Just four weeks to find a suitable donor to save toddler’s life A 19-month-old toddler has just a few weeks to find a suitable donor for a life-saving transplant. Little Khalid Adam, from Coventry, has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - a rare form of blood cancer and has been placed on the bone marrow transplant list. Last week witnessed hundreds of thousands of people across the globe united in protest against the crimes committed by the Israeli army upon innocent civilians in Gaza. Calls for the world-wide proPalestinian solidarity came from an organisation known as the ‘Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions Movement’ (BDS). Promoted as ‘Gaza Calling: Day of Rage’, thousands stood in solidarity for human rights for Gazans across cities around the world on the 8th and 9th August. Public frustration continues to pour out through social media against the sluggish reaction by western world-leaders to intervene and bring justice to the Palestinian people. Supporters of Gaza demand an end to Israel’s ‘barbaric’ assault on Gaza, and calls on the British government to implement an immediate embargo on arms sales to Israel. Major mainstream news networks also continue to be slammed for their ‘biased reporting’ and for ‘wateringdown’ the horrors subjected upon innocent Palestinian civilians by the Israeli government. Although figures are unconfirmed, it’s been estimated that over 200,000 people partook in the London protests. The United Kingdom’s largest demonstration for Gaza made history, not only as the biggest protest in solidarity with Palestine

Priyanka Chopra left the comforts of her luxurious Bollywood lifestyle to meet with rural women being supported by UNICEF’s adolescent work in India for eight years now. In India there are around 243 million adolescents who are facing rising youth unemployment. Life can be particularly hard for young women as they face the challenges of limited economic opportunities and access to training and employment, which reinforce broader issues of discrimination, early marriage, violence and poverty. During her visit in Chandrapur to mark International Youth Day, Priyanka – the UNICEF India Ambassador, met young women from the ‘Building Young Futures’ programme, locally known as ‘Deepshikha’, and saw how they are being empowered to help fulfill their potential. The aim is to unlock the potential of young people from disadvantaged communities. The young women receive support in developing skills they need to overcome the challenges they face to become strong, financially independent women as well as agents of change in their communities. This includes learning how to save, building business plans, developing their own enterprises and learning how to network as well as building confidence, understanding girl’s rights and leadership skills. Priyanka met girls including Sadhana Chaudhari, who was discriminated against by her family and had to leave school early with limited skills. Sadhana, now 23 years old, runs her own
tailoring business, and is setting up a group sanitary napkin business with other girls from her village. She has become a leader in the programme, or ‘Prerika’ as they are locally known, and is determined to pass what she has learnt onto other women in the community.

Priyanka Chopra said: “Girls have the ability to transform their own lives, develop their own enterprises and help grow India’s economy. NATO warning
Prime Minister David Cameron says NATO must rethink its long-term relationship with Russia following its ‘illegal’ actions in Ukraine. Writing to alliance leaders, Cameron says it is clear that Russia views NATO as an adversary. He says NATO must strengthen its ability to respond quickly to any threat, and agree on how to sustain a robust presence in Eastern Europe. The letter, which was released Saturday, comes six weeks before the meeting in Wales, the first NATO summit in the UK since Margaret Thatcher hosted the alliance 1990 as the cold war was coming to a close. Cameron says that today's world is more unpredictable as ‘Russia has ripped up the rulebook with its illegal annexation of Crimea and aggressive destabilization of Ukraine’.
Gherkin for sale
The Gherkin skyscraper in the City of London has been put up for sale and the landmark building is expected to attract interest from around the world. The 40-storey office tower is being sold by receivers after one of its joint owners, Germany's IVG Immobilien, filed for insolvency last year. Co-owner Evans Randall said in April it was ready to invest further, but was unable to agree a new financial structure with IVG. Agents said the building, whose distinctive curved profile has been a feature of London's skyline for a decade, could fetch in excess of £640million. Jamie Olley, Head of City Investment at Deloitte Real Estate, called the Gherkin ‘the most iconic office tower in the City's skyline’, adding: “We are confident of maximising returns to the receivers and creditors.”
Kidnapped teacher freed
A British teacher who was kidnapped in Yemen in February was finally released last month according to the Foreign Office. Mike Harvey, who was abducted on 12th February on his way from an educational institute, was at the British embassy in the capital Sanaa, it said in a statement. “We are pleased to confirm that British hostage Mike Harvey held in Yemen since February has been released safely. He is being supported by staff at the British Embassy and will be reunited with his family soon,” it added. Earlier this year, the kidnapping was the third in Yemen in two weeks. Another Briton working in the oil business was abducted in February, two days after a German citizen was kidnapped. Kidnappings by armed tribesmen in Yemen are common although most hostages are released after a ransom is paid. The Foreign Office advises British nationals not to travel to the country.
New policy at Scotland Yard
If your dream is to work for England’s largest police force and you don’t live in London well it may be time to think about relocating as new recruitment measures were brought in this month. As of the 1st August Scotland Yard announced a major shift in its recruitment policy, which stipulates that any job applicants to its force must be Londonbased, to make the service more representative of those it serves. Only those who have lived in the city for at least three of the last six years will be considered for a job at the force according to a statement provided from the Met. “It is a shared ambition by the Met and the mayor, Boris Johnson to recruit a workforce that reflects London's diversity and has the skills and cultural competencies needed to police a great global city,” a statement read.

Just 4 weeks to find suitable donor to save toddler’s life Originally he was treated for pneumonia but around a week later, Khalid developed a lump and blisters in his groin area and so was readmitted to Coventry’s University Hospital. With dad Isa Adam at his side, Khalid was transferred urgently over to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the rare blood cancer. The toddler was given a five-month course of chemotherapy in June last year and returned home at the end of November 2013. “At the end of Khalid’s treatment, we were told that he had a 70 per cent chance of relapse,” says mum Tracy Kyberd. “We saw the 30 per cent chance he had of making it through and were so happy. “We celebrated Khalid’s birthday at home and everything was going fine. We even booked a holiday to go away this month. He looked so well. “But our world collapsed when we were told, during a regular check-up, that the cancer was back.” Time is limited because it is feared that Khalid’s tiny body may not be able to cope with the intense treatment needed to keep his cancer at bay.
Becoming a bone marrow donor is quite simple, registering involves providing a saliva sample and the donation procedure is similar to giving blood. The devastating news of Khalid’s condition and his deteriorating health, including a hole in his heart from the chemotherapy, has left the poorly baby battling for his life and the family searching for a bone marrow donor. But Khalid is less likely to find a 100 per cent match because he is mixed race - his mum is white and his dad is Asian and there’s a huge under-representation of ethnic minorities on the donor register. All it takes is a simple swab. “We are in dire need of someone who may be a 100 per cent match to step forward to save my little boy’s life. “It’s a shot in the dark but we are clinging onto the hope that someone will be able to help my little boy.” Becoming a bone marrow donor is quite simple. Holiday Nightmare
More than 100 holidaymakers, including at least 50 Brits, have fallen ill in the picturesque holiday destination of Sharm el Sheikh, with a ‘holiday bug’ cutting short many families dream vacations. The outbreak illness, at the four-star Coral Sea Water World, has left dozens bed-ridden complaining of stomach cramps, fevers and sickness, whilst some were even forced to stay in their rooms on a drip. An unknown bug, which has been blamed on ‘poor hygiene’ at the resort by some tourists on travel sites, is believed to be the cause. Lawyers have said many have been diagnosed with ‘Shigella’ which can take weeks to recover from. Despite a large number of visitors already falling ill, it is predicted that the number affected is likely to double in coming weeks. First Choice, which is the exclusive travel agent for the resort, said it was ‘aware of a small number of cases of sickness at the Coral Sea Water World, Egypt, with symptoms similar to a virus’. In a statement provided by the holidaymakers, it continued: “Our overseas Holiday Advisors have been assisting any customers reporting sickness at the hotel and they have been offering them appropriate support and advice. “Reported cases of sickness have reduced and an independent health and safety consultant has been undertaking a thorough investigation in resort, ensuring that the correct containment procedures are in place. “We would like to reassure customers that we closely audit all the resorts to which we operate to ensure that health, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained.”

