President’s Corner APJ Pres. Richard Tamayo JCI Manila 2021 President It was espoused by our charter president, the first national president of JCI Philippines, the first Asian President of Junior Chamber International, and one of the founding fathers of Philippine industry, the late Ramon V del Rosario Sr., that the heart of our chapter is leadership development through community service. JCI Manila continues to live true to this mantra. Despite that, this particular period has been extra challenging for all of us, considering the surge and lockdowns, the 2021 JCI Manila Board of Directors and our Community Development Directorate under the leadership of Dir. Jason Earl S. Oliva, soldiers on. Our Community Development Programs addresses Agriculture and Rural Development, Education, Economic Growth, Gender and Inclusion, Public Health, and Social Impact Management and bilaterally UN Sustainable Development Goals 1-5, 6, 8, 10 and 17. The main Community Development Programs under the Dare 2 Care (D2C) Umbrella are Hulma, Wash / 1Up, Golden

We expect to continue to roll out the rest of the sustainable and highimpact Community Development projects well within the year

Heart, Field of Dreams (FOD) / Pamana and Educate Dedicate Motivate (EDM). So far the following are the completed projects to date: Community Learning Hub, Celebrity Quiz Online, Gabay Aral, Bags to School, Ulan Sala Filtration System and Project Negosyo. While the on-going projects are Clef Palete (Operation Smile), Ngiti Manileño, Hulma 2: Online Livelihood for the Youth, Little Manileños, Field of Dreams (FOD) Futsal Training Facility and Digital Guardians. We expect to continue to roll out the rest of the sustainable and high-impact Community Development projects well within the year as safety and the IATF-EID guidelines permit it. Physical movement and quarantine protocols have admittedly been a constraint yet all these challenges are view as opportunities at still executing programs and projects in the new and better normal. Furthermore, the main strategy for all Community Affairs projects is to physically have local partners and sponsors safely work on the needs of the project while

plan the actual execution and program of the projects as swift and safe as possible. The safety of our members will always remain paramount. The goal of interoperability among division and directorates has also been a thrust this 2021. A good example is the rollout of our Vaccination program under LOM which also complements our COVID-19 response including 1UP (Health) and Wash (Hygiene) Program under Community Development. These joint and jive projects includes other Internal Affairs directorates such as with Membership Development and Business Development. Lastly, there is also an interplay among the External Affairs Directorates with Community Trainings, International and National sister chapters. We continue enjoined our members to support our Community Development Directorate as we continue to go safe and strong this year. Let us pursue to live true that Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life! Let us continue to Lead as One!

#LeadAsOne EDITOR’S NOTE The first quarter of 2021 remains to be difficult for all of us, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Yet somehow we are able to devote our hearts and find the resolve to rise above and bring relief to those who are in despair and are in great need. I recall the inspiring story of JCI Manila as its members, under the leadership of Artemio “Temiong” Vergel de Dios, helped rebuild a ravaged Manila which was in shambles after World War II and realize that it only takes a few resourceful and determined men to make a difference. It is timely that the fourth issue of Asian Pearl will feature the Community Development Directorate

and its core team led by Director Jason Earl Oliva. Get to know the men who have tirelessly continued to complete various projects addressing the challenges brought by the pandemic. May their stories not only fill you with hope, love and compassion but also encourage you to take part in their future projects during this time of crisis.

Gabay Aral is one of the answers to a direct threat to the future of our country.

PROJECT

GABAY ARAL by Alexander Go

JCI Raises P130,000 worth of school supplies for 6,000 5th and 6th graders in Pio del Pilar Elementary School through the GABAY ARAL Project. The Covid-19 pandemic put a temporary end to the traditional methods of teaching which has led to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) advice on using the online teaching method with the use of laptops, tablets, and any of the sort to lessen the chances of physical contact. However, the online teaching method should be supported with school supplies and other educational materials to make sure that the student would still get the optimum allowable education in their household. Therefore, JCI Manila embarked on the project Gabay Aral in order to raise funds to achieve this objective.

In the process of Gabay Aral, proper health protocols, particularly social distancing, were strictly observed during the handover of 6,000 notebooks and pens, 200 coloring book gift certificates, 1,000 bottles of glue - which amounted to P130,000. The day after, there also was an online interaction that was both informative and entertaining between JCI Manila members and the grade school students of Pio del Pilar Elementary School. The education of our children should be supported by every means possible to assure the success of the online teaching method. The temporary scrapping of the traditional modes of teaching, because of this pandemic, gives us only one option and this option is to adapt to the present situation.

