Power Dressing

Divas!

Lately, the B-Town beauties are suiting up to show the boys that it doesn’t exclusively belong to them. Alia Bhatt, set the trend we think when she donned a cute short three-piece suit that made us gush over her and ever since then, this seems to be in thing with our B-Town divas.

Sonam however, has donned the suit a lot of times and has always pulled it off with panache. This recent black suit from Parisian fashion house, Paula Ke, is just too good to be true! She has pulled off this ensemble with finesse! In fact, her suit literally personifies with her film, Neerja’s theme. It speaks of bravery and courage and the balls to do something. Sonam here looks super cool in this outfit and shows that she can pull off a dress from the men’s section with utmost awesomeness!

The one thing where Sonam Kapoor has no competition is with respect to fashion. While the diva does sometimes have rainy days, nevertheless, she manages to nail the look with her smile.

Katrina Kaif also seems to have derived inspiration from it as she too sported a sunny yellow suit for her Fitoor promotions. She looks ever so stunning in this sunny yellow Philip Lim pant suit

Deepika Padukone suited it up during her Tamasha promotions in this stunning Shehla Khan piece. The tall lass makes everything look good these days.

Wazir actress Aditi Rao Hydari says she prefers power dressing and killed it in this encrusted white suit at the recent pre party for the 61st Annual Filmfare Awards.

We have always been huge fans of Kareena Kapoor Khan and you will know why when you see her in this dapper 3 piece on location for her upcoming Ki and Ka. The Kapoor babe can make any dull colour look stunning.

We bring you the roundup of the trending Instagram posts from the fortnight. Definitely #InstaHOT, we say!

Ever since Deepika Padukone announced her big Hollywood break with Vin Diesel in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, there has been curiosity about her role and look in the film. Well, we now know the answer. Vin Diesel shared this picture of himself with the leading lady from the first day of filming. Deepika looks hot and we can’t wait to see her as ‘Serena’ in the action flick!

Kapoor and Sons is one of the most awaited films of the year, bringing together Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan, students Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhtora together. The films seems to be a fun romantic comedy, also starring Rishi Kapoor, and the first look shared by Karan Johar and Fawad Khan has us swooning already! P.S. Fawad Khan has officially joined Instagram – go follow for some good looking updates!

Bollywood heartthrob Sidharth Malhotra and Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar had us play the guessing game with their recent posts on social media about their latest collaboration. We now know the two came together for a brand endorsement. It makes for quite a handsome photo, what say?

Asin, the lady who stole all hearts with her sweet portrayal of Kalpana in Aamir Khan’s Gajini, got married this week to beau, Rahul Sharma. Best man and cupid Akshay Kumar was there to share the couple’s special day!

Abhishek Bachchan might not have had a dream career in Bollywood but it definitely seems like he has the dream family. The Bachchan clan all got together in Maldives to celebrate Junior Bachchan’s birthday earlier this week and dad Amitabh Bachchan shared this photo from the holiday!

Staying with Fawad Khan, the actor shared a photo of himself with his family from the opening game of the Pakistan Super League. Good to see the actor spending some quality time with his family! The Pakistan Super League kicked off in Dubai yesterday and promises to provide one month of cricket madness to fans of the game from across the world! While we are still not sure about the casting of Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt in Gauri Shinde’s next, we think they look super cute during their performance at a recent awards show. The film, expected to release this year stars the actors in what is being said to be an ‘unusual’ story and not opposite each other!

Trailer ‘Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive’ will leave you in splits Indian actors Manish Paul, Pradhuman Singh and Piyush Mishra are back with a sequel titled, Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive, to the critically acclaimed satirical comedy on the post 9/11 world, Tere Bin Laden (2010). The movie garnered fabulous reviews and went on to become a box office success for its witty content and notable performances. The makers released the trailer of the second installment, garnering over 2 million views already within its three weeks release. The trailer explains the story, which revolves around a Bollywood director hired by the CIA on the pretext of making a Hollywood film on Osama’s death. It so happens that a Pakistani group hijacks the idea and things seem to take an uproarious course. Director Abhishek Sharma has shared that the film will have a common thread with its prequel but the script is original. Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive releases in cinemas worldwide on 26 February 2016 and is distributed by Reliance Entertainment.

