A Muslim from Bradford says he was determined to look past racism after he helped a homeless man, who shouted racial slurs at him, find a home and employment. 30-year-old Aminur Chowdhury, from Manningham, did what very few others would do when confronted by a racist term, he engaged in active conversation with the culprit and befriended him. Not only that, but the following day, Aminur phoned up his new acquaintance, who was unemployed at the time, and helped him get a job at one of his friend’s businesses. The guilty party on this occasion was 27year-old Ben Gallon, from Frizinghall, Bradford, who had been drinking through the day.

Business Growth Scheme in Bradford Boxing Star is special guest at restaurant opening

May 2014 - 4th Edition
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Amir ‘King’ Khan paid a special visit to Bradford last weekend as he was the guest of honour at the opening of My Lahore’s new look restaurant on Great Horton Road. The welterweight champ was welcomed by fans and local businessmen as he paid a special visit to the city with his friends and family, including younger brother Haroon, who is an upcoming star himself. The humble boxer was happy to pose for pictures with every person outside the restaurant and spoke to locals about things from Boxing to Bradford and everything in between. My Lahore’s site has doubled in size due to the expansions, which
was partly funded by a £149,189 grant from Bradford Council’s City Centre Business Growth Scheme. Asghar Ali, CEO of My Lahore, explained why the restaurant had decided to expand and how it would be beneficial for the local community. “We’ve been in Bradford now for the past 12 years and when we got the opportunity to expand our Great Horton site through to next door it seemed the ideal move, especially with the council’s support. “The response so far has been fantastic. We have increased seating size from 120 to 250 and also doubled the number of staff employed so it is also giving back to the local community.” He added: “Amir [Khan] is a friend of the family and regularly
visits so was more than happy to come down to the redeveloped site and also speak about his Amir Khan Foundation.” The City Centre Growth Scheme is a £35 million initiative, jointly funded by Bradford Council and the Government's Regional Growth Fund. Leader of Bradford Council, Cllr David Green, wished the company the best of luck for the future and looked forward to seeing the grant used in a positive way for the city. He said: “This is a great example of how the City Centre Business Growth Scheme can give a step up to an already successful business to expand further and boost the local economy by creating jobs. I wish the Lahore Cafe Bar every success with their new larger premises.”

A further 36,000 Leeds homes will switch to more frequent recycling collections this summer. All suitable properties in Crossgates, Whinmoor, Killingbeck, Seacroft and Temple Newsam will have their black bins emptied one week and green bins emptied the next by August. At the same time, some suitable properties in Burmantofts, Richmond Hill, Gipton, Harehills and Roundhay will move to the new bin service. Around 170,000 homes already have their recycling bins picked up more frequently. The addition of another 36,000 properties means around 60 per cent of Leeds’ homes will be on the more frequent collection schedule.
Stop before you start
A Leeds school is finding new ways to stop pupils taking up smoking by giving a group of students the knowledge and skills to encourage fellow students to stay tobacco free at a time when two thirds of people who smoke do so before the age of 18. Pupils at Swallow Hill High School are taking preventative steps to reduce the chances they will ever have to stop smoking by never starting. The school is using an initiative supported by Leeds City Council called ASSIST which aims to reduce the number of young people smoking by making sure they never start. Two day workshops provide them with information about the effects of smoking on health and the benefits of remaining smoke free and they can then spread this information by having informal conversations about smoking with their peers.
RIGHTS: Co-Chairmen of the Keighley and Bradford Taxi Driver’s Association, Shabir Ahmad and Azad Yousaf Khan, want greater communication from councils to help local cabbies
‘We need a voice’ By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
An association of West Yorkshire taxi drivers has said its members need a greater say in the way their industry is run, after a host of council rulings continue to make their lives ‘harder and harder’. The Keighley and Bradford Taxi Driver’s Association was set up earlier this year to give a voice to local cabbies who have long complained about licensing around their businesses. More than one hundred members have reportedly already signed up to the group and they are now hoping that, after the local elections, a representative from the council will begin to open talks in regard to their line of work. Shabir Ahmed is one of the cochairmen of the group and has been a taxi driver for more than 20 years. He explained why his, and many other cabbies’, experience behind the wheel should be enough to give them a say in decisions effecting their trade. “This same thing is happening every year now,” he said. “We are getting new rules and regulations put on our cars all the time so it is giving us a consistent unwanted experience which isn’t even necessary.
Bradford cabbies feel silenced in row over licensing
“The people making these rules have no experience of what being a taxi driver is like yet they continue to implement new licensing without even speaking to any drivers who surely have a better idea of what is needed.” Mr Ahmed says he set up the group, not to just be a ‘yes’ party to all council decisions, but to help fight for what is right for taxi drivers. “We are here to ask the questions that they don’t necessarily want to hear,” he added. “Whoever has a problem we will help them and hopefully sort it directly with the council. “Ten years ago your wife for example could drive the taxi to pick up the kids from school. Now it is only the registered taxi driver who is allowed. “This has given families the added expense of having to buy another, separate car, despite the old policy having no issues with safety.” Government plans are currently being considered to
change a number of red tape restrictions on taxi drivers, which could save up to £9million a year for drivers. Current rules being considered include: Allowing non-licence holders, perhaps a family member, to drive a private hire vehicle when they are ‘off duty.’; introducing three-year licences for taxis and private hire drivers – and five years for operators – scrapping annual checks in many areas; and allowing minicab operators to ‘subcontract’ bookings to other operators in a different district, without the passenger’s knowledge. Mr Ahmad said the industry is in dire need of changes and that his friends in the business are the one’s suffering because of ‘false beliefs of what constitute safety’. “Everything is considered a safety risk now and unless the restrictions are changed by government, the life of a taxi driver will only get harder and harder.”

A CHANGE IN RACIST VIEWS
FRIENDS: Aminur helped Ben get a job and find an apartment, despite initially engaging in conversation due to an ‘uncharacteristic racist remark’
Muslim Bradford man helps change the life of an unemployed man who sneered at him
Cover story continued Both men now acknowledge this action was ‘completely out of character’ and Aminur says he knew from the very start that Ben was a ‘smart man’ and just wanted to help someone who he could tell ‘didn’t have a vicious bone in his body’. “Ben’s been a pleasure to know really,” he said. “From the first time I met him at The Delius I could tell that I was speaking to someone who is very passionate. “I was scared for him at first because there were two police officers there and I felt that they could have taken him away because of the racist language, but I certainly didn’t want to see that happen. “He has a very good grasp of ideologies and I was very impressed so I thought I’m going to engage with this person because he’s like a counter-copy of myself.” After speaking at the venue, both men handed over contact details and Ben says he didn’t even know whether they would
ever meet again. “When I met Aminur in The Delius, I was in a bit of a predicament; I was technically homeless, without a job and had just moved back down from Edinburgh,” he said. “We spoke at the pub and he mentioned about a job but I thought he might have just been being polite. “But true to his word, the next day he gave me a call, said ‘can I come pick you up Ben, I’ve got an interview for you’. That same day, he came round to get me, drove me down to the place on Canal Road and then within ten minutes I had been offered the job.” Ben had been working as a cleaner in Scotland before moving back to Bradford to be closer to his family after his contract expired. Having no permanent residence, Aminur has now also helped arrange for the Bradfordborn resident to move into an apartment in Frizinghall, whilst their friendship continues to strengthen. “He really is a diamond, I
don’t have a single bad word to say about him,” Ben added. “He is a fantastic bloke and we may have only known each other for a week but we are already very close. I can’t really thank him enough for the help he has given me over the past week.” Both men now agree that they want to see their circumstance replicated in the city, and help improve relations between different cultures and religions in Bradford. “Ben and I together now can hopefully help challenge issues, like racism in society, in a positive way,” Aminur added. “The way I've done it for Ben, I now know he would do the same for me, and that way of thinking is all we need to achieve great things here in Bradford.” Ben added: “We really are singing from the same hymn sheet. Being from Bradford we know racism is the key issue and we’ve both seen it from different angles. Now we just want to tackle that subject and help make Bradford the great place we know it can be.”

One Direction’s Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson ‘smoke drugs’ in leaked footage
TROUBLE: Zayn Malik and a voice believed to be bandmate Louis Tomlinson caught smoking what seems to be marijuana
Scandal By Anush Ansari
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford sweetheart Zayn Malik along with bandmate Louis Tomlinson are in a smoke of trouble, quite literally! As the footage of Zayn and Louis happily puffing away on what looks like a marijuana cigarette has gone viral, One Direction’s spokesperson Mike Navarra, of Columbia Records has refused to answer any questions stating: “Our only comment at the moment is the whole situation is in the hands of our lawyers.” The pair were en route to their ‘Where We Are Tour’ concert at Estadio Nacional in Lima, just outside Peru on April 27th along with three other people. They are seen talking about ‘something’ and when apparently Louis catches on to what they’re going on about, he says: “It’s about the joint. What a great thing to capture in a different language. They were just asking if it’s OK,” he says. One of the other men asks: “Are we allowed to talk contraband in this?” a voice believed to be Louis replies: “Yes, that's what it is about.”
Louis is then heard saying he wants to “light up” as the car drives out of a parking lot, with a rolled cigarette appearing to be lit on camera. “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!” he can be heard saying. At times members of the band’s team can be heard talking about ‘chicken.’ It isn’t clear what is meant by ‘chicken’ as the guys joke and laugh in increasingly high spirits. To make matters worse, the fiveminute film seems to be shot by Louis himself, how it’s been leaked still remains a mystery. The teenage heartthrobs are thought to be in serious trouble with their record label and who knows what Simon Cowell’s reaction will be. Fans have been split on how they feel about this leaked clip. Many have ripped up pre paid tickets to ‘One Direction’s’ concerts. Some have taken to social media stating that Zayn and Louis have been hugely irresponsible to their young fanbase where others have said that people should leave them alone. Possession of a small amount of cannabis is not illegal in Peru.

Awarding authors
The favourite page turners of Leeds school children have been recognised in two special awards ceremonies held in the city this month. As part of the 2014 Leeds Book Awards, over 700 children from 50 primary schools and 18 high schools packed into Pudsey Civic Hall and Leeds Civic Hall in two events to celebrate their favourite authors and books of the last year in the 9-11, 1114 and 14-16 age categories. In total, 60 primary schools and 20 high schools from across the city participated in the awards, which saw young people avidly reading and discussing each shortlisted book before choosing their own winner in each respective category. With many of the shortlisted authors in attendance, tension was high as the golden envelopes containing the names of the winners were opened on the stage. Triumphing in the 9-11 category was Rob Lloyd Jones for ‘Wildboy’, Holly Smale in the 11-14 category for ‘Geek Girl’, while Annabel Pitcher came out on top in the 14-16 category with ‘Ketchup Clouds’.

Hudderfield's very own ‘Headteacher of the Year’ AWARDED: Mrs Hawa Bibi Laher OBE received the Silver Teaching Award for ‘Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School’ for her work with Huddersfield based Spring Grove Primary School

Star By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A local headteacher has been given an A* grade for her work at a Huddersfield school which has been officially rated as Outstanding for the past eight years. Hawa Bibi Laher OBE has already been honoured by the Queen for her services to education and earlier this month she was confirmed as the recipient
of the ‘Silver Pearson Teaching Award’ for ‘Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School’. Mrs Laher, originally from South Africa but residing in Mirfield, has been at the Spring Grove Primary School since 1997 and took over the reins as headteacher in 2004. The single form entry school has more than 200 pupils and has been commended by Ofsted as one of the best primary educational establishments in the area.

