SUCCESS, REQUISITES.

Defining success is easy, but achieving it is another story. So the “how to” is far more important than “what is.” To my mind, the key elements of success are “goal + execution.” Defining our goals is essential since success is relative. Moreover, execution is the link between goal and success. On goal. A typical business goal may be profit; an artist’s goal may be fame or accolade; an organization’s goal may be a certain number of members. At Asian Pearl Journal, our definition of goal has evolved beyond a mere platform to report projects. It has transformed to, among other things, making significant impact to the members and encouraging them to be part of APJ. Specifically, our goal was in line with the chapter’s objective to make #everybrothercounts. We aspired to feature as many projects of our brothers as possible, encourage more writers and contributors, and learn from our brothers on their experience and advice. By end of this year, these objectives led us to over 60 articles from regular issues alone, 20 writers and contributors, and 10 Ask A Bro and JCI Journey, A Brother’s Tale. (Segue: the number above may not be sufficient to cover all the projects in the chapter; but perhaps enough to receive Best of the Best Project in the Area Conference and Best Publication in the National Convention). On execution. The dream is free but the hustle is sold separately, as they put it. There is no point belaboring that action is crucial. But for us in APJ, an effective action calls for teamwork. It cannot be gainsaid that the true measure of success is teamwork. To quote Henry Ford, “coming together is the beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” The effort of each writer, contributor and editor, taken collectively, immensely helped APJ reach its goal. To end, I am glad to end this note (and my stint as the editor-in-chief) by thanking all the writers, contributors, current and past editors, layout artist, board of directors, especially Dir. Paolo Balinas. You all made APJ’s success this year possible.

Cheers! Ron Dumlao Editor-in-Chief
