Flight Lieutenant Nosheen Chaudry A High-flying Woman

Flight Lieutenant Nosheen Chaudry is the Officer Commanding Engineering Support Flight on the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT), The Red Arrows, and is responsible for the delivery of training and monitoring the engineering standards and practices for over 100 engineering technicians and logisticians. Her role is integral to ensuring that the highest standards are maintained across RAFAT both at home and when travelling around the World during the display season; this she does in pursuit of ‘excellence’ in line with the RAFAT motto – ‘Eclat’. From early childhood Nosheen had a fascination with aircraft and the idea of flight. That interest stayed with her until she joined an Air Cadet Squadron. Participating in the usual Air Cadet activities of gliding, sport, rifle shooting and flying, Nosheen realised that this was a career in the making. She was later offered a RAF scholarship to be sponsored through Birmingham University to study engineering. After her successful graduation Nosheen reported to the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in August 2002 to begin training as an Officer Cadet. Following her 26-week Officer Training Course, Nosheen graduated as a junior officer and began her trade training; this was an extended period during which she learned the broad range of subjects she would need to work around the cutting-edge aircraft used by the RAF. “Now,” says Nosheen, “I am an Aero Systems Engineering Officer and fulfil a variety of roles with responsibility for the teams maintaining aircraft within our fleet. It’s challenging work but I like the fact I get post to begin a different challenge every two years.” But it’s not all hard work in the RAF, as Nosheen explained: “One of the big attractions for me about the Royal Air Force is the sports and adventurous training on offer. I am really keen on athletics and have competed for the RAF Athletics Team for the last eight years.” Clearly Nosheen’s life is extremely busy, but joining the RAF to be an Aero Systems Engineer may not be the first thought in the minds of most women. Nosheen said: “I knew from an early age that this is the kind of thing I wanted to do and my family were very supportiv. In fact, they encouraged me to apply for the University Bursary which certainly helps with the cost of getting a degree.” Flight Lieutenant Nosheen Chaudry saves her last piece of advice for young women currently considering their future careers: “I would encourage them to find out as much information as possible and include their family when making decisions. There are many opportunities to visit stations in the RAF and I would encourage this also. The RAF website is a good place to start!”

As we bid farewell to 2014 and welcome in the new year I am so excited to bring to you this issue of AsiansUK magazine. It is a true representation of the bright, bold and beautiful British Asian communities. We showcase Asian determination through the words of those who have broken through the glass ceiling (be they the movers and shakers in business, fashion or entertainment) and now hold the ladder down for others aiming to achieve. We platform the vivacity and splendour of our culture through, the captivating AsiansUK lifestyle, fashion and entertainment pages. I also have a special treat, Swetta Jumaani; renowned Bollywood numerologist has joined us to give you her predictions for the year ahead. One of highlights towards the close of 2014 was DR Rami Ranger MBE receiving the ‘Man of the Year Award’ presented by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. David Cameron. Dr Ranger is a successful entrepreneur and social and political reformer who started in 1987 with £2 from a shed and now runs a £200 million empire. He has been honoured by Her Majesty the Queen on seven occasions, six times for business and once for community service. I shall leave you to enjoy AsiansUK magazine with his wise words “Our communities should live together as one and strive to achieve great success. Together we had immense power, pulling in the strengths from a variety of pools as is demonstrated in all nations. Division has caused diversification, pain and loss. If we could support and work together Asians would show their true caliber and strength” Dr Rami Ranger MBE

Happy New Year to each and all!

Mr Mittal A sneek peek into the life of a self-made billionaire When Lakshmi Mittal’s father, Mohan Mittal handed over the reins of his humble steel business to his son, little did he know that his son would one day take it to such dizzying heights. Today, Arcelor Mittal is the largest steel conglomerate in the world and Lakshmi Mittal has consistently hovered on the top of the Asian Rich List for several years. If there has to be one man akin to a super power in the steel niche, it has to be Lakshmi Mittal. Born in 1950, in a quaint district of Rajasthan, Mittal had a typical Marwari upbringing. Humble business family, core values and traditional outlook best define his background. His father secured a partnership in Ispat, one of Kolkata’s leading steel firms. This perhaps, was a game changer for Lakshmi along with his brothers Pramod and Vinod. Mittal went on to head operations for a newly set up mill in Indonesia but he did not stop there. Instead, he ventured into a territory where few businessmen would dare to tread – he acquired a series of sick mills around the world and then transformed them into money churning enterprises. In 1994, Lakshmi Mittal merged his LMN Holdings into Ispat International for $13 billion. This signified the birth of Mittal Steel. It is unfair to brand this tycoon anything less than a visionary. What else could justify his decision to acquire steel companies in Kazakhstan? Unlike others he could foresee the anticipated steel demand in China, a country bordering Kazakhstan. With time, his empire progressed as did the Mittal market repute. In 2006, he initiated a move that changed the world - Mittal merged his company with Arcelor, Luxembourg for 33 billion dollars. This was payback to the Arcelor French Chairman’s jibe that Mittal Steel was a company of Indians paying monkey for monkey. Today, Arcelor Mittal is an entity that stands at the top of all mining and steel companies in the world.

Kensington Palace Gardens home oozes sheer royalty. It has interestingly been named Taj Mittal. He is quoted as stating that he truly owes it all to wife Usha Mittal. Usha is an equal stakeholder in the business and has been a constant source of support to this steel tycoon. The two had a traditional arranged marriage, but their love has grown from strength to strength. Mittal is also a doting father, he gets emotional when it comes to Aditya and Vanisha Mittal, his two much loved children. His daughter’s wedding set a trademark amongst the big fat Indian weddings; recorded as the second most expensive in history. Recently Lakshmi Mittal’s niece Shristi Mittal, 26, wed with a threeday extravaganza which brought Barcelona to a standstill and cost up to £50million. The ceremonies included an army of 200 butlers, cooks and secretaries; reportedly flown into Spain from India and Thailand. The 500 guests lucky enough to be invited were made to sign confidentiality agreements.

Lakshmi Mittal also takes an active interest in sports, education, philanthropy and charity. From Mittal Champions Trust to LNM Institute of Information Technology, he has founded trusts and funds galore. Of late, his name has been embroiled in a controversial bid to purchase the Blencathra Mountain in Cumbria, Britain.

Mr Lakshmi Mittal is truly selfmade man. When quizzed on why he keeps being a go getter he quips, “This is not about

creating a giant. It’s about creating the sustainability of the steel industry.”

The Power of Media Print Vs Digital? Low cost delivery has made the allure of e-media, such as online advertising and email, powerful, thus, increasing the popularity of such marketing channels.

Every e-media communication is promptly replaced by the next.

print and its key advantages over digital counterparts:

Tangibility – A print piece is a physical thing. Magazines and newspapers can remain within homes or offices for From the late 1990’s we months or years, seen by all witnessed a surge of businesses within; this could include leading migrating their advertising efforts entrepreneurs to his/her family to e-media, however in recent and friends. In comparison online years it has become apparent ads disappears instantaneously that print is here to stay and into cyber space after only being seen by you for a quick few Print is here to stay and an seconds.

indispensable prerequisite of any powerful marketing campaign.

an indispensable prerequisite of any powerful and impacting advertising campaign. Let’s explore this in greater detail. We all receive an overwhelming quantity of digital communication each and every day, such communication is effortlessly replaced by the next leaving very little visual impact, for example although the number of users and the time spent on social media is dramatically increasing, the time spent on each tweet is very low as every e-media communication is promptly replaced by the next. Now let’s take a closer look at

Credibility – There is something about print that gives a sense of legitimacy. The extreme saturation of popups and banner ads on the web can be overwhelming! The fear of spam and viruses is enough to make people wary of clicking. There is no imminent danger in a print ad. Less Print Ads – With more and more businesses relying solely on e-media for their advertising needs, the decline of print publication can actually be used as a marketing advantage. Branding – Print ads are excellent for solidifying your brand identity. Your ads should have a consistent aesthetic in terms of fonts, colours and types of images to establish

brand recognition. Target Marketing – Placing ads in publications such as specialty magazines can effectively reach niche audiences that are often near enough impossible to target through other avenues. More Engaging – Consumers are more engaged when reading printed material; unlike websites, which are often skimmed. QR Codes – Placing QR codes on printed adverts/advertorial is an excellent way to bridge the gap between print and web. The companies that are the most successful at integrating print into their marketing mixes are masters at crafting a cohesive campaign across all marketing channels, such as Lyca Mobile.

Satish Kumar Modi Satish Modi was born with the entrepreneurial spirit running through his veins, the son of tycoon Gujarmal Modi who is widely regarded to be one of the founders of modern India. Gurjamal established what became the Modi Group in 1933 when he started up a small sugar mill that he eventually transformed into a major industrial conglomerate; one of the first and most important major companies in the Indian industrial boom of the mid-20th Century. Satish, along with his four siblings was encouraged to pursue business ventures. The most significant of these endeavours for Satish was the launch of Modiluft, formed as a technical partnership with the German flagship carrier Lufthansa, it was one of India’s first postderegulation airlines. Modiluft became a pioneer in Indian Aviation. The airline has since been taken

over by the Sun Group and is now renamed as SpiceJet, one of India’s most successful and popular low cost airlines. Satish’s other business ventures include his foundation the J.F. India Fund, which is part of JP Morgan Chase. It is India’s first offshore mutual fund. Also as a keen sports fan, Satish took his business interests into the sporting world, founding the Wembley-based Modi Town Football Club (2013). Being a keen philanthropist, in 2010 Satish launched Arts for India, a charity raising funds to support underprivileged, yet talented artists from India. Since its launch, Arts for India has seen tremendous success, forming alliances with three prominent institutions; The International Institute of Fine Arts, the University of Arts London and the Prince’s Drawing School. Satish has been internationally recognised for his numerous achievements; including the Gem of India Award and being appointed an Ambassador for Philanthropy by the UK’s Founding Ambassador for Philanthropy, Dame Stephanie Shirley.

‘In Love With Death ‘ Satish Modi has written a book entitled, ‘In Love with Death’. In Love With Death, is at its very core, a book about death and our explores our lifelong relationship with it. Throughout the book Satish, postulates on death, he aims to encourage readers to face up to its inevitability and to begin a dialogue with death in order to lead fuller and more meaningful lives. Satish features his own musings, as well as a selection of stories and anecdotes of people that he has encountered throughout life that have enlightened his journey and helped him to comprehend the nature of death. From lived-experience to philosophical musings, In Love With Death explores the common reasons that prevent us from living fulfilled lives and aims to explore ways to overcome these barriers. In Love With Death is available on Amazon and all good book stores. www.AsiansUK.com

There are certain things that people say that stick with you. One day, when I was at school, a teacher told me that if he were to phone me, he wouldn’t have thought I was Asian. His words stuck with me. What was it that would make me ‘sound Asian’, even though I was born in the UK? I was intrigued. What interested me wasn’t the question of my ethnicity; it was the impact of my voice – the only tool available when you’re speaking to someone on the phone. I began to wonder how my voice was affecting the way I was judged, perceived or trusted. At the same time, what were the unconscious assumptions that I was making when hearing others speak? We often focus on what we can physically see in front of us when we first meet people – the way they look or dress, their eye contact and their body language. But when they begin to speak, how does this confirm or alter that initial

impression?

