Thousands raised for Give a Gift appeal More than 300 people crowded into Aagrah Midpoint last weekend as the Give a Gift appeal launched its latest event. With Bollywood dancers, fashion shows and photo shoots, all under one roof, the evening of ‘Glitz and Glamour’ proved to be a major success in helping raise thousands of pounds for the two local causes - Martin House Children’s Hospice and Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Heart Unit. Following on from the huge success of the toy donation appeal during Ramadhan and Eid, and last month’s 5k run, the night concluded with two £6,000 cheques being handed over to representatives from the two causes. A special catwalk was setup to present all the stunning attires, with clothing kindly donated for the night from Janan, Sass boutique and Reeshan ‘the golden stitch’, whilst makeup and hair, came free courtesy of Eliza’s Elegance. Balloonz by Julez donated more than £200 of balloons, decorating the whole stage and creating a spiral arch as well as providing foil balloons for the decor. Event organiser, Rifhat Malik, spoke of her gratitude for all the volunteers and donations which helped make the night possible. “We owe a big thank you to everyone involved in making the whole evening so special,” she said, “from Laila (Khan) and Ruby (Malik), our hostesses to all the companies involved. “It was stressful at times to arrange in such a short period of time but I have no doubt that I would do it all again in a heartbeat.” Yasmin Khan was one local business owner who got involved in the event due to a personal

connection, and donated a four-tier chocolate fountain for the night. Before the passing of her 18-year-old daughter, Safiyah Mohammed, in February, the local mother was offered respite by Martin House Children’s Hospice. The weekend’s event was the first time Ms Khan has been involved in such a fundraising effort since her loss and has now joined up with the Give a Gift team to help with future events. Sharon Cheng, LGI’s Director of the Children’s Heart Surgery fund, was in attendance on the night and thoroughly enjoyed the events, even getting involved with the onstage fashion show, calling it a ‘pleasure’ to be part of. “I was really impressed with the whole event,” she said. “The level of commitment everybody showed to organise it in such a short period of time was amazing and really showed their passion to help out the two causes. “The Give a Gift team are a brilliant example of communities pulling together to tackle a serious cause, such as children’s heart disease.” Sarah Tarpey, West Yorkshire community fundraiser for Martin House, also praised the night and was ‘thrilled’ to be invited and involved. She said: “I feel humbled by the fantastic support given to our children and families from the entire Asian Community, in particular Hanif and Rifhat Malik from the Hamara Health and Fitness centre. Adoption Awareness

People interested in finding out more about adoption, especially adopting a disabled child, are being invited to an information evening next week. The meeting will be held on Tuesday 26th November at Cockburn High School LS11 5TT at 6.30pm. Leeds City Council hosts monthly information evenings which provide potential adoptive parents with information about the adoption process and the children we need to find families for. This month’s information evening will focus particularly on highlighting disabled children and children with additional needs as well as providing general information about the adoption process. This will include adoptive parents of disabled children describing their parenting experiences and challenging negative stereotypes of disability. There will be presentations from adoption social workers and the opportunity for one to one discussions with parents and workers about adopting disabled children as well as the process of adoption.

Children’s rights top of agenda

Leeds has committed to respect, protect and fulfil children’s human rights as part of a new partnership with UNICEF, which will complement the city’s existing Child Friendly ambitions. As one of just six local authorities in the UK to sign up to the new partnership, Leeds is reaffirming its commitment to children and young people across the city. Leeds’ on-going ambition to be a child friendly city already fits well with UNICEF’s aims to put children’s rights at the heart of public services.

Philippines Fundraising

Residents in Leeds are being encouraged to support events being organised to help those affected by the disaster in the Philippines. The local Filipino Leeds Association, made up of Leeds residents originally from the Philippines, will be hosting a “tea and coffee for a cause” fundraiser at St Augustine’s Church on Harehills Road on December 1 at 10.30am to raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. And Filfoods on Harehills Road are also accepting donations, which will go to the Philippine National Red Cross, the Save the Children Foundation and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The Leeds group, many of whom work as nurses at St James's Hospital, decided to organise the event to help friends and family and to help local Filipinos awaiting news of their loved ones.

“OUT-DATED IMAMS DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD” Young Muslim men are turning away from religion in their droves because of the old-fashion attitudes in Britain’s mosques, according to the Prison Service’s Muslim advisor. Ahtsham Ali said it was one of the reasons why a growing number of Muslims are turning to crime and finding themselves in prison. We take a look at how Yorkshire’s Muslim communities feel about this and whether old fashioned Imams need to change their ways. Mr Ali also blamed family breakdown, problems resulting from arranged marriages, drugs and the absence of male role models. The cleric was highly critical of UK mosques for failing to understand young Muslims raised in Britain and said a main factor was that most import foreign imams who cannot speak English and focus only on religious rituals. Mr Ali, who has been the Prison Service’s adviser for eight-and-ahalf-years, said: “Most will get imams imported from other countries who can’t speak English. More importantly they can’t relate to second and third-generation youngsters growing up here. “It is a tragedy. I have seen youngsters, the next generation, just totally switch off from it. This is dangerous. It allows others to take advantage, to take up the vacuum.” In March 2010, 10,358 of the 85,184 people in prison were Muslim, while there has been a steep rise in the number of Muslims behind bars over the past two decades, according to the National Offender Management Service. Cllr Abid Hussain, who is also senior vice-president of the same Mosque Committee said the language barrier was a prominent problem and noted that kids often lost interest because they couldn’t understand Urdu or Punjabi. “Up until a few months ago the teachers were having problems speaking English which obviously caused some difficulties,” he said. The Madni Jamia Mosque in Bradford has been doing things a little differently for a while now. Offering madrassas in English as well as recently hosting a careers drop-in day, the Thornbury road mosque is moving with the times. Mosque General Secretary, Abdul Sattar said: “It's different to when we grew up when we could not understand Urdu very well. Mosques should be teaching in English as well as it’s the mother tongue of many of the children. “You’ll find that the children learn quicker and they remember more, which they can put into their own lives.” Discussing other reasons why he

more common, about what goes on at some mosques,” she said. “Hitting kids just gives all the wrong signals out. Rather than doing any good, it does the exact opposite; it’s not the way to teach them with force. “It’s about wanting to learn about your religion and when you have those bad memories of getting hit, you will always associate your religion with those memories.” Wajida now self schools her son at home and said it was the best decision she’d ever made. She added: “Yes sending your kids to the mosque is a great thing and we need to encourage this. “But I find teaching them yourself builds a greater bond between you and them, something that you will remember forever. “I remember my mum taught me how to read the Quran and it was brilliant.” A 21-year-old man of Bradford, wanting only to be referred to as Zaf has just served a short prison sentence for assault and he blames the pressures of society for the reasons in high prison rates among Muslims. “Yes we do have a problem in our Mosques, one of which is the Imams that are in them. “Most of the ones in Bradford don’t speak a word of English and just continue to do the same things, then we wonder why there are so many problems. “We need English speakers and those with knowledge to guide the youth of today.” Ayub Iqbal, a crime solicitor from Leeds sees a lot of Muslim clients. He speaks about his thoughts of the situation: “Most of my clients are Asian. Now that’s not just because there are a lot of Asians in Leeds and Bradford, it’s because a lot of Asians are getting into crime. “Now there must be a reason for that. I personally blame lack of education. While I do think some of our imams are a bit out of touch, even non-Muslims can be criminals.” However, one Bradford imam, Fiaz Ahmed said old-school teaching needs to be preserved for fear of losing traditions. He said: “I think most imams do a good job in not only following their religion but encouraging others to learn as well.”

Inspirational A former bus driver, who investigated complaints that Asian workers had to pay bribes to corrupt union officials before they could gain employment on the buses has broken all barriers. Mohammed Taj is the first Asian and Muslim trade unionist to be elected President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). At the age of 21, Taj became a bus driver and was introduced to union work, after which he became involved with the Transport and General Workers’ Union. He received death threats when he began to investigate complaints that Asian workers had to pay bribes to corrupt union officials and managers before they could gain employment on the buses. Not one for backing down, Taj was determined to uncover the truth and fight the injustice. He explains: “In those days you were talking about paying your first eight weeks of your salary to a middleman. “I persuaded people to talk and said ‘look it’s important we break the scandal.” As a result of his work into unjust

practices throughout the company, there was a court case and those found guilty were sent to prison. Now, commenting on how it felt to win the election and take on one of the UK’s most important jobs, Taj said: “Its’ a really proud moment for me, as someone who has made it through the ranks from shop floor level.” When asked how he felt to become the first Asian and Muslim President of the TUC, Mr Taj said: “I’m a worker first and a trade unionist who happens to be a Muslim. “I want to show people that anyone can succeed. I came to England in 1966 not being able to speak a word of English; I went to an immigrant centre for three months then onto Bradford College to study. “If I can do it, then so can you. Don’t give up, keep fighting, keep

trying and you will succeed!” Outlining what he hoped to achieve as President of the TUC, Taj said: “In my twelve months as President I would like to help lower the barriers to racism. I believe that one of the best way to break down racial barriers is the place of work.” Taj studied at the Trade Union Centre at Bradford College and later went on to teach the courses and is an avid supporter of the College. He gives credit to the Head of Trade Union Studies, Steve Davison and Bradford College Lecturer Bill Morgan-Cooper with encouraging him in his union work during his early involvement. Commenting on the newly elected President, Steve Davison, Head of Trade Union Studies at Bradford College said: “I’m absolutely delighted, both for the TUC and for Taj personally.

“Taj is one of life’s really good guys. “His story is both a Bradford story of an ordinary person overcoming the odds to reach the top - and a story of courageously fighting racism. “He has not been poisoned by it and has been able to make the breakthrough to represent people regardless of their skin colour, religion and their beliefs - and that I think sums up Mohammed Taj!” In 1982 Mr Taj was elected as a T&G’s shop steward at the company. Taj elaborating further said: “When I first stood, 70% of the members here were white at the time, so getting elected was a bit of a milestone because there was this perception that wherever there were white workers, you were not likely to succeed.” Ten years later he became a worker director for the whole of West Yorkshire.

