Property programme saves £16.6m A ten-year programme by Bradford Council to dispose of surplus property and make savings through more efficient ways of working has so far saved the authority around £16.6m. The Property Programme is a ten year 'invest to save' plan to vacate and dispose of surplus properties and improve the quality and efficiency of the buildings the council is retaining. This has been assisted by introduction of the New Ways of Working team, which enables staff to work flexibly from a variety of locations and reducing work stations so that ten staff share seven work stations. The programme, which started in 2009, is now in its sixth year, and by the end of 2014/15 will have made gross revenue savings of £16.4 million, £31m in capital receipts from disposal of surplus properties and cut the Council's backlog maintenance bill by £48m. It is forecast to have made £36.6m of revenue savings by the time the programme ends in 2018/19. A report to the council's Executive on 14 April seeks approval for the 'invest to save' schemes to be started this year: •A £3m scheme to create a new depot on a freehold site at Bowling Back Lane, to replace the depots at

Shearbridge and Harris Street and the Tramshed on Wakefield Road Depot site. These sites would then be vacated and disposed of. •A £640k investment in refurbishment and maintenance work on Shipley Library and £200k on alterations to enable additional services to be run from the building. •A £140k scheme to provide laptops and mobile working equipment to enable the vacation and disposal of office accommodation, saving £720k over five years. •A £2.0m scheme to carry out essential building improvements to nine properties, including the £900k fourth phase of repairs to City Hall roof, £115k energy efficient boiler for Queens Hall, Ilkley and the

replacement of the roof at Valley View Children's residential home, costing £198k. Feasibility work is also underway to enable staff to move out of Jacobs Well to allow a £20m investment by private sector developers to create a public service hub and the relocation of the Museums Stores service to improve archiving and free up existing buildings for disposal. The programme is nearing its nearing its end date and the Council's estate is more sustainable now than it was before 2009. The New Ways of Working programme, also close to completion, has resulted in over 2,000 employees being equipped to work flexibly.

with their children about what is happening.

Media reports have recently suggested teachers are very concerned that pupils may use the bank holiday break to try to travel to Syria and Iraq.

Saleha Jaffer, founder of Families Against Stress and Trauma, said: “Enough is enough. We can no longer sit by and watch as children from across the country are stolen from families by the lies and false promises made by extremists.

In order to stop this, FAST encourage families to take action to safeguard their children from the risks posed by extremists who are targeting vulnerable young people online. Even if parents don’t think their child is at risk, it is important that all parents take the opportunity to have a frank and open discussion

Families Against Stress and Trauma (FAST) is an organisation which provides support to vulnerable families and individuals at risk of radicalisation.

“As parents it is important that we take responsibility and play our part in stopping children travelling to Syria or Iraq, to join perpetrators of the most evil and heinous crimes. “It is vital that we understand the risks our children face and are able to engage with

able to engage with them in order to have a frank and honest two-way conversation about this complicated subject. The long weekend offers the chance for families to take the time to listen to their children’s thoughts on the difficult topics that have been hitting in the headlines in recent months and offer advice and support if they are feeling alone or confused by what they are hearing and seeing.”

FAST has been visiting communities across the UK this month, talking to parents and families with the aim of empowering them to tackle this threat to their children. The organisation’s new website www.familiesmatter.org.uk. provides online advice for parents on how to approach these issues with their children, identifying signs of radicalisation and where to turn to for help.

Allison, 37, failed to turn up at court in February last year when he was due to be sentenced for two sexual assaults. Allison, formerly of New Street in Idle, was sentenced to 30 months in his absence. The offences occurred against two women at licensed premises in Yeadon, Leeds in June 2013. Enquiries made by Bradford District's Public Protection Unit and Interpol traced him to Australia, where he had been working on construction sites. He was located in January this year and subsequently held in a detention centre, while arrangements were made for him to be returned to the UK. He was brought back to England on March 31 and is expected to attend court before being transferred to prison.

By Aalia Khan T: @AaliaAsNews E: aalia@asiansunday.co.uk Students from Bradford College are hosting a charity fundraising event for Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity on Thursday 16 April 2015. The charity was set up to raise funds for state-of-the art equipment for critically ill babies, children and teenagers, as well as play, rest and therapy facilities. The ‘Taste of South Asia’ themed event will be held in the new Grove Restaurant in the College's David Hockney Building. The students: Chris Hanson, Sanaa Benlemaallem, Lorraine Ndlovu, Mateusz Tomczak and Kristine Zviedre from the Foundation Degree in Travel and Hospitality Management were tasked with hosting the event as part of a course assignment. Caring student, Chris Hanson explained: “We all came up with ideas and I suggested holding a charity dinner as I had previously met Naz Rafiq, a fundraising volunteer for the charity. I thought it would be a great opportunity for all of us to help raise money for such a worthy cause.” Naz Rafiq added: “I do a lot of volunteer work for the charity

because my son unfortunately passed away 7 years ago with Congenital Myopathy. The experience has made me quite passionate about trying to help support other parents who find themselves in similar circumstances.” In November 2014 Naz won Bradford’s Volunteer of the Year Award for her tireless work to help parents and families of babies born prematurely. Guests from across the Hospitality and Travel industry and the general public attending the event will be helping to support the local charity. On arrival, they will be welcomed with a cocktail/mocktail reception, whilst dancers from Welcome to Yorkshire 2014 Finalists, Kala Sangam will provide the entertainment. Lorraine Ndlovu devised the drinks menu, elaborating further she said: “I wanted to ensure the drinks had an Asian theme to compliment the evening so I went online to gain inspiration. Initially I looked at Bollywood movies, Asian retailers and then decided to base the names on Asian places. Mateusz Tomczak, a professional Chef from Jamie Oliver’s Restaurant in Leeds devised the fabulous 3 course South Asian menu. . Bradford College students will work alongside Mateusz to freshly prepare and cook the outstanding