Can’t relate to my ‘Ki and Ka’ character: Arjun Kapoor After portraying a goal-oriented IIM student in “2 states”, actor Arjun Kapoor will be seen essaying a house husband in the upcoming film “Ki and Ka”. He says he cannot relate to his “unambitious” character from the R. Balki directorial. “My character Kabir is not ambitious, unlike me. So I cannot say I can relate to him,” Arjun told IANS. The 30-year-old actor will be seen playing an IIT graduate and a house husband to actress Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character Kia, an ambitious and a career-oriented woman in the upcoming romantic comedy which is slated to hit the screens on April 1. “He (my character) has grown up wanting to be like his mother and not like his father. But he has tremendous respect for people who work. He does not look down upon work. He is not a slacker. He’s an

educated boy from IIT. But he is very clear about why he is the way he is,” he added about his character. Arjun says the concept of “Ki and Ka” is essentially about the importance of understanding in a marriage despite the fact that the wife is a working professional and the husband stays at home. “Society takes some time to understand these things, but that is the quirk of the film, I think,” Arjun added. “Ki and Ka” also features megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his actress-politician wife Jaya Bachchan in a cameo.

‘Kapoor and Sons’ special to all of us: Karan Johar Upcoming film “Kapoor and Sons” was special to the entire production team for various reasons, feels Karan Johar. The trailer of “Kapoor and Sons” produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions was unveiled in Mumbai on Wednesday. “’Kapoor and Sons’ is special to all of us for various reasons, also because it makes a huge shift from loving your parents to understanding your children. I think it is a different perspective on family. All families have a series of issues, some hidden secrets, lies and conflicts but eventually it is the cementing factor in all our lives,” Karan said at the trailer launch. The starcast - Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor, was present at the event.

“’Kapoor and Sons’ touches upon the happy days, some sad ones that we need to overcome, and the film deals with these issues in their own manner,” Karan said. The film sees the return of director Shakun Batra who had previously directed the Imran KhanKareena Kapoor starrer “Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu”. It captures the on-and-off bond between Sidharth and Fawad who play brothers, Rajat and Ratna their parents and the overall ups and downs in the Kapoor family, while Alia gets involved with the family through her bond with the brothers at various points of the story. An interesting part of the trailer, though, is the ‘old’ Mr. Kapoor, played by Rishi Kapoor. About his look, Karan said: “Chintu ji’s (Kapoor) age is in the 60s, and he had to portray a role of an 85-90-year old. And obviously there was a need for makeup and we got a team for it, it’s usually prosthetic makeup.” “It used to take 3-4 hours every day, and it is tough for an artist to sit on the chair for that long and on top of that, to perform with all of it on your face. It needs a certain kind of experience and tremendous talent, to perform through that. It was a specific look, and Chintuji looked convincing,” Karan said. “Kapoor and Sons”, presented by Fox Star Studios, releases on March 18.

Vidya Balan to star in ‘Kahani 2’ If you loved Vidya Balan-starrer thriller ‘Kahani,’ then this news will please you as the 2012 hit film is getting a sequel. Director Sujoy Ghosh said in a recent interview, “Yes, ‘Kahaani 2’ is happening. It is in pre-production stage. Vidya Balan will star in the film. Major parts of the film will be shot in Kolkata.” The original flick starred the 38-year-old actress as a pregnant protagonist in search of her missing husband. Balan will next be seen making a special appearance in Ribhu Dasgupta’s ‘T3EN,’ which also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Musician Matt Healy slams One Direction

English musician Matt Healy of rock band The 1975 has lashed out at One Direction, saying the band lacks credibility. “Oh, well... they’re four guys who queued up outside an arena to sing in front of Simon Cowell. Do they really have any artistic credibility? That sounds like a mean thing to say, but it’s a good question. Like, do they,” Spin magazine quoted Healy as saying, reports mirror.co.uk. He also opened up about a writing session that didn’t go well with the group.

