Largest pro-Gaza protest in history London
By Tanya Shah

tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
Last week witnessed hundreds of thousands of people across the globe united in protest against the crimes committed by the Israeli army upon innocent civilians in Gaza. Calls for the world-wide proPalestinian solidarity came from an organisation known as the ‘Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions Movement’ (BDS). Promoted as ‘Gaza Calling: Day of Rage’, thousands stood in solidarity for human rights for Gazans across cities around the world on the 8th and 9th August. Public frustration continues to pour out through social media against the sluggish reaction by western world-leaders to intervene and bring justice to the Palestinian people. Supporters of Gaza demand an end to Israel’s ‘barbaric’ assault on Gaza, and calls on the British government to implement an immediate embargo on arms sales to Israel. Major mainstream news networks also continue to be slammed for their ‘biased reporting’ and for ‘wateringdown’ the horrors subjected upon innocent Palestinian civilians by the Israeli government. Although figures are unconfirmed, it’s been estimated that over 200,000 people partook in the London protests. The United Kingdom’s largest demonstration for Gaza made history, not only as the biggest protest in solidarity with Palestine in the UK, but also as the largest
in the world, at any time in history. Protestors gathered outside Broadcasting House headquarters of the BBC, in London and marched to Hyde Park, passing the US Embassy. Along with London and Glasgow, protests were held in New York, Washington DC, Yemen, Cape Town, Tokyo,
Washington DC, USA
Berlin, Paris and other major cities across the globe. BDS - a wide coalition of the largest Palestinian organisations, trade unions, networks and NGOs, was initiated by a civil rights group in 2005, and pushes for Israel to comply with international law and fights for Palestinian rights.

PLEA: Cllr Ishtiaq Ahmed, alongside children and a parent from St Pauls Street, stand with the pile of waste
www.asianexpress.co.uk
August 2014 - 2nd Edition
‘Take it away’
Dumped asbestos ‘endangers’ local kids A large pile of dangerous waste material, which was dumped on a narrow street in Bradford three months ago, has taken away local children’s ‘right to play’ according to a councillor. The site, on St Pauls Street, in Manningham, was turned into a dumping ground when a van pulled up, dropped off the asbestos covered material, and never came back for it. Now, councillor for Manningham, Ishtiaq Ahmed, says the waste ‘must be moved’ as it is endangering the children. “As a local councillor my concerns are that this is a major health and safety issue,” he said. “You have children out here playing on the street, cars driving up and down, all going over the asbestos. This is giving rise to dust particles that are then being
breathed in by children which is very dangerous. “To see this remain here for three months is just wrong. Children have a right to a safe place to play and this is taking that away from them so the local authority must take action.” The small street is not a popular one for motorists yet there are clear signs of broken materials on the floor as a result of the waste pile. Children often use the street to play games, whilst small pets can also gather the dust on their fur and take it into homes. These factors are only causing more danger to the residents according to Cllr Ahmed who adds that sanctions must be removed to stop dumping in public streets. “At the moment people have to
pay for bulk items to be taken away from their homes, whereas before they had the free bulk waste collection,” he said. “What we are seeing now is people coming around, saying ‘we’ll take that away for £30’ which initially sounds great because it would cost a lot more to get hold of a skip. The issue is that they pick the waste up, go two miles down the road and dump it.” Bradford Council currently requires residents to obtain a permit to use certified waste sites, and despite the ease of use, Cllr Ahmed says it should be more readily available to all. He added: “We need to get rid of this red tape around the permits to ensure all people have easy access to dumping sites because ultimately, if not, it will just end up on the streets.”

Pakistan Independence Day RESPECT: More than one hundred guests gathered at the consulate in Bradford to celebrate the Independence day
Annual holiday celebrated by millions around the world By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Sixty-eight years ago, Pakistan became its own Independent nation as it separated from the Indian subcontinent which had been previously united under the British Raj. Upon the announcement of the independence, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the first Governor General of Pakistan, sent out the following message to his fellow countrymen as the state of Pakistan was born. “It is with feelings of greatest happiness and emotion that I send you my greetings. “August 15th (later changed to 14th) is the birthday of the independent and sovereign State of Pakistan. “It marks the fulfilment of the destiny of the Muslim nation which made great sacrifices in the past few years to have its homeland.” Now, and every year since 1947, the national holiday has been celebrated around the world with prayers, songs, parades and the hoisting of the country’s flag marking the special occasion. In Pakistan, President Mamnoon Hussain addressed the nation in a ceremony held at the President House, where he also hoisted the flag alongside Prime Minister Nawaz and army chief Raheel Sharif. Hussain’s message emphasised the importance of a cohesive society where people live in harmony to help the nation push forward at a time what he described as being in a state of war and terror. Closer to home, at the Consulate of Pakistan in Bradford, more than one hundred guests gathered to witness a flag raising ceremony by the consul, Mr Khalil Bajwa, and local Member of European Parliament, Amjad Bashir. The national anthem was observed by all in attendance as the flag was raised in the building before further celebrations took place. There was also speeches and music performed by honorary guests, both young and old, as just a selection of the city’s Pakistani population celebrated their home country’s independence.

‘Two star’ students from a West Yorkshire grammar school have seen their hard work pay off this week as a bounty load of A*s were awarded out on A-Level results day. Trina Seal and Vandan Parmar were both awarded four A* grades when they picked up their results on Thursday morning from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL). Having worked tirelessly throughout the past two years on their academic studies, the pair were the standout performers, taking top marks in every class. GSAL principal Mike Gibbons said he was incredibly proud to see the students’ level of achievement which will allow them to study at their universities of choice. He added: “For the students, today is the culmination of years of hard work and we would also like to express our thanks to parents and staff for all their support and guidance.” 18-year-old Vandan, from Shadwell, Leeds, was delighted to obtain his four A*s in all of his subjects – maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. As if tackling four A-Levels wasn’t enough to handle, the GSAL student also passed his Grade Eight violin exam in the midst of his busy academic life. Describing the situation as ‘hectic at points’, Vandan says he was confident he had excelled in every subject but was now more than happy to see the results were official. “I was actually aiming for four A*s but there is always that small bit

It was really nice to tell her and I look forward to studying natural sciences now at Cambridge.” Fellow standout performer, Trina Seal, will also study natural sciences at the prestigious English university at the Sidney Sussex College. Speaking after opening her results she said: “It’s been a nervous wait for the results, but I’ve been on the school’s choir tour to Prague which helped to take my mind off it. “I’m so looking forward to Cambridge – it’s a unique course that allows in depth study of a good mixture of science topics.” In total 20 representatives from the GSAL achieved the coveted A* grades in three or more subjects. Across the country, thousands more students were opening their envelopes on the morning of 14th August to see what their future would hold. Amongst the range of emotions, from celebrations to tears, the overall pass rate (grades A-E) fell for the first time in 32 years, down 0.1 per cent from last year to 98 per cent. The number of students achieving the top grade of the A* however, did improve to a record high of 8.2 per cent, whilst more than 400,000 students were also accepted onto their university course, which is another record.

‘Save our libraries’
CAMPAIGN: Users of the Batley Library show their frustrations at proposed plans to close down the site, pictured with Jo Cox (second from left)
Community call for action to protect public services By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As cuts from central government continue to take their toll on constituencies across the country, a group in West Yorkshire are rallying together in an attempt to save some of their ‘most loved’ services. There are currently four libraries operating in the Batley and Spen area which are all at risk of being closed down due to budget restraints. A petition was launched last week in an attempt to protect the sites and it has already begun gathering dozens of signatures from residents young and old. 15-year-old Haris Rashid, from Staincliffe, is one of the service users and contacted local politicians to get onboard with the campaign project. Explaining why it was so important to keep the libraries running, he said: “The library is a really important and valuable resource for Batley and for people of all ages and walks of life. “It simply cannot close and we must fight to protect it. That's why we contacted Jo (Cox) for her support to help campaign to keep it open.” In total, Kirklees has 26 libraries
available to residents of the district yet due to the millions of pounds which needs slashing from the budget, 24 are in danger of closure. Jo Cox, representative for Batley and Spen, condemned plans to close any of the four sites in her constituency labelling any such action as ‘appalling’. She said: “Our libraries are among the ‘Wonders of Kirklees’ – from the gorgeous, historic building at Batley to the spectacular art deco library in Cleckheaton. “I have visited local libraries this week and they were packed with people from all backgrounds and all ages. “If these buildings close they will be lost forever, we will never get them back. They will be quickly sold off and converted into something else. No one wants to see this and we can’t allow it to happen.” Mrs Cox said she had taken the decision to launch the petition to protect all four libraries in the area. She added: “Uniquely in Batley and Spen, our library services are enhanced hugely by their buildings. Close or relocate the libraries to a pokey corner somewhere else and you diminish the service and experience for everyone.”
Local Author, Ahmad Lunat OBE
If the council were to go ahead with these proposed closures it would have a huge negative impact on the whole area. Any library, anywhere, is a lifeline for a community as it gives every person access to something as valuable as knowledge. It should be a basic right for people to have access to these kinds of facilities. If you are going to deprive people of these sites in Batley it would have a big effect on all generations. Children need access to the books as they provide them with so much information to improve in their academic life. Without these services they cannot make such progress and will be forced to go elsewhere which will not be as productive. Where will they turn to? Where will they read? It will impact them significantly. I also hope the council will not look upon this matter from a financial viewpoint as it is much more important than that, you cannot put price on knowledge and what people can learn here. It would be very disappointing to see any of the facilities close in the whole district.

