From a flash mob on the streets of Halifax to performing at the Royal Albert Hall, Calderdale’s schoolchildren have certainly found their voice this year and are ready to take on one of the most prestigious school events in the calendar. Pupils from ten primary schools across Halifax will head to London in November as they prepare to perform at the annual Schools Prom event at the Royal Albert Hall.
Almost 700 children from Parkinson Lane Community Primary School are spearheading the project alongside their music teachers, turn musical conductors for the ‘Calderdale Massed Ensemble’ team – Shahbaz Hussain and Bobby R.S. The local representatives will perform on one of the nation’s most famous stages as part of the ‘Metamorphosis’ themed concert in the first of three evenings organised by national youth music organisation Music for Youth. A song made famous by the Qawwali legend, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, entitled ‘Tumhein Dillagi’
will be performed by the schools, bringing a whole new genre of music to the Schools Prom. Musical conductor, Bobby, said he was excited when he first heard the school’s bid had been accepted and was now ready to travel to the capital next month. “The night before the announcement was made I was a little bit nervous but remained confident that we were good enough to perform at the Proms,” he said. “Over the past few months, we have been looking at community cohesion work, studying Razia Sultan and emperors and

empresses. “The children performed a one hour play which also looked at the differences between good and bad, justice and injustice, through song and theatre. “It is this idea that will be taken to the Schools Prom and we are all now very excited to take this new type of music, and performance, to the prestigious event.” All children will wear costumes during the production whilst an interpretive dance is set to accompany the 650-strong choir. Rizwana Ahmed, deputy headteacher at Parkinson Lane, acknowledged the hard work undertaken by pupils and staff. “The staff of the school have really excelled themselves, the children rose to the occasion and performed the play and song in a manner that made them stand out from the rest,” she said. “Having seen the children performing I know the audience of the Royal Albert Hall will not be disappointed.” Giving a further insight as to what the performance will entail, Mrs Akhtar Hussain added: “At intervals the chants are broken by individual performers that make your insides glow with pride.” An audience at the
Victoria Theatre enjoyed a sneak preview of the performance in July, which was very well received whilst closer to home, a flashmob overtook the streets of Halifax with hundreds of youngsters showcasing their singing talents. The first evening of the Schools Proms will take place on Monday 10th November with 11 schools from Calderdale taking part in the event. The schools involved in the project are: All Saints CE (VA) J & I School, Holy Trinity P.S CE, Luddenden CE School, Mount Pellon Primary Academy,
Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, St Augustine’s CE, St Mary’s Catholic PS, Warley Road PS, Halifax High, The Crossley Heath School and The North Halifax Grammar School.

Safer Communities Fund passes Half-Million milestone Bin collections stopping
Collections of brown bins will stop temporarily from 29th November across Leeds, and resume on 2nd March 2015. The regular collections of garden waste are suspended every year as demand for the service is low with experience showing that with fewer jobs to do in the garden over the winter months, brown bins aren’t used as much, if at all. For resident’s wanting to dispose of garden waste, they can still take advantageof one of the city’s eight recycling centres. Councillor Mark Dobson, executive board member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said: “We just want to give residents a quick reminder that the brown bin service will be suspended soon. There’s still time to do any last minute jobs about the garden before the collections stop. After that, garden waste can still be recycled at our recycling centres.”
Leeds bonfire spectacular
Six public bonfires are once again set to light up the night sky in Leeds on 5th November so now is the time to plan your night’s festivities. In what is always a fantastic occasion in the city’s calendar, bonfires will be held at Roundhay Park, East End Park, Rothwell’s Springhead Park, Woodhouse Moor, Middleton Park and Bramley Park. Home to the biggest bonfire in Leeds is Roundhay Park, and an estimated crowd of 70,000 can once again be guaranteed a bonfire and firework display not to be missed. The bonfire on Soldiers Field will be lit at 7.30pm and followed by a fantastic firework display which will commence at 8pm. The five other bonfires will be lit at 7pm, with fireworks at 7.30pm.
Young people in care rewarded
Kirklees Council held a special celebration event for young people who are in care, or have been in care. The Achieve Awards ceremony saw 116 young people, including many care leavers, nominated for their achievements. The young people’s achievements included graduating from university, completing apprenticeships, climbing mountains, being a good mum and, in one case, saving someone’s life when they were having a seizure. The event was part of National Care Leavers Week, which supports young people who have been in care and highlights their needs. Cllr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “Children and young people who have been in care have often had a particularly difficult start in life. “We are keen to celebrate their achievements with them and share the positive ways that, with the support of those who look after them, they have changed their lives.”

Organisations across West Yorkshire continue to benefit from a police community project which has so far resulted in dozens of groups receiving more than £500,000 in grant money. The West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Communities Fund is built up throughout the year by money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). These funds are then put into one collective ‘pot’ which is distributed out across the county to aid with local community safety initiatives. A total of £567,000 has so far been awarded since the first donations were made and last week, a further 35 groups and projects were successful in their bids. £154,984.03 was handed over at the third event at Thornhill Academy, Dewsbury, to support various initiatives. One UK registered charity which received a substantial sum was Leeds-based Karma Nirvana which supports victims and survivors of Forced Marriage and Honour Based Abuse. Project Manager at the charity, Anup Manota, explained how the

Loving grandmother keeps children smiling for 25 years AWARDED: Mumtaz Begum, and her daughter Nasreen Akhtar, attended the FosterTalk Foster Care awards last week where Mumtaz was recognised for her commitment to caring for children
Fantastic Foster carer By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A caring grandmother from Keighley has been commended for her ‘amazing work’ with young people across Yorkshire after receiving a prestigious foster care award last week. Mumtaz Begum has been fostering children on a long and short term basis for the past 25 years, helping more than 30 children from one-day-old to 18 years of age. The mother-of-six, and grandmother-of-12, travelled to London to attend the FosterTalk Foster Carer awards ceremony on Wednesday 21st October, after being nominated for an achievement award by her daughter, Nasreen Akhtar. Explaining why she wanted to see her mother receive ‘the praise she so rightly deserves’, Nasreen explained: “Since she first came to the UK, my Mum has just loved working with kids. “She might be over 60 now but she is still going strong and is a fantastic role model, not only for the foster children but also her
own children as well. “All my brothers and sisters, we are all grown up now and have our education and careers. None of this would have been possible without our mum who is a massive inspiration to all the children she has helped in her life.”
in her way because she gives much more important things, such as love and care, to every single child. “She has witnessed children turn their lives around, and the difference in some of these kids when they arrive and leave the home, are just amazing.”
“She has witnessed children turn their lives around, and the difference in some of these kids when they arrive and leave the home, are just amazing.” Despite not speaking English as a first language, Mumtaz continues to foster children with Bradford Council and keeps in contact with many of those who pass through the family home. Nasreen continued: “The language barrier has never stopped her from giving the utmost care to all the children, whether it has been with some extra help from the family or interpreters. “Communication does not get
Cllr Ralph Berry, the Council's portfolio holder for children's services, added that the award was a ‘great recognition’ for Mumtaz which highlighted the dedication she has towards foster care. FosterTalk is an independent, not-for-profit organisation focused on, and dedicated to supporting, Foster Carers, successfully delivering high quality support services across the UK for the past 10 years.

A partially sighted teenager from Bradford has received a national award recognising his determination and effort in overcoming visual impairment to become an inspiration to others. 16-year-old Usman Zahid, from West Bowling in Bradford, was one of four youngsters presented with the Actionnaires Member of the Year award from a national charity - Action for Blind People (Action). A surprise ceremony for Usman took place at the English Institute for Sport, in Sheffield with British Paralympian Lee Brunton. Usman, who has the eye condition Nystagmus, has been a member of Bradford Actionnaires since it first began in 2008, always leading by example, getting involved in the activities and events on a regular basis. He is now also a volunteer, assisting and guiding other blind and partially sighted youngsters during activities and visits. Usman said: “Having a disability especially visual impairment has always been hard and I was always last to be picked in class at school. “I never thought I would win an

award and could help other people in sports. It's a dream come true for me. I hope I can encourage lots of other children with sight loss to put their disability aside and show others that they are no less than the rest.” The judges recognised Usman over hundreds of other blind and partially sighted youngsters who attend Action’s Actionnaires clubs - which help to develop fitness and artistic skills of visually impaired children, encouraging self-confidence and social interaction. Zahid, Usman’s dad, said: “This is a great moment for our family to see Usman being nominated and win this award.
“Our aim has always been to see our son lead an active and as normal life as possible. “Usman has been very active from a young age, always wanting to help others to do things that he found difficult but this has never stopped him try and achieve new things.” Craig Brown, activity coordinator at Action for Blind People, said: “Usman is a great role model to all those in the club; his positivity and independence shows others that a visual impairment should never get in the way of achieving your goals. “Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity for Usman to develop and gain experience and confidence. He’s a credit to the club.” INSPIRING: Visually impaired Usman Zahid is a credit to Bradford, guiding others who are blind or partially sighted
Cameron ‘Jostled’
AWARENESS: The efficiency of David Cameron’s security team came into questions earlier this week after a civilian was able to run into him in Leeds
It was a case of ‘wrong place, wrong time’ for a jogger in Leeds earlier this week as he accidentally ran into the British Prime Minister whilst on his way to the gym. Dean Farley, 28, caused a major security alert when he brushed past David Cameron in the city centre on Tuesday, before he was subsequently arrested by police. He was quickly released by officers after it was made clear that he had no idea what he had actually done. A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed Mr Farley was ‘de-arrested’ within minutes of the incident. “The fact that he has been de-arrested almost immediately shows there is nothing of concern,” the spokeswoman said. “It was around 15 minutes before he was de-arrested. In that time full inquiries were made.” The news of a passer-by gaining such easy access to the Prime Minister has led to calls for an inquiry as to how the incident was able to occur in the first place. Mr Cameron suffered no injuries in the ‘jostle’. On his Facebook page, Mr Farley wrote of the incident: “So I’m all over the news as 'the protester that attacked David Cameron in leeds’ yeah if you call brushing into someone while running then getting assaulted by half a dozen coppers in suits attacking.”

Father acquitted of murder after six-month ordeal
TRIAL: John Butler was acquitted of the murder of his ex-partner, Pauline Butler, after stabbing her at her home in Rawdon, Leeds
A businessman, arrested in April 2014 following the death of his ex-partner, has been cleared of her murder after previously pleading guilty to manslaughter. John Butler, 62, received the unanimous verdict from the jury at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday 22nd October after a defence of ‘loss of control’ was raised by the defendant. Butler stabbed Pauline Butler at her home numerous times on 14th April 2014 after it is alleged that she threatened to stop her ex-partner from seeing their granddaughter. The court also heard that Pauline threatened Butler on two previous occasions with a knife.
violence is one which is very real in all our communities and recently we have seen a rise in reports to the police,” Mr Iftikhar said. “It is unfortunate to see children becoming embroiled in domestic cases but that is the sad reality of the situation which we currently have. “In the case of Mr Butler, this was truly a tragic case but everybody can draw some comfort from the fact that justice has prevailed with Mr Butler having been acquitted of the charge of murder. “The father, along with his family, had to endure the traumatic experience of not only the loss of a loved
“Mr Butler has been acquitted of the charge of murder after we successfully argued that he suffered loss of control, a defence that rarely succeeds.” Sentencing the defendant, the judge, Mr Justice Edis accepted that the jury had agreed Butler must have suffered from a ‘loss of control’ at the time of the attack and was thus acquitted of murder. Representing Butler was Mr Abdul Iftikhar of Kamrans Solicitors, who says ‘justice has prevailed’ as Butler was cleared of the murder charge. “The issue of domestic
one but also the legal proceedings. However, I believe the sentence passed upon Mr Butler on Thursday does justice to the circumstances of the case.” Butler, who ran the Yeadon-based Kettley’s Furniture Centre, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter before the start of the trial. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.
JUSTICE: Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, said the right decision had been made after Butler suffered a ‘loss of control’