In the late 1980s unions were beginning to look at how they might do more to better represent workers from black and Asian communities. Math Maestros A team of young mathematicians were celebrating a calculated victory last week as they scooped top prize in one of Leeds’ largest arithmetic competitions. In a hotly contested final, the team of four Year 6 pupils from Chapel Allerton Primary School overcame teams from 23 other schools to take the trophy in the Leeds Junior Schools’ Maths Challenge, held at the Grammar School at Leeds. The ‘fantastic four’: Kaustubh Bhatnagar, Adam Powell, Bethany Hare and Faith Hardy, qualified for the finals after success in the semi-finals, which

had seen almost 50 schools enter. Chapel Allerton’s Gifted and Talented maths class proved to be a winning combination on the day, as each team member decided a different part of the competition was their favourite. With sections such as number grids, puzzles and a multiple choice maths challenge, the contest ensured all areas of the subject were covered. Miss Alex Bradley, Year 6’s mathematics gifted and talented tutor, has been teaching at the school for ten years and began tutoring the current Year 6 gifted and talented class this year. “I have only been teaching this class since September and they are certainly a gifted bunch of mathematicians,” Miss Bradley said. “It is the first time we have entered into the maths

competition and they came back saying that lots of the things we had done in this group had helped them to solve some of the problems there. “I was really, really proud of them, and honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more. It gives them the recognition that they’re on the right track for their level six and they really are as brilliant as we think they are.” Year Six pupil, Kaustabh Bhatnagar added his delight at winning the competition. Speaking after clinching the Maths Challenge title, he said: “There was something for everyone. Some questions were easy; others really hard and luckily we had done algebra in extra maths.” Teammate Faith Hardy added: “We enjoyed coming out of school to do maths and liked the competition part of it even though it was tense. When I heard we had won I felt over the moon.”

Syed Shahrukh Shah, 31, from Pakistan, appeared at the Leeds Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 22nd November charged with the importation of a Class-A drug. Shah did not enter a plea and has been

remanded in custody until his next court appearance at Leeds Crown Court on 5th December. The drugs were found inside the baggage that belongs to Shah, and arrived on a flight from Islamabad, Pakistan on Wednesday night. Following the seizure by Border Force, the investigation and prosecution are being carried out by

the National Crime Agency. Kevin Parsons, acting assistant director for Border Force, said: “This is an excellent seizure of an extremely harmful drug and I would like to pay tribute to the vigilance and hard work of the officers involved. We will continue to work hard to keep our borders safe and crack down on drug smuggling.”

SENTENCED: Experienced pilot, Irfan Faiz gets nine months imprisonment for being drunk while in charge of his passenger jet flight out of Leeds Bradford International Airport This latest news follows hot on the heels of the sentencing of experienced PIA pilot, Irfan Faiz, 55, who was arrested for being drunk as he prepared to fly a plane. Faiz, father-of-two, was more than three times over the alcohol limit, as he was about to fly an Airbus with 156 people on board to Pakistan from Leeds Bradford Airport on 18th September. He was about to pilot the Pakistan International Airlines 776 flight to Islamabad, when he was asked to leave the cockpit due to concerns raised by security staff. Faiz gave an initial reading of 41 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath on the police officer's hand-held device. The legal limit for driving a car is 35 microgrammes but for flying in the UK it’s just nine, the court heard. He later gave a reading on the evidential machine of 28. Faiz's barrister, Paul Greaney QC, told the court his client was not a heavy drinker but was under a lot of stress at the time because of a kidnap threat against his family back home. Mr Greaney also told the judge that, despite being an experienced pilot, Faiz was not aware of the drink-fly rules in the UK and that the rules in Pakistan are that there

must be a 12-hour gap between ''bottle and throttle''. Mr Justice Coulson at Leeds Crown Court said he was ''astonished'' to hear that pilots regularly flying out of the UK were not aware of the rules in this country, which are based on the amount of alcohol present in the body. The court heard that Faiz was an experienced and wellrespected pilot with 25 years'

experience and an unblemished record. He has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment Solicitor Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, who are representing Faiz has confirmed to the Asian Express that they’ll be lodging an appeal against the sentence of nine months imprisonment. Mr Iftikhar said: “The basis of the appeal is that it is manifestly excessive in all the circumstances of his case and that the Court of Appeal will be requested to deal with Captain Faiz’s case on an expedited basis.” A source at the UK’s National Crime Agency told reporters that the agency was concerned about the rise in the numbers of PIA staff involved in the smuggling of Class-A drugs into the UK. A willingness to contribute positively to the school, both within and beyond the classroom, is essential.

A Leeds mother, who had to deal with the heartbreak of five miscarriages, has set up a new bereavement support group in the city to cater for parents of all faiths and religions. 34-year-old Ansa Ahmed knows firsthand about the support grieving families can, and cannot, receive following the death of their child and so made it her ‘mission’ to ensure there was support for every person. Over the past ten years, Ansa has had to endure five miscarriages, which included giving birth to two children, and found that the support mechanism in society was just ‘not there’. After years of wanting to set up a bereavement support group, and with the help of volunteers and generous institutions, the mother of one will finally fulfill her ambition when HOPE Bereavement support launches next month. Ansa is already very active in the field as a member of the maternity services liaison committee, an auditor for the LSA which audits the hospitals within Yorkshire and Humberside, and part of one of Leeds’ infant mortality steering groups, yet this support group will offer a completely new service to Leeds’ bereaved parents. Free two hour support groups will be held every Friday at Chapeltown Children Centre, from the 6th December, between 4pm and 6pm, and are open to everybody, regardless of faith or gender. “Everybody deals with loss in

different ways,” Ansa explained. “Over the past ten years I found healing for myself by helping others to cope. “I’ve had negative and positive experience in the hospitals, including some racist comments and it is the last thing you want to hear when you’ve just lost your baby. “Thankfully, I have got my little miracle, (14-month-old, Mustafa) but there are people out there who are suffering and therefore we set up HOPE. It’s something I’m really passionate about; to be able to give people out there this much needed helpline, regardless of faith or gender.” The group offers services of grief support and counseling for parents who have lost a child at any stage up to the age of 16, whilst people can also be referred to other agencies if needed. Special support is also given to women who, like Ansa, became pregnant after suffering a neonatal death previously. This was one of the hardest things the HOPE chair and founder had to deal with and describes the service as ‘essential’ for expectant mothers. She explained: “I found out first hand that there is nothing to support women who have lost before and are pregnant again. There is no specialised anti-natal, but now I’ve managed to work with the hospital’s, and local, midwife and maternity services and managed to speak with consultants who deal with midterm losses and got them to refer to. “It was only when I questioned a consultant why I was having trouble giving birth despite being past the ‘safe’ 21 weeks mark that I began to get answers.”

Statistically, Leeds has one of the worst infant mortality rates in the country with Asian families in particular having a higher number of fatalities. “In the Asian culture itself it seems as if it is a taboo subject that people just don’t want to talk about,” Ansa added. “It is often viewed upon as ‘God’s decision’ and you should just accept it but it must be acknowledged that we are all humans and need time to grieve and heal, but culturally that isn’t picked up.” 24-year-old Katie Popple is Secretary and Trustee of the HOPE Bereavement group. After also suffering the loss of a child during pregnancy earlier this year, the mother of one found there was little help offered by the hospitals and her local GP. Katie met Ansa at a breastfeeding support group and has been instrumental in helping to establish the soon-to-be launched group. “For me, I have no problem with the care that I have received throughout my two pregnancies, it is the lack of support after that is worrying,” she said. “After I unfortunately miscarried earlier this year, the nurse at the hospital took me into a corner room to explain the situation. However, people kept passing by and interrupting; it was like I didn’t really matter but at that time in your life, you should have their complete care and attention.” HOPE Bereavement group launches next month with its first free session on Friday 6th December. Bradford’s most famous husband and wife team were honoured last weekend as four generations of the Chand family arrived in the city for birthday celebrations. Mr Karam Chand (108), and his wife of more than 87 years, Kartari (101), held a ‘joint-party’ in the city to celebrate their birthdays on Sunday 16th November.

Eldest son, Dr Sodhi Ram, a professor at the Punjab University, travelled all the way from India with his wife to partake in the events which were held at the family home in Girlington, Bradford. With eight children, 27 grand children and more than ten greatgrandchildren the couple met as teenagers in their home country of India, before moving to Bradford more than 40 years ago. Paul Chand, another of the couple’s sons, helped organise the party and spoke of how proud he was to have such ‘amazing parents and family’. “I am always very proud of my mum and dad and know that we are very lucky to have them,” he

said. “We always said we will keep our mum and dad stress free so they don’t have to worry about anything at all and that is exactly what we do. They looked after us all for so long so now it is our time to look after them.” He added: “Saturday was amazing. To see four generations and three fathers sat together on the sofa was lovely and it is fantastic to have my mum and dad living happily and seeing that.” The world’s longest married couple will be celebrating again next month as their 88th wedding anniversary arrives on Wednesday 11th December. More celebrations will be planned to commemorate yet another momentous occasion and Paul believes the key to their long lives is the love and care which surrounds the family. “Parents are like gold,” he explained. “You have to look after them because they are so important to each and every one of us. rise in attacks against the Islamic faith over the past year, with more than double the number of incidents reported this year than last. When comparing May 2012 and 2013, attacks increased 139 per cent (from 41 incidents to 98), in June 2012 and 2013, attacks almost tripled from 33 to 98, whilst between July 2012 and July 2013, attacks rose once more, from 49 to 109, an increase of 122 per cent. ‘A phobia which must be removed from society’ is how Imam Qari Asim described the issue and explained how he believes that the best way to tackle the problem is through education. “We have seen it with phobias in the past, when racism was rife, people were educated and now society is much better because of it,” he said.

“This has to be done with the Islamic faith as well. We need to raise awareness of what Islam actually teaches and educate people who have got these misconceptions. False views on Sharia Law, oppression of women and extremism must be corrected. “People must be aware that any amount of hatred targeted at any community is not acceptable and will only weaken society.” Qari Asim also spoke of how he has been victim of Islamophobic comments in the past and hopes that the ‘Building Bridges’ event will be the first of many which encourage the eradication of the issue. He added: “Building Bridges will look at the reasons why Islamophobia exists and what can be done to prevent different communities from being

Victorian Market returns

Families will be able to enjoy some festive nostalgia in the run up to Christmas at Bradford Industrial Museum’s popular Victorian market. Arts in Health Award

A peer support group for people living with dementia in Leeds has been hitting the high notes by winning a local arts award. The Cultural Partnership group, part of Leeds City Council’s Peer Support Service, won the Arts in Health award at the recent Love Arts Leeds festival. The group runs a programme of activities at arts and heritage venues including the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre and the Leeds Central Library. A recent project saw the group, for people in the early stages of dementia and their carers, share their favourite memories of hit musicals they had seen. Members also met theatre staff and crew members and even created and recorded their own song as part of the Musical Memories scheme.