menu for diners during the course of the evening. Ticket’s cost £20.00 per head and include a glass of wine. Chef Mateusz said: “It’s going to be the first time I cook this type of menu, but I think it will be a good opportunity for me and everybody else to help the charity.” Elaborating further on how she felt to be involved in the fundraising initiative, Kristine Zviedre added: “I think it’s going to be a great event and good experience for us to organise the dinner, whilst also raising money for charity.” The event provides an excellent opportunity to network, whilst also showcasing up and coming talent of the future.Hospitality Lecturer Clare Dodsley has been overseeing the event and comments: “The students have all assessed their individual skills and are contributing their unique attributes to the event. They have worked well together so far and the event is set to be a success. It will hopefully generate a substantial donation for a local charity close to the students’ hearts. ” For further information on how to book your tickets (this is a limited ticket event) please contact Chris Hanson on: 07841626297 or email Christine.hanson@hotmail.com

Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries service will be up against five other organisations in the educational initiative category which are the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds; Derby Museums; Imperial War Museum; Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the North of England Civic Trust. Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s Executive member for Employment, Skills and Culture, said: “I’m delighted Bradford has been shortlisted for this award and that 1,000 children have already taken part in the project. We should celebrate all the nominees for their fantastic achievements in the communities where they work or volunteer. Youth Award Due to the hospitalisation of finalist, Ashleigh Mae Bowers, the panel deemed the category difficult to judge without her profile inclusion. As a result, all three finalists were winners: Ashleigh Mae Bowers, Amy Barker, Melissa Steele. This year’s Special Founders Award was presented to the nurses and admin team on Ward 27 and Endocrinology and Diabetes unit, Bradford Teaching Hospitals. BIWA Founder, Fatima Patel, has suffered health issues since October 2013. Being bed bound for months was deeply challenging and disheartening for someone who has always been active. The nurses played a vital role in helping her maintain dignity and keeping her spirits high. The nurses go out of their way to make patients comfortable and the work they do often goes unnoticed. As a result, the Special Founders Award saluted all nurses, particularly the team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. Editor, Asian Sunday newspaper and BIWA Founder, Fatima Patel, has herself experienced a remarkable and inspirational journey in the past year, which made the cause this year even more personal. She said, “It was lovely to see so many people come together, united for women and equality. As long as inequalities remain for women, the Inspirational Women Foundation will remain in existence and keep promoting, empowering and inspiring.” Jane Vincent, Inspirational Women Foundation and BIWA Co-Founder said, “The awards tonight have been the strongest yet and that is evident from the number of people who have attended today, coming from all parts of the country. It has been a great evening as always and we are proud to once again show off Bradford’s inspirations.”

Sally Layas – Holy Family Catholic School Sally Layas is the Assistant Head Teacher at the Holy Family Catholic School. She has been working at the school for five years and believes in bringing the community and students together. During the Peshawar attacks, she created ‘hugs on offer’ at the school for anyone who needed a hug or support. Sally’s response to the horrific attacks was that love is more powerful than hate and that theme dominated the week at school. She says it was a simple thing to get the kids to spread love and raise awareness of the attacks. Sally believes that, as a teacher, you can’t stop being horrified by such attacks. Most recently, the Gaza/Israel situation really affected her and she and the school are trying to counteract that by advocating unity instead of division.

Teresa Maria Gornall Teresa Maria Gornall is a mother who has undergone many struggles. Eight years ago in her mid 50s, she was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer. She had an operation and suffered a bi lateral stroke as a complication. She was left unable to walk and was told by doctors that she would never walk again. A year later, she was diagnosed with womb cancer. Throughout this time, she underwent physio sessions, yoga and tried many things to improve her chances of walking. Since then, she has walked the Race for Life. Eight years later, she walks with the aid of two sticks and has just returned from an independent trip to Australia to visit her eldest daughter. She continues to support her family and be an active, hands on wife, mum, grandmother and great grandmother.

Saima is the only Asian female rugby league player in the country. She was the first Muslim female to play Rugby League for Yorkshire. The 35-yearold, who is now retired, comes from a Pakistani family who live in Keighley. Saima was first introduced to rugby when she was nine years old. She started playing for her local club, Keighley Cats rugby league team, and was spotted as a potential for regional playoffs. Since starting her journey, she became the first ever Muslim female rugby player to play for both Yorkshire (aged 18) and England Rugby League (aged 20). As a Muslim, she is aware of the problems that girls face. Saima encountered some personal struggles when she began playing rugby. The media published images of her in shorts and this caused concern for her parents about how the sport didn’t allow her to cover her legs. However, their support got her through the negative backlash she faced from the community. The now Sports Development Officer helps raise the profile of women’s rugby league and encourages more women, including Asian women, to become involved.

Liva Alberta Liva moved from Latvia to the UK in 2004 and made Bradford her home. After growing up in poverty and being accustomed to a rationed lifestyle where money was not visible, Liva was ever more determined to improve her lifestyle and get her family out of poverty. So she decided to seek work abroad and ended up moving to the UK with very little spoken English. Liva found a job at Bradford Council working in social services, helping to find housing for the Eastern European communities. It was here Liva found a gap in

the market. She realised that most Eastern Europeans who were coming to the UK didn’t just want standard accommodation but wanted to make this their home and therefore wanted a better lifestyle, so she helped set up Concierge Estates, a company which not only took care of the housing needs of the Eastern European community but treated them like first class citizens and helped them develop their lifestyle in the UK by helping them become homeowners. The success of Liva’s business and entrepreneur skills was further evident when she appeared on the front cover of Forbes magazine.

