JCI Manila 2021 President

Our National Relations this year is as exciting as it always have been. We also come from a point where despite the surges and lockdowns, JCI Manila has been connecting and collaborating not only with our sister chapters but also with all other JCI LOs in the country. This year also sets the tone of a consistent and hopefully progressive direction in building meaningful and lasting relationships through collaboration with other LOs. Our collaboration projects also does not only include LOs but also regions, areas and the National Board Level. Notably we have Project Empower which aims to provide employment opportunities for our country in this difficult time. This project is through the DOLE and the POEA, which has started and is currently on going until the end of July. We have partnered with 30 JCIP Chapters with close to 5,000+ Applicants joining the Job Fair to date. Not to mention, there are hundreds of local & overseas employers with more than 30,000 Job Vacancies. This is initiative is also part of the JCI RISE (Rebuild-Invest-SustainEvolve). Another notable collaboration project is our Vaccine Awareness campaign called Project Bakuna (Para sayo at sa Kanila). This is project aims to encourage and educate our fellow Filipinos to get their COVID-19 vaccines especially those hesitant. Furthermore, we do have a lot of external collaboration projects as through our National Relations Directorate that is also an internal collaboration among directorates. These are a plethora of interoperable projects. Projects that encompass several directorates. This also have proved to be a great growth opportunity and exposure to our members despite the challenges posted by the pandemic.

Limitless for one has reached almost every JCIP region. Our Ten Outstanding Guro Awards (TOGA) has also collaborated with other JCI LOs. Not to mention also our International Programs such as the JCI Rise. We have a lot of joint-GMMs as well with our sister chapters not to mention Business Academy Programs, and even internal programs such as the Mobile Legends Metro Area Cup, Ride Run and Plant and 4x4 and Formula 1 among others.

We have been doing joint projects as much as we can with respective LOs where our communitybased projects are located for Community Development and Special Projects. Another notable landmark to become is the OPLAN Kaisa which would be a Memorandum of Partnership of JCIP with the Philippine Army which will help enhance the synergy of community based projects while support national development with all JCI LOs and Army Units.

Editor’s Note

We have also been supporting and will continue to support the JCIP National Programs as they blend in with our existing respective programs and projects. Examples of such are, OPLAN Kaagapay – OPLAN Damayan, Bags to School – E.D.M., Got Heart – 1UP, and Camp Pag-ibig – Golden Heart among others. This not to mention hosting and supporting Regional Conference or Area Conference Meetings and programs with speakers, hosts and venue. Greatly, we have been collaborating and supporting projects of our fellow sister chapters, baby chapters and fellow JCI chapters. As we usher into our Diamond Jubilee and being the “First in Asia,” we carry that moral responsibility and father role in bringing together all LOs and making sure we also all grow and progress in making the best leaders in the country and in Asia. Despite the physical challenges of the pandemic, while we hope for the remainder of the year to be better, in order that we may physically socialize with our JCI sisters and fellow members and our National organization more, we can say that to date, we have our national presence strongly felt and our national relationship equity progressing from the strides and efforts of the 2020 Board of Directors. We intend to consistently grow this relationship until the end of the year and hopefully grow even beyond being the First in Asia. More importantly, we have shown to our members that National Relations is a great growth opportunity to be better leaders. Congratulations to the National Relations Team headed by 2021 JCI Manila Director for National Relations Director Dinno B. Go Cedenio and to all supporting Directors, Commissioners, Chairmen and JCI Manila Brothers! Let us all finish strong brothers. Mabuhay ang JCI Manila!

Dear Readers, After more than a year of waiting, domestic tourism is slowly opening up again for travel. Finally, we can experience the sights, sounds and tastes of what our beautiful country has to offer. It is also timely that this issue of the Asian Pearl which features our dedicated and hardworking National Relations Directorate under the leadership of Director Dinno Go Cedenio and his core team, and our sister-chapters who will help us to re-discover some of their cities and provinces through their recommendations.

My most memorable experience probably is attending and being the Chairman of JCI Asia-Pacific Conference (ASPAC) last 2018. This experience was super fun and the stress as a Chairman was really worth it because I was able to get to know a lot of people from other chapters internationally, plus I get to enjoy the food and the experiences of attending an international event. Aside from that, I was able to get to know JCI as an organization deeper and became aware of the politics and complexities within. My Onto and NatCon experiences are unforgettable too, I had so much fun with our brothers and our sisters – the deeper bonds, the parties, food trips… you name it, aside from the enjoyments of traveling.