PROJECT DIWA A Community Learning Hub by Atty. Danilo Rico III

THE MEN OF PROJECT DIWA

JCI promotes continuous learning, in spite of COVID-19 pandemic, by creating the first solar powered learning hub for the Pio del Pilar Elementary School. In the midst of a pandemic, the JCI Manila ComDev team launched Project Diwa: A Community Learning Hub, under the Lead As One program, to help 320 pupils continue their studies throughout the school year. By partnering with the Office of the Vice President and SunSmart Solar Technologies, this joint project supplements the learning process through the personal tutoring of small groups of students in safe spaces.

APJ 2021 SERIES • ISSUE 4

Headed by Jesus Antonio Sanchez (Project Chairman), Francisco Offemaria IV (Project Vice President) and Keon Kester Chioa (Project Committee) the project was a success as they raised P343,040.00 (both in kind and in cash) for the completion of five learning set-ups within the hub - which can accommodate five students with two tutors per session, having four sessions per day for four days in a week. Seeing as distance learning may be more difficult for some students and others may need academic assistance, setting up these learning hubs will can lead to a more sustainable strategy that can help futureproof the education systems, especially in the rural communities

1-UP PROJECT

ULAN SALA by Alexander Go

1-UP Project: Ulan Sala makes clean and drinkable water available for the residents of Brgy. Dela Paz, Binan, Laguna by donating and installing a rain water purifier in their community.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

This joint project between JCI Manila ComDev and the Barangay Officials of Dela Paz as well as the office of the Vice Mayor of Binan, Laguna, has sought to alleviate the issue of the inaccessibility of clean and drinking water during heavy rains in the area. Considering how this Brgy. Dela Paz has been a troubled flood-zone for a while now, with the use of the rain water purifier that was installed, more than the 40,000 residents will finally have access to drinkable water in the event of another intense rainfall. The project cost had a total of P512,000.00, of which P500,000 was from one unit of the rain water catcher and filter, P10,000 worth of face shields, P1,000 worth of face masks, and 5 units of hand washing materials that cost P1,000. Seeing as how the project was such a success and was so easy to initiate thanks to the collaboration with the respective local government unit, JCI plans to replicate this water filtration set-up for different urban and rural areas in Philippines that have a scarcity in drinkable and free water supply.

PROJECT

NEGOSYO by Jet Tatel

JCI Manila with JCI Ortigas and Greenfields, enables SNPP members, of Manila City, to create sustainable sources of income through a livelihood program called: Project Negosyo. Last March 18, 2021, this event was held in the Hulo Saniboy Covered Court where 17 beneficiaries were given the Pangkabuhayan Packages and trained on the proper business management know-hows in handling Boss Barbeque. The common saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” (from Matthew 4:19) in this case the JCI Manila team handed “fishing rods” or the capability and the skill set to continually provide for their families through setting up these small businesses - making these communities marginalized no more. It is because of initiatives like these, which leave a positive and more maintainable impact, that our kababayans get to have a better future for them and their community. In addition to the help that this brought to the community, this project also united two other chapters (JCI Ortigas and Greenfields) with JCI Manila through the planning and execution of Project Negosyo.

QUIZ BEE WITH THE STARS by Alexander Richmond Uy

JCI raised awareness on the difficulty of online learning by organizing a national Quiz bee that reached the STARS through Zoom

Our education system was greatly affected by the pandemic - pausing big events such as national competitions, school events and quiz bees. The students had to adjust to online learning and lessen social interactions - which is particularly beneficial for children and teenagers’ holistic development. Thinking of other ways to make online learning exciting, JCI Manila conceptualized the first ever Quiz Bee with the Stars last March 29, 2021. The project was in collaboration with key partners such as DepEd, Edukasyon.Ph, Kumu, Nestle PH, to name a few, and invited six public high schools to send their two representatives each to compete and win. This online event was held in Zoom and was

streamed for the public to view via Kumu PH and Facebook live, making available the sights of camaraderie and meaningful learning between students in spite of all the limitations dictated by health protocols. It was a refreshing break from the monotony of online learning as these students fought for first place with their star studded partners, Gab Valenciano, Justiene Ortega and Fourth Solomon. Through Quiz Bee with the Stars, JCI Manila made apparent the struggles students have to endure in order to continue their learning and more importantly, made it more fun and engaging despite being just at home.