Amy Barker Amy is a 20-year-old businesswoman. At the age of 18, instead of going to university, with the support of her mum she launched a dress shop business called The Pageant Boutique. Despite being a model A* student, opening a dress boutique had always been a dream of Amy’s. A couple of years down the line she would have opened up her own boutique but has managed to save the expenses of going to university to do so. Amy encountered a few challenges in relation to her age. Not many people took her seriously when she said was opening up a boutique. Amy has proven them wrong. The success of the business has resulted in celebrities and beauty queens buying from her boutique. She has become a confident role model to other young business people by telling them that you don’t have to go to university to be successful. Ashleigh Mae Bowers Ashleigh is a 16-year-old student at Bradford Academy. She has been struggling with an eating disorder and depression for two years. Her eating disorder caused her to stop competing as a dancer. It has been very controlling and has impacted her life massively – everything from getting out of bed to going to school and doing basic tasks. Her health problems have also impacted her family. Ashleigh started a campaign during Eating Disorder Awareness Week to get people involved to help them learn more. She also wrote a number of posts to raise awareness as to what goes on. She organised fundraising activities like getting her friends to wear silly socks to help raise money for BE, an eating disorder charity. Ashleigh still gets help from CAMHS, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and they are still supporting her through it. Melissa Steele Melissa is a 21-year-old recording artist from Bradford. She signed a deal with

Men Standing Up, a domestic abuse charity for men began in September 2014 and has been extremely active since. The service had its official opening launch on Thursday 26th march at Carlisle Business centre which welcomed representatives from all sectors of the community including guest speakers, service users and the media.

Standing Up Speakers at the event ranged from Ian McNicholl, a survivor of domestic abuse, Pamela Mills from West Yorkshire Police, Pete Westwood from Bradford’s NHS trust, Tanni Shaffi – forced marriage and honour based violence and Lucy Cohen from Williscroft and Co solicitors. The speakers touched upon the importance of a domestic abuse service for men and the need for a welcoming space such as MSU in which men can feel safe enough to express their issues and concerns.

Humayun Islam, the service manager said “We want more men to come forward and feel safe to speak to us as the MSU service will believe them. We will provide the appropriate support and signpost to specialist services. We have set up the first Peer Support Group for men suffering domestic abuse. The group is service user lead and also gives men a voice and to discuss their issues in a safe and controlled environment. The Peer Support Group will look at how the Men Standing Up can further develop.”

Since the service began in September 2014, MSU has received 47 referrals for men wanting support and they are currently providing floating support to 14 men in the community. The telephone helpline 0300 3030167 was set up in late December 2014 and has so far had 25 phone calls in January, 19 phone calls in February and to date 20 calls in March. The calls have ranged from men wanting emotional support to housing related support and even legal support. And the statistics are proof that there is massive

need for a domestic abuse service for men. Ean Monk, head of the service said “As the service gets well known we’ll be getting more referrals coming in.” The helpline for the service is 0300 303 0167 and it is active Monday to Friday 10am-1 and 2-5pm. If men aren’t comfortable picking up the phone they can email the service on menstandingup@ bradfordcyrenians.org.uk. Islam and Monk say that men usually call in the latter stages of the abuse but they want them to call at the earlier stages.

WITH RESPECT PROSPECTIVE PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE FOR HALIFAX ASAMA JAVED. By Fatima Patel

B

radford Labour has had it’s fair share of controversies since the beginning of this year. With the farcical selection process of Labour’s Bradford West candidate to having a sensational clear-out of it’s sitting Councillors. Victims of the Labour clear out are Councillor Ruth Billheimer (Eccleshill), Councillor Amir Hussain (Toller), Bradford Council’s executive member for adult services,Councillor Ghazanfer Khaliq (Bradford Moor), a former Lord Mayor, and Councillor Rizwan Malik (Heaton), the chairman of the Council’s corporate overview and scrutiny committee. However, one councillor who refused to stay quiet was former Manningham Councillor Asama Javed. We caught up with the fiery woman, to find out why she joined Respect and her pending judiciary review with the Labour report. As I arrive at the coffee shop Asama Javed greets me with a boo, seeming chirpy and happier than I have ever seen her before. There seems to be passion and fire in her belly, that over the years I’ve known her as a Labour councillor I had never witnessed. Anyway as we get cosy over our hot drinks, I ask her outright why she resigned from Labour and joined Respect. “I left Labour because it breached all the values that I grew up with. Which is fariness, justice and equality, she beamed” “I was elected in May 2011 in Manningham ward with a majority of 3000. In July the same year I fought with the local constituents to stop the closure of Manningham

baths. I stood in the rain despite being diabetic and having high blood pressure fighting for the rights of my electorate. The very next day I was brought up before the whip and I was cautioned why was I standing against them with my electorate? So for me it was hang on The (Labour) Party is telling me what to do and what not to do. That is not the Labour that I know. So since that day something was eating away at me. Also, ever year the same positions were given to the same people in the council. The same chairs the same executives, it was already planned there was no open competition for those positions. No drive for whoever is the most suitable for the job. So I thought this can’t be it. This can’t be why I signed up for politics. “Anyway come this year, I was told all the City councillors had to be re-interviewed, but six months ago I had a telephone call from a well wisher and he told me ‘watch your back labour are going to get rid of you’ This was six months prior to my resignation. “I said why he said ‘Its’ because they are scared of you’ I laughed it off and then low and behold I had my interview and receive an email saying sorry I haven’t been successful and the reason was because I paid my membership fee using my office debit card. That was the only reason along with one other excuse that there was insufficient campaigning from me, which is absolutely rubbish.”

