A long weekend, which threatened to be marred by the English Defence League’s protest through Bradford, went mainly unscathed thanks to a ‘united city’. Police officers outnumbered the EDL supporters by almost two-toone on Saturday 12th October as the short-lived protest proved a peaceful affair with only a handful of arrests. More than 1,000 officers were in attendance to ensure the event remained a passive one, whilst approximately 150 counterdemonstrators held their own event in the Urban Garden. The police operation is believed to have cost approximately £1million yet Bradford South Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Simon Atkin, believes the cost was worth it for the success of the day. He said: “The significant planning and partnership work alongside Bradford Council which preceded these demonstrations has resulted in a successful and professional policing operation. “Yet again, Bradfordians have shown the level of community spirit which exists in our city and have not reacted to provocation. “I am extremely proud of the response from local people, which has ensured today’s events passed peacefully and with the least disruption. “I would also personally like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to bring about this positive conclusion. “The fact that the public went about their business during this

time, is a real testament to their resolve. “People remained calm, supporting the police and our partners throughout. We are now working together to return the area back to normality.” Preceding the day was a unique initiative, organised by Bradford Together – a banner organisation consisting of groups including Bradford Women for Peace, Bradford Muslim Women’s Council, Unison, Bradford TUC and HOPE Not Hate. On Friday 11th October thousands gathered in Centenary Square to show their solidarity and opposition to the EDL, taking part in a number of activities. More than 2,500 green ribbons were given out as a symbol of peace by the Bradford Women for Peace, whilst thousands of cards
were signed and joined together to create a giant ‘Wall of Peace’. Bana Gora is the CEO of Bradford’s Muslim Women’s Council and a leading figure in Bradford Women for Peace. The avid peace protestor told the Asian Express that it is time for the EDL to have restrictions put in place to prevent the right wing group from demonstrating in certain cities. “Today is leading on from 2010 when the EDL came to Bradford and a group of women from diverse backgrounds religions, faiths, came together to say we don’t want your problem here,” she said. “We just want to send out a message of solidarity, a message of peace and that women are standing together and that’s basically what the Bradford Women for Peace movement is about.

What they say: Kashif Qureshi I think it was a really successful day to be honest. We have to respect people’s rights for freedom of expression even if we disagree with them. At the end of the day they were always going to turn up and the police did a fantastic job to ensure the day was peaceful. It was good to see no youths getting overly-involved with either side this time as well. Previously, when the EDL visited Bradford, there were clashes between a lot of the younger demonstrators but they seem to have learnt from this. There seems to be a greater understanding from all sides on how to handle the event. Fareen Hussain Unlike previous years I didn’t hear a lot about the latest EDL protests which is surely only a good thing. I didn’t hear anybody on social media saying ‘let’s go down’ or anything like that; it just seems that the majority of people decided to simply ignore it. Local communities have learnt from the past and it was pleasing to hear no youths had got involved too. I think the creation of youth groups and community meetings has helped them realise that, by reacting to these protests, they risk giving Bradford a bad name and we don’t want that. “It is lovely to see so many people here today; you have got men, you’ve got children, women, everybody.” Sulina Ulah, director of Bradford’s Muslim Women’s Council added: “No organisation has the right to eat away the very scarce public resources that we have, not at this time of austerity. “Do we want people to get healthcare, social care or do we want policing for these violent, racist protests?”
Amjad Pervez The response by the churches, the Council for Mosques, and all religious organisations was an exemplary one. They showed how, as a community, everybody can come together to create this strong united front against the stupidity which was happening in the city. One of the biggest problems is the effect on local businesses. It is not fair. We live in a democratic society which gives everybody the chance to speak their mind however when it hampers businesses cash flow, which they need to survive, perhaps we need to look at other ways of staging these events. We don’t want the city to be known just for marches and the EDL and that is why there are lots of Bradfordians constantly working with the council to portray our city in a positive light.
“Yet again, Bradfordians have shown the level of community spirit which exists in our city and have not reacted to provocation.”

Baroness Warsi sends Eid message
Minister for Faith and Communities Baroness Warsi said: “At this special time of deep reflection and celebration to mark the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, I want to send my best wishes to those who are commemorating Eid ul-Adha.
“The spirit of unity and togetherness during this festival of sacrifice is ever present as thousands of Muslims complete their pilgrimage. “During this holy time we can all relate to the values of peace, compassion and giving – values
that are common to us all, regardless of faith or background and which can serve to unite our communities. “These values can inspire us and are also held closely between all faith groups who make a huge contribution to national life, working
hard all year round to bring local people together and make our communities stronger. “As you join in reflection and celebration with your loved ones, let me wish you a happy and peaceful Eid ul-Adha.”

Putting the pieces together
Work on the Piece Hall and Halifax's new Central Library and Archive has moved a step closer after the £25m contract for the construction work was advertised by Calderdale Council. The Grade 1 Listed Piece Hall will be restored and revitalised, creating a 21st Century heritage visitor attraction, harnessing the beauty and impact of the building with the addition of a state-of-the-art interpretation and learning centre, a new east extension and a re-designed courtyard. Councillor Tim Swift, Leader of Calderdale Council, said: “This is a significant milestone for the Piece Hall on its journey to become a world class heritage destination.”
Have a go at...snorkelling
Bradford Council is offering taster snorkelling sessions to young people this half-term holiday. Children aged 8+ will be able to try the popular activity at 30-minute taster sessions at Bowling Pool. A 10-week snorkelling course will then be launched at the venue in November. A total of seven sessions will run on Saturday, 26 October between 11.30am-1pm; Monday, 28 October between 5.30-6.30pm; and Thursday, 31 October between 4-5pm. Each session will cost £1 per child and all participants must be able to swim 50 metres. Places must be booked and paid for in advance by contacting Bowling Pool on 01274 727 577.
Test run
Highways staff at Bradford Council are showing true grit as they get ready to tackle the worst that winter can throw at the district's roads. The weather forecast may show it to be mild and damp at the weekend but on Saturday 19th October Bradford's fleet of 26 gritters will take to the roads in a gritting "dry run”. The exercise will help drivers familiarise themselves with the routes and make sure that there are no obstacles which are not shown on their maps. By gritting a short section of road each they will also ensure that their equipment, including global positioning system indicators, are up to scratch and ready for action.
Local charity donates tens of gifts to celebrate Eid
Gift Giving By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A group of selfless individuals visited Bradford Royal Infirmary earlier this week to ensure that no child would be without a gift this Eid. The team of four, from Bradford based Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), delivered more than 30 gifts to Children’s Ward 17 on Tuesday 15th October in celebration of the Islamic holiday. Members of the Bradford based organisation all contributed towards the purchase of the Eid gifts which were delivered to the
grateful children. General Secretary of NADA, Nazim Ali, was one of the individuals who handed over the gifts and said just to see the child’s smile certainly ‘made his Eid’. He said: “We realise Eid is a period of celebration for Muslims however; it is also a period where we should reflect and support the most vulnerable in society. To this end we felt the need to make a proactive difference. “When we presented the gifts to the children they were ever so happy and seeing them smile was priceless, it certainly has made our
Eid.” Nazim felt a personal connection with the Children’s ward after spending a prolonged time in the unit during his own childhood. “On a personal level, this was a poignant moment for me since as a child I spent a significant period at the Children's Ward in BRI as I suffered from Tuberculosis,” he explained. “I can empathise with what these children are going through and it brought back memories. To have been involved in the distributing of the toys was understandably a special moment for me.” Cath Piggott, play specialist at the BRI, was delighted to see such generosity and explained how much the gesture meant to all the hospital’s stakeholders. “It is absolutely brilliant,” she said. “No child wants to be in hospital at any time and especially
THANKFUL: BRI play specialist, Cath Piggott, was extremely grateful for the donations
when they are celebrating Eid. “I think they are all a bit overwhelmed because they saw all the gifts. We appreciate it and they do too. “I didn’t expect anything like this so it is really love. “It is a lovely thing for everybody. It cheers the parents up as well because they can see their children are happy. All children love presents and it is great for the adults to be able to see their kids enjoying themselves. “It is fantastic for the staff as well. When everybody is happy it makes our job easier and helps create the relaxed atmosphere.” The group now plan on repeating the gift donation programme in the near future, whilst other fundraising events are always ongoing.

A new cycle plan for Wakefield is to be considered by senior Councillors at a meeting of Wakefield Council’s Cabinet. The Wakefield Cycle Strategy will inform how all highway, maintenance, new developments and cycling infrastructure schemes are developed for the benefit of cyclists in the district. This strategy ties in with the cycling legacy and is also designed to complement the West Yorkshire Cycling Strategy. Bradford crowned Britain’s Curry Capital
They did it in 2011; they did it in 2012; and now, in 2013, Bradford has once again been crowned the Curry Capital of Britain. For an unprecedented third year in a row, the West Yorkshire city clinched the top accolade ahead of places such as Manchester, London and Glasgow, to continue their dominance in the awards. Bradford's unique bid included the creation of a limited edition curry flavoured crisp, developed by local company Seabrook and Bradford restaurant Akbar's, as well as a Poppadomathon. The team in charge of this year’s bid included other restaurants such as Aagrah, Kiplings, Omar's, Shimla Spice and Zouks. Faisal Hussain, manager of Shimla Spice, Shipley, explained how Bradford’s love for curry has helped the city become a leader in the field. “Bradford is the Premier League for curries,” he said. “There are so many fantastic restaurants in the city that we certainly deserved to be recognised as Britain’s ‘Curry Capital’. “For this year’s bid, we put together an expert team and have worked extremely hard to retain the title by doing things such as the curry flavoured crisps. “To win the title just once is a real honour, but to now be named champions a record three times in a row, it is unbelievable and fantastic for Bradford.” Bradford already hosts the annual World Curry Festival and this latest accolade reaffirms the cities position at the top of the curry industry. Bradford Council's Executive Member for Employment, Skills and Culture Councillor, Susan Hinchcliffe, said she was delighted to see the title return ‘home’. “It just shows we're unbeatable as a city,” she said, “I want to thank our superb restaurants, the Bradford tourism team and of course Seabrooks crisps for making the bid that extra bit special this year. They have all contributed to this wonderful success.

A group of Sikhs from Leeds are hoping to raise awareness of a special poppy appeal in build up to this year’s Remembrance Day. The poppy is the national symbol used to commemorate the efforts of all the soldiers who died in battle during the First and Second World Wars. Since 1922, the paper replicates have been created for the public to purchase and raise money for the Royal British Legion and now the fundraising campaign has been expanded. Wooden stakes, with poppies attached, have been used in the past to place in the ground, and the latest initiative involves stakes in a range of designs, created to commemorate different religions. A wooden cross (Christianity),
Symbolic poppies for every religion
crescent (Islam), star (Judaism) and Sikh Khanda are all available for purchase from the Royal British Legion and offer different faiths the chance to pay respect to fallen soldiers from their respected religions. Leeds-resident, Byara Singh has brought hundreds of the Sikh Khanda poppies to the Yorkshire city with collections taking place at local Gurdwaras. More than 83,000 Sikhs were killed in the First and Second World
Wars, whilst over 100,000 were injured in battle as they stood alongside British troops. Mr Singh explained how important the campaign was in recognising the significant contribution of the Sikh community in the two wars. He said: “Sikhs were involved a lot in the First World War and thousands upon thousands died in battle. “This campaign helps bring attention to their contribution and allows us all to pay respect to
different communities whose war efforts were very substantial.” This will be the third year that the Sikh Khandas are available and their prominence is growing every year. The idea for the Sikh Khanda Poppy Project came from a Derbybased teacher who, after a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum noticed that there were special poppy holders to commemorate other religions but not one for the Sikh community. This led Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa,
and his cousin Jaz Rai, to design the Sikh Khanda holder which is now produced in the thousands by the Royal British Legion’s poppy factory. Mr Dhindsa spoke of why the project is so important. “I felt it needed to be made because I want more young Sikhs and the public to be aware of the great contributions the Sikhs made during both world wars in helping the allies fight the Nazis and fascists,” he said. “We just did not want these names to be forgotten and for nobody to put poppies down next to their names just because a particular poppy was not available. “I feel that a better understanding of the role of Sikhs and their contribution during the wars might also educate those that see the turban and the beard as a threat.”
“This campaign helps bring attention to their contribution and allows us all to pay respect to different communities whose war efforts were very substantial.”