During Mrs Laher’s time at Spring Grove she has worked closely with the local community to make it excel in the area with students from all backgrounds attending. This latest award is a prestigious accolade, which will eventually see Mrs Laher visit the House of Commons for Celebratory Tea, yet she insists that the greatest part for her was the recognition she had received from her staff. “To be put forward for an award by my colleagues was the highlight for me,” she said. “It meant far more to me knowing that they believe in me than actually getting the trophy which I am very proud to receive. “A school is not just about children it is about staff, parents and the community as well. I’m only as good as my staff and I see it as an award for everybody involved with Spring Grove.” Mrs Laher added her praise to the rest of the school, without which ‘this award would not have been possible’. “It really is a lovely, amazing school to work at,” she added. “All the pupils are so polite and well behaved but that is also because of my fantastic team of staff and teachers who only want the best for every single child. “I am very lucky to be headteacher here and grateful to everybody for helping us become recognised as the outstanding school which we are.” Deputy Headteacher, Debbie Kelly, put her colleague’s name forward initially for the award and says she more than deserves all the plaudits that come her way. “Bibi is an outstanding leader and role model,” she said. “This is a much deserved award recognising the dedication she has given not only to our school but to all the partners with whom we work.” Mrs Laher was presented with a trophy at the school in a special assembly on Monday 19th May and is scheduled to visit the House of Commons on the 24th June.

Meet UKIP’s latest MEP - Amjad Bashir By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
After the UK Independence Party (UKIP) stormed the European elections, and made significant progress in the UK’s regional votes, the group which targets a referendum to leave the EU are beginning to ‘cause the tremors that could lead to an earthquake’, according to a newly elected MEP. Out of the 70 MEP seats available, it was UKIP (24 seats) who picked up the majority in a record-breaking vote, with Labour (20) and Conservative (19) pushed back into second and third place respectively. Former businessman, Amjad Bashir, was one UKIP candidate who was successful in his campaign for an MEP seat, representing Yorkshire and the Humber alongside two fellow party members, two Labour and one Conservative. More than 400,000 votes were cast across the region and Mr Bashir, who only joined the UKIP party two years ago, states that the results show how the public are beginning to lose patience with the EU. Speaking to the Asian Express, he said: “Never before has a party outside of the main political parties come in and done so well. “To knock Conservatives into a third position has never been done

School changes
Proposals affecting two special schools in Kirklees will be discussed by Cabinet members on Tuesday 3rd June. The proposals involve changing the specialism at Longley School and adding places at Lydgate School, which could also be relocated. Work has been ongoing for several years to look at ways of designing specialist provision in Kirklees, ensuring it can best meet the needs of pupils with special educational needs (SEN). There is a changing pattern of demand for special school places in south Kirklees, including a growth in the number of children and young people with an autistic spectrum condition. The proposals are designed to put the provision where it is needed most and to ensure highquality learning environments.

A unique project has been launched in Bradford which will see pupils from local schools strengthen their ties with fellow students from Syria. Five schools from the city have been taking part in the ‘What is Home?’ project spearheaded by Human Relief Foundation (HRF) and Horton Grange primary school. Youngsters, from both countries, have been tasked with drawing their idea of home on a small piece of canvas material with all the final pieces then sewn together to make a giant patchwork canvas which will be officially unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Bradford during Refugee Week. Representatives from HRF have recently flown over to Jordan, where many Syrian refugees have been living since fleeing from their war-torn homes, to see children complete canvases of their own. After depicting their images of home on a small piece of material, the HRF team then teamed up with schools in Bradford to hold an identical project with local schoolchildren. Qais Khaliq, HRF fundraising co-ordinator, explained how the project came about. “Human relief foundation has been working with refugees for more than 20 years and did some work with

Schools involved in the project include: Horton Grange Primary, Copthorne, Southfield Grange, Lidget Green, St Oswalds and Princeville. Nick Bell, Headteacher at Grange Technology College added: “We are delighted to be able to involve our students in contributing to the canvas patchwork for Refugee Week. “We will be promoting the event across the Southfield Grange Campus to help raise awareness amongst our students of the types of issues and challenges faced by refugees.” Horton Grange Primary are currently working towards a ‘City of Sanctuary award’ which highlights the positive work an educational establishment does in regard to refugees.

The Great Halal debate By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
For the past number of weeks, halal has been top of the menu for different media across the country yet why has it suddenly become such an issue despite being prevalent for hundreds of years? Every other season, a new anti-Islamic debate seems to arise and, whether it be in relation to the hijab or grooming gangs, the finger is often pointed towards Muslims by members of society. The latest epidemic seems to revolve around the method of slaughter, known as ‘halal’, which many farright supporters have backed a ban on. Currently, the Halal Food Authority (HFA) estimate that just 15 per cent of meat slaughtered in Britain is halal compliant to adhere to the needs of the 2.4million Muslims currently living in the UK. For meat to be constituted as halal, an animal, which is alive, must be slaughtered in a particular way, with a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. A prayer, known as ‘tasmiya’ or ‘shahada’, will then be said to complete the process. Despite causing a media storm over recent weeks, it seems that campaigners against the meat are still in the minority. In Wakefield, West Yorkshire, we went into three butchers, with only one employee at an unnamed premise, saying that people had specifically asked not to be served halal meat.
CONTROVERSIAL: An amendment to the Consumer Rights Bill, which would have forced all produce containing halal or kosher meat to label such a fact, failed by 264 votes
In the city’s Hoffman and Son’s, butcher, Andrew Brook, said he had not noticed any change in the number of customers speaking about halal. “If people wanted halal, they would just go to one of the many halal butchers we have in the city so I don’t really think it is that big of an issue,” he said. “We have had some people talk about it but no, what you would call, White British customers have specifically said they don’t want halal produce.” It seems the word on the street is also very similar to CONTENT: Hoffmans and Son’s butcher, Andrew Brook, said he hadn’t really noticed any change in regard to customers speaking or asking about halal
that which Mr Brook had said, with all four members of the public saying they didn’t feel anything was wrong with the current halal situation in the UK. Earlier this week, MPs rejected an attempt to force shops, supermarkets and anywhere serving food to clearly label products containing halal or kosher meat. Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, had proposed the amendment to consumer rights yet his plans were rejected by a substantial 281 votes to 17.

Mr Rashid Being a Muslim I obviously think it’s important to have it stated on a menu whether something is halal or not. For the rest of community or religions, it doesn’t matter if it is halal or not in that respect. If somebody doesn’t want to eat halal because of their own personal reasons, such as the way it is killed, then they shouldn’t have to, it’s visa-versa really. It’s the same rules for everyone; we should all have the choice of halal or non-halal. The thing is now, we live in such a big market where food is concerned that it has to be specified where halal is concerned. There shouldn’t really be an argument because Russell Brand said ‘you’re killing the animal either way and when something dies it is suffering so it is just a formality’.
Rachel Nelson I don’t like to really think about how meat is killed or slaughtered anyway. I don’t know how the meat I eat is killed so it doesn’t really make a difference to me. If I don’t see it then I don’t really think about it in that sense so I would happily eat either. I guess people who aren’t Muslims could have the choice of halal or not if they wanted but it doesn’t bother me.
Nigel Clegg I don’t care how my meat is prepared. As long as it is dead and not breathing or poisonous, I don’t care its just food. I don’t see where the debate comes from in regard to halal. To me if it is meat, it is meat. Halal meat and normal meat doesn’t taste any different so I don’t see any point in arguing about it, it’s just ridiculous. The animal is being killed anyway, so if somebody is saying a prayer over it, why would it bother me. It’s not going to affect the taste, texture or quality, it’s just meat.
Haider Shah I think everybody should have a choice. Some people will want to eat it and others won’t but that is up to them. It is not an inhumane way to kill an animal I would say because the nerve is cut straight away so there is no feeling after that. I don’t really know why the debate has begun to rise again, it may be just people listening to what a minority are saying.

‘Self-defence is no offence’ PRISON: 24-year-old Shamas Ahmad was sentenced to five years in prison last month after being charged with GBH as he worked as a doorman in Leeds
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
After more than one month of fighting to prove their son’s ‘innocence’, a Leeds family finally got some good news earlier this week as potential mistakes were found in the original case. The family of 24-year-old Shamas Ahmad had reason to be uplifted after being told by their new solicitors that there was ‘five or six’ discrepancies in the trial which need to be further explored. Shamas was sentenced to five years in prison after being charged with Gross Bodily Harm (GBH) whilst working as a doorman at the Leeds Bierkeller venue. After getting involved in an altercation with a group of customers, Shamas allegedly responded to getting attacked by hitting one of them over the head four times with a glass. Since the sentencing in April, friends and family of the former Sainsbury’s employee have held demonstrations outside both Leeds

The family handed the case over to a new solicitor in hope of finding grounds for appeal and just days ago they were given the good news. Shamas’ father, Mukhtar Ahmad, says he was delighted to hear of the discrepancies, and said he always
insisted that the trial was not handled correctly. Explaining what the new solicitor had told him, Mr Ahmad said: “The new solicitors have identified five or six discrepancies and now we are just waiting for the case papers to be sent over from the old solicitor. “We have also had a breakthrough with new witnesses coming forward
PROTEST: Demonstrators once again gathered outside the former solicitor’s offices to appeal the conviction of Shamas
after reading the Asian Express newspaper. They have been contacted by Shamas’ solicitors to obtain statements in the near future. “Asian Express has made an important contribution and I believe ,without them, we may never have had the coverage and vital witnesses would never have known anything about the case.
“I sincerely thank them for the coverage they have given this miscarriage of justice. We will keep doing the protests to highlight the poor preparation they made for the trial of my son.” Until the solicitors are able to get hold of the original case files the appeal stage can not progress any further.

Big pay-out Last week, two groups, who had been given a substantial donation from West Yorkshire Police’s Safer Communities Fund, were featured in the Asian Express, and now more money has been seized for the county’s growing fund. Almost £120,000 in cash was found at the home and business premises of a Halifax businessman who has been forced to hand over the huge sum to the courts. Officers investigating the accounts of Mohammed Reza Shahsavar, 40, discovered £117,000 in cash during a money laundering investigation. Shahsavar had told police the cash was partly business loans and an overdraft from his business account, but it was later seized as part of the Proceeds of Crime Act. This means that, on top of the already growing pot, an extra £58,500 will be added to the police Commissioner’s Safer Communities Fund which helps charity’s and community groups

India bans testing cosmetics on animals
LABS: Not all brands employ animal testing in their research processes for products and ingredients but a sizeable portion definitely do

India has outlawed the testing of cosmetic products and their ingredients on animals. Following a 45-day public consultation period, the ban came into effect on Friday May 24th, and announced by India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The removal of animal testing follows an intense campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and work by MP Maneka Gandhi and others. “This landmark law will ensure not only that the lives of countless animals are spared but also that only
human-relevant, modern, non-animal testing methods are used to assess the safety of cosmetics products in the country,” says PETA UK's Mimi Bekhechi. “Because animal-tested cosmetics can still be sold in India, however, PETA India and its international affiliates are now urging the government to ban the sale of cosmetics if they or their ingredients have been tested on animals. “Such a move would bring India in line with the European Union and Israel, nations that have already banned the sale of animaltested cosmetics.” With this ban, India joins a list of countries like Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN FAMILY LAW
DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing the recent changes in the area of private family law.
From 22 April 2014 there are various changes which will have an impact on applicants wishing to commence Children Act proceedings. The Children and Families Act 2014 sets out the following major changes: • Introduction of Single Family Court – A national court for all family proceedings in England & Wales. Although local county courts will still exist to accept counter applications such as divorce, all applications relating to children will have to be issued from a centralised Designated Family Court. The case will then be allocated by the ‘gatekeeping team’ to the most appropriate court and level of judge. • Compulsory family mediation – Courts will no longer accept applications to issue Children Act proceedings (unless a specified exemption applies) until applicants have first attended a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This is now a compulsory requirement for separating couples to resolve financial matters and arrangements for children. • New terminology – ‘Contact’ and ‘residence’ orders will be removed and instead will be called ‘child arrangement orders’. This is to highlight the court’s primary concern of the welfare of the child. • New rules on evidence – Expert evidence (e.g. local authority reports) will only be permitted if it is ‘necessary’ to assist the court to resolve disputes justly. • Court fees – There is no longer a court fee for injunction applications, such as nonmolestation and occupation orders, given the urgency and sensitivity of such applications. I deal with all areas of private family law. Contact me for a confidential chat or to book your free 30 minute face-to-face consultation.

