PM recognises Yorkshire’s ‘substantial’ contribution to economic growth

Prime Minister David Cameron paid a visit to a local West Yorkshire Academy earlier this week as he recognised the county’s growing manufacturing contribution. Speaking at the Halifax Skills Centre’s Construction Academy, on Thursday 10th October, the Prime Minister was full of praise for Yorkshire and spoke of how the region’s economy plays a crucial role for the nation. Statistically, the county has the second highest manufacturing contribution to regional Gross Value Added (GVA), making up 15 per cent of Yorkshire and Humber’s total GVA. When asked about the importance of linking the North with the South via the proposed HS2 link, Mr Cameron stressed that it is vital that major cities,

across the whole country, ‘not just the south’, have the most efficient transport links. Speaking to the Asian Express, he said: “I think it is absolutely vital. I want to see an economic recovery and economic growth right across the country, north and south. The great thing about HS2 is that it links together eight of the ten biggest cities in Britain. “We have to build new railway lines because our current ones are running out of capacity so the only choice is do we opt for the traditional line or do we build a high speed one so I think it is only right to build the high speed line. “Obviously there are some people that are disappointed that HS2 doesn’t serve their particular town or city but the point to them which I would make is HS2 will free up a lot of capacity on existing lines so there will be more opportunity to run more services. “If we don’t make these sort of investments we will find that we will run out of that capacity.”

As the sun shone down on Leeds last weekend, runners and walkers, young and old, embarked on Roundhay Park to take part in the first ever Give a Gift 5K challenge. Organised by Leeds-based Hamara Centre, the event was a huge success, raising more than £5,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, and Martin House Children’s Hospice. A fantastic turnout resulted in over 200 fundraisers turning up on the day to complete the five-kilometre challenge around the famous park. Competitive runners, fitness fans, joggers, walkers, children and even the disabled all turned up on the day, helping to raise vital funds for the two local causes. Habib Khan, Business Development Manager at the Hamara Centre, helped organise the whole day and was delighted with the turnout. “Our target was to raise a thousand pound for every kilometer so ‘5k for 5k’,” he explained. “The fact we were able to do this and even beat the target is brilliant, we were all overwhelmed by the response from the public. “It was a brilliant day and was more successful than we could have ever predicted. “Initial projections had suggested that around 100 people may turn up, yet the figure was much higher than that on the day with around 250 runners and walkers. “To say the whole event was only thought of six weeks ago, and the fact we had never done anything like this before, the support we received from the local community was exceptional.” One participant who enjoyed the day thoroughly was Naseem Akhtar. Ms Akhtar is the mother of former Bradford University student, Adel Hussain, who was tragically killed in a car accident earlier this year. Speaking on her behalf, her son, Sakib, spoke of how impressed the family were with the whole initiative. He said: “The money was being raised was for two very good causes. It was definitely

The most recent statistics show that in the first few months of new fortnightly bin collections being introduced, the first residents to receive the new service recycled 42 per cent more waste. The new bin service was introduced to 56,000 homes on the 29th April 2013. An additional 561 tonnes of waste has been recycled in the first twelve weeks of the more frequent green bin collections – significantly more than the weight of a full jumbo jet. Over the same period, 23 per cent less waste was sent to landfill. Councillors will hear that if the remainder of the bin rollout is as successful as the first phase, the council will be on track to save £2.5 million a year; money that can be spent on providing other vital council services. It also means that ambitious recycling targets will be met, making Leeds cleaner and greener.

Open for business

A hugely-anticipated new £28m wellbeing centre for Leeds will open its doors to the public this weekend. Holt Park Active will open to residents on Saturday 12th October and will be the first centre of its kind in the city. The fantastic new wellbeing centre, based on Holtdale Approach, offers a range of flexible spaces for activities and support services that will suit people of all ages. It features a 70-station Bodyline gym, 25-metre pool, hydrotherapy and learning pools, dance studio, café, garden, sports hall, multi-activity rooms, Changing Places facility and meeting / training areas. Aiming to encourage residents of all ages to lead an active lifestyle, the centre will also host a range of activities for older people and those with physical or learning disabilities. The centre will open at 9am with the first 100 customers through the doors being entered into a draw to win a £50 hamper.

Road Safety

Pedestrian safety is to be improved at the junction of Hamme Strasse and Valley Road in Bradford. Work is due to start on 14th October to replace the signal equipment, which is worn out, and to introduce more button controls at the pedestrian crossings. The work is expected to take around five weeks and may lead to some minor traffic disruption during off-peak periods only. Coun Val Slater, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Planning, Transportation and Highways, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any delays to traffic but I am sure these will be a very small price to pay for a major improvement in road safety at the junction.”

How can a mother, who knows her child’s body is dead in her house, just continue living life as normal?”

The shocking story of a Bradford mother, jailed for 15 years last week on charges of manslaughter by gross negligence, has sparked a huge debate across all sectors of society. 43-year-old Amanda Hutton was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court after the body of her youngest four-yearold child was found ‘mummified’ in her home, two years after the infant had died. Hamzah Khan’s corpse was found in a cot in Hutton's Bradford bedroom in September 2011, and showed signs of being severely malnourished when he died. Judge Roger Thomas QC told the alcoholic mother of eight that the disregard she had shown towards her children was ‘breathtakingly awful’

Nadeem Malik:

He said: “The details of your wicked conduct have been displayed in such awful detail over the past three weeks in the trial. “[These offences] demonstrate a most fundamental and serious breach of any duty that an individual in decent society can owe to others - namely the duty that a parent owes to her or his young children to take proper care of them". Hutton was sentenced on the 4th October, guilty of manslaughter, child neglect to five other children, and preventing the burial of Hamzah’s body.

“15 years is nowhere near enough for the crime she has committed. She’s not only taken a life but also kept it a secret for almost two years. It is wrong in every sense. How she could hide it away, I do not know. She should have got a life sentence. “She has no right to do what she did; it is absolutely appalling and disgusting. I feel sorry for all her children who have been abused by her in the past but hopefully they’ll see the end of it now.”

Adil Hussain:

“It’s absolutely disgusting that a human being can do something like that. Why do people have children if they are not then going to look after them? I believe every child is a blessing from God and has to be loved and cared for. “To give the woman just 15 years is not enough. She has taken the life away from her child and it is not like she didn’t have ways to get help. This country provides child benefits to ensure every infant is catered for, yet she just ignored it so I would like to see her spend the rest of her life behind bars.”