attracted visitors from all around the world as they act out their comical sketches. The pair often relate back to their Bengali heritage and have subsequently attracted a large South-Asian following, yet the
humour in every sketch can tickle anyone, regardless of background. Catching up with the Asian Express, Ali spoke about the brothers rise to fame and how lucky he is to have a sibling like Shaheen.
Brothers Ali and Shaheen Shahalom have risen to fame following their hit YouTube channel
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Q. Why did you decide to make these videos? A. I've always been a creative person. Doing Drama & Theater at GCSE and A-level gave birth to this passion of playing around with different characters and improvisational acting. Additionally, I used to love making random videos on my phone or my laptop of me and my friends just messing around. When I first discovered YouTube, it seemed like the perfect platform to combine these two interests. Eventually, that's exactly what happened. My little brother and I have always been close, so he naturally became my comedy partner. Q. What was the initial response? A. I think people genuinely liked the idea of two brothers bonding so well and there aren't many sibling partners on YouTube. Furthermore, having a British-Bangladeshi ethnicity, I noticed there wasn't really much content on YouTube catering for that demographic. So we also made comedy videos conduced from Bengali culture and
Ali Official these sketches are some of the most viewed videos on our channel. All these things gave us unique selling points, creating a positive and popular response. Q. What do you enjoy most about making your videos? A. For me, making someone laugh or smile brings me so much happiness. To be able to do that to someone through our YouTube videos is such a wonderful feeling. We've also been fortunate enough to support various campaigns and charities through the work we do. To be able to help others in need, through something you love doing is also such a rewarding feeling. Q. What’s it like working with your brother? Sibling rivalry? A. Working with my little brother
feels so normal. How we are oncamera is exactly how we are offcamera, which makes filming very comfortable for both of us. I'm fully aware that a lot of siblings don't get along or have indifferences. However, my little brother and I seem to defy that notion. I'm not quite sure why were so close, but we get along so well and have so much love for each other. There isn't really any rivalry, but there's plenty of teasing and messing
around. Q. Finally…What are some of the best comments you have ever received? A. To me every comment or tweet or e- mail means something different. The fact that people think we're even worthy to be watched is a crazy feeling, especially when those figures have now surpassed into the millions. If I had to choose though, I think it's the emotionaldriven ones that really strike a chord
with me. Every now and then, I’ll receive a message expressing how someone has been through some sort of stress or trauma, but our videos have helped them through it. Just being able to brighten someone's day up for a split moment, is such a euphoric feeling. I'm incredibly grateful for all the nice comments and all the support and I hope people can continue to offer their love and respect.

A photograph of a beautiful, unique ice sculpture has been put on temporary display at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery. The artwork, by Andy Goldsworthy, shows layered triangular pieces of ice that are arranged in decreasing size in a sweeping abstract shape. The sculpture resembles a fish and the individual pieces of ice appear to be its scales or its skeleton. ‘Ice Fish’ (1987) will be on display in the Bradford Council-run museum until Thursday, 31 October. It is the latest in Cartwright Hall’s Picture In Focus series, which is a regularly changing painting, drawing or photograph taken from the fine art collection held by Bradford Museums and Galleries. BACK IN BUSINESS: Guests at the opening of the new establishment on Manningham Lane, Bradford
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Just three months after a devastating fire spread through a Bradford Supermarket, the local business has launched its latest venture in the form of Food-2-Go. Located on Manningham Lane, the new eatery is the latest extension of the Pakeezah Group and was officially opened on Friday 11th October with hundreds of guests in attendance. The £300,000 establishment was built to replace the Ingleby Road store, which remains closed for the foreseeable future. Fire had destroyed hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stock and caused millions of pounds worth of damage to the store during the month of Ramadan. The new Food-2Go store offers the same wide range of authentic Asiancuisine and has already proved a big hit with its customers. “We have been established in Bradford for more than 40 years and so the public know what they are getting when they visit one of our stores,” Pakeezah Director, Mohammad Jamil explained. “The launch went really well and we have been really busy since
opening our doors with the public clearly delighted to be able to receive their Pakeezah food again. “My brother, Shamas-Ul-Haq, and I thought long and hard about the best way of officially announcing our opening. After contemplating a range of celebrities we decided there was only one person who truly fitted the bill and so our mother, Gazim Fatima, was selected to cut the ribbon.” He added: “She has been an integral part of the company since day one, and so we thought it was only fitting that she did the honours.” The Bradfordbased company was founded in 1967 by M a z a h r- U l - H a q with a small store in Undercliffe. From these humble beginnings, the company has witnessed a sub-stantial growth and has become one of Bradford’s most recognisable brands. The family-run business established itself as the city’s first ever Asian-purpose supermarket 17 years ago, and expanding into a range of stores. Despite the fire in Thornton causing the business a major setback in its trading, Mohammad Jamil explained how important it was to reopen as soon as possible to cater for the customers. “As soon as the fire hit the

Home Office figures show the number of reported cases has tripled in the last three years
One in five marriages is a sham One of Britain's most senior registrars has warned that up to one in five marriages conducted in civil ceremonies may be bogus. Mark Rimmer, the chairman of the Local Registration Services Association, has said that around 20% of weddings in urban areas were suspicious, the worst it has ever been. But Mr Rimmer said the number of sham marriages, which are likely an attempt to gain residence in the UK, reported to the authorities was "the tip of the iceberg" and that official figures are a "drop in the ocean" compared with the full scale of the problem. Home Office figures show the number of reported cases has tripled in the last three years to 1,800. He said the issue is now worse than in 2004 when the first legislation to combat the phenomenon was
introduced and that registrars are having to conduct ceremonies they suspect to be bogus "through gritted teeth". "We have seen huge increases in potential sham marriages presenting themselves to us, we now have more reports from registrars going to the Home Office, but I think that is the tip of a very large iceberg, and effectively the real scale of the problem is far greater than that that is reported to the Home Office officially. "Most registration officers are not immigration officers, they came into this business to facilitate marriage. So therefore they don't want to be cynical. "Unfortunately therefore what happens is the ones that are absolutely blatant get reported and there are some that are borderline
that slip through without being reported - and that is the iceberg under the water and that's huge - it is absolutely huge. "In an area like anywhere in London it is multiple times per week ... it would not be unreasonable to say that 20% of all our marriages are suspicious or have some elements of suspicion about them. "So one in five in London, probably in the other big cities as well it will be a similar problem. Obviously in county areas in the countryside it is not as big a problem, but certainly in the urban areas, with high areas of ethnicity it is significant." Mr Rimmer suggested that overall 15,000 of the 173,000 civil weddings that take place each year in England and Wales could be bogus - almost 10 times the official level.

• The government is planning to set up 40 colleges, each with 600 to 800 students, which will be tasked with training 14 to 19-year-olds in practical skills. The vocational offer of each college will be tailored to bridge the skills gap in their local communities, and local employers will make up at least 40 per cent of the college board. Pupils will study traditional GCSEs including Maths, English and Sciences as well as vocational qualifications in areas such as catering, healthcare and construction. The aim is to ensure they leave with the skills required by employers and are capable of seeking jobs in other areas, if necessary. Pupils will be prepared for the real world by attending classes in business clothes, taking part in work experience and working a full day from 8.30am to 5pm. The International Food & Travel Studio School in Bradford has been offering vocational qualifications combined with weekly work experience in Business, Food and Travel, alongside traditional GCSEs and A Levels, since September 2012. A group of seven young men from Bradford completed the gruelling ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ earlier this month before hosting a charity dinner to raise funds for water wells in the Philippines. In partnership with the Ummah Welfare Trust and the Bradford Filipino Association the team of avid fundraisers have raised more than £15,000 for the cause, equating to the construction of 33 water wells in the South Asian country. The idea was conceived by fundraiser Izhaar Ali. His interest in the Philippines arose four years ago whilst his grandfather was being cared for at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The 22-year-old explained how the nursing staff, many from the Philippines, showed such dedication and commitment to the care they gave his grandfather that he wanted to do something to thank them. Whilst out walking in the Dales with a
few of his friends earlier this year, the University of Bradford graduate dreamt up the idea of undertaking the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ to raise money and do something to show his gratitude for the care his grandfather had received. ‘Wells4thePoor’, was born. Izhar and his friends would undertake the challenge and raise enough money to establish 15 water wells in the Philippines. Following a successful trek, completing the challenge in well under the 24 hour time limit, the friends then decided to organise a charity dinner. Partnering with Ummah Welfare Trust and the Bradford Filipino Association once more, the ‘Wells4Poor’ team organised a sell-out charity dinner with over 100 people in attendance. The charity event and the auction by TV’s ‘Make Bradford British’ programmes’ Rashid Khan, brought in a princely amount
that more than doubled the original target of 15 wells. Izhar was delighted with the fundraising efforts and now has further plans to visit the Philippines and help install the water wells. He said: “After the success of the events we decided to look at travelling out to the country and actually getting involved with the construction of the 33 water wells in some of the poorest localities in Philippines.” For further information or to make a donation, please ring Izhar on 07812987961 or visit the just giving link www.justgiving.com/wells4thepoor

Team Minarets scale Britain’s second highest peak A group of enthusiastic fundraisers from Bradford dusted off their walking boots earlier this month as they came together to climb England and Wales’ highest mountain.

(NADA) which took on the challenge. Guided by avid rambler and NADA General Secretary, Nazim Ali, the team had no experience of climbing mountains yet were
eager to raise funds for the Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia’s Minaret Project. NADA who operate the Masjid, are currently aiming to build two minarets at the front of the establishment yet require £60,000 to undertake the construction. This latest effort has already raised almost a quarter of the final target, with £15,000 being donated so far, including £5,000 from one generous member of NADA. 100 per cent of donations have gone towards the ‘Minarets Project’ with group members covering their own food, travel costs and purchasing their own mountaineering clothing and essentials. Despite adverse weather conditions with regular rain, strong winds and mist, which constantly hampered visibility, Team Minarets successfully completed their goal. Upon reaching the summit, high winds and heavy rain had forced the cafe to close temporarily whilst the train was also MOUNTAINEERS: NADA’s Team Minarets at Mount Snowdon
delayed. However, this did not deter the teams enthusiasm as they all successfully completed the trek. Nazim Ali explained how great it was to see so many people involved in the climb and hoped there would be even more at future events. He said: “Some members of the group have suffered from broken legs and ankles in the past which highlights their colossal personal achievements and remarkable feat of endurance and stamina. “Our group on the day consisted of young people and is part of our personal and social development plan so that these young people can grow as individuals and engage in civic renewal. “Plans are already afoot to have similar initiatives in the future and we have already been inundated with requests by young people in particular who have been inspired by the ‘Team Minarets’ and want to engage in future treks.” He added: “We are grateful to all our corporate event sponsors, Fresh Fillingz Deli Bars, A1 Self Drive, Eco Fireplaces & Kitchens, Premier Accident Management UK and Kesser Jewellers, for their generous donations and support.” NADA has a proven track record in raising money for charity, and have raised in excess of £5,000 from annual Intercultural Football tournaments. Amazing gallery
The work of two of the UK’s most important 20th century painters, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, will be showcased at Leeds Art Gallery from on Friday 18th October. As part of the ‘Art and Life’ exhibition, the duos work both individually and in collaboration with friends and fellow artists Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and the potter William Staite Murray will be on display. Visitors will be given unique access and insight into the archive, history and work of the artists, which will include key pieces from public and private collections in the UK as well as loans from Europe. Curated in collaboration with art historian and curator Jovan Nicholson, Winifred and Ben’s grandson, the exhibition will focus on the years of Ben and Winifred’s marriage from 1920 – 1931 and look at how their work shaped and informed the story of 20th century modern art in this country.
Fined
A Leeds landlord faces a hefty bill for allowing a tenant to live with a catalogue of defects and faulty installations needing repair in a privately rented property. David John Coates failed to appear before magistrates on Friday 4 October but was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,200. The case came to light when Coates’ Gledhow Mount tenant complained to the council’s housing regulation team that he refused to make repairs. Coates ignored the authority’s requests to investigate the issues so the council stepped in to conduct its own inspection.
Wrap up this winter
The council’s scheme to make homes cheaper to heat is now available to any Leeds homeowner. Until now, Wrap Up Leeds ECO was only available to people in receipt of certain benefits. Now, anyone who owns their own property can benefit from energy saving home improvements. Many of the improvements – like solid wall insulation and replacement boilers – will be significantly discounted. As well as cutting fuel bills, the scheme will also help make Leeds’ homes greener – better insulated homes also mean reduced emissions by using less energy to heat them. People can find out if they could benefit by calling 0113 395 0757, emailing wrapupleeds@leeds.gov.uk or visiting www.wrapupleeds.co.uk.