‘Hijacked’ peaceful protests with ‘intolerance’
George Galloway’s comments still under the spotlight
CONTROVERSIAL: George Galloway MP was investigated by police after his comments regarding Israel at a pro-Palestine rally last week
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
One week on from George Galloway’s declaration of Bradford as an ‘Israel-free zone’, the Respect Party representative has not backed down from his claims. The controversial MP kicked off the row last week after speaking during a Palestine rally in Leeds where he also announced that he doesn’t want ‘any Israeli tourists to come to Bradford’ or ‘Israeli academics coming to the university or college’. Since the conflict began to escalate in Gaza and Israel last month, anti-Semitic crimes have risen across the UK. Rabbi at the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue in Bradford, Rabbi Jason Kleiman, says he has not had any reports of such instances but added that Mr Galloway’s comments had created a ‘hostile’ environment for any Jews visiting the city. Rabbi Kleiman, who backed the

proposal to fly the Palestine flag in Bradford in support of all the innocent civilians who had died in the conflict, also labelled Mr Galloway’s comments as ‘counter-productive’. “Such comments are regrettable and do nothing at all to help with the current troubles and conflict in Gaza and Israel,” he said. “What Mr Galloway has said is counterproductive because at this moment we need a message of peace not violence. “In Bradford we have a wonderful example of religions living side by side, with the Muslim community even helping to save a synagogue a couple of years ago. “It is a shame Mr Galloway has now hijacked something which was about peace not violence with a message of intolerance for Israel. I don’t believe many people will support his message and hope we can all look past it.” Meanwhile, an ‘evening with George Galloway’ which was set to take place in Belfast next weekend has been brought into doubt. The MP says he will not withdraw from the event yet members of Belfast City Council have said they are seeking legal advice after the event was opposed to by some unionist parties. With Bradford’s first independent safe deposit vault opening this month, the security service has been propelled back into the public eye, leaving many to wonder why it had almost been completely removed from the city. Previously, all the major banks offered safe deposit boxes to clients wanting a secure place to store valuable goods, whether it be financial or sentimental items. However, over the past few years, the boxes have slowly disappeared from public use and as of 2012, all major UK banks – HSBC, RBS, Lloyds, Standard Chartered, Barclays, Co-operative bank, and Santander, stopped providing the service to new customers. Several reasons have been put forward as to why this trend has occurred from the cost of running the facilities for banks, to potential adverse publicity should something be misplaced in the bank’s vault. Whatever the defining factor may be, the fact remains that more and more households across the city are now forced to keep their goods at home
with no alternate option available. Gold theft in Bradford has been a major problem over recent years with many Asian households targeted for their expensive jewellery, often worth thousands of pounds. Paul Jones from Zurich Safe, Yorkshire’s only independent provider of safe deposit boxes, said this was one of the key reasons why the business had been set up in the city. “We have all seen a recent rise in gold thefts across Bradford through the media and one of the main reasons behind this is because these valuable items cannot be stored safely,” he said. “Families have no option but to keep their valuable goods at home where they are at risk of being stolen or lost. “A safe deposit box removes that danger and ensures people can keep their possessions safe and still accessible whenever they require them.” Whether Zurich Safe will act as a catalyst for other similar ventures to be launched is yet to be seen, yet the small price paid to keep valuables safe, is sure to be much lower than the price of a lost or stolen family heirloom.

Bradford Sea Cadets name new representative SIBLINGS: Abbas Younis and older brother Ummar have both held the title of Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet and hope to join the Royal Navy when they finish their academic studies
Q&A with your property law solicitor
DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to landlord and tenant law.
• What are the legal grounds for evicting a tenant from a let property? There are a total of 17 (mandatory and discretionary) grounds for possession of a property as specified within the Housing Act 1988. The following are some of the common grounds that are relied upon: • Rent arrears • Tenant breaches a contractual (lease or tenancy) term other than rent payments • Damage to the property caused by the tenant ENROLLED: Abbas took up the role last week after receiving a badge of office at a special ceremony at Bradford City Hall
Keeping it in the family A teenager from Bradford was following in his brother’s footsteps last week as he was named Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet for the upcoming year. 16-year-old Abbas Younis was installed as the new representative at a special ceremony at City Hall, taking over the reins from older sibling, Ummar. Abbas, from Allerton, will be tasked with accompanying the Lord Mayor on ceremonial duties with reference to the forces, such as Memorial Day and the Trafalgar Parade. Both teens say they aspire to join the Royal Navy when they have completed their academic qualifications and their father, Tariq Mahmood, says he is delighted to see them progress in the Bradford Sea Cadets. “We are very proud parents at the moment because of what our boys have accomplished,” he said. “The appointment of Lord Mayor’s Sea Cadet is a real honour and extra special because they do come from an Asian family. “I was a Sea Cadet 20 or so years ago but never joined the forces. Both
Abbas and Ummar say they are looking to join the Royal Navy but not until they have a good education to fall back on.” Abbas, who attends Dixons Allerton Academy, has already shown his charitable side, raising money for the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and assisting with the Race for Life in Lister Park. His new position will see him become a role model to some of the younger members and that is something which Mr Mahmood says is something his son will take great pride in. Abbas received a badge of office from the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, at the ceremony. Meanwhile, the Lord Mayor was also welcomed as patron of the Bradford Sea Cadets, with Sir James Hill named as President. There were also 40 certificates handed out during the event to all the cadets who had completed their water-based week of activities in Northamptonshire last month.
• My landlord has indicated he wants me to vacate the property. How much notice am I entitled to from my landlord? The notice period depends on which ground(s) the landlord seeks to rely upon. The notice must contain specific information and provide you with a clear date by which you are expected to vacate the property. Please contact us and we will advise further. • What is a ‘tenancy deposit scheme’? The landlord must put a tenant’s deposit in a government-backed tenancy deposit scheme if you rent your home on an assured shorthold tenancy that started after 6 April 2007. The deposit will be registered and returned to the tenant at the end of the tenancy provided certain conditions are met.
• What is the court procedure for evicting a tenant? Court action can be taken to evict the tenant at any time after the end of the notice period if the notified tenant fails to leave by the end of the notice period, stating which ground you are seeking possession. There is a special court procedure landlords can use if they are reclaiming possession of a property after the service of a Section 21 notice and there is generally no need for a court hearing. This is called the ‘accelerated procedure’, which will normally take about 8-10 weeks. In any event the court can make a possession order ordering eviction of the property provided you have proved the ground you rely on and it is reasonable to do so in all the circumstances. Contact us to discuss further.

Furniture for all Furniture from one of West Yorkshire’s top educational establishments is about to set sail around the world as it is put to use in deprived schools in Pakistan. Following the closure of Bradford College’s McMillan building, a host of furnishings, ranging from tables and chairs to drawers, have been collected from inside the building and heaved onto a lorry earlier this week. The haul was then sent on its way in what was the latest of the 160-plus containers set to arrive in South Asia in the near future. Wednesday’s project saw the college work alongside Rehabilitation Response and Bradford Rotary Club to organise the lorry-load of goods with 15 colleagues from removal firm, Business Moves Group, on hand for some of the heavy lifting. After an exhausting process, the furniture was sent off to a small town called Chiniot, in North Pakistan. Dr Amjad Shaikh, from Rehabilitation Response, is now appealing for computer donations in an attempt to provide better education for some of Pakistan’s most deprived children. “The furniture is going to a

With vast redevelopments currently being undertaken at Bradford College, the closing down of their old buildings means that more than 160 containers have been sent to Pakistan and will continue to be sent over the upcoming months. Ian Fox, Project Officer at Bradford College said the establishment was more than happy to help with the initiative. He said: “Although we are lucky to be undergoing so many redevelopments at the college, we must remember that schools in these less developed countries have very little and it really is LOADING: Bradford pleasing to know our Rotary Club representative, old furniture is going Geoff Toothill to good use.”

25,000 miles, 33 countries, two wheels, one man The extraordinary journey of Imran Mughal
ADVENTURE: Imran Mughal spent more than a year on the road with his bike as he travelled around the world
Asian Elite UK Our site provides the facility for meeting prospective partners for the purpose of marriage and is the most trusted matrimonial agency around. Our aim is to make your life as easy and comfortable as possible while helping you to find that special person. We offer introduction marriage services for Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Christian marriages. We also cater for non-Asian, White/Caucasian individuals seeking an Asian partner in the United Kingdom. We make thorough checks and are very selective in accepting members. This service is for professionals based in the UK only.
15 months ago, a cycling enthusiast from Leeds embarked on an epic journey around the world, and to make things that little bit more interesting, he did it all on a bike. 35-year-old Imran Mughal completed the 25,000 mile route, through four different continents, tackling every obstacle from tough terrain in the outback to gunshots in Bosnia. After being made redundant from his job with the NHS, he decided to take on the challenge and helped raise thousands of pounds for Charity:Water, even paying a visit to the HQ in New York during his trip. Documenting his incredible journey through social media, Imran visited landmarks in all corners of the world from the Taj Mahal in India, through to Mount Rushmore in the United States. The journeyman set off in May last year, and finally returned home to a warm welcome from family and friends on Saturday 2nd August. He has now been settling back into life in the UK and spoke to the Asian Express about his remarkable trip. “It has been an o v e r w h e l m i n g experience and was initially just a dream for me a couple of years ago so to see it come true is incredible,” he said. “I have done long cycles before through Europe and down Route 66 in America but this has to be the most rewarding and amazing experience. “It makes you realise what is important in life and what isn’t. It humbles you to the core and filters you as you travel around the world.” Imran says he believes he is the first Pakistani and first Muslim to do the challenge and broke the record for distance covered on just two tyres. In total, 33 countries were visited with some taking just a week to cycle through and others over a month. Most travel arrangements were
organised in advance so visas and passports were predominantly not an issue until Imran arrived at the Georgian border. “Initially I was denied entry to Georgia despite having a passport,” he said. “I came back eight hours later and approached the same people with a new plan, still with my legal legislation in hand. “I faced barriers of discrimination and broke them down through card magic and clever diplomatic talking. It just showed that their border was a complete farce because they let me through because of some magic.” Each country brought with it

inside but we needed to get inside so just set up for the night there. “A little while later we heard this car engine outside and thought it was just going to fly past but we heard it come to a stop and the handbrake put on right outside the house. It scared the life out of me. “We hit the lights and got down, and the guy starts shouting. We didn’t really respond and then all of a sudden he fired a shot into the wall blindly.

highlights yet Imran says there is one nation which stands out above the rest. He continued: “Without doubt my favourite country was Iran. It is marred with negativity yet I had heard many good accounts from travellers who went through the country before. “When I arrived, the hospitality was overwhelming. When you arrive in that country as a traveller you are seen as a gift from God. They cannot do enough for you.” Every night, Imran slept in different conditions, relying often on his tent carried on his bicycle. One night he was put up in a luxury mansion in Croatia and another he was being shot at in Bosnia. He explained: “One night we were cycling through this remote part of Bosnia and we needed some shelter. “At some point down this empty road we came across an abandoned house which only had hay and dried cowpat
“We were just shouting ‘tourists’, ‘we are tourists’, which eventually they understood and insisted we could stay but we got out of there as soon as we could.” Imran finally completed his journey earlier this month but ensured there was one last extraordinary feat he completed before returning to Leeds – he tackled a thief. In Etampes, France, the returning cyclist saw a thief snatch a lady’s purse. Imran chased him down on his bike and even managed to reunite the victim with her belongings. The Roundhay resident is now planning on writing a book to share his experiences with the world. He can still be sponsored at www.mycharitywater.org/cycling theworld As for his next challenge, he says a cycle to Mecca in the next couple of years could be on the cards.

