A Clean Sweep for Sukhi Ghuman On many an occasion we have heard, companies must be London based in order to excel however, a midlands based entrepreneur has expelled this notion. Nottingham’s Sukhi Ghuman, CEO of Octavian Security - one of the world’s fastest growing security businesses secured 2014 as his year, winning an impressive collection of 6 awards and accolades.

Since the formation of Octavian Security in 2003, Sukhi has taken the company from strength to strength, shaping the modern security industry landscape. “When I formed Octavian, I set out to create a company that would provide the very best security services. We’ve had our fair share of challenges, but each one has helped us grow as a business and it’s always great to have this success recognised” states Sukhi. Early in Octavian’s development, it became evident the same values which distinguished Octavian from competitors in the UK could also be applied to overseas markets. Thus, Octavian now operates within Dubai, South Africa, Spain and the United States. I grew up on the poverty-line and once you’re out of that, there is no way you’re going back

Let’s learn more from the man himself – Sukhi Ghuman: What made you give up a successful law career and start your own business?

Yes, in the eyes of those around me I was in prime position – a Corporate Lawyer for a highly reputable law firm. I was ranking highly and set to excel within the profession. Whilst undertaking a case against a security firm I soon realised there was a void in the market that needed to be filled by a professional and reliable security firm – I knew I could do this; my entrepreneurial gene was re-energised. The biggest challenge now was to convince my wife (who was expecting our first child) and the rest of my circle of family and friends of the bold step I was going to take – they were not impressed.

“” There is no security or no guaranteed income

How would you describe life as an entrepreneur opposed to a professional? Great Fun: High Risk

I love every moment of it; most of all the freedom. But, be under no pretence, it is a dramatic change; motivation and self-belief is required in abundance. There is no security or no guaranteed income, so be in no doubt it is hard work!

I received no advice or grants – it was just me and my dream. I aimed for profit and then reinvested into the company. I recall long days, where I would make an average of 100 calls a day. It was fundamental to become sustainable straightaway. Fortunately I secured a prime contract immediately, however profits did not supplement income to where it had to be and business was only sustainable until the next cheque.

There was no room for demotivation – frame of thought had to be right! If I lost a contract I would reflect on it for 5 minutes and then move on to the next. No dwellings – only analyse. When you formed Octavian Security did you have a plan B in place? There was no plan B – it was all about making plan A work! I grew up on the poverty-line and once you’re out of that, there is no way you’re going back.

What has been your biggest obstacle to date?

By far it has to be finding the right people. After 11 years in business it remains a challenge to find the people who can share our drive and vision.

Octavian is now one of the leading international security firms; what is it about Octavian that set it above the rest?

Innovation Coming from a law background there was no cutting corners. From the very start Octavian could be no different from a blue-chip organisation. We ran like a legal institute with all services and training at the highest of standards. There was no difference between us and the services of a bluechip organisation, except for the fact Octavian provided a tailored package.

What is the secret to securing year on year growth? Planning – Understanding – Determination Always focus on how to grow to the next stage.

What lead you to venture outside the UK?

Naturally I always envisaged business presence outside the UK. Unconventionally this came into effect during a boys’ holiday to

Dubai; after a day into our break I deviated from the group to explore the city and identify opportunities. After further work it became apparent that procurement was easier abroad than the UK; hence I focused on securing connection and business outside the UK.

Which three people (famous or otherwise) would you most like to invite to a dinner party and why? a) Richard Branson – I had the honour of meeting him as a Virgin Fast Track Company; he was amazing, cool as a cucumber. b) Nelson Mandela – inspirational, I am currently reading his book c) Muhammad Ali – for his determination and strength

What are your personal goals for the future? In terms of business – Diversification, for example pharmaceuticals Africa and the Middle East; Securing the right people and growth Family Life – following extensive travel and long period away from home, I intend to spend more time with my family Philanthropy – exert further efforts and make a difference across the world

You’re a member of the British Indian Forum, established to offer mentoring and support to Indian owned British Businesses. Could you share a few pearls of wisdom? Get your planning right Utilise online platforms to initiate sales Manage your finances effectively

What do you like to wear / preferred brand?

I’m a very dedicated guy and this is no different when it comes to self-image – image is paramount. For work a great suit is key; Hugo Boss is certainly one of my favourite brands. Although I have been a tie-man for many years I am now slowly pulling away, however not completely.

Learning from the Asian Phenomenon By Spinder Dhaliwal

The continued success of Asian entrepreneurs testifies to the staying power of the Asian business community. Asian wealth in the UK has become more diverse. It now crosses from first through to second and third generations. We see an emerging and evolving Asian business community spanning manufacturing and services, entertainment and fashion, hotels and property, food and pharmaceuticals.

“ Not many people associate ebookers.com with its founder Dinesh Dhamija or Vitabiotics with Dr Kartar Lalvani

Parween Warsi

While programmes like The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den have popularised the brash, go getting entrepreneur, in reality it is hard work, perseverance and true grit that has seen the Asian business community flourish in the UK. But unlike Alan Sugar, Richard Branson or Duncan Bannatyne, a lot of the Asian-owned businesses are more famous than their owners. For example, not many people associate ebookers.com with its founder Dinesh Dhamija or Vitabiotics with Dr Kartar Lalvani. Both key players in the community but perhaps less well recognised outside.

succeed. Waymade Healthcare now employs more than 700 people. Mike Jatania, the chief executive of Lornamead too has enjoyed tremendous success with his acquisition strategy.

“” “” They transformed the UK from an 8-hour working day to 24-hours The Asian entrepreneur has been held up as a role model highlighting the rags to riches story. They transformed the UK from an 8-hour working day to 24-hours, seven days a week.

Indian cuisine and restaurants became a key part of the British lifestyle. The restaurants are responsible for the success of many of the key players in Asian enterprise. G.K. Noon, for example, credits the restaurants for opening the doors for his range of Indian chilled and frozen foods to be found in Sainsbury’s among other stores.

“” Women play a pivotal role in the business

There have been some significant changes in the composition of wealth creation. For example, there has been a shift in activities away from traditional manufacturing companies towards newer, higher-tech, higher value companies in industries like pharmaceuticals. The growth of Waymade healthcare headed by the Patel brothers Vijay and Bhikhu demonstrates this trend. Vijay recalls his humble start, ‘when you only have a shirt on your back you have nothing to lose.’ Born into poverty in the Western highlands of Kenya, the brothers arrived in the UK with a work ethic and a determination to

When you only have a shirt on your back you have nothing to lose.

If the results of these entrepreneurs were achieved in decades full of challenge and controversy, the past few years have been no different; sluggish economic growth, stock market uncertainty and question marks about the housing market provide the starkest of economic backdrops to this compendium of Asian success. Firoz Kassam of the London-based Firoka Group of Companies made his fortune in the hotel trade in London, which includes the Holiday Inn in Kings Cross as a major part of his portfolio. In 1999 he bought Oxford United Football Club for £1. This meant taking over its debts estimated to be about £18m and built the now famous Kassam Stadium on the edge of Oxford. Surinder Arora is one of the top hoteliers in the country with the flagship Arora International at Heathrow. It was the first hotel in the UK purpose-built for airline crew. A sister hotel opened at Gatwick in 2002 and now his portfolio is nationwide. The emergence of more Asian female entrepreneurs, many of whom are featured at awards ceremonies and on rich lists, illustrate the potential for achievement despite cultural, social and economic barriers. Increasingly we are seeing and hearing about women who have ‘made the grade’ and are pushing forward with new ideas. Perween Warsi of S&A Foods showed her determination in getting her Asian food range on the shelves of the major supermarket chain Asda. However, there is still a paucity of women identified but this masks the true involvement of female entrepreneurship in Asian enterprise. Women play a pivotal role in the business but are rarely given the limelight. This is changing and no doubt we’ll hear more of these silent contributors in years to come.

Abdul Malik:

Making a Difference Abdul Raoof Malik born in Easton, Bristol 1973, one of 7 children; left school after failing his GCSE’s and defeated all the odds by becoming a successful entrepreneur and opening the door for others to follow.

10 www.AsiansUK.com

Pak Butchers

Although Abdul failed his GCSE’s on his first attempt he would not allow this to determine the course of his future – coupled with bundles of determination and perseverance he returned to complete his education and also unleash his entrepreneurial gene. Analysing his locality (Easton) Abdul identified a demand for a traditional butcher that catered for the large Muslim community, as well as the other diverse communities. When Abdul realised an existing butcher’s (which of course had all the necessary resources in place) was facing bankruptcy he grasped the opportunity. Not waived by the large debt he was going to take on board Abdul saw this as his break to introduce ‘Pak Butchers’ to the Easton neighbourhood – www.pakbutchers. co.uk As Richard Branson said:

“A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts” Abdul’s philosophy was to have fun and involve all regardless of religion and cultural differences. He immediately set about communicating facts about Halal meat within surrounding areas; once people learnt that Halal meat tasted better because of the very little blood content and lasted approximately 7 days longer due to the reduced bacterial/toxin content, regular customers rose at a rapid rate.