Improving English New TOEIC tests website encourages South Asians in UK to better their language skills By Anush Ansari
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
ETS Global UK has launched a new userfriendly website www.toeictest.co.uk for the Test of English for International Communications (TOEIC) tests. This launch comes as a part of their awareness campaign designed to help South Asians in the UK practice and improve their English language skills for personal development, employment and a better quality of life.
October 2013 - 3rd Edition
At present, many immigrants already in the UK struggle with day-to-day communication in English, hindering further employment and education prospects. Back in 2008, the Government’s own research showed that the employment rate for ethnic minorities was far below the average, citing language barriers as one of the main factors. The TOEIC tests’ questions measure the essential elements of the English language as used in the workplace and everyday situations. Many organisations in the UK and worldwide are already using the test scores as a standard measure of proficiency in English. The TOEIC tests can help increase chances of employment allowing for a better standard of living – just one of the many reasons why foreign nationals should consider taking the TOEIC tests. TOEIC test centres are available in many locations across the UK and worldwide. There are also easy-to-use learning resources available on the website to help test takers learn and improve everyday English and prepare for the TOEIC tests. Lizeila Martijn, Product Specialist at ETS Global UK said: “We have just launched our new user-friendly website so that people can see how the TOEIC tests and practicing the English language has been made as easy as possible. We want to encourage more people to take the tests so that they can learn whilst building their confidence.” The UK Home Office now accepts TOEIC tests for naturalisation and settlement purposes, in addition to visa and work permit applications. From 28th October 2013 onwards, the Home Office accreditation will allow migrants, and spouses or partners worldwide to submit their TOEIC test results as evidence of having taken a Home Office-approved English language test. The move is seen to encourage more people to learn and be comfortable in using the English language before applying for British citizenship or settlement in the UK.

Durga Puja celebration a great success Alok Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Reading West, has praised Reading’s Bengali Cultural Society on the success of the town’s biggest ever Durga Puja celebration. Traditionally, the festival of Durga Puja is an annual event which is celebrated all over India and across the world and is one of the most important events in the Hindu calendar. During Durga Puja local communities come together to mark the victory of the Goddess Mother Durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura, which celebrates the victory of Good over Evil. A three day celebration was held from 11th to 13th October 2013 at the Rivermead Leisure Centre. Each day of the festival began with morning prayers to Mother Durga and was followed by a full programme of activities and workshops for adults and children, as well as stalls selling food, jewellery, beauty treatments, designer sarees and Indian clothing. Highlights from the cultural programme of events included music and dance performances by the Manoranjan School of Indian Music, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, St. Crispin’s School Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra, the Indian Arts Centre, All Saints Church Choir, Dnyaneshwar, Gujarati Samaj Reading, Kalakunj, Udayan from Oxford, Woking Prabashi, Udok Performing Arts, the Bengali Cultural Society and many others.
Local sponsors of the event included Berkshire Van Hire, the Bina Tandoori and Specsavers. Some major Indian financial institutions such as the State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank also helped to support the event. Alok Sharma said: “I was delighted to be a patron of this event and work with the Reading Bengali Cultural Society over a
period of months planning for this event. I really think the Bengali Cultural Society has pulled off a brilliant and hugely successful event with attendance from all over the South East. I am sure this event will now become an annual fixture and grow and grow every year.” Sangita Nandi BCS Treasurer said: “Listening to the wonderful feedback and the realisation of how much having this festival in Reading means to people has definitely made
organising this event worthwhile. We look forward to building on this year's success to make it even more successful year on year.” BCS Secretary Prosenjit Banerjee said: “I would like to thank all of the sponsors who made this festival possible. We are already looking forward to next year’s festival.”

Asian family law solicitor Local
www.asianexpress.co.uk
October 2013 - 3rd Edition
DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our family law solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to divorce:
I have been married for less than a year, can I get divorced? No. The law sets a complete bar on divorce applications where the parties have been married for less than one year. However there is an option of annulment. Contact us for more information regarding annulment. What are the grounds for divorce? There is only one ground for divorce – that the marriage has broken down irretrievably (beyond repair).
What can I rely on in support of my divorce? You can apply for a divorce and base your application on the following ‘facts’: • Adultery • Unreasonable behaviour • Desertion • 2 years separation • 5 years separation
Will I have to go to court? Undefended divorce proceedings are usually straightforward and can be dealt with by paper with no requirement for either party to attend court. If your partner defends the divorce then it is likely you will have to attend court and we can assist you with this. What if my spouse simply ignores the paperwork? We must satisfy the court that we have used all reasonable means to serve the divorce petition on your spouse. There are several ways we can do this. Please contact us for further advice.
How much will it cost me? The current court fee for filing a divorce application is £410. Our legal fee depends on whether the divorce is defended or undefended and if there is any other work that is likely to arise depending on the circumstances. Please contact us and we will advise you further. Follow us next week for Part 2... Shabnam Riaz

Rhino Role Model
Leeds Rhinos stars Mitch Achurch and Joe Vickery recently visited the Hamara centre, Leeds, sharing their experiences and advice with young people. Mitch a born and bred in Australian began by sharing how he started playing rugby from six-years-old, and followed his father who also played Rugby league. At such a young age he enjoyed the game and knew he would never be able to give it up. At the tender age of 18 he toured around England and began to see the world of Rugby. Throughout his career Mitch has battle through many injuries and has had to go through various surgeries. During these low points he felt he had to make a decision of whether to continue playing or stop. His passion took over and pushed him to work harder and recover. He has always been inspired by other rugby players and loved what they did. This has made him even more passionate about the sport and spurred him on to play. When growing up, the Rhino’s forward had always been smaller and skinnier than the other players. But luckily for him he had a growth spurt over two years where he grew taller and put weight on. He shared his secrets with the young people at Hamara – eating healthy and training hard. In his early years Mitch gained a contract for a year with the Penith Panthers. During this time he knew he had to prove himself so he trained extra hard. Half way through the year he was approached by the Leeds Rhinos who offered him a 4 year contract, to which he was ecstatic. He shared his experiences - as a young person he did not like school and left at 15 years old. He knew Rugby League was the only way forward for him and so he kept out of trouble training hard and staying healthy. His keen interest in nutrition and health has helped him to become a better player. Mitch is starting a course at University this September. Joe Vickery is ‘Not your average Joe’ at 6ft 2” and weighing in at 99kg the former Rhino’s star also spoke to the eager audience. Vickery, as a young person, initially started playing football and longed to play the sport at the highest level, yet at the same time also developed a passion for Rugby League. He started playing Rugby League professionally at the age of 18 playing for Australian team Gold Coast Titans which he had a two year contract. This again led to ROLE MODELS: Leeds Rhinos Players, Leeds Rhinos scouting him and Mitch Achurch and Joe Vickery
Visit from sporting giants helps inspire youth
taking an interest in his skills. Rhinos offered him a contract. Joe’s advice to young people at Hamara was ‘continue your education’ just like him, it will always help. Joe has been educated well and has been to University before playing Rugby League he as well as working many different jobs to keep himself occupied The advice both players gave to the young people was stay in education and do well at it as it’ll help you to get a good job, even if it is Sport. They also highlighted the fact that sport has provided them both with guidelines to follow, and helped them to stay on the straight and narrow. MANUFACTURING: David Cameron spoke at the Construction Academy at the Halifax Skills Centre
October 2013 - 3rd Edition
Prime Minister visits Halifax By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Prime Minister David Cameron paid a visit to a local West Yorkshire Academy earlier this week as he recognised the county’s growing manufacturing contribution. Speaking at the Halifax Skills Centre’s Construction Academy, on Thursday 10th October, the Prime Minister was full of praise for Yorkshire and spoke of how the region’s economy plays a crucial role for the nation. Statistically, the county has the second highest manufacturing contribution to regional Gross Value Added (GVA), making up 15 per cent of Yorkshire and Humber’s total GVA. When asked about the importance of linking the North with the South via the proposed HS2 link, Mr Cameron stressed that it is vital that major cities, across the whole country, ‘not just
the south’, have the most efficient transport links. Speaking to the Asian Express, he said: “I think it is absolutely vital. I want to see an economic recovery and economic growth right across the country, north and south. The great thing about HS2 is that it links together eight of the ten biggest cities in Britain. “We have to build new railway lines because our current ones are running out of capacity so the only choice is do we opt for the traditional line or do we build a high speed one so I think it is only right to build the high speed line. “Obviously there are some people that are disappointed that HS2 doesn’t serve their particular town or city but the point to them which I would make is HS2 will free up a lot of capacity on existing lines so there will be more opportunity to run more services. “If we don’t make these sort of investments we will find that we will run out of that capacity.”

Serious7 Junior Leadership Team at Belle Vue Boys continue raising standards
A team of seven students at a local secondary school are paving the way for a new style of teaching, and results already show the programme is working. Belle Vue Boys’ school, on Thorn Lane, launched the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) three years ago and with the school continuing to show improvement year on year, it seems the future is bright for the Bradford establishment. The JLT was set up to give the student body a voice and are a mirror image of the senior leadership team. They discuss the same issues as their seniors and have regular meetings with the head of each subject to discuss different ways lessons can be improved to benefit the pupils. More than 550 young people attend the school and sixth form, yet it is a team of just seven, made up from pupils in Years 8 to 11, which make up the JLT. Covering subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Music and P.E, plus many more, the team are a self-titled ‘strategic organisation’ whose aim is to, as their slogan says, ‘Expand Excellence’. Chairman and Year 10 pupil, Hamidur Rahman Chowdhury, explained how he became head of the student body and changes which have already been made under the current team’s tenure. He said: “It was Mr Wrightson (assistant head teacher) who actually approached all of us to join the JLT and we all jumped at the opportunity. “Our slogan basically sums up what we are trying to achieve, in that we are expanding excellence from one subject or department to another one. We take good things which may be happening in English and do it in other lessons so we explode all these positives things across the school. “Each student has been assigned a role for a department, whereby we have a meeting with that subjects head and discuss we can take Hamidur, who is also Subject leader for English, added: “So far we’ve changed our uniforms; they’re completely different from
normal ones, as we are the student voice and we feel we need to stand out. “All the feedback has been really good and there is a positive buzz going around the school because of people wanting to join the JLT. “We are currently working on a teaching and learning prospectus – a booklet to show other schools what the JLT is and what the good things about this school are.” The team may only make up a small percentage of the school’s population yet there are now plans to hopefully expand the project to involve almost 50 students. A wider committee could be setup to allow more pupils to get involved with how the school is run and according to head teacher, Mr Colin Willsher, this is something which would only enhance the current programme. He said: “I have been really impressed with the team and their commitment to it all. How serious they take it is fantastic but most of all there clear sense of what they want to be done differently in the school is very reassuring. “Gone are the days when this school was run by adults for adults. I think this is now a school which is increasingly not only run for young people but also by them as well with them having their decisive say in the way things are run here.” Assistant head teacher, Mr Graeme Wrightson, has been at the school for five years and commutes every day from York. He has played an important part in running the JLT for the past three years and spoke of how the group’s progress is reflective of that of the school’s. “Belle Vue has been progressing every year that I have been here,” he explains. “Validated data from three year average, show that we have gone from 29 per cent attaining A*-C grades in GCSE to 44 per cent. “Having the student voice is absolutely paramount for us. If we put the students at the heart of everything we do we look at the

school from their eyes and see what they experience meaning we can then look to progress in the areas which require improvement. “Their work is absolutely crucial in the future success for this school.” He added: “We’ve had other head teachers from other schools visit as part of the Bradford Partnership Review, which is an authority inspection framework. Everyone who has come in contact with our JLT have said they would like to do some work with them as well so I do see it even catching on in other schools.” Current members of the JLT are: Chairman, Hamidur Rahman Chowdhury; Vice-Chairman, Ayaaz Ashraf; Adam Hussain; Hannan Shafique; Uzair Patel; Milan Demetar and Wajahat Ali.