Trade ties praised Diaspora champion welcomes 6.6 per cent growth in UK-India transactions last year By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Priti Patel MP, the Prime Minister’s UK Indian Diaspora Champion, welcomes the latest UKIndia trade statistics that show that the total value of bilateral trade between the UK and India grew by 6.6 per cent in 2013 as compared to 2012. According to the latest data from the Office of National Statistics, the total value of two-way trade of goods and services between the UK and India was £16.4 billion in 2013, compared to £15.4 billion in 2012. UK exports to India were valued at over £7.6 billion last year, compared to £6.9 billion in the previous year. In the four years since 2010 when this Government came to power, from 2010 – 2013 the total value of goods and services was £63.2 billion, compared to £43.4 billion in the four
years before this Government was formed. Last year, on average there was roughly £45 million in two-way transactions between the UK and India each day. Priti said: “The 6.6 per cent growth in two-way trade last year is yet another example that the Prime Minister is delivering on his commitment to increasing the UK’s trade ties with India. UK exports of goods and services to India have significantly contributed to meeting this Government’s ambitious target of increasing annual UK exports to £1 trillion by 2020. “I commend UK exporters for not just the strength of their enterprises, but for realising the enormous commercial opportunities that India presents now and for the decades to come. I hope this trend continues and our businesses continue to reap the benefits of investing and setting up shop in one of the world’s most dynamic economies.”

Having recently launched their first ever food bank in Bradford, the InTouch Foundation team have continued to expand their growing charity with two big announcements last week. On Monday 19th May, ambassadors and volunteers for the charity gathered in Bradford at the site of the city’s weekly mobile kitchen, and welcomed in the newest addition to the team - not a person, but a van. The new mobile kitchen comes with state-of-the-art equipment which makes transporting the food easier whilst also improving the ease of preparing the meals on-site. Founder and board member, Osman Gondal, says it was always the plan to bring in the new van and was delighted to see it in action for the first time last week. He said: “The new van really encompasses the spirit of InTouch in that it is about the community. “The community has fundraised for this, businesses have sponsored it and professionals have come forward and got involved with the construction side of it.” He added: “For the volunteers

Tens of people came down from across the city to experience the new service, which has been launched in partnership with ADLA
Pharmaceuticals, and get a taste of Bradford’s fastest growing mobile soup kitchen. Mr Gondal added: “The expansion into Leeds has been brilliant, working with ADLA Pharmaceuticals. “We are again hoping to be successful in replicating what has been done in Bradford, in Leeds, and trying to build on that community spirit. “As a central team here in Bradford, we have managed to cover some sponsorship and so have ADLA so we have a guaranteed 12 to 16 weeks of sponsor money for food.”
Three young budding filmmakers in Leeds are set to have their work displayed on BBC’s Fresh site starting this month. INNOCENT: Paragon Pizza owner, Razaul Karim, was one of the three members of staff who were searched by police following the hoax call
Leeds pair set for court date after ‘cruel prank’
Hoax callers charged By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Two men from Leeds have been charged over terrorism hoax calls which occurred last year resulting in a North Yorkshire town being locked down by armed police. The centre of Knaresborough was cordoned off by armed police on the 16th October after they received a number of phone calls reporting an ‘immediate
threat to members of the public’ at the Paragon Pizza takeaway in High Street. Dozens of officers, armed with submachine guns and baton round launchers arrived at the scene to detain two staff members outside the establishment, whilst a third was arrested moments later. After a search of the premises and the individuals, the report was labelled as a ‘cruel prank’ which had been targeted at the completely innocent owner and his staff.
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old man from the Chapeltown area of Leeds was charged earlier this week with three offences of communicating a bomb hoax, whilst a 22-year-old man, also from the Chapeltown area, was charged with perverting the course of justice and making a false statement to obtain insurance. Speaking about the way the North Yorkshire Police addressed the situation, a statement on the authority’s behalf, released soon after the incident, read: “…Our prime concern during the incident was to ensure the safety of members of the public. As a result, we ensured a rapid police response to the town centre.” Both men, being charged with the case, are due to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court in June.
Thumb severed in attempted robbery
Detectives investigating an attempted robbery in Bradford, in which a man had part of his thumb severed, are calling on the local community to come forward with information. The man suffered the lifechanging injury in an altercation with a group of four men at a convenience store in Wibsey Park Avenue, Wibsey, shortly after 10.45pm on Wednesday 21st May. He was taken to hospital for emergency surgery, where he remained in a stable condition. Police have also issued CCTV images of the suspects thought to be involved in the incident.
The suspects, thought to be a group of Asian males in their late teens, were last seen running off towards Farfield Avenue. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Nicholson, said: “This was a nasty incident, and it has left the victim with an injury which potentially threatens his livelihood. “This was an innocent man who was trying to stop his premises from being robbed. “No one should have to suffer such injuries protecting their property, and that is why I am calling on the local community to come forward with any information they might have.
WANTED: The group of men were pictured on CCTV and the public are being asked to help identify the individuals
“Somebody will know who is responsible for this and I would urge them to contact police on 101, or if they would prefer, to give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

Couple’s wedding warning ‘We don’t want anybody to experience the service that we have had’ WARNING: Vipul Ladwa and his wife, Jaspreet Kaur Ladwa, want couples to be cautious when selecting their wedding photographer after a bad experience left them with no photos from their civil ceremony
www.asianexpress.co.uk
May 2014 - 4th Edition
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, yet a couple’s wedding plans were soon sent into disarray after a fallout with their photographer led to court appearances and no footage from their big day. Now, Vipul Ladwa and his wife, Jaspreet Kaur Ladwa, are warning other couple’s to beware when booking photographers as wedding season approaches once again. “Nobody should be put through the ordeal we have been through at that time in their lives,” Mrs Ladwa said. “We have no professional photos or footage from our civil ceremony and hopefully by telling others our story, it won’t happen again.” The West-Midlands couple, both 27-years-old, were married more than two years ago yet have been caught up in a legal battle since then, trying to retrieve photos and video from their special day. After booking a local photographer to capture the most important moments from their civil ceremony, and the Indian wedding which followed a few weeks later, Mr and Mrs Ladwa say they were extremely happy. The owner of the company, who cannot be named, had done the photography of Jaspreet’s parents around 30 years ago and so they were convinced that the right choice had been made. “Ever since I was a little girl I had always wanted them to do my wedding photos,” Mrs Ladwa said. “It had such a sentimental feel to it and he was so nice at the start that everything just seemed so right. “We agreed a verbal contract right there and then and he said we didn’t even have to sign anything which was another bonus.” Yet, as the couple began to plan their wedding’s finer details, they allege that the professionalism of their chosen photographer began to deteriorate. Terms of the contract were supposedly changed from initial proposals, reducing the number of photos and length of video available, yet both parties remained happy with the outcome. The photographer took the photos and video on the day of the civil ceremony as planned yet Mrs Ladwa states that she believed he was ‘rude’ and ‘unprofessional’ when talking to a family friend also taking photos. She said: “He was very aggressive towards one of our family friends who was taking pictures on the day. “He seemed to think that we would be going over the limit of photos and that is why our friend was doing pictures but they wouldn’t have been anywhere near the quality of a professional. “Five days after the
MARRIED: Vipul and Jaspreet managed to find a photographer at the last minute for their Indian wedding which took place soon after the initial civil ceremony
ceremony we went down to the business to select the 150 photos we wanted for our album from more than 1,000 taken on the day. “It took us more than half a day to do it but we were happy enough to do so, and got told they would be ready in four to six weeks.” Two weeks before the next event, the Indian wedding, Mrs Ladwa states that she received a phone call from the photographer ‘demanding money’ and said she was told she would have to select her photos again. After doing so, the West Midlands resident says she then began to get stressed about the wedding day. “It was just a distraction we did not need at that time,” she said. “A couple of days later he phoned again to demand the money. He shouted down the phone at my mother and hung up on her, then wouldn’t answer any of our calls. “It was all so upsetting that I didn’t feel I could see him on my wedding day so we asked him to cancel the photography for the
Indian wedding and we would just pay him for the civil ceremony footage, which must have been 90 per cent complete by that stage.” The couple booked a separate photographer for the Indian wedding yet explained how further problems developed shortly after. Mrs Ladwa added: “A fortnight after our Indian wedding, we were told that our [initial photographer] was attempting to sue us for 75per cent of a cancellation fee as well as the full cost of the Indian wedding photo-shoot. “We were taken to court where he was told he had no claim and was forced to pay our court fees and give our deposit back. “We still offered to pay him the full amount for the photos and video which he had captured from our ceremony but he still won’t do it.” Vipul and Jaspreet do have photos and video from their Indian wedding, which they say they now ‘cherish even more’, and hope to one day be reunited with their civil ceremony footage.

Roll out of initiative which sees police officers wearing cameras whilst on the job
‘Police, camera, action’ … literally!
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Police officers across West Yorkshire are to be fitted with smartphone-sized wearable cameras when called out to incidents in an effort to increase transparency and improve public confidence. The move announced by West Yorkshire Police is part of a research project with Cambridge University and will see 160 body-worn cameras used by a number of different frontline response officers. Head cameras are already used on occasion by officers investigating domestic violence but the new technology, which will be in place from this month, will be used much more widely. Bosses will assess how well the cameras work in providing data and evidence to potentially be used in
court before deciding whether to introduce the devices on a permanent basis around the county. West Yorkshire Police officers will also be told to contact their control room whenever they carry out a ‘stop and search’, after concerns were raised by young people and members of minority communities. Information about the search provided by the officer will be put directly onto a computer system, meaning information about the incident is available to be scrutinised later. Chief Constable Mark Gilmore said the change would “enhance openness and accountability” and also “avoid lengthy form filling at a scene and reduces inconvenience to the public and officers”.