Lights out
Lights across Britain were switched off for an hour on Monday in a tribute to the dead of World War One inspired by the prophetic observation of thenForeign Minister Lord Grey on the eve of war 100 years ago. “The lamps are going out all over Europe,” Grey said in 1914. “We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” British landmarks such as Trafalgar Square were dark from 10pm and Prime Minister David Cameron had asked all Britons to switch off all but a single light in their homes for an hour. The ‘war to end all wars’ spread carnage across Europe, especially northern France and Belgium, killing 17 million soldiers and civilians between 1914 and 1918. One million of the dead were soldiers from Britain and its then empire. Cameron and Prince William, secondin-line to the throne, attended 100th anniversary ceremonies in Scotland and Belgium on Monday.

Ebola scare
A scare at a popular English airport earlier this week proved to be a false alarm after initial fears of the Ebola virus in the UK. Following a flight from Sierra Leone, an elderly passenger fell ill and died leading airport staff terrified that the deadly virus may have been on the plane. A Gatwick spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a passenger on board a Gambia Bird flight on Saturday 2nd August became unwell after disembarking the aircraft, was treated by experienced medical airport staff at the scene but sadly later died at East Surrey Hospital. “Given the origin of the flight, the hospital carried out tests for Ebola and other infectious diseases as a precaution. The tests came back negative. “As a precaution, the aircraft was isolated, as were relevant airline and airport staff. At every stage, we took advice from Public Health England, which cleared the aircraft for its return journey.”

MPs Rushanara Ali and Jim Fitzpatrick alongside campaigners from the ‘Save Our Surgeries’ campaign hand delivered a 20,000strong petition to 10 Downing Street last week. The campaign was set up by GPs and patients - in response to Government plans to phase out funding, known as the 'minimum practice income guarantee' (MPIG) for GP surgeries across the UK. In 2004 the government changed the funding formula
232 Teeth, 1 Mouth www.asianexpress.co.uk
for GP surgeries and many say that it didn't take account of the fact that in deprived areas people have higher health needs. Many practices would have gone bankrupt, so they introduced MPIG to stop practices falling below their previous level of income. Now the government is taking away the MPIG and many practices are threatened with bankruptcy again. The concern here is that good quality healthcare practices will be replaced by GP surgeries run by large private firms on the cheap, which compromises
community health. Although the Government has so far failed to publish the names of the threatened surgeries, it is known that 22 serve communities across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. Five are known to be in Tower Hamlets alone. The petition calls on the Government to ‘fund general practices fairly, and reverse the effects of your decision to withdraw the MPIG, and to change the funding formula to take account of the effects of deprivation, both inner city and rural so that all practices are fairly funded’.
Indian boy has ‘world-record’ operation A teenager from Mumbai, who initially sought medical help after a swelling on the side of his jaw, could not have been prepared for what was about to be pulled out of his mouth. 17-year-old Ashik Gavai had a total of 232 teeth removed last month in what could be a worldrecord operation. After being referred to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, he was found to be suffering from a condition known as complex odontoma – benign tumours linked to tooth development – according to head of dentistry Sunanda DhivarePalwankar. What was initially just a pain in the right side of Ashik’s lower jaw soon turned into a huge operation as Dr Dhivare-Palwankar
explained. “We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours,” she said. “We thought it may be a simple surgery but once we opened it there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone.” After removing those, the team found a larger structure, described as ‘marble-like’ that was lodged in the jaw. It was eventually removed with smaller fragments being chiselled out by the staff. Ashik's father, Suresh Gavai, said the family had been worried that the swelling was a malignant growth. “I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai,” Gavai told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper.
RECORD: More than 200 teeth were removed from Ashik’s mouth in one long seven hour procedure
Dhivare-Palwankar added that the literature they had come across on the condition showed a maximum of 37 teeth being removed in such a procedure, whereas she and her team had counted more than 232 taken from
Gavai's mouth. “I think it could be a world record,” she said. Gavai's jawbone structure was maintained during the operation so it should heal without deformities, the surgeon added.
A woman, who had faced charges of funding jihadists in Syria, has walked free from court whilst her friend and fellow defendant was found guilty of the offence. 27-year-old Nawal Msaad, had attempted to take a stash of 20,000 Euros in rolled up notes on a passenger flight from Heathrow to Istanbul as a ‘trusted courier’ for her friend Amal ElWahabi. The latter’s husband had left the UK in July 2013 to pursue a jihadist cause in Syria and Al-Wahabi, 27, had attempted to fund his plans via smuggling cash on a plane. Msaad, of Holloway, London, was tasked with taking the cash through the departure gates yet the plan was scuppered when the stash, which had been hidden in a condom, fell out into her underwear. Both women denied the charge of making money available with reasonable cause to suspect that it would or may be used for the purpose of terrorism. Msaad was cleared of the offence at the old bailey on Thursday morning yet El-Wahabi was convicted after almost 24 hours of deliberations, with a result of 10-1 from the jury. With such a ruling, El-Wahabi becomes the first Briton to be convicted under the terror laws of funding jihadi fighters in Syria. As she was told of
the guilty verdict, the London resident broke down before she was warned by trial judge, Nicholas Hilliard QC, that she faced jail at her 12th September sentencing. Judge Hilliard said the crime was different to that of her husband’s but added: “I do not want there to be any misunderstanding. On the face of it, an immediate custodial sentence appears inevitable in this case. “This was a substantial amount of money destined to go, on the evidence, straight into the hands of a dangerous extremist who was engaged in violent jihad with all the terror and misery that causes.” El-Wahabi will be remanded in custody until her sentencing date next month. Meanwhile, Msaad hugged friends outside court as she walked away with an innocent verdict from all jurors. In a brief statement to waiting reporters, she said: “I'm relieved to be found not guilty. I will be forever thankful to my family. I'm physically drained and mentally weak. “I would like to thank my legal team for getting me through this. I'm grateful to the 11 jurors who unanimously found me not guilty. The last eight months have been surreal.”

‘Shame’ as Eid argument requires police intervention
SCENE: Hundreds of Muslims were at the Jamia Masjid Hanfia, in Manningham, when the incident occured

A disturbance at a Bradford Mosque last weekend resulted in police being called to the place of worship as the Eid festivities began in a shameful manner. Muslims attending the Jamia Masjid Hanfia, in Manningham, on the night of Sunday 27th July argued about the first sighting of the moon and the correct date to start celebrating the annual festival.
It is reported that a group of Muslims interrupted the Taraweeh prayers inside the Mosque as they believed Eid was to be celebrated the next day. The Taraweeh prayer is only carried out during the night before a day of fast and therefore Muslims, who believed Eid was the next day (Monday 28th July), were not required to do the prayer. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that they were called to a disturbance in Ambler Street at 9.58pm on Sunday 27th July, with all
have been forced from their homes, and one and a half million people have no or very limited access to water or sanitation. “Many people are living in terribly overcrowded UN shelters, but they still need food and basic household items which we take for granted. Many are in urgent need of medical care, but hospital supplies are almost finished. “Even before the conflict began the people of Gaza were close to breaking point. Now we are seeing a humanitarian emergency
affecting virtually every man, woman and child in Gaza. “The DEC’s member agencies and their partners are on the ground but they need funds to meet the huge needs. They are relying on the generosity of the British people to make a difference in Gaza.” The DEC brings 13 leading UK aid charities together in times of crisis: ActionAid UK, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision - all collectively