“They got me in, and they said ‘We really like your band. Would you write a song for us?’ They didn’t seem to be actually

that interested; they just wanted to play me this song that they said was really, really inspired by us,” he said. The song was “Change your ticket”, which was reportedly influenced by The 1975’s “Girls”. After hearing the song, Healy told the band: “Listen guys, fill your boots, the song doesn’t sound that much like Girls. But the guitar and the whole vibe of it is a complete lift. So take the guitars off, and we’re good.”

Working on Jai Gangaajal was amazing experience: Priyanka Priyanka Chopra, who will be essaying the role of tough cop, SP Abha Mathur in Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangaajal, recently thrilled her fans by sharing a very interesting behind the scene video of the film. In the video, one can see Jha taking his cast and crew to task and now, she has unveiled a making video of the cop drama. The actress shared the video with her followers on Twitter, writing, #JaiGangaajal was an amazing experience especially because I had the opportunity to work with such fine actors... The video not only introduces the viewers to the films lead cast but also displays the amount of hard work and dedication that went into the making of the movie. The movie has been shot at various real life locations, which gives it a very earthy and rustic flavour. While the actors are seen preparing for their powerpacked performances in the video, Jha is seen juggling between his role as an actor and a director. You last worked with Sean Paul in 2009, and now the two amazing Sean’s are back with Make My Love Go – what took you so long? Jay Sean: Yeah, well I mean, here’s the thing, here’s my opinion on collaborations. Collaborations can happen at any time on any song, and they either make sense or they don’t. They either feel – or they don’t. And for me there’s nothing worse than throwing away the talent of two artists coming together on a record that doesn’t make sense. And I just didn’t have the right song for him, it just wasn’t the right period – music was different. We always wanted to do another song together, because we’ve remained such good friends, since we can remember. But once I wrote this song there was nobody else that I knew would be more perfect for this record than Sean, because it is in essence a dance or reggae influenced song. And Sean to me is still the king of that world, when it comes to pop reggae, you know? And here it is, Make My Love Go, both of us back together. The track sounds amazing and it’s obviously got your usual style like you

say, dance and reggae, and I’m sure it’s going to be a super hit with your fans. But would you ever consider doing perhaps a different style of music, maybe rock, or even the current trend of folk style songs - would you ever consider attempting to experiment with those kinds of styles?

shows, do you think it’s a lot easier to break into mainstream music?

No, so for me I think it’s like you stick to what you know, kinda what you do best.

I think it’s always difficult to break into mainstream music just because there’s so much competition, and you really have to stand out and be the best in order to get the attention and get the limelight. And, somebody asked me this the other day, they said is it easier now or more difficult to get into the industry now that you have so many platforms to be recognised. I said it’s a bit of both, you know you have Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and vine. You have all of these platforms to upload your own videos and upload your talent, to get noticed by record companies, artists, producers, song writers, everything. So yeah, do you have more access to the industry and the execs, yes.

You were one of the very first British Asian male artists to make it successful in the mainstream music industry, and obviously since then there’s been a pool of Asian talent coming forward, such as Zayn Malik, Naughty Boy. Do you think it was a lot harder for you in your day compared to how it is for people now – especially with reality

But are you in a big sea of competition? There’s so many more fish in that same little pond, yeah you are. So yeah it’s a bit of both, and I think ultimately what it comes down to is really, and I still believe this, is it comes down to a song. It doesn’t matter who you are, how big you are, how great you are. I was a complete unknown in America when ‘Down’