Calderdale Council awarded the, which will ensure both the best quality and value for money. The Piece Hall transformation project is being funded by Calderdale Council and a £7million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with building contract awarded to GRAHAM Construction after a tendering process. conserved, creating a 21st century heritage visitor attraction, with a state-of-the-art interpretation and learning centre, a new east extension and a redesigned courtyard. Calderdale Council’s Leader, Cllr Stephen Baines, said: “This is a significant milestone for the Piece Hall transformation project and the new Central Library and Archive. Father murdered wife and daughters before killing himself
Tragic family death
Cover story continued
The bodies of 49-year-old Jitendra Lad, along with his wife, Duksha Lad, 44, and their daughters, Trisha, 19, and Nisha, 16, were all found at their home on Blackberry Way, Clayton, shortly after 8.30pm on Monday. It is believed that they may have been in the home for ‘some time’ before a concerned neighbour made the discovery and detectives began a murder investigation. It has now been confirmed that Mr Lad murdered his family before hanging himself with any motive still yet unclear. West Yorkshire Police have also confirmed that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths. Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson said it is a distressing time for friends and family but ensured the shocked neighbourhood that a full investigation was underway. He said: “I have spoken to the family members this evening (wednesday) and updated them on the results of the post mortem examinations. “They are continuing to come to terms with what took place at Blackberry Way, which has robbed a family of two generations, and specially trained officers are supporting SCENE: Tributes to the family have been left them at this very difficult time. outside their home on Blackberry Way, Clayton “Enquiries are continuing
Police appeal following robbery in Bradford
Police are appealing for information following a robbery in Bradford. xxxxxxx At about 8.20pm on Wednesday, 15th October, three men wearing face coverings and dark clothing entered a house in Low Lane and made demands of the female occupants for cash and jewellery. Two of the men then made an untidy search, taking a quantity of jewellery, cash and two mobile phones, while the other guarded the occupants. The men then left in a new shape, dark coloured VW Golf, which went towards Clayton. No-one was hurt in the incident. The suspects are believed to be Asian and from the Bradford area. Two of the men were carrying hammers and a metal bar was also seen. Detective Inspector Ryan Bragg, of Bradford District CID, said: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in Low Lane in the time leading up to, or shortly after this incident. "We would also ask anyone who saw a dark coloured, new shape VW Golf in the Clayton area to contact the police with any information they may have about this vehicle and who may have been in it." Anyone with information is asked to contact DC 461 Khan at Bradford District CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

into the circumstances leading to the incident and we will not be drawn on speculation while our investigation is ongoing. “I would reiterate that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths and neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance to local people.” Superintendent Damien Miller, who leads neighbourhood policing across the Bradford District, added: “Clayton is a close-knit community and I understand that local people will be understandably upset by what has taken place and I would like to reassure people there is no wider danger to members of the public. “Additional neighbourhood officers are in the area speaking to people and offering reassurance.” Flowers and tributes have been laid outside the family home whilst the investigation continues with the community ‘stunned’ at what has happened. Mr and Mrs Lad had been
married for 23 years and both worked for Bradford Council in the benefits and revenue department and administration. Youngest daughter, Nisha, was studying her A-Levels at Thornton Grammar School and Trisha was in the second year of a biochemistry degree at the University of Leeds. Chris Sampson, Nisha’s head teacher, released a statement on behalf of the school to pass on their condolences. He said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by these tragic deaths. Our thoughts are with the family’s relatives and friends. We will be helping the police with their inquiry in any way we can.” Meanwhile, a University of Leeds spokesperson added: “This is dreadful and shocking news and our thoughts are with Trisha's friends and loved ones. Staff are working with the university's counselling and chaplaincy services to help students who are affected by this tragedy and we will do all we can to support them.”

A talented graduate from the University of Leeds has started a musical education project to enrich the lives of disadvantaged children in India. Kerrie Smith, from Ashford, Kent, who graduated in 2013 with a First Class Ba(Hons) in Popular and World Musics, is spending nine months developing a music programme at a school in the southern city of Bangalore. On arrival, Kerrie discovered that music is not generally part of the Indian school curriculum, which means many children have no previous musical education. She now teaches drums, guitar and keyboard and provides basic music lessons to disadvantaged students of both primary and DRUMMERS: A pair of students try their hand at the drums, an instrument Kerrie has excelled in

secondary school age. “Music education is enormously important in terms of communication skills, personal and emotional development,” she said. “Throughout my touching experience here I have witnessed music operate as an artistic avenue for disadvantaged children to express creativity and advance their confidence. “Teaching children both to share and have faith in their ideas grants an immense sense of achievement and fulfilment.” The 22-year-old says her aim is
to write a full music curriculum in which she can hand on to a local volunteer to ensure the project continues after her return home. A fundraising appeal has already raised almost £3,000 towards the project, which will also buy more instruments for the music classes and help her develop a programme specifically aimed at children at the school with learning and physical disabilities. It is also hoped that partnerships with music schools back in the UK might provide a reliable source of musical volunteers to travel to India each year and teach on the programme. Dr Simon Warner, programme leader of the School of Music's BA in Popular and World Musics, at the University of Leeds, said the place of education fully supports their former student and plans to work further with Kerrie in the future. “We wish her every success in this admirable scheme. Kerrie was always a conscientious and quietly determined individual,” Dr Warner said. “She is a superior drummer with interests in popular music in the UK and well beyond – I cannot think of a better person to spread the gospel of music-making further afield. “As a result of Kerrie’s networking, there is even the possibility that there could be opportunities for students in our School to study abroad in the future on a Year in Industry.” The project is based at the notfor-profit Annasawmy School, which has 650 students from impoverished backgrounds.

Child Friendly Awards
A group of young people have begun planning the Child Friendly Leeds Awards 2015, a ceremony rewarding the young people, adults, places and organisations helping to make Leeds a fantastic city to grow up in. The awards ceremony, held at Leeds City Varieties on 29th January, will be attended by leaders from around the city, including the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leeds, and will celebrate everything child friendly in Leeds. The ten young people, age 12-18, have come together from a mixture of schools and colleges around the city and now have just three months to ensure the awards are a success. As part of the planning process each young person will take on a bespoke role within the group. Whether they’re taking centrestage to host the ceremony; designing the sound and lighting; or writing the script for the evening, the experience will mean working together to help make the event a memorable occasion. Million March
By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A Yorkshire convoy, full of hundreds of pro-Pakistan campaigners, headed to London last weekend to show their solidarity with the Kashmiri people. Estimates range from fivethousand to tens-of-thousands of people, from all across the UK, took part in the march from Trafalgar Square to 10 Downing Street on Sunday 26th October. Seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation in Kashmir, which has so far resulted in three wars between India and Pakistan, protestors were demanding a military siege to be lifted in the Indian occupied area of the region. Lead organiser for the travelling contingent from Yorkshire, Mr Chaudhary Malik, said he was happy to see so much support for the people of Kashmir on the day. “I was extremely happy to see the endless Kashmir support from Yorkshire residents in numbers,” he said. “Thanks to the large number of Kashmir and Pakistani supporters coming down on the day we were all able to help make the day a big success.” Former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, hosted the event and told the Asian Express previously that Kashmir needed its

‘own voice’ to help bring an end to years of violence. “They want free will and aspire to talk for themselves,” Mr Chaudhry added. One member of the congregation who marched through the capital, Sajid Mahmood, explained further
what the protest was trying to achieve. “There were thousands who gathered to demonstrate their support for a free Kashmiri state, free from oppression, free from injustice and free to live without the fear of losing their loved ones
in the ongoing struggle which has existed for more than 60 years,” he said. Pakistan People’s Party leader, Bilawal Bhutto was jeered when he made speeches and a small isolated incident of bottle throwing was seen by a handful of supporters.

Keep it down
Leeds’ anti-social behaviour team are visiting hundreds of addresses to stop large parties getting out of hand. The proactive approach has seen council and police officers patrolling streets providing advice and guidance to potential revellers so they can keep their neighbours on their good side. Events with DJs, live bands, professional sound equipment and bouncers in homes are on the increase. Combined with excessive drinking, the parties have the potential to cause disruption and increasing complaints to the police and council. Most recently, the team have been focusing their efforts in Headingley and Hyde Park, making over 120 visits in the last month in a bid to nip any potential disturbance in the bud and avoid repeat complaints.
STARS training
Top amateur athletes will get a big head start thanks to free training at the city’s best sports facilities. Leeds City Council has agreed to extend the Supporting Talented Athletes Recognition Scheme (STARS), which allows competitors to train for free at venues including The John Charles Centre for Sport and Holt Park Active. The scheme, the only one of its kind running in West Yorkshire, is a partnership between Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Sport and is designed to give the region’s most talented athletes the best possible preparation for performing on the world stage. Past STARS athletes have included record-breaking wheelchair athlete Hannah Cockroft and world champion triathletes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee.
Fake recycling competition
Leeds City Council is aware of scam which is currently running which involves residents of Leeds receiving a call supposedly from a member of Leeds City Council staff stating they have won £100 as part of recycling competition. The council wants to stress that this competition is a scam and is not something the council is endorsing in any way. If you are asked for your bank details on a call like this, hang up immediately and alert the council on 0113 222 4406.
Bradford remembers
Bradford is marking the centenary of the first year of the First World War with a look back to November 1914. Bradford Industrial Museum will be looking at a week at war to reflect the local and global experiences of early November 1914. The free event 'A Week at War' will be held on Saturday 1st November at 11am until 1.30pm in the Cafe Gallery, Bradford Industrial Museum. Harbinder Singh will be talking about 'Invisible Heroes' and the involvement of Indians fighting for British forces and how this continues to impact on their descendants today. This will be followed by 1914 'wartime' style refreshments and the chance to see a number of items from stored collections as well as the newly displayed commemorative Poppy Quilt made as part of the Bradford Remembers community project.

Suspects named in murder probe Seven year investigation continues into mysterious death By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Three men have been arrested and released on bail after the Crown Prosecution Service named suspects in the unsolved disappearance of a Bradford car dealer. Clive Andrew Jones and Paul Scandratt were arrested and released on bail on suspicion of the murder of Sajid Saddique, whilst Simon Carroll was arrested on suspicion of assisting offenders, and also released on bail until midNovember. Mr Saddique has not been seen since around 10am on Valentine’s Day 2007 when he went to meet an associate, now named as Clive Jones, in the Asda car park in Shipley. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Snow, from West Yorkshire Police, confirmed Mr Jones said he was the last person to see Mr Saddique and handed over £150,000 – a claim Det Chf Insp did not believe.
MISSING: Police have been investigating the suspected murder of Sajid Saddique and have named three people who have been arrested in relation to the case
Mr Jones was initially arrested following the report of a missing person yet due to a lack of evidence, was soon released from police custody. Despite a body never being found, following extensive ‘proof of life’ enquiries, Det Chf Insp said there is ‘no acknowledgement of Mr Saddique being alive’. He told the inquest: “We got information and evidence in statement form, some is heresay but, that said and looking at all the circumstances, would support my theory that Mr Saddique was sadly and tragically murdered. “Information was that he had left the car park of his own volition and then may have been overpowered and taken to another location where, if information is accurate, he was subsequently killed. The whereabouts of his body is unknown.” “Three men still remain on bail
‘Welcome home’ The new Inspector for Bradford South Area Neighbourhood Team says his new role feels like ‘coming home’. Inspector Kevin Pickles, who took on his new role earlier this week, not only grew up in the local area, but began his policing career there in 1993 when he joined West Yorkshire Police, working at the old Odsal Police Station. He replaces Inspector Andrew Addy, who is moving to headquarters to take up a role with the force's Criminal Justice department. Kevin, who is now 40, has moved around West Yorkshire during his career, serving in Batley,
Dewsbury, Wakefield and Pontefract and was most recently the Inspector lead for Integrated Offender Management in Bradford District. He has previously led the City Neighbourhood Policing Team in Bradford and has been an acting
at this time. There has been a complete file given to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to get advice if there is enough evidence.” M r Saddique’s PLEA: Mr wife, Asma, Saddique’s wife, s p o k e Asma, says she previously needs ‘closure’ more than seven to the Asian years after her Express husband went about how missing her life has not been the same since her husband w e n t missing and how she now hopes her ordeal is coming to an end. She said: “We need
closure and I hope this is it now. It has been an awful long time and a nightmare to live through. “Something terrible has happened and someone is responsible for doing that to him – that’s what I have believed from day one and it is what I have said over the years. “In my heart it feels like there is no hope because this person is gone.”
Chief Inspector for the district too, so it's fair to say he knows Bradford very well. “My aim is to continue on with the excellent work of my predecessors and work closely with our partners and communities to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area,” he said. “I'm really looking forward to getting started, and I know I have an excellent team around me who will do all they can to serve the communities of Bradford South.”
“My aim is to continue on with the excellent work of my predecessors and work closely with our partners and communities to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.”

