Sonam Kapoor has been making headlines with her fresh and classy look in Neerja, which she hascontinued with during the film’s promotions. Sonam might have the industry’s best makeup artists on hand, but don’t worry - we can help you recreate this look at home. Read on for a step-by-step tutorial!

Look

Prep, prep, prep your skin! To get a healthy glow, make sure you gently massage a hydrating day cream before you start with your makeup. Add a dash of MAC Strobe cream for that ‘lit-from-within’ effect!

Line the bottom lash line using a fleshcoloured eye pencil (white will be too harsh for this look!)

2

Apply (and buff in) a medium coverage dewy foundation

Line the eye with a black gel liner and while the liner is still wet, use a smudging brush to gently smudge out at the outer corners to create a subtle feline flick.

Finish the eyes with a generous amount of mascara! Or for extra oomph put on a pair of false lashes!

Add some creambased blush in a dusty rose colour to the apples of the cheeks.

Fill in the brows with a dark brown brow pencil or pomade.

8

And now to my favourite part of the look - the lips! Apply Bobbi Brown’s Art Pencil, which gives you the precision of a pencil with the texture of a lipstick in the shade ‘Hot Berry’ lipstick, for that bright pink pout!

We bring you the roundup of the trending Instagram posts from the fortnight. Definitely #InstaHOT, we say!

There are very few families that have stuck together over the decades like the Kapoors have. Be it the famous Christmas lunches or the birthdays – they believe in celebrating in style. So when Randhir Kapoor, father to Karisma and Kareena turned 69, it was no surprise that the family showed up in full force to wish him. That’s definitely one good looking gene pool!

Not many years ago, Priyanka Chopra, asked audiences – ‘ who’s the hottest girl in the world?’. Well, it seems like the answer really is the ‘desi girl’ herself. PeeCee as she is fondly called, has been making waves in Hollywood with her singing and more recently with her TV series ‘Quantico’. Now it is the silver screen calling, as she has been chosen to star opposite The Rock and Zac Efron in the latest ‘Baywatch’ film. Shine on, Priyanka!

It’s not very often that we get to see superstars making an effort to understand what their millions of fans feel for them. Shah Rukh Khan, who is all set to bring us a fan’s journey with ‘Fan’ on April 15th, launched the anthem of the film at his own alma matter, Delhi’s Hansraj College. The occasion was made even more special for Mr Khan when he finally received his graduation degree from the college on the day. It made for one unforgettable graduation ceremony!

While the debate over this year’s most awaited film continues, we have this - Salman Khan’s look for his upcoming ‘Sultan’ that the actor shared on Instagram recently. The actor plays a wrestler in the film and the beautiful Anushka Sharma has been cast as his leading lady. Clean-shaven, rugged and with a killer body – we are already quite excited about seeing Salman onscreen as Sultan!

How can a round up of social media ever be complete without it’s most charming member – Ranveer Singh. Ranveer, who further cemented his ‘ Best Boyfriend’ tag when he flew all the way to Toronto to be with girlfriend Deepika Padukone on Valentine’s Day, shared this fanboy moment from a basketball match that he attended. The very excited Ranveer points towards His Airness, Michael Jordan himself! Now that’s one selfie we would want to be a part of.

Anushka Sharma’s year got off to a mixed start – while she bagged the much-coveted lead role in Salman Khan’s next, ‘Sultan’, rumours have suggested that all is not well on the personal front. According to reports, Anushka has split with beau Virat Kohli. Neither of them have said anything publically yet but if this fresh-faced selfie that Anushka shared is anything to go by, she seems to be taking the break-up in her stride. More power to her!

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor got together to launch the trailer of their rather unique love story – Ki & Ka in Mumbai. The fresh pairing and the role reversal storyline has us intrigued about the film. At the launch itself, the two shared an undeniable chemistry and this one moment in particular made us go ‘ awww’ !

Furniture mix and match

Feb 2016, 2nd Edition

by Raheema Khan

There are many reasons to mix and match your furniture. Merging households, inherited furnishings, well-intentioned gifts that miss the mark (yes the one that auntiji bought you when you got married and she asks where it is every time she visits), and the occasional impulse buy, whatever the reason, no one wants a junk yard. So how do you get the perfect interior look without having to compromise on furnishings that you just can’t throw away? Well it will be easy to execute if

you try and stick to the 80/20 rule. There are many do’s and don’ts, but ultimately our advice is the best way to keep a happy medium is to just have try and have fun with design. So what is the 80/20 rule? Well our experts explain that as long as 80 per cent of your interior is unified by the same style, same period or same philosophy, you can deviate with the other 20 per cent. In other words, a fine antique can absolutely work in an ultramodern space.