A team of seven students at a local secondary school are paving the way for a new style of teaching, and results already show the programme is working. Belle Vue Boys’ school, on Thorn Lane, launched the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) three years ago and with the school continuing to show improvement year on year, it seems the future is bright for the Bradford establishment. The JLT was set up to give the student body a voice and are a mirror image of the senior leadership team. They discuss the same issues as their seniors and have regular meetings with the head of each subject to discuss different ways lessons can be improved to benefit the pupils. More than 550 young people attend the school and sixth form, yet it is a team of just seven, made up from pupils in Years 8 to 11, which make up the JLT. Covering subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Music and P.E, plus many more, the team are a self-titled ‘strategic organisation’ whose aim is to, as their slogan says, ‘Expand Excellence’. Chairman and Year 10 pupil, Hamidur Rahman Chowdhury, explained how he became head of the student body and changes which have already been made under the current team’s tenure. He said: “It was Mr Wrightson (assistant head teacher) who actually approached all of us to join the JLT and we all jumped at the opportunity. “Our slogan basically sums up what we are trying to achieve, in that we are expanding excellence from one subject or department to another one. We take good

things which may be happening in English and do it in other lessons so we explode all these positives things across the school. “Each student has been assigned a role for a department, whereby we have a meeting with that subjects head and discuss we can take Hamidur, who is also Subject leader for English, added: “So far we’ve changed our uniforms; they’re completely different from normal ones, as we are the student voice and we feel we need to stand out. “All the feedback has been really good and there is a positive buzz going around the school because of people wanting to join the JLT. “We are currently working on a teaching and learning prospectus – a booklet to show other schools what the JLT is and what the good things about this school are.” The team may only make up a small percentage of the school’s population yet there are now plans to hopefully expand the project to involve almost 50 students. A wider committee could be setup to allow more pupils to get involved with how the school is run and according to head teacher, Mr Colin Willsher, this is something which would only

enhance the current programme. He said: “I have been really impressed with the team and their commitment to it all. How serious they take it is fantastic but most of all there clear sense of what they want to be done differently in the school is very reassuring. “Gone are the days when this school was run by adults for adults. I think this is now a school which is increasingly not only run for young people but also by them as well with them having their decisive say in the way things are run here.” Assistant head teacher, Mr Graeme Wrightson, has been at the school for five years and commutes every day from York. He has played an important part in running the JLT for the past three years and spoke of how the group’s progress is reflective of that of the school’s. “Belle Vue has been progressing every year that I have been here,” he explains. “Validated data from three year average, show that we have gone from 29 per cent attaining A*-C grades in GCSE to 44 per cent. “Having the student voice is absolutely paramount for us. If we put the students at the heart of everything we do we look at the school from their eyes and see what they experience meaning we can then look to progress in the areas which require improvement. “Their work is absolutely crucial in the future success for this school.” He added: “We’ve had other head teachers from other schools visit as part of the Bradford Partnership Review, which is an authority inspection framework. Everyone who has come in contact with our JLT have said they would like to do some work with them as well so I do see it even catching on in other schools.” Current members of the JLT are: Chairman, Hamidur Rahman Chowdhury; Vice-Chairman, Ayaaz Ashraf; Adam Hussain; Hannan Shafique; Uzair Patel; Milan Demetar and Wajahat Ali.

Horbury Library will reopen after its comprehensive refurbishment on Monday 14th October, at 10am. The library has been redecorated, with new carpets and flooring, improved lighting, new shelving, new furniture, and the addition of a self service option, Wi-Fi and new upgraded computers. With these improvements now complete it is expected that users will enjoy their experience at the library even more. Free parking

Motorists in Calderdale will not have to pay to park in several of the borough’s remaining free car parks until after Christmas and New Year. Calderdale Council has delayed implementing charges in the 10 car parks: Brig Royd at West Vale; Royd Lane in Ripponden; Church Lane, Mill Lane and Bank Street in Brighouse; Oxford Street, Dale Street and Dalton Street in Todmorden; and Haugh Shaw Road and Queens Road at King Cross. The Council recently announced that work was starting on putting charges into place in these car parks by mid-November, yet plans have now been delayed until 2014.

With the English Defence League set to march through the city of Bradford this weekend, there are calls from a wide demographic to have the city protests banned. Current law states that you cannot ban a public assembly, or take away a group’s right to freedom of speech. However, after incidents of violence in past demonstrations in Bradford (three years ago), and more recently Hull, leading local figures have voiced their concerns about the threat of repeat actions. Bradford West MP, George Galloway and Bradford East MP, Gerry Sutcliffe, have both stated their disapproval of the far-right group, with the prior releasing a damning statement in regard to the EDL. Mr Galloway said: “The EDL are a scourge who seek to sow division and hatred wherever they go. Time and again, people from ethnic minorities, their places of worship, passersby and even the police have been subject to terrible abuse and even violence from the thugs who come on all their events. “Gerry Sutcliffe and I called on the Police Commissioner and the Chief Constable to ban them from Bradford when they announced they intended to come here. I am very disappointed this is not going to happen and instead the police are allowing them to gather behind City Hall. “The last thing Bradford city centre needs is these people coming from outside Bradford to try and intimidate and abuse

shoppers on a busy Saturday afternoon.” Coun David Green, leader of Bradford Council, also spoke of his disappointment of the groups planned march. He issued the following strongly worded comment: “The EDL’s agenda is abhorrent to the overwhelming majority of Bradfordians and we do not want them in our city or district. “Such protests also cost taxpayers and city centre retailers many hundreds of thousands of pounds, through the public resources needed to manage them and lost business, but we don’t have any legal powers to ban them.

“The EDL’s agenda is abhorrent to the overwhelming majority of Bradfordians and we do not want them in our city.” “We are therefore currently working with the Police, local organisations and businesses to minimise disruption in the city centre and ensure public safety.” Former Leader of the EDL, Tommy Robinson, will not be in attendance on Saturday 12th October after stepping down from the party earlier this week. Mr Robinson, and co-leader, Kevin Carroll, opted to leave the group after they suggested the

party had become too radicalised with Mr Robinson saying he still wants to counter Islamist ideology just ‘not with violence but with better, democratic ideas’. However, despite the exclusion of the former leader, hundreds are still expected to turn up to the demonstration this weekend whilst ant-fascist groups are likely to organise counterdemonstrations. The Bradford Anti-Fascist Group was only set up two weeks ago and already has more than 130 followers on Twitter. A spokesperson for the group told the Asian Express that he hoped Bradfordians would unite against the EDL during Saturday’s demonstrations and stage their own peaceful protest to show that ‘the far right group is only a minority’. A spokesperson for the Bradford Anti-Fascist group said: “We don’t have any leaders and we’re not politically governed. We are just a group of local Bradfordians who have come together to basically show our disapproval of the EDL’s views and their upcoming visit to Bradford. “We’ve been out in Bradford distributing more than 1,500 leaflets whilst dozens and dozens of people were speaking to us about their support of our message. “We are not saying that the event should be banned but rather ‘contained’. If the antifascist groups outnumber the EDL representatives then we hope there will not be any breakaways and therefore no violence in the city. They can do their peaceful march then get on the bus and go back home.”

