Hundreds of runners, joggers and walkers embarked on Leeds’ Roundhay Park last weekend as a special fundraising five-kilometre event returned to the city.

Following on from last year’s success, the Give a Gift 5k was held with the aim of raising vital funds for Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Unit and Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Young and old participants dusted off their running shoes and stretched off their hamstrings to take part in the event, helping to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

As of Monday, more than £2,500 had been donated to the cause with donations still coming in to take the tally even higher.

Habib Khan, Give a Gift Ambassador, said it was a ‘fantastic day’ and thanked all the people who had turned out to support the worthy causes.

“The turnout for the weekend was fantastic and there was such a diverse range of participants which was really good to see,” he said.

“Continuing from last year’s event, the run is a fantastic was of raising funds for the Give a Gift project and a big thank you goes out to all those who got involved on Sunday.”

Other than the fivekilometre challenge, there were also obstacles on the day for event organisers who had to cope with a double booking of the park which was taken in good spirits.

Mr Khan added: “The dilemma on the day was that the people in charge had actually also allowed a triathlon to be booked in for the same time.

“It all worked out fine in the end and nobody was having to dodge anyone which is always a positive thing.”

Running on the day with his family was businessman Abid Hussain, who was thrilled to see the event return for a second year.

“It really was a brilliant day,” he said. “It was lovely to see people coming down to support the charities and we all had lots of fun.”

Asian Express Newspaper was the proud media partner of the event, whilst Prime Health and Blackstone were the lead sponsors.

Speaking on behalf of the latter, Blackstone director, Bilkis Mahmood, said the day was both fun and rewarding.

“We wanted to do something which would help a fantastic cause such as Martin House and by getting involved with Give a Gift we hopefully did just that.”

Works on a new councils housing area in Leeds finally got underway earlier this week, with the developments warmly welcomed by local residents and councillors.

The site, on East Park Road, Burmantofts, will upon completion see a total of 32 new one and two bedroom homes built on the site.

Meeting the Leeds Standard for Housing - intended to ensure high quality design, space standards and energy efficiency - the homes will allow greater access to quality living for Leeds’ population.

Burmantofts and Richmond Hill ward members welcomed the start of the work, donning their own HiVis jackets and hard hats to mark the occasion.

Ward members have played an active part in making sure the site is designed with local needs in mind and Councillor Asghar Khan, for Labour, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill, said this was at the heart of the designs.

“High quality one and two bedroom accommodation is much needed in our area,” he said. “I am really glad that the Council has listened to ward members to provide these new homes.

“I speak to many people who need housing, especially those who have grown up in the local area.

This work shows our commitment to bringing absolutely first rate Council housing to the area.”

TEAM: Collections have been held in supermarkets with youths and fellow AMYA members to help a host of British charities

A selfless volunteer from Sheffield has been shortlisted to appear at one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the country, targeted at commending many of society’s unsung heroes.

Shahzad Athar, of Page Hall, has been nominated to appear at the annual Pride of Britain awards later this year, due to his fundraising efforts across South Yorkshire.

The 34-year-old dedicates more than six hours every day to his charity work, which revolves around his role as a youth leader for the city’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA).

Since moving to Sheffield from Pakistan in 2009, the volunteer has been working with youths, aged between seven and 15-year-old, as well as adults.

Upon hearing of his nomination by colleague, Tariq Ahmad Tahir, Shahzad says he was ‘surprised’ and ‘humbled’ yet insists he is only doing what his religion teaches.

“As a Muslim, I don’t feel like I have actually done anything that special to be nominated for this award but rather I was just following my faith,” he said.

“In Islam you are taught to ‘love God and love his creation’ and by doing this work with AMYA we hope to achieve that.”

He added: “It did come as a surprise to hear that I had been shortlisted and I was very humbled.

“The Pride of Britain awards is a very big ceremony so it was obviously very nice to be shortlisted alongside some fantastic people.”

Last year, South Yorkshire’s AMYA wing raised almost £15,000 for different British charities, ranging from the British Red Cross, to MacMillan Cancer Research and the Poppy Appeal.

Homeless feedings are also held every month by the team who commit their own time to the cause of ‘helping humanity’.

“That is at the heart of our religion,” Shahzad added. “Everything we do is aimed at helping to serve humanity and we need to act upon this.

“We integrate our youth by working with different communities through various activities such as fundraising or tree planting and this helps to promote community cohesion and remove misunderstandings which others may have.”

Shahzad’s nomination was also welcomed by regional co-ordinator, Kamal Aftab who praised his ‘humble’ colleague.

“I have known Shahzad for around three years now and I can say he is a genuinely humble person and has a very warm-heart,” he said.

“He is 100 per cent committed to helping others and doing the best for communities so I really couldn’t have wished for a better person to have been shortlisted for the award.”

Kamal added that his friend has also shown, on a number of occasions in the past, that it isn’t only time which he is willing to give up but also his own money, regularly helping fund the food projects.

Park and ride

Planning permission has been granted for the city’s second park and ride site to date.

The 1000-space car park and transport interchange hub will be located within the Leeds City Region Enterprise Zone and play an integral part in the zone’s development and investment.

The new facility at Temple Green Road will be easily accessed from the M1 Junction 45 via East Leeds Link and Bell Wood roundabout.

The plans, submitted jointly by Leeds City Council and Temple Green site developers Aire Valley Land (a partnership between Evans Property Group and Keyland Developments) include an area for bus drop-off and pick-up with associated passenger shelters, terminal building and cycle storage facilities.

Illegal car parks in Leeds are being clamped down on as Leeds City Council takes action on firms who have failed to make the sites they use safe and secure.

Following a decision in March 2012, which saw the council approve 12 temporary long stay commuter car parks on cleared private land, firms running a number of car parks were given planning permission on the basis that a variety of improvements would be made such as landscaping, surfacing, clearly marked spaces, security lighting and signage.

Despite repeated written reminders from the council, West Register - who ran various car parks on Globe Road - failed to implement environmental improvements.

Although given over 18 months to complete the environmental improvements, including the Planning Inspector giving six months’ notice following an enforcement appeal, they still failed to do so.

The Great Poppadom Challenge saw dozens of diners embark on a one-minute ‘all you can eat’ binge of the tasty treats aiming to break the record for the most poppadoms eaten in one place.

From school teachers and pupils, to businesses and just some more than willing guests, the record was broken with 141

consumed in the allocated time frame.

Held as part of Bradford’s 2014 Curry Capital bid, the event was a big success following on from the poppadom marathon earlier this month.

Azhar Mahmood, of Team Aakash, oversaw the challenge and was delighted to see so many people get involved.

“It was a great event and the turnout was good,” he said.

“It was a lot more challenging than people had thought but it was still great fun for everyone. To have so many different people all participating under one roof was really nice to see.”

He added: “I think 141 was a

good result as well. It is a new record and we now leave an open door for other restaurants to try and beat that record and next year we can try for even more.”

Aakash is one of the four chosen restaurants to represent Bradford in this year’s Curry Capital bid, alongside fellow eateries, Kiplings, Shimla Spice and Zaara’s.

Mohammed Rafiq, of Kiplings, was on hand to support the event on Monday evening, adding that as well as proving to be a big and exciting challenge, the event also importantly raised money for charity.

Speaking of this year’s Curry Capital bid, he said: “What we, as

the four restaurants in Bradford, are doing is trying to work as one as shown by my attendance here.

“This event hasn’t been heavily publicised and to see so many people come down, on their days off to help host the event, has been great to see.

“By raising money for The Curry Tree charity as well it shows that Bradford is not just about good food but also about raising funds for good causes.”

Future Leader Young Muslim Leeds woman returns from ‘amazing programme’

A community champion from Leeds says she is more determined than ever to help improve her local area, after returning home from a prestigious programme in Oxford.

27-year-old Salma Arif, from Harehills, met with esteemed politicians, discussed challenges facing Muslims in society and even dined at Buckingham Palace during the two week residential earlier this month.

As part of the Young Muslim Leadership Programme, Salma was selected as just one of 25 individuals, aged between 20 and 29 from across the country, to take part in the programme at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

In cooperation with the Prince's Charities, and with the support of the Amanah Foundation, ISESCO and Barclays, the group were selected to discuss the role of Muslims in society in relation to education, employment, housing and foreign policy.

For Salma, as an aspiring politician herself and the chair of the local labour branch for Harehills and Gipton, it was an experience she will never forget.

“When I first got the email telling me that I had been accepted onto the course I was extremely happy because I knew how prestigious the programme was,” she said.

“Overall, it was an amazing trip and one which I have come away from only wanting to get more involved with my local community.

“There are Muslims in Britain who are working hard, who are qualified and successful and it is now time for these people to come to the forefront.

“I want to go out there, work hard, work with society and encourage lots of young Muslims to get involved with helping to change perceptions for the good.”

She continued: “One guest speaker was CEO of Fajr Capital, Iqbal Khan, and he said something that really has stayed with me – ‘Be better than you were yesterday’.

This is something I am more determined than ever to now accomplish.”

Other speakers during the fortnight included Members of Parliament, senior civil servants and academics, as well as representatives of the media and community organisations.

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi was one guest who left a lasting impression on Salma who said it was a real honour to dine alongside the Dewsbury-born politician.

“She was a really inspiring person to speak with,” Salma said, “and it was nice to have someone there from Yorkshire as ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

RELIGION: The two-week residential saw Muslims come together to address issues facing members of their faith in today’s society, here the group pray together

well.

“I was sat next to her at dinner and she gave me some fantastic advice and tips about how to go about a career in politics.

One particularly inspiring thing she said was ‘if not me then who, and if not now then when’.”

As well as group meetings and interactive lectures, the group of 25 were also given the chance to visit some prominent places both inside and outside of the grounds.

From the grand dining halls, made more famous for their appearance in the Harry Potter movies, to the Houses of Parliament, the experience was a unique one.