Our very own Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of Asian Express, Andleeb Hanif took centre stage, sharing her advice with young people as part of the ongoing Role Models Series at the Hamara centre. The session begun with Andleeb highlighting that the main aim of the newspaper was to share news with the community and to give information on topical issues. Andleeb explained that her job is to make sure the paper produces lots of different exciting things to talk about every week. She also said news is information that you didn’t have, so catching
up with friends is also like the news. Then Andleeb shared her experiences growing up and how she loved to read and write, particularly writing ghost stories. She revealed that at the age of 13 she had even written her own book. As she grew older she got the opportunity to work for a mainstream newspaper in Bradford. But as part of her role she did not get the chance to write. Her dream was to provide good quality news with a focus on the communities. Around 12 years ago she met up with a business man who shared her vision of creating a newspaper designed for British Asians, and the rest as they say, is history.

Andleeb’s advice to parents was: “Support your children no matter what their dream is.” The advice to young people was: “If you enjoy doing something really, really go for it. Research the discipline of your passion and find out what it takes to go further and be inspired by others who have been successful. “Work with organisations like the Hamara Centre who can direct you towards the right people to support you.” Andleeb further inspired the youth by sharing with them the immense personalities she’d had the privilege to meet including Her Majesty the Queen, the Prime Minister, Amitabh Bachan, Shahruk Khan, Salmaan Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Kareena Kapoor and many many more.

£186 million boost for technologies of the future By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
A package of investment in the eight great technologies of the future will accelerate high-tech progress from the lab to the marketplace and help drive UK economic growth has been announced. Science and Universities Minister David Willetts set out how the UK will tackle some of the greatest challenges of our time, like climate change, energy storage, food production and population growth. Mr Willetts announced that a £70 million Agri-Tech Catalyst, which will help new agricultural technologies bridge the so-called “valley of death” between the lab and the marketplace, is open for bids. This will support one of the UKs largest manufacturing sectors, with the entire agri-food supply chain estimated to contribute £96 billion to the UK economy and support more than 450,000 jobs. Science Minister David Willetts said: “The British scientific and technological revolution is
The 8 great technologies
Big data, Space & satellites, Robotics & autonomous systems, Synthetic biology, Regenerative medicine, Agri-science, Advanced materials and Energy storage something to be proud of. By investing in these eight great technologies I firmly believe that the UK will continue to be at the forefront of the global technology race. The eight great technologies are areas which experts have identified as, with the right investment, having the potential to make the greatest contribution to a high-tech, UK industrial revolution. The new technologies help support the government’s wider industrial strategy – a long term approach across the whole of government to give businesses the confidence to invest and grow.
Science Minister David Willetts “The British scientific and technological revolution is something to be proud of. By investing in these 8 great technologies I firmly believe that the UK will continue to be at the forefront of the global technology race. “We are one of the most efficient research nations, and we get the best returns on our investment. We are investing to help translate our excellent science into commercially successful technologies which in turn boosts our businesses, creates jobs and drives economic growth.”

A brave social care worker, who rushed to the aid of a colleague struck down by a brain haemorrhage, has been honoured with a top award. Britta Ofori Kuragu was one of a string of unsung heroes helping some of Leeds’ most vulnerable residents who were recognised at Tuesday’s Adult Social Care Excellence Awards 2013. She was given the Colleague of the Year award at the packed ceremony held at Leeds Civic Hall. Those in attendance heard how Britta, a support leader with the council’s learning disability service, was out helping with a customer’s weekly shop alongside her well-respected co-worker Mandy Knight when tragedy struck last November. Britta contacted the emergency services and kept Mandy comfortable until an ambulance arrived. Sadly, Mandy died a short time later, just days before her 42nd birthday, yet thanks to Britta’s actions, her family were able to say goodbye. Britta’s award was presented by Mandy’s son James Knight and Leeds City Council’s executive member for Adult Social Care Councillor Adam Ogilvie. The awards were given out in 12 categories and were hosted by Dennis Holmes, Leeds City Council’s deputy director of Adult Social Care. Mr Holmes told the crowd of award-nominees: “This year our Better Lives for People in Leeds theme has really gathered pace, with our message getting out there that, in the face of incredible financial difficulties, we are proving that, through doing things differently, being smarter and innovating, we can, and are making lives better for the people we support.” Among Tuesday’s award-winners was social worker Joy Bvute, who accepted the Treating People Fairly award for tackling discrimination and celebrating diversity. Speaking after the awards, Cllr Ogilvie said: “It was a privilege not only to present some of these awards, but also to hear some of the inspiring stories behind those working so hard to make the lives of Leeds’ vulnerable residents safer and better. “Much of the work done by our Adult Social Care team goes on behind the scenes and this was a fantastic opportunity to recognise the effort and dedication that goes into that work and show just how much we value the contribution the team and its individuals make.”

“We do the best Halal gourmet burgers around” By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
W
ith a host of delectable halal gourmet burgers on offer, Leeds based Foodie is fast becoming one of the top eating hotspots in the city. Every order is handmade with only the finest local ingredients, whilst competitive prices ensure
you get restaurant quality meals at takeaway costs. Specialising in gourmet burgers, the mini ‘works of art’ are flame grilled, using 100% certified halal meat, minced inhouse, before being placed in a fresh bread bun with a host of additional features available. Chicken burgers are also crafted using only halal produce, whilst vegetarians can opt for the healthy bean burger
option, which is topped with melted cheddar, spicy jalapenos, chilli habanero jam, salad & mayo. Specialist pizzas are also made from scratch within the kitchen, following a unique secret recipe to ensure Foodie brings a touch of Italy to Yorkshire. Owners, Emran and Mr Lee, pride themselves in their food and insist there is nowhere quite like Foodie in the whole of the
city. “We make everything ourselves here and you really can taste the difference,” Mr Lee explains. “From the burgers to the pizzas, and right down to the garlic butter for the ciabattas, we do it all in house so everything the customer receives is fresh on the day. “All our food is up to restaurant quality and the
feedback we get from our customers is fantastic and we value it so much. “There is something for everybody here and we invite foodies to come down and see for themselves why we have a six star rating on JustEat.” Located on Roundhay Road, the eatery is a stone’s throw from the city centre and whilst delivery is also available from 12pm every day.

On the ball
“The Asian build is not that of a footballer...it may well be Asian ingredients in food, or the nutrition they intake, [but it is] not ideal for building up a physical frame” (the then Sheffield United manager Dave Basset, BBC TV 1995). The quote above sparked a report published in 1996 by Jas Bains and Raj Patel titled ‘Asians Can’t Play Football’ which was seen as an important breakthrough in reflecting both the frustrations and the aspirations of a section of the British community that seemed to be largely alienated by a sport they were so passionate about. In 2001 the Census put the percentage of Asians (Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi) at 4% of the total population and in 2011 that figure rose to 5.5%. If we roll back to 1996 it was estimated the figure of young Asian players con¬nected to English professional clubs to be a tiny 0.2%, but by late 2004 it had barely improved, rising only to 0.8% in Academies at Premier League Clubs. When it comes to British Asians playing with any degree of regularity there is one in the Premier League (Swansea City defender Neil Taylor), one in the Championship (Blackpool forward Michael Chopra) and one in the lower divisions (Wolves defender Danny Batth).
Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or by email at LPatel@LawBlacks.com
There are another five players on professional contracts, only one of whom, Walsall’s Malvind Benning, has made a first-team appearance, and three more on scholar terms. That is a mere 11 in total. It is clear to see that there is a huge disparity between the total number of Asians who are resident in the UK and the number that are breaking through the football ranks. As far back as 1991 a Manchester University survey found that young Asian males had amongst the highest rates of participation in football of any ethnic grouping. 60% of Bangladeshi, 43.1% of Pakistanis and 36.5% of Indians boys played football. The same survey found that 47% of young ‘white caucasian’ boys played regularly. So what are the obstacles in the way for the British Asians to break into the ranks of the football leagues? We have all heard the reasons why Asians don’t make it; Asian parents want their kids to be doctors; Asian kids are too weak; Asians prefer cricket; the Asian diet is unsuitable for a professional sportsman. If we look back over history we can see that times can change. The cultural landscape of British football has changed dramatically for Black players in the game. Forty years ago there were hardly any Black players in the game, now many Premiership squads could field a starting XI of Black players. So what needs to change for Asian players to break through the ranks and establish themselves as Premiership players? Zesh Rehman, who made 21 Premier League appearances for Fulham between 2004 and 2006, believes that British Asians need to come out of their comfort zone and play in competitive leagues with players from other backgrounds; “It can be said though that Asians don't help themselves by playing in Asian-only leagues. I can understand the reasons as to why they were set up but the Football Association should promote mixed leagues rather than communities setting up their own teams for their own people.” We at Blacks have a specialist Sports Law Department dealing with all aspects of advising sports professionals and organisations.
Degree Plans? If you, or your son or daughter, are thinking of starting a degree course in September 2014 then the submission date, of 15th January, for applications to UCAS is looming. With hundreds of institutions providing thousands of courses working out which course, and where, to study can be a daunting task. The following factors should all be kept in mind when making a decision: • Do you have a particular career in mind? If so is there a requirement for a certain type of degree course? • How do you want to study? It is possible to study on both a full and part time basis and combine work/family commitments with education. Many institutions will also help you gain work placements giving you an edge in the job market when you graduate. • Entry requirements – Do you have, or are you predicted, the right grades for the course you are considering? Also remember that entry requirements for mature students tend to be more flexible, with factors other than purely academic grades being taken into consideration. • Course content – Will your chosen institution allow you to study the modules you are interested in, or combine your degree with other subjects? • Cost – The cost of studying at different
institutions can vary quite significantly. This does not mean that the quality of degrees also varies, therefore take a careful look at what you will be paying. An increasing number of students are choosing to study closer to home in order to combat the financial costs of living away. The Bradford College University Centre, which is home to over 4,000 students, has been offering university level courses for over 30 years. There are over 150 full time and part time degree level courses to choose from, including foundation degrees. Bradford College is the largest provider of Higher Education in the UK – offering both Bachelors and Masters Degrees – outside the university sector. The College has a strong ethos and students are supported every step of the way. Not only does it provide a safe and secure environment, it also offers personal help to those looking to start a degree course by providing financial guidance and advice about fees. Excellent academic standards and support mean that Bradford College University Centre’s students are some of the most successful in academic study and employment in Yorkshire and surrounding regions.
Bradford College University Centre offers degrees in • Public Services & Sport • Law • Business & Management • Arts & Media • Film • Computing • Construction • Early Years • Engineering • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy • Hospitality & Travel Management • Ophthalmic Dispensing • Social & Community Practice • Teacher Education For further information please visit www.bradfordcollege.ac.uk or call 01274 433333. Invest in Yorkshire Aagrah raises £80K Bradford based Aagrah Group of Restaurant’s 31st Annual Charity Business Dinner was a great success, as acknowledged by sponsors and business guests alike attending this year’s gala dinner, which raised a staggering £80,000. The dinner was in aid of the Mosaic, a charity founded by HRH The Prince of Wales. Gyles Brandreth, TV personality and broadcaster, hosted the evening which included an amazing auction prize of one weeks stay at the 5 star, The Bonnington Hotel, Jumeriah Lakes, Dubai with return flights, kindly donated by the Bonnington and Eithad airlines. Among the inspirational keynote speakers were Nick Lane Fox, owner of Braham Park Estate, Aaqil Ahmed of the BBC and Michele Sutton OBE, CEO Bradford College who delivered passionate speeches on the theme of the dinner, Invest In Yorkshire. The black tie event provided a great opportunity for networking, with corporate and independent well established business leaders. The prestigious business dinner was held at the stunning Aagrah Midpoint Suite. The Charity Dinner started 31 years ago. The event endorsed Invest in Yorkshire as a theme, and Yorkshire as a booming business
destination, which is one of the most breathtaking scenic Shire counties in the UK and has many company headquarters based in this idyllic region. With easy travel access from all corners of the world, it has rapidly become a premiere international business & tourism destination. Often referred to as the business capital of the North, Yorkshire offers diverse business opportunities in finance, hospitality, retail, manufacturing professional and tourism and a greater return for investors on their investment. Mohammed Aslam MBE, Managing Director of the Aagrah Group of Restaurants expressed his gratitude to all those who supported the event and helped to raise a magnificent amount. Aagrah is a big supporter of local community events and charities and was delighted to support the Mosiac charity for 2nd year running. deprived communities. Mosaic’s vision is for all young people to be supported to realise their potential. With the help of volunteer mentors acting as role models, they aim to bridge the aspirations-attainment gap. By linking young people with
inspirational role models in this way, they boost their confidence, self-efficacy and long-term employability. Jannat Welfare International Trust, Aagrah’s charitable wing was set up to coordinate all fundraising activities to provide
much needed funds for charities both here and abroad. With generous support from so many, it has raised close to £1.6 million to date. The money has helped countless charities both home and abroad and made a real difference to so many lives.