No probably not [Laughter] No I think er, it’s like if you cook Italian food and you know Italian is your main forte. You might like a bit of Indian food, you don’t really want to try and go there and compete with the big Indian restaurants, do you? No

hit, the commercial demographic of America did not know who Jay Sean was – my Indian fans did – but the regular people did not know. But they heard a song on radio that they loved, and it resonated with them, and that is what it will always come down to. You’ve had a very successful career in music, would you ever consider going into movies, film? [laughter] Yes, only because I enjoy acting, like I actually do enjoy acting. It’s funny because a lot of people end up in movies from music, and the reason why is because even if we don’t know how to act in the first place, we learn how to act because we’re doing music videos so much. It’s such a weird thing but I don’t think people realise that, you know first we used to be something that was, we used to be just a voice on radio without a face. Then we had music videos, and all of a sudden we needed to put a face and meanings and emotions to the song, and show that in our behaviour and acting. Some people in music are really good at it and find it natural, other people don’t know how to do

it. But I really do enjoy it, and if the right kind of role came about I’d definitely be interested. A little birdie tells us that when you were younger, you used to enjoy going to the cookery club and an ornothologist club – bird-watching club. Then obviously you had a drastic make-over, you went into music. But I think some of our readers are keen to know, do you still take an interest in bird watching? And there’s no pun intended here, I mean bird literally the animal! [Laughter] Yeah I’m not allowed to watch any more birds, I’m married now! So that’s out of the question. But in terms of cooking, it’s funny, I’ve really learned to cook. It sounds stupid but I never really formally learned how to cook anything, I was a classic, my mum made me everything like ‘don’t worry, I’ll do it!’ and I’m like ‘mum, I can do the basics’, ‘no, don’t worry I’ll do it’. So eventually I learned, and now I actually cook everything for myself, all my food I eat on a daily basis I prepare myself, because you know, I have a very

So very multi-talented! Back in 2014 you did an interview with one of our journalists discussed your label Jayded Records and you were quite excited at the time, having signed up American-Indian singer Rajeev Dawhal. So what’s happening with your label at the moment? Can we see more of that in the future? Well Jayded is liquefied, so let’s take Jayded out of the question, that was liquefied ages ago before Cash Money. My new label is called Kamouflage. And Rajeev is still there, we’re developing him. It takes a while, I think a lot of people don’t know how long it takes to develop an artist, you can’t just put them out there and be like ‘here, go go go!’ You’ve gotta really take your time to develop. So we’ve got a few acts that we’re still working on. Brilliant, so we can see more of Kamouflage coming soon, is that right? Yeah, that’s definitely something that I wanna build up. Brilliant. So, apart from obviously your single coming out now, what else can we expect in the next couple of years from you? Next couple of years? [laughter] [laughter] Couple of months? I think – er yeah, because for me, I think what’s really important for me

19

– even though I do sort of have year-long plans, I have my five-year plan, my ten-year plan and stuff – but really in terms of fans, I know that for them they just want content. They just wanna keep having, you know, music, videos, little clips, little collaborations here and there, just stuff floating around, that they can just sink their teeth into and their claws into and just be like yeah, you know? There’s more and more stuff, and it keeps giving us more, and that’s something that I’m very aware of. It didn’t used to be like that back in the day, like obviously 13 years ago when I started off it was the conventional model of you released three singles in a year and an album and that’s it. And then you took a couple of years off, to go and write another album, but times aren’t like that anymore. So I’m very aware of that. So I have a few little creative pieces that I’m doing floating around, as well as of course, banging out singles. That’s the main priority. Well we’d like to wish you all the best here, from Asian Style, and we’ll definitely be looking out for your next music track. All the best I appreciate that, thank you

Katrina Kaif:

Tabu is a phenomenal actress and her role in Fitoor is equally phenomenal

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Feb 2016, 1st Edition

We have missed you. We didn’t get to see much of you in 2015. The only movie that released of yours was Phantom. Is 2016 going to be different?

you’re bringing to the character. Is it true that your Director made you and Tabu colour your hair red as a tribute to the chinars of Kashmir?

