An innovative trial has been launched in Bradford, where excess cooking oils could soon be used to power a selection of the city’s homes. RESIDENT: Hena Begum has lived on Amberley Street, Bradford, for more than 20 years and was issued with one of the Fat Vats to dispose of her cooking oil

85 residents across two streets in the Bradford Moor area have been issued with ‘Fat Vats’, plastic buckets in which households are urged to put their waste cooking oil rather than pour it down the drain. Over the last five years, 80 sewer blockages have been reported by Yorkshire Water in the Bradford Moor area, with fatty oils clogging up the water flow, the main concern. This new trial not only helps solve the longstanding drainage problem but simultaneously provides homes with renewable energy. The tubs are collected from resident’s homes and taken to a large waste collection unit, provided by renewable energy experts Living Fuels, which is filled and then taken to one of their energy centres for conversion.

A host of Syrian nationals from across the north of England gathered outside a Leeds court earlier this week as their long wait for interviews passed the five month mark. British shores in search for asylum, yet for Leeds’ representatives, they believe not enough is being done fast enough to support them. Syrian refugees in the UK must pass an interview before they can seek employment or even education, and, in the meantime, live off just £35 a week from government funding. Demonstrators gathered outside Waterside Court, on Kirkstall Road, Leeds, on Monday 17th March, to express their frustrations

at ‘not being able to do anything’ whilst they wait for appointments. More than 50 campaigners, most of whom were Syrian asylum seekers, held banners with messages expressing their worries, and calling for help. Syrian national, Fawaz Alghofari, 43, has lived in Leeds since 2000, yet helped organise the peaceful protest after witnessing his homeland’s situation go from ‘bad to worse’ in recent months. He explained what he was hoping to achieve through the demonstration, emphasising the need for Leeds’ asylum seekers in particular to be catered for. “Almost all of these men and women have been here for five months now and still have yet to be interviewed by the UK border agency,” he said. “They are being forced to live on the smallest budget every week, with no access to education, college, English language courses or any jobs. “We are here today to get a voice for the Syrian people and help them get a quick interview by the UK border agency and get their settlement. “They are not here to get benefits, they are here to work and until they get their card and settlement they cannot do anything, it is ridiculous.” Mr Alghofari, who lives in the Burmantofts area of Leeds with his wife and three children, added that many protestors have been forced to leave family and friends behind in search for safety. 25-year-old Kamil, who did not wish to give his surname, was forced to leave his wife in Syria in October in hope of gaining asylum

in the UK before sending for her safe arrival. Yet, after five months of waiting, he is yet to hear anything from the Home Office, and says he can never know when something bad is going to happen to his family. “We came over here as asylum seekers and after such a long, dangerous journey we thought our suffering would be over; but it isn’t,” he said. “We respect the rules of the Home Office and understand in some cases it may take up to six months before an interview can be arranged. But, as you see with the situation back in our country being so critical and dangerous, we need help now. “Every day somebody could be killed back home and until we get our settlements, there is nothing we can do. “People elsewhere in the country are getting their interviews yet here in Leeds nobody is getting anything.” Mohammed Fattal, 28, arrived in the UK in October with his brother, and was sent to live in Leeds whilst waiting for an interview to be processed, whilst his sibling went to Cardiff.

After one month, his brother was officially processed by the Home Office yet four months later and Mr Fattal is still waiting to hear about his future. Last Saturday marked the grim three-year anniversary of Syria’s civil war. In countries around the world people took part in candlelight vigils for the people of Syria who have suffered and continue to suffer the most unimaginable horrors. In just three years this brutal conflict has claimed 140,000 lives. More than 2.6million people have fled the borders to escape the bloodshed. We are hearing harrowing reports of people starving inside Syria’s sieged cities and snipers targeting children. Polio has returned to the country 14 years after Syria was certified polio-free. The UK is standing by Syrian people in their hour of desperate need. Our total funding for Syria and the region is now £600 million. This is three times the size of our response to any other humanitarian crisis and it reflects the scale of the suffering. We know our support is reaching those who need it most. Every month it is supplying food for over 353,000 people and clean water for over 1.5 million people. We have also funded over 315,000 medical consultations. The people of the UK can

feel proud that as a country we are at the forefront of the international humanitarian effort. I have seen for myself the difference we are making. I was in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley in January and met refugees facing their third winter living in a tent. These people are incredibly stoic and brave about what they have been through but when you speak to them terrible stories of loss and trauma emerge. For parents the biggest worry is what this crisis is doing to their children. Children have been killed, beaten, shot at and abused during this war. Children have lost their homes and their schools, and, in many cases, their relatives. We must not let these children become a generation lost to conflict. That is why from the start of the Syria crisis the UK has prioritised vulnerable children, ensuring not only that they have the basics they need for survival, but also the chance for a better future. Last year, working closely with the charity UNICEF, we helped to launch the No Lost Generation initiative, providing education, protection and trauma counselling for the children that one day we hope

can rebuild Syria. We have already invested £30 million in to this initiative and by working with partner organisations such as Save the Children and Islamic Relief we are getting more help through to those in need every single day. This includes support for a £2 million project by Islamic Relief to secure access to appropriate education for over 3,500 children. In Lebanon, I announced new funding to provide 300,000 packs of textbooks for all children between the ages of 6 and 15 in state schools, both local and refugee. Many of Syria’s neighbouring countries, like Lebanon, are under enormous strain as the number of refugees continues to spiral. The UK is doing everything possible to support them. When you speak to Syrians who have been forced to flee their country the one thing they all say is that they want to go back. They want to rebuild their lives, their homes and their country. We continue to work with the UN and other partners to bring about a political settlement that will end this crisis and we continue to push all sides of the conflict for unhindered and safe humanitarian access. New-look street cleaners

Street cleaning crews have switched on to the benefits of green transport with their newest van. The diminutive all-electric tipper vehicle can now be seen around the city centre. Crews can collect up to five tonnes of rubbish from the city centre in 24 hours, and despite its size, crews can load over 100 bags of waste and litter into the back the of van. In fact, its smaller size is a big advantage – it makes it ideal for accessing narrow alleyways that the usual, larger vehicles can’t. The electric vehicle has no emissions and is more manoeuvrable, so is well suited to being used in pedestrian areas to empty bins.

Don’t get cornered by pay day lenders

Leeds City Council is continuing its fight against the payday loan industry in the city as news that the level of borrowing from payday lenders in the UK has shot up by 80 per cent in the last year. The national debt charity Step Change has just released its latest figures which show that the number of their clients coming for help after taking payday loans was 67,000 in 2013 compared with 36,000 in the previous year. As part of the council’s strategy to tackle this problem, a new website (www.leedsmic.org.uk) is being launched to signpost people across the city to free independent, financial and debt advice and more affordable credit facilities.

Resident of the prior for more than 20 years, Hena Begum, received her Fat Vat earlier this month and although she thought it was a good idea, she added that it may not prove a huge success straight away. “We have used the buckets but to be honest I have not really found it that helpful,” she said. “I don’t get enough waste oil to put in the Fat Vat but I can see how it may be good if a lot of houses were all putting their oil in. “If it stops drain problems then it is of course a good thing so I have been putting in what little I do use.” Waste oil gathered from just one of the collection units, which can hold in excess of 1,000 litres, could go on to provide the power to make 250,000 cups of tea, or power a microwave for 3,000 hours. Duncan Woodhead, Network Protection Technician at Yorkshire Water, was delighted to launch the programme and said he was looking forward to seeing the results. He said: “We've been working closely with local residents and are asking them to do their bit by not tipping their waste cooking fats, oils and greases down the sewer. “A lot of people don’t realise the damage this can do because these liquids solidify when they get down to the sewers and that can cause blockages. We are all now looking forward to experiencing the benefits this new trial will bring.” 110 kilotonnes of used cooking oil is disposed of each year by UK householders, which could power 110,000 homes with carbon neutral electricity.

Kirklees Catering Service has now been awarded a Silver Food for Life Catering Mark for providing school meals and is the only school catering service in Yorkshire to receive this. The award provides parents of children, who take school dinners, with a guarantee that their children are eating meals which are freshly prepared and healthy, made with local and organic ingredients. The Kirklees Catering Service is one of only 10 local authority inhouse catering services nationally to achieve the silver award. This achievement represents a major commitment on the part of Kirklees Council’s Catering team to providing healthy meals using sustainably-sourced, traceable ingredients, at the heart of school catering. The award is held for all 184 schools in their contract, and two extra care settings. It is the only school catering service in Yorkshire to have achieved the Silver award.

