Editor's Note
HAPPY 2025!
Welcome to the first print edition of this exciting new year. As we turn the page to fresh opportunities and challenges, we are thrilled to present one of our most anticipated features: the Most Influential South Asians list. This annual tradition is our way of shining a well-deserved spotlight on individuals within our communities who are making a significant impact.
Creating this list is always a humbling experience. It’s a reminder of the depth and breadth of talent, perseverance, and innovation within the South Asian diaspora. The list is not exhaustive—how could it be? There are countless individuals whose efforts and achievements shape lives, inspire change, and pave the way for a brighter future. Yet, the trailblazers featured this year have been nominated by you. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who took the time to share stories of these extraordinary people. Your nominations are what make this feature so special. So, why is it important to highlight the most influential South Asians? As a community, we are often underrepresented in mainstream narratives. Too often, success is narrowly defined—it’s either about immense wealth or philanthropy. But there’s so much more to the story. Between these extremes are individuals leveraging their work, businesses, and platforms to inspire change, create impact, and uplift others. These are the stories that resonate, inspire, and deserve recognition.
By celebrating these influential figures, we’re also dismantling stereotypes and broadening the perception of what success looks like within our community. We’re championing diversity within diversity, acknowledging those who may not always seek the limelight but whose contributions are shaping industries, driving social progress, and fostering innovation.
Our hope is that this celebration of influence motivates and inspires others. Whether it’s a budding entrepreneur, a young student, or a professional navigating their career path, seeing someone who looks like them achieving remarkable things can ignite a spark of possibility. Representation matters, and it’s our privilege to be a platform for these voices. As we embark on 2025, let us also reflect on the importance of staying connected as a community. Share your stories with us. Celebrate your achievements and those of others around you. Follow us on our social media channels and engage with our content. Let us continue to amplify your voices and champion your causes, ensuring that South Asians are not just part of the narrative but shaping it.
Thank you for allowing us to be your voice and representation. Here’s to a year of influence, inspiration, and impact. Together, let’s make 2025 a year to remember.
Stay connected, stay inspired, and let’s continue this journey together.

More than 250 arrests made in drink and drug driving operation
More than 250 motorists suspected of being over the prescribed limit for drink or drugs were arrested in West Yorkshire during December.
The arrests were made as part of Operation Limit, a national initiative aimed at reducing the number of those killed or seriously injured on the roads at a time of the year when there tends to be an increase in collisions where drink or drug use is a factor.
The operation in West Yorkshire saw a total of 279 motorists arrested. 186 for suspected drink driving and 93 for suspected drug driving.
The highest daily total of drink driving arrests in West Yorkshire this year took place on the 8 and 22 December (13 arrests), while the highest daily total of drug driving arrests happened on 6 December, with seven motorists arrested.
Some of those arrested under this operation have since appeared at court. One motorist was banned from driving for 36 months, while
another was fined a total of £673.
Chief Inspector James Farrar, head of the Roads Policing Unit at West Yorkshire Police, said:
“This operation - which is specifically for December - may now have concluded, but the fact remains – there is no excuse for drink or drug driving and we will
continue to stop motorists where we have reason to do so.
“While the number of those arrested has fallen slightly this year, the issue of drink and drug driving on our roads clearly remains an issue and we will continue to work with our partners to make the roads of West Yorkshire safer.
“Some of those motorists arrested have already had action taken against them, and the others can expect to face sanctions as their offences are processed.
“I hope that our ‘12 Excuses’ campaign has again had a positive impact, and that people will remember our messages when
going out – regardless of what time of year it is.
“I would also like to say ‘thank you’ to those people who acted responsibly when going out over the last month. It is people like you who are helping to make our roads safer.”
Alison Lowe OBE, chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Board and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said:
“I am thankful to the police for stopping these individuals before their irresponsible actions caused further harm.
“Hopefully, these driving bans and fines will give them cause to re-evaluate their behaviour and consider the safety of other roads users.
“Road safety is everyone’s business, and together we can achieve Vision Zero, ending road deaths and serious injuries. Eliminating drink and drug driving plays a significant role in meeting this goal.”
Teen Sentenced for Stabbing, Grosvenor Park, Bradford
A teenager has been sentenced for a stabbing in Grosvenor Park, Lumb Lane in Bradford in 2023.
Faaris Khalid now 17 years old and from Bradford, who can now be named after the Judge lifted reporting restrictions, pleaded guilty half way though his trial to a section 18 assault.
The 16 year old male victim suffered serious life changing injuries in the assault.
The court heard how a pre-arranged fight had been organised between two other teenaged boys on Saturday 11 March 2023 at Grosvenor Park. A number of other youths converged on the park, including the offender, and some violence occurred between rival groups. Khalid then approached the
victim, a bystander, produced a knife that he had brought with him, and stabbed the victim once to the chest. In the aftermath of the attack and before his arrest, the offender disposed of his phone and clothing and shaved his hair.
Today (14 January ) at Bradford Crown Court Khalid was given a 5 years and 4 month sentence. The judge told him he’ll serve at least two thirds of the sentence in prison.
He was also sentenced for the following unrelated offences:-
• Count 1: Possession of a prohibited firearm.
• Count 2: Possession of a prohibited firearm.
• Count 3: Possession of ammunition without a firearm certificate.
• Count 4: Having an article with a blade or point in a public place.
• Count 5: Possession of a controlled drug of class B.
Senior Investigating Officer
Detective Superintendent Al Weekes of Bradford District Police said:
“We welcome the sentence handed down to Khalid today.
“Knives and other weapons have no place on our streets and today’s sentence shows the serious consequences of getting involved in criminality and carrying a knife.
“It was only through rapid medical intervention that the victim survived, the consequences could have been much worse.
“I would like to thank those witnesses that did come forward after the incident and urge the community to provide us with information about those who continue to carry weapons and participate in crime so that we can intervene to keep their children safe.