‘No win-no fee’ for accident victims Legal aid for personal injury claims was abolished in 1995 and replaced by ‘No win - No fee’ agreements, otherwise known as Conditional Fee agreements. These agreements are a way of funding your own legal costs of making a claim and can give you peace of mind in knowing that, if you lose your case, you will not have to pay your own lawyer’s fees. The system was designed to improve access to justice with the Government saying at the time, ‘In future, the question of whether one gets one's case to court will no longer depend on whether one can afford it, but on whether one's case is a strong one.’ However, the No win-No fee system has received bad press at times, particularly when it comes to accident claims with some blaming it for fueling the mythical compensation culture.
Whilst accidents do happen where nobody is at fault, they are often caused by the negligence of someone else and this is why the civil justice system is here to help you. If you have been injured through someone else’s negligence why shouldn’t you receive compensation for your injuries and the effect they have on your life? Why shouldn’t you recover any expenses you have incurred and why shouldn’t you recover your loss of earnings if you are off work? Here at Pudsey Legal we know how important conditional fee agreements are to people injured in accidents through no fault of their own. We see victims at first hand and we know how important it is that they receive independent advice and representation when involved in the complicated minefield of the laws of negligence and personal injury claims. There are three simple
reasons why conditional fees agreements are important: • They allow individuals to stand “toe to toe” with the other party who is often represented by their insurance company or their lawyers. • They provide a method of allowing victims to have access to expert and experienced legal advice without taking major financial risk. • They allow us to help people claim fair compensation following accidents which can have a devastating effect on family life, income and financial stability.
A Leeds eatery was forced to close its doors last week after health officers found numerous pieces of evidence to suggest a rat presence in several areas of the establishment. Owners of the RFC Takeaway, on Cherry Row, Burmantofts, were told that there was some ‘serious concerns’ that needed addressing following a health inspection in June this year. Rat droppings were found in food handling areas, on surfaces and in equipment and despite assurances of improving matters, a visit by Leeds City Council earlier this month found the problems still existed. Council officials were therefore granted a hygiene emergency prohibition order by Leeds Magistrates’ Court last week, which ensured the takeaway would remain closed until the problems were rectified. The establishment had to prove that there was no longer any risk to the public’s health should trading resume from the site. Coun Mark Dobson, the council’s executive member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said: “While we don’t like closing businesses, clearly this business can’t continue to trade whilst there is such risk to public health. “Environmental health officers are our eyes and ears behind the scenes in kitchens across the city, ensuring businesses comply with food safety legislation and helping them to improve standards. “Customers of these businesses can access the results of the officers’ hard work through the food hygiene rating scheme. “Customers can also rest assured in the knowledge that where a business falls short of the required standards, then we will quickly take action.” The council regulates all of the city’s food businesses with trained environmental health officers tasked with carrying out regular inspections of eateries. As of 23rd October 2014, RFC Takeaway was reopened and allowed to continue serving food out of its premises after the identified issues were rectified by owners.

A University of Huddersfield researcher is helping to combat one of the most emotionally devastating consequences of chemotherapy, which sees patients lose their hair whilst treatment is undertaken. Omar Hussain, working closely with one of the world’s leading companies in the field, has analysed the science behind the process of hair loss, paving the way for further technological developments. The success of the project has seen Omar receive funding from Huddersfield-based Paxman Coolers, as they continue to develop scalp cooling systems to aid hair loss. Following a project carried out by the partnership, a report detailing the findings were published confirming that evidence exists to prove that cooling can markedly reduce the hair loss caused by some of the drugs most commonly used in chemotherapy. There is also evidence that the choice of temperature can be crucial and the way is paved for further research, which will now be conducted by Omar, to be based at Paxman and at the University of Huddersfield. For Richard Paxman, who is managing director of the company that manufactures and markets scalp cooling systems, the research collaboration has been a major success that will enable further improvements in treatment and technology. “When a patient comes to us and asks what the chances are of keeping their hair, at the moment we are very fair and say they are 50 per cent,” he said. “Now we want to take that up to 80 per cent and we believe that greater understanding of the scientific mechanisms will allow us to do that.” Omar – who has presented his research at several international conferences, in tandem with a Paxman team – described further what

As part of his research, Omar tested the response of more than 50 people – Paxman staff plus University staff and students – to wearing the device. “The first ten minutes are when everybody feels a slight discomfort. After that they are fine,” he said. In 2016, Paxman, with Omar closely involved, plans to launch a fourth generation scalp cooler.

Contemporary painting exhibition
Huddersfield Art Gallery is encouraging everyone to find out what is happening in British painting today - by attending their latest exhibition ‘Contemporary British Painting’. The exhibition opens on 1st November and runs until 14 March 2015, giving a glimpse into the dynamic and vibrant painting scene taking place in the UK – which sees many serious artists working out of garages, spare bedrooms and garden studios, using social media to connect with each other and their audience. Their paintings draw on contemporary subjects like our engagements with the Middle East and the impact of mass media. Entry to the exhibition is free and the gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.

Students lead the way
The exam achievements of students across Kirklees have been confirmed by the Department for Education with new figures showing that local GCSE results in 2014 were above the national and regional average. In Kirklees, 55.1 per cent of students achieved at least five A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and maths, when their first results were taken into account. The national average was 52.6 per cent, while the average for Yorkshire and Humber was 53.4 per cent. Overall achievements for Kirklees young people taking A-Level and level 3 vocational qualifications also continue to be strong. In total, 99.5 per cent of learners achieved at least two substantial level 3 qualifications (A-level or equivalent) compared with the national average of 97.9 per cent.
Lunchtime concert
Dewsbury Town Hall welcomes prize winning student David Fearn from Halifax for a lunchtime concert on 12.30pm at 12th November. David’s programme stretches from the world of song, through opera to the great musicals of the 20th century. - a programme which certainly goes under the title ‘something for everyone’. David will be accompanied by pianist Jo Ramadan with competitively priced lunches available from 11.30am. Ticket holders can also enjoy a bite to eat and chat prior to sitting back and enjoying the uplifting musical programmes on offer. Tickets are £5 each, or £3.50 for concessions, and can be purchased from www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls or by calling the Kirklees box office on 01484 223 200.
Library on wheels
An exciting new children’s mobile library was officially launched by Leeds City Council this week as literature got mobile. Joining Councillor Katherine Mitchell at the unveiling outside Leeds Central Library, was popular local children’s author and illustrator Kate Pankhurst, who has designed the characters that adorn the vehicle. As part of the day, families, children and young people had the opportunity to speak to Kate as well as draw some of her characters in a fun environment. With the new edition, there are now two children mobile libraries in the council’s fleet, which play a key role in the continued ambition of the library service to extend its reach in communities, and provide more reading and information resources to young people.

The two-day spectacular took place on Saturday and Sunday at the National Media Museum (NMM) and City Park thanks to generous support of organisations and businesses across the city and beyond. Ann Barratt, family liaison officer at Born in Bradford said: “We were hoping that hundreds of families from across the district would join us in our family festival of fun taking place in the centre of Bradford last weekend, and we were not disappointed. “The festival is a new venture for us, following on from the success of the Teddy Bear Picnics that were held in previous years and we had an action-packed programme planned to keep little hands busy.” Thanks to new support from Better Start, the University of Bradford, DiggerLand, and The Orange Grove, in Saltaire, this year families were invited to ‘become explorers’. Following an interactive trail that showcases some of the ground-breaking research
being undertaken by the research team, children and adults alike took part in fun interactive activities, whilst learning at the same time. The first 1,000 families to arrive at the NMM also received an explorer pack, complete with an explorer trail and a free gift. The Born in Bradford project which started in 2007 is tracking the lives of 13,500 babies and their families from different cultures and backgrounds - information gathered from those families helps national and worldwide studies looking at what causes childhood illnesses. Now those youngsters are getting older, the BiB Project came up with the idea of
putting on a festival instead that brought science, technology, stories, all sorts of characters and of course teddy bears to the city centre. Mrs Barratt added: “Whether people were part of the research project or interested in finding out more, the festival celebrated being Born in Bradford and was open to all families. “With 75 Dorothys also making a guest appearance fresh from Oz, there really was no place like Bradford last weekend.”

CLOGGED: Fatty oils have been the cause of more than 50 blockages in Bradford Moor’s sewers over the last five years (stock images provided by Yorkshire Water)
RESIDENT: Hena Begum has lived on Amberley Street, Bradford, for more than 20 years and was issued with one of the Fat Vats to dispose of her cooking oil
Fat VAT expanded Bradford’s energy success is ‘changing behaviour of community’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A renewable energy scheme, which saw bradford households collect their used cooking oil rather than throw it away, has been deemed a ‘big success’ and is set to roll out to a further 50 homes. Six months on from the launch of the Fat Vat scheme, and Yorkshire Water have reported that more than 500 litres of cooking oil has been collected from 85 participating residents from Bradford Moor. The liquid is converted into a biofuel by the renewable energy experts, Living Fuel, and the total amount collected today is enough to power up a microwave for up to 1,500 hours. Duncan Woodhead, network protection technician at Yorkshire Water, was thrilled with the success of the project so far and was excited to see the project expanding.
“The response from the local community to this trial has been excellent and people really do understand the difference they can make by changing their behaviour,” Mr Woodhead said. “We’ve been delighted with the amount of liquid we’ve managed to collect already and are looking forward to offering this to more people, which will help us generate more renewable energy and further reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases entering our network.” By collecting the cooking oil, rather than dumping it down the drain, the scheme has also helped prevent the blockage of sewers created when oils solidify and create ‘fatbergs’. Since the start of the Fat Vat project, not one single blockage has been reported on either of the streets involved. These statistics are a major improvement on previous results which showed that the Bradford Moor area had been
affected by more than 80 sewage blockages in the past five years. As part of the scheme, Yorkshire Water has also teamed up with the local Karmand Centre to learn more about residents’ cooking habits and further inform locals about the problems that occur with the wrong methods of disposal for cooking oil.
“By working together, Yorkshire Water and the Karmand Centre have succeeded in changing the way people in this small area of Bradford dispose of their cooking oil. Nasa Hussain, from the Karmand Centre, added: “By working together, Yorkshire Water and the Karmand Centre have succeeded in changing the way people in this small area of Bradford dispose of their cooking oil. “Most people were unaware of what happened when oil was poured into the drains but this scheme has made a difference.”

Up to 300 bids for one house SHORTAGE: Due to legislation such as the bedroom tax, Leeds’ housing dilemma has worsened
Diversion
The roundabouts along the A650 Sir Fred Hoyle Way (Bingley ByPass) and Aire Valley Road are scheduled to be resurfaced over three consecutive weekends in November. The three roundabouts being resurfaced along this stretch of the by-pass are Cottingley, Crossflatts and Marley. Resurfacing work is set to start with the Cottingley roundabout from 5am on Saturday 1st November to approximately 5am on Monday 3rd November. To make sure that the works are carried out as safely and quickly as possible the by-pass will need to be closed in both directions, between the Cottingley roundabout and the Ferncliffe Road junction in Bingley with diversions in place.
With a waiting list of more than 24,000, housing in Leeds has never been such a problem, as people struggle to find a home in the city. Earlier this week, at a meeting for the Housing and Regeneration Scrutiny Board, Cllr Peter Gruen, the council’s executive member for housing matters, said that current circumstances mean the demand for housing is four times higher
than supply. In some areas of the city, he continued by saying that between 200 and 300 applications are made for a single property leading to many individuals and families being left disappointed. He added: “The pressures on the lettings system have been magnified in the last year, for example through the bedroom tax,” he said. “We simply have
not got the [smaller] properties.” As well as the aforementioned bedroom tax, the impact of right-to-by on council stocks is also causing problems in the property market with a shortage of certain types of property. Reviews are currently underway by the council looking at its overall letting policy and ways of streamlining this process into one city-wide strategy.

China in Calderdale
Delegates from the Chinese province of Jiangxi visited Calderdale this week, developing links to support tourism and economic development. Six Chinese delegates visited Halifax Town Hall on Tuesday 28th October, where they met the Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Pat Allen and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Stephen Baines. Gifts were exchanged, and a formal agreement of friendship was signed, strengthening the relationship between the Jiangxi region and Calderdale. Greetland Academy also prepared a collection of work to give to the delegates, highlighting the possible opportunities to develop relationships between Calderdale and Chinese schools. Like Calderdale, Jiangxi is putting a major effort into developing tourism, having a similar combination of heritage and landscape, and is also developing its use of digital approaches to tourism and economic development

Giving teen is ‘Child of Courage’ winner
No.1Volunteer
A Bradford teenager rounded off a memorable year earlier this month after he was named Yorkshire Children of Courage Award’s Volunteer of the Year. As reported in the previous issue of Asian Express, 18-yearold Mohammed Usman, from Great Horton, was nominated for the award after raising a total of £1,379 since the start of the year in support of the international charity, Free the Children. Last week, the Grange Technology Sixth Form student
attended the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards night and was successful in his category, collecting his award from TV news presenter Stephanie McGovern. “It was a real honour to just be nominated,” he said. “The work I did in school with the Rafiki chains was not for this kind of recognition but to help those in need. “For me, the main focus of the project was helping raise funds for education. We are blessed to
have the education we have here and I wanted to do something to help others.” In January, the determined volunteer became an ambassador for Free the Children and has never looked back. His enthusiasm and passion resulted in him being chosen to speak at We Day UK, Free the Children's signature youth empowerment event, where he addressed 12,000 people, alongside the likes of entrepreneur Richard Branson
and Prince Harry. Yet Mohammed did not stop there. In order to fundraise for the communities that the charity works with, Mohammed recruited four friends to help sell Rafiki chains at his school. Rafiki chains are hand crafted by Maasai mamas in Kenya; the profit that they make when sold goes to a Free the Children community to provide clean water, food, health, education or alternative income.

Deal for the District
Council members in Bradford want to talk to local people about a New Deal for their District as part of nationwide cuts affecting the region. People are being invited to tell the Council their ideas about how services could be delivered differently and give their views about what services are most important to local communities and businesses, as national funding for public services continues to be cut. A series of events are being held to talk directly with local residents, with the next one set to take place in Bradford City centre on 6th November at the City Centre Banqueting Hall. By next year the Council will have cut its spending by over £170 million since 2011. Between now and 2020 the money for Council services is forecast to reduce by another £130 million, that’s nearly a third from £420 million today to around £290 million.