Leading design expert Kimberley Seldon has written extensively on the 80/20 rule.

She offers some valuable tips on the perfect recipe for getting the mix right and creating rooms that feel cohesive instead of crazy. Some styles just don’t mix. For example, Victorian decor is all about ornate excess, while Arts and Crafts favours simplicity. Therefore, Victorian decor marries well with Edwardian, Asian, formal English, and French furniture, while Arts and Crafts is better with contemporary pieces or country styles, like Shaker. But with the 80/20 rule you can mix almost anything. Say you have a loft filled with modern classic furniture -- add a superb antique settee, et voilà. It works.

When mixing woods, consider formality: mahogany, cherry and oak are formal, so they’ll go well with one another. Pine, maple, and bamboo are casual choices, which means that they’re compatible with one another but less so with formal woods. When more than one rug is required in an open space, be sure to choose carpets that harmonise rather than match. For example, neutral sisal may work with a faded Turkish or Kilim rug but looks too humble beside a fine Persian. In general, contemporary interiors feature 20 per cent multitone patterns and 80 per cent solid or tone-on-tone materials. Traditional interiors tip the balance in favour of patterns. So if your family room is modern with monochromatic neutral fabrics, add some large floralpatterned pillows. Conversely, a traditional pattern-filled room

requires visual breathing space, so incorporate solid

expanses of colour.

Dos and don’ts of the DO revitalise neutral interiors with punctuations of colour. A small addition of striking colour, say, a series of vases in chartreuse or a pair of pillows in cobalt, can transform the mood and personality of a room. DON’T rely solely on ambient or general illumination for rooms. If 80 per cent of your lighting is overhead, such as halogens or ceilingmounted fixtures, for example, incorporate a 20 per cent ratio of decorative lighting, like sconces, table lamps, art lamps and library lights, to create interest and draw attention to collections and paintings.

80/20

rule

DON’T show too much leg. When mixing upholstered furniture and occasional tables, it’s more attractive to vary the ratio of skirt to leg. In most cases, 20 per cent skirting (either a soft skirt like the apron of a sofa, or a piece of furniture with no legs) is ideal. DO save money and create a more upscale look in the bathroom or kitchen by combining 80 per cent stock cabinetry with 20 per cent semicustom or custom options. That allows you to create one standout focal feature, such as a stainless-steel medicine cabinet or a Gothic arch valance above the kitchen sink.

Actor Sikandar Kher the ‘dark horse’ in Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive Kanye West feels Taylor Swift isn’t `cool` anymore Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive actor, Pradhuman Singh, says that fellow co-actor Sikandar Kher is the dark horse of the upcoming film, courtesy of his intriguing double role in it. “Sikandar is the dark horse of the film. His character is brilliant. He’s playing a white guy and a Punjabi guy; it’s a kind of a double role – the same person, but he changes his appearance,” Pradhuman says. While he appears with blonde hair and a foreign accent as a white guy, Sikandar Kher, the son of seasoned Indian actress Kirron Kher, and the step-son of actor Anupam Kher, sports a hairy look and a paunch for his Indian Punjabi avatar in the

film. Pradhuman, who famously essayed ‘Noora’ in the 2010 Tere Bin Laden, says he had “unparalleled fun” while working with Sikandar and Manish Paul in the movie’s sequel. “None of them (the actors) had any insecurity in them. We were supporting each other,” he tells, adding that they became friends during the making of the film. Pradhuman is also one of the writers of the film, an idea that came from director, Abhishek Sharma. He says he’s “extremely happy” with the outcome “because it has been exactly the kind of characters that I wanted to write.”

