produced in a way that is environmentally sustainable too. Bradford College and the Students’ Union have joined forces to spearhead a campaign to make Bradford College a Fairtrade College. Backing the campaign, Andy Welsh, Group Chief Operating Officer said: “The Fairtrade mark really matters. We are delighted to be working with the Students’ Union on such an important issue.” Staff and students will also visit Fairtrade places near the College and find out more about what Fairtrade means. An expert will be on hand during the walk and there will be an opportunity to sample Fairtrade produce.
Other initiatives taking place during the fortnight include: lunchtime Fairtrade stalls, petitions; ‘Where does your food come from?’ classroom sessions; Fairtrade fruit smoothie bike peddled in association with Sustrans/BikeHub. Piers Telemacque, Students’ Union President concluded: “It’s great to work alongside the College, students and staff in a combined effort to raise awareness on the impact and importance of going Fairtrade. We hope our efforts will pay off by Bradford College becoming a Fairtrade institution, where we will be able to massively educate students and staff about the benefit of Fairtrade for farmers across the world. Hopefully by doing our bit at College we can influence the spending habits of people at home.” Find out more about Fairtrade Fortnight on the Fairtrade website: http://foncho.fairtrade. org.uk/

Welcome to the House of Quirk A team of students from a Bradford sixth form have taken a ‘quirky’ idea and turned it into a successful business model, as part of a regional enterprise competition. Eight teens studying business at Bradford Girls Grammar School launched the ‘House of Quirk’ earlier this academic year, selling unique, 2Dstyle bags in hope of winning the Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP). Under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs Howarth, the girls - Aisha Karim, Zohra Zahid, Shamaailah Baig, Momina Mahmood, Sarah Zahid, Gahad Ashour, Aisha Hussain and Sabeena Hafeez - had to launch their own business from scratch, with everything from raising their own share capital, choosing and buying a product(s), writing a business plan and taking the product to market. In April 2014, the 25 teams taking part are required to present their company, and their results, to a panel of independent business advisors who decide on an overall winner. “The LEAP programme offers our sixth form students a unique opportunity to gain hands on business experience,” said Mrs Howarth, LEAP Coordinator. “Students learn first-hand the skills necessary to run a successful business.” Following a business training day at Allerton High School at the beginning of October the team of students worked together to develop their LEAP company ‘House of Quirk’; a

However, the decision as to which particular items to stock came after we had conducted a market research survey amongst girls of our age who we identified as our target customers.” With the products sourced from China, and seen on the arms of celebs such as Katy Perry in the past, the girls have already been forced to order more stock after selling out before Christmas. Just over one year ago, up and coming teenage calligraphist, Ismail Hussayn, spoke to the Asian Express newspaper about his chosen career and over the past 12 months his reputation has gone from strengthto-strength. The 19-year-old is a master of Arabic calligraphy, and is reinventing the art form, removing the image of a middle-age stereotypical artist, to a young, energetic one. Originally born in Birmingham, Ismail grew up in London and took the courageous step to move up north whilst still in his teens as he attempted to make it as an artist. “Never did I really think I would be doing this as a full time career but thankfully, after meeting the right people and working extremely hard, that is what this passion of mine is turning into,” he said. Ismail has produced work for the likes of boxer, Amir Khan; Arabic singer, Maher Zain; comedian Omar Regan and Halifax’s own, Jack Carol, from Britain’s Got Talent. As his work continues to spread across the country, the young artist’s profile has improved significantly from having just over 3,000 social media followers a year ago, to more than 10,000 now. Ismail is currently touring the UK with the Road to Inspire show, whereby he performs calligraphy live, alongside fellow entertainers. He explained how he got involved with the project and how the two dates already passed have been huge successes. He said: “The whole idea behind the tour came from when I began working with the charity Human Appeal and it was them who actually
suggested it. “The tour is not just your usual exhibition event where you eat, watch a show and then go home. We give people the chance to eat, and then let them meet with the performers, take pictures, have entertainment, and then finally go home, so it is more of a full package. “I hope by doing the tour that I am able to reach out to the youth who have the ability but perhaps not the confidence to express their talents. “I’ve had to work so hard to get where I am and hopefully it will show others that they can achieve what they want if they work at it.” Ismail is the main performer on the tour and is supported by Nabila Bee, a fashion blogger; Sohail Rehman, a wheelchair bound football coach; Amerah Saleh, a spoken word artist and poet; and Ashley Chin aka Muslim Belal, an actor and spoken word poet. “We have so far done shows in Glasgow and London and the response to them was crazy and the feedback has been amazing,” he added. “We all try really hard to inspire, not just entertain the audience. I’ve had people come up to me during shows and ask for life advice. Even though it isn’t necessarily what I do, I am here for everyone and have to try and be an inspirational figure because I’m in the public eye.” The Road to Inspire Tour 2014 has five dates remaining in Leicester, Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester and Blackburn. For more information about Ismail visit his Facebook page, House of Calligraphy, or Twitter, @IsmailHussayn.

Rate relief
Bradford Council’s Executive is to decide whether to implement two schemes to stimulate business and the local economy by providing Business Rate relief. The Government allows local authorities to use discretionary powers to promote business in local areas using rate relief. There are two new temporary schemes suggested, one called Retail Rate Relief and the other called the New Build Empty Property Relief. The Retail Rate Relief scheme provides relief up to £1,000 for certain occupied retail properties. In addition it provides for 50 per cent relief for businesses who move into empty retail properties that have been vacant for over 12 months. This scheme will apply from April 2014 to March 2016. The New Build Empty Property Relief scheme is intended to provide an incentive for regeneration. It reduces the risk of people who invest in new build commercial properties having to pay rates on empty property. The scheme allows for up to 18 months exemption from date of completion. The Executive will decide whether to adopt the schemes at its meeting in City Hall on Tuesday, 11th March.

‘It’s a growing problem’ Know the signs If you have one, or a number of the conditions below, you are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes: • Being from a South Asian background • Have a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 • Have a close relative with condition • Are over 40-years-old • Have high cholesterol or blood pressure • Your waist is over 37 inches (for men), or 31.5 inches (for women)
AWARENESS: Moahmmed Sharaz, who runs a pharmacist in East Bowling, Bradford, wants to see more people come forward and take advantage of free diabetes tests
Concerned pharmacist approaches Asian Express to discuss concerns surrounding diabetes and the South Asian community By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
With more than 2.5million people already diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the UK, a Bradford pharmacist has been speaking out about the need to find the other ‘missing million’. Mohammed Sharaz, who runs Lloyds Pharmacy on Coventry Street, East Bowling, is just one professional who has seen a rise in the number of people being diagnosed with the condition, especially from South Asian backgrounds. People from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and neighbouring countries are statistically six times more likely to suffer from the condition than their European counterparts and Mr Sharaz believes it is a statistic which cannot be ignored. “With so many people already diagnosed with the condition, the word is definitely beginning to spread, yet there are still so many undiagnosed cases out there,” he explained. “People are beginning to come forward more often but there is still that fear factor of ‘what if I’m diagnosed?’ and then people instantly assume they will need to start self-injecting. “This isn’t the case and we need to get rid of that idea. If you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, firstly we can try and control it through a diet, then if that doesn’t
“With so many people already diagnosed with the condition, the word is definitely beginning to spread, yet there are still so many undiagnosed cases out there.” work, through tablets, and only as a last resort do we recommend injecting insulin.” Type 2 diabetes is a long term health condition characterised by high levels of glucose in the blood, meaning there is too much sugar in the bloodstream and the body can’t get rid of it. Common symptoms include tiredness,
increased frequency to urinate, blurred vision and dried eyes. If undiagnosed, sufferers can develop serious problems, from heart and kidney disease to blindness. A diet with high amounts of sugar, fatty food and carbohydrates, significantly increases the chances of somebody having the disease, whilst other likely risk factors include, having a high blood pressure and cholesterol, being over 40-years-old and having relatives with the condition. As the condition continues to affect more people across the UK, Lloyds Pharmacy’s, such as the one Mr Sharaz runs, have begun to offer free Type 2 diabetes checks for everybody. “By doing the tests for free, we hope to make more people aware about the condition,” Mr Sharaz said. “We take a small blood test from your finger and check all the symptoms – it only takes between two and five minutes and you will get an immediate answer. “Some people come in and go away really happy because they don’t have the condition despite having most of the symptoms whilst others are glad to be diagnosed early so there is a better chance to fight it. “We are trying to find the missing million and hopefully by raising the awareness, we can do just that.”