My most memorable JCIM experience was being involved in Clean-up Week 2020. It was the project that really opened my eyes to the scale and impact that JCI Manila can have for a community. Clean-up Week 2020 was not just one project but a series of projects that helped to raise the cleanliness and environmental-friendliness of Manila in partnership with multiple sponsors and government agencies. The experience showed me that JCI Manila is a force for good that collaborates with its partners to bring about a better reality for the communities it serves.

My BJC process. My initial try as a BJC failed, and sadly, I lost most of my first team. It took a lot, but I bounced back and stepped up as the Project Chairman of our re-organized group. It truly stretched my leadership skills and exposed me to work with people who have different strengths and motivations. Our work led to an amazing project that reached those who would otherwise be unreachable, and we were able to make a small but positive change that was acknowledged and won Best Baby Jaycee Project in 2020.

JCI Ilo-ilo Ilang Ilang

Ilo-ilo By. Pres. Ma Juana Ester Senupe

Where is the best place to visit?

Iloilo is home to the most amiable and sweet people, with great beaches just within an hour’s drive from the heart of the city and some of the some of the best preserved infrastructure from the colonial era. With a rich history, culture, and diversity, Iloilo is home to many old churches and historical mansions, such as the Molo Mansion, Jaro Cathedral, and the historical Santo Tomas de Villanueva Church in Miag-ao which was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Sunsets from the beaches of Iloilo are a sight to behold. For the more adventurous souls, Sicogon Island, Agho Island, and Isla de Gigantes beckon with their pristine waters and warm island folk. There are also many scenic tourist farms that are a short distance from the city, with sunflowers to staircases to the heavens, or just spot to unplug and soak in the beauty and peace of nature. Iloilo has something for everyone.

What is a must-try food or experience?

A trip to Iloilo is a gastronomic delight. No visit is complete without a steaming bowl of La Paz batchoy is a must for tourists – a noodle “miki” dish served with pork and broth slow cooked for hours, generous toppings of fried garlic, spring onions and chicharron.

Another lip smacking -dish in Iloilo is pancit molo made of seasoned ground meat wrapped in what is called molo wrapper and is cooked in broth along with chicken strips, molo dry and spring onions. From local coffee shops offering native coffee and delicacies, diners serving up well-loved Ilonggo cuisine or a siopao uniquely Ilonggo, and restaurants with dishes to tempt the most discerning of palates, mouthwatering dishes can be found at every corner of Iloilo.

Why do I love Ilo-ilo?

Iloilo is fondly called the City of Love. Ilonggos are known for being malambing, charming and sweet. The moment one person speaks, you could easily identify that someone is an Ilonggo because it feels like he is crooning a love song for you. People from Iloilo City are not only known because of their sweetness, but they are also known for being helpful during trying times. One visible example is the Ilonggo Bayanihan spirit during this COVID-19 pandemic. Ilonggos banded together to help their fellow Ilonggos who were greatly affected by the pandemic. With its scenic spots, delectable food, and warm hospitality, Iloilo is a great destination for those who want to kick back and relax from the hustle and bustle while still having easy access to the comforts of the urban landscape.

Manila By: Pres. Donna De La Cruz

Where is the best place to visit?

JCI Manilena ladies love exploring and soaring heights. Intramuros is one of the places that brings us back to the historical Manila while at the same time allows families and friends to enjoy sceneries - be it religious, food & dining and the arts too! Another favorite is Binondo, not just because of the stories behind our country’s very own Chinatown.

What is a must-try food or experience?

Bambike Ecotours are unique guided tours within the walled city that support the healthy lifestyle. Authentic Chinese food & delicacies in Binondo (Chinatown) are a must try, whereas the walled city’s aesthetically-driven cafes and restaurants such as La Cathedral serve as a feast for the eyes.

Why you love your city?

Manila is definitely close to our hearts because of the balance that it gives - it reminds us of our history, while at the same time, offers modern forms of entertainment, food and so much more!

Where is the best place to visit? There are too many places worth visiting but here are some to check out: Beach For fine sand, fresh & cheap seafood: Sumilon & Bantayan Island For diverse marine life: Moalboal, Malapascua For adventure, treks, chilly weekend getaways with mountain views: Balamban, Busy

What is a must-try food or experience?

Must-try Food: Carcar market- lechon & puso or Matias- bbq & puso, Danggit/Labtingaw from Bantayan Must-try Experiences: Canyoneering in Kawasan Falls, Osmeña’s Peak, island hopping, Sardine Run in Moalboal, Trek Mt. Manunggal, Visit Simala/ Temple of Leah, Sinulog (when things are ok)

Why you love your city?

