With Britain’s counter-terrorism police concerned that British men involved in aid work for Syria may return to the UK radicalised by hardline Islamists, charities are now being scruitinized about aid or money going out to international conflict zones. With the climate being tense since former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Moazzam Begg arrested and charged earlier this year with terrorism offences, his supporters maintain that he was merely carrying out humanitarian work in Syria. Majid Freeman, a 26-year-old British born from Leicester, is as determined as ever to continue his humanitarian work with a registered charity.

A group of uniformed far-right activists who visited ten mosques across Bradford, carrying out a ‘Christian Crusade’ and handing out Army Bibles to Imams, have said that they are not against Muslims. The representatives of Britain First who were dressed in matching flatcaps and green jackets embossed with the party logo stating: "Taking our country back" had filmed themselves randomly talking about ‘Muslim grooming gangs’ and had even told one Muslim man to ‘reject the false prophet Mohammed and read the Bible’.Led by Paul Golding, a former BNP councilor, during their unprovoked visit to Bradford, they turned up at the doorstep of Bradford Lord Mayor Khadim Hussain’s house demanding to see him on what he was doing to combat child sexual exploitation in the Muslim community. Group that targeted Bradford on ‘Christian Crusade’ say they ‘don’t hate Muslims’ right-wing action and was coordinated with almost military precision. Now this week, the actions of the Britain First members have been slammed by Secretary of State for Communities Rt Hon. Eric Pickles MP and MP Stephen Williams - the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, who has responsibility for Community Cohesion. Though Britain First, an offshoot of BNP, haven’t broken any laws per se, the unprovoked invasion of several mosques by the group has raised questions as to where the law stands on intimidation. MP David Ward and Zulfi Karim from the Bradford Council for Mosques led on the talks concerning what immediate actions could be put in place to help alleviate any community concerns and what steps could be implemented to ensure that all local religious institutions can deal with any future attacks. The Communities Secretary confirmed that he will be speaking to the Home Secretary to try to ascertain what measures needed to be put in place to ensure that the Police can take effective action in the future to prevent such incidences occurring. Britain First, speaking to the Asian Express, said that they are

fuelled by the breakdown of society and failure of politics in Britain. “We’re a group of people who abhor the effects of binge drinking, mindless racist actions as well as grooming and FGM,” say Britain First spokesperson James Dowson, also considered the founder of the group. He added: “We believe that even if every single immigrant left this country, this country would still be on it’s knees because of the politicians that have failed us. “We don’t have anything against the vast majority of law-abiding Muslims but we feel that they are not addressing issues such as grooming which is led by Asian gangs. “Let me put it this way, I’d prefer a devout Muslim attending his mosque rather than hanging

Whispers are that British actress Emma Watson is in talks to possibly star in a new Bollywood movie. It’s being said that the Harry Potter ‘Hermine Granger’ has been approached by the nephew of famous Indian actor Dev Anand - Shekhar Kapur who is a celebrated producer and director in the Indian film industry. INTERESTING: Nephew of Kapur has worked on both Bollywood and Hollywood famous Indian actor Dev Anand, movies in the past, including Shekhar Kapur has approached his Oscar-nominated biopic of Emma Watson with Aditiya Elizabeth I, The Golden Age, Chopra to star in his next film starring Cate Blanchett. Word is that Emma has been asked to play a central role in Kapur’s latest film ‘Paani’, which stars Sushant Singh Rajput. While more details of ‘Paani’ expected very soon, we know that it’s being produced under the ‘Yash Raj Films’ banner and the story is a sci-fi romance set in the future when the earth's water supply has run out. Interestingly, John Travolta has also revealed that he’d been offered a role for the film. Commenting at the recent International Indian Film Academy awards (IIFA) at Tampa Bay, Florida, which he attended, he said that he has known Kapur for some time and that he is “open to working in Hindi films if I like the story and my part." While it is yet to be seen if Emma is up for the odd ‘dhumkha’ here and there… we’ll let you know when we know more.

Wife of legendary Yash Chopra to remember his life and work

Wife of legendary Bollywood filmmaker in conversation with Professor Rachel Dwyer as part of 16th London Asian Film Festival. The death of Yash Chopra in 2012 left the Bollywood film industry bereft of its most iconic filmmaking talent. Now the life and work of the legendary writer, director and producer is set to come into focus during a unique event on 07 June, as part of the 16th annual Tongues on Fire London Asian Film Festival: Europe's oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian arts and cinema. 'Remembering Yash Chopra' will see Pam Chopra, the late director's wife, in conversation with Rachel Dwyer, the respected Professor of Indian Cultures and Cinema at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and an authority on the work of Yash Chopra, having penned a comprehensive biography on the filmmaker a decade before his passing. Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who appeared in a string of Yash Chopra productions, including such famous films as 'Darr', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Mohabbatein' and 'Lamhe', to name but a few, will also make a special appearance during the event, to be held at the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London. The evening promises a unique and unprecedented insight into the two most important aspects of Yash Chopra's life: his cinema and his family.

Pam Chopra, who married Yashji in 1970, was the filmmaker's closest confidante and most scrupulous critic and worked variously as a producer, writer and costume designer on a number of her husband's most memorable hits, including 'Kabhie Kabhie', ' Silsila' and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'; all that whilst forging a successful career in her own right as a playback singer. Mrs Chopra's tete-a-tete with Professor Dwyer will be preceded by a documentary short film written and directed by award-winning Delhi-based documentary filmmaker Vinky Singh. Titled 'The Master Stroke', Singh's film delves into Yashji's use of the 'Navarasa' - the nine essential emotional themes that are the fundamental building blocks of Indian art - in the unforgettable and timeless music that became the cornerstone of his films. It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, yet a couple’s wedding plans were soon sent into disarray after a fallout with their photographer led to court appearances and no footage from their big day. Now, Vipul Ladwa and his wife, Jaspreet Kaur Ladwa, are warning other couple’s to beware when booking photographers as wedding season approaches once again. “Nobody should be put through the ordeal we have been through at that time in their lives,” Mrs Ladwa said. “We have no professional photos or footage from our civil ceremony and hopefully by telling others our story, it won’t happen again.” The West-Midlands couple, both 27-years-old, were married more than two years ago yet have been caught up in a legal battle since then, trying to retrieve photos and video from their special day. After booking a local photographer to capture the most important moments from their civil ceremony, and the Indian wedding which followed a few weeks later, Mr and Mrs Ladwa say they were extremely happy. The owner of the company, who cannot be named, had done the photography of Jaspreet’s parents around 30 years ago and so they were convinced that the right choice had been made. “Ever since I was a little girl I had always wanted them to do my wedding photos,” Mrs Ladwa said. “It had such a sentimental feel to it and he was so nice at the start that everything just seemed so right. “We agreed a verbal contract right there and then and he said we didn’t even have to sign anything which was another bonus.” Yet, as the couple began to plan their wedding’s finer details, they allege that the professionalism of their chosen photographer began to deteriorate. Terms of the contract were supposedly changed from initial proposals, reducing the number of photos and length of video available, yet both parties remained happy with the outcome. The photographer took the photos and video on the day of the civil ceremony as planned yet Mrs Ladwa states that she believed he was ‘rude’ and ‘unprofessional’