Wrestling a thief AWARDED: Restaurateur, Ali Kurnaz, was awarded a special accolade after chasing a would-be-thief through Brighouse after seeing him snatch an elderly woman’s handbag
Local hero awarded for coming to the rescue of 79-year-old lady

A Brighouse restaurateur was just one of West Yorkshire’s residents who were awarded for their courage at a recent police awards ceremony which commended our everyday heroes. Ali Kurnaz, 39, from Brighouse, was awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation after he tackled a wouldbe-thief following a mile long chase through the town centre. After seeing a 79year-old woman ‘wrestled’ to the floor by a man who snatched away her handbag, the local resident took it upon himself to bring the assailant to justice. “I just remember standing outside the restaurant following the dinner rush and seeing this man struggling with an old lady across the road,” he explained. “I wasn’t willing to stand for it and so gave chase to him for about a mile through Brighouse before finally tackling him near the canal and calling the police. “I didn’t do it for a reward but because I believe it is very important that we stand up for people in these situations and show our true colours. The poor woman could have been severely injured the way she was just thrown to the ground and it really
made me angry to see it.” Mr Kurnaz, who runs Meze Restaurant in the town centre, was not present at the awards ceremony but will receive his accolade, a signed certificate from the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Mark Gilmore, through the post. He added: “It is obviously nice to be recognised by the police but I have to say it is nicer seeing the lady (who was involved in the attempted walking theft) around, she has even called in here a couple of times.” As well as Mr Kurnaz, a number of other ‘community champions’ were awarded for their selfless efforts. In another astonishing act of bravery, Bradford resident, Imran Hussain, followed a vehicle which he had earlier seen hit a pedestrian on Great Horton Road and drive off from the scene. Finding the car around three miles from the incident, Mr Hussain, a local taxi driver, confronted the three male suspects and demanded they return to the scene of the crime and take responsibility for their actions. Unfortunately, the injured man died from his injuries but, as a direct consequence of the Bradford resident’s actions, the driver of the offending vehicle was convicted of

CHAMPIONS: Anam Malik and Ranji Venkateswaran both picked up Gold medals at the Biology Olympiad, a national competition which encourages students to learn about science
stage set for Leeds student By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Yorkshire’s becoming somewhat of a hub for gold medallists and the county’s latest double delight came away from the athletics field as Leeds’ biology masterminds took over. Eight students from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) claimed success in round one of this year’s Biology Olympiad, with two students picking up prestigious gold medals. The competition was designed to recognise A-
level students for their knowledge beyond the curriculum and inspire them to extend their study of the subject. Six students from GSAL were commended with accolades such as medals and certificates, yet it was only Anam Malik and Ranji Venkateswaran who came away with the top gold. Ranji achieved a record high score for GSAL of 58 points, enough to qualify her to compete for a place on the team to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad.
“I was really surprised to get a medal and excited at the possibility of making the national team,” she said. “It’s been good to push ourselves using the extra reading we have done for university
interviews and to measure our performance against students from other schools.” Silver medals went to Yasmin Khan, Trina Seal and Yash Singh, bronze to Jacob Fingret and
certificates of commendation to Bradley Metcalfe and Ellen White. The Biology Olympiad is run by UK Biology Competitions, a Special Interest Group of the Society of Biology.

City striker scores a hit with pupils SPEAKER: Lady Royd Year 5 pupils, Sahar Qureshi and Emily Johnson, welcomed Bradford City forward, James Hanson, to the school last week
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Pupils from Lady Royd Primary were thrilled to welcome Bradford City striker James Hanson to the school last week to speak about his move from co-op shelf stacker, to Wembley goal hero. The towering centre forward spoke to pupils about the motivation and determination needed to succeed in life and about his own accomplishments in football. After a short montage of the club’s finest goal scoring moments, and a sing-along to the Bantam supporter’s song, the 26-yearold was happy to answer questions from his enthralled audience of young fans. He talked about his love of football from a very young age and playing for Huddersfield Town Academy, a team that is still his favourite today. Hanson started his senior career playing semi-professional non-league football with Eccleshill United and Guiseley, balancing his football career with a job in his local Cooperative supermarket. With 46 goals scored in just two seasons he said he was ‘delighted’ to catch the eye of Bradford boss Stuart McCall who immediately signed him for Bradford City, where he has been a fan’s favourite since 2009.
A hero’s reception for Bantams star
Born and raised in Bradford, he admitted that being a professional footballer is his absolute dream job, especially playing for his local team and even better when the team is playing well. “I have been at Bradford City now for six years and I love every minute of it,” he told his young admirers. Asked about his training and particularly how he scored so many goals, James explained how he trained every day, with the schedule dependent on the matches ahead. He put his goal-scoring success down to shear hard work and having the right attitude and encouraged all the children that, whatever they chose to do, these were certainly the best qualities to adopt. Finally, as might be expected, he was asked about that winning goal against Aston Villa that secured Bradford City’s historic place in the League Cup final at Wembley. “I had not scored for a while so I was particularly pleased with that goal” he said. “It felt like the best feeling in the world when it went in the back of the net.” Staff at Lady Royd added their gratitude to the striker for calling in to the school, with Mr Sheard adding: “He is a very inspirational young man and a great role model for our young pupils…and of course he is from Bradford.”

Bradford University students call for Imran Khan to be sacked as Chancellor Serious discontent has grown among students of the University of Bradford over the constant absence of its vice chancellor Imran Khan. Khan has been so embroiled in Pakistani politics that he hasn't attended a single graduation ceremony since 2010. The University's student union has now floated a motion to drop the cricketing legend turned politician in Pakistan from the highest post. The motion, which was raised by Mohsin Tanveer, will be voted on by the student's union next month. Tanveer said: "Many students are unhappy with the fact that they have been denied the opportunity to engage with the chancellor on a regular basis." Khan was appointed to the post in December 2005 and is
the fifth chancellor of the University since its inception in 1966. The University defended Khan with its chief executive Professor Brian Cantor who runs the university asking students to show sympathy. Cantor said: "Our chancellor has a major political role in Pakistan, a country which has serious problems with terrorism, education and poverty. “While I understand that it is frustrating for students that Khan has not attended an award ceremony at Bradford for some time, I have urged students to be sympathetic to the situation in Pakistan and the responsibility Khan has to improving the state of the country. “I have appealed to the better nature of our student body to be more supportive of the work Khan has to carry out as a politician."

The property was handed over to its tenant, Shamsadin Mahrami, by Leeds Councillor Peter Gruen and Jon Hinchcliff, general manager from sc4L Keepmoat, last week. Leeds City Council is working with Sustainable Communities for Leeds (sc4L) Keepmoat to bring properties up to standard and make sure that extra housing is made available in the city. A Muslim fun-day, which was due to be held at Legoland Windsor this weekend, has been forced to be cancelled after far-right extremists targeted the event. Racial tension was stirred after more than 1,000 Muslim families were due to attend a private event at the resort in Windsor, Berkshire, on Sunday 9th March. The attraction received threatening phone calls, emails and social media posts for being hired exclusively by the Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF). Legoland decided to cancel the event following talks with the organisers and Thames Valley Police, and officials will shut the 150-room hotel this weekend. The theme park itself was always planned to be closed to the public this weekend and will reopen for the 2014 season on 14th March, a spokeswoman said. She said: “Unfortunately the Legoland Windsor resort has had to close the hotel on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March 2014 after threats from rightwing groups made against the resort. “The hotel closure follows the cancellation of a private event that was due to take place on Sunday 9th March prior to
the theme park reopening for the 2014 season on Friday 14th March. “We are extremely sorry that we've had to cancel guest bookings and wholeheartedly understand the disappointment of those families that will be unable to attend, particularly as we haven't been able to give them more notification because of the dynamic nature of this situation.” In a statement posted on its website, the MRDF said it had received a number of threats over the past few weeks and despite working to find a conclusion with the theme park had to accept the event was to be cancelled. “Together with these threats, publication of several articles in the national press helped fuel further hatred and resentment towards the event, resulting in further negative impact on the security of the event,” it read. “It was evident from these hate articles and threats that this was not an attack on MRDF alone but was an outright attack on Islam and Muslims in the UK. “Although we worked hard with Legoland to find a solution to the threats and negative press, Legoland made the decision to cancel the event as they could not guarantee the safety of the attendees and their staff."

Leeds curry house set for closure
Plans for a new high-end hotel project in central Leeds could spell the end for one of the city’s most well-known curry houses. Akbar’s Restaurants have become some of the most recognisable establishments in the county, yet it seems their Greek Street premises may not be running much longer if the proposed 90-bedroom hotel receives planning permission. The work will require the demolition of a derelict mechanical stacker car park and the restaurant – both buildings owned by recently refinanced Evans of Leeds. An application was submitted to Leeds City Council last year seeking permission for the construction of a luxury hotel,

The hotel will be ‘high-end’ with a four-star plus accommodation rating and will be operated by Dakota Hotels. Subject to further detailed approval of the proposed building materials, the hotel will feature a mix of black cladding at ground and first floor and a grey treatment for upper floors in keeping with Dakota's other venues. Bond Court and is currently in the process of refurbishing Minerva House and also plans to refurbish Capitol House in the near future. As well as the proposal to demolish the stacker car park and the single storey restaurant, the area of Bond Court will be resurfaced to match the initial phase of works already completed. Various changes to the public highway are also to be carried out on Russell St and Greek St. The plans have been recommended for approval subject to conditions, including the completion of highway works prior to the opening of the hotel to customers. In a report to be scrutinised by
the council's planning committee, the existing area is said to be blighted by the presence of the stacker car park which has now fallen in to disrepair and is no longer used. The report adds that as other buildings in this area are being refurbished, there is now an opportunity to upgrade this part of the city centre. The laying out of a large area of public realm and highway by the applicant, as well as the creation of a new pedestrian route, has been welcomed by planners and the proposal will generate employment opportunities both during the construction and operational phases once opened to the public.