“I have always tried to build bridges between the many different diverse communities that reside in my neighbourhood, whether it is business or community work my ethos has been about uniting our neighbourhood and thinking ‘outside the box’. A simple example of this was when I gave Halal turkeys to a Homeless charity over the Christmas period; most people think that Muslims have nothing to do with Christmas, but by supplying Halal Turkeys I was able change perceptions.” shares Abdul

Such all-inclusive work ethics have ensured the continued success of Pak Butchers. What started as a small sole trading business has now become Pak Butchers UK Ltd., with several branches throughout the South West. With numerous awards under his belt including: Bristol East Side Traders Award; Business of the Month from Bristol Evening Post and the Jury’s Hotel; Runner up for Business of the Year as well as being shortlisted for ‘Muslim 100 Jewel Awards’ by Lloyds TSB Bank and featured on 101pakistanis.com, Abdul is now considering franchising to allow others to experience and be part of its amazing success. Giving Back Staying true to his belief that business should be all-involving, Abdul devotes a considerable amount of time and resources in supporting his local community. Some of his key focuses have been: • Mentoring young people who want to start their own business. Abdul has also volunteered with ‘Community resolve’ a local organization that works with deprived and troubled youth to move on from where they are to a new positive and constructive community life. • Working with local Mosques and other religious organisations to facilitate cross cultural bridges between different communities – Abdul set up a Muslim Funeral Committee to help repatriate deceased Muslims to their desired countries of burial and was nominated for the Inner City 100 Financial Time’s Awards. • Working alongside the BEST (Bristol East Side Traders) Abdul has supported work to regenerate the local area with new shop fronts and traffic calming systems. • Community point office - an office dedicated to community issues and a gathering place for agencies to better access the local community. • Aiding Bristol City Council to establish a dedicated kitchen for Halal School meals and has now been approached by Cardiff City Council to help execute the same project there. • A Traders Association - Abdul has helped set up ‘Stapleton Road Traders Association’, Stapleton Road has often been listed as the worst crime hot spot in the country, Abdul has helped turn this around by engaging local traders with the community and getting them to make simple and effective changes to enhance the shopping experience for people who

visit the locality. • Police Bike Sponsorship - Abdul sponsored an off road bike to patrol the local cycle tracks and parks to help the locals cut crime and antisocial behaviour. • Working with the Inspector of the region for policing strategies in the local area and held regular police ‘best surgeries’ within Easton Bristol. He was also the first councillor to open and run a local Legal Advice Surgery’ dedicated to his ward; Abdul was awarded a ‘Community Champions award’ along with Maleeka Bokhari who was the co-founder of this project. Recognised for his hard work and commitment Abdul has been listed within Bristol’s M Shed museum as someone who has ‘inspired grass root change in his community’ and received the accolade of ‘Man of the year 2014’ at the MTM South West Asian Awards Politics Abdul has been approached by all the major political parties, to stand for Council Election within Easton, due to his involvement and contacts with the local community. Between 2005 and 2009 he was elected councillor and was the first Muslim to be elected on the Council and assisted in delivering a local ‘PREVENT’ program. Furthermore, he was part of a ‘Building the Bridges’ conference. He was nominated by his party to become Bristol’s first Muslim Lord Mayor in 2007. Abdul now sits as the only BME representative on the City of Bristol Liberal Democrat Executive and has been chosen as the parliamentary candidate for the Bristol East Constituency.

“I believe in empowering people to become leaders and I inspire change by delegating tasks to others to share the experience and inspire more leadership.” Abdul Mailk Abdul Malik on

Your questions answered: I want to apply for indefinite leave to remain; I came here after marrying my husband? Firstly, one needs to understand that a spouse can only apply for indefinite leave to remain as the spouse of a British citizen after 5 years. Previously this requirement was 27 months. If you do not meet this requirement you will need to apply for an extension before applying for indefinite leave to remain. Head Office Tel: 0161 771 2432

@HarrisonBryce1 www.AsiansUK.com

If however, you have been in the United Kingdom as a spouse for five years, you may apply for indefinite leave to remain. This is provided you meet the maintenance and accommodation requirements together with the B1 English test and the “Life in the UK test”. It is importance to note that you will need to pass both these tests. My application has been refused, what can I do? You can appeal many decisions made by the Home Office. These are appealed to an independent Tribunal who will assess your case on the evidence provided. It is essential that you ensure you have professional representation throughout the process as if the Tribunal find against you, you may be required to leave the United Kingdom. I have married a European national; can I remain in the United Kingdom? The simple answer is yes. There are requirements which must be met; however EU law is far less complicated than British law. The Wealth-X list of India’s richest individuals reveals that entrepreneurialism is the key to attaining financial success in the world’s largest democracy. All five entrepreneurs on the list made their fortunes through their businesses in sectors such as oil and gas, steel and pharmaceuticals. The five billionaires collectively control 56.19 billion pounds in personal wealth, accounting for 47.5% of India’s total billionaire wealth. With an estimated net worth of 16 billion pounds, the richest man in India is Mukesh Ambani, chairman and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries, a Fortune Global 500 company with oil and gas interests. Through Reliance, Ambani owns the Mumbai Indians Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team, reportedly the most valuable team at around 73.61 million pounds.

Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal takes second place on the list with a personal net worth of 11.30 billion pounds. UK BANK BRANDS IN DECLINE BUT LLOYDS AND TSB BUCK THE TREND

T

he Brand Finance Banking 500, conducted by leading brand valuation and strategy consultancy Brand Finance plc, is a league table of the world’s biggest banks, ranked by their brand value. The UK’s bank brands collectively lost 3% of their value this year. NatWest, RBS and Nationwide all saw their brand values fall. Coutts was the worst affected; The Queen’s bank has lost 42% of its brand value in a year.

• Total UK bank brand value down 3% • Lloyds shows best growth on 2014 of the Big Four (+16%) • TSB is the best performer overall, up 21% on 2014 • Standard Chartered and Coutts down 28% and 42%, respectively • Wells Fargo remains the world’s most valuable bank brand

toughening regulatory regime. Lloyds was the only one of the Big Four to show strong growth, having increased 16% to $6.9bn (£4.4bn). Brand Finance’s results suggest that CEO Antonio Horto-Osorio has masterminded a successful turnaround. Renovated branches and a refreshed image suggest a new confidence, helping to distance Lloyds from the problems of the company’s recent past.

Standard Chartered was fined $327m by US authorities for violating sanctions against Iran but the reputational impact has clearly had an even bigger impact on its financial position; brand value is down by nearly $2 billion (£1.3bn).

Recently revived TSB has fared even better and is the UK’s most successful bank brand this year, having grown by over 21%. Its marketing has emphasized not only its competitive rates but also the importance of straightforwardness, trust and heritage. It leads a field of increasingly successful challenger banks, putting more pressure on the established players.

HSBC remains the UK’s most valuable bank brand, with a value of $27.3bn (£17.5bn). Both HSBC and 2nd placed Barclays have registered negligible growth rates of 1.5% and 0.1% respectively. They, along with most UK banks, have been significantly affected by a

Brand Finance CEO David Haigh comments, “A strong brand builds loyalty, helping to reduce churn. As switching becomes easier and with nimble competitors emerging, some banks may have to rely on the power of their brand ever more heavily to hold onto customers.”

Vivek Chadha donates £100,000 to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust Vivek Chadha, a 26 year old UK-based follower of Mahatma Gandhi has become the youngest donor so far to contribute £100,000 to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust. Vivek Chadha, Director of Nine Hospitality Ltd., is a hotel owner; residential developer and major commercial investor in UK real estate. Vivek graduated as a civil engineer in 2010, from University College London, where Mahatma Gandhi was part of the University alumni. Chadha has been interested in Mahatma Gandhi from an early age, and even had his picture in his room at home, to inspire him in his schooldays. Vivek expresses,

“I am interested in particular in how Gandhi emphasised the privilege of giving and practiced compassion in creative ways. The fact that Gandhi concentrated all his energy in the service of others is a great example of how all young people should follow this idea in our day-to-day lives.” Lord Meghnad Desai, chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust states,

“It is very important that young people like Vivek step forward and donate towards this noble cause and he joins a very important growing group of British Asians who have responded generously. More than fifty per cent of

Further substantial donations came from Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and his family, and Bajaj auto chief Rahul Bajaj; both of whom donated £200,000 each. The sculpture will go up at Parliament Square in the coming months and is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Our Prime Minister David Cameron has stated this initiative would lead to Britain cementing its historical connection with India.

“One (of the many reasons) is the importance of Gandhi to Indian history and the importance of Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence and peaceful protests,” articulates the Prime Minister Cameron continues to underline the fact that the teachings of Gandhi are relevant to anyone who wants to try to build a bigger and stronger society alongside a prosperous economy.

“I always remember Gandhi’s message.” adds Cameron

Journey Into The Unknown… I’ve always wanted to have my own business, work my own hours and just generally be a boss lady. I wasn’t sure how to go about it until I was guided in the direction of The Prince’s Trust. They have helped me start a business from making a business plan; guided workshops on how to run a business; managing accounts and provided mentors to help and advice on anything I was unsure of. Initially, The Playful Indian started under a different name, a great mish-mash of art and craft. I didn’t actually know what I was doing. I was selling cards, scarves, jewellery and generally anything I could make. There wasn’t really a structure or a theme to the business, it didn’t feel right and it was all too much. After a discussion with my Prince’s Trust mentors, I decided to make a change and they gave me the confidence I needed. So, just over a year ago I started again - rebranded and refreshed with a new name, new aim and essentially, a new business, The Playful Indian. Today I focus on creating greeting cards and gifts with that Asian twist and a little humour with phrases that pop into my head such as, ‘You’re the Chutney to my Samosa’ or ‘Here’s my last Gulab Jamun’. The Playful India has diversified to include tote bags, clothing and homewares. Although the

business is small and still finding its feet, I’m using this time to find out what works and what doesn’t, as well as getting to grips on actually having a business! With a background is in Graphic Design and Illustration, I knew exactly what I was doing in terms of the creating aspect but the running of a business was whole new dimension! I had to learn everything. When I left university I worked for a magazine and freelanced as a graphic designer creating logos, brochures etc. so my time and work load management skills were pretty good. Now I had to add marketing, customer service, social media and accounts to this too. The Prince’s Trust were amazing with social media and marketing, they held regular workshops which helped me develop these skills. In terms of finances I try to keep an eye on what I’m spending and what’s coming in. You need to know what sells and what doesn’t then you can spend time on doing more of the stuff that sells and I also have an accountant that makes sure I don’t overspend too! I’m still learning all these skills today but it’s a great deal easier and less daunting. I know what works for me and that’s the key – finding a way YOU can work effectively and efficiently. I’ve made many work effectively and efficiently. I’ve made many mistakes and there’s no doubt I’ll make more but I don’t regret

Businesses often waste a lot of money, because they forget to cancel contracts they no longer want. “And we should know,” explains Angelique Schouten, co-founder of Cloudtract. “We forgot to cancel an IT contract and wasted 40.000 euro, paying for a software license we didn’t need anymore.” A market study revealed the absence of an easy-to-use solution to store and manage contracts for free. Contract management neglected by SMEs Most entrepreneurs and SMEs rightfully focus on running their day-to-day business and do not, or to a much lesser extent, pay attention to managing their contract administration. “When we researched contract management behaviour at companies, we

“” Cloudtract believes that contract management should be possible without buying software,

concluded that contracts are usually kept in a folder in the corner of an office or at a secretary’s desk. Sometimes a simple spreadsheet or calendar program is used. Especially facility and maintenance contracts lack attention. These contracts regularly do not make money, they just cost money and consequently www.AsiansUK.com

are not top of mind,” according to Schouten.