At Buckingham Palace, the young group were escorted to one of the most famous areas for dinner.

“We were taken upstairs and went to the balcony room where Kate and Will came out after their marriage,” Salma explained.

“To think of how important this room has been and the people who have been in there was amazing. We were literally just feet away from the famous balcony.”

She added: “After dinner we were then taken to a private area to pray. It was quite surreal to be honest.

“We had come to Buckingham Palace and not only been accepted but also given a separate space to go and pray.

“It was a beautiful moment and one that will stay with me for a long, long time.”

Now back in Leeds, Salma is hoping to continue her career in politics and promote community activism amongst young Muslims across the city.

TRAGIC TRIBUTES: Flowers, letters and soft toys have been placed at the site in memory of the teenager

15-year-old killed in horrific car crash

A teenager from Bradford ashley@asianexpress.co.uk was tragically killed last week after the car he was travelling in collided with a wall and telegraph pole in Bradford.

Saliq Amjad Malik was taken to Leeds General Infirmary after the collision on Giplin Street, Barkerend, but sadly died of his injuries later in the same day.

The Hanson Academy pupil had been a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf when it ploughed into a wall on Friday 12th September.

A 17-year-old boy, believed to be the driver, was arrested by police earlier this week on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving whilst another 15-yearold remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Tributes have been left at the site of the crash throughout the past week with flowers, soft toys and notes of condolences placed by the fallen telegraph pole.

One message read: “Can’t actually believe what has happened. I’m gonna miss

you so much you were like one of my big brothers.

“I will never forget you and all the memories, you never failed to put a smile on my face.”

Local councillor, Faisal Khan, of Bradford Moor, added his sympathies for the family.

“Condolences obviously go to the family,” he said. “I have seen his dad and he is obviously devastated about the loss of his son but he must continue with his life.

“No parent wants to see their child go before them so it is a really difficult time for all of Saliq’s relatives.”

Cllr Khan added that the tragic fatality should now also act as a reminder to other youths about the importance of road safety.

“The message I would say to the young people out there driving is to stay safe on the roads and don’t get in the car if you aren’t going to be.”

Meanwhile investigations into the crash are continuing with West Yorkshire Police appealing for the public’s help in identifying the cause of the crash.

PC Andrew McManus, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “A young boy has tragically lost his life as a result of this collision, so I am appealing to the occupants of this purple or maroon Peugeot car or anyone else who might have witnessed the movements of the Golf to contact myself or Sergeant 4756 Quinn at the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”

A police officer from Bradford received one of the country’s highest honours last weekend as he was presented with his British Empire Medal in Bradford.

52-year-old Yasvender Singh Rehill was made aware of his award earlier this year after he was included in the Queen’s Birthday List.

Having committed 27 years of his life to serving the West Yorkshire Police force, PC Rehill was commended for services to policing and community engagement in the city.

On Sunday 14th September the Community Prevent Engagement Officer received his award at the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara on Leeds Road, Bradford, at a special ceremony.

Speaking previously about his commendation, PC Rehill said it had come as a shock to hear his name had been included on the prestigious Birthday List.

He said: “I had no idea at all that I was going to get this honour. It was a big surprise and I am very proud.

“I aim to be a role model within the community and I hope this will promote our work and encourage more people to join the force.”

Currently, PC Rehill works with communities in the BD3 and BD4 areas of Bradford, liaising with different communities and places of worship to communicate with faith leaders and worshippers.

One person who was full of praise for his ‘friend’ was Dave Dufton who recounts one occasion he spoke with the constable about his faith and role in the police.

Explaining the tough decisions made in the role, Mr Dufton said: “His love for, and the need to care for, his family, and support to his colleagues was one side of the scale, the other was to remove the customary and required outward signs of an adult male Sikh.

“The decision was eventually made, and out came the scissors and razor and the physical appearance became the man we know today.

“With all faiths, how one conducts oneself, both at worship and towards humanity in general, is much more important than outward appearances.

“Changes in physical appearance do not change one's beliefs, or relations with other people, or how one worships the supreme, unimaginable being, that we, each in our own mother tongue, call God.” PC Rehill will attend the ‘Royal Presentation’ next year at Buckingham Palace. ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford-based founder of the World Curry Festival announces first destination for the event outside the UK Having just celebrated its fifth anniversary, the World Curry Festival has just signed a deal to be taking the event to Malaysia – its first destination outside Yorkshire.

The Honourable Dato' Haji Abdul Malik Kassim, the Malaysian State Minister for Religious Affairs and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs arrived in Yorkshire this week to sign an agreement with the founder of the World Curry Festival, Zulfi Karim.

The Minister originally met Mr Karim earlier this year, when they got together to discuss the idea of promoting Malaysian food. He was blown away by the World Curry Festival concept, and flew back to the UK this week to do

the deal.

Bradford has been the UK curry capital for four-years running and therefore is befitting that the festival, which operates out of the heart of the city, from the Grade II listed Drummond Mills complex, will be taking British curry to Malaysia.

The festival will be hosted in the state of Penang, on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang, which is often referred to as the "The Pearl of the Orient", is widely regarded as the food capital of Malaysia.

Local businesses and students from Bradford will be travelling to Malaysia to participate in the festival between 30 January and 1 February 2015. It is a fantastic opportunity for Bradford and

Yorkshire alike to showcase its talent to rest of the world.

Commenting on the announcement, Zulfi Karim, Founder of the World Curry Festival, said: "It is an honour to be invited by the Malaysian State Minister to take the World Curry Festival to its first international destination.

“Going global has been part of the plan for a few years now, but we were waiting for the right opportunity, and we feel that this is the one we have been waiting for.

“The food created in the Yorkshire region is fantastic; it has been inspired by recipes and cultures from both eastern and western hemispheres.

“We hope our new relationship

with Malaysia will facilitate further investment into our region from businesses based in Malaysia, and allow us to promote Yorkshire brands in the Far East.

“We also hope to take British curry to Malaysia, while learning from their expertise."

Stripped of British Citizenship Scotland Yard Chief says tougher sanctions may be needed for British extremists Britain’s most senior police officer has backed growing calls to see British extremists, who travel abroad to fight, stripped of their passports.

Metropolitan Police Crime Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said it should be seen as a ‘privilege’ to live in this country and by going to war zones as aspiring terrorists, that privilege should be removed.

Currently, it is estimated that between 500 and 600 Britons are fighting in Syria, with roughly three quarters of them from the capital.

Sir Bernard said earlier this month that Scotland yard is prepared should a large number of them return at the same time, and even called for the return of control orders.

Such a move would see terror suspects forced to move to a different part of the country where they could then be place under a lengthy curfew as they are investigated.

The control orders were replaced in Britain by less restrictive Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, for suspects who can neither be deported nor charged.

Speaking on LBC Radio, Sir Bernard said: “It seems to me it’s a privilege to have a passport and be a citizen of this country, and if you’re going to start fighting in another country on behalf of another state, or against another state, it seems to me that you’ve made a choice about where you want to be. “[The control orders] were stopped because the threat was reduced and quite properly they were seen as too intrusive.

Cigaretteresembling inhaler licensed as medicine in UK A nicotine inhaler which closely resembles a cigarette is the first product of its kind to be licensed as a medicine in the UK. The product, called Voke, which is not electronic, could be provided on prescription to help people stop smoking.

It is also the first device made by a tobacco company to be licensed.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) says this could pave the way for electronic cigarettes to be licensed too.

A number of nicotine inhalers, sprays, patches and gums are already available on prescription as aids for stopping smoking, but this is the first device designed to imitate a cigarette which has been licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).

While e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular with smokers who want to cut down or stop smoking, as yet none of them is licensed as a medicine in the UK. No-one yet knows how safe they are, although there is consensus among medical

experts that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking tobacco.

The new nicotine product does not produce ash or smoke and does not involve heat or combustion.

It does not require a battery and only needs the user to inhale.

The licence means the product can only be promoted to smokers and cannot be sold to children.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of health charity Ash, said she welcomed the decision by the MHRA. "This new alternative to smoking will allow smokers to choose a product which meets the high standards of medicines regulation and could be provided on prescription to help them stop smoking."

A spokesman from the MHRA said it encouraged companies to submit medicines licence applications for electronic cigarettes and other nicotine-containing products.

It is not yet available but could be on sale in a few months' time.

Crime commissioner steps down after weeks of pressure After weeks of deafening calls for his resignation, South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner finally stepped down from his position earlier this week.

Shaun Wright had been in charge of children’s services in Rotherham during the 16-year sex abuse scandal which saw more than 1,400 children, some as young as 11, abducted, raped, beaten and abused.

His position as Police and Crime Commissioner came shortly after, when he was elected to the role.

Reports released last month highlighted the failures by police and the local authority during the 16-years which had already seen council leaders resign.

However, for a number of weeks, Mr Wright clung on to his job in the face of the almost universal criticism, including from British Prime Minister David Cameron and relatives of victims.

He said he had known nothing about the abuse while in his former post, and the prevention of child sexual exploitation had been his number one

The scaffolding around Bradford's City Hall is being used to hang a banner commemorating World War One. The 11-metre high black and white banner, displays the words 'Bradford remembers 100 and commemorates the centenary of World War One, 2014 to 2018, with a silhouette of an ‘unknown soldier’. It has been hung above the main doors to City Hall.

The banner will be displayed on the building for at least a year.

Bradford Council announced in January that it would take part in national commemorations of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 and the armistice of 1918.

The authority's Culture and Tourism department has a programme of exhibitions and activities to give people an insight into life at home and away during the Great War. Details can be found at the council’s website.

Rewarding the future

Five new apprentices have been taken on by Bradford Council so they can get a good four-year grounding in their chosen trade.

The new starters have been invited to the Building and Technical Services Apprentice of the Year awards which will take place in City Hall on Thursday September 25.