Leeds Bradford broadband connection voucher scheme launched Connection vouchers worth up to £3,000 are now available to small and medium-size businesses across Bradford and Leeds to cover the cost of upgrading to superfast broadband, offering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) the opportunity to transform the way they do business. Funded through the Government’s ‘Superconnected Cities’ programme, the connection vouchers are available to companies in the two cities, commencing 17th February. The programme is being delivered locally by Leeds City Council and Bradford Metropolitan District Council and is part of a national programme, designed to deliver a step change in broadband connection speeds and reliability. The programme covers 22 cities, with Leeds and Bradford securing a £10 million share – the largest outside London – of the total £100 million funding available for the programme. Businesses can apply online for a connection voucher via a dedicated website (www.superconnectedleedsbradfor d.co.uk). The vouchers cover the installation cost up to a maximum of £3,000 with on-going monthly costs being paid for by the business.
The programme isn’t linked to any particular technology – wireless, fibre, cable, mobile and other types of connection are all covered by the programme. Provided the business is an SME based in Leeds or Bradford, they should be eligible for a connection voucher. Cllr David Green, Leader of Bradford Council, speaking ahead of the launch of the Superconnected Leeds Bradford programme, said: “Access to high speed broadband is crucial in a competitive global market and that is the environment our businesses now work and operate in. “Securing an upgraded connection enables companies to share large data files and communicate more effectively with each other and with their customers. Ultimately it helps companies to grow and
prosper which in turn generates more jobs for local people and this benefits us all.” Cllr Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s lead member for development and the economy, said: “The average UK business will need 10 times their current bandwidth within the next five years. This means that high speed broadband is becoming an absolute necessity for businesses. Support for SME businesses in our two cities is welcome and will help significantly improve productivity and competitiveness, in turn
helping to grow the local economy.” Mark Goldstone of Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce said the latest Chamber research showed 92 per cent of companies see broadband as critical to their business: “Broadband is now considered by many to be as vital as electricity and running water and access to a high quality service is one of the key factors when companies look to expand or locate. “High speed broadband is game changing and allows companies to think and operate differently. Technologies such as cloud computing, for example, allow for more efficient use of resources to store and access data, freeing up capital which otherwise would have been invested in expensive server hardware and associated
costs.” Simon Barrett of Bradford-based games development firm Four Door Lemon, said: “High speed internet is vital to our business. In a digital industry, deliveries to our customers – be it gamers or other businesses – are completely dependent on the speed of our connection to deliver updates. “With quicker connections we can iterate faster when making improvements and adjustments to our products and therefore increase our productivity and profit. This scheme is a very welcome benefit to companies in Leeds and Bradford and will help us be more competitive in the global market we operate in.”

FINISHED: A group of runners completed the 12km trek from Halifax to Bradford earlier this week
More than £2,000 raised by fundraising runners
A team of fundraisers from across England took on a mammoth challenge earlier this week as they conquered the hilly route from Halifax to Bradford – on foot. The runners, and walkers, took on the 12km route in hope of raising money for the national charity, Islamic Relief, with all members completing the trek and in turn raising thousands for the cause. In total 18 participants took part, with all ages represented, and one runner travelling from as far as Birmingham to partake in the efforts. Khwaja Arfan Mir organised the event and ran the course with a five kilogram weight on his back. Speaking after the tiresome day, he explained why it was so crucial that the money was raised and how he hoped to hold similar events in the near future.
host of family members and friends and said their support was vital in making the day a success. “It was great to be able to run with so many people; including many from my own family,” he added. “Even my granddad came along to complete the run, albeit he did get his bus pass out for the trip up hill, but he was great. “Whether they walked or ran it, everybody finished and enjoyed themselves.”
“I was hoping to raise as much money as possible so when I saw that we had passed the £2,000 mark it really was fantastic news. It gives us more reason and motivation to repeat the event next year and maybe even make it into an annual thing.” “All the money raised from this day will go to the charity and help people who are suffering in Syria,” he said. “I was hoping to raise as much money as possible so when I saw that we had passed the £2,000 mark it really was fantastic news. The team of runners all completed the route, from Halifax town centre to Centenary Square in Bradford, and received congratulatory medals upon arriving at their final destination. Beauty Top Tips HOME REMEDIES FOR DRY CRACKED HEELS
Dry, cracked heels are the most frequent concern. If these cracks, called fissures, become severe, they may cause bleeding, infection and pain when standing or walking.
What causes dry, cracked heels? • Cold weather and indoor heating. • Ill-fitting shoes and boots. • Improper daily care of the feet. • Standing on your feet all day. • Since this is such a common problem, here are some tips that may help. 8 tips for dry, cracked heels: Heels will move around in shoes and boots that are too big. This causes friction which forms dry calluse. Make sure your shoes and boots are properly sized so that heels don’t move but toes have wiggle room. Wash feet daily with warm, soapy water. Don’t use hot water because it dries out skin. Hot water is also harmful to diabetics and anyone with impaired circulation to the feet. Exfoliate the feet, especially the heels, while washing. Use a wash cloth, pumice stone, or loofah and rub the skin gently to slough off dead skin. Dry the feet thoroughly. Dry well between the toes since fungus and

bacteria like to grow in warm, moist, dark places. Moisturize daily with body lotion. Using a lotion that has urea increases the skin’s ability to hold in moisture. Avoid moisturizer between the toes. Put on cotton socks. Foot soaks are relaxing and helpful if done properly. Limit foot soaks to 10 – 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Soaking for long periods dries out the skin. Use a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar and enough warm, never hot, water to cover the feet up to the ankles. Mild acetic acid in vinegar softens dry skin. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize. Put on clean cotton socks. For an overnight treatment, try the following: massage olive oil mixed with a bit of white vinegar or lemon juice over the feet, concentrating on the heels. Honey is a natural moisturizer so if you want, put some in your mixture. Put on cotton socks. In the morning, wash it off. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize.

The young people who will represent Leeds on the UK Youth Parliament were announced last week, with new faces on board to lead the next generation. The successful candidates were announced at a special event at Leeds Civic Hall, which was attended by elected members, Leeds Youth Council, youth services, schools and family and friends of the candidates. In total three new members of youth parliament were announced as: 16-year-old Shamim Miah and Nicole Sabua, 17, both from the Notre Dame Catholic College, as well as 15-yearold, Minhazul Abedin, from Prince Henry Grammar School. Two deputy member roles were also issued out to fellow Notre Dame catholic College pair, Ciaran Morrison, 17, and Prosper Adam, 17. All successful candidates will now regularly meet with MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision makers. Councillor Judith Blake, executive member responsible for children’s services, said: “Being a member of the Youth Parliament is a great opportunity both in terms of

representing the views of the children and young people of Leeds nationally, as well as offering a chance for each young person to develop the essential skills for a successful future. “In Leeds we have set ourselves the ambition to be a child friendly city, and a key part of this is giving the children and young people of our city a voice. “The new Youth Parliament members and deputies will become the voice of the young people of Leeds on a national scale – what a fantastic opportunity. I’m sure they will face any challenges head on and be great representatives of the city of Leeds.” The new MYPs will need to find out the concerns and needs of other young people in their constituency, and represent these views to decision makers on a local, regional and national level.

EC Ambassador praises language classes for migrants The Bradford-based organisation, QED-UK, has been praised by a European Commission Ambassador for its work delivering English language classes to third country national women, who are mainly from Pakistan. QED tackles grass-root
problems by offering services in health, education and employment to disadvantaged sections of Britain’s eight million ethnic minorities. Its flagship ‘English for Work’ ‘Unity Through Diversity’ and ‘Living in Britain’ courses help migrants improve their English

language and job prospects to promote better integration into British society. Jacqueline Minor, Head of Representation at the European Commission Representation in the UK, visited QED’s offices in Bradford to see first-hand the educational programmes in action
and QED plans for the future. Ms Minor said of her visit: “I learnt a lot about QED and the projects which it's involved. I was delighted to visit and meet one of the English for Work classes where I was very warmly welcomed. It was a great pleasure to meet the women on the course, and I was very impressed by the determination the class showed to improve their English language skills. They all told their stories with different levels of fluency; it was really very heart-warming to see how much effort goes into this important work, both from QED, their lovely teacher and the participants.” She added: “The courses are part funded by the European Union. The story of Europe is a story of integration. In order to make the most of the opportunities and possibilities for residents of the EU there has to be a capacity to integrate, that starts with language.” Jacqueline Minor’s chief duties are to be the ‘voice of the UK’ to the European Commission, reporting back to the Commission in Brussels on the political, economic and social developments in the UK. Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and chief executive of QED, said: “We were delighted to have a visit from the EC ambassador to discuss the EU funded integration courses we deliver in the UK and Pakistan. It was also an opportunity to discuss the EU Pakistani diaspora and ways it could potentially help to alleviate poverty in Pakistan.”

‘Chuck the junk’
Wakefield Council has told local retailers to ‘chuck the junk’ off their checkouts to help tackle obesity. An audit of 22 retailers carried out by the Council, found that most major supermarkets and non-food stores in the district stocked sweets, crisps and other unhealthy bagged snacks at the checkout. In a national survey carried out last year, 90 per cent of people said the lure of junk food at checkouts was partly responsible for weight problems. In the Wakefield district there are more than 175,000 adults and nearly 13,800 children with weight issues – that’s around two thirds of customers. Of 15 food stores checked only Lidl, in Normanton, had a good selection of healthy food and drink options at the tills. Findings from the audit, which was carried out between September and November last year, were fed back to each of the participants and they were urged to improve their policies on the sale of snacks.
Youth group leaders take on community cohesion challenge
TEACH: The Make Bradford British trio, were helping out a local youth group, supporting the message of ‘accepting people for who they are’
Youth Councillors from E:merge, a youth charity based in Bradford, met together for a day with Desmond Henry, Rashid Khan, Damon Scully, three stars of the award winning documentary ‘Make Bradford British’. Part of the day was spent considering what makes someone British; with all participants completing the 2014 citizenship test with varying results ensuing. The youth councillors had the opportunity to ask the television trio more about the MBB show itself, what it was like and the response they have had since. They learned more about themselves as a community of E:merge in Bradford and the possible impact they can make in that community. Messages about the importance of dispelling myths about young people, breaking down barriers of prejudice and ignorance,

accepting people for who they are once you get to know them, and not believing everything you hear in the media about a certain type of person, were all reinforced throughout the day. Feedback from all at the end of the event was positive, with the desire to repeat the day with more young people from different parts of the city and the youth councillors taking more of a leadership role. “It was inspiring to meet Desmond, Rashid and Damon- to hear about how their shared experience on the TV programme MBB brought people who wouldn’t normally meet together, E:merge youth worker, Emma Bonfield said. “We want to be able to learn from them and celebrate the difference of each person who comes to E:merge.”