An interview with former West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable, Jawaid Akhtar

‘It was my responsibility to help others learn about our culture’

For 32 years, Jawaid Akhtar was proud to call himself a member of the West Yorkshire Police Force yet at the start of 2014, he finally called time on his long-standing career and became ‘just Jawaid’ once again. Involved in some of the biggest cases in West Yorkshire throughout the last four decades, he will perhaps be best remembered for spearheading the investigation into Bradford’s ‘Crossbow Cannibal’, Steven Griffiths. His rise up the ranks eventually saw him obtain the role as West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable upon retirement, after beginning as just another officer in Huddersfield in 1982. One of the very first Asian officers in the force, he helped pioneer the way for an inclusive institution, educating many and breaking down barriers. Despite experiencing a rise in Islamophobia following cases such as 9/11 and the Lee Rigby killing, he never doubted that a career in the police wasn’t for him. Speaking to the Asian Express, he remembered what it was like starting out as an officer and the importance of his family’s support in the early days. “When I started in the police in Halifax in ‘82, I was one of the early few Asian officers to join the force,” he said. “It was a very different organisation to the one now. With so few people from the BME community I guess there was a curiosity really surrounding me. “It wasn’t so much a bad thing, just a lot of people hadn’t experienced an Asian officer before so they just wanted to know what it was all about. “I guess you could compare it to a white person going to a very rural part of India and the local kids come out to see you because they have never seen a white person before. It wasn’t quite as extreme as that but there was certainly intrigue around us. “As one of the first Asian officers, I felt like I had a duty to help educate others and that is something I am very proud to have done from day one to the end – It was my responsibility to help others learn.” He added: “I came from a working-class background. My father worked in the mill, my eldest brother was a bus driver, and the other a mechanic so I wouldn’t say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. “I just had an extraordinary supportive family who wanted me to go into higher education and wanted me to get a good job, which I did through the graduate scheme.” Jawaid joined the Huddersfield branch of the police on the graduate scheme, a fast-track m o t i o n system that allowed

him to rise up the ranks quickly. It was just another thing that made him unique and stand out to others in the force. “It was like a double whammy I guess,” he said. “As an Asian officer I was somewhat unique but to be a graduate at that time as well just added to the whole interest around me.” Despite experiencing occasional racist slurs, Jawaid said he never once thought that the police ‘wasn’t for him’ and said there were always people there for support throughout his career. As he began to rise up the ranks he got more and more responsibility and in one of his last investigations, he was the lead in one of Bradford’s most shocking crimes of recent memory. The ‘Crossbow Cannibal’ case saw Stephen Griffiths murder three sex workers in the city and Jawaid was appointed Gold Commander for the investigation. He said: “I remember sitting there one day with the senior investigating officer for that job who was Sukhbir Singh. “I just sat there and thought, ‘who would have thought 30 years ago, on a case as significant as this, you would have an Asian gold commander and senior investigating officer’. “Back when I was a Detective Sergeant, I went to a scene involving an Asian family and spoke to them in Punjabi. Despite me being the highest ranking officer there, they just assumed I wasn’t as important as the white officers because of the colour of my skin. “So fast forward to the S t e p h e n Griffiths case in 2009 and it shows how far we have come. It is one of the cases I am most proud of working on.” Despite the improved workplace for members of the BME community in the police, Jawaid added that there was still work to be done. “ Th e r e are still so few

officers in the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) ranks that are from a BME background,” he said. “Five or six years ago we were into double figures; I think there is about four left now so the challenge is still there. “I haven’t got the magic wand or answer as to why this is the case and I’d say for anyone who can explain it, there is a degree in it for them. Profile, ambitions, support, all these things contribute. “ Jawaid is succeeded in the force by his son, Moshin, who currently works out of the Huddersfield base. On his final day, the fatherand-son pair patrolled the streets for one last time, and despite his full backing of Moshin, Jawaid admits he still worries as a caring father. “Obviously there was great sense of pride that day and almost nostalgia to be back where it all started on my final day, but this time I was with my son,” he said. “As a parent you still sort of worry and having been in the job, and having seen what happens in terms of some of the criticism people face, being a parent it is only natural to have them worries. “But, to see Moshin continue in the force is fantastic and he will be there for at least 30 years.” For a man from Pakistan, who moved to the UK at the age of 10 speaking no English, to have finished up as deputy chief constable of the fourth largest force in country is something quite remarkable, it is the story of Jawaid Akhtar.

Dewsbury Library, based on Railway Street, has finally been reopened to the public. The library was closed for two weeks for the installation of self-issue and return machines which enable visitors to take out and return books themselves. The work also included the creation of a visitor information area and the completion of some remedial work on walls affected by water ingress earlier in the year. Cllr Shabir Pandor, Kirklees Cabinet member for Libraries, said: “The new self-issue and return machines will benefit library customers who won’t have to queue to take out or return their library books. “The self-service machines will also free up staff to work with the public elsewhere in the library such as offering more support with IT, and the recently-established ‘knit and natter’ group on Thursdays.”

Local residents and businesses are invited to a series of roadshows to help understand the impact on them when the Tour de France comes through the district in July. Cabinet members will be brought up to date with the plans when they meet on 25th March, when the information plans and the total number of road closures needed will be outlined. It is likely that there will be around 170 road closures on July 6, mainly on or directly accessing the actual route. Comprehensive plans will be put in place to ensure that local residents can prepare well in advance, as the road closures will last several hours.

Regeneration for famous landmark

Improvement works began at Knottingley Hill Top earlier this month as part of a £225,000 scheme. The works will create an attractive gateway at Hill Top, enhancing its public realm. It includes the planting of trees, new seating and replacing paving. There will also be new and reduced guardrails to give a more open feel, as well as restoration of some walls and new footways and kerbs. New signage will also be created around the area, including signposts to the Railway Station, Town Hall, the canal walk and the Amphitheatre. Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth, said: “These works will improve the Knottingley Hill Top area for residents, businesses and visitors. It will provide a much improved gateway into Knottingley and should be complete by the summer.”

A delegation of generous fundraisers from a West Yorkshire voluntary organisation travelled more than 200 miles last weekend to deliver vital funding to the floodhit area of Somerset. The Batley-based Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), made the long trip south, as they presented a cheque of £16,000 to the Somerset Community Foundation flood appeal fund. After seeing pictures of the floods through the media, the group began fundraising in mosques throughout Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield, and within a couple of weeks, had already raised more than £10,000. Chairman of IMWS, Mohamed Mulla, explained why the group were so determined to help out and how delighted he was to see interfaith relations. “Although there may not be any connection between the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and Somerset, we have the connection of humanity and that is why we knew we had to help,” he said. “We saw pictures of homes which had been flooded and decided we must do something to help. “It was through working with the Somerset Community Foundation that we actually got involved with the fundraising efforts and the work alongside the Bishop of Taunton.” The group presented the £16,000 cheque to the foundation before being taken on a tour of the

affected areas, starting with the church in Muchelney, which acted as the central hub for the flood relief effort, before moving on to Burrowbridge. The Bishop of Taunton, the Rt Rev Peter Maurice, welcomed the IMWS to the long-marooned Somerset village after meeting them in Thorney. “This is such a wonderful gesture of solidarity from one community to another,” he said. “It's heartening to find that rural communities in distress in Somerset are getting support from Muslim communities in Yorkshire. “We're very grateful to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and to all the individuals who have generously contributed to the collection. We are deeply grateful for their expression of kindness, compassion and care for those affected by the flooding.” The group also met Rita Dobson, a resident in Taunton whose home has been flooded twice already this year, in January and February. Ms Dobson said it was lovely to meet a group who were simply raising funds due to the goodness of their hearts. “It is really nice to meet some people who genuinely care,” she said. “It’s not politically motivated or anything like that, it’s just the generosity of the heart, it does get you quite emotional really. “When you’re living in a quite sad looking house at the moment, just little things like this can make a huge difference. My spirit has been lifted today.” The IMWS have prided themselves on helping disasters both close to home and elsewhere in the world. In 2009, they raised thousands for the Cumbrian flood victims and have also raised much more for the tsunami relief work in 2004.

Safety is a priority

A derelict building in Halifax which could have put people’s safety at risk has been boarded up and made safe by Calderdale Council. The old brewery garage on Maltings Road at Fountain Head Village, Wheatley, has been out of use and deteriorating gradually since the brewery closed in 1996. Last week concerns were raised about the safety of the building, and the Council went to inspect straight away. It was open and unsecured; there was a risk of some of the brickwork collapsing; and there were holes in the floor which created a safety risk. Graffiti on the inside walls showed that the building has been accessed. Rubbish has been dumped outside and has been reported to the Environmental Health team. The Council took immediate action to make the site safe. This included boarding it up, sealing the openings, removing a loose beam and placing a mound across the entrance to prevent access.