Awards will be made to apprentices in four categories namely Best Portfolio; Most Improved; Outstanding Effort and Trainers Choice - the latter being new this year. The overall winner of the Apprentice of the Year will be chosen from 16 finalists in those categories.

Last month's report said huge numbers of children, mainly white girls in social care homes, were sexually abused by gangs of predominantly Asian men and that some were trafficked to other cities across northern England to be gang-raped.

It found children had been threatened with guns, made to witness rapes and even doused in petrol and warned they would be set alight.

MP’s life threatened during rally Bradford’s Respect MP, George Galloway, claims he was told he was ‘going to face a bullet’ earlier this week after attending a prounion event in Scotland.

The controversial politician had been invited to speak on behalf of pro-union campaigners who were hoping to see the country vote ‘no’ to a split from the UK, something which was eventually confirmed on Friday morning.

During the rally on Monday in Glasgow, Mr Galloway was heckled by anti-union supporters with some protestors being escorted from the premises.

The local MP told the crowd of the threat during his speech, which came just days after being attacked in London.

“In the last 30 minutes I have been told I am going to face a bullet,” he said.

“I take these matters seriously because I am on painkilling drugs and a walking stick when I am not on stage following an attack in London.”

Earlier this month, Mr Galloway was physically assaulted as he posed for pictures in the capital. A picture was shortly after uploaded onto social media showing the injuries suffered, which included severe

bruising to the body and head.

39-year-old Neil Masterson, of Campden Hill, Kensington, admitted the assault but denied his attack was religiously aggravated.

It had been claimed that Masterson shouted about the holocaust during the attack, following on from the MP’s comments of Bradford whereby he labelled the city an ‘Anti-Israeli zone’.

Masterson also admitted to the assault of another man, Mostafa Maroof, and appeared at Isleworth Court earlier this week. He was remanded in custody and will stand trial on 10th November.

Carlton Bolling College students protest against school mentor’s suspension DEMO: Hundreds of students turned out to protest outside CBC in row over staff member's suspension

A Bradford secondary school has come under criticisim after the Head Teacher “warned” his students that they risk being arrested if they partook in a demonstration, which took place after school hours, about a staff member’s suspension.

Mr Asif Khan, a longstanding mentor for Carlton Bolling College (CBC) students received a letter during the school summer holidays informing that he was suspended due to gross misconduct.

Though Mr Khan has been ordered to not disclose the details of the disciplinary action being taken against him, it’s been speculated that his suspension and investigation is due to his pro-Palestinian support on his social media networking platforms.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Undercliffe school on Wednesday 10th September, for a second rally organised to raise their objection on Mr Khan facing disciplinary action by the school.

The demonstration, which included uniformed students and some adults, went along peacefully, with many praising the students for maintaining order. Police had flocked the area to oversee the rally.

The school will now be questioned as to why Mr Khan’s job was advertised prior to their investigation or first meeting with Mr Khan, where he would have the opportunity to fight his corner.

I feel that students of CBC have just displaying their views in a manner which they thought would be the most effective in getting the maximum attention of the governing body of the establishment. They feel a sense of injustice over his suspension over his pro-Palestinian support. I’m sure the relevant internal HR procedures are being pursued by Asif Khan, and that all will become clear soon.

SupportMan to help tackle painful knees during prayer

Ten years ago, a Muslim doctor operating out of Bradford suffered a serious knee injury meaning he could no longer pray without feeling pain.

After ‘putting up’ with the condition for a couple of years, Dr Sulleman Moreea decided it was time to do something to combat his issue and so the ‘SupportMan’ was created.

A piece of soft, lightweight foam which is put underneath a person during prayer, the device helps alleviate the pressure from a person’s knees

during prayer rituals.

Developed by Dr Moreea and a professional foam maker in Mauritius, the product has enabled the Leeds resident to pray comfortably for the past four years.

Dr Moreea explained: “It all stemmed from an injury I got whilst playing football, when I got a cruciate ligament tear and needed two screws in my left knee.

“Thereafter I damaged cartilage in my right knee and required further operations, which ultimately meant that it was very painful for me during prayer.

“Islam allows for people to use a

chair in the mosque but I felt I was a bit too young for that and I still wanted to pray normally.

“The SupportMan has allowed me to pray on my knees again without pain.”

The doctor, and Micha Sayed, owner of the foam factory Plyfoam, are now sharing the invention with mosques across Bradford in hope of helping more people find comfort during their prayers.

With its lightweight material making it easily transportable and its durable surface meaning it will never need replacing, the device is ideal for all ages.

“A little while back I was speaking with my friend who developed the device and he said

‘you’ve found benefit from this, why not share it with others?’” Dr Moreea added.

“So now we are taking these SupportMan products into mosques across the city and dropping them off in hope of helping more people, like me, who struggle with praying on the floor.”

Mr Sayed whose factory runs in Mauritius, and was the key designer behind the SupportMan. He explained further why it was important to ensure the device is able to be used by all Muslims.

“My friend, Dr Moreea, came to me with his problem and said he needed a product which could help take the pressure away from

his knees,” he said.

“From there we went through some design ideas and soon had an initial prototype which did the job just fine.

“But, as time went by, we decided that it needed to have other properties which would make it suitable for everybody.

The devices have so far been delivered to Bradford’s Osmania mosque, Quba mosque and Abu Bakar mosque.

DRENCHED: Principal Nav Chohan took on the ice bucket challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Motor Neurone Disease

College principals may often be thought of as having ice running through their veins and that idea has never been truer than with Shipley College’s very own Nav Chohan.

The principal was the latest person to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge after receiving two nominations; one from colleague and eLearning manager, Tara Durham, and one from a friend.

As principal of Shipley College, the head accepted the challenge and received his soaking earlier this week, as can be seen by his video which has already proven very popular.

The protocol of the challenge is that participants are videoed nominating three other people before getting a soaking, usually by a bucket of iced water being tipped over their head.

The challenge participant also states the

charity or charities they have made a donation to.

To the delight of onlookers, Mr Chohan was drenched in ice cold water on site at the college during Freshers Fair.

He named Macmillan Cancer Support in his video taken on 10th September, and later when the video was uploaded on social media he added the charity Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to one of the charities should text ICED55 £5 (or other amount) to 70070 to donate to MND association or ICE to 70550 to donate £3 to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Bradford considered Britain’s most dangerous city Of Britain's ten most populous cities Bradford is seen as the most dangerous – and Edinburgh is thought of as the safest.

New YouGov research asks British people how safe or unsafe they think Britain’s ten most populous cities are, and in all but two cases they tend to find them safe.

Bradford is perhaps best remembered to outsiders for 2001’s race riots, lasting three days and leading to hundreds of arrests. It is the only city mentioned in the poll where more people (42%) say it is unsafe than safe (35%). Britain's second most dangerous city according to the public is Birmingham: people are divided 41-41% on its safety.

Edinburgh, well known for the world’s largest arts festival, The Fringe, is considered the safest place in Britain, with 68% saying it is safe and only 14% saying it is unsafe.

Bristol and Sheffield are also seen as safe by fairly large margins: 57-19% and 50-25% respectively.

London is actually considered safe by the

majority of British people (53%), and Londoners themselves are particularly assured of its safety (75%). However a significant minority (39%) do see it as unsafe, giving it its ranking at sixth place.

In 2012 there were 1.67 homicides per 100,000 people in London, and 2.7 in Glasgow, compared to a UK-wide rate of 1.

In 2010, the use of “stop and search” was almost four times higher in Scotland than in England and Wales.

Although Glasgow is notoriously impoverished, and it does not have the same appeal in terms of safety as Edinburgh, contrary to its crime statistics in perception it does not fare the worst. 44% see it as safe compared to 38% who see it as unsafe.

In this light British cities look dangerous, but the UK has steadily become more peaceful. UK homicides per 100,000 have fallen from 1.99 in 2003; in Glasgow, homicide rates are down 40%.

Kirklees has landed a million Euro prize for an innovative idea to help communities get the most from shared assets.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has today announced the winners in its 2014 Mayors Challenge, an ideas competition that encourages cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life – and that have the potential to spread to other cities.

And Kirklees was the only UK area to win one of the prizes on offer for schemes that could make the most difference.

Barcelona won the 5 million Euro prize, but Kirklees was granted 1 million alongside other bids from Athens, Stockholm, and Warsaw.

Councillor David Sheard, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “The Mayor’s challenge has encouraged us to look creatively at how we use resources, resulting in this winning project.”

It wasn’t prayers and hymns which were seen at a Bradford church last week but rather bows and arrows as a special archery fundraiser event took place at the historic site.

Members from the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) engaged in the age-old sport at St Mary’s Magdalene Church in Manningham, raising funds for Syrian refugees.

In total £300 was raised through the activities with a host of first-time archers showing their sharp eye in front of the targets.

Nazim Ali, general secretary of NADA, said the day was a big success in helping to raise vital funds for those most in need and thanked

“We wanted to arrange fun team-building sessions and came across archery since it was one of the three sports alongside swimming and horse riding that was highly recommended

“We thought alongside having fun we should raise vital funds for Syrian Refugees so that it is a virtuous win-win initiative.

“Archery instils transferable skills that can be applied to our everyday lives for example, concentration, patience, dedication, practice, having goals in lives and constantly striving to achieve them and so forth.”

He added: “We are grateful to Sharat

Hussain for all his wonderful support, hospitality and giving us access to the iconic 1887 St Mary's Magdalene Church.”

Next month members from NADA will be putting the funds to use as they travel to the Turkish province of Hatay to deliver aid to Syrian refugees.

Earlier this year, ‘Team NADA’ members raised over £5,000 for orphans in south Asia and for the Minarets Project by running the Bradford 10K Run and the Keighley Big 10K Run’s in March 2014.

The money was then delivered in person to orphanages in Azad Kashmir in April 2014.

A dramatic shake-up of Labour party councillors, including a former Lord Mayor, has sent shockwaves across Bradford.