In Distress
T
he remedy of Distress for Rent allows a landlord to enter a tenanted property and seize goods until any outstanding rent is paid. If the rent is not paid, then the landlord is entitled to sell the goods and use the proceeds to discharge the unpaid rent. This ancient remedy is frequently used by landlords to apply effective pressure on tenants where rent is unpaid. However, in order to address the perceived imbalance between the rights of landlords and tenants, a new statutory regime known as Commercial Rent Arrears Recovery (CRAR) will shortly come into force on 6 April 2014. The major changes to the existing regime are as follows:• CRAR can only be undertaken by certificated enforcement agents (bailiffs). • The tenant must be given 7 days’ notice in writing before the bailiff takes control of any goods. • The notice must be hand-delivered to the tenant. • The 7 days notice period does not include Sundays, Bank Holidays, Good Friday and Christmas Day. • The written notice must contain details of the debt, the amount outstanding including interest and enforcement fees plus any additional costs of enforcement in the event that the outstanding amount remains unpaid. • The bailiff can attend at the property to take control of goods on any day of the week between the hours of 6am and

9pm. • If the tenant’s business operates outside the hours of 6am and 9pm then the bailiff can attend at any time when the business is in operation. • CRAR only applies to commercial rent and cannot be used if any part of the property is residential. • Only rent arrears can be recovered as part of CRAR. • In order to use CRAR, a minimum of 7 days’ unpaid rent will be necessary The main point of concern for landlords is the requirement to give 7 days’ notice before any action can be taken to secure the tenant’s goods. If it is likely that the tenant will remove goods from the premises, the landlord can first seek an order from the Court dispensing with the requirement to provide notice to the tenant. In the event that obtaining such an Order is not possible, there is a significant risk that an unscrupulous tenant would deliberately remove items from the premises in order to frustrate the process. Whilst the new regime provides greater protection to tenants, it does significantly weaken the position of landlords, to whom the current regime of Distress of Rent can be a useful and effective mechanism of obtaining payment of outstanding rents. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of Commercial Property law, to include the drafting of leases and advising on any disputes which may arise including unpaid rent.

David Ward’s Business survey shows 84% of Bradfordian Businesses say staying in EU is best for Britain
APPRENTICESHIP: NG Bailey apprentices Nathan Waters (left) and Chris Taylor are pictured with White Rose Shopping Centre manager Dean Stratton
White Rose provides a stepping stone for Nathan and Chris White Rose Shopping Centre has been providing an important stepping stone for two apprentices as they prepare for the next stage of their careers. 21-year-old Nathan Waters, from Kippax, and Chris Taylor, 20, from Bramhope, are approaching the end of their four-year electrical apprenticeships with engineering, IT and facilities services business NG Bailey, which provides on-site services at the shopping centre. The apprenticeship scheme, which involves attendance at Leeds College of Building, where they will shortly be taking their final exams, has provided Nathan and Chris with the opportunity to gain vital experience and develop their skills at a number of major locations in Yorkshire, including the White Rose. Both young men said they had gained invaluable lessons during their time as apprentices and were thankful for the opportunity. “It has been fantastic working at White Rose because the work is diverse and there is always something new to learn,” Nathan said. Fellow student Chris added: “I have gained a lot of practical experience seeing how a huge and complex building works.” Both are hoping to continue their
careers with NG Bailey upon completion of the program, something director Julian Barwell seemed keen to make happen. He said: “We are committed to providing the best possible training environments to our apprentices, giving them the necessary training and mentoring that they need to take them from apprentice to fully qualified engineers. “We are grateful to both our clients and our engineers who support their learning and act as mentors to them.” White Rose Centre manager, Dean Stratton, added: “As part of our commitment to providing employment and training opportunities for local people, we are delighted to work with key business partners such as NG Bailey and our cleaning and security providers OCS, on employee development. We wish Nathan and Chris every success. “It has been particularly pleasing to see the number of young people who have found work at the centre through the recent opening of new stores, cafés and restaurants and I would strongly advise anybody who is seeking employment to pay a call to The Point at White Rose, where they can receive advice on training and find out about job opportunities.”
PIA set for shake-up as privatisation closes in Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, approved, in principal, a plan which would help see the start of the revival of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) last week. PIA is currently running in losses of millions of pounds and in order to break even within a year, a target Mr Sharaz seems to believe is possible, cost-cutting measures and increased revenue will spearhead the ‘back-on-track’ program. Under the proposed plan, 20 newgeneration, narrow-bodied and fuelefficient planes will be inducted into the fleet with Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 as the preferred options. Alongside the purchase of the aircrafts, four Boeing 777s and four ATR 72-500 aircraft will be brought into PIA under a ‘dry lease’. Meanwhile, the sale of four Boeing 747
planes and 12 Airbus aircrafts, currently owned by PIA, is expected to help the company raise important capital. The decision comes at a time when all eyes are on the proposed privatisation of PIA. The government has given a written assurance to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that 26 per cent shares of PIA will be sold by the end of this year. Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar, said: “Continuous injection of resources into the SOEs (state-owned enterprises) is fiscally not sustainable on an indefinite basis and the most viable option available is to structure them through strategic partnership with the private sector after 26 per cent off-loading of shares.”
Bradford East MP, David Ward, has surveyed over 2,500 businesses in Bradford and discovered that a significant 36.22 per cent thought that leaving the EU would have direct negative effects for their company with an overwhelming 84 per cent of those surveyed believing that staying in the EU would be in Britain’s best interests. The results from David’s business survey also show that measures introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government have been significantly beneficial to businesses in Bradford. David’s survey was sent to over 2,500 businesses from a variety of different industries across his Bradford East constituency. The survey asked a range of questions on significant issues that might affect business in Bradford. The businesses survey ranged from those who had 0-250 employees and included businesses from an assortment of sectors such as retail, textiles, process and manufacturing and construction. The results from the survey showed that, of businesses who answered: • An overwhelming 84.17 per cent believe that staying in the EU would be in Britain’s best interests. • 36.22 per cent think that if Britain left the EU this would directly negatively affect their business, and in some cases even cause their business to close. • 60.19 per cent believe that Britain should focus on building further trade links with the EU/the European Economic Area. The survey also revealed
just how beneficial measures introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government were for businesses: • 71.3 per cent feel that the Regional Growth Fund, set to give grants to growing businesses to invest in particular projects, will support their business. • A huge 88 per cent said that the £2000 cut in National Insurance contributions will help their business. • And 67 per cent said that the £1500 grant to help take on an apprentice will be beneficial for their business. Commenting David said: “It was great to survey local businesses to find out their views on issues that affect businesses and jobs in Bradford. It’s clear from the survey results that the UK’s membership of the EU is vital for jobs and businesses in Bradford. “The Liberal Democrats are the only main Party that are firmly supporting Britain’s place in the EU. Our strong support for membership does not mean we think that the European Union is perfect – continued reform is necessary and we have already achieved reforms such as securing an historic cut to the EU budget. “However, as this survey shows, the benefits of the UK being within the European Union are unquestionable. Around half our trade and nearly half of our foreign direct investment comes from other EU member states, 3.5 million UK jobs are linked to our trade with the EU and our membership of
the EU brings an average net benefit of a whopping £3000 for every household each year. “The surveys also show that several measures the Liberal Democrats have implemented in government to aid businesses have been extremely significant for businesses in Bradford and have encouraged growth. “I will continue to coordinate and work with businesses and the local community in Bradford to make sure I bring about a stronger economy for my constituents.” Commenting Yorkshire and Humber MEP, Edward Macmillan-Scott said: “The business survey from David shows that we cannot ignore the message from major employers about how important the EU is for jobs and growth. “Also a major survey by The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in November last year showed that eight out of ten British companies want to stay in the EU. Both claim that leaving Europe would put millions of British jobs at risk. “In addition, a YouGov poll showed that 4,641 businesses in Yorkshire & Humber would be forced to close if the UK pulls out, resulting in potential job losses of up to 124,790. “These figures are just a reminder of how important the EU is for Britain and why the Liberal Democrats are on the winning side of what's right for Britain. Even though we agree that the EU needs reforms, we are the party on the side of business. We are the party of ‘in’.”

UK mortgage approvals highest since 2007 British banks approved more mortgages in January than in any month since September 2007, just after the start of the financial crisis. Mortgages for homes purchases rose to 49,972 in January, the highest level since September 2007, from 47,086 in December,
the British Bankers' Association (BBA) said. BBA data does not include lending by building societies, which are included in Bank of England (BoE) data released the following week. "Following on from last month, mortgage borrowing continues to rise compared to a year earlier as mortgage assistance schemes help first time buyers and housing chains more generally," BBA Director of Statistics David Dooks said about the data.
The data showed the number of mortgages rose 57 percent from a year ago, although they remained below levels of more than 70,000 seen in late 2006, before the financial crisis. Net mortgage lending rose 398 million pounds in January, compared with 389 million in December. Concern about the strength of the housing market prompted the Bank of England and the government to say in November that it would stop encouraging banks to lend to home-buyers under their Funding for Lending Scheme. But the government's Help to Buy scheme remains in place to guarantee low-deposit mortgages. The pick-up in the housing market has accompanied a rapid rebound in Britain's economy last year - one of the fastest among industrialised nations. BoE officials have stressed that if the property market needs to be reined in, they range of tools other than interest rates.