A tall challenge
PRAYER: The group of 30 climbers were all members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association and gave a prayer for Britain at the top of each peak
Trekkers scale mountains in fundraising mission A team of determined Muslims pulled on their walking boots and headed to the mountains last weekend as they aimed to raise thousands of pounds for charity. 30 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) scaled the UK’s three highest peaks in an attempt to raise £7,500 for the British Red Cross. The members pushed their limits to the max as they hiked up Scaffell Pike, in England, Ben Nevis, in Scotland, and Mount Snowden, in Wales, in under 33 hours. The group said they were hoping to spread the message of peace by completing the walk whilst also dismissing false stereotypes that have been ‘given to Muslims across
the UK’. Dr Aziz Hafiz, Chairman and leader of the Three Peak Challenge said the group had been training for a long time before last weekend and was proud to be helping out such a worthy cause. “We do a lot of work with the British Red Cross and are honoured to be raising money for such a fantastic charity,” he said. “At the peak of each mountain we all offered a prayer of peace to pray for Great Britain and the amazing British Nation. “Some people unfortunately assume that there is a conflict between being Muslim and British. For us, as well as the other 7,500 young British Muslims who make up AMYA, it is our faith that drives us to love this great
country and its people so much.” This is the third year running that the
AMYA team has raised money for charity through similar initiatives. The last two hikes saw trekkers raise more than £40,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and The British Heart Foundation by scaling The Mont Blanc Range in the French Alps, whilst runs and CLIMB: Local youth leader cycle events have for AMYA Huddersfield, Kamal also been held in Aftab, enjoys a cup of tea at the recent months. summit of England’s highest mountain, Scaffell Pike

Syria fraud investigation including Huddersfield and Dewsbury men sees three more arrests Try the tri-fit day
Police have arrested three more people in connection with a charity fraud involving thousands of pounds intended to help people in Syria. The arrests take the total to twelve, including a 43-year-old from Huddersfield and a 35year-old man from Dewsbury. The three men aged 39, 41 and 42, were arrested in Derby on behalf of Kent Police after more than £45,000 was seized at the Port of Dover on 23rd December, 2012. They were all subsequently bailed until September. Addresses across the UK were raided during an early morning operation after £31,816 and £6,413 were seized at Dover in December 2012. The cash, which had come from four UK charities, was taken by police who believed it could be used for criminal or terrorist activities. Det Chief Supt Chris Hogben said: “We have now arrested 12 men across the

Spenborough Pool will be hosting a day of fitness and encouragement to help people get into Triathlon shape on 15th June. And the Tri Fit Day will also feature an inspirational talk by one-time couch potato Andy Holgate the Iron Man athlete who now authors books on fitness. People who may have been thinking about dipping a toe back into the water, testing out those rusty bike skills, or who want a bit of support to swim more effectively in order to get fit are invited to come along to the event which will feature workshops led by expert coaches. Participants will need to bring their own cycles but it may be possible to arrange one to use if you contact well in advance.

Wakefield Council is working with partners to help residents heat their homes more efficiently. The Glow Warm Wakefield scheme runs in partnership with Keepmoat aiming to help residents in the district to make their homes warmer, healthier and cheaper to heat and could waste up to £600 a year on energy bills. It applies to both residents who own their own home or rent from a private landlord who may be eligible for a heavily discounted new boiler and cavity wall or loft insulation. People on benefits could even get these home improvements for free.

Money bureau boss jailed for laundering over £100m Thillianathan Kumarathas of Eastcote Lane, Harrow, Middlesex, was the owner of the bureaux de change
A bureaux de change owner and two of his employees have been jailed for laundering over £100 million of criminal cash through his business. Thillianathan Kumarathas, 58, and Ramanathan Thayaparan, 42, recruited mutual friend, Dinesh Kumar Anandan, 34, to help launder dirty money through Kumarathas’s two bureaux in Victoria, London. The men would receive the “dirty” money from criminal gangs, who mixed with unsuspecting tourists when they brought bags of cash to the bureaux de change. The money was exchanged for €500 notes which could be easily concealed. The defendants took a percentage of the cash and used their illegal profit to buy several properties in the UK, France and India, and paid for private schooling for their children. David Margree, Assistant Director, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said: “This was a calculated attempt to make a dishonest living and help organised criminals go undetected by exchanging the

money they got from criminal activity. These sentences send out a very clear message that money laundering is a serious crime and will not be tolerated.” Assets restrained and subject to confiscation action include: vehicles, restaurants, supermarkets, cash and funds held in bank accounts, business and residential properties. Around £84,000 in cash was seized during searches of business and residential premises. Thillianathan Kumarathas from Harrow, Middlesex, is the owner of the business and was sentenced to nine years in prison. Ramanathan Thayaparan also from Harrow, Middlesex, was sentenced to five years in prison and Dinesh Kumar Anandan from Edmonton, London, was sentenced to two years in prison.

UPDATE: ‘We could have died’
Family continue to question lack of support
DAMAGE: The Samsung S4’s case was burnt whilst the charging cable had begun to almost melt inside the phone which could have led to the battery setting on fire
www.asianexpress.co.uk
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A family in Leeds, who were seeking compensation after a Samsung mobile charger began burning through the phone case during the night, say they are ‘upset’ at the lack of communication they are receiving. 30-year-old Roundhay resident, Sanjay Thukral, spoke last week to the Asian Express about the time he awoke to the smell of burning electrics coming from his phone. At the time, Mr Thukral was working a morning shift and so had his alarm set for 4.30am. As it went off, he said he instantly smelt the burning scent and upon inspection of his Samsung S4, he noticed the charger had begun to melt in the phone. An official statement from Samsung, in regards to Mr Thukral’s case, said: “Samsung has investigated this situation and worked with Mr Thukral to come to a resolution. “We can confirm that the unit in question has been repaired and sent back to Mr Thukral and a subsequent offer has been made to refund him for the damaged flip case.” Yet, after being offered £34.99 in compensation, Mr Thukral, who lives with eight members from four generations of the same family, aged between one and 71, says it is not enough for the mental strain he has been forced to endure. He said: “I was disgusted to be honest. What I went through meant nothing to them because they are such a big company and at the end
of the day we are just another number to them. “I have looked for legal advice but because nothing actually physically hurt me no solicitor has wanted to get involved and because Samsung is so big it just seems too much to ask. “There may not have been any physical damage but mentally, the amount of stress we are still going through today, because of their faulty products, is not fair.” Mr Thukral added that he had issued the communication company with a copy of a doctor’s note as requested but was still turned away. “They asked me for an official note from my doctor which I sent over,” he explains. “However, after that they told me I didn’t have a case for compensation. “Now I just don’t know where I am at the moment. It is just a waiting game with them.” Ian Bitcon, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Area Manager for Fire Safety, said: “We were not called to a fire in this particular instance so cannot comment on this case specifically. However, there are general safety tips we can give in relation to chargers. “We would always reinforce the importance of using a charger that is supplied with an item, never using one which may be counterfeit and always ensuring that they are switched off at night.” A house fire, which killed five members from three generations of one family in Sheffield earlier this month, is reportedly believed to have been started due to a faulty phone charger.

Business news Iconic ArcelorMittal Orbit pledges support for students By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
ArcelorMittal – the world’s leading steel and mining company – has made a major donation to Birkbeck, University of London, to sponsor students in east London and widen access to higher education. Birkbeck, known as London’s evening university, exists to provide educational opportunities to busy Londoners, including those who have missed out on conventional higher education. As part of the threeyear ‘Learning Ladder’ gift, the company will pay for four undergraduate student bursaries, tuition fees for one postgraduate student, and support for a student researching a PhD in crystallography – the study of atomic and molecular structures, such as steel. The funding is the first in a string of local community initiatives planned by the company throughout 2014. It is part of a programme aimed at contributing to the wider regeneration effort, symbolised by the distinctive 114.5m ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. To qualify for the funds, applicants are required to receive a household income of less than £25,000 and reside in east London. The partnership has
been forged with Birkbeck, which is committed to widening access to higher education in east London. In November last year Birkbeck and the University of East London opened University Square Stratford – a £33m stateof-the-art shared campus in Stratford, east London, which was built on land provided by the London Borough of Newham. Tricia King, Pro-ViceMaster Strategic Engagement and Recruitment at Birkbeck, said: “Birkbeck is very grateful for this funding as it will provide opportunities for people otherwise unable to study because of financial constraints. ArcelorMittal’s support will help the College pursue its goal of meeting the growing aspirations of the people of east London.” Ian Louden, Head of Brand at ArcelorMittal, said: “We want the striking ArcelorMittal Orbit to be seen not just as a memory of an amazing Olympic Games but also as a beacon for the regeneration of East London which was an inherent part of London’s bid to the International Olympic Committee. Our support for low-income, locally-based students at the Stratford campus of Birkbeck University of London is part of our community engagement programme focussed on this regeneration objective.”

Big Brother is watching I n the case of Uppal –v- Endemol UK Ltd and others, the Claimant, a former Miss India UK and housemate in the 2012 series of Big Brother, issued defamation proceedings following two broadcasts of Big Brother. The Defendants in the case are the producer of Big Brother (Endemol), the broadcaster of Big Brother (Channel 5) and Mr Conor McIntyre, a fellow housemate of the Claimant on Big Brother. The Claimant sought damages for libel, for breach of duty of care owed by Endemol and Channel 5 to the Claimant, and for breach of contract against Endemol. The claim arose in respect of two broadcasts of Big Brother. The first broadcast contained a rap by Mr McIntyre and the second broadcast contained comments by another housemate, for which they had been reprimanded by Big Brother. The Claimant alleged that the words voiced in both broadcasts were defamatory because they had the following meanings: • The Claimant had below average intelligence • Alternatively that the Claimant was in some way socially or intellectually inferior • The Claimant was sexually promiscuous • The Claimant was in some way socially or intellectually inferior to the other housemates because she was of Indian origin or descent In response to the claim, the Defendants made an application for a
ruling that those words complained of were incapable of bearing such meanings or of being defamatory of the Claimant. The Defendant’s Application for Summary Judgment was successful it was found that Endemol and Channel 5 were entitled to such a ruling on the defamation claim against the Claimant, and the Claimant’s claim for defamation was dismissed. The Defendants were successful as regards to the first broadcast because it was held that any reasonable viewer would have understood that the person whose reputation might have been adversely affected by the ‘rap’ was the person who made up the rap, and not the Claimant. It was found that instead of being defamatory of the Claimant, the use of the words were vile abuse. As to the second broadcast, which contained offensive racial stereotyping conduct which was reprimanded by Big Brother - that was held to have been a reflection on the offending housemate, but it had not been a reflection on the Claimant. The case is a reminder of the threshold of seriousness that must be met before words are found to be capable of bearing a defamatory meaning. The case also highlights that the Courts draw an important distinction between words of discourtesy and those words that are capable of bearing defamatory meanings. We at Blacks have experience in handling defamation claims and breach of contract claims.