A group of 22 avid fundraisers completed a hilly test like no other last month as they rambled across the Three Peaks challenge. Organised by Leeds-based businessman, Tariq Qadeer, the 25 mile Yorkshire Dales trek was tackled as an attempt to raise funds for local causes, including childhood cancer charity, Candlelighters. With the task of scaling the three mammoth hills in less than 24 hours, the group did exceptionally well to finish in half their

allocated time. In preparation of the day, Mr Qadeer had arranged a number of ‘training walks’ yet nothing could quite prepare the ramblers for what they were about to tackle. No representatives on the day had done such a strenuous walk before and despite a lot of aching muscles, every person completed it and helped raise thousands of pounds for the charities. Mr Qadeer is an avid fundraiser, most recently completing the Leeds half marathon in May this year, yet he explained how this latest challenge was a completely new venture for all involved. He said: “We set off walking at 8am in the village of Horton in Ribblesdale and the first peak

we did was Pen-y-Ghent. “All the three peaks are nearly 2400 feet high but the climb basically starts as soon as you come out of the car park and cross the road. “It looked beautiful but it wasn't that easy and we soon started to realise that walking the five-to-six miles to Otley and back wasn't enough preparation for this challenge. “But as a team we all kept each other’s spirits high, supporting each other and working as a group, and eventually we all, as a team, managed to finish the walk in less than 12 hours. “We all completed the challenge without any major injuries or blisters, just stiffness, tiredness, and aches and pains on muscles we didn't even know existed. “It was an amazing feeling, a great sense of achievement that we put ourselves through for so much hardship for two very good causes and now we have done it.” The fundraising group, Team Bramhope, smashed their target of £1,500 and have so far raised more than £2,700, with donations continuing to pour in. As the sun returned to Bradford for perhaps the last full weekend this year, thousands of sun dwellers embarked on City Park to partake in the third annual Positive Bradford event. Set up in 2011 to celebrate everything good about the city, the day played host to tens of acts from Punjabi dancers to opera singers, jiu-jitsu performers to cheerleaders. Local businesses also had stalls spread across the Park, including the likes of the National Media Museum and a number of local charities. Jane Vincent, co founder and director of Positive Bradford, was thrilled to see the event draw in such a large crowd and explained how the whole initiative came about. “Today has just been absolutely fantastic,” she said. “We actually came up with the idea about two years ago. Saleem [Kader] and I both

have business in Bradford and we heard on the television and the radio that Bradford was the least safe city in the country to visit and we just couldn’t believe it. “We both said look, we need to start doing something. Instead of just taking it, we need to stand up for ourselves. “What we have done is bring communities, together education, businesses, PR, marketing and the arts, to do a showcase of all the great things that are going on in the city and say ‘look everybody, we might not be perfect, no city is, but look at the great things we have got’. “This is the third time we’ve done it and we are absolutely packed, we had a waiting list of people, a multi-cultural stage full of events, it’s great.” Fellow co-founder and director, Saleem Kader, added: “This is Bradford based businesses and individuals telling people what is great about the city. “It is amazing, look at the day today. A new cycle plan for Wakefield is to be considered by senior Councillors at a meeting of Wakefield Council’s Cabinet. The Wakefield Cycle Strategy will inform how all highway, maintenance, new developments and cycling infrastructure schemes are developed for the benefit of cyclists in the district. This strategy ties in with the cycling legacy and is also designed to complement the West Yorkshire Cycling Strategy. A revealing new book is set to challenge commonly held external perceptions of the much-maligned city of Bradford. ‘Changing Bradford: Exploring South Asian Heritage in Bradford’ presents a fresh perspective on the impact made by South Asian people on a city which has become known for racial tension and economic blight. on intergenBased erational interviews, including that of Asian Express Co-Founder and Managing Editor Andleeb Hanif, the publication showcases a broad range of people of South Asian heritage. It features housewives, factory workers, leading entrepreneurs and celebrities from the city and sheds light on the major contribution made to Bradford’s cultural, social and economic vitality since the

1950s. Material for ‘Changing Bradford’ was gathered by young people from Manningham Youth Project and Impressions Gallery’s New Focus group through a series of oral history interviews. The project was led by the Consortia of Ethnic Minority Organisations (COEMO) in partnership with Impressions Gallery, Manningham Youth Project, and West Yorkshire Archive Service (Bradford) and has been supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Dr Mohammed Salam, Chief Executive COEMO commented: “Bradford is a place that stirs the emotions. “For those of us who live and work in Bradford, a different place emerges when we talk about the city; a place which is far from the media stereotype, and which reflects the creative passions, community spirit, business acumen and family values of its multicultural population. “We hope that, in a modest way, the publication of ‘Changing

YouTube’s celebrity brothers With more than two million YouTube views and 15,000 subscribers, brothers Ali and Shaheen Shahalom truly are internet stars. The cheeky chappies from London host their own channel on the video sharing website and have

attracted visitors from all around the world as they act out their comical sketches. The pair often relate back to their Bengali heritage and have subsequently attracted a large SouthAsian following, yet the

humour in every sketch can tickle anyone, regardless of background. Catching up with the Asian Express, Ali spoke about the brothers rise to fame and how lucky he is to have a sibling like Shaheen.

All these things gave us unique selling points, creating a positive and popular response. Q. What do you enjoy most about making your videos? A. For me, making someone laugh or smile brings me so much happiness. To be able to do that to someone through our YouTube videos is such a wonderful feeling. We've also been fortunate enough to support various campaigns and charities through the work we do. To be able to help others in need, through something you love doing is also such a rewarding feeling. Q. What’s it like working with your brother? Sibling rivalry? A. Working with my little brother feels so normal. How we are on-camera is exactly how we are off-camera, which makes filming very comfortable for both of us. I'm fully aware that a lot of siblings

don't get along or have indifferences. However, my little brother and I seem to defy that notion. I'm not quite sure why were so close, but we get along so well and have so much love for each other. There isn't really any rivalry, but there's plenty of teasing and messing around. Q. Finally…What are some of the best comments you have ever received? A. To me every comment or tweet or email means something different. The fact that people think we're even worthy to be watched is a crazy feeling, especially when those figures have now surpassed into the millions. If I had to choose though, I think it's the emotional-driven ones that really strike a chord with me. Every now and then, I’ll receive a message expressing how someone has been through some sort of stress or trauma, but our videos have helped them through it. Just being able to brighten someone's day up for a split moment, is such a euphoric feeling. I'm incredibly grateful for all the nice comments and all the support and I hope people can continue to offer their love and respect.