parties spoken to yet no offences disclosed. The events surprisingly occurred despite the fact that Muslims celebrating Eid on a different day in recent years has become somewhat common sight. Zulfiqar Karim, secretary of the Bradford Council of Mosques, condemned any sort of violence within a mosque and said it was imperative that people learned from this year’s mistake. “Everybody has the right to their own beliefs and school of thoughts regardless of where they are from,” he said. “It is imperative to respect this as Muslims. “The one thing we do not want is for people to take the law into their own hands, whether that is either Islamic law or the law of the land. “Resorting to violence within a mosque is absolutely not acceptable.” Eid is celebrated around the world upon the first sighting of the moon following the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Muslims in the UK rely on scholars in the closest Islamic country to tell them when the moon has been sighted, so their monthlong fasting can come to an end. Palestine Projection VISUAL: The Palestine flag could be seen on the House of Commons as campaigns for the nation continue to gather momentum in the UK
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As demonstrations continue to take place across the UK in support of Palestine, a huge image of the nation’s flag was projected onto the House of Commons last week. In the early hours of Friday 1st August, the pro-Palestine group, Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), shone the flag with the messages, ‘Free Palestine’, ‘Sanctions Now!’ and ‘Stop the massacre’. Hugh Lanning, Chair of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, explained why the publicity stunt had been done and hoped to see the British government intervene in the conflict between Gaza and Israel. “It is an outrage that the British Government is standing by whilst Israel slaughters Palestinians,” he said. “The Prime Minister, David Cameron has failed to listen to the voices of hundreds and thousands of British people who have taken to the streets. “He has failed to stand up for an occupied people being ruthlessly murdered by an occupying power. “People are really angry that this injustice is continuing despite our ability as a nation to pressure Israel to end the attacks. “The Government must not delay in responding to the moral and public demands it faces.” A Metropolitan Police spokesman said they had not been aware of any complaints or security issues with regards to the flag's projection on Westminster. The flag is just the latest protest which has been seen across the UK in recent weeks as support for Palestine continues to grow from much of the British public. In Bradford, the Palestine flag was raised outside the City Hall whilst in Tower Hamlets, Muslim MP, Lutfur Rahman, raised the flag above their town hall to ‘show solidarity with Gaza’. However, Mr Luftur, who is set to face trial over allegations of voting fraud, was sad to see his flag ripped down in what the council called an ‘act of perceived vandalism’. A replacement flag was raised the following day.
Home of British Politics lit up in awareness campaign
Boycotting big brands Last week we ran the story about a boycott awareness campaign outside a Bradford McDonalds which had been met with some scrutiny after members of the public claimed they were ‘intimidated not informed’ by protestors. Groups have been gathering outside the establishments in recent weeks in an attempt to get others to boycott the fast food giants due to their alleged ties with Israel. Support has been received in the bountiful with statistics showing a clear downward trend in McDonalds share prices since last month, primarily due to the brands expired meat scandal across the chain in China. Yet, in what was supposed to be an awareness project, members of some groups have been called ‘intimidating’ at times by some customers who have visited the sites. One incident involved a mother with her eight-year-old daughter. The pair drove in to the McDonald’s, in Thornbury, for a milkshake and found themselves surrounded by a group of around 20 men and boys. They hurled abuse at them and held a megaphone in the child’s face and told her to ‘burn in hell’ and ‘go to hell’ for buying from the eatery. The mother of the child said: “I agree that campaigning makes a difference, and if people want to boycott a brand, that’s absolutely their prerogative. If they want to spread their message, it should be with distribution of factual information so as to convince – not by screaming and shouting at people. “I’d like to know how they’d react if someone screamed and hurled abuse in their innocent child’s face,
FORCE: Police were on hand to ensure the protest remained peaceful and handed out documents to explain the rules, some of which customers claim were not being followed
telling them they’re going to go to hell – they’d probably rip their heads off.” The aggressive incident has been slammed by a huge number of the boycott McDonald’s and Tesco campaigners, saying that the
scenario witnessed by the mother and child should never have happened and that the issue would have to be addressed. This has given rise to the question of how to avoid a peaceful campaign from turning into a violent
one. A former campaigner calling for the boycott of Tesco said: “It’s a shame how a small group of irrational and idiotic people can ruin all the hard work of campaigners who’ve worked constructively and peacefully to inform people about pro-Israeli brands. “Because it was getting out of control with a small group chanting curses and swearing at patrons, I’m sorry to say that I have had to quit. I don’t want to be affiliated with violence and swearing at random people.” Most supporters of the boycott campaigns have stated that the cursing and chanting should be brushed aside as it is nothing compared to the plight of the Palestinian people. One Facebook user said that the mother of the child should have thought better than to go buy a McDonalds. What do you think? We’d love to have your comments. Email: comments@asianexpress.co.uk
Did you know... It’s been confirmed that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are in a relationship, but now a director who is close to both of them says they are heading for the altar. “They’re very serious about one another. When they’re in public, they pretend
to be just friends. But away from prying eyes they don’t care to hide their feelings for one another. When it began, neither of them realised how serious they would get about each other.” According to the buzz, a wedding will take place next year.

A textile tycoon from India has combined his work-life with his ‘true passion’ as he gifted himself a shirt made out of pure gold for his 45th birthday. Despite leaving school with no qualifications in his youth, Pankaj Parakh has become one of the most successful textile business owners in India with an empire worth millions. To celebrate his latest birthday, he commissioned the £127,000 shirt, weighing more than four kilos, to be made and proudly showed it off for the first time last week as he marched through the streets of his home in Yeola, 230km from Mumbai. Explaining why he had taken the decision to develop such an extravagant design, he said: “I wanted to wear something special when I say my thanks for my success at a thanksgiving visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple of the Hindu elephant god in Mumbai. “I have always been fascinated with
AU-thentic shirt ‘Dress to impress’ taken to a whole new level gold since I was five-years-old and studying in school. And over the years that interest has become a real passion. So it was logical that I would want to make my 45th birthday a golden affair. “In fact even on my wedding 23 years ago a lot of people said it was embarrassing that I was wearing more gold than my bride, but I just love the Royal metal.” He added: “I never go out with less than two to three kilos of gold jewellery.” The shirt design has seven solid gold buttons and required a team of 20 workers to stitch it together over a two
Maths’ top prize Woman professor leads the way for all mathematicians
AWARD: Maryam Mirzakhani, was awarded one of the highest honours in mathematics as she was handed the Fields Medal
August 2014 - 1st Edition
An Iranian mathematician has become the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal, mathematics equivalent to the Nobel Peace Prize, after recieving her award earlier this week. Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor at Stanford University in California, was among four Fields Medal recipients at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Seoul, and the first
month period. Of course, if you are going to spend more than £100,000 on a shirt it has to be the best quality and this gold concoction certainly is. Only 18-22 carat gold has been used throughout yet the design of it has been so carefully developed that Mr Parakh claims it is as flexible and comfortable as a normal shirt. He said: “It is easily washed and can be hung up to dry just like a normal piece of clothing. It also has a lifetime guarantee come with it so that if it's torn or damaged it will quickly be repaired.”
female among the 56 winners since the prize was established in 1936. “This is a great honour,” she said. “I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians. “I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years,” she said. Mirzakhani, 37, was born in Tehran and lived there until she began her doctorate work at Harvard University. She said she had dreamed of becoming a writer when she was young, but she pursued her enthusiasm for solving mathematical problems. “It is fun – it's like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case. I felt that this was something I could do,
and I wanted to pursue this path,” she said. Mirzakhani was recognized for her work in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces, according to the Stanford site. The prizes are awarded every four years. Wednesday's prizes were presented by South Korean President Park Geun-hye, the first woman to hold that post. The other three Fields Medal winners on Wednesday were Artur Avila of the National Center for Scientific Research in France and Brazil's National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics; Manjul Bhargava of Princeton University and Martin Hairer of the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