Absence of a simple and affordable solution A market study showed there were two categories of contract management solutions; according to Schouten: “Contract management software that is either part of an expensive ERP-software package or an over-engineered pay-per-user license model. Not the solution we were looking for as we only needed a place to store contracts safely and receive an alert.” Contract management at SMEs often results in unwanted renewed contracts, double contracts or unfavourable conditions. It’s a problem that Cloudtract wants to tackle headon with its free online platform that makes it easy to securely store contracts and set alerts. While the ultimate goal of Cloudtract is to offer this solution

to businesses and consumers as well, the company has launched its beta version for companies only. It is available in English and more languages will follow shortly.

Kavita Oberoi OBE When did you realise you were going to receive an honour and what was your reaction?

I was informed via a letter which arrived in the post. A very dubious letter that had the “Cabinet Office” on the outside. After reading it three times I was still in complete dismay, so I asked one of my staff to read it out and confirm what I thought! Early 2015 at Buckingham Palace, The Prince of Wales held an investiture bestowing honours to men and women who have changed Britain for the better. Among the recipients was businesswoman and entrepreneur Kavita Oberoi (featured in issue 4:2014 #AsiansUK Magazine); she was awarded an OBE for her services to entrepreneurship and Start-Up businesses.

Kavita has successfully supported countless Start-up businesses to get their ideas off the ground and has ensured that numerous students from Burton and South Derbyshire College (of which she is a Patron) step into the world work and business.

you explain what this is to our readers and how it has helped small businesses build their road to success?

Burton and South Derbyshire College (of which I am a Patron) we launched the innovative “Kavita Oberoi & BSDC Enterprise Academy”. This inspirational academy brings together the business potential of students with the project needs of local companies thus, providing budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to experience ‘real life’ business for the first time and sharpening their entrepreneurial skills. Businesses can tap into a number of disciplines and students. We will soon hit the first target of getting 100 learners into the workplace and we have a number of positive testimonials from both learners and businesses of the benefits of the academy.

“Kavita was awarded an OBE for her services to entrepreneurship and Start-Up businesses.”

In 2012 I set up the Oberoi Business Hub this was initially intended as a launch pad for start-up companies. Shortly after, in conjunction with

Could you describe your day at Buckingham Palace when you collected your award?

It was an absolutely surreal day. As I’m a brand ambassador for Rolls Royce, it started with their photoshoot. We arrived at Buckingham Palace by 10am. Whilst guests took their places, we recipients were taken into a separate area for a briefing on how to collect our honour - the precise number of steps to walk forward and of course the courtesy (smiles). After a quick lunch in Mayfair I headed off to deliver a keynote at 3pm to a group of 100+ doctors. All in a day’s work…

Did Prince Charles say anything to you as you were receiving your award?

Prince Charles mentioned I should consider supporting start-ups and businesses through the Princes Trust.

When to start the pension pot? If scaremongering headlines are to be believed, Britain’s population is sleepwalking into a pension crisis. Or, perhaps more accurately, we’re all too busy posting pictures of tonight’s tea on social media platforms, catching up with all those TV shows we missed, and working increasingly long weeks to notice the rather ominous skies forming overhead. And they said the financial crisis was over.

According to a report by Policy Exchange in the light of the government’s Workplace Pension scheme, whereby employers and employees must contribute 2% of all income over £5,668 per year (due to rise to 8% in 2018), this gesture isn’t nearly enough. Already, to secure an annual income of £16,200 after you retire some 12% of your annual income needs to be contributed, and currently those leaving work for good today, aged 65, would need a pension fund of £270,000 to claim an annual income of £9,000 after retirement. So what does this mean, apart from the fact that Westminster’s attempts to plug the ever-widening pension gap isn’t going far enough? Well, for one thing, it means there should be no perceived bottom age at which you begin paying into that pot for the future. Indeed, most experts now say you should begin saving for those golden years the moment the first

30 www.AsiansUK.com

pay cheque hits your bank account. Of course, for many people carrying around student loans and other forms of credit, this may not be easy, but nonetheless you get the picture. One important factor to take into consideration if you are in debt is that some interest payments, particularly on short-term loans such as credit cards, will actually be higher in value than any return on an investment. Put into clearer English, it’s important to concentrate on settling these debts as soon as possible, and it will probably make sense to tackle this before you begin concentrating on a pension, irrespective of how old you are. Which isn’t said in an attempt to put you off beginning a fund, more to try and highlight the most efficient and effective way of saving.

Do we really need a personal pension? You may be wondering why it’s even worth bothering with a personal pension at all, considering we’re blessed with a welfare state designed to provide for us after we give up the day job. Unfortunately, though, there’s a good chance your State Pension will not be enough when the time finally comes to retire. As of 2016, the entire pension system is set to change to a new Combined Pension - expected to be around £144 per week. Clearly that’s not a huge figure if you still have mortgage payments to make, or remain in rented property after work is done. Worse still, there’s a good chance those in their late teens and early 20s today will not be able to access these payments from government until they are in their mid-70s, meaning if they want to retire sooner they will need a separate pension fund to guarantee some income.

Apple Sets Another Record The power of a brand is just one component of Brand Finance’s analysis. The company combines the information on a brand’s strength with financial data, to calculate its commercial value. When brand values are calculated, Apple comes out on top, what sets it apart is ability to monetize that brand. Apple has a remarkable knack for using its brand to popularise and hence monetize existing technology, as it did so successfully first with the mp3 player, smart phone and later the tablet. Critics have been silenced by the success of the

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Consumers have snapped latest models in their droves, helping Apple set records for quarterly profits ($18bn) and company value ($710bn). Brand Finance CEO David Haigh comments, “The Apple brand is worth US$128 billion. That value is huge not just in its own terms but also as a proportion of Apple’s record-breaking corporate valuation. It goes to show how valuable brands are as business assets and how important it is to manage them well.” Every year, leading brand valuation and strategy consultancy Brand Finance puts thousands of the world’s top brands to the test. They are evaluated to determine which are the most powerful, and the most valuable.

A space that’s inviting, romantic, and sumptuous. Most of us have bedrooms but how many of us have a true boudoir? If your bed basically consists of a rumpled duvet thrown over the mattress with a couple of pillows plonked on top, it probably isn’t setting the right tone. Elevating the bedroom décor to that next level is relatively simple with a few key additions. Heidi Alad of A.LONDON cautions that before you add anything, take things away. “Declutter. A bedroom should be somewhere to relax so tidy away the old iPod cables, the gym rucksack and the unwanted Christmas gifts; you haven’t got round to putting on eBay. Once the space is free of detritus, it becomes easier to examine the space.” Wallpaper is one of the easiest ways of adding drama. A.LONDON recommends deeper tones without any pattern, just texture. Designs with silk threading provide an

34 www.AsiansUK.com

interesting detail and hint of luxury. One of Alad’s recent designs included; antique foxed mirrors either side of the headboard, sitting behind the bedside lamps. The elegant mirrors “doubled” the light. “Actually, lighting is one of the most important aspects of any bedroom,” states Alad, “Rather than harsh overhead spotlights, a softer, more flattering effect can be had through a combination of wall lights, lamps and candles. Think of layering the light as you need it rather than having all the light come from a single source.” The final element, of course, is the bedding. White sheets are a classic but layers play an important role here, too. This is where you can introduce the satin or velvet touches to give the room the feel of a boutique hotel. A dark coloured

satin covered duvet or bedspread taken to halfway up the bed and then folded down looks inviting. For pillows, rather than laying them flat, prop large square or Oxford pillow cases at the back with housewife pillows in front. Finish the look with contrasting velvet or satin accent pillows with perhaps a small bolster across the front for a contrasting shape. It’s a bed that wouldn’t look out of place at a five star hotel. “Creating an inviting bedroom is important not just in terms of décor but also for our overall health,” explains Alad, “Bedrooms should be a retreat where we can retreat from our hectic lives and wake up refreshed ready to face another day. A restful space is key our wellbeing.” Stella Savage of A.LONDON www.a-ldn.com

Bookshelf Colour of My Heart Debut novel by Kavita Comar. Debut novel by Kavita Comar. The story, told through the eyes of Anushka Lamba, a British born Indian daughter explores the tensions and frustrations that arise when her loving but traditional Hindu parents believe she is too ‘westernised’ and not ‘Indian’ enough. “I strongly believe that the story will resonate with so many young Asian adults, regardless of their faith or background,” says the 34 year old, excited author. “It will strike a chord with youngsters who are born and brought up in traditional households, yet value both their proud Indian heritage and their western lifestyle.” When Anu arrives at university, half way across the country to study a degree that’s far from her parents’ choice and their wavering

eye, she’s exposed to freedom and independence in abundance. She embarks on a secret relationship with fellow student Chris, whom she desperately wants to introduce and welcome into her family. Her dilemmas and decisions take her on a rollercoaster ride – a tangled web of culture, identity, betrayal, confusion, love, hatred and heartache – in ways she could never have imagined. Kavita cleverly takes the reader on a warm hearted and emotional journey which starts in Anu’s present; but delves deep into her past as she strives to assert her own happiness and discover her own identity - without losing touch with her proud Indian roots and her parents aspirations. The Gori’s Daughter By Shazia Hobbs The tale is often harrowing, always exciting and revealing, but is ultimately about triumph; a victory for resilience and decency over bigotry and discrimination. With the fullest cast of characters, The Gori’s Daughter isn’t just about understanding Mixed race unions and identity, or even the turmoil of the polygamous household. Hobbs also shines a bright light on why some cross cultural marriages happen and ultimately fail, but touchingly also demonstrates the elements of care, loyalty and desperately sought love that

bind people from disparate heritages together. Hobbs debut isn’t a criticism, not of Islam, not of Pakistani culture, wider White society, or even her family. It is a fair and compassionate exposé of all of these dynamics and more, and a unique accomplishment for that. Whilst readers eagerly await the forthcoming sequel, The Gori, from Hobbs, The Goris Daughter is quite possibly the most compelling novel based on a true story you will ever read. - The Golden Room Available on Amazon

Agony

Massi Ji AsiansUK Agony Massi Ji, Mandy Sanghera is a Human Rights Activist possessing 25 years’ of experience, now she is here to help you.