“I hope the sentence gives some comfort and justice to the victim in what has been a harrowing and lengthy ordeal over the past two years.”

BRADFORD – UK CITY OF CULTURE: A MOMENT FOR UNITY AND REFLECTION
As someone born and raised in Bradford, with Indian Muslim roots, my life has been a journey of balancing identities –maintaining the heritage of my ancestors while embracing the culture of my hometown.
As someone born and raised in Bradford, with Indian Muslim roots, my life has been a journey of balancing identities – maintaining the heritage of my ancestors while embracing the culture of my hometown. Growing up in the 1980s, I was part of a much smaller South Asian diaspora than exists today. Back then, racism often went unchallenged, and stereotypes about people like me – brown, female, and working-class were rife. The expectation was that we would have no aspirations, and if we did, they would amount to very little. It has taken me almost 40 years to feel that, despite the colour of my skin, my religious beliefs, and my love for Bollywood and curry, Bradford and of course the UK is truly my home.
Recently, I reconnected with a group of school friends, all brown, all from working-class backgrounds, and from various faiths. It struck me why we connected so well back then. While our white classmates were lovely, there was an unspoken assumption in our school days that they would “become something” while we would follow a predictable path of marriage, children, and modest jobs. But that narrative has been turned on its head.
Among my friends are a director at KPMG, a Learning Mentor, a pharmacist, finance and insurance specialists, and a Senior Lead for an NHS Trust. As for me, I’ve built six ethnic media titles that reach more than half a million readers weekly. Not bad for a group of brown kids whose potential was
once dismissed.
This brings me to Bradford City of Culture 2025. For people like me, who’ve grown up fighting to be accepted and included, the idea of a City of Culture has immense potential, if it truly involves everyone. My immediate concern has always been ensuring that inclusivity is at its heart.
After years of discussing accountability and transparency, I like every single Bradfordian am fully invested, to ensure the City of Culture works for all of us – after all it is ‘Our Time’.
So as the press invite arrived for the big day of the launch event, I put myself forward to attend the press tour and witness the amazing offering of my home town. While the event showcased some fantastic projects and places that made me proud, I couldn’t ignore the glaring absence of
ethnic media. Out of the two South Asian outlets present, none were from Pakistani or Bangladeshi representations, despite one in three people in Bradford identifying as South Asian. If City of Culture is meant to celebrate grassroots communities, shouldn’t grassroots media also have a seat at the table?
That said, the press tour highlighted Bradford’s incredible artistic and cultural offerings. The launch culminated in the breath-taking Rise performance, headlined by Steven Frayne, (Dynamo) and featuring over 200 artists showcasing acrobatics, music, and poetry. It was an unforgettable experience.
Even more heart-warming was seeing thousands of Bradfordians, families braving the freezing temperatures, pay just £2 a ticket to celebrate together in City Park. It reminded me of the unity my classmates and I shared, how, at a grassroots level, Bradford’s people instinctively see each other as equals. The division in my view comes from leadership, where decisions about inclusion are often muddled by power and politics.
As City of Culture unfolds, my hope is that it delivers not just a return on the millions invested but also a legacy of inclusivity that reflects the grassroots spirit of Bradford.
Because the people of this city deserve nothing less.

Here’s why FARAH KHAN thinks working with SHAH RUKH
KHAN “is harder now”
Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan’s friendship, which spans over three decades, is one of the most enduring in Bollywood. The duo has collaborated on numerous iconic songs and films, but Farah recently admitted that working with the superstar has become more challenging over the years.
In a candid conversation with ETimes, Farah opened up about the deep bond she shares with Shah Rukh, which dates back to the early days of his career, before hits like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Deewana. Despite their long-standing friendship, Farah
confessed that working with him now brings an increased level of pressure.
“If it was hard working with him then, it is harder now. Every time we work on a song, the pressure doubles because we have created such iconic songs together,” she said, reflecting on their past collaborations.
Farah’s most recent directorial venture with Shah Rukh was Happy New Year in 2014. In the same interview, she shared that following that film, she took a break from direction, as she struggled to find a project that excited her. However, she expressed her desire to return to filmmaking when the right project presents itself at the right time.
On Shah Rukh’s front, he is currently busy with King, his upcoming film that will also star his daughter Suhana Khan, alongside Abhishek Bachchan. Earlier reports suggested that King would be directed by Sujoy Ghosh, but it has since been confirmed that Siddharth Anand, the director of SRK’s 2023 blockbuster Pathaan, will helm the project.
ARE GOHAR RASHEED AND KUBRA KHAN GETTING MARRIED?
Reports have surfaced suggesting that Pakistani actors Gohar Rasheed and Kubra Khan are preparing for their upcoming wedding.
The buzz surrounding the celebration gained momentum after Gohar Rasheed posted a video on Instagram with the caption “Bismillah 2025,” sparking speculation among fans. The video featured a gathering of his friends and fellow actors, including Shazia Wajahat and Wajahat Rauf, hinting at the joyous occasion.
Sources have confirmed that wedding preparations are underway in Karachi, with plans for a grand celebration to mark the special event. Additionally, reports state that Gohar and Kubra were spotted practising dance moves together the previous night, adding to the excitement around the upcoming nuptials.
Fans of the actors are well aware of the close friendship and strong bond between Gohar Rasheed and Kubra Khan. The duo has often been seen together on-screen and off, fueling speculation about their relationship. However, earlier in a public appearance, Gohar confirmed that he was no longer single, revealing he is in a committed relationship with a long-time friend. Though he expressed his love for his partner and mentioned their wedding plans, Gohar chose not to disclose her identity.
Gohar also addressed ongoing rumours about his relationship with Kubra Khan, making it clear that there was no romantic connection between them. “There is nothing between us, and I have mentioned this in my previous interviews,” Gohar clarified. “Kubra is like family to me; not every close relationship leads to marriage. While fans enjoy seeing us together, we’ve consistently stated in several shows that we are just friends.”