Kanye West again flamed up the long-drawn war between him and Taylor Swift over the lyrics of his song ‘Famous.’ Dissing Swift once again, the 38-year-old rapper told a crowd at a nightclub that “she is not cool anymore,” reports News.com.au. The rapper called out the 26-year-old singer and reiterated that she was aware of the controversial lyrics about her in his song ‘Famous.’ In the track, which is from his new album ‘The Life of Pablo,’ West calls Swift a ‘bitch’ and says he made her famous. In response, Swift subtly bashed West’s comments while accepting the ‘Album of the Year’ accolade at the ‘Grammy Awards’ earlier this month. West said that he spoke about the lyrics to Swift and she gave consent to it then. He even asked to “make her stop trying to make up stories” now and “She not cool no more, she had two seconds to be cool and she f**ked it up.” After the song was released, a representative for the ‘Out of the Wood’ singer denied that she was aware of the controversial lyrics.

Manish Paul talks all about

‘Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive by Rahul Raut How is ‘Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive’ different from the first part? What should audiences expect from this spin-off? It’s different. It’s called a spinoff, not a sequel because the story is completely different. The two films are not attached. The part two doesn’t start from where the part one ended. So that’s why we are calling it a spin-off and not a sequel. I think it’s more funny. There are more characters in the film. The storyline is completely mind blowing and that was the reason I signed the film. I loved the idea of how this guy which I am playing (A. Sharma who wants to become a director) takes the film forward. People will see that how part one was made so that’s what we included in part two. ‘Helicopter silent hai...’ scene is creating enough buzz everywhere. How was this concept developed? Yes I am very happy with the way the helicopter scene has picked up. I think it was the idea of Abhishek Sharma. He wanted to write a scene like that. In fact ek scene aaya tha between Mehmood saab and Omprakash saab, that was our inspiration for this scene. But all those sounds that I’ve put was my idea. I just came out

That one year main kapde dhota tha, iron karta tha and was taking care of home and my wife was earning. That was very difficult because first I was feeling that I’ve got her to this city, I’ve made some promises to her so I need to keep all those but it was not happening and I was feeling broken down sometimes. reacting. Thankfully, it happened in one take. I had prepared myself too much for that. Mujhe dar bhi tha but nervousness me kai bar acche kam ho jate hai. I had great time performing in that scene. Coming to your personal life, you started out as a radio jockey then VJ, then did television soaps, comedy shows, hosted reality programs and now finally in films, how do you feel about your journey so far? I think the journey so far has been wonderful. I’ve no regrets. I came to Mumbai ten years back. I came in 2005 and so far the kind of love I’ve received from audiences I am damn happy with that. The kind of love the industry has given me I am very happy and I feel I’ve more to give to the industry. I feel even more charged. Yes, I was an RJ, VJ, did television soaps and comedy shows. But hosting reality program that I think was the game changer for me. When I started hosting especially ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘Dance India Dance’, that time people realised that he can host, he can do much more. A lot of people in fact told me that you

can now leave television because you are doing films now. But I still feel that whatever I’ve got - the fame, the kind of work I’ve got, the love from people, that has been from television. So I can’t ditch that. I’ve got my movies from television so I don’t feel like ditching the medium. It’s a huge medium. A lot of people who are doing movies are getting in to television, they are hosting shows now. So I am happy balancing in both the places. What would you say has been the toughest phase of your life? How did you overcome to it? The toughest phase has been the year 2008. That was the year I decided that I wasn’t very happy doing television, the kind of shows I was doing, the kind of roles I was being offered. So I consistently took the decision that I don’t want to work in daily soaps, especially as I wasn’t very happy with the roles. So that was the year I took a consistent decision and I was sitting at home for one year doing nothing. I just got married one year back and it was a difficult time. I didn’t have too much money.

But thankfully my wife really really helped me and supported me in my decision and said “Don’t worry. I am here and I will take care of things”. That one year main kapde dhota tha, iron karta tha and was taking care of home and my wife was earning. That was very

Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ both are releasing on the same day this Eid. Which film would you watch first? Let’s see whoever invites me first and I’ll definitely go for that screening. I don’t know but I can’t choose one right now so I should wait from where I get the call first.

