MALACANAN PALACE MANILA

MESSAGE My wannest greetings to the Junior Chamber International - Manila as you hold your 68th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies. Civic organizations like the JO have my gratitude for being among our government's consistent partners in strengthening our citizenry and revitalizing our communities. For many years, the Jaycees have been at the forefront of efforts to organize projects and create opportunities for both members and beneficiaries to participate in nation-building. May this event inspire you to reflect on your organization's past accomplishments1 and may a braver, more optimistic JC! arise as you continue to uplift the lives of our people. To the new officers: Embody the same level of integrity, commitment, and compassion that your predecessors exhibjted during their term. Armed with such virtues, you will be able to earn the respect and confidence of your colleagues, leading your group towards even more meaningful involvement in our society. To the entire JCI Family: May you remain unwavering on th e Daang Matuwid; our country needs you more than ever, for the bright future we have long aspired for is well within our reach.

beloved chapter. These are the members that continuously and unselfishly give their time not only to JCI Manila but also to the entire organization of JCI. With this being said, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the JCI Manila elders and members for continuing to make this chapter to what it is today; a world class chapter! I am proud to raise the flag of our chapter and I ask for your prayers that I be able to lead this chapter and serve its purpose based on what God has designed it for. To all our sister chapters both local and international, and all of our colleagues in the JCI community, thank you very much for gracing this very important event. JCI Manila is here to support you in all your endeavors and please be assured we are here to share any knowledge we have with you which will allow our JCI organization to grow better and stronger as a whole.

I

ts been 17 years since I walked into the Manila Jaycees Clubhouse wherein I was clueless and had no idea what I was doing there except for the fact a good friend of my father, Mr. Felix Ang invited us to what they call a recruitment night. Since then, Jaycees has been part of my life and I have gained so much in terms of personal development since this chapter has taught me so much. However, I have to say everything gained was practically just a consolation compared to the friends I am accumulating through this organization that I am growing old with. Looking back, that clueless night turned out to be one of the best decisions I have done in my life. As my favorite saying goes…. “God allows everything to happen for a reason”. The year 2016 will most likely be the most important year in my JCI career. As I proudly take the helm of JCI Manila, together with my Board of Directors we look forward to a very productive year with the members of our

UNIVERSITY OF LEADERS

68th

Induction

armest greetings to the Junior International-Manila as they prepare to celebrate their and Turnover Ceremonies!

More Than six decades of work in developing a new generations of youthful leaders who can help transform their communities and –in the fullness of time- their nation, is inspiring and fulfilling work. In a sense, it is a mission that goes beyond mere self-realization and instead nurtures a generosity of spirit that encourages the younger generation to accept greater responsibility for helping their community, and their country, towards genuine progress and development.

And now, in an era or increasingly complex social, economic, financial, and political situation in our county, it has become even more crucial that the best and brightest among our youth be trained in the kind of leadership that will one day help them lead, and transform, their communities, and perhaps even their nation. Their is no better young leader than today, and no better mentor that JCI-Manila to train our youth for such a task. Congratulations and Mabuhay!

T

o the Junior Chamber International – Manila, congratulations on your 68th Induction! To the incoming board, I wish you the best of luck.

JCI, specifically the Manila chapter, has long had a soft spot in my heart. As you may know, my late father, Ambassador Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr., was the first President of what was then the Manila Jaycees before eventually becoming National President and then World President of JCI. As you still are today, the Jaycees were full of youthful enthusiasm that was focused on community service. From its very first project, a week long activity called “Clean up the City Campaign”, JCI has played a significant part in nation building.

2016 is a very significant year for our nation as we have our national elections in May. Over the last 6 years, the Philippines has assumed a leadership role in international affairs including hosting APEC last year. Part of our success has been the drive of the current administration towards good governance and transparency. In order for this initiative to be successful, it takes the work of each and every one of us. While the selection of our next President is important, everyone still plays a role in nation building. This embodies the spirit of JCI. The Philippines could use more dynamic, young men that want to make a meaningful difference so that we can truly transform our nation into one that we can all be proud of. Once again, I would like to congratulate all of you. Keep up the good work and mabuhay Philippines!

ear members of JCI Manila, Please accept warm greetings!