Remember a problem shared is a problem halved, so take up this chance to seek Agony Massi Ji’s advice and help. I ‘m feeling so alone I lost my mum last year, she was my best friend and we were very close. I can’t talk to my siblings as they all have moved on. Now my sister is telling my dad to meet someone else; how can she do this to my mum’s memory. I wish I was dead too I can’t live without her. • Massi Ji says, sadly many bereaved people can get depressed after losing a loved one. We all go through 5 stages when it comes to grief; denial & isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. You haven’t quite come through all the stages. I suggest you contact your GP and CRUSE Bereavement they may be able to offer support. Do also try talking to your father, it’s important that your family know how you are feeling Sadly death comes to all of us.

My girlfriend is not allowed out I have been seeing Salma who is 19 for the last 5 months. I love her so much, I see her at college, I want to take her out but her family are so strict, I wish I could go out in the evening . Salma won’t lie to her family, I am feeling really depressed. • Massi Ji says, why don’t you talk to Salma and let her know how you are feeling. You will have to respect her feelings, if you continue to push you may lose her; sadly some Asian parents are still conservative when it comes to relationships. Why don’t you do things together during the day? I am pregnant by my ex husband I ended up sleeping with my ex and now I am pregnant, he has a new girlfriend. I am about 9 weeks and I don’t know what to do. I haven’t told him because he will think I did this to ruin his new life • Massi Ji says, you have to decide whether or not you want to keep the baby. I think you should talk to your ex but before you do be prepared for his reaction as it may not be the outcome you are expecting. A baby doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Hopefully he will want to contribute to the child’s life. You have to be prepared to bring up the child alone

Why is everyone accusing me of something I didn’t do? My husband and his family are always putting me down, my mother in law always tampers with my cooking adding extra salt chillies; the other day she accused me of taking £50. My husband doesn’t trust me he is always checking my phone and Facebook account. • Massi Ji says, If you haven’t done anything wrong then you have nothing to be sorry about, you must continue defending yourself. Remember it’s not you who has the issues. You have to decide whether you can continue with this marriage. If you don’t have any trust do you really have a relationship. Every couple has arguments but if this one doesn’t go away then perhaps some relationship counselling could help you both to communicate better. Respect has to be earned and not demanded maybe you need to set some boundaries with your in laws.

Tightening our belts in more ways than one

The economy may be shrinking but so are waistlines, particularly those belonging to the nation’s men. In spite of a climate of financial austerity we have certainly not lost faith in the benefits of cosmetic surgery, according to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. The number of procedures continued to increase steadily by nearly six per cent last year to a total of 43,069; with the biggest rise seen in male tummy tucks – abdominoplasty. Consultant plastic surgeon Rajiv Grover, who is responsible for the national audit as BAAPS President Elect, says: “The continued popularity of aesthetic plastic surgery even through financially difficult times demonstrates that the public sees real value in the psychological and physical improvement that can be achieved. “Advances in techniques have also meant it’s harder to ‘tell’ if someone has undergone a procedure - they may just look wellrested, or refreshed! “Whether because of the recent implant scare or a backlash against some ‘lunchtime’ non-surgical treatments that don’t deliver what they promise, it is reassuring that patients are doing their homework, evaluating criteria other than just price, and choosing BAAPS surgeons.” The audit’s main findings reveal that: • Women had 38,771 procedures, up from 34,413 (in 2010) • Male surgery increased by 5.6% to 4,298; accounting for 10% of all cosmetic surgery procedures • Breast augmentation held its place as the most popular procedure • Male liposuction went up by 8% • Tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) proved popular with both sexes, with a 7% increase in women and a substantial 15% jump in male patients Fazel Fatah, consultant plastic surgeon and President of the BAAPS, says: “It is understandable that procedures for the more noticeable areas of the face and body - such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty (nose jobs) and eyelid surgery - continue to prove popular when patients are looking to get the most ‘impact’ from their surgery to enhance their mental well-being and self-confidence. It is also not surprising to note a considerable rise in treatments such as tummy tucks and liposuction when there has been an increase in people undergoing obesity treatment such as gastric bands. These patients are usually left with a lot of loose skin that causes physical problems and unsightly body contour which can only be addressed by surgery.”

The Colourful Language of India Art Creativity in art is heavily influenced by the state of mind of the artist, which is why it is seen as a concentration of an idea or concept into a physical entity. For most of us art is like a mystery waiting to be solved. With underlying themes and messages, the journey of art is best enjoyed by the viewer who demystifies it. This is why Treniq has collaborated with two such Indian artists whose works reflect their traditional roots in a contemporary style. Mr. Krishn Kanhai As a contemporary artist of the modern generation, Mr. Krishn Kanhai has stamped his name in the world of art through numerous awards and recognitions. Mr. Krishn Kanhai is a decorated artist, having been bestowed with the ‘Padma Shri Award’ - the highest civilian award given by the Republic of India. His paintings are works of art that highlight traditions and the Indian culture in a contemporary form. Rich not only in colours but also in its use of gold accents, his paintings have adorned the walls of celebrities and political hotshots. They are regularly soughtafter around the world, especially in Great Britain, where Mr. Kanhai has a big set of clientele. It is this love for Indian Art in the UK that fuelled Mr. Kanhai’s decision to exhibit his paintings in London. Arjun Kanhai Taking the family name forward as the scion of the famous Kanhai legacy, Arjun Kanhai carries the genes of art within him. Creating a niche for himself, this young contemporary artist mirrors social issues through vibrant expressions on canvas. Under the tutelage of his

father, Krishn Kanhai, Arjun has grown as an independent artist whose work has impressed many Bollywood celebrities and political personalities. Arjun’s paintings and his style of work stems from his culture. His current collection, the one he is working on, portrays the Hindu god ‘Krishna’ in a contemporary aura. Stemming from the emotional interpretation that God resides in each one of us, he is trying to portray common people and their faces as Krishna in his paintings by using mixed media. He is trying to capture the rich integration of science and philosophy through intense use of acrylic and oil colours with the use of gold foils and photography. To connect with art lovers and build relationships across cultures and continents through the colourful language and power of art – Treniq is collaborating with these two celebrated artists launching their work in the UK. Epitomized in the forthcoming exhibition at the 2015 Asian Business Awards, held in London on March 27th, consists of a significant collection of oils on canvas with an intense focus on creating divine icons on canvas using oil paints and gold accents. Treniq is an invite-only community to discover and purchase high-end art and luxury interior products from around the world, launched by Sheetal Sachdev and Nitesh Thadani. www.treniq.com Twitter: @Treniq Facebook: treniquk

As a volunteer you’ll build on existing talents and develop new skills as well as increase your confidence and give you a sense of wellbeing.

“We spend our lives plodding along and despite having a good job I realised I hadn’t done anything truly fulfilling in a long time. As MND awareness is such a big focus for people with MND, and their families it feels wonderful to be a part of the Association. As a volunteer Press Officer, knowing you got a story in the newspaper really does mean so much.” Anita Karunsaagarar, volunteer

About motor neurone disease (MND) and the MND Association: MND is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement; people can still think and feel, but their muscles refuse to work. It affects people from all communities. It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, and eventually, breathe. It kills five people every day in the UK – 30% within a year and more than 50% within two years of diagnosis. There is no cure. The Association improves care, funds and promotes research and also campaigns and raises awareness.

“The Association has been very helpful and supportive to both me and my family. The warmth of the Association radiates in their support for people affected by the disease, for which I and I’m sure many others, are very thankful for.” Mahendra Parmar, living with MND To find out more about the difference you can make in your community please contact us. Here I Come! Choosing an antenatal class with proven long-term benefits for your child.

‘Click’ antenatal classes: So you’re pregnant. You’ve picked out the buggy, the birth plan has been agreed and your family and friends are on standby with a host of advice. It’s an exciting time, and it’s easy to lose sight of some of the most important questions you could be asking yourself. How will I know my baby feels safe and secure? How can I make sure I bond with my baby when it arrives? How can I give my baby the best possible start in life? Will I be a good enough parent? How will I know how to decide on all the advice I get from my family and friends? These questions are more important than ever as recent studies have shown that how you respond to your baby between the 0-2 period of life has a profound effect on their brain development, confidence and self-esteem in later life – and we’ve researched a practical program that shows you how to get it right and quite simply….our classes work!

48

We have shown that mothers who attended our classes antenatally, not only showed a deeper understanding of the parent-infant www.AsiansUK.com

bond; but also developed practical skills of how to interact with their baby to stimulate healthy emotional and brain development. These infants, when compared to children whose parents attended routine antenatal classes were less clingy and showed advanced social, cognitive and emotional skills by the age of 3.

