I am more of a television personality now: Karan Johar
Priyanka Chopra’s ‘Baywatch’ release date pushed Filmmaker Karan Johar has started considering himself more of a television personality now, thanks to his stint on the small screen. The “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” helmer, who is all set to judge singing show “Dil Hai Hindustani”, said: “I don’t think there is anything left on television that I didn’t do. From judging a dancing show, hosting a show to now judging a singing show, I’ve covered it all. “I am more of a television personality now and films seem to be an incidental part of my personality.” The 44-year-old was speaking at the press conference of Star Plus’s new show recently. The “Kapoor and Sons” producer who has served as a judge on the reality shows “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” and “India’s Got Talent” added: “Wherever I go, people ask me more about talent shows or the talk show and it’s very embarrassing. Sometimes, I have to tell them I am a filmmaker and a producer too.” Karan however feels that the impact of the small screen is huge. “I think the impact of television is huge. It is important to know for us that three percent people of our country watch films whereas 25 percent people watch television. It’s nine times more impactful,” he said.

She first hit our screens with Yash Raj Films, Shuddh Desi Romance and was lauded for her role winning the Filmfare and IIFA awards for best female debut. Vaani has now landed the role of a lifetime as the leading lady in none other than an Aditya Chopra directed film. We managed to catch up with the stunning actress during her visit to the UK. During a relaxing photo shoot the YRF talent answered our questions with much humour and articulation
You made your Hindi film debut playing second lead in Shuddh Desi Romance and now you’re playing the lead role in Befikre. Do you feel there is more pressure on you playing the lead, that too as a YRF heroine? I have always felt the pressure, there is a lot of pressure that I have built for myself. There was a lot of pressure for Shuddh Desi and there is a lot of pressure now as well, so it’s not like for my debut movie there is less pressure than now. I think the pressure that I build for myself is always going to be there, which I think is a good thing because it will always keep me on my toes and work in my favour, because I will work harder for it. So, that’s the only pressure I worry about, the pressure I build for myself.
11
How does that make you feel? I feel special and it’s a big thing for me. It’s a huge thing that has happened to me. I know that I am very new and there are a lot of other things that might happen to me, but this will always be special to me. He (Aditya Chopra) tops my wish list as a director and it makes me feel special What is it like being directed by Aditya Chopra?
He is very clear in his vision. He is very clear in what he wants out of his characters. There was never any room for doubt because he would be more than happy to answer or repeat his brief as and when required. And I never felt silly asking him the most random things, about the character, the script or any You’re being directed by Aditya scene because he was only too happy to Chopra, an opportunity that even the explain over and over again. me discussing it again or if he is going to judge me for asking him something very silly or minute. On set he is very efficient, very impatient, he doesn’t like to waste any time. He expects his talent to be all ready, with the lines, with the character, with the scene. He is very organic as a director. I love the fact that I got this one opportunity to work and learn so much from him, because you won’t understand the level of learning just working under his production, unless you work under him, under his direction, with that proximity where you see that man’s passion that he puts in his heart and soul in to his films and that’s quiet inspiring for me as an actor. There’s a lot of kissing in the trailer
of Befikre. Do you think Indian audiences are ready for these scenes? Especially the diaspora audiences living away, families tend to watch Hindi films here in the UK, because they know they don’t have to look away when a kissing scene or nude scene comes on and can be comfortable watching films with their family. You might find that funny but yes Indian people still have that notion. In fact, it’s very funny we were just having this discussion when I was travelling in London. I was talking to someone who is born and brought up there and I was just discussing the very same thing that if this is true and that if people there feel like this,
when watching a kissing scene or any such scene on screen especially in an Indian movie, to which she said there are a lot of people evolving and now the generation is such that they’re open to it. Plus, the fact that they are so used to watching Hollywood movies that it should not come as a shocker to them when they watch a ‘kissing’ scene in a Bollywood movie. I think it’s a myth, it’s not really that often that people will get offended with a kissing scene. But also in Befikre the kissing scenes are shot with so much love and warmth that you will never get offended. It’s shot so aesthetically and when you watch those scenes for what it is, in the parameters of the context you will never get offended

