Child’s play at Christkindelmarkt

Two special mornings of children’s themed activities at one of the city’s most popular festive visitor attractions, have already proved to be a big hit. Held every Sunday from 10.30am to 12.30pm, over 200 children have enjoyed the delights of Leeds Christkindelmarkt’s first two 2014 family events, which each year continues to move from strength to strength. On offer as part of the interactive programme includes music, games, costume characters, face painting and new for this year, arts, crafts and card making with Pop Up and Play. Lord Mayor’s Appeal

Business leaders from across the city have gathered this week to find out more about the Lord Mayor’s charity appeal. As part of the event which was held at Leeds Civic Hall, members of the business community met with the Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr David Congreve and the council’s chief executive Tom Riordan, to hear how their support for this year’s chosen charity, the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal, can make a tremendous difference to the lives of the young people and families it supports. Providing one of the most comprehensive specialist services in the country for children, the Leeds Children’s Hospital looks after youngsters from birth to the age of 16 living across Yorkshire and beyond.

Interactive history lesson

New interactive panels detailing the stories of Leeds’ war-time history have been unveiled at a city cemetery this month. Provided by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), the panels at Lawnswood cemetery are among 500 to be installed at CWGC locations worldwide and feature information about the site of the cemetery and a QR (Quick Response) code. When scanned with a smartphone, the QR Code provides access for further information including the personal stories of some of the casualties buried or commemorated there. Cllr Jack Dunn, Leeds City Council’s lead member for cleaner, safer and stronger communities said: “As we continue to reflect on the beginning of the First World War one hundred years ago, the installation of these new interactive panels will offer a very poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by people from Leeds, and also how they are remembered at Lawnswood Cemetery.”

A group of enthusiastic children from a Leeds primary school turned into junior reporters last week as they learned all about the newspaper industry, with a little help from the Asian Express. As part of the national Children Takeover Day, Managing Editor of the Asian Express, Andleeb Hanif, met with pupils from Iveson Primary School where some serious brainstorming took place on how to write a good news story. During the session, the children identified the differences between ‘gossip’ and ‘news’ and were keen to eagerly share their ideas on proposed headlines and how to approach an article for a newspaper. Throughout the class, children had enjoyed talking about different types of news and were eager to talk about sports and celebrities, as well investigative journalism. Mrs Hanif said she thoroughly enjoyed the day and working with the children. “I was really impressed with this group of youngsters, who were so switched on about the importance

Majestic road closures

This weekend will see the next phase of works being carried out at The Majestic in Leeds city centre, following the devastating fire that took place at the end of September. The roof removal is due to start at midnight on Saturday 29th November and Wellington Street will be closed for the duration of the works which are scheduled for completion by 6am on Tuesday 2nd December, at which time Wellington Street will re-open. The owners of the building, Rushbond, have been working closely with Leeds City Council and other relevant organisations on a traffic diversion plan for the area during this period.

One of the city’s most popular museums is offering people from Leeds and beyond the chance this week to feature in an exciting 2015 exhibition. As part of the ‘How do I Look?’ exhibition at Abbey House Museum, which is set to open its doors from 24th January 2015 until 31st December 2015, a wide range of different fashions and styles that rose to prominence over many decades and centuries will be celebrated. A key element of the exhibition will be various portraits, photographs, paintings and coins depicting different hair-styles, facial hair, make-up and tattoos that have reflected gender, cultures and classes through time. To complement this with a modern angle, on Friday 28th and Sunday 30th November, the team at Abbey House Museum will be offering a unique opportunity for people to show off their own unique style and have their portrait taken in two special drop-in sessions with award-winning photographer Sara Porter.

Cycling year of success

Leeds City Council was this week presented with a signed Great Britain jersey in recognition of a highly successful and special year of partnership with British Cycling. The framed jersey was presented by British Cycling’s Recreation Manager for Yorkshire Dan Goodey to the council’s cycling champion Councillor Roger Harington in honour of a year which has seen the number of people taking part in managed rides in Leeds through the Sky Ride programme rise. The city also hosted another successful mass-participation city centre Sky Ride event in June as well as the globally-admired Grand Départ of the Tour de France in July. The jersey has been signed by Great Britain’s all-conquering Olympic and world champion women’s team pursuit riders Joanna Rowsell, Laura Trott and Dani King as well as Elinor Barker, who has been part of the team for their last two world title successes. It is now displayed for the public to see in the Civic Hall ante-chamber.

CAMPAIGN: Dozens of students demonstrated outside the campuses on Great Horton Road to show their Zero tolerance approach to the harassment of women

Students in Bradford held two demonstrations earlier this week as they protested for both the physical and emotional safety on the Great Horton campuses of the city’s university and college. Tying in with the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, on Tuesday 25th November, a group of academics held banners and spoke of the importance of protection for students in and around the educational sites. Earlier this year, the UBU and College Harassment Survey was launched and more than 200 students have so far responded. The contributions have helped highlight Great Horton Road as a hotspot for the harassment of women, from studying hours to the early hours of a morning. Examples of types of harassment have also ranged from being followed on the way home, to having drinks and even stones thrown at victims. Samayya Afzal, Women’s and Liberation Officer at the University of Bradford Union of Students, said she hoped this year’s initiative would help eliminate such actions against all women.

“We're demonstrating today to encourage people to report harassment, and to challenge the culture of harassment on Great Horton Road.”

“The UBU Women's Forum believes that all harassment is a form of violence against women and should never be tolerated,” she said. “We're demonstrating today to encourage people to report harassment, and to challenge the culture of harassment on Great Horton Road.” Last year, a similar project was run to tie in with the annual awareness day whereby hundreds marched through the city centre to City Park to ‘reclaim the night’. Umar Rafique, Vice President Education and Welfare at Bradford College Students Union, said it was imperative to ensure people felt ‘safe’ at all times on and around campus. “The turnout from our students today was great,” he said after the protest. “We have a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of harassment and violence. “Every student on our campuses has the right to feel and be safe, especially women. We want students to come forward and report harassment, and we will continue our fight in making the streets of Bradford safer.” The protests were held on two occasions on Tuesday between 11.30am to 12.15pm, and again at 5.15pm on Great Horton Road.

The Dixon’s Trinity Academy pupil took on the role of Akil Salim, a ‘cheeky neighbour’ of Tom Parfitt, played by Mr Palin, who finds himself mixed up in Tom’s mysterious life. A member of Baildon’s

Articulate Speech, Acting and Casting group, Ubayd explained what it was like to have landed the role and a little bit more about his character. “At the first audition I was nervous because I had never done anything like it before,” he explained. “But once I got a call back for a second audition, I felt a lot more confident. I also got the chance to meet Aqib (Khan) and run some lines with him which helped me a lot. “When I got told I had got the part I was just really happy.” He added about his character: “Akil is Tom’s nosey, cheeky

neighbour who just likes to get involved in things he maybe shouldn’t. “His brother is a really bad influence on him as well which is very clear in the series.” The role of Ubayd’s brother in the drama is also played by a fellow Bradford actor with Aqib Khan, of East is East fame, taking on the role. Full Monty star, Mark Addy, and Absoltuely Fabulous actress, Julia Sawalha, are also cast in the series, with Mr Palin. Despite working alongside the Monty Python star, Ubayd admitted he had not seen anything the world-renowned actor had starred in before he met him on set. “I had never seen anything really but since meeting him and talking about some of his experiences, I have,” he said. “I watched ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and to see him visit so many places and speak to so many people was just amazing, especially because I was now talking to him as well. “From the first day he was really nice but so was everyone else on set which made it very easy to settle in.” Ubayd’s mother, Makdas Rehman, said the whole family was ‘really proud’ to see her son on television even if it did come as a surprise initially. “It all happened really fast,” she said. “Ubayd only started his drama school around November time last year and was asked if he would like to try out for this BBC drama by his teacher. “From then he had his auditions and filming began almost straight away. “We are all just really proud of him and it is nice to see how much his confidence has developed as well.” Articulate Speech, Acting and Casting currently has pupils cast in the new Dad’s Army film, Hunter’s Prayer - a film set to be released in 2015 featuring Avatar’s Sam Worthington, as well as a number of adverts. Stacey Burrows is principal of the class, which runs drama and public speaking sessions for more than 200 students. After initially gaining her qualifications as a lawyer, she said the appeal of working with children in a field she was passionate about drew her away from the courts and is now a teacher at Beckfoot School in Bingley. Speaking of Articulate Speech, Acting and Casting, she said: “I started off with just two students back in April 2013 and now we have more than 200. “A lot of pupils have landed roles in television and adverts but it doesn’t surprise me that much because Bradford is full of raw talent. “For Ubayd to get the role in Remember Me was fantastic. He is a really good actor and as soon as I heard about the role, I asked him and his mum if they wanted to go for it. Thankfully they did.”