More hours, more shopping A
decision made by Bradford Council last week has granted one of the city’s top shopping destinations planning permission to operate in extended hours. Bradford Bazaar had previously had restrictions placed on Sunday openings due to possible disruption to
local residents, but following consultation with all concerned parties, an agreement was reached which was amenable to everyone. The new ruling will allow the premises to stay open until 8pm every Sunday and Bank holiday, and until 10pm on the two days preceding each Eid. Bradford Bazaar owner and
Record Loss Jet Airways, part-owned by Abu Dhabi's Etihad, said on Tuesday it would be taking ‘tough’ measures to reshape the airline and return to profitability, after reporting a record quarterly loss. Airlines in India have been weighed down by one of the most expensive jet fuel prices in the region, while slower economic expansion has curbed the growth in passengers. Jet, the second largest Indian carrier by domestic market share, said on Tuesday that standalone net loss was approximately £217m for its fiscal fourth-quarter to end-March, compared with a loss of £50m a year

director, Jasvinder Singh, said: “I am delighted that the Bazaar can now open longer on what is our busiest day of the week. “It was painful to watch customers turning away on a Sunday because we had to put the shutters down but now that will soon become a distant memory”. General Manager, Adrian

Jet said it had approved details of a three-year business plan on Tuesday as it strives to return to profitability. The carrier, in which Etihad bought a 24 percent stake last year, is writing down ‘overvalued’ non-cash assets to clean up its balance sheet, it said. “We need to take stringent measures,” Jet Chairman, Naresh Goyal, said in a statement. “There can be no short-term solutions. India appoint new Finance Minister India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi named Arun Jaitley as finance minister on Tuesday, tasking his close party colleague with reviving investment in an economy that has been growing at its slowest rate in a decade. Jaitley, 61, will also lead the defence ministry as well as corporate affairs, the government said in a statement on Modi's cabinet that was sworn in on Monday. Modi campaigned on a promise to cut bureaucratic sloth and fight corruption. Analysts say Modi's huge election victory gives him the mandate to advance reforms that stalled under the previous Congress-led, scandal-ridden administration of his prececessor, Manmohan Singh. One of the top corporate lawyers in the country, Jaitley served as a commerce minister in a previous government of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Modi named BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj as foreign minister. The Hindu nationalist BJP has long advocated tough positions on national security and Pakistan, in particular.

of life, and I agree with all of that. It means things like trying to learn English.” Mr Javid suggested that immigrants already wellestablished in the UK also needed to take greater responsibility for integrating with the rest of society. “I know people myself, I have met people who have been in Britain for over 50 years and they still can't speak English,” he said. “I think it's perfectly reasonable for British people to say, look, if you're going to settle in Britain and make it your home, you should learn the language of the country and you should

The son of a bus driver, who left Pakistan for Rochdale, had been a senior managing director at Deutsche Bank in charge of trading operations in Asia until 2009, where he had been earning an estimated £3m a year. Mr Javid is tipped as a Tory leader of the future and has said he sees his Muslim faith as no barrier to one day taking the top spot.
Female pigs can recognise the sex of sperm and influence the sex of their offspring
Female pigs' reproductive systems recognise whether a sperm will produce a boy or a girl before it reaches and fertilises the egg, and their oviduct (fallopian tubes) change in response, according to new research from the University of Sheffield and University of Murcia. Scientists think this may be a way females unconsciously influence the sex of their offspring. The findings, reported in the open access journal BMC Genomics, show that different genes are active in female pigs' reproductive system cells in experimental conditions when all X (female) or all Y (male) sperm are present. Although in nature the ratio would normally be 50:50, this suggests females might be able to change the environment of the oviduct to favor one sex over the other, giving
that sperm a better chance of winning the race to the egg. Studies of humans and animals have shown that the sex ratio of offspring can be affected by factors such as the age of the mother, or environmental factors like famines and wars. How and when this happens is unclear. The international research team from the University of Sheffield and University of Murcia wanted to discover if the sex ratio is influenced in the early stages, before the sperm have even fertilised the egg. To find out whether females can differentiate between female and male sperm, they inseminated female pigs with sperm that was either all X or all Y. They then analysed the pig oviduct gene expression - the genes that were switched on in the oviduct cells. They found that 501 genes consistently produced proteins in
differing amounts depending on whether X or Y sperm was present. Researchers are still not sure why this ability has evolved, but they speculate that if females can recognise the sex of sperm and change in response, they might be able to create an environment that favors boys or girls. This could explain how females unconsciously influence the sex ratio of their offspring, but more studies are needed to confirm this. Lead author Professor Alireza Fazeli from the Department of Human Metabolism at the University of Sheffield said: "What this shows is that mothers are able to differentiate between the sperm that makes boys and girls. That on its own is amazing. It's also of great scientific and evolutionary importance. If we understand how they can do that, this can revolutionise the field."

Baby Khan arrives Amir and Faryal delighted at birth of baby girl
Amir Khan and his wife Faryal Makhdoom were celebrating earlier this week after the couple became parents for the first time. The British boxing star announced the news via Twitter on Friday 23rd May, tweeting a picture of himself and his baby girl, Lamysah, in the early hours of the morning. Lamysah, meaning ‘soft to touch’, was born at 4.05am and the former lightweight champion expressed his delight via the social network site. He wrote: “Faryal and I are delighted to announce the birth our first child Lamysa Khan everyone doing very well, thank you for all your wishes.” The ‘H’ was later added to the end of Lamysah’s name to make it the right spelling from an Islamic standpoint. Faryal also wrote via her Twitter account: “@AmirKingKhan & I are Blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Lamysah Khan. Thank you all for your kind messages xxx” Khan and his wife met whilst Faryal was a political science student in New York and the couple got engaged in 2012. In June 2013, they wed in the WaldorfAstoria Hotel, New York, before returning to the UK for another ceremony in Bolton, with more than 4,000 guests in attendance. This latest news was cause for celebration for the Khan family with the 28-year-old boxer saying he is planning on celebrating by purchasing a new sports car. When questioned about the baby’s travel arrangements, Khan added: “Don't worry the wife and baby have the Range Rover. Baby seat fits in haha.”
Statistics released last week suggest that the number of students coming to Britain to study other Commonwealth from countries has fallen by more than 60 per cent over the past three years. arriving from Academics countries, such as Pakistan and India, have slumped from an estimated 100,000 to 35,000 according to the latest immigration report published last week. The official report, issued by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) highlights the steep decline, with many students seeming to opt for studies in the US and Australia rather than in the UK. UK University bodies and critics of the country's immigration policy have been warning the UK government over toughening visa policies driving overseas students, who pay much higher fees, to alternate locations. Most recently, a House of Lords committee had accused the government of creating an unwelcoming atmosphere for
students from international countries like India. “It is important to note that both India and China are important markets for UK universities seeking to attract international students they're getting the cold shoulder and heading elsewhere,” the Lords Science and Technology Committee said in a report last month. “The rules are seen as too complex and subject to endless changes, the visa costs are not competitive, and the rules relating to work after study are so limiting that prospective students are heading to the US, Australia, Canada and elsewhere.” The official migration figures, released on the day the UK is voting in its European Union elections, also show a rise in the arrival of EU citizens to the UK in the year to December 2013. The ONS found that 201,000 EU citizens came into the UK as longterm immigrants, seen as a statistically significant increase of 43,000 over the previous year.

£145,000 has a nice ring to it
Goodbye Griffin
A unique golden ring belonging to Mysore's 18th century legendary ruler, Tipu Sultan, has been sold for a whopping £145,000 at an auction in the UK, 10 times more than its estimated price. Auction house Christie's said that the 41.2 gram ring was sold to an undisclosed bidder at the auction in central London, amid criticism from heritage groups. The ring was allegedly taken from the slain body of Tipu Sultan at the end of the 1799 Srirangappattinam battle against the British East India Company's forces. “It is surprising that a ring bearing the name of a Hindu god would have been worn by the great Muslim warrior,” the auction listing noted. Earlier this month, Professor S Settar, from India's National Institute of Advanced Studies, had warned that the ring might be hidden from public view if it was sold to a private bidder, the report said. Settar urged the Indian government to ‘make use of all available avenues, legal and diplomatic, to recover the ring’.

OUT: British National Party leader, Nick Griffin, has been ejected from the European Parliament after losing his seat as an MEP
BNP leader loses European seat
The United Kingdom may still be part of the European Parliament, whilst the wait continues for an upcoming referendum, yet one man who will no longer be associated with the continental organisation is the British National Party’s very own, Nick Griffin. The party leader lost his place as an MEP, four years after winning two seats in the
European Parliament. Many voters seem to have switched from the right-winged group to the rapidly growing UKIP party, which made huge gains at the recent local elections. After six months on taxpayerfunded severance pay, Mr Griffin said he intended to campaign in the region once more and slammed Nigel Farage’s party for being too soft. “I've lost count of the number I've spoken to who say, ‘We really like the BNP but we are voting UKIP because there is more
chance they will stop immigration and send them all home’,” he told Sky News. “As there is not a hope in hell of that, people are going to be very disappointed when they find out what UKIP really stands for and that huge vote is going to come back to us. “Most of the voters are what the liberal elite call ‘racist’ - they want immigration stopped for good, the whole lot of them. They think they are going to get that with UKIP. They are not.” As an outgoing MEP Mr Griffin will still receive a wage for the next six months and he says he
hopes to use these funds with the BNP to campaign for support by setting up food banks exclusively for ‘our people’. Asked whether the food banks would be open to black and Asian people, he added: “Our food banks are there for our own people. Do you know how many charities there are for the English in Britain? Just one. “There are thousands for immigrants so I think their own charities can look after them, there are mosques that can look after them, I'm sure Labour councils will look after them.”

‘Same as Putin Hitler’ likened to a ‘Nazi’ by British Royal

Russia’s strong-handed approach in the takeover of Ukraine’s Crimean Region has been widely condemned and it seems the British Royal Family also have their criticisms of Vladimir Putin’s tactics. The heir to the British throne, Prince Charles got himself into the media spotlight earlier this week after he likened the actions of Putin to them of Adolf Hitler. The Prince was on a trip to Canada when the remarks were made during a private conversation with a Jewish woman who had fled Poland during World War Two. Prince Charles is believed to have told her, according to the Daily Mail newspaper, that in Ukraine ‘Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler’. Backlash to the comments were almost instant from the Russian government who demanded an explanation, yet a British Foreign Office representative said it had told a senior Russian official in London on Thursday that it would not comment on reports of private conversations. The 65-year-old’s remarks were described by a Royal source as
‘well-intentioned’ and not meant to be made public. However, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry seemed less convinced as he told a news conference: “If these words were truly spoken, then, without doubt, they do not reflect well on the future British monarch. “We view the use of the Western press by members of the British Royal Family to spread the propaganda campaign against Russia on a pressing issue - that is, the situation in Ukraine - as unacceptable, outrageous and low.” Putin, a former KGB spy who has repeatedly spoken about the sacrifices of what Russians call the Great Patriotic War, lost a brother in the Nazi siege of Leningrad. The Soviet Union lost more than 20 million people in the war and the victory over Nazi Germany is celebrated across Russia as a national triumph. It is not the first time that the man destined to be king has taken British politicians and royal watchers by surprise. In a private diary that was leaked, he once described the Chinese Communist leadership as ‘appalling old waxworks’.

Depression top cause of illness in teens Depression is the top global cause of illness and disability for adolescents, with suicide the third-biggest cause of death, the World Health Organisation said this week. The finding is in a new report by the UN agency, which has pulled together a wealth of published evidence with direct consultations with 10 to 19-year-olds around the world to assess the health issues that affect them. "The world has not paid enough attention to the health of adolescents," says Flavia Bustreo, head of the WHO's family, women and children's health division. Some studies show that half of all people who develop mental disorders have their first symptoms by the age of 14, said the report. "If adolescents with mental health problems get the care they need, this can prevent deaths and avoid suffering throughout life," it said. The study looked at a broad range of issues, including tobacco, alcohol and drug use, HIV, injuries, mental health, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and violence. Traffic injuries were the number two cause of illness and disability, behind depression, with boys three times more likely to die than girls. WHO said it was crucial for countries to reduce the risk by increasing access to reliable and safe public transport, improve road safety regulations such as alcohol and speed limits, establish safe pedestrian areas around schools and graduated licensing schemes where drivers' privileges are phased in over time.
Worldwide, an estimated 1.3 million adolescents died in 2012, it said. The top three causes of death globally were road traffic injuries, HIV/AIDS, and suicide. HIV was the second cause of deaths in adolescents globally, WHO said, with estimates suggesting the number of HIVrelated deaths among adolescents was rising. This was predominantly in Africa, at a time when HIV-related deaths were decreasing in all other population groups. "We must not let up on efforts to promote and safeguard the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents, including HIV," said WHO scientist Jane Ferguson, lead author of the report. For adolescent girls alone, the secondbiggest killer after suicide was complications during childbirth. That was despite major progress on that front, WHO said, with death-rates plummeting since 2000 -- by 57 percent in Asia, 50 percent in the Middle East and 37 percent in Africa. Other infectious disease also remained major killers, despite marked successes such as a 90-percent decline in death and disability from measles in Africa over the past decade, thanks to childhood vaccination. Common infectious diseases that have been a focus for action in young children were among the hardest-hitting. For example, diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections ranked second and fourth among causes of death in 10 to 14-year-olds. Combined with meningitis, these conditions accounted for 18 percent of all deaths in this age group, little changed from 2000, WHO said.