The Labour party regional office informed the councillors, three of them who sit on the front-bench at Bradford council, that the party does not want them to defend their seats in next year’s local elections.

The three councillors who have been confirmed to be “deselected” via email, are Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq (Bradford Moor) - also a former Lord Mayor, Cllr Amir Hussain (Toller) – who sits on the Council's powerful executive and

Cllr Rizwan Malik (Heaton).

Sources speculate that the Labour party is trying to teach Bradford “a lesson” after the upset caused by George Galloway’s victory in 2012 byelection.

Speaking to the Asian Express, Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq said: “I was informed via email of the party’s decision to drop me.

“After serving the party for 30odd-years and winning my seat for seven consecutive elections, the one-liner email seemed a bit harsh.

“I have had a good run. During my time as Lord Mayor for the city, I thoroughly enjoyed working

to help many local charities and initiatives in the process.

“However, it’s still a shock for me to be ousted this way.”

All three councillors are seemingly being pulled up on old matters, which had previously been “put-to-bed” following rigorous investigations conducted by the Labour party.

Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq has been pulled up on his 2011 drink driving offence, where Cllr Amir Hussain on a 20-year-old photograph which surfaced in 2012 and seemed to show him holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Cllr Riz Malik, who has a

significant social media following and is considered a stalwart for raising awareness and funds for deprived orphans across the globe, it seems, is facing a case of “double jeopardy”.

He had previously been scrupulously examined and reexamined over an incident in 2010 involving his family’s property business in which it received a fine. As a result, he resigned from chairing Bradford Council's housing and non-domestic rates appeal panel, but stayed on as a councillor.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that three more Labour councillors would also be

removed from next year’s runnings. These were Cllr Kaneez Akthar (Keighley Central), Cllr Asama Javed (Manningham) and Councillor Doreen Lee (Keighley East).

A Yorkshire and Humber Labour Party spokesperson said: “The ongoing selection process for council candidates in Bradford is an internal Party matter and it would not be appropriate for us to provide a running commentary on it at this early stage.”

Council and Labour group leader, Councillor David Green, declined to comment saying that it was a matter for the regional office.

Traditional Asian gift-giving practices examined

The South Asian British Muslim community is being invited to share its stories to help influence new ways of building links between ethnic minority groups.

A Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) team is exploring the inter-generational differences of British Muslims with a Pakistani, Indian or Bengali background through traditional gift-giving practices.

Researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the differences through the years to provide insights into whether any changes in cultural traditions and behaviour are taking place.

Results from the project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, could then help develop community engagement strategies through greater understanding of ethnic minority groups.

Lead researcher Dr Amna Khan, senior lecturer at MMU’s Business School, said: “Many people

in the community felt that post-9/11, Muslims had received a lot of negative publicity.

“There was limited information which acknowledged the contribution they made to communities and society in general. So a project, which explored how they gave gifts to people within their community and outside their community, was developed.

“Britain is a multicultural society with many different ethnic groups and cultures. To make a society work together it is important to understand the diverse cultures and behaviours.

“This study is important as it gives insights how communities can work together through the act of gift giving.”

The team will conduct 90 oral interviews in community centres around the North West and build links with residents. They are also appealing for more members of the South Asian British Muslim community to be interviewed.

The interviews will be stored in the North West Sound Archive.

Transcripts and some copies will be housed in Manchester’s Central Library. The story-book will be displayed in the community centres involved in the project.

More time needed

Migration to Britain from countries joining the European Union should be restricted, the deputy prime minister urged Monday, entering a touchstone debate on immigration and Europe nine months from a general election.

Currently, new members of the EU can wait up to seven years before their citizens gain the right to live and work in other nations in the bloc.

But Nick Clegg, who leads the Liberal Democrats, junior partner in Britain's coalition government, is to propose an extension to this due to economic differences between countries, according to a released copy of a speech to be given later on Monday.

Additionally, countries like Britain should also have the right to curb admissions if

too many migrants arrive once the time limit is over, the deputy prime minister will say.

"It is only right — and I say this as a pro-European — that we reform freedom of movement to reflect these realities," Clegg says in his speech.

Wonderful Ward Young people bring ‘arty touch’ to hospital

Youths in Bradford are helping to brighten up the lives of young patients at one of the city’s hospitals by bringing a touch of creativity to a children’s ward.

The Children’s Ward Two at Bradford Royal Infirmary is at the centre of the project looking to engage patients with interactive design which will be seen by thousands of visitors every year.

The sessions are co-ordinated by artist Stella Corrall and funded by Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity, with the aim of improving the environment of the unit‘s waiting area and post-surgery

lounge area.

Art work will be displayed and help bring a touch of imagination to the premises with many design ideas coming from the children themselves.

Head of Nursing Services for Children, Aileen Sharp, praised the young people spearheading the initiative for a fantastic cause.

“Research shows that there are numerous health benefits of getting children involved in the arts,” she said.

“We know that by integrating the

creative arts into healthcare, we can reduce the stress experienced by young patients, families and staff, improve clinical outcomes and wellbeing, and enhance the quality of service provision.

“We can also significantly improve the hospital experience for all.

“It’s great to see that young

people are leading on this project as this participation engages our patients and supports their wellbeing and recovery.

“We’re also looking forward to seeing the art brighten up the walls of Ward Two as the work is especially for those children requiring ongoing treatment.”

The arts project is also working

with young people from Healthwatch and Barnardos.

The first arts session involved young patients from the hospital’s day case haematology unit, before, on 5th August, teenagers at Barnardos on Queens Road, Bradford, worked with light, colour and pattern to develop their own art for the ward.

Dumped asbestos ‘endangers’ local kids

A large pile of dangerous waste material, which was dumped on a narrow street in Bradford three months ago, has taken away local children’s ‘right to play’ according to a councillor.

The site, on St Pauls Street, in Manningham, was turned into a dumping ground when a van pulled up, dropped off the asbestos covered material, and never came

back for it.

Now, councillor for Manningham, Ishtiaq Ahmed, says the waste ‘must be moved’ as it is endangering the children.

“As a local councillor my concerns are that this is a major health and safety issue,” he said.

“You have children out here playing on the street, cars driving up and down, all going over the asbestos. This is giving rise to dust particles that are then being breathed in by children which is very dangerous.

“To see this remain here for three months is just wrong. Children have a right to a safe place to play and this is taking that away from them so the local authority must take action.”

The small street is not a popular one for motorists yet there are clear signs of broken materials on the floor as a result of the waste pile.

Children often use the street to play games, whilst small pets can also gather the dust on their fur and take it into homes.

These factors are only causing

more danger to the residents according to Cllr Ahmed who adds that sanctions must be removed to stop dumping in public streets.

“At the moment people have to pay for bulk items to be taken away from their homes, whereas before they had the free bulk waste collection,” he said.

“What we are seeing now is people coming around, saying ‘we’ll take that away for £30’ which initially sounds great because it would cost a lot more to get hold of a skip. The issue is that they pick the

waste up, go two miles down the road and dump it.”

Bradford Council currently requires residents to obtain a permit to use certified waste sites, and despite the ease of use, Cllr Ahmed says it should be more readily available to all.

He added: “We need to get rid of this red tape around the permits to ensure all people have easy access to dumping sites because ultimately, if not, it will just end up on the streets.”

Leeds City Council has approved a 20 per cent rent reduction for traders to compensate for trading conditions during the multi-million pound refurbishment to the market.

The report, which was presented to the council’s executive board on 17th September proposed a 20 per cent rent reduction for traders until September 2015 to compensate for trading conditions during the construction work and also to inject £100,000 into the project, so as to allow for the temporary relocation of Fish and Game Row traders during more extensive works as part of the refurbishment.

In recognition of the trading conditions which will be caused by the detailed construction work included to certain parts of Kirkgate Market it is proposed that as of 1st October 2014 until 30th September 2015, traders that are affected by this work will be offered a rent reduction.

A teenager from Bradford was following in his brother’s footsteps last week as he was named Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet for the upcoming year.

16-year-old Abbas Younis was installed as the new representative at a special ceremony at City Hall, taking over the reins from older sibling, Ummar.

Abbas, from Allerton, will be tasked with accompanying the Lord Mayor on ceremonial duties with reference to the forces, such as Memorial Day and the Trafalgar Parade.

Both teens say they aspire to join the Royal Navy when they have completed their academic qualifications and their father, Tariq Mahmood, says he is delighted to see them progress in the Bradford Sea Cadets.

“We are very proud parents at the moment because of what our boys have accomplished,” he said. “The appointment of Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet is a real honour and extra special because they do come from an Asian family.

“I was a Sea Cadet 20 or so years ago but never joined the forces.

Single and separated parents who have previously received no maintenance from their former partner could start receiving payments for the first time, as reform of the child maintenance system starts to affect existing cases.

As many as 50,000 children may be newly eligible for maintenance, the Government has estimated, as a three-year process of closing all existing Child Support Agency cases gets under way.

Under sweeping reforms of the child maintenance system, the CSA has already stopped taking on new cases, with newlyseparated parents encouraged to make their own family-based arrangements or use the new Child Maintenance Service instead.

Now, in the next phase of the changes, the agency is beginning the process of closing its 800,000-strong historic caseload.

Initially, the DWP is writing to around 150,000 parents with details of when their case is due to close and advice about the next steps they should take.

Although there is no need for anyone to act until they receive a letter, once parents receive notification of their closure date they are urged to consider their options.

The case closure programme is beginning with so-called “nilassessed” cases – those in which, because of the circumstances of the non-resident parent, no maintenance has been due.

Because of this, some parents may feel there is no point in responding to the letter they receive.

But because the parents’ circumstances may have changed since the initial assessment was

made – plus the new statutory child maintenance system is much more robust, using data from the tax authorities – it may be that maintenance becomes payable once a new assessment is carried out. Therefore, all parents are encouraged to act.