GONE: Haroon Rashid Aswat has been wanted by US authorities since his initial arrest in 2005 and was finally extradited on 21st October
October 2014 - 4th Edition
A terror suspect from Dewsbury, wanted by authorities in the US in connection with his past working relationship with the notorious Islamist extremist, Abu Hamza, has been extradited from the UK. Haroon Rashid Aswat has long been accused of planning to set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon in 1999, along with Hamza, and was initially arrested back in August 2005. Warrants for his arrest were issued on behalf of the US authorities which claimed that between the period of 1st October 1999 and 30th April 2000, Aswat conspired with others to control and manage people who would be employed for ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting a political object, namely to make hijrah to, and to fight jihad in, Afghanistan’. Aswat’s prolonged extradition was a lengthy process and was complicated even further last month after it was reported that he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. The suspect’s lawyers had argued that their client may be susceptible to suffering from a relapse if he was held in an American jail whilst pending a trial and wanted assurances for his care. Home Secretary Theresa May was therefore made to obtain such promises from US officials before his extradition could take place. Finally, last week, the 40-

Aswat was taken from Broadmoor Hospital on the morning of Tuesday 21st October to a British Airport and handed over to US authorities. Secrets of the Henna Girl Author Sufiya Ahmed spent a day at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), addressing sixth form politics students and year 9 girls to talk about her novel ‘Secrets of the Henna Girl’. The book tells the story of a 16 year old girl living in Yorkshire, whose parents try to force her into an arranged marriage back in the country of their origin, Pakistan. Sufiya was born in India but has spent most of her life in the UK. She is a full-time author but is also the founder of the BIBI Foundation, a non-profit making organisation which arranges for under-privileged children to visit the Houses of Parliament. GSAL’s Ruth Tay (of Shadwell), year 9, said: “Sufiya Ahmed took the year 9 girls on an engaging journey through her 16 year struggle to become a published author, stopping off on the way at the Nine O’Clock News, jetting off around the world to meet advertising clients and the Houses of Parliament. There we heard about the group of campaigners who inspired Secrets of the Henna Girl by petitioning for making forced marriage illegal. The eye-opening tale of Zeba – a normal 16-year-old girl who travels to Pakistan with her family, discovering her fixed engagement to her cousin has been decided and binding. The engagement scene was acted out with relish by volunteers, with
the aid of some authentic jingling dancing belts and a bridal veil. “This is hoped to be the start of a fresh series, based on hard reality aimed at teenagers, centred on topics like acid violence and Syria – hopefully raising awareness for people who are trapped in these stories themselves.”

If it wasn’t already a foregone conclusion it is now. Bradford is the official Curry Capital of Britain after once again clinching the title earlier this week. Seeing off competition from major cities across the country, West Yorkshire’s reigning champions made it an unprecedented four wins in a row, as the team of restaurants and members of Visit Bradford, excelled in this year’s contest. The 2014 title bid included a number of initiatives and activities, such as a series of poppadom challenges, an Asian afternoon tea and a healthy-style Asian cookbook created in connection with the NHS. Peter Grove, organiser and founder of the contest, was full of praise for Bradford’s outstanding effort, with the city’s score increasing nearly nine per cent on last year's total. “It is as if they have found the magic formula,” he said. “Of all the competing cities they have understood the underlying message of the event to promote cohesion where there was division and have used curry as a bonding agent to bring different aspects of Bradford’s society together. “As well as curry lovers and restaurateurs, they managed to bring together local businesses...They managed to portray the local pride they have in all things ‘Bradford’ so much so that we will be using their approach as a blueprint for next year.” The Curry Capital of Britain is an annual competition which sees cities from all over the UK compete to be crowned the nation’s Curry Capital. This year, 20 cities and regions including Birmingham, Leeds, and

London took part in the contest, which involved hosting a number of fundraising initiatives with proceeds going to The Curry Tree charity. Bradford’s successful bid was masterminded by the Visit Bradford team and the restaurant quartet of Aakash, Kipling's, Shimla Spice and Zaara's. Azhar Mahmood, restaurant manager at Aakash, praised the efforts of the whole city who ‘supported’ the city’s project throughout. “It’s hard to put into words what this award means to us,” he said. “All praises and thanks go to all the customers who have supported the restaurants, and the restaurants that have supported the city. “I think together as Bradford we just love our curry.” Iftikhar Hussain, restaurant manager at Shimla Spice and Mohammed Rafiq, of Kipling's, reiterated Mr Mahmood’s comments. “I am very proud to be a
Bradfordian right now,” Mr Rafiq said. “We have basically become the elite when it comes to the Indian curry industry and have surpassed Glasgow’s record of three titles. “This event is extremely prestigious and it goes to show the amount of effort that has been put into the award. It proves a point that we are still number one here in England and even around the world. “When people think Bradford they think curry.” Patricia Tillotson, tourism manager at Visit Bradford, added: “Winning the hotly contested competition this many times in a row is a first and we’re pleased to have set the bar so high. “It’s been a pleasure to work with this year’s team in our bid to be crowned Curry Capital of Britain for the fourth consecutive year.” Visit Bradford will be presented with its award during a ceremony taking place next week in Bradford.

DONATIONS: Members of the Govindbhai Foundation hand over a cheque worth £6,350 to the Saraswati Vidyalay UK charity HAND-OVER: £6,350 was handed over to the local cause, Fulfil the Wish, which provides trips and activities for children with disabilities
£100,000 raised in EIGHT years Family takes charity to heart in fundraising efforts Over the past decade, the Govindbhai Foundation has been raising thousands of pounds for local causes in Bradford and their latest event has taken their total donations well above the £100,000 mark. Set up by a team of nine brothers and sisters, who got together with their mum, spouses, children and grandchildren, the Foundation is a unique family-run operation. In the short time since 2007, the registered charity has held an annual dinner dance which raises funds for a cause close to home and one in Gujarat, India. This year, the Fulfil the Wish initiative and Saraswati Vidyalay UK charities were selected to benefit from the fundraising efforts, which eventually totalled £12,700. Cheques were handed over last weekend to both causes, with the dinner dance, a Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and a fouryear-old’s testing three-kilometre run, helping to raise the funds. The Govindbhai Foundation, (GBF) established by the family of local resident, Harkishan Mistry, and named after his late father, has raised £110,000 for various charities over the past eight years. Mr Mistry, speaking on behalf of the foundation, explained how this year’s activities had helped the group smash through their latest milestone after expanding their fundraising efforts past the annual dinner dance. “This year we took a new approach to fundraising,” he explained. “In addition to our dinner-dance, four members of the family took on the challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks climb, whilst one of the youngest members, Rohan Mistry, ran 3km to raise money for the GBF. “It's so satisfying to see the younger members of the family getting involved and best of all, we've spent eight years successfully fundraising - while having fun. “I'm delighted that once again we managed to raise so much money. It'll make
a huge difference to children's lives.” One of the charities that benefited from this year’s donations was the aforementioned Fulfil the Wish charity which provides activity and sightseeing holidays for children and young people with disabilities and complex health needs. Mary Appleton, a former nurse and founder of the charity, said she wanted to express a ‘massive thank you’ to the GBF for a total donation of £6,350. Ms Appleton added: “All the money will go directly to funding a special holiday to the Bendrigg Trust in May 2015, enabling 25 children with a range of disabilities to have the unique opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of activities such as the zip wire, climbing wall, abseiling and much more. “I want to say thank you so much for everything they have done, you have no idea of how much happiness this will bring to some amazing children and just how much I appreciate what they have done.” Hasmukh Shah, National coordinator of Saraswati Vidyalay added his thanks for their identical donation. “I am very thankful to the trustees of the Bradford-based charity GBF who are sponsoring five one-teacher schools for five years in a remote part of Nepal,” he said. “Children in these impoverished tribal areas will be empowered through basic literacy education. Although GBF is local it continues to support many worthwhile causes worldwide.”

www.asianexpress.co.uk A new headteacher in Dewsbury is already making quite the impact on her primary school despite only taking up the role at the start of the academic year. Just walking past Carlton Junior and Infant School, it is clear to see that a change is occurring. Whether it is the new school sign which has been erected, with the motto, ‘Dream, Aspire, Achieve’ or the enthusiasm of the lollipop man who is only full of praise for the way the school is being operated, the school is certainly full of exciting energy. These changes, and the praises, are down to a dedicated team of staff and their latest leader, newly appointed head, Rizwana Ahmed. Ms Ahmed took over the reins last month after serving as the deputy-head for the past six years. In her short time in charge, Ms Ahmed has begun to implement her new core values into the school as she attempts to take education ‘beyond the class room’ with a greater involvement from the local community.
LEADER: Rizwana Ahmed has been in the role of head teacher since the start of the academic year, having served as assistant head previously
October 2014 - 4th Edition “Although my feet haven’t touched the ground since I started, I have enjoyed every moment of Headship,” she said. “It is the best job in the world because I know I can make a difference to the lives of young people and their families. “At the heart of everything we do is the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum provision and morale values. “Together with the staff, parents, governors and children alike we have created our new vision that says ‘Together we take small steps to make big dreams come true’.” Ms Ahmed adds that due to her position and ethnicity, it also enables her to act as a role model for the 206 pupils at Carlton Junior and Infant School, mainly from South-Asian backgrounds. “As an Asian female in a position of authority I felt that I can influence a culture of high aspirations,” she said. “Pride and dignity and a sense of worth and belonging is paramount for our children’s future and I am committed to raising the aspiration of our children.” Amongst Ms Ahmed’s other objectives is the plan to secure funding to open the school’s own self-sustaining early learning unit, and provide a nursery and
children’s centre for the community. Signs are all positive for the school, which was rated as ‘Good’ across the board in its latest Ofsted inspection, and the place of education is even bidding to become the first school in the country to achieve a new accreditation. The White Ribbon Award would commend the school for working towards educating children about society’s problems including bullying, and is likely to receive the appraisal next month. Ms Ahmed says the award again pushes her aim of working with the community to the forefront of the school’s operations. “As I mentioned, our work with the parents and the community is paramount to the whole child’s development and the white ribbon campaign introduced by Ikram Butt promotes just this,” she said. “It has helped raise awareness of issues which affect our parents and children. This all links with progress and achievement but with well-being and safeguarding in mind which are crucial when thinking about the whole child.” The school is expected to receive the award on Tuesday 25th November to coincide with National White Ribbon Day.

Girls unite in run for Palestine
A group of determined fundraisers dusted off their running shoes earlier this week as they completed a challenging 10km run for charity. Motivated by the efforts of a grandmother, the group completed the trek around Temple Newsam last weekend and raised more than £10,000 which will go towards helping innocent civilians caught up in conflicts in Syria and Palestine. Over the past two months, the group of girls, made up of mostly students, have been training for the race and took part in the event donning the colours of the two nations being represented. Every Saturday morning a 5km event is held around Temple Newsam’s grounds so to complete their challenge of 10km, the girls pushed themselves to complete the testing course twice. Sadiya Salim took part in the event and said her determination to complete the run came from two sources, including one of the most unlikely participants. “The two things that kept me going after the first lap were the donations from everyone without their belief and support, I wouldn’t have been fired up – and my friend Sania’s Grandma. “She completed the full distance, with her trainers on and is a true inspiration for us all.”
RUN: The team of runners prepare to set off on their 10km route at Temple Newsam last weekend
Explaining why the girls had decided to take on the run, she added: “The situation in Syria is now so dire that funding for food and medical aid is not reaching those most vulnerable- leaving many to fend for themselves with no hope for survival. “In Palestine whole families
are being wiped out by merciless drone attacks and those left behind are forced to wander through the wreckage of their old lives, with no food, water or access to medical aid.” Donations made to the group’s Virgin Money Giving page will go towards paying for food parcels for starving
children and families, as well as vital medical supplies and surgical items. Mattresses and blankets will also be purchased. Due to the collections starting in Ramadan, the government has also pledged to double the final total, excluding Gift Aid, taking the total to over £16,000.