25,000 miles, 33 countries, two wheels, one man 15 months ago, a cycling enthusiast from Leeds embarked on an epic journey around the world, and to make things that little bit more interesting, he did it all on a bike. 35-year-old Imran Mughal completed the 25,000 mile route, through four different continents, tackling every obstacle from tough terrain in the outback to gunshots in Bosnia. After being made redundant from his job with the NHS, he decided to take on the challenge and helped raise thousands of pounds for Charity:Water, even paying a visit to the HQ in New York during his trip.
ADVENTURE: Imran Mughal spent more than a year on the road with his bike as he travelled around the world
New York
Taj Mahal, India
Documenting his incredible journey through social media, Imran visited landmarks in all corners of the world from the Taj Mahal in India, through to Mount Rushmore in the United States. The journeyman set off in May last year, and finally returned home to a warm welcome from family and friends on Saturday 2nd August. He has now been settling back into life in the UK and spoke to the Asian Express about his remarkable trip. “It has been an overwhelming experience and was initially just a dream for me a couple of years ago so to see it come true is incredible,” he said. “I have done long cycles before through Europe and down Route 66 in America but this has to be the most rewarding and amazing experience.
Georgia
The extraordinary journey of Imran Mughal “It makes you realise what is important in life and what isn’t. It humbles you to the core and filters you as you travel around the world.” Imran says he believes he is the first Pakistani and first Muslim to do the challenge and broke the record
for distance covered on just two tyres. In total, 33 countries were visited with some taking just a week to cycle through and others over a month. Most travel arrangements were organised in advance so visas and passports were predominantly not an issue until Imran arrived at the Georgian border. “Initially I was denied entry to Georgia despite having a passport,” he said. “I came back eight hours later and approached the same people with a new plan, still with my legal legislation in hand. “I faced barriers of discrimination and broke them down through card magic and clever diplomatic talking. It just showed that their border was a complete farce because they let me through because of some magic.” Each country brought with it highlights yet Imran says there is one nation which stands out above the rest. He continued: “Without doubt my
favourite country was Iran. It is marred with negativity yet I had heard many good accounts from travellers who went through the country before. “When I arrived, the hospitality was overwhelming. When you arrive
Sydney, Australia
in that country as a traveller you are seen as a gift from God. They cannot do enough for you.” Every night, Imran slept in different conditions, relying often on his tent carried on his bicycle. One night he was put up in a luxury mansion in Croatia and another he was being shot at in Bosnia. He explained: “One night we were cycling through this remote part of Bosnia and we needed some shelter. “At some point down this empty road we came across an abandoned house which only had hay and dried cowpat inside but we needed to get inside so just set up for the night there. “A little while later we heard this car engine outside and thought it was just going to fly past but we heard it come to a stop and the handbrake put on right outside the house. It scared the life out of me. “We hit the lights and got down, and the guy starts shouting. We didn’t really respond and then all of a sudden he fired a shot into the wall blindly. “We were just shouting ‘tourists’, ‘we are tourists’, which eventually they understood and insisted we could stay but we got out of there as soon as we could.” Imran finally completed his journey earlier this month but ensured there was one last extraordinary feat he completed before returning to Leeds – he tackled a thief. In Etampes, France, the returning cyclist saw a thief snatch a lady’s purse. Imran chased him down on his bike and even managed to reunite the victim with her belongings. The Roundhay resident is now planning on writing a book to share his experiences with the world. He can still be sponsored at www.mycharitywater.org/cycling theworld As for his next challenge, he says a cycle to Mecca in the next couple of years could be on the cards.

Football club’s security chief’s criminal past
Devilish Fraudster CONVICTED: Riyaz Patel, pictured here with Sir Alex Ferguson, was found guilty of 29 counts of theft in 2000
Manchester United may be one of the biggest football club’s in the world and it would be sensible to assume that the man in charge of 70,000-plus fans on a match day would be a fully credible employee... Wrong. Riyaz Patel, the man who oversees more than 1,000 stewards every weekend and is often seen around some of the team’s biggest stars, has a criminal record highlighting 29 counts of theft in 2000. In total he stole £26,000 from his brother’s post office where he was employed for six months and was found guilty of the crimes at Preston Crown Court on the turn of the century. He was not jailed following the guilty charge but was told he must do 100 hours of community service and repay a total of £11,000 of the cash taken. It was understood that he had been
spending much of the money on gambling in casinos and bingo. Patel is not directly employed by the Red Devils but works for the event security agency, ‘Controlled Events Solution’, who ensure the safety of patrons at Old Trafford. The business took over the contract in 2012 and their relationship with Manchester United is described on the company’s website as the longest standing client. A spokesperson for the club admitted that they were aware of Patel’s prior conviction yet insisted his role did not involve handling cash. A spokesperson said: “He is employed by CES - not Manchester United - to look after people not money. “It was a long time ago. He has his SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence, which shows he is not a concern to them.”

University of Manchester graduate killed in Gaza
TARGET: (above) The United Nations Relief and Works Agency vehicle was clearly labelled yet still got hit by Israeli shells
KILLED: (right) Bashir alHajjar had been living in Gaza when he was killed along with his brother, Muneer, last week
A former student at Manchester University, who went on to teach nursing at the Islamic University of Gaza, has been killed after his United Nations car was hit by Israeli fire. Dr Bashir al-Hajjar was killed after an Israeli assault in the north of the region Beer al-Naja alongside his younger brother, Muneer. The pair were travelling in a clearly marked UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) vehicle when shells landed both on the bonnet, and in front of the car, en route to Dr alHajjar’s home. Both were killed by the blast whilst Muneer’s eight-year-old son, who was also travelling in the car, was taken to
hospital with serious leg injuries. Dr al-Hajjar, whose only crime was treating the wounded in Gaza, leaves behind his wife and 13-year-old daughter at their family home in Rusholme, Manchester. The 47-year-old was killed on Tuesday 29th July just hours before a second UNRWA site found itself under Israeli fire, when a school sheltering refugees in Jabalia was hit killing 16 Palestinians and injuring 90. Dr Ramy Abdu, the Gaza-based chair of human rights group Euromid Observer, studied at the University of Manchester at the same time as Dr al-Hajjar and paid tribute
to his close friend. He said: “Bashir didn’t just want to contribute to the knowledge of Palestine, he wanted to contribute to the knowledge of the whole world. “He wanted to use the example of Palestine to show everyone how to avoid the suffering we have experienced. He was really intelligent, hard-working, very polite, not involved in politics at all.” It is reported that Mr al-Hajjar was contemplating moving back to the UK after his daughter, Sothia, completed secondary school. Thousands of people attended the brothers’ funerals hours after their deaths.

Whilst the passionate designer had travelled a lot before, the transition from the hot to the cold weather, and from one of the most densely populated cities in the world to Kent, was a massive shock. Chetna says she used baking as a way of embracing life in the UK, throwing herself into learning new skills, and combining her mum’s traditional recipes and flavours with British bakes

Her passion for cooking has remained and will be showcased to the world from next week. She is described as a creative yet meticulous baker and channels her huge artistic talent into her baking which she does for family and friends.