Bradford woman tells how she longs for a child ‘Infertility’ – what a harsh sounding word this is and heartbreaking when you dream of having a family. A young Bradford couple, Mr and Mrs Y (name not disclosed), who’ve been married for just a few years were recently given the news that they needed an egg donor due to the wife’s premature ovarian failure (POF). This means Mrs Y can no longer can produce eggs of her own and therefore the couple need an egg donor if they were to ever hope of becoming parents. When the couple were told that there is a shortage of egg donors from the Pakistani and Indian communities in the UK, they decided to contact the Asian Express to urge women to come forward, anonymously if they so wish. Most women are born with a limited supply of around two million eggs, but this number decreases with age however some women experience infertility issues at a younger age. For all these women it’s a devastating moment when they are told that they can’t have a child. The second moment comes when after months or years of trying and riding the emotional roller coaster they realise that you need to make a choice. These days thanks to medical advances, however, and fantastic

IVF techniques, it is now possible for a woman to donate eggs (the egg donor) to another woman (the egg recipient). Only clinics that have been inspected and are licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) can set up an egg donation programme. Such a programme has existed in Leeds since in 1993. Says Mrs Y: “I cannot explain what it means to us to have a child - it would mean everything. “Both my husband and I would like to plea for the gift of an egg, so that we can have a baby and fulfil our dream of having a family. “In the Asian community, we just don’t talk about things like this. No one wants other people to know their private business, so I totally understand. But women can come forward and remain completely anonymous. “If someone out there is reading this story and understands what having a child means and feels they can help us, please, please call the NHS number below, and become our egg donor angel.”

How to travel

Bradford Council is asking for the public's views on the travel assistance it provides to school and college students, with a farreaching consultation opening on 24th November 2014, which runs until 15th February 2015. The Council has a duty to provide free travel assistance to school pupils who meet certain criteria and it can provide other assistance at its own discretion. Travel assistance is also provided when necessary to post-16 students with special educational needs following an assessment of their needs. Consultation documents are being sent out by post and email and people are also invited to have their say online.

Flu vaccinations deadline

At risk groups across the Bradford district are being reminded the seasonal peak in flu cases is due to start in the next few weeks. The Council’s Public Health team is urging people to make sure they get their flu vaccination if they are entitled to it to protect themselves and others from the virus. The latest national statistics show around two in every three people who are pregnant, children aged two, three and four years old or who have long term health conditions are yet to get this year’s dose of the vaccine. Those aged 65 or older by the 31st March 2015 are also eligible for a free flu vaccination.

Thousands attend reading challenge

The Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge in Bradford Council's Libraries saw more than 4,000 children take part. Held during the school summer holidays it is a national library scheme aimed at primary age children to continue to read through the summer holidays. The theme this year was ‘Mythical Maze’ and every child who joined ‘Mythical Maze’ received a fold-out maze, illustrated by children’s award wining illustrator Sarah McIntyre, on which to record details of the books they had read along with lots of stickers, bookmarks, Mythical Maze game, fridge magnets and wristbands to collect. Every child who read six books received a certificate and medal. This year the numbers taking part went up by 10 per cent, surpassing the national increase of two per cent.

A world-renowned scholar is set to return to Bradford next month following the success of his inaugural visit earlier this year. Maulana Tariq Jameel is due to arrive in the city to address guests at a special invitation-only event at a secret location, promoting tolerance and unity in the wider society. Respected for his simple and modest lifestyle, the much-celebrated scholar has delivered powerful sermons in his calm and soothing manner across the globe and it was Maulana Tariq Jameel who actually requested a return visit to West Yorkshire after the success of his last trip. Shakeel Shah, Director of Shaks Specialist Cars Ltd in Huddersfield, has been at the forefront of organising the event with the help of his associates. As the cousin of Maulana Tariq Jameel, he said he was excited to see him come back to Bradford for another memorable occasion. “Following the success of the last visit, Maulana Tariq Jameel, actually contacted me to ask if we would be able to organise another trip for him,” Mr Shah said. “It was such a fantastic event last time that we were really excited to be told he wants to come back to the city. “A host of business people and

professionals were invited to the event when it was at Orissa and it was a completely different audience and venue to what Maulana Tariq Jameel is used to.” The event is not being held for charity but purely to bring the scholar to Bradford to deliver a sermon for the benefit of invited guests. Following his last visit to Bradford, Maulana Tariq Jameel spoke to the Asian Express about the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the importance of compassion starting at home He said: “It’s inspiring and commendable for people outside the conflict zone to be so deeply moved on what’s going on. “I’d like to remind people that whilst standing for injustices upon a people anywhere in the world, we keep a balance of what’s happening in your own homes – love, education, health, prosperity. One cannot help someone else if their own house is not in order. “I had the opportunity to visit a prison in Preston, and am hugely sorrowed to see how many of the inmates are Muslim. I have to raise the question and ask - what have we been teaching our children? “Speak to your children, be involved in their lives at every level, speak to them with love and develop a relationship of mutual trust, so that you can guide them in the right direction and avoid them from falling into the wrong hands.”

Handing over the keys Tenants have been officially handed the keys to their newly built council homes which are just some of the 1,000 properties being delivered as part of an ambitious drive to provide new council homes in the city. Leeds City Council leader Councillor Keith Wakefield had the chance to meet a number of tenants at the new homes, which are located in Beeston Hill. Overall, the council plans to build 1,000 new council homes across the city by 2018/19, with 275 of these properties being built in Beeston Hill and Holbeck. Another 113 new homes are in progress in Little London, and senior councillors and council staff recently visited the area to see these and some of the properties currently benefitting from extensive refurbishment.

In total, 1,300 homes are being refurbished across all three areas to revitalise the communities as part of the housing regeneration project. Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Being able to present tenants with the keys to their brand new council home has given me a real sense of pride in what we’ve been able to achieve on their behalf. “This is not just about bricks and mortar; by investing in council housing on this scale we are improving the quality of life for residents who move into these homes and helping them create a community they can be proud to live in. “With the housing regeneration project we have tangible proof of our vision of Leeds as the best city to live, the best city for health and well-being and the best city for children.”

£400,000 grant

Kirklees Council has successfully bid for £400,000 of funding to help some of the most vulnerable young people in the district. The money will be used on the ‘Kirklees Cares’ project so that looked after children receive extra support when they are preparing to leave care. The funding comes from central government and is part of the Transformation Challenge Award, which seeks to improve people’s health, education and job prospects and reduce the demands on public services. Cllr Jean Calvert, Kirklees Council Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “Children and young people who have been in care have often had a difficult start in life. We do everything we can to support them and this funding is another step in enhancing their life chances.”

International man-hunt Rapist search expands to France

The search for a man from Bradford, who fled the country midway through his trial, has spread as far as France according to West Yorkshire Police. 21-year-old Wakar Akhtar was due to appear at Bradford Crown Court earlier this week charged with conspiracy to rape in relation to a case earlier this year. On 26th May, Akhtar, alongside three other men, plotted to abduct a teacher from her minicab in Leeds before carrying out a sexual assault. The victim lost consciousness after drinking with friends in Leeds and awoke to find her arm being forced behind her back as she was raped on a public bench in Bradford. The three other men were all convicted at the city’s Crown Court earlier this week and sentenced to 17 years each. They were private hire driver Tamseel Virk, 42, of Marten Road, Canterbury, Bradford; Akhtar’s uncle, Azad Raja, 38, of Hudson Avenue, Canterbury, and Najeem Ul-Saeed, 31, of Beaumont Road, Girlington. Akhtar remains on the run since absconding from trial and is said to have travelled from Dover to Calais just hours after his court appearance. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Snow, confirmed that West Yorkshire officers were now working with authorities in France, via Interpol, to bring Akhtar back to Britain. He said: “The hunt continues for Wakar Akhtar and we are working closely with the French authorities. “We are determined to bring Akhtar to justice. He has been found guilty of a despicable and vile crime against a vulnerable, lone female, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure that he is found and brought back before the courts to serve his sentence. “There will be people out there who know him and who may know his current whereabouts. A pair of generous fundraisers are aiming to bring a smile to the faces of children in local hospitals by giving them a sweet treat this Christmas. Sarah Royal, from Idle, Bradford, and Qais Ashfaq, from Leeds, are currently collecting selection boxes for the children’s ward at Bradford Royal Infirmary. Following a similar campaign held at the end of 2013 by Sarah and her friends, the 25-year-old decided to take on the challenge once again this year in the hope of spreading the gift-giving spirit. Asking for donations of a selection box, or cash to purchase the products, before the 19th December ‘delivery day’, the collection continues to gain momentum in the build up to the holidays. Pupils at a primary school in Bradford have been climbing into the saddles of their new bikes this week after being given a free set of wheels by a local community group. More than 25 Children from Lapage Primary School’s Nursery were just the latest recipients of bikes from the On Trak team’s ‘Be Safe, Keep Safe’ project. The initiative, operating out of St Enoch’s Garage in Wibsey, has seen over 500 bikes handed out to schools and youth groups since establishing three years ago. Collecting them from Bradford Council, the garage then restores the bicycles to a quality standard, with the help of young volunteers, before they are sent off to be given a new lease of life. Asif Iqbal and Amrik Singh are two learning mentors at Lapage who were on hand to help give out the bicycles to children and parents on Wednesday 26th November.