Decline of the sugar rush
‘Candy Crush' shares on a downer for phone app developers
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
It seems that those with a ‘gaming sweet tooth’ for the ‘Candy Crush Saga’ game, may be at the end of their sugar rush enjoyment. Social and mobile game company King Digital Entertainment Plc have reported a lower-than-expected second-quarter revenue, as gamers continued to spend less
money on its ‘Candy Crush Saga’ game. Its shares have slipped 22 percent on the New York Stock Exchange. The company, which went public in March this year, said it has reduced its 2014 forecast and expects gross bookings in the range of $2.25 billion to $2.35 billion from its previous estimate of $2.55 billion to $2.65 billion. Investors are now worried that unless King delivers a set of consistent and long-lasting hits,
apart from ‘Candy Crush Saga,’ it might suffer the same fate as ‘Farmville’ maker Zynga Inc and ‘Angry Birds’ developer Rovio Corp, which are struggling to retain players. King has yet to see its other titles such as ‘Farm Heroes Saga’ and ‘Bubble Witch 2 Saga’ fully offset user losses of its ‘Candy Crush Saga’ puzzler game that accounted for about 60 percent of second-quarter gross bookings. A ‘Candy Crush’ sister title is
soon to be launched, which King hopes will give more longevity to that title. The company has also acquired Singapore-based mobile game studio Nonstop Games for $6 million in cash upfront, and would pay $74 million over a four-year period if it reached certain revenue targets. Certain employees of Nonstop, which recently released strategy game ‘Heroes of Honor - War of Kings’ for iOS devices, were given $10 million upfront.

SPORTS: A range of activities are held throughout the two weeks from games to cooking lessons
Youngsters take on constabulary challenge By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
This year’s West Yorkshire Police Summer Camp has been a summer sell out with new partners and new activities added to an already packed programme. The police-led camp at Bradford College, began on Monday 11th August and will see 600 nine to 15-yearolds from the Bradford district enjoy a range of activities and interactive demonstrations over two fun-filled weeks. New attractions for this year include a visit to police training facilities at Carr Gate in Wakefield and team building exercises courtesy of the Army. There are also cooking sessions with Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food, an Xbox Arcade and dance sessions, as well as the chance to
engage with police officers and other emergency services through interactive demonstrations. Bradford University has also joined the programme to offer educational inputs whilst working alongside the police. Bradford College lecturer Nosheen Qamer, who also forms part of the management team, said she had been looking forward to the activities getting underway. “The college is proud to be part of this project and our work with the police and partners continues to have a positive impact on Bradford. “Taking part in the summer camp allows the youngsters to develop skills that will help them apply for jobs in the future. It also encourages them to start thinking of what they would like to do after their GCSEs.”
PC Chris Cahill, who plays a key role in organising the event, added: “The management team and our partners have yet again worked their socks off to create a fantastic programme of two weeks of fun, sporty and educational activities to suit all ages. “We would also like to welcome our new partners on board and hope that they will find the camp a thoroughly worthwhile experience. “It is important to give young people something to do in the summer holidays, as low level crime and antisocial behaviour can tend to peak during these times. “Working with young people in this setting allows us to develop a relationship with our communities and promote trust and confidence in neighbourhood policing. It's a win-win for everyone.”
SERVICES: Police officers, and representatives from other emergency services across West Yorkshire, are on hand to provide interactive demonstrations

SupportMan to help tackle painful knees during prayer
Religious ‘support’ Ten years ago, a Muslim doctor operating out of Bradford suffered a serious knee injury meaning he could no longer pray without feeling pain. After ‘putting up’ with the condition for a couple of years, Dr Sulleman Moreea decided it was time to do something to combat his issue and so the ‘SupportMan’ was created. A piece of soft, lightweight foam which is put underneath a person during prayer, the device helps alleviate the pressure from a person’s knees during prayer rituals. Developed by Dr Moreea and a professional foam maker in Mauritius, the product has enabled the Leeds resident to pray comfortably for the past four years. Dr Moreea explained: “It all stemmed from an injury I got whilst playing football, when I got a cruciate ligament tear and needed two screws in my left knee. “Thereafter I damaged cartilage in my right knee and required further operations, which ultimately meant that it was very painful for me during prayer. “Islam allows for people to use a chair in the mosque but I felt I
was a bit too young for that and I still wanted to pray normally. “The SupportMan has allowed me to pray on my knees again without pain.” The doctor, and Micha Sayed, owner of the foam factory Plyfoam, are now sharing the invention with mosques across Bradford in hope of helping more people find comfort during their prayers. With its lightweight material making it easily transportable and its durable surface meaning it will never need replacing, the device is ideal for all ages. “A little while back I was speaking with my friend who developed the device and he said ‘you’ve found benefit from this, why not share it with others?’” Dr Moreea added. “So now we are taking these SupportMan products into mosques across the city and dropping them off in hope of helping more people, like me, who struggle with praying on the floor.” Mr Sayed whose factory runs in Mauritius, and was the key designer behind the SupportMan. He explained further why it was important to ensure the device is able to be used by all Muslims.
“My friend, Dr Moreea, came to me with his problem and said he needed a product which could help take the pressure away from his knees,” he said. “From there we went through some design ideas and soon had an initial prototype which did the job just fine. “But, as time went by, we decided that it needed to have other properties which would make it suitable for everybody. “That is why we developed the lightweight design, which is comfortable and durable.” The devices have so far been delivered to Bradford’s Osmania mosque, Quba mosque and Abu Bakar mosque. If you would like to find out more about the SupportMan please visit www.plyfoam.mu or call into Sahara Pharmacy on Duckworth Lane.

Boycotting big brands
FORCE: Police were on hand to ensure the protest remained peaceful and handed out documents to explain the rules, some of which customers claim were not being followed
By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
Last week we ran the story about a boycott awareness campaign outside a Bradford McDonalds which had been met with some scrutiny after members of the public claimed they were ‘intimidated not informed’ by protestors. Groups have been gathering outside the establishments in recent weeks in an attempt to get others to boycott the fast food giants due to their alleged ties with Israel. Support has been received in the bountiful with statistics showing a clear downward trend in McDonalds share prices since last month, primarily due to the brands expired meat scandal across the chain in China. Yet, in what was supposed to be an awareness project, members of some groups have been called ‘intimidating’ at times by some customers who have visited the sites. One incident involved a mother with her eight-year-old daughter. The pair drove in to the McDonald’s, in Thornbury, for a milkshake and found themselves surrounded by a group of around 20 men and boys. They hurled abuse at them and held a megaphone in the child’s face and told her to ‘burn in hell’ and ‘go to hell’ for buying from the eatery. The mother of the child said: “I agree that campaigning makes a difference, and if people want to boycott a brand, that’s absolutely their prerogative. If they want to spread their message, it should be with distribution of factual information so as to convince – not by screaming and shouting
at people. “I’d like to know how they’d react if someone screamed and hurled abuse in their innocent child’s face, telling them they’re going to go to hell – they’d probably rip their heads off.” The aggressive incident has been slammed by a huge number of the boycott McDonald’s and Tesco campaigners, saying that the scenario witnessed by the mother and child should never have happened and that the issue would have to be addressed. This has given rise to the question of how to avoid a peaceful campaign from turning into a violent one. A former campaigner calling for the boycott of Tesco said: “It’s a shame how a small group of irrational and idiotic people can ruin all the hard work of campaigners who’ve worked constructively and peacefully to inform people about proIsraeli brands. “Because it was getting out of control with a small group chanting curses and swearing at patrons, I’m sorry to say that I have had to quit. I don’t want to be affiliated with violence and swearing at random people.” Most supporters of the boycott campaigns have stated that the cursing and chanting should be brushed aside as it is nothing compared to the plight of the Palestinian people. One Facebook user said that the mother of the child should have thought better than to go buy a McDonalds. What do you think? We’d love to have your comments. Email: comments@asianexpress.co.uk

Actor’s death should be catalyst to seek support
TRAGIC: Robin Williams was found dead at his home on Monday evening and had been battling with depression
‘Don’t face it alone’
The tragic passing of Robin Williams is a stark reminder that we need to take seriously the issue of mental health and well being says Mohammad Shabbir CEO of Sharing Voices Bradford. “Robin Williams was one of the most outstanding entertainers of certainly my generation. His sense of humour and acting ability will be sorely missed, however his untimely death highlights that depression can be very difficult and painful experience for people to deal with and therefore seeking support is very important.” According to mental health foundation, one in four people experience some sort of mental health issues during a year; women are more likely to experience issues; whilst 20 per cent of older people experience depression. Mr Shabbir added that a number of factors in society today are also causing an increase in similar conditions. He continued: “The current experience in the down turn in the economy coupled with changes in how benefits entitlements are worked out and indeed what is available to people is pushing people to stressful and difficult lives.” The increased pressure on families, either through lack of employment and or uncertainty about income, puts increased pressure on families. In situations of distress either financial, family oriented, bereavement, domestic or sexual violence it is important for people to get support so that they can be
supported to recovery. “Mental health and well being issues affect all of us and so Sharing Voices Bradford offers a service that listens to peoples’ stories of how they are feeling, we then support people through a befriending model,” Mr Shabbir said. “At the same time we support people to navigate services available through their GP and or mental health services.” Along with one-ones befriending support, group work and a range of other activities Sharing Voices also offers referring support, advocacy and bespoke psychological services targeting specific BME communities. Sharing Voices Bradford launched the Ihsaan project for Muslim patients with an adapted therapy that takes into account the culture, spirituality and faith of Muslim communities. “People can access our services through their GP or by direct referrals and can be rest assured that SVB provides a professional and confidential service for men, women, young and older people from all Black minority ethnic backgrounds,” he added. “In conclusion I’d like to say to people not to deal with the issues alone, if you’re not feeling well and need support then please get in touch.” Anyone living with anxiety, depression, mental illness or are concerned about their well being can call sharing Voices on 01274 731 166 and or call their GP practice for more information.