The Tory rightwinger had first won her seat as an MP in 2010 and has spoken frequently about her views for a tougher stance on crime and immigration. In 2011, she caused controversy after stating that there was still a place for the death penalty in modern society during an appearance on Question Time. She was promoted to her new role after Nicky Morgan, the former Financial Secretary to the Treasury, was named as the new Education Secretary.
Ms Morgan passes the charity brief onto her colleague who says she is looking forward to helping the British economy. She said: “It is a privilege to be appointed to this role and to work alongside the Chancellor to build on the success of this Government’s economic policies. “Over the last four years the deficit has been reduced, taxes have been cut and growth has returned to the economy. “The economy is in a far better shape than we inherited in 2010

DISAPPOINTED: Rabbi Jason Kleiman, from Bradford’s Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue, was critical of Mr Galloway’s comments
‘Hijacked’ peaceful protests with ‘intolerance’ One week on from George Galloway’s declaration of Bradford as an ‘Israel-free zone’, the Respect Party representative has not backed down from his claims. The controversial MP kicked off the row last week after speaking during a Palestine rally in Leeds where he also announced that he doesn’t want ‘any Israeli tourists to come to Bradford’ or ‘Israeli academics coming to the university or college’. Since the conflict began to escalate in Gaza and Israel last month, anti-Semitic crimes have
risen across the UK. Rabbi at the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue in Bradford, Rabbi Jason Kleiman, says he has not had any reports of such instances but added that Mr Galloway’s comments had created a ‘hostile’ environment for any Jews visiting the city. Rabbi Kleiman, who backed the proposal to fly the Palestine flag in Bradford in support of all the innocent civilians who had died in the conflict, also labelled Mr Galloway’s comments as ‘counterproductive’. “Such comments are
regrettable and do nothing at all to help with the current troubles and conflict in Gaza and Israel,” he said. “What Mr Galloway has said is counter-productive because at this moment we need a message of peace not violence. “In Bradford we have a wonderful example of religions living side by side, with the Muslim community even helping to save a synagogue a couple of years ago. “It is a shame Mr Galloway has now hijacked something which was about peace not violence with
a message of intolerance for Israel. I don’t believe many people will support his message and hope we can all look past it.” Meanwhile, an ‘evening with George Galloway’ which was set to take place in Belfast next weekend has been brought into doubt. The MP says he will not withdraw from the event yet members of Belfast City Council have said they are seeking legal advice after the event was opposed to by some unionist parties.
Ebola update: Death toll passes 1,000 As the number of people infected by the Ebola virus continues to rise, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that sufferers can be offered untested drugs in an attempt to hamper the outbreak. In Liberia, two infected doctors will be treated with the previously unproven medicine called ZMapp which has so far been given to a Spanish priest, who later died, and two US aid workers. As well as the danger of using unproven drugs, the scarcity of such medicine has also raised questions in West Africa about who gets priority access to the treatment. Since the first fatality last month,
Ebola has become the world’s largest and deadliest outbreak with the UN agency declaring the situation an international health emergency. To date, more than 1,000 people have died, with the majority coming from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with a further two dying in Nigeria. The suffering has been exacerbated by health services that are struggling to cope whilst the WHO have appealed for funds and medical staff to help supplement care in one of the world’s most deprived areas. Trials of vaccines are currently taking place around the world yet some could take years to be tested fully and proved successful.

Man sentenced over wife’s death SENTENCED: Danish Irfan will spend at least 16 years in prison before he can be considered for release after being found guilty of the murder of his wife, Ridda Zanab, last year
A husband, who fled to Pakistan after killing his partner, has been found guilty of murder following a trial at Bradford Crown Court earlier this week. 22-year-old Danish Irfan had already admitted to the manslaughter of his wife, Ridda Zanab, last year and it took the jury just two hours to decide upon the guilty verdict. Irfan will serve a minimum of 16 years before his release can be considered. Police were called to the couple’s house in Alford Terrace in the early hours of Monday 4th November last year, after receiving a report of concern for safety. When they gained entry to the property, they found the body of his 21-year-old wife in an upstairs bedroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene and it was later revealed that she had been struck with a claw hammer after Irfan found a text on her phone from another man. Detailed enquiries by West Yorkshire Police's Protective
Services Department revealed that the guilty party then fled to Pakistan, which led to the issue of an international arrest warrant. Irfan returned to the UK in February and was arrested on arrival at Manchester International Airport. Speaking after sentencing, Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley, of West Yorkshire Police's Protective Services Department, said: “Irfan brutally murdered his wife in the family home in Bradford and then fled to Pakistan in a bid to evade capture. “Following work with the international authorities, we were able to secure his voluntary return to the country to face justice. “He has today been found guilty of murdering Ridda Zanab and has been sentenced accordingly. “Our sympathies remain with Ridda's family and especially her young daughter, who will sadly grow up without her mother.”

The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has admitted killing her son at her trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Rosdeep Adekoya, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, a reduced charge from murder, when she appeared in court on Friday 25th July. Little Mikaeel was beaten over a prolonged period and killed by Adekoya before his body was wrapped in a duvet, stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in woodland 20 miles from the family home in Drylaw, Scotland. The toddler’s fatal beating came after the family visited Nando’s restaurant and Mikaeel was sick. He was beaten over a period of four days, between 12th and 15th January, with Adekoya pleading guilty to punching her son and causing his body to hit against a hard object or inflicting blunt injuries on his head and body The court heard how Adekoya had beaten her son regularly and her internet search history included hits such as ‘I find it hard to love my son’, ‘I love all of KILLED: Mikaeel Kular was killed by his my children except one’, ‘Why am I so mother, Rosdeep Adekoya, after four days of beatings in the family home in Drylaw aggressive with my son’ and ‘Get rid of before his body was dumped in woodland, bruises’. 20 miles from the family home The mother-of-five also admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice by contacting emergency services and claiming her son had walked out of the house overnight. His disappearance earlier this year led to a huge search by thousands of members of the public, who had initially been told that he had gone missing. It was two days later that the body was found in the woodland in Fife leading to nationwide grieving. Advocate depute Alex Prentice told the court: “The basis for the plea tendered being accepted is that the severe, fell short of the wicked Crown accepts that the accused had no recklessness required for murder.” intention to kill Mikaeel and that the Culpabale homicide, like murder, is a assault perpetrated upon him, although form of unlawful killing. Diggers try to reach more than 100 feared trapped in landslide Rescuers near Pune in Maharashtra, India have been digging through swirling mud to uncover dozens of submerged homes to find more than 100 people swallowed up by a landslide that flattened almost an entire village, with the confirmed death toll at 21. Teams of 42 rescue workers each worked through the night at Malin village but incessant rain, mud and poor communications in the remote area slowed their efforts to make their way into engulfed thatch huts and brick houses. The hillside above the village collapsed on Wednesday 29th July and heavy rain raised fears of another landslide, small streams continue to flow into the area from surrounding hills. The head of rescue operations at the National Disaster Response Force said 21 bodies had been recovered, with 129 people feared trapped under the mud that covered dozens of houses. "We have mapped the 46 houses and are trying to remove the mud from the most densely populated areas," said operations chief Alok Avasthy. The local school, one of the only roofed buildings to survive, was put into service as a makeshift shelter for rescue workers, while police were stationed in trucks to provide backup. Unprecedented rain in June last year wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand state in the Himalayas, causing rivers and lakes to burst their banks, inundating towns and villages and killing thousands. Environmentalists say construction of hydro-electric dams, involving blasting tunnels through mountains to carry diverted flows of water, deforestation and the spread of unregulated buildings along river banks magnify the impact of heavy rains.
FEAR: Pakistan acid attacks on women
A recent spate of acid attacks in Balochistan, Pakistan has sparked an impassioned debate about rising Islamisation that is forcing an increasing number of women to stay at home. The horrific crime, which disfigures and often blinds its overwhelmingly female victims, has long been used to settle personal or family scores with hundreds of cases reported every year. But two fresh attacks on consecutive days suggests a new pattern is emerging. Last week, two men on a motorcycle sprayed acid using syringes on two teenage girls who were returning from a market in Mastung town, 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the provincial capital Quetta. The day before, four women aged between 18 and 50 had suffered the same fate in Quetta, in the