The charity aspect of St Enoch’s Garage is something Mr Woods is very passionate about and said he has been helping restore bikes, with the help of students, for three years now. “We can get around 100 bikes a month handed over to us from Bradford Council of

With just over one month left to go until Christmas day arrives, a class of young pupils from Leeds headed to the city centre last week to learn a bit more about what the holidays mean to the British public. Children from Bankside Primary School, along with teachers and parents, headed out to the streets for a look at the Christmas lights which were officially switched on Tuesday 13th November. The young school representatives visited Trinity Leeds Shopping Centre and the Victoria Quarter amongst other popular sites. Taking in all the festivities, Early Years Foundation Stage teacher, Mr Salik Miah, said it was important for children to understand British customs, traditions and festivals, even if some families do not celebrate the same holidays. “The majority of children at our school come from a Bangladeshi background and

then Pakistani so there is a lot of different cultures in the classroom,” Mr Miah said. “We decided to take them to see the lights because a lot of them would not get the chance to see them for whatever reason, and we wanted to help build up their knowledge of British life.” He added: “We have also held Christmas-related learning activities in classes and talked about the holidays.” Despite being in the bottom one per cent of the most deprived areas in the country, Bankside Primary was rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ features in 2009 and has subsequently earned a valued status as one of the top educational institutions in Harehills. The three-form entry school currently caters for almost 700 children, from all faiths and backgrounds, with almost 100 staff members on hand to ensure every child receives the utmost attention.

Outstanding Teachers and pupils at a primary school in Bradford have been celebrating this week after receiving a glowing reports from the education inspectors, Ofsted. Frizinghall Primary School was to be ‘Good’ with found ‘Outstanding’ features following a visit by officials earlier this year. In a glowing report the Ofsted inspectors judged all areas in the Bradford Council school to be good with outstanding leadership and management and also gave the ‘school’s systems for keeping pupils safe and secure’ its top accolade. The report says: “The inspirational headteacher is very well supported by a strong team of leaders and an excellent governing body. They have ensured that standards have risen consistently in the last three years.” Pauline Chilvers, the ‘inspirational headteacher’ who was singled out by assessors, said it was a great achievement to see the results and all 400-plus children and staff should be proud of themselves. Ms Chilvers said: “We are delighted with this latest report which has seen us sustain the good overall judgment since the last inspection. “We are particularly pleased with the outstanding elements and also that ‘parents have a very positive view of the school and hold it in high

regard’. “To see a school with such a mixed community as ours succeed as well is very pleasing for our local community.” Also highlighted in the official report was the quality of the curriculum on offer, described as ‘exciting’ and one which ‘prepares pupils well for life in modern Britain’. The quality of the teaching was also praised, form the leadership roles to the speed of learning. David Servant, Chair of Governors at the school, said: “I am pleased that the Ofsted inspectors have rated Frizinghall Primary a good school and recognised the achievements and progress made by the pupils. “This has been made possible by the dedication and hard work of the headteacher , staff and governors of the school.” Meanwhile, Cllr Ralph Berry, Council’s Executive Bradford Member for Children’s Services, said it was great news for the two-form entry establishment. “This is great news for Frizinghall Primary School and all the pupils, staff, governors, parents and the wider community who have worked so hard to bring about this positive outcome should be justly very proud,” he added.

Monday 1st December marks the start of Empty Homes Week, and Calderdale Council is supporting the Empty Homes Agency’s campaign to reduce the number of long-term empty homes. Empty homes can cause a number of problems, especially if they are allowed to go into decline. As well as being a wasted resource, they can attract vandalism, crime and spoil the look of an area. They can also reduce the value of neighbouring properties by up to 20 per cent. Calderdale Council has pledged its support to the Empty Homes Agency’s campaign. Over the last four years around 800 empty homes have been brought back into use, and Calderdale has benefitted from grants of over £2million as part of the government’s New Homes Bonus scheme, for local councils who increase the number of homes and their use.

Poor student drop-out risk is ‘higher’

Poor university students are more likely to drop out and less likely to graduate with a good degree, even if they started their course with similar grades to their richer peers, according to research. It suggests that those from deprived backgrounds may do less well in higher education because they did less well at school, and also that they may need more support while at university to make sure they leave with decent results. The study, published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) analysed information on English students who began studying at a UK university between 2004/05 and 2009/10. Researchers found that in general, students from the most disadvantaged homes are 8.4 percentage points more likely to drop out of university within two years of starting their course, compared to those from the most advantaged backgrounds. They are also 13.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree within five years, and 22.9 percentage points less likely to graduate with a first or 2:1. There are still "significant" differences even when a student's own grades are taken into account, the study found. Among students who began university with similar grades to take the same degree course, those from the poorest backgrounds are still 3.4 percentage points more likely to

drop out of their studies than those from the richest homes. And they are still 5.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree and 3.7 percentage points less likely to achieve a first or 2:1. The findings indicate that a key part of any measures to cut inequalities in the degree chances between the richest and the poorest students should be to "increase the attainment of those from the poorest families earlier in the school system," the study says. It also argues that the fact that youngsters from deprived backgrounds do less well on average at university than their richer peers, even when they have similar prior attainment, suggests that poor students may need extra support at university to enable them to succeed. Study author Claire Crawford said: "Our research highlights that there are large differences in university outcomes by socioeconomic background, a substantial proportion of which can be explained by differences in attainment earlier in the education system. "While improving the attainment of students from disadvantaged backgrounds at school is likely to aid their performance at university as well, we find non-negligible differences in university outcomes between students from different socio-economic backgrounds at the same university, studying the same subject, who arrived with the same grades. "This suggests that universities may wish to focus on improving the progression and performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as widening access."

Grange student and Head Boy Sibtul Shah, who was placed at the University of Huddersfield, said the placement had proven to be: “A great opportunity to gain experience in a professional environment and to learn about an area of science which I knew very little about.” He continued: “Hard work and dedication are two fundamentals that lead to success but without experience you are limited.

“Working in the Surface Metallurgy department at the University of Huddersfield was really interesting and enabled me to use and learn about new scientific equipment and methods. “Most importantly, the experience has helped me develop skills which will prepare me for university such as research and report writing techniques.” Anne Dubickas, Head of Science at Grange Technology college added her praises for all the students involved.

“They have put in a great deal of work and completed their placements in such exemplary fashion,” Ms Dubickas said. “They all enjoyed the challenge and worked hard throughout to complete their Gold Crest awards. “Hopefully they have learned more about the subjects and about what they would like to do in the future. They are all a credit to themselves and the school and we are delighted that to be able to offer another four placements in 2015.”

Unstunned meat PERSUADING: MP Neil Marsh is urging Muslim and Jewish communities to stun more animals

Meat sold in British shops should be labelled to say whether the animal it came from was stunned at slaughter as many killed in accordance with religious rites are not, an MP has said last week. Conservtive party’s Neil Parish (Tiverton and Honiton) also asked the Government to look at ways to persuade Jewish and Muslim communities to stun more animals at slaughter. Mr Parish highlighted a report by the all-party parliamentary group for beef and lamb that he chairs, which called for research

and demonstrations that showed animals can be stunned and their slaughter remain compliant with religious beliefs. For both halal and kosher meat, animals are killed by cutting their throats, often without prestunning them. Speaking before his Westminster Hall debate on the subject, Mr Parish said: "The whole crux of it is to bring about more animals to be stunned at slaughter and we are really trying to seek from the Jewish and Muslim communities ways in which we can stun more animals at slaughter. "In particular for large animals, and also whether animals can be stunned before slaughter or just

after the cut. "I would also like just a clear label saying this meat has been stunned at slaughter or not stunned at slaughter." A survey showed the vast majority of British vets believe consumers need to be better informed about animal welfare and slaughter methods. According to the British Veterinary Association (BVA), 94% of vets believe UK consumers of meat and fish should be better informed about slaughter methods. Just 11% of vets believe the public understands the difference between stunned and nonstunned slaughter.