Parking charges change Wakefield Council’s key decision makers will discuss how to improve the way parking restrictions are enforced, which will soon become the Council’s responsibility. The Council will take on enforcement powers from the Police when Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) is introduced in April 2015. On 25th March, Cabinet will discuss a new system of fines and changes to the parking permit process. It is proposed to fine motorists £70 for more serious offences and £50 for less serious offences, with discounts of 50 per cent if paid within 14 days. Parking offences will include parking in a permit space without displaying a valid permit, parking in a restricted area outside a school and stopped on a pedestrian crossing and/or crossing area marked by zigzags. Taxi’s tip triumph Permit change success for Leeds’ cabbies

A permit scheme, which meant that more than 500 Hackney Carriage vehicles across the city could not dispose of their waste properly, has been amended to the delight of many residents and councillors. Until now taxis were deemed ‘commercial vehicles’ and therefore subject to restrictions at the eight facilities across Leeds. Drivers were required to obtain a permit from the Council if they wished to use their vehicle to dispose of waste from their own home. However, following a request by Councillor Kamila Maqsood, representative for Gipton and Harehills, Leeds City Council has acknowledged that while taxis are classed as commercial vehicles, they are unlikely to transport commercial waste and so these residents were being unnecessarily restricted by the permit scheme. The policy has been quickly updated and site attendants informed they will no longer require taxis with less than eight seats to produce a permit in order to dispose of household waste. that they were being prevented from disposing of rubbish at the Meanwood Road site, despite using the facility without problems for a number of years. “I’m delighted that the Council has recognized taxi drivers often have no choice but to use their vehicle for personal matters and has acted really quickly to update the scheme and help out local drivers. “The work of my fellow colleague, Cllr Mark Dobson, Executive Member for Environment and Parks, also cannot go unnoticed in helping to rectify this ruling.” Mr Mohammed Shazad is a taxi driver who lives in Cllr Maqsood’s ward and initially brought up the issue after being refused use of the Meanwood Road waste sorting site. He said he was ‘delighted’ to see the rule change, and thanked his councillor for her support. “I was just doing some general DIY at home when I went to drop off some pieces of wood at the waste site and got refused access,” he said. “I brought up the matter with my ward councillor, Kamila Maqsood, who was terrific in the way she handled the situation, keeping us up to date with everything. “I’m now really happy that I can use these sites just like anybody else.”

Heroin warning West Yorkshire Police issue new plea to encourage drug users to seek help

Police have warned of a potentially strong or contaminated batch of a Class A drug after the sudden death of man in Leeds earlier this week. An unnamed 26-year-old male was found dead at an address in Bank Avenue, Morley, at approximately 1.30pm on Sunday 16th March after an ambulance was called to the scene. A post mortem examination proved inconclusive and the results of toxicology tests are awaited to establish the cause of his death. Three men, aged 30, 42 and 58, were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences in connection with the man’s death and were later released on police bail pending further enquiries. Detective Inspector David Roberts, of Leeds District CID, said: “Work to establish the cause of this man's death is ongoing but

it is known that he was a heroin user and had been taking drugs in the time leading up to his death. “It is not yet known if the strength of the heroin taken was a factor or if the heroin had been cut with something unusual, but the police and public health officials feel it is appropriate to advise drugs users that if they feel unwell or get an unusual reaction to something they have taken, they should seek medical advice immediately. “Leeds has a number of drug treatment services available to assist and support people who want to stop taking drugs and we would encourage people to access those services to avoid the health risks associated with drug use.” Leeds Harm Reduction Service for people wanting to seek advice or access treatment for substance misuse can be contacted on 0113 242 1161.

Pottery showcase

Superb handmade pottery produced by a group of adult learners with physical disabilities has been showcased at a historic house in Leeds this week. This follows a previous visit to Temple Newsam House made by the Osmondthorpe Resource Centre group as part of a workshop focusing on ‘The Leeds Pottery’, which is one of the largest collections of Creamware in the country. So inspired were the participants by what was on offer, they made a request to create their own pottery at the Osmondthorpe Resource Centre, guided by their YMCA tutor. After viewing the quality of their work, assistant community curator at Temple Newsam House Helen Pratt, was so impressed that she requested the collection be put on display to the public. Following its launch at Temple Newsam House, the display will subsequently be showcased at Leeds Discovery Centre from 1st April.

New £1 coin by 2017 Treasury says the two metal piece will be harder to fake

The Treasury announced Wednesday it was ditching the £1 coin used in Britain for the past three decades and replacing it with a 12-sided piece that will be harder to fake. The Treasury says the new coin, made of two metals in two different colours and modelled on the old Threepenny bit, will be ‘the most secure coin in circulation in the world’. About three per cent (45 million) of all £1 coins, are currently forgeries and in some parts of Britain this rises to six per cent, according to the Royal Mint. The new coin will have the same

shape of the old ‘Threepenny bit’ that was introduced in 1937 and went out with decimalisation in 1971. It was popular during World War II when households and businesses had to abide by a blackout to thwart enemy bombings, because its distinctive size and shape made it easy to recognise in the dark. The new £1 will be made using cutting-edge technology that allows it to be easily authenticated. Combined with the use of two metals and the 12 sides, the Royal Mint hopes it will be hard to

counterfeit. Finance Minister George Osborne said: "After 30 years of loyal service, the time is right to retire the current £1 coin and replace it with the most secure coin in the world. “With advances in technology making high value coins like the £1 ever more vulnerable to counterfeiters, it's vital that we

keep several paces ahead of the criminals to maintain the integrity of our currency.” The new coin is expected to be in circulation by 2017, following a consultation with businesses. As with all British coins, the 'heads' side will feature the image of Queen Elizabeth II and there will be a public competition to decide the 'tails' side.

Leeds City Council, working with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) and other partners across the city, targeted over 70 flats above shops on Harehills Lane as part of a scheme tackling rogue landlords. The multi-agency operation was targetting fire safety, environmental health and standards of accommodation, as well as offering residents and landlords advice and support to ensure accommodation and safety were highlighted. All shop and flat owners have been written to and the council is currently engaging with over 40 owners who have taken up the invitation to work with the council and its partners. Advice is being given to these owners to ensure their flats comply with legal requirements and where appropriate their businesses below comply with relevant food and health legislation.

Squash partnership serves up huge revamp Squash courts at four Leeds leisure centres are getting a major facelift worth more than £83,000. The refurbishment project will see work carried out to revamp the facilities at Kirkstall, Scott Hall, Aireborough and Fearnville leisure centres. The scheme is being funded through a partnership between Leeds City Council and England Squash and Racketball, who have provided a grant of £55,000 of Sport England cash towards the work. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: “It’s great news that the squash courts at Kirkstall along with Scott Hall, Aireborough and Fearnville will be getting such an impressive revamp.”

History uncovered at City Hall

Council builders working at Bradford’s City Hall have unearthed a World War II sign directing people to the location of an air raid shelter in the building’s basement. This amazing find was unexpectedly discovered when worker removed a built-in cupboard as part of work to convert the former police rooms into a registrar’s office and wedding venue. It is believed the sign was covered up sometime during the 1950’s when the rooms were used by the city’s police force. It is one of a number of signs that would have directed workers and members of the public to the shelter in the basement during raids carried out by the Luftwaffe in the 1940’s.

Wakefield Council’s Cabinet is to discuss plans to relocate High Well School to Rookhill Road, Pontefract. Plans to move High Well School to the former Chequerfield Infant School site are to be discussed by decision makers at a Wakefield Council Cabinet Meeting on 25th March. The report highlights that the site at Rookhill Road, specifically the layout and size of the school, will help the school to improve teaching and learning and better meet the needs of pupils. Following a six week period of consultation, this report recommends relocating to the Chequerfield Infant School site. A Chinese student, studying at the University of Hull Business School, is reported to be among the 239 missing passengers who were on board the Malaysia Airline flight MH370, when it went missing. 26-year-old, Yue Wenchao, moved to the UK, from inner-Mongolia, to study at the East Yorkshire University on a postgraduate degree in September 2012, having graduated from the North China Electric Power University in the same year. He is strongly believed to be one of the missing 153 Chinese nationals on board the missing plane, when he was flying from Kuala Lumpur to visit his girlfriend. In one of his final posts on microblogging site, Weibo, on the 7th March, he wrote next to a photo of her: “See u in Beijing!” A University of Hull spokesperson said earlier this week they could not confirm whether the reports were true but did reveal it had a student fitting the name and nationality. Jeannette Strachan, University of Hull Registrar and Secretary, said: “We are deeply concerned to hear that Yue

Wenchao, a student in the final stages of his MSc degree with Hull University Business School, may be among the passengers on board the missing Malaysia Airlines’ flight. “Although we are not able to confirm these reports at this time, our thoughts are with the friends and relatives of all those affected.” A massive search operation has been underway since the disappearance of the Boeing 777 in the early hours of the 8th March. The plane was heading to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur when its route was diverted less than one hour into the journey. A number of theories have been put forward in regard to the mysterious disappearance, yet background checks of all the Chinese nationals on board currently show no direct link to terrorism. Satellite data shows it might have ended up somewhere in a giant arc stretching from Central Asia to the southern reaches of the Indian Ocean. Malaysian police say they are investigating the possibility of hijacking, sabotage, terrorism or issues related to the mental health of the pilots or anyone else on board, but have yet to give any update on what they have uncovered.

richest UK families have more than 12 million poorest Brits The five richest families in the UK are wealthier than the bottom 20 per cent of the entire population and the gap between the rich and the rest has grown significantly over the last two decades, according to new figures. The alarming statistics show that just five wealthy UK households have more money than the poorest 12.6 million Britons – almost the same number of people as those living in households below the UK poverty line. Oxfam, who conducted the research, also say that over the past two decades the wealthiest 0.1 percent have seen their income grow nearly four times faster than the least well off 90 percent of the population. In real terms, that means a wealthy elite have seen their income grow by £24,000 a year, enough to buy a small yacht or a sports car, whilst the bottom 90 percent of Britons’ incomes have gone up by only a few pounds a week. The average UK salary is £26,500-a-year. Ben Phillips, Oxfam’s Director of Campaigns and Policy, said: “Britain is becoming a deeply divided nation, with a wealthy elite who are seeing their incomes spiral up, whilst millions of families are struggling to make ends meet. “It’s deeply worrying that these

extreme levels of wealth inequality exist in Britain today, where just a handful of people have more money than millions struggling to survive on the breadline.” Growing numbers of Britons are turning to charity-run foodbanks, yet at the same time the highest earners in the UK have had the biggest tax cuts of any country in the world.