14

I have spent the last 13 months researching the impact voice has on corporate performance. I have spoken to more than 100 senior executives to understand whether the voice makes any difference to business decisions, who is hired or promoted, and sales – and, if so, how? I haven’t finished my research yet, but it is already clear that the voice is seriously undervalued. It has a significant bearing on your personal presence, building contacts, and – above all - chances of success. www.AsiansUK.com

Much of the focus of the research so far has been how your voice affects your employability. In an interview, how important is the way you say things compared to the suit you wear, how punctual you are, and how strong your handshake is? Interviewees are often advised to mirror their interviewer’s body language. I would add that it is critical to match and mirror through voice too, in order to demonstrate your attentiveness, adaptability and to establish a mutual level of comfort. Numerous studies have established strong links between visual attractiveness and succeeding in the workplace. I don’t dispute their relevance - but I also don’t believe they tell the whole story. One study found that a 1 per cent decrease in the pitch of a CEO’s voice can lead to $30 million more in assets for the company. Regardless of whether or not you are considered “good looking”, it is important to display confidence and self-assurance, which can come through most strongly in your voice. A good place to start in making a self-assessment is to listen to yourself on playback. It often provokes surprise and embarrassment, but it is a fascinating insight in to what other people hear or feel when you speak to them. Whenever I have done this exercise with people, they have been shocked to discover some of their irritating habits; repeating certain words, speaking too fast, or conveying an emotion different to the one they had intended through

“” 1 % decrease in the pitch of a CEO’s voice can lead to $30 million

their tone.

Your voice has similar power in your personal life too. From attraction to parenting, what you say and how you say it can make the difference between success and failure. From my research so far, it’s clear that we need to move away from simply what ‘looks’ or ‘sounds’ good to embrace all the things that serve to convey who we are, effectively and authentically. Especially our voices.

Guests included Harry Potter actress Bonnie Wright, chef and food writer Thomasina Miers, TV presenters Nick Ross, Sonali Shah and Seema Pathan, Eco-Age founder Livia Firth, Whistles’ Chief Executive Jane Shepherdson and Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Minister for Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls. The fashion world was well represented with shoe designer Jimmy Choo, Luella Bartley – design director of Marc By Marc Jacobs, Vogue blogger and i-D fashion editor Julia SarrJamois, and fashion designer Ashley Williams in attendance. The Circle is an organisation founded by Annie Lennox which champions women’s rights and equality by working with women who are passionate about change. The Asian Circle, an integral part of The Circle is a network of UK based Asian Women with a passion to support vulnerable women in India and South Asia by building awareness of their plight and through fund-raising. As its first project, The Asian Circle is working in partnership with Oxfam to provide tribal women in north-east India, Chattisgarh and Odisha, with support to help set-up women’s support centres in police stations and to provide counselling, legal and medical aid. Host for the evening, Meera Syal commented: “It’s fantastic to see so many successful and empowered women coming together to raise awareness and fight the scourge of domestic violence that exists across the world. We are all incredibly lucky to have been given a voice, an education and an opportunity to stand up for what we believe in. The women that we are trying to help have no voice, no education and live a life of constant fear. The work of projects we are raising funds for are a lifeline for women in the most impoverished areas of the world to escape to.” Laura Mvula added: “It’s a privilege to perform for The Circle. When women come together we are a powerful force – we can achieve anything. The Circle is a great example of this. It’s about women using the resources and skills at that they have to help those who need our support.” Domestic violence is the most widespread form of human rights violation in India. 72 % of men who beat their wives believe this is acceptable behaviour and 68% women victims believe this is acceptable; in Uganda it affects 60% of women. This event raised funds for two Oxfam projects in Uganda and India which are

supported by The Circle and The Asian Circle. Focused on tackling violence against women, the projects will help by providing support for victims, tackling social acceptance of violence against women, raising awareness of women’s rights and influencing laws to promote these rights. Santosh Bhanot, chair of The Asian Circle said: “This has been a great opportunity for members of The Circle and The Asian Circle to work together and reach out to a diverse audience of women who will be able to help us achieve our goals of education and empowerment and so reduce the shocking levels of domestic violence against women in both the Indian subcontinent and Africa.” Seema Malhotra MP, the first Shadow Minister for Violence against Women and Girls in the UK who was at the event said: “Domestic violence is little short of a national and indeed international scandal. We need to strive to educate both men and women that any form of abuse - physical or mental - is unacceptable, and that there should be a zero tolerance towards violence in relationships. Millions of children across the world are also witnessing domestic violence, impacting on their own health and wellbeing. It is vital to ensure the provision of safe houses and a support infrastructure that women trust and feel protected by, and that is delivered with cultural sensitivity. The work Photo credits: Patcharaphol Pongvijit that Oxfam and The Asian Circle are doing at a grass roots level is essential contribution to raising awareness and changing attitudes, and I have no doubt that these projects will change countless lives for the better.” Photo Credits: Patcharaphol Pongvijit

MSDUK Awards honour black and ethnic minorities Procurement leaders from the UK and around the world gathered in London to celebrate outstanding contributions made by black and ethnic minority owned businesses (EMBs) to drive inclusive procurement in UK supply chains. Premium Lighting Solutions from Cornwall; Clin-Tec from Glasgow; Octavian from Nottingham and Micro-Fresh from Leicester were all honoured at MSDUK’s African themed ceremony hosted by Colin Jackson CBE. The event followed the publication of the first piece of research dedicated to exploring the challenges faced by black and ethnic minority owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in public and private sector procurement. ‘The Road to Inclusive Procurement’ revealing that while new policies such as the SME Agenda (2011), the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 were helping the UK’s small business sector, they failed to work together to create a level playing field for EMBs. In a keynote address to 350 guests that included members of the Billion Dollar Round Table Group (BDR), Diane Varrin Eshleman, Managing Director and Chief Procurement Officer at Barclays, highlighted the need for all small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to be able to access capital, key decision makers and skills development in order to innovate and diversify global supply chains. Mayank Shah, CEO at MSDUK, said: “Black and ethnic minority businesses (EMBs) contribute £25-32 billion to the UK economy and are typically located in areas with higher than average unemployment, poverty and lower educational attainment. They are often the main drivers of economic growth in some of the poorest parts of Britain. These awards allow business owners to celebrate their achievement in winning big contracts and showcase their products to other corporate purchasing organisations who may want to buy from them in the future”. One of this year’s award winners was Byron Dixon, founder of the non-toxic antibacterial product, Micro-Fresh. Bryon, who works with household names like Next, Kickers and M&S, recently won a contract to supply over 300 launderettes in China, said: “It is truly humbling to be recognised as MSDUK’s Entrepreneur of the Year alongside other worthy candidates. It makes me really proud to see the belief that my clients have in our product. I am delighted to share this success with my team, my family and my friends”. This astute Asian businesswoman is now one of the most highly ranked women within the music industry, managing a multi-million dollar business.

l e v r a M A a m r a h Kiran S Kiran’s Love for Music From an early age Kiran possessed a great deal of love for music and the music industry. Setting up her own company in 2006, KIKIT was created to manage artists, tours, private bookings of artists and organising events. In the early days she saw very little return and due to the demands of daily life ‘to pay the bills’, Kiran had no option but to continue employment, freelancing as an Account Director for a leading international marketing Agency. Kiran refused to let go of her dream and continued restlessly to pursue her interest in music within her spare time. Kiran told AsiansUK how she “would return from work at 6pm and begin work on my new business at 8pm, often until 3am”. We must admire Kiran’s determination and resilience to continue ploughing her energies into a project which was not financially rewarding at first; when we asked why, she replied “when you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like work”.

24 www.AsiansUK.com

Manager of Prince – A twist of destiny Kiran, still a young Asian female, and very much new to the music scene precipitously gained international sweeping recognition as the Manager of renowned ‘Prince’ - the legendary Prince Rogers Nelson; labelled the best-selling artist of all time with over 100 million records world-wide. Kiran shares her story of the events leading to this astonishing announcement, “Prince was friends and a fan of many of the bands I happened to be working with and on occasion would show up at our shows. At places like the park in Brooklyn to the House of Blues in Vegas. Morris Hayes, a mutual friend, finally introduced me to Prince and our work relationship developed from there. Initially we just got to know one another, he took a keen interest in my work and we worked together on a few mini projects. The responsibility quickly grew and after year he gave me the title of his manager” Kiran adds “You never know what’s around the corner, if you have a dream, then try, always try!” Working with Prince was a whirl wind experience for Kiran taking her straight to the heart of the music industry. Under the management of Kiran, Prince secured further success guaranteeing Kiran’s recognition as a force behind ‘Prince’. Kiran says she learnt a great deal from Prince, “he is one of the smartest people I have ever met; he sees things bigger and better than many people would dare”. Cracking the mainstream Today KIKIT is firmly established as one of the leading names within the entertainment industry. We must applaud this Asian female

who set out to pursue her passion for music and cracked the mainstream music industry. Being AsiansUK and fully aware of the difficultly many an individual faces to gain presence within the mainstream; we had to ask Kiran how did she make it where others struggle? Kiran shared how she was brought up in Norfolk and as we all know this is a part of England pretty detached from the Asian communities. Kiran was the only Indian in her school and realised very early on “real friends chose you for who you are and not because of your race”, this always remained close to Kiran’s heart, allowing her to build and progress within networks regardless of racial factors. The hard working Indian ethic worked too! The future Kiran has executed her dreams within music and continues to develop and grow in this arena, but remaining true to her entrepreneurial gene she is also pursuing her 2 other passions – food and fashion. Kiran is launching a new tantalising table sauce – Banging Bhangra Sauce. It’s a tamarind, roasted cumin and chilli based sauce which she describes as “The Indian Ketchup”. It is the first of many food products under the new “Bangin” range. She is also launching her very own fashion label. She says its early days on this project but she can’t wait to finish the first collection. Watch this space! Follow Kiran’s journey on Twitter: @KIKITkiran

Nikesh Mehta - life in the diplo m

atic service

The Foreign and Commonwealth office is calling for more people from Asian backgrounds to consider a career in the Diplomatic Service. There are many high achieving British Asians working in the foreign office but the overall numbers are not representative of society, especially at the most senior levels. In an effort to put this right, over 70 diplomats from a diverse range of backgrounds will visit 30 Universities around the country to talk about their experiences and the opportunities that serving the UK at home and around the world can offer. This is the second year the Foreign Office has run this programme, following the success of last year’s programme where over 90% of students from Black and Ethnic minority backgrounds surveyed said they would apply to the Foreign Office as a result of the presentation. Nikesh Mehta, a British diplomat currently servings at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur was instrumental in the development of this programme and is one of the office’s biggest champions of diversity. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2014 for Services to British Foreign Policy, British interests in Malaysia and to Promoting Diversity. After completing a Masters in Chemistry at UCL no one would naturally predict a career in the foreign office travelling the globe working on international relations. Well this is exactly what Nikesh Mehta undertook.