An inquest heard last week how a mother-of-three went to Bradford Royal Infirmary for a routine gall bladder surgery but passed away 'after surgeons had left holes in her stomach'. Azrum Begum, 54, from Bradford, died in 'astronomical pain' after the operation turned into a disaster, which lead to multiple organ failure after a series of errors in the operation. Damage had been caused by a pen-like instrument used during gall bladder surgery, which led to her death two days after the procedure. The hearing heard how Mrs Begum, was chided by nurses who told her to 'stop being a baby and grow up'. They added that the staff on the ward, annoyed by Mrs Begum's cries of pain, refused to give her more medication and switched off her bedside bell to reach medical staff. The nurses later annoyed by cries of pain had refused to give Mrs Begum medication. Mrs Begum’s grieving son Mohammed Faraz told the inquest that his mother had been left in 'astronomical pain'. He explained that because of his mother’s rheumatoid arthritis she had a high pain threshold but she was behaving like a child after the operation. Mrs Begum's eldest son, Mohammed Ayaz, said: “It was like the nurses were calling my

mum a wimp. “One nurse even said to her, “Come on now, I've had this operation and it wasn't so bad.”” It was not until the morning after the operation that nurses alerted staff and an urgent CT scan was ordered. Communication break-downs meant Mrs Begum's surgical team were not informed the mother was being kept in hospital because of pain, and so she did not get a post-operative review after surgery. Meanwhile, Mrs Begum's urgent scan was delayed by hours after a porter couldn't find her after she was moved to another ward. Coroner Dominic Bell said there had been a catalogue of deficiencies in care given to Mrs

Begum in her last hours. Surgeons repaired the holes in her stomach, which the coroner concluded were most likely caused by surgical instruments in her previous operation. Bradford Teaching Hospital Trust's interim director Dr Robin Jeffrey expressed deep regrets for the way Mrs Begum was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary. He said the Trust had learnt a number of lessons and made changes since Mrs Begum's death - such as better checks on patients recovering from surgery.

Changes included supervising trainees, more observations and better checks on patients recovering from surgery. Recording a narrative verdict, Dr Bell said there had been a number of deficiencies in care but added he was satisfied with investigations since carried out by the NHS Trust. Mrs Begum’s family have said that they satisfied that the deficiencies in care were identified during the inquest and that they have been appropriately addressed with remedial action.

A University of Huddersfield professor, who established an annual award in memory of his late fiancé, is delighted to see it ‘going home’ in 2014, to a talented student from Hong Kong. The Yip Sau Kuen Award was instituted in 2010 following the death of Cecilia Yip, a former Huddersfield student who returned to work in her native Hong Kong, where she developed a successful social work career. One of her Huddersfield lecturers was Eric Blyth, who met up with Cecilia again after he was appointed a visiting professor at the city’s Polytechnic University. A relationship developed and the couple planned to marry. But she became ill and the couple managed only an informal exchange of rings before her death from cancer, at the age of 46. As a tribute, Professor Blyth devised an award to commemorate the courage shown by Cecilia – the name by which she was known in English – and her determination to serve others. The Yip Sau Kuen Award is now bestowed annually on a University of Huddersfield social work student who has shown outstanding personal resilience to complete their studies. The 2014 recipient is 20-yearold Vivian Chan, from Hong Kong, who is a second-year student at the University of Huddersfield. Passionate about social work,

Vivian’s parents are both nurses. “They have always taught me to be patient and care for others,” she said. “I love doing voluntary work and in Hong Kong volunteers work a lot alongside social workers, so I got to know the profession.” The dedicated student said she was delighted to win the £500 Yip Sau Kuen Award, especially because of its moving origin, and paid tribute to Professor Blyth. “He is a really good teacher who gives so much support. And he knows so much about social work development in Hong Kong as well, so he gives me a lot of guidance,” she said. Professor Blyth added that the award is given to a student whom in the opinion of the social work teaching team at the University, ‘has demonstrated the resilience and tenacity that so much characterised Cecilia’. He recalls his intention to settle in Hong Kong with his fiancé, to whom he became

engaged in February 2010 before illness struck, and Cecilia – who had become Assistant Director of the organisation Youth Outreach in Hong Kong – died in May of that year. “During her alltoo-short life, Cecilia was a true ambassador both for the University of Huddersfield and for her chosen profession of social work,” he said. “This was evident from the several hundred people, including many current and former service users, who attended her funeral. Leeds youngsters learn importance of road safety

Pupils across Leeds have been doing special lessons about how to stay safe on and near roads last week, as part of national Road Safety Week. Leeds City Council’s Influencing Travel Behaviour (ITB) team has been visiting schools throughout the campaign week to teach kids of all ages about the importance of road safety and looking out for each other on the roads. The team have visited St Peter’s, Shakespeare, Corpus Christi and Ebor Gardens primary schools to deliver age-appropriate lessons on road safety. Every pupil in every class at these schools has received either classroom-based lessons, playground-based cycle training or on-road pedestrian skills training. The classes for younger children take the form of an interactive session with a picture board with stories and characters, whereas older children are provided with pedestrian training relevant to their age. These schools have also been provided with resource packs as well ‘hi-vis’ giveaways for pupils and parental booklets for each child to take home. Pupils from Shakespeare Primary School were also treated to a special guest when Kerby, the council’s Road Safety Hedgehog, visited to take part in a

special Road Safety assembly. Councillor Asghar Khan, support executive member for transport and the economy joined Kerby at Shakespeare primary school to see the road safety classes in action. He said: “It is very important that children are able to learn about their own responsibilities when they are out and about near the road, and the younger we can start teaching them about road safety the better.

‘A brighter future for Leeds’ children’

Laying the foundations A significant step in the construction of a new mosque in Leeds took place this past week as the foundation stone was laid by an honourable guest scholar from Pakistan. Hanif Jalandhari, general secretary of the largest federation of Islamic Seminaries, Wafaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, was joined by representatives in Roundhay as dozens gathered to witness the start of the latest construction phase. Located on the corner of Hares Avenue and Shepherds Lane, when complete, the new Masjid-eQuba building will add to current developments which already exist in two separate standing buildings. On Friday 21st November, Quranic scripture was read out on site before a prayer took place, with the renowned scholar at the centre of the service.

Mr Jalandhari was then joined by founding member of the Masjid-e-Quba, Hafiz Mohammed Hassan and Imam Ubaid-Ullah, to officially lay the first stone in front of a strong crowd of onlookers. Mohammed Hanif, trustee at the Masjid-e-Quba, said to see the building finally starting to take shape was a big step and he was now excited to officially open the doors in the Spring of 2015. “We started developments here back in 2001 when this site used to be a garage,” Mr Hanif said. “It was soon changed into a school for Islamic studies yet when space started to run out we had to expand and that is where this mosque has come in. “These plans came around about four years ago and once we got the planning and structure in place it was a big achievement as we were on our way to this

creation.” Mr Hanif says he hopes to welcome the first guests into the new mosque in February or March next year and hopes it will prove popular with all the local community, especially the youths. “This is a very important place for the local Asian community as it is a place of culture,” he added. “Our education classes have been helping to prepare children for the life ahead of them since we set up and will continue to do so when this mosque is finished.” Mushtaq Mir, a language teacher and part of the management team at the Masjide-Quba, reiterated his colleague’s view. “With this new site I see a brighter future for Leeds’ children where we can encourage them to come off the streets and benefit from learning inside this new space,” he said.

n the case of Interflora Inc & Another –v- Marks and Spencer plc and Another, M&S paid Google AdWords for advertisements for its flower delivery service displayed on the search engine results page when internet users searched for “interflora” and similar terms. This is known as keyword advertising. Interflora brought proceedings against M&S for infringing its trade marks. The High Court proceedings were lengthy and required a reference to the European Court of Justice as to whether the use of a trademarked term as a keyword amounted to trademark infringement. The ECJ concluded that if the national court decided that the use of the Interflora trade mark as a keyword led internet users to believe the service offered by M&S was part of the Interflora network, then the trade mark’s function in indicating origin would be damaged. The High Court, using the criteria set down by the ECJ, found that M&S had infringed Interflora’s trade marks by using them as keywords. This was because the adverts did not enable the reasonably well informed and reasonably observant internet users to work out (or only with difficulty) if the service referred to in the adverts originated from the trade mark owner; a business connected to it; or a third party. The High Court found that M&S had infringed Interflora’s trade mark because a significant proportion of consumers who searched for “interflora” and were presented with M&S’ adverts were wrongly led to believe that the M&S