We like spicy food. Many of us have eaten the hottest they have to offer from both restaurants and street sellers here in the UK and abroad, and here at the Asian Express we ask for extra chillies when we get our weekly take-away order in the office. So, when the newsroom was awash with hearsay that we were to be in the presence of the world’s hottest chilli, the Bhut Jolokia AKA the ghost chilli, naturally we was intrigued. When the day came, the tension in the office was palpable as we were greeted by a small packet filled with the dried out ‘ghost chilli’. It quickly became apparent that most of us were going to ‘chicken out’ of tasting the notoriously fabled spice, which is a mindblowing 401.5 times hotter than tabasco sauce on the Scoville Scale. Cultivated in the Assam region of north-eastern India and parts of neighbouring Bangladesh, this chilli is a match for any food lover, and we weren’t about to back down from the Bhut Jolokia. The Scoville scale is a measurement of the spicy heat (or piquance) of a chilli pepper. The number of Scoville heat units (SHU) indicates the amount of capsaicin present and is is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, who devised the method in 1912. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially the mucous membranes. Foolishly, before trying the Indian chilli, we gave the pepper a quick search online – big mistake. Horror videos of people trying the Jolokia before being rushed off to hospital and statements from the Indian government suggesting they were going to use the pepper in hand grenades in the fight against terrorism didn’t do anything for our antipathy. So, with a pint of milk for

company one of the lads at Asian Express began his climb of the Bhut Jolokia mountain. First, we prepped him by adding a small portion of black pepper to his lunch to ‘ease him in’. This went down relatively easy and so he decided to up the ante and take on the chilli solo.

Along with the wide-eyed and alarming look on his face, his tongue, tonsils, gums and throat were all on fire as his face slowly developed a crimson glow. The pint of milk quickly evaporated and he was left to battle the aftermath alone, that said, he could have drank a field of cows dry and it still wouldn’t have rectified the torturous pain of heat he was feeling. Despite assuring him that the pain would subside, 20 minutes later, he was still suffering the wrath of the Bhut Jolokia. The rest of the Asian Express

team were unsure whether to console him or laugh, bravely kept their distance as the ‘guinea pig’ paced the office desperate to take his mind off the utter distress he was facing. Finally, after around half an hour, he stabilised and was able to

breath normally. So, it seems that in the ‘Man vs Food’ challenge mankind couldn’t beat the Bhut. We’d given it an enthusiastic attempt, but we can safely conclude that ghost chilli remains an undefeated champion.

An enquiry into the death of a four-year-old boy who was starved by his mother said that his death "could not have been predicted", but UKs systems "let Hamzah down both before and following his death". Children's minister, Edward Timpson, has identified ten important questions that he thinks the review should have answered. They all relate to the apparent failure of social workers to follow up a succession of episodes where Hamzah's siblings had appealed for help or had given cause for concern. Hamzah Khan's mother Amanda Hutton, 43, was jailed for 15 years last month after the boy's decomposed body was found in a cot in her bedroom in Bradford, Yorkshire, nearly two years after he died. Professor Nick Frost, who chairs the Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "The SCR (serious case review) is very clear that Hamzah's death could not have been predicted but finds that systems, many of them national systems, let Hamzah down both before and following his death." But Children’s Minister, Edward Timpson, has said the review is a “rubbish document”. Mr Timpson said he has “deep concerns” because it “fails to explain sufficiently clearly the actions taken, or not taken, by children's social care”. He said the answers to the “glaring absences” from the review must be made public to “ensure such mistakes will not be repeated in the future”. A DfE (Department for Education) source said: “It's even more worrying that local agencies don't realise how poor an investigation this is. “There will have to be a proper investigation to answer the serious questions it raises.” Prof Frost said: "It is my

I am satisfied that systems are in place today that minimise the chance of a situation such as this ever being repeated in Bradford.” Bradford Crown Court heard how alcoholic Hutton was living in “breathtakingly awful” conditions with five of her young children as well as Hamzah's mummified remains when shocked police entered the four-bedroom house in September 2011.

A jury found she had allowed Hamzah to starve to death in December 2009 and left his body in a cot with a teddy. The remains were only discovered due to a rookie police community support officer's tenacious pursuit of a minor anti-social behaviour complaint because she knew something was wrong. The family was known to all the main agencies yet Hutton had a history of failing to cooperate with services that could have helped her. Peter Wanless, chief executive of the NSPCC, said: “Tragically Hamzah became invisible, slipping off the radar of our entire society the moment he left hospital after birth. “We have to ask how this could happen in 21st century Britain. His mother made no attempt to register his birth; he missed midwife appointments, health visitor checks, immunisations; and he was never registered for school. “A red flag must be raised when key appointments are missed so that children cannot disappear. “It cannot be right that the first time someone took serious steps to track him down was six years after his birth by which time he was already dead.”

Bradford's Christmas lights show has been hailed a success by Bradford Council bosses. It is estimated that up to 20,000 people attended Mauré Christmas Lights 2013, held in the multi-award winning City Park last Saturday. Delighted crowds marvelled at Argentine aerial artists, Voalá as they performed daring aerial acrobatics with amazing lighting and pyrotechnic effects while British rock band, Duchamp Pilot played original rock songs. At various points throughout the show, the twelve spinning acrobats swooped down on the audience and sprinkled confetti and streamers from a giant op-art mobile suspended over 100 feet above City Park. The evening began with Christmas carols by Bradford Festival Choral Society and finished with a crescendo of fireworks signalling that Bradford's Christmas illuminations had been switched on. Mauré is the brainchild of Argentines Roberto Strada and Gaston Iungman and has been performed in Montreal, Stockholm and Paris. Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, Portfolio Holder for Employment, Skills and Culture said: "We are delighted so many people enjoyed our Christmas lights switch on. “This year's event was a little different to a lot of celebrity focused switch ons and we are very pleased local people have responded so positively to the show. “Our City Park events are clearly proving very popular and they play an important role in supporting the development of the local economy.”

Kirklees revamp

Wakefield Council will be starting works to improve the Kirkgate area of the city next week by re-paving the junction of George Street to the Ridings Shopping Centre entrance. This week the government faced questions in the House of Commons over its handling of allegations of fraud at one of its first flagship free schools. MPs focused on the Kings Science Academy (KSA) in Bradford, the subject of an internal audit highlighting large sums of missing money. This is teamed allegations of mismanagement and possible fraud, which includes fabricated invoices in order to claim thousands of pounds of public money. KSA was one of the first free schools approved by the Department for Education (DfE), and opened in September 2011, as a science-focused secondary school for up to 800 pupils between ages 11 and 16. It moved to a new £10m building in the Lidget Green area last year. Earlier this year, Ofsted inspectors gave KSA a “requires improvement” grade in teaching and management. Last month the DfE published a redacted report from its own internal audit of the academy. It revealed that a whistleblower at the

Investigation into financial affairs of Bradford’s Kings Science Academy suggests fraudulent invoices and claims

school had admitted that it had submitted fabricated invoices to the DfE. The report also found that £86,335 of a lead-in grant given by the department to help set up the free school had not been spent on what it was intended for. The investigation comes hard on the heels of the ongoing controversy at the Al-Madinah free school in Derby, which also involved allegations of financial mismanagement and which announced the resignation of the chair of its board of governors. “We found serious failings in financial management at the Kings Science Academy. We informed the police who decided no further action was necessary,” said a spokesman for the DfE. The spokesman said a plan was in place to recover the misued funds, and that the school was undertaking its own investigation. “Any necessary disciplinary action is a matter for the school,” he said. However, it has since emerged that the DfE reported the matter to

Action Fraud – the UK’s national fraud reporting centre in April. A Home Office confirmed that an ‘administrative error’ by Action Fraud led to it being classed an information report. Since the mistake came to light West Yorkshire Police has launched its own investigation. The Home Office says the “administrative error” was only discovered at the beginning of this month. Bradford’s Liberal Democrat MP David Ward and Respect MP George Galloway have both questioned why the DfE failed to realise that the matter had not been properly passed onto the police sooner. Between them the two MPs have submitted more than 20 written Parliamentary questions to Education Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May regarding the Kings Science Academy case.

Sex accused taxi driver ‘thought the girl was 16’ 32-year-old taxi driver, Shakil Munir, appeared at Teeside Crown Court accused of having sex with two schoolgirls. He met one of the girls after sending messages on Facebook, and told a court that nothing happened between them in his car. The driver, then aged 31, believed that the girl was 16-years-old, but had deactivated his Facebook account after he was confronted by the girl’s mother. The court heard that Bradford-born Munir had ‘lots’ of young friends on Facebook. He is accused of having underage sex with the 14year-old schoolgirl in a layby and later told her mother he believed she was 16. Munir, of Middlesbrough, is one of four defendants accused of sexually exploiting a number of teenagers from the town. The prosecution alleged he picked up a 14year-old girl and had sex with her in the early hours in a parking spot on the A19 after the girl had asked Munir to pick her up and take her to the garage to buy cigarettes. Munir told the jury of ten women and two men at Teesside Crown Court he thought the sexual messages between them on Facebook were 'banter'. Asked by his barrister Ekwall Tiwana why he got involved in the online conversation, Munir who is twice-married said: 'To be honest with you, I was going through a bad patch and I was bored and I just started chatting.' He had recently picked up the girl and two of her friends and given them a free lift, the jury heard. He denied they had sex in his car when they stopped in a lay-by.

He explained that she had wanted to talk and told him about her family life and her problems. Munir parked up and they talked, he said, but he denied having sex with the girl. That night, with the girl still in his car, Munir received a text from her mother, telling him to bring her home immediately or she would call the police. It was only when the mother said her daughter was 14 that he realised her age, he said. 'I thought she was 16,' he told the jury. In a later meeting with the mother, he told her: 'Your daughter told me she was 16.' Munir is also charged with having sex with a 13-year-old who was in care. He denies five counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of child abduction. His co-accused - 18-year-olds Junaid Butt and Ibrar Mahmood, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons - also deny the charges against them. The trial continues.

Appeal: Armed Robbery Tesco Express, Burley, Leeds

Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery at a shop in Leeds. At about 7pm on Saturday (16/11) four masked men armed with crowbars and hammers entered the Tesco Express, in Burley Road, Burley. They threatened staff and customers before stealing a substantial amount of cash and cigarettes.

