EDITOR’S LETTER Being sat in Yorkshire, whilst editing this issue of your favourite mag I can totally identify with our cover story Shahid Kapoor’s complaints about Leeds being super cold. However, the cool dude that he is still looks super cool despite being cold in the stills of his upcoming flick Shaandar. This one is most definitely one to watch out. Being cold does have its plus points. I love bringing out my boots and coloured scarves to combat the cold season. Stylish and snug. Just like our fashion pages….but quiet spooktacular too as you will find out. And how can I forget a happy happy Navratri to all, especially those who will be observing the vrats (fasting). For those foodies amongst us this edition we have picked some of the most popular festive dishes that can be enjoyed in line with Navratri but they are so delicious don’t blame us if you’re family request you to make them at other times too. Our man Junaid had a spectacular time at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards this month. He had a blast speaking to all the artists and they loved posing with a picture of their favourite newspaper and magazine. Speaking of music just for our lovely readers we have an exclusive ghap shap with the music man for today’s generation. In his own super musical words, get to know the man himself Roach Killa As usual the Asian Style team have done wonders with this edition, so don't let me keep you......happy reading x

What are

celebs wearing? by Ninder Kaur

Regular Bollywood faces Deepti Naval, Soha Ali Khan, Mini Mathur and Konkana Sen Sharma were all in Delhi to attend the show by designer Sanjay Garg of the Raw Mango brand at the Spring-Summer edition of Amazon India Fashion Week 2016. The designer did what he does best- bridge the gap between textile and fashion when he opened the Spring-Summer edition of Amazon India. Check out what the celebs were wearing and whether you think they are runway potential.

Konkana Sen sizzled in an autumnal inspired saree. The bright green really brought a dash of seasonal colour to her outfit. She accessorised with a flower –wrap around bracelet, aviator sunglasses and brown crossover bag (no doubt to keep all her essentials in).

Mini Mathur opted for a grey, black and white look. She chose a black and white striped crop top wrapped under a grey shawl-like saree. No doubt she kept warm throughout the show. She accessorised with a white and gold plated belt and a gold-chained clutch.

Soha Ali Khan brought a touch of pink in her spring/summer inspired outfit. She wore a plain pink fitted floaty dress and accesorised it with the same colour silk duppata that had gold intricate stitching. She accessorised with a nude coloured bag and gold sandals. She kept it chic and classy.

During Sanjay Garg’s show, rich golden sheen kurtas with lightly embroidered dupattas formed the majority of the collection, in vivid hues of rani pink, emerald green, sapphire, royal blue and black with golden work. The use of plain fabric to enhance the impact of the garment was a trend continued from his previous winter/festive 2014 show, while the silhouettes were more deconstructed than before.

Garg gave us a tunic that’s flowy and metallic and we love it.

The cropped pants are the perfect match to this tunic top and we think it’ll make any woman feel gorgeous and sexy. The polka dot adds wow factor to this look to make you instantly feel more glamorous.

Sanjay Garg definitely saved the best for last. The showstopper was dressed in the most delicate and feminine lehenga that embodied the balance between urban living and rural roots. This pale pink outfit is perfect for formal events or weddings.

Take the first dough ball and using a rolling pin and a flourless surface, roll into a circle until around 4-5 inches in diameter. Place a ball of the daal filling in the centre and pull the dough around it, pinching the dough closed and removing some excess using the length of your index finger and thumb. Shah Rukh Khan to perform at Anubhav Sinha’s fundraiser event for farmers

With many Bollywood celebrities voluntarily participating in many campaigns that are directed towards the well-being of farmers, Shah Rukh Khan too has decided to do his share for them. The superstar has decided to become a part of a fundraiser event, organised by Anubhav Sinha titled ‘Son of Soil’. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha and Shah Rukh Khan, who previously collaborated for the sci-fi superhero drama Ra.One, will now come together for this charity show. Apart from the actor, others who will be a part of this concert include composers Vishal-Shekhar, singer Ankit Tiwari, anchor Manish Paul among others and the director further revealed that all of them would be performing without being paid. The money collected through the show will be donated to farmers who are currently facing an extreme financial crisis and committing suicides. ‘Son of Soil’ will be held on November 28 but Anubhav Sinha is still contemplating on the venue and the show may be held in Delhi or Mumbai, depending on the sponsorship prospects.