when talking to a family friend also taking photos. She said: “He was very aggressive towards one of our family friends who was taking pictures on the day. “He seemed to think that we would be going over the limit of photos and that is why our friend was doing pictures but they wouldn’t have been anywhere near the quality of a professional. “Five days after the ceremony we went down to the business to select the 150 photos we wanted for our album from more than 1,000 taken on the day. “It took us more than half a day to do it but we were happy enough to do so, and got told they would be ready in four to six weeks.” Two weeks before the next event, the Indian wedding, Mrs Ladwa states that she received a phone call from the photographer ‘demanding money’ and said she was told she would have to select her photos again. After doing so, the West Midlands resident says she then began to get stressed about the wedding day. “It was just a distraction we did not need at that time,” she said. “A couple of days later he phoned again to demand the money. He shouted down the phone at my mother and hung up on her, then wouldn’t answer any of our calls. “It was all so upsetting that I didn’t feel I could see him on my wedding day so we asked him to cancel the photography for the Indian wedding and we would just pay him for the civil ceremony footage, which must have been 90 per cent complete by that stage.” The couple booked a separate photographer for the Indian wedding yet explained how further problems developed shortly after. Mrs Ladwa added: “A fortnight after our Indian wedding, we were told that our [initial photographer] was attempting to sue us for 75per cent of a cancellation fee as well as the full cost of the Indian wedding photo-shoot. “We were taken to court where he was told he had no claim and was forced to pay our court fees and give our deposit back. “We still offered to pay him the full amount for the photos and video which he had captured from our ceremony but he still won’t do it.” Vipul and Jaspreet do have photos and video from their Indian wedding, which they say they now ‘cherish even more’, and hope to one day be reunited with their civil ceremony footage.

They praised Dr Abbas Khan, the British doctor who was alleged to have been murdered by Assad forces in Aleppo, Syria, but now are stopping us from giving aid to the very colleagues and hospital he worked in Syria;” comments Majid. “The Government is cracking down on us as they can’t differentiate between aid workers and fighters who have gone abroad. “As humanitarian workers our position is to help people and give aid to whoever is in need, whether they are Christian, Muslim or any other faith.” Majed believed that a change in Government position on Syria, in light of the failure of the Western backed Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and the rise of and the rise of Islamic groups has made their

work questionable. Majid has also been harassed by officers working on the ‘Prevent Project’, a Labour government initiative set out in 2008 that aimed at tackling ‘extremism. “First they praised me when they met me for my work and asked me questions about my aid activities. “As soon as I went out to Syria, they visited my family and put emotional pressure by citing that ‘Majid’s life is in danger’. They harassed my family, and put me under pressure through family to stop this aid work.” Young Muslims in Britain are increasingly facing such pressures with the narrative of ‘extremism’ and ‘Syria’ continuously being churned out by Politicians, think tanks and the media. “Take the word ‘Syria’ and ‘Muslim’ out of the sentence and then describe our work - people will be hailed as ‘heroes’,” said Majid.

Students and staff at a city secondary school will celebrate a milestone in a £10million building project at an event later this week. Sir Jonathan North Community College, in Knighton, is the latest school to benefit from Leicester City Council’s £350milllion Building Schools for the Future programme. Cllr Vi Dempster, Assistant City Mayor for children, young people and schools, joined school staff, students and invited guests on May 15th to celebrate the opening of the new Latimer Building and mark the completion of the first phase of the £10milllion transformation. The Latimer Building includes new classrooms, which will house the science and maths curriculum teams, as well as a new kitchen and dining area. It also features a bright, two-storey atrium which can be used for teaching, exhibitions or events. The atrium is fitted with specialist audio visual equipment for large scale projections and visual arts. This is the first phase of work at Sir Jonathan North Community College. A new reception area and offices are now being built on the site of the school’s old gymnasium. Work to build a new gym will begin later in the year and this, along with general refurbishment of the existing school buildings, should be complete by spring 2015. Students have now begun their lessons in the new building. Alison Merrills, principal at Sir Jonathan North Community College, said: “The recently opened new facilities are already having a really positive impact on students’ overall learning experience. We’ve had a fantastic response. The students like the space, light and colour and the calm and purposeful atmosphere this helps to create. “We are all now very excited about how the building project is progressing.” Assistant City Mayor Cllr Vi Dempster said: “This school is undergoing a really exciting transformation as part of our Building Schools for the Future programme. “I’m really pleased that work on the site is going well. The project has already provided fantastic new learning facilities for students and staff, and the next phases of work will just build further on these ambitious improvements.” Leicester City Council, through the Leicester Miller Education Company partnership, is delivering the £350milllion Building Schools for the Future programme which will rebuild or refurbish all secondary and special schools in the city. It is the largest capital investment programme in the city for 50 years.

A veteran BBC local radio DJ has lost his job after playing a song on his golden oldies show containing a racist word. BBC Radio Devon DJ David Lowe, 68, said he was unaware that a 1932 version of 'The Sun Has Got His Hat On' included the ‘n-word’. Lowe, a broadcaster for 32 years, said it was an ‘innocent mistake’. He said BBC bosses declined his idea of an on-air apology, and his offer to "fall on my sword" was accepted. The BBC said it accepted that the situation could have been handled better, and offered freelance Lowe his job back. But the DJ said that the incident had exacerbated a stressrelated condition and he would not be returning to the BBC.

Award-winning child trafficking drama to open

16th annual London Asian Film Festival 'Lakshmi', a hard-hitting drama about child trafficking in India, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, will open the this year’s London Asian Film Festival (LAFF).