“ I resigned from labour, because I didn’t want to endorse their behav-iour. At the time of resigning I had no inclination to join any other Party, I had just been diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, so I was in no rush to get back in but then I heard about Halifax.”

Ms Javed continued to explain her commitment to the Party and listed all the panels she had sat on, despite this even her appeal had fallen on deaf ears. The Labour Party in her view were unable to give her a satisfactory reason for removing her from her seat of which she has pursued further requesting a judicial review from the Labour party. The review is pending and she hopes to have a hearing soon. I question Asama’s motives for joining Respect to be of rejection from one to acceptance in another. Ms Javed adamantly justifies her reasons to be the reason for joining Respect was because they are old Labour, the same labour whose values she grew up with. “I resigned from labour, because I didn’t want to endorse their behaviour. At the time of resigning I had no inclination to join any other Party, I had just been diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, so I was in no rush to get back in but then I heard about Halifax. Two nights before, 130 members were told they can’t vote. Well that’s just manipulation. For me Labour is not a democracy it’s a dictatorship. They (Labour) are manipulating the people they want into power, so they can choose and have the outcomes that they want and I think it’s a battle for the leadership. It’s as simple as that.” She argued. MS Javed told Asian Sunday that she had written to Ed Milliband, Iain McNicol, Linda McAvan MEP, Ed Balls, Kieth Vaz, Yvette Cooper, regarding regional Labours Party’s decision to remove her from the General Elections, but not one of them wrote back and that furthered her disappointment and reaction to resign. I dig deeper and ask Asama why she chose to stand in Halifax as parliamentary candidate for Respect, when she could have gone for Bradford East. Aside from loyalty towards Labour Cllr Imran Hussain, Asama said “People ask me why I went for Halifax, it’s because I have business in Halifax, I have family in Halifax and have worked in Halifax. In addition to this the fact that there has been injustice to the people of Halifax and where there is injustice I am there. “Labour is being really arrogant and telling Halifax people, you don’t have a choice you will vote us regardless. It doesn’t matter what we do you people are going to vote us and that is the attitude of Labour. So for me it isn’t about winning, but beating the Labour votes and giving people another choice.” Asama sure was on fire, as she shot back with answers, quicker than I could give her questions. I prompt her to talk to me about her direct attack at one of Bradford’s leading

13

businessmen, Mr Amjad Parvez one of the founders of Seafresh. In a press conference held at the Carlisle Business Centre, a week ago, Asama is seen attacking Mr Parvez and challenging him to come and speak to her in person. “I don’t believe in stooping to the same level as other people, where I felt it was important to name and shame two people, I did.” Asama tells me “Simply because Amjad Parvez put on social media “here come the clowns” So in my public press conference I said to Mr Parvez, who previously I had thought to be a good friend, to face me. Say it to my face and then realise who the clown was and that’s all I said. I don’t want to make it personal. People will make up their own conclusions, but I wish people were strong enough to say things direct, rather than hide behind the Labour Party and move forward. Speaking about personal, I ask Asama what her thoughts are about Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for her old ward, Manningham. What are your views about Naz Shah? “On a personal level I don’t know Naz Shah. I am aware of her background. Personally even if I was in the Labour Party and that’s another reason for my resignation, I don’t believe that she is the right candidate for the Labour Party. It’s as simple as that. Getting sympathy by saying or making lies up is wrong, it takes away any credibility or credence she has. I don’t think she is the best or the right candidate for Bradford West.” I challenge Asama and ask so what makes you think you’re the best for Halifax? Well the reason why I know I am the best candidate for Halifax and this is no criticism on Holly [my opposition from Labour] is that she has worked for an MEP, her father is a police officer and mother is a nurse many people in Halifax are working class people. Same background that my parents and grandparents came from, so I identify with the people of Halifax. This isn’t about colour or race. There are areas in Halifax that are more deprived than areas in Bradford. They are predominantly white working class people. We want the best education for our children and the best healthcare from the NHS. Calderdale Royal Hospital is at risk. Labour are getting rid of it, the Tories are thinking of getting rid of it, we need to save that for the future. I am promising them a voice. I am not making any promises, as I have limited resources to work from. What I can promise is transparency and openness and the fact that I will be crying out for people in Parliament, so George (Galloway) has more than one voice in parliament to fight injustice and fairness.” She continues “You don’t have to be a Muslim to be human and know that war is wrong. We have had no pledges from the Labour Party other than one clear pledge and that is that it will be investing £80billion in nuclear weapons. That’s £80billion to kill innocent people. Why can’t it be used for our NHS our education instead? On that note I part with Asama Javed who leaves me with her feisty and prodigious smile, perhaps convincing me that she seems happy to be rebelling against her Party of four years.

Skincare is a huge industry across the world, but that doesn’t mean that you need complicated and expensive chemicals to keep your skin looking great. This edition we look at getting rid of blackheads. Blackheads as “small, dark spots on the skin, caused by a small blockage in the opening of a pore (follicle)”. Blackheads are often the beginning of acne because they trap bacteria in the pores of the skin, leading to infections. One of the most effective natural tools you can use against bacteria is lemon juice. Removing the bacteria from your pores not only removes the blackhead, it prevents further break-outs. Try this simple two-ingredient face mask to get rid of unsightly blackheads. This simple face mask combines the bacteria fighting powers of lemon juice with the moisturizing effects of natural egg whites. The proteins in the egg whites nourish your skin and keep it hydrated. Try this simple remedy, and you’ll be amazed at how well it works.