Asian mother myself, I am only too aware of the complexities that couples go though in our community during this exciting period. I want to enable mothers and fathers to get the right information that is scientifically tested, freeing them to the best start on their journey to parenthood” Dr Tejinder KondelLaws, Director at ClickParenting

In these fun practical classes, we will show you how to relate to, and understand your baby’s inner world to develop a bond that will give your child the confidence to explore, learn and reach their full potential. During the session, we help parents explore their own minds approaches based on science, enabling them to develop an enquiring stance towards the mental state of the new human being who will be joining their world.

This one-off, three hour antenatal class for mothers and fathers can be attended in addition to NHS or other antenatal classes. For more information about classes in your area, visit our website or contact us at info@clickparenting.com or like us on Facebook. Twitter: @ClickParenting

Designers Group Shot I have also brought my latest collection that was on the runway. Indian brides in the UK are hungrier for culture. They are used to the best things and London is truly the most cosmopolitan city in the world.” Aashni + Co Wedding Show was presented by one of the UK’s leading Indian fashion influencers, Aashni Anshul Doshi (Shah), Founder and Creative Director of Aashni + Co, a high fashion, Indian concept store located in Notting Hill, London. Speaking at the event, Aashni said, “I’m overwhelmed by the atmosphere, the energy and the response here today to a luxe

exhibition concept and retail platform of this scale. It was important to feature the right mix of designers and fashion houses, from established A-listers and luxury designers to the most sought after and desirable new generation talent. It is time people stopped travelling all the way to India to find their wedding outfit – we wanted to bring the best of India’s bridal to our doorstep and we’ve achieved that. The response has unanimously been amazing.”

Travel TOP SECRET:

Indian Wedding location I help run the most beautiful chateau in the South West of France. The hidden gem in the crown that is Gascony; also known as the ‘French Tuscany’, home of d’Artagnan and his Mousquetaires. To this day that attention to detail, the love of fine things remains at the heart of this Family Château; now shared with guests. The Grand Salon is still a fabulous place to enjoy with friends and family. There is a gym, sauna and swimming pool, big screen film room, roller skating area in the chais * and music room with instruments for guests to use. The Chateau has a resident concierge service for guests and this isn’t like any other rental, you’ll be made to feel as though this is your home. It is a rare chance to feel like the Lord or Lady of an authentic French Chateau. We leave you in charge of the Chateau. Everything is left for you to enjoy. Even the ivory and silver nail file in the bathroom is not put away. You can have your own chef, however there are many wonderful restaurants around offering our local

produce and our own specialities such as Foie gras and duck. The Chateau is close to the pretty towns of Condom and Montreal-du-Gers, with its vineyards and fields of sunflowers, and the nearby beautiful Landes pine forest. Created by Napoleon III along the Atlantic coast from Bordeaux to Biarritz, it is the most extensive forest in Europe and you will often smell the salty pine-perfumed fragrance as it wafts over the countryside. The Chateau staff will help you organise wine tasting events, picnics on the river, French cuisine workshops, floral display classes, hot air ballooning and lots more. You can enjoy musical evenings, concerts, plays, flea markets, petanque and the famous marionettes theatres in the local villages. You won’t find this exquisite Family Chateau in any guidebook, the name is kept secret so that guests can be completely relaxed and uninterrupted a hidden gem where time stands still!

We recently had the most beautiful Indian Wedding and I have to quote the comments made by the priest: "I keep telling whoever I meet that this wedding was just magical! The scene and timings which you set for this wedding made it spectacular. Every aspect of the wedding was so unique. I felt a great link with you all and the bride and groom were just absolutely fabulous in their mood during the rituals. Apart from kindly listening so intently they were completely connected. It was such a pleasure to be with them. I will remember their wedding as my most enjoyable despite so many ceremonies I have and will perform.” August 2014 www.vie-de-chateau.com Photocredits: JAM www.armstrong-millar.com Email: john@armstrong-millar.com

Travel Backwater Holidays:

“” One of the world’s premier backwater cruise destinations

Epitome of Luxury on Nature’s Lap I must have visited Kerala more than a dozen times and each time I stayed as a guest of either a luxury resort or in one of the famed Kerala Home stay properties. Never did I venture to stay in Kerala’s many luxurious “Kettuvalams” (Houseboats) until my childhood friend from Cochin – Jacob Kutty urged me to try out one of Kerala’s best backwater destinations – the shimmering Lake Vembanad, which happens to be one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes. While there is no dearth of luxury hotels and resorts in God’s Own Country, the Kerala Houseboat segment has provided a kind of “shot-in-the-arm” for Kerala Tourism and today Kerala has carved a niche for itself as one of the world’s premier backwater cruise destinations and welcomes the discerning world traveler in the most unique way. Once my reservations for a 5 day Backwater holiday was confirmed, I booked my air tickets and hopped into an early morning flight from Kolkata to Chennai and from Chennai to Cochin. Around 3 P.M. I reached Cochin and Jacob was there to receive me and we reached the magnificently appointed Kumarakom Lake Resort.

52 www.AsiansUK.com

The unprejudiced eye of the architect echoes in every nook and corner of the resort. Here at the Kumarakom Lake Resort, the virtually impossible seems graceful and easy and I think that’s what architecture is all about. Be it the ethnically designed Heritage Villas, Lake Villas or the marvelously luxurious Presidential Suites, the resort is a supreme adjustment to opportunity and local conditions. All attention has been concentrated on, not collecting art, but on creating art, like one beautiful picture. I was told by the resident naturalist that the Vembanad Wetland system has been integrated in the list of wetlands of global importance in terms of wetland conservation and happens to be the largest of the three Ramsar Sites in the state of Kerala. It isn’t surprising to fathom that Vembanad Lake today has become a major tourist destination due largely to its ethereal and picturesque setting. As we ventured towards the impeccably conceived Kumarakom Tourist Village, which happens to be the most popular site on the shores of the shimmering lake, a sense of fulfillment engulfed me.

“” The virtually impossible seems graceful and easy

For the benefit of the discerning travelers, the village offers a bewildering array of nature based recreational pursuits like luxurious boat cruises; yoga & meditation; the famed Kerala Ayurvedic massage therapies and fishing to name just a few.

In fact, the ingenuity of the Keralites has to be experienced to be believed – from thoughtfully prepared itineraries to an amazing array of holiday experiences like

tracing family history; the unique décor; eco-friendly initiatives and one-of-its-kind cultural experiences with the host community - it has compelled the new age traveler not only to embrace the backwater holiday options but also to herald the beginning of “Responsible Tourism” in this gem of a tourist state in India. Being a Travel Writer, it was most refreshing to absorb the sheer enthusiasm of the support staff at the resort; they would go that extra mile just to see you smiling and satisfied. Since I had limited time at my disposal, I preferred to remain within the resort premises

and explore every nook and corner of this Eden on Earth. It was only in the evenings, with the red molten ball setting on the distant lake horizon that I would venture to the impeccably designed luxurious houseboat of the resort and embark on a peaceful 1-1.5 hour night cruise. Here I would also indulge on a few sips of my favored tipple and enjoy a sumptuous dinner before retiring for the night in the king-sized bed onboard the houseboat. To explore the nocturnal joys of the backwaters, the concept of “Backwaters by Night” is becoming a rage in Kerala and I must admit

53 www.AsiansUK.com

that the joy of viewing nightly creatures is thrilling. There was just enough ambient light, courtesy of the moon and pretty soon things got interesting. The expert boatman knew the backwaters by the tip of his fingers and he would often halt at the right places, by the edges of lake. All sorts of nocturnal creatures: frogs and snakes, fish, large aquatic insects and other weird and wonderful things could be seen prowling in the shallows, right next to the shore. You must have a keen sense of hearing and your ears become even more important for locating and identifying these creatures. If it is spring or summer, a night-time symphony of frogs may be performing.

After being thoroughly pampered on the “Kettuvallam” (Houseboat), I can vouch – it is one thing to be pampered in a super deluxe hotel but quite another to spend time on the banks of Kerala! It’s sheer bliss! Traveler’s Fact File: Reaching Kerala: Kerala is a small state that is ideally located to the south western part of India. This south Indian state is renowned for its nature based tourism products and blessed with nature’s bounties. To the west is the Arabian Sea, and to the east is the impressive Western Ghats mountain range, which in a way separates the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu from Kerala.

BRINGING BOLLYWOOD TO LIFE The Morani’s brothers are renowned internationally for having the cartel delivering spectacular events involving leading Bollywood celebs. When referring to leading Bollywood awards events or private ceremonies attended by the sort after Bollywood stars, they are almost always organised by Cineyug – the brand of the Morani Brothers In the UK Cineyug brought us the ‘Tempations’ concert in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta etc… and broke all box office records. Most recently they brought to us the Slam Tour with the cast of Happy New Year - Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah, director Farah Khan alongside Madhuri Dixit, Malaika Arora-Khan and singing sensation Kanika Kapoor. Yet again it was a sell-out event at London’s O2 Arena. The Morani brothers Ali, Karim and Mohammed are firmly established as the greatest event managers India has ever scene. They are distinguished for taking the Bollywood celebs to overseas events.

56

Bollywood vouches for the professionalism they provide; this is what leading Bollywood names have to say: www.AsiansUK.com

“Cineyug to me is like a family” Shah Rukh Khan “I have always enjoyed working with them; they are the most experienced company in live concerts” Amir Khan “Cineyug is a company with whom I have been associated with since I was a child, it is India’s best company and is known for putting up the best shows in the UK, USA and Canada” Kareena Kapoor Where did it all start? CINEYUG entered the world of Indian Entertainment in 1983 initially with Motion Picture Production. Since then it has produced many films including the critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies; Arjun, Vardi, Dum and the award winning Raja Hindustani and Damini. Recognising the fanaticism for Bollywood-based entertainment in India and abroad, Cineyug diversified into bringing the silver screen superstars to perform LIVE in front of hundreds of thousands of people around the globe. Having staged its

first live concert in London in 1989, Cineyug has been taking Indian events and experiences global ever since… Today, Cineyug is the name behind 2500+ LIVE events and concerts, some of which have been the largest produced by any Indian company ever. Over the last 31 years, we have entertained a live audience of over 2 million people and have reached the homes of over 1 billion television viewers. From Award Functions, Arena Events and Dream Weddings to Television Shows and Theatrical Productions; Cineyug’s efforts have always been recognised as revolutionary in the Indian entertainment industry. Our Sports and Entertainment Marketing divisions have also met with resounding success. Cineyug has now grown to service allied businesses in the entertainment value chain with its ventures in Artist Management, Celebrity Endorsements, Weddings, Pyrotechnics and Special Effects.