26

Nikesh is said to be inspired by the culture shock his students experienced whilst he was teaching in rural Japan. After this chapter Nikesh was motivated to join the United Kingdom Foreign Office in 2002, where his first post saw him based in Basrah, southern Iraq, as a Political officer during the post war period with the aims to promote national interests and protect innocent civilians.

removed from their own homes into Internationally Displaced Person camps. The connotations of this placement were very personal for Nikesh, as his mother had been exiled from Uganda in 1972 due to Idi Amin’s ruling. As a member of the British High Commission in Malaysia, Nikesh welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Kuala Lumpar. More recently Nikesh has served the Foreign Office’s Counter Terrorism Department and is presently the Head of Guantanamo. How would you describe a typical day of a diplomat in the UK foreign office? I’m going to refute that question as no 2 days as a diplomat are the same, for instance I could be lobbying the UN with regards to a situation in Syria one day and the next I could be arranging a visit for a member of the royal family Why after completing a chemistry masters and starting a teaching career, did you decide to embark on a career with the foreign office? I couldn’t see myself in a white coat carrying out research in a laboratory following a PhD. It was actually the teaching opportunity in Japan which inspired me. It was truly an eye opening opportunity to experience rural Japan. Have you ever felt subject to conflict in regards to situations/ placements which you have been placed within (i.e. a clash against your personal morals)?

Have you experienced any negativity from peers, family or friends as a direct result of your position? There was an intake of breath when I announced that I was going to work for the foreign office, much of my extended family felt uncomfortable with the thought of working for former colonial masters. But I do believe that this belief comes from a lack of knowledge, as my immediate family was incredibly supportive and 90% of the response has been positive. I have also been in the situations in where I am with a white colleague and people don’t expect me to be the British ambassador, but that’s life. Favourite quote? ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’ Maha Author: Waheeda Ratyal A former Member of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament in Staffordshire, Waheeda is passionate about politics and aspires to build a career within this sector. @WaheedaRatyal

Well you can be that person to someone else out there, whether it’s speaking in schools, getting involved in charities or tweeting to your followers, and say “if I can do it then so can you”. Cameron also paid tribute to the increasing number of Asian politicians saying “One day I want to hear that title ‘Prime Minister’ followed by a British Asian name.” Although he joked that not for a few more years. spot from Malala Yousafzai, in the annual listing of the 101 most powerful and influential Asians living in the UK. Quite simply, with his seat at the cabinet table, he is the only Asian voice at the heart of the Government’s most senior decision making process. He says: “Culture is more than a privilege. It’s at the core of who we are and how we define ourselves. If you’re not engaged with our cultural life, you’re not engaged with our national life. And in 2014, too many Britons are culturally disenfranchised.” The top ten of the Power List alone sees some distinguished names across different sectors including media and entertainment, politics and business. Last year’s number one, Malala Yousafzai moves down from the leading spot in favour of Mr Javid. Interestingly this year’s top 10 features a total of five leading politicians including Labour MPs Keith Vaz and Sadiq Khan at numbers 3 and 7, and Tory MPs Priti Patel and Shailesh Vara at numbers 6 and 9 respectively. Representing the business and finance industry, Lakshmi Mittal and the Hinduja brothers remain within the top 10, alongside One Direction star, Zayn Malik at number 10. 5 1 0 2 s n o i t c i d e r P Numerology n r u t a S f o r a e Y e h T Introduction to Numerology: Numerology is the study of numbers. Like Astrology, numerology works on the principal of the impact that the planets have on human lives. Basic Principles of Numerology: Each letter of the alphabet and hence your name has a certain value, the sum total of this should be in harmony with your date of birth to have smoother sailing in life. The other important factor to be borne in mind is the fact that planets have influence over the life of a person. A number denotes each planet too i.e. the Sun is No.1, the Moon is No.2, Jupiter by No.3 etc… Numerology and Bollywood Renowned for their skills in numerology are the Jumaani’s, the famous Sanjay B Jumaani and Swetta Jumaani have introduced a new kind of number game in Bollywood. Whenever one sees a miss spelt title or name (Eg. pyaar), the only thing that comes to mind is “looks like a Jumaani job”. We caught up with the Swetta Jumaani for her predictions on the year ahead

34

As the year 2014 draws to a close, we look forward to welcome 2015 with hopes of a better and peaceful year; the incoming year 2015 totals www.AsiansUK.com

up to the number 8 (2+0+1+5=8). This number is ruled by the planet Saturn. Unlucky for some 8 is regarded as an unlucky number hence Saturn is certain to cause unnecessary delays and misfortunes, but there is a flip side. Saturn teaches us that life is not always a bed of roses; it places certain hurdles in our path so that we learn patience and have the determination to reach our goals. This helps to enhance our personality; as when Saturn gives, it gives in abundance. All numbers will not be adversely affected by the year; those born under the numbers 1, 3, 5 and 6 can expect to have a smoother sailing.

Tips to avoid bad luck By using ones lucky numbers, colours and a fortunate name one can avoid a lot of problems connected to the number 8. The colour to be avoided especially this year is black, as this tends to bring misfortune and hurdles in one’s life, instead to reduce the influence of Saturn this year, we should use all shades of blue, this would help us to have a better year. Also, yes this year equals to the number 8 however, if we make a habit of writing ’15 instead of 2015, there is every possibility of having a better year as 1+5 = 6 which is a lucky number for all. Investment predictions This year there will be a great deal of fluctuations in the stock market so it would not be advisable to invest too much in this, instead the place to invest would be real estate, land, mining, oil, liquids, wood and all things coming from the earth. Also great progress in science and technology is indicated this year. We may be in for a poor start January 2015 could be a troublesome month (I hope I am wrong here), firstly the year equals to 8, the month of January too is ruled by 8, again all dates

such as 8th, 17th and 26th in Jan add up to the number 8 e.g. 26 + 01 + 2015 = 17 and 1+7=8, such dates usually bring misfortunes. On the brighter side, people will tend to more practical in 2015 and the coming general elections would see a government that will be beneficial to the UK come to power. Goodluck Dates in 2015 All those born on the 4th, 8th, 13th, 17th, 22nd, 26th, or 31st of any month, (especially if born between Dec 23 and Feb 19 which is the period of Saturn) are affected by this planet. My sincere advice to such people is to do their best to avoid starting any important work on dates that add up to the numbers 4 and 8. I would advice them instead to use the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 6 and all its series, also try to increase contact with people born on the 1, 3, 5 and 6 series. Basically everything must be balanced; the sun comes up and the moon goes down. In the same manner if the numbers are not correct there will be an imbalance and things will not go right.

Katrina Kaif’s Secret Weapon British Asian Katrina Kaif is one of the most highly demanded actresses within Bollywood; she’s recognised for her hard work as well as having the body of a goddess. Her stunts within the song Kamli (Dhoom 3) would be difficult to rival by any professional gymnast and her exotic belly dance for the title number ‘Chikni Chameli’ certainly shows she knows how to move that body. As we’re all keen to look the part and get into shape with the New Year the AsiansUK team has gone directly to Katrina Kaif and her international trainer her secret weapon Reza Katani. 36 www.AsiansUK.com

Be under no pretence that her figure or flexibility is a natural god given gift! To achieve such a level of power and flexibility requires commitment and good old hard work. Reza comments that working with Katrina is no easy feat, “before a shoot she will be given clear guidelines as to requirements which include; weight, level of exposure and postures required. We have a time frame to ensure these targets are met, this often means Katrina train’s like a machine.” Reza continues “sometimes Katrina’s training regime is so intense that she is completely physically exhausted and you can clearly see she has no physical strength but continues solely with the power of her mind”

Katrina adds “Reza’s approach is tough and I always prefer strength training above cardio. Training with Reza for Dhoom3 was amazing; his positive attitude and mental determination gets the job done. He pushes me to the extreme and always varies the exercise so I’m never bored. He believes we as women are strong so he doesn’t tolerate any whining or excuses. What we achieved in Dhoom3 was what I wanted and we worked hard at it.” Perhaps one of the most important

www.AsiansUK.com

37

factors to Katrina’s success is her mind-set, Reza shares “Katrina is her own best critic and strives for nothing less than perfection; embracing very intensive training with little motivation. She would often complete a long shoot and send me a text saying ‘finished on my way back, see you in an hour’, this would give her time to have a quick change and grab a snack before going full force into a training session”

How to get achieve a Body like Katrina: Reza shares Katrina’s training regime with AsiansUK.

Katrina’s Diet As we all know diet must compliment any physical exercise to achieve the desired result. So we asked Katrina about her daily intake.

Length of training: At least 2-3 hours at a day

Particularly whilst training Katrina states her diet must be very clean. On the whole she would start her day with a bowl of porridge and that would be her total carbs intake for that day; if it was going to be a long day of shoots she would increase her carb intake by opting for a breakfast of omelette (egg whites only) and a slice of granary bread (not buttered). For the rest of the day she enjoys regular 3 hourly high protein meals; as fish is one of Katrina’s favourite foods she has a great deal of this with fresh vegetables. Katrina also adds “eating healthy is a choice; of course sometimes you have a pizza, a dessert or whatever you fancy, but if in general you aim to eat sensibly and healthy you will feel and look better. I would not be happy if i sat all day eating junk food, and i don’t think my body would like it either; your body is one thing you have to live with your entire life so you might as well treat it well. In England you have so many delicious healthy eating choices available that there really is no excuse for eating junk on a regular basis”

38

Reza adds “diet is key, regular high protein meals will ensure your metabolism continues to work throughout the day.” Reza also stresses that diet can aid weight loss but to achieve a particular look, i.e. round bottom the body needs to be sculptured accordingly and this can only be done by focused functional training.

www.AsiansUK.com

Structure of Training: For a training regime to work well it must be based on functionality. I work with Katrina to ensure we focus on movements the body can do naturally i.e. step-ups, burpees etc… With ongoing repetition these vastly improves cardio and muscle strength, whilst ensuring a longer and lasting result than weights alone. To be honest our weight training is kept to a minimum. Park View Health Club Previously a trained sports therapist based in London Reza has set up his own gym - Park View Health Club within London and is now set to open its second branch. Passionate about fitness Reza aims to inform and inspire others. To him it is fundamental to work the body naturally and he feels that it is possible for anyone to train and sculpture their body as required. Reza is so confident in his training regime that he is offering all clients an unbelievable promise “if he does not transform your body in 10 days he’ll give you your money back” As Katrina spends a great deal of time in India, Reza has found video training works very well and this is a further area which he is currently looking into. Before we leave Katrina and Reza they want to share one of their functional exercises with you – give it a go! Squats – This is one of the most natural movements for our bodies as we are all constantly standing up and

sitting down. Pull up a chair – now keeping you back straight go down as if to sit, and just as your bottom touches the chair you go back up. Keep doing this until your legs burn (repetition to a time or number is not as effective as we’re all different, so go for as long as you can!). Have a break 30 or 60 seconds; the shorter the break the more intensive the cardio and repeat.

e l y t s e f i l & h t l The decline of Hea Just in case this particular epicurean revelation passed you by, we’ve got some news. Forget everything you were brought up to believe, because one of the key ways in which millions of Britons strive to achieve the new recommended ten pieces of fruit and veg per day is no longer considered particularly good for you.

healthy juices

Thanks to the phenomenally high levels of sugar, and the effect of pulping on fruit, orange juice and just about every other type of fruit drink should no s longer be part of your daily diet. Indeed, it may pack a vitamin punch, but drinking these refreshing bottles and cartons as a means of staying healthy isn’t going to work. But don’t just take our word for it. Across the world concerns have never been higher about the sheer volume of sugar now being consumed, and its potential impact on our bodies. During the process of fruit being juiced the sugar levels actually increase even if the label says nothing has been added, meaning you’re far better off with an actual apple than its admittedly tasty, sharp and ever-popular liquid by-product. The same goes for any type of fruit you’d care to suggest. It’s not good news for the drinks industry, already battling with the devillike image those once-friendly and wholesome soft drinks companies have earned themselves. And it’s not good for anyone with a fridge full of fruit juice, although going cold turkey isn’t the only means of successfully reducing how much harm these drinks are doing to your health. Experts also suggest diluting the juice with water, which would have been seen as sacrilege by many just a decade or two ago (this isn’t squash, after all), but these days is fast becoming the modus for people who can’t or won’t give up altogether.