The actor went on to praise Kubra, emphasising their mutual respect for each other and reiterating that marriage was not something either of them had considered. As fans eagerly await further details, it seems that the focus is now firmly on Gohar’s upcoming wedding celebration.
THE REAL REASON BEHIND TRIPTII DIMRI’S SUDDEN EXIT FROM AASHIQUI 3
Triptii Dimri, who was initially set to reunite with her Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 costar Kartik Aaryan in Aashiqui 3, is no longer part of the much-anticipated romantic film. The announcement of her casting was made last year, with reports suggesting that the actors had even shot a muhurat scene. However, on Tuesday, news broke that Triptii has exited the project, with conflicting reports about the reasons behind her departure.
According to Mid-Day, the actress voluntarily stepped away due to delays in the film’s production. A source quoted in the report said, “Triptii was excited to headline the romance, but that’s not going to happen now. Aashiqui 3 is undergoing a [title]-related dispute, so it has been postponed indefinitely.”
However, an industry insider has offered a different perspective, claiming it was the makers who decided to replace Triptii after her initial look test. “The fundamental requirement to be the heroine of Aashiqui 3 is innocence, and the team felt that Triptii’s recent roles have made her image too exposed for the character,” the source revealed. “Her solo standing at the box office hasn’t been profitable, and the makers feel she no longer fits the parameters of a legendary, soulful love story like Aashiqui.”
The insider also pointed to the delay in production as a contributing factor, stating that when Triptii was initially cast, she was relatively new to the industry. Since then, she has appeared in two more films, including Animal, which reportedly altered her on-screen image in the eyes of the makers.
Despite these reports, neither Triptii nor the filmmakers have issued an official statement, leaving the exact reason for her departure unclear. Industry sources speculate the truth may lie somewhere in between, with both the actress unwilling to wait and the makers seeking a “fresher” face for the lead role.
Aashiqui 3 has faced multiple delays and changes since its initial announcement. Originally slated to be co-produced by Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt, the project underwent a title change in March 2024 when Kumar announced it would
be renamed Tu Aashiqui Hai. Reports later emerged in November suggesting Kartik Aaryan was keen to retain the Aashiqui branding, leading to further postponements.
The film, directed by Anurag Basu, remains one of the most anticipated romantic dramas, but the ongoing changes have left fans wondering when it will finally go on floors.

Review: Game Changer: A Ram Charan Spectacle Elevated by
Style and Drama, But Falters in Substance
Cast:
Ram Charan, Kiara Advani, Anjali, SJ Suryah, Srikanth, Samuthirakhani, Naveen Chandra, Sunil, Vennela Kishore, Brahmanandam
Director: Shankar
Platform:
Released in cinemas from 10 January
Director Shankar's Game Changer promises grandeur and delivers it in abundance, but the film often feels weighed down by its predictable storyline and uneven execution. With Ram Charan at the helm of this political drama, the movie leans heavily on his dual-role performance to carry the narrative, and while his portrayal is exceptional, the film struggles to break free from conventional tropes.
THE
PLOT: A FAMILIAR POWER
STRUGGLE
The story follows Ram Nandan (Ram Charan), a principled IAS officer turned district collector, who wages a war against corruption, starting with the
Chief Minister's son, Mopidevi (SJ Suryah). Mopidevi's power-hungry machinations eventually lead to his father, Chief Minister Bobbili Satyamurthy (Srikanth), naming Ram Nandan as his successor before his untimely demise. What unfolds next is a high-stakes political battle between Ram Nandan and Mopidevi, peppered with revelations about Ram Nandan's father, Appanna (also Ram Charan), whose dream was to transform the state's political landscape.
While the narrative has its gripping moments, especially in the second half, it remains largely predictable, relying on Shankar's signature flair to compensate for its lack of novelty.
PERFORMANCES: A SHOWCASE FOR RAM CHARAN
Ram Charan is undeniably the heart and soul of Game Changer. His dual portrayal of the stoic Ram Nandan and the visionary Appanna is compelling, with the former standing out as the stronger of the two characters. Charan's charisma and intensity shine through in pivotal scenes, especially during his confrontations with SJ Suryah's
Mopidevi.
SJ Suryah delivers a stellar performance as the scheming antagonist, bringing both menace and depth to his role. His quirks and commanding screen presence make him a standout in the film, particularly in the second half.
Kiara Advani, cast as the love interest, is stunning but underutilized, with her role confined to song sequences and superficial romantic moments. Anjali, in a more substantial role as Parvathi, tries to make an impact but is let down by weak writing. Srikanth is reliable as the Chief Minister, while Sunil's minor role adds little value.
The film falters in its comedic attempts, with Vennela Kishore and Brahmanandam s outdated humor feeling forced and out of place, highlighting Shankar's struggle to adapt to contemporary sensibilities.
TECHNICAL BRILLIANCE AND SHORTCOMINGS
As expected from a Shankar film, Game Changer boasts top-notch production values. The visuals are stunning, with opulent sets and breathtaking locations providing a feast for
the eyes. Producer Dil Raju's investment is evident in every frame, giving the film a polished and grandiose look. However, the technical aspects are not without flaws. While Thaman s songs are visually appealing, the music itself is average, failing to leave a lasting impression. The background score, an essential component in a political drama, is surprisingly lackluster, diminishing the impact of key scenes.
The editing team deserves credit for maintaining an engaging pace despite the formulaic screenplay. However, the dialogues and narrative structure lack innovation, relying on tried-and-tested clichés that make the film feel overly familiar.
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
The film's greatest strength lies in its dramatic confrontations and Ram Charan's powerful performance. The flashback sequences involving Appanna add emotional depth and elevate the proceedings, though they too feel stretched at times.
On the downside, the romantic track between Ram Charan and Kiara Advani feels halfbaked, failing to evoke any real connection. The outdated comedic elements and the overreliance on predictable tropes detract from the overall experience.