That was very difficult because first I was feeling that I’ve got her to this city, I’ve made some promises to her so I need to keep all those but it was not happening and I was feeling broken down sometimes. But thankfully my wife supported me a lot and she didn’t let me give up on the situation. She said, “Don’t worry! Do what you think is good. Do what you feel like doing”. Because I can’t do what most people do just earn money and come back. I like to work where I get creatively satisfied. So that was the very very tough period because sitting at home for one year is not easy at all. Darshan Rawal recently said in an interview that something special with Manish Paul is lined up. Would you like to tell what is that? Yes, he said something and all I can also say

that there is something special but right now we would like to keep it a surprise. But definitely this year, something is gonna be out. With Darshan and me together, it’s gonna be fantastic. What else will audiences and fans get to see from Manish Paul this year? This year, ‘Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive’ is definitely there and I also just finished shooting for a movie called, ‘Katha’ which is the remake of the old ‘Katha’ and it’s directed by Khaleed Mohammad. That film is under post work right now so let’s hope wo jaldi complete ho. Hopefully it should be ready to release this year and people would get to see that film. Apart from that I am doing another film called, ‘Baba Black Ship’. It’s a father-son’s story. Anupam Kher sir is playing my father. In fact, I am shooting for it right now. And yes, reality shows also should be there. I haven’t signed

any shows exactly yet but I try to do one show every year so that I can keep my audience really happy because they love to see me host also. And I promise to them that I would try my best to host a season. So let’s see which one is that. Fast & Furious round What’s your motto in life? My motto in life is very filmy, sorry but that’s how I am. I am very filmy guy. So my motto is: “Jio muskurao khush raho.. Kya pata kal ho na ho”. I never sleep with a fight in my head. If there

Who is easy to handle wife or girlfriend? In my case, my girlfriend who was my girlfriend for nine years, became my wife. So I think girlfriend and wife both are easy. I never had a problem. And thankfully I am blessed to have a partner like that who is so understanding and helps me out with everything. So I think I am very sorted with that. Bollywood’s leading women of courage, strength, independence and resilience

got the credit and acclaim that she was due.

Kangana Ranaut as Rani Mehra in ‘Queen’

by Ayesha Babar We hear a lot about how Bollywood is a place where nepotism thrives and star kids are launched with much fanfare while ordinary hopefuls, regardless of talent, wait for years and sometimes decades to be noticed. In the cut-throat world of Indian cinema, there are few examples

of actors who have been complete outsiders and yet have managed to make a mark. Out of these, even fewer have been women. These rare women have impressed us with their talent, tenacity and hard work Individuals belonging to families that have little to do with the business of Bollywood. The last decade, particularly

since 2012, has been a special time for such women. 2014 was an interesting year, where suddenly the one film that everyone was talking about and rooting for was not a Salman Khan blockbuster – it was ‘Queen’, a relatively small film with a big heart. Its leading lady Kangana Ranaut finally

Much like her character in the film, Kangana had had to leave home and discover herself at a very young age. At 16, Kangana decided to leave her hometown, a small city in Himanchal Pradesh, and moved to Delhi to find out her true calling. Soon she got involved with a theatre group known as Asmita, learning the ropes of the craft from Arvind Gaur. After months of doing small roles, Kangana was encouraged to go to Mumbai and try her luck in the Indian Film Industry. Once in Mumbai, it was through sheer hard work and back-to-back auditions that she finally landed her first role in ‘Gangster’ in 2006. She was still only 18 at that time!

Over the next few years of being typecast as a neurotic character who was struggling with drugs and depression, Kangana kept persevering to land a role that allowed her to showcase her full talent. With her curly hair and accented hindi, she was not looked upon as typical heroine material. That is when ‘Fashion’ appeared. The role brought her talent to the forefront, winning her a National Award in the process. Since then she has proven herself time and time again, with mainstream success and acceptance finally coming her way with ‘Tanu weds Manu’ and ‘Queen’. These hits have allowed her opportunities like ‘Tanu weds Manu Returns’ and more, showing that the faith reposed in her is well-placed! Kangana is part of the brigade of young women who have made a name for themselves not just for playing arm candy to a superstar male actor, but also for what they bring to the characters

and delivered knockout performances. Icons like Amitabh Bachchan, who Padukone worked with in ‘Piku’, have celebrated her talent and said that she is one of the finest acting talents to have emerged in recent years. Deepika Padukone as Meera Sahni in ‘Cocktail’

that they play. Deepika Padukone, who has been winning over audiences and critics alike in the last few years, has been mastering her craft. When she first appeared on the big screen, in a dream debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007, much was written about how luck was on Deepika’s side. What many people didn’t realise at that time was that ‘Om Shanti Om’ was not just the film gods smiling at Deepika, but the result of many years of struggle. Much like Kangana, Deepika too, left her family home in Bangalore to pursue her acting aspirations. She had to make do