You and Ranveer seem very comfortable with each other. Did he ever make you feel that he was the bigger star and you the newcomer? No, he never did that, he was very supportive, as an actor, as a co-actor and he really did look after me. He is quite caring and is actually a great soul. His energy is quite infectious so I never really felt like I was the newcomer. I really have to give credit to Ranveer and Adi both for making me feel an equal and not any less than them. What is the most Befikre (carefree) thing you have done in your life? I have taken a trip to New York alone.

sense and we both respect each other and care for each other and he is a great co-actor.
You have said in an interview that you were at the receiving end of Ranveer’s pranks. Are there any incidents you can describe where Ranveer totally embarrassed you?
You’re look in the film is very different to the usual YRF heroines. We haven’t seen you in any chiffon saris for example. So, from DDLJ to Befikre the journey seems to be a move from Indian culture to western presentation.
I mean yes, he (Ranveer) is obsessed with human faeces, but I take it in a good stride. We both have a really good love hate relationship, where I love him and he hates me at times and then he pulls these pranks on me and I start getting mad at him, but it’s all in good humour and good
I have taken a trip to New York alone. That’s not the most Befikre thing people usually do in life, but for me it was the most carefree thing.
Well, the movie is set in Paris, so one cannot expect Shyra to be dressed in chiffon saris on the streets of Paris. So, it was only obvious we had to stick to the storyline and be honest to it and be more logical about it
14
ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE December 2016
Do you think somewhere we are moving on from our conventional stories and values or is this just a reflection of the times? I do believe it is a reflection of the time. I don’t think as these two characters that have been played by me and Ranveer (Dharam and Shyra) that just because they are light hearted doesn’t mean that they are obnoxious, they don’t have values, they don’t have substance. But sure, it is a story about this couple who are very modern, contemporary and it’s a reflection of how today’s youth is. So, today’s generation will only be able to relate to something like this because I don’t feel that if a Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayenge was made again people will be able to relate to that with today’s times. So yes, I agree it is a reflection of today’s times. What have been your main highlights whilst filming Befikre? My main highlights are the fun we have had in Paris. It was amazing. Adi and Ranveer were like the biggest strengths and the biggest assets to me in the movie. This is just a dream come true for me, to be part of such a film. Paris is such a huge highlight, we were given our own individual apartments, quite luxurious and we were right on Champs-Élyséesstreet. The crew also made a huge difference, a big impact and played a huge role to make the film more unique and energetic and gave the film a fresher and newer energy. The entire process of shooting every single day went so well and I was so happy and surrounded by only good happy people. So, every single day of the shooting is like a highlight in my life. What’s next for Vaani after Befikre? Vaani is wondering herself. Finally, why should people go watch Befikre? Go so you can get entertained, you can feel happy you can relax. It’s December time, it’s Christmas time, it’s New Years’ time, it’s a month of celebrations. The movie is not being revealed by the trailer. The trailer is only at surface level, which
has intentionally been done by the director himself. I feel the movie is extremely sweet and happy. It’s a
really refreshing romantic comedy, so just feel light and enjoy the film. Thank you.

You’ll be surprised at how some of our B-Town hotties looked when they first came on to our screens. This edition we take a look at how some of our much loved stars have changed their looks from when they came into to the industry to present day.
Now
Kareena Kapoor Khan Kareena Kapoor Khan, hit our screens in 2000 as the sister of Karisma Kapoor. There were naturally many comparisons. Kareena was on the plumper side when she came into the industry and her weight did not do her any favours. This coupled with over the top makeup and a dysfunctional wardrobe left Bebo looking rather gaudy. It wasn’t until successful films like Jab We Met came along and the transformation in films such as Kambakht Ishq and Heroine that Kareena Kapoor Khan the sexy talented super star was born.
Then
Now
Katrina Kaif Katrina Kaif first hit our screens in 2003 in the flop film Boom, where she appeared in the film with tanned skin, loud makeup and a very unflattering wardrobe. The only saving grace was her lovely long hair. Today Katrina regularly works out which is visible in her stunning acrobatics in Dhoom 3, not only that she seems to have mastered the simplicity of makeup and rid herself of the horrible tan, simple soft tones and a wardrobe to suit, has made many go crazy over the Kaif girl today.