5 Tips to Stay Healthy for Entrepreneurs Meetings, deadlines, travelling and numerous other things in a busy entrepreneur’s life can be stressful. Although stress plays a pivotal role in motivating us, it can also cause a great hindrance on the body and mind. This can then affect our overall health which can lead to poor job performance. Your body is of extreme value and without good health you would not be able to work to your best capacity. Likewise the health of your mind can either help or hinder intellectual business matters. Taking care of your physical body and your mental wellbeing will provide you with the energy to undertake the activities in your profession to your highest potential. Here are my five tips to help improve one of your greatest business assets…your health! Tip 1 – Find an Exercise Regime You Enjoy Keeping fit can sometimes feel like a chore. After a hard day’s work the last thing you want to do is work on a strict exercise regime. Therefore I would suggest finding a form that you enjoy. The choice is endless from going to the gym, yoga classes, dance classes or

martial arts. Tip 2 – De-Clutter the Mind When you have your own business no doubt you will have a hundred and one things on your mind which can make it hard to switch of after a long day. Techniques such as meditation can help to bring a sense of inner calm. This will not only help your business but will also allow you to enjoy your personal and social life too. Tip 3 – Find Time to Relax Relaxation techniques, a massage or even 20 minutes in the sauna or steam room can have you feeling energised and ready to embrace any challenge that is thrown at you. A good relaxation allows all the cells in the body to repair and release tension caught up in the muscles. It is in this sense of release that new energy can then replenish the body. Tip 4 – Follow a Healthy Diet Eating the right food can give you the fuel you need to succeed in life. Power foods such as fresh vegetables, nuts and even fresh fish give you the energy

to keep going during the day. There are lots of quick and easy recipes which can help you avoid slaving over the cooker. Tip 5 – Take a Power Nap Nowadays the internet allows us to to work at any hour of the day. Therefore when we haven’t had a full nights rest, it can leave us feeling tired or reaching for the coffee to keep going! Instead of fighting the sleep a quick ten minute power nap can leave you feeling more alert and engaged. Jaina Mistry Twitter: @yogawithjaina www.yogawithjaina.com

Enjoy Smile and Live with Aesthetic DENTISTRY What do Priyanka Chopra, Ashwariya Rai , Prietty Zinta, Demi Moore, Tom Crusie and many more Bollywood/ Hollywood Stars have in common. Yes you guessed it they have had some form of cosmetic Dentistry to enhance their smiles. The term Cosmetic Dentistry has evolved to Aesthetic Dentistry over the last few years. The term cosmetic relates purely to an improved appearance, while aesthetic is a more holistic term this new approach in enhancing ones smile helps provide a more natural, minimally invasive and longer lasting results. Aesthetic dentistry also ensures that the face, muscles and jaw joint are taken into consideration, which will help improve longevity of any treatment provided. This will provide a personalised smile improvement Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Teeth whitening This is the most cost effective and least invasive procedure to improve your smile. The colour of the teeth can improve by up to 10 shades in a matter of hours or days. A specially formulated peroxide gel is applied to the teeth either in the surgery or at home which will gradually improve the colour of the teeth Professional tooth whitening must be carried out at a dental practice. There are too many beauticians and hairdressers that are providing this treatment form. Unregulated tooth whitening is dangerous and some of the formulations which are applied to the teeth can irreversibly damage teeth forever — don’t whiten your teeth in any place except a dental practice or you may be sorry.

Dental Veneers sometimes called Porcelain Veneers or

www.AsiansUK.com

Porcelain Laminates are thin shells of porcelain, which are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. Veneers are ideal for teeth that are discoloured, chipped, crowded or misshapen and can give a perfect natural looking smile. The procedure can be completed in a relatively short period of time Dental Implants Dental implants are small posts made from a special material called titanium. Once the implant is carefully placed into the patient’s mouth it acts as a new root to which a new tooth can be fixed. With the newest implants a whole set of teeth can be replaced in one day!!!!! Dental Implants can act, look and feel just like natural teeth. Cosmetic Dental Bonding The process involves use of special material called composite, a mouldable paste that can fill cavities, replace metal fillings, repair broken or chipped teeth, close gaps between teeth, reshape teeth and create immediate veneers that fit over teeth. Dental composite can match your own teeth perfectly and provides a superior result when compared to amalgam or silver fillings, which can be unsightly in an otherwise attractive smile. Aesthetic Crowns A crown is a restoration that covers the entire tooth. This allows the tooth or teeth restored to have their colour, shape, size and position altered. The newest crowns are made of porcelain, which avoid that unsightly black line sometimes seen at the gum margin of traditional crowns Dental Bridge As the name suggests crowns can be joined together to ‘bridge’ or replace missing teeth. The newest materials

are very strong allowing a whole upper or lower set of teeth to be replaced in a day! Gum Treatment There is no use building a lovely set of teeth on poor foundations. The dental therapist/hygienist is integral in improving and maintaining your existing or new smile. The position of the gums can be altered by several procedures to allow a more symmetrical smile. Some patients who suffer from gum recession can have these roots covered with gum grafting Cosmetic Braces Out with the metal braces and in with new clear or ceramic brackets. Cosmetic fixed braces can alter straighten teeth in a much shorter period of time without the need to extract teeth. Invisalign braces use a clear gum shield to help move teeth into the correct position. Invisalign removes the need for any types of brackets on the teeth Lastly Inman Aligners are removable braces which can move teeth in a matter of months—ideal when correcting crooked upper/lower anterior front teeth Smile Makeover A smile makeover is where a combination of the aforementioned procedures are utilised to improve the appearance of your smile. This approach can help ensure the ideal result can be achieved providing a personalised, holistic and individualised smile of Oral Hygiene

It is essential that regular visits to the Dental Hygienist are made in order to maintain the health and appearance of the treated teeth. The Dental Hygienist will deliver professional oral hygiene treatments for the patient; provide oral health education and instruction in maintaining that perfect smile!!

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost? The issue of cost crops up on a regular basis but nevertheless, it is an important one. This is particularly the case in the current economic situation where people are looking at affordable ways of improving their appearance. The cost of a procedure depends upon a variety of factors such as the skill and experience of the dentist, the location of the clinic, the materials used and the duration of the treatment. The cost increases the more treatments you require As a rough guide you can expect to pay the following:

EE

Teeth whitening: £300 to £1,200 Dental Veneers: £600 to £1,500/£2,000 per tooth Dental implants: £1,200 to £2,500/£3,000 Cosmetic dental bonding: £225 to £1,000 Crowns: £600 to £1,500/£2,000 per crown Gum contouring: £150- 800 per tooth Smile Makeover— from £1,000 to £20,000 for a new set of teeth

Are Diamonds The New Gold? Who better to ask than diamond expert and luxury online diamond jewellery brand, Vashi.com, founder Mr Vashi Dominguez. Celebrity jeweller Vashi provides expert commentary on all things pertaining to the diamond industry and regularly appears on TV to offer valuations on current affairs and celebrity news. He is also a consecutive entrepreneur with 14 years successful experience in building and running profitable businesses across different verticals within wholesale, retail and ecommerce. He scaled his previous diamond wholesale company from formation to a £40m turnover in three years and since launching Vashi.com, he has turned over a profit of £10 million.

“” The value of a diamond is increasingly on the rise

At their Annual Diamond Party in November, Vashi Dominguez gifted over £150,000 worth of diamond jewellery! A special VIP gifting room at the Aladdin Cave was set up for celebrities to pick out their favourite gems. Vashi was also behind Cheryl Fernandez-Versini’s stunning £1 million jewellery on X Factor and Rita Ora’s glamorous accessories worn to the GQ Men of the Year Awards.

“” highly regarded by consumers as more fashionable.

Vashi talks diamonds with AsiansUK Why are diamonds gaining so much popularity amongst Asians? I believe this boils down to two factors. Firstly there has been a growing demand in Asia practically; with leading retailers offering excellent rates on buy-backs. More people are keen on purchasing diamonds rather than gold jewellery for the simple reason that it offers a greater investment opportunity. The value of a diamond is increasingly on the rise with an estimated 6% growth by 2020. Secondly and quite noticeably diamonds over the years have become a popular and sought after statement piece of jewellery. Its status is highly regarded by consumers as more fashionable. What’s your take on gold? Gold has retained a significant and well respected value over the years. Taking into account its favourable sentiment (as an investment), gold has continued to command long term value, as a reliable and trusted asset. However profit margins on pure gold have withered after the government introduced a chain of actions to cut dollars spent on imports, in its attempts to close the current deficit. Gold’s profitability will decrease even more; this will inevitably lessen its appeal (investment wise). Do you feel that celebrity endorsement of diamonds is spearheading the craze? Absolutely! A growing interest amongst Hollywood A-Listers and royalty for diamonds and fancy coloured stones has definitely made these precious jewels a desired piece. Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé,

“” Gold’s profitability will decrease even more

Jennifer Lopez and Kate Middleton’s engagement rings have all sparked an enormous interest in diamond jewellery and a huge demand from consumers; making diamonds a must-have jewel accessory.

h s i n a b Time to ! r i a h d e unwant For years my dark body hair is a never-ending battle! Endless hours of my time are spent trying to rid myself of it, only to have it reappear in what seems to be an instance. Then I have the added issues of ingrown hairs, rashes etc. etc… Over the years I’ve tried it all waxing – including home-made desi wax, shaving, epilating and electrolysis - without any longterm success. Of late I’ve heard a many a singing and dancing review regarding laser hair removal, often described as the most effective form of hair removal. Therefore when the opportunity to trial the new Philips Lumea Precision Plus – an innovate Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) depilation solution - came up I leaped at it, eager to discover first-hand whether this was as effective as mentioned or whether it would equate to nothing more than marketing hype.

“” Far too easy, no messy wax, no rash, and no discomfort – could it actually be so simple?