One of the men who you could say has

Bollywood at his fingertips

57 www.AsiansUK.com

You’re distinguished for delivering flawless events with the ability to bring together the best of Bollywood. As most Bollywood celebs are also competitors how do you successfully manage to unite them under one roof? You are right; we work with multiple celebs at the same time on the same platform as we have a very good working relationship with Celebrities thanks to our dedicated team of Artist management and our Board of Director’s. Their passion and commitment brings these Celebrities together and ensures them a cut above the competition. I would like to give credit to the Artist Management Team for the same.

You are the force behind the UK’s biggest Bollywood events, Temptations 2004 and a decade later the 2014 Slam Tour; as you know British Asians are loyal Bollywood fans – so is there any chance of more frequent Bollywood concerts here in the UK? Yes, the process is on, we are coming up with few more Concerts; I can promise you that the gap this time will not be of a decade - rather it would be a couple of months . UK is like a second home to us and we love them for the love and support they gave us during our Slam Tour in October 2014.

It is said ‘if you want to get to Shah Rukh Khan, forget his PR, you need to go through the Morani brothers’. How have you established such a close relationship with

58 www.AsiansUK.com

the second richest actor in Hollywood and Bollywood?

We have been closely working with Shah Rukh Khan for more than two decades. Cineyug and Shah Rukh Khan have grown together in their respective fields. We have co-produced a couple of films in association with Shah Rukh Khan’s company. Morani Brother’s and Shah Rukh Khan have developed a long lasting relationship over the two decades. As quoted by Shah Rukh Khan “Cineyug to me is like a family”. Apart from the personal relationship he also admires the professional commitment shown by Cineyug while working on any projects.

What is the secret to being able to forming effective and close relations across the board with the B-Town stars and not fall into any particular camp?

We are now 31 years into the business of LIVE events and have worked with each and every celebrity from the time they were debutants in Bollywood. On the whole we have given all Bollywood celebrities of today their first live event and introduced them to the world. Therefore we have a very strong bonding and relationship. They look up to us as mentors: for Example – the 21st Life Ok Screen Awards which took place on the 14th of January, 2015, here we provided Tiger Shroff his first live event to showcase his action and dancing skills.

As with many high-profile families you’re riddled with your fair share of controversy, how do you manage to keep above this and focussed on your goals? Yes, like every family cross the globe

we have our share of ups & downs, but fortunately we have managed to keep our personal and professional lives apart. Our focus, passion and commitment is to entertain and that keeps us going.

What is the secret to hosting a flawless event?

It is our Experience of doing this for thirty years and the fact that we are still learning every day that makes us perform as we do. The tastes of the audience and Entertainment Technology are evolving everyday by leaps and bounds. Cineyug with its dedicated and passionate team fuels our hunger to maintain the no 1 position.

What has been your greatest moment as a Cineyug Director?

There are euphoric moments of a project well delivered and of doing a concert with praises from everyone. But the greatest moment is experienced when I wake up every morning with ideas brimming in my mind and with projects on my desk to execute. Being able to do what I love & love what I do; that is my Greatest Moment as a Cineyug Director everyday…

What’s in the pipeline?

We have a venue based initiative across India and some exciting international projects coming up. Additionally, music is the soul of life and we have a very novel Music Concert series across the world coming up. There are people who get up and dream, we get up and deliver… So do follow us for interesting updates… @Cineyug Cineyug

In Her Own Skin –

The Sonam Kapoor

59 www.AsiansUK.com

Z I B W O H S

Starting the year with a woman-centric romantic comedy film and many more plum assignments in her kitty; 2015 is a promising year for Sonam Kapoor. Judge her as you may, the Kapoor girl has made an impression with her wardrobe choices and remarkable films. Sonam is in no hurry, she is here to stay! Having worked with established and top film makers, you are now also working with newcomer directors. What made you take such a bold step? I don’t think on those lines at all. If you look at my career graph you’ll realize that I have never been stuck to any formula. I do not do a film because I want to become a big actress. When I feel the script is correct and working for the film will be a fine experience then I just go for it! Are you happy with your career graph? I hope I keep getting exciting films where I get to express myself and not just look like a pretty face. Eventually, the pretty face is going to go away and I don’t plan to stop acting. This is my job, I don’t plan to get married to a rich industrialist at the age of 32 and quit working. It does not work that way for me - I am thinking long term. Every year I need to get better at my craft or excel in what I do. I need to be as good as the people I look up-to and for that I need to do films that would hone my talent. Comedy, drama or thriller I want to cover all genres. You have vast social media following; how active are you on it? Honestly, I enjoy social networking sites a lot. It’s very entertaining and amazing to connect with your audience across the globe. With so many media channels speculating and or confusing messages during translation, social media presents an opportunity for us to clarify things and directly relay our thoughts. I love posting pictures, sharing experiences; it’s creative and gets you closer to fans. You are a real fashionista. Do we see you starting your own designer wear in the future? Yes, for real girls and it’s going to be very reasonable. I will be making clothes for all sizes and everybody, from skinny to not-sothin girls. I think girls will be very happy!

Sonam is in no hurry, she is here to stay! 60 www.AsiansUK.com

What are your upcoming projects? I am doing a film with Salman Khan, exactly after eight years, called Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. It’s a romantic Sooraj Bharjatya film about love and family. It’s not a 3 scenes and songs film, it’s the strength of the character and the scenes that matter. I have to be relevant in the film or I cannot do it. Salman and I have equal screen space; otherwise you cannot make a romantic film. I am super excited about it. Apart from this I am doing other films but will mention when the time is right.

“”

I do not do a film because I want to become a big actress.

In your last film Dolly Ki Doli you were the solo heroine, in such cases do you feel under greater pressure? This was not my only film as a solo heroine! My earlier films like Ranjhnaa and Khubsoorat have had me as the solo heroine. Besides, each and every character in the film is vital and impactful. So

there is no solo pressure at all. In this film we had talented actors like the national award winner Rajkumar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun and Mohan Joshi. It’s a very different film with a fantastic team. How difficult is it for you to get into the characters that you play and do you relate yourself to the roles? It has not been easy; it was particularly difficult to play Dolly. This is because Dolly is neither Mili nor Zoya; she was not a regular girl. She had grey shades in her, and had no guilt whatsoever. She does not apologise for any of her mistakes, and is Quite a character. If she had cops behind her, she would know exactly how to respond to them. I had to work a lot on my body language to play Dolly. I had to sit down with the writer of the film Uma and get the diction and attitude of the character in place. In real life, I am a total city girl; therefore it took me enormous effort to get into the role of this character. I am not a north Indian girl; I am a modern Juhu girl from a film family. With all the roles I have played so far I can say I am content, but it is very tough to get into the characters.

From Sawaariya to Mausam, everybody wants me to be this girlnext-door; this is completely against my image. You say you are different from most of the characters you have done, so why do you feel directors select you for such contrary roles? Many directors respect my talent. If you speak to the director of Ranjhnaa - Anand L Rai, he would tell you that he could not think of anyone else but me to play Zoya. For the film Khubsoorat, Shashank Ghosh had just me in mind to play the role of Mili. Directors choose actors as per their vision and thereafter it’s the actor’s responsibility to live up-to the expectations. So we have to do our homework and prepare well. Each of the directors views you in their own perspective. I think my biggest achievement is that I have not been typecast into any particular image so far. You certainly went viral - how did you achieve such record breaking online figures? Because I’m sexy… I would honestly say I have no idea. It was written in my kismet. I am thankful and appreciative of where I am today.

“” I pursued Performing Arts. At that time I was the only Asian person in the class

Tell us a bit about your background and how you entered a career in comedy? When I was young I was the clown of the family. This character followed me into school and college and I did a lot of silly stuff to get people’s attention. Whilst studying I realised being a comedian was my career path and I pursued Performing Arts. At that time I was the only Asian person in the class, I had to work much harder to prove myself; this was a great learning experience that helped to get me to where I am today. How did you come up with the idea of Badman? I did not want to go down the traditional route of auditioning for parts as I would have been typecast and not had enough artistic control. I felt that YouTube was a great avenue for me to express myself

and I decided to develop Diary of a Badman ba sed on a stereotypical boy in the hood who learns something at the end of ever episode.

YouTube was a great avenue for me to express myself

Tell us a little about Black Brown, Bubblegum and Badman Blogs. Why did you decide to develop these different shows? After Diary of a Badman I was undertaking projects behind the scenes which inspired me to channel my energies into the directions of these three shows. Badman Blogs are a follow on from Diary of a Badman. Black Brown was about me getting up to mischief with my sidekick Jazzy in the show. Bubblegum is based on a typical Asian Dad in a shop and it is about the everyday problems he faces. Why do you think your shows have been so popular with people from all backgrounds? I think my looks have a big part to play; I am a very good looking man! In all seriousness I think the comedy is universal and I have had to make sure I keep responding to what the audiences want. Where do you find the inspiration for your characters from? Telling you this is risking my life, but the guy I play in Bubblegum is an over exaggerated version of my Dad, that character is older than Badman. Badman’s character is based on stereotypes of the typical Asian boys who I knew from my hood.