Shetty was never confident about her looks in the early 90’s, especially as she stood taller than most of her heroes. It wasn’t until Dharkan released in 2000 that gave Shetty a new lease of life. Her new slim and trim figure and new nose, gave Shetty the confidence to focus on her look and make her the entrepreneurial sexy diva she is today.

Then
Priyanka Chopra is probably one of today’s hottest Bollywood stars. She made her first appearance in the Bollywood film Andaaz, where she shared the female lead with Lara Dutta. Chopra was already riding high from her Miss World win and so going into films was only a natural progression. In the 90’s it is believed actress were at the sole mercy of their makeup teams and didn’t have much choice on their look for the role they would play.
Now
Kajol devgn Kajol, has always maintained she doesn’t like makeup in her interviews. Her very first film Bekhudi proved that this woman could not be tamed. She preferred her oh so natural unshaped eyebrows and makeup free face. Nevertheless, as success came her way, Kajol too took to the attraction of presenting her beautiful eyes with a deep protection of eye liner and nude yet complimentary shade of lipstick. She looked stunning in films like Fanaa and the more recent Dilwale.
Whilst Lara still looks the same, from Andaaz to today, Priyanka certainly not only transformed in the sense of complexion, but also had a major style change. We’re loving the new kick ass slim trim and sexy look of Priyanka today.
Kangana ranaut Whilst almost all of B-Town divas were sporting straight long hair, along came Kangana in Gangster with her unconventional curly locks, and pale skin complexion. Lucky for Kangana her acting prowess got her noticed. Thankfully today, Kangana has a more chiselled jaw line, and has a much better stylist.

2015 was a great year for him, as he bagged all the best actor awards for his role as Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani. Ace director Aditya Chopra has called him the next Shahrukh Khan, whilst Sanjay Leela Bhansali has continued showing his faith in him by signing him up for his next mega film. He is most definitely the current favourite of the Bollywood film industry and we were fortunate to catch up with him during his visit to Bradford, UK.We met up with the infectiously happy and dashingly handsome Ranveer Singh, to talk films, kissing scenes and how does he feel about being Anil Kapoor’s love interest. How did it feel when ace Director Aditya Chopra, came to you with Befikre and chose to direct you himself? It was actually such a big piece of news for me that I didn’t actually embrace it, accept it, or think that it was going to happen, except that this was actually going to happen, until it was actually officialised because there are many instances in my life where many big things happen and then somehow the
other day they fall apart and they don’t happen and you face a great deal of disappointment and that doesn’t feel good at all. So, I wasn’t going to immediately celebrate or anything till such time that I knew it was absolutely official. But it happened almost in the exact same fashion as the time he (Aditya Chopra) told me I was going to do Baand Baaja Baraat. He calls me up to his office. The great big Yash Raj Studio facility and he sits on the great big fourth floor. If you are called to the fourth floor to meet Mr Aditya Chopra. It’s something super important. So, when I got selected for Baand Baaja Baraat he called me to his office and I was sat across the couch and he told me(I showed no emotion even as a rank newcomer, picked up from nowhere) you’re going to be Yash Raj’s first solo hero ever about to be launched. It was a massive massive deal for me. You have a very unique and quirky style statement. Do you ever influence this into any of your characters you play in the movies? Not at all, actually. There are two directors who have
actually had a great influence on me. Two cinematic minds, one is Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the other is Aditya Chopra. What I have learnt from them is that everybody has a job to do on a film. It’s team work, it’s a collaborative effort. I am the emotions guy. I am the guy who brings emotions and infuses them into characters, brings characters to life with mannerisms and with all the human nuances and stuff like that. So, the director is the captain of the ship. Every department has the work that they do and they do it better than anyone else and that’s why they are doing it. So, I give the costume designer their space. I am one of those actors who doesn’t really get involved on the look. I trust that they’ve been brought in for a reason. They are the experts of that department and so I give them their space. I allow myself to be more led entirely (look wise) by whoever’s responsibility it is to design that look. Of course, if my input is asked for then I will definitely offer it. But I am the kind of guy who gives the costume designer a lot of space.