Sex-based abortions banned
The UK government has issued fresh guidelines to close a legal loophole that allowed sex-based abortions amid reports that several infant girls were ‘missing’ in certain ethnic communities who have a cultural preference to a male child. The updated department of health guidance issued on Friday warns that doctors who carry out abortions based on the sex of an unborn baby and pre-sign abortion forms are breaking the law. Abortion clinics in Britain will also be required to explicitly recognize that gender-based abortions are illegal as part of their licence conditions. A child birth data analysis in Britain by the Independent newspaper in January had revealed that mothers born in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were most likely to opt for gender-based abortions, while those born in India and Nepal were also singled out as a category likely to opt for such abortions.

Honorary Degree One of India’s former presidents was honoured earlier this week at a Scottish university and awarded an honorary degree for his close ties to the educational establishment. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who was president of the world’s second most populous country between 2002 and 2007, received the award from Edinburgh University Principal, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea. It recognised Dr Kalam’s outstanding contribution to science and technology, and his commitment to helping transform India into a developed nation by 2020. Dr Kalam studied physics at the St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai. He is regarded as the father of his country's space programme and in recent years has campaigned to highlight the plight of India's rural poor, advocating the use of technology to address social and economic inequalities. Professor O’Shea commented, as he handed over the degree: “It is a privilege to welcome Dr Kalam to Edinburgh and to present him with an honorary degree. “It recognises his extraordinary work as a scientist, as a figurehead for his country and for working to tackle rural poverty and injustice over many years.” Dr Kalam also provided the keynote address at the inaugural conference of the University's Edinburgh India Institute. The Institute will help coordinate the work of Edinburgh academics who are working with a wide range of partners across India. The two-day event saw a series of presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities between staff and students from Edinburgh, partners from across India, and from other Scottish and UK stakeholders.

After pig DNA uproar, the chocolatiers says they are working to ensure products are halal-compliant
GIANT: British owned Cadbury is the world's second largest confectionery brand after Wrigley's
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
After a huge uproar by Muslim groups in Malaysia for selling porcine-tainted chocolates, Cadbury Malaysia - part of the British multinational owned by Mondelez International has said that it remains committed to ensuring that all its products are compliant with existing halal guidelines. Two of it’s products, namely the Cadbury Dairy Milk hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk roast almond products, have been hurriedly taken off the shelves by the company. They were found tainted with porcine DNA by the Health Ministry on Saturday May 25th. More than 20 Malay-Muslim groups called for a nationwide boycott on all Cadbury products, saying that a holy war (Jihad) needs to be waged against the confectionary giant for attempting to “weaken” Muslims in Malaysia. Many have called for the Cabdury factory to be shut down. At a news conference, the groups which include the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), Perkasa, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Darul Islah Malaysia (Perkid), Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and the Halal Muslim Entrepreneurs’ Association (Puhm) claimed that Cadbury had “crossed the line” by selling its porcinetainted chocolates, and that swift action was needed. Cadbury’s head of corporate affairs in Malaysia, Raja Zalina Raja Safran, said in a three paragraph statement that the company has received and heard the Muslim community’s call for a “resolution” on the matter. “For now, we are focusing our efforts and resources on the ongoing investigation. We are working very closely with Jakim (the Malaysian Islamic Development Department) to ensure that our products are compliant with halal guidelines. “Jakim have also commented that they will be conducting their own tests on our products and will announce the results as soon as they become available,” the statement read. PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan said that they have begun discussing matters with Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) and other Malay NGOs on possible legal action. In an earlier statement, the company said it was informed that samples of its Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and the Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond that had been sent to the ministry had “tested positive for traces of porcine DNA”. The Muslim groups also said today they will be lodging a police report against Cadbury “soon”, and called on all Muslims nationwide to unite in efforts to shut down the company’s operations in Malaysia. Jakim has already suspended the halal certification of the two porcine-tainted Cadbury chocolate products. Mondelez International UK, which owns the Cadbury brand reassured that this contamination has not affected Britain. Speaking to the Asian Express Corporate Affairs spokesperson Tony Bilsborough, reassured consumers that “the matter in Malaysia has not effected the brand’s ingredients integrity whatsoever in the UK”.

The naked truth
Secret Service police on Friday arrested a man who stripped naked outside the White House fence and fought with officers. A Secret Service spokesman identified the man as Michel Bechard and said he was charged with assault and indecent exposure. Bechard had approached uniformed Secret Service officers at a White House security checkpoint at about 3pm and then ‘proceeded to get fully undressed,’ the spokesman said. Officers subdued the man, covered him and sent him to a
hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered in the tussle. A reporter for the Daily Caller website, who was entering the White House through the same checkpoint, said the man had told the Secret Service officers he had a 3 p.m. appointment with President Barack Obama and presented his identification. The reporter said the ID was rejected because it was from a foreign country and the man then began undressing while insisting that he had to keep his appointment with Obama.
Fisherman let free
In a goodwill gesture, Pakistan, on Sunday, freed 151 Indian fishermen, a day ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Ministerdesignate Narendra Modi. Authorities released 59 Indian fishermen from the Malir jail in Karachi and another 92 from Nara jail in Hyderabad in Sindh province. Syed Nazir Hussain, the superintendent of the Malir
jail in Karachi, told reporters that the Indian prisoners were released on written directives of the interior and foreign ministries. “Most of these prisoners are poor Indian fishermen who were arrested and brought here for trespassing into Pakistani territorial waters,” he said. The prisoners were taken in an air-conditioned bus from Karachi to Wagah border in Lahore from where they will be handed over to Indian authorities.
Deadly Dentist A grandmother in the US reportedly died after a dentist attempted to extract a large number of teeth at once despite being begged to stop by the client. 64-year-old Judy Gan, a retired librarian from Connecticut, was having 20 teeth extracted together with implant and grafts when she became unresponsive on 17th February. Just one hour after the appointment she was taken to hospital but died upon arrival. Dr Rashmi Patel, who owns the dental practice in the Enfield area of the state, is accused of not responding when his patient’s oxygen levels dropped dangerously low and improperly extracting the teeth in a single visit. He is also alleged to have ignored his two dental assistants’ pleas to call 911 after Ms Gan became unresponsive. The malpractice was first highlighted after an anonymous tip to the

Dr Gary Pearl, who was asked to review the case by the state's Department of Public Health, wrote in his case review: “It's my belief

Embezzlement charges Guilty Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is also being re-trialled for deaths of protestors during mass protests against him
Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gets a second conviction since he was pushed from power in 2011 and sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling public funds. The verdict, which may be appealed, comes as Mubarak, 86, is being retried in a separate case linked to the death of protesters during the mass uprising that toppled him. An earlier life sentence in that case was overturned, angering many who saw it as evidence that little had come of the promises of social justice and accountability that followed his removal. Mubarak, “instead of following the rule of law and

the constitution, allowed himself and his sons free rein with state funds to take whatever they want,” Judge Osama Shaheen said in a televised court hearing. The court also sentenced the former autocrat’s two sons, businessman Alaa and one time heir-apparent Gamal, to four years in prison in the case, which is linked to funds allocated to refurbish presidential palaces. The three were ordered to repay a cumulative 125.8 million Egyptian pounds (£10.5 million) to the state. Mubarak has been held in a military hospital since the retrial. He has spent much of the past three years either in that facility or in the hospital ward of a Cairo prison. The verdicts were handed down less than a week before new presidential elections are held to Mubarak’s Islamist replace successor, Mohamed Mursi, who was ousted in July. The front-runner is Abdel-Fattah Al-Seesi, the former army chief who pushed Mursi from office, whose only opponent is leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi. Al-Seesi’s critics worry the field marshal will install a police state harsher than the one Mubarak developed during his 29-year rule. Al-Seesi has dismissed the concerns, triggered by a crackdown on Islamists and some activists.
The radical Islamic preacher, Abu Hamza, formerly based in London, could be facing life in prison after being found guilty of terrorism charges in the US. Hamza, whose fiery sermons before and after the September 11 attacks attracted extremists to his north London mosque, was convicted following a trial in New York earlier this week. The Egyptian born speaker, who was tried under the name Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, was found guilty just weeks after an al-Qaida spokesman was convicted. Hamza was accused of providing material support to terrorist organisations by enabling hostage-takers in the Yemen kidnapping to speak on a satellite phone, by sending men to establish an al-Qaida training camp in the US state of Oregon, and by sending at least one man to training camps in Afghanistan. Following a lengthy legal battle, he was extradited in 2012 from the UK, where he led the Finsbury Park Mosque in the 1990s, reportedly attended by both September 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and shoe bomber Richard Reid. Hamza denied ever having
met them. Defence attorney Joshua Dratel said the verdict was ‘not about the evidence but about a visceral reaction to the defendant’. US Attorney Preet Bharara added Hamza ‘attempted to portray himself as a preacher of faith but he was, instead, a trainer of terrorists’. For much of the past month, jurors watched videotapes and heard audio clips in which Hamza shouted to his followers, telling them non-Muslims could be treated like animals and women and children who were not Muslim could be taken captive. But they saw a gentler version of Hamza on the witness stand, one who spoke confidently in the tone of a college professor as he insisted he never engaged in acts of terrorism or aided al-Qaida. His testimony over four days was derided by Assistant US Attorney Ian McGinley, who told jurors to ignore his lies and concentrate on evidence. “Don't be fooled by his testimony,” Mr McGinley said. “Don't let the passage of time diminish what he did.” Hamza looked straight ahead as the verdict was read out at the federal court whilst sentencing is set for 8th September, when he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

‘Service with a smile’ Nepal police tackle grumpy cops
Nepal’s police force has been told to ‘cheer up’ after a rise in complaints about their rude and impolite manners. A special smile squad has been deployed across the country which will see 600 trainers tasked with the job of making the authority figures friendlier. Officially entitled ‘service with a smile’, the project hopes to connect the public with the police and help make them feel safe when there is an authoritative presence, rather than worried. In recent years, police officers have been accused of using overly brutal force and heavy-handed tactics when dealing with civil unrest. In 2013, several Maoist activists were arrested as a general strike brought Nepal to a virtual standstill amid violence aimed at disrupting the country’s elections. However, the police targeted with this latest initiative are likely to be more ‘community’ based professionals than specialising
in riots. The hundreds of trainers have been deployed in all 75 districts to train personnel, said Nepal police spokesman KC Ganesh. “It's so that they can appear to be in a friendlier, more humble and polite manner,” he said. More than 27million people currently live in the South Asian country, with up to 67,000 residents employed in the police force. Last year, the country’s police force once again
gathered international media attention after the organisation introduced yoga sessions in an attempt to ‘slim down the force’. In the eastern district of Jhapa in April 2013, more than 70 officers and constables were enrolled in a three-week yoga camp to tackle their ‘big bellies’. Senior Superintendent Keshari Raj Ghimire told the BBC: “I ordered the officers and the constables who have large bellies to join this camp.”