Food for all at Eid More than 250 people from all walks of life came together last month for a special Eid celebration in the heart of Bradford. The inaugural Curry Circle Eid party was a huge success with service users heading down to the Carlisle Business Centre to dine alongside volunteers, business owners and several faith representatives. Members of the Hindu, Muslim, Baha’i, Sikh, Jewish, Buddhist and Christian community were all in attendance to break bread together and learn about the true meaning of Eid. Bana Gora, Chief Executive of the Muslim Women’s Council which runs the Curry Circle every Thursday, was delighted with the success of the day and explained why it had been setup. “Over Ramadan we had a number of volunteers keeping their fast and a number of service users asking questions about the Islamic month and Eid,” she said.
Curry Circle brings people together to talk over food
“That’s really where the idea for the Eid celebration came from, where we could share the meaning of Eid and what this time means to a Muslim, with people of different faiths and backgrounds. “There were a lot of misconceptions about what people did in Eid and it was a great way to communicate.” Several business owners were amongst the list of guests on the day who got to witness directly the work of which the Curry Circle does. Food on the day was sponsored by MyLahore and Aziz Catering,
and Ms Gora added that it would be great to get more support from new businesses. “When you bring people together over food they will talk,” she said. “People can sponsor something like the Curry Circle very easily but by physically coming out to this space, eating food together, and more importantly conversing together, they can see how their money is actually impacting others’ lives. “It gives you that human face which a lot of people don’t see on a daily basis and also makes you realise how fortunate you are.”

Sheffield Murder Detectives investigating the death of a woman in Sheffield last weekend have charged a man with her murder. The body of Anayat Bibi, 39, was found at a property in Vickers Road, Firth Park, Sheffield, by police officers at around 11.35am on Sunday 10th August. Four days later, on Thursday 14th August, 42-year-old Mazhar Nawab was charged with the murder of Ms Bibi and appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court the following day. Nawab, also of Vicker Road in Firth Park, Sheffield, is the latest individual to be arrested in the ongoing investigation. An 83-year-old man and a 20-year-old man remain on police bail in connection with the incident. A post mortem examination concluded that the cause of death was multiple stab wounds.
Killer’s uncle to appear before magistrates GUILTY: Danish Irfan was jailed for a minimum of 16 years last month for the murder of Ridda Zanab in November 2013
An uncle of convicted murderer Danish Irfan has been charged with perverting the court of justice as his nephew fled to Pakistan. 32-year-old Nouman Qureshi, of Kashmir Park, Halifax, will appear before magistrates later this month, along with two other men, charged with the offence. Qureshi, alongside Muhammed Qureshi, of Pembroke Avenue, Luton, and Faisal Choudhary, of Grantham Road, Ilford, were arrested at various locations back in April. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman provided the following statement: “We have charged three people with perverting the course of justice, in relation to Danish Irfan escaping the country. “They will be appearing before magistrates later this month.” Irfan was handed a 16-year prison sentence last month after being convicted of the murder of his 21-year-old wife, Ridda Zanab, in November 2013. He initially fled to Pakistan with a fake passport, under the name Abdul Basit, following the crime yet returned to face the charges, admitting manslaughter but denying murder. The court heard how the 22year-old Lidget Green resident found out that his wife was in love with another man and proceeded to strike her at least ten times with a claw hammer which resulted in Mrs Zanab’s skull shattering.
Safety First Police in Rotherham have set up a dedicated policing operation for the town centre, committed to tackling crime and disorder as well as improving the public’s perception of crime in the area. Responding to concerns from the general public that they felt unsafe in the town centre, officers created a multifaceted operation intended to prevent and detect crime. This includes targeted,
regular patrols of identified problem locations. The patrols are both overt and covert, and are led by intelligence gathered by officers on the ground, reports from the public, and information from partner agencies. Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth said: “We’re aware that there is a perception, particularly among the young teens and elderly members of our community, that Rotherham town centre is not a
safe place to visit. “Our targeted operation is designed specifically to combat those fears, identifying individuals that engage in criminal activity and taking robust action to get them off our streets. “The patrols are a key part of this strategy – even though you may not see a police officer, there may be one or more around you, monitoring identified problem areas and gathering intelligence.” Frequent days of action are also planned by the Safer Neighbourhood Team to target specific issues in the area, like shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.

College students celebrate A-Level success Students at Bradford College were celebrating earlier this week as they recieved their A-Level results. A third of all students at the College achieved a grade B or better with 97 per cent of students from the Centre for Academic Studies receiving an overall pass - two per cent greater than last year, with 68 A* or A grades being awarded. Students were at the College’s Trinity Green Campus to collect their results and celebrate their individual success, as well as that of their friends, along with their tutors and College staff. Ripping open his results, star student John Quan’s smile said it all as he informed friends he had achieved an A* for Biology, Maths and Physics and an A in Chemistry. John can now realise his ambition to study Medicine at Cambridge University. For the first time since Tommy Robinson left his position as leader of the English Defence League (EDL), the far-right group returned to Batley last weekend. Most businesses continued to operate as usual with a large police presence drafted in from across Yorkshire, Humberside and beyond to oversee proceedings. Around 350 people attended on behalf of the EDL group whilst anti-fascist supporters also turned out on the day, including no more than 60 representatives from a group calling themselves ‘We are Batley’. Superintendent Ged McManus of Kirklees Police, said he wanted to pay his thanks to the people of Batley for the way they conducted themselves through the day which resulted in no arrests. He said: “The events have passed off with very few issues and that has been helped by the behaviour of local residents who have not got involved and left managing the events to the police and colleagues at Kirklees Council. “Demonstrators have the right to protest and we have to facilitate that right, but both the police and council have worked hard to minimise disruption to residents. “Keeping everyone safe and then allowing the town to quickly return to normal has been our top priority.” Councillor Peter O’Neil, Kirklees Council, Cabinet Member for Communities added: “Kirklees Council staff have worked closely in partnership with local communities, businesses, and police to keep Batley safe and open for business as usual today. “Everyone has done a great job – thank you for all your hard work and support.” The freedom to march peacefully is a right all parties are entitled to yet some people on social media were less eager to praise the event despite its peaceful outcome. One person on Twitter wrote: “Good luck to all anti-fascists confronting the EDL in #Batley today. Show them they're not welcome anywhere they go,” whilst another added: “EDL apparently decided to have their national rally in Batley today...I hope anyone there ignored them and went elsewhere instead.”

Zurich Safe Deposits
I
n a day and age where protecting your valuable possessions is paramount and banks fail to offer a solution, Zurich Safe Deposits is on hand to provide you with complete peace of mind. Operating from Bradford,
having taken over an existing Bank, the business provides the greatest protection for all your sentimental and priceless belongings with the most sophisticated security system around. With 24-hour CCTV
monitoring, state-of-the-art alarm system, bulletproof glass, fingerprint and face recognition technology, as well as motion and drill sensors, the premises are all but impenetrable at any given time. The actual safe deposit box is held in a time-lock, Grade 10 vault, and requires two individual keys to open – one unique key which only the client has, and a master key which only the Zurich guards possess. Without both keys, you can be sure that nothing is going in or out of the box. Once finally opened, clients are taken to a private viewing room, located within the vault, where they are able to access their box in complete confidentiality, so only they know what is inside. From 6pm every weekday, and 4pm in the weekend, the impassable time locked vault cannot be opened until the
following morning. Open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, Zurich Safe are able to provide unlimited access for you to your belongings with no appointments required to access your boxes. Prices for the safe deposit boxes start from just £160 for a small box, whilst medium and large storage is charged at £200 and £250 respectably. £10,000 worth of insurance is provided free as standard upon the purchase of a safety box and can be increased to as much as £100,000 for a small fee. Insurance is fully comprehensive and underwritten by Lloyds of London. Even ‘wear insurance’ is available which gives clients the chance to take valuables, such as jewellery, out of their safety deposit box, use them, and still be covered. Quick quotes are available
within the click of a button online and if purchased, can bring down home insurance fees for customers as well. Typical items stored are jewellery, gold, cash, passports, documents or anything that is valuable to you and fits in your safe box. Zurich Safe is regulated by the Safe Deposit Association (SDA) and regulated through their insurance with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Banks across the country are currently closing down many of their safe deposit amenities, whilst others possess year-long waiting lists. Yorkshire’s only independent safe deposit vault, Zurich Safe, is now offering this service to all, meaning clients no longer have to risk keeping their valuables at home. But hurry, there is only a limited number of safe deposit boxes available so make sure you reserve yours soon.