VERDICT: A VISUAL TREAT, BUT LACKS FRESHNESS
Game Changer is a quintessential Ram Charan showpiece, bolstered by Shankar's flair for grandeur and style. While the film captivates with its visuals and dramatic moments, it falls short of being a truly groundbreaking political drama. For fans of Ram Charan and Shankar, the film offers enough spectacle to justify a watch. However, for those seeking innovation and depth, Game Changer might leave you wanting more.
Kanafeh Crinkle Cake
Method:
Heat a pan over medium-high heat. Add butter and once melted add in finely chopped kataifi pastry. Mix well so that the pastry is evenly coated in butter. Keep stirring and cook the pastry until golden and crisp. Then remove from heat and set aside to cool. Once cooled, add pistachio paste and mix well until combined.
Preheat the oven at 180°c. Grease a rectangular baking dish. Unroll the filo sheets, add spoonfuls of kanafeh filling across one (short) end of the filo sheets. Fold over to encase the filling then crinkle the remaining filo and place in the baking dish. Repeat the process with remaining filo sheets. Bake the crinkle cake for 10 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven and pour the melted butter over the crinkle cake. Return to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes, until golden and crispy. While the crinkle cake bakes, make the cream mixture. Add cream, sugar, and salt into a saucepan. Place over medium heat and stir until the sugar has melted. Remove from heat and set aside. Once the second bake is complete, remove the dish from the oven and pour the cream mixture over the top. Return the dish to the oven one more time and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove the crinkle cake from the oven. Allow to cook for a few minutes then drizzle melted chocolate on top and sprinkle over finely chopped pistachios and rose petals. Cool for 10 minutes for serving.

City of Culture gets off to spectacular start with Rise
By CHRIS YOUNG
Bradford’s year as City of Culture got off to a spectacular start with an opening event that featured choirs, orchestras, rappers and magic from hometown hero Dynamo.
Rise, held in City Park, is estimated to have attracted around 10,000 people, despite freezing temperatures.
Friday 10 January was the first of two nights of the event to kick off 12 months of arts and culture events throughout the District.
The event celebrated notable Bradford figures but was not afraid of shying away from the District’s problems, with many of the musical numbers mentioning the city’s often poor reputation and the poverty many in Bradford experience.
As the crowd streamed into City Park it was obvious that the City of Culture title had captured the imagination of a wide variety of people, with young families rubbing shoulders with older
Bradfordians and people who many may not see as the target audience for cultural events.
Starting with street poetry from Kirsty Bratfud and ending with an appearance from Steven Frayne – the magician formerly known as Dynamo, the event also included aerial acrobatics and a rapper performing from the roof of City Hall.
A choir performed on the steps of Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court while an orchestra played in One City Park, an office building overlooking the crowd.
There had been some uncertainty leading up to the event – a week of freezing temperatures led to some questions whether it would go ahead.
But the thousands who attended followed advice to wrap up warm, and the cold seemed to have little impact on visitor numbers.
Musical numbers performed during the event urged the people
of Bradford to rise above others’ perceptions of the District and embrace where they were from.
It also embraced the city’s history and diversity.
Lights, acrobatics and projections turned the quite basic stage set up into an ever-changing canvas – a row of terraced houses one minute and backdrop for famous Bradfordians the next.
Although Steven Frayne/ Dynamo had helped plan for the event, an appearance from the world-famous magician had been kept a secret until the event.
When he did appear, he told the crowd how proud he was to be from Bradford, and how he ‘bigged’ up the city wherever he went.
Looking out at the thousands in attendance he said: “I’ve made so many memories in Bradford – this is probably my favourite of all.”
In true Dynamo fashion he performed magic tricks that baffled the audience – it’s safe to say the launch was a huge success.

Tulip Siddiq resigns: there’s no evidence she broke any rules, but here’s why she had to go anyway
Tulip Siddiq has resigned as anticorruption minister after getting embroiled in a corruption scandal. A number of questions had been raised about her following an investigation by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission into the country’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was deposed last year and just happens to be Siddiq’s aunt.
The accusations centre on properties that it is alleged were made available or given to Siddiq directly or indirectly by people closely connected to the former regime. There are also questions about her attendance at an event in Moscow in 2013, before she was an MP and long before she became a government minister. The event was the opening of a power station now at the centre of the alleged embezzlement of £3.9 billion of infrastructure spending.
On January 14, a criminal case was reportedly filed by Bangladeshi authorities against Siddiq and other members of her family named in the investigation. A spokesperson for Siddiq has said: “No evidence has been presented for these allegations. Tulip has not been contacted by anyone on the matter and totally refutes the claims.”
The accusations led Siddiq to refer herself to the independent advisor for ministerial standards, Sir Laurie Magnus, at the end of last year. The independent adviser judges whether ministers have or have not broken the ministerial code – although the prime minister is the one who is the final arbiter. The independent adviser is, in other words, VAR. If the adviser thinks something looks dodgy, they send the prime minister to the screen to make the final call.
Under former prime minister Boris Johnson, two of these advisers resigned over his failure to act on findings over his own conduct and that of his home
secretary, Priti Patel.
Magnus has found no evidence of misconduct on Siddiq’s part but said it was “regrettable” that Siddiq hadn’t been more live to the “potential reputational risks” of her family ties. The new criminal case against Siddiq doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on the ministerial code, given the filing is not UKbased.
However, looking at the ministerial code in detail, I think there were two specific areas which could be argued to merit further investigation. They centre on the so-called “general principle” and ministerial “procedure”.
The general principle underpinning a minister’s private interests is that they are “appointed to serve the public and must ensure that no conflict arises, or could reasonably be perceived to arise, between their public duties and their private interests, financial or otherwise”.
The procedural underpinning is that they must give “a full declaration in writing of private interests which might be thought to give rise to a conflict, actual or perceived. This declaration should also cover interests of the minister’s spouse or partner and close family.”
Both of these point to a specific challenge for Siddiq in this case –the problem of perception.