Anonymous Saudi man installs charity ‘street fridge’ PRAISED: Sheikh Dr Mohammad Al-Arefe brought the street fridge to the attention of his 8.7million Twitter followers
ANONYMOUS: A man who does not wish to be named installed the refrigerator in front of his house so that people could donate food to the needy
A man wishing to remain anonymous, who lives in Hail, in north-western Saudi Arabia, has come up with a wonderful way to get rid of leftover food instead of just throwing it away: he has placed a refrigerator outside his home. The unkown character, installed a refrigerator on the street in front of his house and invited neighbours to donate their extra food, so that hungry people would be spared the "shame" of begging and could come and eat. The fridge is similar to those found in shops, lit up and with glass sliding doors, but protected from the elements in its own little house, complete with tiled roof. The fridge gained international attention when renowned religious scholar Sheikh Dr Mohammad AlArefe posted about it to his 8.7 million followers on Twitter, who then retweeted it more than 5,000 times. “I have always said the people of Hail are generous,” wrote the Sheikh along with posting a picture of the refrigerator. “A man puts a fridge outside his house for leftover food; an indirect act of charity for the needy. Oh, how I love you, Hail!” Now a ripple effect has come over Twitter, with calls for more people to put fridges in front of their homes, and for mosques to do the same, especially with the fasting of Ramadan due to begin on June 28th.
Too wide for the tracks
France's national rail company SNCF said on Tuesday it had ordered 2,000 trains for an expanded regional network that are too wide for many station platforms, entailing costly repairs. A spokesman for the RFF national rail operator confirmed the error, which was first reported last week by a French magazine. “We discovered the problem a bit late, we recognise that and we accept responsibility on that score,” Christophe Piednoel told France Info radio. Construction work has already begun to
Stoned to death for ‘wrong marriage’
In an apparent 'honour killing', a 25-year-old pregnant woman was brutally beaten and stoned to death on Tuesday outside a Pakistan high court by her father and brothers for marrying the man of her choice. Police said Farzana Parveen, resident of Faisalabad, had married Mohammad Iqbal of
reconfigure station platforms to give the new trains room to pass through, but hundreds more remain to be fixed, he added. The mix-up arose when the RFF transmitted faulty dimensions for its train platforms to the SNCF, which was in charge of ordering trains as part of a broad modernisation effort, the Canard Enchaine reported. The RFF only gave the dimensions of platforms built less than 30 years ago, but most of France's 1,200 platforms were built more than 50 years ago. Repair work has already cost £60million.
Jaranwala a few months ago against the wishes of her family. The incident happened as the couple reached the court premises to record Farzana's statement to defend her husband against allegations by her family that he kidnapped her and forced her to marry him. Initially, the family members fired shots in the air and tried to snatch her from Iqbal. After failing in their attempt, nearly 20 members of her family, including her father and brothers, attacked the couple with sticks and bricks before a crowd of onlookers in front of the high court of Lahore, said police official Naseem Butt.

‘Jalte Hain Dil’
She has one of the most remarkable voices in the music industry. Her dulcet tones are enthralling and her pitch-perfect voice is the epitome of her music. Having dominated the stage for nearly a decade, the hugely-talented Japjit Kaur is all set to release her highly-anticipated debut single 'Jalte Hain Dil'. There’s plenty to enjoy about the brand new single from this highly acclaimed singer. It’s got an ultracatchy, memorable tune, it’s got great meaningful lyrics, and its
production is second to none, but the most exciting thing has to be the angelic voice of Japjit Kaur. The Indian classically trained singer-songwriter raises the bar with this refreshing and toe-tapping track that is showing all the hallmarks of becoming a massive hit. Japjit's debut single ‘Jalte Hain Dil’ is not what you would expect from the diva with the big ballad voice. Produced under Buzz-erk Records, her new track explores the pop-rock genre for the very first
time. Built off the success of songs like ‘Ur Jaa’, ‘Sapano Se Pucho’ and ‘Baavaria’, all written and performed by Kaur for the awardwinning and critically acclaimed British composer and musician Niraj Chag, ‘Jalte Hain Dil’ delivers an upbeat modern tune, juxtaposed against a stylish retro video that features Japjit in a double role.

With a father being a HUGE Bollywood style-icon, one would sympathise with his son wanting to break into the Indian film industry. You would imagine him having a nervous breakdown whilst laying down his persona for the big screen and the audiences. However, for 23-year-old Tiger Shroff (yes that really is his name on his passport), his open proclamation of his dad - Jackie Shroff, being his ‘hero’ and the supportive pillar in his life has earned him much respect. Not only that, his debut in Sajid Nadiadwala's ‘Heropanti’ has become one of the biggest launches in recent times and has broken box-office records for a debutant. Since Jackie Shroff (fondly referred to as ‘Jackie dada’) is a very much-loved and highly respected veteran of the industry, the movie had a positive buzz ever since it was announced that Tiger was to make his debut. In fact many of Bollywood’s elite, such as Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, publicly supported Tiger’s embarkment and progress during the making of ‘Heropanti’. Actor Riteish Deshmukh, on social media said: "Absolutely thrilled to know that Tiger Shroff's 'Heropanti' is rocking. Wishing him super success. He is my hero, Jaggu Da's son". No love left for Ranbir

Deepika Padukone inked “RK” on the nape of her neck when her romance with Ranbir Kapoor was at the peak, but now with no love left, it’s been said that the long-legged dusky beauty has got rid of her famous tattoo. Though it’s not yet clear if Deepika had truly erased the RK tattoo or she has had it photo-shopped or covered up by some concealing aid, her recent advertisement shows no sign of the tattoo. Deepika had been head over heels in love with the actor but it was Ranbir who cheated on her. The actress was heartbroken with the break-up and it took time to get out of the trauma. Post break-up with Ranbir, she moved on in life and was also linked with Siddharth Mallya but she concentrated on her career more than any other thing and delivered one hit after another. She is now said to be dating Ranveer Singh but the actress has not yet made her relationship public and Ranveer claims that they are “just friends”. However, it was only recently that Ranveer, known famously for partying hard, was spotted kissing Anushka Manchanda at a night club in Mumbai. He’s denied being in a relationship with Deepika. Ranveer claims if two people hang out together, it doesn’t mean they are couple: "I think people are jumping the gun. I think it is very presumptuous of people to assume that two people are romantically involved if they are seen going out together. I don't think that is correct judgement," he said. The actor confessed that he came closer to Deepika during ‘Ram Leela’ shoot. Ranveer said, “Deepika is somebody I am really close to. She's a professional. I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration for her. Her graph has evolved by such leaps and bounds. It is a free country; I can't stop people from jumping to conclusions. We grew close on a personal level during the filming of Ram Leela and I look forward to working with her in ‘Bajirao Mastani’.”
Leone in Ahmed Khan's project
Looks like Sunny Leone is ruling the roost in Bollywood. Currently high on the success of her latest film ‘Ragini MMS 2’, the porn-star turned Bollywood actress seems to be on a roll after she bagged two further projects - the Bollywood sex comedy ‘Mastizaade’ and south Indian film ‘Current Teega’. Now the actress is all set to do a musical, which will be directed by Bobby Khan, brother of choreographer Ahmed Khan. Ahmed will be producing the film. Though Ahmed is tight-lipped about the details and Sunny's role in the film, we hear that this untitled musical will have about 11 songs choreographed by Ahmed. The film will be shot lavishly in different cities like Delhi, Agra and Jaisalmer. The hunt for the male lead is still on and the film is slated to go on floor late this year.
Vidya Balan battling rumours
Rumours are all the norm in celebrity life. For Vidya Balan, however, things are becoming quite difficult as she’s been under the spotlight since the beginning of this year. In March rumours began circulating that Vidya is pregnant and that that was the reason she’d opted out of the two film projects that she was a part of. The first was a film with ‘Kahaani’ director Sujoy Ghosh, opposite Irrfan Khan. The film was supposed to go to the floors this May, but according to one of
Vidya’s friends, "Vidya has told him that he can go ahead with another actress, but Sujoy says that he will wait for her." The other film was Mohit Suri directed ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ from the Bhatt camp that features Emraan Hashmi and Rajkummar Rao. However producer Mahesh Bhatt denied that Vidya has left the project: “She asked for the details before she left for the US. Why would she make enquiries if she didn't want to do my film?" Vidya’s friend also said that pregnancy has nothing to do with Vidya leaving the project rather it was the fatigue of doing back-to-
back film shoots. In an interview to a daily newspaper in April, Vidya finally spoke about the issue: “I'm fed up of these rumours. These days people look at my stomach when they talk to me… Inshallah, I will have a baby—but not so soon. I'm not mentally ready for motherhood yet. It's a daunting task to be responsible for another human being.” Unfortunately in addition to the pregnancy rumours the actress now has to deal with whispers about a possible divorce. Vidya has been keeping a low profile these days and apparently
the reason is trouble in her marriage with producer Siddharth Roy Kapoor who’s already married and divorced twice before tying the knot with Vidya in 2012. Industry sources are saying that Siddharth has gotten close with a newcomer actress. The two of them were spotted together a couple of times and Siddharth has been promoting her heavily these days. None of the reports can be confirmed at the moment and only time can tell what is happening in Vidya’s life.

Saif walks out Said to be one of the stylish actionthrillers coming from the stable of AbbasMustan, the adaptation of the literary classic 'The Count of Monte Cristo' was all set to roll once Saif Ali Khan was relieved of his prior commitments with other films. However, now the actor has decided to back out of the film. Stating it to be a role similar to the characters he plays in the ‘Race’ franchise, Saif made it clear that he would like to experiment with roles keeping the audience's taste in mind. While he was really excited when the role of the lead was offered to him initially, he revealed that being the kind of person he is, he often gets attracted to such roles innately but on second thoughts, he wanted to do something new and fun.

itself caused headlines back in the day. After managing to woo her back things remained seemingly calm. It was after the birth of their second child that trouble brewed once again. This saw Karisma permanently leaving the marital home in Delhi and moved to Mumbai. It’s been rumoured that the main reason for the couple’s fallout is to do with a sexual relationship Sunjay had with a Delhi socialite Priya Chatwal. The pair are now trying to come to an agreement where they can get mutual custody of the two children. As the kids are too young to decide for themselves, talks are on over how they will manage it, as both Karisma and Sanjay live in different cities. The active aerodynamic panels in the bodywork deploy automatically when the supercar encounters certain road conditions or reaches certain speeds, and the entire body is made of carbon fibre and aluminum. Rather than traditional side doors, the Egoista has a single canopy door that allows the driver to enter the cockpit. The model has now returned to Lamborghini's headquarters in Italy, where it will go on display in the company's showroom before becoming a permanent part of the Lamborghini Museum.

Packed with tech BMW’s debutant 2 Series Active Tourer will arrive in showrooms in September
By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
BMW has just announced that it’s 2 Series Active Tourer, its first ever frontwheel drive model, will arrive in showrooms this September, priced from £22,150. The standard specification for this latest addition to the BMW range has now been confirmed and includes: Automatic tailgate, two-zone automatic air conditioning, rear Park Distance Control,
BMW Emergency Call, 40:20:40 split folding rear seat with electronic folding functionality and 60:40 sliding rear bench. Additionally it comes with Bluetooth with USB interface and audio streaming functionality, BMW Professional radio with single CD player and 6.5-inch monitor, DAB digital radio, Performance Control, Comfort Go keyless engine start, Drive Performance Control with ECO PRO, Comfort and Sport modes, rain sensor
with automatic headlight activation, Sport multifunction leather steering wheel and additional 12V power socket. From launch only two engine variants will be offered, with prices rising to £24,205 for the 218d SE model. Using the same running gear as the new MINI, the engines come with the entrylevel 218i (£22,150) with a 134bhp 1.5-litre threecylinder motor. The more powerful 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel is fitted to the 218d
(£24,205), with economy claimed at 68.9mpg. Soon after the launch in September, BMW is set to expand the 2 Series Active Tourer line-up with the introduction of 220i, 220d and 216d models along with all-wheel drive variants. From November, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will be available in M Sport specification, priced at £3,000 premium over the SE.
The Pulsar Nissan bring technology and style in a new package
Nissan's passion for innovation and technology has seen it transform the family car landscape over the course of the last seven years. Now, using the same design approach and original thinking that produced the Qashqai, XTrail and Note, Nissan brings the all-new family hatchback challenger called the Pulsar. Combining bold design, technical innovations and interior space, the new Pulsar brings a new dimension to the Csegment, offering all the familiar Nissan qualities in a stylish new package. In keeping with Nissan's approach to innovation and reduced costs for owners, the Pulsar's engine allturbocharged engine range delivers the perfect combination of performance
and efficiency. The 1.2-litre DIG-T petrol unit punches above its weight with an output of 115PS, while the 1.5-litre dCi generates 110PS and 260Nm of torque. An even more powerful 190PS 1.6litre turbocharged petrol engine will join the range early in 2015. Continuing Nissan's successful downsizing philosophy, the new Pulsar's engines are high on performance and low on emissions, with CO2 outputs below 95g/km. It’s also packed with a range of technologies such as its second-generation NissanConnect system that comes with a range of innovative features including full smartphone integration, Google® Send-to-Car and access to a wide variety of useful and informative apps. The Pulsar will go on sale in Autumn.