curry chefs It certainly proved to be a marathon evening at the Lancaster Hotel, London, where guests gathered to see 44 of Britain’s best curry chefs receive awards. Guests included secretary of state Eric Pickles, renowned economist Lord Meghnad Desai and Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer and one of the award’s longest standing sponsors. Culinary celebrities attending the event included Michelin star chefs Dominic Chapman and Atul Kochhar, the first Indian chef to win a star. It marked the culmination of a busy year for Dominic who has generously given his time to champion the cause of Britain’s curry chefs including travelling to Kolkata earlier this year for the Taste of Britain Curry Festival. The festival, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Kolkata, India, proved a great success with diners and gained huge media interest at home and abroad as the British took India’s national dish home. Lord Bilimoria admitted he ‘was in awe of what chefs do’ and applauded them for producing ‘some of the most complex and exotic food in the world at the cheapest prices.’ Lord Bilimoria also talked about
the importance of integrity in a world full of uncertainty and the fact that the curry industry’s high standards were allowing it to shake of the vestiges of recession. A recurring theme among the speakers was the need for greater female representation at the awards. Lord Desai, who had flown back from Australia earlier in the day, amusingly put it in perspective, saying: “It always amuses me that when men cook they are called chefs and when women cook they are called women. What we need to see is more female chefs winning awards.” The Curry Chef Awards duly responded in the shape of Ashrafun Nessa Begum from Cutler’s Spice restaurant, Sheffield, and Fahmida Chowdhury of Taj Cuisine, Lower Stoke, Kent, who both became the first women to reach the podium. It was something of a family affair for Ashrafun whose son, Allam Shah Ullah, is the participants of three previous Taste of Britain Curry Festival. Ashrafun said: “I am absolutely delighted. We’ve always been very proud of our food here at the Cutler’s Spice and it’s a great honour to be named the best curry chef in my area.”

Princes Charles is set to embark on his most extensive India trip to date as he visits the South Asian country next month. From the 6th November, the Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla will undertake a nine day visit to India before moving on to Sri Lanka to the controversial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Prince Charles, who is also the heir to the throne in 16 countries, will be representing Her Majesty the Queen at the CHOGM. It will be the first time in 40 years — since 1973, that the 87-year-old monarch will miss the meeting of the voluntary association of 54 countries. The visit also represents the Royal couple’s third official visit to India together.
More time granted
British police said they have been granted more time to question four men arrested under anti-terrorism laws on Sunday in raids involving a special firearms unit. Magistrates said that the four British men, of Turkish, Algerian, Azerbaijani and Pakistani ethnic background, could be detained until Sunday 20th October. "A custody extension was obtained until Sunday," a spokesman from London's Metropolitan police said. In one of Sunday's arrests, officers fired special rounds from a shotgun to stop a car in which two of the suspects, both aged 25, were travelling on a busy east London street.
Royal Shares
Shares in Royal Mail peaked 48 percent above their privatisation price on Tuesday as a committee of MPs said it planned to summon bankers and the business minister to a parliamentary inquiry into the sale. The government, which last week priced the hugely oversubscribed sale of the near 500-year-old postal service at 330 pence per share, has been accused of undervaluing one of Britain's biggest state sell-offs for decades. On its first day of full trading, the Royal Mail stock hit a record high of 490p before closing up 2.9 percent on the day at 489p. The shares initially rose nearly 40 percent last Friday when they began trading conditionally.
SOLD: Mr Jayalal Madde was presented the keys by the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A self employed taxi driver from Liverpool is the first person to take advantage of the city’s bid to revive disused buildings after purchasing a house for just one pound. 20 people will eventually take up the offer yet it was Jayalal Madde and his family of three, who were the first recipients of their keys last week from the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson. The 48-year-old will now begin refurbishing the house in Granby, before he can move in with his wife and two daughters. The family man confirmed he now has the finance in place to start refurbishment works on the house and hopes he and his family will be able to move in within 12 months. “It is totally a dream come true. I wanted to become a home owner in this country but it was very, very difficult to get a mortgage from the bank,” explained Mr Madde. More than 1,000 people applied for one of the houses in the Granby Four Streets, Arnside Road and Webster Triangle East areas of the city, yet only a handful will be successful.
Mr Madde was thrilled to be one of the ‘lucky ones’ and couldn’t wait to get started on renovating his new home. He added: “Today I saw the inside for the first time. There is an entire floor that needs to be redone and we have to knock down some walls but it is not in very bad condition. The roof is OK and there are no structural problems so I am happy.” The purchase of the house means Mr Madde’s daughters Nihinsa, 12 and Sinali, 10, will have their own rooms for the first time since moving to the country from Sri Lanka eight years ago. Joe Andersen, the Mayor of Liverpool, handed over the keys and was pleased to be finally rolling out the project. He said: “We've had an amazing response to this scheme and have been absolutely inundated with applications, so to already be in a position to allocate the first 10 homes is fantastic. “Everything we are doing is about building a sustainable future for our neighbourhoods - and we've placed that at the heart of the decisions we've made when looking at the applications. “We are only looking for people who have a genuine commitment

INSIDE: Homes will need refurbishing before they can be moved in to
to bringing these properties back to life and turning them into a home they are proud to live in. “We're confident that Mr Madde is one such individual.” Mr Andersen said it should not be forgotten that bringing the homes up to standard would be a ‘real challenge’. He added: “Properties in these areas have lain empty for too long
- but in tough economic times, we need to be creative and look at doing things differently." As part of the scheme applicants for the homes had to live or work in Liverpool and be a first time buyer. They also had to be employed and agree to live in the property for a minimum of five years and not sub-let it within that time.
A disgruntled punter went into a betting shop armed with a metal bar last month and smashed 15 TV screens and two fixed odd terminals. Blackburn magistrates heard Farhan Choudhry told police he had lost £25,000 to the bookies over a number of years and explained how this thought had been on his mind during an all- night drinking session. Choudhry then visited the Betfred store, in Audley Range, where he subsequently caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. The court was told his rampage on the 25th September had caused £6,000 worth of damage, although this didn’t take into account the cost of closing the shop while repairs were carried out. Choudhry, 36, of Queens Park Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property belonging to Betfred.

A young man from Upper Belvedere, and an inspiring woman from Buckinghamshire, have reached the finals of the prestigious MS Society Awards 2013. 21 year old Priyal Raja is one of three finalists in the category of ‘MS Young Person of the Year’ after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) when he was just 14. Whilst at Trinity School, he raised awareness of MS by organising events and speaking engagements to raise funds and educate his peers and local community. His positivity and bravery in managing his often disabling symptoms, gained him the admiration and support of his fellow pupils and teachers, and he was made head boy during his time there. He hasn’t let his MS deter him and managed to complete his GCSEs and A levels and is currently studying for a degree in Film Production. He has also worked as a journalist for various online magazines and assisted on a Bollywood film set in India. He also produced a documentary about MS called “Coping with
MS”, which highlighted the condition within the Asian MS community and MS community on a national scale. Sanjay Chadha, founder of ‘Asian MS’, the MS Society support group, nominated Priyal after being impressed by how much he has achieved at such a young age. He said: “There can be a stigma attached to having a chronic illness within the Asian community; however Priyal dispels any prejudices by always being open about his MS. His can-do attitude is a shining example to all who meet him from any community.” Trishna Bharadia, from Marlow, will also be in attendance at the awards ceremony as one of three finalists in the category of ‘MS Volunteer of the Year’. Through her volunteer work for the MS Society as an ‘Asian MS’ committee member in her local area, Trishna has worked tirelessly to increase awareness, information and support for young Asian people living with MS, by speaking at general information days and events for the Asian community. She has been the editor for the Asian MS quarterly newsletter since 2011 and has almost single-handedly developed it into the current publication, which is uploaded on to

the Barts and The London MS Research blog read by hundreds of people from all over the world. One of her nominators, a member of Asian MS, Kanti Khalidas, explained why Trishna was more than worthy of such an award. She said: “Trishna was diagnosed with MS in 2008 at the age of 28, but since then has become a positive role model for people within the Asian community, where illness can often be swept under the carpet. She is loud and proud about her MS, preferring to let other people living with MS know that it’s not about what they can’t do; it’s about what they can do. “She works hard to raise awareness, always with a smile on her face, and as editor of the Asian MS newsletter she has played an invaluable role in increasing communication between the Asian MS Committee and its members, as well as with the Asian community and wider MS community as a whole.” The MS Society Awards, this year sponsored by Next, will take place on Thursday 17th October and were created to reward individuals and groups for their hard work in improving the lives of people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS).

Canada to honour courageous Malala Pakistani teenage activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban after campaigning for girls' education, will be granted honorary Canadian citizenship. The Canadian government announced the decision on Wednesday 16th October as the 16year-old joins an elite group of foreign honorees who include South Africa's Nelson Mandela and Myanmar's
Aung San Suu Kyi. In a statement released by the Canadian government, Malala was praised for her courage to speak up. It read: “Canada recognizes the courageous and inspiring example set by Malala Yousafzai in risking her life promoting education for young women. “She faced down evil and oppression and now speaks boldly for those who are silenced.”
After receiving death threats from the Taliban for defying the Islamist militant group with her outspoken views on the right to education, Malala was shot in the head a year ago while on a school bus near her village in Swat in northwestern Pakistan. She is now an avid spokesperson on educational rights and travels the world to speak on the matter.

Greater Manchester Police appeals for respect during festivities of Eid-ul-Adha
Police in Manchester are appealing for respect from visitors to the city during the Muslim religious holiday of Eid-ul-Adha. During this time there will be an influx of visitors to Rusholme’s famous ‘Curry Mile’ and officers will patrol the area to offer reassurance. Parking in the area will be suspended between 9pm and 6am on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 October. Inspector Dave Nutsey from Greater Manchester Police said: “Our officers will play their part to ensure the communities and those visiting are kept safe and that there is minimal traffic disruption to the area. “I would like to remind people coming to the city that any form of crime, antisocial behaviour and public disorder will not be tolerated and that we will take robust action against those participating in such actions. “Eid is a joyous occasion and an important date in the Muslim calendar and celebrations should reflect this. Anyone wishing to bring or cause problems is asked to stay away. “The Force has been working with the support of the Rusholme Business Association, the Council of Mosques and Manchester City Council to ensure safe and trouble-free celebrations. We have also been working with our colleagues in neighbouring forces to ensure that those travelling into the city from other areas do so for the right reasons so that everyone can enjoy the festivities. “Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Muslim community ‘Eid Mubarak’ and those visitors coming to Manchester will be given a warm welcome.” The restaurants of Rusholme’s ‘Curry Mile’ will remain open during Eid. Car parks are located behind the Shere Khan restaurant (off Walmer Street), on Thurloe Street and Hathersage Road. If any members of the community would like to discuss any issues in relation to Eid, either before during or after the event, please call the Longsight Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 4223 or email longsight@gmp.police.uk.
End to foreign language support for driving tests
From April next year driving test candidates will no longer be able to use foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on test. The move, announced today by Road Safety Minister Robert Goodwill, follows a public consultation. Currently people whose first language is not English or Welsh can request prerecorded voiceovers for the computerbased car and motorcycle theory tests in 19 different foreign languages. Candidates can also use approved interpreters on theory tests and practical tests. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “We want to make sure that all drivers have the right skills to use our roads safely and responsibly. One area where we can help ensure this is by requiring all test candidates to take the test in English or Welsh, the national languages. “This will help to ensure that all new drivers will be able to understand traffic updates or emergency information when they pass their test. It will also help us to reduce the risk of fraud by stopping interpreters from indicating the correct answers to theory test questions.” The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) consulted earlier this year on a series of proposals reviewing the level of foreign language support available to candidates. This was in response to concerns about potential road safety implications and the risk of fraud, as well as the cost of providing translations. The response to the consultation was positive with more than 70% of respondents supporting the withdrawal of foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on tests. The consultation received close to 2000 responses.

