EDITOR’S LETTER I am so in love with this issue, as it's all about 'Girl Power' International Women's Day and Mother's Day round the corner, I hope you lovely people have some amazing things planned to celebrate womanhood and motherhood. We will definitely be having a blast in the Asian Style office. Packed in this edition, we have your usual dose of Fashion, Beauty and Style. Adding to that is the cheeky and cute Manish Paul, who is famously known for his TV anchoring skills on programmes such as Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. We caught up with him on his recent flick Tere Bin Laden - Dead or Alive. The man is funny, but hasn't had it easy, please do read the interview. Prep, prep, prep your skin! To get a healthy glow, make sure you gently massage a hydrating day cream before you start with your makeup. Add a dash of MAC Strobe cream for that ‘lit-from-within’ effect!

Line the bottom lash line using a fleshcoloured eye pencil (white will be too harsh for this look!)

Apply (and buff in) a medium coverage dewy foundation

Line the eye with a black gel liner and while the liner is still wet, use a smudging brush to gently smudge out at the outer corners to create a subtle feline flick.

There are very few families that have stuck together over the decades like the Kapoors have. Be it the famous Christmas lunches or the birthdays – they believe in celebrating in style. So when Randhir Kapoor, father to Karisma and Kareena turned 69, it was no surprise that the family showed up in full force to wish him. That’s definitely one good looking gene pool!

Not many years ago, Priyanka Chopra, asked audiences – ‘ who’s the hottest girl in the world?’. Well, it seems like the answer really is the ‘desi girl’ herself. PeeCee as she is fondly called, has been making waves in Hollywood with her singing and more recently with her TV series ‘Quantico’. Now it is the silver screen calling, as she has been chosen to star opposite The Rock and Zac Efron in the latest ‘Baywatch’ film. Shine on, Priyanka!

It’s not very often that we get to see superstars making an effort to understand what their millions of fans feel for them. Shah Rukh Khan, who is all set to bring us a fan’s journey with ‘Fan’ on April 15th, launched the anthem of the film at his own alma matter, Delhi’s Hansraj College. The occasion was made even more special for Mr Khan when he finally received his graduation degree from the college on the day. It made for one unforgettable graduation ceremony!

While the debate over this year’s most awaited film continues, we have this - Salman Khan’s look for his upcoming ‘Sultan’ that the actor shared on Instagram recently. The actor plays a wrestler in the film and the beautiful Anushka Sharma has been cast as his leading lady. Clean-shaven, rugged and with a killer body – we are already quite excited about seeing Salman onscreen as Sultan!

How can a round up of social media ever be complete without it’s most charming member – Ranveer Singh. Ranveer, who further cemented his ‘ Best Boyfriend’ tag when he flew all the way to Toronto to be with girlfriend Deepika Padukone on Valentine’s Day, shared this fanboy moment from a basketball match that he attended. Anushka Sharma’s year got off to a mixed start – while she bagged the much-coveted lead role in Salman Khan’s next, ‘Sultan’, rumours have suggested that all is not well on the personal front. According to reports, Anushka has split with beau Virat Kohli. Neither of them have said anything publically yet but if this fresh-faced selfie that Anushka shared is anything to go by, she seems to be taking the break-up in her stride. More power to her!

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor got together to launch the trailer of their rather unique love story – Ki & Ka in Mumbai. Paneer Pakoras Paneer Pakora is a delicacy! Marinated paneer dipped in a batter and fry makes a crispy, mouthwatering appetizer. Crispy outside and soft inside, these pakoras are addictive. A perfect snack with afternoon tea. Ingredients 4 oz paneer thinly slice in about 1” squares this will make about 14-16 slices (available in Indian grocery stores) 2 tablespoons yogurt (curd, dahi) 4 tablespoon corn starch or arrowroot 1 teaspoon ginger paste 1 green chili minced 1/2 teaspoon salt

There are many reasons to mix and match your furniture. Merging households, inherited furnishings, well-intentioned gifts that miss the mark (yes the one that auntiji bought you when you got married and she asks where it is every time she visits), and the occasional impulse buy, whatever the reason, no one wants a junk yard. So how do you get the perfect interior look without having to compromise on furnishings that you just can’t throw away? Well it will be easy to execute if

you try and stick to the 80/20 rule. There are many do’s and don’ts, but ultimately our advice is the best way to keep a happy medium is to just have try and have fun with design. So what is the 80/20 rule? Well our experts explain that as long as 80 per cent of your interior is unified by the same style, same period or same philosophy, you can deviate with the other 20 per cent. In other words, a fine antique can absolutely work in an ultramodern space.