I am very honored to be addressing you at this time as we begin a new year within JCI and our first step into another century. This year we will be building on the amazing momentum that we have gained as we celebrated 100 years of impact around the world. As we have demonstrated the incredible contributions that JCI has made now for one hundred years, we must capitalize on the publicity and interest we have generated and continue to demonstrate what passionate active citizens are capable of when they partner with all sectors of society for sustainable impact. This year our focus is that as we continue to analyze the needs in our community, we will have the courage to Just Act and find creative ways to address those needs. We must feel more and do more. I am confident that JCI members are empowered and eager to continue to create positive change as we adopt and carry the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. One of our big initiatives this year will be the the Peace is Possible campaign, which will mobilize young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate and take action and commit to an everlasting world peace. The need for JCI is more relevant today than it has ever been, and we must rise up to the challenges of our time. I have great confidence that JCI Manila will continue to dedicate its efforts to leverage opportunities to expand JCI’s influence and impact as we seek to unite all sectors of society for sustainable impact. We wish you all the best in this momentous event of the JCI Manila Induction Ceremony as you begin 2016. Remember to Just Act for thefuture of our world.

n last year’s induction, Pres. Steve Baltao broke tradition and made the induction of the Senate board simultaneous with the regular board. The Senate Board stood behind them during ceremony. He wanted this to be very symbolic and meaningful. It gave honor and respect to the Senate who will be looking after the regular members. All great JCI Manila Senators like Don Bagatsing & Washington Sycip were also given program time to talk about JCI Manila history which truly made us appreciate our rich & colorful heritage. Steve’s coming signalled change and excitement. And truly indeed, the outgoing board, achieved many milestones and further increased active participation among members. Steve was our No. 1 cheerleader & his team has rallied the whole chapter to perform at its best. I would like to praise outgoing President Steve Baltao & his team for an awesome performance. Thank you for your passion & dedication.

In December 17, 2011, Typhoon Sendong hit my hometown, Iligan, really hard. Many perished and lost their homes. I got a call from Ramie Villavicencio on Dec 24 at around 11am. He said he was on the way to the airport with some food and donated goods for the sendong victims. Rami wanted to know if it was safe to land in Iligan’s old airport wc was rarely used. We met Rami, his wife, Ginger and some cousins at the airport after a few hours and were so amazed to see a plane full of food stuff, clothes, slippers and even toys for the kids. Before he left back for Manila on that same day, he called all of us and offered a special prayer giving praise and honor to God for the supplies and for the opportunity to serve. This is how Rami really is. A man of action and a leader with a big Heart. And more importantly a man of God. Rami is now being called to serve as President of a very prestigious chapter, not to mention, one of the best in the World. He will surely put more meaning and purpose in our chapter by strengthening our Faith in the Lord. Rami is backed by a great team. I have seen his team work behind the scenes and they truly deserve to be on the Board of Jci Manila. As incoming JCI Manila Senate President, I am very excited to work with Rami and his team. Our theme this year is “Connecting Generations”. We will be the bridge between the various batches of JCI Manila Leaders who have been honored with lifetime memberships in the Senate. We can learn so much from each other. Age, generation, status & position will not be barriers in forging strong bonds. Congratulations to Rami & his Board. I pray that you will continue to champion the Jci vision and mission as well as uphold our JCI values. Godspeed.

reetings to our brothers in JCI Manila!

It is of great honour for me to be able to serve your amazing organization this year. Not only is JCI Manila the pioneer JCI Chapter both in the Philippines and in Asia, but JCI is also an exemplar of being organized, having camaraderie, and setting high benchmarks. Time and time again, your organization has created history, and continues to do so through your motivated members. In my 6 years of JCI, I have come to better appreciate the efforts your organization has brought forth in helping everyone succeed. The success of JCI Philippines as a whole lies in cooperation and active participation, both of which you have carried exceptionally well. n behalf of JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes, may I first congratulate Immediate Past President Steve and his board for taking JCI Manila to another new height in 2015 bagging The Most Outstanding Chapter in the World. Thank you JCI Manila for always being so supportive to your sisters in Hong Kong. JCI is a very magical platform that brings us together. n behalf of the officers and members of the JCI Tokyo, it is my pleasure to extend warmest congratulations to the JCI

Manila on inauguration of new president Ramiro Villavicencio. The JCI Manila has provided the organization with great leadership and it is great honor for us that JCI Manila and JCI Tokyo have strong relationship. Helsinki is honoured to have received the invitation to the 2016 induction and turnover

ceremony of JCI Manila. Pres. Ramiro N. Villavicencio, it was a privilege to meet you in person Kanazawa during the 100th JCI World Congress, and learn about Your current inspiring projects underway for the year 2016. Helsinki and Manila have been sister chapters for decades and I’m delighted to say that the Manila spirit is strong in JCI Helsinki. The longest running project in all of Finland bears its roots in Manila – this year we have the honour to award the “Policeman of the Year” for the 41st time, following a tradition initiated in the early years of our twinning collaboration. The Jaycee spirit is very strong in JCI Manila between your members and towards us in your sister chapters, as we were glad to witness during the JCI 100 year celebrations in Kanazawa last November. We were to see this also given international recognition and be present to cheer for you at the Awards Ceremony - the awards for the “Most Outstanding Local Organization” and “Best Growth & Development Program” could not have been awarded to a more deserving chapter. It is always a pleasure to meet up with our brothers at JCI Manila and we hope to maintain and revitalize our relationship during this year. A wise mentor once told me to “remember to set aside the things you work on once in a while and focus on the people – they are the essence.” President Ramiro, you have an exemplary chapter to lead with your board of directors. With no doubt, you will lead JCI Manila into the next Century of Impact with devotion and discipline, and will make a great difference to the lives of the people in your community.