But, in the very first week, he assured me that I can act, and that I should take up the role.” Kunal also added acting was always something he wanted to try out. SHOWBIZ NEWS Paul Walker`s brother eyeing acting career When waves took Matthew Perry`s shorts away Actor Matthew Perry says he once accidentally ended up without his shorts on a beach, where a group of party-goers stood staring at him. The “Friends” star was walking along the sand when a surprise wave took him from his feet, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “Well, I was walking along the beach one day and I saw a party was happening over the beach, like one of those beach houses and it had a big patio and a big party was happening. “And I was walking underneath the party and a wave came and sort of swept me ashore and swept me off my feet and just threw me into the beach underneath this party and I was given about 15 seconds to compose myself before wave number two came. “And I didn’t get it done in time and the wave

again hit me directly into the shore and by this time, the party has totally stopped and everybody was just staring at me.

Late actor Paul Walker’s younger brothers Caleb and Cody Walker, stepped in to help finish “Furious 7” after their brother was killed in a car crash in November 2013 half way through the production. Now one of the brothers has been bitten by the acting bug. As per sources, Paul’s youngest brother Cody, 26, is getting in touch with Paul’s manager Matt Luber at Luber Rocklin

Entertainment and is taking meetings with Hollywood talent agencies, reports variety.com. Cody, who had no prior professional acting experience before “Furious 7”, plans on pursuing film and television roles beyond the “Fast and Furious” franchise. However, it’s unclear if there would be a role for him in any future instalments in the series. After a lengthy production hiatus,

“So I decided for wave number three -- I’ve seen people do this in movies -- I was going to dive under the wave and I went to dive under and I mistimed it and my shorts came off. I was naked,” he said on “The Late Late Show with James Corden”. The embarrassing event happened during the 45-year-old actor’s 10year stint as Chandler Bing in the popular TV series and he admitted it has since made him less of a “beach guy”. He added: “This is right bang in the middle of ‘Friends’, ‘Why is naked Chandler in front of our house?’ There was no part of it I enjoyed... I’m an alright traveller, I don’t really travel that often. I’m not a beach guy. I’ve had some bad experiences.”

due to the tragic death of star Paul Walker, both Caleb and Cody Walker joined the cast of “Furious 7” to stand in for their brother’s scenes. Elaborate CGI was used by Peter Jackson’s WETA effects house to complete the process. In addition to pursuing acting, Cody is also the brand manager of his late brother’s foundation Reach Out Worldwide, which helps emergency responders get into disaster-stricken areas.

After leaving her sisters Kourtney and Khloe, Kim finds a quiet space where she recalls the conversation to her husband West on the phone.

“When you have your baby, this will be your last one, because the problem is your placenta grew on your uterus, so when you have another baby, your placenta will go right to that hole and then we’ll have a team of doctors waiting right there, to remove your uterus and put you into emergency surgery right there because you can’t bleed too much,” Kim tells her husband. X Factor Audition Pod Reigning In Bradford Talent By Ninder Kaur t: @NinderAsNews e: ninder@asiansunday.co.uk

The X Factor landed in Kirkgate Centre this week to give aspiring singers the opportunity to wow talentspotting judges from the hit TV show. Encased in a specially-constructed X Factor pod, the singers had their performances filmed in front of members of the show’s team, hoping to be deemed good enough to stand a chance of auditioning in front of the show’s celebrity judges this summer. The X Factor team was on the lookout for the nation’s next singing superstar hoping to find talent in our native Bradford. A queue of hopefuls had already been forming since 9:30am right up until 5:30pm on Monday. The mobile tour is a new concept that was introduced last year to give people from smaller cities the opportunity to audition.

Danielle, a Researcher for the X Factor team said: “We found that in previous years that people weren’t able to get to the big cities or there was cost implications, so this mobile van tour is going round to towns or cities that we wouldn’t normally visit. We don’t want anyone to miss out.” Steve, a Researcher also added that: “It’s been quite a busy day. We have found a range of different types of singer that have auditioned and we are really excited for our producers and judges to see what talent Bradford has to offer.” Tyba Aktar from Bradford, was among many hopefuls in line to wow the judges with her version of the Hozier song, ‘Take Me To Church’. The 17 year old student said: “ I saw in the newspaper that the X Factor was coming to Bradford and my friends said to me- Tyba you should enter and I thought why not.” It’s taken me a week to prepare and I am just really excited. I can’t believe that the X Factor is here in Bradford. It saves me having to go to one of the bigger cities to audition.” The mobile audition van is due to visit 41 towns and cities across the UK over the coming months.

Dawat Farah with

as she talks to our reporter on delivering master classes in London, attending a singalong screening of Om Shanti Om and much more….

Choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan recently flew into London for the 17th London Asian Film Festival.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. In fact, Farah was assisting the director, Mansoor Khan, and only took over as the choreographer once Saroj Khan walked out.

The Happy New Year director attended a choreography master class at the Southbank Centre, a sing-along screening of Om Shanti Om starring Shah Rukh Khan at Prince Charles Cinema in the West End and delivered a film making master class.

Farah also recalled how the same almost happened during the making of the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. “Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan called me from Switzerland and asked me if I can come the following day to shoot a song for them because Saroj Khan had not landed up on set. As much as I wanted to go, I was committed to doing a song with, hold your hearts, Nana Patekar. I couldn’t cancel that shoot as it would have been unethical and told them [SRK and

At her choreography master class, Khan clarified that it’s a myth that she worked for veteran choreographer Saroj Khan during the making of Aamir Khan starrer

However, Aditya later asked me to choreograph Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane at a set in Mumbai.” In an interview with our Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik, Farah talks about delivering master classes in London, attending a singalong screening of Om Shanti Om and much more….