The film is based on the real-life story of an impoverished 14-yearold girl kidnapped from her village in Andra Pradhesh and forced into prostitution and who eventually testified in court against her traffickers. 'Lakshmi' will have its European premier on June 1st at LAFF, Europe's oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian cinema. Acclaimed Indian writer and director Kukunoor, known for his work predominantly in Parallel cinema, will travel to London for the occasion and take part in an exclusive tete-a-tete following the screening on June 1st at the capital's historic Tricycle Theatre. 'Lakshmi' stars newcomer Monali Thakur in the central role, as well as Indian TV stalwart Ram Kapoor and veteran Bollywood star Satish Kaushik who was also part of the film's production team. The film had its world premier in January at the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival 2014 where it won the Audience Award for 'Best Narrative Feature'. Director Kukunoor has been praised by critics and audiences

Amir Khan visits Bradford Amir ‘King’ Khan paid a special visit to Bradford last weekend as he was the guest of honour at the opening of My Lahore’s new look restaurant on Great Horton Road. The welterweight champ was welcomed by fans and local businessmen as he paid a special visit to the city with his friends and family. The global star enjoyed a meal inside the newly expanded restaurant and spoke about his latest project, the Amir Khan Foundation, which was set up earlier this year. Mr Lahore’s premises have doubled in size due to the expansion, which was partly funded by a £200,000 grant from Bradford Council’s Regional Growth Fund, and is set to benefit the local community. Not only has the capacity doubled in size, but so too has the number of jobs, meaning the employment rate has also improved.

They must also record a broader range of outcomes, such as penalty notices and cautions, so it can be understood how successful each stop and search is. • Allow members of the public to apply to accompany officers on patrol to help improve the community’s understanding of the police. • Introduce a stop and search complaints “community trigger” so forces must explain to the public how powers are used if they receive a large volume of complaints. • The Home Secretary said forces must make clear that they will respect law established in the recent Roberts case by only using the Section 60 “no suspicion” stop and search power when it is “necessary to prevent incidents involving serious violence” rather than just “expedient” to do so. For those participating in the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme, use of Section 60 must also be authorised by a chief officer who must reasonably believe that violence “will” take place rather than “may” take place, as it stands now. Forces must also limit its application to 15 hours and communicate with communities before and after, so residents can be kept informed of the purpose and success of the operation.

Stop & search reform Home Secretary announces new measures in the way police use their powers Home Secretary Theresa May this week announced a major package of measures to reform the way the police use stop and search powers. While stop and search is undoubtedly an important police power, when it is misused it can be counter-productive. It can be an enormous waste of police time and, when innocent people are stopped and searched for no good reason, it is hugely damaging to the relationship between the police and the public. The Home Secretary today announced that she intends to revise the Police and Criminal Evidence Act Code of Practice A to make clear what constitutes “reasonable grounds for suspicion” – the legal basis upon which officers carry out the vast majority of stops. The revised code will emphasise that where officers are not using their powers properly they will be subject to formal performance or disciplinary proceedings. The Home Secretary has written to all Chief Constables and Police and Crime Commissioners, telling them to adhere to the code’s requirement that they should make arrangements for public

16 men and one woman have been arrested in raids as part of an operation to crackdown on drug dealing in Oldham. They were arrested when Manchester Police raided 14 addresses just after 6am on Wednesday 30th April 2014. Officers from Oldham's Operation Caminada Organised Crime Unit launched the operation, codenamed Operation Alamos, as their response to community concerns that street drug dealing was a problem in the area. This operation forms part of Operation Challenger, which is the Force's strategy for tackling organised crime groups across Greater Manchester.

These arrests came after months of investigations by officers from the Oldham Organised Crime Unit into the distribution of heroin. In the raids this morning, 16 men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences, after officers executed warrants across Oldham and Burnley. More than 80 officers were involved in the raids and included officers from the Oldham Division and force tactical aid unit supported by Lancashire Police. Extra officers from Oldham's Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be patrolling the area from today and the next few days to provide a visible presence and reassurance to the community. A multi-agency plan is now in place for the area to ensure support for drug users and to prevent any further offending in the area. Superintendant Denise Worth of the Oldham Division, said: "Today shows that the desire to rid our communities of the blight of drugs is continuous and that we shall keep tackling the issue as many times as is necessary until the problem is dealt with.

She is in her sixties is diabetic and requires assistance. All my brothers and sisters meet together as a family every Sunday and sometimes Wednesdays to help out.” said Abdul “When I started earning I would contribute to the family. When I did not work, my family supported me, both emotionally and financially. I feel responsible for ensuring that my parents are looked after well.” High rates of unemployment have meant that people are venturing outside of their localities to find work. In some cases, having to move to completely new areas in the country, in the process redefining the traditional set up where parents had their siblings accessible for their needs. “Times have changed. There are still traditions, which play a role in certain homes. But some are leaving the tradition of sticking together,” highlights Abdul. Abdul is driven by a religious ethos to look after his parents in their old age where they are in need of care. He points out that

Police officers across London will wear video cameras when responding to emergency calls as part of a year-long pilot project launched on Thursday. A total of 500 cameras will routinely collect evidence from public order and domestic abuse incidents in 10 of London's 32 boroughs, as well as potentially contentious ‘stop and searches’, Scotland Yard said. The force has been testing bodyworn cameras for several years but was given new impetus following the police shooting of suspected gang member Mark Duggan in 2011, which sparked days of rioting in the capital and cities across England. An inquest jury in January found the killing was lawful but the coroner noted the ‘stark problem’ posed by contradictions between the notes from officers at the scene and mobile phone video evidence taken by witnesses.

A British minister has sought action against scientists in India and China who are allegedly producing dangerous new medicines called "legal highs" to be sold on UK streets. Norman Baker, a UK Home Office minister, said that scientists in India and China are creating new drugs on a ‘weekly basis’ and the UK government needs to find new ways to deal with them. “We're in a race against the chemists of new substances being produced almost on a weekly basis in places like China and India,” Baker told the BBC. “They then come in here and are inaccurately and unhelpfully called 'legal highs', some of them are actually illegal. “They are certainly not necessarily safe and the word legal implies that they are safe. And people are consuming them and last year I think it was 68 people who died, according to coroner’s reports, from the ingestion of these substances.”