Footwear for every person Give us a break
I
n a previous article we looked at the case of Marks & Spencer Plc –v- BNP Paribas Securities Services Trust Company (Jersey) Limited where the High Court decided that Marks & Spencer (“M&S”) was entitled to a refund of the rent which it had paid for the period after it had exercised the break option in its lease. By way of a recap, M&S’s lease contained a break clause which allowed the lease to be brought to an end early. However, under the terms of the lease, the rent was payable in advance on the usual quarter days but the date specified for the exercise of the break clause was in the middle of a quarter. The break clause could therefore only be exercised if M&S paid the full quarter’s rent in addition to paying a penalty which was equivalent to a year’s rent to its landlord. M&S duly paid these sums and exercised the break option. Once the lease was terminated, M&S sought and the High Court agreed, that it was entitled to a refund of the overpaid rent on the basis that, although the lease did not contain an express provision entitling M&S to a refund, there was an implied term in the lease that obliged the landlord to refund the overpaid rent. The case went against the conventionally held view that tenants would only be entitled to a refund of overpaid rent if there was an express provision in the lease allowing for that. The Court of Appeal has now overturned the High Court’s decision. The Court of Appeal considered the wording in the lease and concluded that there was no implied term contained in the lease that required the landlord to refund any overpayment to M&S. It found insufficient evidence in the lease
to support the High Court’s finding that the parties had intended M&S to recover any overpayment. In the Appeal Court’s view, the landlord and M&S had intended for any loss for the period post-break to fall with M&S. The Court of Appeal said a term should only be implied where it was necessary to achieve the objectives of the parties. In this case, no implied terms were necessary as the parties could have included an express clause in the lease requiring the landlord to repay any sums relating to the period after the break date - but they chose not to - and further, M&S was fully aware when entering into the lease that it would have to pay a full quarter’s rent to exercise the break option. Although the Court of Appeal has refused leave for M&S to appeal further, it still has the option to seek leave to appeal directly from the Supreme Court and, therefore, this decision may (still) not be the end of this saga. This decision is good news for landlords but bad news for tenants with break dates that fall part-way through a quarter and where there is no express provision for repayment. For many, this decision restores the widely accepted view that, in the absence of an express provision, tenants cannot claim refunds for rent paid in advance for the period following the lease coming to an end pursuant to a break clause. Parties entering into leases should seek legal advice to ensure that they fully understand their respective obligations under the lease and that it contains the relevant provisions to provide them with any protection that they require. Blacks can assist with the preparation of or dealing with any disputes arising from leases.

T
he new chairman of the Legal Services Board, Sir Michal Pitt, recently commented that the legal market is ‘far too intimidating, too uniform and, in many cases, too expensive’. Are solicitors still viewed as wearing stuffy suits, sat in dim offices surrounded by cobwebbed books and charging astronomical fees? – Sounds a little like a Dickens novel. Here at Pudsey Legal we tend to agree with Sir Michael and this is why we try to do things a little differently. We hope we’re not too intimidating (we do smile occasionally.) We believe in helping our community where we can with our support for various local clubs and making regular appearances at local events (next stop Calverley Carnival.) Our work with Pudsey Live at Home scheme and Crawshaw School has been particularly rewarding and enjoyable - it gets us away from our desks. We’re sure you’d agree that our branding is certainly not uniform in the legal world and the many positive comments we get about our knitted theme seems to indicate you like it. However one area we take very seriously is our approach to legal fees. We believe quality legal advice should be a resource everyone can access. The thought of a large legal bill can be daunting and maybe the fear of this is why some put off dealing with their legal issues. To help with this, we have introduced a range of fixed prices on many of our services including Wills & Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Conveyancing and Family & Mediation law. This gives you peace of mind in knowing that the price you are quoted at the start will be the price you pay at the end with no nasty surprises. Full details are available on our website www.pudseylegal.com Call us to arrange an appointment to discuss your legal problems – we don’t bite and the kettles always on.

British support for the Yazidis Britain will boost its support for 12,000 Yazidi refugees who have escaped from Mount Sinjar and made it to a refugee camp across the Syrian border, International Development Secretary Justine Greening has announced. The Department for International Development (DFID) is providing funding for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to provide a month’s worth of water and
medicine for the refugees. British funding for other aid agencies working in the Newroz refugee camp will support the distribution of hygiene kits to almost 4,000 men, women and children, ensuring refugees stay healthy and reducing the spread of disease. A few weeks ago Newroz camp, in north-eastern Syria, was home to just 20 Syrian families displaced by the conflict in their country. But over
the past week the IRC has been providing medical care and essential items to 12,000 people who have fled the mountain. The Yazidi refugees walked up to 60km before reaching the camp, facing temperatures of up to 50 degrees and without water. To prevent refugees dying the IRC has distributed 90,000 litres of water and 600 jerry cans.

‘Save Our Surgeries’ campaign By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
MPs Rushanara Ali and Jim Fitzpatrick alongside campaigners from the ‘Save Our Surgeries’ campaign hand delivered a 20,000-strong petition to 10 Downing Street last week. The campaign was set up by GPs and patients - in response to Government plans to phase out funding, known as the 'minimum practice income guarantee' (MPIG) for GP surgeries across the UK. In 2004 the government changed the funding formula for GP surgeries and many say that it didn't take account of the fact
that in deprived areas people have higher health needs. Many practices would have gone bankrupt, so they introduced MPIG to stop practices falling below their previous level of income. Now the government is taking away the MPIG and many practices are threatened with bankruptcy again. The concern here is that good quality healthcare practices will be replaced by GP surgeries run by large private firms on the cheap, which compromises community health. Although the Government has so far failed to publish the names of the threatened surgeries, it is known that 22 serve communities

20,000-strong petition delivered to 10 Downing Street to stop GP Surgeries from closing down across London across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. Five are known to be in Tower Hamlets alone. The petition calls on the Government to ‘fund general practices fairly, and reverse the effects of your decision to withdraw the MPIG, and to change the funding formula to take account of the effects of deprivation, both inner city and rural so that all practices are fairly funded’.

Desperate Just six weeks to find a suitable donor to save toddler’s life To find out how you can help little Khalid, please go to blood cancer charities ‘Anthony Nolan’ and ‘Delete Blood Cancer UK’ at www.anthonynolan.org and www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk A 19-month-old toddler has just a few weeks to find a suitable donor for a life-saving transplant. Little Khalid Adam, from Coventry, has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - a rare form of blood cancer and has been placed on the bone marrow transplant list. Khalid was born a healthy baby in December 2012, but sadly, the family’s world collapsed when he suddenly came down with fever like symptoms at four months old.
Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the rare blood cancer. The toddler was given a fivemonth course of chemotherapy in June last year and returned home at the end of November 2013. “At the end of Khalid’s treatment, we were told that he had a 70 per cent chance of relapse,” says mum Tracy Kyberd. “We saw the 30 per cent chance he had of making it through and were so happy.
Time is limited because it is feared that Khalid’s tiny body may not be able to cope with the intense treatment needed to keep his cancer at bay. The devastating news of Khalid’s condition and his deteriorating health, including a hole in his heart from the chemotherapy, has left the poorly baby battling for his life and the family searching for a bone marrow donor. But Khalid is less likely to find a 100 per cent match because he is mixed race - his mum is white and his dad is Asian and there’s a huge under-representation of ethnic minorities on the donor register. Speaking to the Asian Express, Tracy broke down in tears as she told us how desperate the search is for a suitable match to save her son’s life. The family has launched an urgent appeal to members of the south Asian communities to come forward for testing and a 100 per cent match would give Khalid the best chance of beating his condition and going home to join his siblings - twins Alysha and Daniel, both aged nine. “I don’t know what to do and I know I have to be strong for the other children, but I see my “We celebrated Khalid’s beautiful son and what he’s going birthday at home and everything through and can’t help but to was going fine. No ‘soggy bottoms’ as Chetna heads to the kitchen
A Tasty Adventure An Indian-born fashion designer is to swap her needle and thread for oven gloves later this month as she prepares to compete for the crown in the Great British Bake Off. 35-year-old Chetna, who runs her own clothes label, moved to the UK in 2003 with her husband after attending university in Mumbai.
Kent has become home to the couple over the past decade and Chetna has now settled well in the area, even running a social curry club every week in her home town. Her passion for cooking has remained and will be showcased to the world from next week. She is described as a creative yet

Chetna will be competing against her fellow 11 contestants in this year’s Great British Bake Off which starts on 6th August on BBC One. Whilst the passionate designer had travelled a lot before, the transition from the hot to the cold weather, and from one of the most densely populated cities in the world to Kent, was a massive shock. Charged for possessing terrorist material An extremist from London has been found guilty of three out of four counts of possessing terrorist material and jailed for two years and seven months. 27-year-old Afsor Ali, of Bethnal Green, East London, attempted to flee the country after being caught with terrorist material on his computer and uploading a video to YouTube warning of a terror attack on the royal wedding, Following a trial at the Old Bailey on Tuesday 12th August, Ali was handed his sentence and also pleaded guilty to a bail offence by failing to attend a court in February. Judge Charles Wide QC told him he had made a ‘really
determined attempt’ to evade justice as he jailed him for 16 months for the passport offence and eight months for skipping bail to run concurrently. He also jailed him for a further 15 months for possessing terrorist material which included information from al Qaida on how to make a bomb and how to use an AK47 gun. The judge told Ali he had lied in his evidence when he tried to make the jury believe that while he was ‘radical and committed’ he was ‘not an extremist and did not support terrorism’. He said: “It is absolutely clear you are an extremist and you do support terrorism.”