with modelling for a few years before she was noticed and cast in her first film. With the success of Om Shanti Om, expectations grew. The next couple of years were a mixed bag. Directors like Imtiaz Ali put their trust in Deepika with ‘Love Aaj Kal’ but commercial success eluded her. Films like ‘Break ke Baad’ and ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ tanked at the box office and Deepika was close to being written off. 2012 brought her ‘Cocktail’, the film which finally made people sit up and take notice, and since then there has been no looking back. In the following years, she has taken up challenging roles such as Mastani in ‘Bajirao Mastani’

Along with all this, Deepika has also been one of the few stars to openly talk about highly taboo topics like depression. Her foundation, Live Love Laugh, which was launched last year is devoted to discussing depression and spreading awareness of the condition. She has broken the conventional Hindi film heroine mould and openly spoken about her own struggles in coping with depression. She has also starred in a pro-choice video produced by Vogue India, which encourages women to be independent and confident of what they want from themselves and those around them. success without a proverbial godfather in the industry, and have kept bringing something fresh to the table is Priyanka Chopra. Chopra hails from an Army medical background, one that required her to move from city to city, with her family. It was when she moved to the US to live with her aunt that she discovered her love for acting and theatre. Those years in the US exposed her to a whole new world but also made Priyanka extremely self-critical. In one of her interviews Priyanka described them as a tough phase: ‘I was a gawky kid, had low self-esteem, came from a modest middleclass background, had white marks on my legs... But I was damn hard working. Today, my legs sell 12 brands.’

Upon returning to India, at her mother’s insistence she decided to try out for Miss India. Not only did she win the title, she went on to be crowned Miss World for the year 2000. Bollywood came calling soon afterwards and she played a stream of glamorous roles that had her playing not much more than a glamorous second fiddle to the hero. It was her hard work that kept her going in these years of struggle until she landed the role of Meghna Mathur in ‘Fashion’ in 2008. Critics were forced to acknowledge her breakthrough performance. Priyanka now had the privilege of choosing roles that allowed her to explore different facets of her acting. From Kaminey to Barfi, she has delivered some outstanding performances. Barring a few rough patches, Priyanka has really risen

to become one of India’s best known and most beloved stars. From launching her singing career and churning out some hit numbers, to playing the lead role in the US TV series Quantico, Priyanka is officially going places. And now it has been officially announced that Priyanka will be playing a villainous role in the new Baywatch movie reboot opposite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and

Zac Efron. Priyanka will also presenting at the Oscars, this year as India’s sole representative there. Kangana, Deepika and Priyanka are proof that talent and hard work always pays off eventually. They now serve as key inspiration not just to aspiring female actors, but also to men who wish to enter the film industry but do not have a godfather or insider to rely on!

Ask Ayesha Ever wondered about how to carry off the latest beauty trend of the season? Or what products to use to make those dark circles disappear? Well, help is finally here. Send in your queries to our resident hair and makeup specialist Ayesha Babar at Ayesha@ asianstylemagazine.com, and we will get you your answers!

I am a 19year old and really want to start trying out brighter lipsticks. So far I only wear gloss in very light colours. Since I have darker skin I am not sure what bright colours will suit me. Can you please help? (Tia K, Bradford)

A

Ayesha Says: Hi Tia – A bright lip colour, if done well, can really take a look from ordinary to standout. When wearing a bright colour, there are a couple of things

that you need to keep in mind. If you have not worn bright colours before I would suggest starting off with a hot pink or coral shade. This might help you ease into the look and these shades are also

more forgiving in terms of lining and shaping the lips. When buying, look for colours with a warm or neutral undertone to complement your skin tone. And finally, confidence is key. Whatever lip colour you wear, wear it with a smile!

I have been wearing mascara ever since I can remember. However, recently I have noticed that every time I wash it off, I lose a couple of lashes and the rest of them look brittle. I cannot imagine life without mascara – please help! (Tanushree Singh, London)

Ayesha Says: Dear Tanushree – As with any product that we use, it is important to give our skin and hair a break occasionally and also to take care of our bodies from within. The weaker lashes might be due to an inadequate diet. Remember that lashes, just like the hair on our head, need proper nutrition to be healthy. I would recommend you start by making sure that you are having a balanced diet with fruits and leafy green vegetables.