Ben Phillips said: “While many rich people use a portion of their wealth to support individual good causes, this should not be used as an excuse for governments failing to tackle the problem of growing inequality.”

A decade of protection A special celebratory event was held last week in South Yorkshire as Sheffield’s residents came together to acknowledge the city’s efforts of protecting some of the world’s most vulnerable refugees. Sheffield was the first city in the UK to offer safe haven to refugees, resettled under the United Nation’s Gateway Protection Programme, with the first group arriving from Liberia on 19th March 2004. The city has since offered places to people fleeing states well known for conflict or poor human rights records, including Somalia, Myanmar, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo and will be mark the decade with a special event. A self-entitled ‘proud Bradfordian’ is just one of 10 finalists in this year’s Mrs UK World - a competition which brings together inspirational married women from across the country. 36-year-old, Kul Sarai, will be representing her hometown of Bradford after she was told she had made the final cut on Valentine’s Day. An actress by trade, the mother of two said she was delighted to hear she had made the final, and explained how she got involved in the competition. “I’m on a website called ‘StarNow’, and saw the contest advertised on there,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if it was something I wanted to do initially but thought I’d drop them a line and they got back to me saying ‘we’ve seen your portfolio, brief and bio we think you’d be suitable’. “My husband then nominated me along with two

of my lovely friends and it just all went from there really.” Unlike other beauty pageants, Mrs UK World requires all entrants to be married women, and not only have a ‘ring on their finger’ but also prove that they have not sacrificed their marriages for success elsewhere.

For more than 30 years, a Rotherham resident has worked tirelessly with the local public all in hope of creating a cohesive community and her efforts have now been royally recognised. Zanib Rasool received her MBE for services to the community earlier this week from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, at Buckingham Palace after being named on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. From breaking down ethnic and cultural barriers in football, to supporting victims of domestic violence, Miss Rasool has been involved in tens of projects during her time in South Yorkshire. Speaking to the Asian Express, she expressed her delight at receiving the award and said it did come as a surprise. “I was absolutely delighted to receive the news, not just for myself but for everyone I work with,” she said. “People in the Rotherham

community work so hard to develop the lives of people in our local area and a lot of Asian women who I have worked with in particular deserve a lot of credit. “It did come as a surprise when I received the news and it was great especially for my nieces as I can see it helping to inspire them, and others like them, to put back into the community.” In the early 1980’s, Miss Rasool was a key player in the establishment of the United MultiCultural Centre, the first community organisation in Rotherham dedicated to supporting Asian women. Working in her local area of Masbrough and Ferham, she has also helped develop and sustain a number of projects whilst acting as Chair of the Ferham Children Centre and serving as a Magistrate in Rotherham. Since 2005 she has also been Trustee of Apna Haq (BME domestic violence project) and a

Leeds pupils gather at Elland Road for world’s biggest maths lesson By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Over 7,000 pupils from more than 130 schools across Leeds gathered at Elland Road last weekend as the city’s young mathematicians attempted to smash a world record.

Led by world-renowned television personality and maths maestro, Johnny Ball, the pupils were involved in a spectacular day of interactive learning. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing were just some of the tasks children were set on the day whilst competitions and prizes brought the competitive edge. The lesson was open to all schoolchildren in Yorkshire between the ages of nine and 13 in Key Stage Two and Three, and was held during national science week. Representatives from the Guinness Book of Records were also

present on the day to tally up the attendance and find out if it was in fact a world record. United forward, Matt Smith, may be more known for using his head to score goals than for quick calculations, yet he was on stage alongside centre-back Tom Lees, to help carry out the day’s activities. Leeds United’s Managing Director, David Haigh, was also on hand to present two lucky winners with a signed shirt and a signed ball. Organisers said the maths lessons were a fantastic opportunity for all young people across Yorkshire, regardless of ability, and educational packs, which were provided to teachers, ensured all who were in attendance joined in.

FUNDRAISERS: Members of AMYA collected tens of thousands of pounds by selling poppies up and down the country

A Muslim youth charity which helped to raise thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal was commended by the Royal British Legion in their Annual Awards Ceremony last week. Hartlepool and Newcastle chapters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) won “Commendation” awards for their efforts at the Gateshead event. Young Muslims, from the two northern areas, had joined their AMYA counterparts around the country and helped collectively raised more than £50,000 for the Poppy Appeal. The awards to AMYA Hartlepool and Newcastle chapters were presented by the deputy Lieutenant of County Durham, Miss Miriam Harte and The Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Mr Nigel Sherlock OBE respectively. Speaking on the occasion, National representative of AMYA, Mr Wadood Daud, thanked the Royal British Legion for their support and commended the groups’ efforts in raising such a ‘great total’. “Our spiritual leader and the world-wide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, has always reminded us that service to mankind, is both our religious and social responsibility,” he said. “We hope that all of us coming together to help those who have served this great country sends a positive sign of peace and harmony. “The founder of our community has written the following: ‘My desire, my wish and my objective is serving humanity. A leading arts charity will be launching two innovative projects later this month to celebrate the importance of women in arts. The South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk) will be launching the Women in Arts programme in Leeds on the 29th and 30th March with a pair of unique performances. In the classical world of Indian music, dance and arts it is typically men who are celebrated and rewarded for their musical talents. For the first time ever, SAA-uk is providing women musicians with a series of concerts throughout the year, in recognition and celebration of their musical achievements. Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, (Keran) Chief Executive of SAA-uk explained what the project was all about. “For years women have played an integral role in the arts and we are

delighted to highlight the artistic passion and ability they have by dedicating a whole series of events and concerts to them,” she said. “The arts are an amazing vehicle, which transcends cultural boundaries and allows freedom of expression and we have some very talented female performers whose artistic excellence deserves recognition.” SAA-uk’s celebration of Women in Arts will begin at the end of March with two very different productions. More than 1,700 runners, joggers and walkers turned up to tackle this year’s Epilepsy Action 10K in Bradford last weekend, making it the biggest run in the history of the annual race. On Sunday morning, contestants battled windy conditions to cross the finish line, raising money for the Yeadonbased charity which helps more than 600,000 people nationwide who suffer from epilepsy. A huge £250,000 has been raised over the six years that the race has been held, with it continuing to grow in size year-onyear. Setting off from Centenary Square, runners followed the route through to Frizinghall and back, with last year’s winner, Tesfaye Debele, taking the crown once again with an amazing time of 31minutes, 42 seconds – more than 90 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. In first place for the women was Danielle Hodgkinson, who completed the route in a very credible 35 minutes, 32 seconds. Not everybody was running the course at a competitive level, with many helping raise money for a worthy charity, and improve their own fitness levels at the same time. Team NADA, made up of ten representatives from the Naqshbandia Active Development Association in Bradford, were fundraising for the ‘Bahn Kurma Orphanage’ in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, with 100 per cent of funds raised going towards the orphanage. Race entry fees will still go to Epilepsy Action. Hoping to raise more than £4,000, members of the team will visit the South Asian country later

and limped my way to the finish line,” he said. “There was fantastic support from the spectator’s en route who were like the 12th man to coin a football phrase.” 18-year-old Ishtiaq Saleem, a student at Dixons Allerton Academy, was also fundraising for a separate cause, the Journey of a Lifetime Trust (JOLT).

Every two years, JOLT organises expeditions all over the world for groups of young people, between 14 and 21-years-old, with significant disadvantages. Ishtiaq raised in excess of £300 for the cause.

Highway to health From Bradford to Leeds on two wheels

Step aside HS2, there is another new route planned which could not only give Yorkshire’s residents easier access to two major cities but also improve health and fitness at the same time. A Bradford to Leeds CityConnect ‘cycle super-highway’ could soon be arriving in West Yorkshire as a £29million scheme is proposed to link the two cities. Aimed at reducing congestion on the roads, as well as promoting the healthy lifestyle, the route would be an alternative option for motorists fed up of the rush hour traffic. Metro Chairman, and Councillor for Kippax and Methley, James Lewis, explained what he hoped the route would achieve. He said: “By combining dedicated cycle paths, an upgrade to the canal tow path and 20mph zones feeding into the main route, CityConnect will provide people with a safe environment for cycling and walking. “CityConnect will transform cycling between and within our cities and by providing people with more safe and attractive travel options, will help to reduce congestion on our roads with the subsequent economic benefit that brings.”