Abhishek is always ready to give tips on anything and everything. But we didn’t talk about it. The sing-along screening of Om Shanti Om brings the film back to London where it premiered at Leicester Square in 2007 which you couldn’t attend as you were expecting…. Yes, I couldn’t come for that one. I think the singalong is a fabulous idea. I have never been to a sing-along screening but it’s great because we are usually singing along to the songs. Audiences can do so now without annoying the person sitting next to them. They’ve gone to quite a great length to make the karaoke subtitles appear in the film. Happy New Year is the first film you shot abroad. Can we see you filming in Britain in the future? While I was filming for Happy New Year in Mumbai, I thought to myself that I can’t shoot here anymore. It has become a torture. The studios are bad and crumbling and the unions keep landing up on sets and stop you from shooting. They just make it really difficult to shoot a film in Mumbai now. Every day during the schedule, I would say that I am never going to shoot a film here again and that I am going abroad. I don’t see the point of going abroad unless the story really demands it. You went back to choreography for SRK’s Chennai Express. He has just started his new home production. Will you be doing a song again for him?

It’s different to see you at a film festival… You will be surprised to know that I have been to quite a few film festivals. I was in London during last December. I met some people from the London Asian Film Festival and we discussed the master classes. It’s always good to come back to London. Abhishek Bachchan is a friend of the London Asian Film Festival and has delivered quite a few master classes here. Did he give you any tips?

I have just seen on Twitter that they have started filming for Dilwale. If Shah Rukh asks me to do a song for the film, I will do it. Are you not interested in choreographing anymore? It has been twenty-three-years. I’ll do a one-off song now and then. But I don’t want to continuously do choreography. Have you finalised your next film already? Not as of now. I will work on it in the next two months. Hopefully, I will be getting a facial and a foot massage somewhere and an idea will pop up in my head.

SPRING TIME Recipes: Cheese Babka

Polish cheese babka Ingredients

Directions Sprinkle the yeast and the pinch of sugar over the warm water; stir to dissolve. Let stand until foamy, about 10 minutes. Combine the 1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, milk, and 3 eggs in a bowl with 1 cup of flour and mix well. Add the yeast mixture and beat for 1 minute. Gradually add the remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, adding small amounts of flour as necessary to prevent sticking. Shape the dough into a round, and place it in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rise at room temperature until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours. Beat together the farmers’ cheese, 1/3 cup sugar, sour cream, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla

extract, and dried lemon peel in a bowl until smooth. Set the filling aside. Lightly oil a 10inch fluted tube pan (such as a Bundt®). Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a 10-inch by 12-inch rectangle. Brush the dough with the 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Spread the cheese filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough up like a jelly roll, starting from the long end; twist the dough 6 to 8 times to form a rope. Pinch the seams and ends closed and arrange the rope of dough in the greased pan. Cover loosely and let rise 1 hour. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake the babka until deep golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 5 minutes; invert the babka onto a wire rack and remove the pan. Allow the babka to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing.

garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the mixture over the fatty layer of the roast, and let the roast sit out until it is at room temperature, no longer than 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). Bake the roast for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C), and continue roasting for an additional 60 to 75 minutes. The internal temperature of the roast should be at 135 degrees F (57 degrees C) for medium rare. Allow the roast to rest for 10 or 15 minutes before carving so the meat can retain its juices.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Q: What do you usually do when you’re back home, in Madrid?

Q: What is ‘Broken Horses’ about?

A:I absolutely love Madrid! If I will ever have to move – it will be for work. Madrid is my city, my home. I love hanging out with my family and friends, just the usual stuff.

Writer, Producer & Director

A:Broken Horses is a thriller about the bonds of brotherhood, the laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence. About the relationship between two brothers - a concert-level violinist and a hired mercenary - and is set against the drug war in the turbulent American-Mexican border. About how wrong choices can destroy lives and everything one loves. Q: Will we ever see a desi version of ‘Broken Horses’? A:I’d like to make Broken Horses as a Hindi movie with Indian actors - it’s too early to get into details. But it is definitely in my future plans. Q: What’s your recipe for a successful movie? A:You have to dedicate two-three years on the script...then, the pre-production, shooting, post production hazards...it requires lots of hard work and dedication. Q: Do you still get nervous before the release of your films? A:Rajkumar Hirani and I, in fact, everyone who works with our production house (Vinod Chopra Films) are trained in making films within budget. We make good films because we make films within our budget. So we don’t get panicked thinking about the fate of the films. By God’s grace most of our films do really well.

María Valverde

Lead actress

Q:What was it about ‘Broken Horses’ that caught your attention?

Anton Yelchin

Lead actor

Q: You’re not just a great actor, but a musician too. Tell us about it. A:Oh it’s just a hobby for me. I always loved playing my guitar and making music, I even had a punk band with my friends. I feel like nowadays people just call themselves musicians even though they’re really not. Q:What inspired you to be an actor? A:Both of my parents are athletes and I wasn’t very good at it. Then I wanted to be a scientist but that didn’t work because I set our bathroom on fire, then I wanted to be a basketball player but im not very tall so that didn’t work out too. Finally my parents took me to acting class and even though I was really shy at first, I loved every single minute of being there.

Vincent D’Onofrio

Actor

Q:You have played a lot of big and recognizable roles. Do you think people get intimidated when they see you? A:I don’t think they’re intimidated. Usually they get really excited – they ask for an autograph or to take a picture. And it’s exciting for me too. Q: How hard is it for you to transform into yourself after acting?

A:The script. When I started reading it I couldn’t stop. I loved every single sentence and every single scene.I also loved the fact that it has darkness to it. It’s not all just happiness and joy; it shows real decisions and real consequences.