Unity of Faiths Festival
UNITED: Leaders from a host of religious and cultural backgrounds came together
FLAME: A Torch of Unity procession involved more than 100 young adults
More than 25,000 partake in London celebration By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Leaders from the world of sport, politics and religion came together last week to mark the third annual Unity of Faiths Festival in London. Organised by The Unity of Faiths Foundation (TUFF), individuals from all backgrounds were present to recognise the importance of inter-community dialogue and acceptance as the bedrock of community cohesion and understanding. In attendance were an array of dignitaries and public figures, including: the equivalent of the Sikh Pope who was in Britain for his first public visit, Akal Takht Jathedaar ji. A unique ‘Torch of Unity’ procession began on the 27th September, featuring 100 young adults from London schools, travelling on open-top Unity buses through Southall. During the lighting of the ‘Torch of Unity’, Dr Sheik Ramzy, Chair of the Muslim Council of Britain,
acknowledged the event for its originality. He said: “This is a unique and special organisation to bring every culture together all over the world. Let’s be united forever.” The former Grand Mufti of Palestine, Sheikh Abdel Salam Mraish, added: “Everybody must be true to each other. I am proud to be with such a young group of people who are embracing unity of faiths.” Following the torch ceremony, audiences were captivated by a series of keynote addresses by several VIPs who had flown to London especially for the launch. Dr. Shamender Talwar said: “Unity of Faiths is a journey we all need to be a part of. During the first festival three years ago we were surprised how positive the reaction was from the general public. “We had postmen, fireman, lawyers and doctors all turn up and celebrate unity in the community. Six weeks later the London riots began and Southall, which was one of the areas considered to be hit hardest was not affected.
“The festival grew from 8,000 to 25,000 which is testament to the fact that communities endorse the principles of TUFF.” The landmark event concluded with the third annual Unity of Faith Festival two days later with tens of thousands present. The festival provided London's multi-cultural community from all backgrounds and age groups, an opportunity to connect, break the barriers of misunderstanding and prejudice against a backdrop of free entertainment, food, drinks and social engagement. The festival built up a groundswell of support to the message of ‘unity’. Sports icon and England bowler, Monty Panesar, joined hands with the unity team, interacting with groups of people who had congregated to see the cricketer. Commenting on the atmosphere at the Festival, Panesar said: “Thank you for your positive energy and kind words. I hope to inspire the youth of the next generation”

‘Dysfunctional’
Muslim free school slammed by Ofsted
WARNING: PM David Cameron urged the school to take immediate action or face closure
Just one year after opening, a Muslim free school has been labeled ‘dysfunctional’ by Ofsted inspectors and rated inadequate in every category. The Al-Madinah school, in Derby, was temporarily closed earlier this month following its inspection and the official Ofsted report, which has now been released, continues to question the standard of the institution. The Ofsted inspection had been due to take place by the end of the calendar year but was prioritised following allegations that female teachers were obliged to wear hijabs and boys and girls were segregated. Since the report, the school has written to all pupils and staff telling them there is no requirement to

India and Pakistan house 54 per cent of the world’s population of enslaved people
Slavery: A hidden crime Musharraf denies he ordered Lal Masjid operation
Former president retied Gen Pervez Musharraf has again denied having ordered the Lal Masjid operation and says it was carried out on the directive of the capital administration at that time. A three-member joint investigation team (JIT), whose two members had earlier refused to be part of it, interrogated on Monday the former military ruler at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse which has been declared a sub-jail. According to sources privy to the investigation, Gen Musharraf was interrogated in connection with a double-murder case registered by Aabpara police on a complaint of Haroon Rasheed, son of Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, deputy Khateeb of Lal Masjid, who was killed in the 2007 operation at the mosque. Mr Haroon has alleged that Gen Musharraf issued the order for the operation in which his father and grandmother Sabiha Khatoon were killed. The former president told the JIT that the operation had been ordered by the then elected government and he had nothing to do with it. The sources quoted him as saying: “I was wrongly implicated. I did not issue any written order regarding the operation.”
Abdul Rasheed Ghazi. A police officer said it was yet to be established whether the woman had been killed. He said the police record submitted to the Supreme Court in 2007 showed that no woman had been killed in the operation. He claimed that police had checked the record of autopsies and DNA tests available with the city administration, but found no mention of the woman. Of the 88 bodies, he said, 14 were charred and beyond recognition because of the use of phosphorus bomb. All were male. Over 16 million or half the world’s population of modern day slaves live in India and Pakistan, according to the inaugural Global Slavery Index published this week. An estimated 30 million people worldwide are living in modern-day slavery, of which 2.1 million are in Pakistan and a staggering 14 million are based in India. The report by the Walk Free Foundation ranks 162 countries on ‘modern slavery’ by using reports from governments and non-profit organisations as well as statistical estimates. The Walk Free Foundation’s definition of modern slavery includes slavery itself, as well as human trafficking and forced labour, and slavery-like practices such as debt bondage, forced marriage, and sale or exploitation of children. According to the index, India has the highest total number of enslaved people in the world, between 13.2 million to 14.6 million, followed by China with 2.9 million enslaved people, and Pakistan with 2.1 million enslaved people. According to estimates by the WFF report, over 1.2 per cent of the Pakistani population is enforced into in some form of slavery. In India, this percentage rests somewhere around 1.13 per cent, while in China it is about 0.22 per cent. Combined, both India and Pakistan house 54 per cent of the world’s population of enslaved people. The index also ranks countries on a slavery prevalence rating based on factors including ratio to country population. Mauritania and Haiti rank among the countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery. An estimated 4 per
cent of West African nation Mauritania’s population is living in some form of slavery. Pakistan and India follow the list, ranked third and fourth respectively on prevalence of slavery. Taken together, countries with the highest numbers of enslaved people – India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Bangladesh – account for 76 per cent of the total estimate of 30 million in modern slavery today. The Walk Free Foundation is a Perth-based anti-slavery charity founded by Australian tycoon Andrew Forrest. The index has been endorsed by popular leaders including US Secretary Hillary Clinton, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, current Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and philanthropists Richard Branson and Bill Gates. The charity hopes the annual index will help governments monitor and tackle what it calls a “hidden crime.” Nick Grono of WFF explained how many people assume it ended when the Atlantic slave trade was abolished in the 1800s: “A lot of people are very surprised to hear that slavery still exists. “What modern slavery is - is a situation that reflects all of the characteristics of slavery of past centuries. People are controlled by violence. They are tricked or they are forced into jobs or situations where they are economically exploited. They live on no pay or base subsistence pay and they’re not free to leave. “I think once we start pointing out the scale of the problem on a country by country basis, policy makers will react.”

Hundreds of millions of emails, messages monitored by US The US National Security Agency has monitored hundreds of millions of email and instant messaging accounts around the world, reported by American Washington Post newspaper this week. The NSA’s monitoring systems focus on data crucial to government security in the United States and in allied nations, the report added. The Post based its report on information it received from senior intelligence officials and on top secret documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The agency also monitors “tens of millions” of US citizens although privacy laws prevent the US government from spying on its own citizens, the report claimed. The majority of the contacts come from Yahoo and Hotmail accounts, but others also come from Facebook, Google and unspecified other providers. The contacts amount to a sizeable portion of the world’s email and instant messaging accounts. “You need the haystack to find the needle,” NSA Director Gen. Keith B. Alexander told the Post while defending his agency’s massive monitoring programme. The Post quoted senior US intelligence officials as saying that such collection would be illegal if done from facilities in the United States. The NSA, however, has avoided that error by intercepting contact lists from points “all over the world”, one anonymous official told the newspaper. Large technology companies use data centres around the world to ease the loads on their servers in the United States. But all major service providers — Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo — told US media outlets that they were neither aware of nor had participated in any mass collection of user data by the US government. The American Civil Liberties Union called the programme a breach of Americans’ basic rights. The programme intercepts email address books and “buddy lists” from instant messaging services as they move across global data links. It gathers contact lists in large numbers and analyses data to search for hidden connections and to map relationships. During a single day last year, the NSA’s
Report was based on information it received from senior intelligence officials and on top secret documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden
Special Source Operations branch collected 444,743 email address books from Yahoo, 105,068 from Hotmail, 82,857 from Facebook, 33,697 from Gmail and 22,881 from unspecified other providers. Those figures, described as a typical daily intake in the document, correspond to a rate of more than 250 million a year. Each day the agency collects contacts from an estimated 500,000 buddy lists on live-chat services as well as from the inbox displays of Web-based email accounts. Foreign telecommunications companies and allied intelligence services cooperate with the NSA in collecting this data. Contact lists stored online provide the NSA with far richer sources of data than call records alone. Address books commonly include not only names and email addresses, but also telephone numbers, street addresses, and business and family information. Inbox listings of email accounts stored in the “cloud” sometimes contain content, such as the first few lines of a message. Taken together, the data can be used to draw detailed maps of a person’s life, as told by personal, professional, political and religious connections. The NSA has not been authorised by Congress or the special intelligence court that oversees foreign surveillance to collect contact lists in bulk. Because of the method employed, the agency is not legally required or technically able to restrict its intake to contact lists belonging to specified foreign intelligence targets.
Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’
A Malaysian appeals court on Monday upheld a government ban against the use of the word ''Allah'' to refer to God in non-Muslim faiths, overruling claims by Christians in this Muslimmajority nation that the restriction violates their religious rights. ''Allah'' is the Arabic word for God and is commonly used in the Malay language to refer to God. But the Malaysian government insists that ''Allah'' should be exclusively reserved for Muslims because of concerns its use by others would confuse Muslims and could be used to convert them. Malaysia's Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities have often complained that the government infringes in their constitutional right to practice religion freely, accusations the government denies.
Monday's judgment in the Court of Appeals overturns a decision by a lower court nearly four years ago that ruled against the government ban. Anger over that ruling sparked a string of arson attacks and vandalism at Malaysian churches and other places of worship. The legal dispute stems from efforts by the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia to use ''Allah'' in its Malay-language weekly publication. Roman Catholic representatives deny there are attempts to convert Muslims and say the government ban is unreasonable because Christians who speak the Malay language had long used ''Allah'' in their Bibles, literature and songs before authorities sought to enforce the curb in recent years. Judge Mohamed Apandi
Ali, who led a three-member appeals court panel, said the use of ''Allah'' was ''not an integral part of the faith and practice of Christianity.'' ''It is our judgment that there is no infringement of any constitutional rights'' in the ban, he said. ''We could find no reason why the (Catholic newspaper) is so adamant to use the word 'Allah' in their weekly. Such usage if allowed will inevitably cause confusion within the community.'' The Rev. Lawrence Andrew, editor of the Catholic newspaper, The Herald, said they plan to appeal Monday's verdict in Malaysia's Federal Court, the nation's highest. ''We are greatly disappointed and dismayed,'' he said. ''This is unrealistic. It is a retrograde step in the development of law in relation to the fundamental liberty of religious minorities.''