So, from all the films you have done, which characters’ style have you loved the most? None! None? Yes, I don’t like any of them (laughter) I really don’t, but if I had to answer your question I would say, Ram from Ram Leela. I like the beard and I like the long hair. This is Vaani’s first lead film. How do you think she has done in the film? She was extremely nervous to begin with and with good reason she has waited a long time to do another film and it paid off because it’s a great part, with a really great director in a really great film. So, I think her gamble paid off to begin with, but of course the nerves were kind of getting to her. She was extremely nervous on the first day. On the day before it was going to be the first day as well, she was hyperventilating I’ll never forget, we were at headquarters in Paris and she was a bag of nerves. But Adi sir’s master stroke was to begin with the songs. He was
supposed to start with the talky scene and he said at the very last minute no I want to start with the song because he knew that Vaani was well rehearsed for the song and that she would absolutely kill it. And that song was ‘nashe si chad gayi’. Once we did the song, she gained so much confidence from that. So, it’s amazing how a director can improvise on a schedule on a scene and give the actor what they need to be able to perform. After she did that song, which took us three days to do, but after she had done it, she was just flowing. When you’re so nervous and new, you need that, and this was me back in the day, that you rely on the validation from the people around you and that gives you self-confidence and then you’re able to do what you can do, but are probably just too nervous. So, once we did that song after the first week of whatever we shot, Adi sir showed us the material and he said: ‘I want you to see this’ which is very unexpected of him, because he is very guarded about his material. However, he showed it to us and that’s when she realised that ok this is working and that gave her another boost of self-confidence and she has absolutely nailed
the part. The way she went about her physicality, her dance, her accent and her French, she was so immersed in the character that she has absolutely nailed it. She tells us you played a lot of pranks on her. Is that true? Yes, I did. Not really pranks but I would trash talk and bully her and make her miserable, rile her up because I could you know. I used to be a bully in school and so here’s my opportunity many years later. I can’t articulate why, but I feel extremely protective about her and I am the only one who I will allow to bully her. Anyone else says anything to her, I will take them down. Tell us something ‘Befikre’ that you’ve done? I have done a lot of stuff. (laughs). I used to be quite the nutter back in the day before growing up, I’ve been a pretty pretty Befikre kind of guy. So, the film is definitely very apt to you? Yes We interviewed Mr Anil Kapoor around a month ago, and we asked him the question…

(Ranveer at this point makes Anil Kapoor impersonations) We asked Anil that if you got the opportunity to play a gay character who would you like as your love interest. Anil chose you. What are your thoughts on that? Wow, that’s amazing. That’s testament to his love and affection for me and his comfort level with me. As a co-actor, we had a brilliant time with each other. I would rate him as one of the best co-actor experiences I have ever had. The kind of passion that the man has for the craft is matchless. He puts even the young and new actors to shame. The kind of vigour and passion with which he goes about his work is stunning. He and I got along like a house on fire from the get go. I am so happy that I got a chance to work with him because he is one of my screen idols. The Befikre trailer shows a lot
of kissing in the film. Here in the UK it is felt that British Asians watch Bollywood films mainly due to their family centric content. Now with kissing scenes, intimate scenes do you think a certain section of the British Asian audience might shy away from coming to watch Befikre? I would like to tell all the British Asian audiences that we have actually got a UA from the censor board, which is testament in itself. It’s a family film. It really is. It is very simple hearted love story. Genuine romantic comedy, one that you don’t get to see too often. Usually in Hindi romantic films, by the third act you know they are going to get a bit emotional, which then it’s not a romantic comedy no more. It becomes a love story, but here you have a genuine romantic comedy after a long time. Adi sir wanted to shake up the genre. He said nobody is doing anything
within this genre, which is my favourite genre. I love ‘When Harry met Sally’. I love ‘Love Actually’ and he wanted to make something in this genre because nobody else was. He was like I have to do it. Well, we are in Bradford, so if you were to give a message to all the Bradford audience about Befikre, what would it be? To all the Bradfordians, we’ve come a long way to give this message to you, about our dear film Befikre. It’s a happy film so please bring all your loved ones your friends, your family and come watch our film December 9th. I promise you entertainment and endearment. And this guy Aditya Chopra is an ace director, he doesn’t direct too often but he is a fabulous director and I think he has made a film that our team is very very proud of and we would love for you all to come and watch it.