I unpack my Lumea Precision Plus from its sophisticated packaging - fresh and inviting. To my delight it was cordless, lightweight and comfortably held. Apprehensive to say the least, I gave it a go. I shave the areas to be treated, select my setting according to my skin tone; I would say I have an average to fair Asian skin tone so I interchange between settings 3 / 4 – in total you have 5 setting to select from, 5 for the lightest skin tone and 1 for the darkest, very straight forward. I grab a drink and tune into Apprentice, place my Philips Lumea Plus on the area to be

treated and press the button which gives an instantaneous flash, pretty much like a camera taking a picture - that’s it, I then glide it to the next patch. This is feeling rather surreal and far too easy, no messy wax, no rash, and no discomfort – could it actually be so simple? So far I’m impressed! Having dense black hair I was apprehensive about shaving,

“”

My body hair was actually minimising, my hair truly began shedding leaving my skin smoother than ever before.

particularly as the elders had often said, ‘never shave’, it will make you hair thicker and coarse; however after using the Philips Lumea Precision Plus I was astonished. The manual mentions you will see results following the second or third treatment, but I experienced a significant change after one use. My re-growth was delayed, much finer with no ingrown hairs, I also had small patches where I had no re-growth. Yes, all this after one treatment. I continued using the Lumea Precision Plus after two-week intervals, as instructed. To my amazement my body hair was actually minimising, my hair truly began shedding leaving my skin smoother than ever before. It does state the darker the hair the faster the results, hence surely this is the perfect solution for Asians as generally we have dark hair. For me the Lumea Precision Plus has been a life changing solution ridding me of unwanted hair.

I highly recommend you grab one too! The Philips Lumea Precision Plus is available at John Lewis, Amazon and selected electrical beauty

Hair Transplants – The Case Study The last issue AsiansUK introduced Hair Transplants which caused an influx of emails requesting further details, so we’ve called upon Dr Bhatty once again and followed one of his patients through the journey. Patient: Tashin Age: 31 Concern: Over the last 6 years Tashin, has become increasing conscious of his receding hair line. Now his front and central sections of his head have very little hair. . Consultation: He attended an initial consultation with Mr Bhatty at one of the clinics of leading cosmetic surgery group Transform, Dr Bhatty advised Tashin to opt for the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) as this would be the most effective manner to treat large areas of hair loss and obtain maximum coverage; FUT involves harvesting a strip of hair from the back of the head and employing the hair follicles where needed. Due to the expertise of Dr Bhatty not only was he going to aim to give Tanish a fuller head of hair but he would also mimic his original hair growth patterns to ensure a natural look. A date was set and after a pre-op assessment, Tanish was all set to go.

44

The Procedure: Tanish arrived early and was greeted by a friendly and relaxed environment. He settled into his room and shortly after was taken to theatre. As the procedure is carried out under medication all he remembered was a vague conversation with the nurse about his work plans and some

slight movements on his head. The complete procedure took 6 hours with a break for a quick snack. Post-Surgery: Tanish felt groggy as you do but no real pain; there was a gentle bandage around his head and shortly after returned home, armed with pain killers, antibiotics and further medication recommended by Dr Bhatty - ‘Finasteride 2.5ml daily’ which would thicken existing hair and encourage as well strengthen regrowth (also available from www.meds4all.co.uk). Day 1: Tanish started to feel a little pain and soreness; he took his pain killers as instructed, which helped ease this. His head looked sore and swollen. Tanish spent the day in bed, resting. Day 2: Tanish mentions the pain had eased considerably and he was back on his feet but taking it easy as recommended for the initial 48 hours. He had removed his bandage and chose to wear a cap to hide the top of his head where the incisions had been

made; he actually looked his usual self. Once the cap was removed we could see the additional hair. Day 3: Swelling was literally unnoticeable and Tanish was in virtually no pain. Day 4: Tanish washed his hair very gently with mild baby shampoo, he felt much fresher and hair coverage looked fuller immediately. Day 5 – 7: Maintained gentle wash and took it easy, nothing too strenuous. Day 7: Scabs began forming where the incisions were made, throughout the next week these slowly came away leaving Tanish’s hair looking fuller and natural as though the clock had been turned back. He was delighted with the end result and it was as Mr Bhatty had originally explained. However, there is a downside, Tanish mentions that 4 weeks post procedure the inserted hair begins to fall out and also causes some of the surrounding hair to fall out, this is normal and an anticipated result of the shock caused by the incisions. Do not fear after week 10 - 12 the hair starts growing back and this time it’s here to stay.

! t n u o c s n o i s s e r p m i t Fellas: Firs Women spend a great deal of time deciding what to wear on a day-to-day basis, taking into account what suits them and what is “so last year”. Most men, on the other hand, tend throw any old thing on. You don’t have to be a metrosexual to look good, but it helps… Men love science, right? So, know that there is scientific evidence to support the idea that what you wear really does make a difference in your world. Behavioural scientists warn that a first impression is a strong one. Someone’s evaluation of you takes 30 seconds or

illusions. While vertical stripes draw the eyes up and down helping to establish a thinner body, wide horizontal stripes make the eye move left to right, creating a broadening effect. That’s a nice way of saying you could look as wide as a bus.

“”

Men, remember dressing well will reap its rewards. Heavier fabrics give the impression of a heavier body. Culprits include tweed, wool suits and bulky jumpers. Light to medium weight fabrics, such as cotton, twill and linen, visually remove pounds. Green, blue, and violet are associated with water, sky and foliage. Clothing plays a huge role in the first impression, especially at job interviews or meeting the in-laws or meeting a potential mate. Think of clothes like your peacock feathers. Red, orange, and yellow are associated with fire and the sun. They psychologically suggest emotion, energy and warmth while optically appearing larger. That’s something to remember if you want to slim down rather than beef up. Colours may also influence the behaviour and moods of those you are trying to impress, both positively and negatively. Colours create feelings and emotions, which is why you would never wear a sunny yellow shirt to a funeral, opting instead for solemn tones. The simple act of choosing the colour of a tie could speak volumes about you.

Here are some of the moods and emotions associated with colours: RED: Not for the shy and retiring type. Dominance, power, attention, sexual energy, determination, passion, persistence, excitement and strength. PINK: Yes, men can wear pink too! Upbeat, good health, calming, friendly, compassionate and faithful. ORANGE: Very “now”. Happy, courageous, successful, enthusiastic, bold, adventuresome, friendly, warm, informal and welcoming. BROWN: Salt of the earth type. Informal, reliable, approachable, relaxed, stable, and earthy. YELLOW: A positive colour. Alert, optimistic, stimulating, enthusiastic, playful, cheerful, communicative, expressive and intelligent. GREEN: Lucky for some. Relaxing, compassionate, prosperous, prestigious, growth, vitality, harmony and efficiency. TURQUOISE: Like a dip in the ocean. Refreshing, cool, imaginative, innovative and youthful. BLUE: For the blue-bloodied type. Knowledgeable, trustworthy, serious, responsible, social stature, caring, good health, tranquil, intuitive, calm, honest, loyal and showing integrity. LIGHT BLUE: Perfect for romance. Peaceful, sincere and affectionate. PURPLE: The prince of colours. Spiritual, passionate, visionary, regal, respected, dignified and luxurious. LAVENDER: For sexy nights in. Romantic, imaginative and associated with fantasy. BLACK: Not just for funerals. Elegance, authority, dignity, sophistication, seductiveness and mystery. WHITE: The colour of angels. Virtue, cleanliness and status.

Dispatches from Delhi:

Indian Fashion Trend Watch The recently hosted Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 in Delhi presented 124 new and established designers. Top trends included whites and brights which contrasted with the more earthy tones selected by certain designers such as Ashish N Soni and Rajesh Pratap Singh; showcasing beautiful natural indigo tones in their collections. Tangy flowing silhouettes caused a stir at Tarun Tahiliani who collaborated with the acclaimed British miniature artists, the Singh Twins for his prints. Bling takes a backseat next season as heavy thread embroidery whether vintage inspired or contemporary makes its mark giving a fresh new look. By: Shazia Saleem @ShaziaSaleemLDN

Omar Mansoor – The London based couturier is known for his intricate couture featuring his signature embellishments and classic cuts. It’s always the way with Omar that his signature sequinned, embellished pieces make an appearance down the catwalk, which however, is the biggest understatement as this season he came up with a mixture of pattern and silhouette only, featuring Scottish tartan sheath dresses. The dresses are made in tennisdress cuts with Scottish Tartan in six different colour schemes. Credits Photographer: Shahid Malik Models: Amandeep and Anu Hair & Make up: Ayesha Mubarak

Well, if you’re a slave to fashion books and starry secrets for enhancing your style quotient, look no further, we have it all! AsiansUK takes you directly to leading Bollywood icons who share their fashion mantras. Chirpy, bubbly and effervescent best describe Genelia D Souza; her statuesque frame and chiseled face makes her the perfect model to launch a thousand labels. This pretty woman has a strong sense of individual style and distinguishable fashion sense.

“My wardrobe consists of tons of shoes and clothes to match. I prefer to mix and match and team up my wardrobe with interesting well fitted clothes when stepping out of the house. I prefer clothes in white and blue. It’s a crime to wear things just because they are in vogue, so one should wear clothes that suit you, your style and personality. My evening wear consists of little black dress- gowns- fun dresses- pants or skinnies. For me anything elegant or funky would work, suiting my mood. I am a stickler for perfection when it comes to my clothes and my wardrobe. I dress right to feel good all the time. I love Tarun Tahiliani, Raakesh Agarwal, Manish Malhotra, Marc Jacobs and LV designs. I dig comfort and like to shop in Paris, Bangkok and London and of course Mumbai. I am an extremely impulsive and moody shopper. I’d love to sneak into the wardrobes of Madonna, Audrey Hepburn and of course Charlize Theron.”

Bubbly beauty, Deepika Padukone likes to experiment “with floral prints and pastel shades. I would ideally keep the accessories simple with a pair of fun optical frames and a watch. I do love to tie my hair up in a messy ponytail…it’s easy and practical yet stylish.”

For the newly-wed actress and entrepreneur, Dia Mirza being fashionable comes effortlessly and easy, “I like to wear what suits the occasion and mood. It feels great to know that people have recognized that attribute of me but I have not tried to focus or become a style icon. I believe what you wear is a reflection of what you are. It comes from the upbringing you have had and that’s how you keep that in check. For me the basic parameter is whether it will suit the occasion. Designers Shantanu and Nikhil are buddies and I enjoy wearing their clothes as they have great silhouettes. Both designers masterfully combine Indian fabric with western cuts and styles. As for my bridal look, it had to be a balance between traditional and elegant. I did not want bling, or anything too

flashy. My jewellery was a variety of new and also some of my mothers. My prized possessions include a 150 year old Banarasi sari which I inherited from my grandmother. I cannot wear it as it’s very delicate and aged but it’s a spectacular piece. Its rose pink in colour with gold leaves and the banarasi silk is like butter paper with real silver motifs woven, they don’t make any more of those. If I ever have a daughter I would love to hand it down to her.”

fashion The well-endowed Sonakshi Sinha, with her unconventional looks and confident persona, has turned out to be a lucky mascot for her co-stars. Despite the fact that she received some flak for her weight issues, she dispelled it all to emerge into a dainty beauty. The beauty’s journey from flab to fab has not been an easy one as she ditched most of her favourite food, alongside following an intense workout session to stay fit as a fiddle. “I have faced criticism for looks, acting and it is hard to get to this position or getting flak after losing 30 Kgs. I just eat well. I eat small meals every two hours to keep my metabolism going. It has been an emotional struggle and had it been any other girl in my place she would have crumbled. I don’t do roles which require me to be stick thin or size zero. All of India is going back to the roots, so the trends of cinema or the look of a heroine is changing. I have studied fashion for 3 years and gave my best to it. I would work hard till late in the night and stood first with good grades in the fashion school.”