Business news ver the past 40 years, Tubzee has seen its fair share of changes. From starting out as one man’s distant dream of bringing kulfi ice cream to the UK to growing into a worldwide award-winning business. Yet, with all the changes, one thing has remained, the irresistible tastes and unmatched quality which continues to set Tubzee apart from all competitors. Now operating across Europe, Asia and even Africa, the brainchild of the late Mohammad Zaman has most recently been awarded the prestigious Golden Star award from the iTQi in Belgium. Blind-tasted by 120 Michelin standard chefs, the ice cream was the only British contender to achieve the accolade to reaffirm itself as a leader in the ice cream industry – a huge achievement from such humble beginnings. It was the 1970’s when Mr Zaman moved to the UK with his family and began life as the local ice cream man, working out of his ice cream van with the help of his children. Despite not speaking much English, the passionate businessman excelled in the role and soon expanded his fleet of vans and delivery vehicles. Upon a visit to Pakistan, one of the brothers, Asif Hussain, now heavily involved with the production side of the business, came across the concept of kulfi and noticed a gap in the market back in the UK. After experimenting with several recipes from South Asia, and only after approval from friends and family, the first kulfi product was developed in the family kitchen and Tubzee was born. Despite numerous setbacks from independent retailers, Mr Zaman and his sons worked tirelessly to ensure their product reached an untapped market, putting the kulfi product on a stick for the first time. Slowly but surely, retailers began to take on the produce and as word-of-mouth spread, the business began to grow from small independent businesses, into larger companies and eventually the nation’s major supermarkets. Mr Zaman’s dream continued to grow as the years went by and even after his passing, his family remained committed to continuing his legacy, taking Tubzee to new heights and places never before ventured. Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated sales team, spearheaded by Head of Sales, Talib Hussain, the business continued to excel in UK and eventually entered international markets. An ice cream range was launched seven years ago and

All products are prepared in the same caring manner to ensure every item receives the Tubzee stamp of approval. Technically, gelato can be called ‘gelato’ if its contents have a certain amount of fat in them, allowing big companies to mass produce the dessert at a fraction of the cost. However, with quality at the heart of everything Tubzee does, the company continues to prepare their gelato in traditional small batches, keeping tastes and flavours locked in. Now operating on a truly global scale, Tubzee has grown into a much-loved family brand – not bad for one man’s vision from his Halifax home, 40 years ago.

t is not uncommon for businesses to spend substantial sums on marketing, but there are dangers involved in using a marketing campaign which aggressively targets a competitor by reference to its trade marks. Businesses should be aware that the Courts will not allow them to “ride on the coat tails” of others or build unfairly on a well-known competitor’s reputation, even where the business itself is a well-known brand in its own right. In a previous article, we looked at the case of Specsavers –v- Asda which concerned a marketing campaign by Asda to promote its in-store optician services. Asda used various marketing materials in their stores and on their website which included the taglines “Be a real spec saver at Asda” and “Spec saving at Asda”. Asda had also used a logo mark of two non-intersecting ovals similar to those used by Specsavers. Specsavers issued proceedings in the High Court for trade mark infringement and passing off. The Community Trade Mark (CTM) Regulation provides the owner of a CTM with the right to prevent unauthorised third parties from using any sign where there exists a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public and any sign which takes unfair advantage of, or is detrimental to, the distinctive character of the CTM. The Court of Appeal found that the use of both straplines amounted to an infringement and was unfair. Using Specsavers’ brand as a reference point for consumers to convey that Asda’s service was of good value did amount to taking an advantage. The Court rejected
the argument that this was merely comparative advertising. The Court of Appeal sought guidance from the Court of Justice of the European Union as to the importance to be attached to the colour of a trade mark which, although not registered, has become synonymous with that mark when assessing public confusion and unfair advantage. The European Court subsequently found that the use of a composite mark (a word mark superimposed over a logo mark) is capable of amounting to genuine use of a trade mark, provided that the use of the composite mark does not alter the distinctive character of the logo as registered. Further, where a trade mark has not been registered in colour (only in black and white) but has been extensively used by the brand owner in a particular colour such that it has become distinctive, this is relevant to the global assessment of likelihood of confusion and unfair advantage. Interestingly, the European Court also confirmed that it is relevant to consider whether the alleged infringer is itself associated with the colour in question. Here, the fact that Asda itself is associated with the colour green could influence the perception of the public and result in a reduced likelihood of confusion. The case will return to the Court of Appeal for an application of the guidance provided by the European Court to the specific facts in question. ore than 25 unsung heroes were recognised at an awards ceremony in Leeds last week as the White Rose Community Awards returned. The third annual awards ceremony saw presentations to people involved in a wide range of activities that benefit others - from charitable, environmental, historical and educational projects to initiatives that support the unemployed, vulnerable women and disadvantaged children. Among the award winners were Habib Khan, Business Development Manager for the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston, and his colleague Shanaz Gul. The pair were recognised for their work on projects that have built bridges and encouraged community cohesion and were joined by Mohammed Atique Ur-Rehman, who received his award in recognition of his outstanding fundraising for charities that help people around the world. The accolade is the first Ms Gul has received in her role with the charity and she said it was an ‘honour’ to have been
recognised. “I am very humbled and proud to receive the award and feel very blessed just to do the work which I do on a daily basis,” she said. “We focus on youth development work with projects such as the Preventative NEET (Not in Employment Education Training) which gives guidance to young people in all different aspects of life.” White Rose Shopping Centre Director James Bailey, who presented the awards with Centre Manager, Dean Stratton, said every recipient more than deserved to be recognised for their work this year. Mr Bailey said: “The awards have grown year on year and with each ceremony we have been delighted to celebrate the caring, compassionate, courageous and community-minded spirit of people of all ages, whose actions are an inspiration to others.” Each award winner received a certificate and a distinctive hand-crafted bowl produced at The Glassroom at Cockburn School, Leeds, from a design created by year nine student Adam Foxton.

Aakash are ‘king of the curries’
Double delight for West Yorkshire restaurant
C
leckheaton’s Aakash restaurant had further reasons to cheer last week as they followed up the city’s Curry Capital title with another award of their own. Now in its fourth year, the English Curry Awards commend restaurants over a range of fields with different regions receiving a host of nominations. Based on a public vote, this year’s winner of the ‘Restaurant of the Year’ accolade for the Yorkshire region was Aakash, who received their trophy and certificate at an event in Salford. Success in the contest comes just days after Bradford was confirmed as the Curry Capital for the fourth year running and for restaurant manager, Azhar Mahmood, it was hard to put into
words what the accolade means. “It does leave you a bit lost for words really,” Mr Mahmood said. “To have been voted as the top restaurant in the region by our diners is a fantastic achievement. “Bradford and Yorkshire as a whole is full of some amazing restaurants so to have been singled out in the region is a very proud moment.” Mr Mahmood added that he now has his fingers crossed that Aakash could potentially pull off a clean sweep in this year’s most prestigious curry awards. “We’ve won the Curry Capital bid and now this award, so the only major one left is the British Curry Awards which I think are in December,” he added.

The dinner also had a Royal seal of approval from HRH Prince Charles, as this year’s Principle charities were Mosaic and The Prince’s Trust, founded by Prince Charles. INQUEST: Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Abbas Khan was found hanging in a cell in Syria after being detained as a suspected terrorist. His family insists he was murdered
‘Unlawfully British killed’ surgeon A London surgeon, who travelled to Syria as a volunteer but was locked up by authorities, was unlawfully killed just days before his planned release, a London jury investigating the case ruled this week. 32-year-old Abbas Khan, was detained in a Syrian cell almost two years ago, just 48 hours after arriving in the northern city of Aleppo. He was found dead in his cell last December. Syrian authorities had initially claimed that the orthopaedic surgeon killed himself days before his scheduled release yet an inquest into his death has now ruled otherwise. Hundreds of Western Europeans are suspected of travelling to Syria to fight with Islamic State insurgents who have seized control of large parts of Syria and Iraq. Mr Khan’s family had always said that Abbas had gone to the region solely to offer his medical services. Speaking outside court in central London on Monday,
killed in Syrian jail
Khan’s brother, Afroze, said: “We have always maintained that he was mistreated, maltreated and tortured by the Syrian authorities ... [and that] he was murdered by the Syrians. “Today, our position as a family has been vindicated completely. All the aspersions and allegations against my brother - that he had gone for any other reason apart from helping the innocent civilians have been disproved today.” Khan’s mother, Fatima, spent five months working for her son’s release in Damascus and was due to pick him up in December 2013 when he was finally released. However, upon arrival at the prison, she was told her son had killed himself. She said she was now grateful to the jury who had proved the claims that her son had not
commited suicide but she felt let down by both the Syrian and British justice systems. “There was no justice in Syria like we have British justice here – no court, no justice – otherwise my son would have been released,” she said. “I couldn’t save my son. I trusted judges, lawyers and ministers but everyone lied to me. They stabbed me in my back.”

A vow to clear his name Former police officer who quit force over wife-beating says he’ll pursue legal action after sexual assault allegations A former police officer who was cleared of a string of sexual offences this month, now insists that he the victim of was 'institutional racism' by his former police force. 39-year-old Mustaq Patala, from Blackburn, Lancashire was forced to quit the force back in 2011 for beating his wife, after she claimed that he had subjected her to a long campaign of violence which began in 1999 during her pregnancy. His conviction for assaulting his wife resulted in Patala landing 180 hours unpaid work. After Patala completed community service, he travelled for pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia but was then was detained again on his return after two women alleged that he had sexually assaulted them. Patala, a father-of-three, faced two trials accused of 14 charges of rape, three of sexual assault and another charge of perverting justice. A trial opened last year but had to be abandoned due to legal problems. A second trial judge then decided not guilty verdicts should be entered after a week of submissions. But a judge at Preston Crown Court threw out the case earlier this month following legal submissions. Patala was cleared of rape and sexual assault at Preston Crown Court and now claims police failed to fully investigate the claims made against him. Patala - who was once one of the youngest

Asian police inspectors in Britain - has now vowed to take legal action against Lancashire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service claiming he had been a victim of 'jealousy' in the force due to his 'meteoric' rise through the ranks. He said that institutional racism exists profoundly within the police service. He told a regional newspaper that whilst awaiting trial he had spent time in prison and said that he had to notify the prison staff that he was an ex-police officer and may come into contact with people he had arrested whilst in the force. He said that he was kept behind closed doors 23hours a day for protection. After joining the police, Patala - a former school governor w a s quickly
promoted to inspector to oversee neighbourhood policing and was well-known locally. He had helped introduce reforms in the constabulary and his performance in police exams was said to among the best in the country. He says other officers were jealous of his quick rise through the force and the sex charges should never have been brought against him Explaining the case, a CPS spokesman said: “After receiving medical evidence relating to the complainant in this case the prosecution applied to the judge to have the evidence given by the complainant in an earlier trial adduced as hearsay evidence in this trial. 'After hearing legal argument from prosecution and defence about this issue the judge refused the application and the CPS decided that in these circumstances it would not be appropriate to require the complainant to give evidence. 'We concluded that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction against any of the defendants and therefore offered no evidence at court. 'We take all cases of alleged sexual offences extremely seriously, however the health and welfare of alleged victims remains one of our prime considerations.'

TRAGIC: Alim Uddin was killed earlier this year after a row over the purchase of a bicycle
www.asianexpress.co.uk
October 2014 - 4th Edition
Teen murdered over £90 bicycle row 16-year-old pleads guilty to murder A teenage boy, who stabbed to death an A-Level student after arguing about the sale of a bicycle, has pleaded guilty to murder. 17-year-old Alim Uddin, from Brixton, was killed in May this year after arranging to meet the other youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to settle a dispute regarding a bike. He pleaded guilty to unlawful killing at the Old Bailey on Wednesday 22nd October,
SCENE: Alim was found collapsed on the doorstep of a flat at Tilford House, by a local resident, with seven incise wounds to his body
During the case, the court heard that Alim went to Tilford House in Brixton to receive £90 which he had initially given to the accused in exchange for the purchase of a bicycle. After failing to hand over the bike, the pair arranged to meet to hand the cash back over, with Alim next found lying on the ground outside a block of flats by a resident. He had been stabbed seven times, four to the front of his chest, one to the lower back, one to the shoulder and one to the thigh, and was pronounced dead one hour after arriving at King’s Cross Hospital. Prosecutor David Jeremy QC said friends of Alim had spoken of how the two teens were ‘wary of each other’ but added that ‘Alim was not angry or expecting a fight...he just wanted his money back’. “He felt he had been ripped off and he was angry that [the 16 yearold] had ripped him off,” Mr Jeremy said.
“There were, on both sides, expressions of youthful bravado but nothing that suggested it would lead to a killing.” He added that the injuries suffered by Alim, and the lack of injury suffered by the guilty party, painted a clear picture of how Alim came to his death. The accused was seen on CCTV returning to his home before leaving shortly after, wearing a different jumper as he headed to his great aunt’s house in Tooting, South West London. Upon a search of the defendant’s home, a bloodstained sweatshirt was found which included DNA matching Alim’s on it, whilst another top and pair of jeans were found soaking in the bath. The murder weapon was tracked down inside a black bag, with the handle wrapped inside a glove. Initially, the accused was set to face trial after denying the killing yet changed his plea to guilty last week. He is set to be sentenced on Wednesday 12th November.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has secured a €1 billion (£800 million) funding pledge at the European Council meetings in Brussels, following a call for European leaders to do more to fight the disease in West Africa. As part of the commitment, the UK has boosted its own response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa by £80 million, bringing its total contribution to more than £200 million. The Prime Minister wrote to the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and fellow leaders last week to warn of the need to act fast to contain and defeat this deadly virus, stating: “If we do not significantly step up our collective response now, the loss of life and damage to the political, economic and social fabric of the region will be substantial and the threat posed to our citizens will also grow." The Prime Minister set out that the immediate priority was to raise contributions from the EU and its member states to €1 billion in total, which has now been achieved. Britain's own redoubled efforts to fight Ebola follow a visit to Sierra Leone by International Development Secretary Justine Greening to see the results of Britain’s first tranche of support and identify next steps in the UK’s international work. The additional £80 million will increase the number of burial units and support the creation of up to 200 community care centres across the country. Together these measures will promote early diagnosis, isolation and treatment and so reduce the risk of the infection spreading. David Cameron said: “Ebola is one of the worst public health emergencies we have faced in a generation. I have been absolutely determined that
Britain, with other countries, will lead the way in dealing with this. “Not only should we feel a moral obligation as a wealthy country to help, but also because Ebola directly threatens both our national interests and people in the United Kingdom. “That is why Britain has pledged over £205 million and has British troops and health workers going to West Africa. “I said I wanted to come to this European Council and get other countries in the European Union to more than double the EU effort, to get a billion Euros committed. “That is what we have achieved.” Justine Greening said: “Visiting Sierra Leone was a chance to see the results we are already achieving in our fight against Ebola. This includes the heroic efforts of British medics, soldiers
and humanitarian workers, as well as Sierra Leoneans who are volunteering in their thousands to be trained as healthcare and burial workers. “Being on the ground also gave me a clear sense of what is needed in the next phase of our work, and the steps we must take to ensure our efforts match the scale of the crisis the country is facing. “Britain is determined to stand with the people of Sierra Leone as they battle Ebola.” Ms Greening’s recent visit was also an opportunity to thank the British heroes who have travelled to Sierra Leone to fight this disease, including humanitarian aid workers, medics, government officials and military personnel, all of whom are playing a crucial role in Britain’s response.
The additional support announced today includes the following: £10 million to ensure safe burials This funding will include support for the important work of the burial teams run by the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC). Ten teams are already fully operational and the IFRC have begun recruitment to increase their capacity. It will also support NGOs in their work to help the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health in promoting behaviour change activities to ensure safe burial practices.
£50 million to diagnose and isolate Ebola cases Early isolation of Ebola patients is essential to halting the spread of infection to others. This support will cover the staffing and running costs, as well medical supplies and protective equipment, for local diagnosis and care centres already being piloted across Sierra Leone – and enable the construction of up to 200 centres over the next three months. This will ensure thousands of patients across Sierra Leone receive a swift diagnosis and provide the isolation facilities needed to reduce the spread of the outbreak.
£20 million contribution to the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund This will ensure the UN has the resources needed to significantly step up their contribution to the Ebola effort in Sierra Leone and gives us a strong platform to lobby other countries to contribute to the global effort.