market area of Sariab. They were partially burned. "In accordance with our Baluch traditions, they were wrapped in big shawls as well as covering their faces. That... saved (them) from severe injuries," said Naz Bibi, mother of two of the victims. Asked about the attackers, she said: "I can only request that they should not treat women in such a cruel way." In most acid attack cases around Pakistan, the majority of victims know their attackers.
When caught, relatives found guilty speak of punishing their victims for having sullied their "honour" or that of their family with "indecent" behaviour. However, in these latest cases the victims had no known connection to their assailants, which has led campaigners to suggest the attacks are part of rising religious extremism in the province. "The aim of these inhuman acts is to prevent women from participating in education, as well as social, political and economic aspects of life by creating a climate of
terror," said Jahanzaib Jamaldini, vice president of the Baloch National Party, which is fighting for greater autonomy. This week, three more women suffered injuries to their legs and feet in yet another attack, though police and senior officials have so far said the latest incident was a case of a "family feud". In the Sariab district of Quetta, the scene of one of last week's attacks, Islamist groups like the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jammat (ASWJ), are increasingly coming to the fore. Dressed in Arab garb, they are able to roam the
area armed with automatic weapons without fear of molestation -- leading many to believe they are given tacit state backing. The first recorded acid attack in Baluchistan came in 2010, with two more reported in 2012. Recount to begin Afghanistan elections finally make ground After one of the most disruptive election processes possible, the race for the Afghan Presidential seat took a small step forward this week as it was announced that votes were to start being recounted. An audit of millions of votes will once again be sorted to determine the future
president of the country, after an initial count had been marred by allegations of massive fraud. The ballots which are found guilty of such action will be disqualified meaning the process will take weeks to complete. Afghanistan has already been forced to wait to hear who will be only the second leader of the nation since the 2001-US led invasion that ousted the Taliban, with Hamid Karzai stepping down. Preliminary results from the 14th June runoff vote showed former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai well ahead of his rival, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, but both sides alleged fraud. After an audit of eight-million votes previousy, both parties made calls of corruption despite Ahmadzai’s substantial lead.

As the world’s population continues to connect with others across the globe, China has announced plans to create new railways to the borders of India, Bhutan and Nepal. Plans were reported on Thursday which would see the current line, running to Tibet,

The head of the Afghan Independent Election Commission and the chief U.N. envoy to Afghanistan said the sides have now agreed on new criteria, allowing the audit to go forward. “On Saturday, we will restart the auditing and we kindly request the candidates, their team representatives and all other stakeholders involved in the auditing to fully cooperate with the Independent Election Commission in implementing this framework and finishing the process,” Commission chairman Ahmad Yousuf Nouristani said at a joint news conference with U.N. envoy Jan Kubis. The voting process has so far stemmed almost four months with the initial votes taking place as far back as 5th April. It had been hoped that the process would have been a smooth one which showed how far the nation had advanced since the days of the Taliban. Yet this has not been the case with the democratic process still apparently suffering from teething problems in the country.
officially opened in 2006, and passes through icy peaks on the Tibetan highlands, reaching top heights of 5,000m above sea level. The Global Times have also reported further plans in regard to current developments which are likely to open next month. Currently, the line runs up to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa but an extension through to Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Tibetan Buddhism’s second-highest figure, is set to be completed. That link is also reportedly scheduled for its own extension during the 20162020 period, to two separate points, one on the border of
Nepal and the other on the border with India and Bhutan. Critics of the railway have argued that the line is likely to bring in migrants who threaten to disrupt the Tibetan’s cultural identity. The Chinese announcement coincides with a drive by India, under its new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to consolidate its influence with its smaller neighbours. Modi's foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, headed to Nepal this Friday with a proposed pact to help develop the Himalayan country's hydroelectric power potential high on the agenda.

Muslim comedian Jay Islaam wins national comedy award
“Breakthrough Act of the Year” A Muslim comic bested more than a hundred other gagmerchants to claim a national award for comedy. Jay Islaam, who has been performing stand-up for less than a year, triumphed over dozens of far more experienced acts to take the trophy at the competition final in Nottinghamshire last week. He received a cash prize as well as the accolade “Breakthrough Act 2014” – as awarded by FAF Comedy. “It still hasn’t quite sunk in,” said Islaam on reacting to the result. “The competition had an incredibly strong line-up, including scores of acts I have admired for a long time. “This is my first major award, and it’s come at a time when I was reconsidering whether to carry on pursuing comedy as a career. “I’m now certain that stand-up is what I was always meant to be doing, and I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead on the comedy circuit.” The Breakthrough Act competition was open to comedians from across the UK, and the heats welcomed acts from as far afield as the West Country, Yorkshire, the Home Counties and Scotland. More than one hundred
performers applied to take part this year. The highest scoring acts from heats that took place in the late spring progressed to last week’s final, where they performed to an audience of more than fifty. Six official judges, including several comedy professionals, scored all ten finalists, with their aggregated scores deciding the winner. Speaking on behalf of FAF Comedy Clubs, Director Stewart Coleman commented: “Our 2014 competition was a closely contested affair that will likely provide the launchpad for some very talented British acts. “The final proved to be an incredible night of laughs and entertainment. Jay Islaam was a deserved winner – albeit by a single point!!” In the last year, Islaam has performed at some of the most prestigious comedy venues, and festivals, across the country including appearances at the world-famous Comedy Store. Next month he takes his first one-man show to the world’s largest arts festival – the Edinburgh Fringe. He’s already amassed a large online following and you can keep up with his work through his Twitter account @jayislaam.

‘Dard’ by Ali Romeo After creating a buzz in the industry with tracks such as ‘London Girl’ and his debut single ‘Mahi’, Ali Romeo is back in the charts once again. Ali Romeo returned to Australia after a promising start within the British Asian music industry, to work on his upcoming album, which is planned to be released later this year. The concept, lyrics and composition were all crafted by Ali, with renowned producer Kam Frantic creating the sound. “I’d say this song took no
more than seven days to write, because I have been through a similar phase myself. The melody and lyrics have been kept very commercial on purpose; for this reason I feel that lot of people will also be able to relate to this track,’’ says Ali. The concept for this song revolves around an isolated person who once believed in the kindness of humanity and had a firm faith that if you do good, good things will happen, but everything changes. “After ‘Mahi’ and ‘London
Girl’ I was busy doing shows all over the UK,” adds Ali. “However, I was more concerned about releasing my album. So for that simple reason, I took a break from touring, and came back to Australia to start working on my album.’’ The video to ‘Dard’ has already been shot in Dubai and Australia and compliments the song pleasantly. ‘Dard’ is set to release on the 14th August on VIP Records and looks set to be one of this year’s biggest ballads.
‘Swag’ with Kayrun ft Jaswinder Daghamia
This highly talented, London-born producer/musician has just released a massive dance
floor track set to have you boogying. “Swag” came about with a simple but effective hook, which
turned into a track when London writer Balkar Laltonwala built the song around Kayrun’s original take. Predominantly a bhangra track - this fun mid-tempo track has been sung by none other than Jaswinder Daghamia who has a few hits under his belt. The video was shot in Kayrun’s hometown of Slough, with his vision the video has an upbeat and fun feel to it being based around a house party which gets out of control while parents are away. A fun, light and humorous concept really makes this Ballistic Production, directed by Kully Ghataore, video stand out.