The men ran off when staff managed to activate an alarm. No-one was injured in the incident. The robbers left the scene in a bright red Audi RS4 Estate which was later found abandoned in Salisbury Avenue, Armley. Viper unleashed in West Yorkshire

A new initiative to cut crime across West Yorkshire has made its first strike by sinking its teeth into Bradford's drug dealers. Operation Viper, which is officially launched in the county this week, sees officers from Crime Division, Quartz and Operations Support Services Division team up with local officers and partners, such as councils and housing associations, to target and arrest the county's most prolific criminals. Focusing on those profiting from drug dealing and burglary, Viper struck with a series of raids on addresses in the Bradford District this week, making 41 arrests, seizing £5,000 worth of Class A drugs and £7,500 in cash. Four air weapons were also recovered along with £80,000 of high value goods. Shopping areas, supermarkets and residential crime hotspots across the county will also be priority areas for the operation. Chief Superintendent David Oldroyd is leading the operation, which, he said, would also transfer the fear of crime from communities to criminals. "Viper will make it clear that there is no hiding place for these criminals. They will not feel safe in their own homes and we will do everything we

can to bring them to justice. "West Yorkshire Police has an ambition to be a worldclass force, where our communities are safe and feel safer, and Viper will help us to achieve that ambition. Over 70 years after International Students' Day was first marked by the International Students Council, UK universities launched a groundbreaking new film aimed at helping the most talented Indian students better understand the process of applying to the UK’s worldleading universities. Made by award-winning Indian filmmaker Ravi Lekhi, the video was directed and produced by independent and BBC journalists, Sue Emmett and Nicola Carslaw, and commissioned by the University of Sheffield. The film provides Indian students a taster of the immigration and visa application process by giving first hand personal accounts from current Indian students, Arshi Aggarwal and Angesh Anupam. 25-year-old, Arshi, from New Delhi, praised the programme and promoted the message being spread. A new ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ national campaign was launched this week, to increase early diagnoses of bladder and kidney cancer and save lives. Receiving an early diagnosis increases the chance of survival for the 16,600 people who are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer every year in England. A new NHS ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign launches this week, to drive awareness of blood in urine as a key symptom of bladder and kidney cancers, and encourage people to visit their doctor if they spot the symptom, even just the once. One of the reasons people do not receive an early diagnosis is believed to be the public’s lack of awareness of the key symptoms. Blood in urine – even if it appears just the once – could be a symptom of both bladder and kidney cancer. New figures, however, show that the public doesn’t recognise the seriousness of the sign – almost a third of people would wait and see if they spotted blood in their urine again before taking any action, which could delay their diagnosis. It is also believed that within South Asian communities there are cultural and religious reasons that can

prevent people from seeing their doctor early. There is often a strong fear of cancer, a perception that cancer is an incurable disease that quickly leads to death. Some believe that by talking about it is tempting fate. But finding it early makes it more treatable so if you notice blood in your urine tell your doctor straight away. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “Early diagnosis and treatment of bladder and kidney cancer can save lives. We need to overcome the barriers preventing people presenting early to their doctors so that we can save more lives across all communities. “Our message is clear – as soon as you spot blood in your urine, visit the doctor. It’s probably nothing serious but it could also be a sign of something else that needs treatment, so don’t ignore the symptoms or put off a trip to the doctor.” Visible blood in urine is a key symptom in around eight in ten bladder cancers and over half of kidney cancers. However, when the public was asked to name cancer signs and symptoms, only a third of people mention unexplained bleeding.

This must not be ignored and I would urge any person who has blood in their urine to see their doctor straight away. After an assessment your doctor may refer you to the hospital for further tests. “If cancer is found, early and timely diagnosis will result in a good long term possibility of survival.” Blood in your urine is the most common symptom for both types of cancer. Other bladder cancer symptoms include needing to urinate very often or very suddenly and/or pain while urinating. Other kidney cancer symptoms include a pain below the ribs that doesn’t go away or a lump in your stomach. A special two weeks of learning began last week, as Horton Grange Primary School’s youngsters got hands on with promoting equality in the classroom. With more than 700 children attending the school, Horton Grange is one of the biggest Primary educational establishments in Bradford and boasts an array of nationalities and religions within the classrooms. Already recognised as one of the leading schools in the country for promoting diversity, the school was the first nationally to receive the Stephen Lawrence Award at Level Two. The accolade recognises the extensive work done by the school to promote cohesion in the multicultured society. The Interfaith fortnight included a host of activities which gave the children a chance to learn about different religious and non-religious faiths, whilst every year group were allocated a specific religion to study throughout the programme. The Punjabi Roots Academy staged a number of performances for all the children earlier this week

and entertained the crowds with their unique dance and performance act. The Academy were the latest guests at the school who were invited to promote diversity, with the likes of the Make Bradford British cast, and Show Racism the Red Card representatives previously holding workshops to spread similar messages. Ms Niela Ahmed, RE and Equality Co-ordinator, has been working at the school for 13 years and believes there is no other establishment quite like Horton Grange. She explained: “I love working here, it is a fantastic place to be even with the 700 pupils we have. “We are a multi-faith, multicultural school who aim to promote tolerance and understanding to the children in an attempt to build a cohesive community here in Bradford. “It is vitally important that children recognise everybody is unique in their own way, yet at the same time we are also the same. Every person is a human being at the end of the day and therefore we try to spread this message as much as we can. “The Stephen Lawrence award is

a great honour and represents how much our school actually does to promote equality.” Children from a number of religions and nationalities all currently attend the Bradford school, with pupils coming from as

far as Somalia and Libya. A dedicated Language Support Unit has been put in place to cater for these pupils and help integrate them into the educational system. Even with a number of challenges and hurdles to overcome the school

The move marks the latest step in the Government’s work to create a financial sector that serves customers and supports British businesses. Tough new rules are being introduced as part of a package of ongoing work by the government to crack down on the rogue firms responsible for bombarding the public with misleading advertising and flooding banks with unsubstantiated claims for compensation – at a cost to other customers. To ensure that the claims management industry delivers the best possible results for consumers, the Claims Management Regulation (CMR) Unit at the Ministry of Justice will also be expanded with more enforcement staff, funded by an uplift in fees paid by regulated claims firms, and a new set of toughened conduct rules will be unveiled this week to bear down on abuses by companies. Government action has already seen the number of claims firms operating drop by more than 1,000 since a peak of 3,400 in 2011 to 2,300 now. protect customers and we are making certain that firms are following the rules. "We do not tolerate bad practice and continue to take action against companies which break the rules, including removing their licence to trade. Issuing fines will be an important new weapon for us." As well as employing more staff to tackle irresponsible practice by claims firms, the Government will strengthen the CMR Unit by appointing independent regulatory experts in non-executive roles and will commission a comprehensive review of the independence of the current Claims Management Regulator’s governance arrangements.

Pregnant wife and three children suffered carbon monoxide poisoning due to leaking boiler at council home A Bradford family say they have been put through ‘hell’ over the past five months with all residents of the home suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and persistent exposure to harmful gases. The house, on Powell Avenue, Bradford, is currently owned by housing provider, Incommunities and has been subject to a host of complaints since the current occupants moved in on the 7th June. Mr Zahid Shah, 39, and his pregnant partner Mrs Zolaikhan Bibi, 32, moved into the home with their three children and have been struggling to cope with the conditions ever since. A leaking boiler, rusty door handles, potent stenches and exposed paving slabs have all been challenges for the family to overcome with little aid from their landlords. After spending more than £1,800 of the families own money to renovate the house with paint and plastering, Mr Shah had hoped that this new home would be the perfect place to raise his growing family. However, problems soon began to arise with Mrs Bibi first smelling gas in the home days after moving in. “I was upstairs at the time and could tell immediately something was wrong,” she explained. “I could smell gas coming from downstairs so we called the gas board and they confirmed there was a leak from the boiler. “There was an old woman who used to live here, her daughter lives across the road and she told us that there were a number of gas leaks whilst her grandmother was here. Her grandma used to always complain about streamy eyes as well, things we have been going over the past four or five months.” The family’s boiler was reviewed a further five times and condemned thrice before it was removed and replaced with a brand new one by the Incommunities landlord. After suffering from headaches and sleepiness, Mrs Bibi, and her family, was told to have their blood checked after the maternity nurses became concerned about the health of the eight-month pregnant mother. “Initially we were told by our doctor that everything was normal but when we had the tests done by the maternity department, the results showed that every one of us had more

than double the normal carbon monoxide levels in our blood,” Mr Shah explained. “It was shocking, I have seen what these kind of numbers mean for healthy people but for a pregnant mother, I don’t even want to contemplate the effects it could have on our child.” Three-year-old Zulqurnaian Mehdi Sherazi had the highest levels of carbon monoxide in his blood at 2.9, (recommended 1.1) whilst his two sisters, seven-year-old Zohrah Batool Sherazi, (2.6) and Rizah-e-Zainab Sherazi (2.8) were also well above the average levels. Mr Shah now insists that the main issue surrounds a ‘potent stench’ which is coming from underneath the floorboards. Despite attempts to correct the issue, the tenant states that the smell still returns and is a ‘major hindrance for the family’. Bradford Councillor, Naveeda Ikram, has supported the family since hearing about the conditions and demanded action to be taken to help the family. She said: “What we are demanding first of all, is that this family needs rehousing as a matter of urgency to a property where they are completely safe. It is something which should have been done one or two months ago when these problems first began. “I wrote to Ms Geraldine Howley, one of the chief executives of Incommunities, on the 11th October and received an acknowledgement letter soon after yet it did not assure action would be taken. “The big point is we are talking about carbon monoxide poisoning here and a pregnant mother. This family is clearly upset with the system and clearly Incommunities need to act and change their system. They need to pay Mr Shah back the money he has invested and accommodate these people elsewhere straight away.” An Incommunities spokesperson said: “All the appropriate checks have been carried out by independent gas engineers on several occasions and no trace of a Carbon Monoxide leak has been found at the customers’ property. “As a caring and responsible landlord, within the last month, we have fitted a new gas boiler and an electric fire to replace a gas one at the address.”

follow us on twitter: Asian businesses in Yorkshire paid almost £100,000 in penalties for employing illegal workers during the summer months of last year, a report has revealed. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) imposed a number of fines on 16 establishments between 1st July and 30th September, 2011. The maximum penalty for the employer is £10,000 per illegal worker and may be liable to imprisonment if they are convicted on indictment. Figures show that £99,500 was forked out by Asian firms in the region in just three months. The owner of a fast food chain in Rotherham was issued with a £15,000 penalty, one of the highest in Yorkshire, the NorthEast and Humberside. Employers are given strict guidelines to follow when taking on migrant workers, requesting them to make the necessary document checks to avoid criminalising themselves. A statement from UKBA said: “Illegal working has damaging social and economic consequences for the UK. It undercuts businesses that operate within the law, undercuts British workers, and exploits migrant workers. “As long as there are job opportunities for illegal workers, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal migrants. This government works with UK employers to

ensure they take their responsibility of avoiding employing illegal workers seriously.” Business owners are entitled to appeal any cases made against them, but they must prove that they checked all the documents of the worker in question, acknowledged any warnings issued by the authorities and co-operated with UKBA. The Government has imposed an immigration cap of 20,700 non-EU migrant workers coming to Britain under Tier 2 of the visa system, which some companies believe has damaged business but there is little evidence of this. The limit does not apply to multinational companies transferring workers from overseas departments to British offices, although strict conditions apply to who has the right to stay in the UK for long periods of time. During July 1st and September 30th last year 9,706 Tier 2 migrant workers came to the UK, including general workers, ministers of religion, sportspeople and work permit holders. Immigration Minster, Damian Green, was recently quoted as saying migrants must “add to the quality of life in Britain.” The Tory MP also said that he wanted to redefine the “pointsbased system” as a “contribution-based system.”