No walls. No fences. No borders. ith JCI Manila fresh off yet again another landmark year capped off by the election of our very own Past President Steve Tycangco up to the distinguished position of JCI Philippines National President, we find ourselves in the familiar spotlight, which comes with it many responsibilities that we at Manila know only too well.

With our membership continuing to grow at a rate we have not seen in recent JCI Manila history, inevitably so does the diversity and spectrum of our members. It is with this foremost in our minds, that we set out to achieve "Brotherhood Beyond Borders." The very foundation JCI Manila, and of course JCI as a whole has always been brotherhood. And with this mission, we

return to the aim of recognizing each individual member's unique gifts, abilities, and most of all, identities. Harking back to our original goals of giving every member various opportunities for growth and development within our JCI community, the greater community, the world, but most especially within themselves. We have always been known for brotherhood. Who has not encountered a situation where the very mention of a shared JCI Manila membership between two or more strangers results in a quick and instinctive familiarity and a sense of fraternity? With the immediate knowledge that there is a powerful undercurrent of fellowship borne of the certainty that there is a bond of shared values, mutual friends, and so

JCI MANILA IN THE 21ST CENTURY: STILL AMONG THE WORLD’S BEST by JCI Senator Reginald T. Yu 2011-2012 President, JCI Senate Manila

N

ovember 7. Two Thousand and Fifteen. Nine-forty seven in the evening.

Amid the bellows of Japanese drums which broke the long, nervous silence that painted the JCI Awarding Ceremonies at the grandiose Ishikawa Ongakudo Concert Hall, the normally jovial Manila delegation sat motionless as their chapter’s name was called from among the ranks of finalists vying for the most coveted award of the evening. Seconds seemed like days as 2011 JCI World President Kentaro Harada opened the envelope that revealed the winner among the five nominees for the “Most Outstanding JCI Local Organization” of the World award. Steve Allen C. Tycangco, the 2014 JCI Manila President whose bids were up for awards this Congress, revealed his agitation as he fidgeted endlessly. Then, even as Harada began to utter the momentous words – “Join me in congratulating the most outstanding JCI local organization from… Philippines! JCI MANILAAAAAA!!!” – the shrieks, cheers and loud outcries that erupted from the entire Philippine delegation resonated the decades of hard work that built up to this moment, since a similar scene happened in Kobe, Japan almost twenty years ago. It was JCI Manila’s time to shine… again.

53

JCI MANILA

@JCIManilaPH

Indeed, for the past sixty-eight years since its founding, Junior Chamber International Manila (JCI Manila) have always set the benchmark for leadership excellence, not only in the communities with which they serve, but also to the other JCI local organizations, both here and abroad, who have tried very hard to emulate. And the most tangible manifestation of this excellence is none other than the receipt of awards during the most prestigious of Conventions: the JCI World Congress, the Mecca of the JCI movement from all over the world. Over a span of nearly seven decades, JCI Manila has been bestowed with the arguable title, “the Most Awarded JCI Local Organization in the World,” owing to the countless trophies it has hauled almost every World Congress. Even more so, as it has managed to win the coveted “Most Outstanding Chapter of the World” Award no less than eight times, the latest of which was during the 70th JCI World Congress in Kanazawa, Japan – a feat still unmatched by any other JCI local organization in history. As an organization, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Manila has merited world recognition during several occasions. It is credited notably for having spearheaded the JCI movement in Asia and the Far East. It has also given the Junior Chamber International three JCI Presidents, twelve JCI Vice-Presidents, two JCI Secretaries-General, and two “Most Outstanding JCI Members of the World.” JCI Ma/jcimanila

nila was awarded an unprecedented eight times as the “Most Outstanding JCI Local Organization of the World.” Its success was marked, not only by a number of notable achievements done within the country but also by its contributions, which benefited many, in other parts of the globe.

standing JCI Member of the World” award to Operation Brotherhood International Coordinator, Oscar J. Arellano, 1951-1952 JCI Manila President and 1954 JCI Vice-President, for his unparalleled work as World Chairman of “Operation Brotherhood,” the largest international project of Junior Chamber International, which became a total JCI commitment for two years, as JCI members from many member nations provided medical relief to the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees fleeing North Vietnam following the partitioning of their country.