Porcelain beauty, Minissha Lamba gives us an insight into her preferred styles; “My favourite Indian designer is Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. My much-loved international designer is Robertto Cavalli. My luxury brand of choice has got to be Louis Vuitton and I’m besotted with Jimmy Choo shoes. Accessories by Channel are very beautiful and I love to flaunt them. I am a huge Rayban and Police fan. I love to wear Juicy Couture trainers on a day off. I love my faded Levis jeans, my white t-shirts, a pair of stilettos. On a summers day a Laura Ashley dress would be my first choice. To a formal event I like to wear anything that is simple yet elegant, for example, a chic gown along with minimal jewellery. I like anything that is classic and chic. My fashion advice to people would be to be confident in whatever you wear.”

Inspirations Interiors Goodbye minimalism, Scandinavian furniture and utilitarian aesthetics. In their place come opulent, luxurious and lavish interiors guaranteed to set oligarchs hearts aflutter. At the recent interior design shows, where furniture and fabric designers show off new designs that will soon find their ways into homes around the world, talk was of a backlash against the pared down interiors of recent years in favour of rich textures and shiny metallic that throw off the chains of austerity. Lydia Lavelle, interior designer at Accouter Design, comments, “If you look at some of the trends of the past few years, they emerged in a recessionary era. The look was clean but pared back. Nothing was too lavish or extravagant as that just didn’t fit with the zeitgeist. Now that the economy is improving and consumer confidence is returning, people are rejecting that barren Scandinavian look in favour of much more elaborate schemes.”

Trends to look for in 2015 Colours – Green is the colour of 2015 with splashes of teal and brown Textures – Natural textures such as leather, shagreen and fur were in evidence. For that additional luxurious touch, mother of pearl is also making a comeback Wood – Darker woods such as walnut offer a warmer alternative to the pale Scandinavian woods of recent years Metals – The reign of chrome and silver may be coming to an end as gold and bronze take centre stage.

“”

ronze gold and b stage e take centr “I think people are no longer afraid to embrace a bit of maximalism,” continues Lavelle, “We’ve lived for so long with minimalism and characterless hotel chic that people are craving softer lines that have a bit more personality. We’ve been seeing a re-emergence of colour for a while but now there seems to be an explosion. Magnolia walls and limestone bathrooms are starting to feel very dated. Interiors schemes are becoming bolder and individual. Long may that continue!” The first of the new season’s trends will hit shops at the end of this year with most designers releasing new fabrics and furniture collections. There is often a waiting list for the most covetable items so place orders early. Lydia Lavelle is a senior interior designer at Accouter Design. She holds a certificate in interior design from KLC. Lydia’s style veers towards the contemporary and creates stylish interiors that complement the architectural style of the building. www.accoutergroup.com @AccounterDesign

Wellness Holidays: e m o H k c a B e m o C d e t a n e v u j e R g n i l e Fe

Wellbeing Escapes specialise in providing their guests healthy holidays and experiences that will transform their lives. They are known as the UK’s leading spa holiday and wellness experts. Stella Photi, the Founder of Wellbeing Escapes, tells us the difference between a usual holiday and a wellness vacations. What is wellness holiday? How many times have you come back from a holiday feeling exhausted and wishing you could have another holiday? The trend for healthy holidays is well and truly on the rise, as people seek to balance their stressful lives with holidays that will build them up rather than burn them out. The key is that having a healthy holiday is enjoyable and not the Spartan like experience some people still think it is – you eat delicious healthy food, take part in uplifting and energising activities and get time to really relax on both a physical and mental level. The upside is that you usually come back looking fantastic too!

58 www.AsiansUK.com

What makes a wellness resort different to a hotel with a Spa? Many hotels these days have a ‘spa’ on the premises. And whilst there are many benefits to relaxing in saunas and steam rooms, these places are very different to wellness resorts. Wellness resorts offer a much more immersive experience designed to enhance your whole wellbeing. They often have specific, all-inclusive programmes, picked to suit your particular health goals or concerns. Expect dietary guidance, a team of expert fitness activities, incredibly healthy spa cuisine, life-coaching, classes, and a range of body and beauty treatments in beautiful and often exotic locations. Therapists at wellness resorts are carefully vetted and trained so their treatments are of the highest quality. What are the different types of wellness holidays and how do I pick one? It’s a great question as the term ‘wellness holidays’ can mean different things to different people so whether you’re trying your first massage or going for a full-on detox, it’s just a case

of finding what’s right for you. At first people might just want to try a wellness break so we offer ‘wellbeing boosters’ that allow people to understand more about how a wellbeing break can improve their health with some pampering, healthy food and relaxation. But wellness holidays also run the full gamut to people seeking 14 night detox or weight loss escapes in dedicated health spas in order to properly re-set their systems. It depends on your level of experience and what you want to achieve from your holidays. What are the hottest and trendiest destinations in the world these days? Turkey, Croatia, India, Brazil, Italy and more are all really up and coming trendy destinations for wellness travel. We’ve just discovered an Island in Croatia called Lonsij that has such a perfect climate with sparkling clear water, pine trees and thousands of aromatic herbs. It’s been a closely guarded wellness secret for over 120 years but I predict will be really popular. For more information please visit: www.wellbeingescapes.com

Cities You Simply Have To See Call it a bucket list, or for those less keen to set their mind on macabre things, a rundown of those urban hotspots that are truly essential destinations, we’ve compiled the following selection of metropolises that should be priorities for everyone when planning the next city break.

Paris

a truly The City of Love is anks passionate place. Th ting tric res s law ng ildi to bu in the up n ow thr be what can ris looks central districts, Pa way and feels exactly the of the me So l. wil it pe ho you world the in ts ran tau best res and are here, too, and art oilt for history buffs are sp lleries ga of ms ter in e choic s. um and muse

New York

It’s a cliche, perhaps, but the Big Apple is the best big town on the planet. This is the place that invented the term rubberneckers to highlight the fact that visitors can’t stop looking skywards to take in the marvellous selection of high-rise towers. A city like no other, never sleeping and boasting more culture than you can hope to take in during one trip.

Rome

It’s always surprising for Britons visiting Rome how much value for money it’s possible to find here. In contrast to our own capital, the most expensive destination in the UK, Italy’s number one is actually cheaper than Venice and Florence. In addition, it has the Colosseum, Forum, Vatican City and a ton of other things to see, all of which are priceless.

London

We can’t list the world’s best cities without mentioning the biggest in Britain. In the Tony Blair’s words, it’s the greatest capital on Earth. Noisy, rushed and completely unique, there are more cultural attractions here than the rest of our recommendations combined, so never forget it’s up there with the best short break options.

Budapest

Thanks to the introduction of budget air routes, Budapest has experienced an exponential rise in visitor numbers. Those who do get themselves out here find an unarguably impressive riverfront packed with palaces, parliament buildings and aesthetically well-positioned statues, not to mention a great alternative nightlife.

Hong Kong

Although there have been many more grumbles from this former British enclave since it was handed back to China, don’t let that put you off. One of the most iconic cityscapes in the world nestles in a picturesque harbour, with the whole town alive with exotic smells, imposing monuments and a hyperactive ambience. Definitely an essential destination.

Tommy Sandhu – The Main Man of Showbiz When it comes to Radio presenters various names come to mind, however one stands out by far and for all the right reason; he’s funny, he’s witty, he’s as desi as they come - I’m talking about the BBC Asian Networks very own TOMMY SANDHU! He instantaneously adds the ‘Tommy Effect’ to anything he touches, making it humorous yet informative and captivating, let’s catch up with Tommy . Howdy Tommy Is Tommy your real name or a stage name? Actually, Tommy has been my name since Birth; it’s the name all my family and friend have always used to call to me. I do have a Punjabi name it’s Navraj, although this is only used by my mum, when I’m in trouble. Where did it all start? I’ve always had a strong passion to perform; I loved entertaining from a young age through school plays and dance performances. I then dabbled as a DJ, playing mainstream music in exclusive clubs and venues within central London, it was here 7 years ago I was spotted by the BBC Asian Network and initially asked to come on board as an entertainment reporter. Also at this time I became the voice over on Blind Date with the much loved Cilla Black, this heightened interest. What’s your Favourite Chocolate Bar? Has to be Wholenut, I do like Galaxy too, however it’s a little rich so happy to share, but wholenut is all for me! Tommy you’re much loved and known for the ‘Tommy effect’ – bundles of energy and humour, is this the real you or is there a more serious Tommy Off Air? Certainly not, I don’t take anything seriously and you know what, the more fun I’m having the better things are. I often tell myself that the BBC will realise one day that I’m full of bakwaas and they’re paying me to have a good time and then I’ll be out – yikes.

Most of us have the Desi Knack of being able to successfully wear more than one hat and you certainly do, you’re the breakfast show presenter for BBC Asian Network; host for leading Asian Concerts including the recent Slam Tour at the O2; host/compere at leading Asian Events, such as the Black Country Business Awards; Gadgets presenter on the BBC Travel show and your also dabbling in entrepreneurial activities, please tell us more? Ah yes, well it’s good to stay busy, keeps me out of trouble. I actually run a production company with a number of partners. We are currently undertaking a project with Sky Living called ‘Britain and Irelands next Model’; we have a project with Jodie Marsh which is ‘Body Marsh’. I also work on TV music - theme songs etc… It’s great when you hear your music used across various platforms and played internationally. And there’s more, I do a little property development and now have a number of property projects underway; one very close to my heart is the renovation project of my home which is almost complete, just waiting on the verdict from the dear Mrs and my son, he’s two years old and rules! There you have it, one of the hottest Asian entertainers is also a successful entrepreneur – thumbs up for Tommy! Join him on twitter: @TommySandhu

Saif Ali

Khan What was the inspiration to work in a comic genre film like Happy Ending which you acted in and produced as well? This was a funny, universal film. I found a comfort level in the storyline. The director Raj DK had written a very nice story, a fun, romcom comedy; he certainly has a great sense of humour. He has made the movie in a different style, focusing on three main characters, the film revolved around the intricacies from their lives with plenty of ego clashes thrown in! Could you relate yourself to a movie like Happy Ending? Oh yes I did relate to my characters! Honestly, there are different kinds of people in this

62 www.AsiansUK.com

world. And most things revolve around circumstances or money. You worked with Govinda for the first time, what chemistry or equation do you share with him? I do not have any equation with Govinda. We are two very different people. I learnt a lot from him in the dance department. He is a lovely guy and a great dancer. We showcased

him as a star. But we had very little interaction otherwise. The funny thing is that we are two different people. Your previous films or home production movie like Go Goa Gone was not very successful. What do you think might have gone wrong? The film Go Goa Gone was less appreciated post interval which is the second part. This was when we introduced zombies; hence we can say that the Indian audiences have not accepted the concept of a zombie. After Omkara, we have not seen you with ace director Vishal Bharadwaj. Why is that so? Only Vishal Bharadwaj would know that I guess.