It’s been close to five years since the release of Kahaani, which enthralled audiences and became a smash hit at the box office. The winning team of Sujoy Ghosh and Vidya Balan are back again in Kahaani 2, this time with Arjun Rampal also in a lead role. So, does Kahaani 2 match up to Kahaani? Here’s our review Cast: Vidya Balan, Arjun Rampal, Tunisha Sharma, Jugal Hansraj, Kharaj Mukherjee Director: Sujoy Ghosh Rating: (2.5/5)

This lowermiddle class family has Vidya striving hard to save money, saving the rickshaw fare to the station and continuing with a ‘dabba’ phone, while Minni keeps reminding her mother to not be ‘kanjoos’. Vidya leaves for office one fine morning and comes back to find Minni missing. A stray call on her phone asks her to come to a certain place if she wants to see her daughter alive. On the way, she met with an accident. Storyline: Durga Rani Singh, the sequel is the story of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) and her daughter Minni (Tunisha Sharma), who live in Chandan Nagar. While Vidya slips into a coma, sub-inspector Inderjit Singh (Arjun Rampal) gets the case. At the Chandan Nagar police station, Inder’s senior, Pranab Haldar (Kharaj Mukherjee), tells him that they are looking for a woman called Durga Rani Singh, wanted for kidnapping and murder. Except, Durga Rani Singh is the spitting image of Vidya Sinha. A gripping storyline, with a great star cast. The only issue in our view is that if you’ve seen Kahaani, then the twists in Kahaani 2 will become predictable and you may leave feeling slightly disappointed, especially as Kahaani gave us big expectations for Kahaani 2. Nevertheless, the film is still an enjoyable watch (more so, for those who haven’t seen Kahaani). The plus points of the film are the characters, Vidya the mother or Durga the murderer are both believable and solid characters. As

What also works in the films favour is the authentic shots of Kalimpong. The camera work is good and you will definitely fall in love with the rustic and authentic feel of the film.
Unravelling the twists is not a difficult task at all and after almost five years the film makers need to have grown with audience expectations, and this is where they fail.

TOP BRIDAL TRENDS FROM INDIA COUTURE WEEK 2016
If you are a bride-to-be, looking for the most perfect outfit for her big day, then you are in one of the luckiest bridal seasons. This season’s bride has an array of options available to her and the best part is that if you can carry it well, then you can wear it! Fortunately for today’s bride-to-be, bridal dresses are no longer limited to a certain colour palette or cut. We bring to you India’s top bridal collections from the recent India Couture Week 2016 and what the designers think you should be dressed in on your big day.
TarunTahiliani, a hot favourite when it comes to brides, decided against heavy bridal outfits. His collection, titled ‘The Last Dance of the Courtesan’ evoked an old world charm but the underlining feeling of the collection was one of lightness – both in terms of fabrics used as well as the colours. Tarun emphasised on making the clothes more wearable and practical. ‘The modern woman wants something that is wearable and an outfit that she can use again too either as one whole ensemble or even as separates. The trend is finally shifting from having an outfit that is so heavy that the bride would never be able to repeat it again. And with the kind of money people are spending on bridal outfits, I think every bride should think about this wearability aspect’. We saw newer embellishments too in Tarun’s collection as the designer officially partnered with Swarovski and added lots of crystal work in his clothes that adds sparkle without weighing down the garment.

Another designer who has similar ideas for brides is Rahul Mishra as he presented bridals in fresh colours, moving away from darker hues. The designer whose collections are a hot favourite internationally, especially after a very successful show in Paris recently, believes that it is finally time for the desi bride to wear pastels. In his collection ‘The Monsoon Diaries’, Rahul presented clothes inspired by shades of nature. With motifs including vintage botanical illustrations appliqued onto lehengas, he let the design take centre stage. In terms of colours, the focus was kept on pastels and lighter shades including powder blues, fresh mints, soft pinks and even whites. ‘Each outfit tells a story. I have designed each piece around a motif and design and I hope people appreciate this collection as something different’, Rahul explained. There was widespread acclaim for Rahul’s designs as fashion powerhouses like Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar and Anju Modi made it a point to attend the designer’s show.
There were still enough designers, however, who were more traditional in their choices. The King of drama and couture in India, Manish Malhotra, is a firm believer of traditional colours such as red and gold when it comes to bridal lehengas. Where the bride can shine and stand out is the cut according to the design ace. In his latest couture collection ‘A Persian Story’ where he had the dashing Fawad Khan and the stunning DeepikaPadukone walk for him as the showstoppers, Manish experimented with various cuts for the silhouettes. The one trend that struck us was the drop shoulder blouse, as was seen on Deepika herself. The lehengas remained opulent in terms of volume and embellishment but that’s hardly a surprise given the designer’s love for cinema and grandeur. In terms of the dupattas, the designer experimented with both light chunris as well as heavily worked upon styles.