Bradford college boosts local economy by more than £268.9 million

Findings from a new report produced by Economic Modelling Specialists International (EMSI) have revealed that Bradford College contributes £268.9 million each year to the business community in the Bradford Region. This equates to approximately 2.8 per cent of the area’s total economic output. Bradford College has a significant positive impact on its main stakeholder groups: learners, society, taxpayers, and the local business community. The report calculated the College’s regional economic impact through factors including: higher earnings for learners, improving skills among the workforce and enhanced business productivity, along with social savings made through reduced demands for welfare. The figures were revealed after Further Education Colleges in West Yorkshire commissioned research to measure their economic impact. The study undertaken by economic research specialists EMSI calculated that together the Colleges contribute £1.8 billion to the local economy. Anthony Horne, EMSI Business Development Manager for Northern Region, elaborating further said: “The

EMSI Economic Impact Study measures the impact that colleges have on their local economy in a uniquely detailed and innovative way. We look at a wide range of factors, for example the impact that previous years students are having on the local economy, as well as projecting forward the future earning potential of existing students and their likely impact on the local economy. It is fantastic that Bradford College and the other local consortium colleges now have an Economic Impact Study to further augment the positive work that colleges do in economic development and growth.” According to the report, the present value of the added tax revenue stemming from the learners' higher lifetime incomes and the increased output of businesses amounts to £62.5 million in benefits to taxpayers. Avoided costs to the public sector adds another £6.3 million in benefits due to a reduced demand for government-funded social services in the UK. The report also revealed that learners at Bradford College who relocate to the Region from outside of the area spend money at local shops to buy books and

supplies, purchase groceries, rent accommodation, pay for transport, attend sporting events, and so on. The expenditure of Bradford College out-of-region learners annually adds approximately £2.0 million in income to the Bradford Region's economy. Bradford College employed 983 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff in 2011-12. Staff costs amounted to £39.1 million, much of which was spent in the Bradford Region to purchase groceries, clothing, and other household goods and services. The College is itself a buyer of goods and services and spent £22 million to support its operations in 2011-12. College expenditure further benefited many local suppliers in the Bradford Region. The net impact of staff and College expenditure in the Bradford Region comes to approximately £33.4 million in added income in the regional economy each year. In the case of PGF II SA –v- OMFS Company 1 Limited (2013), the Claimant Landlord issued proceedings against the Defendant Tenant seeking damages in excess of £1.9 million in respect of the disrepair of rented office premises. The Landlord made an offer to settle its claim at £1.25 million, which was rejected. The Landlord’s Solicitors suggested the parties should attempt mediation, to which the Tenant’s only response was to put forward an offer of £700,000 without providing an explanation as to the basis of that offer. The Tenant did not respond to the invitation to mediate, even when this was later repeated. The day before the trial was due to commence, the Landlord accepted the Tenant’s offer upon receiving notification that the Tenant’s Defence was to be amended to include a new argument which impacted upon the case. The parties had by this stage incurred a further £250,000 in legal costs since the Tenant had made its offer.

Ordinarily when an offer is accepted the accepting party is entitled to recovery of its legal costs save that where an offer is accepted more than 21 days after it has been made then the accepting party has to pay their opponent’s costs incurred since that date. In this case, the Tenant sought recovery of it costs incurred since the date 21 days after the offer had been made, but the Court found that these costs were not recoverable due to the refusal by the Tenant to mediate. The Tenant appealed but the Court of Appeal upheld the decision and took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of the role of ADR in settling disputes not least because of the success rates of mediation and the costs benefits to the parties and to Court resources. Even if not wholly successful, the use of some form of ADR can often narrow the issues between the parties. The Court of Appeal did not go so far as to create a general principle that an otherwise successful party who has unreasonably refused mediation should pay the unsuccessful party’s costs but did note that this was an aspect of the parties’ conduct which would be addressed as part of a wider balancing exercise. This case gives a clear message to all parties to litigation that they must not unreasonably refuse to explore forms of ADR or they will risk facing what could be severe sanctions. £184million boost for the area which branded itself as a ‘city coming out of the shadows’

Hull has been named the next UK City of Culture and started work on a multi-million pound programme to bring the city ‘out of the shadows’. It saw off competition from rival bids by Dundee, Leicester and Swansea Bay to win the accolade which is handed out every four years. Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Maria Miller, said the announcement could "produce a wonderful mix of inward investment, and civic pride" for the city. TV producer Phil Redmond, who chaired the advisory panel that helped choose the winner, said all four shortlisted cities showed a "real understanding" of what the award was about. He said: "But ultimately it was the unanimous verdict of the panel that Hull put forward the most compelling case based on its theme as 'a city coming out of the shadows'. This is at the heart of their project and reminds both its people and the wider world of both its cultural past and future potential. "We were particularly impressed with Hull's evidence of community and creative engagement, their links to the private sector and their focus on legacy, including a commitment to enhance funding beyond 2017 and I'd like to congratulate all involved." The current city of culture, Londonderry, has seen visitor numbers double over the course of this year and has had around £120 million of capital

investment pumped into the city since the title was won in 2009. The leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady, said that the city would now have its chance to change the reputation that some people have put on it in the past. Hull's plan for 2017 includes an opening ceremony with 3,000 volunteers paying tribute to its heritage as a major fishing port, a light show and the planting of thousands of trees to create "sustainable gateways to the city". The council admits one of the aims of the bid is to "change the perceptions" of the city. It is often derided - up until this year regularly featuring in the satirical book Crap Towns - and last month an Economist article cited Hull as one of "Britain's Decaying Towns". The magazine said it was among a list of northern towns and cities that were "decaying, despite dollops of public money and years of heroic effort" and urged ministers to help people move away or commute from these towns to places where there are more jobs. Former Hull MP Lord Prescott tweeted "It's Happy Hour again! HullYes Well done" - a reference to the 1986 top three hit by the Housemartins, who formed in Hull. Perhaps the city's most famous cultural connection is the poet Philip Larkin who lived and worked in Hull as a librarian for many years. The city's music scene has produced names including guitarist Mick Ronson, who regularly backed David Bowie, and indie duo ‘Everything But The Girl’. Billy Liar star Sir Tom Courtenay and actress Maureen Lipman are both from Hull.

He said: “The natural colour has been used in Asian cooking for long time but it got replaced by artificial colour sometime in 19th Century. Since then its use has been abused rather than provide colour for a reason. I do not like the use of artificial colour in the food at all. “We use only natural source of colour – if ever we have to use – however, we prefer not to use any form of colour in our food. ‘Nature gives us the Best’ is our policy. Artificial colour using restaurants are making Indian food look cheap just to make little better profit. When asked about the relevance of Indian food in Britain, he added: “It is quite a favoured cuisine in the UK. It has a long history with Indian food and it was one of the first Asian food to reach UK. He said: “I am opposed to artificial colours. The British public needs to be educated on what to expect. “A lot of people expect Indian food to be brightly coloured. The battle for chefs like me and others is to educate people on the matter. The attitude to Asian food is that it is cheap and cheerful but we have to prove that wrong. “It’s difficult for the smaller business because they have smaller profit margins and more competition. They get into the bad habit of using colours and they are afraid that they will stop using they lose their customers. They need to stop serving greasy and fatty foods, too. “I threw out all of the dyes and colourings in my first kitchen and I received complaints saying my tandoori dishes were the wrong colour. If the smaller businesses had more courage, better standards and better knowledge the bad cooking practices would stop. “I think the British public has one of the most discerning palates in the world and they have chosen Indian dishes as their favourite because the food is open like the culture. I just wish the British public was more patriotic.”

NO CLUE: Some chefs are making meals that are neither authentic nor healthy

Who is to blame? Preparing a curry is an art in itself. An accomplished chef can use over 20 spices when making the base for a dish, in order to create something that is vibrant in both flavour and appearance. The essence of making curries is that it is an unregulated practice However, a cook who may cut corners, adding dyes and food colourings to create the resplendent red sauce usually associated with chicken tikka masala. As restaurants and takeaways appear on every street corner, poor quality curries are slowly becoming a problem for the wellbeing of the public and Asian culture itself. Health issues. Salt is another culprit in Asian cuisine, as the communal nature of preparing a curry makes it difficult to gauge how much salt is added. The Department of Health, which now regulates salt content in food, has found that 75 per cent of the salt we eat is already in food. David Pickering at Trading Standards said: “It is not our job to say to people that having a takeaway is dangerous, but it is our job to step in when a restaurant or takeaway has been reported as being dangerous. “For whatever reason people find their local Indian restaurant makes great curries then you go to another and their curries are a poor quality. “We recently inspected a takeaway restaurant that had 27g of salt in one meal which is just unacceptable.” A person’s recommended salt intake is 6g a day, anymore than this can raise blood pressure and ultimately put you at risk of heart disease and strokes. Food colourings are increasingly becoming a crisis for the wellbeing of people eating curries. Guidelines set by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) state: “colours may only be used if they perform a useful purpose, are safe and do not mislead the consumer.” Further research initiated by the FSA and Trading Standards has found some artificial colourings in particular are singlehandedly contributing to a decline in health. Colours such as tartrazine, sunset yellow and allura red are known to be added to curries, and it is these curries that the FSA and Trading Standards have linked to hyperactivity. Prolonging the problem. The notion of having a few drinks and going for a curry, famously covered by the sketch show ‘Goodness Gracious Me,’ is still very popular amongst Britons up and down the country. As a multi-cultural society, it is commendable that Asian cuisine is part of British culture, but are drunk punters, whose culinary judgement has been affected by the alcohol in their system, keeping a substandard curry industry alive? Al Madinah restructure