Yes, indeed! I have three releases this year… kick starting with Fitoor in February and then both ‘Jagaa Jasoos’ and ‘Baar Dekho’ later in 2016 itself. So yes, you will definitely be seeing a lot more of me this year!

Yes, that’s correct – it was Abhishek’s vision from day one. The red hair in the film depicts the changing seasons of the beautiful chinar trees of Kashmir, and also the connection between Tabu’s Begum character and my character, Firdaus.

Fitoor, is one of our top 5 films to watch in 2016 and so we have Great Expectations (pun intended) Do you ever feel the pressure from fans/audience on the outcome of a film, ahead of its release? There is always pressure but I think that’s a good thing. Every artist must always be driven to do better and give more to their fans and well-wishers. To use your pun, we must repeatedly meet all their Great Expectations! All I’m hoping with Fitoor is that the audiences recognise the love and passion that has gone into making the film. Let’s talk about your look in Fitoor. We’re loving the red hair and the intensity

You have had a series of successful films at the box office, but some have criticised you for your acting ability, saying that you often do repetitive roles and are featured in mainly male dominated films, what’s your response to such comments? Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I don’t think it is my right or place to judge someone for their comments When selecting a film, a number of factors become the deciding factor for me to choose a project, and nine out of ten times, this is focused on the role. Having looked at the characters I have portrayed I have to say in the last five years, I do feel they

Tabu, Aditya and Katrina during Fitoor promotions

have been quite distinct, irrespective of the genre / theme of the film. Also, one of our industry greats taught me a mantra which I strongly believe in. ‘Do not do something different just for the sake of doing something different. There is a reason the audiences love you so please don’t ever shock them with something because of what a dozen people may say.’ You have often said, you have to work twice as hard compared to other actors due to not being fluent in Hindi, do you think your performance therefore, if Fitoor, was made as an English adaptation of Great Expectations would be even better, as perhaps the emotional connect might be better? I’d like to think that my Hindi is pretty good now! Great Expectations has already been made in English (several times over, in fact) and I doubt they would approach me even if there is another one in the making! Having said all of that and jokes apart, I do work very hard to get my accent right (it’s not the fluency really) and will

continue to do so. Director Abhishek Kapoor, has praised Tabu for her performance in the film, is there ever any concern that she may steal the limelight for the film? Not at all! Tabu is a phenomenal actress and her role in Fitoor is equally phenomenal. She deserves every word of praise for her sheer body of work and not just for Fitoor. It took a considerable amount of effort to not get lost in her performance and to remember to give all my cues at the right times. I think we have just been very fortunate to have her on board for the film. In fact, if there was any concern at all, it was because I had to pretend that Tabu was my mother! I mean she does not look like my mother from any angle! What matters to you more box office success or critical acclaim? I think that is impossible to answer. Critical acclaim does not always translate to box office success and vice versa. I think there has to be a balance between

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity of working with some of our Indian film Industry’s greatest. I will strive to work even harder so that I can continue to validate all the positivity. way? Deeply honoured and humbled!! I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity of working with some of our Indian film Industry’s greatest. the two. I mean, what is the point of awards and accolades if the project has not been commercially viable for the producers? What are the key factors you look at before agreeing to be part of a film? I really need to connect with the role as, if I do, then I will connect with the audience. I also look for that one thing that sets it apart from everything I have done until then. For instance, on Dhoom 3, I knew that it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with acrobats from all over the world, to push my body to achieve something unique. In Fitoor, I mean who would pass up on playing one of classic literature’s most romantic heroines?