Woman guilty over ‘cash in knickers’ Two ‘friends’ plot handed
A woman, who had faced charges of funding jihadists in Syria, has walked free from court whilst her friend and fellow defendant was found guilty of the offence. 27-year-old Nawal Msaad, had attempted to take a stash of 20,000 Euros in rolled up notes on a passenger flight from Heathrow to Istanbul as a ‘trusted courier’ for her friend Amal El-Wahabi. The latter’s husband had left the UK in July 2013 to pursue a jihadist cause in Syria and AlWahabi, 27, had attempted to fund his plans via smuggling cash on a plane. Msaad, of Holloway, London, was tasked with taking the cash through the departure gates yet the plan was scuppered when the stash, which had been hidden in a condom, fell out into her underwear. Both women denied the charge of making money available with reasonable cause to suspect that it would or may be used for the purpose of terrorism. Ears made from ribs
In a pioneering medical procedure, a nine-year-old boy in the UK who was born without any ears has had a pair created from his own ribs. Kieran Sorkin, from Hertfordshire, was born deaf and also had a rare condition which meant he did not have fully formed ears — just small lobes where his ears should be. Experts at the world renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) performed a six-hour operation last week where they used cartilage from his ribs to create a pair of ears and grafted them to his head. The procedure — primarily cosmetic but, thanks to several previous operations and a hearing aid, Kieran has gradually been able to hear. Without help he is still about 90 per cent deaf, but, when using hearing aids, he could ‘hear the wind blow and the birds tweet’, David Sorkin, his father, was quoted as saying by the Press Association.
Police search singer’s home
Police searched the apartment of Cliff Richard, one of Britain's bestknown entertainers, on Thursday in relation to allegations of a historical sexual offence involving an underage boy. They said they were searching a property in Berkshire, southwest of London, after receiving ‘an allegation of a sexual nature dating back to the 1980s involving a boy who was under the age of 16 at the time.’ Richard, 73, confirmed the property being searched was his and issued a statement denying the allegation. “For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online,” he said. "The allegations are completely false,” he added.
Nurseries labelled ‘extreme’ set to lose funding
RULING: Education Minister, Nicky Morgan, issued her first official announcement earlier this week as she explained her plan to rid pre-schools of any ‘extremist’ behaviour
Funding for early-years education providers could be withdrawn by councils if they believe the nurseries are guilty of having links with religious radicals. In an announcement made earlier this week, education minister, Nicky Morgan, presented the new powers to councils, which comes after a letter writing campaign by the British Humanist Association (BHA). Up to 450 members of the group had written to MPs in regard to a nursery funding consultation, raising initial concerns around
extremist and creationist teaching in some nurseries. The Department for Education described the new ruling as ‘a technical loophole’ being closed with Ms Morgan stressing the importance of children being taught ‘fundamental British values in an age-appropriate way’. “One of the most important roles of the education system is that it should prepare young people for life in modern Britain,” she said. “Public money should not be used to support any school or
early-years provider that does not support this aim because it seeks to promote ideas and teachings that run counter to fundamental British values,” she said. Despite the new ruling being praised by groups such as the BHA, others remain unconvinced that the issue is that prevalent and that the minister’s focus should be elsewhere. Deputy General Secretary for the National Union of Teachers, Kevin Courtney, says he had wished Ms Morgan began her term with something more constructive.
“It is disappointing that it is the notion of extremism which is the subject of the first major announcement of the new Secretary of State,” he said. “Early years and school staff already teach children right from wrong. “Asking Ofsted to inspect how well nurseries are teaching 'fundamental British values' does not appear to offer anything new for children and will concern all those who seek to promote community engagement.”

Beauty Top Tips How to achieve the best results from Waxing
One of the best ways to permanently remove hair is to opt for Laser Hair Removal where pulses of laser light destroy the hair follicle. However this can be a length & expensive process and in some cases it does not suit every individuals skin. For this reason, Waxing is one of the best ways of removing unwanted hair, and when done correctly can produce amazing results! Waxing effectively pulls the hair out from the root, therefore results last longer than some other methods of hair removal such as shaving which simply break the hair off at the surface of the skin. Depending on the individual and the area of the body, waxing can last for up to 6 weeks. Waxing also removes the top layer of dead skin cells so it also exfoliates leaving the skin brighter and smoother. Also after a prolonged period of continuous waxing, hairs reduce, become thinner and for some people stop growing permanently. Follow these tips to make sure you get the best results!
1) Make sure the treatment is carried out by a professional & qualified therapist as using the wrong techniques & products can cause hairs to break and produce less effective results which are no better than shaving. Hair can grow back after a couple of days due to using the wrong waxing technique!
City Centre Branch, Kirkgate (Next to McDonald’s) 14 Legrams Lane, Bradford BD7 1ND
2) Choose a wax that is suited to your skin type as this reduces irritation and protects your skin from having a negative reaction to waxing. At Prity- Hair, Beauty & Spa you can choose from four different types of wax specifically designed to work with different skin types to achieve optimum results!
3) Invest time into exfoliating your skin before & after waxing as this will remove dead skin cells making it easier for the wax to stick to the hairs and pull them out without breakage. This produces a smoother, softer finish and helps the results to last longer. 4) Keep your skin moisturised and hydrated as this reduces the appearance of ingrown hairs & red bumps on your skin in between waxing sessions.
5) Make sure to have regular waxing sessions to keep your skin looking smooth and hair free! As a rule of thumb:
- Eyebrows, Lip & Chin; every 2-3 weeks - Legs, arms & bikini; every 3-6 weeks
Choose from: Lemon Wax- Oily Skin, Strawberry Wax for Dry Skin, Rose Wax for Normal Skin & Blueberry for Sensitive Skin. Now available at either of our Bradford Branches!

‘Dress to impress’ taken to a whole new level
A textile tycoon from India has combined his work-life with his ‘true passion’ as he gifted himself a shirt made out of pure gold for his 45th birthday. Despite leaving school with no qualifications in his youth, Pankaj Parakh has become one of the most successful textile business owners in India with an empire worth millions. To celebrate his latest birthday, he commissioned the £127,000 shirt, weighing more than four kilos, to be made and proudly showed it off for the first time last week as he marched through the streets of his home in Yeola, 230km from Mumbai. Explaining why he had taken the decision to develop such an extravagant design, he said: “I
wanted to wear something special when I say my thanks for my success at a thanksgiving visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple of the Hindu elephant god in Mumbai. “I have always been fascinated with gold since I was five-years-old and studying in school. And over the years that interest has become a real passion. So it was logical that I would want to make my 45th birthday a golden affair. “In fact even on my wedding 23 years ago a lot of people said it was embarrassing that I was wearing more gold than my bride, but I just love the Royal metal.” He added: “I never go out with less than two to three kilos of gold jewellery.”
The shirt design has seven solid gold buttons and required a team of 20 workers to stitch it together over a two month period. Of course, if you are going to spend more than £100,000 on a shirt it has to be the best quality and this gold concoction certainly is. Only 18-22 carat gold has been used throughout yet the design of it has been so carefully developed that Mr Parakh claims it is as flexible and comfortable as a normal shirt. He said: “It is easily washed and can be hung up to dry just like a normal piece of clothing. It also has a lifetime guarantee come with it so that if it's torn or damaged it will quickly be repaired.”

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS The owner of a ferry which sank in Bangladesh earlier this month, resulting in the death of more than 110 people, is set to be investigated by authorities. A special anti-crime unit will take on the case in the country where shipping accidents, resulting in heavy losses of life, are becoming an unwanted familiar site. On Wednesday 4th August, a ferry with a maximum capacity of 85 passengers set sail with around 250 people onboard when it hit bad weather. The river, located around 30km south of the capital, Dhaka, had already begun to swell due to the monsoon rains and as a result the boat capsized and sank. Many on board had been returning to work in the capital after spending the Eid holiday at home in their villages with the water transport the quickest, and most cost-effective, route for many workers. After the capsize, 110 people were reported as being killed and now the owner, Abu Bakar Siddique, 60, alongside five other people, including the captain, face murder charges. They are being charged with overcrowding the vessel whilst also operating the ferry with an expired license and disregarding the river authority's instructions not to sail because of bad weather. Initially, Siddique went into hiding but was caught early on Wednesday in the port city of Chittagong. “Acting on a tip-off, he was arrested during a raid on a house,” Mufti Mahmud Khan, legal and media director of the interior ministry's elite anti-crime unit, the Rapid Action Battalion, told Reuters. About 48 bodies were recovered from the river but search operations were called off this week with at least 62 people still missing. Low-lying Bangladesh, with extensive inland waterways and slack safety standards, has an appalling record of ferry accidents, with casualties at times running into the hundreds.

Life Imprisonments Group sentenced for murder of officer PROTEST: Thousands of Bahraini Shi’ites gather near the capital of Manama to protest against the current regime
14 men have been ordered to spend the rest of their lives in jail after being found guilty of the killing of a policeman in Bahrain last year. The group were convicted for premeditated murder and intent to use violence against members of the security forces, as attacks on authority personnel in the country continue to rise.
Members of the group, upon their arrest in July, were also reportedly found guilty of possessing petrol bombs and explosives and taking part in an unauthorised demonstration near the capital Manama. State news agency, BNA, reported that the group had planned on committing violent acts during an anti-regime protest
and the officer had been killed when a device, inside a barricade erected by protestors, exploded. Speaking on Wednesday a BNA spokesperson said: “One of them planted an explosive device and prepared it for detonation. “They and others participated in group rioting in a public place with the purpose of committing crimes ... and they used violence to achieve that end ... and all of this was committed for terrorism purposes.” Attacks on security forces have been on the rise in the Gulf Arab country, which hosts the US Fifth Fleet, more than three years after authorities quelled Shi'ite Muslim-led protests against the Sunni-led government. Nevertheless, tens of Shi’ites continue to be handed long prison sentences for their involvement in similar protests against the Sunni Muslim Al-Khalifa dynasty that rules Bahrain. Bahraini Shi'ites, who make up the majority of the population, complain of political and economic marginalisation, an accusation the government denies. Since 2011, authorities have attempted to lower the crime level introducing the death penalty or life in jail for those found guilty in incidents where there were dead or wounded.
Tackling the toilets
In an effort to highlight the poor state of public toilets in India's commercial capital Mumbai, members of the unique campaign ‘Right to pee’ screened a 16minute film for the city's mayor Sunil Prabhu. The mayor has since promised to take action, says a Times of India report. The film exposes the pathetic condition of public toilets in the city which dissuades women from using them. The group of 35 organisations has been working since 2012 to convince the city
A costly climb Foreign mountaineers will have to spend more for the insurance cover of their Sherpa guides to climb any Himalayan peak in Nepal including Mount Everest, the government said. Wedged between India and China, Nepal is home to more than 1,300 Himalayan peaks - 414 of them, including Mount Everest, are open to foreign climbers who turn up in hundreds every year. An ice avalanche on Mount Everest in April killed 16 Sherpa guides in

They say women are being discriminated against as men are provided condoms. Toilets have been in the spotlight for some time now. Dipendra Paudel, a Tourism Ministry official, said the insurance cover for the guides would be raised to $15,000 from $10,000. Medical insurance for each guide has also been increased to $4,000 from $3,000. The new rates, to apply for all mountains including the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) Everest, will come into force from next month.