Back in the Race T
he British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (Bapio) was recently unsuccessful in its Judicial Review claim against the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the General Medical Council (GMC), the doctors' regulatory body. Racial discrimination allegations sparked the Judicial Review claim in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Bapio began its legal battle against the RCGP and the GMC due to claims that the RCGP’s membership exam, the MRCGP, which doctors must pass to practise as a GP in the UK, discriminates against ethnic minority candidates. Bapio’s allegations against the RCGP (which conducts the exam) and the GMC (which is accountable for ensuring a fair process), included evidence that white candidates are four times more likely to pass the exam first time than minority ethnic candidates trained in the UK, and 14 times more likely than candidates trained overseas. Particular emphasis was drawn to the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA), where students are examined on their ability to demonstrate effective communication with patients and colleagues. At the Judicial Review hearing, Mr Justice Mitting rejected the claim by Bapio that the CSA should be declared unlawful. He found that the RCGP was neither racially discriminatory nor in breach of its public sector equality duty. Mr Justice Mitting said the claim had been brought in good faith and in the public interest. He then expressed hope that the case would lead to progress:
“The bringing of this claim is likely, in the end, to bring something of benefit to the medical profession.” Mr Justice Mitting found that there was a disparity in results between different ethnic groups and stated that the RCGP must take action. He then expressed words of warning: “If it does not act and its failure to act is the subject of a further challenge in the future, it may well be that it will be held to have breached its duty,” he said. “But, as of now, I am satisfied that it's not in breach of its duty.” Mr Justice Mitting concluded by describing the outcome for Bapio as ‘if not a legal victory then a moral success’. Bapio president Dr Ramesh Mehta expressed hope in the judge’s remarks: “Although we may have lost the battle at this time, we feel we have won the war because the Judge has also said to the RCGP that they must now take action.” Whilst Bapio is undoubtedly disappointed with the judgment it seems that there could be a brighter future ahead for those ethnic minorities due to sit the examination. Mr Justice Mitting’s judgment could be seen as an invitation for Bapio to initiate further Judicial Review proceedings should the RCGP fail to take action to reduce the disparity in the results of the examination. This would not have been achieved without Bapio’s Judicial Review claim. We at Blacks have experience in handling Judicial Review proceedings and Medical Practice Law.

New sanctions brought in this past week will see businesses, found to be employing illegal workers, handed tougher penalties in the form of higher fines. Previously, a business owner would be fined a maximum of £10,000 for providing work for such an employee yet that has now doubled in an attempt to stamp out the crime. New measures have also been introduced to ensure businesses don’t unintentionally hire an illegal worker. An interactive online tool, available at www.gov.uk/legal-rightwork-uk, has been launched to help employers establish if an applicant has the right to work in the UK simply by answering a few ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said it was crucial to increase the punishment for employers who break the law as it also has an effect
STRICT: James Brokernshire, Immigration and Security Minister, said the new £20,000 fine for hiring illegal workers is vital to help deter illegal immigration
on the wider community. He said: “Illegal working is a key driver of illegal immigration. It is not a victimless crime. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and
cheats job seekers out of employment opportunities. “Doubling the maximum penalty for those who hire illegal workers sends out a strong message to those who break the rules. “At the same time as getting tougher on rogue employers, we want to support legitimate ones by making it easier for them to check the immigration status of potential employees by using our new online tool.” If an employer is convicted of ‘knowingly employing’ an illegal worker, they may be sentenced for up to two years’ imprisonment and/or receive an unlimited fine, with business details having the possibility of being published by the Home Office. Meat scare ‘hurts’ fast food giants China's latest food scare, which saw a number of McDonald’s restaurants in the region forced to temporarily pull meat items from menus, has ‘hurt’ the fast food giants according to a representative. An undercover local Chinese TV report, on 20th July, showed workers at Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd using expired meat and doctoring food production dates. Regulators immediately closed the factory, which is part of OSI Group LLC, a US. food supplier and important McDonald's partner. A statement on behalf of McDonald's read: “While this matter will negatively impact results in the near
term, we cannot reasonably estimate the impact on full year 2014 earnings at this time.” McDonald's warning on Monday came just days
after rival Yum Brands Inc, which has about 6,400 restaurants in China and whose KFC is the biggest Western brand in the country, also said the scandal was driving China’s customers away.
McDonald's, which has just over 2,000 restaurants in China, said shares dropped 0.5 percent to $93.86 at mid-afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange, whilst shares of McDonald's and Yum have fallen 5.2 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively, since the scandal broke last month. Japan’s McDonald’s headquarters withdrew its full-year earnings forecast on 29th July after the China meat scare caused sales to drop 15 to 20 percent on a daily basis. The company, which has more than 3,100 restaurants in Japan, previously had forecast an operating profit of almost £70m.

BMW have just launched its i8 - a plug-in hybrid performance vehicle that uses a three cylinder turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine in a package that takes BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy to a new high. Bringing together hallmark BMW dynamics, lightweight design and efficiency, BMW states that the 2+2-seater i8 is a newgeneration sports car. The length, width and height of the BMW i8, is in keeping with typical sports car proportions, and its compact construction allows the front and rear sections of the car to be particularly low-slung and thus accentuating the car’s dynamically stretched flanks. The dihedral doors open forwards
and upwards, adding intrigue to the design. The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure, for which BMW is renowned. It was purpose-designed as a plug-inhybrid sports car offering agile performance, near 50:50 weight distribution and outstanding efficiency. Its also the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine. This highly turbocharged unit is equipped with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with highprecision injectors positioned between the valves, along with Valvetronic. The low roll torque is further reduced by a balancer shaft, while a multi-stage damper integrated in the automatic transmission ensures very smooth and refined running at low RPM.
This three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 231hp and drives the rear wheels, while a maximum torque of 320Nm is available from 3,700rpm. The car’s second power source is a 96 kW/131hp hybrid synchronous electric motor which sends its power to the front axle. The motor develops 250Nm torque from a standstill. As well as providing a power boost to assist the petrol engine during acceleration, the electric motor can also power the vehicle by itself with a range in everyday driving of up to 22 miles and a top speed of 75mph on electric power alone, drawing its energy from a lithium-ion battery. Developed by BMW Group, the highvoltage battery has a liquid cooling system, offers a maximum usable capacity of five kilowatt hours and can be recharged from a
conventional household power socket, at a BMW i Wallbox or at a public charging station. The battery can also be recharged via the electric motor on the overrun. The rear wheels of the BMW i8 are driven by the petrol engine via a six-speed automatic transmission, while the front wheels receive their power from the electric motor via a two-stage automatic transmission. Combined maximum output of 362hp and combined peak torque of 570Nm provide all-wheel-drive performance which is as dynamic as it is efficient. Utilising both power sources enables the sprint from zero to 62mph takes just 4.4 seconds, going on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. All the while combined fuel consumption stands at 135mpg and CO2 emissions come in at 49g/km.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of MercedesAMG GmbH comments: "There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. “For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S 65 AMG Coupé. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupé surpasses even the highest of expectations." Following the S 65 AMG, the SL 65 AMG and the G 65 AMG, the new S 65 AMG Coupé is the fourth AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine. No other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as Mercedes-AMG. Back in 2003 the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupé with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL 65 AMG (C215 model series). Its successor, the CL 65 AMG (C216 model series) was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S 65 AMG Coupé.

Aided by the Sport Chrono Package Plus incorporating dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), the 911 Turbo S can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 197 mph. The benchmark lap time around the NürburgringNordschleife is 7 min 27 secs. To this, the 911 Turbo S Exclusive GB Edition adds unique features carefully chosen to build on the compelling dynamic attributes and iconic silhouette of the standard coupé. Taking their cue from subtle styling motifs of the original 911 Turbo ‘930’ from 1974, the limited edition stands out clearly as the ultimate – and most exclusive – ‘Type 991’ 911.