But seldom is a film ‘all about me’. The script has to be cohesive, the project has to be commercially viable, on paper at least. Selfish films rarely work. The audiences are our Gods and I try to put myself in their shows when I listen to the script. Salman Khan was praising you on the sets of Big Boss recently. The superstar said that you were the most hardworking actress there can ever be, and also talented. He also said: “When one keeps working hard, the talent keeps increasing. The whole country is crazy about you, including me! So, obviously you are talented,” How do you feel when senior and popular actors compliment you in this

People are loving the song ‘Tere Liye’ the look and the soulful lyrics are being loved by many. And, we’re loving the intense chemistry between you and Aditya in the song and we feel both of you have an amazing sensuous onscreen presence. Do you think such scenes are easier only if your co-actor is comfortable to work with, or are you the type, that can just throw yourself into a scene and not worry about who the scene is with? Having a comfort level with your colleague is always helpful as, when you’re on set, the ice is already broken and you’re ready to be immersed in your characters. The chemistry is considerably easier to achieve but it is a fine line - with Aditya, who I have known for years, I had to remind myself (and him and vice versa) that we were not friends who have know each other for years in this film but a very troubled couple deeply in love. I do think comfort is a

very important factor but especially for intense romantic scenes, it takes me some time to get there. For you what or who is the scene stealer in Fitoor? Everyone and everything! Kashmir itself where the film is set is almost like a character in the film. She is breathtakingly beautiful. The children who play Aditya and myself in our childhood phase are outstanding besides being brilliantly cast. Tabu is a God send. Aditya is phenomenal. We also have the benefit of an amazing supporting cast who all add to the impact. The technical crew is beyond comparison. However, I think the true scene stealer is our director, Abhishek Kapoor, whose single-minded vision is responsible for Fitoor being the sweeping romantic marvel that it is… Thank you for speaking to us and we would like to wish you all the very best for Fitoor

Ask Ayesha Q

Ever wondered about how to carry off the latest beauty trend of the season? Or what products to use to make those dark circles disappear? Well help is finally here. Send in your queries to our resident hair and makeup specialist Ayesha Babar to Ayesha@asianstylemagazine.com, and we will get you your answers!

Since the beginning of the winter season, my skin especially around the nose has started looking flaky and dry. So much so that it shows even if I apply a heavy coverage foundation on it. What should I be doing? Ayesha Says: Hi Manvi, all of us, regardless of our skin type, need to take extra care of our skin during the colder months. The indoor heating robs the skin, especially the delicate skin on our face, of moisture much faster than normal. The flakiness is being caused by the accumulation of the dry, dead skin. I would recommend a deep clean. Massage your cleansing lotion into your face in an upward motion for a few minutes followed by a rinse. Next, get an exfoliator (even drugstore brands work fine) and gently work that into your skin, focussing on the nose. Use a brush with the exfoliator for the extra glow. Once you have rinsed your face, dab it dry and apply generous amounts of your night moisturiser, massaging it into your skin. Repeat this once a week. You are guaranteed to wake up with a fresh glow!

Q A

Is there a trick to making foundation last the whole day? If I do my makeup in the morning, I find that by the afternoon, it fades and becomes uneven which doesn’t look nice.

Ayesha says: Hi Sara, long-lasting makeup is every woman’s dream (and maybe some mens’ too!) The key to long-lasting makeup is well-prepared skin. Just as you would even out a wall and prep it before applying paint, in the same way the face is like a canvas and has to be readied before you start with your makeup. First of all, ensure your skin is well-hydrated. Next, apply a primer all over your face, focussing on the t-zone. The primer will help reduce the appearance of any pores and give you a smooth surface to work on. It also helps the foundation sit on your skin better. Once your skin is ready, apply the foundation. Remember, always start light – you can build it up later. Powder your face with a large, fluffy brush after the foundation and let is settle for a few minutes. This will help your makeup stay in place all day!

I have been getting the shellac manicure for the last two years. This has made my nails brittle and dull. What can I do to have natural, healthy nails again?

Ayesha says: Hi Amrita, shellac polish or any other kind of chemical nail treatment is not suitable for long term use. I would suggest keeping your nails short for a few weeks, to help them become less brittle. You also need to see if you are having enough nutrients in your diet for good nail health. Calcium is particularly essential. I would suggest applying vitamin E oil (available widely at drugstores and pharmacies) to your nails every night before you sleep. Also, try and leave them with just a coat of nail hardener instead of polish till they regain their shine and strength!