Any plans of becoming a director in the future? There is no plan as such. There is not much money in being a director. If I stop being a star and do not get any acting offers then I will think of direction. But not at the moment! Being a director can be quite a challenging experience. It’s too much of hard work. Your favourite way to kill time is reading a book. So what are you best reads? I have read Alistair Maclean and others

in the past, however now I am not into heavy reading. I’m currently inclined towards Moby Dick and Don Quixote; books that I missed in my school days! My library at home has a section on science and religion because I like reading about that and am aware of varied theological thoughts. What are the other films that you are working on? There is Phantom which is a great film. I am glad Kabir offered me this film as it will show me in a very different role. Besides this I am also doing movies with Sujoy Ghosh and Reema Katagi. You also have a home production film with Raj DK to look forward to.

Naughty Boy now runs his own production company, Naughty Boy Recordings, and his 2013 smash hit, ‘La La La’, featuring Sam Smith was a global summer sensation, with over 386 million views on YouTube.

Earlier this year he received the Editor’s Award for Rising Star at the 14th annual Asian Achievers Awards. Naughty Boy expresses, “To receive this level of recognition from my peers of fellow Asians is such a privilege. I’m proud of being a British Pakistani and I’m proud to represent the Asian community. I grew up immersed in Bollywood movies, where music, songs and extravagant dance sequences dominate, and that has really influenced the way I

produce music today. Although I’ve worked hard, I’ve been so lucky to have such amazing support from my incredible family and friends. Making music is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and if I can do that while being a positive influence in my community, then that is just the icing on the cake for me.”

When asked what he feels is the key to success for Asian’s within the music industry, he states it is “to showcase your talent not your identity”. Naughty Boy continues, “Don’t make a song and dance about being Asian. I think the minute you do that, you’re basically selling your identity rather than your talent. I think that’s when it can all go wrong. I’ve gone out of my way to only showcase my talent. It’s not about being boxed in, or boxing yourself in.” Twitter: NaughtyBoyMusic Special thanks to London Community Reporters @London_360.

Rishi Rich (MusicbyRR) & Manrina Rekhi

Rishi Rich is arguably the most successful British Asian producer our generation has seen. He propelled Asian music into the mainstream by successfully merging his Punjabi influences with urban and pop music; attracting international artists, such as, Craig David, Mary J Blige, Ricky Martin etc… Rishi is also the man celebrated for shifting out talent to find British Asian music pioneers namely; H Dhami, Juggy D and of course he is the name behind the international music celebrity Jay Sean. Currently signed to Teddy Riley Music Group Rishi is based in Atlanta. His wife Manrina Rekhi; who until recently has not been in the media limelight, is also a lady worthy of admiration. Manrina flourished academically, specialising within cosmetic dentistry to become the first

female dentist for Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Manrina is now widely recognised for making her mark as a British Actress; she debuted in ‘Love You Soniye’, and is also starring in ‘Amar, Akbar & Tony’ with a superb cast including: Nina Wadia, Meera Syal and Rez Kempton. Destined to be together Rishi and Manrina’s families were friends from the onset and although both were aware of each other they never actually spoke in the early years; from his mid-teens Rishi was involved in music and travelled a great deal and Manrina was very busy with her studies. In 2011 they met at a wedding reception, Rishi knew on their first date that Manrina was the one and told her “I’m going to marry you”. Within 6 months they were wed, no

3 years later they are still very much in love. Both their careers have taken new and unexpected turns, each going from strength to strength. Part of their success must be attributed to their mutual love and support to ensure each other’s dreams are fulfilled. They state from leading Asian events such as ‘The Asian Awards’ to international dentistry conferences like the ‘BACD’, “we are there for one another and always ensure we attend together”. Stronger than ever before Rishi’s greatest inspiration rose from RD Burman and Teddy Riley and in yet another strange twist of fate, shortly after the wedding, Teddy Riley sort out Rishi. Teddy explained he was in search for “a prolific producer and felt Rishi may be the one” Rishi renowned for establishing artists has now been signed by Teddy Riley who is recognised for identifying and bringing out extraordinary stars; names include Timbaland, Pharrell and P Diddy. Both Rishi and Manrina decided this was opportunity they could not miss and decided to join Teddy Riley in Atlanta. Rishi is widely recognised for producing music decades ahead of its time and now, with the Teddy Riley Music Group, the sky’s the limit - all we can say for now is #WatchThisSpace! When making this decision Manrina was fully aware that her dentistry qualifications would not stand in Atlanta, however Manrina was ready to take a break from dentistry and she was fully aware of Rishi’s passion for music and knew this was the next step for him to realise his dream. Manrina took a more active role in supporting Rishi’s career and assisted where necessary. A marriage does involve comprise which must be complimented with an understanding of both parties and their desires, holding true to this Rishi dug deeper into Manrina’s heart and reignited her passion for pursing acting. When younger this was not a valid option as Manrina’s family encouraged her to pursue a traditional career, however now circumstances had changed. Rishi was very supportive; clearly Manrina’s resilience and confidence was apparent as an established celebrity dentist and public speaker. Rishi now reciprocated Manrina’s support to ensure she too could realise her dream. Still new on the horizon, Manrina has taken a few acting roles and is now set to appear in the much acclaimed ‘Amar, Akbar and Tony’. The secret to a successful marriage Both Rishi and Manrina are focussed and driven individuals and it is clear speaking to them that they are very much one. Friends have often commented that ‘they were meant for one another’, their affection is visible via social media interactions and whenever they are together; so we must ask what their secret is. Rishi and Manrina both express the importance of ensuring they make time for one another. This was very tricky at first, Rishi’s rock-star lifestyle meant he

had no real routine, he slept and ate as and when. Both worked to adjust daily routines to guarantee they could unwind and share meals together. You often here the phrase ‘everything happens for a reason’ and this change in lifestyle was much overdue for Rishi. Before marriage he had become overweight and hospitalised on stroke alert. With the help of family and friends he introduced balance back into his life and now luckily for the Music scene is in better shape than ever. Manrina told us they “also consciously supported each other, making sure they spend as much time together as possible”, although this did result in added pressure to their already busy lifestyles, their affection and backing of one another pulled them through. After moving to Atlanta, thankfully their perseverance paid off, they still work hard, but life is at much more acceptable pace. The Future Watch This Space: Manrina is carving her way into the celebrity arena. ‘Amar, Akbar and Tony’ is receiving a great deal of media interest and Manrina has already established links with Bollywood. This British Asian actress could very soon be starring in a Bollywood Blockbuster. Also knowing too well the issues resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle, due to experiences with Rishi, Manrina is employing her spare time to share regular health and fitness updates via her Youtube channel HealthbyMR. Have no misconceptions, Manrina certainly has the real person in mind, no fancy equipment; no complicated recipes; she fully comprehends daily life and has the modern person in mind, sharing hints and tips that any of us could build into our lives.

Furthermore, Rishi has always been one to support new talent and was keen to do something to help new artists perfect their craft and showcase their capacities, so in November he released the album ‘The Lost Beats’ via I-tunes which includes a selection of beats that can be used by singers or songwriters to make demo tracks. Rishi and Manrina are enjoying an exceptional journey and have demonstrated that friendship, support and understanding are instrumental to any fruitful relationship. Twitter and Instagram: Rishi Rish - @MusicByRR Manrina Rehki - @ManrinaR

Rishi is soon to release his new album which is set to take us into a new dimension of music; the wait will truly be worthwhile. Within 2015 we will also be introduced to the magic that Rishi and Teddy are producing via a number of their projects.

She is an Asian women worthy of admiration! Yes, Raveena Tandon Thadani! A doting mother of two, a wife, a social worker, a successful Bollywood actress, a national award winner and now receiving adulation for being a television host for ‘Simply Baatein’. Raveena is charismatic yet assertive, smart and an extremely confident lady.

A Meaningful Journey Tell us about your new television show ‘Simply Baatein’ and did you have to do any homework for it? My television show has been really well accepted by people. Someone from t she ministry complimented me on the show. It is not a serious show, but very inspiring and with a message. It is about the victims and how they overcome issues. Yes I had to do my homework; background knowledge is paramount when talking to people about such sensitive issues. Can we expect to see any further Bollywood appearances? Yes, of course. Onir’s film ‘Shab’ is shaping up well and I just completed a schedule. I am doing a friendly appearance in ‘Bombay Velvet’. What’s your favourite festive food/snack? I love Indian sweets and relish them during festivals. I also love the gujrati snacks like khakra, dhokla etc… which are less oily and not deep fried. I make gulab jamuns for my family, they are easy to make and the family loves it too. Festivals are also a time for display, what is festive dressing for you? I almost always end up wearing red particularly for Diwali and Karwa Chauth, it’s like a trademark hue for me. I like wearing traditional attires, but I avoid wearing a sari as it is difficult to move around and manage kids. I prefer to wear

salwar kameez or anarkalis with fine makeup and jewellery for festivals. How do you balance work and personal life, besides working on the set after a hiatus of sorts? I have been around, doing friendly appearances in movies. I did Telugu films too. Recently I was offered a very powerful role in a Kanad film which I had to let go of due to lack of time. Yes, I need to balance time between work and kids. Thankfully, my in-laws are a huge support with the kids as we live with them. Also my parents come around often. I cannot take on too much work as the kids need to be helped with their exams so I have to chalk out my schedule keeping everything in mind. Being realistic, organised and enlisting the support of family ensure I have a good balance. You are glowing and looking extremely fit for a mother of two? Thank you. But I have not been to the gym in 3 months. I try to work out whenever I can and train for two hours when I do. I also watch what I eat; keeping a tab on your diet helps tremendously.

Jaz Dhami Since his debut in 2008 with the smash hit album “Jind Jaan”, Jaswinder Singh Dhami, popularly known as Jaz Dhami, has gone from strength to strength. It seems he is set to redefine Punjabi music trends in UK. From the age of 9 Jaz Dhami’s passion for music was supported by his father, a Bhangra artist of the 1980s. Jaz received musical training from Ustad Ajit Singh Mutlashi Ji for seven years and learned many aspects of Indian classical music. When Professor Hari Dev Ji introduced advanced musical trends within the Bhangra stream in Punjab, Jaz became inspired to follow the culture and heritage.

72

Recognised for many a blockbuster hit including; ‘Tera Mera’, Bari Dera’, ‘Zulfa, and of course ‘High Heels’ www.AsiansUK.com

Taking Bhangra to New Heights

(receiving over 20 million views on YouTube); this year Jaz Dhami teamed up with Steel Banglez to bring us ‘Pasina’. Going from strength to strength Jaz Dhami is set to bring us more illumination with his recent collaboration with hip hop star French Montana. It’s a pleasure to finally meet one of the hottest new age Punjabi singers of the UK. 1. As we all know the British Asian Music Industry is one tough cookie; what made you decide to take the leap? It was a natural progression for me because I studied music from a young age and had this vision. It was all I ever wanted to do and everything I’d worked towards; so it all kind of fell into place after my studies.