These accomplishments are signs of its enduring significance to the promotion of “service to humanity,” a “government of laws,” and “economic justice.” During its sixty-eight years of existence, young prominent citizens were elected as presidents whose utmost concerns were to provide the necessary means to open up new paths to promote involvement. Through their indefatigable efforts during their respective incumbencies, JCI Manila quickly rose to unsurpassed prominence, eclipsing many established civic organizations in existence, which were decades older than their junior counterparts. Indubitably, JCI Manila has shown to the Filipino people that applicable remedies are found without searching for new ideologies to serve as blueprints for change and renewal. Their optimism and success lie in their confidence and cognizance of the fact that internally available means exist: and it is for us to seek out these means and apply them. This was the same vision that Artemio L. Vergel de Dios saw when he extended this organization in the Philippines almost sixty years ago. It works on the basic premise that youth, by its very essence, is oriented towards change, not because of restlessness but more on a consciousness that this change is to be for the good of society as it progresses and as they get fully involved in it after years of preparations. It is interesting to note that, during the first years when JCI started introducing the concept of awards, JCI Manila opted not to actively participate in it, as the local administrations felt that the awards should not be something that was consciously worked for, but rather be gratuitously given by the award-giving body. The first major recognition received, therefore, was given, not by anyone within the JCI organization, but by a professional business group, particularly, the Business Writers’ Association of the Philippines (BAP), as it bestowed the BAP Award of the Year to JCI Manila, under President Alberto M. Meer, for having “lent the most aid in the promotion of free enterprise” in 1950. This changed in 1954, during the 9th JCI World Congress in Mexico City, when JCI Manila, under the leadership of President Luis Maria Z. Araneta – fresh from its successful bid to have JCI adopt the “Operation Brotherhood” Indo-Chinese Refugee Relief Project passed as an international endeavor during the General Assembly – decided to bid for awards. Its initial attempt was not in vain, as it garnered two major awards: The Most Outstanding Project in Service to Humanity for “Operation Brotherhood” and the Liberty Trophy for the “Most Outstanding Project in Youth Activities” for “Voice of Democracy.” Since then, JCI Manila has become one of the most active award bidders, not to mention recipients, in every JCI Awards Ceremony. JCI Manila was also credited for being the local organization where one of whose members became the first to receive a world individual award. In 1955, JCI Peter B. Watts conferred the “Most Out-

54

@JCIManilaPH

“Never before have I seen such genuine interest, concern and worldwide cooperation for a single purpose,” President Peter B. Watts said in referring to the Operation Brotherhood project. “Under the inspiring leadership of World Coordinator, Oscar J. Arellano, the ‘Jaycee of the Year’, who underwent great sacrifices, we had the satisfaction of helping people desperately in need. I shall never forget moving amongst the doctors and nurses in the refugee camp hospitals in Vietnam.” With the possible exception of a posthumous conferment to the late Joaquin V. Gonzalez as “JCI Senator No. 1” in 1952, the signal honor given to Oscar J. Arellano was not repeated by any JCI Manila member in the history of the World Congress Awards for “Outstanding Member of the World,” until almost 50 years later, when then JCI Manila Secretary-General Reginald T. Yu won it in 2004 during the 59th JCI World Congress in Fukuoka, Japan. As the years progressed, JCI Manila gradually caught the attention of the international delegates for consistently winning major awards annually. One of the highlights during the 17th JCI World Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1962, was when JCI Manila, under President Russel S. Swartley, garnered a Certificate of Merit for the “Most Outstanding JCI Local Organization of the World,” a great feat, considering no chapter won the major award for that category that year. Other major awards won by JCI Manila during that Congress were the JCI New Zealand Trophy for the “Best Local Project” for its Economic and Governmental Affairs and the “Outstanding Growth and Development Award.” The real banner year for JCI Manila, however, was during the Presidency of Aurelio O. Periquet Jr., when it won, for the first time in its history, the Minneapolis Award for the “Most Outstanding Chapter of the World” Award at the 18th JCI World Congress in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1963. For the past eight years, not a single JCI local organization among the more than 5,000 officially recognized Junior Chambers ever qualified for this prestigious award, until the evening of November 23, 1963, when JCI Manila was called to receive the trophy. The late President Periquet, in an interview weeks prior to his passing away, recounted that unforgettable moment: “When JCI Manila name was announced, the JCI officers stood up to lead the gathering in a long, standing ovation. The JCI Manila members present on that memorable evening were swarmed with congratulatory remarks and warm handshakes. The Philippine delegation, particularly JCI Manila, was practically crying as overwhelming emotions of exultation carried them away. The other lone contender for the award was Finland, who was given a Certificate of Merit.” After that big break in 1963, the quest for the Minneapolis trophy /jcimanila