flower delivery service was part of the Interflora network. The Judge found that internet users today were more likely to appreciate the distinction between natural search results and paid advertisements on Google’s search engine results pages, as opposed to back in 2008 which was the relevant time period in this case. Nevertheless, even now, a significant proportion of individuals would not appreciate that distinction. The Judge was not satisfied that the public would be aware that M&S were not part of the Interflora network and indeed were in competition with it; there was nothing in the M&S adverts to inform the reader that M&S were not part of the Interflora network; and given the nature of the Interflora network, it would make it particularly difficult for an individual to determine whether M&S were part of that network or not in the absence of any indication in the advertisement. It was noted that a feature of the Interflora network was that members traded under their own names and had commercial tie-ups with several large retailers, including Tesco. This made it even more plausible that a connection existed between the two. The Court made it clear that whilst M&S had infringed on the facts of this case, keyword advertising is not inherently or inevitably objectionable from a trade mark perspective. Rather, ECJ case law has recognised that the use of keyword advertising encourages competition. The installation of a nine-foot tall statue of Gandhi in London’s Parliament Square has just received its biggest single donation of a whopping £100,000. The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust say the donation is a huge way towards meeting the £750,000 budget needed to make and erect the statue. The plan for the statue, which will be positioned directly in front of the Houses of Parliament was proposed by the Chancellor George Osborne and former Foreign Secretary William Hague, during a visit to India in July this year. It is hoped to be in place by early 2015. The sculpture by Philip Jackson, who has also created memorials to Bomber Command, the Gurkhas and the Korean War, depicts Gandhi wearing a shawl and traditional dhoti skirt, with his hands clasped. Billion pound lawsuit A property tycoon has launched a huge lawsuit in the High Court as he seeks to gain £2.2billion pound in compensation for irreparable damages to his reputation and business. UK-based property mogul Vincent Tchenguiz said on Thursday he had filed a 2.2 billion pounds ($3.5 billion) lawsuit against accountancy firm Grant Thornton, Icelandic bank Kaupthing and three individuals in the High Court. The lawsuit alleges they conspired to instigate a Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation into him and his business activities, which was subsequently dropped in 2012 after a series of blunders. Tchenguiz's brother Robert, who was also investigated by the SFO and briefly arrested in 2011 alongside Vincent, told Reuters by email that he would join the lawsuit. Iranian-born Vincent and Robert, who are well known in London's high society, have said

that the botched SFO investigation linked to the 2008 collapse of Kaupthing caused lasting damage to their reputations and businesses. Earlier this year, they settled a 300 million pound damages claim against the SFO, which averted a civil trial and a further public airing of the agency's handling of the case, with a 4.5 million pound out-of-court deal. The individuals named in Tchenguiz's latest claim are Stephen John Akers, Hossein Hamedani and Johannes Runar Johannsson. Akers and Hamedani are both partners at Grant Thornton, while Johannsson is an Icelandic lawyer. The failed Icelandic bank had financed Vincent Tchenguiz to the tune of 1.7 billion pounds. Dave Whelan, owner of Championship side Wigan Athletic, has been charged by the FA for insulting Jewish and Chinese people in a newspaper interview. “It is alleged the Wigan Athletic chairman breached FA Rule E3 (1) in that his comments were abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute,” the FA said in a statement on Thursday. “It is further alleged that this is an ‘Aggravated Breach’ as defined by FA Rule E3 (2) as it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief.” The FA added that Whelan had until 5th December to respond to the charge. Employment rate for people from black and minority ethnic background highest on record Employment for people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds has reached a record high with unemployment falling across all ethnic groups, according to new official statistics. The figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that there are 166,000 more people from BME backgrounds in work compared to this time last year, bringing the total number to a record high of more than 3 million. The employment rate has also hit a new record high of 62.5%, a 2.3 percentage point rise over the last year. Thanks to a range of government schemes designed to help people into jobs, more than 50,000 opportunities have already been taken up by people from BME backgrounds. These include schemes that offer work experience, employer-led placements, or help starting up a new business – however Ministers and advisers recognise

that a gap still remains compared with the rest of the population, which is why Jobcentres will continue to deliver tailored support specific to local communities. Unemployment has fallen across all ethnic groups, including people from a Black, African and Caribbean background as well as those from a Chinese, Pakistani and Mixed backgrounds. The Prime Minister said: “I warmly welcome these latest figures showing record employment rates for people of black and minority ethnic heritage. And along with reductions in the number of young people not in training, education or employment, this shows our long-term economic plan is delivering for people of all backgrounds and ages. “Over 160,000 more black and minority ethnic people are in work today compared to this time last year, with more than 50,000 opportunities being taken up on

government-backed employment and training schemes designed to help people into jobs. “Alongside this our enterprise scheme has helped budding entrepreneurs from black and minority ethnic backgrounds set up over 6,000 new businesses this is not just great news for those individuals and their families, but it’s great for businesses and the economy too. “That is why this government is committed to go further still and make sure barriers are lifted and opportunities are opened to people of all backgrounds. This is how we will truly ensure we have a brighter and more secure economic future.” Minister for Employment Esther McVey said: “We’ve seen record numbers of people share in the improving jobs market as the economy continues to grow – and this includes people from all backgrounds and all regions across the country. “More and more people are

6th Form Islamic society at London school causes concern An east London Church of England school, which serves a large Muslim community and was previously graded outstanding is expected to be put into special measures over concerns about its sixthform Islamic society. The school in Stepney - Sir John Cass Foundation and Redcoat school, in Stepney, east London, is believed to have failed an Ofsted inspection due to its sixth Form Islamic society’s Facebook page which had links to a radical preacher. It is also claimed that the sixth form society set up a YouTube channel which was not adequately monitored. Now the education watchdog will publish reports on seven schools after carrying out a series of

unannounced inspections in Tower Hamlets, and is expected to include a number of independent Islamic schools. The no-notice inspections were carried out at the request of the Department for Education and are not part of the standard inspection regime. It follows the Trojan Horse investigations into allegations that schools in Birmingham were being targeted by groups promoting a hard-line Muslim agenda. Allowing the segregation of boys and girls in play areas has also been highlighted but this has been in place for several years. Previously the Ofsted report commended how students from "diverse cultures work so well together, having developed excellent codes of behaviour and respect for one another in and out of lessons". "This is reflected in the very low level of racial incidents and exclusions for a school of this size," said inspectors. Ofsted says more than 90% of pupils at the school are from ethnic minority groups, with the majority from Bangladeshi backgrounds. Tower Hamlets council said it could not comment until the reports for all the schools are published.

But director of education Robert McCulloch-Graham said: "We note that of the schools inspected, only one is a publiclyfunded maintained school. "As is common practice, we will work with the leadership of this school to address any issues identified by Ofsted. "As a local education authority, we have no jurisdiction whatsoever over teaching and standards at independent faith schools. This is Ofsted's area of responsibility. "We do, however, have responsibility for safeguarding all

children in the borough and have always exercised our safeguarding duties to the full. "We are working closely with Ofsted and the Department for Education after their recent inspections and we will of course act on the findings of the reports. We will continue to work with Ofsted and the DfE to address any issues, potential or otherwise. "The council and its partners have worked extremely hard to build the cohesive community that is Tower Hamlets and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that this continues."

A British man headed to his honeymoon on a Cubabound flight instead found himself grounded in Bermuda after drunkenly threatening the flight crew, whilst his wife continued to Cuba without him. Mohammed Khelya, from Blackburn, Lancashire, had been drinking from a bottle of duty-free vodka before quarrelling with his wife on Monday. He was subsequently taken in handcuffs to the rear of the aircraft and forced its unscheduled landing, prosecutors said. Appearing on Tuesday at a court in Hamilton, Bermuda's capital, Khelya pleaded guilty to being drunk on the aircraft and to threatening flight staff. “I don't know how I'm going to forgive myself,” he said in court. “I don't know how she's going to forgive me.” The 22-year-old and his wife

Claw-hammer attacker jailed A Birmingham cleaner has been jailed for ten years after attacking a young woman with a hammer at his Winson Green home last year. Seyd Selym appeared before Birmingham Crown Court on 27th November, where he was sentenced, having admitted wounding his 25-year-old friend at his Aberdeen Street maisonette on 25th September 2013. The 44-year-old met his victim around a month before the attack and on the day he assaulted her, they happened to bump into each other in Handsworth. They returned to his flat to have a drink together before Selym attacked his younger friend, with a claw hammer, in the bedroom. The woman recalled how she’d asked to share a drink when Selym asked her if she wanted a fight - seconds later she blacked out having suffered a blow to the head. She woke in a pool of blood with a serious head injury, before drifting in and out of consciousness for around 24 hours. DC Sara Caldwell, from Force CID in Birmingham, who investigated the case, said: “This was a violent and viscous attack, during which Selym repeatedly rained blows on his friend’s head with a hammer. “She sustained a fractured skull, a fractured finger both requiring surgery. “The true motivation for the attack is something we will not know, however the cocktail of alcohol and drugs consumed in the flat prior to the attack is likely to have