Consultation has now begun on the Bradford section of the cycle superhighway route which would cover the city centre and Thornbury, including Gain Lane and Dick Lane. The public’s opinion on the matter has not been overlooked by the councillors, with a number of sessions held in Bradford to discuss ideas and proposals. Choirs from York and its twin city Münster will sing from the same hymn sheet at St Helen’s Church during a musical evening. Murder suspect finally appears in court

Court proceedings begin A Bradford father and husband, accused of murdering his wife last year, finally appeared in the dock last week at the city’s Crown Court, months after the alleged crime took place. 22-year-old Danish Irfan, of Alford Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford, appeared in the dock accused of killing his partner, Ridda Zanab, at their home address. Irfan had gone to Pakistan following the death of his wife, yet upon return to the UK last month, was arrested as he stepped off the plane. He was taken to Bradford for questioning by West Yorkshire Police before later being charged with the murder. The body of Ridda Zanab, the mother of Irfan’s baby daughter, was found in the early hours of the morning of 3rd November last year, in the upstairs bedroom. Irfan did not enter a plea to the charge when court proceedings started on Friday 14th March, and the Recorder of Bradford, Judge

Roger Thomas QC, has now set a trial date for 21st July. The defendant only spoke when confirming his name and had an interpreter beside him to translate the proceedings. Irfan’s counsel, Yunus Valli, told the court that a psychiatrist would be seeing his client and that ‘all avenues need to be investigated’ in regard to the killing of Mrs Zanab. Judge Thomas remanded Irfan in custody until his next court appearance on the 2nd May whilst the July trial has been scheduled to last five days. Irfan and his wife were married in 2012. Their six-month-old daughter is being cared for by relatives.

ust 12 months on from the official opening of Leeds’ £350m shopping and leisure centre, Trinity Leeds is celebrating as millions have flocked to see what all the fuss is about. More than 120 stores have opened, and with more yet to come, the centre has established itself as an economic hub in the city centre, with sceptics left red-face thanks to a first year boom. Home to some of the country’s biggest retail names, including Debenhams, M&S, Hollister and Armani Exchange to name but a few, Trinity Leeds was the only large retail destination opened throughout the UK in 2013.

Trinity Leeds celebrates first year in city centre 2,270 new jobs have also been created over the last year, whilst Albion Street has become the second busiest street in the city, just behind Briggate, as 22million shoppers ventured down to the shopping hotspot. A recent study by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) also highlighted a rise in shopping outlets opening across the city, mainly thanks to the new Trinity development, with a net total of 55 more stores in operation now than last year.

The opening of Trinity Leeds has played a part in this and has been a huge success for the city, boosting consumer confidence and spending. “2013 saw a continuation of the high street metamorphosis

driven by consumers changing behaviour as they adopt the newer digital channels and technologies available to them. “Casualties have been in those areas where we have seen a rapid shift online - travel, fashion, digital photography and DVDs, and banks. Those trends will continue.” Trinity Leeds shopping centre is owned by Land Securities, and their portfolio Director, Gerald Jennings, spoke of how the centre still has potential to grow.

Ms Palmer left the employ of 4myschools to join a rival, Sugarman Education. 4myschools suspected that Ms Palmer was acting in breach of her employment covenants and they applied to the Court to enforce those covenants as well as seeking damages against Ms Palmer for breach of covenants. 4myschools argued that the legitimate interest that the restrictions protected was its trade connections with its clients and candidates. Therefore, she contended, there was no legitimate business interest capable of protection and her non-solicitation and non-dealing covenants were unenforceable. The Court disagreed and found that, although there was little loyalty by either the schools or the teachers to any particular recruitment consultant or agency, the relationship which Ms Palmer would have built up with a school was a fundamental part of her job role. The Court found that it was a key part of the consultant’s role to build relationships with the clients and candidates and that a good relationship could be important when it came to choosing between different consultants or agencies. The Court was therefore satisfied that 4myschools had a legitimate interest in relation to the connections which Ms Palmer had made while being employed by them and it was entitled to protect that interest. The Court also found that although much of the information was publicly available, the employee would have knowledge of certain key information which was not available to the public, such as information about personalities concerned, their likes/dislikes and special requirements. These factors justified the employer’s need for protection. This decision is helpful to employers as it shows that in certain circumstances there can still be legitimate business interests to protect, even where most of the information can be found online and in the public domain and there is relatively little loyalty from clients and customers. Does it pertain to our BMI (body mass index)? Does it mean how much we exercise? Or does it mean whether we smoke or not? Being ‘healthy’ is in fact, a combination of all these things, and more. The food we consume plays a big role in determining whether we remain healthy or not. South Asian food is notorious for having high salt, oil, fat and sugar contents. It is no secret that those ladoos, samoseh and pakoreh do us no favours on the waist line; but many are

oblivious to the fact that what we South Asians view as ‘standard cuisine’ is in fact doing us detrimental damage on the inside. Having a South Asian background automatically puts us immediately at risk of having certain health conditions due to our genetic make-up. According to the NHS, people from South Asian communities are up to six times more likely to have diabetes than the general population – doubling the risk of a stroke. South Asians are three to five times more likely to suffer from end stage renal failure and the risk of dying prematurely from coronary heart disease is twice as high among South Asian

groups in comparison to the general British population. Though it is not one hundred percent clear why this is, one of the factors that can significantly reduce these alarming statistics is our diet. Be in control of your health by making a few simple changes.

A single tablespoon (yes, just one) of ghee contains approximately 115 calories, 12.73g of fat (Guideline daily amount [GDA) for women is 70g, for men it is 95g) and 7.9g of saturated fat (GDA for women is 20g and for men 30g) – all this in just one tablespoon! Ghee has a distinct taste– but to keep calories and fat intake down, you can easily substitute it with vegetable, rapseed or olive oil. Sugar: We South Asians do not take a box of Quality Street over when there is a cause for celebration – we take mithai – and lots of it. Whether it is barfi, jalebis, ladoos, gulabja muns or any other colourful delight, the sugar count in these treats is astronomical. A single ladoo for example, contains approximately 246 calories and 134 of these calories come from fat and sugar. The amount of sugar we put in our warm cup of chai is also a cause for concern, we often forget that the 1, 2, 3, - or dare I say it - 4, teaspoons of sugar in our tea contribute to our daily sugar intake. Whilst the odd sweet treat now and again is absolutely fine our levels of sugar need to be monitored as we are already at a higher risk of diabetes than our non-Asian

friends. There are plenty of healthier alternatives; why not opt for frozen yoghurt instead of an ice-cream or nuts rather than a chocolate? Perhaps you could even swap one of your daily cups of tea for herbal tea to improve complexion, digestion and energy levels! Salt: This is the big one. Too much salt raises blood pressure which can then lead to a heart attack or stroke. According to World Action on Salt, for most of the UK population 75% of salt comes from processed foods; for South Asians, “almost all of the salt consumed is added during cooking or at the table. In fact, more than 90% of South Asian people add salt to their cooking and 40% ‘generally’ add salt to their food at the table”. To reduce salt intake, cut down on snacks with high levels of the white stuff (crisps, Bombay mix, salted nuts), check the labels on your food – food with less than 0.3grams of salt per 100grams is low in salt, butter and ghee are high in salt – use alternatives or unsalted versions...but the best solution: gradually add less salt in your cooking! If done slowly, your taste buds will naturally adjust and you won’t even taste the difference. Make a few changes to your diet and your body will reap the rewards – inside and out! Jasvir Ram Ginday is alleged to have told a neighbour he had set fire to ‘general rubbish’ after killing Varkha Rani at their home in Walsall, West Midlands. Opening the case against Ginday, who denies murder but has admitted manslaughter, prosecutor Deborah Gould alleged that the 29year-old had tried to destroy his wife's body. Jurors, who were warned that they may find aspects of the case distressing, heard that Ginday was arrested in September last year after police discovered the unrecognisable remains of his wife at their home in Walsall. A bank worker, who married to conceal his homosexuality, strangled his wife a few months later with a metal vacuum pipe, a court heard on Wednesday. The defendant had travelled with his mother to India to find a bride and met several women before a match-maker known to both families introduced him to Miss Rani. He went through with arranged marriage to please his parents and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in India last March. Prosecutor Debbie Gould told a jury the couple became engaged ‘at the end of a meeting which lasted several hours’, with Miss Rani’s family believing Ginday to be ‘a perfect match for their intelligent, well-educated, and attractive young daughter’. Rani, 24, married her eventual killer in India in March last year and moved to the UK to live with him in August after being granted a visa. Claiming that Ginday had told a friend he was attracted to men in his university study group as early as 2008, Gould told jurors at Wolverhampton Crown Court: "Despite his sexual orientation, in October 2012 the defendant and his mother travelled to India to find him a wife. “While he was there the defendant met and rejected several women before meeting Varkha Rani. “No doubt to Varkha's family the defendant appeared to be a perfect match for their intelligent, welleducated, and attractive young daughter.” After her arrival in the UK on 10th August, Varkha was ‘in all senses a stranger in a strange land’ and appeared to be isolated, friendless and alone. Meanwhile, Gould told the court, the defendant was ‘staring reality in the face’ and would have had to explain any attempt to divorce his new bride. Economic divide widens

The Hinduja brothers have emerged as the third richest family in Britain as part of an analysis of the divide between the rich and poor in the UK. According to research published by the charity Oxfam on Monday, the latest rich list from 'Forbes' magazine showed that London-based Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja have a combined wealth of $10 billion. The five top UK entries analysed for its 'A Tale of Two Britains' report found the family of the Duke of Westminster as the richest followed by David and Simon Reuben, the Hndujas, the Cadogan family, and Sports Direct retail boss Mike Ashley who between them had property, savings and other assets worth £28.2 billion. It implies that the country's five richest families now own more wealth than the poorest 20 per cent of the population, with their wealth totalling £28.1 billion – an average of £2,230 each.