Leading design expert Kimberley Seldon has written extensively on the 80/20 rule.

She offers some valuable tips on the perfect recipe for getting the mix right and creating rooms that feel cohesive instead of crazy. Some styles just don’t mix. For example, Victorian decor is all about ornate excess, while Arts and Crafts favours simplicity. Therefore, Victorian decor marries well with Edwardian, Asian, formal English, and French furniture, while Arts and Crafts is better with contemporary pieces or country styles, like Shaker. But with the 80/20 rule you can mix almost anything. Say you have a loft filled with modern classic furniture -- add a superb antique settee, et voilà. It works.

When mixing woods, consider formality: mahogany, cherry and oak are formal, so they’ll go well with one another. Pine, maple, and bamboo are casual choices, which means that they’re compatible with one another but less so with formal woods. When more than one rug is required in an open space, be sure to choose carpets that harmonise rather than match. For example, neutral sisal may work with a faded Turkish or Kilim rug but looks too humble beside a fine Persian. In general, contemporary interiors feature 20 per cent multitone patterns and 80 per cent solid or tone-on-tone materials. Traditional interiors tip the balance in favour of patterns. So if your family room is modern with monochromatic neutral fabrics, add some large floralpatterned pillows. Conversely, a traditional pattern-filled room

requires visual breathing space, so incorporate solid

expanses of colour.

Dos and don’ts of the DO revitalise neutral interiors with punctuations of colour. A small addition of striking colour, say, a series of vases in chartreuse or a pair of pillows in cobalt, can transform the mood and personality of a room. DON’T rely solely on ambient or general illumination for rooms. If 80 per cent of your lighting is overhead, such as halogens or ceilingmounted fixtures, for example, incorporate a 20 per cent ratio of decorative lighting, like sconces, table lamps, art lamps and library lights, to create interest and draw attention to collections and paintings.

Ranbir to play an anti-hero in Ayan Mukherji’s superhero trilogy Ranbir Kapoor and Ayan Mukherji’s next superhero film is making news for the first time in quite a while. Although there have not been any big developments since the initital announcement, the latest reports suggest that the film may go on floors in mid 2016. Ranbir who, in spite of being an excellent actor is going through a bad phase, will reportedly begin the shooting for this film after the completion of ‘Ae Dil Hain Muskil’ and ‘Jagga Jasoos’ which are currently in wrapping stage. Ranbir recently revealed some fascinating tidbits about this much talked about superhero project. According to him, the film is tentatively titled ‘The Dragon’, and will be a trilogy which Ayan plans to complete by 2025. “Ayan is making a film which he wants to spend the next 10 years of his life on. It’s a three-part saga, so he’s still

Actor Sikandar Kher the ‘dark horse’ in Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive Kanye West feels Taylor Swift isn’t `cool` anymore Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive actor, Pradhuman Singh, says that fellow co-actor Sikandar Kher is the dark horse of the upcoming film, courtesy of his intriguing double role in it. “Sikandar is the dark horse of the film. His character is brilliant. He’s playing a white guy and a Punjabi guy; it’s a kind of a double role – the same person, but he changes his appearance,” Pradhuman says. While he appears with blonde hair and a foreign accent as a white guy, Sikandar Kher, the son of seasoned Indian actress Kirron Kher, and the step-son of actor Anupam Kher, sports a hairy look and a paunch for his Indian Punjabi avatar in the