Birmingham City owner sentenced to six years
SENTENCED: Birmingham City owner, Carson Yeung, was handed a six year prison sentence earlier this week after being found guilty of money-laundering approximately £55million
Hong Kong businessman, and Birmingham City Football Club owner, Carson Yeung was sentenced to six years in jail earlier this week for money laundering. In a high-profile case, which law enforcement officials hailed as an important victory to combat money laundering in the global financial hub, Yeung was sentenced in Hong Kong on Friday. Yeung, 54, who was found guilty by a Hong Kong court on five counts of money-laundering more than £50million over several years, is a flamboyant selfmade millionaire. In the detailed exposition of hundreds of suspicious transactions made by Yeung and multiple parties, the trial cast a rare spotlight on some of the murky channels and methods used by underground banks and money launderers in moving illicit capital
between China, Hong Kong and the gambling hub of Macau. "Maintaining the integrity of the banking system is of paramount importance if Hong Kong is to remain an international finance center," said District Court Judge Douglas Yau. "The sentence must include an element of deterrence to discourage those who are in a position to exploit the system for their own gains through money laundering and to send the message that...the law will come down on them with full force." Yeung, who bought Birmingham City Football Club in 2009, stepped down last month as head of the club and its holding company, Birmingham International Holdings Ltd. After Yeung was convicted, club officials said the verdict would have no impact on its day-to-day operations.

Mum of the Year
The founder of a free weekend school in London has been named ‘Tesco’s Enterprising Mum of The Year’. 19 years ago, Ranu MehtaRadia, felt so inspired to bring Hindu children together, that she set up a Saturday school, which intended to retain the children’s heritage whilst promoting their integration into mainstream British society. Now, almost 20 years later, Sai School caters for 300 pupils and has 40 volunteers. In 2005 the establishment even received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in recognition of AWARDED: Ranu Mehta-Radia picked up the ‘Enterprising Mum its of The Year’ award after one of her former pupils nominated her
contribution to society. Despite starting out on a shoestring budget, Ranu’s mission, alongside five other mums, quickly turned into a success story beyond any of their original visions. Ranu, who is married to Atul, 58, and has two children Devi, 24, and Rishi, 22, was nominated by a former student. She says: “Serving the nation remains a priority for us, we want to spread our wings and resonate this message to all children and young people. I’m blessed that my husband and children allow me to get on with it.” Tesco judges added their praise for an ‘incredible woman’. “Ranu is not only enterprising, but incredibly socially conscious, and determined that all children - whatever their background - should grow up as good citizens,” they said.

An Indian man, accused of ordering the killing of his wife in South Africa in 2010, has lost his latest legal battle to block extradition to South Africa. Shrien Dewani, 33, from Bristol, has argued that he should not be forced from the UK to face trial over the death of his wife, Anni, until he has recovered from mental health problems, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dreamworks Animation's green ogre Shrek will star in a family entertainment attraction that will open in London in the summer of 2015, the first of six attractions based on the blockbuster movie franchise that will be built over nine years. Dreamworks licensed Shrek and other characters to Madame Tussauds and Legoland owner Merlin Entertainment, which will build and operate the 20,000 square foot attraction called "Shrek's Far Far Away Adventure," said the companies on Monday. It will be located on London's South Bank, the site of the London Eye Ferris wheel and other tourist spots. Visitors will walk through scenes with live interactive entertainment that tell a story based on Shrek. They can also meet the ogre and other characters from Dreamworks movie franchises including "Madagascar," "Kung Fu Panda," and "How to Train Your Dragon." The Shrek attractions give Dreamworks another way to earn revenue from its popular characters as the company diversifies its business beyond the big screen. "These will be very high-profile Dreamworks-branded locations," Dreamworks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said in an interview. "They are very valuable for us to be able to find new ways to really engage with our audience and the fans of our movies and our characters."
the lord chief justice, Lord Thomas, ruled in January that it would not be ‘unjust and oppressive’ to extradite him if an undertaking was given by the South African government relating to how long he would be kept in the country without trial if his illness continues. Dewani is accused of ordering the killing of 28-year-old Anni, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

Prince Harry, David Cameron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and South Africa's deputy president. Earlier, the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, had announced a memorial stone would be placed in the abbey to honour Mr Mandela, who passed away in December 2013, at the age of 95.
South Africa's first black president, he led the country's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after spending 27 years in prison for his political activities. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate became one of the world's most revered statesmen after preaching reconciliation.

Ex Guantanamo Bay inmate held for suspected Syria terrorism offences A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner was among four Britons arrested on Tuesday 25th February on suspected terrorism offences related to Syria, police said. Moazzam Begg, 45, who was released without charge from Guantanamo Bay in 2005, was detained at his home in Birmingham on suspicion of attending a terrorist training camp and facilitating terrorism overseas. Begg was held by the US government at Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan then Guantanamo Bay for nearly three years after being arrested in Pakistan in February 2002 suspected of being a member of al-Qaeda. After his release, he founded Cageprisoners, a human rights organisation that lobbies on behalf of those held at Guantanamo Bay. "We can confirm that Moazzam Begg was arrested this morning," West Midlands police said in a statement. "This is an arrest, not a charge."
No comment on the arrest from Begg was immediately available. Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. military prison in Cuba, was established in 2002. President Barack Obama said in January that 2014 should be the year to finally close down the internationally condemned facility. Its remaining 155 prisoners were rounded up overseas after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and have been held without trial ever since. The other three held in Britain on Tuesday, a 36-year-old man from Shirley and a 44-year-old woman and her 20-year old son from the Sparkhill area of Birmingham, were detained on suspicion of facilitating terrorism overseas. "All four arrests are connected. They were pre-planned and intelligence-led," said the head of investigations for West Midlands Counter-Terrorism Unit, Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards, in the statement. Concern has been mounting in Britain
over the number of UK nationals travelling to Syria to help rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad. Police fear they may become radicalised by Islamists or attend terrorist camps before training returning to the UK where they could pose a security risk. British police have already arrested 16 people on suspicion of terrorism offences related to Syria this year, some as young as 17, compared to 24 such arrests in all of 2013. "A growing proportion of our casework now has some link to Syria, mostly concerning individuals from the UK who have travelled to fight there or who aspire to do so," Andrew Parker, director general of Britain's MI5 security service, said in a speech last October.

India’s regional parties seal alliance ahead of elections India regional parties met on Tuesday to declare a political alternative to the two main national parties, the ruling Congress and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata (BJP), ahead of national elections due by May. Congress has led coalition governments in the world's largest democracy for the past decade but may struggle to win re-election this year due to a string of corruption scandals and sagging economic growth. The BJP is forecast to emerge as the single largest party but still fall short of a majority. Eleven regional parties have established an alliance to fight corruption, deliver more economic development and strengthen federalism in the run-up to the elections. “It is time for a change and to throw out the Congress from power. The BJP, which claims to be the alternative, has no policies different from that of the Congress,” the regional party group said in a joint declaration. It described BJP ideology as divisive and communal, and offered up their grouping as a ‘secular’ alternative. Regional parties and their often charismatic leaders have become more powerful national players in recent
years. Parties other than Congress and the BJP are set to bag around half of the seats in the elections, according to a poll conducted by pollsters CVoter for the India Today media group. Nitish Kumar, Bihar state chief minister, and Mulayam Singh Yadav, a powerful political leader from the heartland state of Uttar Pradesh, both attended the meeting. Together, the two states account for 120 seats of the 543 at stake in parliament. A representative of Jayaram Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and Left leaders also joined hands in the alternative alliance, often dubbed the "Third Front". A government made up of several regional groups with diverse agendas could prove unwieldy, a potential problem for Asia's third-largest economy, whose growth has slowed for a decade due to the slow pace of reform under Congress' watch. Any third front would need to work hard to counter the rising popularity of Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, analysts say. Modi, who has presided over rapid economic growth during more than 12 years as chief minister of Gujarat, has been wooing voters by pointing to his Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi, currently Gujarat's track record as a leader who cuts red chief minister, is a prime ministerial candidate for India's tape and attracts investment. main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday ordered Google Inc (GOOG.O) to remove from its YouTube video-sharing website an anti-Islamic film that had sparked protests across the Muslim world. By a 2-1 vote, a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Google's assertion that the removal of the film "Innocence of Muslims" amounted to a prior restraint of speech that violated the U.S. Constitution. The plaintiff, Cindy
Lee Garcia, had objected to the film after learning that it incorporated a clip she had made for a different movie, which had been partially dubbed and in which she appeared to be asking: "Is your Mohammed a child molester?" In a statement, Google said: "We strongly disagree with this ruling and will fight it." Cris Armenta, a lawyer for Garcia, said she is delighted with the decision.
On the run
Ukraine's parliament voted on Tuesday to send fugitive President Viktor Yanukovich to the International Criminal Court, while his acting successor expressed concern about "signs of separatism" in Russian-speaking Crimea. A resolution, overwhelmingly supported by parliament, linked Yanukovich, who was ousted by the legislature on Saturday and is now on the run, to police violence against protesters which it said had led to the deaths of more than 100 citizens of
Ukraine and other states. The Hague-based court said it would need a request from the government of Ukraine giving it jurisdiction over the deaths. With an early presidential election set for 25th May, one of Ukraine's most prominent opposition figures, retired world boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko, confirmed he would run. Yanukovich was indicted by the new authorities for "mass murder" on Monday over the shooting of demonstrators in Kiev and is now on the wanted list, having last been seen at Balaclava in Crimea, near Russia's Sevastopol naval base.