Pakistani Taliban prepared to meet with government In a rare interview, Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud has told the BBC that the extremist group are open to ‘serious talks’ with the government. The decision comes after Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister in May this year and announced he was willing to open ‘unconditional talks’. Mehsud controls more than 30 militant groups in tribal areas and has seen thousands of people killed since taking over as chief of the country’s Taliban in 2009. In his time as leader, he has masterminded the campaign against Nato convoys in Khyber tribal region and Peshawar, emerged as a prominent fighter after reputedly leading a raid that captured 300 soldiers, and has a $5million FBI bounty on his head. Speaking to the BBC, Mehsud said: “We believe in serious talks but the government has taken no steps to approach us. The government needs to sit with us, and then we will present our conditions. “The proper way to do it is that if the government appoints a formal team, and
they sit with us, and we discuss our respective positions.” When pressed on why previous peace initiatives had failed, Mehsud blamed the government. He said: “The government of Pakistan bombs innocent tribal people due to the pressure of America... Drone strikes conducted by Americans were [backed] by Pakistan. Then the Americans pressed Pakistan to start ground operations in these areas, and Pakistan complied. “So the government is responsible for past failures.” Reports had also suggested the Taliban chief was responsible for recent attacks in public places, yet he was quick to deny the claims, adding: “We consider the safety of Muslims, of scholars, of mosques and madrassas as our sacred duty. “As for explosions which cause damage to the life and property of Muslims, we have denied any link in the past, we deny any link today. “We have targeted those who are with the infidels, America, and we will continue to target them.”

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS OPEN: The US Government finally reopened after 16 days
Back in Business
America reopens after two weeks of negotiations 16 days after the US government all but shutdown, and just hours before the country risked running out of money to pay its bills, the government has been reopened. The partial closure began on the 2nd October after Congress failed to agree on a budget leaving more than 800,000 employees of the federal workforce off work with no pay. Now, following a revised debt limit, Barack Obama has signed a law which
will fund the government up until the 15th January, whilst extending the Treasury's borrowing authority until 7th February. Congress voted through the deal less than a day before a deadline to raise the $16.7tn (£10.5tn) debt limit. However, despite resolving the issue, the law will only be a temporary solution. The deal threatens to only further divide Republicans and Democrats by establishing a cross-party committee of
legislators tasked with crafting a longterm budget deal over the coming months. According to estimates from leading economists, the US economy is believed to have lost in excess of several billion dollars. The shutdown affected Americans and visitors to the US in countless ways: most national parks were closed, medical research ground to a halt, and ordinary paperwork went unfinished, delaying visa applications, business permits and safety inspections. Speaking after the Senate had passed the bill on Wednesday evening, President Barack Obama stressed the importance of lawmakers ‘[earning] back the trust of the American people’. “We’ve got to get out of the habit of governing by crisis,” he added. Despite the bill being approved late on Wednesday (17th October), there was still a majority of Republicans who voted against the limit extension. Among those who opposed the decision was chairman of the House Budget Committee, Paul Ryan, labelling the law a ‘missed opportunity’. “Today's legislation won’t help us reduce our fast-growing debt,” he said. “In my judgement, this isn’t a breakthrough. We’re just kicking the can down the road.” Speaking to the BBC, Republican Senator John McCain said he was “very relieved” that ‘standoff’ had finally ended. “I'm guardedly optimistic and confident that we won't revisit it this way again,” he said. “The reaction of the American people is very, very negative, and understandably so.”
Microphone bomb kills Afghan governor A bomb hidden in a microphone killed an Afghan provincial governor on Tuesday as he made a speech at a mosque after Eid prayers in Logar, close to the capital Kabul. Arsala Jamal was appointed by President Hamid Karzai, like all 34 provincial governors, and he was seen as a close ally of the president, acting as one of his campaign managers in the 2009 election. “This morning, Governor Jamal was delivering a speech after Eid prayers when he was killed by a bomb planted in the microphone,” Logar provincial governor spokesman Din Mohammad Darwish said. “The governor wanted to speak and congratulate everyone on the occasion of Eid. At least 18 other people have been wounded, including civilians and government employees.” Jamal only took up the Logar job in April after serving as governor of Khost, on the border with Pakistan. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, though Taliban militants often target provincial government officials as well as Afghan soldiers and police. Karzai condemned Jamal’s killing, saying the attack inside the mosque showed the Taliban had no respect for Islam.
Earlier in his presidential Eid address on Tuesday, he again appealed for peace. “Hamid Karzai called on the Taliban to work for the development of their country, and to spare Afghan security forces who are working to protect their soil, national dignity, and to stop carrying out attacks,” his office said. “(The president) once again called on the Taliban and their leaders not to throw the youth of this country into destruction.” Mohammad Jan Abid, head of the criminal investigative department in Logar, confirmed the mosque bombing and said a probe would be launched. Volatile Logar, which lies to the south of the Afghan capital, is seen as a key strategic region, often described as a “gateway to Kabul” for Taliban militants based in strongholds across the south and east. Security in the province has deteriorated in recent years, with the Taliban holding sway in some areas despite sustained Afghan and US military pressure. Village-based Afghan Local Police (ALP) forces have also been active trying to wrestle back control of Taliban-held territory. The Taliban have vowed to step up attacks as Afghanistan prepares for presidential elections in April and the withdrawal of 87,000 Nato troops by the end of next year.

‘PAKISTAN’S BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB’, SACHAL JAZZ, RETURNS TO FOLLOW-UP LAST YEAR’S NUMBER ONE HIT
After topping the world music charts and playing alongside Wynton Marsallis at the Marcaic Jazz Festival in front of an audience of more than 10,000 people, the Sachal Studios Orchestra is back with ‘Jazz and All That’ released on 18th November – an album of their unique interpretations of jazz and beyond. Performed by virtuosos who cut their teeth in Pakistan’s once-flourishing Lollywood film industry, ‘Jazz and All That’ brings together the most accomplished classical musicians of the subcontinent to play jazz classics– with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. As the Evening Standard said after their sold-out performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall last year, it “ought to be wrong but sounds so right”. ‘Jazz and All That’ follows the success of their first album ‘Interpretations of Jazz Standards and Bossa Nova’, released last year, which included their famous take on Bruebeck’s Take Five. The
Single held the top spot on the iTunes world music chart in the US and UK from July to September last year, and the video became an unexpected YouTube sensation. The Sachal Jazz project is the brainchild of Londonbased Pakistani businessman Izzat Majeed. He tracked down the best musicians of Lollywood’s heyday, once revered but now hanging up their instruments in a more conservative Pakistan, and got them into the studio once again. Majeed has overcome threats, dismal recording facilities and disheartened musicians, using jazz to breathe new life into Pakistan’s classical music scene. He’s taken the musicians out of obscurity to be heard across the globe, prompting comparisons with the Buena Vista Social Club. ‘Jazz and All That’ showcases the best of East meets West. It includes jazz standards that can’t fail to delight – try and listen to the Sachal Studios Orchestra’s rendition of The Pink Panther
Theme without smiling – but there are some unexpected pleasures there too, including tracks by Stevie Wonder (You’ve Got it Bad Girl), The Beatles (Eleanor Rigby) and REM (Everybody Hurts). The video of their interpretation of Everybody Hurts is already clocking up views on YouTube. The release is part of the most exciting year in Sachal Studios’ history. November will see The Sachal Studios Ensemble performing again with the great Wynton Marsalis, over two nights at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln centre. By reimagining some of the best-loved songs of the West, the Sachal Jazz project is keeping Pakistan’s traditional music, musicians and instruments alive. This is Majeed’s labour of love, but he takes its success in his stride. “I’m not a crusader,” he says, “I just want to listen to music that really shakes my soul and feels like great fun. That’s the reason I do this. And hopefully, other people will like it too.”

Canadian singer-songwriter returns with his eagerly anticipated new release ‘Woohoo’
Raghav has once again teamed up with American hit maker Jim Beanz, a collaboration which has been hugely successful given that his last single ‘Fire’ spent over 20 weeks in Canada’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, generating sales which achieved Gold certification as well as a nomination for “Single Of The Year” at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. Jim Beanz is known for his work with US super producer Timbaland, earning writing and production credits with some of the world’s biggest pop stars such as Rihanna, Shakira and Demi Lovato. Raghav’s latest release ‘Woohoo’ is an instantly catchy pop record which is set to become another club and radio hit to add to his most recent chart success. On his latest single, Raghav says: “It’s a fun song, something to get your feet tapping and keep you singing along. It’s been great working with Jim Beanz, we’ve created a lot of magic in the studio over the last few months and there’s definitely a strong creative chemistry with him. ‘Fire’ was a huge hit for us in the Canadian market and now we’re looking to repeat it with ‘Woohoo’ in Canada and across other territories. I hope you all enjoy it and watch out for even more music coming real soon.” Raghav has had a busy 2013, having been commissioned to work on the music for a Dreamworks motion
picture with Oscar and Grammy winning composer AR Rahman. Raghav first collaborated with Rahman last year on Shahrukh Khan’s hit movie soundtrack for ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The song ‘Ishq Shava’, written and sung by Raghav, was one of the stand out tracks from the album and has amassed over 15
million YouTube views. Raghav adds: “Working with AR Rahman has been an awesome experience. We’re currently recording for a Hollywood and a Bollywood project so it’s enabled me to showcase music through a different platform. After the great success of ‘Ishq Shava’ last year I’m looking forward
to releasing more film material. Working on soundtracks offers it’s own challenges but I’m enjoying it and it’s keeping me very busy at the moment.” Raghav remains one of the most successful South Asian pop stars on the planet, having sold millions of albums and singles worldwide. Songs

Mallika Sherawat complains that film directors don’t think she can handle serious roles
36-year-old Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat rues that directors do not take her seriously because of her glamorous image. She says that the saucy characters she has played over the years have given her fame, success and liberation, but she claims that at the same time this image has worked against her. Mallika has said that she’s bored with the ‘sexy siren roles’ that continue to get pushed her way from movie bosses. The actress is dismayed at being “stereotyped” and says that she’s never been given a challenging role in the movies at all. Mallika even showed interest in jumping at the chance to play the part of a supporting role, but one which would test her acting skills. She commented: "I don't just want to look pretty in films, do songs, have two-three dialogues... I am looking forward to doing interesting and challenging roles.” The actress feels there's a dearth of roles for actresses, even though Indian cinema is changing, and said: “Very few Bollywood films have meaty roles for actresses. Films like 'The Dirty Picture', 'Kahaani' come once or twice a year. Majority of films are commercial masala where heroines have (to be content with) glamorous roles, singing songs."
BREAKOUT
Blitz-i ready to release his album after success of ‘Oh Meri Nina’ and ‘Girl Like That’
After the phenomenal response from the debut single ‘Oh Meri Nina’ last year, Blitzi, speaks to Asian Express about the muchanticipated release his debut album, ‘Breakout’. Having sold his much-prized car to finance his first single ‘Oh Meri Nina’, the track brought huge interest not only nationally but also internationally, with the single reaching number eight on the iTunes world charts. It was quite a shock to him and the team that the single had done well especially since it was his first release, it looked like the hard work and dedication paid off. Blitz-i was greatly humbled by what he had achieved in such a short amount of time. This work ethic has seen Blitz-i and his assembled team set up the label ‘Superkick Records’. Enabling him to create a firm foundation upon which to build from. This foundation has allowed Blitz-i to continue perfecting the sound of the album ‘Breakout’. Before the album is released he put his skills back into test with a new single called
‘Girl Like That’, which features a new talented artist known as Kami Kane. ‘Girl Like That’ again shocked the team with its top 10 reach on both Itunes and Official BBC Asian Download Charts. Blitz-i said: “Firstly I’d like to thank everyone who supported me with the last two singles, especially my fans who have been instrumental in my achievements to date, I’d also like to thank all the media outlets, radio stations, TV stations, the team at ‘Superkick Records’ and everybody else that has supported me. I thank you all gratefully and lets do this again...” “I can’t stress how important fans are to supporting not only me but all artists by buying the music, I hope you guys will support my new single and buy legally from iTunes so we can bring you more. Keep following as we’re working on big projects coming soon. Love to all”