THE PERILS OF PERCEPTION
It’s hard to be a politician. Judgements about ethical behaviour are ever changing,
and potential breaches are sometimes less about whether specific rules or laws have been broken and slightly more about vibes. As a senior government adviser told the Guardian last week: “It just doesn’t pass the smell test … even if she hasn’t done anything technically wrong, she’ll have to go.” It might be the case that if she were in a different role (literally any other post in government that didn’t involve the word “anticorruption”) Siddiq would have been fine. However, returning to vibes, Siddiq also had the problem of there simply being no good response as regards perception to questions of the provenance of the property in Kings Cross. Every explanation seemed to centre around an ignorance of who gifted it, how, and with what money.
Scandals in politics tend to catch the public imagination when they reinforce everyone’s worst perceptions of those who practice it. That they are out of touch, are unaware of what’s going on, that the rules don’t apply, or that they simply don’t get it. The “I’m not quite sure who bought me this flat” defence, falls well and truly into this category.
WHAT NOW?
The Siddiq affair raises questions for a Labour government that can’t seem to control its own narrative. Why was Siddiq given an anti-corruption brief in the first place if these
ways, strengthening certain reporting requirements around the receipt of gifts (following his own scandal last year).
That said, it’s unclear what happens next. There are good reasons to consolidate elements of the parliamentary standards ecosystem under the umbrella of a new ethics and integrity commission. But anything bigger than that risks doing more harm than good. Would a new commission, for example, then be in charge of the complex task of monitoring political financing and the corruption challenges these arrangements present?
vulnerabilities were known about before Labour came to power? And why was this story been allowed to rumble on for over a week?
One of the more notable political stories from last year saw government insiders placing bets on the date of the election when they had privileged knowledge of Rishi Sunak’s plans to call a vote in July. This story was also typified by Sunak’s relative inaction over those in his circle at fault. Starmer, meanwhile, immediately suspended Labour candidate Kevin Craig when it was revealed that he, in the ultimate emotional hedge, bet on himself to lose in his constituency.
Starmer seems to have lost this ruthless streak now he is in office, and not necessarily to his benefit. Now, of course, you can say that Starmer was simply waiting on the outcome of Magnus’s inquiries.
But given Siddiq’s specific brief, it at the very least made sense to ask her to step back from duties as soon as concerns were raised – especially when the ministerial code is written, at least partly, with public perceptions in mind.
It will also strengthen the calls for Labour to act on its manifesto commitment to “establish a new ethics and integrity commission”.
There have been positive signs, here. Given the previous government’s relationship to standards, it should be welcomed that this one doesn’t seem to be actively antagonistic.
Starmer, for example, updated the ministerial code in November in a series of small but positive
Similarly, while the arrangements of advisers on ministerial standards are unpopular – especially given the PM is the ultimate arbiter – what is the alternative? Many would feel (understandably) queasy about imbuing those who are not elected with powers to depose those who are. Significant safeguards would have to be put in place. These are questions the government needs to grapple with. A core mission for Labour was to “restore confidence in government” and more widely restore British trust in politics. And to say it’s been a bumpy start, well that would be an understatement.
I worked on the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse – here’s what Elon Musk is missing
By WILLIAM TANTAM
I worked on the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse –here’s what Elon Musk is missing
By William Tantam
Elon Musk’s intervention into British politics has revived the debate about how the government responds to child sexual abuse, particularly by “grooming gangs”. While this is an important discussion, as a researcher of child sexual abuse
I am concerned that Musk’s comments have done more to spread misconceptions and harm victims than to protect children.
I was a researcher at the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). My colleagues and I received and analysed the experiences of more than 6,000 survivors of child sexual abuse. Here is what I wish Musk understood before intervening.
The national narrative around grooming gangs has focused on high-profile cases in Rochdale, Rotherham and other towns, where groups of men, mainly from Pakistani backgrounds, were convicted of sexually abusing and raping over a thousand girls between 1997 and 2013, some as young as 11.
A number of local inquiries and reviews since have concluded that there were failures on multiple levels to appropriately investigate and respond to the crimes. Throughout, some politicians and campaigners have argued that these gangs (and others of their ethnic or religious background) pose the greatest threat to the sexual safety of children.
The reality is that a far greater threat is posed by those within the family and acquaintances and – in a majority white country such as the UK – probably by white perpetrators.
An inquiry in Rotherham clearly recognised that “there is no simple link between race and child sexual exploitation, and across the UK the greatest numbers of perpetrators of CSE [child sexual exploitation] are white men”.
This narrative also conveniently avoids 2020 Home Office research suggesting that most offenders in organised exploitation are white.
There are many challenges with data collection when it comes to ethnicity of offenders. But the raw
numbers show that these specific grooming gang cases are not representative of the widespread child abuse issues in the UK. And no data exists to suggest that any one race or ethnic background is predisposed to sexual abuse.
THE FACTS ABOUT ABUSE
In the UK, evidence shows that the majority of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by a family member, friend or acquaintance.
Research at IICSA found that 47% of the thousands of participants we spoke to were sexually abused by a family member, and 42% in the family home. The next most common perpetrator and location were reported less than half as much (other relationship 26%, school 15%).
Abuse taking place within families remains highly stigmatised. Many who experience it do not report it, often because they feel they will not be believed or protected appropriately. The available research shows that child sexual abuse is a global issue, larger than any individual culture or ethnicity. A global study in 2011 found that rates were lowest in Asia and highest in Australia. The researchers recognised that this was likely due to reporting mechanisms and research methods rather than to innate cultural differences.
additional burden of living in a society where a prominent narrative about their sexual and psychological instinct is that of perpetration. While most male victims have at some point identified a fear that they may be seen as potential perpetrators, men of south Asian heritage now struggle that their entire identity is inextricably linked with ideas of perpetration and danger they represent to children.
lasting trauma they have left in their wake. Instead, I want to make sure that public anger, attention and funds are directed towards the most common perpetrators and in support of all victims of child sexual abuse.