RohitBal, a favourite with Bollywood’s crème de la crème including Kareena Kapoor, followed suit. He presented a Russian heritage inspired collection titled ‘Kehkashaan’ which means ‘galaxy’. ‘I was in Russia recently for a holiday and what I saw there left me awestruck. The rich colours and fabrics that have been used in Russian culture are so similar to our desi tastes and yet remain unexplored. I wish I had been exposed to that world before!’, exclaimed Rohit. In his show, which was aptly described by an attendee as ‘what happens when a Russian tsarina meets a Mughal prince’, Rohit showcased jewel toned hues and focussed on stone and shell work. The colours were darker and the liberal use of brocade and velvet made the collection ideal for a winter bride.

When KanganaRanaut walks for a designer, it is difficult to keep the spotlight on the clothes and designs but ManavGangwani managed the feat and how! Kangana may have been the showstopper for Manav’s ‘Begum-e-Jannat’ collection, but the focus remained on the designer’s aesthetics. Working with conventional colours like deep reds and navy, the designer presented all sorts of cuts for the modern day bride. The designer turned to his Kashmiri roots for inspiration for the embroidery and embellishment and presented a collection that audiences couldn’t stop gushing about. So if you are a bride, go on and wear whatever takes your fancy. As always remember to select colours and cuts that suit you and flatter your physiquebut most importantly, remember to have fun!

THE LAND OF CULTURE, HERITAGE AND OPPORTUNITY
China is a fascinating country with hundreds of places to visit, depending on your interests. If you have some travel preferences, such as history and food, or small villages and rural culture, or worldclass landscapes and national parks, on your itinerary then you’re in luck, because this is the country that has it all.

There is so much to do in China, from pastels of ponds in Jiuzhaigou National the majesty of mountain peaks and pale Park to the bustling city of Beijing. We took a 15day tour package, which covered Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin, Longsheng, Suzhou, Tongli, Shanghai I was keen to explore all the usual tourist places, such as walking along the Great Wall; tour the mystic Forbidden City; discover the old, narrow streets of Beijing to mingling with the locals and exploring the old ancient Chinese culture. If you love city travelling, you will love the rickshaw ride along the narrow streets of Beijing. Reminds me a little of Pakistan, manoeuvring around tight spaces. There are endless treasures to unfold in China’s proud capital city and you can clearly see technology is at the heart of the city’s growth and structure.

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE December 2016
If the hustle bustle of the streets in Beijing don’t get you then the serenity of walking along the Great Wall will most certainly leave you breathless. I loved spending time there. It’s an awesome place and very convenient to get there from Beijing. Take a train from Beijing north railway station and you will arrive in an hour. Costs 15rmb, around £1.60. This place definitely deserves at least half a day. You do need to go prepared with lots of warm clothing and a hat or scarf to keep your ears protected from the wind. Beware some parts are very steep and so the more you go the weather does get to you, so be prepared. Our next journey was on to Xian in central China. Here the stunning temples and the marvellous 6,000 life-sized warriors in the Terracotta Legion, just put you in awe of the amazing rich heritage that China boasts. I enjoyed the stage show which is performed in memory of the great Tang Dynasty as we went to visit the Wild Goose Pagoda, truly mesmerising architecture. I must say my highlight of the trip was in Shanghai, where we went to the Shanghai world circus. I am not much of a circus fan and the last time I went was when I
was 7, which was far too many decades ago for me to disclose on here. Anyway, we met up with a friend who was a local there and he highly recommended it. Apparently tickets are difficult to get, but he managed to get us a couple of reservations, which cost us 300 rmb (around £30) The £30 was most definitely well spent, as the circus acts were truly spectacular, from the acrobatics, to the motorcycles, although bit creeped up with the snake performance, but if you’re into that kind of thing you will love it. On the whole, China has so much to offer, from food to shopping to culture to sight-seeing and if you have an eye for business, it’s a great land of opportunities. Visitors are advised to always carry changes of clothing due to the large variations in temperature between day and night. The climate is relatively dry, so drinking more water, protecting oneself from strong UV radiation at high altitude, and protecting oneself from altitude sickness are all recommended. To lessen the effects of altitude sickness, avoid strenuous exercise and have plenty of rest. September and October are normally the best months to visit China.