Arranged Marriage. Later D-Dark, a producer on the Urban scene, was involved in production. I am also working with the likes of Mumzy and Rude Kid on future tracks. Who do you look up to? I love my parents, I look up to them as I see how hard they have had to work and if it was not for their support I would not have got this far. In the comedy scene definitely Kevin Hart he is so versatile as a comedian, definitely my inspiration! Why have you decided to promote your upcoming tours independently? One of the largest global companies approached me to promote my tours I decided not take them up on this offer. I realised I could promote my tour better than them as I have creative ideas. I want my tour to be big, man can’t live with a Tassio watch – I need a Rolex! What are your plans for the future and where do you want to take the brand Humza Productions? I think I want to be where Kevin Hart is. I want to be in the mainstream and represent the Asian community. Businesswise we have thought about helping emerging comedians and

Do you write your material or improvise and freestyle? I do write but a lot of it is improvised. I love making jokes on the spot. I always write a backbone for the

Your songs like the Badman rap etc have been really successful. How did you produce them and did you work with music producers? The first few tracks were beat box with special effects on top like the Lotta Riddim, Jam that Hype and

Do you have any exclusive news for us? I’m working with a mainstream channel on some exciting new projects. I’m also writing a film, so watch this space. One prediction I would like to make is that this I will be part of the mainstream. By A.Raffia

Sonakshi Sinha started as an overnight sensation with her first film Dabangg. Far from being a bratty star-kid, Sonakshi despite an iconic lineage is undoubtedly your girl-next door. The spirited and grounded actress talks about her upcoming movies, life and more… www.AsiansUK.com

“” I believe in comfort above everything else

“” With me it’s always what you see is what you get

Having worked with Ajay Devgn and Prabhudeva many times, most recently recently in Action Jackson tell us your chemistry with them? I think working again with someone repeatedly makes the equation more relaxed and familiar. What I like most about them both is that they are thorough professionals and know their job. What do we not know about Sonakshi Sinha? With me it’s always what you see is what you get. So you probably know everything about me since I’ve made my debut 4 years back! Except maybe that I’m ambidextrous - did you know that? Give us your take on fashion, considering you are a certified fashion designer? Well, fashion is something that’s always changing, always evolving and something that everyone is always running after to fit into. Style, now that’s something personal. I believe in comfort above everything else. I love shopping in Dubai and London. Do you have a certain beauty/ fitness regime? I don’t have a beauty regime. But I do believe in letting my skin breathe so when I don’t have to apply makeup, I steer clear from it. I work out 5 to 6 times a week and it consists of weight training and cardio. I have also started practicing yoga recently.

What does family mean to you? How would you describe your equation with your mum, dad and twin brothers? Family always comes first for me. It’s because of them I am who I am today and wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, they are always on my mind. My parents are conservative yet they give me enough space to be my own person and make my own decisions. My brothers are older than me so they’re usually the ones I turn to for guidance and help. What is your ideology on Love? Also do you see yourself with an industry man or outside of it? Love is something that can’t be forced and happens when you least expect it to. I don’t know who I see myself with but I hope it’s someone tall and who can make me laugh all the time. Marriage is not on my mind right now, I have to find the right person for that first, and when I do, I won’t think twice. I’d like to have a very simple and private wedding but I doubt that will happen with the kind of social circle my family has! What do you think of the varied nasty linkups and rumours we have been hearing of you being paired up with actors? They are part and parcel of the job I guess. It’s sad that in today’s day and age two people cannot work together or step out together without being linked together. It’s stupid. Would you say you are a tech savvy actress? Are you in favour of the social networking sites? Yes I am. I’m very active on my social networking sites because they’re a direct link to my fans and the people who actually matter

without having to go through a middle source. It’s the best way to gauge reactions to a film or generally stay updated with what’s happening around you. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? I don’t know where I see myself the day after tomorrow so I’m pretty sure I can’t answer this question now! Your next holiday destination is likely to be? I would love to go to the Maldives. It’s been on my list for a while now. How would you describe your journey from Dabangg until now? It has been ‘Eventful’. Do you have ‘Best friends’ in the industry? Tell us about your favourite co-actors? Most of my best friends are not from this industry. They are people I have known since school and college. But I would say that I’ve always shared a great rapport with the people I’ve worked with, be it Salman, Akshay, Ranveer, Shahid or Arjun. Do you consider any of the actress’s as your competition? I don’t. I don’t see them as competition because it wasn’t ever a dream for me to become an actress. This was destiny’s plan for me. I’m here to do this because I love my job, and that is it. I only want to be better than what I was yesterday. Given a chance, where would you like to reside? Well, I would love to live in L.A or New York. What are your plans for 2015? To take up roles very different to the ones I have been doing. Yes, that’s it; I want to tap into my full potential. I don’t know if I will or if I can, but I can surely try! www.AsiansUK.com

Z I B W O H S Amar Akbar & Tony, an independent production by writer/director Atul Malhotra and marks his feature film debut. A romantic comedy drama depicting the lives of three childhood friends in the unique and vibrant landscape of multicultural London. The title is inspired by the 1970’s Bollywood hit ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ and also ‘takes in a spiritual influence from the film.’ says Malhotra A Sikh, Muslim and Irish Catholic take stock of their lives in contemporary London as the film explores the predicaments that face its lead trio. Amar (Rez Kempton - Mystic Masseur, Spooks) is a Sikh whose promising legal career gets derailed, Akbar (Sam

AMAR AKBAR & TONY Vincenti - Waking The Dead, Alfie) is an ambitious charmer with the gift of the gab and some acute observations on life, while Tony (Martin Delaney - Zero Dark Thirty, Flags of Our Fathers) constantly finds himself in love with the wrong woman. The 93-minute movie is a seriocomic exploration of ambition and friendship being thwarted by external factors. The film identifiably belongs to the multicultural Britain of the present, and the problems faced by the trio transcend time and place. The original soundtrack and score for the film is composed by prolific and ground-breaking music producer Rishi Rich. Director Malhotra’s vision is to represent the vibrant and diverse

nature of London’s cosmopolitan landscape and explore all its complexities. He comments: “Amar Akbar & Tony is a film with British humour and an Indian heart. At its core are universal predicaments, problems and values experienced by people irrespective of culture. The film portrays the selfassuredness and determination of the multicultural youth of London. It’s a celebration of the bonds that tie us together through friendship, love and family. It’s been a pleasure to work with such a talented cast and I can see a lot of them destined for very big things in the future.” Amar Akbar & Tony will be released on selected screens across the country on 17th April 2015.

Walt Disney feature British Asian Singer

The soundtrack of Walt Disney Record’s Cinderella features a song performed by British Asian singer Sonna Rele.

Sonna is a London based singer and song-writer signed to Motown Records by 3 times Grammy winner NE YO. Featuring in a Walt Disney blockbuster is a huge win for British Asians in the music industry and evident that talent can shine through. Within the soundtrack Sonna performs the end credit original theme song “Strong” (written by Patrick Doyle, Kenneth Branagh and Tommy Danvers) and produced by TommyD (Kylie, Kanye West, Corinne Bailey Rae, FUN).

DJ Limelight Brit Asian Music Round up Welcome to another instalment by myself, DJ Limelight. 2015 has definitely kicked off in the right way for the British Asian Music scene. Presenting my weekly radio show on BBC Asian Network (Saturdays 9pm-Midnight), we’ve been supporting a lot of new music. Most noticeably the latest releases by Zack Knight; a new single by Tazzz Artist and the continuous production and artist work by Mumzy Stranger. For this edition I thought it would only be right to update you guys on what these three multi-talented artists/producer have in stall for 2015. Mumzy Stranger Having released a new song for charity ‘Pray’ and produced a brand new track for a new artist called Zaide, titled ‘Don’t You Ever Change’ it’s fair to say the Bengali, East London resident is busy working on many new tracks for the new year. Pray touches on the politic topics of the problems going on around the world. All proceeds go to charity and I must say if anyone had to touch on this topic it was Mumzy Stranger. Speaking to Mumzy recently, he is also releasing a free 4 track Mixtape. Keep up to date with the singer/producer on Twitter: @MumzyStranger

Knight on my radio show a month ago, it’s great to see the vocalist back and building a momentum in releasing music. Having signed a deal with T-Series, touching new boundaries, Zack Knight has released ‘Dheere’ which spins off a classic and then ‘Lamhe’ which has proven to be a popular track amongst Brit-Asians as it reached number 1 on the Official Asian Download Chart. 2015 will for sure be an exciting year for the Essex resident. Twitter: @iamzackknight Tazzz Artist It seems like something in the water is giving the East London Brit-Asian artists the kick up in 2015. Another notable Producer/Artist is Tazzz. Having released some great music in 2014 such as ‘Teardrops’ which features Raxstar and Rita Morar, 2015 has started off with a very big, positive messaged song by the name of Ayaan. Based on a young boy being told he can achieve all his goals in life, what touches me the most about this song is the video. Filmed in Pakistan you get to embrace the richness of the village life. The track is a spin off from the popular track ‘Airplanes’ by B.o.B. Twitter: @TazzzArtist Keep in touch with me DJ Limelight via Twitter: @ DJLimelightUK

East is East sensation

Mr Om Rajesh Puri OBE As perhaps one of India’s most recognisable acting exports, Om Puri has amassed more than 250 feature film critics in his four decades in front of the camera. Born in Patiala, in the north of India, Puri is beloved at home and abroad, having played roles in mainstream and independent cinema in India, the United States and the UK. His film debut came in 1976, in the Marathi film GHASHIRAM KOTWAL, and Puri rode the Indian New Wave of the 70s and early 80s, starring in some of the country’s most memorable art-house classics and taking roles in some of Bollywood’s biggest successes. He had a cameo role in Richard Attenborough’s GHANDI, in 1982, but he credits a turn opposite Patrick Swayze and Pauline Collins ten years later, in Roland Joffe’s CITY OF 72 www.AsiansUK.com

JOY, as kick-starting his English-language career. Hollywood roles include the likes of WOLF, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS and CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR. Equally at home in British cinema, few can forget Puri’s turn in 1999 hit EAST IS EAST, in which Puri played the patriarch of a mixedethnicity family settling into Salford, Greater Manchester in the 1970s. A sequel, WEST IS WEST, followed in 2010. In THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY, Puri again plays a proud Indian patriarch, this time leading his family to a sleepy French village in which he intends to open an Indian restaurant and bring a taste of home to a people whose cuisine has been unchanged for hundreds of years. And there’s a catch: he’s opening opposite a Michelin-starred legend.