A new education trust will now take charge of the troubled Al-Madinah school in Derby, after a host of failures were found following its latest OFSTED report. Education Minister, Lord Nash, confirmed on Friday (22nd November) that the school has been placed in the hands of the new trust after 17 areas of improvement were highlighted earlier this year. The school had been described as ‘dysfunctional’ by the inspectors as well as complaints from several stakeholders such as teachers having to wear headscarves regardless of religion. The current trustees have agreed to resign along with the chair of governors, Shazia Parveen. Tobacco smugglers caught red-handed Two Bolton men, caught with illegal tobacco, have been sentenced for trying to evade over £148,000 in tax. Hayatulah Mosavi, 38, was caught red-handed unloading tobacco and cigarettes at the home of Hawkar Sulaiman, 37, in Bolton. Investigators seized over 770kg of illegal hand rolling tobacco (HRT) and 100,000 smuggled Chinese cigarettes from the vehicle and premises in October last year. During a follow up search of Mosavi’s home in Nugent Road, officers uncovered more smuggled cigarettes. Forensic evidence linked all the illegal goods to the two men. After an investigation by HMRC both men were charged with excise duty evasion in May 2013, and pleaded guilty to all charges at their first court appearance in October. Sandra Smith, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC, said: “Mosavi was caught as he unloaded boxes of illegal tobacco at Sulaiman’s home, and more boxes containing tobacco and

cigarettes were found hidden under the kitchen counter tops, under the stairs and in the yard. These men will now pay the price for their criminal activities. “We urge the public to come forward and let us know if they have information about the sale, transport, or storage of suspect

Would Muslims fight on the front line against their own CALL OF DUTY: Muslim soldiers in Afghanistan

The conflict within British Muslims make up a tiny proportion of Britain's armed forces. But they are vital to an organisation that wants to show military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are not wars against Islam. We find out what the word on the street is from British Muslims and ask whether or not they’d seriously join the British Army to protect their country. When L/Cpl Jabron Hashmi became the first British Muslim soldier to die in Afghanistan in July 2006, his death prompted debate about what motivates Muslims to join the armed forces. Bradford based student Adil Mubarak said he was given masses of information during school about joining the armed forces but always felt uncomfortable with the idea of fighting against ‘his own.’ The 19-year-old Muslim said: “During career days and stuff, we always got a barrage of facts and figures from people wanting us to join the army. “I always felt a little nervous when they’d ask me, because obviously I am a Muslim and, for whatever reason, could not kill another Muslim, or any other human being for that matter. “It’s a war that’s not really been popular anyway, and all you hear about on the news is our soldiers dying out there, what incentive can that give anybody to join up? It’s not only a religious reason, I don’t want anything to happen to me either.” However, 22-year-old law graduate Sameera Yusuf said she didn’t have a problem signing up to the army, because Britain is ‘our home.’ The Halifax trainee lawyer said: “Just because we are Muslims it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight for our country. Those people who are threatening to blow this country up are not Muslims, they just use the name. “Surely the best way of integrating this country is to fight alongside your fellow Brits for the good of the country. A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “Once in the armed forces, Muslims could still practice their faith as far as practicable.” “We try to accommodate people with religious beliefs as far as possible - we even have halal ration packs.”

Religious perspective

Leeds Islamic teacher Imran Nazir said it was a tricky situation for a Muslim to find him or herself in. He said, while it was important for them to respect their country and integrate there was a fine line with the Islamic interpretation. “The Holy Quran teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind. “So for a Muslim this creates problems in itself. Personally I don’t really agree with this ‘war’ anyway so Muslim or non Muslim I would be advising against anybody going out there. “I do see the problem of identity for Muslims though, although I don’t condone what these terrorists are doing, there are many innocent Muslims who are dying as well, and I don’t support that for one minute.”

There are outreach programmes up and down the country aiming to recruit and engage from the Muslim community. But they’ve proved not as effective as intended thus far.

‘Not English way’

A Birmingham Imam recently said that Muslims should not fight in the British armed forces on conscientious grounds due to their presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Shaykh Asrar Rashid, a visiting cleric at the city's mosques, also said the Queen was "a disgusting woman" for knighting author Salman Rushdie. In 1989 Iran's leaders called for the death of Mr Rushdie for writing The Satanic Verses, deemed "blasphemous". He said: "If a foreign government invaded England tomorrow we as Muslims would defend these areas and our way of life. “It's not that I hate English people, or English soldiers who have gone abroad, or that I don't feel for the mothers of these soldiers. But the fact is they should make conscientious decisions as well. "That we must only fight wars which are in our interest, and invading Iraq and then oppressing the Iraqi people and Afghani people, is not the English way," he added. The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella group representing more than 500 Muslim organisations in the UK, said Muslims had a duty to contribute to the "betterment" of the society they lived in.

Muslims more patriotic that Brits?

The findings of the Demos report ‘A place for Pride’ saw that 83 per cent of Muslims said they were proud to be a British citizen compared with the national average of 79 per cent. A spokesman said: "Theologically speaking there is nothing that prevents a Muslim joining the British army. “As Muslims we are ready to show respect to leaders. We may disagree with some of the things she might do and say but that does not give us the right to be insulting." Zeeshan Hashmi, whose brother Jabron was the first British Muslim killed while fighting in Afghanistan, said: “I am privileged living in Britain. One of the key traits of living in this country and being a Brit is that we have free speech. Based on that the Imam can say all of these things living in a very free society. “At the same time being an ex-soldier and having lost my brother in Afghanistan, I can easily sympathise with his views.” Mohammed Beg is to become one of the few British Muslims to risk their lives for their country as he will take on the Communication Systems Operator. Speaking to The Asian Express, he said it was a proud day for him and that he didn’t think about his religion when applying. He said: “My family and friends are really supportive of my choice to join the Army and I have had a lot of compliments crediting my determination and dedication to training. They’re all looking forward to seeing me at my Passing Out parade, we’ve been told that it’s one of the proudest moments in a soldier’s career so I expect it will be quite emotional.”

£11,000 better off

A tax cut for City fund managers will result in the typical worker being thousands better off when retiring, the Treasury has announced. Sajid Javid, a Treasury Minister, told MPs that the “Schedule 19” stamp duty reserve tax would be removed, which applies to some investments sold by funds. He said: “Abolishing Schedule 19 will make UK based funds more competitive, create jobs and improve returns for investors. The government reforms will also mean that ordinary savers could be over £11,000 better off when they retire. “Schedule 19 is a major deterrent to foreign investment funds moving to the UK. Labour’s plans to reinstate the tax would rule out real benefits for hardworking families and could cost thousands of jobs across the UK.”

Fight for lifesaving vaccine goes on Meningitis Now has vowed to continue its fight for a Meningitis B vaccine, after the Government announced that it’s considering new evidence to support its introduction into the childhood immunisation schedule. Meningitis Now Executive Founder, Steve Dayman, lost his son Spencer to meningitis in 1982. Responding to the news, he said: “We know that the Government wants to bring in vaccines that save lives and we welcome the news that they are looking at more evidence to support its introduction. “But as we head into winter, cases of meningitis will increase

and we are concerned that time lost is lives lost. “Meningitis is the disease parents fear most and this vaccine is expected to wipe out at least 73 per cent of the most common form of bacterial meningitis in the UK. We launched our Beat it Now campaign earlier this year to bring in the vaccine as soon as possible. “We know there is strong public support and we are urging everyone to sign our campaign petition now and to urge the government to introduce this new vaccine through the NHS without further delay.”

The Meningitis B vaccine was licensed for use in the UK in January, but in July the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) published a statement saying that evidence was insufficient to substantiate its cost-effectiveness. The charity was asked to comment and responded with its own detailed recommendations. She said: “As a resident of this borough I take my recycling responsibilities very seriously realising that my efforts can save vital public money and the planet from long-term damage. “I have to practice what I preach. However, I was still nervous taking up this challenge. “Putting the right items in the right bin is crucial to prevent waste contamination. Our refuse teams cannot collect bins that contain the wrong items and therefore are contaminated. But if people learn how to get it right first time then it would be better for everyone. That’s the premise of our new educational campaign.” The challenge comes as the council, together with waste partners Recycle for Greater Manchester, launches a new education campaign to get local residents to recycle more of their

However, households that get it wrong will receive red apology tags left on uncollected recycling bins. The red tag reminds residents of the right items that can go in the bin. Residents are asked to remove the wrong items and try and make sure only the right stuff goes in the right bin for the next collection day. Martin Taylor, environmental

service manager at Rochdale Borough Council, added: “We would like to see as many affected residents at our roadshow to answer their questions and discuss their concerns. We’ve uploaded information about the campaign onto our website to provide further assistance. “We hope that people will embrace the campaign, and with our little helpful reminders about what items are right for each recycling bin and by praising individual’s good work, we have high hopes to improve recycling rates and reduce contamination rates.” Crews will monitor recycling tonnage rates and green tag numbers to assess whether the campaign has had any impact. If successful, the campaign could be rolled out across the borough and even Greater Manchester. Arachnophobes, look away now… or maybe not The false widow spider (or steatoda nobilis, to use its posh name), Britain’s most venomous eightlegged creepy crawly, is spreading across the UK. Previously found mainly in southern England, the bug has recently been given a sense of wanderlust by our warmer climate this year. This has meant more sightings and, yikes, more reports of people being bitten across the UK. But how worried should we be? The honest truth is: not very much. Though the false black widow spiders’ bite can be extremely painful, it’s not life-threatening. The bite itself can cause a local burning sensation and swelling which usually calms down to a tingling sensation within a few hours. The fear, however, of this eight-legged creepy crawly is not unfounded. Black widow

spiders are one of only two species of spiders in North America that are known to have venom that is extremely poisonous to humans. So poisonous in fact, that it can in some instances even cause death. A bite from a real black widow spider will also attack the central nervous system and the respiratory system, causing severe pain and agony. It’s no wonder then that the black widow is a spider to be extremely cautious of, and to stay away from whenever possible.

Fake or the real deal?

The experts say that the way to identify the false one from the genuine black widow is to look at its belly – that’s if you haven’t passed out before this step. Here, the true black widow spider will have either a series of red dots, or two small red triangles. If you see these, you know that you are seeing a true black widow spider. If you don’t see them, it’s most likely a

Spinning a yarn

In fairness, the false black widow spider (about the size of a 50p piece) does come from the black widow family and can pack a nasty sting. But, as bug expert Stuart Hine puts it: “A bite is extraordinarily rare, and usually no worse than a bee sting – though a very few people may have an allergic reaction and experience something more severe.”