Akshay Kumar generously donates to drought-affected farmers in India Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is on a mission to help droughtaffected, poverty-stricken farmers in India. The generous actor and philanthropist recently donated the substantial sum of Rs. 50 Lakh to the flagship water conservation scheme, ‘Jal Yukta Shivar’, an initiative established by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The scheme, promoted vigorously by the CM, helps construct ponds on farms for water harvesting, and so making villages ‘drought-proof’. Akshay Kumar is so passionate about the cause that last month the star went up on stage after a fashion show in Delhi to request guests to donate for the cause. Apart from this, Akshay has got in touch with banks in some of the drought affected areas to draw up a list of farmers struggling with repayment of loans, as he is keen to settle the debt of farmers without their knowledge. Even last month Akshay Kumar donated Rs. 90 Lakh to drought-

stricken Maharashtra farmers. Many farmers’ lives were devastated because of the recent drought in Maharashtra when the official crop, the Kharif crop, was completely destroyed. The drought occurred because of inadequate monsoon rains in Maharashtra. When asked about his charity, Akshay simply said: “It is a matter of concern, and I just hope more and more people get involved with this cause.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis thanked the actor for his contribution to ‘Jal Yukta Shivar’ in an official statement. Akshay Kumar also supports the Global Goals campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the new Global Goals For Sustainable Development that were signed by 193 world leaders in September. If the goals are met, we could eradicate global poverty, reduce inequalities and tackle climate change by 2030.

Find out more. Tell us about the latest release ‘Who dat girl’? Where has the inspiration come from? I have been a fan of that song since my mom used to play it as a young kid as it was originally sung by Musarat Nazeer and since it’s been so long since it was released me and my label Moviebox decided to give it a 2015 touch to rejuvenate the

song and of course who better to have sung it than the incredible Miss Pooja. How long has it taken to work on the new single? It takes time to create a masterpiece, so we worked on this track for a few months to give it a perfect touch and as you can see the response is phenomenal.

Why did you decide to feature Miss Pooja? Because her vocals match the strength needed to pull this track off and because I love her passion for sangeet and as you can see my choice wasn’t wrong.

What was it like to work with her again? It’s always great to work with such talented artists. We have done two songs before Romantic Jatt and Ferrari Laike so there’s always a musical chemistry when we work together. How does it feel to be Number.1 on the Official Asian Download Chart? Its always a blessing to be appreciated for your hard work so thank you to all those who supported legally off all the digital platforms. You recently got nominated in the Brit Asia awards under the Best Urban Asian Act. How did that make you feel? It feels great to be nominated as its recognition for the hard work an artist puts in. We won two years in a row in 2012-2013 and this year we were also nominated for Best Video which was great. What is the reason behind your stage nameRoach Killa? At the age of 12 I released an EP called Roachstafarian and got a great response selling over 10,000 copies. I wanted to call myself Junior Indian but my producer gave me the name Roach, as a 12 year old kid it didn’t mater what I was named I just wanted my music out. The name Killa was due to the stage performance at my school and talent shows so I just combined the two identities together and the name Roach Killa came about.

Did you find it a challenge to break out in the Asian music industry?

Where would you like to see the British Asian music industry in 5 years time?

Its very tough to come from another country and work hard to build a brand. I had many ups and downs but the secret behind success is hard work- “Winners never quit and Quitters never win”.

I think the public needs to legally support the artists if we want our industry to grow. We need to educate the public so their legal downloads can help Asian Artists achieve success in the mainstream.

What got you interested in music?

Who is your dream collaboration?

I was always surrounded by music from an early age- from Bollywood to Punjabi and my dad had a great voice so I think it was genetics mixed with passion.

My dream collaboration would have been 2pac. In the mainstream I would say Eminem. Punjabi has already happened with Jazzy B. Our brand new track “DYNAMITE” is coming very soon, so get ready.

What is your secret to getting number 1 tracks? There are no secrets its just understanding the market, understanding the business and most of all hard work and dedication. You are currently performing in India. How is it performing outside the UK? I have done numerous shows around the world but performing in India is a whole different feeling and the market has been starved for Roach Killa as everything has its time and it’s definitely my time. How do your UK fans compare to your international fans? I love all my fans the same but the UK is my second home so I have so much love from them and I really appreciate it. If you weren’t pursuing music, what would you be doing? Doing music. I was made for this.

phone and my laptop. I cant live without either. You have recently lost a lot of weight, what is your secret to getting into shape? Getting into shape is not a day or week thing, it’s a lifestyle and it takes hard work. I go to the gym 5 days a week but the secret is not just the gym its diet as well. Are there any other genres of music you would like to pursue? I don’t limit myself to genres. I’m an entertainer and I do what I feel is right. You will soon be hearing a lot of mainstream stuff

19

coming. I’ve always been experimental as you can see from every song that I drop. When you’re not working on new music, what is Roach doing? My mind is always ticking with new ideas and melodies. I love spending time with my best friend Prince, my beautiful, loyal dog. I love animals. What’s next for you? My next single is “DYNAMITE” with JAZZY B and then the album VERIFIED is coming up very soon. There will be lots of collabos- Bollywood and mainstream. It’s go time.