Helping women propose to their partners this leap year Proposal planning is traditionally left to the men, however we are encouraging women to take charge and propose to their partners this leap year. We at Carriages Weddings & Events have launched a brand new proposal planning service to help anyone who needs some creative assistance, or simply a hand with working out the logistics. February 29 is traditionally the one day where women can turn the tables and ask their partner to marry them. We want to help all the women out there and give them some added confidence, and show them that actually, it’s ok to propose to your partner all year round – especially given the modern society we live in today.” The 12th century tradition of women proposing to men began in Ireland where women were allowed to propose

to men. According to folklore tradition, if the proposal was rejected, then the man in question would have to buy her 12 pairs of gloves to hide her hand from the embarrassment of not wearing an engagement ring. Moving back to the modern day, according to a recent survey, almost half of British men said they would say yes if their other half proposed to them. Famous female proposers include; Queen Victoria, Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Hudson and Halle Berry. Times are changing and like with anything else you need to keep moving with them. Our new service is aimed at those to-be brides (or grooms) who want to make their proposal story special and memorable, because it’s something that will stay with them and their loved one for the rest of their life.

Meet Meera Majithia and Sonal Kholia, our resident event planners Meera and Sonal launched Carriages Weddings & Events in July 2015 specialising in Asian Weddings and Events. Whilst Sonal is more hands on with her wealth of experience and knowledge working in the hospitality industry for many years, Meera too is a sharp tool who adds to the Sonal’s expertise with her creative flair having been involved in the PR and media sectors. The Meera Sonal combination oozes passion, creative vision and professionalism. We are delighted to introduce them to you as our event planning columnists. Each issue they will talk you through the pitfalls of managing events as well as sharing their key tips and of course if we are lucky see their creative creations (after all they do this for a living, so they obviously know best). With February being the month of romance and of course a leap year, this edition the women only company launch their service to help women propose to their partners.

60 Seconds with

Abhishek Sharma

You’re doing another spoof, and the main theme and central character is again Osama Bin Laden. Don’t you think it’s a bit risky to do it a second time around? Abhishek: Well, I’d say it’s not the same theme; it’s a very different theme. And it’s not a sequel, but more of a spin-off in a sense. The first film was about a post 9/11 world, this film is about the post Osama Bin Laden world, and as the title says, ‘Dead or Alive’, it’s also in the context of wondering what happened that night when they got Bin Laden. So it’s a funny take on the whole operation, it’s a funny take on Bollywood, and it’s a mockery of those times. So it’s not at all similar to the first film. In the second part, the spin-off – I won’t call it a sequel! You’ve chosen not to maintain the Ali Zafar as the main protagonist. Was there a reason for not casting him this time around? No, Ali Zafar is playing a special role in this film. It was a very interesting structure that we applied, I don’t think that this kind of a casting structure has been used ever in a sequel. What happens is that Ali Zafar is playing himself, his own fictional self, so it’s a take on his own self as well. And so at the time of making the film he couldn’t have played any other role, and nobody else could have played his character. So the protagonist, who is named Sharma (based partially on me) is being played by Manish Paul who is a fresh casting in this franchise. So yeah, Ali is playing a very interesting character, but you know he couldn’t have played the protagonist, that just wasn’t possible.

Speaking of characters, you’ve gone over the seven seas – so to speak- and you’ve taken on Iman Crosson who’s very famous in America for his Youtube videos and his rapping, and obviously his comedy. How did that come about?