Lawsuit claims FBI use ‘No-fly- list’ to coerce Muslims into informing A recently filed case on behalf of four American Muslims in a US district of New York, has accused the US attorney general, Eric Holder, the FBI director, James Comey, the homeland security secretary, Jeh Johnson, and two dozen FBI agents of creating an atmosphere where innocent Muslims are forbidden from flying. The motive apparently was so that the FBI can use this as leverage to get them to snitch on their communities. In recent years Muslim community leaders in the US have stated that they feel law enforcement at times considers them a target. Material demonising Muslims and Islam has been present in FBI counter-terrorism training, which the bureau has conceded was inappropriate. The New York police department recently shut down a unit tasked with spying on Muslim businesses, mosques and community centres in New York and New Jersey. The lawsuit seeks not only the plaintiffs’ removal from the no-fly list but also the establishment of a

more robust legal mechanism to contest placement upon it. “This policy and set of practices by the FBI is part of a much broader set of policies that reflect overpolicing in Muslim-American communities,” said Diala Shamas, one of the lawyers for the four plaintiffs.

The no-fly list is among the most opaque post-9/11 measures. It is maintained by the FBI and implemented at airports by the Department of Homeland Security. Few know they’ve been placed on it, and those who do face a complicated redress process to

have themselves removed. The new lawsuit alleges that the opacity contributes to watchlist abuse. According to the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Centre, which maintains the list, there were approximately 16,000 people, fewer than 500 of them Americans, on the no-fly list as of September 2011. A larger pool of data that feeds the no-fly list and other government watchlists, known as the Terrorist Screening Database, contemporaneously contained records of 420,000 people. Famously it included Nelson Mandela until 2008. The government’s policy is to not to confirm or deny someone’s placement upon a watchlist. Several earlier lawsuits have attempted to get people off the nofly list. In February Rahinah Ibrahim became the first since 9/11 to win such a case, after demonstrating that the FBI adder her name by mistake. She had been unable to fly since 2004.

Bradford resident warns others ‘don’t be as foolish as he was’

What started off as a routine trip to an autocentre and bike shop, soon turned into a scam for one Bradford man. 50-year-old bus driver Abdul Hamid’s story is one which happened over the space of just two expensive days. He found himself losing £3,000, and gaining possession of two mysterious stones and involved three unknown characters who he has not seen since the day of the trade. Now he is warning others not to make the same mistakes he did, in the hope of saving people thousands of pounds. “Looking back I do feel embarrassed that it happened to me but now I want to let others know that this is happening in Bradford,” Mr Hamid said. “I let greed get the better of me for that one moment and now I have lost my money and just have these two rocks which I don’t even know the real worth of.” On Monday 14th April, Mr Hamid met the first man, who called himself

‘Mousa’, at Halfords in the city centre. The Bradford resident was approached by Mousa who enquired about the cost of his car as his ‘friend’ was in need of a new motor so the pair went to see him. Upon arrival, the second man, who called himself ‘Mr Mumbai’, got in the car with ten stones which seemed to have gems inside them. After inspecting them, Mousa, driven by Mr Hamid, took them to be seen by his friend and jeweller, a man who called himself ‘Mr Williams’. Mr Williams declared the rocks to have a value of approximately £385 per gram, which worked out as £48,000 when cleaned and so struck a deal with Mousa to buy two stones. When Mousa and Mr Hamid returned to see Mr Mumbai to purchase the two stones, Mousa was told he would have to pay a deposit in ‘pound sterling’, as Mr Mumbai was from another country and had no English currency, if he was to have them for a final price of £29,000. Following this

Two London Times journalists covering the Syrian civil war were kidnapped by a ‘rebel gang’ and one of them was shot before members of an anti-extremist rebel group intervened and secured their release, the Times reported on Thursday. Reporter Anthony Loyd was shot twice in the leg while being held captive and photographer Jack Hill suffered a severe beating after trying to escape, it said. The two, who had spent several days covering the restive city of Aleppo for the Times, were released on Wednesday after local commanders of the group Islamic Front intervened. They later crossed into Turkey, the paper said. Loyd and Hill were kidnapped earlier in the day along with a local guide while heading from the northern Syrian town of Tall Rifat to Turkey after a ‘rebel gang’ intercepted the vehicle in which they were travelling, the newspaper reported.

Indians are feasting on some of the world's most succulent mangoes after the European Union banned imports of the fruit from India this month, producing a glut and rockbottom prices for local consumers. Starting May 1, the EU banned imports of Indian mangoes including the Alphonso, considered the king of all the mango varieties grown in South Asia, because a large number of shipments were contaminated with fruit flies. The pests are considered a threat to

crops grown locally in Europe. "Those jittery Europeans have taken fright at some fruit flies in our mango exports, flies which they fear will wreak havoc on their tomatoes and cucumbers," the Times of India wrote in a gleeful editorial. "Imagine sacrificing the king of fruits for salad!" For years, the Alphonso mangoes had been out of the reach of most Indians as the best of the fruit was shipped to the supermarkets of Europe and other parts of the world where it commanded a premium price. In Mumbai, the capital of the main Alphonso growing region, the

fruit is now selling for 150-550 rupees ($2.50-$9) a kilogram, and sellers say they expect the prices to fall even further. Mangoes start arriving in Indian markets in April, providing a juicy, delicious respite from summer temperatures and humidity as they start climbing to oppressive levels. A Thai court ordered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down on Wednesday after finding her guilty of abuse of power, prolonging a political crisis that has led to violent protests and brought the economy close to recession. The decision is bound to anger supporters of Yingluck, but the court did allow ministers not implicated in the case against her to stay in office, a decision that could take some of the sting out of any backlash on the streets. Dubai prosecutors have charged six Iranians with kidnapping a BritishIranian businessman who went missing in the emirate last year, the government said on Thursday. Authorities said in January they had detained three Iranians suspected of being part of a group that had kidnapped Abbas Yazdi, a businessman who owns a general trading company in the Gulf Arab emirate and who disappeared last June. Yazdi's wife, Atena, has told media in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a federal state comprising seven emirates, including Dubai, which she feared he might have been kidnapped by Iranian intelligence officers. Iran has denied any role in Yazdi's disappearance. The suspects confessed they had attacked and drugged Yazdi and were able to smuggle him out of the country through a sea port, the government said in a statement. They felt that their house, bought in 2011 in Santa Clara's Old Quad neighbourhood, could do with colours and so submitted plans for remodelling the house, which were approved by the city council in 2013. However, the multi-coloured pastel shades have upset neighbours who don't think that the transformation is in-keeping with other houses in the area. refrigerator on the street in front of his house and invited neighbours to donate their extra food, so that hungry people would be spared the "shame" of begging and could come and eat. The fridge is similar to those found in shops, lit up and with glass sliding doors, but protected from the elements in its own little house, complete with tiled roof.