More confusion in Afghan elections
Afghan presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani cast fresh doubt over a deal to share power with his rival Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday, saying the accord was ambiguous and needed clarifying. Abdullah was the clear winner in the first round of Afghanistan's presidential election in April, while a preliminary count showed Ghani won the run-off vote in June. However, the ballot was marred by accusations of mass fraud, which in turn have fueled tensions between the rival camps, raising fears of a civil war
along ethnic lines. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has twice flown to Kabul to try to defuse the crisis and last Friday helped persuade the pair to sign a framework agreement for sharing power, including control over key economic and security institutions. Under the terms of the deal, the runner-up will be appointed to a specially created role of ‘chief executive’, who will share equal control with the president over certain key decisions, such as nominating the head of the army and intelligence agency.

Building collapse death toll rises
The death toll from the collapse of a six-story building under construction on the outskirts of Thailand's capital has risen to 10, with at least four more people trapped under the rubble feared dead, three days after the accident, police said on Thursday. The rescue teams found more bodies of construction workers, one of them a Cambodian, under the building near a local vocational college in Pathum Thani province after the collapse on
Monday. Smithi said there were about 30 to 40 workers in the area at the time of the accident and more than 20 people were rescued from the site. He said authorities feared that at least four workers who have been trapped under the ruins since Monday are dead. Police were investigating the cause of the collapse and have arrested four people, including the site's engineer, who will face criminal charges.
AWARD: Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor at Stanford University, was awarded one of the highest honours in mathematics as she was handed the Fields Medal
Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor at Stanford University in California, was among four Fields Medal recipients at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Seoul, and the first female among the 56 winners since the prize was established in 1936. “This is a great honour,” she said. “I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians. “I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years,” she said. Mirzakhani, 37, was born in Tehran and lived there until she began her doctorate work at Harvard University. She said she had dreamed of becoming a writer when she was young, but she pursued her enthusiasm for solving mathematical problems.
“It is fun – it's like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case. I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path,” she said. Mirzakhani was recognized for her work in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces, according to the Stanford site. The prizes are awarded every four years. Wednesday's prizes were presented by South Korean President Park Geunhye, the first woman to hold that post. The other three Fields Medal winners on Wednesday were Artur Avila of the National Center for Scientific Research in France and Brazil's National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics; Manjul Bhargava of Princeton University and Martin Hairer of the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

Accused ‘witch’ forced to eat faeces A middle-aged woman in India has been dragged out of her home, beaten, and forced to eat human faeces in what is the latest attack by a group of villagers who have been accusing women of witchcraft. The 35-year-old, from Bihar, was attacked on Tuesday whilst her husband was away, with the group blaming her for the death of a 30-year-old villager who had died through illness last week. There were 11 people involved in the assault, according to police, which took place in the lower caste community in Sakrail village. “The villagers dragged the woman out of her house and made her consume human excreta, blaming her for the death of the man,” Katihar sub-divisional police official Rakesh Kumar told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “The victim told us the accused persons branded her a witch and said it is because of her that everyone in the village was falling sick.” A 60-year-old man has been charged with physical assault and wrongful restraint
whilst police are still searching for 10 further suspects. The witchcraft case is just the latest in the field with a 22-year-old man, just last month, being arrested in the state of Odisha for the murder of a couple he believed were conducting witchcraft. He accused the 65-year-old man and his wife, 60, of being responsible for the deaths of his sister and two brothers who had died from various diseases over the previous three years. The practice of accusing people, mostly women, of being witches and assaulting or killing them is still common in some parts of India, particularly among tribal communities, although it is illegal. A United Nations official said last year that archaic practices such as lynching women accused of witchcraft, honour killings and dowry murders persisted in India because they remained socially acceptable. Government statistics show there were 160 cases of murder linked to witch hunts in 2013, and 119 in 2012.
As the number of people infected by the Ebola virus continues to rise, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that sufferers can be offered untested drugs in an attempt to hamper the outbreak. In Liberia, two infected doctors will be treated with the previously unproven medicine called ZMapp which has so far been given to a Spanish priest, who later died, and two US aid workers. As well as the danger of using unproven drugs, the scarcity of such medicine has also raised questions in West Africa about who gets priority access to the treatment. Since the first fatality last month, Ebola has become the world’s largest and deadliest outbreak with the UN agency declaring the situation an international health emergency. To date, more than 1,000 people have died, with the majority coming from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with a further two dying in Nigeria. The suffering has been exacerbated by health services that are struggling to cope whilst the WHO have appealed for funds and medical staff to help supplement care in one of the world’s most deprived areas. Trials of vaccines are currently taking place around the world yet some could take years to be tested fully and proved successful.

This includes learning how to save, building business plans, developing their own enterprises and learning how to network as well as building confidence, understanding girl’s rights and leadership skills. Priyanka met girls including Sadhana Chaudhari, who was discriminated against by her family and had to leave school early with limited skills. Sadhana, now 23 years old, runs her own tailoring business, and is setting up a group sanitary napkin business with other girls from her village. She has become a leader in the programme, or ‘Prerika’ as they are locally known, and is determined to pass what she has learnt onto other women in the community. Priyanka Chopra said: “Girls have the ability to transform their own lives, develop their own enterprises and help grow India’s economy. The Building Young Futures programme is giving them the vital skills and support they need to make this happen. “I met girls who have experienced incredible hardship in their lives and this has given them a voice and confidence, or ‘daring’ as they call it. “I strongly advocate that parents, caregivers and educators must give the girls more and more opportunities to grow in their lives.” In India, by 2015, the ‘Building Young Futures’ will have empowered around 100,000 girls and young women directly and another 200,000 girls through the programme. Ram Gopal, Chief Operating Officer, Barclays India, said: “We are able to empower these young women in India, teach them that they are equal to men, and help provide them with the skills they need to become economically empowered individuals. “The plan is to support five million young people in becoming the next generation of achievers.”

Stripped-out
racer Global debut of trackfocused McLaren GT 650S Coupe
McLaren GT has announced that the wraps are set to come off the track-only 650S Sprint at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The stripped-out racer will make its global debut alongside a number of other models from McLaren Automotive including the McLaren P1 GTR. Based on the recently launched McLaren 650S Coupe, the trackfocused 650S Sprint is fitted with
developments to the Brake Steer system, even more refined active aerodynamics and a race set-up for the ProActive Chassis Control (PCC). As with the 650S, the aerodynamically optimised design of the 650S Sprint offers a 3.8-litre twin-turbo M838T engine. In the 650S Sprint, the proven powerplant is retained from the 650S roadcar, with a unique engine and transmission calibration to further
enhance on-track drivability and driver engagement. The cabin is fully track-focused and stripped out to minimise weight, but with no compromise to driver safety or comfort. A lightweight carbon fibre racing seat, with full six-point harness, offers an optimised driving position, while an air-conditioning system is retained adding comfort. An integrated fire extinguisher system is also installed.
McLaren GT recently announced the 650S GT3 race-car, which will be seen on the grid from next season, and the 650S Sprint shares a number of design features with its bigger brother. The 650S Sprint has a lower ride height with recalibrated adaptive damping for revised spring rates, and sits on 19-inch centre-locking racing wheels, fitted with Pirelli slick or wet tyres, while an onboard air jacking system enables quick
tyre changes. Stopping power is also enhanced and provided by a race-prepared braking system developed for the 650S Sprint. This system allows for later braking into corners, but also improved brake feel and greater cornering speeds. The 650S Sprint will be priced at ÂŁ198,000, and available from all official McLaren retailers worldwide or direct from McLaren GT.

Dynamic enhancements Aston Martin have revealed details of a raft of important enhancements to two of the brand’s most popular and successful sports cars: the Vanquish ultimate GT and Rapide S four-door, four-seat, sports car. The luxury British brand is offering not only considerably enhanced performance and muchimproved fuel economy and emissions, but also an even more honed, precise and responsive driving experience. With the debut of the new Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic gearbox in both Vanquish and Rapide S for 15 Model Year (15MY), Aston Martin is improving every major area of the cars’ performance and fuel economy. The brand’s engineers have worked meticulously with technical partner, ZF, to develop the eightspeed technology and integrate it perfectly into the latest generation of the iconic and much-imitated Aston Martin VH architecture. The 0-60 mph times for both the Vanquish and Rapide S are reduced in 15MY cars: The Vanquish drops from 4.1 seconds to just 3.6 seconds (3.8 seconds 0-100 km/h) and the Rapide S is capable of the same sprint in only 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds 0-100 km/h) – also down by a full half second from its previous figure of 4.7 seconds. These impressive gains not only ensure the cars’ exceptional competitiveness in their respective sectors, but also confirm Vanquish as the quickest accelerating series production Aston Martin in the company’s 101-year history. Changes to gear and final drive ratios allow the cars to be not only
Aston Martin Vanquish and Rapide S get state-ofthe-art gearbox and new engine management system quicker but also more frugal, with reduced emissions too. In both sports cars the CO2 figure drops by an average of ten per cent – down to 298 g/km for Vanquish and 300 g/km for Rapide S. Economy is boosted to 31 mpg, on average an 11% improvement, on the EU’s extra urban cycle for both the Vanquish and the Rapide S under the same stringent test conditions. Combined with a revised final drive, the ratio changes also mean both cars are, for the first time, now capable of top speeds of 200 mph or above. A reduction in exhaust gas back pressure as a result of ratio adjustment and other changes also benefits peak power, which rises by up to three bhp to a peak of 568 bhp
(576 PS) in Vanquish, and two bhp, 552 bhp (560 PS), in Rapide S. Peak torque is up by 10 Nm, too, to 630 Nm at 5,500 rpm in all the cars. The new eight-speed Touchtronic III automatic gearbox is not only three per cent lighter than its predecessor, it is also packaged more efficiently occupying precisely the same space within the car yet adding two further ratios over the outgoing transmission. Touchtronic III delivers exceptional shift speed and moves between ratios as quick as 130 milliseconds – far quicker than even the most accomplished racing driver is capable of – while better gearbox efficiency allows more power and torque to be transmitted to the road more of the time.
Gearbox software changes make for a truly comprehensive selection of available driving features such as ‘Drive’ and ‘Drive Sport’ modes along with ‘Paddle Shift’ and ‘Paddle Shift Sport’ options for more engaging, sporting, shift control. Away from the gearbox, 15MY Aston Martin Vanquish and Rapide S models benefit from the addition of the latest Bosch Engine Management System. The new system, which delivers more precise engine control and seamlessly communicates with the new gearbox, receives its first application in an Aston Martin that combines the AM29 V12 engine and an automatic gearbox. Meanwhile other electronic and
engineering changes deliver a consistent GT character by perfectly aligning the chassis with improvements in powertrain performance and accessibility. Uprated dampers on the new Vanquish – 15% stiffer at the front and a full 35% stiffer at the rear – improve the dynamic characteristic of the car in line with its significantly enhanced performance. Rapide S, meanwhile, gets uprated larger front brakes. Both cars also benefit from a retuned brake booster and amended rear suspension bushes that are now 20% stiffer than before. There are also subtle but important styling enhancements, both inside and outside the cars, that add extra visual appeal for 15MY Vanquish and Rapide S. Outside there’s the arrival of new ten-spoke forged alloy wheel designs, available in a variety of finishes, that not only enhance the cars’ looks but save almost seven kilos in weight versus the standard wheel. There are also new paint colour options including, for the first time on Vanquish and Rapide S, the availability of the special paint colour Diavalo Red, previously limited to the breath-taking V12 Zagato. Inside, the cars get new leather trim colour options including the contemporary blue-black Dark Knight, and bold Fandango Pink. Rapide S also gains the exciting option of a new Duotone leather seat finish in Sahara Tan and Vibrant Red, as well as a range of new headlining options that mix quilting with the finest leathers or Alcantara.