became less elusive, as succeeding administrations were equally successful in garnering this signal recognition. During the 20th JCI World Congress in Sydney, Australia in 1965, JCI Manila under the auspices of President Eduardo S. Escobar, Jr., lost by only few points to a United States Chapter in getting the major prize; they settled for a Certificate of Merit for the “Outstanding Chapter” Award instead. However, JCI Manila came back with a vengeance the following year, when the chapter scored a first-ever back-toback victory, as it won the Minneapolis Award in 1966 at the 21st JCI World Congress in Kyoto, Japan and, again, in 1967 at the 22nd JCI World Congress in Toronto, Canada. Consequently, the names of Presidents Senen B. dela Costa and Gregorio B. Licaros, Jr. were forever etched in the roster of outstanding JCI Manila Presidents. The year 1970 ushered auspiciously, as it started the decade with another close fight to the “Outstanding Chapter of the World” Award during the 25th JCI World Congress in Dublin, Ireland. Losing only by a few points to a European chapter, JCI Manila, led by President (now our country’s Foreign Affairs Secretary) Albert F. del Rosario, won a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Chapter during that year. Instead of being daunted, succeeding administrations worked hard to rebuild its prominence in the international community, first by hosting the 23rd JCI Asia-Pacific Conference in Quezon City, then by audaciously working to successfully bid for the 1976 JCI World Congress in Manila.

fourth JCI Manila recipient of the “Most Outstanding Local President of the World” Award in 1992. Two years later, President Alexander T. Lichaytoo duplicated Past President Bagatsing’s near-impossible feat when JCI Manila was adjudged the “Most Outstanding JCI Local Organization of the World” during the 49th JCI World Congress in Kobe, Japan in 1994, and he was bestowed the “Most Outstanding JCI Local President of the World” during the 50th JCI World Congress in Glasgow, Scotland the following year. It took nearly twenty years for JCI Manila to regain its crown as the “Best JCI Local Organization of the World” during the 70th JCI World Congress in Kanazawa, Japan – once again affirming that Asia’s first JCI local organization continues to be among the world’s best. In the light of the chapter’s commitment in upholding its outstanding projects and programs, it can be said with certainty that it will continue to receive international acclaim in Junior Chamber conferences. For as long as existing projects are done with innovation and new projects are implemented with great positive impact, they will remain in the list of award-winning endeavors which will perennially inspire more adherents to work hard in being the best that they can be.

Although the bid was eventually awarded to St. Louis, Missouri, JCI Manila, were rewarded in more ways than one: it helped install past JCI Manila President Feliciano R. Belmonte, Jr. to the JCI World Presidency in 1976, it paved the way for a successful bid to host the 33rd JCI World Congress in 1978, and won for JCI Manila the 4th Minneapolis Trophy for “Outstanding JCI Local Organization of the World” in 1977 at the 32nd JCI World Congress in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 1980s was dubbed as the “silver era” of JCI Manila, as a succession of outstanding leaders steered JCI Manila to unparalleled heights, despite the worsening economic and political situation of the Philippines. President Jose Maria J. Fernandez distinguished himself as the first Manila Jaycee President ever to win the “Most Outstanding Chapter President of the World” Award during the 36th JCI World Congress in Berlin, Germany in 1981. His successor, President Louis B. Kierulf, handily won the 5th Minneapolis Award for “Most Outstanding JCI Local Organization in the World” during the 37th JCI World Congress in Seoul, Korea. But it was in 1983, at the height of the country’s political crisis, when President Ramon S. Bagatsing, Jr., outshone the competition and garnered away, not only with the chapter’s sixth Minneapolis Award, but also the second “Most Outstanding Chapter President of the World” Award during the 38th JCI World Congress in Taipei, Taiwan. During this period, subsequent administrations were successful in garnering many major awards, which ranged from the traditional “Outstanding Public Relations Project” Award, the “Humanitarian Assistance” Award, and the “Criminal Justice” Award, to the more unique categories such as the “International Trade Promotion” Award and the Award for “Best Project to Dissipate Intolerance.” Eight years after that glorious win in 1983, another milestone recognition was received by the chapter when, during the 47th JCI World Congress in Miami, Florida, President Benjamin L. Yam became the