Manslaughter charges

Three former officers of security firm G4S will face manslaughter charges over the 2010 death of a man who died as he was being deported from Britain by the group, government prosecutors said on Thursday. The prosecutor's office, which had previously ruled out any action in relation to the case, said it had decided not to charge the company itself, the world's largest security firm, for corporate manslaughter. However Colin Kaler, Terrence Hughes and Stuart Tribelnig will be charged after the office reviewed new evidence from an inquest which found that Jimmy Mubenga had been unlawfully killed when he was restrained by the officers.

Class A drugs hid in ‘Baby powder’ £50,000 worth of drugs seized in raids Class A drugs with a street value up to £50,000 have been taken off the streets of Leeds following a series of early morning raids by West Yorkshire Police. Officers from Operation Viper and the Leeds District Burglary Team joined forces to target 13 addresses across the North West area of the city in raids that took place across Thursday and Friday of last week. Five people were arrested during the course of the operation on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, with more than half a kilo of suspected Class A heroin

found in a flat within the Gamble Hill Croft complex in Bramley. Within the property, officers working with a specialised drugs dog, found the class A substance behind a panel in the bathroom whilst smaller amounts were also found within a tin of baby powder. A 49-year-old man was arrested from the property on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and has since been released on police bail. Two other men, aged 24 and 23, were also arrested on Thursday morning from separate addresses in Pudsey and have been released on bail. In a raid on Friday morning, 7th March, officers seized a Bentley Continental car from outside a property on Ireland Crescent. The vehicle has been recovered for forensic examination to determine if any offences have been committed in relation to its use or possession. A 33-year-old man was arrested from the same address with a 24year-old male arrested from a property at Holtdale Place in Holt Park. Both men have since been released on police bail. The raids, which were carried out under the Misuse of Drugs Act, formed part of West Yorkshire Police's Operation Viper, which aims to target the county's most prolific criminals and drive down crime.

In a damning report, the Home Affairs Select Committee said the Government's decision not to obtain official estimates played into the hands of those who ‘wish to inflame tensions about immigration for political gain’. Restrictions to the labour market were lifted for Romanians and Bulgarians on 1st January, prompting warnings of a looming surge of immigration from the eastern European countries. But the Committee said the numbers of migrants from the two countries were ‘more a trickle than a flood’.

Autistic man attacked by officers for looking ‘suspicious’ An autistic man’s family have called for two police officers to be sacked after they brutally assaulted their relative on the basis that he looked ‘suspicious’. 33-year-old Faruk Ali, from Luton, was helping the bin men collect the rubbish from his home, a task he enjoys doing, when two uniformed officers attacked him. The helpless victim, who has suffered from autism and learning difficulties since childhood, was allegedly thrown into the bins before being pinned down, kicked and punched, as he tried to struggle his way back into his home. Bedfordshire Police Chief Constable Colette Paul wrote to residents to announce the officers had been suspended from all police duties whilst an investigation is launched. She added: “If at the end of the investigation wrong doing is identified I will deal with it. No inference of wrongdoing can be drawn until the conclusion of this independent inquiry. “I will continue to keep you all updated as this investigation progresses.” However, Mr Faruk’s younger brother, Dhobir, said there was no other option but to sack the officers involved. He explained how they would have been able to see Mr Ali’s badge, alerting others that he suffered from autism, long before

the attack. Dhobir said: “The family has been traumatised by the whole experience. Faruq hasn't actually recovered yet, he's still traumatised. “He is scared to leave the house, he has become more anxious and agitated and he is terrified every time he sees the police. “When he came in the house with the police behind him I saw the bruises and cuts and straight away knew what had happened to him. “Why did the police use such force? They said he looked suspicious but he was wearing slippers at the time and he was wearing a big coat. “The fact of the matter is my brother is not the only one who suffers from autism in Luton and we want to make sure this doesn't happen again.” An official apology was released from the Bedfordshire Police, saying: “Bedfordshire Police is sorry for the distress Mr Ali and his family feel regarding the actions officers took due to their concerns for Mr Ali's wellbeing on February 20 in Whitby Road, Luton.” The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will work alongside Leicestershire Police, as they investigate the incident in a ‘transparent’ and ‘open’ manner.

‘Flood Hero’ A teenager from Southfields has been labelled a ‘hero’ and given a £5,000 prize live on television after his work with the flood relief efforts in the UK. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad was presented with the ‘Flood Hero’ award, alongside four other people, on ITV’s Daybreak earlier this week before being given a cash prize, by Sir Richard Branson, to go towards his chosen charity. During the most recent half term holidays in February, Zafar made the most of his free time and volunteered with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association's (AMYA) flood relief campaign, joining hundreds of volunteers in assisting families affected by the floods around the country. The young volunteer spent almost every day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Jamal Akbar, one of the AMYA Regional coordinators

Thailand's Constitutional Court was due to rule on Friday on the validity of a general election held in February that was disrupted by protesters, with speculation growing it could void the vote, adding to the political turmoil in the country. The protests are the latest chapter in an eightyear crisis that pits Bangkok's middle class and royalist establishment against supporters of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother, ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled by the army

in 2006 and lives in exile to avoid a jail term for graft. Now in their fifth month, the protesters have shut government offices and at times blocked major thoroughfares in Bangkok to try to force Yingluck out. Twenty-three people have died and hundreds have been injured in the violence. The court complaint was brought by a law lecturer who argues among other things that the 2nd February election was unconstitutional because voting did not take place in all areas on the same day.

A woman gave birth to a 7.7 pounds baby girl with two heads in northern India last week. The conjoined twins born at JK Hindu Hospital on 13th March, share everything below their two separate heads. The mother Urmila Sharma, 28, says that they couldn’t afford an ultrasound and had no idea she was carrying

conjoined twins. “We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then,” said Dr Shikha Malik, who delivered the baby. The twins have ‘two heads, two necks and two spines,’ but just one body and their chances for survival are slim. “She is presently alive and healthy,” said Dr. Ashish Sehgal, CEO of the Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana.

Sehgal also added that a “meticulous and challenging” surgery could be the key to saving the twins' life, but the procedure can't take place until they are in stable condition. The twins are currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Press has reported that the couple and their families are ‘very distressed.’ Some conjoined twins can be separated, depending on shared organs and where they’re connected, but most are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

UK supermarket giant Tesco has this week announced that it will open up a chain of grocery stores in India after they agreed a partnership deal with the multicorporation, Tata Group. It is the first time in the company’s history that it will enter India’s vast retail and supermarket sector since the country allowed such foreign investment in 2012. Tesco said Friday it would invest £85million to take a 50 percent

share of Tata-owned Trent Hypermarket Ltd, which operates the Star Bazaar chain. It said the chain would operation 12 stores in southern and western India selling food and groceries, home and personal products, plus fashion and accessories. Other major international multi-brand retailers, most prominently Wal-Mart, have stayed out of India because of strict localsourcing rules they say make doing business too difficult.

Gunmen fired shots inside a luxury hotel on Thursday in the centre of the Afghan capital Kabul, police said, but the scale of the attack and the number of casualties was unclear. Security sources told Reuters that two or three gunmen armed with pistols entered the Serena hotel by a back door. Two people had been wounded, they said. There were no details on the nationality of those hurt.

One person who was taken to safety along with other guests said that the shooting appeared to begin in the hotel restaurant. Another guest, hiding in his room, said he could hear sporadic gunfire. Police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanekzai confirmed that shots had been fired, but said it was unclear if it was an attack by insurgents. He did not speculate on other possible attackers.

Syrians continue mass exodus

For the first time, Syrians were the biggest group seeking asylum in industrialised countries last year, as the impact of fighting in the country spread beyond the turbulent region, the United Nations refugee agency said on Friday. A record number of asylum requests by Syrians and Russians in 2013 raised the total number received in 44 rich

countries to it highest since 2001, the agency said. The total of 612,700 claims rose 28 percent from the year before. Syrian refugees are expected to continue fleeing the country's civil war, now in its fourth year. Some 2.6 million have now been driven into five neighbouring countries, one million in Lebanon alone, the agency said.