When I wrote the film there was this Obama character, so I had to crack that because I wanted a good impersonator but I wanted someone with humanity because I didn’t want it to be a spoof, I wanted it to be a farce, there’s a big difference between spoof and farce. To make it more farcical I wanted some sort of element which would be original, and not just mocking of how Obama speaks. I first looked at Alphacat (which is his name on his YouTube channel) and I saw on there his raps, where he raps as Obama It’s amazing Yeah it’s very unique, and I liked it. So I took the Obama raps out, you know in his press conference he is rapping, which is so unique. And you know, despite rapping he still remains the character of Obama, and that is what is so very special about him. He’s been to the white house twice and he’s actually met the real Obama, and he’s considered one of the best impersonators of Obama in the world. And he’s a great rap artist! So all these things combined kind of convinced me that he should play Obama in this way. Anupum Kher, the veteran actor, has praised the film hugely – how does it feel when you get compliments from experienced actors such as him? Well it’s very kind of him, kind words from him. Me and Anupum Kher have

worked together and he’s a friend and somebody I look up to. He saw the film a while ago as my friend, and his son Sikander Kher is also in the film, and everybody is raving about his performance, because he’s not played this kind of a character. We were all there for the screening, but he told me that it was brilliant and he was blown away by the performances, by the film, and that’s something that’s really brilliant coming from a senior actor like him. Who or what would you say is the scene-stealer of the film?

Scene stealer? Oh well, see all these characters are wonderful – Manish playing Sharma is an amazing character, Pradhuman Singh playing the lookalike of Bin Laden, which he did last time.

But you must have a particular favourite? I think these characters are all unique, and I think Sikander’s character [US Agent David Chadhda] is the one that people will definitely hear about, because it’s a beautiful character. He’s a white Texan who transforms into a brown Punjabi guy and comes to hunt for Paddi, the Bin Laden lookalike, to cast him in a so-called Hollywood film and acts as the producer. It’s a very good character and I think that could be the dark horse in the film that people will look forward to

his character and want to see him.

Finally, what’s next after this for you Abhishek? Do you think there’s going to be a part three, or will it be something else?

Tere Bin Laden is the franchise that was never intended to be a franchise, I got the idea of making a sequel only after Osama died. You know, I was never intending to make it. And the story in this sequel is more of a spin off, and from another perspective. So I have never thought about it as a continuing idea, and I’ve not really thought about it, a part three or anything. But, you know, I didn’t know that I’d be making the second part after the first film, I didn’t know how it would turn out. Basically the tone stuck with the news and whatever was happening, and I came to an idea. So if there’s an idea which kind of excites me, then definitely because there is the world that I really love and it's crazy and it's farcical and it makes fun of a lot of people. So as of now I don’t think that I’m looking at a part three, because as I said, this isn’t even part two, it’s just a spin off. So I don’t know whether that can happen, but like they say, never say never. Apart from the last two films, one I’m working on now is a big studio that I can’t say much about and somebody else is writing it and I’m directing it, and there’s another film that I have written which is on the issue of intolerance, another subject which is in the media right now. Tere Bin Laden:Dead or Alive will be out in cinemas worldwide on 26 February

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Feb 2016, 1st Edition

Poets Corner I am only the house of your beloved Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi, more popularly known as just ‘Rumi’, was a 14th Century Persian poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic. Rumi’s works are written mostly in Persian, but occasionally he also used Turkish, Arabic, and Greek in his verse. His Mathnawì, composed in Konya, is considered one of the greatest poems of the Persian language. His works are widely read today in their original language across Greater Iran and the Persianspeaking world.

I am only the house of your beloved

you’ll no longer expect anything else:

“I am only the house of your beloved,

that is both the manifest and the mystery.

not the beloved herself:

That one is the lord of states of feeling,

true love is for the treasure, not for the coffer that contains it.” The real beloved is that one who is unique, who is your beginning and your end. When you find that one,

dependent on none; month and year are slaves to that moon. When he bids the “state,” it does His bidding; when that one wills, bodies become spirit.

His poetry has been influencing literature and popular culture for many centuries, and still holds the power to touch people’s hearts today. This edition as it’s the month of love, who better to get us into the mood of this great emotion than Rumi’s beautifully penned poetry of love. Enjoy!

Fancy yourself as a bit of a poet. Then why not share your poems with us? You never know if we like it we might print it. Email us at poems@asiansunday.co.uk