Luxury Living in Bradford
If someone asked you what was the City Living scene like in Bradford? What would thoughts would go through your mind? Well, for those of you who have a negative view, you need to look around and look at present day Bradford. The city that once had a big hole, is now a vibrant district full of hustle and bustle. Bradford has certainly moved on from a decade ago and with the current and very evident developments in the city centre of Bradford, it seems investor confidence is growing in the city. One such industry that is certainly seeing the benefits of
investing in Bradford is the 'Apartment market' One of Bradford's leading property management company's Acedia properties told us that the apartment market was on the up in Bradford and investors were not shying away from building decent luxury apartments for both students and professionals.
There are over 100 luxury apartments with prices starting from ÂŁ550 - ÂŁ700 for a two bedroom apartment.
Acedia Properties Managing Director, Shoheb Ahmed took us on an exclusive guided tour on one of thier most recent developments, Empire House and boy were we impressed?
Empire House is probably one of the most luxurious developments we have seen in Bradford . It has a stunning marble lobby, free onsite gym, 24/7 on-site concierge service, parking, large passenger lift, its position close to Foster Sq train station, its proximity to the Broadway shopping centre and all this even before you've open the door to some of the most spacious apartments Bradford has to offer.
Empire House is part of the Mill Street development in Bradford by MMR Construction and is managed by Acedia Properties.
one of the apartments we viewed was a one bed apartment which was absolutely gorgeous, with its exposed brickwork and corner
position overlooking the Broadway Shopping centre, It also boasts 742 sqft of luxury living area, which contains a stunning lounge, fitted with a flat screen TV, a fully fitted modern kitchen, including a separate fridge and freezer, as well as a washer/dryer, a hotel style bathroom, and a spacious double bedroom with fully fitted wardrobes and another flat screen TV. The apartment benefits from two flat screen TVs, with built in freeview, with the option of adding Virgin Multi Media too. We were certainly impressed and we're sure the picture gallery will prove this too. So if you're thinking of luxury city living Bradford most certainly can be your answer.

by MOHAMMED RASUL
This edition we once again welcome the expert help of interior expert and owner of the much admired store Artz-i. Artz-i is a stylish new lifestyle and gift store which designs, manufactures and retails modern and traditional high quality gifts, artworks and other fine products, including hand crafted items. Their merchandise includes ceramic tiles, calligraphy, brass and copper ornaments, appliquĂŠ art, paintings, photography and wood carvings as well as gift cards, contemporary and classical household furnishings. The team have a sharp eye for modern and traditional hand crafts from the world, including the edgy retro designs which they have shared with us this week. Think bare floorboards, metal signs, quirky lighting and high-ceilinged New York loft apartments. Owner Mohammed Rasul shows us exactly how you can pull off this colourful mix of retro and modern styles with an industrial twist in your own living space.
Combine traditional British imagery and retro pieces such as these faded trunk-style drawers, with an unusual industrial touch such as this striking oversized wall clock. Guaranteed to draw eyes in any room, little touches such as vintage bottles and knick-knack trays really complete the look.
If you aren’t afraid of making a big and bold statement, wall or standing artwork in a retro industrial style is perfect for adding interest to any home. Fun signs such as these would look great in a teenage bedroom or casual recreation room, whilst the beautiful yet understated cabinets will jazz up your sitting room or dining area no end.