Using the tiniest bit of argan or olive oil on your lashes has also proven to be helpful to some. As part of your bedtime skincare, you can massage the oil between two fingers and then give a gentle coat to your lashes. You do have to make sure that you are using a very small quantity. If you are not comfortable using oil, you can also get lash serums from skincare brands such as Clinique and Lancome that strengthen lashes over time.

The Meera Sonal combination oozes passion, creative vision and professionalism. We are delighted to introduce them to you as

How To Create An ‘Award-Winning’

Wedding Reception

It would seem that the season of glitz and glamour is officially upon us. With the Grammys and BAFTAs not long gone, and the Oscars just around the corner, there is literally no escaping it all. Now, we know you’re probably not marrying Leonardo DiCaprio but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your very own celebrity-style moment in the spotlight. Styling your wedding reception can be a daunting

task - there are so many decisions to be made, after all. If you do too much it could offset your guests from the start, but if you do too little, they may not get it at all. Finding the right balance can be tricky but it’s our job to ensure you get it absolutely perfect and that you take away the winning trophy on the night. Here’s presenting our top tips on planning your Oscar-inspired reception. Your venue is one of the most important elements of your event. Opt for a building with a grand entrance to stun your guests as they arrive. Whether it’s a stately home or a historical site, make sure it oozes character. Try and avoid locations that are overcrowded or industrial-like.

RED CARPET

You can’t have your own awards ceremony without the all-important red carpet. Roll this out for your guests and make them feel special with their very own private paparazzi and dazzling camera lights (yes, you can really hire people to do this!) as they enter the venue. Better yet, why not impress them with a signed Polaroid snap of their celebrity-moment entrance to take home?

IT’S A WRAP

There’s no party like an after party! If you really want to go all out and impress then consider treating your nearest and dearest to a private post-event bash. This will be for those select few who you probably want to say thanks to and for those who can manage to stay away post midnight. Have a few glasses of champers (or cups of coffee if you prefer) and some comforting midnight snacks. Wind down together, and share your favourite memories of the night gone by.

STAGE SETTING

To keep your award theme flowing throughout the evening, work with your DJ and audio visual team to get the staging and lighting perfect. Set up a podium for all announcements and speeches and personalise the music for when the person in question makes their way to the stage. You can even go one step further by having a live camera stream so all of your guests can get the true Filmfare experience.

STATIONERY

FAVOURS

You should ensure that your stationery blends in seamlessly with the rest of you glamorous décor. Keep it simple and elegant with blacks and whites and finish off with gold foiling to make a lasting impression. Include a seating plan, place cards and menus for each table. Instead of standard numbered tables, name each table after your favourite A-lister, whether it’s an award-winning director, actor or writer.

Your guests will have travelled from far and wide to celebrate your special day with you, so it’s always nice to give a little something back to say thank you for all their love and support. In true Oscar style why not award all your guests with a personalised, individual trophy to take home, which will sit proudly on their mantelpiece.

Serve a three-course menu to your guests with silver service fit for the royal family. Request that catering company provide staff dressed immaculately in black and white attire. When it comes to the actual food, you can get as creative as you like! Keep the champagne flowing but go the extra mile and design a selection of signature cocktails (or mocktails) named after your favourite awards or films.

Poets Corner Sarojini Naidu Known commonly as ‘The Nightingale of India’, Sarojini Naidu was an Indian political activist, poet and writer. Naidu served as the first governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh; the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state. She was the second woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and the first Indian woman to do so. Naidu was a strong and independent woman who broke down barriers in all areas of her life. Born in 1879, she was a dedicated feminist and devoted mother to five children, whilst juggling her thriving writing career alongside a rising political one. She first began

writing at the age of 12, and continued to delight and impress others right up until after her death, when her final collection of poems ‘The Feather of Dawn’ was published posthumously by her daughter. So revered is she across India that her birthday, 13th February, is celebrated as ‘National Women’s Day’ in the country in honour of the works done by her for the development of women’s rights in India. We think that Sarojini Naidu really embodies the type of inspirational and influential woman that we are celebrating this issue, and we hope her poetry manages to touch your heart as it has so many before.