‘Never been bitten’

Many have breathlessly cited the example of a shopper who collapsed after being bitten ten times. This is true, but it only happened because the false widow had got trapped in his hoodie and was trying to escape. It was a one-off, freak incident. Stuart explains: “These spiders don’t wake up in the morning and dash out of their webs looking for someone to bite. “I’ve handled a lot of them and never been bitten. They only ever attack if they feel trapped.”

‘Not aggressive’

The false widow is thought to have arrived here over 100 years ago from the Canary Islands, in a shipment of bananas. It has a brown bulbous abdomen with cream markings that look spookily like a skull. But, far from being flesh-crazed monsters, they are described by entomologists as ‘ponderous, very slow-moving and not at all aggressive’.

WHAT DO IF BITTEN BY A FALSE BLACK WIDOW Still, it’s best to be prepared. If someone is bitten by a false widow spider, take the following steps:

1. Place a cold compress (such as a frozen bag of peas) on the affected area for ten minutes to minimise the swelling. 2. Monitor the person’s condition, and if it worsens seek medical help.

Musician dropped by band kills three artists and himself

A man has shot and killed three musicians before committing suicide because he was distraught at being told to leave a band, police have said. Iranian Ali Akbar Mahammadi Rafie murdered three fellow countrymen in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday apparently after becoming depressed at no longer being part of the Free Keys. Two of the victims Arash Farazmand, 28, and Soroush Farazmand, 27, were brothers and played in a different band, Yellow Dogs. Drummer Arash and another artist Ali Eskandarian, 35, were killed on the same floor of an apartment, while guitarist Soroush was shot while in bed on a different floor. Ali Eskandarian, shot Musician Ali Eskandarian was also killed. Yellow Dogs’ manager Ali Salehezadeh said Rafie, 29, had not communicated with the victims for a few months because of a minor dispute. He said: ‘There was a decision not to be around each other. ‘They were never that close to begin with. We thought it was all behind us.’ The killer, who had accessed the flat after lowering himself from a roof, was only stopped when a member of the band he had been kicked out of tried to wrestle his rifle away. The scuffle resulted in a neighbour being shot in the arm. Rafie then made his way back to the roof where he took his own life with a gunshot to the head. The injured neighbour is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Security has been put on high alert in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi after mass riots last week resulted in the death of eight people and the subsequent arrest of more than ten others. The Muharram 10 sectarian clashes, between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims, saw clothes shops burned in the Raja Bazaar as well as gunfire from a group of miscreants who opened fire near an Ashura procession. An Ashura procession comes on the tenth day of the

Muharram calendar, and is observed by Shi’a Muslims as a time of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. As well as the fatalities, at least 35 people were injured, many due to gunfire, and now the city has been put on a curfew as the religious period passes. It was lifted shortly in the weekend, yet after protestors against the demonstrated tragedy, and forced the closure of

shops in Raja Bazaar, Bara Market, Sabzi Mandi, Urdu Bazaar and other markets of the city, it was reinstated just hours later. Three of the suspects arrested have confessed to the crime, whilst seven others remain in custody on suspicion of disturbing the peace and rioting. Disturbances were also reported in the Multan and Bhawalnagar districts of Punjab province, with the army being called in to quell unrest.

The move comes a day after the provincial government ordered a major shake-up of law enforcement personnel in the wake of Rawalpindi unrest. Mid-air crisis aboard plane

A plane full of Air India passengers was given a midair scare last week after a door on the plane was not closed properly. The flight from Jeddah to Mumbai, took off on Friday 15th November as normal yet just minutes into the journey, a cockpit panel showed that one of the doors was not properly locked. The Boeing 747 – AI 964 – was immediately flown back to the Saudi Arabian city’s airport whereby the problem was fixed before the 400 passengers and 12 crew

members were allowed to board once more. After a two hour delay, the Air India flight finally took off once again and landed safely in Mumbai with no further incident. Sources close to the airline said as soon as it took off from Jeddah, the cockpit panel showed that the door was not properly locked, prompting the pilot to fly back. These incidents are extremely rare and an Air India spokesman strongly denied any claim that the door was open mid-air.

Life on earth is one of the most contested arguments that has ever been conceived yet scientists in Australia now believe they may have found proof of life stretching back 3.5billion years. Deep within a remote, hot, dry patch of northwestern Australia a new formation has been discovered which could ‘rewrite history’. Scientists estimate the planet formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago; minerals known as zircons, indicating water, and continents existed within 100 million and 200 million years after that on what was still a scalding planet.

The existence of water suggests that life was possible. But what did it look like, and when did it start? The discovery from the Dresser Formation, a much examined outcrop of rocks in Western Australia's Pilbara region, documented in a paper published online this week in the Astrobiology journal may help answer those questions. It centers on something called microbially induced sedimentary structures, commonly shortened to the acronym MISS. This amazing feature is, what some scientists believe, the key to finding the first demonstrable evidence of life on earth.

Cyclone Helen hits India Just weeks after a massive cyclone tore through parts of India’s eastern coast; the country is preparing itself for another battering as Cyclone Helen arrives on land. With winds up to 90km/h and heavy rain, the country’s meteorological department has classed the oncoming weather as ‘severe’ and warned of ‘extensive damage to thatched roofs and huts’. Cyclone Phailin hit the same area last month, resulting in at least 27 fatalities, as winds reached 200km/h. Cyclone Helen is not believed to be as ‘vicious’ as the predecessor yet the

evacuation of thousands of people from coastal areas was completed prior to its arrival. A spokeswoman for the National Disaster Management Agency, Trupti Parule, told the AFP news agency that there is likely to be ‘minor damage to power and communication lines due to uprooting of large trees’ and that twenty rescue teams have been deployed in the flood zone. She added: “Evacuations of thousands has already taken place and provision for food, water and shelter are also on track. [The aim is to have] zero casualties.”

Maldives President Mohamed Waheed stepped down on Friday 15th November as the country begins preparations to host the second round of their presidential elections. In a farewell speech, Waheed reiterated his tenure’s main priority was to enhance the country’s foreign relations, adding that the long standing, non-aligned, independent foreign policy with an Islamic character was changed by the then (Nasheed) government. “Because of this, in global currents, the country's own say was weakened by manifolds. The country was under a position where it could be forced, by changing the Constitution, to do things that its legal framework didn't allow. The government and senior leadership were being asked to resign within few hours, to flout the orders of court, and to stand against those orders,” the outgoing Waheed said. Waheed continued by saying that his government ‘refused to bow down to foreign pressure’, and instead upheld the legal framework and the orders of the constitutional institutions of the country. The second round of the Presidential Election took place on Saturday 16th November with the Maldives Democratic Party candidate and former president Mohamed Nasheed being the frontrunner.

Courageous teen awarded for continuous fight for education EDUCATION: Malala Yousafzai has won a host of awards for her work, striving for greater access to education all around the globe

Malala collects EU’s Sakharov Prize The world’s most famous teenage activist has been recognised once more for her efforts to obtain education for all, after a near-death just over 12 months ago. 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Sakharov prize for Freedom of Thought, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday 20th November, and was presented the award by European Parliament President, Martin Schulz. The Sakharov Prize for free speech is awarded by the European Parliament annually in memory of Soviet physicist and dissident Andrei Sakharov. As well as the prize, the winner of the award receives 50,000 euros, making it Europe's top human rights award. The teenager made headlines last October when she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in Pakistan and has been an avid crusader for educational rights across the globe since. Speaking in front of the EU representatives, Malala ushered the

message of education for all, and reiterated her passion to continue fighting for the cause. Beginning her speech with a famous quote often attributed to the 18th Century French philosopher Voltaire, the courageous teen said: “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” This was followed by a short speech to attending delegates. “I am hopeful the European Parliament will look beyond Europe to the suffering countries where people are still deprived of their basic rights, their freedom of thought is suppressed, freedom of speech is enchained,” Ms Yousafzai said. “Many children have no food to eat, no water to drink and children are starving for education. It is alarming that 57 million children are deprived of education... this must shake our conscience.” Past winners of the award include Nelson Mandela and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.

Q: The action sequences in Bullett Raja look very physically demanding, did you have to get in shape for the film? A: I wasn't fit when I did the Race 2 run. I was okay but I am way fitter now and it looks different. If you are fit your body language changes. You are more agile in the kind of action you do, particularly like in Bullett Raja, it's incredibly physically demanding. It's a great feeling when you are fit and you are looking good on

camera. Q: 100 crore used to be the benchmark for film success in Bollywood but with films like Chennai Express breaking the 200 crore mark, will Bullett Raja break that record? A: Oh I don’t know, it’s so hard to tell. I am really happy with Bullett Raja and how it has shaped up. It’s a really nice movie but who knows how much it will make.

Q: As an actor, how important is your image? A: I don’t know how important it is for an actor to have an image because an image can sometimes stereotype you. There are many other aspects that contribute to an actor’s income such as being a brand ambassador and for those aspects your image is very important, but for acting itself I don’t think it is very important. Q: Would you like to work in Hollywood? A: It depends on the role. Right now in India I am being offered great roles and I love my job because we work really hard at what we do, but we get the time to relax also. So yes, I would like to work in Hollywood if I was offered the right role, and if it did not conflict with my work in India, I am not interested in raising my profile internationally for the sake of it, it would have to be because it interests me first and foremost. Q: In Bullett Raja you take on a completely new avatar, can you tell us a little about the movie and your character? A: The starting point for the film was the kind of films these guys have been making — Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. I don’t

watch too many films, maybe I should watch more, but I’m clued into these films. Somewhere I had put it out that I wanted to do such films and I also wanted to work with Tigmanshu. And it worked out. We had met a few times and we were discussing various scripts when I finally said, ‘Look I leave it to you. I’m okay with whatever you come up with’. Luckily for me, the film we zeroed in on was something really exciting. We were talking about all kinds of films but not this — it’s more of an Indian Scarface. It’s an interesting role, which involves total acting rather than playing an extension of my own self. That’s rare. Q: This is the first time you are doing a film opposite Sonakshi, how was it working with her? A: Sonakshi’s very nice. I like her work in films. She’s genetically an industry child. They are different. They know how to act and behave and Sonakshi seems like a well-brought up girl. Q: You too are an industry child… A: Not at all. I’m an outsider to this industry. I haven’t been brought up in a filmi atmosphere. Not that it’s good or bad — it’s a fact. We were

brought up in a cricketing house. Of course, I remember visiting film sets as a child, but that was different. I had no understanding of what was going on. There’s a way of behaving in the industry which you learn. But people like Sonakshi or Kareena know it from the start. Q: You started working on Bullet Raja just after your wedding. How are you catching up with Kareena? A: It’s just a matter of time management. Your work is also important. You do a little bit of work and then you are at home. You shouldn’t change too much, you must still be able to get on with your own life but then put aside some time to spend with your loved ones too.