Q. Why did you decide to make these videos? A. I've always been a creative person. Doing Drama & Theater at GCSE and Alevel gave birth to this passion of playing around with different characters and improvisational acting. Additionally, I used to love making random videos on my phone or my laptop of me and my friends just messing around. When I first discovered YouTube, it seemed like the perfect platform to combine these two interests. Eventually, that's exactly what happened. My little brother and I have always been close, so he naturally became my comedy partner. Q. What was the initial response? A. I think people genuinely liked the idea of two brothers bonding so well and there aren't many sibling partners on YouTube. Furthermore, having a BritishBangladeshi ethnicity, I noticed there wasn't really much content on YouTube

Eid ul Adha Recipes Mutton Nihari

Nihari is a traditional dish from Pakistan and served with Naan bread and is essentially a juicy stew consisting of slowly cooked shank of lamb or beef. Ingredients Mutton – 1 kg Plain white flour– 2 tablespoons dissolved in 1/4 cup of water Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon stick – 1 Bay leaves – 2 Cardamom – 2 Cloves – 8 Garam masala – 2 tablespoons Ginger garlic paste – 2 tablespoons Chilli powder - 1 tsp Coriander powder – 1 tsp Yogurt – 3 tablespoons Ghee or cooking oil – 1/2 cup Nutmeg – few pinches Fennel seeds (saunf) – 2 tablespoons ground Whole black peppercorn - 1/2 teaspoon ground Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon ground Garnishing 1 Onion fried to brown 2 Green chillies chopped 2 Ginger strips sliced 3 tablespoons coriander leaves chopped

Cooking instructions Clean the mutton/beef shank. Heat oil in a pan and add bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon stick and ginger garlic paste. Add the mutton and fry for 2 to 3 minutes. Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, yogurt, garam masala and fry until the oil separates. Add the nutmeg, cardamom, fennel, peppercorn, cumin and 3 cups of water and cook on very low heat for 3 to 4 hours. Finally, add the flour and cook for about 15 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves, ginger, onions and green chillies. Serve mutton nihari with chappati, naan or rice.

Orange Scented Gulab Jamun Serves makes 20-30 Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time 10-15 minutes

Ingredients For the sugar syrup 365g sugar 250ml water 1tsp orange essence 310g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch ground nutmeg 397g can Carnation condensed milk ghee or ground nut oil to fry

Ginger Ladoo Makes 20 Prep time: 15 minutes This recipe is also delicious using dried chopped apricots; substitute the ginger for the apricot. Ingredients 1tbsp butter or ghee 150g fine semolina 50g ground almonds 1 tsp ground nutmeg 25g crystallized stem ginger, finely chopped Half a 397g can Carnation condensed milk To finish, strands of saffron

Method Heat the butter or ghee in a pan and gently toast the semolina for a few minutes, take off the heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Roll the mixture into 20 small balls and finish with strands of saffron.

To finish, a sprinkling of toasted desiccated coconut

Method Make a thin syrup, by boiling the sugar and water together for a few minutes, allow to cool then stir in the orange essence. Sift together the dry ingredients into a bowl and stir in enough condensed milk to form a soft dough (approximately half the can). Shape the dough into small sausages approximately 2cm in length then fry gently in a pan of hot oil. You should aim to cook 3-4 jamuns at a time as they expand during cooking. Do not allow the oil to over heat as the jamuns will cook too quickly on the outside but not be cooked through in the middle. Drain the jamuns onto kitchen paper then place into a clean pan with the orange syrup. Serve hot or cold with toasted coconut, to finish.

Pistachio and Chocolate Burfi

Makes 20 Prep time: 20 minutes Ingredients 190g milk powder 150ml double cream 1 tbsp butter or ghee 1 tsp ground nutmeg 50g pistachio nuts, chopped 397g can Carnation condensed milk

Serves 4 Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes Ingredients 25g raisins 75g dried apricots, chopped 100g pudding rice 3 strands saffron pinch ground cardamom 397g can Carnation condensed milk 25g almond slivers 25g pistachios, chopped 1tbsp rose water

Method Mix the milk powder and double cream in a bowl until it forms a thick and crumbly paste. Heat the butter or ghee over a low heat for a couple of minutes, stir in the nutmeg and pistachio and toast for a few minutes. Add the cream mixture and the condensed milk; the mixture will be solid to start with and will soften as you continue to heat it. Keep stirring until the mixture starts to come away from the sides. Pour into a non-stick tray and spread to a 2cm thickness. Spread over the melted chocolate and decorate with gold or silver leaf. Allow to cool and then cut into square shapes.

To finish 100g dark chocolate, melted gold or silver leaf

To finish, chopped pistachio Method Soak the dried fruits in a little hot water. Meanwhile place the rice in a pan with saffron and cardamom and 600ml water, heat gently and bring to the boil. Simmer very gently for 20 minutes. Add the dried fruits and condensed milk and heat for a further 10 minutes, stirring continuously. Add the almonds and pistachio and take off the heat. Serve warm, finished with chopped pistachio.

In a previous article, we looked at the case of Société des Produits Nestlé SA – v- Cadbury UK Ltd (2012), in which the High Court allowed Cadbury’s application to register as a trade mark the particular colour purple that has become associated with their brand. That decision has now been overturned by the Court of Appeal. Under the Trade Marks Act 1994, a trade mark cannot be registered if it does not satisfy certain prescribed requirements, including that it must be a ‘sign’ and be capable of being represented graphically. A trade mark can also not be registered if it is devoid of distinctive character, unless before the date of the application for registration it had in fact acquired a distinctive character as a result of the use made of it. Cadbury had originally applied to register the trade mark and the Intellectual Property Office (“IPO”) had approved the application on the basis of the evidence of distinctiveness acquired through use of the mark. Nestlé opposed the application, but the IPO hearing officer approved the use of the trade mark on the basis of the evidence which proved use of the colour purple on Cadbury’s Dairy Milk since 1914. Nestlé appealed to the High Court on the grounds that the mark was not a sign capable of being represented graphically as required by the Trade Marks Act and so was not registerable as a trade mark. The High Court held that as a matter of EU law, single colours were capable of