Anger and confusion has been sparked with the recent United Arab Emirates (UAE) "terrorist organisations" list which includes several prominent Western Muslim charities and civil society groups. Islamic Relief, a much-respected UK-based international aid agency; the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation in the US; and the Muslim Association of Britain are among some of the international associations and foundations included on the list which is dominated by groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood but also includes a number of Shia Muslim movements. Islamic Relief, which has over 100 global branches and delivers aid in partnership with the UN agencies such as the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), has also faced accusations of association with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has links to the Muslim Brotherhood. Islamic Relief has repeatedly denied the claims. Representatives from the British groups have spoken of their shock at being named on the list and some say they are considering

legal action. The governments of Norway and the UK also confirmed they are seeking official clarifications from the UAE. Islamic Relief, which partners with the UN and is a member of the UK's Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) grouping, said that they “categorically refute any allegation of links to terrorism”. They organisation has stated that they assume that their inclusion on the UAE list which

was drafted in August this year but released on 15th November, is a mistake and that they will be seeking clarification from the UAE Embassy on this matter, with a view to having this wrongful listing removed. There has been some confusion over the translation of the names on the list, which appeared differently in Arabic and English. In one translation shared by the UAE state news agency, MAB was

referred to in English as the Islamic Association in Britain. A spokesman for the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), which in 2013 gave GB£3.2million (US$5million) to Islamic Relief, has said that all of their funding to UK charities is subject to strict controls to ensure it is used only as intended. They are now seeking further clarity from the Emiratis on their rationale for some of

The anti-terrorism laws defines a terrorist offence as "any action or inaction made a crime by this law and every action or inaction made a crime by any other law if they are carried out for a terrorist cause". ‘Substantial progress’ made yet 12-year dispute continues This is the current situation Iran and six other world powers currently face after yet again failing to come to an agreed conclusion regarding the 12-year dispute over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. It was hoped that an agreement would be reached on Monday 24th November yet after a meeting with representatives from some of the world’s top powers, a historic deal was not conceived. Instead, a further seven months have been given to overcome the deadlock in the hope of securing an agreement on the substance of a final accord by the end of June 2015. “We have had to conclude it is not possible to get to an agreement by the deadline that was set for today and therefore we will extend the JPOA to June 30, 2015,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told reporters at the end of the talks. Hammond was referring to the titled ‘Joint Plan of Action’ which was agreed to between the six nations and Iran a year ago in Geneva under which Tehran halted higher level uranium enrichment in exchange for a limited easing of sanctions, including access to some frozen oil revenues abroad. Hammond said the expectation was that Iran would continue to refrain from sensitive atomic activity. He added that Iran and the powers ‘made some significant progress’ in the latest round of talks, which began last Tuesday in the Austrian capital. Hammond said that there was a clear target to reach a ‘headline agreement’ of substance within the next three months and talks would resume next month.

Turkey PM, ‘Men and women not equal’

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told a meeting on women's rights on Monday that gender equality was contrary to nature and said feminists did not recognise the value of motherhood. Erdogan, whose conservative, Islamist ideology frequently raises hackles in more liberal segments of Turkish society, said women's "delicate" nature meant it was impossible to place them on an equal footing with men.

An Iranian official confirmed the extension, as did Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who echoed Hammond's comments about "substantial progress". A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, showed that Iran had reduced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium gas and taken other action to comply with last year's interim agreement with world powers. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was due to address the Iranian people on television on Monday evening whilst US Secretary of State, John Kerry, was planning to speak to the press in Vienna before returning to the United States. One pessimistic senior Western diplomat spoke to Reuters under the condition of anonymity and said he did not think the talks were likely to move far in the next seven months. “It's been 10 years that proposals and ideas have been put forward,” he said. “There's nothing left. It's essentially a side issue now. The Iranians are not moving. It is a political choice. “I am sceptical that even if we did extend we will be able to reach a deal.” "You can't get a woman to work in every job that a man does, like they did in communist regimes in the past," he told the meeting of Turkey's Women and Democracy Association. "You can't put a pickaxe and a shovel in their hand and get them to work. That's not the way." He said women should be treated equally in the eyes of the law, but their different role in society had to be recognised. Erdogan's critics in mostly Muslim but constitutionally secular Turkey have regularly accused him of puritanical intrusiveness into private life, from his advice to women on the number of children they should have to his views on abortion.

A self-styled controversial Indian guru who many people believe can cure illnesses, was arrested after a week-long stand-off at his ashram in Haryana state. He has been remanded in custody until 28th November. Sant Rampal, a former engineer, is wanted in connection with a 2006 murder case in which a man died in a clash at his ashrams. He’s also wanted for contempt of court. His arrest follows a day of his supporters fighting a pitched battle with the police at his ashram. At least six people died during the stand-off, police said. The bodies of four women and a child were found at the site on Wednesday 19th November. A fifth woman, aged 20, died at a local hospital after leaving the ashram. The causes of their deaths are being investigated. Police say the bodies did not "bear any injuries". The 63-year-old guru, who is facing charges of waging war against the nation, told reporters on Thursday that he "regretted" the deaths, but denied police allegations that he had used his followers as human shields during clashes. "I did not use them (as shields). They were acting on their own," he said. The guru also denied all the

charges against him saying "I am innocent, all the charges against me are baseless". After being led out of his fortress-like complex in an ambulance late on Wednesday, the guru was taken for a medical examination. Before arresting Rampal, the police managed to evacuate more than 16,000 followers from the ashram and sent them home in buses and trains. Police accused his armed devotees of holding people hostage, and using women and children as human shields. More than 200 people were injured in the clashes - police fired tear gas and water cannon, and used bulldozers to try to break into the sprawling complex, while ashram members threw stones and other missiles and opened fire. At least 270 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and charged with rioting, illegal detention, attempt to murder and waging war against the state. The authorities ordered his arrest on contempt charges after he repeatedly failed to appear in court. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had set a final deadline for Rampal to appear in court on Monday in the contempt case. Rampal ignored the summons and his lawyers said he was too ill to make the 250km (155-mile) journey to the court in Chandigarh, which serves as the capital of both states. The judges criticised the government, saying they "lacked the will" to arrest the guru and said he must be in court by Friday.

Pakistani family sentenced to death after honour killing

Four members of the same family have been sentenced to death by a Pakistan Court last week after they brutally killed one of their pregnant relatives because she married the ‘wrong man’. 25-year-old Farzana Iqbal was bludgeoned to death in a busy public street in May earlier this year in an incident which briefly brought much needed attention to the nation’s epidemic of violence against women. Farzana’s father, brother, cousin

and another relative were all handed death sentences on Wednesday 19th November and ordered to pay a fine of $1,000. Another cousin was also fined the same amount but handed a 10 year term in prison. Due to a current suspension on executions in Pakistan, the death row sentence will effectively mean life behind bars until the moratorium is lifted yet defence lawyer, Mansoor Afridi, says all five relatives plan to appeal their sentencing.

Afridi added that he believed the verdict had only been given due to the wide coverage of the case making ‘a decision based on it sensationalism’. Women are murdered every day in Pakistan for perceived slights against conservative social traditions. The crime is so common it rarely rates more than a paragraph in newspapers. But Farzana's case attracted attention because it took place on a busy street outside the provincial High Court where she had gone to seek protection. Her family beat her to death with bricks while her husband, Muhammed Iqbal, begged nearby police for help. They did not intervene. In a somewhat bizarre twist, Iqbal has also admitted that he killed his previous wife so he could marry Farzana but escaped the death penalty because he was forgiven by the woman’s son – a current law in Pakistan says that if the next of kin does forgive the killer then murderers can escape without punishment. In 2013, 869 cases of so-called ‘honour killings’ were reported in the media, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The true figure is likely to be much higher since many cases go unreported.

Pain in 7-year-old girl’s mouth turns out to be caused by 202 teeth

Getting a tooth extracted is never a fun occasion, what with the massive needle, the dribbling and the general indignity of it all. And that’s just for one tooth. Now imagine if you had to have over 100 teeth pulled out. That’s what faced one little girl, who presented at the dentist with 202 teeth fighting for space in her mouth. The seven-year-old from New Dehli in India visited All India Institute of Medical Sciences where Dr Ajoy Roychoudhary, head of oral and maxillofacial surgery spoke about her situation: “It was shocking to see such complex situation in the minor’s mouth,” he said. “Normally we see a few

abnormal teeth-like structures in such patients; 202 of them inside the mouth of a seven-year-old is shocking. Our prime task was to get rid of it.” The girl was found to be suffering from compound odontoma – when a complex tumour forms of normal dental tissue that has grown in an irregular way. She had to endure two hours of surgery to remove all of the extra teeth. Dr Roychoudhary explained that the operation was very delicate as a jaw fracture would have led to permanent deformation. According to the girl’s family, she is recovering well and is able to chew again.

Die-hard fans of the famous (or should we say “infamous”) “Munna Bhai” can now look forward to seeing Bollywood’s realtime bad boy in a new film. Ironically, Sanjay Dutt who is currently serving a prison sentence in real life for firearms offences linked to 1993 Mumbai blasts, plays the role of a law enforcement officer in the forthcoming movie ‘Ungli’. The film faced some major hold-ups due to Sanjay Dutt’s prison release dates for shooting of the film and it had been doubted to ever reach completion. Supremo-director and producer Karan Johar and director Rensil D’Silva said that it was their work ethic and determination that kept the belief going that they would complete the project. Johar has given the edgy film a noir comic twist in a setting of a sprawling

metropolis, where corruption, intimidation and violence are a way of life. The film ‘Ungli’ perfectly captures the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and authority. It conveys, in an effective and humorous manner, a story of how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces whilst literally giving the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. The ensemble cast consists of Sanjay Dutt, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda and boasts a terrific supporting cast. Audiences can also look forward to the stunning Shraddha Kapoor as she makes a special appearance in an item number not to be missed.