Parents whose CSA cases are closed are encouraged instead to make their own family-based arrangements – with £14m ploughed into projects around the country that help parents work together in the interests of their children. If that’s not possible, they can take advantage of support available from the new Child Maintenance Service.

Nine hospital staff have been disciplined over the death of pregnant woman Savita Halappanavar in the Republic of Ireland on 28th October 2012.

In a case where the death of Savita Halappanavar on 28 October 2012, at University Hospital Galway in Ireland, led to nationwide rallies protests, calling for a review of the abortion laws in Ireland. Hundreds attended a vigil in her memory, in the days after her death.

The 31-year-old was 17 weeks' pregnant and miscarrying when she was admitted to the hospital.

She had asked for a termination, but staff refused. Days later, she died as a result of septic shock from an E coli infection.

A review found 21 out of 30 staff had no case to answer over her death.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) said warnings, including written warnings, were issued to some of the nine staff at University College Galway who were disciplined.

Others received training and mentoring.

Last October, a report on her death and related issues found there was a failure to provide the most basic elements of care in her case.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found there were many missed opportunities, that if acted on might have changed the outcome for her.

It said there was a failure to recognise she was developing an infection and to act on her deteriorating condition.

It found that University Hospital Galway did not have effective arrangements to regularly record and monitor her condition and that the management of the delivery of maternity services was not consistent with best practices.

Business news CLOSED: More than 500 stores across the country have stopped trading after the company was forced to enter administration

Phones 4U enter administration Chief Executive warns of ‘less competition, less choice and higher prices’ following store closures housands of jobs across the UK are at risk after major phone retailer, Phones 4U, entered administration earlier this week.

The company, which employs 5,596 individuals and has 550 standalone stores, has stopped operating out of its sites since Monday 15th September whilst administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) searches for a buyer.

It is reported that Vodafone and EE are so far potential buyers for the stores, despite both network providers beingaccused by some of driving the company out of business.

Phones 4U was forced to close its stores after EE's withdrawal, which followed on from Vodafone and earlier moves by O2 and 3. This left the company with no major mobile network on its books, something officials said came as a ‘complete shock’.

new handsets account for around £67m.

In a statement, PwC said: “Our initial focus will be to quickly engage with parties who may be interested in acquiring all or part of the business, and to better understand the financial position and options for the company.

The stores will remain closed while we have these conversations.

“We will also be talking to network operators and suppliers, and trying to access funds to pay for the costs of the business, including wages.

“These conversations will determine whether we can re-open stores and trade, and also if and when we can pay the arrears of wages to employees.

“Our hope is that we will be able to pay all the outstanding wages arrears.”

PwC is expected to sell Phone4U’s profitable insurance business by the end of next week.

Phones 4U chief executive David Kassler expressed his frustrations on Sunday 14th September after hearing of the news.

He said: “Today is a very sad day for our customers and our staff.

“If the mobile network operators decline to supply us, we do not have a business. A good company making profits of over £100 million, employing thousands of decent people has been forced into administration.

“The great service we have provided should have guaranteed a strong future, but unfortunately our network partners have decided otherwise.

“The ultimate result will be less competition, less choice and higher prices for mobile customers in the UK.”

he granting of an injunction is a matter at the discretion of the Court, who will consider whether there is a serious question to be tried; whether damages would be an adequate remedy; the balance of convenience between the parties; and whether the status quo should be maintained. Where the parties to a contract have agreed limits on liability in the event of a breach, that will not necessarily prevent an argument that damages would not be an adequate remedy and that an injunction should nevertheless be granted.

The case of AB –v- CD concerned an Application under the Arbitration Act 1996 for an injunction preventing the termination of a licensing agreement relating to the provision of an internet based service for buying and selling goods.

The licensor had given notice to terminate the agreement and the licensee had made a request for arbitration as they did not accept there was any entitlement to terminate. Further, the licensee would be forced to cease trading as a result of the termination because the licensor was its sole customer and source of income.

The licensee argued that an injunction was required because if it was subsequently decided at the arbitration that the licensor had wrongfully terminated the agreement, then damages would not be an adequate remedy. This was on the basis that the agreement contained an exclusion clause which detailed the damages recoverable in the event of a breach of contract and excluded certain heads of loss in their entirety (most notably a claim for loss of profits).

The licensor argued that the parties had agreed the damages which would be recoverable and if it was held that this was

an inadequate remedy, that would fail to give effect to the parties commercial intentions.

The High Court refused the application for an injunction on the basis that the commercial expectations of the parties as set out in the contract should be upheld. If it had been the parties’ intention that certain heads of damage should not be compensated then that should not be interfered with.

However, the Court of Appeal refused to uphold this “mechanistic” approach which would prevent the victim of a contractual breach from obtaining injunctive relief to enforce compliance with the obligations under a contract.

The Court of Appeal found that a limitation or liquidated damages clause would be upheld, but that this did not constitute an agreed price to permit a party to breach a contract by not performing its contractual obligations. It remains open to the Court to use other remedies, such as an injunction, to compel a party to perform its obligations.

This case highlights the importance of carefully drafted limitation of liability clauses. Parties to a contract should carefully consider any exclusions, particularly those relating to wrongful contract terminations.

It is also important to bear in mind that whilst an exclusion clause can operate to reduce a party’s exposure to a damages claim, this will not prevent the Court from granting an injunction requiring a party to continue to comply with the terms of a contract against its will.

Omar Khan’s Skipton’s hidden gem t might not be your usual Asian restaurant but Omar Khan’s in Skipton was never meant to be.

The restaurant has been open for several years now but it remains one of the hidden gems in the North of England.

We only found it after taking a wrong turn once on the way to Bradford!

This part of England is the gateway to the Lake District and the scenery surrounding the restaurant is quite breath taking.

As we pulled into the restaurant car park, the restaurant itself was a grand building with a holiday looking patio area for dining in the evening summer sun.

We walked into the restaurant to be welcomed by a bright warm, open space which took me straight to the focal point, the bar!

We were led to the Churchill lounge and very grand it was too. Wood panelled walls, chesterfields and images of Winston Churchill on the wall.

Having already ordered, the day before - a slow roasted leg of lamb – this arrived with a platter of biryani rice, decorated with vegetables.

The meat was flavoured with spices to add an extra depth of dish.

We also ordered the chicken tikka masala curry which was accompanied by fluffy naan bread.

The restaurant is quite unique not just for its food but also for the interior building space. It is situated on a canal bank area and almost every single room has its own character.

The outside decking area is something I had not seen before.

What is striking though that this is only a 100 seater restaurant. Rather than try to force as many people in here as possible they have actually attempted to allow the building some breathing space.

It works.

People on barges waved at us as they drifted past. The canal was home to ducks and swans and I must say the scenery is simply stunning and unbelievably tranquil. The other side of the canal was open green fields.

This was more of a day out rather than just another visit to the restaurant. Great food in a great little setting.

After months of debates, arguments and promises, the Scottish people have spoken and the United Kingdom will remain ‘united’ after a ‘No’ vote was revealed on Friday morning.

With the referendum results tallied up from across Scotland’s 32 counties, the final standings showed 2,001,926 votes for ‘No’ compared to 1,617,989 for ‘Yes’.

The high turnout of voters showed the real passion for a say in the future of the country which had threatened to leave the 307-year-old union in favour of independence.

Just 55 per cent of nationals eventually voted ‘No’ throughout Thursday with numbers highlighting a close race, something Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond described as just the start of ‘a journey’.

Mr Salmond said he has accepted the voice of the people and pledged to honour a deal he signed with Prime Minister David Cameron to ‘work constructively in the interests of Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom’.

He said following the results of the vote: “It is important to say that our referendum was an agreed and consented process and Scotland has by a majority decided not, at this stage, to become an independent country.

“I accept that verdict of the people and I call on all of Scotland to follow suit in accepting the democratic verdict of the people of Scotland.”

bring Scotland together, let us not dwell on the distance we have fallen short, let us dwell on the distance we have travelled and have confidence the movement is abroad in Scotland that will take this nation forward and we shall go forward as one nation.”

Mr Cameron, whose own job could have been on the line should the Scots have voted for independence, welcomed the news in the early hours of Friday morning.

Describing the result as ‘the right decision’ he said: “It was right to take - not duck - the big decision.

“The debate has been settled for a generation ... There can be no disputes, no re-runs. We have heard the settled will of the Scottish people.”

The man who called himself ‘Zayn Sheikh’ from Bradford, posted his first video, which has had over 73,000 hits, saying he was horrified to learn that his 6-year-old son was inspired to be a pig after watching the cartoon.

The video titled ‘Dangers of Peppa Pig to Muslim Children’, sees him state: “I go downstairs and I see on the tv the haraamist (most unpure) thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

It was this abominable creature Peppa Pig.” He rants on about how terribly distraught he is because his youngest child had originally wanted to be a doctor when he grew up, and Zayn suggests a suitable alternative cartoon to be created titled ‘Abdullah the Cat’.

He also called for an immediate Facebook campaign called ‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’.

And here’s the cue… no such campaign was ever launched.

‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’ does not exist.

However, many individuals and mainstream tabloids quickly took to slamming Muslims, with one person saying that they’d “love to see all these f*****g Muslims tortured and fed pork”, many took to referring to Muslims as a culprit breed of groomers and jihadists and what not.

Some have launched counter campaigns such as ‘Peppa Pig Against Muslims’.

Whilst many people pointed out that it was blatantly obvious that the video was intended as a joke, several major news sources have mistaken Zayn’s piece of satire as a genuine call for the banning of Peppa Pig. One newspaper even published a picture of Zayn’s “supposed” Facebook page depicting the Kaaba along with a “banned” Peppa Pig. In a second video released by Zayn, he exposes his social experiment, and voices how was

shocked he was at the number of vehement comments posted against Muslims.