irst off, I'd like to warn you that these are the musings of a 53-year old, and what I will be writing are, in all likelihood, more fiction than fact. However, I guarantee the reader that this makes for good reading, and I leave it up to you to thresh out the false from the true. I first met Rami right after World Congress Manila 1998. He was a fresh college graduate, and along with his far older brother Toto, these Villavicencio brothers joined what was then known as the Manila Jaycees. We were fresh from the triumph that was the World Congress, but never the type to rest on our laurels. the membership drive still went full force. with Toto and Rami being the fresh recruits at the start of 1999. Besides the disparity in age, Rami had his own clique as did I. 2001 was a difficult year for the Chapter. There were internal grumblings over how our affairs were being run, and the person who wanted to have a go at the presidency in the coming year was not popular. SULONG's predecessor, L.E.T.S.G.0., called a caucus to choose a standard bearer for

Art being a popular mode by which to raise funds, this particular project of Rami became very successful. Rami at that time was starting to help in the new phase of his family's business, and this took him to Clark a lot. However, he never failed in his Board duties, and sometimes he would catch up with meetings by flying over, something that a lot of us know is not uncommon for him. This dedication is something that Rami lives by, and is reflected in the other aspects of his life. Besides his deepened faith in God, his love for his wife, children, and family, his appreciation of fine food made obvious now by the blousy fit of all his shirts - even if they are meant to be fitted, Rami loves cars and aircraft. When we travelled for the China Mission in 2002, most shopped for clothes, or tea, or silly souvenirs. But Rami? He bought a model helicopter. Which he asked me to carry, because his luggage was already packed with clothes, tea, and silly souvenirs. When I attended the party in CATS where Rami announced his candidacy for Chapter President and slate, I was filled

WHAT AWAITS US THIS MONKEY

YEAR? By Lois R. Alog

O

n February 8, we will celebrate the Lunar Chinese New Year. However, in the Chinese Hsia Calendar, the year of the Monkey will arrive on February 4, 2016. Thus, babies born from February 4 onwards are already considered born on Monkey year. It is important to note why this is so as most people are completely unaware of this. Astrologers and Feng Shui practitioners use the solar calendar in calculations to demarcate the New Year for this reason: the solar calendar measures the rotation of the Earth around the sun that takes 365.5 days to make a full revolution, thus making it more accurate in relation to our full calendar year. The Lunar method measures the rotation of the moon around the earth that account for 354 days for 12 revolutions. The 11-day difference is accounted for by adding a lunar leap month of about 29 days every two or three years. As we anticipate the coming of Yang Fire Monkey this 2016, allow me to present its characteristics. This year is symbolized by two elements – the yang fire sitting on top of the Monkey which is a yang metal. Yang fire is likened to the sun – warm-hearted, hot that can easily explode, open-minded and straightforward. Yang metal is heavy metal or weapon metal used to make spears and swords. This means that it can be destructive and can easily damage. Therefore the two elements are in destructive cycle with fire conquering metal and have a fighting relationship. This indicates conflicts and clashes but on a more tamed

The Four Pillars chart of the year indicates that water is lacking, while the presence of three fire and metal elements respectively are very strong and a wood and earth in it. Fire is related to heart, eyes and circulation while metal refers to the breathing organs, lungs and small intestines. We must be on tight guard of our health this year, with the Illness Star on the center, as this scenario can bring health problems related to inflammation, heart disease and hypertension as well as that of the breathing organs in the form of flu. Since water is absent which is the element needed to cool us down, we must be mindful of how we deal with others as losing control can be easily manifested with the presence of strong fire. It is therefore suitable that we boost our immune system

to address health issues and be extra cautious not to engage in unnecessary arguments to avoid conflicts.

Not so favorable this year would be shipping, travel and hotel, property development, real estate.

This year, the animal clashing with the Monkey is Tiger. As Monkey is a “Travelling Horse”, this will indicate a year of more people travelling especially those born in the year and day of Tiger, Horse and Dog as well as people in year or day of Pig, Rabbit and Dog. With more people travelling, it will also initiate traffic accidents related to land, air and sea. Anyone with Tiger in his chart should be careful and carry a snake pendant or bracelet in order to mitigate this clash.

As it is important to know the entire components of your birth chart, the animal signs will just be presented in a way that they will be affected with respect to the changing of energy this year. It is important to note the good and bad sectors so you know which area to avoid and use.