Iraqi Kurdish forces enter Syria to fight IS Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters entered the Syrian town of Kobani this week, to help push back Islamic State militants who have defied U.S. air strikes and threatened to massacre its Kurdish defenders. Kobani, on the border with Turkey, has been encircled by the Sunni Muslim insurgents for more than 40 days. Weeks of U.S.-led air strikes have failed to break their stranglehold, and Kurds are hoping the arrival of the peshmerga will turn the tide. The siege of Kobani - known in Arabic as Ayn al-Arab - has become a test of the U.S.-led coalition's ability to stop Islamic State's advance, and Washington has welcomed the peshmerga's deployment. A first contingent of about 10 peshmerga fighters crossed into
Kobani on 29th October from Turkey, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. A larger deployment of around 100 peshmerga fighters arrived by plane in southeastern Turkey, joined later that night by a land convoy of vehicles carrying heavy weapons including a cannon and truck-mounted high-calibre machine guns. In a compound protected by Turkish security forces near the border town of Suruc, the fighters were donning combat fatigues and preparing their weapons, a Reuters correspondent said. Syria condemned Turkey for allowing foreign fighters and "terrorists" to enter Syria in a violation of its sovereignty. Its foreign ministry described the move as a "disgraceful act".
Iraqi Kurdistan President Masoud Barzani said his region was prepared to deploy more forces to Kobani if asked. Islamic State has caused international alarm by capturing large expanses of Iraq and Syria, declaring an Islamic "caliphate" that has erased borders between the two. Its fighters have slaughtered or driven away Shi'ite Muslims, Christians and other communities who do not share their ultraradical brand of Sunni Islam. In Iraq, the bodies of 150 members of a Sunni tribe which fought Islamic State have been found in a mass grave, security officials said. Islamic State militants took the men from their villages to the city of Ramadi and killed them earlier this week.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS Eight Pakistani soldiers were killed in a major operation against militants in the country's Khyber tribal region this week, as the army declared its four-month old push against a main militant sanctuary in another tribal region, North Waziristan, a success. The clash with troops also left 21 militants dead and several wounded in the Spinqamar area, said an army statement issued late night. The army also said its troops have so far killed 1,100 militants in North Waziristan. Its casualty figures could not be independently confirmed as journalists are not allowed to report from the tribal regions. Civilians have been killed in previous operations. The army believes that militants
Eight Pakistan army soldiers killed who fled its North Waziristan operation took refuge in in Khyber. Earlier Wednesday, army spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa told reporters in the northwestern city of Peshawar that in the Khyber operation, military jets struck several militant hideouts, 44 militants in recent days. The latest casualties occurred when troops moved to clear the Spinqamar area. Bajwa accused neighboring Afghanistan of not providing "enough support" to the Pakistani operation
and allegedly failing to take action against militants who have fled across the frontier to hide among the Afghans. "Afghan authorities have not taken any action," he said. "They have not killed or arrested and handed over any militants to Pakistan." Bajwa did not substantiate those claims but such accusations from Islamabad are common amid tense relations between the two neighbors. Afghan officials did not immediately comment on the remarks.
Bajwa said that the offensive in North Waziristan, which was launched in June, was going according to plan and that its impact is being felt across Pakistan, with a decrease in "terrorist attacks, extortion and kidnappings." "Most areas and roads in North Waziristan have been cleared and reconstruction is underway," he said, adding that it was still unclear when the operation would be finished. He said troops seized 132.5 metric tons (146 tons) of explosives, thousands
of weapons and a large cache of ammunition. The tribal region was considered a sanctuary for local and foreign militant groups until the military launched its offensive there following a deadly militant attack on the country's busiest airport in Karachi. Bajwa said the results of the operation would have been even better if Afghan authorities had provided assistance. He said Pakistan informed Afghan authorities that militants and their leadership fled across the border and were camped out in Afghan territory from where they were launching attacks against Pakistani troops.
Four arrested for Karachi airport attack Pakistan police have arrested four men for planning and financing the deadly attack on Karachi international airport in June that left 38 dead. The brazen attack on Pakistan's busiest airport was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban. It led to the collapse of peace talks with the government and the launch of a long-awaited army offensive against militant hideouts in the North Waziristan tribal agency. Three suspects were arrested this week after a forth man who had been detained earlier led the police to his accomplices, police said. "We arrested all of them from

different places in Karachi and they belonged to a banned group linked with Al Qaeda," Raja Umar Khatab, a senior police official said. Police say that the four men arranged 20 million rupees ($194,000) to fund the attack. "They sent the money to the bordering areas to finance the training and acquiring weapons for the attack," Khatab said. Ten militants lay siege to the airport on a Sunday night in June holding control of the area until dawn. They stormed the terminal disguised as airport guards equipped with suicide vests, grenades and rocket launchers.

Ayesha Takia Azmi gives chicks a clucking chance Since her award-winning debut in ‘Taarzan: The Wonder Car’, it was clear that Ayesha Takia Azmi would be one to watch. She blew audiences and critics away in the thriller Wanted, and now India's sweetheart is starring in a role that is true to life for her: that of an animal advocate. Just in time for World Vegan Day on 1st November, Takia Azmi flashes her lovely smile in a new PETA India ad, that lets everyone know that "vegans make chicks happy!" Her co-star is one of the few "chicks" whose sweet face can hold her own next to Takia Azmi: a fluffy baby chick. Celebrated photographer Gaurav Sawn shot the ad, and talented artist Satyam Kadu did her hair and make-up. Takia Azmi also sat down with PETA India for an exclusive video interview. On set, Takia Azmi talked about how her respect for animals made her go vegan.
"It's beyond traumatic to hear the things that the animals go through when they are obviously slaughtered, the way they are kept, the way they are treated", she said. She thinks it is inexcusable that chickens' throats are slashed and they are dunked into scaldinghot feather-removal tanks, often while they are still conscious. She is proud that she helps end cruelty to animals every time she sits down to eat. "Being vegan is something that has changed my life tremendously", she said. Takia Azmi joins a long list of actors, athletes and other celebrities – including Lara Dutta, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Gupta, Sonu Sood, Richa Chadda, Pankaj Advani, Anil Kumble, Hema Malini, VVS Laxman, Amrita Rao, R Madhavan, Kartik Murali, Rahul Sharma and Monica Dogra – who have starred in provegetarian ads for PETA India.
ISIS producing chocolate?
Late last year, a Belgian chocolate maker changed its name from Italo Suisse, because the company no longer had any real association with either country. Now it's changing the name again - because the new name it picked was ISIS. ISIS, of course, is also the acronym derived from Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the jihadist group that arose in the Syrian civil war and now has invaded parts of Iraq. The group changed the name to just Islamic State in June, but the chocolate maker was
suffering by association. The company dates back to 1923 and chose the original name because its founder learned his trade in Italy and Switzerland. By 2013, its managers had decided to call it something else. “We chose ISIS as that was the brand name of our pralines and tablets,” marketing manager Desiree Libeert told Reuters by telephone. “Had we known there was a terrorist organisation with the same name, we would have never chosen that.”
Canada gunman arrest
Police arrested and charged a Pakistani gun collector living in Ontario this week, alleging he is a terrorist threat to Canada, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Thursday, quoting his attorney. Muhammad Aqeeq Ansari, a 30-year-old software designer, was arrested on Monday, according to his attorney, Anser Farooq, the Globe reported. The arrest came days after two attacks in
Ontario and Quebec that left two Canadian soldiers dead. Federal officials allege Ansari has ties to militants in Pakistan, that he had amassed an arsenal of firearms, and that he has expressed extreme views on Twitter, according to the Globe. He is being charged under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act with being a danger to the security of Canada, the newspaper said.

Black money: India pulls out of international info sharing pact
A day after the central government submitted a list of black money account holders to the Supreme Court, India pulled out of a multilateral information sharing agreement. The government move is surprising considering that the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement, signed by 51 countries in Berlin on Wednesday 29th October, enables automatic information sharing between the signatory countries. The agreement also would provide for collecting, exchanging information on tax payers' overseas assets. The report adds that an uncertainty over the ability to comply with confidentiality clause of the agreement led to the government move. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi submitted three sets of documents,
containing the list of 627 people having illegal accounts in foreign banks, to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover. The government also submitted a status report in a sealed cover. The apex court said only SIT chairman and vice chairman can open the seal and asked the investigating agency to submit the status report of its probe by Novemberend. The apex court allowed the Centre to put forth its grievances regarding various treaties with foreign countries before the SIT. The Supreme Court had earlier on Tuesday reprimanded the Centre after the latter released the names of just three account holders on Monday and asked it to release the names of all the people who have stashed away black money in foreign banks.
Shiv Sena to boycott oath-taking ceremony Shiv Sena has decided to boycott Bharatiya Janata Party's chief ministerdesignate Devendra Fadnavis' oath-taking ceremony this week after BJP hinted Sena's inclusion in the Maharashtra government will be unlikely. Earlier, the BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said no Sena leader will be inducted in the state government. Rudy, however, did not rule out a tie-up with Sena, saying talks are on with its former ally. The BJP leader was quoted by The Indian Express as saying: "It seems unlikely that any Shiv Sena minister will be sworn in tomorrow. Talks with Sena are on in an amicable atmosphere for a possible tieup in Maharashtra but there has been no outcome yet."
Fadnavis will be sworn in as the chief minister on 31st October. On Thursday, in an editorial in its mouthpiece, 'Saamna', Sena questioned the legitimacy of running a minority government. It said running a minority government is similar to enjoying power without responsibility. Sena also warned the BJP that a minority government is against the constitution. The editorial, as quoted in The Hindu, said, "The major challenge in front of Devendra Fadnavis is to prove majority in the state assembly. The stand of forming and running a minority government may
seem fine at present. But to enjoy power with such government is against the constitution." The editorial however said it "wholeheartedly welcomes" Fadnavis as the new chief minister-designate of Maharashtra, two days after the BJP anointed him. "We wholeheartedly
welcome the new CM of Maharashtra... We are confident that with Narendra (Modi) in Delhi and Devendra (Fadnavis) in Maharashtra, nobody can prevent 'achhe din' (good days) from coming to Maharashtra," the Shiv Sena said in an edit in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. (With inputs from agencies)