Though he says his objective was to expose how deeply racist the British are towards Muslims, he’s also been criticised for misleading and inciting racism himself.

Many have applauded him pointing out how easily people are “fooled” into believing anything they watch or read and don’t spare a second thought for spurring venom.

One posted: “Great Initiative. It is an eye-opener about media. ” Zayn, whose real name is still unknown, says: “This video is obviously a parody. I have NOT made the page ‘Muslims Against Peppa Pig’ or any other Facebook pages of the sort.

“This country’s possible future downfall is one million times more likely be down to the rapid multiplication of the mentally deficient who have failed to spot the satire rather than immigrants who have been unlucky in the accident of birth and have since then decided to move here for better prospects –just like you would in their shoes.”

City looks to retain ‘Curry Crown’ For the past three years there has undoubtedly been only one place in the country which deserves to call itself the Curry Capital of Britain - Bradford.

With an array of restaurants serving up the finest dishes to curry lovers nationwide, the city has earned itself a valued reputation as a dining hot spot.

And now, with the 12th annual Curry Capital competition underway, 20 teams, made up of four restaurants each, will once again compete for the top prize.

Bradford council is already actively promoting the city, but face tough competition from the likes of Leicester, Birmingham, Cardiff, parts of London and even relative newcomer Brighton.

Glasgow, who hold four titles, the same number as Bradford, will be side-lined this year due to their hosting of the Commonwealth Games giving the Yorkshire city a further incentive to win this year.

Peter Grove, organiser of Curry Capital of Britain for National Curry Week in October, said this year’s competition is likely to be the toughest yet.

“The voting public really seem to have the idea of what we are looking for,” he said. “In the past they may have given their vote frivolously, but now they are curry connoisseurs with the

result that the city teams are stronger than ever.

“The possibilities are really open for Bradford to win yet again or a totally unsuspected city to receive the title for 2014.

It is all down to the judges and those valuable public votes.”

Bradford’s team this year is made up of Kipling's, based in Greengates, Shimla Spice and Zaara's, in Shipley, and Cleckheaton’s Aakash.

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skills and culture said she believed the city deserves to make it ‘four in a row’.

“We have held the Curry Capital crown for three years running now,” she said.

“I'd really love us to secure it for a fourth year in a row, but we can only do it if Bradford residents support us and vote for their favourite restaurant. Let’s make it happen.”

Tricia Tillotson, Bradford Council’s Tourism Manager added: “Coming to Bradford for a curry is not only for residents of Bradford, but is also on the ‘to do’ list for many tourists.

“Winning the title again can only help to continue to boost the reputation of Bradford as a place to come for a great curry.”

The winner of this year’s contest will be announced on 20th October.

Landmark dementia study at Bradford Royal Infirmary seeks local people to help with research

The leaders of a £2million landmark study, which aims to improve the care of dementia patients while they recuperate in hospital from a fractured hip, are looking for Bradford people to help them with their research.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals is one of only three sites across the UK currently enlisted in the PERFECTED (Perioperative Enhanced Recovery hip FracturE Care of paTiEnts with Dementia) study which will examine the way hospitals care for and rehabilitate patients after they undergo surgery for a fractured hip.

This five-year programme will investigate how better standards of care can be implemented across the NHS to improve the outcomes of hospital admission for people with dementia.

Currently, one quarter of acute NHS hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia and rehabilitation is difficult due to acute confusion “delirium” and other complications. Many return home in worse health than when they were admitted.

Now the research programme is looking for local people, who have been touched by dementia, to act as lay researchers and advisory members on its study.

Isla Dowds, Patient and Public Involvement Facilitator at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘The main reason for involving local people in this way is so that their expertise - gained through their personal experience - can shape the research programme.

“They can make sure that it reflects how a person affected by dementia might think or feel about it.

“This type of insight is vital in helping researchers understand people’s needs related to having dementia, and to make sure these are taken into account in designing and carrying out the research.

That is a powerful contribution to make to the vital work of improving care for people with dementia.”

Lay researchers will help the programme to assist in the collection and analysis of interviews. Some training will be given and expenses will be paid. The programme is being led by the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences following a grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Carers or people living with dementia are also being sought for the advisory group, which will meet two to four times a year. Researchers are hoping that people will commit to helping their study for at least two years.

Dr Simon Hammond, Programme Manager and Research Fellow for the PERFECTED study, added: “This is an exciting opportunity for people to bring their knowledge of what it is like living with dementia and marry that with the expertise of the researchers working on the programme.

“We need people who will be willing to contribute to discussions and making decisions, and help us produce research that can be understood and put to practical use.”

The programme involves a UK and international team of researchers with the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK as partners.

A key international collaborator is Prof Malaz Boustani – a US expert in implementation science and aging brain care at Indiana University’s School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, who is also president of the American Delirium Society.

The study is hosted by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where initial research will take place. Up to 10 hospitals will take part in the research. After the programme has ended, it is hoped that the guidelines will be rolled out under a four-year trial across the NHS.

Statistics handed to the Asian Express this past week have revealed that anti-Semitic crimes in the UK reached a record level in July 2014, with a large proportion of the crimes committed by people from the South Asian community.

Figures released by the Community Security Trust (CST) show a shocking 400 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, as which there were 302 separate incidents.

This figure is also just two fewer than the first six months of 2014 in which 304 incidents were reported.

CST officials have drawn a direct correlation between attacks on Britain’s Jewish population and the events in Hamas and Israel - of the 302 crimes, 155 had direct reference to the ongoing conflict which began in July.

CST obtained a description of the offender for 107 of the total incidents recorded. Of these, 55 offenders, 51 per cent, were described as being of south Asian

appearance; 32 offenders, 31 per cent, were described as white; 15, 14 per cent, were described as being of Arab or north African appearance; and five, five per cent, were described as black.

Representing just over seven per

cent of the country’s full population, the statistics show a worrying over-representation for south Asians.

Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's northwest Nineveh province have created a police force to ‘implement the orders of the religious judiciary’, according to a wellknown militant Islamist website.

Photos on the website showed armed men in black clothing with ‘Islamic Police Nineveh State’ printed on the arm. The police forces were in freshly painted police cars and one photo showed militiamen on a river boat.

It was not clear when

the photos were posted or when the police force was established.

The text on the website said the force would ‘maintain order and arrest culprits and the corrupt’. It continued by saying it would be different from police forces in other states, which it described as ‘a tool to suppress dissent’.

However, residents in Nineveh told Reuters the police's main duty appears to be to detain people they consider opposed to their cause.

France air strikes Iraq

France said on Friday its jets had launched strikes inside Iraq for the first time since the country promised to join military action against Islamic State insurgents who have taken over parts of the country.

“This morning at 9:40am our Rafale jets launched a first strike against a logistics depot of the terrorists,” President Francois Hollande's office said a statement issued shortly after the raids.

The target in northeast Iraq was totally destroyed, said the statement, adding that there would be further operations ‘in the coming

days’.

Hollande told a news conference on Thursday that French air strikes were imminent and would take place once reconnaissance flights had identified targets. He said the military action would be limited to Iraq, and no ground troops would be sent.

France has expressed its willingness to be part of the military, political and financial coalition being created by the United States to defeat the Islamic State militants controlling parts of northern Iraq and Syria.

Nazi councillors resign

A group of six Iranians have been sentenced to six months in prison and 91 lashes after dancing and singing in a video on the internet.

The group, featuring three men and three women, were dancing to Pharrell William’s hit song ‘Happy’ – mimicking the dances in the official music video.

Re-enacting the famous video, the group uploaded their clip to YouTube in May this year and quickly brought in more than 150,000 views from around the world.

However, as well as a number of admirers, the group’s actions were also seen by Iranian authorities who arrested the six individuals and the producer that same month.

The arrests drew condemnation from Pharrell himself alongside his fans through social media, as well as indirect criticism from moderate President Hassan Rouhani.

“The way to deal with cultural issues is cultural work, not policemen and (detention) vans and strong-arm tactics,” the president told a gathering of conservative clerics in the religious city of Mashhad earlier this month.

Nonetheless, the six defendants were forced to apologise for their actions, deemed to have been contravening Iran’s strict vulgarity laws, which prohibits public displays of dancing in the country.

The Islamic Republic labelled the film a ‘vulgar clip which hurt public chastity’.

The women appearing in the video were also condemned for appearing bare headed, a direct violation of the Islamic dress code enforced after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

All six were paraded on state television where they were made to express remorse for their actions, before sentencing was handed out.

The six individuals seen dancing and singing were each given a six-month suspended sentence and 91 lashes whilst the director received a one-year suspended sentence and 91 lashes.

“A suspended sentence becomes null and void after a certain period of time,” their lawyer, Farshid Rofougaran, told Iran Wire.

“When it’s a suspended sentence, the verdict is not carried out, but if during this period a similar offense is committed, then the accused is subject to legal punishment and the suspended sentence will then be carried out as well.”

Two conservative town council members in eastern Austria have resigned from their posts and left the People's Party after a documentary film showed them singing and toasting one another in a basement room filled with Nazi memorabilia.

The case has prompted extensive media coverage in Austria, which is still coming to terms with its past as part of Nazi Germany after Adolf Hitler, who was born in Austria, annexed the country in 1938.

Talks between Afghanistan's rival presidential candidates have stalled again, in part over when and how to release the final results of an election that both say was rigged by the other side, officials said on Wednesday.

Xi left India on Friday after a visit to boost trade and economic ties that have been marred by a long-standing border dispute.

The blooper occurred on a show on Doordarshan news on Wednesday.

“It is an unpardonable mistake,” the official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, saying the anchor was employed on a casual basis.

“We have debarred her from news reading for a few months.”

The official said a shortage of news readers had forced the channel to run some news bulletins with casuals.

Parties clash as protests continue

A person’s patience can often be pushed too far by the smallest of acts. So, after protestors remain camped outside Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s offices for over a month, it is only natural that the country’s leader is starting to show signs of frustration.