A:Straight after the director says ‘cut’ I try to turn into myself. I think as get more experienced, it becomes easier and easier to leave work behind.

Q: Did you enjoy working with your costars? A:Absolutely loved it! Everyone has very nice and friendly. I was afraid there might be some issues because every single one of us is so different but we’ve got on great.

A:I always pick a role that scares me the most – of course, you have to like the story too, but I would never choose a role that doesn’t instill some kind of fear in me. If I’m reading the script and I start thinking that I might not be able to do it, then I will definitely go for it.

Q:Have your parents always supported you?

Q: What is your key to success as an actor?

Q:Do you have a role model?

A:I don’t think I have a ‘key to success’ – there’s nothing that I know that other actors don’t know. The only thing that separates us is experience.

A:I have to say it is Kate Winslet. She is absolutely amazing, as a woman and as an actress. I want to be just like her. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favourite films Q: What type of films would to like to do in the future? A:I would like to do more English films, I know that I will always be the ‘Latin girl’, but I think I am ready for Hollywood.

Q: How do you pick a particular role?

Q: You have a lot of fans all around the world - Does their reaction or projections get to your head? A:I absolutely love it. It’s just like the feeling you get when you’re in a play and you can feel the audience even before you stepped on the stage for the first time. It’s quite something.

Men, don’t be silent, speak up about health issues you face! By Aalia Khan t: @AaliaAsNews e: Aalia@asiansunday.co.uk

When it comes to health issues concerning men they will always take a back seat and try to brush

the problem under the rug, coming across macho, resilient and strong becomes a mechanism many men

As such, Two Health Projects based at and supported by Carlisle Business Centre held a joints men’s health event on Wednesday 25 March. Manningham Healthy Living Initiative and the Central and East European Liaison Service (CEELS) came together to bring about different services on offer to men to help them speak out about health issues and to tackle these issues. Manningham Healthy Living Initiative aims to help people in Manningham and Girlington to become more physically active and eat healthier food. And the CEELS Project works to improve communication and information about Health Services for Central and East European Communities in Bradford. Many services such as; The Piccadilly Project – an alcohol advisory service, Men Standing Up – a men’s domestic abuse organisation, NHS Health trainer service, BYDP – youth organsation, Carers resource – for carers and vulnerable people, Prism youth project, Bradford District care trust and Picton Medical Centre all came together under one roof to educate men and make them aware of the services that are on offer to them and the opportunities that they can take advantage of to lead a healthier, happier life. As well as the health services present, people also had the chance to make their own smoothie by pedal power, which allowed them to ride a bike and create their own healthy smoothie at the same time. Community Health Worker, Alan Anderton said “The event today is to promote activities that men can access

about their healthcare. They can sign up to activities such as walk in groups, swimming, cycling, exercise etc. What we find is that with the Manningham Healthy Living Initiative, we sign up many women for activities but we have more difficulty getting men involved, I think part of it is because they don’t realise what some of the opportunities are and also men tend to brush aside some of the health issues that they have.” Anderton noted that some of the big issues in this area are obesity, diabetes and coronary heart disease, he emphasised that men can access services to work through these problems and tackle them, “People can improve their own health if they take the opportunities that are available to them, simple things such as regular exercise on a daily basis, joining a walking group or having a go at swimming can help.” He also felt that men may get inundated with information through the health services and media which can make things more confusing and hard. He says “I think if there are activities in local communities that are easily accessible that’s a good starting point. We are working together with the likes of the local medical practices so that they are aware of the opportunities that the voluntary sector and other projects can offer to their patients.” At the event people also had the chance to take part in a Men’s Health MOT check and sign up for personal health checks, courses and activities. CEELS Project Liaison Worker, Patrik Makula commented “Many men from all our communities are experiencing health problems such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease or a general lack of fitness. There are many projects like our own which can provide good information, support and activities.”

Twenty two year-old Jack is participating in a traineeship with Museums and Galleries as a Print and Social Media Assistant. He is developing the social media channels and marketing strategies for the Eye of the Beholder exhibition at Cartwright Hall in Lister Park. Seb Makes Mince Meat Out Of Hamilton By Ayyaz Malik t: @AyyazAsNews e: ayyaz@asiansunday.co.uk

New Ferrari driver Sebastien Vettel produced the shock of the weekend to secure his first grand prix win for Ferrari. Vettel who does hold the record for being the youngest world champion, surprised defending world champion Lewis Hamilton as he held off the British drivers challenge.

Lewis Hamilton

inevitable. A win in only his second race however is something Schumacher would be proud of himself. F1 has just

accustomed itself to Mercedes domination - but Vettel’s win and Raikonnen finishing fourth in Malaysia just might suggest that the race for the drivers title might not be a forgone conclusion as people would like to think.

Lauded for their excellent race strategy last time out as Mercedes were victorious, this race how ever just maybe have brought some fractions in the team which were rumoured to be prevalent in the winter back to the surface here.

After the race an emotional Vettel paid tribute to his ‘hero’ Michael Schumacher. This win for Ferrari has at least put a cloud of doubt in the Mercedes teams mind for future races this season - but having said that, titles aren’t decided after the second race.

When Vettel joined Ferrari, comparisons to F1 legend Michael Schumacher were

One thing is for certain though, this years race to be F1 champion should be exciting.