Bin Laden’s son-in-law gives surprise testimony in US trial In a trial which could see Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law jailed for the rest of his life, Suleiman Abu Ghaith has surprisingly stepped forward in the third week of his trial to testify his innocence. It is reported that just hours after the 9/11 attacks in September 2001, the Kuwaiti teacher and imam met bin Laden inside a cave in Afghanistan. “We are the ones who did it,” is what Abu Ghaith claims bin Laden told him, before asking him to use his powers of oratory to send a videotaped ‘message to the world’. The video, and others like it, form the basis for the U.S. government's case against Abu Ghaith, who would later marry one of bin Laden's daughters. Prosecutors say Abu Ghaith, 48, functioned as a spokesman and recruiter for bin Laden's Islamic militant group al Qaeda and knew of plans to attack the United States in the future. Abu Ghaith told New York federal court jurors, however, that he simply followed talking points given to him by bin Laden and never intended to promote the group's agenda. He denied participating in any plots against Americans. “Did you ever join al Qaeda?” his lawyer, Stanley Cohen, asked him. “No,” said Abu Ghaith, the highest-profile bin Laden advisor to face charges in a U.S. civilian court. His testimony, which had not been expected, came during the third week of the trial, which will conclude on Monday with closing arguments.

Rat poison used in toxic child attack

Authorities say two children have died and another 30 are sickened in a mass poisoning at a kindergarten in southwestern China. Investigators identified the toxic substance as a powerful rat poison, but do not yet know how it was administered Wednesday in the kindergarten in Yunnan province's rural Qiubei county. State broadcaster CCTV says the school began accepting students last year despite

not being fully licensed. Along with the victims, aged four and five, 12 others remained hospitalized Friday, three of them in serious condition. Chinese schools have suffered a series of mass stabbings and other attacks by mentally disturbed people or those bearing grudges. There have also been incidents of school staff administering medication without authorization.

A rocket on the runway

Two rockets struck a runway at the international airport in Libya's capital Tripoli on Friday, forcing the suspension of flights, an airport source said. “Two rockets exploded on the main runway of the airport, causing damage. For security reasons, flights were suspended until further notice,” the source said on condition of anonymity. The blasts took place at around 5am (3am GMT), at a time when the day's inbound and outbound traffic had yet to begin. An airline representative in the capital told news

sources that the authorities had informed firms operating at the airport that flights would remain suspended until 1030 GMT on Saturday. Since long-time dictator Moamer Kadhafi was deposed in 2011 and killed by rebels in October that year, the international airport has been under the control of former insurgents from Zintan, 170 kilometres (105 miles) southwest of Tripoli. It is at Zintan that Kadhafi's son, and onetime presumed heir, Seif al-Islam, is being held by ex-rebels.

A British woman has been handed a life imprisonment by a court in Pakistan for attempting to smuggle 63kg of heroin out of the country. 26-year-old Khadija Shah, from Birmingham, was arrested in May 2012 after the drugs were found in her luggage when she was about to board a plane from Islamabad airport. Pregnant at the time, Shah, who also has two other children, aged four and five, will remain in the country’s prison with her youngest child, Malaika, who was born whilst she was in custody. Malaika, now 16-monthsold, will continue to grow up in the prison as she has done for all her life and her mother said if it wasn’t for her, she would have gone crazy. Speaking to Vice, she said: “If Malaika was not here, I would be crazy because things

her knowledge, and yet is facing life in a Pakistani prison. “The UK government must ensure that Khadija gets the urgent assistance she needs to appeal her sentence so that her baby doesn't grow up behind bars.” The mother and daughter are currently being held in Adiala jail, in Rawalpindi, where some of Pakistan’s most notorious terrorists are based.

Having had condolences pouring in from the Bollywood film fraternity, it seems Shah Rukh Khan has been constantly at Juhi’s side since the death of her brother Sanjiv aka ‘Bobby’ Chawla. Sanjiv had been the former CEO of Red Chillies Entertainment and was admitted to the hospital after a massive stroke in 2010 and has been in coma since then. The actress, who is busy organising a prayer meet for her brother, expressed her grievance on Twitter as she wrote: "Seems like I'm dreaming all this... 11 days since my brother passed away..." Juhi has posted a video, which is a collection of clips on Sanjiv. Talking about the video, Juhi wrote: "And gone away so young... A recent press statement issued by a brother from the music group RDB, Manj Ral, announcing that he was going solo, has caused alarm across the music industry and bands loyal fanbase alike. However, the youngest brother Surjeet Ral (better known as Surj RDB), has confirmed to the Asian Express during his recent visit to his hometown Bradford, that he intends to continue the legacy of RDB. It is widely known that whilst Kuly was the musical leader, and Manj his musical foil, Surj’s influence on the musical direction of the group was key to their success, which led them to be one of UK’s first music artists to break into Bollywood. In addition to fronting the group with his brothers, Surj also was responsible for handling the group’s business affairs which in turn saw RDB soar to Bollywood success with hits like ‘Singh Is King’ with Snoop Dogg, ‘Kambakkht Ishq’, ‘Aloo Chaat’, ‘Paisa Paisa’, and ‘Sadi Gali’ from Tanu Weds Manu to name but a few. Driven by his passion to produce music, Surj says that he has no intention of backing down from the music scene and that he will always carry the torch in honour of his eldest brother Kuldeep Ral (Kuly), who passed away in 2012. Surj says: “I was sad to see my brother Manj leave RDB. Along with my late brother Kuly, he was one of the founders of the group. Imagine this car, with an electrical cord. It could happen, and fairly soon. Although fuel efficiency is just about the last thing that a Rolls Royce brings to mind, but the company may change that with a plug-in hybrid, of all things. The good chaps in Goodwood know they face a challenge in meeting rising fuel efficiency

standards and tightening emissions, so they’re experimenting with various ways of squeezing more miles from every drop of petrol. Company CEO Torston MüllerOtvos has said that making a hybrid is essential, not due to customer demand perhaps, but through legal regulation on emissions. Rolls hasn’t mentioned any specifics for such a car, which is clearly an idea at this point, but it a good guess-timate suggests we

might see it within three years. But if a Phantom plug-in came to pass, it almost certainly would use drivetrain components from corporate parent BMW, which has a range of hybrids, the i3 and i8 electric vehicles, and a plug-in setup (featuring a four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor) for the X5 eDrive. For those of you who are thinking that Rolls is suddenly going soft, remember that even the LeFerrari has a gas-electric

drivetrain, so it’s not like a Phantom with a cord with be a glorified Prius. This wouldn’t be be the first time Rolls has played with electricity. A few years ago, it unveiled the all-electric Phantom prototype called the 102EX. The absolutely stunning car was a trial balloon that customers promptly shot down. Despite producing more torque than the standard Phantom’s V12, the car’s range, claimed at 120 miles, was just too small for

consumers to consider. Many also found the technology incongruous with the marque’s identity, which is a definitive monument to luxury, power, and disposable income. Now, however Rolls say that plug-in hybrid Rolls-Royce would not come with any kind of compromise, and both the recharging times and the range will be top of the agenda. They also say that with the developments in hybrid technology, the issues faced earlier will no longer be a problem.

Audi is ready to add a little oil to the wheels of the daily grind with advanced traffic light recognition technology, which could make driving through towns and cities far more fluid and free of annoying and economy-denting red light punctuation. Audi Online traffic light information harnesses the power of in-car internet in a new way via Audi connect to establish a link between the car and the traffic light network via the central traffic computer in each town or city. It quickly assimilates the automated traffic light change sequences in the vicinity, and on the approach to a set of lights the Driver Information System (DIS) located in the central instrument cluster then shows the driver the speed to select in order to pass through the light during a green phase. It also displays a visual aid using red, amber

Available with three and five doors, the new C1 range starts at just £8,245 for the C1 Touch VTi 68 manual 3-door, rising to £11,935 for the new C1 Airscape Flair VTi 68 ETG 5-door. With eight body colours to choose from, including four metallic options, three colour choices for the fabric roof,

Nurburgring sold for £84m The world’s most famous racetrack - the Nurburgring, known as ‘Green Hell’, has officially been sold. Capricorn, a Dusseldorfbased parts company, has purchased the 12.9-mile track for a reported €100 million (£84 million), almost two years after the racetrack first went up for sale. The deal also includes an investment of around €25 million (£20 million) to help further develop the site and improve security. The new owners will launch a new company called Capricorn Nurburgring, which will manage the new business of 1 January 2015. "As an enthusiastic motor sport fan, the Nurburgring has always been a passion of mine," said Dr. Robertino Wild, managing partner of the Capricorn group.

“We have identified the enormous potential of this unique race venue and would like to optimise the existing structures, but above all turn the vision of an Automotive Technology Cluster into reality.” Built in 1927, the Nurburgring covers an area of 937 acres and has hosted over 30 Formula 1 races on its Grand Prix circuit. Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake super estate revealed Jaguar unveils a more potent version of its most practical model, the XFR-S Sportbrake is powered by a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8. Jaguar has kept us guessing about whether it would build a highperformance XF Sportbrake, but we now have an emphatic answer. Rather than simply building a XFR Sportbrake, Jaguar has skipped straight to XFR-S specification for the most practical model in its range. Set to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show, the Sportbrake joins the XFR-S Saloon and XKR-S as the third member of the ballistic R-S family. Like its siblings it uses a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 producing 680Nm of torque – enough to rocket it from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the XFR-S Saloon, and on to an identical top speed of 186mph, despite weighing around 90kg more. Jaguar’s designers have translated the Saloon’s pumped up styling into the Sportbrake’s more sensible bodystyle, minus the wild rear wing of course. It does get a much smaller roof spoiler though, along with a deeper front bumper and front splitter to boost downforce at high

Jaguar has also made changes to the standard XF range - introducing a R-Sport model. It gets the looks of a performance model, with a chunky bodykit, but is only available with the 161bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine returning 57.7mpg and 129g/km. Order books for the new XF models open on April 1, with the XFR-S Sportbrake priced at £82,495. Its closest rivals will be the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes E63 AMG Estate.