One area of the home which really works well with this style is the home office. Using a mixture of masculine, earthy colours and brass metallic items gives a homely and welcoming feel to the room and warms up a style which can sometimes be considered a bit cool and unfriendly. Don’t be afraid to add in more unusual items for decorative purposes than you would typically consider, such as vintage cameras, old books or these quirky miniature ‘hat-stands’!
Lights...Camera...Action! A vintage lamp on tripod legs such as this just oozes professional industrial glamour, as well as brightening up any dark corners. Pair with concrete and bare wood textures along with oversized metal pieces such as this clock for a very modern and industrialized ambience.
If you enjoyed the retro industrial pieces here and want to see more amazing designs, check out www.artz-i.com

I recently got a facial polisher done while I was on holiday in Delhi hoping for freshness and a natural glow but I was extremely upset to see the results. Even though I got it done from the salon at the hotel I was staying at and it was apparently one of the top salons of the city, I think that the products that the beautician used on my face have made my skin visibly rough. What can I do to fix my skin? (NainaBheda, Leeds)

skin especially is not only subjected to all kinds of external elements but due to its own very sensitive nature, it must be treated with extra care. The sensitivity of our skin also depends on the environment that it is used to. Just as you wouldn’t experiment with too many different kinds of food while on holiday, I would suggest taking a cautious
The first thing I would ask you to do is to avoid putting on foundation on your face as much as you can over the next few days. Your skin is irritated right now and needs rest. Use a soothing cream twice a day. Even something from the drugstore (such as E45 cream) is usually quite effective.
approach to beauty. The products that the beautician used might have been too harsh for your skin, while it could have been totally fine for tougher, local skin.
Before you go to bed, apply a mixture of glycerine and rose water to your face and keep it on all night. Following this routine for at least a week will return the natural moisture and nutrients to your skin that the harsh chemicals have stripped away and should make your skin soft and smooth again.

Dear Ayesha,
I have been shaving my arms and legs since as long as I can remember and even though most doctors say that it has no impact on hair growth, I feel like my hair always grows back thicker and that over the years the follicles have become much thicker to the extent that now I never really get a smooth look for more than 2 – 3 days before I have to shave again. In the winters it is still okay when I can wear longer sleeves but in the summer it becomes difficult to manage. (Amna B, London) Ayesha Says: Dear Amna, While doctors do say that shaving should not have any impact on hair growth, I have seen in my own experience and in the experience of others that constant shaving does make the hair coarser in texture. This is especially true for the forearms and legs as I have found that the hair on these areas is shaved most frequently especially in the summer.
A
I am not sure if you have tried waxing before; I feel that it is a longer lasting form of epilation in most cases. The results from waxing tend to last for a few weeks as compared to shaving and over time the hair texture becomes finer. As with anything to do with the skin, it is important to be gentle which means not going over the same area again and again to pull out the tougher hair as that can burn the skin. If you would like to stick to shaving instead, I would suggest that you start using a female shaving cream (there are lots available from Boots, Superdrug etc) and to try and shave in the shower. This will give you a closer shave while making the hair softer and will also protect your skin.
Dear Ayesha,
I have recently started applying kohl in my waterline but after a few hours it starts spreading with the result that it looks like I have dark circles so that instead of looking intense, my eyes just look tired . (Lamha, London)
A
Ayesha Says: Dear Lamha, Our eyes all produce different levels of moisture and for those of us, me included, who generally have moist eyes, it is difficult to make the kohl stay put. First of all, you need to prevent the colour from bleeding downwards. Before you apply the kohl on your waterline, take a gel or liquid liner and line your lower lash line. The line doesn’t need to be thick but just enough to cover the entire lash line. Once this is done, line your eyes as usual and you will notice that hardly any colour will seep through this line. The next step is to make sure that the colour stays in your waterline. For this, I would suggest wiping your waterline ever so slightly before you apply the kohl and soon as you have applied, try and not blink for a few seconds. This helps the kohl stay in place for hours.

I am only the house of your beloved
you’ll no longer expect anything else:
“I am only the house of your beloved,
that is both the manifest and the mystery.
not the beloved herself:
That one is the lord of states of feeling,
true love is for the treasure, not for the coffer that contains it.” The real beloved is that one who is unique, who is your beginning and your end. When you find that one,