Cebu is such a unique place as it’s a great mix of city & province life. We can choose to go to the beach and/or mountain and get there in less than 1 hour.

Cebu can probably be best remembered thru the ff:

Lechon and Puso

Lechon is known across the Philippines as a must-eat in Cebu but it’s best paired with another Cebuano icon - “puso” which means “hanging rice”. This is rice wrapped in a triangular casing of coconut leaves and is usually hung and sold alongside lechon.

Sinulog Festival

The Sinulog Festival which comes from the Cebuano word “sulog” which describes the movement of the water current (forward-backward step of the dance). More than what this is known today as one of the major festivals of the province of Cebu, this celebrates the Santo Nino de Cebu which was handed to Rajah Humabon of Cebu from Ferdinand Magellan which signified the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.

What is a must-try food or experience? We take the eating and preparation of food seriously in CDO.

CDO By: Pres. Mika Mora

Where is the best place to visit? Cagayan de Oro is located on the island of Mindanao, and it’s known as the City of Golden Friendship. True-blooded Kagay-anons (kahgai-ah-nons) are known to drop whatever they are doing in order to entertain family and friends. Gatherings are often held at home, or from the back of a vehicle depending on the age group you are with. Some say that the laid-back lifestyle can be attributed to the proximity of both beach and mountain escapes. The city is nestled between the highlands of Bukidnon and the beautiful Macajalar Bay. You can easily go rafting along the Cagayan River

in the morning, and then take a van up to the mountains to go ziplining at Dahilayan in the afternoon. Cagayan de Oro is also known as the gateway to Northern Mindanao. After flying into Laguindingan Airport (IATA code: CGY), you have about a 45-minute drive into the city proper. Many travelers use CDO as their hub and then do day trips to places like Camiguin Island, Bukidnon, and Iligan. CDO has a variety of accommodations available from the super-budget hotels to more luxury options. Glamping has also started to become increasingly popular due to our good weather and abundant locations.

Lechon (roasted pork) is a mainstay at celebrations. We also have signature local delicacies like sinuglaw (grilled pork belly with fish ceviche) and binaki (steamed corn cake). You could stay a week in the city and not run out of new places to try out. From local to international cuisine, we have nearly everything here. Most of the favorite pasalubongs (souvenirs) are food-related such as the famous pastel of Camiguin Island, chicharon, roasted peanuts, and cashews.

Why you love your city?

Despite the many attractions and tourist spots in the city, a city tour can be as short as 4-5 hours, depending on your guide. Some of the most popular places to visit are Divisoria Park, the City Museum, the local markets, the La Castilla Museum, and the Museo de Oro. If you have enough time, you can also opt for a tour of Bukidnon where you’ll be taken to the Monastery of the Transfiguration and the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation. If adventure activities are your thing, then we have white water rafting, white water tubing, the longest dual zipline in the Philippines, canopy walking, bouldering sites, trekking, and many others. Beach bunnies also have their choice in white sand beaches from the pristine waters of White Island in Camiguin to the relaxed vibes of Duka Bay Resort in Medina.

Para Sayo, A Vaccination Awareness Campaign of JCI Manila By Jeremy Kho

As part of our Vaccination Awareness Campaign, JCI Manila has commissioned digital posters that would communicate the importance of getting vaccinated. As our culture is Family-oriented, we wanted to highlight that by being vaccinated you not only protect yourself but also for your loved ones. That was why we came up with the slogan “Magpabakuna Para Sayo at Para Sa Kanya” literally “Get vaccinated for yourself and for them”. This pandemic has already caused so much pain in our individual lives psychologically, mentally, and financially. In times like this we need people around us to comfort and nurture us. By using emotive visuals of hugging people, we wanted to elicit the concept of touch, something that we cannot really do to our loved ones in these times because of social distancing measures. We want

people to get the feeling of being hugged by our loved ones because we have not seen them for a long time. Another point that we wanted to emphasize is that getting vaccinated is a duty to the people we love. We all know that once one person in our household gets infected by the virus, then there is a high percentage that the virus will spread to others in our household. The only way to prevent our loved ones from getting sick is for everyone to do their part and get vaccinated. We hope that by reframing our message to target our basic emotion like the longing to be touched and our sense of family obligation will outweigh the fear and reluctance that Filipinos have in getting vaccinated.