Embezzlement charges Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gets three-year sentence

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gets a second conviction since he was pushed from power in 2011 and sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling public funds. The appealable verdict, which may be appealed, comes as Mubarak, 86, is being retried in a separate case linked to the death of protesters during the mass uprising that toppled him. An earlier life sentence in that case was overturned, angering many who saw it as evidence that little had come of the promises of social justice and accountability that followed his removal. Mubarak, â&#x20AC;&#x153;instead of following the rule of law and the constitution, allowed himself and his sons free rein with state funds to take

Pioneering Bradford to lead new device trials for treating bleeding peptic ulcers Bradford Teaching Hospitals is the first site in the UK to trial a powder called the ‘Hemospray’, which aims to stop ulcers from bleeding and help patients avoid open surgery and long hospital stays. Dr Sulleman Moreea, who is the UK’s chief investigator for the HALT trial (as it is known) said: “Gastrointestinal bleeding remains one of the most important emergencies in gastroenterology. Traditionally, the way doctors treat bleeding ulcers in the stomach and duodenum is to use an endscope – to inject adrenaline and to cauterise or stem the blood-flow through the use of medical clips. “This technique can be technically demanding and difficult. If the bleeding can’t be controlled, the patient will have to be transferred to the operating theatre for major surgery which is usually always followed by a long stay in hospital to recuperate. “Hemospray is a new powder that appears to act quickly when sprayed on to the ulcer to control the bleeding and can be easily

inserted via endoscope. Although there is a learning curve for the use of the Hemospray, ultimately this is an easier technique compared to the current methods which we use.” The HALT study is a multi-national, commercial study funded by US-based pharmaceutical company, Cook Medical, involving centres in Hong Kong, Canada, Holland and the United States. It aims to recruit 80 patients worldwide, of which 40 have been recruited so far. The Bradford team, which includes specialist research nurse, Karl Ward, have screened eight people and recruited three patients since the study began in February. The hospital hopes to recruit 10 patients in total over the next five months. Initial reports of Hemospray’s usefulness in stemming bleeding peptic ulcers in the USA have proved promising but were limited by the small number of patients, so larger studies such as HALT will confirm its true worth in the management of upper gastrointestinal

Dr Moreea added. “If the Hemospray proves effective in this current study then further research will be carried out to directly compare the powder against the current techniques of adrenaline, cauterization and clips. “If the Hemospray proves less successful than we think it will be, doctors will use the current endoscopic and surgical techniques to stem the bleeding.” Currently, the Foundation Trust sees between two to three patients every month

with peptic ulcers, while around three to four patients a year will end up in surgery if endoscopic options fail to stop their bleeding. “Bradford patients will benefit from this new treatment if it proves effective as their bleeding will be easier to control and hopefully fewer patients will need to go to surgery for peptic ulcers,” added Mr Ward. Nottingham University Hospitals will be the only other UK site to take part in the trial and the team there will be led by consultant gastroenterologist, Professor Krish Ragunath.

Bragging number plate gets owner nicked A man who shamelessly drove his £55,000 car bearing a bragging registration plate unwittingly led police to his multi-million pound car theft racket in Birmingham. The multi-million pound car theft gang was caught after taunting police with a 30-year-old Shanwaz Khan – the mastermind of the gang, brazenly drove his blue Audi RS4 with his ‘S20LUN’ personalised number plate, but his flashing around only succeeded in getting him noticed by police who decided to track his car and found it among a convoy of stolen Mercedes in March 2012. Detectives launched a six-month investigation into his dealings and found he was behind a ring that stole cars to order before shipping parts abroad. On October 15, 2012 officers raided his home and lock-ups across Birmingham and found an 'Aladdin's cave' of chopped up car parts stolen from across the city. A court heard in total police linked Khan to more than 80 vehicle thefts and violent carjackings during 2012 - valued at £1.1 million. Khan admitted conspiracy to commit burglary and handle stolen goods and at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday and was jailed for seven years. Along with his brother Wajid

Khan (24) cousin Seyed Khan (32) and fellow conspirators Ross and Matthew Dunham the gang stole vehicles from driveways and carjacked other victims. A court heard upwards of 3,000 parts stripped from the cars were sold on to unwitting internet buyers via an eBay account operated by the Khans. Wajid Khan and Seyed Khan, both from Birmingham, admitted conspiracy to handle stolen goods and were both sentenced to 30 months behind bars. Ross, 21, and Matthew Dunham, 24, from Coventry, West Mids, were jailed for five years and 39 months respectively. After the case Detective Constable Mo Azir, from West Midlands Police said: “We

meticulously pieced together their network of premises and, when officers raided one unit in Aston, we found an Aladdin’s cave of stolen cars and parts. “Many of these were high-value luxury cars that had been brutishly ’chopped’ up, whilst another premises in the city centre was used exclusively to store engines ripped from the stolen cars. “The scale of their criminal operation was vast and they showed a complete disregard to the trail of destruction and misery left behind to victims of these offences.” The gang were linked to 82 vehicle thefts during 2012 all but 17 in the West Midlands with Audis and BMWs their favoured vehicles. They included a petrol station

car-jacking at a Total garage when a man was dragged from behind the wheel of his £25,000 Ford Focus ST. And in the early hours of April 27th they stole two Mercedes CClass from a driveway in having grabbed keys during a break-in. However, the owner spotted her car being driven around Coventry on false plates the next day and later picked Matthew Dunham out as the driver during an ID procedure. He also rented space at City Self Storage, in Digbeth, Birmingham, to stash stolen engines before shipping many of them abroad. Det Con Azir added: “The premises were leased by the Khans using false names and documentation of the cars were stolen to order for engines which the Khans shipped out to the continent. “All five are subject of on-going Proceeds of Crime Act investigations and we’ll look to seize any assets obtained through criminal activities.”