Asian Express caught up with Sanjay Dutt: Q. You perform a lot of stunts and take part in numerous fight scenes during this film; did you find this physically challenging? A: It just so happens I am in the best shape of my life right now. I’ve lost a lot of weight and my fitness has got a lot better which meant I actually could enjoy all the stunts.

Q. Have you got any tips for keeping in such good shape?

A: Exercise! I know it sounds obvious but so many people talk about losing weight and gaining muscle but aren’t willing to put in the hard work to actually achieve it. Diet is also really important, much as you want but if you aren’t willing to chang you can exercise as e your diet then you won’t see a change.

Q. Did you enjoy having Rensil D’Silva as the director?

A: I think what makes Rensil such an amazing direct or is the fact he genuinely cares for his cast and really wants the best for them. It’s fairly unique to get someone like that, for me personally it means I have a deep respect for Rensil not only as a director, but as a friend .

Q. In this film, you play a hardline police officer called Inspector Kale, did you enjoy playing this role? A: I think Inspector Kale is simply misundersto enjoyed playing Kale, the stuns were all really funod (laughs). I really scenes with the cast was hysterical. It’s fun playin and doing the fight again, villains are so simple and you don’t haveg the villain now and to worry about the audience loving you. My character is able to get away I think that sort of character is always the most enjoy with anything and able to play.

Cassically trained British actress Fagun Thakrar has been in Hollywood promoting the historical drama that she stars in along with co-star Martin Sheen. 'Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain', has been inspired by the world’s worst real-life industrial disaster that resulted in more than 10,000 deaths in December 1984. Leicester-born Fagun moved to London where she studied Medicine at the University College London and also has a Masters in Acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. As part of her preparation for the character of “Rekha” in the film, Fagun began

researching and came across a sepia toned photo taken at the time of the disaster that showed a little girl comforting her toddler brother. The girl was looking straight at the camera, sitting next her dead parents. This picture, had a deep harrowing impact on Fagun, as she felt that little girl's eyes were watching and asking for her story to be told to the world. The British actress says as she continued to research the disaster in Bhopal, she discovered that the Union Carbide plant still stands, now abandoned, in the city where it caused so much destruction. Fagun says: “As I was recreating those end-of-life moments I realise how much those innocent people suffered that night while wandering blinded by the burning sensation of the

poisonous gas. “This disaster hit the poorest and weakest of society disproportionately hard. Those running away from the plant on foot ended up taking even more of the gas into their lungs from the exertion. Children were particularly susceptible due to their height.” Fagun’s character, "Rekha" carries the emotional weight of the loss of her husband who is the first one to be killed in an industrial accident in the Carbide plant a few months prior to the big disaster. Director Rensil D’Silva gives Asian Express an insight into the film Q. How would you describe ‘Ungli’?

A: It is a story about friendship and is a very character-driven film. It’s about what happens when a gang of friends decide to take justice into their own hands. The film itself has a lot of really humorous moments, which adds to the already good storyline.

Ungli last year, I wouldn’t have gotten these songs. Music is becoming extremely crucial for the success of a film and I think the album is fantastic.

Q. How did you deal with Sanjay Dutt’s legal issues during the filming of ‘Ungli’?

A: I changed the venue of the shoot from Byculla to Carter Road. Q. How did you cope with the delays? The media was chasing him everywhere; they had positioned A: The delays frustrated the hell themselves outside his apartment out of me. I think the worst thing complex. at all. Whether I would reshoot or not would have been Karan’s [Johar] decision because it involves lots of money. However, if I had to reshoot, I would go to Anil Kapoor, with whom I have worked with on ‘24’ and would have told him to please do the film as it is safe to say, I was in deep trouble.

Q. What was it like filming with Sanjay Dutt when he knew he was facing incarceration?

A: The mood was very sober on the sets when Sanjay was around. The last scene he filmed was a very dramatic scene, at the end of it he got very emotional. We hugged him but Sanjay didn’t say anything. He went aside to do a brief photo-shoot and then didn’t return, he just drove off. Imagine what he must have undergone that day! I was asking so much from a man who was going through hell.

A: I didn’t have any back up plan

A: It is Dharma’s first film with Emraan and has a very different plot to the kind of subjects we have explored in the past. Rensil D’Silva has put his heart and soul into this one. The film follows a group of friends who have had enough of the corruption that faces them every day and decide to take it upon themselves to change things.

A: It was really stressful at the time, both Rensil and I both felt under huge amounts of pressure and neither of us knew exactly what was going to happen. When something like that happens during filming it can often be the end of the film. We still had a number of scenes to shoot and without Sanjay it just wasn’t possible. Fortunately

Q. Why did you decide to include Shraddha Kapoor in this film?

Q. How did you feel when you found out you would have to delay the film?

we were able to complete the film and I think that the delay has actually helped the film overall, I am really happy with how Ungli has turned out. A: I have been a big fan of Shradda’s work for a while now and thought she would be perfect for the song. I know she hasn’t really done anything like this before so I thought I would offer it to her. When I spoke to her she was really excited about the opportunity and was excited to do something new! It worked out really well

in the end, Shraddha and Emraan worked perfectly together!

Q. How was it working with your mother to produce this film?

A: We have worked together on a number of films now and I have always enjoyed working with her. I have heard stories of people hating working with their family but I personally find it really easy. We have a great working relationship and we both know what we like and dislike. She is fantastic at what she does and given the opportunity to work with her on this film was great.

This configuration on different levels, and the alternation between 2D and 3D lighting functions lets the observer experience the tail lights in an entirely new dynamic way. Beneath the bumper, there is a diffuser made of black anodised aluminium; like the front blade, it extends over the full width of the car as a separate, significantly recessed element. The diffuser integrates two trapezoid-shaped inlets which visually coordinate with the embossed tail lights and house the exhaust system tailpipes.

Luxurious and innovative

The spacious interior of the Audi prologue is like a luxurious lounge. It is based on Gran Turismo design, and it enables both very focused driving and relaxed touring. The interface visually adapts to the specific driving style. The interior marks the beginning of a new design era at Audi, in which the architecture merges with the operating concept to form one unit. The surfaces for displays and controls are innovatively integrated into the instrument panel and console of the centre tunnel, and the infotainment system brings driver and passenger into dialog with one another. When entering the vehicle, the four-seat coupe receives its passengers with polite hospitality. The “butler” – an innovative intelligent software program – identifies them based on their smartphones and adjusts the seats

and climate control system according to their preferences. The system also makes recommendations for music and route planning that are oriented towards the owner’s preferences. The Easy Slot system, an advanced development of the Audi phone box, is located under lids in the centre console. A special mechanism networks the smartphones of passengers to the vehicle infotainment system and charges them.

Generous open interior space

Tautly stretched lines and lean geometric forms give the interior a light and clear ambience. The instrument panel has a light and elegant appearance with its strictly horizontal layout that is not interrupted anywhere, and it emphasises the generous interior width. It lowers itself towards the interior on two levels. The upper level is positioned, like a roof, above the Audi virtual cockpit future – an advanced development of the Audi virtual cockpit – and above the line of air vents. It is part of the wraparound – a large arc that encircles the driver and front passenger. A second wrap-around joins the front and rear sections of the interior and is already quite visible from the exterior. The centre console with its pass-through also appears to hover, as do the front seats, whose rails are mounted on the tunnel and side sills. The head restraints of the two rear bucket seats are lowered when not in use; they automatically extend when a passenger enters the rear seating area with the electric easy entry function. When the sound system is activated, a new type of sound spoiler extends from the rear shelf; it optimally produces a premium sound in the car that is typical of Audi.

The technology of the Audi prologue is as sophisticated as its interior is emotion-evoking. The 4.0 TFSI, which is installed in the engine compartment like a technical masterpiece, produces 605 PS and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque; in overboost mode, which the driver can call up for around 15 seconds, a boosted torque of 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) is available. The sonorous biturbo V8 accelerates the two-door coupe, which has an unladen weight of 1,980 kilograms (4365.2 lb) from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. The show car is capable of returning to 32.8mpg combined, which equates to CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre. One contributor to this high efficiency is a new 48-volt subsystem of the vehicle electrical system – this is a technology that will soon be introduced to production cars at Audi. The 48-volt system is supplied by a powerful belt starter generator, which turns the powertrain into a mild hybrid and has an energy recovery output of up to 12 kW during braking. An eight-speed tiptronic directs engine power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which works closely with torque vectoring.