Given Musk’s comments, I also think it is important to recognise the role of tech companies in grooming and child sexual exploitation.
Estimates from Childlight, the global child safety institute at the University of Edinburgh, suggest that globally more than 300 million children have been affected by abuse online. One in eight have faced non-consensual image offences (12.6%) and online solicitation (12.5%). And a National Crime Agency report published last year warned that the scale of child sexual abuse online is probably increasing and becoming more complex.
The platform Musk owns, X (formerly Twitter), has come under fire for how it handles reports of child sexual abuse. The company was fined by the Australian government in 2023 for non-compliance with an investigation into its practices. Last year, a US Senate committee held a hearing of tech executives to testify about child safety, including sexual abuse and exploitation, on platforms. X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, only agreed to attend after receiving a government-issued subpoena.
Alongside replicating misconceptions about abuse, Musk’s comments can harm current victims and survivors, particularly in ethnic minority communities. Victims in those communities may be dissuaded from seeking help, for fear of confirming beliefs that their cultures are inherently abusive.
IICSA’s report into child sexual abuse in ethnic minority communities found that “cultural stereotypes and racism can lead to institutions and professionals failing to identify and respond to child sexual abuse and can make it difficult for people from ethnic minorities to speak up”.
I spoke with Michael May, former head of diverse communities at IICSA, who said: Victims and survivors of south Asian heritage now face the
Female survivors with south Asian or Muslim identities will be impacted by ideas about safeguarding the reputation of their entire ethnicity or religion … this is on top of a legitimate fear that disclosures in the wider world will be used against them and those they love.
These comments also risk diverting public attention and political will from implementing the recommendations made by the IICSA. While Musk has called for a new public inquiry specifically into the grooming gangs, those who conducted the national child abuse inquiry have said that its key recommendations have yet to be implemented.
WHERE MUSK CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE
My comments here are not intended to downplay the awful crimes committed in Rochdale and elsewhere, or to dismiss the
As one of the big five tech companies, X has an important role to play in tackling online grooming, and the creation and dissemination of child sexual abuse images. My recent research with Susanna Alyce found that survivors of online child sexual abuse felt little was being done to recognise their experiences or respond to their recommendations.
Musk’s comments are a distraction not only from the facts of child abuse in the UK – which is mostly perpetrated within families, not by gangs – but from the role he could actually play in working to stop child abuse and exploitation online. When misunderstandings and misrepresentations of abuse go viral, it is survivors who suffer the most.
The gym can be full of germs – here’s how to protect yourself
By PRIMROSE FREESTONE
Exercise is good for you – but the gym might not be.
Dumbbells, barbells and every machine in between can act as reservoirs for a wide variety of transmissible bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens – such as impegito, flu and athlete’s foot. Thankfully, there are many things you can do to lower your risk of encountering these germs during your next workout.
By far, the most germ-rich areas in any gym are places that are warm and wet – such as saunas, showers, swimming pools or hot tubs.
But many other parts of the gym are also riddled with germs – including on the equipment you might use every time you go. Basically, anywhere there’s sweat, there are probably germs.
Sweat is a complex mixture of various substances – including vitamins, mineral salts, lactic acid, amino acids and lipids. This makes it an excellent nutrient source for bacteria and fungi –even after it dries. This means any sweat that drips off of you (or other gymgoers) can be used by bacteria and germs to help them grow.
Disease-causing bacteria, fungi and viruses have been found everywhere – from gym floors and door handles, weights and barbells, cardio machines, bicycle and treadmill handlebars, benches, chairs and exercise mats. The most common disease-causing bacteria found in gym germ
KEEPING GYM GERMS AT BAY
While the gym may be full of germs, thankfully there are a lot you can do to protect yourself from infections.
profiling studies were those that cause skin infections – such as Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria which can cause MRSA.
Stomach infections are also a risk, as pathogens such as Salmonella (which cause sickness, diarrhoea and vomiting) have been found on gym equipment.
Germs can also be spread when we cough or breathe – and we tend to breathe a lot more heavily than normal while working out. This means any viruses living in our saliva and respiratory tract can be expelled into the air and onto the surfaces around us.
Research shows that a range of common viral infections, including rhinovirus (the common cold), influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, can all persist in the air of an enclosed gym for hours. They can also remain on hard surfaces for up to several days.
The clothes you wear to the gym may also increase your risk of getting sick. Many of us workout with our skin uncovered so we don’t overheat. But this leaves us at risk of picking up a range of different skin infections after visiting the gym.
Some of the most common infections include Tinea fungal infections (such as ringworm and athlete’s foot), Human papillomavirus (which causes Plantar warts), as well as impetigo and other skin rashes caused by Staphylococcus. These infections might be contracted from the locker room, shower or hot tub.
Ideally, all exercise equipment should be sanitised frequently. Although gym managers are supposed to clean exercise equipment on a regular basis, this equipment should ideally be sanitised after every user as germs can persist in an infectable state on plastic, steel and other polymer hard surfaces for hours to weeks – and even months. It’s a good idea to use an antiseptic wipe to disinfect the surface of any equipment you’re going to use before and after your touch it. This will protect other users as well. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after visiting the gym is a must as hands are a vector for acquiring germs. If this isn’t possible, you can use a hand sanitiser containing at least 70% alcohol before and during your work out and after leaving the gym.
Bacteria thrive on damp towels and locker room and shower floors, so never share towels, combs or razors. Never walk barefoot in a gym either to avoid the germs living on gym or shower room floors. To protect yourself against airborne viruses that might be found in the gym, get vaccinated and wash your hands before and after your work out. It would also help to wear a face mask and distance yourself from other gym users where possible.