Back in 2005, after months of underground oblivion, Tigerstyle resurfaced and introduced a fresh new talent to the UK Bhangra community in the form of Bikram Singh. Bikram, a New York Punjabi singer and songwriter, had a hit track titled ‘Kawan’, which featured vocal talents of Gunjan (she’s also famously known for her collaborations with Bally Sagoo). Self-Certification: A probable abuse of the term ‘Halal’

The amount of Muslims in the world is astronomical and as an outcome of these mammoth numbers, the Muslim community represents a huge potential market that many national and international companies and organisations are tapping into. Muslims today represent 4.8% of the UK population and in Europe the Muslim share of the population is expected to grow by approximately one third over the next two decades. With increased numbers of Muslims, wider demand for halal compliant produce is rising; recently we have seen the launch of the 100% halal ready meals spearheaded by Shazia Saleem – founder of Ieat Foods. The Ieat website (www.ieatfoods.com) guarantees consumers that their products have been halal certified by a reputable UK certification body. In direct contrast however, if one peruses our everyday supermarket aisles, we come across a variety of products – from ethnic foods such as samosas to frozen lamb burgers that can go straight onto the barbecue – many with the globally recognised Arabic ‘halal’ emblazoned across the packaging but with no mention of the certification body which has accredited said products as halal. Self-certification of halal products is rife in Britain; due to the vast Muslim consumer market there is a want and need for more halal products and as a direct result, more consumer choice. Consumers do not want to feel excluded when they do their weekly shop, they want to go to the supermarket and have as much as choice in the products they buy as their non-Muslim friends, colleagues and peers. Despite this, it remains imperative to understand where the products we are eating have actually come from. If a product has ‘halal’ written on it, can we fully trust it? If a company is marketing their products as halal, the meat may be from a halal source, but has the entire production process been halal approved? Is the said product free of all nonhalal additives and E-numbers? Is it free of non-halal oils and

fats? Are the emulsifiers that have been used 100% sourced from halal slaughtered animals? If yeast has been used in the finished product – was it autolysed or brewer’s yeast? If cheese has been used in a product, is animal rennet or pepsin used in the cheese production? When the processed foods are transported, are suitable transportation methods put in

place to stop halal products from being contaminated by non-halal items? These are just a few of the questions that need to be considered to ensure a product is 100% halal. All of the above need to be taken into account and looked at in depth – a task that is undertaken by halal certification bodies across the world.

The method by which the animal has been slaughtered is not the only factor that solely determines halal compliance and this is something that consumers need to understand. CEO of the UK certification body Halal Food Authority (HFA), Saqib Mohammed, tells me that: “merely having the word ‘halal’ in any transcript depicted on product packaging means next to nothing unless

said product has been independently certified by recognised halal certification body(ies) depicting their registered logo. “We at the HFA strongly discourage the use of selfcertification and will consumers to seek further information to unveil probable misrepresentation or abuse of the term ‘halal’”. Echoing the sentiments of the HFA above, the term ‘halal’ can be put onto a product but this does not mean that the entire production process of the product in question has been looked at from start to finish. The question “how are we supposed to know what is halal and what isn’t?” may arise by the time you have gotten to this stage in the article, and the truth of the matter is – if you don’t ask you won’t know. Consumers need to become proactive to ensure that they are not eating any products that would not be seen as permissible in accordance to Islamic law. When stocking up your trolleys on the weekly shop, before you put the halal goodies in, take a look at the back of the product to see if the logo of a reputable, trustworthy certification body has been put on the packaging, if not a logo – is there any mention of the halal certification body that certifies the company? If not, before purchasing the product, enquire about its halal compliance. With the rise in social networking, asking questions and making informed decisions has never been easier. The growing numbers of selfcertified products are purely down to the fact that there is a place in the global halal market for them to exist; if consumers seek something and the want is large enough then gaps will be filled. If more consumers question and contest self-certified halal products and refuse to purchase items that they cannot fully trust, the amount of selfcertified businesses who ‘assure’ Muslims that their products are halal will begin to dwindle – and as a result, the lucrative halal market will be left with dependable products that are categorically 100% halal. Seek the knowledge. Be informed. Share your findings.

n the High Court case of Ashworth and others v The Royal National Theatre the Claimants, a group of musicians, were unsuccessful in their application for an interim injunction to require the Defendant, The Royal National Theatre (“RNT”), to continue to engage them in the production of War Horse until the hearing of their claim for breach of contract.

The Claimants were engaged by the RNT in March 2009 to play their instruments in accompaniment with recorded music in the RNT’s production of War Horse. However productions of War Horse in other parts of the world have relied wholly on recorded music and as such it was decided by the CoDirector and the Composer of War Horse that it was better for accuracy and impact to rely on recorded music for the play. Initially the involvement of the Claimants in the production was reduced to them playing their instruments during one short scene only with the remainder of the music in the play being recorded. On 4 March 2014 the RNT sent the Claimants letters of termination stating their contracts would expire on 15 March 2014 on the grounds of redundancy (i.e. the music in the play would now be recorded as opposed to live).

In response the Claimants issued a claim against the RNT claiming breach of contract. At the same time the Claimants filed an application for an interim injunction (or specific performance) requesting that the RNT be required to employ them in the production again until the trial of their claim. The court dismissed the Claimants’ application for an interim injunction. The court found that there had been a breakdown in ‘trust and confidence’ between the Claimants and the RNT and an injunction reinstating the Claimants into the production was likely to be unworkable. The court also held that the case was not exceptional, and that damages would be an adequate remedy for the Claimants. Further, the court was not persuaded that specific performance or a mandatory injunction would be granted at the trial of the Claimants’ claim for breach of contract. The court also considered that the decision of the Co-Director and Composer to rely only on recorded music was a decision made in accordance with their ‘right of artistic freedom’. This right derives from Section 12 of the Human Rights Act 1998, which provides that when considering whether to grant relief which may affect the right of freedom of expression as contained in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (“ECHR”), the court must have particular regard to the importance of that right. The Judge held that the RNT’s right to freedom of expression as to how it produced the play would be interfered with should the Claimants be reintroduced into the play. Even though the Claimants were unsuccessful in their application for an interim injunction the Judge did indicate that their prospects of success at the trial of the breach of contract claim were strong. The case is an example of the stringent test Claimants must pass in interim relief applications. Furthermore, human rights legislation was held to be applicable in this case and this may set a precedent for future cases where ECHR provisions are used in a similar context. The Musicians’ Union, which backed the five instrumentalists in the case, said the Claimants are considering whether to appeal. Land Rover unveils the new Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase in Beijing