film. Pradhuman, who famously essayed ‘Noora’ in the 2010 Tere Bin Laden, says he had “unparalleled fun” while working with Sikandar and Manish Paul in the movie’s sequel. “None of them (the actors) had any insecurity in them. It’s called a spinoff, not a sequel because the story is completely different. The two films are not attached. The part two doesn’t start from where the part one ended. So that’s why we are calling it a spin-off and not a sequel. I think it’s more funny. There are more characters in the film. The storyline is completely mind blowing and that was the reason I signed the film. I loved the idea of how this guy which I am playing (A. Sharma who wants to become a director) takes the film forward. People will see that how part one was made so that’s what we included in part two. ‘Helicopter silent hai...’ scene is creating enough buzz everywhere. How was this concept developed? Yes I am very happy with the way the helicopter scene has picked up. I think it was the idea of Abhishek Sharma. He wanted to write a scene like that. In fact ek scene aaya tha between Mehmood saab and Omprakash saab, that was our inspiration for this scene. But all those sounds that I’ve put was my idea. I just came out

Coming to your personal life, you started out as a radio jockey then VJ, then did television soaps, comedy shows, hosted reality programs and now finally in films, how do you feel about your journey so far? I think the journey so far has been wonderful. I’ve no regrets. I came to Mumbai ten years back. I came in 2005 and so far the kind of love I’ve received from audiences I am damn happy with that. The kind of love the industry has given me I am very happy and I feel I’ve more to give to the industry. I feel even more charged. Yes, I was an RJ, VJ, did television soaps and comedy shows. But hosting reality program that I think was the game changer for me. When I started hosting especially ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘Dance India Dance’, that time people realised that he can host, he can do much more. A lot of people in fact told me that you

can now leave television because you are doing films now. But I still feel that whatever I’ve got - the fame, the kind of work I’ve got, the love from people, that has been from television. So I can’t ditch that. I’ve got my movies from television so I don’t feel like ditching the medium. It’s a huge medium. A lot of people who are doing movies are getting in to television, they are hosting shows now. So I am happy balancing in both the places. What would you say has been the toughest phase of your life? How did you overcome to it? The toughest phase has been the year 2008. That was the year I decided that I wasn’t very happy doing television, the kind of shows I was doing, the kind of roles I was being offered. So I consistently took the decision that I don’t want to work in daily soaps, especially as I wasn’t very happy with the roles. So that was the year I took a consistent decision and I was sitting at home for one year doing nothing. I just got married one year back and it was a difficult time. I didn’t have too much money.

Much like her character in the film, Kangana had had to leave home and discover herself at a very young age. At 16, Kangana decided to leave her hometown, a small city in Himanchal Pradesh, and moved to Delhi to find out her true calling. After months of doing small roles, Kangana was encouraged to go to Mumbai and try her luck in the Indian Film Industry. As part of your bedtime skincare, you can massage the oil between two fingers and then give a gentle coat to your lashes. You do have to make sure that you are using a very small quantity. If you are not comfortable using oil, you can also get lash serums from skincare brands such as Clinique and Lancome that strengthen lashes over time.

Ever since I have entered my forties, my skin has started breaking out and that leaves acne scars behind. What can I do to stop the acne problems and to cover the marks when using makeup?

Poets Corner Sarojini Naidu Known commonly as ‘The Nightingale of India’, Sarojini Naidu was an Indian political activist, poet and writer. Naidu served as the first governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh; the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state. She was the second woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and the first Indian woman to do so. Naidu was a strong and independent woman who broke down barriers in all areas of her life. Born in 1879, she was a dedicated feminist and devoted mother to five children, whilst juggling her thriving writing career alongside a rising political one. She first began

writing at the age of 12, and continued to delight and impress others right up until after her death, when her final collection of poems ‘The Feather of Dawn’ was published posthumously by her daughter. So revered is she across India that her birthday, 13th February, is celebrated as ‘National Women’s Day’ in the country in honour of the works done by her for the development of women’s rights in India. We think that Sarojini Naidu really embodies the type of inspirational and influential woman that we are celebrating this issue, and we hope her poetry manages to touch your heart as it has so many before.