IPL Preview Just when you thought cricket fever is over, cricket is set to take centre stage again -but this through Indian’s annual cricketing showpiece the Indian Premier League or the IPL as it’s better known. The tournament which brought a lot of resentment in the past has eventually been graced by most cricket boards. Traditionally played over a six week period, sees eight teams from across India compete in an event which boasts some of the best foreign talent in the T20 game. Not quite in the way of bargain hunters - but each club owner (many celebs such as Shah Rukh Khan) go into an auction in the search of the best talent that is made available. In it’s

eighth season, the IPL concept has been very popular and the concept has spread across the world to places such as West Indies, Australia and many expect England to follow suit soon. Just like in football, the teams with the more wealthy owner can attract the best talent - but last year Kings XI Punjab ended that argument with brilliant performances which took them to the final. Although Punjab did boast of ‘Big Show’ Glen Maxwell, Indian players such as Saha, Awana and old war horse Balaji were just as instrumental. This years tournament however could be we with out one of the more successful teams of recent times, Kolkata Knight Riders threatening to pull out.

The Knight Riders are said to be unhappy that star spinner will be ordered top take another test of his bowling action by India’s officials, despite being cleared by the International Cricket Council. With 60 matches scheduled to be played in that approximately six week period, one would think the fittest will prevail overall. This IPL which will include players such as Chris Gayle, Dale Steyn as well as England Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara - to just name some. One of the most notable absentees is England batsmen Kevin Pieterson, who is pushing for a recall with his national side after his controversial ‘sacking’. Despite his absence and that of West Indian Darren Sammy, this

tournament still promises to be another good one. India as they have showed in recent years have had this amazing knack of producing great players that have come through the IPL education first. Ajinkya Rahane, Mohammed Shami and Sanju Samson are to just name some of the Indian players who have blossomed into great players after playing IPL cricket first. The fast paced T20 cricket is played at and that any team can beat anyone on their day - or lose against anyone on their day, will always make the IPL a spectacle for cricket fans. The IPL will be from 8th April - 24th May.

Wrestlemania an annual event in the wrestling calendar was this year host to some 70,000 fans - or as the organisers of the event like to put it, host 70,000 people from the WWE universe. The annual event which was held at the Levis stadium California - didn’t fail to disappoint as there were several matches which so many rivalries come to fruition. Not to forget to mention there many title’s on the line such as the United States championship, Intercontinental championship and of course the headline event, the WWE World Heavyweight championship. In a show which was four hours, organisers were very keen to fit matches into their schedule which meant that Antonio Cesaro and Tyson Kidd’s victory in the tag team title match which meant they retained their titles, wasn’t shown in the ‘main schedule’. Other matches saw The Big Show compete in the second Andre the giant battle royal. The world’s largest athlete had the pleasure of competing against 29 other athletes - but did manage to over come the odds and win the event which was won by Cesaro last year. With so many title matches on the line, the challenge was to keep us the audience in suspense - and that the WWE organisers did just that. The Intercontinental title match and the US title match were brilliant and well fought with hard fought wins for Daniel Bryan, who had to over come 6 other athletes which included defending champion Bad News Barrett - in a ladder match. Some may argue this match was a forgone conclusion due to Bryan’s popularity - but the excitement that match provided was definitely

a highlight. Doplh Ziggler and Bryan battling at the top of the ladder made for brilliant viewing .The US tittle which saw 15 team champion John Cena against Rusev, has been building up ahead of steam in recent weeks. Despite the adopted Russian’s grand entrance, it was Cena who prevailed after countering Rusev’s deadly ‘accolade’ submission. Some may argue such a result was bound to happen, especially after WWE script writers scripted this match as America vs Russia brawl if you will. To say that Wrestlemania 31 was a good event due to the quality of title matches on the line is an injustice. Seth Rollins and Randy Orton’s who returned at Fast lane , has been building up in recent weeks after Orton’s revenge attack on Rollins who tried to finish the career of the Viper with a vicious curb stomp assault on bricks some four months ago. Out for revenge, Orton got his wish for a match at Wrestlemania after risking a ‘beat down’ from the authority on raw. That ‘beat down’ never materialised on raw that night as the ‘Vigilante’ Sting saved Orton from The Big Show and co. C.O.O Triple H who was involved in that cross fire with Orton has been waiting to get his hands on Sting after a suffering a series of humiliations at the hands of the six time WCW champion. In what many think is Sting’s last contribution in WWE, the two legends of wrestling - all be it in different companies squared off. In a match that saw some classic moments such as Triple H bringing at out his iconic sledge hammer and Sting his bat, it was Triple H who prevailed in the end. After the match the audience were treated to a square off of two old wrestling gangs the NWO and DX. Although the square off was just

that - a square off which ended with sting and Triple H shaking hands - but the excitement was still there all the same. Wrestlemania was very quickly becoming an authority dominated event. Looking to carry on that domination was Seth Rollins who was up against Randy Orton in a match which saw the future of the company against the face of it. In a hard fought contest, it was Randy Orton who came out on top after landing an ‘RKO’ on Rollins who himself was looking to finish off Orton with his curb stomp finishing move. Despite that setback it was Rollins who would end the night the happiest. The former Shield member who defected to the authority in the aim of getting higher up the company, ended up ‘cashing in’ after his money in the back win to brilliant effect. Champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Roman Reigns were in the midst of an old mighty brawl which saw Reigns suffer three F5’s ( Lesnar’s trademark finishing move). The powerhouse Reigns however survived - but with both Lesnar and Reigns starting to tire, Rollins sensed his chance. A curb stomp to old pal Roman Reigns helped Rollins grab the title, much to the immense displeasure of Reigns and Lesnar. Title matches and on going feuds really did help make this wrestle mania one of the best in years, maybe even bettering the efforts of last year - but Ronda Rousey a UFC champion slapping Stephanie McMahon after McMahon slapped The Rock, was for me worth it’s weight in gold. In certain matches Wrestlemania was predictable maybe - but excitement it had definitely.