Together with the Range Rover Sport Hybrid, it will be the first diesel hybrid model from any manufacturer to be offered in China. China is recognised by Land Rover as a potentially strong market for its new premium hybrids, whilst the long wheelbase design is identified as best suiting Chinese customers’ preferences for luxury and spaciousness. Global order books will open in May and first deliveries to customers in China are expected from the end of the year. In 2013. A fleet of Range Rover Hybrids proved their durability and all-terrain capability on a gruelling 16,000km route from the Land Rover factory in Solihull, across central Asia to the Mumbai headquarters of Tata, Land Rover’s parent company. After the journey, the vehicles were stripped down and scrutinised by Land Rover engineers to improve understanding of how the designs and technologies can be finetuned. The Range Rover Hybrid powertrain combines Land Rover’s 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor, integrated with an eightspeed ZF automatic transmission. The system allows the driver to select from three different drive modes to maximise performance or efficiency, and is capable of delivering 26 per cent lower CO2 emissions (169g/km) and 6.4 l/100 km (44.1mpg). Being the latest models to join to the McLaren Automotive range, the cars are being flaunted throughout China and includes an array of bespoke MSO features, including a newly designed carbon fibre rear diffuser and MSObranded carbon fibre side blades. Loyal fans of “The Ultimate Driving Machine” who have found that they’re actually not all that thrilled with the direction BMW has taken in recent years, have a chance to change their minds at last. Those who have felt slighted, though, can now take heart with the new BMW 2 Series which in effect is the name for the 1 Series Coupe. It's a rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe that's supposed to focus on the sporty side of driving more than the 1 Series hatchback it's based on. BMW is launching the 2 Series with three engines: the diesel 220d (£25,865) and a two petrol version - the 220i priced at around £25,000 and the range-topping M235i which will set you back just over £34,000. Two more models, the 218d and the

225d, will join the line-up later this year; the 218d will become the new entry model in the range, starting at £24,265. The higher spec version of the 2 Series, the M235i is just the right size for a little sports car, and it feels responsive, taut and eager, the way a BMW should. The M235i is a killer powertrain consisting of a 320-hp turbocharged straight-six-cylinder engine mated to either an eight-speed automatic, or a sixspeed manual. Although this is not an all-out M-car from BMW’s in-house performance tuning stations, the M235i brings a sportoriented suspension, brakes, and super sport tyres. Though it feels civilised at low speeds, push the motor hard and it sounds terrific, with a distinctive six-cylinder howl that just gets louder as you rev the engine

beyond 4000rpm. The M235i is seriously quick, too, with 0-62mph taking just 5.0 seconds (4.8 if you opt for the excellent automatic 'box). The beautifully finished cabin features the “M” badge here and there, while the sculpted seats provide immense support. Though the space up front is fine, the rear seats are very tight. Smaller in size than the 3 Series, the M235i brings all the latest BMW infotainment system features, and quirks, managed by the iDrive controller and viewed on a clear but small 6.5-inch colour screen. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, climate control, xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and a USB socket. You also get a DAB radio, although have to pay extra if you want a sat-nav.

The new Toyota Yaris

Hot on the heels of its newly launched Aygo city car, Toyota has released the first details of its refreshed Yaris supermini. Scheduled to hit the showrooms this summer, the restyled car boasts an improved interior and better vehicle dynamics that its maker believes will position the car as one of the strongest contenders in the fiercely competitive supermini market. The Yaris follows the example of new Aygo, adopting a dramatic look that integrates a distinctive cross shape, centred on the front emblem, which separates the new-look upper and lower grilles. At the rear there are restyled light clusters fitted with LEDs. According to Toyota, customer feedback has inspired improvements in three principal areas: a greater

feeling of roominess and dynamic appeal; higher levels of perceived quality; and more choice in terms of colours and equipment. To back up its claims, under the skin Toyota has revised the car’s suspension to improve both comfort and handling. The engine l i n e - u p remains unchanged, with 1.0 and 1.33litre petrol and 1.4 D4D diesel engines alongside the car’s flagship hybrid system.

Last year he was just another face in the crowd but now, just 12 months later, Waheed Aesthetic will be one of the most honoured fitness models at this year’s Body Power Expo. Waheed has been training tirelessly for the past 12 months to get into the shape of his life and appear at Europe’s largest consumer fitness exhibition this weekend in Birmingham. The fitness enthusiast will appear on stage as one of the selected fitness models on Saturday, alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. As an attendee at last year’s show, the personal trainer says he was determined to experience what it

was like to be on stage, and not just an onlooker. “It has been a lot of hard work to get where I am now but I just cannot wait until Saturday,” he said. “I have always taken care of my physique and tried to look as good as I can but these last few months I have really pushed myself; I just wanted to see how good I really could be. “I’m down to just eight per cent fat now, I’m training three times a day, and cut out the carbs to get to where I am.” Waheed, who will also be launching his own line of clothing in the near future, qualified from Birmingham University in 2012 with a degree in Sport Science. From that point he has worked as a personal trainer and recently took up fitness modelling. As a Pakistani Muslim

bodybuilder, he says he has gathered quite a following and considers it an ‘honour’ to be looked up to by so many people in the South Asian community. “In this line of work there aren’t that many Asians so I’ve already got quite a few fans which I am extremely grateful for,” he said. “I enjoy representing the Asian community on the big stage and am always pushing myself to be better than before.” He added: “In regards to an idol, I don’t really have one. I truly believe that we can always be that little bit better so the motivation I have is simply from my ambition to be the best that I can be.” Waheed Aesthetic will be performing on stage on Saturday 17th May at the NEC Arena Birmingham on the second day of the Body Power Expo.