New Toyota Supra Hybrid with BMW tech
SURPRISE: Toyota Supra is set to return as a plug-in hybrid sports car using BMW underpinnings
Many motoring enthusiasts will already be aware that the next Toyota Supra, which is based loosely on the FT-1 concept shown, is being developed in conjunction with BMW’s next Z car. The details of the new platform that are starting to emerge, however, may be a big surprise to some. That’s especially true of what’s likely to be found under the hood of the new
Supra: a 4-cylinder BMW engine. According to reports out of Japan and Australia, the new Supra is also, definitely, going to be a hybrid. Reports indicate that the new Supra’s BMW-developed, directinjection turbo-four will be paired with new “super conductor hybrid” technology from Toyota, making the flagship sports car a plug-in hybrid delivering upwards of 350 HP (260
kW) in a lightweight, rear wheel drive package. That relatively low output puts the next Toyota Supra in a performance class below the likes of the Chevy Corvette, Porsche 911, and Acura NSX that the nameplate once did battle with. That said, it’s also a full 30 HP more than the last Supra Turbo offered, which should make it a capable performer in its own right.

Tyson Fury and the ‘Gypsy Curse’
ON THE RISE: Moeen Ali has taken 20 wickets for England in just six matches and has proved a major hindrance for India in their test series with England
By Khalil Alam

Marvellous
Moeen By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Last year, Moeen Ali could not have dreamt that he would be England’s star spin bowler, yet after breaking into the side and storming his way through the wickets, the Worcestershire representative has done just that. Some fantastic performances against India have helped the 27-yearold become the fastest English spinner to take 20 wickets for the national side, featuring in just six matches across 58 days. Life had looked pretty bleak for England following the retirement of Graeme Swann with no person tipped to emulate the offspinner’s record on the field. The stage was set for an unlikely hero, and one man certainly answered the calls. From playing second fiddle at club level to taking over as the country’s lead spinner, Ali took 19 wickets in just four matches against India helping guide the side into a winning position after four games.
Spinner targets series win after impressive performances
The first two encounters resulted in a draw, followed up by a victory and despite some overall poor performances, Ali still picked up seven wickets in what was to be a preview of what was yet to come. In Southampton the spinner took eight wickets, including six for just 67 runs as India slumped to 178 all out. Ali says his recent form has helped him improve his confidence and with that comes better performances. “I took a lot of confidence from the Lord's game,” he said: “I felt like I bowled quite well in that match. “I try to bowl quicker, straighter and bowl tight so the quicker bowlers can rest up. Picking up wickets is nice and the natural variation I get, some balls spin and some don't spin, that has helped me. “The batsmen find it harder to
come down the wicket then, and I can cannon it through and create a situation to pick up a wicket.” Ali also insisted that his meteoric rise has not gone to his head and that he will just continue to work hard for his country. Speaking to the BBC after learning of his 20-wicket record, he added: “It is crazy. “I never thought of it. It is still early days in my career. It is a great feeling winning the game for your country twice in a row. “I have tried to stay as level as I can and not get too carried away. I practice hard and I feel it comes out on the field.” England’s final Test began on Friday as India travelled to the Oval to see if they could stop the somewhat unlikely force which is Moeen Ali.
In boxing, the most popular and recognised fighters in the world have competed in the heavyweight divison - for example Mike Tyson, and the man regarded by many as the greatest boxer of all time - Muhammad Ali. The major prizes in boxing for any young boxer is to one day become the world heavyweight champion of the world. Britain has previously produced its own sensational heavyweight boxing champions like Lennox Lewis, Herbie Hyde and Frank Bruno, but the last recognised British world heavyweight champion of the world seems like a distant past. However, recently there has been a new batch of British heavyweights that have set the boxing scene on fire, and have fanned the flames for interest in the British heavyweights. One such boxer is the charismatic, entertaining, talented and undefeated British champion Tyson Fury. Fury, the first recognised British champion with a gypsy background, has recently had to face his own demons and had to recover from the frustrations of inactivity and letdowns with consecutive and lucrative fights resulting in last minute cancellations. Fury was scheduled to fight in the final eliminator for the World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight title but instead was faced with a number of disappointments and then personal family problems that meant the fight could not take place. Fury, disappointed with his bad luck, has earned himself the reputation of being under the ‘Gypsy Curse’. The ‘Fury Gypsy Curse’ began last year when he was scheduled to fight the former heavyweight World Champion David Haye. This would have been the biggest pay day for Fury in his entire career and would prove vital to improving his world rankings. But that fight did not take place due to Haye suffering from a training injury to his shoulder. Fury was then unable to get any major fights for a number of months due to boxing politics, contract disputes and, according to him, the fact that he posed a significant challenge to other heavyweights and was seen as a risky fight for them. Most recently however, Fury was able to finally secure another major fight with British fighter Dereck Chisora and get
his boxing career back on track with the next fight (should he win) being scheduled against the current heavyweight World Champion Wladamir Klitschko. Fury’s opponent Dereck Chisora has fought many world champion fighters and has fought for the World Championship twice. Chisora has also fought Fury before that has resulted in a Fury win after the fight went the full twelve rounds. The Dereck Chisora v Tyson Fury fight was one week away and according to Fury the Gypsy Curse occured with Chisora injuring his hand one week prior to the fight taking place leaving Fury once again frustrated and without an opponent. There was then a late replacement for the injured Chisora and Fury was then scheduled to then fight Russian 6ft 9inch giant Alexander Ustinov. One day prior to Fury getting into the ring and fighting the Russian giant there was more bad news for Fury with his wife suffering from a miscarriage and then Fury’s uncle and first trainer Hughie Fury becoming seriously ill and hospitalised. The Fury fight against Ustinov also had to be cancelled. The Fury fight against Chisora has now been rescheduled to a new date of 22nd November 2014 and both fighters are hopeful that the fight will take place this time. Let’s hope the previous fight disappointments and family problems are over for Fury and the ‘Gypsy Curse’ that has followed him during his boxing career is truly over. Fury has promised to continue with his heavyweight boxing career despite his boxing frustrations and let downs and he is still hopeful that he can one day reach his ultimate goal and become the next British world heavyweight champion. We wish him luck!

A rising star
Youngster looks to break into Premier setup By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A junior footballer from Bradford is aiming to pave the way for more young Asian players to enter the sport as he continues his trials at a Premier League club. 13-year-old Tabish Hussain, from Heaton, currently plays for Bradford Park Avenue whilst also training with newly-promoted Burnley. The striker, who was offered a place at Barnsley’s academy previously, but turned the club down due to the impact it may have on his studies, has been playing for more than five years now. Despite being scouted a number of times by professional sides, the youngster has also seen his fair share of setbacks in his short playing career. After being approached by Bradford City scouts on no fewer than three different occasions, he has been unfortunate to never make the final cut, yet Tabish is now keen to tell others that it is important to ‘never give up’. “I am really enjoying it at Burnley so far and will just keep playing like I am to hopefully get a place in their side,” he said. “Obviously you can’t just have one knock back and stop playing. You just keep on going and make sure you come back a better player. “I was let go from Bradford but now I’m at Burnley so it goes to show that you should just keep going.” The Dixon’s City Academy pupil is not only a top performer on the field but also in the classroom as he prepares to begin Year Nine next month. He added that it was very important to focus on his schoolwork and prepare for a different career path should football not work out. “I know the most likely outcome for me is a job not as a footballer so I do try my hardest in school and do well,” he said. “It is something I think everybody should do because a good education is important.” Tabish’s father, Naeem, is a huge supporter of his son and believes he has got what it takes to make it to the top in a professional side. He has witnessed his son’s development on the pitch over the years and says he more than deserves a shot with a club’s academy.
“He is a very talented player and deserves the recognition he gets,” he said. “Unfortunately he wasn’t able to accept the place with Barnsley due to the possible impact on his school work – we would have been travelling there, on the four hour round trip, three times a week. “I don’t really understand how he didn’t get into Bradford on one of the trials but he has learnt from the experience. “I am very proud of the way he keeps going because he does keep getting scouted and is a great player.” STRIKER: Tabish Hussain, who previously played for Farsley AFC before moving to Bradford Park Avenue, is currently having trials with Premier League new-boys, Burnley