Clashes as Israeli police kill Palestinian suspected of shooting a Jew Israeli police on Thursday shot dead a 32year-old Palestinian man suspected of having tried hours earlier to kill a far-right Jewish activist, leading to fierce clashes in East Jerusalem and fears of a new Palestinian uprising. The Al-Aqsa compound, or Temple Mount, which is a central cause of the latest violence, was closed to all visitors as a security precaution. It was the first full closure of the site, venerated by both Jews and Muslims, in 14 years. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Israeli actions as "tantamount to a declaration of war". Moataz Hejazi's body lay in a pool of blood among satellite dishes on the rooftop of a three-storey house in Abu Tor, a district of Arab East Jerusalem, as Israeli forces sealed the area and repelled stone-throwing Palestinian protesters. Hejazi was suspected of shooting and wounding Yehuda Glick, a far-right religious activist who has led a campaign for Jews to be allowed to pray at the Al-Aqsa compound. Glick, a U.S.-born settler, was shot as he left a conference at the Menachem Begin Heritage Centre in Jerusalem late on Wednesday, his assailant escaping on the back of a motorcycle. A spokesman for the centre said Hejazi had worked at a restaurant there. Glick, 48, remains in serious but stable condition with four gunshot wounds, doctors said. Residents said hundreds of Israeli police were involved in the pre-dawn search for
Hejazi. He was tracked down to his family home in the winding, hilly backstreets of Abu Tor and eventually cornered on the terrace of an adjacent building. Locals identified the man as Hejazi, who was released from 11 years in an Israeli prison in 2012. Hejazi's father and brother were arrested. Israeli police fired sound bombs to keep back groups of angry residents, who shouted abuse as they watched the drama unfold from surrounding balconies. Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups, praised the shooting of Glick and mourned Hejazi's death. East Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war and has been occupied since, has been a source of intense friction in recent months, especially around Silwan, which sits in the shadow of the Old City and Al-Aqsa. Jewish settler organisations have acquired more than two dozen buildings in Silwan over the years, including nine in the past three months, and moved settler families into them, an effort to make the district more Jewish. Around 500 settlers now live among approximately 40,000 Palestinians residents. That process, combined with the tension over the site, which is the third-holiest shrine in Islam and the holiest place in Judaism, have led to the most-fractious atmosphere in East Jerusalem in more than a decade, locals say - since the second Intifada or uprising began in 2000.
‘Palestine is a state’ says Sweden’s Foreign Minister The Swedish government officially recognised the state of Palestine on Thursday, the first Western European country to do so, reflecting growing international exasperation over the moribund IsraeliPalestinian peace process. Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told reporters her government
hoped it would bring a new dynamic to the situation. “Our decision comes at a critical time because over the last year we have seen how the peace talks have stalled, how decisions over new settlements on occupied Palestinian land have complicated a two-state solution and how violence has returned to Gaza,” she
said. The move drew praise from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and criticism from Israel, and has displeased the United States, Israel's principle supporter. But Wallstrom rejected accusations that Sweden was taking sides and said she hoped other EU countries would follow its lead.

More than a decade and 15 million singles sold later, the five times platinum selling artist Jay Sean is a household name, performing sold out shows across the globe and now he's back in the UK. Sean, the UK’s most successful R&B export has announced that he has chosen to part ways with American record label - Cash Money Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. He’s now preparing to release his latest body of work ‘The Mistress II’ independently next month, in line with his long awaited return home to the UK. The departure comes six years after Sean signed to the label, where he released two albums, ‘All or Nothing’, in 2009, featuring the Billboard number 1 and number 9 hits ‘Down’ and ‘Do You Remember’, followed in 2013 with ‘Neon’, which spawned the R&B song ‘Mars’, which went to number 23 on the Rhythmic radio charts. Sean admits that whilst the departure from the USA is amicable, there were artistic differences that lead to his decision: “I had and still maintain a
great relationship with (Cash Money CEOs) Slim and Baby. “They believed in me and my talent and our partnership obviously garnered a lot of pop success. But, it got to the point where I was chasing pop success and 'the smash' when really my heart wasn't in it anymore," he says. "That's not why I got into this game." Moving forward independently, and returning to his true R&B roots, Jay Sean is now set to release his new mixtape, ‘The Mistress II’, with the video to the first single ‘Tears in the Ocean’. For Sean, The Mistress II is a return to his musical roots and the original UK urban R&B vibe that made him an urban legend. Closer in spirit and sound to his earlier albums Me Against Myself and My Own Way, Sean’s new singles Tears In The Ocean, Jameson and All I Wanna Do carry his trademark, instantly recognisable, nostalgic R&B style. For Sean, ‘The Mistress II’ was a labour of love: “This is a passion project for me, it’s the kind of music I love to listen to and make. The mixtape is all original production and the songs are brand new,” comments Sean. “My goal was to create a complete, solid body of work for The Mistress II, it’s definitely not a collection of catchy singles meant to grab your attention in the first five seconds. “I want people to listen to it in its entirety, I’m trying to get back to where people lived with music and let music grow on them and fall in love with a whole album.”
Sean returns to the UK in the first week of November to reconnect with his fans and share this piece of work with them that he knows will have them reminiscing of good times but also give them music to make new memories with. “The UK fans are the ones that took me to the top and have stayed by my side throughout my journey. I wanted to take this opportunity to give a little something back. It feels good to be coming home with a body of music that I am really proud of and know they will love.” Sean still maintains close connections with his home town of Hounslow in west London and whilst in the UK will also be visiting his former high school as well as several universities across the country to participate in a series of master class Q&A sessions with fans and aspiring musicians. Having started his academic career at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith and then moving on to the prestigious Barts and the London School of Medicine, Sean made the brave decision to drop out of his course in Medicine and pursue his then promising career in music full time. The talks will not only reconnect Jay with a fan base he knows and understands well, but also give aspiring artists the opportunity to learn more about Jay's musical journey so far. Tears in the Ocean and the complete mixtape The Mistress II will be available as a free download shortly, more details to follow.

Asian Express gets £100k Tesla
Introducing the Tesla Model S – zero emissions, zero compromises Over the past decade, Tesla Motors have been at the forefront of electric vehicles, developing incredible cars which are helping to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transportation. The latest motor to arrive from the Tesla production line is a car so advanced; it sets the new standard for premium performance. The Tesla Model S has been designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, taking performance to the next level and beyond. Equipped with an 85 kilowatthour battery and high performance drive inverter, Model S accelerates to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds, guaranteed to deliver both unprecedented range and a thrilling driving experience.
With a rigid body structure, nearly 50/50 weight distribution, and a remarkably low centre of gravity, Model S offers the responsiveness and agility expected from the world’s best sports cars whilst still providing the ride quality of a saloon. Every millimetre of Model S is designed to reduce drag. The door handles are no exception. When not in use, the handles retract into the body, streamlining airflow. When a driver approaches the vehicle with the key, the handles slide out and unlatch with a simple touch. Model S is not simply a car designed with the environment in mind, it is also a driver’s car. Behind the wheel, the combination of meticulous noise engineering,
Asian Express Managing Director, Nadim Hanif, got his hands on one of the world’s first Tesla Model S motors last week and gave his review on an ‘incredible vehicle’. To have now had this first-hand experience of the Tesla S, and as a selfconfessed car enthusiast myself, I can honestly say that this is possibly the best car I have ever driven. This particular model is the top of the range, and is priced at £100,000, which may sound expensive, but you basically start saving money from day one. Why do I rate it so highly? It’s quiet, smooth and absolutely seamless, with no gear changing needed. Simply get in and go – it’s like switching your TV on and off. The car drives like no other I have ever been in before, going from 0 -
60mph in just four seconds. Yes, it’s smooth, and its handling is like that of a thorough-bred supercar - the cornering is like a four-wheeldrive whilst the grip is absolutely amazing. I must also confess that the 50/50 weight distribution is almost identical to that of my own personal 2013 BMW M5 and that, for me, is about the best car in the world. I got used to the fact that there was no sound of the engine yet I’m sure the Speedo was telling fibs at times, as all too often 40mph felt like 20mph. As for the looks, they were very much deceiving with some people comparing it to a Maserati and others being left dumbfounded by this
alongside Tesla’s uniquely quiet powertrain, creates the sound dynamics of a recording studio. The touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and steering wheel controls seamlessly integrate media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and vehicle data. From the moment the door opens, the high-resolution Model S 17” touchscreen powers on and returns to its last function. Model S drivers can listen to any song they want with a choice of HD radio, online radio, on-demand internet radio and Bluetooth or USB audio devices. Planning ahead is made easy with Google Maps which offers live traffic information and allows you to visualise the cars energy consumption
instantaneously. When reversing, drivers can see behind the car with the industry’s first full HD backup camera which is optimised for ultimate visibility and safety. The Model S has an unbeaten EV range of up to 312 miles, meaning long distances in an electric vehicles are no longer out of the question. Most customers will charge mainly at home, waking up to a completely recharged battery, giving owners the option to travel for free between cities along well-traveled routes in Europe. Superchargers provide half a charge in as little as 20 minutes and are strategically placed to allow owners to drive from station to station with minimal stops. Travelling with the family or
plenty of luggage is no problem in the Model S. The car comfortably seats five adults and the rear facing seat option provides additional seating for two children. The unique architecture of Model S even creates unprecedented storage space with up to 63 cubic feet of possible storage to be utilized. Whether you are a mountain-biker a surfer or just a big shopper, all your items and more can be safely stored in the vehicle. With sustainable transportation at the heart of everything Tesla produces, the Model S looks set to become the benchmark for other car manufacturers to follow when producing exciting electric motors.
incredible car in front of them. The car rode OS Michelin 255 x R21 tyres and the 21-inch turbine wheels were really eye-catching. Either way it looked slick and stood out from the crowd. It looks better
than the majority of four-door cars that you see on the road, and it could even pass as a coupe model - that's how nice it is. Look inside the Tesla and a massive interactive console is on hand with easy access, leaving all passengers, and admittedly myself, to just sit back and say ‘wow’. It’s basically an iPad fitted in to the cockpit, in fact it’s bigger than an iPad and it’s faster too. The screen had Google maps, full internet access and can be used as a big screen reversing camera. Everything was controlled via this touch screen whether you needed to lock or unlock the doors, or even lower the suspension; you had all the controls right in front of you. The car is also very spacious, similar
to the feel of a Big Range Rover Vogue, with plenty of head room and even more leg room which even the back seat passengers can take advantage of. Over all this 100K motor would save money every day: 1. Free Road Tax. 2. Free Congestion charges 3. £8 or fill up on an overnight charge at home giving you 250 miles 4. Services cost next to nothing The only downside is that you would have to work out the mileage of your trip in advance to see if would get to your destination and back. If not, I suppose you could always call at any service station and charge up whilst having a cup of coffee. Basically, the Tesla S is an incredible motor. Nadim Hanif Asian Express Motors

A whopping huge discount of £18,650 for a BMW 7 Series was made by a mystery research field team. How and why – well that’s because it’s about to be replaced by a newer model, but a target price research reveals that it is just one of several doubledigit discounts achievable on BMWs. As a result, the premium car manufacturer sits third among all car makers for the overall average discount available on its cars. Others significant BMW discounts include a £10,719 saving off a BMW 640d SE, which is available for £52,411 against a list
price of £63,130, and a £2056 saving on a BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics, which can be bought for £26,719 despite a list price of £28,775. The biggest average discounts across a car maker's range are available on Volvos (14.7%), Renaults (13.6%) and BMWs (13.2%). Across all sectors and manufacturers, the average dealer discount stood at a 12-month high of 10.3%. Jim Holder of What Car?, who conducted the reasearch said: “For months now, we’ve been told that the increased new car sales volumes mean that discounts will
disappear, but the insight offered by our Target Price team shows that you can still get a healthy amount of money off if you are prepared to haggle. “BMW is, rightly, perceived as a quality brand, so it may surprise new car buyers that they can bag some of the brand’s most luxurious offerings for much less than the list price. The fact is that the 7 Series is due to be replaced soon, so there are incredible discounts available. Using Target Price means that you can be bold when you step into the dealership because you know what you can demand.”
Discounts of cars in the luxury segment are particularly strong at the moment, with an average saving of 17% off the list price across the sector. This is an increase of 75% on the same time last year and is also largely down to BMW 7 Series discounts jumping from 9% to 29.3% on average. City cars, small family cars and coupés, where demand is stronger, have all experienced a dip in discounting but cars in the small SUV sector, which includes the BMW X1, Peugeot 3008 and Suzuki SX4, can be snapped up for an average of 8.4% less than the list price.