Former Iran and Qatar women’s football coach, Helena Costa, made history earlier this week after it was announced that she would become the first female manager of a men’s professional side in Europe’s top five footballing nations. French second division side, Clermont Foot, confirmed that the 36-year-old Portuguese coach will take over the reins from next season, via a club statement. “Clermont Foot 63 has chosen Helena Costa to be our new coach,” it read. “Helena Costa came through the ranks at Benfica before taking charge of the women's teams at Odivelas, then the national teams of Qatar and Iran, in addition to working as a scout for Celtic. “This appointment will allow Clermont Foot 63 to begin a new era, relying on a group of 17 players currently under contract, which will be added to by young players from the club.” Costa, who initially started her footballing career playing for Benfica’s Under 9s team, eventually went into coaching the side’s prolific Under 17 set up who she led to two world youth titles. Clermont Foot are currently 14th in Ligue 2 with two matches to go and have never played in the top tier of French football throughout their 24 year history. Costa will be tasked with leading the club into new territory and the former Celtic scout has been backed by one of her previous clubs to be a big success in France. “We would like to congratulate Helena sincerely on taking up this new role,” said a spokesman for the Scottish champions. “She did an excellent job for us and we know she will give her new position the same high level of commitment and dedication which she gave to Celtic.” The appointment was also hailed by France's Women's Minister, Najat Belkacem, who wrote on her Twitter: “Bravo Clermont Foot for understanding that giving a place to women is the future of professional football.”

Two judges scored the contest 119-104 while the third had it 117-106, reflecting the dominance of the Brit who had not been in the ring for more than a year since his victory over Julio Diaz. The win also saw Khan pick up the WBC Silver and WBA International titles at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas, on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s win over Marcos Maidana. Khan started the fight in a confident manner, keeping his opponent at bay with his reach advantage, before landing a big right hand in the second round that rocked Collazo. Two rounds later and the New Yorker was on the canvas after missing with a big swing, as Khan continued to look the more likely victor. Both men were penalised a point in the eighth round, with Collazo hitting a low punch and Khan punished for holding as the Brit began to show a bit of wear for the first time. Yet any doubts that began to run through the crowds’ minds were soon put to rest in the tenth as Collazo was twice knocked down. Firstly, a succession of body punches appeared to hurt the 33-year-old before a quick one-two stunned him once more. Collazo barely made it to the final bell, resorting to a clear low blow in the final round to get away from the welterweight debutant, who was raised aloft in celebrations at the end of the twelfth. When Khan’s hand was raised the crowd knew he was back, and now the question is who does he face next? Obviously the contest many want to see is the Mayweather bout yet Khan appears to have other options before such a fight could take place. “I had to be disciplined tonight,” Khan said. “Collazo's a great fighter. This was my first fight in 13 months. I'm still improving and will sit down with my team and look at the tape. “I definitely want to fight again this year, either November or December. I don't want another year off. “I like fighting at home but it depends what event it is, what show it is. If it was another show like this, as big as this, I'd be happy.” Speaking about the possibility of a fight with Mayweather, who extended his unbeaten record to 46-0 with victory over Marcos Maidana in the headlining event, Khan said he would be confident about ending the streak. “Mayweather put on a great performance but you look at the way I fought Maidana and the way he fought Maidana,” he said. “I put him down with a great body shot. Maidana is slower than me and he was still catching Mayweather. “Floyd is getting older and people want to see him get beat. It would be a boxing match, skills v skills, and the youth will take him, that's for sure. He changes his style for each fight but if he was just standing there I would definitely be able to get my shots off.”

Double point’s finish

It certainly wasn’t their best performance of the season yet Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez continued to defy all doubters as they registered yet another double point’s finish at the Barcelona Grand Prix. Perez, who came home in ninth position, was just one spot ahead of his teammate, of whom he has already built up a strong working relationship with. Both drivers came into the race knowing it would be one of the trickiest of the current campaign, with neither managing to break into the top ten in qualifying. This left all the work to be done on the day of the race, and much like they have been doing so far this year, both racers took the challenge head on. The Mexican Perez came from 12th place to finish ninth and despite landing in the points, feels he could have achieved even more had they of adopted a more aggressive

strategy. He said: “It was quite a hard afternoon, so to come away with two points is not too bad. I had pretty strong pace in the race and my tyre degradation was okay so I think we probably could have been a bit more aggressive with the strategy. “Maybe if we had stopped earlier I could have jumped ahead of some more cars because my pace was good, but it was just so difficult to overtake. “We knew this track would be a tough test for us, so this result is more or less what we

expected here. Maybe seventh or eighth was achievable today, but we should feel quite happy to keep up our run of points.” Hulkenberg also clawed back one position on the grid, having started the race in 10th, to continue his own impressive record of scoring points on every track this year. “It was a case of damage limitation today,” he explained. “We knew from the early practice sessions that this wasn't going to be our

strongest track so to get two cars in the points is a positive result. “We will use all the data we got over the weekend to improve for the next few races where we hope to be a bit more competitive.” Meanwhile, Mercedes continue to dominate this year’s calendar with yet another Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg onetwo finish in Spain. #WEAREALLMONKEYS When Barcelona’s fullback, Dani Alves, had a banana hurled at him during a La Liga match at Villarreal, he did what very few others would ever contemplate doing…he ate it. From that one action, a whole new anti-racism campaign was launched, unbeknownst to the Brazilian international, as social media showed its growing power once again in helping to tackle society’s unwanted problems. Just moments after the final whistle was blown, Alves’ teammate and fellow countryman, Neymar, posted a picture of himself eating a banana on Twitter, asking others to join him with the hashtag #weareallmonkeys. From that moment, hundreds of celebrities, sport stars and political figures have joined in the campaign and despite its critics, #weareallmonkeys has swept across social media. The campaign was initially thought up by Barcelona’s forward, Neymar, after he was victim of racist verbal abuse at a league match with Espanyol. In an attempt to tackle one of Spanish football’s taboo subjects, the 22-year-old, along with Brazilian advertising agency, Loducca, planned for the hashtag to tackle the issue head on. “Neymar didn't want to be quiet, he wanted to use his own powerful voice to create something to talk about racism,” Guga Ketzer, partner at Brazilian agency Loducca, told the BBC. “We created this idea with the hashtag ‘we are all monkeys’ and the idea was to use it and take a picture of him eating a banana. “It was the best way to empower and start this conversation in Brazil. “It is to prove to the racists that we are all together whether we are black, white, yellow, it doesn't matter. We are all monkeys. Our idea was to make the racist powerless. It is one of the biggest racist conversations in years in Brazil and even in the world.” Alves, who spoke to reporters after the incident last month, said racism was a very real problem in the country. “We have suffered this in Spain for some time,” he said. “You have to take it with a dose of humour. We aren’t going to change things easily. If you don’t give it importance, they don’t achieve their objective.”