Land Rover is introducing a comprehensive suite of updates to Range Rover and Range Rover Sport for 2015 model year, reaffirming their status as one of the world’s best luxury and premium sporting SUVs, unrivalled in their breadth of capability, both on- and off-road. The potent SDV8 now produces 339PS and 740Nm – a 40Nm increase – with a fuller torque curve from 1700 to 3300rpm thanks to detailed calibration changes. This improves in-gear acceleration by up to 6.5% from fifth to eighth gear, ensuring effortless overtaking ability and enhanced towing capability. The ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox has been re-engineered with a revised torque converter incorporating a twin-spring damper. Despite such a large increase in torque, the SDV8’s fuel economy and CO2 emissions remain unchanged at 32.5mpg and 229g/km CO2. Updated puddle lamps now project each vehicle’s silhouette onto the ground at night to light the way for occupants. Fixed panoramic roofs with power blinds are now available and bring an additional sense of space and light to both vehicles’ luxurious interiors. Meanwhile, for Range Rover, 19-inch alloy wheels with a Satin Dark Grey finish introduce a stylish option for buyers wishing to use smaller wheels where conditions and surfaces may prove more challenging.
Land Rover introduces updates for Range Rover & Range Rover Sport 2015 models
An updated colour palette features Aruba silver and Kaikoura Stone, and longwheelbase derivatives can be specified with a sophisticated 22-inch alloy wheel for the first time. Land Rover InControl™ Remote and InControl Secure are now available on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport derivatives as standard. InControl Remote includes an integrated SOS Emergency Call, Optimised Land Rover Assistance and a Smartphone App which enables you to connect remotely with your vehicle wherever you are. InControl Secure tracks the vehicle should it be stolen. InControl Apps and InControl Wi-Fi are new Land Rover InControl technologies which debut on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport derivatives. InControl Apps allows owners to sync smartphone apps to the vehicle’s touchscreen, and is compatible with Apple and Android smartphones. InControl Wi-Fi provides instant in-car access to a mobile hotspot, which allows up to eight devices to be used simultaneously. The system provides superior signal quality compared to an independent smartphone hotspot using the customer’s existing data plan through a duplicate sim card. The 2015 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available to order from 16th July.

SUPPORT: Sepp Blatter says he is excited about the prospect of bringing football to more than one-billion Indians

With the Indian Super League (ISL) set to launch in less than two months time, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has labelled the nation ‘another market’ which he says will completely fall in love with the beautiful game. Back in 2007, during a visit to India, Blatter labelled the country a ‘sleeping giant’ in the world of football and called for ‘wide scale reforms and greater professionalism’ in an attempt to promote the game at all levels. With the creation of the ISL, the controversial character says the nation is on the right path to success
backing to ‘sleeping giants’ similar to that seen in China in recent years. “Football has to keep on spreading throughout the world. We have seen success with the professional league in China, but in September I can inform you that we will have a professional soccer league in India,” Blatter said to the SportsBusiness International
magazine. “This is another market for football - not a financial market but another market to grow our sport. There are 1.3 billion people in India, that's 1.3 billion people who want to play football now,” added the head of world football's governing body. “Obviously, they like cricket and
it's a good sport; let them play it, but it's not as good as football,” Blatter went on to say while addressing more than 400 people at the Master Alumni Association in Rio de Janeiro during the World Cup last month. The league has already signed up established stars such as Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg, Joan
Capdevila, David Trezeguet and Bojan Djordjic to name a few. Organised by IMG-Reliance, and supported by the All India Football Federation, eight teams will complete in the inaugural season kicking off on 12th October. 22 players will compete in each team, which will include 10 foreign players, and one ‘marquee’ player. Each franchise will also include eight domestic players and four local players from the catchment area in the under-23 category. The eight teams set to compete in the first season are: Atletico de Kolkata, Kerala Blasters FC, Delhi Dynamos FC, NorthEast United FC, Team Pune, Team Mumbai, Team Goa and Team Bengaluru.

Disabled coach lands job with Premier League giants
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
‘This is just the beginning’ Back page story continued Speaking about what his role will involve, Sohail explained: “Basically I will be joining the soccer schools side of the club whereby we go into schools across Manchester and work with the kids to teach them about football and of course Manchester United. “It’s really about working with the community and I am so appreciative to have got the job but for me, it is just the beginning.” Sohail says he hopes to become the first disabled football manager in the top four tiers of England and has his eyes set on completing his next coaching badge, the UEFA B licence, in the near future. “It is a great feeling to be part of this club,” he said. “The main goal is to get into management and then into the football league but I appreciate this opportunity
so much as my first professional venture into the game. “Manchester United is the biggest club in the world so to have been successful in my application was amazing and not something that happens every day.” He added: “It certainly doesn’t do any harm to have Manchester United on your CV.” A spokesman for the club said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Sohail to Manchester United, his determination to reach a unique role in football is an example to us all. “In the face of great adversity Sohail has shown that hard work and determination counts for everything in overcoming obstacles. Since coming to the training ground, everyone at Manchester United has welcomed Sohail with open arms.”
Ban UPHELD Luis Suarez’s biting ban has been upheld following his appeal on Thursday yet the Uruguayan striker has now been told he can train with Barcelona. The forward, who was suspended from all football, and couldn’t even enter a stadium initially, was handed a four month ban after biting Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match in Brazil. Following his £75million move to Barcelona last month, he had been forced to stay away from his new teammates by sanctions handed down by FIFA. However, following his appeals process, the 27-year-old has now been told he can join the squad in match preparations. A statement released by the Court of Arbitration for Sport read: “The sanctions imposed on the
player by FIFA have been generally confirmed. “However, the four-month suspension will apply to official matches only and no longer to other football-related activities (such as training, promotional activities and administrative matters). “It has however considered that the stadium ban and the ban from ‘any football-related activity’ were excessive given that such measures are not appropriate to sanction the offence committed by the player and would still have an impact on his activity after the end of the suspension.” Suarez’s ban will finish on 25th October, just one day before Barcelona face off against Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) have banned England batsman Moeen Ali from wearing wristbands featuring the slogans ‘Save Gaza’ and ‘Free Palestine’. Ali, 27, who is Muslim and of Pakistani descent, wore the wristbands on the second day of the third test (Monday 28th July), against India at Southampton. His wristbands were only on public display for just over 40 minutes while he made 12 runs off 28 balls before he was caught off India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Though Ali was backed by the England and Wales Cricket Board, he was told by match referee David Boon - the former Australia batsman who is the ICC’s match referee, to remove the wristband and not wear them again while playing for England.
The ICC regulations prohibit players from displaying political, religious or racial statements on their clothing and equipment while taking part in international matches. England had cleared Ali to wear the bands, arguing that he was making a humanitarian statement and not a political one. The ban has been deemed “controversial” as the whole team wore the logo of the Help for Heroes charity on their shirts on Tuesday 29th July to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the first world war. But the ICC issued the following statement: “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match. “Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that while he is free to express his views on such causes away from
“Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that while he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match.”

the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match.” Moeen, who has been involved in helping raise funds in his home city Birmingham for charities working to raise funds for Gaza relief efforts, has had the backing of his team. England and Wales Cricket have said that ‘as far as we are concerned, he has not committed any offence,’ adding it was up to the ICC to decide what action, if any, Ali should face. Nevertheless, other cricketers expressed their support of Ali on social media. “We have always worn wristbands or ribbons when showing support 4an incident or raising awareness,we do it for animal rights too,y not humans,” wrote former Pakistan cricketer Azhar Mahmood on Twitter. “Absolutely love this! Well done Moeen bro! Keep showing your support! #Pray4Gaza” wrote England cricketer Ajmal Shahzad. “Good on brother mo! #prayforGaza” wrote Lancashire and former England bowler Kabir Ali. On Friday, Malaysian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang was warned he risked being thrown out of the Commonwealth Games if he repeated wearing gloves bearing the message ‘Save Gaza’. Awang could have been ejected from the 2014 Glasgow Games after wearing the gloves in competition on Thursday. Instead the 26-year-old was given a reprimand and warned not to wear them again. The Commonwealth Games Federation seeks to avoid its competitions being used for political means. Though Awang insisted his message was ‘humanitarian’ rather than politicallycharged, he issued an apology.