New five-link wheel suspensions

In the chassis, the adaptive air suspension sport – an air suspension with controlled damping – offers a large adjustment range between smooth rolling and very tight handling; it also varies the show car’s ground clearance over several levels. The front and rear suspensions are engineered as lightweight fivelink designs. The large carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs decelerate the show car powerfully. On the 20-inch front brakes, they are gripped by sixpiston fixed calipers. A technology highlight of the Audi prologue is its dynamic all-wheel steering – it boosts driving dynamics and ride comfort by an intelligent combination of dynamic and allwheel steering. Bacca Boys are Penalty Kings FINAL: Old Bacca Boys 0-0 Tetley’s Tino (OBB win 12-11 on pens) It was a final where both keepers took centre stage initially before a huge penalty shootout, with 24 efforts on goal, took place resulting in Old Bacca Boys lifting this season’s SLUK Cup. With both teams having scraped their semi-finals earlier in the night, many may have expected a slow-paced encounter yet this certainly was not the case. A man-of-the-match performance from OBB keeper, Gulfraz Satti, saw him come close to breaking the deadlock on a number of occasions, with his first powerful effort smartly saved by Ziyad Hussain. At the other end of the pitch, Tino’s Shazad Hussain was trying his best to turn the screw in front of goal and came close with a deflected effort that trickled just wide of the post. This was quickly followed up by Hasan Abrar who fired narrowly over from a trademark corner kick. The game definitely had the feel of a local derby, with tackles flying in, but it was OBB who looked more threatening early on, with Satti again coming close, only

The game began to stretch as both sides were struggling to keep in their second game of the night, with Tino’s Hasan Noshi and Abrar presented with great chances but failing to convert. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Gulfraz Satti’s man-of-the-match performance in the final was enough for him to be named as this season’s Player of the Tournament. A dedicated performance throughout the semi-final and final saw him lead by example on the way to OBB clinching the SLUK Cup.

Yet that did nothing to deter their confidence as an amazing 24 penalties were seen before a victor was finally crowned as OBB walked away with this year’s trophy. Penalties were needed to separate Old Bacca Boys and Samba FC last week as a closely-fought contest was eventually won by the prior, following a stalemate in normal time. Samba FC, having conceded 32 goals in their 12 league games, may have been the underdogs against at kick off yet there was nothing to separate the sides in the early stages. In front of an expectant crowd, an even game was played out in the early exchanges with OBB’s Nikash Yousef coming closest to opening the scoring on two occasions with two deflected strikes. A rare solid defensive performance from their opponents saw OBB start to get frustrated and the side were looking susceptible on the counter-attack. Shazad and Jhoyed Ali both came close with efforts, one just edging past the post and the other, despite being seetly struck, landing right in the arms of OBB’s keeper. Much like the Hyde Park game, played prior to this semi-final, it seemed the game was destined to end in a goalless draw until a moment of madness moments before the final whistle. A routine corner kick for OBB didn’t seem to pose any danger until one of the Samba defenders were penalised for entering the ‘D area’ and due to the rules of Soccer League six-a-side, a penalty was awarded. With the final in touching distance, up stepped Sultan Khan, yet to the shock of an ever-growing crowd, Samba shot stopper, Wasim Akram, pulled off a fine save to all but take the game onto penalties. Goalless in normal time, Samba just lacked the clinical edge in the resulting shootout as OBB went on to steal a 2-1 win and advance into the cup final. MOTM: OBB’s Nikash Yousef was a rock in the heart of the defence and was unfortunate not to find his name on the scoresheet with two close efforts.

Hyde Park may have been coming into this cup week as the favourites to lift the trophy yet a disciplined performance from one of league’s top defences saw a vintage cup upset on the cards in the semi-final. Tetley’s Tino may be 11 points off the table toppers in the SLUK table yet the form book was thrown out of the window on Tuesday at the underdogs pulled off a 1-0 victory. Abdul Wahab making his debut for Tino having previously played for the league leaders, netted the winner midway through the second half. The two sides were evenly matched throughout yet the better chances fell to Tino early on, with Hasan Abrar coming agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the early stages producing a brilliant save from Nazeem Hussain. Minutes later, from a corner, Abrar once again found himself in a glorious position and should have scored but blazed his effort just over the bar. Hyde Park were dominating possession yet were struggling to breakdown a side who have only conceded five league goals this season in their 12 games. Backing up that resolute defence was a dangerous looking counter attack and when Abrar once again broke through, following good play from Shazad Hussain, he looked destined to score yet Hyde Park shot-stopper had other ideas, pulling off a fine save. The league’s high-flyers did improve in the second half with an early effort from Kadeem Walker narrowly missing the inside of the post and deflecting into the side netting. As it looked like penalties may be needed to decide the contest, Wahab picked up the ball from a kick-in, turned his man, and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Hyde Park did turn on the offensive as time was running out yet like many sides this season, they failed to find a way through the impenetrable defence, and were subsequently out of the cup. With the success of the Indian Super League gripping football fans around the world, the sport has never been so popular in the country of some 1.6billion residents. And now, with the ISL in full-flow, one of England’s Premier League clubs is leading a ground-breaking initiative to search for the Next Indian Star. Promising young footballers from the South Asian country are being offered the opportunity to compete for the chance to train at the Crystal Palace Academy. A delegation from the team, led by club ambassador Mark Bright, will be at Barclays Premier League Live, the Premier League’s international fan park, in Mumbai next month. The weekend of events

between 13th and 14th December will showcase the world’s most-watched teams, with the London-based Eagles teaming up with Mumbai City FC and Star Sports to stage a trial on Thursday 11th December for the best 16-19 year-olds in the region. Following this, the 12 most promising youngsters will be invited to show their skills at the weekend event in front of thousands of spectators. The winner of the ‘Play for Palace’ competition will come to London to train with the club’s hottest young prospects, in an academy which has produced stars such as Victor Moses, Wilfred Zaha and Nathaniel Clyne in the past. Mark Bright, who scored more than 100 goals during his Palace career explained further about the project. “This will be the chance of a lifetime,” he said. “The winner of the competition will get a fantastic experience playing at the Academy and then go back to India to become an ambassador for Palace. “This is a unique initiative. Everyone has a favourite local team and favourite overseas team – we want football fans in India to follow us. “We know cricket is the number one sport in India, but

Cricket world mourns death of batsman The tragic death of Australian cricketer, Phillip Hughes, earlier this week has resulted in calls from many in the cricketing community for a review into the safety aspect of the game. Hughes was hit on the back of his head whilst batting in a domestic match on Tuesday with the force of the blow piercing his vertebral artery and causing blood to gush into his brain. He sadly died in hospital just two days later at the age of 25. Former England opener, Geoffrey Boycott OBE, has said there is a false sense of safety now in the sport when batsmen feel their protective gear is enough to protect them from fast-paced balls. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said: “Most of my career I batted on uncovered pitches without a helmet. “This taught me how important it was to have a good technique against fast bowling. “You required judgement of what to leave, when to duck and when to play the ball.” Adding: “Helmets have unfortunately taken away a lot of that fear and have given every batsman a false sense of security. “Even tail-enders come in and bat like millionaires, flailing away and having a go at short balls with poor technique and lack

of footwork. “Helmets have made batsmen feel safe in the belief that they cannot be hurt and made batsmen more carefree and careless.” Former International Cricket Council chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, is just one major stakeholder who has called on the game's administrators to work on upgrading safety standards “This is very, very sad,” he said speaking to Reuters. “These injuries are part of cricket but precautions should be taken so that such incidents do not happen. “I hope this never happens again on the cricket field. “After the Nari Contractor incident a number of years have passed. But if we are still struggling with the quality of protective gear, that's a very sad thing on the part of the administrators.” Contractor was a former captain of the Indian national side who was also struck on the skull whilst batting in a practice match, ending his international career. After being taken to hospital, he was unconscious for days before a miraculous recovery resulted in Contractor surviving the ordeal after several operations and blood transfusions.

Currently studying at Kirklees College in Dewbsury, Hussain balances his sporting career with his student life, as he completes a Level 2 BTEC in Business and IT. The former Batley Business and Enterprise College student currently trains with the Batley central Amateur Boxing Club and spars regularly with British champion, Gary Sykes. Naming Amir Khan as his idol, Hussain hopes to repeat the Bolton star’s performance at his own Olympic Games yet says he still understands the importance of having a good education behind him. “I train for my boxing twice a day, six times a week,” he said. “It’s hard to fit in my studying around it but everyone at college is very supportive and gives me extra help if I need a day off or if I’m struggling with deadlines. “I want to box professionally and

go to the Olympics but I also want to go to university so ultimately I can start my own business one day. I think it’s important to have something else to do alongside my sporting career.” He added: “I decided to do business and IT because I am good at it, but also because it will give me a lot of options. There are lots of things I could go on to do once I get my qualifications.” Having already won several titles as a youngster, and having competed in the Youth ABA National Championships, GB Boxing Championships and European Junior Championships, Hussain believes he is ready for a shot at the Gold in less than two years time.