Asiana Airlines fined $500,000 US regulators have fined Asiana Airlines $500,000 (£300,000) for failing to help victims of a flight crash last year at San Francisco's airport. Three people died and dozens were injured when Asiana Flight 214 crashed on 6th July 2012. The Department of Transportation said Asiana took up to five days to notify the families of all 291 passengers. Regulators also said the carrier lacked translators and trained crash staff. It is the first time an airline has ever been fined by regulators for failing to obey a 1997 US law that mandates prompt assistance to the families of crash victims. "In the very rare event of a crash, airlines have a responsibility to provide their full support to help passengers and their families by following all the elements of their family
assistance plans," said US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement. "The last thing families and passengers should have to worry about at such a stressful time is how to get information from their carrier." Officials said the Korea-based airline took five days to send all necessary personnel to San Francisco to deal with the emergency. They also said that for at least 24 hours after the crash, Asiana failed to provide a number of families with opportunity to call and find out more information about the
incident. When family members eventually were able to call, they were initially routed to a reservations line rather than a crisis hotline. The Boeing 777 crashed at San Francisco's international airport after the plane came in too low and hit a sea wall. The plane's pilot later said he was worried he hadn't had enough training to properly land the plane without the assistance of the instrument landing system, which was out of service for repairs at the time.

There were two attempted attacks on Syrian convoys transporting chemical weapons late last month, Syrian authorities told the international mission overseeing the removal and destruction of its toxic arsenal, according to a U.N. report on Thursday. The monthly report to the U.N. Security Council of the joint mission of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said the attempted attacks were on 27th January. It gave no
details on the location of the convoys. “In addition, Syrian authorities indicated that ongoing military activities rendered two sites inaccessible during most of the reporting period,” the five-page report said. This delayed in-country destruction of the final quantities of isopropanol, preventing some activities to consolidate chemical material into a reduced number of locations, and preventing the physical verification of chemical material prior to movement on 27th January 2014.
Adidas pull ‘offensive’ shirts
Adidas agreed on Tuesday to stop selling two raunchy T-shirts months ahead of the World Cup in Brazil after the government complained that they associated the country with sexual tourism. One shirt shows a bikiniclad woman with open arms on a sunny Rio de Janeiro beach under the word-play "Looking to Score." The other has an "I love Brazil" heart resembling the upsidedown buttocks of a woman wearing a thong bikini bottom.
Adidas, the world's second-largest sportswear maker, said the shirts would not be sold anymore, adding in a statement that they were from a limited edition that was only on sale in the United States. The shirt designs touched a nerve in Brazil, where people often complain about foreign stereotypes of Brazilian sensuality. Brazil's government is campaigning aggressively to shed the country's reputation as a destination for sex tourism.
Balochistan govt to set up 2,000 capacity girls school with Unicef help The Balochistan government has decided to establish a 2,000 capacity girls schools across the province with the technical and financial support of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and Global Partnership. Girls schools would be established in Balochistan's backward and far-flung areas. “Global Partnership has already decided to provide 34 million dollars in this regard,” Sanaullah Panezai, Unicef's Balochistan chief on education told Dawn.com on Tuesday. Moreover, adviser to the Chief Minister Balochistan on Education, Sardar Raza Muhammad Bareech, stated that the education department has evolved a strategy with the financial and technical support of Unicef and other organisations to make sure provision of education to children of the province. “Our government's priority is education,” he said, adding that all out efforts were being made to ensure early childhood education in the province. He stated that Global Partnership has committed the amount to educate kids of Balochistan. Sardar Bareech said that the recently prepared Balochistan Education Sector Plan was endorsed by all donor agencies and organisations working for the promotion of education in the country. “We are decentralising powers to
districts to solve issues relating to the education on priority basis,” he added. “We are striving to open new schools and make functional the dysfunctional schools,” he said, adding that under the new plan 300 primary and middle schools would also be upgraded. According to government of Balochistan 2.3 million children were still out of schools in the province, plagued by continued Baloch insurgency and growing sectarianism. “These schools would be set up within three years time,” Panezai said. The Balochistan education department has already prepared an education sector plan to ensure implementation of article 25-A of the Constitution.
Girls schools under the proposed program would be established within two kilometres of each other to make sure maximum enrollment of girls. Mr. Panezai said a third party would conduct survey regarding establishment of new schools to ensure transparency in terms of merit. Under the plan, schools can only be established in those areas where there are local girls teachers and the enrollment is 25 to 30. “The data about schools would be webbased so that everyone could access it,” the Unicef education chief stated. The amount would also be spent on establishment of shelters of schools and provision of clean drinking water to kids in the province. Apart from this, Mr Panezai informed that Unicef was developing a Human Resource Information Data, Education Management Information System and Geological Information System of Balochistan Education Department as part of ongoing reforms and ensuring transparency. Balochistan legs behind other provinces in terms of ten key social indicators including education, health, sanitation and clean drinking water among others. Chief Minister Dr Malik Baloch-ledgovernment has for the first time in the history of the province, allocated 24 per cent budget for education sector to bring it at par with other parts of the country.

Why Kangana Ranaut chose to play the role of a ‘simple’ girl
Sweet-faced Kangana Ranaut is Kangan known as Bollywood's fashionista, performa Ranaut’s best ances. but while preparing for Vikas ‘Queen’ sees Kangana as the Bahl's film ‘Queen’, which releases uninhi bited small town girl trying to in cinemas this week, her looks and find her designer clothes were the last thing twist in life’s meaning. The slight Kangana’s saga is the fact on her mind. that she goes on her honeymoon Playing the role of a dumped girl alone, afte r being dumped at the in ‘Queen’, critics have stated that altar, to find a new self. they consider this to be one of
Asian Express caught up with Kangana and found out what made her take up the role in ‘Queen’ AE: People have been praising your performance after watching just the trailer… how do you feel? KR: I am getting amazing reactions. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has apparently tweeted about the trailer. I also met him at a party recently. Mr. Bachchan, Mr. Aamir Khan and Mr. Salman Khan all told me that they are eagerly waiting to watch the film. What else can one ask for? It’s very important to me because I have felt accepted for the first time. I have never received such support for any of my films before.
AE: Vikas Bahl is known to make exceptional films. How was your experience being directed by him in ‘Queen’? KR: What I love about these contemporary filmmakers is their spontaneity. They allow artists to contribute to the film in many ways. Vikas allowed me to write dialogues for the film, not that I was planning to or worked towards it. It just happened very organically. He liked what I was coming up with and he let me write my own dialogues. At the same time, he understands the
needs of an artist. I remember, I was working multiple shifts and was filming for ‘Krrish 3’ and ‘Queen’ simultaneously. One day when I came from the sets of ‘Krrish 3’ and Vikas asked what was wrong with me as I wasn't behaving and walking like my character Rani. I can’t just switch on and switch off. It takes me months to get into a character and I can’t just work like a robot. He understood that and respected me as an artist. He didn't shoot with me that day. It’s nice to work with such a director because you then put your all into his film because he respects you. AE: Could you relate to your character Rani? KR: I don’t really relate to the character. She has major issues. She believes that by changing herself, she can please people around her. Her goal is to keep everyone happy.
She is really naïve. I don’t identify with these traits of her personality. But at the same time, I also come from a middle class background and I understand how and why she feels that way. I have also come from a small city to a big one. But I never had issues like low self-esteem. Everyone has these phases but it’s not something I have experienced throughout my life like Rani has. AE: How was your experience shooting in places like Amsterdam and Paris? KR: We frequently shoot abroad but mainly for songs for which we dress up quite a lot. You look like an actress and people come and take pictures with you (laughs). However, for this film I had a very girl-next-door look and honestly, looked very ordinary. People would look at me and wonder why I am so special and why would someone
make a movie with me (laughs). That was a bit different. People would ask the crew “Is she the leading actress?” You know, people have this idea of a Bollywood actress wearing a chiffon saree and her hair flying (laughs) but that wasn't the case with me. AE: How was your experience attending the Burberry show at London Fashion Week recently? KR: It was really beautiful. London was great as it didn't rain that day. We were expecting it to rain and it didn't. So we were quite lucky with the weather (laughs). It was my first experience at an international fashion week and show. Burberry and I go long back as they have been dressing me for red carpet appearances and events. I was thrilled to see their collection and I loved how they received me. It was just a lovely experience.