being ‘signs’ for the purpose of the trade mark legislation. The Court were satisfied that the colour purple was associated with Cadbury’s chocolate by the public and therefore Cadbury were able to register their trade mark. Nestlé appealed to the Court of Appeal on the basis that the mark applied for by Cadbury did not fulfil the criteria that a trade mark must be a ‘sign’ and be ‘graphically represented’. The Court of Appeal agreed and overturned the decision allowing the registration of the trade mark. The Court found that the trial Judge had erred in principle and had misinterpreted the verbal description of the graphic representation of the mark. Cadbury’s application covered the registration of a shade of colour plus other material and was not therefore an unchanging application of a single colour. In the circumstances, the Court of Appeal was not satisfied that the mark constituted a ‘sign’ that was ‘graphically represented’. The lack of certainty which would be created gave sufficient reason for the decision to be overturned. The Court took the view that allowing registration of the mark would “offend against the principle of fairness by giving a competitive advantage to Cadbury and by putting Nestlé and its other competitors at a disadvantage”. ‘Inadequate’ Muslim Free School reopens Threat of closure if school does not improve conditions Earlier this month a public free school in Derby temporarily closed after being told to take ‘swift action’ about the way the establishment is being run. The Al-Madinah school, opened in September 2012, was reportedly forced to close after preliminary findings from an Ofsted inspection into the school gave it the lowest possible rating. There are claims that female teachers at the school were forced to wear hijabs (a Muslim head scarf) even if they were not Muslim. Other reports suggested that female pupils were looked upon less favourably than their male counterparts and were made to sit at the back of classrooms whilst the boys were at the front. School’s Minister Lord Nash has openly criticised the school for failing to keep pupils safe and provide a good education whilst also discriminating female students and staff. In a letter to the chairwoman of governors, Shazia Parveen, Lord Nash

ordered the school to provide evidence within one week that there was no discrimination between boys and girls, and alert all staff that they do not have to adhere to cover their hair. The letter read: “The Trust has manifestly breached the conditions of its funding agreement by failing to ensure the safety of children at the school; delivering an unacceptably poor standard of education; discriminating in its policies and procedures towards female staff; and failing to discharge its duties and responsibilities in respect of the governing body. “I will not tolerate breaches of the commitments you gave when entering into the funding agreement.” The letter also noted other actions that the school must take; including satisfying the Government that its curriculum is 'broad and balanced' and that it is welcoming to children of all backgrounds and faiths. Lord Nash warns: “Unless swift action is taken to address these concerns in a comprehensive way I will be compelled to terminate the school's funding agreement.” Shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg said the situation must be made open to the public, adding: “Given the confusion as to why the school has closed, and that pupils may be returning to the school on Monday, I would ask that these matters be clarified urgently in order to reassure the public.” Al-Madinah was one of the Government's flagship free schools after opening last year as part of Education Secretary, Michael Gove’s nationwide programme. Interim principal of the Derbyshire school, Stuart Wilson, said he had not received any complaints from colleagues regarding the dress code, which was made clear to all staff and applicants. Greater Manchester Police appeals for respect during festivities of Eid-ul-Adha

Police in Manchester are appealing for respect from visitors to the city during the Muslim religious holiday of Eid-ul-Adha. During this time there will be an influx of visitors to Rusholme’s famous ‘Curry Mile’ and officers will patrol the area to offer reassurance. Parking in the area will be suspended between 9pm and 6am on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 October. Inspector Dave Nutsey from Greater Manchester Police said: “Our officers will play their part to ensure the communities and those visiting are kept safe and that there is minimal traffic disruption to the area. “I would like to remind people coming to the city that any form of crime, antisocial behaviour and public disorder will not be tolerated and that we will take robust action against those participating in such actions. “Eid is a joyous occasion and an important date in the Muslim calendar and celebrations should reflect this. Anyone wishing to bring or cause problems is asked to stay away. “The Force has been working with the support of the Rusholme Business Association, the Council of Mosques and Manchester City Council to ensure safe and trouble-free celebrations. We have also been working with our colleagues in neighbouring forces to ensure that those travelling into the city from other areas do so for the right reasons so that everyone can enjoy the festivities. “Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Muslim community ‘Eid Mubarak’ and those visitors coming to Manchester will be given a warm welcome.” The restaurants of Rusholme’s ‘Curry Mile’ will remain open during Eid. End to foreign language support for driving tests

From April next year driving test candidates will no longer be able to use foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on test. The move, announced today by Road Safety Minister Robert Goodwill, follows a public consultation. Currently people whose first language is not English or Welsh can request prerecorded voiceovers for the computerbased car and motorcycle theory tests in 19 different foreign languages. Candidates can also use approved interpreters on theory tests and practical tests. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “We want to make sure that all drivers have the right skills to use our roads safely and responsibly. One area where we can help ensure this is by requiring all test candidates to take the test in English or Welsh, the national languages. “This will help to ensure that all new drivers will be able to understand traffic updates or emergency information when they pass their test. It will also help us to reduce the risk of fraud by stopping interpreters from indicating the correct answers to theory test questions.” The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) consulted earlier this year on a series of proposals reviewing the level of foreign language support available to candidates. This was in response to concerns about potential road safety implications and the risk of fraud, as well as the cost of providing translations. The response to the consultation was positive with more than 70% of respondents supporting the withdrawal of foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on tests. The consultation received close to 2000 responses.

Leaders from the world of sport, politics and religion came together last week to mark the third annual Unity of Faiths Festival in London. Organised by The Unity of Faiths Foundation (TUFF), individuals from all backgrounds were present to recognise the importance of inter-community dialogue and acceptance as the bedrock of community cohesion and understanding. In attendance were an array of dignitaries and public figures, including: the equivalent of the Sikh Pope who was in Britain for his first public visit, Akal Takht Jathedaar ji. A unique ‘Torch of Unity’ procession began on the 27th September, featuring 100 young adults from London schools, travelling on open-top Unity buses through Southall. During the lighting of the ‘Torch of Unity’, Dr Sheik Ramzy, Chair of the Muslim Council of Britain,

acknowledged the event for its originality. He said: “This is a unique and special organisation to bring every culture together all over the world. Let’s be united forever.” The former Grand Mufti of Palestine, Sheikh Abdel Salam Mraish, added: “Everybody must be true to each other. I am proud to be with such a young group of people who are embracing unity of faiths.” Following the torch ceremony, audiences were captivated by a series of keynote addresses by several VIPs who had flown to London especially for the launch. Dr. Shamender Talwar said: “Unity of Faiths is a journey we all need to be a part of. During the first festival three years ago we were surprised how positive the reaction was from the general public. “We had postmen, fireman, lawyers and doctors all turn up and celebrate unity in the community. Six weeks later the London riots began and Southall, which was one of the areas considered to be hit hardest was not affected.