From being a homeless ‘no body’, living a harsh reality on the streets, to becoming an overnight vocal sensation, Usman Rehman needs little introduction to the Asian music scene. Sitting on the Asian Express Editor’s red leather sofa, Usman is not only looking very snazzy, he’s refreshingly quick-witted and cheeky too. Many know his story about being homeless and getting involved in all the wrong kind of activities on the streets. Despite this his following have a deep respect for the ‘lad’ for his insane passion to pursue his dream of singing. I ask Usman how a lad from Bradford could possibly become homeless when the city is so abundant with Asian families. “That’s a very, very good question, actually,” replies Usman. “There was a time when I went through a phase where I felt no-one understood me because of a situation at home. I felt I couldn’t connect. I was a young teenager and thought I knew what was best for me. “Once I’d left home, I was so determined to survive on my own, it became a matter of pride that I didn’t ask anyone for help. “Before you knew it, I was in it so thick and deep that I couldn’t ‘just go back home’. “I’ve lived in hostels, in council flats and all sorts. In fact, when I drive back into the city, I still get chills thinking about the temporary places I’ve lived in and the bleak days I’ve had.” The former Lapage school student, who was expelled from the establishment, also attended a private Islamic boarding school for a short time.

Here he again was expelled. He says that being at the Islamic school probably saved him as it taught him respect for elders and an understanding of who he was as an individual and that ultimately he believes that that’s helped him survive the streets. Whatever this young man went through living on his own, his love for writing lyrics and singing stood out above everything. When fate led him to meet Archie Singh-Raud AKA Young Archie, his dream became a reality. With Young Archie’s record label ‘Boiler Room Records’, Usman was catapulted unto the audiences with a fresh take on Noor Jahan’s ‘Jadon Holi Jai’, and Rishi Rich’s magic worked beautifully in making Usman’s debut one not to be forgotten. Now after the huge success of his protege, Young Archie has hit the iTunes World Chart this week and landed in the top 10 with ‘Dil Lutiya’, written by Usman and also featuring his smooth vocals. So when asked about how it feels to essentially have been an overnight hit and the attention he gets from his fans, Usman is very humble about it all. He laughs when I ask him what kind of ‘gifts’ he is sent from his fans. “I get all sorts – but I let Lydia (our assistant) deal with all of that stuff,” laughs Usman, “…but we do get some wired and wonderful stuff sent in including explicit pictures from ladies who either want to be my girlfriend/wife or star in the next music videos. “I recently got sent this very elaborate poem, which was quite dark and seriously romantic, it did scare me a bit to be honest, but this lady was exceptionally articulate with her literary talents and I couldn’t help but admire the piece she’d sent me!”

Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor teamed up for the first time since Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, to create a heartfelt romantic comedy about a shallow man who tries to win back his social activist girlfriend. Sriram Venkat (Khan) has little care in the world and the neglect of his girlfriend, the lovely Dia Sharma (Kapoor), soon leads the avid demonstrator to leave her frustrated partner. Determined to win her back, Siriam adopts a new way of life and finds himself on a political adventure he will never forget.

Q: Where did you shoot on set? A: A lot of the shots were on site. We shot recently in Bhuj in Gujarat, which was a very interesting experience. I was excited to head there as I have never been to Bhuj before. I never had a chance to visit that set, so I went there and I saw the place they’d actually shot. Q: What were your thoughts about not being allowed to curse in this film? A: I believe we should not curse at all and I’ve always tried to avoid cursing in all of my films, that’s why in ‘Delhi Belly’ we tried to cut out as many swear words as we could. Q: For your last film there were reports that you were not okay with the aggressive promotions for it. So in this film would you have any particular consideration for this promotion? A: Considerations? No absolutely not, when I work with Dharma Productions I know I can just leave everything in Karan’s hands and everything will be looked after. Q: Tell us about your character in GTPM? A: You have ‘Sriram’, my character, who is a very selfish, self involved guy; he doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. He wants to have fun, he is a bit of a party boy and opposites attract each other when it comes to Sriram and Dia. Q: Was your character comfortable in the village? A: No, but it is the classic scenario, he turns out to be a city boy and says ‘what’s this place?’, ‘It’s dirty!’, ‘It smells bad what is this?’. Q: How was shooting Dhat Teri Ki in Bangalore? A: Yeah, it was great, I actually grew up in Bangalore, I went to school there and Punit has never been there. So by the time we ended up in Bangalore ready to shoot, I got to tell Punit all about my favourite places, where we should shoot, what location etc…and I got to re-visit all my favourite places, all the places I used to hang out with my friends. Q: Why should people come and watch this film? A: It’s fun, it really is. Punit as a director wants people to have fun whilst watching his film and he has delivered on that.

Kareena Kapoor Q: Are you excited about your lead role? A: I am very excited about my role and I’m expecting the trailer of the movie will be well received by both critics and the audience. Q: Tell us a little about the film. A: Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is a really fun and accessible film, the last film I shot with Imran Khan, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu was a fantastic experience but the film was a little more serious, this film is for the masses. We have three to four item songs that I think everyone will enjoy, I sat and watched the trailer with my husband and we both think it looks great. Q: Tell us a bit about your character A: Her name is ‘Dia’ she works for an Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). She’s basically someone who always stands for a cause, fights for a cause. She’s the sort that doesn’t believe… well she believes in love but she wants someone to stand up for her, believes in what she believes in, which Imran Khan’s character is clearly not as you see in the trailer. Q: Are you similar to the character? Was it hard to act it out? A: No, it was fun playing the part. I don’t feel like I have the responsibility to clean up the streets, I would like that to have happened but it’s not like I took that route. But it was fun to do the role, as it’s a city based character as well as being from the village, where I was very comfortable being in the village. Q: Would you say this is the best movie you’ve starred in? A: I think every film is good in its own way. You can’t really pick and choose one, it’s unfair as everybody is putting a lot of effort into every movie, and everybody works towards a film wanting it to be the best, so I just hope people will enjoy this film. A sleekly-styled Honda FCEV Concept, was revealed this week, which is anticipated to launch in the U.S. and Japan in 2015. The concept car expresses a potential styling direction and is Honda’s next generation fuel cellelectric vehicle. It will feature the world’s first application of a fuel-cell powertrain packaged completely in the engine room of the vehicle. Significant technological advancements to the fuel-cell stack have yielded more than a 60 percent increase in power density while

reducing the size of the stack by 33 percent compared to the FCX Clarity. It is anticipated to deliver a driving range of more than 300 miles with quick refuelling of about three minutes at a pressure of 70 MPa. Showcasing exciting and modern styling, the Honda FCEV Concept features sweeping character lines underscored by an ultra-aerodynamic body. The Honda FCEV Concept will also deliver ample passenger space and seating for five passengers. Honda has led the industry for nearly two decades in the

development and deployment of fuelcell technology through extensive real world testing, including the first government fleet deployment and retail customer leasing programme. The car manufacturer has made significant technological advancements in fuel-cell stack operation in both hot and cold weather, meeting stringent emissions requirements and safety regulations since the introduction of its first generation fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX in 2002.

Boxing ace Amir Khan has hailed stable-mate Andre Ward as one of the world’s very best, after the American boxer overcame the previously unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez last weekend. The super-middleweight world champion, who holds the WBA Super and Ring Magazine titles, made his long-awaited return to the squared circle following an injury to his shoulder which has kept him out of action since September 2012. Winning the bout on a unanimous points decision, Ward extended his unbeaten career to 27 fights and remains the number one ranked Super Middleweight in the world. Now, Amir Khan, the former unified lightwelterweight world champion, has also backed Ward’s unique ability to be just as proficient and believes a possible rematch with British bruiser, Carl Froch, would be a ‘massive’ fight. Ward convincingly beat the man from Nottingham when they met in December 2011 but Froch’s recent triumphs over Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler, plus the bad blood between the pair, has led to calls for them to share the

ring again, something which excites Khan. “If Ward and Froch fought again it would be a huge fight, particularly in Britain. They’ve both excelled in the supermiddleweight division and are the two leading names there now,” Khan said. “They’re both world champions, so it’s a fight which definitely makes sense and one boxing fans want to see. I believe the fight would follow the same course as the first one. For the first time in 36 years, England’s national team has lost two consecutive games at Wembley and to top it all off, the latest defeat came courtesy of the ‘old enemy’. Coming into Tuesday night’s game as underdogs, Hodgson’s men were unable to resist the power of their German counterparts, with Arsenal’s centre-half Per Mertesacker, clinching the only goal of the game. No shots on target and no goals for the second time in less than a week resulted in jeers from sections of the crowd at the final whistle yet Hodgson remains confident that his side will ‘come good’ when the time calls. Speaking after the game he said: “You are always disappointed to get boos but there are not many games when the home crowd don't get the result they are hoping for and there are no boos. “If we want to get acclaim, we are going to have to play better and win matches. We didn't play well enough and we didn't warrant that. “Of course they're disappointed - they came to try and see us win the game and we weren't able to do so. But in the two games we used 20-odd players and didn't attempt to win them by putting our best 11 on the field on both occasions. “We tried to test a lot of players out and use these games as a chance to learn more about squad.”

Dragons flying high The Bradford Dragons enjoyed their third consecutive league victory this weekend as they dismantled an athletic Westminster Warriors team at home, to seal a 70-53 win. The game got off to a fast start with both teams playing a high level of basketball, and it was the visitors that enjoyed an early lead as they lead at the end of the first quarter, 20 – 15. The second saw much of the same quality; fast breaking competition and intricate passages of play, as the Dragons fought their way back with

some impressive defence and an offensive attack led by their American centre Chris McGrew. The Dragons ended the quarter just a couple points adrift of the visitors and clearly had the momentum and the crowd on their side. The second half saw the Dragons increase their defensive pressure as they looked to take a strangle hold on the game with great defensive pressure and full court above the rim basketball. The Dragons ended the third quarter with a two point lead and in

full control of the game, rattling the visiting Warriors who came out in the fourth quarter and managed to score just two points as they faced a solid Dragons defence that would not allow them any chances to get back in to the game. Elsewhere, an improving Dragons Two side lost at home 32 – 55 to Horsforth Hustlers in their Leeds & District league game, whilst the Dragons U15 outfit went top of the EBL North East Conference after beating Rotherham Hawks 101 - 39 at home.