Rahul Kohli on life with the Doctor Doctor Who prequel star ‘can’t wait’ to get started Q. How much of a Doctor Who fan are you? A. Prior to being cast in the role, I hadn't really watched much Doctor Who. My Dad was a big fan and would watch it religiously, so it was always on in the house. Once my agent told me I had been cast, my first step was to get up to speed with the show, so I'm fairly deep into it now and really enjoying it. Q. Is there a lot to live up to being cast in its prequel? A. There's definitely a lot to live up to, this is a fantastic franchise with a loyal fan base. You want to do right by the mythology, the fans and at the same time offer something new. It’s a great script with some talented actors attached and I'm confident we can contribute positively to the ‘Who Universe’. Q. To play a role which has only been played by Caucasian actors in the past is something of a pioneering step. How proud are you to do this? A. I'm extremely proud to be taking on this role, for me it’s the future I've always wanted as a British Asian actor. I would love to see more roles out there for ethnic minorities without a racially motivated reason for casting them. Since I was a kid I've always dreamed of playing roles like James Bond or Bruce Wayne, and its courage, like A Wild Endeavour has shown, that can make those dreams become reality. Q. How are you finding it knowing you got the role, but which role is still unknown? A. Well it certainly relieves some of the pressure. Without knowing who exactly I'm playing, I guess there's a blissful ignorance to the weight one might feel in
playing such an iconic character. Q. How do you prepare for something like that? A. Preparing for it has been a great experience. Without knowing the identity of my character, I'm able to approach the script and my role with a certain sense of freedom. Focusing on the here and now, not really worrying about who my character may eventually be. Q. Are you looking forward to getting started? A. I'm very excited to begin shooting although it must be said; research is probably my favourite portion of the acting process. Watching the show, researching the history of the characters and dissecting the script has been a blast. There's so much humour and energy in the story, it makes waiting to shoot unbearable. Q. What are your expectations for the series? A. From a narrative perspective, I hope we're able to entertain Doctor Who fans and gain some new ones along the way. The idea to not reveal the main characters identity will definitely add a level of excitement to each episode. I'm looking forward to finding out together. Q. What kind of feedback have you received from Dr Who fans? A. There's been some great feedback from the fans. I've had people contact me to offer their speculation on who I'm playing (the beard in our promo video seems to dictate their choice). I've even been sent some artwork by a couple of fans which is by far one of the nicest things I've experienced in my career. People are excited and that's the best thing you can have in your corner as you begin production

Much has been spoken about the actress, Preity Zinta, and her drooping stardom lately. The actress apparently is in much financial debt after the failure of her last production which was made on a lavish budget. Multiple leading Indian newspapers and magazines have reported elaborate descriptions of how Zinta is finding it hard to make ends meet, so to say. A visibly miffed Zinta finally issued a press statement rubbishing all what is being said about her. She said: “These reports are completely false and there are no facts to support such baseless claims. As an actor and entrepreneur, these reports are damaging not only towards my reputation but also harm my business interests.” Preity continued: “I have been a resident of Quantum Park, Union Park, Khar in Mumbai for almost a decade and have no plans of moving out of this apartment. “I am currently busy planning the upcoming season with my IPL team and looking forward to several other ventures which will be announced soon. “In the event of any rumours or reports being published, I further request the media fraternity to verify the news with my PR firm.”

FILM: Gulaab Gang DIRECTED BY: Soumik Sen GENRE: Social/Drama STAR CAST: Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Priyanka Bose, Vinitha Menon, Tanvi Rao
The story of Gulaab Gang is reportedly based on the life of Sampat Pal Devi, a self trained activist from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh who was married off as a child and then grew up to fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, domestic violence in the villages of India. In course of time, many women joined her and now she has a force of over 10,000 women who are called the Gulabi Gang. A few years back, with some help from a French NGO, Sampat's fight came into the limelight leading to media coverage and a documentary filmed on her. In the trailers, like we had assumed, Dixit kicks ass. She is shown wielding a baton
with a ferocity normally associated with Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar. She is seen flinging men with one effortless slap. She is seen beating up men. Evidently, Sampat's story has been adapted to suit the requirements of a Bollywood entertainer. Likewise, Dixit is also seen dancing (we are not complaining one bit about that though!). However, what is probably the most refreshing and interesting bit in the trailer is its villain - Juhi Chawla. Yes, you heard right. Juhi is indeed who Madhuri is pitted against in the film. And oh boy, isn't she delicious as the soft spoken, nearly-adorable, baby voiced woman whose smile is pure evil gold! Juhi seems to be playing the part of a politician who takes on Rajjo

And there was never any doubt about who she would marry, as her parents were keen to match her with Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) - the son of a close family friend. But as the wedding draws closer, Vijay drops a bombshell. He calls the whole thing off, citing a mismatch of interests and lifestyles. Devastated, Rani makes a bold decision. She opts to go on honeymoon alone, leaving the country for the very first time! Along the way, she learns more about the world - and herself. (Madhuri) and embarks on an insidious journey to destroy the latter's clout. What makes the film so much more interesting than anything else, is instead of a woman versus man stereotypical battle, Gulaab Gang promises to be a deft exploration of feminity and the woman as an ambitious, strong, sinister, vulnerable entity.
FILM: Total Siyapaa DIRECTED BY: Eshvar Nivas GENRE: Comedy/Drama STAR CAST: Ali Zafar, Yami Gautam, Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher, Sara Khan
While Madhuri turns out to be a real hero with all her brave action sequences, Juhi Chawla has also amazed people with her cunning politician avtar in the movie. With all those bold dialogues and action, the movie is going to be one of the valiant choices of both the Bollywood divas, as far as their filmy career is concerned.

JAGUAR XE This week at the Geneva Auto Show, Jaguar confirmed that it will bring an all-new mid size sports sedan to production - the Jaguar XE. The XE will be the first product from the new advanced aluminium architecture, which was showcased in the C-X17 concept car back in 2013, with global rollout scheduled for 2015. It will be the first aluminium monocoque vehicle in the segment and brings all the benefits of aluminium: lightness and stiffness for impressive handling, performance, refinement and efficiency. The Jaguar XE will be the first user of the Ingenium engines in four-cylinder two-litre petrol and diesel variants. They will be built at Jaguar Land Rover's new UK Engine
Manufacturing Facility. Utilising the most flexible engine architecture ever produced by Jaguar Land Rover, the new engines are promised to be both efficient and powerful – including top speeds of over 300km/h (186mph), and emissions lower than 100g of CO2 per km. Speaking at the Geneva Auto Show Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, confirmed: “We announced just a few weeks ago that our new Engine
Manufacturing Centre would produce a new family of premium, lightweight, lowfriction, low emission four-cylinder petrol and diesel units. “The first of our Ingenium engine range will be used in our all-new mid-sized Jaguar sports sedan – the XE.” The name of the Jaguar XE follows a logical progression, positioned alongside the XF and XJ saloons in the range. Full XE technical and range details will be announced later in 2014.

Vauxhall to unveil turbo-engined streetlegal race sibling With over 300PS generated from its 2.0-litre turbo engine, the Astra VXR Extreme will be the most powerful front-wheel drive Vauxhall ever when it’s unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Derived from last year’s Astra Cup race car that competed in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship, the Extreme is the lighter, more powerful street-legal race sibling to the current Astra VXR. Shorn of 100kg, thanks to liberal use of high-quality carbon components, the Extreme’s natural environment will be the race track. If public reaction is as positive as expected, Vauxhall plans a low-
volume production run for the Extreme. With direct injection and variable camshaft phasing, its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine is the most powerful four-cylinder unit Vauxhall has ever produced. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential. The car is 100kg lighter than a standard Astra VXR thanks to its high-quality, carbon fibre components. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimised rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, bonnet, suspension cross-bracing, engine cover,
wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof. Noticeably lowering the Extreme’s centre of gravity is the in-house manufactured carbon fibre roof which weighs just 2.6kg, compared with a steel roof’s 9.3kg. The wings are made of aluminium and weigh only 800g a piece instead of 2.2kg in steel. Weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and the car’s power-to-weight ratio. Vauxhall has also given the Extreme exceptional stopping power to match, with a Brembo six-piston brake system including 370mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra highperformance, 245/35, 19-inch
tyres, specially developed for the Extreme, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car. In addition, the damper is adjustable, just like in a real touring car racer. Inside the Extreme, the back seats have been taken out and a safety roll bar put in their place. Extreme also gets Recaro bucket seats, with six-point safety belts from Schroth and a carbon-fibre-reinforced, suedecovered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching. The Astra VXR is now the best-selling VXR and the UK remains the largest market in Europe for Vauxhall and Opel’s highest powered models.

Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake super estate revealed Jaguar unveils a more potent version of its most practical model, the XFR-S Sportbrake is powered by a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8. Jaguar has kept us guessing about whether it would build a high-performance XF Sportbrake, but we now have an emphatic answer. Rather than simply building a XFR Sportbrake, Jaguar has skipped straight to XFR-S specification for the most practical model in its range. Set to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show, the Sportbrake joins the XFR-S Saloon and XKR-S as the third member of the ballistic R-S family. Like
its siblings it uses a 542bhp 5.0litre supercharged V8 producing 680Nm of torque – enough to rocket it from 060mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the XFRS Saloon, and on to an identical top speed of 186mph, despite weighing around 90kg more. Jaguar’s designers have translated the Saloon’s pumped up styling into the Sportbrake’s more sensible bodystyle, minus the wild rear wing of course. It does get a much smaller roof spoiler though, along with a deeper front bumper and front splitter to boost downforce at high speeds. Extended and
more sculpted side sills, a deeper rear bumper, 20-inch alloys and a race car-style rear diffuser complete the exterior updates. Inside there’s sports seats covered in stitched carbon leather and a sprinkling of R-S badges, but the Sporbrake’s impressive interior space remains. That means 60:40 split folding rear seats and a boot that extends to 1,675litres with the seats down. Although the XFR-S Sportbrake uses the same basic chassis as the XFR-S Saloon, the rear suspension has been tuned specifically to cope with the extra weight. Thanks to stiffer anti-roll bars,
firmer springs and dampers and a new front suspension knuckle, overall ride stiffness is up by 30 per cent compared to the standard car. Wider tyres, bigger brakes and an electronic differential should ensure it goes, stops and turns just as well as the Saloon. It won’t be quiet either – the central silencer in the exhaust has removed and replaced with an ‘X-piece’ for a booming exhaust note and crackles on the overrun. Jaguar has also made changes to the standard XF range - introducing a R-Sport model. It gets the looks of a performance model, with a chunky bodykit, but is only available with the 161bhp 2.2litre diesel engine returning 57.7mpg and 129g/km. Order books for the new XF models open on April 1, with the XFR-S Sportbrake priced at £82,495. Its closest rivals will be the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes E63 AMG Estate.