For preventing skin infections, always cover any cuts or scratches with a dressing. Also, showering after your workout and putting on clean clothes is both refreshing and an effective way of removing any skin germs picked up during exercising. Finally, don’t forget to think about the hygiene of your gym kit bag, as it holds all our germ-heavy towels and exercise clothes. To reduce germ, build up and smells, it will need to be sanitised every use or two.

Premier League: Arsenal secure incredible comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur, reduce gap with toppers Liverpool
Arsenal pulled off an incredible comeback victory against Tottenham in a thrilling London derby at Emirates Stadium. After falling behind early to Son Heung-min's deflected goal, the Gunners responded brilliantly with goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Leandro Trossard before halftime. The win keeps Arsenal in second place, just four points behind league leaders Liverpool. Manager Mikel Arteta praised his team's outstanding performance and resilience despite a tough schedule.
Arsenal registered an incredible comeback win over Tottenham Hotspurs at the home arena of Emirates Stadium on early Thursday morning, with two quick goals in the first half helping the side make a comeback after an initial goal by Son Heung-min that put the visitors in front.
After a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, it was important for the Gunners to increase their chances at the title with a win.
Gunners was warned by Dejan Kulusevski, as he forced David Raya into making a fine save from a corner, but in the 25th minute, Son's strike from the box's edge took a deflection off Thomas Partey and went past the Gunners goalie, sending the home fans into shock.
Arsenal's problems with attacking continued till the 40th minute and when they finally got the opportunity, they did make the best out of it. A fine corner kick by Declan Rice met a fine connection from Gabriel Magalhaes, whose header came off Dominic Solanke's chest and went into the nets to level the scores.
Four minutes later, just a minute away from half-time, Arsenal finally wrestled their way into a lead as a fine assist from Martin
was
whose drive went through the hands of
Kinsky and into the far corner of the goal.
Arsenal could relax better in the second half, but Kai Havertz continued his poor streak. After missing chances against Newcastle and Manchester United, he missed two more chances to score inside the box. However, Arsenal was able to maintain the scoreline till the end and gave themselves three full points.
With 12 wins, seven draws and two losses, Arsenal is in second place in the points table
with 43 points, four behind Liverpool (47). Spurs sit in the 13th spot with seven wins, three draws and 11 losses, giving them 24 points.
Following the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said as quoted by Sky Sports, "The boys were outstanding. We played 120 minutes less than 72 hours ago, but the way we performed was exceptional. We made it hard for ourselves, but the attitude was outstanding. The purpose and intensity was really good."
"We play every three days, so it is just a foundation, it is about the next day now. We
won today, great, but now it is about Aston Villa. My confidence comes from what I see every day, not just results. Sometimes in football, you do not get what you deserve. We cannot feel sorry for ourselves. What we can control is performance, and today they have done it again," he concluded.
Also, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said as quoted by Sky Sports, "Not good enough, especially the first half which was way too passive. We allowed Arsenal to take control. I was disappointed with us with and without the ball, allowing them to dictate the tempo. Nowhere near good enough."
"That is not who we are. That is not how I set the team up to play. To be sitting in and allowing Arsenal to play just was not good enough."
"There is no magic cure. We need to work hard and go into battle on Sunday and turn around our fortunes and our season. There are always reasons why things happen, but the reality is our results and form in the league have been nowhere near good enough. That needs to change."
"We just did not play near the identity of what I want us to be. We are an aggressive team with and without the ball - we showed that against Liverpool but tonight we were way too passive. That is not acceptable. The second half was a little better, but it was not enough."
"This can't be accepted by anyone at the club, us losing so many games in a league season is not right. Yes, we are asking big jobs, but I hope the 18-year-olds [Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall] are hurting as much as anyone else in terms of not being able to deliver on a big day," he concluded.
Arman Tsarukyan Could Ditch Belt for Money Fights after UFC 311: ‘Conor or Whatever’
Arman Tsarukyan suggests non-title fights against Ilia Topuria, Conor McGregor, Charles Oliveira, and Michael Chandler after UFC 311.
The UFC lightweight title remains the goal for #1 contender Arman Tsarukyan ahead of his rematch versus champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 this Saturday in L.A, but the goal posts could surely move with a title win for Tsarukyan.
Days away from the biggest fight of his life, Tsarukyan's not motivated by revenge for a 2019 loss to Makhachev in his promotional debut, but by the gold belt that signifies the holder is the best in the world. Tsarukyan's one spot and one fight away from making that happen, opening so many doors for opportunities should he dethrone the UFC's #1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter.
'Newcastle Utd can't take the eye off the ball in 'unforgiving' Premier League', says Howe
Newcastle United are riding high after an impressive winning streak that's lifted them to fifth in the Premier League. Manager Eddie Howe is keeping the team grounded, warning against any potential complacency in what he describes as an "unforgiving" league. The Magpies are set to face Wolves in a potentially tricky midweek fixture, with Howe stressing the importance of maintaining their focus and approach. Despite their recent success, the team is taking nothing for granted and remains committed to their game-by-game strategy.
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says his in-form side 'can't take the eye off the ball' as they look to extend their winning run against Wolves in the Premier League on Thursday (IST).
United face Vitor Pereira's men in midweek, looking for a ninth straight win in all competitions, a run that has lifted them to fifth in the Premier League, the semifinals of the Carabao Cup and the fourth round of the FA Cup.
But Howe insists his charges must continue to approach each game in the same manner they have done in their recent run-in and said the visit of Wolves has the makings of a "dangerous game" for the Magpies.
"For me, I know it's boring, but it's game by game
and it's trying to keep our focus on what we can affect, which is our next training session, our next game. It's making sure that we're not getting ahead of ourselves in both ways - when we were having a disappointing run, it was about making sure we didn't throw everything out and become despondent, and it's exactly the same when you're winning.