Would you ever pursue Bollywood music? That dream has already come true. I am currently in Mumbai. I have recorded three songs and currently finishing more. You will get to hear the first single very early in 2016. What are the best and worst bits about being a music artist? Best bit are my fans. The worst bits are me being a perfectionist. At times my manager has to tell me stop it. How do you prepare for going on tour? I was born ready. I love to travel and see the world and what is better than living your dream. I get to connect with fans all around the world and if I can touch their hearts then I feel at peace. What are your must-have items? My parent’s blessings, my

Quick fire round Favorite artist? Jazzy B Musical inspiration? 2pac, Bob Marley, Apache Indian, Jazzy B and Michael Jackson. Favourite food? Healthy … when being naughty it’s DESI. I’m a sucker for Daal Makhni and Saag Paneer. Favourite place to perform? On stage,

anywhere anytime. I live for performing. My live shows are different from your average artist. Your favourite rap of all time? 2pac- Only god can judge us. Canada or England? CANGLAND. Who Dat Girl is out now!

Shaandaar’s leading actor

Shahid Kapoor confesses he isn’t a romantic by Ninder Kaur We caught up with the 34-year-old awardwinning actor as he prepares for the release of his new rom-com movie. How does the film compare to the award winning Haider? The first thing they teach you as an actor is don’t compare your films. They are both two completely different types of film with two completely different filmmakers.

Haider is about all drama and darkness and all colours grey and black. Shaandaar is all bright, happy and funny. It has been amazing to go from Haider to Shaandaar. It has been a very different journey. Alia and you have been paired for the first time and you’re both looking great together. Do you ever get nervous when cast with a new lead, especially when you’re going to be up for audience scrutiny? I rarely get nervous

when it comes to the person I am working with. It is always exciting to work with somebody new because when you work with new people it brings out a different side to you as an actor because the chemistry is different, their reactions are different. I look forward to working with new people. As far as Alia is concerned, I had an absolute blast. I thought she was fantastic to work with. She is a very spontaneous actor. She is a great co-star and

she has great energy. She is new, she is fresh and she is passionate. Overall, she is a superbly talented actor. You filmed most of your film in Leeds. What do you think of the place and describe your favourite spot? It’s so cold. We were supposed to be making a film that is all summery but it was so cold. We totally died. We didn’t expect it to get that cold. All our costumes were easy breezy and summery and then the weather was really cold.

22

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Issue 8

Even on summery days it was cold. The only memory I have of Leeds is that it is so frigging cold. We tried to keep warm but Yorkshire tea wasn’t good enough. Karan Johar has had great things to say about the film. How does that make you feel? I mean Karan is a great guy. He is a huge part of the film. It is amazing to have him speak so positively about the film because he is a veteran in the film industry. He has been making films for a really long time so I have a lot of respect for his point of view. Shaandaar is a really happy and positive film and lots of people are

really excited for it to come out. It is amazing to have Karan speak so well about the film and I am sure he means what he is saying and I am really appreciative of his words. Since your last film release you have got married, do you think your marriage will impact on your box office ratings? I had a release last year and this year, which I think has been pretty good timing. I don’t think we live in that time anymore where it matters. The only thing that matters is the quality of work that you do, so the focus has to be on doing the nice films. Sometimes you work for the sake

of working because you feel insecure but after being an actor for twelve years I feel it is important to choose quality over quantity and that is what I am trying to do. As long as the product you have made is good there is no reason why people would not view it. I am very positive about Shaandaar and I feel as though I have had a really good year. I am only feeling good things and positive things. Shaandaar is described as India’s first destination wedding film, what exactly do you think the makers are hoping to showcase by describing it as that?

It is the first time we are making a film about a destination wedding. I think destination weddings are pretty huge. I know so many friends of mine who have done destination weddings and all you hear are the funniest stories that my friends have told me about attending marriages that they call a destination wedding. Its because it’s a group of people all travelling to a random location and all kinds of strange people come across each other, all kinds of crazy, random quirky messed up things happen in these four/five day affairs and no one has really ever made a film about that. There have always

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE

been films based against weddings but there has never been one based on a destination wedding, so I think it is a really cool idea to base a film on this. Vikas has written some really quirky characters and some of the interactions are really interesting. The couples’ wedding is supposed to be the ‘Shaandaar’ wedding and is supposed to be against the backdrop of a huge castle. He has a strong visual take on how he wanted the film to look.

You won most of the awards last year for the film Haider and now also the GQ India Actor of the Year Award. How important are awards to you? It is always amazing to be appreciated, sometimes awards that are popular and sometimes awards, which come from a jury that is basically people from the same fraternity, so either way it is very encouraging.