The camp was set up outside government offices in Islamabad with protestors led by former cricket star, Imran Khan, and firebrand cleric, Tahir ul-Qadri.

The two sides have been locked in a bitter stand-off since August when Sharif won the latest election with a landslide victory, something campaigners claim was rigged.

Now, the nation’s leader has stepped up his plans to remove protestors from their location, making his announcement on public television.

“Up until now, we have tolerated all this and acted with decency and patience,” Sharif said. “Otherwise it's no hard task for us to clear the way and clear the streets.”

In response, opposition leaders

ordered thousands of their supporters to resist any attempt to remove them from their protests this weekend, and urged them to continue challenging the current authority.

Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party said it had not backed down from its demand that Sharif quit and was ending dialogue with the government after 100 activists were jailed over the weekend.

“We have not withdrawn our demand for the resignation of the prime minister,” said Jehangir Tareen, the party's secretary general. “There is no point in continuing the dialogue with the government after the crackdown on our workers.”

The confrontation turned violent last month, with thousands trying to storm Sharif's house and briefly taking the state television channel off air.

Violence in the usually quiet capital has alarmed many people in a nation where power has often changed hands though military coups rather than elections.

Mars Mission countdown India prepare for touchdown on red planet

Last year, I n d i a launched its first ever mission to Mars and now the spacecraft is almost ready to begin its attempt to orbit the red planet.

Next week the low-cost $74m mission shuttle will come to its most crucial point with the nation hoping to join the leaders of a global space race that has so far discarded India.

A successful outcome would help strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans to build new space launch facilities which would be capable of handling heavier satellites in the future.

Mission, called Mangalyaan, began its journey to the fourth planet from the sun.

Its primary objective is to study the planet’s surface and mineral composition, and scan its atmosphere for methane.

If successful, the country will be the first nation to have succeeded in attempting to enter orbit around Mars on its first try – unlike the US, Russia and other European countries.

The date has been set for Wednesday 24th September for when the technicians say the spacecraft will arrive.

“Confidence is high,” V. Koteswara Rao, scientific secretary at the Indian Space Research Organisation

(ISRO), told Reuters. “All the operations done so far are successful and all the parameters measured are normal.”

ISRO has already uploaded commands to help the spacecraft automatically enter orbit on the morning of 24th September.

Two days before that, scientists will run a four-second test of a main engine that has been idle for around 300 days, and make a small course correction, Rao said.

However, experts say it will be challenging to get the trajectory right and cut the craft's speed from its current rate of 13.7 miles per second to allow it to enter orbit.

US President Barack Obama has nominated former State Department official, Richard Verma, as US ambassador to India, just ahead of Narendra Modi’s first visit to the White House.

Verma would become the first IndianAmerican to do the job and has served previously as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration between 2009 and 2011.

He is currently one of the senior counsellors at Steptoe and Johnson law firm as well as the Albright Stonebridge Group, a business advisory company, led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Due to his close relationship with the Obama administration, Verma already has close ties with White House Chief of Staff, Denis McDonough, National Security Adviser, Susan Rice, and senior adviser, John Podesta.

If he is confirmed by Congress, Verma will replace Nancy Powell, who resigned in March

after a damaging row over the treatment of a junior Indian diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, who was accused by authorities in New York of visa fraud and underpaying a domestic worker.

Khobragade was arrested and strip-searched in New York last year, an incident that took the US-India relationship to its lowest point in a decade.

Modi is due to visit Washington at the end of the month for a trip aimed at revitalising ties and clearing the air.

The new Indian Prime Minister was previously denied a visa to the United States in 2005 after Hindu mobs killed more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, in 2002 while he was chief minister of his home state of Gujarat.

The United States sees India as a natural ally on a range of issues and in 2010, Obama declared the US-India relationship as ‘one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century,’ but added that ties have so far failed to live up to their full billing.

McLaren 650S Sprint

‘makes its debut’ The new 650S Sprint by McLaren GT is set for its global competitive premiere this weekend at the penultimate round of the GT Cup race at Donington Park, UK. The 650S Sprint is developed and optimised for the track, and eligibility has now been confirmed to race in the NARRA US GT series, the SCCA GT Championship and the UAE GT series. McLaren GT factory driver Rob Bell will be joined by German-based journalist Dale Lomas, for the weekend’s triple-header.

The covers were pulled off the McLaren 650S Sprint at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last month, and the race this

weekend marks the European debut of the car, in the most public of arenas. Racing with McLaren GT customer team Von Ryan Racing, the 650S Sprint will contest three races during the weekend – one sprint race incorporating a driver-change on Saturday, followed by two shorter events on Sunday, with the drivers contesting one complete race each.

McLaren GT factory driver Rob Bell returns to the Von Ryan Racing team after running at this year’s Total 24 Hours of Spa in the 12C GT3. In addition, Bell has been involved in the development of the 650S Sprint so has extensive knowledge of the

track-only racer. Bell will share driving duties with experienced Nürburgring-racer Lomas, who has shown good pace in testing ahead of the event.

Based on the road-going 650S, the aerodynamically enhanced design of the 650S Sprint offers increased levels of downforce, and the revised air intakes offer optimised cooling of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo M838T engine. In the 650S Sprint, the proven powerplant is retained from the 650S roadcar, with a unique engine and transmission calibration to further enhance on track drivability and driver engagement.

The car will be priced at around £200,000.

New technology to power the family car of 2020

The family cars of the next decade will be some of the most economical mainstream cars ever built, thanks to a raft of cutting-edge technologies which are already being worked on.

Top five new technologies will propel the average family car to achieve CO2 output figures of well under 90g/km and fuel efficiency levels of more than 300mpg. The average family car achieved just 132g/km of CO2 in 2012 and is expected to manage 130g/km by

The European Union has set stringent regulations that require all car makers to meet a rigorous set of average CO2 emissions standards across their entire fleet of vehicles. These come into force in 2020.

Flywheels, electric turbochargers and intelligent aerodynamics will shape the way the mid-market saloons and hatchbacks will be built with the specific aim of meeting those standards.

Prediction of top five new fuel-saving technologies Flywheels

A British-designed flywheel system, which is used to drive the rear wheels of a front-wheel-drive car, is currently in testing. Flywheels can store waste energy and then release it, much like an electric motor and battery. Flywheel systems are also about a quarter of the cost of a hybrid set-up, far less complex and much lighter.

Variable Compression Ratio Engines

Earlier this year, it was announced that manufacturers were developing engines with variable compression ratios. Being able to vary an engine’s compression ratio depending on the demands being placed on it will lead to significant advances in efficiency.

Coasting

Coasting technology is something that is certain to be used on future models and will most likely be rolled out in three stages. The first stage, coasting at speed - is already a feature on cars fitted with dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. The next version will function when a car is travelling below 4mph. The ultimate version will allow transmission decoupling and engine shut-down when cruising at speed, travelling downhill or approaching traffic lights that are about to turn red.

Electric Turbochargers

Manufacturers have already begun to preview their own versions of electric turbocharging by using a powerful fan in the engine’s induction system. This fan blows air through the turbo when the engine is decelerating in order to spin the turbo fan up to speed so that full boost is available as soon as the driver gets back on the accelerator.

Enclosed Wheel Wells

It is believed that wheel wells might yield big reductions in drag. The step would involve enclosing the wheel housing so airflow doesn’t get trapped as it travels under the car. This would mean fitting an undertray that extends beneath the front wishbones. Audi has made significant gains in reducing the whole-life impact on the environment of its latest high-tech sports car.

Compared with its predecessor, the new Audi TT scores high with an increase in power output of up to 14 per cent and a simultaneous decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of 11 per cent.

As the premium vehicle manufacturer states in its new life cycle assessment of the thirdgeneration TT, this means that each car in the series saves around 5.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases over its entire life cycle.

This includes not just carbon dioxide, but other substances such

as methane, nitrous oxide and halogenated organic emissions.

A host of technologies have contributed towards the positive life cycle assessment of the Audi TT, including lightweight construction.

An intelligent combination of materials have been used by Audi engineers, who have now, for the second time in a row, succeeded in reducing the car’s unladen weight.

The first model change in 2006 saw weight savings of up to 90 kilograms achieved. With the front-wheel driven 2.0 TFSI engine variant of the new TT now weighing in at just 1,230 kilograms, this means that the car is once again around 50 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

Weight reduction and intelligent lightweight construction measures also have an impact on the vehicle manufacturing process. Here they’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions by around nine per cent, or 800 kilograms.

Codenamed M178 – the V8 biturbo engine, displaces 3,982 cc and is equipped with dry sump lubrication and twin turbochargers. In GT S form it produces its peak of 510 hp (GT: 462 hp) at 6,250 rpm (6,000 rpm) and 650 Nm of torque (600 Nm) between 1,750 and 4,750 rpm (1,600 and 5,000 rpm). It returns 30.1 mpg (30.4 mpg) and emits 219 g/km of CO2 (216 g/km).

It’s the first sports car engine with internally mounted turbochargers ('hot inside V'), is configured in two output ratings: as a GT with 462 hp and as a GT S with 510 hp and hits 3.8 seconds from zero to 62 mph and a top speed of 193 mph. It’s also the newest member of the Mercedes BlueDIRECT engine family.

The creative interaction of diverse external design elements combined with the extensive Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive assistance systems and ultimate luxury, lends the two-seater coupé a superior, self-confident look.

The high-performance variant of the upcoming Jaguar is set to rival the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Word on the grapevine is that the 5.0-litre V8 beast is to be dubbed the Jaguar XE SVR, and will reportedly arrive by early 2016, about one year after the regular model goes on sale.

Under the hood, it will unsurprisingly use Jaguar’s existing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, which will turn the powertrain to deliver a total of 489 hp.