"It's making sure you're consistent with what you do, the messages are clear, and we focus and don't take this position for granted. The Premier League is an unforgiving league, and we can't take our eye off the ball,” said Howe in a press conference.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers have lost only one game so far, 0-3 loss against Nottingham Forest, under new head coach Victor Pereira. He succeeded Gary O'Neil at the club following the 1-2 loss against Ipswich Town and has led the team to wins against Leicester City, Manchester United and Bristol City alongside the 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
"It's a dangerous game for us, because Wolves are a good team, as I say, so we don't underestimate anyone in the Premier League. We know how difficult the league is. You have to be focused and mentally right to win any game. I think they're all challenges that we face. But we believe in ourselves, we're at home and we love playing at home, so there's a lot going for us as well," Howe added.
Former Man City captain and coach, Tony Book passes away aged 90
Tony Book was an extraordinary Manchester City legend who made incredible contributions both on and off the pitch. His career spanned from being a player to captain and then manager, during which he led the team to numerous prestigious titles. Book was known not just for his sporting achievements, but for his incredible humility and dedication to the club. His legacy will continue to inspire Manchester City fans for generations to come.
Manchester City have announced the passing of former captain and manager Tony Book aged 90. A true club legend, Tony made 315 appearances for City in total between 1966 and 1974, scoring five goals.
Tony passed away peacefully on Monday and leaves behind his wife Sylvia, children Anthony and Tracey along with grandson Jake, and great-grandsons Ashley and Brody.
"Everyone at Manchester City would like to send their heartfelt condolences to Tony's family and friends at this very sad time. As a mark of respect, flags around the Etihad Stadium and City Football Academy are flying at half-mast. More tributes from the Club will follow in the coming days," read the statement by the club. Appointed captain in 1967, Tony went on to lead City to
a First Division title, an FA Cup, a League Cup, a European Cup Winners' Cup and a Charity Shield title across what was a golden era of success. That alone would have cemented his standing as one of the Club's all-time greats. However, Tony then further emphasised his unique place in City folklore by embarking on what was to prove a hugely successful spell as manager between 1974 and 1979.
The highlight of his time in charge came in 1976 when Tony led City to League Cup glory at Wembley, with Skip also guiding City to runners-up position in Division One in the 1976/77 campaign. His enormous impact at the Club was further illustrated in the following decade when, by then serving as youth coach, he helped inspire City to a first-ever FA Youth Cup triumph in 1986. He was subsequently named an Honorary President as well as held down a role as Life President of the Official Supporters Club and remained a hugely popular member of the matchday legends at Etihad home games.
"For nearly sixty years Tony helped to shape Manchester City. Not just in what he contributed as a player, captain, and manager, but in the way he conducted himself. His hopes and ambitions for his club were matched only by his incredible humility regarding his own significant achievements.
"He will forever be remembered by our supporters as a man who helped to lay the foundations upon which unprecedented success could be built. A player and leader whose outstanding abilities not only helped return us to the peak of English football but also delivered our first ever European honour" read the statement by City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

Cristiano Ronaldo Secures Record-Breaking Contract Extension with Al-Nassr
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to remain the highest-paid footballer in the world following the announcement of a new contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. The Portuguese star’s updated deal, which extends his stay until 2026, will see him earning a staggering €183 million annually—equivalent to €550,000 per day. The agreement also grants Ronaldo a five percent ownership stake in the club, solidifying his influence both on and off the pitch.
A Milestone in Football
Contracts
The new deal comes shortly after speculation that Ronaldo might leave Al-Nassr in 2025. Reports from Saudi media outlet Al Khobar and Portugal’s O Jogo reveal that the 39-yearold forward has signed a one-year extension, adding to his initial contract set to expire after the 2024-25 season. With this extension, Ronaldo will now earn over €200 million annually, reinforcing his position as the highest-paid athlete globally.
Ronaldo initially joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 from Manchester United on a groundbreaking €200 million-per-year contract. This latest agreement not only boosts his earnings but also demonstrates the club’s commitment to its star player as he continues to make a significant impact in the Saudi Pro League.
Ronaldo’s
Despite earlier rumors suggesting a potential return to his first club, Sporting CP, Ronaldo has reaffirmed his commitment to Al-Nassr and life in Saudi Arabia. Speaking earlier this month, he expressed his contentment:
“I’m happy, and my family is happy. We started a new life in this beautiful country. Life is good, football is good. In terms of individual and collective achievements, we are still there, still improving.”
He also acknowledged the competition in the Saudi Pro League:
“It’s hard to compete with teams like Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, but we are still pushing and fighting. Football has its good moments and bad moments, but the most important thing is to be professional, respect the club, and believe in the possibility of winning more titles.”
Ownership Stake: A Bold Move by Al-Nassr
One of the most intriguing aspects of Ronaldo’s new contract is the inclusion of a minority ownership stake in Al-Nassr, as reported by Spanish newspaper Marca. This unprecedented move allows Ronaldo to have a say in the club’s decision-making process, a gesture that reflects Al-Nassr’s trust in their marquee player and his potential to contribute beyond the game.
This decision underscores Ronaldo’s longterm commitment to Saudi football and his ambition to stay in peak condition for the 2026
World Cup. It also dismisses any lingering doubts about his retirement plans.
Ronaldo’s Impact on Al-Nassr and Beyond
Since joining Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has been a transformative figure, scoring 75 goals for the club and maintaining his extraordinary form. In the ongoing season, he has already scored 11 goals and registered two assists in 13 matches, helping Al-Nassr secure third place in the league standings with 28 points from 14 matches.
His overall career tally now stands at an incredible 911 goals across club and international levels, a testament to his unparalleled consistency and dedication.
A Legacy in the Making
Ronaldo’s decision to continue with AlNassr reflects his unwavering drive to achieve greatness, both as a player and as a leader within the club. The contract extension not only cements his status as a global football icon but also showcases the growing appeal of the Saudi Pro League as a competitive platform for world-class talent.
With his record-breaking earnings, continued goal-scoring exploits, and newfound role as part-owner of Al-Nassr, Ronaldo is redefining the boundaries of a footballer’s influence, paving the way for future generations to follow.