‘Dartz’ Vader When a military grade assault vehicles car boss, namely Leo Yankelovich, said that the Prombon was the "the real spy car of the 21st century", many big boys were heard squeeling in excitement . The Prombron SUV by the eccentric Latvian-based car maker Dartz Motor is becoming a global phenomenon. The “six-zero” price tag means only members of high society have access to the monster vehicle, which have been snapped up previously
by Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to ferry their precious offspring around. Based on a Mercedes-Benz GL, not only is it offered with the option of a modified version of the twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 from the GL63 AMG, or a modified version of the twinturbo 6.0-litre V12 from the GL65 AMG, it comes loaded with luxuries such as a champagne holder and sterling silver handpolished flutes, a golden shisha, Xbox One and PS4,. The Prombron is
armoured to wargrade, but it's in the detail where the car really gets all 007. Such as electrochromatic privacy windows, disappearing doorhandles with an anti-paparazzi shockdevice, a body made from Kevlar and titanium to protect against magnetic mines, and a rotating bulletproof grille. The four-tonne vehicle has bulletproof windows, Bang & Olufsen televisions and sound systems, diamond and ruby encrusted gauges, an exterior coating of reinforcement material and is powered by a Mercedes-Benz AMGsourced V-12 engine. Not enough disgusting excess for your taste? The Prombron was originally released with leather upholstered from the foreskin of whale penises causing mass controversy. Classy.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
ABRARCadabra
‘Magic’ moment from Tetley forward seals crucial win Tetley’s Tino 1 - 0 Super Six One goal was enough to settle this week’s game of the night as a late strike from Tetley’s Tino forward, Hasan Abrar, rounded off an actionpacked contest. Packed full of entertainment from the first whistle, both teams were gifted opportunities yet had their goalkeepers to thank for a string of impressive saves. New boys, Super Six, were looking to bounce back from last week’s humiliating 12-0 defeat against

... rest of the action
Hyde Park 3 - 0 Half a Dozen
Hyde Park took full advantage of dropped points elsewhere to regain top spot at the half way point, as they overcame Half a Dozen by three goals to nil. The league leaders were well in control of the game which saw Kadeem Walker bag a brace and Waleed Akhtar also get his name on the scoresheet. Half a Dozen remain second bottom despite beginning this week’s encounter in a similar fashion to their last outing, looking strong at the back as they attempted to frustrate Hyde Park. The defence was finally breached in the first half when Walker claimed his first goal of the night which was soon doubled by the same player moments later. With the floodgates threatening to open, the favourites dominated the second half and despite an onslaught of possession and chances, only Akhtar was able to add a third goal to the game to send Hyde Park top on goal difference. MOTM: A brace for Kadeem Walker saw the talisman take the individual award this week as his side went top.
NFA 0 - 0 Old Bacca Boys
The game that had been built up as the match of the night failed to provide any goals as NFA slipped to second spot following a goalless draw with Old Bacca Boys. Early chances went the way of the league’s third-placed side as the Bacca Boys came close with a trademark free kick from Nickash Yousef, testing NFA’s keeper, Hasan Bashir. NFA perhaps edged the better opportunities in the first half, with Rippon Ali hitting the post and Muhammed Lulu forcing a fine save from Janu Miah, yet the game stayed level. A similar story in the second half saw both teams adopt a cautious approach to the game and despite a golden chance falling to Kabir Miah, the game was destined to finish 0-0. MOTM: Nikash Yousef’s presence at the back kept the game goalless, whilst he was unfortunate with a speculative free kick.
Samba FC 0 - 1 Borussia Teeth
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Jubodhol
Borussia Teeth, and came close to opening the scoring with a chance falling to Razza Khan. Khan again found himself in the right place later on in the first half yet was unable to convert, whilst Tino’s Hasan Noshi was also testing the keeper in the opposing goals. Second half chances again fell to both teams, yet it was Razza who was left with a look of disbelief once more as a glorious chance went missing as Tino’s shot stopper, Ziad Hussain, produced an amazing save to keep the
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Hyde Park’s Idris Hussain has helped guide his side to the top of the Soccer League at the halfway point and continues to put in strong performances week in, week out. If Hussain and his side can take their form into the second half of the season, Hyde Park will be one of the strong favourites to clinch the title this year.
game goalless. When a team concedes 12 goals in the previous game, nerves are always likely to come into play and deep into the second half, cracks showed in the Super Six defence. A through ball from Malik was picked up by Hasan Abrar who finished off a fine move to earn his side the victory and three points. MOTM - Hasan Noshi had a great game, testing the Super Six keeper on a number of occasions and helping guide his side to a much needed victory.
Haseeb Ahmed’s solitary strike was enough to give Borussia Teeth a narrow win over Samba FC, as he took his personal tally for the season up to 12. Borussia were the better team in the first half with Atif Din and last week’s player of the week Hamza Ismail causing all sorts of problems for the Samba defence. Deep into the first it was Ahmed scoring the only goal of the game with a powerful strike that took a deflection on the way which wrong footed the keeper. Borussia Teeth remain fourth but have moved to within four points of third spot. MOTM: Despite losing, the Samba keeper was a man on form, keeping his side in the game to the final whistle.
Jubodhol 5 - 0 Al Aqs
It was back to winning ways for the league’s rollercoaster side as Jubodhol smashed five past Al Aqs FC to move to fifth in the league table. Two early goals from Hamid Ali proved a big blow to Al Aqs who had conceded six goals in their last two outings without finding a reply. Problems only worsened for the side when Shumell Uddin and Abdul Kalam added to the scoring in the first half before Uddin’s second of the game completed the rout. MOTM: Two goals for Hamid Ali kick-started Jubodhol’s rout.

WILL HISTORY BE MADE OR WILL IT END – SERGEY KOVALEV VS BERNARD HOPKINS By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Following my report in August the time has finally arrived when the ageless Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) enters the boxing ring against tough and talented Russian sensation Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) during the early hours of Sunday Morning (GMT). Looking back at sporting history it has always been the case that the young upcoming will eventually defeat the older reigning champion and then continue to make their own legacy until the same happens to them. I remember the complete boxing mismatch between the then retired Muhammed Ali who made the mistake of making a boxing comeback against the younger champion Larry Holmes. Ali should have never taken the fight against Holmes because Ali was secretly ill and couldn’t even touch his finger to his nose, his speech was slurred and he was sluggish during an examination prior to the bout taking place. Then during the boxing bout Holmes not only won against Ali, he destroyed him and that probably contributed to his medical problems today. There are many boxing experts who think that at a grand old age of almost 50 years old; Hopkins is taking a big risk to his health and wellbeing by taking on a boxing bout against the younger 31

year old Kovalev. I personally would not like to see Hopkins badly hurt in the boxing ring like Ali was against Holmes and witness another boxing tragedy where Hopkins’ health in the future has to suffer and I truly believe that Kovalev is capable of doing just that. I remember last summer in Cardiff when Kovalev won against the Welsh WBO World Champion Nathan Cleverly and not only did he knockout and obliterate Cleverly he made him realise his limitation as a light heavyweight boxer that forced Cleverly to move up to the cruiserweight division. Kovalev who is known as “Krusher” has since KO’ed three other willing contenders and according to them shocked them with his power and forced them to the boxing canvas. Hopkins has recently beaten great champions like Tavoris Cloud, Karo Murat and Beibut Shumenov but none of them boxers in my opinion are in the same league as Kovalev who is a new breed of boxing fighter. Kovalev is in the same league of fighters like Gennedy Golovkin who is knocking everyone out at middleweight and another upcoming Russian light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev. Kovalev is an exceptional fighter who has a tremendous amount of knockout power, boxing skills and in boxing terms is a “well-schooled fighter” with a good amateur boxing pedigree. Hopkins’ response to the question of his age and the bout against Kovalev is "I understand humans have a timeline of when they are supposed to go. Age 35 and you're done [as an athlete]. I don't care what sport you're in. It's a fact. I don't know what type of evidence I need to show I'm an alien other than what is there." We hope Bernard “Alien” Hopkins wins against Kovalev and re-writes boxing history again, however unlikely that may seem.
More than one-thousand runners, joggers and walkers headed to the streets of Bradford last weekend as the City Runs made a welcome return. With over twice the number of participants taking on either the kid’s fun-run, 5k, 10k or halfmarathon distances, 1,104 people eventually completed the course, starting at Godwin Street and ending in City Park. All ages were represented in the contests which helped to raise thousands of pounds for a number of worthy causes. Mark Hetherington has been the race director for the past two years and was thrilled to see the event grow so profoundly.
“Sunday was a really exciting day with lots of runners and spectators coming out to show their support,” he said. “This is the second year I have been involved with the race and it has only gotten better. This time we had more than double the number of runners than in 2013 making it even more of a success.” READY SET GO: Running shoes were dusted off Looking forward to next year’s event he added: “I’d last weekend as the City Runs returned to Bradford love to be involved next year if there is the possibility and Frank Beresford, from the Otley and women’s 10k events. 34-year-old Matthew Nowell, continue working to make the Athletic Club, whilst club-mate, race bigger and more successful Tom Midgeley, and Stainland from the Saltaire Striders, and Lions Running Club Victoria Ryan, 36, were than ever.” The winner of the half- representative, Mags Beever, triumphant in the 5k’s. marathon event was 24-year-old were the winners of the men’s
Advani ‘breaks’ Hall’s heart
India's most celebrated cueist, Pankaj Advani, clinched the World Billiards Championship’s time format title earlier this week to complete a rare 'Grand Double' this year. Bangalore's 'Golden Boy' set the green baize on fire as he humbled England's rising star Robert Hall 1928893 in a one-sided contest to hand his mother, Kajal, a perfect birthday gift. He had won the 150-up format last week after defeating Peter Gilchrist and entered the Leeds-based tournament on a high. Hall, who had got past Advani's citymate, Balachandra Bhaskar, in the semi-finals, could not stand up to the Indian ace and the Englishman's maiden final appearance ended on a disappointing note. But it was all smiles for Advani, whose third grand double makes him the only billiards player to achieve this feat. Advani, 29, surpassed Mike Russell, who had won the double in 2010 and 2011. When asked about the multiple records, a thrilled Advani said: “I don't know what to say. The way I feel makes words seem incapable of truly depicting it. I worked really hard on my game and fitness, both physical and mental before coming here (to Leeds) and it definitely paid off. “I'm on my way to Sheffield today to get billiards out of my system and switch to snooker in order to prepare for the IBSF World Snooker Championship happening next month in Bengaluru.” He added: “This win is truly special. Apart from the dozen world titles and the third grand double, the main reason for it being so special is because it was won on my mother's birthday. “She is my rock. Happy birthday Mum. Hope you like your present.”

Fighting for Gaza
It was double delight for brothers Huzayfa and Ayub Khan last weekend as both boxers picked up convincing victories in South Yorkshire. Huzayfa’s three round victory over Jake Exley was a dominant performance from the first bell to the last, with Khan outclassing his opponent. A unanimous point’s decision was awarded in favour of the KBW boxer who made it back-toback wins against Exley,

BOXER: Ali proudly holds his latest accolade, his gold European medal, after defeating the Bulgarian, Daniel Asenov, in the final
“We wanted to do something to help the innocent Palestinians affected by the conflict in Gaza and as we regularly host these events, we decided to dedicate one purely to raising funds for Gaza,” he said.
Back page continued Ali advanced into the quarter-finals and once again showed his ability against one of Europe’s top flyweight prospects, defeating the highlyrated Russian, Levan Khasaia, on a unanimous point’s decision. Victory ensured the teenager would complete his treble of taking medals at the world’s top tournaments, advancing into the semi-finals to face off with Nandor Csoka. With the very real possibility of taking home gold just two wins away, Ali produced a masterclass performance to produce a stoppage victory over the Hungarian. “I got a hard draw throughout the tournament if I’m honest but I was confident going into it,” Ali said. “I was so determined to win gold this time because I had been made to settle for bronze and silver previously and come so close. When the final came around I knew what I had to do.” Ali’s final encounter in the tournament saw him come up against Bulgaria’s EUBC European Junior Continental Champion Daniel Asenov. Effectively taking full advantage of his longer reach, Ali was able to keep his opponent at a safe distance throughout the bout and was awarded his first Gold of the year after a closely contested point’s decision. “When I won in the final I

was just really happy because I had won Gold and completed the treble,” he said. “This one perhaps means even more to me, compared to the Olympics and World Championships because I won the top prize. I’d been working hard all the way up to the competition and it was great to win gold.” Paul Porter, Bradford Boxing Development Officer added: “Mo is a world class boxer, and his incredible achievements over the past six months, culminating in winning gold in Zagreb, put him top in Europe and in the top two at his age and weight in the world. “He is a hard working student, balancing successful studies with the commitment required to train and compete at elite level.” He added: “The support he has received from Bradford College staff over the past two years on the BTEC Level 3 Sport course, and that he continues to receive as a newly enrolled degree student studying Sports Coaching, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to young athletes' futures, both in competitive sport and in employment within the Sports industry. “Mo joins the ranks of Bradford College boxers who have succeeded at Commonwealth, European and World level after winning everything available to them at national level. We are tremendously proud of him and look forward to further success in the future.”

Competing in Scunthorpe, the heavy hitter proved too strong for his competitor and returned to Dewsbury with his reputation thoroughly enhanced. Both boxers got KBW off to a good start for the 2014/15 boxing season and both are matched to fight at the Dewsbury

Keighley’s rising star in the world of boxing, Muhammad Ali, rounded off an amazing 2014 as he clinched gold at the European Youth Championships last weekend. Competing in Zagreb, the 18-year-old’s latest accolade accompanies his bronze and silver medals, picked up at the Youth Olympics and World Youth Championships respectively, earlier this year. After initially getting a bye in the round of 32, Ali’s first opponent was the Ukrainian Mykyta Charuta. A dominant display from the Bradford College student saw his opponent given four standing counts before the referee finally decided it was time to call a halt to proceedings.