Haider was a very special film. Haider was a very experimental film and at that stage in my career it was very difficult to do. The subject was the kind of subject that was wouldn’t be considered mainstream. The content of the film was very dark and dramatic and a lot of people thought maybe at this stage in my career that I shouldn’t be attempting something

like that. The artistic quality of that film was superior and the script was so exciting and the character was so challenging. I am just grateful and thankful that the decision that I took got me so much appreciation. It was appreciated and loved and it was probably the most significant performances of my career. Shaandaar is obviously a rom-com movie.

Describe your perfect romantic night? To be honest I am not too much of a romantic. I mean I am not a diehard romantic. I like keeping it real. For me,romance is all about how you feel and not really about where you are. What kind of husband are you? I am hoping the kind that doesn’t get kicked out of the house.

Shaandaar is the upcoming Indian romantic comedy film also starring Alia Bhatt in a lead role. It has been directed by Vikas Bahal and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. The movie has been dubbed as “India’s first destination wedding film” and is scheduled for release on 22 October.

How to perfect the

ponytail by Rupa Gill

It’s a style we wear almost daily, a style we have been trying to master ever since we used to go strutting down the school corridors flashing our latest hairstyle. We never get tired of learning tips to perfect the ponytail especially when they are often considered the “go-to” hairstyle for many women on a bad hair day. Here are some essentials tips for creating a pony that stays in place even after the last strut down the catwalk/office corridor:

Direct your blow dry For a super sleek ponytail (and no bumps), you always want to blow dry your hair in the direction you want the hair to land. Blow dry hair from the root straight back in the direction of where the ponytail is going to ensure it lays properly.

Tilt your head back

Upgrade your elastic

When pulling hair into a ponytail, tilt your head back slightly to create a tighter hold. This helps keep the hair underneath from slipping out after you secure the pony.

When you secure a ponytail with a regular elastic, the hair loses tension over time and eventually slips out (the worst feeling ever). Make sure you invest in a tighter tension elastic to avoid your hair from falling out.

Side Pony The low side ponytail has become popular as an elegant look. You can achieve this by pulling the hair a few inches off-center and securing it in place. Very chic.

Avoid the heat when possible Bangs and ponytails are a fantastic combination-it’s young but sophisticated at the same time. If wearing your hair out is driving you insane, ponytails are great for a second-day hairstyle. What’s

even better is that layered pieces when tying your hair up are less likely to fall out when a little greasiness helps hold it all together.

Poets Corner

The fall of Palestine to the Zionists in 1948 led to a disastrous change both in the number and the social structure of the Arab population in occupied Palestine. Nearly three quarters of the 200,000 Arabs who continued to live in their homeland were peasants. The cities were mostly evacuated either during the war or soon afterwards. This led to a shocking deterioration in Arab social conditions due to the fact that the cities had been the centers of both political and cultural effusion. As the Zionist occupants closed their military ring, they started to impose their oppressive measures; the atmosphere was convenient for them. Their chief purpose was to eradicate every trace of the Arab personality and to implant the seeds of new trends which might grow and integrate within the Zionist political and literary life. Palestinian Literature, up to this tragic fall had been part of the mainstream of the Arab literary movement which flourished during the first half of the century. It had got its sources from and had been influenced by Egyptian, Syrian and Lebanese writers who led the literary movement then. Even renowned Palestinian writers had been indebted for their fame mostly to the Arab capitals which used to receive them and patronize their productions. Several factors had in fact contributed to diminishing the value of Palestinian literature at a time when Palestine was enjoying a prominent position in the political arena and the struggle for Arab nationalism. After 1948, Palestinian literature succeeded in laying the foundations of a new literary movement which may be better described as the literature of Exile rather than Palestinian or Refugee literature. Poetry, the chief element of this movement, has been able during recent years to witness a remarkable progress in quality and technique. We couldn't help but share this poem by Sameeh Al Qassem . Poetry of ressistance in ocupied Palestine translated by Sulafa Hijjawi

A LETTER FROM A BANKRUPT

By Sameeh Al Qassem

I may lose my daily bread, if you wish I may hawk my clothes and bed I may become a stone cutter, or a porter Or a street sweeper I may search in animal dung for food I may collapse, naked and starved Enemy of light I will not compromise And to the end I shall fight. You may rob me of the last span of my land You may ditch my youth in prison holes Steel what my grandfather left me behind: Some furniture or clothes and jars, You may burn my poems and books You may feed your dog on my flesh You may impose a nightmare of your terror On my village Enemy of light I shall not compromise And to the end I shall fight. ……………………………… ……………………………..

Enemy of light The signs of joy and the tidings Shouts of happiness and anthems 14 Are there at the port And at the horizon A sail is defying the wind and the deep sees Overcoming all the challenges It is the return of Ulysses From the lost sees It is the return of the sun And the return of the ousted And for their sake I swear I shall not compromise And to the end I shall fight!

Fancy yourself as a bit of a poet. Then why not share your poems with us? You never know if we like it we might print it. Email us at poems@asiansunday.co.uk