“The festival grew from 8,000 to 25,000 which is testament to the fact that communities endorse the principles of TUFF.” The landmark event concluded with the third annual Unity of Faith Festival two days later with tens of thousands present. The festival provided London's multi-cultural community from all backgrounds and age groups, an opportunity to connect, break the barriers of misunderstanding and prejudice against a backdrop of free entertainment, food, drinks and social engagement. The festival built up a groundswell of support to the message of ‘unity’. Sports icon and England bowler, Monty Panesar, joined hands with the unity team, interacting with groups of people who had congregated to see the cricketer. Commenting on the atmosphere at the Festival, Panesar said: “Thank you for your positive energy and kind words. I hope to inspire the youth of the next generation”

A bold new exhibition, which illustrates Arab women’s love of sport, is getting some serious attention and breaking down cultural and gender stereotypes. Commissioned by Qatar Museums Authority, ‘Hey’Ya: Arab Women in Sport’, which runs until October 13th at the National Football Museum in Manchester, is an exhibition by the internationally renowned photographer Brigitte Lacombe and documentary maker Marian Lacombe. Hey’Ya, the title of the exhibition, is Arabic for Let’s Go reflecting the athletes’ energy and enthusiasm. The exhibition features a series of large-scale photographs of Arab sportswomen, from beginners to Olympians, from 20 different Arab countries, shown alongside videos by Marian Lacombe. The exhibition was conceived by Qatar Museums Authority to encourage more Arab girls to participate in sports and comes to Manchester as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture celebrations. The project was shot over a period of seven month starting in December 2011 when the Arab Games were held in Doha. With the support of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, Brigitte and Marian Lacombe were able to set up their own outdoor studio, working side by side, capturing the athletes practicing different sports ranging from Tae Kwon Do to swimming and equestrian. Brits think benefit claimants should work or move The vast majority (70 per cent) of the public think people affected by the benefit cap should be prepared to find jobs or work more hours and twothirds (65 per cent) say they should be willing to move to a cheaper property. Independent research published on 10th October shows that 60 per cent support the cap even if it means that those affected have to take a job, regardless of the pay. The Ipsos MORI report shows public attitudes towards the benefit cap and is published following the completion of its national rollout last month.

It finds that around three quarters of the public support the benefit cap in principle, yet 58 per cent think that politicians needed to do more to reduce the welfare bill. 50 per cent of us think that benefits are too generous and only 11 per cent think the benefits system is working effectively. The benefit cap limits are set at £500 a week for couples, with or without children, and lone parent households, and at £350 a week for households of a single adult with no children. The cap is in place nationwide for existing appropriate claimants and all new claims are subject to the cap.

It certainly proved to be a marathon evening at the Lancaster Hotel, London, where guests gathered to see 44 of Britain’s best curry chefs receive awards. Guests included secretary of state Eric Pickles, renowned economist Lord Meghnad Desai and Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer and one of the award’s longest standing sponsors. Culinary celebrities attending the event included Michelin star chefs Dominic Chapman and Atul Kochhar, the first Indian chef to win a star. It marked the culmination of a busy year for Dominic who has generously given his time to champion the cause of Britain’s curry chefs including travelling to Kolkata earlier this year for the Taste of Britain Curry Festival. The festival, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Kolkata, India, proved a great success with diners and gained huge media interest at home and abroad as the British took India’s national dish home. Lord Bilimoria admitted he ‘was in awe of what chefs do’ and applauded them for producing ‘some of the most complex and exotic food in the world at the cheapest prices.’

Lord Bilimoria also talked about the importance of integrity in a world full of uncertainty and the fact that the curry industry’s high standards were allowing it to shake of the vestiges of recession. A recurring theme among the speakers was the need for greater female representation at the awards. Lord Desai, who had flown back from Australia earlier in the day, amusingly put it in perspective, saying: “It always amuses me that when men cook they are called chefs and when women cook they are called women. What we need to see is more female chefs winning awards.”

‘Open to talks’ In a rare interview, Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud has told the BBC that the extremist group are open to ‘serious talks’ with the government. The decision comes after Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister in May this year and announced he was willing to open ‘unconditional talks’. Mehsud controls more than 30 militant groups in tribal areas and has seen thousands of people killed since taking over as chief of the country’s Taliban in 2009. In his time as leader, he has masterminded the campaign against Nato convoys in Khyber tribal region and Peshawar, emerged as a prominent fighter after reputedly leading a raid that captured 300 soldiers, and has a $5million FBI bounty on his head. Speaking to the BBC, Mehsud said: “We believe in serious talks but the government has taken no steps to approach us. The government needs to sit with us, and then we will present our conditions. “The proper way to do it is that if the government appoints

a formal team, and they sit with us, and we discuss our respective positions.” When pressed on why previous peace initiatives had failed, Mehsud blamed the government. He said: “The government of Pakistan bombs innocent tribal people due to the pressure of America... Drone strikes conducted by Americans were [backed] by Pakistan. Then the Americans pressed Pakistan to start ground operations in these areas, and Pakistan complied. “So the government is responsible for past failures.” Reports had also suggested the Taliban chief was responsible for recent attacks in public places, yet he was quick to deny the claims, adding: “We consider the safety of Muslims, of scholars, of mosques and madrassas as our sacred duty. “As for explosions which cause damage to the life and property of Muslims, we have denied any link in the past, we deny any link today. “We have targeted those who are with the infidels, America, and we will continue to target them.”

18 demonstrators stage unique ‘locked in’ protest against animal cruelty

Caged like animals Locked in cages and holding signs that read, “Try to Relate to Their Fate – Ban Animal Circuses”, employees of The Body Shop and members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India protested in Mumbai last week against the use of animals in circuses. The action marks World Animal Day, held on 4th October, and comes

in the wake of PETA India's ninemonth investigation of 16 circuses across India that revealed rampant abuse of elephants, horses, camels, dogs, birds and other animals. PETA India and employees of The Body Shop are calling on the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to follow the lead of Bolivia, Cyprus, Greece and Austria by

introducing legislation to enact a ban on the use of animals in circuses. “The Body Shop has always refused to test products on animals. When we learned from PETA [India] that animals in circuses are chained, beaten and denied everything that's natural and important to them – all for a lifetime of cheap tricks – we knew we had to act,” explained The Body Shop employee Prakash Kamat. “It's time that the [Indian] government banned the archaic use of animals in circuses, and parents should know that if their kids love animals, the last place they should take them to is the circus. “The Body Shop has inculcated its values in us, and we're proud to support PETA [India] in this lifesaving initiative under our employees' volunteering programme, Aashe." PETA India's investigation by experienced veterinarians who are also qualified as animal welfare assessors, along with other inspectors recognised as Honorary Animal Welfare Officers by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), found a host of unlawful abuse and neglect which had been aimed at the animals. Abuse included using weapons on the animals, such as nail-studded sticks, whips, clubs and ankuses (iron

hooks with spear-like ends), as well as the employment of untrained staff - An underage child was employed by one circus to shoe a horse, which could cause permanent damage to the animal. A host of animals had also died from inadequate care or had simply gone ‘missing’; Elephants, camels, dogs and other animals showed signs of severe psychological distress, including constant swaying, circling and even self-mutilation; and Birds

had their wings crudely cut to prevent them from flying. PETA India points out that the Rambo Circus has held shows without the use of animals at the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai and that the Great Champion Circus enjoys success without using animals in performances. One of the most internationally renowned and popular circuses in the world, Cirque du Soleil, also uses only willing human performers.