People born in the year of the Monkey are said to be offending the “Grand Duke” so they need to carry the Snake in the form of pendant or bracelet. The more serious formation is that of the fire penalty, with the presence of Monkey, Tiger and Snake, especially if fire is unfavorable to you. It is said to bring about irritation, worries and serious misfortune related to fire element. The Monkey is referred as “Nobleman” for people born in the years of birth year ending in 5 or 9 like 1965, 1969, etc. This is a very good sign as nobleman represents helpful people in our lives like protective angels who will come to help us in our needs. It will also represent “Academic Star” for babies who will be born this year or anyone born in a yang fire year. It indicates high intellectual capacity and desire to learn. Those born in the years or days of Rooster can expect to have a more sociable year with romance luck on their side. INDUSTRIES THAT WILL FARE WELL FIRE related e.g. energy, entertainment, stock market, finance; METAL related e.g. Engineering, technology, jewelry, mining; and WOOD related – printing, media, textile, and logging.

The Argumentative Star 3 is in the NORTH WEST which is the position of Dog and Pig. Place any red objet here.

The Misfortune Star 5 is in the NORTH EAST, which is where the Tiger and Ox are situated. You may hang an all metal 6-rod windchime to dissolve the negative energy.

Illness Star 2 is at the center. Avoid noise and clutter here.

Robbery and Scandal Star 7 is in the NORTH. This is also the position of the Rat. Place any blue object here.

Heaven Star 6 is in the South, a neutral star but herein also lies the Three Killings energy of the year that pertains to three types of major loses. It is important to note not to sit with the back facing South and avoid renovations here. South is the position of the Horse.

Wealth Star 9 flies to the EAST, where Rab bit is. Just use the area often to activate the good star.

Academic Star 4 is in the WEST, where Rooster is positioned. There is prosperity star in this direction as well.

Victory Star 1 that also refers to future prosperity is in the SOUTHEAST, the location of Dragon and Snake. Any good sector is best using in order to activate the auspicious energy present there.

While the wealth star of the year is in the SOUTHWEST, where Monkey and Goat are located, it is noteworthy to remember that Grand Duke of the year is also positioned here. Hence it is also not advisable to make any substantial renovations in this direction.

Wishing everyone a peaceful, healthy and prosperous 2016!!!

It is one of the publication brought in by the American G.I.’s during the rebuilding of Manila. He went on reading how the article and he saw how the young men of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (or the Jaycees) helped out their community become a better place. TOBY’S

Roberto S. Claudio Chairman and CEO Toby’s Sports

SERVES UP AN ACE

“I lost my job because of jaycees. Because of a project that was assigned to me, unfortunately I’m fortunate, because this is where it all began…” With a little help from Mickey Mouse, Roberto Claudio built Toby’s Sports, the country’s largest sporting goods retail chain in the country. Roberto Claudio did not start out as an entrepreneur, nor was he born into an entrepreneurial family. He was working for one of the largest multinational companies in the country before he resigned because of a project that was assigned to him. He was then the marketing head of the world congress who promotes the activity around the globe and this is also the very reason why he had to leave. While promoting the congress around the archipelago, he saw some toys, and he told himself “maybe I can sell these in Manila since my job is in a tricky position”. And then he found himself stuck with a unit in Virra Mall, then a new building in the Greenhills Shopping Center.

limited product stock, Toby’s was not an instant success. “People were laughing. They said, ‘No one will go there. You don’t have a thing to sell.’ I said it’s just about perseverance. “Mr. Claudio shares. It was not until Christmas of the same year when Mr. Claudio got his break. He learned that the Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters were going to be licensed and sold in the Philippines for the first time. Mr. Claudio approached the Greenhills Shopping Center management and successfully negotiated for the exclusive distribution of Mickey Mouse items for the whole Christmas season. In return, Mr. Claudio pledged to donate 15% of his earnings to any orphanage the management wished. The success came but it also waned. Mickey Mouse items and other toys were a hit but sales dipped after Christmas. There was one item in his store, though, that continued to sell long after the holidays were over-skateboards-and he began envisioning a sports store. Mr. Claudio admitted that he knew nothing about sports and sporting goods suppliers. He started out by buying sporting goods from another retailer at a discounted price and then selling these in his store. The groundwork for a sporting goods store has been set up but a full conversion to sports was delayed when Mr. Claudio left for the United States.

“Virra Mall was being constructed (then) so I invested in a unit, intending to sell it after it was constructed. The mall was finished, I couldn’t sell it, and there were no buyers so I was stuck with a unit-maybe a twenty square meter- place, “shares Mr. Claudio. Without any prior experience in retailing, Mr. Claudio hit upon the idea of selling toys in this little space.

He stayed in the States for three years but the thought of his own sporting goods store never left him. “I didn’t have much to do there so I started working in a sporting goods store. I applied and they wanted a managerial position but I said, I just want to be the warehouseman or the stringer, just trying to learn the ropes. So I worked as a stringer, I learned how to string rackets, “says Mr. Claudio. His work as a stringer introduced him to equipment he never saw in the Philippines. While Mr. Claudio trained and gained more knowledge on sporting goods, his brothers helped him keep Toby’s running.