This is a hard film to watch on an empty stomach. The obvious first question is: can you cook as well as the film suggests? I think I’m the senior of the group when it comes to cooking. I have been cooking from the age of 14. There used to be competitions. I used to watch my mother, and if we went to anybody’s house I would be curious to ask them, “How did you prepare it? What did you put in it?” etc. etc. I find it relaxing. It’s like doing yoga for me.

Do you have a signature dish?

My preference is still vegetarian. I can’t have a full non-veggie meal. I have to have vegetables. I love lentils and I love yoghurt. I can cook chicken and prawns, but it’s mainly vegetarian. Also, I don’t indulge in cooking where you have to spend a lot of time. There

are a lot of Indian dishes where you have to spend bloody half a day cooking one dish. I don’t much use ground spices, which have a mixture of various things. I prefer to use the whole spice. I improvise a lot with food, too, and try to match things. Most of the time I have been successful in making a mixture.

Most actors are lucky to have one role of a lifetime in their careers. You’ve had many. Did this immediately leap out to you as something like that?

I was excited and absolutely thrilled. Look at the names associated with it, starting with Steven Spielberg who is a master of cinema. He is so diverse and so prolific and versatile in his filmmaking. When I met him for the first time in America, for the premiere, I looked at him and said, “God, such a tiny body and he has so much talent inside.” He’s very gentle and very sweet, and he met me very warmly. Oprah Winfrey is another great human being. She visited the set also and it was a great pleasure meeting her. In fact, I gifted her book I was reading, which was about spiritualism and meditation. Lasse Hallstrom is a great director. And then finally you had Dame Helen Mirren. To work opposite her is a dream for any actor. I was absolutely thrilled by this project.

and credibility as an actor, and commercial cinema gave me bread and butter. I created a balance – the right kind of balance – between the two.

How did you break out internationally?

It started with CITY OF JOY in 1992. I had a big part with Patrick Swayze, and I received very good reviews in America. With that film, gradually roles started coming and I did a lot of work in Britain. I did three or four Canadian films, and six or seven American films. Cameos, but good cameos, you know. I worked only with stars, whether it was Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Patrick Swayze, Val Kilmer or Michael Douglas. THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY IS AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY AND DVD, COURTESY OF ENTERTAINMENT ONE

What’s your view on British Indians?

Most Indians are very enterprising. Way back in the 40s and 60s, the people who came from India were essentially the labour class. Then, gradually, they had families here and became part of this society. But they came here with nothing; almost penniless and in 10 years’ time they’ve become millionaires. They don’t spend very much – they’re not indulgent. They save and they keep growing their business.

You’ve done more than 250 films. Looking back, what has allowed such longevity?

In Indian mainstream cinema a face like mine didn’t fit . If Anthony Quinn had been born in India, he’d still be struggling; he wouldn’t find a main role to play. Fortunately, during the period I came in the mid-70s, the New Wave cinema was coming up. The films required natural faces not pretty, chiselled faces to play main parts. I was part of that cinema, and gradually, because of the wonderful performances, the mainstream cinema noticed. They started offering substantial parts – although never the main lead. But there was very little money in art cinema. Art cinema gave me prestige and dignity 73 www.AsiansUK.com

Promising British Asian Racing Driver “He is the only British Asian in single-seat formula racing.” Zubair Hoque is one lap closer to achieving his Formula One ambitions after finishing as the ‘top rookie’ in the standings of the 2014 BRDC Formula 4 Winter Series Championship. The Hale, Cheshire, based teenager, who drove for team HHC Motorsport, crowned this year’s debut in single-seater racing by closing an impressive fifth overall in the current F4 standings, despite competing against vastly more experienced drivers. He is the only British Asian in singleseat formula racing. The BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club) F4 Winter Series was hotly contested, attracting drivers from as far away as Brazil and Mexico over the Snetterton and Brands Hatch circuits and it served as a ‘shakedown’ in preparation for the 2015 F4 Championship. Zubair had his first outing in the one–make F4 category in November - and made an instant impression. “He showed flashes of promise on his first car racing weekend at Snetterton,” says HHC’s Commercial Director Charlie Kemp,“ and put in an excellent performance despite treacherous track conditions.”

78

“Zubair has since shown consistent and steady improvement over the remainder of the Series and I expect great things for him in the 2015 F4 Championship which launches at www.AsiansUK.com

Oulton Park in April of next year.” No stranger to track success, Zubair,18, has clocked up an impressive tally of finishing positions and lap records over a 10 year, progressive career in kart racing, before making his move into F4 in October. (following a one year break for academic study and exams) Starting at the age of 8 at the Daytona circuit in Manchester he was fast tracked to junior race schools and then made a series of progressive team moves, ending with the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team – one of Europe’s top karting teams and the most successful in the KF2 category in Britain. In KF2 he competed with some of the best drivers in the world, aged 14 and upwards. He achieved three podium finishes in the KF2 MSA British Championship in 2012 and top 10 finishes in international events across 13 different countries. After signing with HHC Motorsport and making the move into single seater racing a few months ago, Zubair was recently invited to attend the iZone Driver Performance facility at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. It’s the UK’s leading driver training facility, developed by triple World Touring Car champion, Andy Priaulx. “The timing was perfect because I was able to go along in advance of my race at Brands Hatch and get to spend some time on their state of the art simulator, which proved to be extremely useful,” said Zubair. “Although Brands Hatch Indy is a

short circuit it features some tricky corners and this amazing piece of equipment helped me to familiarise myself with the layout of the track.” Looking towards his first full season in F4, he adds:”It will be an exciting, but challenging year ahead and my key focus will be on getting to grips with the set- up of the car in readiness for the early stages. “There is a lot to learn in terms of the finely tuned technology of the car – aerodynamics, gears and so on – and there will be additional physical demands too, so another emphasis will be on making sure I am race fit to compete at a whole new level in 2015.”

Jr Bachchan’s Passion For Football In an exclusive interview with AsiansUK, Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has given an insight into the hands-on role he has played with Hero Indian Super League (ISL) side Chennaiyin FC. Bachchan, Vita Dani and Indian cricketer MS Dhoni own the Chennai-based franchise that was cobbled together at short notice following Bangalore’s late withdrawal from last year’s inaugural ISL. Chelsea football club fanatic Bachchan credits his father legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh – for introducing him to the sport he calls the ‘beautiful game’. “I’m as passionate about football as anybody else” Bachchan told AsiansUK. “My father first introduced me to football and growing up in a British boarding school I was always surrounded by it. I have been a football fan for as long as I can remember and I am happy that today I get to be a co-owner of a team and get to help bring the beautiful game to India” “I try to be as hands on as possible as an owner. I’m not someone who just likes to come and sit in the stands and just wave out to the crowd. I like to be involved. I know my boys personally and enjoy spending time with them as well as attending training sessions. I occasionally train with them, although I do not usually make it past the warm-up because their fitness levels are on a different sphere to mine! But we spend a great deal of time together and have regular team meetings along with Vita; so I was am very involved.” Adds Jr Bachchan Chennaiyin’s player boss is World Cup and Champions League winner Marco Materazzi; he has guided the team to the ISL semi-finals and is now signed on as the club’s manager next year.

Bachchan lifted the lid on the close relationship he enjoys with Materazzi and is delighted to have had the chance to work with elitelevel players including Elano and Mikael Silvestre. “It’s been a fantastic journey,” Bachchan said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great players and make a huge difference to football in India. I have definitely seen the standard of football amongst Indian boys improving. “Marco, Vita and I have hand-picked the team. I remember going to Rome on September 1st to speak to Marco for the very first time and got him on board.

I have been a football fan for as long as I can remember

Even then, when he was back in Italy we would be on the phone every night, analysing video footage and our squad in order to gage the types of players we wanted to bring in. So this is a team and a squad that has been picked with a lot of hard work and it’s something Marco, Vita and I have been very hands-on with and involved in.” By Dev Trehan @DevTrehan To keep posted on the progress of Chennaiyin FC follow them on twitter: @ChennaiyinFC Hear more from Abhishek Bachchan follow him: @juniorbachchan

We managed to catch Fazeldin between his training sessions:

How did you enter the boxing? I fell in love with boxing since childhood, after watching it on television – from here on in I knew I wanted to become a boxer. Initially my father did not agree, hence pursued his choice and obtained a diploma within aeronautical engineering; following this I finally gained the blessings of my family.

Starting as an amateur I progressed into professional boxing after a successful win ratio.

Who makes up your back up team?

My family is always behind me, but when it comes to training and within the gym it is my trainer Ali Hamed (Prince

Naseem’s older brother). Ali Hamed is someone I can rely on to put me through a gruelling training regime.

Who has been your greatest inspiration and why? Prince Naseem Hamed – Watching him as a child ignited my passion

My Father – His dedication and handling of life, even when faced by some challenging circumstances has been a primary source of motivation

Do you feel there is adequate support for young people who aim to pursue boxing at a professional level, please explain?

Yes, most definitely I think with the current awareness of sport within communities, growth is imminent in local clubs and foundations. Looking from the outside in it may seem there isn’t, but if you visit amateur clubs you’ll find a vast number of new faces progressing up the ranks and transitioning themselves to the professional arena. The main problem lies when a new professional boxer needs to raise his profile and successfully sell tickets for his fight. Young professionals need more support in selling tickets and gaining awareness through schemes and foundations to boost their profile away from boxing.

What are your ambitions?

World champion in three years time in Super Bantam weight, then progressing into becoming champion in different weight divisions. A strong contender as the next SuperBantamweight World Champion, follow his journey: @muheebfaz