On Friday 11th October, the Nobel committee will announce the 2013 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and there is one name which seems to be on everybody’s lips; Malala Yousafzai. At just 14-years-old, the Pakistani activist was shot in the head by Taliban forces in her home country after daring to campaign for greater rights to education. Malala was on her way home in the back of a small pick-up truck used to transport children when a masked man stopped the truck before another shot her in the head with a pistol.

Dr Fiona Reynolds, of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, was visiting Pakistan at the time of Malala’s shooting and helped perform the life saving surgery. Over 150 armed men kidnapped the Libyan Prime Minster in a pre-dawn raid earlier this week, only to release the government official, hours later. Pulling Out US suspend aid following Morsi trial

The US State Department has confirmed reports that certain aid will be withdrawn from Egypt in response to the overthrow of the country’s first elected President in June. Mohammed Morsi was forced out of his position as the country’s leader by the country’s army, and since then an interim government, spearheaded by the military, has been in control. Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood party refused to work with the military which it says staged a coup and sabotaged Egypt's democratic gains after a revolt toppled autocratic President, Hosni Mubarak, in 2011. With the former President set to go on trial in November accused of inciting the killings of protesters, identical charges to his predecessor.

In all, the US would normally assure Egypt $1.55 billion in support, including $1.3 billion in military aid. However these latest announced cuts are likely to cut that amount significantly. The cuts include 10 Apache helicopters, at a cost of approximately $500 million, F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 tank kits and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. US officials also refused to transfer $260 million in cash assistance to the government until they can be assured that progress is being made towards electing a new inclusive government, through a fair and free election State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “The United States continues to support a democratic transition and oppose violence as a means of resolving differences

“I’m not taken seriously” 36-year-old Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat rues that directors do not take her seriously because of her glamorous image. She says that the saucy characters she has played over the years have given her fame, success and liberation, but she claims that at the same time this image has worked against her. Mallika has said that she’s bored with the ‘sexy siren roles’ that continue to get pushed her way from movie bosses. The actress is dismayed at being “stereotyped” and says that she’s never been given a challenging role in the movies at all. Mallika even showed interest in jumping at the chance to play the part of a supporting role, but one which would test her acting skills. She commented: "I don't just want to look pretty in films, do songs, have two-three dialogues... I am looking forward to doing interesting and challenging roles.” The actress feels there's a dearth of roles for actresses, even though Indian cinema is changing, and said: “Very few Bollywood films have meaty roles for actresses. Films like 'The Dirty Picture', 'Kahaani' come once or twice a year. Majority of films are commercial masala where heroines have (to be content with) glamorous roles, singing songs."

On Friday 11th October, Huggy’s Gym in Bradford will stage a unique production which focuses on young Muslim female boxers and the issues they face in society. Organised by the Common Wealth Theatre, the play hopes to provide audiences with an uplifting story about how any demographic can be successful in any field if they put their mind to it. National Champion, Ambreen Sadiq, and University Championships winner, Saira Tabasum, were both involved in the process of creating the production as both boxers were interviewed on real life issues they have tackled in the chosen career. Common Wealth spent one week working in Huggy’s Gym, with a filmmaker, choreographer, set designer, sound artist, boxers, boxing coaches and a cast of upcoming young South Asian performers. Aisha Zia wrote the production and explained where the whole idea came from, as well as her hopes for the “We wanted to write about young Muslim girls as this story is particularly close to my heart, and I always wanted to give voice to a generation of girls who might not necessarily speak out. “I wanted to explore themes of identity and belonging but in an unexpected and surprising way. I want to challenge the audience’s

perceptions of race and religion, and try to change social stereotypes. Common Wealth make political theatre and aren't afraid to challenge the status quo. We work with communities, gather stories and respond to people’s needs, working from the ground up.” Director, Evie Menning, also explained how the subject of Muslim female boxers is something which must be discussed further if the “People have been very positive, very supportive and we feel there is a genuine interest in the piece, which will make for exciting developments. “People are always surprised when we tell them Ambreen Sadiq is 19 years old, from Keighley, Bradford, and is the National Champion, we’re hoping that this piece will examine where that surprise comes from and what our expectations are of young Muslim females. “We’re aiming to make a positive piece that celebrates achievements and challenges stereotypes and I think people are very receptive to that as so much of what emerges from Bradford is usually negative.” A sneak peak of the play will be available at Huggy’s Gym, Bradford, BD5 7DU, at 7pm on the 11th October. Jaguar to debut state-of-the-art C-X75 prototype

Hybrid DEBUT: Jaguars’ C-X75 will be showcased in Birmingham next month

The Jaguar C-X75, the prototype state-of-art hybrid supercar, will make its Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show debut, as the centrepiece of the Jaguar Classic Parts stand. Held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, the stand, in collaboration with Jaguar Heritage, will boast an impressive selection of classic and modern Jaguars. Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 concept, which has been provided by Jaguar Cars, in 2010 and has marked the beginning of a new

chapter in innovation and technological advancement. The C-X75 can achieve 100mph from standstill in less than six seconds and can continue on to a top speed of 220mph. Considering these impressive performance statistics, the C-X75 is capable of producing less than 89g of CO2/pkm and will even run with zero emissions for up to 60km. Jaguar Classic Parts welcome visitors to come to their stand in Hall 20 to see this “ground-braking” hybrid vehicle. This year’s stand also includes some historical vehicles from the Jaguar Heritage collection. The cars on display will include: XK120, EType, XJ40, XJS, X300, XKR and XFR Rocketsports, all outstanding Jaguars from different eras. A further

highlight to this years’ stand in Hall 20 will be a wide range of genuine parts available on display. Jaguar Classic Parts are clearly stating that its commitment to the preservation of classic Jaguar cars has never been stronger. Jaguar Classic Parts technical advisers will be on hand to answer parts queries and give expert advice. The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, is the UK’s biggest classic motoring celebration. Spanning eleven halls, visitors can enjoy an estimated 1,500 cars and 350 motorcycles on display, ranging from the rare and exciting to prewar and retro classics, the sublime to the ridiculous, and many more.