FROM SOLIHULL
TO MUMBAI Mumbai, 14th October 2013: Three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes have completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days from Solihull, UK, to Mumbai, India. It is the world’s first ever hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail and one of the boldest driving adventures ever pursued by Land Rover. Hostile conditions on the route included asphalt roads riddled with vast and deep potholes, dusty desert trails in 43°C heat and numerous miles of mud and gravel tracks and cattle trails. In addition, river crossings, passes clinging to the edges of mountains partly blocked by rock falls, the thin air of extremely high altitudes and the dense and erratic traffic of Chinese and Indian roads all added to the test of man and machine. The Silk Trail 2013 expedition was the final validation test for the Range Rover Hybrid before it is signed-off for production. From the home of the Legend in Solihull, UK, it blazed a trail through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (including Tibet), Nepal and India. For much of this distance the expedition followed the legendary Silk Road trading routes that first connected Asia with Europe more than 2,500 years ago. Overnight halts were made in hotels, hostels and tents at many of the same staging posts visited all those years ago by Silk Road merchants, missionaries and mercenaries. Where the north and south Silk Roads split, near the remote city of Kashgar in north-western China, the expedition pioneered a mountainous route never previously completed by a vehicle from outside the country and never previously seen in its entirety by any westerner – the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, which put the new Range Rover Hybrid through its paces at heights of over 5,300 metres above sea level. Seven consecutive days were spent at altitudes between 11,000 and 17,648 feet (3,350 and 5,379 metres). At such great heights, oxygen content in the air is reduced from the 21 percent found at sealevel to as little as 10 percent, making movement more difficult for humans and internal combustion engines. The Range Rover convoy
Land Rover completes world’s first hybrid expedition along Silk Trail continued to make good progress, benefiting from the electric motor’s instant torque at 0 rpm and despite being laden with heavy loads including luggage, camping gear, food, medical equipment, and aerodynamically-unfriendly roofracks carrying spare wheels, tyres and jerry cans of fuel. Negotiating tracks so sticky with mud that they were impassable to other types of vehicle, the Range Rover’s hybrid engine combination – with a 35kW electric motor supporting the TDV6 3.0 litre turbodiesel engine – returned excellent fuel consumption for a vehicle so
spacious and powerful. Throughout the epic journey the Range Rover Hybrids typically returned 36 to 37 mpg. Land Rover development engineers closely monitored data loggers fitted to each car, sending back more than 300 gigabytes of detailed technical records to their engineering team at Gaydon in the UK. The purpose of the expedition was not to test the reliability of mechanical components, which are already proven, but to fine-tune the calibration of engine and transmission software to ensure perfectly seamless performance in
all terrains and extreme temperatures and altitudes. Technical setbacks reflected the roughness of the road surfaces: 15 punctures among the expedition’s three Range Rover Hybrids and four support vehicles, four wheels damaged by deep potholes, and four windscreens cracked by stones thrown-up on loose surfaces. Peter Richings, Jaguar Land Rover Hybrids and Electrification Director who took part in the final leg from Jaipur to Mumbai commented: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route
across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle – but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride. “In developing the hybridpowered Range Rover, our objective was to gain hybrid’s fuel economy and carbon emissions advantages without compromising the Range Rover’s go-anywhere capabilities, its cabin space or its refinement. The success of this remarkable expedition clearly demonstrates we have achieved that.”

DEBUT: Jaguars’ C-X75 will be showcased in Birmingham next month
Jaguar to debut state-ofthe-art C-X75 prototype
supercar The Jaguar C-X75, the prototype state-of-art hybrid supercar, will make its Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show debut, as the centrepiece of the Jaguar Classic Parts stand. Held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, the stand, in collaboration with Jaguar Heritage, will boast an impressive selection of classic and modern Jaguars. Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 concept, which has been provided by Jaguar Cars, in 2010 and has marked the beginning of a new chapter in innovation and technological advancement. The C-X75 can achieve 100mph from standstill in less than six seconds and can continue on to a top speed of 220mph. Considering these impressive
performance statistics, the C-X75 is capable of producing less than 89g of CO2/pkm and will even run with zero emissions for up to 60km. Jaguar Classic Parts welcome visitors to come to their stand in Hall 20 to see this “groundbraking” hybrid vehicle. This year’s stand also includes some historical vehicles from the Jaguar Heritage collection. The cars on display will include: XK120, E-Type, XJ40, XJS, X300, XKR and XFR Rocketsports, all outstanding Jaguars from different eras. A further highlight to this years’ stand in Hall 20 will be a wide range of genuine parts available on display. Jaguar Classic Parts are clearly stating that its commitment to the preservation of classic Jaguar cars has never been
stronger. Jaguar Classic Parts will be providing a limited number of vouchers enabling Jaguar owners to receive a discount on their next order. Jaguar Classic Parts technical advisers will be on hand to answer parts queries and give expert advice. The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, is the UK’s biggest classic motoring celebration. Spanning eleven halls, visitors can enjoy an estimated 1,500 cars and 350 motorcycles on display, ranging from the rare and exciting to pre-war and retro classics, the sublime to the ridiculous, and many more.

RECORD-BREAKER: Sachin Tendulkar
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Sachin Tendulkar, arguably cricket’s greatest ever batsman, is set to retire next month after a record-breaking 24 year career. The Indian sportsman will call an end to his illustrious time at the crease after a two-test home series against West Indies which will take the Little Master’s Test record to 200 games. With every record worth holding already in the sporting icons pocket, he will leave the game knowing that very few people will ever come close to matching his statistics. Not only is he the leading runscorer in the history of Tests, with
15,837 runs in his 198 matches, but he also boasts the most runs in the history of one-day internationals, with 18,426 runs in an amazing 463 ODIs. Blessed with the keenest of cricket minds, Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989, aged just 16, in a Test with Pakistan. Just one year later, in his 14th innings, he registered his first Test century against England at Old Trafford. Some of his finest and most memorable performances came Australia, the against overwhelmingly dominant team of his era. His
Sport
century as a 19-year-old on a lightning-fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in the cricket-mad country. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman: Don Bradman (holder of the highest batting average ever at 99.94 runs) who confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself. In 2000 he became the first to register 50 batsman

international hundreds and eight years later in 2008 he passed Brian Lara as the leading Test run-score. Most recently, last year, when just one month short of his 39th birthday, Tendulkar became the first player to score 100 international centuries which, like Bradman's batting average, could be a mark that lasts forever. Speaking about his career, the cricketing ace explained that it all seems like a ‘dream’. “It's hard to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I've ever done since I was 11,” he said. “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years.” President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, N Srinivasan, added: “He is without doubt the greatest cricketer India has produced. “In fact, one should really say he ranks among the top of alltime great sportspersons in the world. No one has served Indian cricket as Sachin has. “He has truly been an ambassador for India and Indian cricket. He has been an inspiration for generations of sportsmen, not just cricketers. “We respect his decision to retire, although many of us can't imagine an Indian team without Sachin.”
Tendulkar holds just about every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most runs and hundreds in Tests and ODIs, as well as most international runs. Test Matches Played: 198 Runs: 15,837 Centuries: 51 Half-centuries: 67 Average: 53.86

Pivotal points Khan returns for November slip away showdown
BACK PAGE STORY
Bolton prospect looks to continue unbeaten start
ZERO: Paul Di Resta was unfortunate not to take any points from Suzuka
Force India’s poor run of form continued last week as they failed to pick up any points at the Suzuka Grand Prix. The blank score means the Formula One side have only managed three points in their last seven races. One key factor which seems to be hampering the side is the forced tyre change. Pirelli changed the construction of its tyres from the German Grand Prix onwards in the wake of the tyre blowouts at Silverstone, and since then Force India have struggled to make any progress on the track.
CAPTAIN: Steven Gerrard netted the second in a convincing 2-0 win
At one stage fifth in the constructors' championship beckoned, but the team have slipped to sixth behind McLaren, and are now coming under threat from Sauber. Paul Di Resta was unlucky to come away from Japan with no points after an 11th position finish. Speaking after the race, the Brit said: “At the start of the race I didn’t get a good launch and a few cars came by me, and then we lost out at the first pit stop because the Williams of Bottas jumped us. “That compromised the
second stint, which is why we went very aggressive with an early second stop to get track position and move ahead of the Williams. “The car felt better for the final stint and it looked like we were on course for a point. In the end we were about five laps too short with the tyre life because I couldn’t defend from Jenson [Button]. “With four races to go we need to take the positives from this weekend and will travel to India determined to get back in the points.”
Undefeated Jack Arnfield of Blackpool tops the bill when he goes up against veteran Max Maxwell in what is sure to be one of the fights of the night, leading a fantastic card, featuring some of the country’s hottest young prospects. Yet it is the younger brother of former unified light-welterweight world champion, Amir Khan, who is expected to put on a performance following his stunning knockout of Medellin last May in Atlantic City. The super-flyweight’s opponent will be named in due course. Ahead of the fight, the 22-year-old Commonwealth Bronze medallist said he was excited to get back inside the ring. “Over the past few months I’ve been training hard with Oliver Harrison and I’ve done some great work and had excellent sparring,” he said.
“This will only be my third fight as a professional but I feel myself growing and getting stronger. There are no shortcuts in this sport so I will be getting in tiptop shape in order to put on a great performance. I would like to thank Steve Woods for putting me on this great show.” Steve Woods of VIP Boxing Promotions, added: “It’s great to have Haroon fighting on the card and we expect there will be a large contingent from Bolton making their way across to Blackpool next month. This card will have it all from top to bottom and it will be a great night of boxing.” Fight fans can buy tickets, starting at just £30 or £60 ringside, by contacting Saj Mohamed on 01204 535332 or email, saj@premuk.com. The fight card will also be available online at www.vipboxing.tv with a scheduled start time of 7pm.
In front of a rare partisan crowd at Wembley, Roy Hodgson’s men finally booked their place at next year’s World Cup following a convincing 2-0 victory over Poland. Talisman Wayne Rooney bagged the opener five minutes before half time to give the Three Lions a deserved lead before Steven Gerrard’s late strike sealed the points. With 18,000 Polish supporters crammed into the national stadium, the game was always going to be a tough test for the hosts and for the first 15 minutes, it really was. Borussia Dortmund ace, Robert Lewandowski, came close to opening the scoring after beating the English defence only to slip the ball wide of Joe Hart’s goal, whilst club-mate Jakub Błaszczykowski threatened to split open the defence with a number of ‘nearly passes’. As play continued England began to get a foothold in the game and it was the everimpressive Andros Townsend who first tested Arsenal shot-

After succumbing to TON: Virat Kohli became India’s Australia’s pace in the first fastest ever centurion in ODIs ODI, India hit back in the second with a record breaking innings to level the score at 1-1. Chasing a very credible 359, the hosts surged to their target with 39 balls to spare to win by nine wickets, and in turn record the second highest ever run chase in One Day International history. Virat Kohli starred with the bat as he became India’s fastest ever centurion in ODIs after hitting a ton off just 52 deliveries – a feat including eight fours and seven sixes. Rohit Sharma hit the winning runs to finish the day on 141 not out, whilst fellow opener, Shikhar Dhawan, was the only wicket Australia could manage as the batsmen was bowled just five runs shy of his century. “I just wanted to go out there and play my part,” Kohli explained. “I was hitting the ball sweetly. I decided to take the pressure and whatever I went for I got in the middle of the bat. “I’ve been feeling good mentally and I was fresh for this game. I was ready, and I knew if I held my shape I would connect well.” as far as talent is concerned,” said Kohli. Kohli also paid tribute to 26-year-old “Once he gets set and gets going it's Rohit Sharma, whose third one-day very difficult to stop him. He's got every century included four sixes and 17 fours. shot in the book and it was a delight to “Rohit is by far the best of the young lot watch from the other end.”
VICTOR: Last time out, Khan claimed victory in under a minute, defeating Vicente Medellin

stopper Wojciech Szczesny with an effort from distance. When the first goal did arrive it came from the likeliest of sources, Wayne Rooney. The forward’s 28th goal in competitive matches for his country ensured he moved clear at the top of most goals in the World Cup and European Championships for any England player.
A perfect delivery from the left wing was whipped in from manof-the-match Leighton Baines, as Rooney guided the ball into Szczesny’s goal. Poland came out stronger in the second half yet could only muster up half-chances, with Lewandowski again having the best chance, forcing Hart into a good save.
A late barrage had threatened from the visitors but when James Milner’s through ball found Gerrard, the England skipper sealed his 107th international with perhaps his most important goal to date. Hodgson’s men will now travel to Rio next summer where all eyes will be fixed on the biggest prize of them all.