Mr. Claudio opened Toby’s, named after his eldest son, in October 1978. Mr. Claudio’s product lineup then included twelve different toys that he acquired from a barter trade in Zamboanga. With a

Coming home to the Philippines for good, Mr. Claudio went into sporting goods retailing fulltime and in 1982, Toby’s Sports and Hobbies was born. Mr. Claudio and his brother decided to open up in other locations when they saw the

demand for sporting goods. Stores in Harrison plaza, Makati, and SM North EDSA – their first branch inside a mall- were soon set up. Toby’s grew at about one store a year up to 1992. In 1992, Mr. Claudio decide it was the right time to franchise in order to meet the growing demand for sports goods, especially among 10-35 year olds who are Toby’s target markets. Without any prior experience in franchising, Mr. Claudio read books, did research, and visited the International Franchise Association in the US. He developed his own franchise system for Toby’s. Today, there are 40 Toby’s stores in the Philippines- half are company–owned while half are franchises. They have outlets in Metro Manila, Baguio, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Laguna, Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro City, and Davao City. Toby’s boasts of a wide selection of sports equipment and apparel-no counterfeits-which are subjected to quality control before being sold. The store used to sell only the top three brands in equipment and apparel to impress on the consumers that they can find the best in Toby’s. Eventually, the store added more brands to have a more flexible price range. Mr. Claudio says one of the things that set Toby’s apart from other sporting goods store is its total commitment to sports. “Not only are we engaged in selling products, we are also engaged in promoting sports at an early age. That’s where the new concept of Toby’s comes in, the Arena. We want kids to experience the atmosphere inside an arena, inside the gym.” says Mr. Claudio. The Toby’s sports arena features a half- court basketball shooting area and a 25-foot high freeform indoor climbing wall. In one outlet, the Arena also includes a full-size badminton court. The corporate entity, Quorum International. Inc., introduced new store formats beginning in 2007 with Toby’s Workout, a more lifestyle-oriented store highlighting workout equipment and apparel. It will employ a more instructional approach in presenting these products. In 2008, the company also launched a specialized running store called RUNNR catering to running aficionados, which is currently a popular trend. In 2009, UrbanAthletics was opened to cater to the younger market who look for athleticism but with a “stree cultrure” lifestyle. Other formats in the planning stages are an all-children’s store, an all-golf store, and an all-fitness equipment store. Aside from the Arena concept, Mr. Claudio aims to deepen the company’s involvement in sports for children. Toby’s already sponsors age group tournaments in badminton, tennis and women’s volley-

67

JCI MANILA

@JCIManilaPH

ball for 8-18 year olds. On top of that, Mr. Claudio will set up the Toby’s Sports Foundation, which aims to bring sports closer to the community. He hopes that through this foundation, sports will be more accessible to every Filipino child, especially children in underprivileged areas. Mr. Claudio is also active in serving the retail industry. He was the past President of the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) and is currently its Vice President for International Affairs. During his term as PRA President, he was at the forefront of drawing the government’s attention to retailers’ plight against illegal tiangges (flea market) and Duty Free Stores. It was also during his term that the Retail Institute, an organization that teaches retailing, was created. Mr. Claudio speaks enthusiastically about entrepreneurship. He hopes that more schools will teach basic entrepreneurship to encourage more young people to set up their own business. “Entrepreneurs are trained; they’re not born. At an early stage, there are intricacies in entrepreneurship that are not given to you in school. Successful stories in HR, Marketing, Production are taught by the book. Entrepreneurship should also teach failures. That way you can see what feature or characteristics of failure should be avoided, “he says. He tells future entrepreneurs to not be afraid of getting their hands dirty. “For me, entrepreneurship is about getting your feet wet and getting your hands dirty. If you have to go through it-drive a delivery vehicle, pack the products that you have to sell yourself-that for me is part of the learning process,” advise Mr. Claudio. And this basically is the same process that one goes thru in being a Jaycee. Its entrepreneurship in action. You look for a business to start. Being a Baby Jaycee you look for a project to launch. In entrepreneurship you are your own CEO. In Jaycees you learn to project your leadership skills and become the project leader. In entrepreneurship and being a baby Jaycee you execute your plans and responsible to yourself and your team. It’s an exercise not only in leadership but also competence on execution of your plans. Success or failure is within you. No one will fire you for your failures, although this affects others perception of you as a leader. This was the skill I acquired in being a Jaycee. And this is the discipline that you exercise that makes one a successful entrepreneur. “Keep it up! And always find a way to learn while committing yourself to spread positive change in everything that you do!”