The Jaguar XE SVR is set to sprint to 100 km/h in an impressive four seconds as well as an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Jaguar however, recently confirmed that the XE will be capable of hitting over 300 km/h (186 mph) so this will probably

come by unlocking the limiter at the customer’s request.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated with the potent engine and the vehicle will adopt larger performance brakes as well as revised and stiffer suspension and an electronically controlled limited slip differential.

The bodykit will come adapted to couple with the aggressive with high-performance variants of the Jaguar XE. This bodykit will likely include new bumpers, side skirts, a redesigned front grille, quad tailpipes and a rear diffuser.

Testing for the XE SVR has been prognosticated at the Nurburgring - so we should see prototypes hitting the track early next year.

It wasn’t just only the England Cricket side celebrating earlier this month as Big John’s Cricket Team picked up a title of their own.

Having clinched victory over local league rivals, Metropolitan XI, the Birmingham-based side won the Division One 40-over title on Sunday 8th September, finishing 79 points ahead of their closest competitors.

Set a target of 196 by Metropolitan XI, Big Johns reached the target with five wickets in hand at Blossomfield Cricket Club in Shirley.

“I am extremely proud of the team,” said Bob Saddiq, Team Chairman. “We have an extremely good work ethic and the players have performed well throughout the season.

“We have been unbeaten throughout the season, having played 14 games in the 40-over competition and only being beaten once by the rain where the game was called off.”

Big John’s Cricket Club consists of mainly staff and local community players, whilst siblings Omar and Kadir Ali – brothers of England Spin Bowler and batsman Moeen Ali, also appear

for the side.

The season also saw a debutant for the team with Mustapha Babar becoming the side’s youngest player at just 16-years-old.

“We have a great team spirit in our camp and all the players work as a unit,” Mr Saddiq said.

“They are all from working backgrounds and have full time jobs, but dedicate the weekends to playing the game they love.”

Following their league success, Big John’s side will now turn their attention to the 30-over contest, with the final set to be played on 27th September, and the T20 finals day, being held at the prestigious Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

The official awards ceremony may not be held until later this year yet team captain, Shafiq Mushtaq, says that will not stop the team celebrating this latest success.

“The Awards ceremony and Dinner is not until November this year, however for now we will celebrate the win with a Big John’s Pizza,” he said.

“We would like to thank the Local Leagues, Birmingham City Council and Edgbaston Cricket ground for organising and hosting this event.”

British professional boxer Audley Harrison was crowned second place winner in the Channel 5 reality series Celebrity Big Brother.

I was personally surprised as I was not expecting Harrison to even get through the first round (as has been the case in his previous meaningful boxing bouts) of the big brother reality series.

However to my amazement what has been proved is that even though as a boxer Harrison may have failed public expectations in the boxing ring, he as a person and “boxing celebrity” is still liked by the majority British public who voted for him.

The Harrison story is that of a man who was expected to win world titles and dominate the heavyweight boxing ring but instead he failed to deliver and is probably the biggest boxing under achiever in the history of the sport.

Harrison a 6ft 6in boxer, weighing in at 116 Kg had all of the boxing credentials to become a great British boxer was once tipped to emulate Lennox Lewis and become a dominant world champion.

Harrison turned professional in 2001 after winning the boxing gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and became the first British superheavyweight to achieve this honour. He was also awarded an MBE following the medal win and at that stage of his career he was known as a boxing prospect.

As a professional Harrison signed a contract with BBC Sport worth a million pounds and then had 17 successful fights undefeated with them before the BBC pulled all boxing from their programmes.

Harrison also set up a promotional company to promote his fights and secured several high profile sponsorship deals worth millions of pounds.

Harrison as a boxer went onto to achieve some boxing success in the ring as he was the two time Prize fighter tournament winner and a European heavyweight champion.

However in a boxing world where you are only as good as your last fight and where there are no prizes for second place Harrison will be remembered for his disappointing performances more than his success.

I recall Harrison only throwing one punch against the then British World Champion David Haye as he was battered for three rounds and the terrible boxing displays against the likes of Danny Williams and David Price that resulted in heavy losses for him.

This is a man who started his career as an Olympic gold winner and ended it with a disastrous display of boxing against American heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder as he was knocked out in just 70 seconds.

Harrison now at the age of 42 years old and having been retired for several years has stated that he is seriously considering another boxing return, but in my opinion the reason for his return to the hardest sport in the world seems bizarre. There is talk already that Harrison maybe lined up to fight hot British heavyweight prospect Anthony Joshua but personally I see that bout ending one way and that is with a first round win via knockout for Joshua.

Instead I would like to see Harrison staying retired and maybe using his new found popularity amongst the British public to some good use and to his advantage but unfortunately for him in my opinion boxing is not the answer to that success.

I wish Harrison all the success in his future and if he does decide to return to boxing then I hope he can prove me wrong and go onto to achieve the greatest boxing comebacks in the history of the sport, but personally there is more chance of pigs flying.

At times the 25-mile challenge proved as rocky as the route, with some walkers relying on moonlight to guide them over the finish line yet that did not stop them from finishing.

Amongst those taking part was avid fundraiser, Tariq Qadeer, who has completed several long-distance routes in the past.

Speaking after his latest venture, and the challenges of walking in the dark, Mr Qadeer said: “What a memorable day we had last Sunday.

“We started to climb the third, probably most demanding peak, Ingleborough, at around 5.45pm and the sunset was in two hours.

“We managed to get to the top of Ingleborough at 7.20pm. Thankfully, God Almighty was very kind to us as and, after the glorious day, it was clear skies, full moon and beautiful moonlight which was just enough for us to see our path, stones, rocks and the muddy areas.

“None of us had torches and we had initially been anticipating to finish by 8pm at the latest.

“By the time we got back to the

starting point it was 9.30pm and we had been walking for over 13 hours.”

He added: “We were lucky to all get back in one piece and without any injuries but what a fantastic day it was for some wonderful causes.”

The group’s day started in Bramhope at 6.30am before beginning their walk from the village of Horton in Ribblesdale just after 8am.

The Pen-y-Ghent was the first peak reached in the Yorkshire Dales before Whernside and Ingleborough were finally conquered later in the day.

Rocky roads, slippy surfaces and some vertical climbs were not enough to deter the group who mustered their way to the end.

Mr Qadeer added: “I just want to say a big thank you to all the brave, and crazy, people who sacrificed their time and money to put themselves through this hardship to raise a few hundred pounds for two charities.

No Guts, No Heart, No Glory Critically acclaimed production returns to Bradford

Four years ago, the UK’s first Muslim female boxer entered a boxing ring for her competitive debut, embarking on a journey never before seen in her culture.

Now, at the age of 19, Ambreen Sadiq’s powerful story is portrayed, alongside those of fellow young Muslim women who have taken up a passion for the sport, in the critically acclaimed production – ‘No Guts, No Heart, No Glory’.

Examining the assumptions and expectations held of young Muslim women in both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities, the story is one which highlight’s life’s possibilities no matter the circumstances.

Winner of the Scotsman Fringe First Award, and short-listed for Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, the play makes its long awaited return to Bradford next week.

Critics have applauded the production for its energetic display of sheer determination, showing the human will to succeed in a field no matter what situation you find yourself in.

Ambreen, who became a national champion at just 16 years of age, has taken up a coaching role, whilst fellow Bradford-born boxer and former British University champion, Saira Tabasum, stars as herself.

Ambreen explained what people can expect from the inspiring production which relates closely to her own personal experiences.

She said: “I feel that it’s based on my story. An Asian girl or woman boxing is a huge thing in our culture especially when you are Pakistani and a Muslim, it’s seen as not very ladylike.

“I want to get the point across that boxing is not just for boys. I want to inspire girls from all backgrounds to do what they dream of doing whether that’s boxing or not.”

RETIRING For the past decade, Li Na has been at the forefront of tennis in China, becoming Asia’s only Grand Slam singles champion and rising to a career high of number two in the world.

Yet now, following years of pain, the ‘Golden Flower’ has announced her retirement from tennis, ultimately succumbing to the effect of long-term knee injuries.

The former French Open winner, and reigning Australian Open champion, said her knees had plagued her throughout her career in the sport, preventing her from ever reaching full fitness and thus her full potential.

Announcing the decision on her official Facebook page, the 32-year-old said: “The task of finally making a decision to hang up my racquet felt a lot more difficult than winning seven matches in a row in the Australian heat,” she said in a letter posted on her Facebook page.

“It took me several agonizing months to finally come to the decision that my chronic injuries will never again let me be the tennis player that I can be.

“Walking away from the sport, effective immediately, is the right decision for me and my family.”

As one of the most popular players on the tour, news of her retirement set off a flood of tributes.

The Chinese Tennis Association, in a statement released by the official Xinhua news agency, said it respected her decision and wished her the best.

“We also thank Li Na for the passionate and proud, shining moments she gave to Chinese tennis in her competitive career,” it said.

Top tennis players posted notes to Na on their social media accounts.

Caroline Wozniacki wrote: “Li Na, one of the funniest and nicest players on tour. A great competitor and a role model both on and off the court. You will be missed. An exciting new chapter starts today.”

for the sport, at how they had said ‘I will be who I want to be and do what I want to do’ and we thought this was a powerful message that spoke to all young women and young men,” she said.

“We see No Guts, No Heart, No Glory as...an opportunity for us to make something positive and create an atmosphere of a club, with loud music and strong female characters.”

No Guts, No Heart, No Glory returned to Bradford this past week with a first performance taking place on Thursday 11th September at Huggy’s Gym, Manchester Road.

A team of trekkers from across Yorkshire took on a mammoth challenge last weekend as thousands of feet were scaled, and hundreds of pounds were raised, all in the name of charity.

It was a long way up for fundraisers from the Candlelighters charity and Imran Khan Cancer Appeal as the Yorkshire Three Peaks route was completed in just over 13 hours.

14 brave participants took on the challenge, with the youngest being just 12-years-old, as the hilly terrain was conquered.