Tesla joins the show

Electric vehicle manufacturer and fleet market new-comer, Tesla, is the latest car maker to commit to this year’s Fleet World Fleet Show on April 9 when it will be making its stunning new EVs available for test driving around the world-famous racing circuit. Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers who wanted to prove that electric vehicles could be the answer to stylish but emissions-free motoring. The latest car from Tesla is the Model S, which was recently voted Car of the Year in 2014 in Norway and The Most Stylish Car of the Year 2014 in Switzerland.

The Model S is the first premium sports saloon to be designed as an electric car from the ground up. It features a battery pack located under the cabin which offers a range up to 300 miles and, using the carmaker’s network of Supercharger fast charging units coming soon to the UK, drivers are able to travel long distances with no fuel charge. Tesla recently announced it is to open more than 30 new service centres across Europe, including two more in the UK, as sales of the Model S begin to accelerate. Tesla country director for the UK and Ireland, Georg Ell, commented: “With first deliveries of the new right hand drive Model S arriving this spring, the Fleet

Formula One Returns Flying start for Force India, as new-look side clinches double points finish

After months of waiting, the 2014 Formula One campaign finally got under way last weekend with sports fans all over the world tuning in to see what the latest instalment of the fast and furious sport had to offer. Last season was a dominant year for Sebastian Vettel, yet his Australian appearance was short lived as his new look Red Bull engine stuttered after just five laps, leading the German to an early exit. Lewis Hamilton started on pole, yet also failed to complete the race after his car’s loss of power after just two laps, allowing his Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg, to steal the show with an emphatic victory in the opening race. Elsewhere, there was delight in the Force India tent after both racers clinched points finishes, after

second placed Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified after the race for failing to oblige to new fuel consumption rules. The Red Bull driver’s mistake allowed Force India’s Sergio perez to steal tenth position, and one point for the constructors, adding to Nico Hulkenberg’s impressive eight point haul for finishing sixth. Both drivers were making their first starts for the new look side, and for Nico Hulkenberg it was the perfect start to the latest chapter in his racing career. “Sixth place is a positive way to start the season,” he said. “I was very happy to see the chequered flag – the first time I’ve done so in Melbourne – and it’s important to score some good points early on. “I made a strong start and enjoyed good track position for the first two stints when I was running up in fourth. “The only real issue I had was some front left graining

on the soft tyres, which never really cleared up and that compromised my first two stints. It was a shame to lose two positions at my second stop [to Button and Alonso] but it looks like some of the cars around us have a bit more pace at the moment. “I want to thank the team for the amazing job they’ve done over the winter and this weekend to get us to this point. It’s been a great effort and it’s nice to reward everyone with some points at the first race.” Up next on the Formula One calendar is the Malaysian Grand Prix, set to be held on Sunday 30th March. Last year’s track champion, Vettel, will be hoping for less controversy than his previous Malaysian appearance, where he overshadowed a fine performance from the Red Bull team, going against team orders to pass his teammate, Mark Webber, to set up a feisty looking podium.

In what will be Adil Anwar’s first professional bout of 2014, the Leeds fighter will take on an unnamed opponent at Elland Road’s Banqueting Suite next weekend. After back-toback defeats at the end of last year, the ‘Platinum Kid’ will be looking to bounce back with a win on Friday night, as he looks to get his boxing career back on track. Defeat at the hands of Darren Hamilton, was followed up by a shock loss to the relatively unknown Simone Lucas, and it has now been six months since Anwar last stepped in the ring. With such a break allowing him to prepare for the comeback fight, both mentally and physically, he said he was in the shape of his life as he readied himself for action. The fight, as with all of the Yorkshireman’s fights, is already selling out quickly, with his loyal fan base snapping up the seats. Victory could be just the kick-start Anwar needs as he hopes to put himself amongst the title contenders later this year.

5th April 2014 Martial Mohsin in action Mohsin Hussain only took up Ju-Jitsu some three years ago after accompanying a friend to a training session, yet at the start of next month, he will be competing in his first British Championships. The Bradford martial arts ace has become one of the top trainers at the city’s Onna Ju-Jitsu club, where he is trained by Sensei Mumtaz Khan, a fifth degree blackbelt with over 16 years of experience. He is already predicted a medal finish, after excelling in the sport he says he loves, and is hopeful of advancing onto the international stage after the tournament. The International JuJitsu Championships are set to be held in Denmark in the autumn and Mohsin says his target is to be included in the GB squad who will make the trip to Scandinavia. All this, of course, depends on how he does at the British Championships in April, in what will be his first appearance.

It was third time’s the charm for Afghanistan’s national Twenty20 side as they picked up their first ever win in the format of the game in their third appearance at the World Twenty20 series. A seven wicket victory over Hong Kong in Chittagong, Bangladesh, ensured the Afghan side made their mark in the history books and kept their feint hopes of qualifying for the Super 10 stage alive. Captain Mohammad Shahzad's quickfire 68 and an unbeaten 51 from Shafiqullah, propelled the victor’s past Hong Kong's 153 for eight with 12 balls to spare. Their final Group A clash will come against Nepal on Thursday, where they will need to claim victory, and hope Bangladesh stumble, if they are to advance in the competition. Only the top team from the four-strong group will progress to the main draw, with tournament hosts Bangladesh best-placed after their opening win over Afghanistan. Shahzad's side were bowled out for just 72 in that match but, despite having not won at the World Twenty20 in their previous two trips to the tournament, began as favourites against a Hong Kong side making their debut. Hong Kong lost their first game against fellow rookies Nepal, but were able to set a testing total after three of their top four – Waqas Barkat (32), Jamie Atkinson (31) and Mark Chapman (38) – made starts without going on. Shahzad and Shafiqullah showed the importance of going on for more, however, especially the skipper as he thrashed his 68 from 53 balls at the top of the order to set up the chase. Shahzad hit three sixes, including an MS Dhoni-style "helicopter" shot off Aizaz Khan, and while he was unable to finish the job, Shafiqullah did with a four that also brought up his half-century from 24 balls.

would it look if I came in and just took whatever money they had.” Member not only gave the funds to the children in the area he was working with, but also gave the rest of his purse to a homeless centre in the country. Now, the welterweight fighter, who has had eight European Boxing Federation bouts to date, winning six by knockout and losing two, needs a sponsor to help him finally achieve his dream of turning professional full-time. Elland Road, of 2,000 spectators, Manzoor clinched a unanimous decision to take his record up to two wins without defeat. A bloody affair resulted in Collier receiving a number of devastating blows to his face, opening cuts on both his nose and eyebrow in three gruelling rounds. The West Yorkshire competitor, from Scout Hill, Dewsbury, is just one of the rising stars from KBW’s MMA team. Trained by acclaimed coaches Reg Jones, from Leeds, and Mabsy Alam, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who gained his credentials in Rio de Janeiro, the side are proving a

promising setup. Elsewhere, KBW boxer, Ayub Khan, was in action in Leeds on Wednesday night as he picked up a dominant victory over York Amateur Boxing Club’s Cam Shaw. Claiming a unanimous decision after three rounds, Khan was close to picking up a knockout victory when his opponent was given a standing eight-count by the referee in the second round. Despite a bloodied nose from round one, Shaw showed determination throughout to last all the way, yet it was his opponent who came away with victory. The win signals yet another convincing performance from Ayub, whose perfect streak stretches to eight wins without defeat. At just 16-years-old he is already proving a real talent, and is due to be training with the Yorkshire training squad at the English Institute of sport in Sheffield. Ayub is a student of Greenhead College in Huddersfield and is coached by Martin Bateson and Tanny Hussain.

Serbian Success Djokovic clinches Indian Wells title

Pictures of Novak Djokovic with trophies is becoming something of a common sight yet the world number two was certainly made to work for his latest success as he played out a classic encounter with Roger Federer. After losing the first set, 3-6, the Serbian came back to pick up a second set victory and a close encounter in the third was only decided by a tie-break with Djokovic eventually winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). In what is Djokovic’s first title of 2014, he spoke of his delight of picking up the Indian Masters title for the third time and now looks to kick-on with the rest of his season. “You always have to dig deep against Roger,” he said. “I'm just very happy and thrilled to be able to win the first title in this season. “Mentally this definitely helps my confidence.” Federer, aiming for an unprecedented fifth Indian Wells title, wrapped up the first set in just over half-an hour, looking more confident than his opponent who was suffering his worst start to a year since 2006. The Swiss veteran broke his opponent when Djokovic missed out on a backhand, whilst a pair of double faults from the Serb showed signs of low confidence. Yet, as the game played out, Djokovic