2. What was the hardest challenge you have faced within you music career? I’ve been lucky enough to not have faced any crazy challenges – I’ve always tried to keep growing and learning as an artist, that’s a challenge in it-self and an on-going one at that. I’ve learnt a lot about the scene and how to tackle situations through my time in the profession. 3. ‘High Heels’ was an overnight sensation, where did the inspiration for this stem from? The reaction was overwhelming for me, however the journey of the song didn’t happen overnight so it didn’t feel like it was a sudden success, although of course for audiences it was! When Honey and I decided to work together we knew we wanted a unique fun-loving song - that was the foundation. We then spent over

Punjabi is the language that has given me a platform as an artist, something I feel forever grateful for. I love watching educational documentaries on real life situations and anything that makes me think. I love learning new things. 6. Who is your celebrity crush? I don’t really have one I’ve never had one to be honest.

six months choosing the right song, going back and forth over ideas. Once the song was finalized, I really wanted to deliver a video that wasn’t the typical ‘Bhangra’ type of visual; I used mainstream videos as the inspiration. I wanted to switch it up, my team and I searched for the right director and as you can see I went for a video that enhanced the recording and complimented the style of song. 4. Which is your all-time favourite song and why? It’s so hard to say one song because I listen to so many different types of music; if you asked me 5 years ago it was ‘Aaj Mausam’ by Mohammed Rafi. But my alltime favourite song now is ‘Saiyan’ by Kailash Kher. ‘Saiyan’ is just a phenomenal piece of music, soulful voice and I have so many memories joined to it. 5. What else do you enjoy doing besides music?

7. If you had 5 minutes on earth to perform one song to leave a lasting influence, which one would it be and why? It would have to be one of my own songs, ‘Meh Punjabi Boli Ah’ it’s one of my favourite creations. It has a combination of history, powerful lyrics and energetic performance all representing my mother tongue; the language of the Gurus, mighty poets and some of the great artists of the world. Punjabi is the language that has given me a platform as an artist, something I feel forever grateful for. 8. Who is your role-model? It’s so difficult to wither it down to one person because I’ve learnt so much from so many people, but it would have to be my dad. His love for music and what I do just makes me want to give more. 9. What do you have in store for your fans in 2015? A whole load of banging music! Expect a Bollywood collaboration, a traditional bhangra anthem and a mainstream sounding record with American rapper French Montana. Before that though, there’s the single ‘Pasina’, featuring British Rapper Sneakbo, who’s doing big things with his EP just out, Indian rapper Ikka is also on there and its produced by a good friend and amazing producer Steel Banglez.

g n i r o t Mo More power, more dynamic performance, more 911

Porsche has unleashed the second generation of the 911 Carrera GTS, it joins the acclaimed Boxster GTS, Cayman GTS and Panamera GTS in the range of sports cars from Stuttgart. Each of the four new 911 Carrera GTS models – a Coupé and a Cabriolet, available with either rearwheel or all-wheel drive – build on the established core values of the iconic rear-engined 911 by adding further technical features to generate even higher levels of dynamic performance and driving enjoyment. Under the rear engine lid lies an evocative flat-six power unit, tuned to develop 430 hp, an increase of 30 hp over the Carrera S. This is combined with the Sport Chrono package offering dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damper system which lowers the car’s ride height by ten millimetres. Improved efficiency has also led to quicker acceleration and higher top speeds, and Combined fuel consumption figures remain unchanged from the favourable level of the S models. The exteriors of the new 911 Carrera GTS – like other GTS models – differ significantly from the other Carrera models. All versions feature the 911 Carrera 4 body with wide-flared rear wheel arches and a wider track. Also standard are 20-inch diameter alloy

The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS wheels with centre-lock mechanism, painted in an exclusive matt black finish. Accentuating the nose styling are special trim elements and smoked bi-Xenon headlights with the addition of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS). The air intake grille on the rear engine lid features bespoke GTS black trim strips and black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes add to the strong visual identity. Further aural distinction is delivered via the standard sports exhaust system, which delivers an unmistakable GTS sound. The driver and front passenger sit in an exclusive Alcantara interior with leather-trimmed sport seats. The centre seat panels are finished in Alcantara, as on the other Porsche GTS models. With the addition of these new top models, the 911 Carrera range now consists of 12 sports cars at three power levels, as Coupés and Cabriolets, and in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configuration. The new 911 Carrera GTS models are available to order from Porsche Centres.

g n i r o t Mo I could save over £1500 per year on fuel alone compared to my much loved BMW.

The rise in popularity of the Audi range amongst British Asian drivers has been phenomenal over the last few years. The Audi is the car of choice for the young British Asian generation and is increasingly seen driven by the Bollywood star. I decided to take a closer look to see what all the fuss was about. Nottingham Audi dealership arranged for me to drive the new Audi A7 Sportback and the extremely luxurious Audi A8 Executive Sport. I was all set to become the Asian Jamil Clarkson of the motoring world. I am not going to bore you with techy stuff i.e. how fast it goes? (Although, when performance was needed they do pack a punch as both do 0-60mph in less than 6 seconds). I wanted to know, what I get for my money; what is cost to run; comfort; and can I keep my kids and occasional fussy Aunties happy on long journeys.

76

Fuel & Economy Can you believe it, I did 46mpg with the A7 just doing the school runs and weekly errands, which is twice as much as I get in my current Lexus. On a long run the A8 came up tops with 53 mpg; very impressive for a 3.0litre car. This was enough to make me want an Audi on the spot. Both cars being diesel, I was pleasantly impressed with the quietness of the engine, the real grunt when you put your foot down. I worked out that I could save www.AsiansUK.com

A is for Audi

over £1500 per year on fuel alone compared to my much loved BMW. Interior Wow!!! I was genuinely taken back with the interiors for both; they were equipped with more than enough gadgets and gizmos to keep me amused. The first things I noticed were the new LED lights, giving a very sexy and hi-tech ambience. Also, both had alloy wheels; high tech navigation; Bluetooth; entertainment and music systems; alongside everything else you would expect in a very high spec car. Both the A7 and A8 had better spec and cost less than the equivalent BMW or Mercedes models I drove. Comfort and Drive Bigger than the average family saloon, both cars handled extremely well - they were effortless and nimble to drive. As for space, there was an abundance of room for my three kids in the back and their bags. So, what are the downsides? I could not find any; the only real one for me is that I could actually see myself owning the whole range, not just the A7 or A8 Call Mark Langham (Audi Nottingham) quote “AsiansUK” and get an exclusive £250.00 contribution to bling up your new Audi. Raj Wins Trade BASTF launch Inaugural Next Search For An Bursary Programme Asian Football Star! Whilst reminiscing about our school days; we began discussing why some of our talented friends never went on to become professional sportspeople. Back then, everything was about education – education - education – sport and drama either didn’t matter or were seen as bringing shame! This was a majority view held by Asian parents who unselfishly toiled away, concerned primarily with our future welfare.

It is imperative the parents of Asian children today, think more laterally and do not ignore the opportunities that are available in sport for talented children. We firmly believe that education is important but becoming a doctor or lawyer is not within every child’s grasp. However, where a talent can be identified in a particular sport it should be nurtured and supported in the same vein. We are totally committed to promoting children’s sporting talent and that was the main reason for setting up BASTF – The British Asian Sporting Talent Foundation. We believe if these children are given the right opportunities and necessary support from their parents a rising star will emerge. To this end we have launched officially launching the BASTF bursary, where four lucky individuals will be awarded a £500 bursary to invest in further training in their chosen sport. At the same time BASTF will champion these individuals over the coming years and provide access to our extensive network of sporting contacts.

Talented Asian footballer Raj Vijayarajah won the nationwide search for the Asian Football Star competition. Central midfielder Raj, 16, from Ilford, Essex, beat more than 500 young players to lift the SFAAFS Winner’s Cup and a series of great prizes that could change his career in football. Raj said: “To win Search for an Asian Football Star really is a dream come true. The prizes are amazing. I will be going to a Trials Day in front of scouts from Premier League and Football League clubs. I will train at the Football Association’s St George’s Park Centre of Excellence. And I get a week with the top coaches at the TradeNext Football CV Academy. At the moment I just train at school. I don’t play for a team. I was shocked when my name was announced as the winner. He has supported me all the way through SFAAFS.” Arsenal Football Club scout Tony Day, top freestyler Abbas Farid, BBC Asian Network presenter Noreen Khan and TradeNext Chief Executive Officer Mohsin Jameel formed the judging panel at Wembley Powerleague. Martial Arts Champion

Samera Ashraf Samera Ashraf is a British Asian woman who has made waves in the world of martial arts. With 11 belts including karate and kickboxing, Samera has been actively participating in martial arts for 10 years. We were delighted to speak to Samera. There is a lack of representation of BME women in martial arts, how does it feel to be a minority in the sport and what challenges does this present? Within our group of Edinburgh Assassins there are many other girls and women who are from minority ethnic backgrounds. I have never experienced any issues of race or gender within the group or when competing. I have come across my own personal challenges which have caused self-doubt. This has been difficult to overcome as I have struggled with believing in what I do. My brothers have always been supportive in what I do, but within the wider South Asian community I do face negative attitudes. The boundaries between religion and culture are often blurred to create misinterpretation of what is considered suitable. It is also important to encourage South Asian females and males of any age or size to take part in sports. The level of health promotion within previous generations may not have been particularly high; this is likely to have an impact on how future generations may view health and overall fitness. It has been established within government health reports that the prevalence of diabetes and heart related health issues are paramount within the South Asian communities in the UK. Changes in our diet and lifestyle choices in particular can help to reduce the risks associated with

the above health issues. For these reasons I believe it is increasingly important to be inclusive of children and adults when discussing the benefits of keeping fit and encouraging others to take part in sports. There are also benefits in maintaining positive family connections by involving other members of the family in fitness. It has and continues to be a very personal journey with many hurdles that I have to overcome to progress. However, I am confident that one day in the near future I will be successful in gaining a black belt. Your achievements have been recognised and you were the recipient of the first Scottish Muslim Women’s Award for Outstanding Sportswoman 2013 and the winner of the Scottish Asian Women’s Awards 2014 for Excellence in Sports 2014. How does it feel to be recognised for your achievements?

I have also been awarded the first Pride of Edinburgh Awards for Sporting Achievement and also joint winner of the Asian Women of Achievement Awards 2014 for Sport. To be acknowledged for such accolades is the greatest honour. I have to pay tribute to the many women who have helped establish the SAWA and the AWA, without them there would be little recognition of the talent especially within the sporting fields. What are your future ambitions? Currently I have plans to work alongside the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to assist with encouraging young people to actively participate in sports.

You can’t make things happen, until you try. www.AsiansUK.com

The Top 10 Richest Footballers in Europe With the European football season in full swing, Wealth-X reveals a list of the 10 wealthiest players in the European football leagues. The 10 footballers on the list are collectively worth more than US$1 billion, and predominantly represent clubs in Spain, France and the United Kingdom. With an estimated net worth of US$230 million, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is the wealthiest footballer in Europe – and the world. The 29-yearold Portuguese forward for the Spanish club is the world’s most expensive footballer, costing US$132 million when he was transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009. Ronaldo’s personal fortune accounts for nearly a quarter of the total net worth of the 10 footballers on the list. Lionel Messi takes second spot on the list and is the richest non-European footballer playing in the continent. The Argentine forward, who plays for FC Barcelona, is worth an estimated US$180 million.

Other non-Europeans on the Wealth-X list are Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure from Ivory Coast (worth US$90 million and US$70 million respectively) and