Fashion statement Seat collaborates with Spanish brand Mango for youthful car By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
Built on the belief that thinking small shouldn’t mean sacrificing on style, the special edition’s arrival is the result of a collaboration between Seat and influential Spanish fashion company ‘Mango’. Available in both three and fivedoor body-styles, priced at £10,995 and £11,345 respectively, this newcomer is a flagship addition to the Barcelonabased brand’s successful Mii family. Powered exclusively by the higher output 75PS version of the VW Group’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine with five-speed manual gearbox means there’s adequate performance matched with impressive eco credentials. The vital statistics are: 062mph in 13.2 seconds; 108g/km CO2; 60.1mpg combined. Boasting a lengthy list of additional standard features, over the Sport on which it is based, fashion meets functionality in a car that’s all about
youthful yet tasteful design. The first visual cue to this catwalkinspired edition is the Mii by MANGO badging and choice of colour schemes. Emphasising its status as a halo model, Mii by MANGO also benefits from an interior makeover. The unique leather and perforated alcantara upholstery adds an aura of real luxury with the contrast piping and stitching, as well as branded door sills, floor mats and key fobs, creating a bespoke feel to the cabin environment. With all of the expected modern bits and bobs such as remote central locking, electric windows etc, it comes equipped with satellite navigation, bluetooth hands-free connectivity and audio streaming for the musically minded. A panoramic glass sunroof and front fog lights can be ordered as additional options. Despite making a fashion statement, Seat say that the Mii by MANGO won’t disappoint on the move. First deliveries are expected in August.

A new limited edition LMX version of the Audi R8 will not only be the most powerful road-going iteration of the super sports car ever made, but will also be notable as the first production car to adopt laser high beam lighting as standard. The new 570PS, 198mph R8 LMX will make its UK public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 26th and will become available to order at the same time priced from £160,025 OTR. UK deliveries will begin in the autumn.
• 5.2-litre V10 engine developing 570PS and 540Nm • 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds • Top speed 198mph, • Combined MPG 21.9, CO2 299g/km • Priced from £160,025 OTR • Pioneering laser high beam lighting offers twice the illumination range of all-LED headlights
The Audi R8 LMX is based on the acclaimed V10 plus model with its high-revving, midmounted ten-cylinder engine, double wishbone suspension and ASF (Audi Space Frame) aluminium body. It will be available exclusively as a coupe with a production run limited to 99 vehicles, and with 540 Nm of torque to complement its 570PS output will be capable of rocketing to 62mph from rest in just 3.4 seconds before topping out at 198mph. Back in 2008, the Audi R8 became the first production car in
the world to feature all LED headlights; this was followed in 2012 by dynamic indicators with a unique sweeping action. Audi launched a new chapter in automotive lighting with the Matrix LED headlights, which debuted in the updated A8 in 2013. Now the brand is progressing to the next stage in the R8 LMX: the laser spot for the high beams. It increases the illumination range substantially, which is ideal for a supercar like the R8 LMX. The light emitted by laser beams before they pass through a phosphor converter is blue, and this has inspired an Audi exclusive Ara Blue, crystal effect customised paint finish for the new car.

Football student gives Academy top score
Learn and Play
TEAM: There are currently 16 Shipley College Guiseley Football Academy students, with 20 more set to be recruited for next year
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A prospective teenage footballer from Bradford is just one student on a bespoke sport course in Yorkshire who is urging others to make the same decision he did and combine education and football into the perfect match. 17-year-old Karamjit Basi, from Tyersal, is currently enrolled at the Shipley College Guiseley Football Academy which was set up to combine high quality football development with continued academic study. Students spend six to eight hours a week training, whilst also playing matches against professional academies, alongside educational work. Central-midfielder, Karamjit, who has had spells with the academies at Bradford City and Leeds United in the past, was initially sceptical about the workload yet insists the course is ‘great fun’ and ‘extremely rewarding’. “It is going very well,” he said. “At the start of the course I thought it may be more difficult to be putting the education side and football together but it has been really enjoyable. “One of the main things you learn is that if you don’t make it in life as a footballer there are other careers out there which still revolve around the sport. “It is also a very rewarding course as it is a BTEC Level 3 diploma meaning you can get three A grades at A-Level when you finish, so if you are interested

in university you have the qualifications.” Set up in 2012, the academy also caters for extra qualifications which young players aspire to achieve, giving them even more credentials upon leaving the course. For Karamjit, who was playing for Rothwell Juniors before he joined up with Guiseley Academy, this was a big factor in his decision to enrol. “You have the opportunity to be put through your coaching badges here which again leaves the door open for different ways to get into the sport,” he said. “Ideally I hope to further my footballing career and do it as my profession but for now I know that by getting the best qualifications I possibly can, it will help set me up for a career in football, one way or another.” He added: “I would definitely recommend the course to anybody who is considering it. “What you put in is what you get out, and it may be a lot of hard work but at the end of the day, it will all be worthwhile.”
New World Number One Australia's Adam Scott has surpassed Tiger Woods as the number one player on the official world golf rankings, seizing the top spot despite not playing this past week. Scott, who spent the past 38 weeks as the second ranked player, has had chances to overtake Woods through high tournament finishes but has instead done so with both players out of action. Woods last played in March and is out indefinitely following back surgery, making his fall from the top inevitable. The 33-year-old Scott is just the second Australian to reach the top ranking, following Greg Norman's final reign
which ended in 1998. “This is another outstanding achievement for Adam Scott,” Brian Thorburn, Chief Executive of the PGA of Australia, said in a statement. “The Australian golfing community is very proud of Adam and we look forward to watching his progress throughout the year.” Venus Williams was eliminated from the French Open in the second round, the eighth time in her last nine major tournaments that she has failed to win more than one match. The seven-time Grand Slam champion won the

Adding to the tension, Indians in traditional tribal dress with bows drawn joined the protesters from the Homeless Worker's movement. The group says building stadiums to host the World Cup was too costly, caused real estate prices to soar and forced lowerincome families out of their homes.
Since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2011, Williams has been eliminated in the first or second round at every Grand Slam tournament she has played except the 2013 Australian Open, where she reached the third round.

READY: Haroon Khan says he is confident of extending his winning streak to five bouts next month as he faces off against Kyle King in his hometown
Rising star Haroon Khan will be back in action next month when he faces 24-year-old Kyle King at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton. The super-flyweight ace will fight for the first time in his hometown since turning professional in April last year, when he features in a six-round contest on Saturday 7th June. The 23-year-old has made an emphatic start to life in the paid ranks having blasted his way past all four opponents including a stunning stoppage
of Vincente Medellin in Atlantic City on his US debut. Looking to go from strengthto-strength following his decisive points win over Francis Croes in February, the 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist can’t wait to get back in action when he takes on the tricky King who has won four of his seven fights. “Since the last time I fought I’ve been itching to get back in the ring,” Khan said. “I’ve been ticking over in the gym and had some great
sparring that’s really been of huge benefit to me. I think in this fight I’ll show how much I’m progressing under Oliver Harrison and all his team. “We’re building something, and on 7th June I aim to show all the hard work we as a team have been putting in. I can’t wait to fight at the Reebok Stadium and I’m determined to get another win under my belt to continue my progression to what I believe will one day be the very top.”
World Cup hopes take a beating
With the Hockey World Cup set to begin this weekend in The Hague, Netherlands, India have been dealt two cruel setbacks just days before their opening fixture. Forwards, Nikkin Thimmaiah and Ramandeep Singh, have both been ruled out of the tournament through injury. Thimmaiah pulled up in training with a hamstring injury, just days before the country’s first game against Belgium on Saturday 31st May, and has been told to rest for

Both attackers will play no part over the two week contest which leaves India’s hopes of achieving anything higher than a fifth placed finish for the first time since 1975, even more remote. Hockey India said in an official statement released earlier this week that Yuvraj Walmiki would

No stopping the HULK By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
With the 2014 Formula One season beginning to take shape, there have been a few things that lovers of the sport know they can now rely on. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg seem certain for a onetwo finish in just about every race, Sebastian Vettel is in the worst slump of his Red Bull career, and of course Force India’s very own Nico Hulkenberg will pick up a points finish. The German driver has been performing above all expectations this year, and his latest ten point haul at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend has propelled him into fifth place in the Driver’s Championship. His fifth placed finish is the best ever for any Force India driver at the world-renowned track, and Hulkenberg picked up the points in style, completing one of the finest overtaking manoeuvres of now join up with the squad as a replacement for Thimmaiah India's chief coach, Terry Walsh, accepted that the injuries were likely to prove a big setback but remains confident that his side can perform on the biggest stage of them all. He said: “It's a double blow. Nikkin Thimmaiah is a key player in the team and his injury is a big setback. “With both Ramandeep and Nikkin missing out on the big platform, I am sure both Yuvraj and Lalit (Upadhayay) will take this as a big opportunity to prove themselves.”
Points galore at Monaco Grand prix the current campaign. Speaking after the race, the 26year-old driver, who finished fifth for the third time this year, said he was delighted with his performance. “Ten points today is a great reward after such a difficult race,” he said. “The last twenty laps were really tricky because my supersoft tyres were at the end of their life and it was hard to hold off the cars behind me and stay away from the barriers. “There were a few close moments when I kissed the wall, but I survived and managed to hold on to fifth place. “Fortunately my car was quick in the right places – going into the tunnel and also through the final corner.” Speaking about his favourite
moment of the race, he added: “There were some enjoyable moments in the race, especially my move on Magnussen. “He had to let the Toro Rosso back through and he lost a bit of momentum so I saw my opportunity to stick my nose down the inside of turn eight. On a track like Monaco it gives you a big smile to make the move stick.” Unfortunately for the Force India team, Hulkenberg’s teammate, Sergio Perez, was clipped on the first lap and forced to retire to leave the Mexican with no points in France. Drivers and Constructors will now head to North America for their next challenge with the Canadian Grand Prix set to be held on the 8th June.
Walmiki, who made his debut in 2011, said he was looking forward to the challenge and helping his country in games against Australia, England, Belgium, Spain and Malaysia. “I will give my best and live up to the expectations of the coach and team,” he said. “I was part of the Indian team on the European tour last month so getting used to the weather and playing conditions ahead of the World Cup should not be a big challenge for me. “I am excited at having got a OUT: Nikkin Thimmaiah (l) and Ramandeep call from the team and am Singh (r) have both been ruled out of the Hockey looking forward to take on the World Cup after picking up injuries just days challenge.” before the tournament kicks off