Murray joins team Bangkok
Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal led the way in the inaugural International Tennis Premier League (ITPL) draft last weekend as money was thrown around at the cash-rich tournament. The three men are expected to earn seven figure sums for their appearances in the first ever ITPL set to be staged later this year across the Asian continent. The four teams competing, Bangkok, Dubai, Mumbai and Singapore, will each face each other in a number of formats in the tournament set to be held between 28th November and 14th December. Every tie will consist of five matches - men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, mixed doubles and legends singles, with the tournament contested in a round-robin format.
International Tennis Premier League draft sees millions spent The brainchild of Indian businessman, Mahesh Bhupathi, he said that he could not wait for the competition to begin and was delighted to see India’s team snatch the world number one. He said: “As an Indian and the owner of the tournament I'm delighted that Rafa Nadal is playing for an Indian city. “I think the teams are evenly balanced, I'm happy for the players who have been picked, but in a four team playoff there was always going to be some players who were not going to be picked.” Andy Murray will represent Bangkok, whilst world number two, Novak Djokovic, will be on the Dubai team. Women’s world number one, Serena Williams, is set to represent
Singapore alongside tennis legend, Andre Agassi. The full teams are as follow: Bangkok - Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Carlos Moya, Daniel Nestor, Kirsten Flipkens Dubai - Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Goran Ivanisevic, Janko Tipsarevic, Nenad Zimonjic, Martina Hingis, Malek Jaziri Mumbai - Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras, Ana Ivanovic, Gael Monfils, Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza, Fabrice Santoro Singapore - Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, Tomas Berdych, Lleyton Hewitt, Patrick Rafter, Daniela Hantuchova, Bruno Soares, Nicholas Kyrgios
Five game ban
FOOTBALL’S FUTURE: Eden hazard was on hand to launch the Chelsea Asian Star initiative last month which aims to improve the under-representation of young Asian footballers in the sport
Striker found guilty of using offensive gesture After months of sitting on the sidelines, the Nicolas Anelka ‘quenelle saga’ seemed to finally draw to a conclusion earlier this week as the forward was handed a five-match ban. The Frenchman had used the ‘quenelle’ as a celebration following a goal back in December, causing controversy amongst many as the inverted Nazi salute has strong links with antiSemitism. Although, according to a 35-page report published by the independent regulatory commission, there was no proof Anelka was ‘expressing or
promoting’ anti-Semitism, the gesture was in itself offensive enough to warrant his five-match ban. The 35-year-old West Bromwich Albion player had earlier been fined £80,000 by his club and subsequently suspended pending the internal inquiry. Also mentioned in the report was that the English FA, which banned Liverpool striker Luis Suarez for eight games in 2011 after he racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra, had argued for a more severe sanction than the minimum five-match ban. Anelka made the gesture after scoring his first Premier League goal for West Brom against West Ham United on the 28th December. He was found guilty of "abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper conduct" which "included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief" last week.
CONCLUSION: Nicolas Anelka had been waiting since December to hear what punishment he faced after using the ‘quenelle’ as a celebration
Team Khan backs Team Chelsea
Two-time world champion Amir Khan has lent his support to Chelsea’s Asian Star initiative as the club’s ground-breaking programme returns for a sixth year in May. The former world champion and 2004 Olympic silver-medal winning boxer is amongst the most famous Asian sportsmen in the world and had no hesitation in giving his support to the project, designed to tackle under-representation of Asian footballers throughout the game. Eden Hazard launched Asian Star 2014 in February with this year’s event due to take place on Monday 5th May at the club’s state-of-the-art training ground in Cobham, with places still available for players aged between nine and 12. Amir Khan said he was delighted to support the initiative and hoped it would have a ‘huge positive effect’ on young people and the communities they live in. He said: “Chelsea’s Asian
‘Asian Star’ initiative gets thumbs up from boxing icon
Star programme is now in its sixth year and is a great way to get more Asian kids in to sport. “It can be a massive boost for Asian football and I'm sure that it will help more young players from Asian backgrounds get the chances in the game that their talent deserves. “It is well documented that there are only a few British-Asian professional footballers and the Asian Star programme is addressing that and letting people from the Asian community know that they can play football, the talent is there and there are clubs willing to nurture those skills.” When the project begins, the aspiring footballers will be judged on a series of matches and tests specifically designed and used by the Chelsea Academy to examine speed, skill and ability.
The club will also be inviting managers, coaches and scouts from clubs at all levels of the game to identify talented youngsters and information will also be on hand for Asian players to find clubs in their area. “It is not just about finding the football stars of the future it is about getting youngsters interested in sport in general, which in turn leads to healthier lifestyles for the children involved,” Khan added. “The opportunities that the programme offers can be of huge benefit to the young people involved and I wish all those taking part the best of luck.” Applications for this year's tournament are now open via www.chelseafc.com/asianstar or asianstar@chelseafc.com

Runners ready to raise funds for Pakistan orphanage

A group of runners from a Bradford masjid will be taking on the city’s 10K challenge next weekend as they look to raise vital funds for an orphanage in Pakistan. Team NADA will run alongside more than 1,500 other runners at the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10K on Sunday 16th March, fundraising for the Bahn Kurma Orphanage in Azad Kashmir. 10 runners, with some as young as 16-years-old, will run as representatives of the team, led by running fanatic and Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) general secretary, Nazim Ali. For many, it will be their first time taking on such a challenge, yet Nazim explained why the team are eager to hear the words ‘on your marks, get set, go’. “The team are engaging in the run for the very first time and are understandably very excited and motivated to help the vulnerable orphans,” he said. “Over the last few weeks they have been having regular team training sessions in preparation of the challenge, which is a further illustration of our organisation's personal and social development plan so that these young people can grow as individuals and
engage in civic renewal. “Furthermore, it is an example of what can be done if one strives with dedication and commitment.” Upon completion, a group of the runners will head to Pakistan in April on their annual tour and physically hand over the donations in person, whilst meeting with the orphanage’s stakeholders.
Every two years, JOLT organises expeditions all over the world for groups of young people with significant disadvantages. Nazim said: “Ishtiaq is visually impaired however; he has not allowed this to hinder him and has been training with 'Team NADA' in anticipation of the big day. He is a great addition to the team and it is great to see the youth engage with fundraising efforts.”
“It is an example of what can be done if one strives with dedication and commitment.” 'Team NADA' is also supporting 18-year-old Ishtiaq Saleem, a student at Dixons Allerton Academy who is fundraising for the Journey of a Lifetime Trust (JOLT) which is a registered charity that aspires to make a positive lasting difference to the lives of disabled, ill, neglected and abused young people.
He added: “We are also grateful to our corporate event sponsors, W-Childcare, SD Prestige & Performance, Fresh Fillingz Deli Bars, Eco Fireplaces & Kitchens, for their generous donations and support.” If anyone would like to make a donation to 'Team NADA' please call 07825 698283 or e-mail: nazim27@hotmail.com
“I’ve never really been into sport,” he explained. “It was only after completing a half-marathon and then a fullmarathon that I decided that I wanted to push myself more and I was stuck in regards to what to do next. “I came across an article on someone who had run and cycled 2,013 miles in 2013 so I decided I would do 2,014 miles in 2014.” The 2,014 miles were soon raised to the new target after the 27-year-old realised it was the same distance from his home to Syria and so the challenge was set. Raising money for both the Leeds Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross Syria Crisis, Naheem is currently running between eight and 12 miles, three or four times a week, whilst a tenday bike ride is planned for June from Lands’ End to John O’Groats. With hundreds already raised, and almost 200 miles covered, he is already someway to his target, yet insists that
the running is already proving to be more difficult than he had every predicted. “I thought it wouldn’t be that hard actually but how wrong I was,” he said. “When you’re running over such a distance, week in week out, month after month, it soon gets to you. “This pain I’ll go through to complete the challenge is nothing in comparison to a child at the hospital who’s struggling to breath or a Mother in Syria who has nothing to feed her children. “Thinking of the people I’m completing this challenge for is enough to get me up and out on days when I’m feeling down.” Naheem’s next big challenge will come later this month as he takes on the Bradford 10k. If he reaches his target of £1,200 before race day he will also run from Leeds to Bradford before the race, and return on foot after. If you would like to make a contribution towards Naheem and the two causes please visit his donations page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com

2313 in 2014 Leeds fundraiser aims to conquer massive challenge By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Syria may be more than 2,000 miles away from the United Kingdom yet that is not stopping a local runner from covering the distance - on foot and bike, in just 12 months. Naheem Yacub, from Leeds, will run on average a marathon a week, whilst also completing a 1,000mile bike ride later this year, as he raises money for charity. Covering 2,313 miles over 12 months is a big task for anybody to conquer, and for Naheem, who insists he is not a fan of fitness; it will be a completely new venture.