TURBO Life may be moving at a snail’s pace, but Chevrolet’s latest movie partner – Turbo, certainly isn’t. The American brand has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation to celebrate the UK launch of Turbo, the tale of an unassuming little snail who wants to go faster. In the movie, Turbo gets sucked into the supercharger of a Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 drag racer, fusing his DNA with nitrous oxide. The next day, he wakes up vested with the power of incredible speed and accuracy, as well as some of the characteristics of an actual car, such as eyes that light up like headlights, and a shell that blinks red like taillights and makes car sounds and music from a radio. To celebrate the launch of the film, Chevrolet is participating in a series of pre-screenings of the new animation at cinemas across the country during the first two weekends of October, taking place in Cambridge, Livingston, Oxford, Poole, Portsmouth, Stockton and Wolverhampton. The events will be used by Chevrolet dealers as a customer relationship incentive. "Turbo is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and we couldn't be more excited about this collaboration," said Tim Mahoney, Chief Marketing Officer,

In 2012, Bradford-resident Mohammed Khan took it upon himself to set up a local football team with nothing other than family support and a passion for the game. Fast forward just over one year and the 26-year-old is now manager of Toller FC 2013 Bradford Sunday Alliance Third Division runner-ups. A remarkable feat for a club whose changing room is a mile away from the ground and pitch remains a struggle to play on following council cuts. However, the father of two, football enthusiast is delighted with the way his club has evolved in such a short period of time and already has lofty ambitions for the future of the Bradford outfit. “Last year was fantastic as we got promoted into the second division of such a hard league at our first time of asking,” Mohammed explains. “We are currently fourth in Division Two and pushing for promotion already after five games which shows that the club is certainly on the right path.” He added: “I set up the club using money from my own pocket just wanting to help out some local young lads and get them off the streets. I had no investors and it is sometimes hard to fund things on my own, such as kits, nets and balls, but I just try and make the team as enjoyable and fun for the players as I possibly can.” The self-employed manager told how the side constantly has more than 25-30 players turn up to every training session with new players always welcomed to come down for trials. The family run club, which includes Mohammed’s brother, Waqas Khan, as club secretary, is already

becoming an important part of the community, helping football 75 per cent of the squad is made up from Asian players whilst the remaining quarter is a split between black and white players. With such cultural diversity in the club, Mohammed explains how the side is an excellent example of a cohesive mixture of races. He said: “It is great to see so many young Asian lads progressing in the sport; we haven’t really had anything like it before. “Some of our players are different class. We have one, Irfan Khan, who has represented Pakistan before, playing for the side as well as a number of local lads. “We also actually had a pre-season friendly against a Pakistan XI and managed a 1-1 draw against them which again shows how far this club has already come in such a short space of time.” With such interest in the club from local footballers, there are also potential plans to hopefully start a girl’s side and a youth team in upcoming seasons.

However, for the time being, a second promotion in as many years would be the perfect gift for Mr Toller FC…Mohammed Khan.

Vanzie Leeds Met student fights his way to victory

A Leeds Metropolitan University student hopeful is celebrating after defeating the captain of the Irish Olympic boxing team to win his category in the prestigious Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan, Ireland last weekend. Ashley Vanzie, a final year BSc (Hons) Sport, Physical Activity & Health student from Dewsbury, took home both the prize for the 81kg open class category and the best boxer of the tournament award, becoming the number three-ranked light heavyweight amateur boxer in England in the process. Last year, the Rio 2016 Olympic hopeful reached the semi-finals of both the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) Championships and the national championships. Forced to step down from the finals of the national championships with a chest infection, Vanzie became determined to succeed and entered into the prestigious international Haringey Box Cup, winning gold and being voted boxer of the tournament by the Boxing News. Spurred on by his success, and despite hearing that English fighters ‘couldn't compete abroad’, according to official regulations, Ashley decided to put his name down for the Celtic Box Cup and was thrilled to find out that the ban had been lifted, days before the competition.

Sahara Force India was out of luck in Korea as both Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil retired from the Korean Grand Prix. A braking error saw Sutil crash out on lap 24, taking Mark Webber with him, whilst Di Resta’s race was finished with just five laps to go, after coming off the track. Speaking after the race, Sutil said: “I was quite unlucky on the first lap because after Massa spun everybody headed for the inside and somebody hit me on the side of my front wing. “The damage was not too bad but I still had to pit for a new one. As the race went on I was able to fight back quite well and after

the safety car I was in P12 and not planning to pit again. “At the restart I lost the rear of the car under braking for turn three. I really don’t know why because I was not braking late and the car just snapped. I hit Webber so I apologise for ending his race. It’s a disappointing end to the race because I believe there was still a chance of a point.” Di Resta added: “The performance in the race was not where we wanted it to be and the front tyres were wearing out too quickly. So we need to have a rethink ahead of Suzuka and go there determined to have a clean race.”

Beating off competition from Brighton and Hove Albion, as well as West Bromwich Albion, Dhanda is the first player of Indian origin to play for the Merseyside club. The 14-year-old arrived at the club's Kirkby Academy in July and thanked his family for their support, following him across the country. Upon receiving the honour he said: “Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world and my aim is to take every opportunity to progress to the first team and do my family proud, they have always been there for me. “My father has only missed one game since I was about seven years old. It's down to the support of my family that I am where I am now. “These awards are really important for Asian football and it's good that so many role models are being recognised.” Also successful on the night was Wigan Athletic scout Irfan Kawri, who walked away with one of the top awards, the ‘Inspiration’ honour. Kawri’s dedication to the sport has to be admired. Not only does he put in long hours in his role scouting and writing reports on Wigan’s opponents across the country, he is also a coach and physical education teacher. The football enthusiast is also credited for his work with Liverpool FC’s medical chief Dr. Zaf Iqbal, co-ordinating PE projects. “I’m very fortunate to have this career, but I’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices,” said Kawri. “I’ve been able to do it thanks to the support of my wife and parents. I started at Academy level in 2008 and now I’m doing my UEFA B coaching course at Macclesfield Football Club. “I was a trainee [footballer] at Rochdale, but that didn’t work

out and I went to university. Then I went back to the club to start my coaching career and it led to the scouting role at Wigan. It’s possible to break down barriers, but it takes determination and resilience.” The Asian Football Awards (AFA) were set up to highlight the positive impact made by Asians within the UK football industry and engage with organisations and individuals to help increase participation levels.

The Asian Football Awards 2013 finally landed at Wembley Stadium last weekend, and out of almost 100 nominations, just 16 winners were crowned, one from each category. From Non-League Player of the Year, Jasbir Singh, of Solihull Motors; to Player of the year, Swansea City’s Neil Taylor, every level was represented during the second annual awards ceremony.
